Fukyuan is a traditional teahouse located in Takayama, tucked away on a small street. The teahouse offers delicious Warabi Mochi, which is soft and perfect when paired with kinako and vanilla ice cream. It also features an outdoor garden with a lovely view. The cafe is known for its delicious desserts such as ice cream, crepes, and parfaits, along with good coffee and matcha.
While they did not serve the pancake, the other desserts are delicious as well! The apple pie was warm and not overly sweet, really brought out the apple flavor. Wife had a crepe and it was just rich in flavor. For lunch, this is a great place to visit. They have food and it was very flavorful as well. Loved this restaurant, staff is friendly and speak a little English but translator is always best to use.

We loved this place so much that we visited twice during our stay — and both times were amazing! We had the crepes and the warabi mochi, both absolutely delicious, especially the mochi with ice cream!! The coffee was great too, and the yuzu tea was surprisingly not too sweet, which was a really nice surprise for me. The atmosphere is so calm and relaxing — the little Japanese garden next to us made it even more special. On our second visit, we sat Japanese-style on the tatami floor, which felt really authentic. The staff were super friendly and even told us about a festival event happening outside so we could go watch it. Overall, such a lovely place with amazing desserts, great drinks, and the nicest vibe! Highly recommend 🌸🍵✨

Loved visiting the cafe, set in a gorgeous house with interior garden to look over. It’s the cutest place. The staff are so sweet and helpful finding me the gluten free options. I ordered the crepe made from rice flour with chocolate and whipped cream. It was delicious! Even my non gluten free boyfriend loved it! 100% recommend coming here.

Cute traditional café ! We had to take off our shoes to enter and we were guided to a peaceful, warm and beautiful room among the many rooms this shop has.
Anya — Google review
We stumbled upon this quaint cafe in a little laneway and really enjoyed trying local delicacies. Just like when going to someone’s house, we had to remove our shoes. We loved the view of the internal courtyard. The soft serve tofu ice cream was the standout, nutty and rich, not too sweet, with a nice smooth texture. Warabi mochi was interesting too.
Cheryl L — Google review
Fukyuan is a hidden gem tucked away in Takayama’s charming old town—nestled in a peaceful side lane just steps from the bustling tourist streets. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warmest smiles and gracious hospitality, instantly setting the tone for what would become one of our most memorable dining experiences in Japan. We were shown to a table overlooking a serene central garden—an absolutely breathtaking view. It felt like stepping back in time into a refined traditional home, where classic Japanese architecture meets tasteful modern design. As sunlight poured in through the engawa, the space was bathed in a golden glow, accompanied by the gentle backdrop of soft jazz—it was truly atmospheric. We ordered a coffee float and a pizza, and both were outstanding. The pizza had a perfectly crisp, wood-fired crust that rivaled any we’ve had before. During our few weeks in Takayama, Fukyuan quickly became our favorite spot, not just for the food, but for the genuine kindness of the family who runs it. Each return visit felt like coming home. If you’re in Takayama, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit. And whatever you do—don’t leave without trying the crepes. They’re absolutely to die for. – Ronnie

Bistro
French restaurant
Bistro Kanzo is a charming French eatery located in Takayama, offering a cozy wooden dining space where classic soups, steaks, and salads are prepared using locally sourced ingredients and sauces. The restaurant is known for its delicious beef dishes made with local ingredients, including various cuts of Hida beef cooked to perfection. Guests can also savor other excellent dishes such as the pumpkin soup. The establishment provides top-notch service and offers a selection of wine and beer for purchase.
Really delicious Hida beef set meal! The meal was opened with pumpkin soup that was smooth and well seasoned. Next, we had rump and fillet steak, and the fillet steak melted in our mouths and was excellent, while the rump was leaner and not as tender it was delicious. The meal ended with sorbet and coffee and tea. Service was fantastic as well. Overall a very delicious Hida beef meal and we would highly recommend this place.

Very delicious dishes, super great Hida Beef and fresh Fish steak. Pumpkin soup is also nice with Cinnamon. Feel like eating European menu but Japan tasted. Good value for dinner. Recommend if you visit Takayama.

Amazing restaurant! Excellent food. We ate fish which was amazing. We ate a local steak that was one of the best I have ever eaten. Do not hesitate to book a place and arrive. Service with a smile and professional. Very pleasant atmosphere. Simply an experience not to be missed.
Doron H — Google review
Had the Hida Beef Rump Steak 🥩 delicious Set Menu. It came with a pumpkin soup which I enjoyed. Afterwards I was served the steak which I personally enjoyed. The meat did not have a lot of fat, it was juicy, easy to chew, and tasty. I personally would come back here again!
Gloria S — Google review
This charming French bistro is run by a husband-and-wife team, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The service was friendly and attentive, with the owner even going out of her way to move her car so we could park conveniently next to the restaurant. We opted for the set menu, which included a salad, pumpkin soup, steak, and dessert. The pumpkin soup was outstanding, and the Hida steak was truly exceptional.
Nir D — Google review
It was a magnificent meal that I won’t forget. The steak was perfect and the sides were fantastic. Also, really enjoyed the local sake they had on the menu. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Would recommend if you’re in Takayama.

Excellent restaurant, delicious food and lovely owners, highly recommend Don’t be put off by the website as doesn’t do the restaurant justice. Perfectly cooked Hida Beef steak, all other dishes delicious too, we had the chicken, steak, fish & pasta, as well as sides of potato chip fries & caesar salad and blueberry tart for desert. Can’t go wrong with selection. Tastes as good as if I was in France. Owners very nice and good English, ended up chatting with them at the end of the evening and very nice!

Japanese confectionery shop
Fujimiya is a renowned shop located in the old streets of Hida Takayama, offering gohei mochi and mitarashi dango with a traditional stall-like ambiance. The gohei mochi, a local specialty, is particularly famous and is served with a fragrant soy sauce-based sauce. The texture of the mochi retains the grainy rice feel and offers a delightful sweetness.
The kind older woman at this place makes the best soy sauce flavoured dango (salty)I've ever tasted. Maybe it's because I went there during a cold snowy season but it really warmed my soul.
Julie T — Google review
If you haven’t tried dango, come. It’s way better than those convenient store dango. Crispy on the outside and soft inside, full of rice and soy sauce umami.
Enzo G — Google review
The lady was very polite and kind, unfortunately the rice cake and dango were both just so-so. Definitely had better dango elsewhere.

Coffee shop
Falò Coffee Brewers in Takayama is a cozy and surprising café with a Scandinavian interior and minimalist vibes. The house blend espresso offers a balanced flavor of chocolatey Brazilian and healthy acidity, resulting in a cup with body and sweetness. While the variety of espresso options is limited, they offer special coffees for home brewing. It's a lovely place to take a break from the cold, offering delicious chai lattes made with actual spices and exceptional hot chocolates.
Specialty coffee is something that I look for everywhere I go. Falo hits the spot. The staff is humble and knowledgeable about coffee. We went multiple times to try the pour overs and cortados. Everything is great. The ambiance is cute modern Japanese, the service is quick. Ideal spot for solo or micro groups. I would love them to have coffee from Costa Rica.
Mohit S — Google review
Good coffee and pastries. We were able to squeeze 4 people although the place is quite small. I understand some of the other reviews about the service - the staff didn't seem super interested in helping us sit down and we're quite firm on ordering before getting a table. The almond croissant was great rare find in Japan.
Radu P — Google review
We stopped for a mod morning snack and we were so happy we did. This is, hands down, the best coffee you can find in Takayama 😌👌 And the sweets choice is 🔥 really delicious! The staff speaks perfect English and they're so nice! It was so fun to chat with Gen this morning, he made our day! Thank you so much!
Giulia D — Google review
The shop offers both coffee and non-coffee drinks, along with some sweet baked treats. The staff speak English very well and are friendly. Inside, there’s a large table that seats about 6–8 people, 2 seats at counter bar and a couple of small tables for two. The toilet is also clean and well maintained. I ordered a hot drip coffee with Kenya beans — it was bright and slightly sour, just the way I like it. Note that the shop has a rule: one person must order at least one item if you want to sit inside. If you’re visiting around Takayama, this place is definitely worth a stop!
Narukom S — Google review
Some of the best coffee in Japan. The crew are so friendly and always willing to speak English which is really nice. Thanks guys. Their coffee is expertly brewed.
Mick D — Google review
Very friendly barista who was accommodating to my caffeine sensitivity and provided a great suggestion by creating a half shot mocha instead of a full shot with oat milk. Very tasty and the sourdough bread, jam and butter was delicious as well.

We were super stoked to have stumbled upon this cafe..the coffees were so good we drove an hour the next day to get another one! The owner and the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable, speak good English too so we were able to have a good chat! Highly recommend this place for any coffee lovers!!!

Takayama Green Hotel is a laid-back hot spring hotel centrally located in Takayama, within walking distance of popular attractions like Takayama Jinya and Nakabashi Bridge. The hotel offers unfussy rooms with traditional Japanese or Western bedding options. Guests can enjoy various recreational facilities such as hot springs, a sauna, and a fitness center. With seven dining options, including 5 restaurants and a coffee shop/cafe, guests have plenty of choices for meals on-site.
We very much enjoyed our stay at this beautiful well run hotel. Our room was in the new building and the room was quite nice. I especially enjoyed the mineral water baths/onsen at the hotel. The only negative is that the hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk from the historic area. But that’s the trade off. Otherwise the hotel was one of the nicest we stayed in during our vacation Japan. Highly recommended.

Absolutely beautiful hotel ! Visited week before last - with a Titan holiday ( UK). promised review - lovely room - great sleep. food was amazing and the whole ambience of this hotel was superb ! Loved the eco friendly aspects too - and …. I got to play their lovely Yamaha piano ! All my wishes fulfilled ! Thank you ! Great hotel manager too - super PR skills !

This was one of the coolest hotels we stayed at during our trip to Japan. Great location – you can reach Takayama in just a few minutes. Our room was huge, with a wonderful view. The breakfast was more upscale than what we experienced at other hotels, and the onsen was fantastic as well. What more could you want? Sleeping on a futon bed was also a special experience.
Kristina F — Google review
We enjoyed this hotel with its own onsen. The onsen is well decorated ans very convenient. We had a Japanese style room. The best we has so far. Spacious with huge window. Still, it is a bit dated with scratches on the door. We complained about a leaking tap in the sink of our bathroom and instead of fixing it they simply shut the hot water out without notifying us. A real shame for such a place.
Shlomi S — Google review
I stayed in a Japanese style room. I had to call reception at 6pm to ask someone to set up my futon for me. Why was it not set up on arrival? The hotel is in a great location, with convenient stores nearby and within walking distance to the walking streets. The hotel has two beautiful hot spring spas, which guests can use. However, if you have tattoos, you are forbidden to enter. Some hotels offer stickers to cover tatts, but there was no mention of this service, and as the baths are to be entered naked, I was unable to use them. Overall, a comfortable stay.
Solieri G — Google review
We stayed two nights at the Green hotel. We are a family of 5. Our kids are 20, 18 and 14. We stayed in a family style room and it was fabulous!!! The rooms were so clean, so spacious and such a unique experience. I wish all rooms in Japan fit our family so well.
Patti J — Google review
The hotel has several different buildings, each offering various types of rooms — including Japanese-style, Western-style, and a newer building with modern-style rooms. The staff are very helpful and polite, and they speak English very well. When I first visited Japan, I couldn’t speak Japanese, but I was able to communicate with the staff in English without any problems. Now, after many visits, I can speak Japanese, so whether you speak English or Japanese, the staff are always ready to assist. Thank you very much for your wonderful service. With respect, I would like to offer a small suggestion to improve the guest experience. The onsens are very beautiful and relaxing. However, I noticed that many foreign guests may not be fully aware of proper bathing etiquette. It seemed that some of them did not wash thoroughly with soap before entering the onsen. In several cases, they only splashed a small amount of water on themselves for just a couple of seconds before getting in. Unfortunately, this made the experience uncomfortable for me, and I chose to leave the onsen due to hygiene concerns, which slightly affected the enjoyment of my stay. I kindly suggest placing a clear and visible sign at the onsen entrance reminding guests to wash thoroughly with soap before entering. Additionally, it may be helpful to inform guests that large towels should not be brought into the onsen. Thank you very much again for your hospitality and for considering this feedback.
Tam — Google review
A enernous and important Hotel in Takayama. At first I chose this hotel due to I have no other choice during the Takayama Matsuri. Moreover, to better arrange my schedule, I also asked the hotel some question about the Festival, and the staff really help me a lot, really appreciated. The room might seems a little old but you can feel it is well-maintenanced. I don't think there's any problem here. To better enjoy the Festival, I choose one night withou dinner, which is not bad, but you need aware there is not so many restaurant near the hotel, so if you want to find anything nearby, the only choice might be the convenience store. The hotel itself also have some restaurant for tourist but they are easily full so don't relay on them. If you don't have any plan nearby, you should choose the dinner in hotel, no matter it is Japanese or Buffet, they are all worthy. Also the Onsen is good too, just the staff might be in it when it close to the end, so you cannot stay in it to the last minute. Well, it's a bad news for people like me who like to wait to the last minute to enjoy since usually I will be the only person in Onsen at that time. However, if you are not same type of person like me, then it's not a big deal. Overall, it's a good stay in the hotel and I will recommend it.

Tori Coffee is a charming third wave coffee shop that opened in 2021 near the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Takayama. The minimalist space offers an opportunity to solve Sudoku puzzles while waiting for your coffee, and if you manage to solve it, you'll receive a souvenir. They specialize in home-roasted coffee beans and desserts, with their latte being particularly praised. The apricot cheese cake is also recommended for its perfect balance with the coffee.

Loving this place! We had espresso, latte and toast. Everything is very good and well prepared. The service is also excellent. I love the coffee so much that I bought some home too! :) I highly recommend this cafe.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon, wasn't too busy. Genuine 5 star place. The staff patience with my broken Japanese and my quirky order. We ordered iced pour over coffee with a splash of oat milk and the pumpkin cheesecake. The pour over coffee was very smooth and brewed perfectly with no acidic or bitter taste. The cheesecake was perfect- not too heavy, but balanced cheese and pumpkin tones without over powering each other. We even won a prize for solving the Sudoku and the staff commented how quickly. Lovely atmosphere to sit inside too. A definite recommendation 👌

A small but modern and cute café (for groups of 4 or less). We took the iced matcha with oat milk and a banana caramel pound cake. Everything was delicious. The sound resonates which probably explains the choice to have smaller groups. Staff is super polite and friendly.

Lovely cafe with a relaxing vibe. We came here for the affogato and it was phenomenal. The banana caramel cake was not too heavy nor too sweet. The staff were warm and friendly. U get a sudoku puzzle from the staff and if you solve it, they will give u a gift, which was a really nice gesture. Note that big groups of 5 or more are not allowed.

quiet and aesthetically appealing cafe, with tables spaced out nicely apart water and napkin is served after you ordered and seated down menu attached as per below but do note prices are back in nov’24 if you order one drink and one food by yourself, the owner will give you one sudoku to solve. after you solve it, you will get a postcard to keep for memory ✨

I love everything about this place. The coffee is perfect. It was very flavorful and well balanced. The presentation was world class. Honestly, I’ve never seen better latte art before. The cozy bakery offers freshly baked sourdough breads and pastries such as Kouign-amann and canele. Bustling bakery with many locals. They serve amazing baked goods, some of the best we’ve ever had! Tried the kouign amann, canelé, baguette and far breton, all were great but we especially enjoyed the sweet pastries which had a crunchy caramel shell and light and crisp layers. Staff were really friendly too.

Chateraise Takayama is a unique gem in Japan, renowned throughout Asia for its locally crafted pastries. The patisserie takes pride in creating seasonal delicacies and offers a wide array of delectable treats, including the highly recommended green tea cake and caramel custard pudding available in two sizes. Visitors can indulge in an assortment of cakes, breads, and local desserts, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Surprised by the diversity of products offered here, they sell fruit cakes, milk ice cream, frozen products such as pizzas, beef curry, and also wines. It’s more than just a pastry shop, it’s a high-end grocery store. Chateraise is a confectionery company that started in 1954 with a small shop in Kofu City. The name “Châteraisé” is actually a romanization of the company’s Japanese name, which is “シャトレーゼ”. It’s also a combination of two French words: “château” and “cerise”. The name was chosen to evoke the image of a castle surrounded by cherry blossoms, which is a very appreciated image in Japan.

There are a variety of other cakes, Western sweets, and Japanese sweets to choose from for events, errands, and everyday use. I've never had bad customer service or the cash register, and I'm always greeted with a smile, which makes me feel good. However, if the staff is crowded, it may not be possible to respond well, so I think it's best to take it with a grain of salt. Also, I avoid times when it's likely to be crowded.

Andersen is a must-visit spot at the Miyagawa Morning Market, offering a delectable selection of light and fluffy croissants. The freshly baked croissants come in various flavors such as plain, chocolate, and red bean (anko). The anko croissant stands out for its hot filling and irresistibly fluffy shell. Enjoying these treats with a cup of hot coffee by the river makes for a delightful experience.
If you're a fan of freshly baked croissants, Andersen is a must-visit! These croissants are light, flaky, and perfectly buttery—the best we've ever had. The texture is delicate, with just the right amount of crispness on the outside and a soft, melt-in-your-mouth interior. A key tip: pay first to reserve your croissants, or you risk missing out, as they tend to sell out quickly. The demand is high, but once you get your hands on one, it's totally worth it. If you're in the area and craving an unforgettable croissant, Andersen delivers!

Loved it! Perfect crisp outer covering the buttery inner layers. Got one of each flavour - butter, chocolate and red bean. All were amazing. Definitely worth the wait.

One of the softest and tastiest pastries we had in Japan. It was hot and absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend trying it when you’re at the market.

You should not miss this out when going to the Miyagawa Morning Market. They serve amazingly delicious croissants. The anko flavor is my personal favorite. This store is for takeout food only.

I can’t say that this is better than whatever you can find in Paris or wherever in France. I’ve been to France too many times I lost count but when you are in Takayama and like a taste of croissant, come here and you won’t be disappointed! If you want some better croissant, go to France!
Kris D — Google review
Do not eat one night before, come here in the morning and eat croissant much as u can.. my favourite is Anko Croissant 🥐 yummmyyy
Mustafa K — Google review
We were looking for a quick breakfast spot and stumbled upon Miyagawa morning market. The smell led us to try the croissant, and it didn’t disappoint. It was really good-crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.

I have to say the Anko Pan Croissant was amazing.. texture of the KWASAN was soft, flakey and there are hits of black sesame seeds.. I was lucky to get the fresh batch at 11:09am… get the coffee next door too!

Japanese confectionery shop
Bunrindo is a must-visit store in Hida Takayama during the chestnut season. Their Kuriyose, a Japanese sweet made with strained bean paste and freshly harvested chestnuts, offers an elegant sweetness that perfectly complements matcha. The shop also offers delicious chestnut kinton and homemade rakugan with cute designs. Visitors praise the light sweetness of their chestnuts and recommend trying the brown sugar manju, which can be fried at home for a fresh taste.
We bought some sweet souvenirs there and a sakura bun (the size of a bread loaf) filled with red bean past. Quite delicious. The shop owner was really kind as well.
Johannes E — Google review
The shop made their own rakugan (a type of traditional Japanese confectionery made of sugar, glutinous rice flour, and water). The designs are cute. I also had yogomi, which is red bean mochi coloured with mugwort leaves. The mugwort leaves give it an unique leafy taste.
