Restaurant
Dame's Chicken & Waffles is a laid-back eatery that offers a variety of classic and unique waffle combinations, including vegan, sweet potato, and gingerbread options. The restaurant is renowned for serving some of the best fried chicken in the city.
Good place to eat comfort food. Chelsea is an amazing server. Clear to the point, super sweet and has great charisma. Food: Chicken was delicious. Great flavor and cook. The breading on the chicken was perfect crunch. Nice and succulent. Waffle is okay, not my favorite as I prefer a lighter batter. They a variety of smears and drizzles for your waffle and chicken to help enhance the flavor. Customize to your hearts desire. Mac n cheese had a nice herbal seasoning in it. Greens were solid. Beer options limited but I did enjoy my Italian Pilsner. Try their lemonade and tea. Paid street parking is available and there is a lot as well where you can validate your ticket. Interior pays homage to jazz with the greats.

4/29/25 11am 3 women, it was my mom’s birthday. At first the waitress was cool a little short with us but nice. We ordered chicken and waffles. Three plates of chicken was dry and warm after we waited 20 minutes. I call over the waitress and she played dumb like she didn’t understand. She did take the chicken back I asked her to send the manager. She said she’ll take care of it. It was literally 2 tables of customers. She comes back and say the manager said even if he takes the chicken back it will come out looking the same. SOOO we finished our other items we ordered and long behold a new table of customers got light golden chicken. The cooks In the back was all looking at us and having side conversation. I called the waitress over and asked her how come out chicken don’t look like the other tables. She just stared and said idk.
Love S — Google review
Flavorful chicken and waffles - loved the peach/apricot butter. Our sides - collard greens, mac & cheese, and squash were good. Salmon was okay but overcooked and burned on each end. I realize that chicken and waffles is the specialty, but if something else is on the menu, it should be good, too. Chelsea was our attentive server. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we waited three minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Chelsea noticed us and ask the host to seat us, so we were fortunate to have her as our server.
Debra Q — Google review
The food was good. We used to go to the old place and this was our first time at the new place. The atmosphere and vibe were great. The waffles were still good. The chicken was really good even though the spices were changed somewhat but not always for the best in my opinion. Nonetheless, the chicken was good. It’s a great place to visit to celebrate a family milestone like a graduation, birthday or anniversary. Food prices are on the high end but worth it.
Monica C — Google review
These people refried chicken that someone else didn't want and reheated a waffle that was rubbery. Food came out fast as 3 mins after ordering it. Im sitting here sick now. I just left yesterday. Instead of the waitress letting manager know I wasn't satisfied she didn't say nothing about it to them but kept asking if I want a takeout box. That's nasty. Won't go there anymore
Jazmyne M — Google review
Dame’s Chicken & Waffles used to be one of my favorite places to eat, but recently my experiences with both the food and customer service have been disappointing. I don’t usually leave reviews, but I felt it was important to share my experience because we all work hard for our money and deserve good quality food—especially at these prices. I always order the same thing when I visit, typically choosing cutlets over legs. I often bring family here when they’re in town because I love their food. This time, however, I was served legs instead of cutlets. At first, I thought maybe my friend got the legs by mistake, but then I noticed the quality of the chicken was really poor. It looked extremely old—there’s no way it should have been served. I usually get mac and cheese as my side, but this time the flavor was off. It tasted like it had too much pepper and Italian seasoning, which was not the usual flavor I enjoy. I called the restaurant to address the issue, and the manager, Chelsey, seemed a bit defensive and said they never sold cutlets with my order—only legs. To confirm, I checked with others who ordered the same meal, including my dad, who also received cutlets. Chelsey offered to replace the chicken the next day if I brought it back, which seemed unusual and a bit unsanitary. I did return the chicken and received a fresh replacement, after waiting about 10-15min to speak to the manger which was nice and understanding. But unfortunately, it was tough, chewy, and overcooked. I’m really disappointed and don’t think I’ll be coming back. In the past, I gave the benefit of the doubt to the staff, thinking maybe they were just having a bad day or consider the food could have been rushed because they’re usually very busy. But this experience was the last straw for me.
Tyrell B — Google review
It took 20min for our order to be taken, another 20min for our drinks to arrive, yet another 35min for food (almost an hour between ordering/receiving), and the overpriced food was mediocre at best. The chicken was decent but greasy, the incredibly bland/boring waffles were soggy and undercooked in the middle, and the "scrambled eggs" came out fried with rock-hard yolks. They were also out of half their shmears and refused to sub grits for any other side for someone who doesn't eat grits. Finally, the new location is super sketchy, the building is so loud that you can't hear yourself think, and it's challenging to find parking... Will NOT be back.
Greg — Google review
I will no longer be eating from any of the Dame’s locations. This restaurant used to serve great food with solid service. Now, every time I order take out the order is wrong. Today they forgot my drizzle, gave the wrong shmear, the chicken was overdone, and the Mac and cheese is burnt, nevermind the fact that the food wasn’t even started at the time that I arrived at pickup. This is not the quality of food or service that made Dame’s a Durham staple, and I have given them enough chances to correct this issue. I do not recommend going there anymore

Seafood restaurant
Saltbox Seafood Joint is a popular counter-serve spot that originated from a roadside shack, offering local and seasonal seafood. The place is known for its lightly fried and incredibly fresh seafood served on humble rolls, such as North Carolina striped mullet and king mackerel. Customers can also enjoy honey-drizzled hush puppies, house tea, and a lemon punch combo drink at the picnic tables out front.
This place is an indefinite 10 in my book. The customer service was great, the cashier, Tavion, made some great recommendations and was super personable and polite. Based on Customer Service alone, I would have come back. I happen to see this restaurant on a TikTok video and decided to try it out with my son after a track meet we were at got rained out. We got the catfish, the fried shrimp, the crispy potatoes, the honey hush puppies, and the collard greens. Everything was delicious. The catfish was delicate and flavorful, the shrimp were crispy and juicy, the honey hush puppies were the perfect combination of sweet and savory, the crispy potatoes were delicious, and I loved the peppers and onions in them, the tartar sauce, and the cocktail sauce were not your run of the mill versions and we’re so flavorful and delicious, and the greens were a home run. The aesthetic for the restaurant was very on team for the type of food they served and it was super clean inside and had a good size parking lot. When we came in there was no wait but quickly thereafter the line piled up and I can see why. If I had to give any criticism I would say I wasn’t a fan of the sweet tea, but wasn’t a big deal for me at all because I was able to grab a fountain drink instead so honestly not an issue for me at all. I’ve already recommended this place to several people and it’s only been about four hours since us being there. The next time we are in Durham, we will definitely be making another stop to try some other menu items and I can’t wait! I really want to thank this restaurant for such great food and service. I feel like the combination is that times a rarity when eating out so it was much appreciated.

I’ve had Saltbox on my list for a while, and finally made a trip to Durham to try it, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We ordered the crab cakes with crispy potatoes, the spicy mahi sandwich, an order of hush-honeys, plus drinks: Uncle Waithley’s ginger beer and an Arnold Palmer. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. You can really tell that all the sauces and sides are made from scratch—it elevates the entire meal. The crab cakes were tender and perfectly seasoned, the sandwich had just the right amount of heat, and those hush-honeys were the kind of sweet-savory bite you dream about later. The atmosphere sealed the experience for me. They had blues playing in the background, which gave it that warm, soulful vibe that just fits. I also loved seeing Uncle Waithley’s (a Black-owned brand) as a beverage option: it shows intention and community in the details. If you’ve been eyeing Saltbox like I was, make the trip. It’s one of those restaurants that not only delivers on flavor but also feels good to support. I’ll definitely be back.

A piece of the ocean in the middle of Durham! What a treat to have fresh seafood made to order in this restaurant. Counter service ordering, then sit inside or out. The portions at lunch were plentiful, filling the paper take out boxes that all customers get, as well as our appetites.
David D — Google review
Our friends took us here on Friday and it was beyond anything I had imagined. As soon as you park, you get the smell of fresh seafood, like you have arrived at the local beach. The building is small, shack like. When we opened the doors, there was a line and limited seating. The crowd was lively and full of locals acting like they didn’t want their secret to get out. They have a chalkboard menu that changes daily to reflect the local catch from the North Carolina waters. Food includes: shrimp, muscles, flounder, grouper, mahi, soft shell crab, oysters and catfish. I ordered the spicy mahi roll and it was amazing: from the Aroma, taste, crunch from the coleslaw. It perfectly hit the spot. Chef Ricky Moore opened this spot in 2012. He graduated CIA school and was also a cook in the army. This place has been featured in Southern Living Magazine and won a James Beard award in 2022. DO NOT MISS THIS SPOT NEXT TIME YOU ARE IN DURHAM!
Andrew R — Google review
Phenomenal food and service. We loved our rolls (one shrimp and one grouper). The side of Brussels was also delicious. There are no words for how good the coleslaw is… and beautiful to boot!
Elizabeth C — Google review
The BEAUTIFULLY seasoned and cooked fried potato side was worth the price of admission! They weren’t just salted but SEASONED! The cole slaw and collard greens tasted like a person actually cooked them. No typical “straight out the can” predictably (non) flavored side dishes. My tongue was happy. But the catfish! THANK YOU, Chef Ricky and crew. When fish tastes good even without hot sauce, that’s GOOD!

French restaurant
Vin Rouge is a classic French restaurant known for its intimate and upscale atmosphere, offering an extensive wine list to complement the cuisine. The executive chef, Matt Kelly, has brought authentic Spanish tapas to the vibrant eatery Mateo Bar de Tapas.
Simply delicious! The restaurant is so quaint and beautiful. Feels like you're actually in France! Our server was just awesome and so accommodating. A manger stopped by and was very friendly and genuinely concerned that everything was perfect. French onion soup, fries, and baked oysters were all outstanding! Will return soon!

Any time I review one of Giorgio’s restaurant, I always disclose that I am current staff at one of his restaurants, as I wouldn’t feel comfortable reviewing otherwise: Peer review systems are important 🙂 Arriving at the doors you’re instantly met by a wealth of smiles/friendly faces. The experience is absolutely stellar. Jax our server, was professional, knowledgeable, made excellent food, and wine recommendations, was extremely kind, and coursed everything out perfectly like a champ. Support worked hard to ensure there were clean utensils and dishes throughout the entire meal. Management, Alex, was incredibly welcoming, I felt right at home, as if I dined there 100 times before. Absolutely incredible.

I wanted to try this restaurant as a birthday treat. The atmosphere was nice and lended itself to the special occasion. The cheese and wine were so good, but the lamb/potato chef’s special (pictured below) was absolutely awful; it was too salty and had a weird texture. I also noticed they delivered my entree to the wrong table, took it back, walked out the room, and then brought it to me. Of note, I appreciated the candle lit dessert they provided at the end of my meal.
Rakiah A — Google review
This is such a cool and quaint little restaurant. So much effort in the atmosphere. The employees in particular are well trained and very pleasant. It's refined without being pretentious. Just really nice French dining at a reasonable price. The menu is simple and tailored to items they excel in, so you don't need to worry about what you order. Highly recommend. Parking is a little rough in this area. Plan ahead.

I had an intimate wedding dinner here in the red room. It was perfect for our group of 14 (but there was room for a couple more). The service was incredible. I felt so well taken care of the whole time, and the food was magnificent (as it always is here). They printed custom menus with our names and date which I thought was a sweet touch. I would highly recommend for a high-end private event!
Jennifer M — Google review
Always a top notch experience! From the moment you walk through the door until you leave, it's always great. Host staff and wait staff are excellent. We visited this time for our 25th anniversary. Started with a cocktail and wine. Snails and a cheese plate. I'm not into snails, but my wife lives them. The cheeses were delicious! Hanger steak for me, fish for the wife. Perfect! Got an on-the-house chocolate something or other for our anniversary. Soooo decadent!
John H — Google review
We were blown away by our dining experience here. I grew up in France, and am a big foodie, loving Michelin starred restaurants. This Durham restaurant where I went with my son blew us away with the quality of its flavours, cuisine, and produce. The menu is simple but rich and varied, the produce is excellent, and it's cooked to perfection. And the bill was very reasonable, and the service friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!!

The service was THE BEST! The folks there were chill yet knowledgeable and attentive. The food prep and presentation was most pleasant! They have an excellent wine menu so - enjoy! Would return again!

Italian restaurant
Mothers & Sons Trattoria is a charming and stylish eatery that specializes in crafting homemade Italian cuisine, along with serving craft cocktails and wine. The restaurant is renowned for its fine dining experience in Durham, offering some of the best Italian food in the area. With a focus on regional Italian dishes and seasonal ingredients, Mothers & Sons Trattoria captures the essence of traditional Italian cooking.
We enjoyed our meal. We shared the burrata and Buffalo mozzarella. Both were incredible. I had a seasonal pasta of pesto made with ramps and he had bucatini. We shared a gianduja budino for desert, which neither of us had heard of, but we both really enjoyed. The tables were pretty close together and I don't think a wheelchair would fit through. When I went to the restroom,I thought it might be gender neutral because I didn't see a sign, but it was multi stall, so it had to be? When I left I saw a picture of a woman next to the door. Was that supposed to count as a sign? It just looked like a picture on the wall.

Beautiful interior with comfortably well executed dishes and flavor profiles. Love the vibes of the bar and the atmosphere. Solid selection of amaros and cocktails to pick from. Delicious selection of meats. Solid comfort food in general, warm and inviting on the tongue like a blanket of savory flavor in each dish.
John L — Google review
Fantastic food and service! We can’t wait to return in our next trip. Pastas were al dente without having to ask, the porch Etta is perfect for sharing and the crispy octopus was tender on the inside.
Francis S — Google review
Service was great; we had a wonderful server. We ordered the mozzarella and beet salad which was unique and flavorful. I ordered the paccheri cacio e pepe pasta and my husband ordered the butternut squash dunderi. My pasta was good, not over the top delicious but good. My husband’s was disappointing as it was cold, from the dunderi to the sauce. That was unfortunate and made the overall food experience a negative.
Rachel S — Google review
My mom and I had a great dinner at Mother and Son's last night! I made a reservation to celebrate my mom's birthday, and the host greeted us with a tasteful little "Happy birthday" note. Our server, Alicia, was wonderful! Super knowledgeable, kind, and funny. And very low key but sweet about my mom's birthday. She gave us a free cannolo with a little candle in it at the end :) The food was very good. We split a green salad, eggplant parmesan, and sides of rapini and polenta. The rapini was weakest--very bitter and not much other flavor. The other dishes were great! Very generous serving sizes.
Lev K — Google review
Get the Dunderi (gnocchi)! This place had one of the best pasta dishes I've had in the triangle in terms of uniqueness and flavor. You won't find a dish like this one, squash, brown butter sauce (I think), and the Tagliatelle al Ragu was also phenomenal. Burschetta was good, arancini was good, desert of Panna cotta was also good. Overall top 5 Italian restaurant in the triangle, a must-try if you love Italian and like to try new places! Alexander was a fantastic server and I barely got a pic of our food before it was gone!
Whitaker B — Google review
I've been here 4 times this year. The first visit was the best and the experience has been worse every time I come. The bread was cold and hard. The staff is so busy that it takes awhile to get your order in, get water refilled, for the bill, etc. It took so long that at the end the waitress did not even ask if we wanted dessert. We were also ready to go home. Some plates are delicious and others were nothing spectacular. Overall experience is that they are too busy to make sure you're having a good experience.
Yeaji C — Google review
I wasn't crazy about the menu. would liked to have seen some type of shrimp and scallop pasta, something other than a tomato sauce in general; Osso Bucco would be easy for the kitchen and great for the cooler months over saffron risotto...also pricey, and the wines by the glass are under poured. But it's great that they make their own pasta, and my wife seemed to like it more than I did.

Sushi restaurant
M Sushi is a trendy, dimly lit restaurant with an industrial-chic ambiance that serves traditional Japanese seafood and sushi. Located in Durham, it is part of the city's thriving culinary scene. The restaurant is led by Michael Lee, a chef known for his creative approach to local ingredients. The menu features an ambitious tasting experience that showcases Lee's culinary expertise and playful use of fresh, locally-sourced components.
My 2 friends and I did the grand omakase. We had a reservation but did not have to ask for the grand omakase beforehand. It is not like a typical "omakase" where you are in a separate seating area with a dedicated sushi chef, but we still felt attended to while sitting at the bar. The whole course was delicious and so satisfying! We sat at the bar which was nice as the sushi chefs served us directly and explained each dish to us. Our waiter, Chad, was also very accommodating and helpful in explaining the dishes. The atmosphere is cool, located in a dimly lit "basement" right next to the Durham Hotel. FYI there is a cobblestone walkway leading up to the restaurant entrance (be mindful if you are in heels). Though pricey, I would definitely do this again with some sushi-loving friends!
Nova T — Google review
This is a hidden little spot for sure. If you are trying to find it look down the alley by the Durham Hotel. The sign for the restaurant is not too big, so it can be easily missed. Food for the price was ok I am a sushi critic and this was good but not something i would say really order again. The ambience was a vibe. I would recommend getting a reservation. They do have very limited seating. Parking garage is about less than one block away. On the weekends, I guess after a certain time is free because we were able to get out of the deck without paying.
Nicolette A — Google review
I’ve eaten a lot of sushi and Japanese food in general, and this is among the best. The fish is incredibly fresh, and they combine flavors and textures very well, with simple but elegant presentation. The Grand Omakase was amazing start to finish! Service was very good, with a hiccup or two towards the end. Bar seating is really fun!
Jeffrey Z — Google review
M Sushi is an incredible, fresh, and professionally delicious sushi establishment tucked away in Durham. On a busy night, I was lucky to find a seat at the bar. I then decided I would get the Grand Chef Omakase to get a full tasting menu to see everything the establishment had to offer. Every single dish I was presented with for the 7 course experience was incredibly beautiful and visually stunning, with the quality of food and taste going even further. It was all so fresh and cut or cooked to perfection. I had the privilege of sitting at the sushi bar as well, so I was able to watch the absolute masters put together these masterpieces. If you can ever experience the Grand Chef Omakase, it is very expensive, but worth it. This establishment makes art and it is spectacular.
Mario G — Google review
My favorite little hideaway in Durham. Consistently excellent sushi, wagyu, and dessert. I’m obsessed with the lobster dumpling starter. Reservations are a good idea since it fills up even on weeknights. My only gripe: the pacing can feel rushed, with starters sometimes landing after mains or everything arriving at once. For the price I’d expect a smoother flow of service, but the food keeps me coming back.
Jesi — Google review
We were 5 adults and the table was very tight for us. Most of us did the nigiri omakase which was alright. The fish selection was very good, but the rice was either too compacted or it fell apart when handling with the hands. The miso soup was decent and the sake was nice. We’ve previously done the grand omakase, and I definitely think the nigiri omakase is the better deal. I do feel that the price is still a little high for what you get, but that’s most likely a result of today’s world.
Paul C — Google review
This is my absolutely favorite sushi place! I’ve been here so many times already, never disappointed. Sushi, rolls, small plates - all is super delicious. Book a table in advance especially for the weekend visit. And it takes a while to find parking.

Amazing sushi, I got the nigiri omakase which is totally worth it. The fish was super fresh, and the rice was at the perfect temperature and texture. Our server Kim was very knowledgeable and recommended great sake.

Looking for southern style food, mainly veggies and stumbled across PICNIC! I cannot think of anything I would change! Food was seasoned very well. Can’t beat the quality of food ordering 2 minutes before close! Staff were very welcoming and accommodating ! The dining area was very clean and music set the tone for a relaxed experience. I ordered buttermilk friend chicken ✅ collard greens ✅ Brussels sprouts ✅! I also tasted BBQ, potato salad and cole slaw ✅. I will definitely visit again and recommend others!

Went there for the BBQ ribs, but it was sold out. I was told that happens often I need to come earlier. I ordered fried green tomatoes, a cheese burger and salad instead. The burger looked like your average burger, but it wasn't,it was delicious. My meal came with Hush Puppies . These were the first hush puppies I've ever liked , it was very good . I will definitely order the salad and Fried Green Tomatoes again.

Very authentic Carolina BBQ! Ribs were delicious. Brisket was very tasty! Sides were traditional and flavorful. (My only observation is I like more ground pepper in my slaw) The staff was super friendly and helpful. The pig was off the hook!

Driving back to MD had to give NC BBQ a second try (and hopefully not get sick this time). Heard great things about this place across the internet, so decided to stop by. It’s definitely a bit out of the way, but I can tell you it’s 100% worth it. Beautiful outdoor and picnic area when you park, and you walk in to this old school type of bar/restaurant. Tons of nostalgic items displayed across the walls and behind the bar, as well as a huge black board with specials and drinks which makes ordering easy. I grabbed a local Rice Lager by Funguys Brewing, that sadly was oxidized. Not the bar’s fault though, but was really disappointed about that. Went classic and got a BBQ sandwich and fries, which came with coleslaw and hush puppies. Now the fries and hush puppies were perfectly cooked. Crispy with a good crunch, but then soft in the middle. When it comes to the sandwich — I guess I just don’t get NC BBQ. Medium sized sandwich on a potato roll with a bunch of dry, mildly seasoned meat. I dumped 1/8th of a bottle of Pig Whistle BBQ Sauce (only thing available) and it really didn’t add much except for the taste of vinegar. Threw the coleslaw on there too, and still just didn’t blend right. Now overall, everything tasted good, it’s just not my cup of tea. The service was absolutely amazing and the rest of the menu looks phenomenal so I’ll definitely be giving it a second try when I’m back down next week!

So yummy! Loved the casual atmosphere and service. We got a table immediately and our server was wonderful. The Brussels sprouts were to die for. Big portions so you won’t leave hungry.

The food was very good, they have a great beer selection, and the place looks great. We sat at the bar and the energy of the place was fun. The brisket and pulled pork plate was delicious. It looks small when it comes out, but it's plenty of food.

Cocoa Cinnamon is a beloved coffeehouse founded in 2013 by Leon and Areli Barrera de Grodski, offering single-origin coffee, tea, and drinking chocolate. The cafe pays tribute to key spices that have shaped civilizations through delicious offerings. Their signature La Frida latte features mole syrup from Arelis family recipe and rose petal garnish. Starting with a custom-made coffee bike, the couple has expanded to three successful locations and a roasting business.
Amazing little coffee shop with plenty of unique non-coffee drinks too! Extensive hot cocoa + tea latte collection. Strong coffee variety. Very impressive menu. Some pastry options. Adorable pottery for mugs, bit of a cozy rustic feel. Dark hot cocoa was a bit watery. The whipped cream + Carmel sauce was a must. Would be enthused to explore other drink varieties. Several tables in the back with outlets / wifi for remote/laptop working. Also a good place to read a book. Lively, but not packed, on a Sunday late-afternoon.

Cocoa Cinnamon is one of my favorite coffee shops in Durham. The quality of the coffee and syrups is amazing and I feel great supporting this local business. My go to is an iced Guadalajara but I have tried their lattes and churros, which were also amazing!

I love cocoa cinnamon, it’s quickly become one of my favorite coffee stops in durham. good service, fast and good coffee, and delicious snacks from ninth st bakery available along with a full list of ingredients - my favorite is the gluten free m&m monster cookie. indoor and outdoor seating available. it can be a little uncomfortable sometimes when the homeless approach or stare but is otherwise a lovely place to hang out and chat or work.

Great coffee shop in Durham. The coffee is 10/10! The atmosphere is really neat. Only complaint is that it’s difficult to find parking.

Not terribly impressed. Coffee was Ok, pastry I had Ok. Over priced, tight space in old building, lots of activity outside- cars passing, school groups passing, some questionable vagrants about. Ok for collage students, but not a quiet cozy atmosphere. My wife ordered a Mokha coffee, I ordered a Carmelo coffee. When they called my name, I came up to take both of them to the table we had outside. I tasted each one and couldn’t tell the difference between either one. They had very little flavor, maybe some coffee flavor, but watered down. The chocolate croissant I had had very little chocolate in it . The cinnamon roll I had was doughy with sugary top was OK,for what it was.

Love this place, I’ve had two of their hot chocolate flavors (on repeat for days) and they are so so good 🤤 Its a super cool place to work from, love the outdoor sitting and the sunlight it gets, their team is also super sweet.

The vibe of this place is absolutely amazing. This was our first time…staff seemed to be very kind to the regulars- responsive at best to us- I got a peppermint tea but tbh it was just hot water- no flavor of peppermint. Daughter got a delicious dark hot chocolate with added cayenne. It was amazingly velvety and just perfectly yummy.

My favorite coffee shop in Durham. Their latte Al Mokha is soo good, and most of their syrups are made in-house. Cozy interior seating, lovely & spacious exterior seating. Great place to take your friends out for coffee or to go and get some work done (free & reliable WiFi!)

Restaurant
Goorsha offers traditional Ethiopian cuisine in a casual setting, featuring dishes like sambusa, kekel, and spicy vegan stews. The restaurant's focus on healthy vegetarian and vegan options is evident in its staple injera bread made with teff flour. The vegan platter allows diners to choose from a variety of flavorful options cooked with traditional Ethiopian spices.
It’s an amazing feeling when you come in a place for the first time and being embraced like you been here a thousand times before. They are welcoming, the menu has many options, reasonably priced and they are very attentive. Had a goof conversation with the waiter he brought me back to Africa by trying some authentic African cuisine. I enjoyed the experience and would definitely come back

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Goorsha is a gem in Durham for Ethiopian cuisine! The ambiance is modern yet cozy, and the staff were super friendly and attentive throughout our meal. We ordered the Goorsha Signature Combo, and it was delicious—rich flavors, perfectly spiced stews, and soft, tangy injera that tied it all together. The lentils and shiro really stood out, and the portion sizes were generous. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that service was a bit on the slow side, especially for drinks, but the food made up for it. Great spot whether you’re new to Ethiopian food or a longtime fan. Will definitely be back!

Came for lunch with a coworker, and we're waited on by the owner, Fasil. Such a genuinely nice guy, and you could absolutely see the pride he had for us to be his customers. There aren't many places you can go and encounter the actual owner AND their appreciation for your business. We started with Sambusas and Deko sauce. Savory and simple, but the Deko was an incredible touch. I had the Zilzil Alecha, and it was absolutely tender, savory, and decadent. I'm not even sure what my coworker got, but we both were absolutely satisfied with the app and lunch. Will definitely be back! I've been wanting to get Ethiopian for the longest time, and I am NOT disappointed. Amazing!

B: the food tasted fresh and the portions were great. The beef was so tender that it felt buttery when you picked it up. It was my first time trying Ethiopian food and was pleasantly surprised with the spice similarities to my own culture! The environment was very welcoming and the staff were attentive.

Been meaning to come to this place for a decade but I finally made it!!!! It's really good! Personally I prefer the vegetarian option where you can choose 3 different stuff. Though the wrap is thinner than I am usually used to. Definitely get the Sambusa!!! Overall, still recommended!
John L — Google review
Great food. Mango Frescas are so good. The Kasheka is a must have. It's delicious. I had the Zilzil Alecha and it was very flavorful. I enjoyed it a lot. My friend got the Doro Tibs, which is also good. That dish is spicy. The Beet salad for our side was good as well.
Cindy C — Google review
The portions are incredibly small for what you pay. Ordered Doro Wat, and it came with a singular chicken leg, one boiled egg, and the rest in sauce. With tax and tip it comes out to well over $25 per person. Imagine eating one chicken leg and one egg when you order an entree for dinner. Vegan entrees were a little better, but still the main dish to injera ratio is way skewed to just eating bread to fill up. Don’t even get apps, literally one bite for $10. The food tastes great. Every bite is delicious. But I can’t stress how terrible the portion sizes are at this place for what you pay. Service is slow as well, no one came to check in on the diners, they clearly have their favorite customers. No water refills. Other tables have to ask for refills. Had to ask the servers for a check. Overall one of the lackluster Ethiopian restaurants I’ve been to. This place is way overhyped on Eater and other restaurant guides online. Only saving grace is that they’re the only Ethiopian joint in the area.
Joe Y — Google review
I love the food. It’s always good! I honestly very unsatisfied with the portions for the price that’s asked for. Each time I went the portions got smaller and smaller. This time I ask to have the food without the injeria and I figured they may give me more portions, but no. For $19 and this little amount of food, I’m still hungry :( I love this place but the portions are very sad! I hope you all look into it more!

Soul food restaurant
The Chicken Hut, a long-standing soul food restaurant in Durham, has a rich history dating back to the 1950s. Originally located at NC-55 and Riddle Road, it was later moved to its current location on Fayetteville Street due to weather conditions and urban renewal. The restaurant is renowned for its home-cooked meals, particularly its famous fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and cobblers.
Heads up: this business is CASH ONLY. However it is 1000% worth it. This place was recommended to us and it took us a while to find the time to visit as it’s only open for lunch M-F. There is parking behind the building, on the street, or even the Food Lion parking lot. We didn’t realize it was a cash only establishment (don’t let that dissuade you!); we went to food lion and did cash back $40. When you walk in there is a counter in front and a dining area to the right. You are to proceed to the dining area and join the line. There is no printed menu and the staff taking your order were extremely patient and welcoming, despite being slammed. They make fried chicken to order so it will be about 20-25 before you food is ready. They had other options if you’re pressed for time: baked chicken, baked spaghetti, BBQ ribs, and more. Your box (essentially a plate meal) comes with 2 sides of your choice (we did mac n cheese each, fried okra, and collards), along with a roll or hush puppies. As you move down the line, you can pick up something sweet like a slice of cake or cobbler. Your meal includes a drink (lemonade, sweet tea, fruit punch, or water). They hand you a ticket with your order total which you will take back to the counter when you first entered. Our two plates (dark piece meals) were $16.99 each. Do not scoff at the price as this was a hefty amount of food for the price and they make it all in house and fresh. The service was phenomenal and we were even treated to a slice of cake as it was our first visit. We will be eating here again, and would recommend to anyone looking for classic southern comfort food.

So good! I one fried chicken. This one was worth seeking out. Cash only and better off parking at Food Lion across the street, but definitely check them out. Everything was hot, fresh, and delicious. Plus, you're greeted with the most welcoming hello! If you're into fried chicken and/or all things southern comfort food. This is the spot for you! I had the fried dark meat with mac n cheese and sweet potatoes, oh and cake!

Wanted some soul food, looked it up and The Chicken Hut was one that popped up. I was sceptical because of the parking situation. Went inside and found out I needed cash, no cards accepted. My 90's music was playing and the man behind the counter dishing out the food was very polite and friendly. He takes care of each customer personally. I got the fried chicken plate, wings (white and dark plates are available), with 2 sides, Mac & cheese, greens, hush puppies and an extra 2 sides, yams and cabbage. I got mine to go so when I got home and started eating,,,, it was great!! Everything already seasoned. I spent about $28 for all this and it's well worth the money. I will be going back soon. The only one thing I didn't like is their hours of operation 😁 They need to stay open later or reopen for dinner 😁

I love The Chicken Hut! It’s a family owned business and there’s always good vibes when I arrive! I love the music/video they have playing upon arrival. Food is always good and fresh! I absolutely love their oxtails! I miss their chitterlings too lol!
Toni T — Google review
It was my first time here and I couldn’t decide between fried chicken or oxtail and they kindly gave me a small portion of oxtail to try. It was so good that I got the oxtail plate to go for dinner, and it was delicious even after reheating it hours later. The chicken was so tender and flavorful, the batter was so crispy and perfect. The oxtail was honestly fall off the bone tender and sauce was so tasty!! Really loved the Mac and cheese, cabbage and collard greens as well. The slightly vinegary taste cut through the fattiness and made it so delicious. The portion size is huge too so it’s really good value for money! The atmosphere and service was great too, the people were super friendly and explained the dishes to us since it was our first time there. I would definitely recommend everyone making a stop here whenever they’re in Durham!

This place is a treasure in our community. The staff are friendly yet efficient. The food is excellent. Since they're open mostly at lunch, we get their fried chicken and hold it in a warm oven until dinner. I've had a number of other things on their menu, too, like the oxtails which are amazing. We are lucky to have The Chicken Hut here in Durham and they've been great members of the community for a long time.

Everything is great. What else is there to say? The fried foods are cooked to order, and the sides are seasoned extremely well. A well-rounded, great soul food meal. I can’t wait to come back the next time in Durham. One thing to note, they are cash only, so be prepared for that.

Mateo Bar de Tapas is a trendy spot in downtown Durham, housed in a former Book Exchange building. The restaurant offers a blend of Southern-style tapas with an Iberian influence, creating unique flavor combinations such as BBQ pork with piquillo cheese and roasted bone marrow with oxtail marmalade. Chef Matthew Kelly's culinary expertise shines through the rich selection of Spanish flavors, some even infused with local touches.
OMG seriously.... The food here was Ahhhhmmaaazzzinngggg!!! Our waitress Kate was so awesome. The vibes were so chill and I love the fact that you could order so much and share and just in case you didn't like it, it was small, but I loved everything I ordered!! Again, if my stomach had more room, I would have had so much more, but it gives me a reason to come back again and again to hopefully try the whole menu. The prices were reasonable too. So awesome!! Great laidback atmosphere with the menu being mostly small plates. There are a couple larger plates for 3+ people to share as well. Can be a little loud due to high ceilings but over all a great place to share a meal with friends or a date. Flavors are all well balanced and the service was great!

This is my third time, and my wife’s and my second time in the last year. Fantastic restaurant with a great atmosphere, and so many delicious options. Today we celebrated our seventh anniversary, and our waiter even threw in a little something special, which we really appreciated! While we didn’t get it this time, I think the best dessert is the apple pie. We also really liked the pork belly, but you really can’t go wrong with anything… Except for the chicken croquettes, that one we did not like ha.

First visit here, loved the decor and vibe. Each dish was truly great, high quality ingredients and expertly prepared. We had the roasted beets salad, little neck clams with jamon and boiled peanuts (somehow this works), the jamon croquettes - out of this world, potatoes bravas and the pulpo (our favorite but not pictured). Only 2 comments: 1) I wish the potatoes did not have the tomato sauce smothered on top (side dish is better) else they get soggy, which defeats the purpose of deep frying them in the first place, and 2) I would recommend a bit more spice / heat on the clams..smoked paprika or cayenne or something. Our server was very pleasant, attentive and joyful. We will be back!

great place to grab drinks and dine with friends! we got here about 15 minutes after opening and it was already packed. a true sentiment to how great the place is! their burgers are really good and was the most popular choice amongst our group. my next favorite would be their fried oysters. everything we ordered did not disappoint! their drinks were very yummy too! the service was super friendly and attentive. i will definitely be coming back for more and i recommend everyone to give this spot a try.

I've been here while visiting my friend twice now and I enjoy everything I get each time! I especially LOVE the deviled eggs. Our waitress was very nice, helpful and attentive to us. My only negative review is how dark it is inside. I couldn't see at first, eventually got used to the light, but then the table next to me started flashing their phone lights and blinding me loll aside from that 10/10 would recommend for a more fine dining experience!

Great place for both food and drinks. Had an amazing burger but the drink specials were to die for. Probably the most fun part was order drinks using the dealer choice option. Great little bar and restaurant. Best burgers in town. They don't take reservations though ,so you never know if you can get seated right away or not. It's very popular, so... Also, very noisy. You definitely have to raise your voice to carry a conversation here.

Ate here early on a Monday evening and food and service were superb! The burger is the best tasting in town. Not the biggest, but definitely the tastiest. The cocktails were lovely and the service was prompt and friendly. We will be back.

I felt like this place hit on all levels: super cool layout and space (both bar and restaurant), excellent atmosphere (I loved that it drew a totally diverse crowd of ages and people), and excellent food on top. We had their famous Burger, their 6 week-ish rotating Pasta dish, but the real winner of the night were the Oysters. Just incredible. A random new friend that was sitting at the bar said he is an expert on them and that they were the best around. Then immediately another random person at the bar chimed in and said he totally agreed. They tasted like they were right! For context on Burger/Pasta I'd say not Top Burger in area but Top Ten, and w Pasta it was Pesto Ling w Blckn Shrimp, and was good, but have heard their spaghetti and meatballs was the best in its time.

4.5 🌟 Nice dimly lit spot that with good food and drinks. Got lucky and was seated at the round corner booth. I loved the raspberry mint shrub club drink; a carbonated bev with assorted fruit juice. New American restaurant
Littler is a cozy New American restaurant known for its seasonal dishes and carefully curated wine and cocktail selection. The intimate space exudes a romantic ambiance with warm lighting, wood-paneled bar, and friendly waitstaff. Chef Gray Brooks showcases his expertise in vegetable-based dishes like roasted carrots with harissa and labneh, as well as the popular spoon bread served with shrimp and nduja.
My wife and I visited Littler before a theater show at the Durham Performing Arts Center. The restaurant is a short, 5 to 10 minute walk to the DPAC. It's a small, cozy, and modern restaurant with simple decorations abound. We started with the Sweet Potato field starter. Wow, it was delicious. Make sure to get the sourdough bread for dipping into the olive oil with this dish. For entrees, I selected the seared scallops, and my wife had the sea bass. Both were wonderful and light. Flavors were magnificent as we shared our choices with each other. For dessert, we couldn't decide, so we got two; the chocolate chiffon cake, and yuzu & lemon posset. The chocolate mousse was about twice the size of the posset and a heavier, more filling dessert. The restaurant had wonderfully decorated restrooms with lighted candles and a modest selection of wines and cocktails. I would recommend having reservations since the establishment is small. Also, they do include a 20% gratuity on all orders, so be mindful when tipping since the final price includes the tip. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and plan to return in the future when we're back in Durham.
Charles C — Google review
The food was excellent, the service was great, and the atmosphere was just right. What I did not like is that we spent $60 a person with half of the people not getting drinks and no desserts and then when we left we went across the street to a pub because everyone was still hungry and ordered food at the pub. I also did not like that they could not handle five people. They squished thee people on the bench and put two place settings on a spot for one place setting. There were plenty of empty tables, but they decided to squeeze us instead. We also ordered the bread, and there were only four slices, and they had no option for five people other than ordering a second round of four slices. The place seems to be designed for couples or a pair of couples. At the end of the day, the party of five all agreed that the food was exceptional and the staff was great, but we would not return because of the reasons listed in this post. If you want to spend lots of money and have a romantic time, then you should go. The food is worth it. If you are hungry, go across the street.
Allan R — Google review
Littler is a true gem for food enthusiasts. From the first bite to the last, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The sweet potato and mushroom dishes were comforting and flavorful, setting the stage for the seafood extravaganza that followed. The sea bass and scallops were cooked to perfection, tender and succulent. The olive cake was a surprising delight, a unique and delicious addition to the meal. The dessert was equally impressive. The beet sorbet was a refreshing and unexpected flavor combination. To top it all off, the coffee and espresso martinis were the perfect way to end the meal. And let's not forget the mercy of the bartender drinks, which added a touch of whimsy and creativity to the evening. Joe, the bartender, was fantastic, crafting delicious cocktails that perfectly complemented the meal. If you're looking for a memorable dining experience, Littler is the place to go.

We went here as the first stop on our mini-moon and I don’t have enough good things to say! I was able to work with them to surprise my wife with by having a glass of her favorite wine ready when we got to the table, and the food was absolutely outstanding! The oysters were fresh and buttery, and the sourdough was perfect. We got the gnocchi with scallops and the short rib for our mains—both blew us away. The desserts and cocktails were great too! We will definitely be back!

I hosted a work dinner here for a small group and I was not disappointed! Everything we got was delicious but I specifically recommend the Carrot Cavatelli! It’s too bad that they are closing down. I am not sure why but I would definitely recommend stopping in before they close.

Grabbed dinner at Littler before seeing a show at DPAC. The restaurant is very small but comfortable. They play music from a turntable and reel to reel cassettes - nice touch. The menu is limited but has something for everyone. We had the bread which was spelt and sourdough - pricey for what you get but excellent. Our table also ordered the tomato tart, carrot cavatelli, short ribs, chocolate mousse and yuzu and lemon posset. Everything was delicious although I think the small plates are a bit expensive for the serving. Although I say the prices are a bit higher than I would like the food is very good and we will be back.

Honestly was shocked by my experience here. 1. the place is usually packed and understandably so it's cozy and cute so reservations are needed 2. we ordered three dishes a. the tartar good start. b. the egg custard soup ? texture was odd but flavor was ok ..but wont order again c. the scallops... 3 of the 4 we tasted had a lot of sand. SAND the primary reason behind my one star. to clean scallops simply rinse them..I didn't feel clean to eat anything else after that. and expressed my discomfort. 3. we were comped for the scallops only . 4. we left to eat elsewhere

Delicious sandwiches served up in this swanky, upscale gift shop. They don't skimp on the sandwich fillings, either. Very bright and has plenty of outdoor seating as well as indoor seating.

the best sandwiches in the triangle, hands down. I love no. 11 (egg salad) and no. 22 (turkey and havarti - pictured). they are absolute whoppers and always so fresh and so tasty. the staff are all very lovely and even during the lunch rush the sandwiches are quick to come out.

My wife and I love this place. We bring out of town guests here for the relaxed atmosphere. The food is easy going but done right. We ask for lightly toasted on toasted sandwiches as occasionally they get carried away with the toasting. Watch out for the birds they are waiting for you to turn your head and they are brave. Overall a wonderful place to eat and enjoy downtown Durham.

Cute little sandwich and gift shop. Employees are friendly. The food is great, I like everything I've tried so far and there are a couple of vegetarian options. Gift shop has a variety of knick-knacks, books, and food stuffs. It's all a bit expensive, but I'm sure you could find something for anyone.

Downtown Durham loves itself a gift store with grocery items. I really wish it was the other way around: A small grocer or bodega with some gift items. Not sure how the plethora of gift stores are more financially sustainable than a small grocery store. How many times have I bought something from Parker and Otis? Probably four times and it never was a scented candle or a quirky cookbook. How many times have I wished for a small grocery that's a quick stroll near my apartment — one of probably 1,000 new apartments clustered close by? Every. Single. Day. People seem to always be scratching their heads about how to make businesses thrive in downtown Durham when there's 80 places to get beer/cocktails and nowhere to get basic food staples. (Bulldega is not conveniently located for all the new construction/apartments.) The going logic is that people want to drive to one of the big box stores for groceries to save $ — while being in complete denial of the constant headaches from terrible drivers and constant traffic jams from car accidents. People pay downtown prices for downtown convenience —  and not only for bars and yoga classes. There's always a steady trickle of people on foot who I am sure, would pay for an overpriced kombucha, bag of chips, or a gallon of milk if they could run out of their apartment and be back in 5-10 minutes.

It has been years since I went and this was the first time at their new location. I guess it's fine for those who want to just shop or grab and go. However our group was looking forward to sitting and enjoying our meal together similar to how it was in the old place. Seating is very limited , also while familiar entrees remain, you no longer get the included side options. Also they no longer have the gingerbread type cookies from years ago. I guess that piece of nostalgia is gone.
Rhonda K — Google review
This is the first time I have visited Parker and Otis since they moved from the brightleaf area in Durham to the tobacco campus. I was a little disappointed because the restaurant now seems to only offer a shallow lunch menu rather than more of a variety including breakfast food. I did get a sandwich and had the roast beef on wheat/sourdough with cheese. The sandwich was good and I did enjoy it, but $12 for a sandwich could have got me much more of a meal at other restaurants. Their gift shop is well stocked. There is no indoor seating at the current time, but they seem to be working on a very small area for indoor seating. If you've ever visited the old Parker and otis, this one is definitely not what it used to be.

Italian restaurant
Restaurant
Gocciolina is a charming Italian restaurant located in a strip mall in Durham, North Carolina. Despite its unassuming location, the cozy and inviting ambiance of the dining room immediately sets the stage for a delightful culinary experience. The restaurant is renowned for its delectable Italian dishes, with a particular emphasis on pasta and small plates. The menu features an array of traditional flavors and seasonal ingredients sourced locally to create authentic and mouthwatering offerings.
We have visited twice now. Once for Valentine's a few years ago and recently for our 8th wedding anniversary. There is a menu, but it is limited because they create the menu that is on the chalkboard. Everything has been delicious that we have tried. This time around, the cheapest bottle of wine was $46. The last time, there was a Montepulciano for $28. The Puglia we got was very good and paired well with our food. You can't go wrong with their Burrata to start. I always get pasta because I want pasta when I go for Italian. Therefore, I got the eggplant and roasted red pepper ravioli and sautéed swiss chard and garlic. 4 huge homemade ravioli and the chard was perfectly cooked and not mushy. Husband got the yellow fin tuna medium rare with cucumber and onion salad and brussel sprouts. The sprouts were charred with a good mix of spices and salt. The tuna was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. We finished with the chocolate torte, ice cream (can't remember the name) and I had an espresso martini. Rich and chocolatey! Rhe martini was perfect - nit too sweet, good espresso/vodka mixed flavor. We did spend ~$200 with tip,, but that's not terrible for all we had and an anniversary. Make a reservation and go!

This summer I visited 15 states on vacation. This place is the best I've seen in my trip. The food is delicious. The interior is unique, I wanted to look at every corner - paintings, statuettes, various interior items like in a museum. Everything is very impressive. Unfortunately, the photos cannot convey how warm and friendly the atmosphere is here. When guests leave, they hug the waiters, it's so touching. I will remember this restaurant and at the first opportunity, I will definitely come here again. ❤️

We had such a memorable first meal at Gocciolina! We had a reservation with our two kids and were ushered in immediately. The server, Justin, was especially accommodating to the kid's needs and very knowledgeable. The daily specials all look amazing and it's great knowing there will always be something new to try. The pastas we ordered were cooked perfectly. The fried eggplant appetizer was the best eggplant we've ever had. They generously offered us extra bread and fresh Parmesan with balsamic vinegar from a new wheel they had just opened at no cost. For dessert, we ordered the olive oil cake and blueberry-blackberry sorbet, both of which were stunning. The overall service and experience were excellent. We will definitely be coming back regularly!

My bff and I have both been Gocciolina separately and we decided to make it a girls night and go together. We scheduled a reservation because we were both aware of how things fill up. When we first arrived we were greeted by the host who was very kind. Originally we thought one person who we thought was our server but later met Justin. Justin was matter of fact and basically there todo his job. He was not overly chatty and straight to the point. My friend and I were looking for a bottle of their Lambrusco and while they did not sell it by the glass we decided to move forward with the bottle. We ordered the oyster (beware they don't come in a shell) but they are packed with flavor. We also ordered the Bolognese and the steak. The Bolognese was solid and the stick was delicious. We ended up sharing everything. The bathroom was really clean and the parking lot has plenty of parking. It is such a cute little restaurant, very unassuming and truly a solid Italian place. Would definitely go back.

The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. I went there thinking I was going to order the spinach and cheese ravioli but apparently the menu gets updated daily. The ravioli they had on menu came witj pork I believe so I asked if I could get the ravioli without it. They were able to accommodate me and instead did a cheese ravioli in a red sauce with parmesean cheese I believe. The ravioli is made in house and was delicious. An added plus is the waitress asked about any food allergies or dietary restrictions before anything. I wish more restaurants would do this. Overall great experience.

Cozy, informal and buzzing with positive energy were my first impressions upon entering Gocciolina. Enjoyed taking in the custom crafted menu featuring farm to table ingredients. I was drawn towards the handmade ravioli special and was very pleased. Starters and sides were all excellent. Best discovery of the night was the bottled cider, dry, fresh tasting and an excellent pairing with the olives. I also recommend the whiskey sour cocktail. Desserts were amazing. Look forward to the next time.

South American restaurant
Luna Rotisserie and Empanadas is a stylish restaurant located on Main Street, offering a fusion of South American and American Southern cuisine. The menu features traditional Latin American dishes made with authentic ingredients, such as patacon pisao and Colombian arepas, alongside nods to Southern favorites like spicy bacon collards and pimento hominy "mac" and cheese.
Delicious chicken with super friendly staff. Loved their Peruvian chicken and pulled chicken. The drinks were meh, but the bartender had fantastic customer service. It is a small restaurant, so it was packed but managed to feel cozy instead of cramped.
Kay — Google review
This time up on the plate was Luna's Restaurant. Highlighted by their sensational Peruvian chicken, "Pollo a la Brasa." This wasn't just any rotisserie chicken; it was a masterclass in flavor—perfectly marinated, incredibly juicy with a delightful smoky char, and wonderfully crisp skin. The accompanying sides of Spicy bacon collards and Black bean coconut rice were inspired choices, and the vibrant Aji Verde and zesty Aji Amarillo sauces elevated every bite to a new level of culinary enjoyment. Don't miss the chance to try one of their expertly crafted Strawberry or Mango Mojitos from the bar. Luna's offers ample indoor and bar seating, along with charming sidewalk options, all within a short walk of public parking. Whether you're seeking a cozy date night or a lively family dinner, Luna's provides an excellent dining experience. Definitely on the next date night out in Durham. Great Job Luna’s

Do NOT sleep on pass up on this hidden gem, tucked in on West Main Street, downtown Durham. Mauro takes the best care of customers seated at the bar, listens to them and makes some of the best recommendations for both dining and drinks. The food is absolutely delicious and plated like it’s a Michelin Star restaurant. The drinks are perfectly crafted and hit the spot. This is a spot where we’ll be sure to pop into anytime we’re in town.

This is exactly the empanada I’ve always wanted!!! I got a chicken and a vegetarian (Yukon gold) empanada with the garlic kale side and every single bite was delicious. We had a reservation, but I think we would have been fine without it. The inside is so cool and relaxing, plus our server, Noah, was super quick and friendly! We will definitely be back, would be a great place to bring out of town guests to explore Durham!
Laura M — Google review
I really enjoyed my meal at Luna's. They offer a very intriguing menu that crosses several types of Latin American cuisine. I ordered the chili-braised pulled brisket, which was cooked to perfection. I also adored the coconut rice and beans. The collard greens were good, but lacking in spice and instead had a very strong apple cider vinegar taste. My only disappointment was the pisco sour which tasted OK, but looked very unappealing. My sister also tried the sangria, which oddly had a ton of club soda in it. We came in on a Thursday evening for dinner, and the place wasn't too crowded. The tables aren't really well suited for groups larger than four, and the seating isn't the most comfortable. Although the service was good and fast, we did run into an issue with being overcharged via the QR code payment process.

The atmosphere is very soothing. Parking is hard since it is downtown Durham. The food is good with decent portions but there are better prices elsewhere.

I was exploring downtown Durham and looking for a lunch spot when I came across Luna. I tried two of their excellent cocktails and opted for the pork empanada with two sides. I chose the coconut beans and rice along with the kale slaw. Both were excellent and the rice was perfectly cooked.

I love this place very much! Been eating here since 2020 and I've never been disappointed.... I do hate the prices are so high.. But I will eat here when I want to splurge a little. I also hate when I only want a little something that if I want to order the kids meal, I cannot, unless I order a full entree which defeats the whole purpose. It wasn't always like this but for some reason, things have changed! I still love it. I just don't go here as much!

Federal is a cozy neighborhood bar known for its abundant beer list, including 14 microbrews, and updated pub grub. The menu features internationally inspired dishes like beer braised bratwurst and pork carnitas, as well as some of the best burgers in town. The Fed Burger and black bean burger are popular choices. This spot is also a favorite among sports fans with multiple TVs broadcasting major games.
One of our new favorite spots. We started off with Federal Fries, and a Federal Burger. Someone in our party got chicken wings and loved them. We also got the large pretzel with cheese and buffalo chicken dip. We will definitely go again and we look forward to sitting outside. I told myself I wasn't going to put this part in, but it happened. You have a 50/50 chance of getting the nice Waiter. One was nice and the other was........ Not as nice. Please take my sense of humor and go try it for yourself. The food was really great. And even the bad service was not that bad. Just not as good as the other guy. And I'm sorry I don't know the other guy's name. But thank you for being good. We will definitely come back and we will probably be too scared to say anything next time also. All for fun, thank you.

Stopped by the Federal for lunch. We started with the deviled eggs. They were really good, but a bit salty. We got the Italian beef, the Steak salad, and the fried cheese curds. Everything was delicious, but just a little heavy on the salt. The steak salad was HUGE! I loved it and it definitely cane with a good amount of steak. The atmosphere is pretty chill. The Federal is a a small bar with a big foodie thing going on. We would come back for sure.

We visited Federal in downtown Durham during Oktoberfest, and it was an amazing experience! They had a special Oktoberfest menu that really set the mood with German-inspired dishes and festive brews. We loved the bratwurst plate, which was perfectly seasoned and served with sauerkraut and a pretzel. The atmosphere was cozy and lively, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable about both the regular and special menus. Whether you’re looking for a great spot to celebrate an event like Oktoberfest or just want a casual yet delicious meal, Federal is a fantastic choice. We’ll definitely be back!

The Federal has the best nachos in the RTP, easily. The incredibly tender steak, well seasoned and cooked to perfection, the generous proportions of cheese and toppings, it's just too good not to recommend.

Enjoyed a late lunch after getting to Durham. Plenty of seats and great bartender/server that was attentive. We started with pimento deviled eggs. They were slightly spicy and full of flavor. The tuna tostadas were large and packed with tuna and slaw. The aoili on top was a perfect pairing. The Federal burger was cooked perfectly to order and was super juicy. The fries were an enormous amount and crispy. Definitely worth a stop when in town.

Had a great experience with almost 20 guests in the beer garden area. Easy to order with the QR codes on every table. Dog friendly inside and out. Go with the standard bar fare and you won’t be disappointed. Griffin and Vivienne teamed up to provide excellent, friendly service. Highly recommend!

Restaurant
Alley Twenty Six is a chic and elegant cocktail bar that offers a diverse menu featuring charcuterie and contemporary American cuisine. The bar takes pride in its innovative non-alcoholic cocktails, which are regularly updated to reflect seasonal ingredients. Owner Shannon Healy and the bartenders host experimental sessions to craft new syrups, tinctures, and unique non-alcoholic beverages with the same level of creativity as their alcoholic counterparts.
Family in town with their dog meant finding restaurants with outdoor spaces, which Alley Twenty Six provides. Amazing staff took care of all four of us (three humans plus dawg), bringing Hank a bowl of water AND treats! Our food was amazing, starting with devilled eggs (slightly too spicy for us wimps but great flavor) and pimiento cheese with fried saltines and pepper jelly. WOW was that latter a success! The cheese was fabulous but the jelly lifted it to another level! Brother and I both had the spring vegetable risotto with asparagus, green peas, mushrooms, and other veg. Perfect sized portion we completely devoured. SIL liked her chicken wings but said they could do with less sauce. Very happy to discover this charming place -- will be coming back!
Anne M — Google review
We really did eat in the alley. It might not be the largest menu, but it has a whole bunch of interesting things on it. In fact, my partner and I could not decide what to get so we got a whole bunch of dishes and shared them it is up there on one of the best burgers I’ve had in recent history. My partner really enjoyed the pork belly with kimchi and the deviled eggs are tasty. They make their own tonic and we had some gin and tonics. It was a fun overall experience.
Marci F — Google review
Atmosphere and staff are nice, very knowledgeable and skilled and attentive. Everything is definitely on the expensive side. Drinks and custom cocktails are around $15-20. We got the Mexican Herbalist and the Alley Cocktail both were very strong. The Alley Cocktail was a little overpowered with the whiskey flavor. We also got the fried chicken biscuit they made for the Biscuits and Banjos music festival. It was a sweet cornmeal biscuit in goat fat but it was a bit burnt, mild but nice fried crunchy chicken piece, and some tasty collard greens which could have been added in a higher quantity for its flavor profile. ******I noticed our biscuit chicken piece was half the size of the other customers, which I did not appreciate for paying $16 for it.
Neha P — Google review
We had such a great dining experience at Alley 26! The atmosphere is vibrant yet relaxed, with the brick-lined alleyway, string lights, and colorful flags making it feel cozy and special. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over a meal and enjoy both the food and the company. Food & Drinks: The cucumber and onion salad was light, tangy, and refreshing, a perfect starter. Both burgers were excellent: one topped with a fried egg and arugula, the other with bacon and melty cheese. The fries were crisp, golden, and seasoned just right. The crab dip with wonton chips was indulgent and flavorful, with the chips fried to a perfect crunch. And the key lime pie was the star of dessert—tart, creamy, and beautifully presented with whipped cream and lime zest. Service: The service was attentive without being overbearing. Everything came out fresh and nicely timed, and the staff made us feel welcome and unrushed. Overall: Alley 26 is more than just a cocktail bar—it’s a gem for a full dining experience. Whether you’re stopping by for drinks and small plates or settling in for a full meal and dessert, it delivers on quality and atmosphere. Highly recommend for a night out in Durham. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Fantastic burger- and every single appetizer was an absolute treat. Immensely high quality ingredients and inventive combinations and recipe make for an overall innovative and tasty dining experience. Good portion sizes and not too pricey for the quality and quantity of food you get.

I can't believe that I never put a proper review. Food is excellent. It's gotten better and better over the years. The staff is well-trained and excellent. The "small plates" can be combined to make a very nice shareable "tapasesque" experience. The bartenders are out of this world. They have excellent entrees, but for around $15 per small plate, you can really experience the breadth of their menu and the talent of the chef. I asked for an iteresting take on an Old Fashioned one time and the Bartender pulled out one that was unique and something that I had never had before. If you look at my reviews, you can see that I have happily enjoyed cocktails around the world. I recently got back from Napa at an absolute 5 star resort with exceptional service and bartenders. And they were excellent. Absolutely perfect. Alley Twenty Six is better than that. Which seems impossible, but they do it. Every Time. From the hosts to the waiters, to the bartenders, to the runners. Every experience has been exceptional. There are great choices in Durham. Try them all, but start here would be my recommendation.

Ponysaurus Brewing Co., established in 2015, prides itself on its innovative approach to crafting beers with traditional European styles and a twist of modern flavors. The brewery offers a diverse range of well-crafted beers, from classic ales and stouts to more adventurous saisons, sours, and wits. Visitors can enjoy these brews at the taproom, beer garden, or patio, or take them home from various stores across North Carolina.
This brewery had 16 beers to choose from. I had a flight of 5 beers and all were excellent. They have a great garden area outside and some inside seating. They also had pizza. The restrooms were clean.

Pizza and beer? What more could you want. Tried a wide variety of beers. The cherry sour , IPA, Pilsner, Kolsch all were great. Also how can you not love a motto of “don’t be mean to people”?

Craft Brewery serving great beers and a cozy-feel outdoor seating area, featuring fire pits, wood benches and string lights. There is a wide range of great beers to choose from - the saison was a particular highlight. Tasty food was also a available from an ajoing pizza restaurant. As it was the run up to Halloween, the brewery was showing horror movies in the evening on a big projector, which was a nice touch. Overall a great place to visit if you enjoy your beer!

Beer is good, but not good enough nor cheap enough to beat out other joints in Durham. We came for someone's birthday because of the fire pits, bar was pretty full, and we were told by the bartenders "We can't light another fire because of low sales." While writing this review, they added multiple logs to the other fire pit, which was already lit. We brought 20 people, all in for multiple drinks, I think we can cover the cost of a couple logs. You want low sales? Give people reasons not to want to return your brewery. Edit: As pointed out by the brewery's response, the bartenders were told no fire because of "low sails" over the pit. Unfortunately, they told our group and another that there was no fire because of "low sales." Adding two stars for legitimate reason, but keeping off full 5 for failure to communicate by staff and for the horrible parking lot out front. Needs to be made/clearly marked as a one-way lot.

First time coming to this place and it was on point! The pizza was so good and reminded me of a classic stone oven New York pizza. Their beer selection had a nice variety of different taste for your palate preference. Defiantly would recommend going if you have never been before!

Solid beer, super fun atmosphere. True to form, we tried both IPA options, a west coast and white style, and really enjoyed both. In my commitment to leave my IPA comfort zone, we tried a flight with zero IPA representation (rye pale ale, mango wit, Belgian blonde, Pilsner). Standouts were the Mango Wit and Belgian Blonde. Also, the flight setup was super cute/fun/interesting/different (choose your adjective). All of the seating is outside, with a tiered patio/deck, making it a great spot to enjoy on a beautiful day. Covered seating on the patio/deck is heated, so don’t let the cold months keep you inside! There’s lots of space, so it’s a great spot for groups. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, which we love from a brewery - no pretension here! We didn’t order the pizza, but took a peek at other tables and it looked and smelled amazing. If logos are your thing, Ponysaurus has a great logo. Kudos on branding. PLUS: parking. We love to see it.

Great beer, awesome location, good vibe, and friendly people. Absolutely loved eating my cesar salad as little lettuce boats, and the pizza was delicious! As far as the beer goes, we tried the brown, the IPA, session IPA, and the scotch ale. All were so good we decided to get the saison to go without even having a pint first.

Oh my goodness. We just popped in to grab a beer. Then there was a cool shirt, then to-go beers… Enter Mike. Mike is WONDERFUL. Mike has said it’s his first night behind the bar, but if Mike is not teasing me, he might be the most competent and kind human on Earth. First he complimented my husband’s hoodie and let us ramble on about Odesza. Then he made sure we liked the drinks we had just ordered. Then he found the shirt i horribly described. I’m in the service industry- not anyone would have infinite patience. When we then asked about grabbing a 4 pack to go, he made sure we would like it and got us samples! We wish there was pizza still, but Mike let us down easy. (It’s our fault. Mike did not say this. Mike might have suggested it was the pizza’s fault. Pizza, I love you anyway. Mike, you too.) Mike is the best. Mike might be a witch. All hail Mike!

M Kokko is a cozy and stylish eatery that specializes in Korean-inspired chicken dishes, such as wings, noodles, rice dishes, and gyoza. As the sister restaurant to M Sushi, it offers a limited but carefully curated menu of Chef Mike Lee's favorite Korean comfort foods. One of its highlights is the delectable ramen that has been designed not to overlap with the offerings at nearby Dashi.
Friendly staff and really good food! We got the Korean Fried Chicken (soy garlic!), Jia Jiang Noodles which were super good, and the Biang Biang Noodles. Also got the chocolate tart, which we really liked. Limited seating, so small parties (1-4 people) are best. Tucked behind M sushi.

If you’re looking for a meal that’ll make you wish you could eat the same thing every day, M Kokko is the place to be. We went with three people, and, as soon as the dishes hit the table, we were completely blown away. The menu is perfectly curated (thankfully, not overwhelming), and honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on it. We kicked things off with the Nashville hot chicken wings, which packed a punch but were perfectly crispy, followed by the pork belly bao—oh my—it was so tender and flavorful, it practically melted in your mouth. The beef noodles? Unfortunately, we got so caught up in devouring them, we forgot to take a picture, but let me just say they were divine. Tender beef, savory broth, and noodles that soaked up all the goodness—you can’t leave without trying them. We washed it all down with some sake and a beer, but at this point, we were eating so fast and in such bliss that we were already planning our next trip before we even finished our meal. The service was also top-notch, which only made the experience that much better. If you’re in Durham, you need to make M Kokko a priority. Trust me, it’s worth every bite. We’ll definitely be back.

I wish I loved it more because we drove an hour just to try this place. The pork and toppings on the ramen was very good but the broth was insanely salty. I thought it was just my bowl but every bowl in our group was the same. Jjajiang was also very very salty. Only good dish was the fried chicken.
L H — Google review
I really love these "M" restaurants. The concept of small plate cooking is something fantastic. The chef gets to focus on very minimal dishes and they make sure those dishes are perfect. The lower rating is purely because of the small cramped up place. No way to make reservations ... waitlist is on an iPad. Now we don't mind that kind of an experience but that's usually at a fast food kind of a place with Fast food kinda prices. Please don't misunderstand, this is a fantastic place to have dinner. Great food with simple ambiance.

I only leave reviews when I think it's worth it, and M Kokko was worth every cent. I'm from Philadelphia, and M Kokko is the first place I've tried in RDU that matches the authenticity, flavor, and style of Korean and Asian inspired cuisine back home. My waitress, Ness, was kind and attentive, and felt like I was talking to a friend. Everyone there was really chill and down to earth. I'll definitely be back, especially for the banh mi and ramen.

One of the affordable M series restaurants with excellent food. We had the Hainan chicken and Biangbiang noodles, both of which were outstanding. Service is good.

Their ramen is the best in town, no ifs or buts about it, and all the food is delicious. And after I developed a soy and dairy allergy (long story), they’ve been incredibly lovely in accommodating it and making the dish work just as well, even though it required replacing a number of ingredients. Servers are always lovely and helpful. We come here a ton and after how they’ve handled the allergy, I’m a loyal costumer for life.

Sandwich shop
Fast food restaurant
King's Sandwich Shop is a legendary walk-up burger stand in Durham, serving up mouthwatering sandwiches, hot dogs, and hand-dipped milkshakes since 1942. It has become a go-to spot for locals seeking comforting, stress-relieving food. The menu features famous griddled burgers with King's sauce, all-dressed hot dogs, and piping hot crinkle-cut fries.
Oh my days! I was headed to a brewery/burgee spot in Durham when Kings popped up on my map and the kid said he would rather try their burger. Thanks kid! Walk up counter style burger. You cannot beat the the value of this burger in Durham. HUGE patty, thick melty cheese, plenty of toppings. Single burger of this size for under $10 is hard to find these days. (Great for hungry kids) Next time I'll try the Philly. All they need is BEER! If you're a burger hound, this is a must stop

Overrated. Simple food, terrible service. Ordered two burgers, hot dog, and fries. There were only a handful of other customers and after I waited for 20 minutes and watched people who came after me get their food, I finally got a staff member to acknowledge they forgot about my order and had to re-do it. Took another 15 minutes and additional reminders to get my food while staff sat around and did nothing. They advertise shakes on the building and their Google Maps posting, yet they don't do shakes anymore. Definitely false advertising. If you want a great shake, stop by The Milkshake Factory instead down the street at the American Tobacco Campus.

Awesome food today. Price was about $18 which I thought was high INITIALLY. But when my food came and I had a box of fries covered with fixings and a huge piece of chicken on my sandwich it immediately was justified. Food was very tasty. Will be back!!

I came here because someone told me it was the best burger in NC. I can't go as far as to say that but it was a pretty perfect Burger. Big and the ingredients taste great. The meat is well seasoned. The burger is juicy. The house sauce taste great. The fries are firm and well seasoned. I have nothing negative to say. I'll have to come back and try the Phillysteak. 10/10 would reccomend. Definitely the best burger in Durham at least.

King’s was a great experience. They get thru the busy line of lunch goers pretty quickly. But if you decide to come during lunch, expect a decent crowd. The menu has the spectrum of grill foods- though when I went they didn’t have some items in stock (Pulled pork sandwich). It didn’t bother me as the server recommended a host of other items. I settled for the Philly cheese steak with some onion rings on the side, my wife opting for a single patty burger and tater tots. Both were really good. I was impressed by the tots being so crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The onion rings are the battered versions, they are smooth on the outside and have a great crunch, the onion also doesn’t get pulled out which means it’s not over cooked. Burger and Philly cheese steak tasted good, nothing special to note but it hit the spot! They had a picnic table area to eat, it might be limited during lunch due to the number of people but maybe you can ask to split the bench.
Justin L — Google review
I was so excited to hear that they had vegetarian options because ya girl likes to eat. I ordered the Veggie Philly with a side of onion rings. I will say, I am also tired of having to pay extra for veggie options when the regular meat options are ways cheaper, but I digress. I feel for the amount I paid for the onion rings and what I got did not match, but the sandwich was GOODT, OKAY! It was very tasty. The bread was soft, the veggies were flavorful, and make sure to ask for the spicy mustard I added that to mine (it's not spicy at all). Now, I was expecting them to have a thin sliced veggie alternative but honestly, I think they just broke up a beyond patty and put it in a bun. I also asked before ordering did the veggie come with everything that the regular one did and it didn’t. The cheese was different from mine. All in all I would definitely go back and recommend that you check it out.
Alexis L — Google review
ALWAYS great food, people, and service. Burgers are always juicy, onions and jalapeños always seem to be super fresh. Fries are great, the hot dogs you can't go wrong with, and the hidden gems like the Philly are something you'd want to make sure you get!

Been to this place twice and ordered the chicken Philly. You can't really beat the price in this area. The food was quite good and the employees were kind. If your looking for a decent bite to eat, don't pass this up.

Rose's Noodles, Dumplings and Sweets offers a diverse menu of East Asian-inspired dishes and desserts that change with the seasons. The restaurant benefits from the culinary talent drawn to the area by its universities. Since opening in 2013, it has become known for its house-made noodles and dumplings, as well as other offerings like caramel-braised belffish with clay pot rice, Japanese katsu sando, and sake butter-sauteed NC squid.
delicious! they say all their ingredients are locally sourced and you can tell. small menu but everything was AMAZING. limited seating so go early or make a reservation. we got seated right away at 5pm on a Friday but it was packed soon after

This is a very unique place! The bakery is the highlight, their pastries and cakes are amazing. I especially loved the cinnamon carrot cake cheesecake and the passion fruit tres leches. I wasn’t as impressed with the savory foods here. The spring rolls were mostly filled with rice noodles, and the sandwich was good but overpriced and lacked structural integrity. Menu and baked goods seem to be constantly changing so it’s hard to know what you’ll get when you go, which is hard if you find a favorite dish that then disappears or prefer planning your meal, or it can be good if you like a surprise and variation and adventure. Staff are super nice.

Found this place while visiting Durham. There were no bad bites. Every bite was delicious. The food is good I would eat it again. I would recommend this spot to others. The desserts are an absolute must have.
Sharday M — Google review
Absolutely masterful. I don't know what these low reviews are about. I've been about three times now since April and each time has been amazing. Appetizers, spot on. Main course, delicious. The pulled noodles are just beautiful. I don't know about their sandwiches.... I always get the noodles. Pork were the best so far. Desserts... I can't really put into words how good. It can often be very busy so a reservation is probably required and even then we often have to wait ten minutes. But for a deliciously spicy and unique meal this is the place. And the pieces are amazing for the food you get. We just buy so much of it that it's way too much for a standard meal
Ryan P — Google review
This place is a little weird. To start off, almost everything has pork, so you already know that limits the menu to less than a handful of options to choose from as someone who doesn’t eat pork. Secondly, a little overpriced for a semi self serve restaurant. My noodle bowl was $18. Thirdly, if I hadn’t paid attention, I wouldn’t have realized that they charge you 4% MANDATORY hidden fee to cover THEIR vacations, and THEIR 401k, and THEIR insurance. Let me help myself before helping others! When I asked what this automatic charge is, the cashier pointed at the little sign on the counter explaining why. Pretty disgusting if you ask me. This should not be a mandatory fee whatsoever, but an optional one. While the veggies noodles (one of the only thinks I can get on their menu) was okay, because of hidden behavior like this, I won’t be returning back.
Ron K — Google review
Rose's Noodles is a cute place on the outskirts of downtown Durham that offers its own twist on a ramen shop. When visiting around 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. The restaurant had a couple people sitting outside with a few tables full and an open counter on the inside. The atmosphere is very cute. Having a open kitchen with areas dedicated to making their own homemade sweets. It seemed promising but outside initial expectations things deviated. My partner and I both ordered one of the steamed buns which looked just as they do in any of the other photos that you find, but while tasteful, did not feel fresh made and was actually not hot at all. All. The insides were warmed but it's hard for me to confirm if these were "freshly steamed". I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and my partner ordered the The pork option belt noodles. The tonkotsu ramen was delicious and had savory flavors with tender meat, and well cooked noodles. For my partner, her belt noodles were good but it was hard to acknowledge and enjoy The taste of the ingredients due to them being doused and chili sauce. To the point where it was inedible. This is a shame because the noodles were definitely homemade and quite delicious but could not be enjoyed. This would have not been as bad if our service would have made up for it and provided adequate water for us to accompany the burn of the noodles. After being sat and given the initial bottle of water to share at the table, the only way I was able to get service from there on was to flag down our server. At one point another table got up and went outside with their water bottle to refill it at the water tank that is provided for the people that are sitting outside. The food was delivered by one of the chefs, at no point did our waiter check on us to see how we were doing and we also had to flag them down when you were ready for the check after having not eaten a bite of food for over 5 to 10 minutes. The server seemed more occupied with folding menus and stamping takeout boxes than tending to their tables. The last thing to comment on was that even though it was a very cute restaurant, it looks like that wiping down surface area is not a priority. As The ledge that the flowers were sitting on had not been wiped for a couple days the dust that had accumulated around it was not a pleasant sight. Please see image. In summary, it could have just been an off day + maybe our expectations of the food were not correctly aligned, but I accomplished two trips in one visit being my first and my last. If tempted to go back it may be due to trying the sweets as I have heard good things but this will be a takeout experience rather than a dine in.

Steak house
Restaurant
NanaSteak is a contemporary American steakhouse located near the Durham Performing Arts Center. The restaurant offers classic steakhouse dishes in a bright, two-level space with hardwood floors, a bar, and a patio. It's situated among other locally-owned restaurants and bars in the American Tobacco district, making it convenient for visitors to explore nearby dining options.
A beautiful experience at one of the finest in Durham. It's rare that I trust a restaurant with a "rare" order, but they delivered. Quite possibly the best steak I've ever had. The pork chop also gets five stars, but the real treat was the exceptional service from Grace.
Liz T — Google review
4.5 stars. Friendly service, and the food was very good. I wouldn't say it was special, but I'd go back and order a couple plates of the crispy pork ribs. The steaks were perfectly cooked, but a little under seasoned. The fruit crisp was very heavy on the crisp, and very very sweet. The brownie flavor was better balanced.
Michelle S — Google review
My wife and I had a wonderful anniversary dinner at NanaSteak on September 28th before the Raphael Saadiq concert, and it could not have been a better experience. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome and celebrated. The atmosphere was lively yet intimate, the perfect setting for a special evening. The food was outstanding, our steaks were cooked to perfection, flavorful, and tender. The sides and appetizers were just as memorable, beautifully prepared and well-portioned. The cocktail list had great options, and the wine pairing recommended by our server complemented our meal perfectly. What made the night even more special was the attentive service. The team went out of their way to acknowledge our anniversary, which added a thoughtful personal touch. We left full, happy, and ready to enjoy the concert with the best possible start to the evening. NanaSteak has truly become one of our go-to spots for special occasions, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for both exceptional food and a warm, memorable dining experience.

We went there for a special occasion. We made a reservation, but got there a little early. Fortunately, we got there at the right time. What was nice was how professional the host was. When we were seated, the menus went down, and water was poured within seconds of that. Just a nice detail. The server walked us through the menu. We had excellent cocktails and a salad to start. The prices are reasonable for what you get, but not cheap. The entrees we had were prime rib and the ribeye. They were well-prepared. We asked for the chef to choose the temp they preferred. Both were cooked perfectly. The ribeye had a smokey, sweet flavor that was special. This is the place to take someone for a special occasion. We mentioned that in the reservation. At the end of the night, spoons suddenly appeared on the table. Then the sorbet of the day showed up. Nice touch, but the server remembered that I have a lactose issue, thus the sorbet. This is what a classic high-end steakhouse should be.

Found this place in my travels and decided to give it a whirl. Let's talk about parking, you're going to have to park and walk to this place, parking is tough, be prepared. This is a wait to be seated kind of place with table service and you pay your server when done. The entire staff was extremely courteous and accommodating to us. They also have a great selection of Bourbon and many other types of alcohol here. I ordered a 14 oz. NY Strip that was AWESOME, super flavorful, moist, seared just right, super tender. Prime cut of meat as we were told up front and Nanna's delivered. Top shelf food here. The fries and Brussel sprouts were fried in duck fat grease and they had an awesome flavor as well. This place is pricey, but from the service to the food, it's worth visiting here and well worth the price. I highly recommend, 2 thumbs up.

Everything was great! Very convenient before a show at DPAC, they will even hold your leftovers! Thanks Hannah, great service. The young lady that seated us was also one of the friendliest people in the world. We both had the bib salad, yummy(no pic), entres were rosito with shrimp & country ham, prime rib, mac & cheese and an order of the most delicious rolls ever. Dessert was the apple crisp with ice-cream. I didn't eat all of mine (rosito) but ate a lot, I thought I might fall asleep during The Wiz but I didn't!

Went to NanaSteak prior to a show at DPAC. It was my anniversary, something I noted in the reservation. The anniversary was acknowledged by the hostess, and they brought us a free sorbet with a candle to celebrate. The food was great, I would say they prepared my steak perfectly. All in all with food and drink, the cost was reasonable for the food and atmosphere. Nikki was terrific, took care of us. If you are planning a nice night out and going to DPAC, you cannot go wrong. It was great, highly recommend.

QueenBurger has quickly become a beloved gem in Durham since its debut in July 2020, emerging as a creative response to the pandemic when the Kingfisher Cocktail Bar temporarily closed. This pop-up burger bar has garnered attention for its mouthwatering menu featuring double-patty smash burgers crafted from local grass-fed Baldwin Beef, complemented by griddled onions, NC Hoop Cheddar Cheese, Special Sauce, and pickles.
QueenBurger has been on my list for a while and I kept forgetting about it. Made it this evening before a DPAC show. The inside is small but a decent amount of seating even at the bar. There is a decent amount of outside seating, which we enjoyed. The menu is short, but it allows them to make those items really well. I got the PBJ burger... branch out. Surprisingly delicious with a hint of peanut butter flavor and good strawberry bacon jam. The fries like string fries - thin and cooked just at crunchy. The tater tots were good as well. Enjoyed the spicy seasoning as well. I willbe back to get a homemade ice cream sandwich. You should try it too.

Well flavored and seasoned smash burgers in a fun, clean, modern, atmosphere. Very fast and flavorful! The seasoned tots were amazing! Plenty of indoor seating. Wheelchair accessible, clean bathrooms with a changing table. Parking on the street is usually easy. Perfect stop before or after the Bulls game!

Update: The cheesy tater tots with the fires spice was delicious. The cheese is creamy and smooth and the perfect ratio of cheese and tater tots. The PBJ burger is absolutely amazing and delicious. The perfect blend of peanut butter and strawberry bacon jelly. The new strawberry passionfruit slushy margarita was so good and who created this drink is a god send. Branwen and Janiyah were helpful and friendly. I highly recommend Queen burger if you want to have an amazing smash burger. The Carolina Slaw burger is amazing. The chili and slaw are made in house and they are delicious! The fried pickles are thick and crispy and amazing. The spicy ranch sauce was also delicious and made in house. The staff are friendly.

Tried the melt ,fries and fried pickles Order took 30 min to make bit negative there The melt was delicious but had too much mayo in my opinion The fries are so thin and tasty Pickle chips are coined battered pickles. Good. Get soggy with time but tasty Will come back hopefully less wait time next time Indoor and outdoor seating

The atmosphere was amazing. I love the art around the place, and the music is a vibe too. The spicy Smashburger is what I had and it was absolutely fantastic. My whole table (5 people including me) got our food in less than 10 mins and were totally satisfied with the result of our meal. I don’t think I’ve had a burger this good in years. Definitely recommend this place if you want great service and great food.

Elmo's Diner is a quintessential American diner that captures the essence of comfort and community. With its cozy booths and welcoming atmosphere, it's the perfect spot for breakfast lovers since they serve it all day long. This locally owned gem has become a favorite among Duke students and Durham families, thanks to its friendly service and extensive menu that caters to everyone, including vegetarians.
I had a wonderful experience at Elmo's Diner! I tried the pancakes along with a plain omelette filled with turkey soy and American cheddar cheese, and I couldn't be happier with my choices. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious, perfectly sweetened and served hot. The omelette was cooked just right, with the turkey soy adding a nice savory flavor, complemented beautifully by the melted American cheddar. I also ordered the apple cinnamon on the side, which was a delightful touch—sweet and spiced, it paired perfectly with the pancakes. The diner has a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I highly recommend Elmo's Diner for a tasty breakfast or brunch!

An old school diner vibe which was cool but the food lacks flavor. Nothing we ate had any seasoning. The service was the best part of our meal. Our waiter was great and the hostess was super friendly. Great people, but I would not return here.

I’m a plant based eater. This place came up when I searched “vegan options near me” in google maps. By the way, that search is great when the party is part carnivore and part plant based (as ours was). Upon being seated (approximately 15 minutes, not bad for a Sunday morning), I looked through the menu and was concerned I wouldn’t have any food options. When the wait staff member arrived, I asked about vegan options. I was delighted when she said” let me go get the special menu.” The special menu was a regular menu but all the vegan options were highlighted in pink and veggie options highlighted in another color. WHAT AN AWESOME IDEA! The place really met the needs of our diverse group. I’m a really big fan of the wait staff introducing themselves. Sadly, that didn’t happen. Other than that, it was a great experience. Additional note, by the time we left at around 10:15 on a Sunday, the wait looked huge. The line was out the door and around the corner. Arrive early or be prepared to wait if it’s Sunday.

I was searching for best places to have breakfast & pancakes near Chapel Hill as it's my young daughter birthday. The experience was not good, she did not like her french toast, their special sweet potato pancake was below regular and nothing special about it, and the vegetarian omelet was below standard compared to other places we visited, the veggies were not cooked well and no spices or flavor, just plain taste. I would not for sure return to the restaurant again as our experience was far from expectation and there are other places in town that are much better and very close.

The meats are slow-cooked over hardwoods to create a rich and smoky flavor that has garnered high praise from patrons. The no-frills setting with outdoor tables adds to the authentic BBQ experience.
I had the turkey sandwich. It had a nice smoke flavor. The sauce was good. I will pleasantly surprised by the sides. They were just as good as the Sandwich. I didn't feel the BBQ was any different than other cities I visit. I would eat here again.

Overall Score: 6.9/10 – A busy BBQ spot with great value, smooth service, and a unique, casual atmosphere. The menu features some standout items and offers fair pricing across the board, making it a worthwhile stop for BBQ lovers. Atmosphere and Service: 6.7/10 – The place gets packed quickly, which makes parking tight, but the line moved smoothly. It’s a seat-yourself style setup with a laid-back BBQ vibe. Staff seemed friendly, and while the place was a little dirty in areas, it wasn’t too bad. Food came out on time, and the variety on the menu—including unexpected items like meatloaf—added character. Brisket Baked Potato: 7.1/10 – A strong dish with great value. The potato was large and generously topped with sour cream and tender brisket. Very filling and flavorful. Chicken: 6.4/10 – Served as a bone-in breast, this was a juicy and flavorful cut, cooked well. Mac n Cheese: 5.7/10 – A fair-priced and decent side. Nothing fancy, just a solid standard mac. Ribs: 7.6/10 – One of the highlights. Extremely tender with a bold, flavorful seasoning. The meat fell right off the bone and delivered on all expectations.

GREAT FOOD AWESOME SMOKED Q. Sean had the 2 meet combo and could not finish his melt in your mouth smoke brisket and pork ribs. Loved his sides of jack cheese creamed spinach and his collard greens. I had the 2 meat combo pork ribs that were falling off the bone awesome tasty and probably I could use enough adjectives to fully describe their extreme flavors. My second meat was smoked turkey and I had so much I could not eat all that 4 thick slices of moistness. I loved the hush puppy fingers that so good I could eat a bag full by themselves. My sides were that yummy jack cheese creamed spinach and deep fried okra. Both of had 1/2 iced teas. Service was excellent. Wish I lived closer to visit more often. I would recommend to anyone looking for a BBQ place for properly smoked tasty meats.
William C — Google review
To set the stage, I felt like North Carolina bbq, but I'm a newbie. I don't even know what a hush puppy is. I decided on this place due to the existing ratings. I picked the 3 meat combo so I could try the options. Ribs. Brisket. Chicken. Sides were creamed spinach and spicy pinto beans. I opted for the leg for the chicken. They cut the meat right in front of you, and brush with some sauce before playing on the tray. I loved the ribs. The brisket was tender and very good with some sauce. The chicken skin was good but I felt the meat itself was a texture I didn't like. I ate the skin. I really liked the creamed spinach, and the beans weren't spicy at first - a slight kick in the back end. And those hush puppies? I really really liked them. I don't normally go for sweetish things but... oh man. I had to get a takeout box.
John K — Google review
Been hearing about this place for years. First time eating here. Was somewhat disappointed. I’ve honestly ate better food at city barbecue. The spicy baked beans, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese were all NASTY. Not sure why they give you a whole onion with the brisket. The ribs were good. The banana pudding was okay.
Erika — Google review
I think I like the sides and the chili better than the main course. I think the barbecue could’ve had more flavor. I had the brisket. I tried my friends pork, and I thought I had a lot more flavor. They were out of quite a bit of items by the time we got there, no chicken The barbecue sauce really works just OK.

Great food, great beer great service. We bypassed the line as we only had 2 and sat at the window. Morel crotini was amazing and the deep fried pigs ear surprisingly tasty. Anchovies pizza was our favorite and the sweet fennel sausage a close second. Really good and an upscale pizza place with more pizza than just pizza. We loved it. Worth the wait and you know why there is a wait in the first place

Ali and Matt were excellent! The food was top notch. I sat in the back bar area and met three other very nice customers. Loved it, looking forward to returning!

Our server was not very pleasant, she had an attitude and seemed a little racist. I didn’t get her name but she had dirty blonde hair and bangs. We waited more than 10 mins for her to even greet us. But when they sat an older white couple beside us they were greeted almost immediately, by the same server. The food was delicious! We ordered an old school pepperoni pizza.

I really don’t like sharing negative reviews, but we were honestly shocked at the quality of our pizza for the (very high) price. Our pizza came out with no browning on the cheese. We honestly suspect that the cheese was pre shredded. That is just not acceptable for a $20 12” pizza. We have heard great things about this place and this was our first visit. We will sadly not be back.

This place is absolutely amazing! Not only was the pizza delicious, but the atmosphere was so fun and inviting for a big group like we had or a date night. We ordered the Old School Pepperoni Pizza, New School Pepperoni Pizza, and Summer Squash Pizza! I also want to give a special shoutout to our waitress, Rebekah. I have a severe tree nut allergy, and she went above and beyond to make sure I felt safe and comfortable. Without me even asking, she marked every pizza that came out for my allergy and double-checked that I could have it, just in case I wanted to try something beyond my own order. I cannot wait to go back!!!

My friend from Italy said this is the best pizza he's had outside of his country, and that it's on par with some of the best he's ever had, period. The appetizer we had (burrata) was fine, but we ordered a red pizza (buffalo mozzarella and basil) and a white pizza (roasted leek and guanciale) and both were incredible. I even noticed a little bit of salt as you reach the crust, which is a nice flavor boost. The pizzas were cooked expertly, right in the center of the open kitchen. The back wall is full of firewood, which is super cool to see. Dessert was the crostata and cannoli, both of which were fantastic. With dessert I also had a glass of Amaro montenegro, which was served chilled, as it should be. All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the service was great. I'm definitely going back!

Foster's Market is a charming cafe and gourmet food market located at 2694 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. The cafe offers a variety of freshly made breakfast items, sandwiches, soups, salads, and baked goods that can be enjoyed on their outdoor patio or lawn. In addition to the dining experience, visitors can explore the attached market offering local gifts such as jams, coffee, toffee, cheese straws, grits, candy, cookbooks and kitchenware.
We called in a pick up order, and got to walk around a bit while we waited. It was crowded, but well worth it! We got a biscuit and it was delicious!! It seems like they have a good system to handle how popular they are. Can’t wait to go back!

Without a doubt, some Of the best food you will eat anywhere. I consider the prices the lowest I've seen for the high quality of food. The deserts/cakes are to die for. The food shop has wonderful selections to take home. If you are near Durham, you have to visit!

Loved bringing my dog here and having a wonderful brunch. I like how they were set up to seat yourself, order upfront and someone will deliver your order. It made for fast service.

The place was heaving with people when we came in Saturday for late breakfast/brunch, but the ordering situation (at the counter with lots of folks taking orders) made things move along super-quickly. We had my brother and sister-in-law's dog with us and sat outside, where "all animals are welcome." (Hank is kind of an anxious fellow but after a little medication and a treat he settled pretty well -- we were in the section to the right of the front door, down a few steps, which was unoccupied except by us for the majority of our visit.) I ordered the omelette with corn, asparagus, and I don't know what else, but it was massive and SOOOOO good! Wish I had paid attention to the sauce but it made the dish. Came with home fries that were also delicious. SIL had avocado toast, brother had chilaquiles, and both of their plates were spotless when they finished (WITHOUT help from Hank 😉), and we all enjoyed our coffees, one brewed and two fancy. The staff was amazing and friendly, the lines moved quickly, and the atmosphere was fun and congenial. Will definitely be back and bringing more visitors!

Overall really great! I loved the ham egg and cheese biscuit, and my dirty chai latte was amazing. The chai actually tasted like high quality chai. I also had tiramisu and it was great! Everything was maybe a touch pricy so I won’t come here all the time, but I will say the food was worth it if you feel like splurging. LGBT friendly as far as I’m aware, I’m visibly queer and was treated well. Gravel parking lot and mixed terrain floors inside, so if you have physical disabilities navigating the space might be challenging. They do have a ramp into the building. I added some videos of the handicap parking and the parking lot/floors.

Nice cozy place that serves breakfast and lunch. We were in Durham area and looking for a nice local place to support. Foster’s Market definitely matched what we were looking to find. We both ordered sandwiches that were fantastic. Nice size and well made. I ordered the Jammin Turkey Breast Sandwich (very yummy) with just the right amount of spice from the pepper jelly. My wife ordered the Roasted Turkey Breast sandwich, which she really enjoyed. Very nice place to visit with friendly people and plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor. If in the area you need to visit.

A fun, eclectic restaurant with a deliciously diverse menu that makes you want to come back again and again until you have tasted every item on the menu. You feel like you step back in time as you peruse the old-time candy collection and the ample selection some of the tastiest cakes and pastries on earth. There is a separate coffee counter where you can get an excellent cup of made-to-order coffee just the way you like it. There is indoor and covered and sort of uncovered outdoor seating. It was a perfect day when we went, and we sat on the covered porch and made a memory of a lifetime with the family. I plan to make this an annual family sojourn. I can’t wait to return to this “destination restaurant” in Durham. Highly recommended, be prepared for a great time and delicious meal!

A vibrant and fun Asian fusion tapas restaurant with an extensive menu of creative small plates, Juju is perfect for date nights and group dinners. The drinks are also killer - try the hand-made cocktails or Sake selections.
Friendly service and boisterous atmosphere. You definitely need a reservation to dine here during peak periods. We dined on a Wednesday evening and sat at the bar because there were no standard tables available. The full menu is still available at the bar and it feels a little more casual which is great. Plenty of parking available at the mall next door by the Panera bread. There’s also street parking. Enjoy your dinner!

Everything we had was great! Great bartender with great recommendations to start. The drinks were really good. I got the pink drink was nothing like l've ever had before! The mushroom soup was very tasty filled with mushrooms. The scallops were delicious and the steak had great flavor. The bartender convinced me to get the donut dessert and it did not disappoint! Highly recommend!

Wow! We had an amazing experience here. We walked in on a Friday night (group of 4) and they were able to accommodate us and sat us immediately. The restaurant was packed and very lively. They have a variety of vegan and vegetarian options. Every single dish we tried was delicious. My fav was the tofu buns. Food is served tapas style so the portions are a bit smaller. Service is fast. We ordered and they started bringing out plates within 5 minutes. We’re looking forward to our next visit!

Took my lady out for our pre Valentines dinner, and JUJU was highly sought out for. The environment was very nice, the waitress was super nice and also gave us some suggestions. Tapas are the portions that are served here. Ordered 4 different types and definitely was more than enough for the 2 of us. Ordered 1 off the raw portion, 1 off the bun portion, and 2 other. It's definitely a place where we shall be returning.

We ordered the drunken noodles and scallops (5 scallops). The scallops were delicious but be warned, they were spicy. The drunken noodles were ok but I won’t order that again. Hubby had the sangria and I had a Pinot Grigio. Our bill was 111.00 including tip which was pricey. No apps were bought on this trip. We had to sit at the bar because they were booked and our waiter which was the bartender never checked on us. We sat there for a while after we were done to get our check. Now I do believe the establishment should’ve had more than one bartending handling the entire restaurant to his defense. He was busy. He never did check on us… another guy ended up getting it for us… he looked like the floor manager. We won’t go again between the amount it cost and the lack of attention at our meal.

Metro 8 Steakhouse offers a unique blend of traditional American steakhouse cuisine with an Argentinean twist. The head chef and owner, Francisco Pirillo, infuses his Argentinean heritage into the menu, featuring a diverse selection that includes classic steaks alongside empanadas and chorizo. The restaurant's heated patio allows for comfortable outdoor dining throughout the year. Guests can also enjoy an extensive wine list and inventive daily specials.
I made a reservation for Friday at 5 p.m. The place is very spacious, but from the outside it doesn’t look like it. There’s parking right next to it. Our waiter was super kind, and the service overall was very friendly. The drinks were excellent and very well made. The menu has good options, and the food was delicious. They serve complimentary bread with jalapeño butter. We got the provolone with tomato (it would be great if they served it with flour tortillas), the churrasco with asparagus and a kind of chimichurri, the gnocchi with shrimp as the dish of the day, and for dessert the chocolate soufflé. To drink, we had an Argentine red wine and a Manhattan. I highly recommend this place!

This is the best steak I've had in over 10 years. When you think of tender and well marinated steak, this place is top notch. I'm a very picky eater and they basically passed my taste test with flying colors ❤️ Our waitress and hosts were very gracious and kind as well. This place is a 10 out of 10.

Came here for a solo steak dinner. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The empanada was good enough with the surprisingly delicious tomato salsa. The ribeye was so juicy and tender with a nice charred flavor. The steak was also cooked perfectly for medium rare. As for the drinks, the Pinot Noir is a nice selection. The champagne was just mediocre. Overall, a highly rated steakhouse in town. Way to go!

Amazing place. Great Staff and amazing steak. The service was impeccable. None of our drinks ever went below the halfway line. There was always someone asking if we needed anything. The steak was a great cut, flavored and cooked to perfection. I will be back every time I am back in town!

My friends and I came here for dinner and Cassie (who if I’m not mistaken is the chefs wife) was soooo hospitable, had great recommendations and made a mean Old Fashion and Manhattan! She made our experience an exceptional one. We ordered a variety of items and we were not disappointed. Oh and the butter for the rolls. AMAZING! This was my first time and it will not be my last. Metro 8 is a gem, thank me later…

I've been a fan of metro 8 since it was located on 9th street. We celebrated our wedding rehearsal dinner there in 2009, and have had numerous other work-related events there. My wife and I had dinner here a few weeks ago for the first time in a while. Since moving to Wake Forest, we just don't get to Durham very often. It did not disappoint, The lamb chops are still perfection. The provoleta great as we remembered, and always a good wine selection. Frank and Cassie are awesome as well! You have to give it a try.

They are always my go to for a constant excellent dining experience that I want to share with all friends. Best in Durham!!!

I have been wanting to go here for a while and waited until my parents were in town for a birthday. Unfortunately, it was very disappointing, and I try to only support local businesses so it's a bummer. It was pretty dead on a Tuesday evening - only a couple of tables, so it was quiet and nice lighting. There was a lot of servers who were nice, but it felt like someone was constantly asking to take our plates while we were still eating or grazing app while waiting for food (sub-par spinach artichoke dip :( and eventually they took our plates without asking when we weren't done. My dad loved his churrasco steak, said it was very flavorful. My mom's filet was just okay, not much flavor. I don't eat beef, so I got the caper chicken and honestly, it was inedible. I ate a few bites and have never not been able to eat a meal but I couldn't do it - I told my server it was quite awful and she just said ok and walked away. And they did nothing for my birthday.... incredibly disappointing for $150+ meal... wish I'd chosen somewhere else and probably won't go back.

Toast is a popular Italian sandwich shop located in Durham, offering a variety of delicious options such as panini, crostini, and more. The sandwiches feature house-cured meats and locally sourced produce, ensuring fresh and high-quality ingredients. Guests can enjoy their meal at outdoor tables while taking in the downtown scenery. Additionally, the restaurant offers convenient options for ordering and payment, including online ordering and pick-up outside the door or car.
My wife and I have been coming here for years. Just had a mutual realization that we've never had a bad meal here. Toast is consistently good because the meals always include quality ingredients. Today, for instance, the broccoli had some kick and the caponata was excellent. Thank you all and hope you keep it up.

The food was great and the atmosphere was enjoyable! This place came highly recommended, but unfortunately the service I received felt notably dismissive. I waited almost 20 minutes for a glass of water after politely asking twice, while guests around me were offered refills without prompting. Seemed like the waitress had some sort of frustration. It’s hard not to feel singled out when the difference in treatment is that apparent. I don’t know what the reason was, but it left a bad taste in an otherwise good lunch :(

I have seen Toast many of times but didn’t realize they offered a soup/salad/sandwich type of menu until recently. I ordered delivery during peak lunch hours. I had the herb pesto with chicken, a side salad and the brown butter cookies. When my food arrived, surprisingly was still warm. Speaks to the freshness! I appreciated the flavor of the sandwich, found it well balanced. I liked that the salad was not iceberg. Dressing tasted homemade. My only criticism is the cookies: the texture felt stale so they were very underwhelming. Overall I found the food to be yummy and a fair price. Recommended, and would eat here again.

Super delicious panini sandwich shop which a lovely outdoor seating area in the middle of downtown Durham. Good, quick service even during lunch time rush. Great selections of paninis. Staff were super nice. Loved the pesto chicken panini. Solid crunch on the bread without being over-toasted. Toast toasts to perfection.

My absolute favorite place in Durham. Food is delicious, service is great! When I lived downtown it was a weekly staple, and I still make it a habit to eat. Everything on the menu is delicious and fresh. Perfect to eat in or take to go!

Toast has been on my list a very long time. I live in the county and it's harder to get in town during open hours. The perfect opportunity arose to have lunch before taking mom to see Chucago at DPAC. We got the special Crostini with goat cheese and a raspberry jam.. delicious and perfect combo. Mom got a chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad was fabulous! It is hard to find a chunky version, but theirs has big chunks of chicken with the right amount of mayo. It was not a skimpy serving on the sandwich either which I liked. I got the rapini - sweet Italian sausage, roasted garlic, asiago fresca. Delicious and just the right size and flavors. Mom doesn't really care for sausage and even liked it. It was very busy, but the staff took good care of us as they rushed around to get everyone. I love they have both inside seating and outside. Great place for soup, sandwich or a salad. Give it a try!
Heather H — Google review
This place is awesome in that they use real glassware, silverware, plates and bowls. The venue was clean and trendy with plenty of character and located in the heart of Durham. This is about all of the positive things I can say about Toast to be honest. We went to dine inside. Ordering was done outside prior to entering which is also fine. The gentleman taking the order was not fine. He was condescending to one of our party when she asked a question - he pedantically read the portion of the menu that answered her question and made her embarrassed. He also said to each guest "I assume you are okay to add %20 to your bill to support the servers who bill be serving you".. the tone was such that you didn't know if you should just walk away and leave or be a mouse and say "yes". It was a bad vibe. I ordered the Rapini with Sweet Italian Sausage and a bowl of the white bean soup. While everyone has different tastes, to me the soup tasted like Honeycomb Cereal (I have not eaten Honeycomb cereal for about 40 years but still remember it). A bunch of pepper later and it was "okay". The sandwich, while looking awesome, had large chunks of gristly meat in it that in no way was in the same timezone as "Sweet Italian Sausage". It was genuinely hard to chew and I had to hork those pieces into my mouth and pretend it was something worth eating. In hindsight I should have returned my meal and given clear feedback. This is my fault and a lesson learned for me. TBH, I was concerned it would become a debate with the staff. It is hoped that the leadership at Toast will also listen and learn that snarky or presumptuous staff is an instant "not going back" coupled with food that was far below the expectation.

This cute Paninoteca was really good. The atmosphere was comfy and the decor was calming. You go to the counter and order your food then we got a number for our table and waited to be served. It was clean and the workers were friendly. We waited for our food a little longer then I would have liked but it was fresh and delicious! That’s my 2 cents now you decide.

Dashi is a two-story Japanese restaurant in Durham that offers an authentic dining experience. The first floor specializes in hearty bowls of ramen noodles, while the second floor features an izakaya with a diverse menu of Japanese small plates and a selection of drinks including beer, wine, and cocktails.
Dashi Ramen is a gem in downtown Durham, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere perfect for a casual meal. The space is charming, with a warm, intimate vibe that makes you feel right at home. The service was friendly and attentive, adding to the welcoming experience. Sitting at the bar gave me a front-row seat to the action, where I watched my meal being freshly prepared. Everything was made from scratch, and the attention to detail was clear in every bite. The food itself was fantastic—rich, flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and fresh ingredients that elevated the dish. Despite the lunchtime rush, my order came out quickly without sacrificing quality. If you’re in Durham and craving top-notch ramen with great service, Dashi is absolutely worth a visit!

I was craving Ramen while in Durham and found Dashi. At first, I was a little bothered because I stood at the entrance for almost 10 mins before I was acknowledged. I almost left, but then the waitress showed up and seated me quickly. I ordered a Tonkotsu ramen. They have a good menu, but I only tried the ramen. It was ok. I’ve had lots of Ramen before, and this one was just ok. The place is pretty cool though. The seating area is small, but spacey the way the seating is arranged.

Best traditional ramen around. Sit upstairs got a different experience. The wings are spectacular. Sam was an amazing server who offered superb guidance and helped make our evening extra special. We love this place.
Andrew T — Google review
Dashi nails the balance between cozy ramen shop and lively izakaya. We started with kimchi (bright and spicy), duck skewers (smoky and tender), and wagyu sliders (rich, juicy, and topped with kimchi — a must-order). For ramen, the chicken bowl was light and clean with silky broth, while the tonkotsu was creamy, porky comfort with charred belly and a jammy egg. Both were excellent in their own style. The warm bar vibe and crisp cocktails tied it all together.
Kelsey H — Google review
DO NOT EAT HERE. $18 bowls for horrible food quality. Ramen broth is watered down and tasteless, just salty. The only thing that was acceptable about the bowl was the noodles. The pork, toppings and broth are extremely poorly prepared. Takoyaki hushpuppies also tasted like frozen crab cakes at best, an embarrassing imitation of takoyaki. Thoroughly disappointing meal and waste of money and calories.

I got the tonkonstu ramen. The egg was great, the broth wasnt good too sour or vinegary. The pork belly was delicious and so was the pork buns. But the ramen was the worst ive ever had in durham. And the atmosphere wasnt super, but it was clean. And the service sucked. There was a sign that said wait to be seated so I waited. For like 10 min. Only three table were in there and two had paid. While I sat there waiting. So I sat my self and the girl just looked at me. I told her I came in twice and waited there and nothing happen. Then I ordered and I sat at the bar. Tell me why when the food was made it just sat there. I didnt know it was mine and I guess the cook who im sat in front of didnt know it was my ramen. So the bowl just sat beside me, where all the other food order sat. Then the girl has it to me. And I had to snatch utensils from a table bc none were given to me. I was happy to finish didnt leave a tip. Won't got back. Only bc the ramen isn't as good as other places.
Michaela S — Google review
Do not get the omakase. Not worth the money at all. TLDR. The desert on a 78$ dinner was half a chilled banna drizzled with chocolate. It was expensive but I don't mind expensive if the foods worth it. I've spent 400 dollars a person at restaurants and walked away smiling but sadly that's not the case here. The portions are tiny. The ingredients were on the cheaper side including things like corndogs and the cheaper wet scallops with the preservative iodine taste that the cook didn't get rid of by brining it first. None of the dishes that were playing off of japanese dishes were as good as the original japanese dishes. The only good things about this place was the service and the "everybody hates chris" Drink was tasty and well balanced. Maybe the ramen is good but the trust part of omakase is misplaced here.

Interesting night here at Dashi this past Saturday. We were downtown thinking of places for dinner. We had been to Dashi about 2 years ago so I called. Told "no availability till after 8:30 (it was 6 pm). So we tried a couple other places, no luck. Said what the heck, let's just go walk into to Dashi. Walked up at 6:30 and were sitting in 2 minutes? So if they want more business, train the phone people. Had the Pork and Kimchi Dumplings. Fried SO hard they were crunchy! Should have sent them back, but didn't. The we had the Shio and Miso Ramen. My Shio had litterally NO taste so I added their hot sauce ($2) and soy sauce and pepper and it was palatable. The wife's Miso Ramen she liked. Plenty of noodles. Having had Ramen in Hell's Kitchen NYC as a comparison this leaves alot to be desired. The upstairs is quaint, feels like NYC. Overall an ok dinner but nothing to make us say "WOW" or come back anytime soon.

Cucciolo Osteria Durham is a cozy Italian restaurant located in the Durham train station, offering a modern twist on classic Italian cuisine. Opened in 2018 by cousins Jimmy and Julian Kim, who drew inspiration from their experiences living in Europe, the restaurant features a limited menu of fresh pastas, salads, and bruschette available for curbside pickup and delivery within a 2-mile radius.
Delicious! Italian deliciousness! We had dinner and drinks at the bar. Good service, good food. Ambiance but could be a little more. Very noisy, hollow sounding, my only Complaint. (Industrial, brick. Fits with the area a whole, but doesn’t make for cozy feel) We felt Portions NOT shareable. We shared and I only got 2 bites of main dish. Would order my own next time. Had a beet salad-delish, and Tajarin was excellent! BREAD IS DELICIOUS-but have to ask for it. Not served otherwise. In a walkable area from our hotel. Felt safe at 9-10:00. Would go back again. Delicious!!

Very very loud place Very narrow Sat in high tops mostly. The food was ok and a lot of it was too creamy and missing acid or an element to break it up Kinda struggled to hear each other Waiters were kind We were told the truffle pasta would taste like truffle and olives, the olives were not prominent as an fyi The aracini missed acid The beef that everyone raves about has too much mayo, it's all you taste Overall felt like a lot of fat missing acid Also we left hungry and didn't want to eat here anymore

Asked to be seated at a table. They said they don't sit parties of 1 at tables, only at bar. Telling them you have a disability is irrelevant to them... they do not care. Sat me at very end of bar so a portion of my area was used for the bottles of wine in the ice bucket... but the whole bar was open. I had an appetizer, entre, dessert, espresso, and bottle of wine. I was there to enjoy myself... as they came highly recommended. The bartender was awesome. Mushroom appetizer was incredible. The onions were undercooked and crunchy in the pasta sauce (Amatriciana) so it overpowered the dish a bit. Tiramisu and espresso were delicious. When I left, there were (3) tables that were never used. They could have accommodated my ADA request, but no. They have a BS policy about not sitting single parties at tables. They sat me at the very end of the bar, sharing a space with an ice bucket. Nothing like listening to wine bottles being pulled the entire dinner to really set the vibe.

A new gem in the Durham area. The food tastes very good and the price, compared to price of everything these days, is very reasonable. Both entrees were $21. Definitely give it a try if you're feeling italian or take a date there. I'd definitely visit again!

Super friendly staff who were very attentive and accommodating. We were early for our reservation and they were able to seat us right away. It was our first time and our waiter was very patient in explaining the menu and explaining the portion sizes and how to order. We loved all our dishes! The Bruschetta was very tasty (we got the ones with dates) We ordered separate pasta dishes which were the perfect portion sizes and both tasted great. We shared the lemon butter chicken which I highly suggest doing asnit ended up being the perfect amount of food. Dessert was great as well. We were excited to learn they have a sister location in Raleigh and we will be trying it soon

Food was great. Portion sizes were comfortable, not the usual extra large pasta bowls. That makes it great if you want to enjoy pasta and not feel too heavy after, but less great if you’re really hungry or planning to share. Tomato bruschetta was way more delicious than I expected for such a basic dish. Service was really great, everyone who works there is super kind. Pretty slow though. Took us 2 hours and we were trying to be kinda speedy. I think it took an hour from ordering to entrees. So go when you have two hours to languish, and aren’t already starving or on a time crunch. Dessert I think was better than dinner. The panna cotta was so soft and light it was unbelievable. Aesthetic is dim lighting with concrete floors, so your parents might complain that it’s dark and loud.

One of my favorite meals in Durham! If you’re dairy free ask for their dairy free pesto! Cocktails are also delish!
McKenna W — Google review
If you are looking for classic Italian (not American Italian) fare, this is a decent spot. I didn't feel that anything we had was very special but I am snooty when it comes to pasta. The truffle pasta was somewhat one-note and was served lukewarm despite coming out after the rest of my party's plates. The rigatoni was good but not anything who is a good home cook can't do. The tiramisu was very traditional, which I like to see, but not worth 11.50, a pretty high price for dessert. Wouldn't go back because it's not worth the trek from Chapel Hill, but wouldn't discourage friends visiting Durham from trying it if they need a new spot for a date with great service.

Banh's Cuisine is a no-frills, cash-only counter-service restaurant in Durham, NC that offers flavorful Chinese and homestyle Vietnamese specials. It's known for its authentic Vietnamese experience and delightful showcase of Vietnamese specialties. The menu includes vegetarian options and the restaurant is praised for its great value, tasty food, quick service, and cozy atmosphere with plenty of seating. The uncomplicated menu provides a decent amount of options for both dine-in and takeout orders.
Good spot for Vietnamese eats, Menu changes often The soup today we got was full of good minced meat and flavor They have plenty side dishes for a few dollars Place seems to be there for a while. I liked the sticky rice with peanuts Nothing fancy but good food ! Parking is tricky for dt Durham, but you can find street parking

I will definitely visit again! I think I just didn't order the right thing. I got the chicken curry which didn't really have any flavor. Everything else looked good on the menu and I'm sure next time I go, my review will change to a 5 star

This place isn’t cash only anymore! They take cards. That kept me from trying it for a long time because I never carry cash. Also it’s phenomenal, the folks running it are really sweet and the specials on Wednesday and Saturday are probably the best bargain in the state of NC. Delicious food on the cheap!

No fuss, no hassle Viet/Chinese joint on 9th street. They take card. If you’re looking for extravagance, go elsewhere. The food speaks for itself. The price confirms the experience.

Tiny cafe was packed. Ordered the number 2 and an unsweet iced tea. Food came out quickly, and was hot and fresh. Generous portions and good options for budget friendly meals.

We ordered kongpao chicken and sweet and sour chicken. Averaging about $8 each dish. Probably the most best value in town. Don't know how they make money by such a price😅 Maybe they care more about people then business. Both dishes tasted good. Sweet and sour is very crispy and kongpao is flavourful. Anyways. It's owned by a small family business. They are super welcoming and courteous. Lunch time was fully packed.

We had hot and sour soup, ginger chicken and sesame tofu and they tasted like 5 star dishes. They were actually out of the soup but the owner made us a fresh pot. The chicken was super tender, and the plentiful amount of fresh ginger and broccoli was exactly what we needed. It was a delicious and nutritious meal! (Thank you to the owner who made fresh soup for us).

Food is good. Vietnamese offered on Wednesday and Saturday (It satisfies the craving when I do not want to drive to Little Saigon in Greensboro). Portions are good for the price.

Zweli's is a unique Zimbabwean restaurant located in the country, offering a variety of traditional dishes such as braised oxtail, piri piri chicken, and jollof rice with sadza. The casual ambiance of the restaurant makes it an ideal spot for group dining. A must-try dessert at Zweli's is the magwinyas, sugar-coated doughnut balls that perfectly complement the savory meals.
This location seems to have undergone a very nice remodel. The old photos don't look anything like what it looks like now, it's much nicer. The staff was super friendly and helped us navigate the menu (which is minimal which I like). They said that in order to foster the tradition of family style sharing, you can pick two sides to be "bottomless" for the whole table. I like the idea of not just saying the food should be shared around the table, but actually helping make that happen by providing bottomless sides. Now to the food - what an experience!! I haven't had food like this before, and was instantly in love with each thing I tried. This is a must visit for anyone who wants to expand their tastes. Located just a few blocks from the bus station there's easy access. We hopped on the bus station near our house and took it to the terminal (I love Durham's free bus system, it's so easy) and then walked a few minutes to Zweli's. I recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants a unique experience and wants to support a great local restaurant doing things right!

their peri peri shrimp skewers were pretty good and the cabbage was amazing (though I'm easy to please when it comes to cabbage, so take that as you will) but wasn't a huge fan of other dishes. everything was good but not great. peanut butter sauce was a little too sweet in my opinion and they really drowned the collards in it. definitely worth a try if you're coming through the area but I just can't justify the price enough to want to come back.
Kyle B — Google review
I had my first experience with Zimbabwean cuisine recently. The vegan options were clearly marked on the menu, which was a plus, and the portion sizes were satisfying. However, the food itself was just okay—nothing that really stood out. I might consider coming back if I were in a pinch, but it's not a place that left a lasting impression.

The food was fantastic. I was a little shy on the goat, but I was very surprised. The food was amazing. You must have the plantains also. The service was great also. They made you feel wanted and were happy you were there. Thank You all. Oh by the way they do add on the tip automaticly with an option to tip more when you pay.

There were great vibes from the moment we entered the space. Quick seating, engaging server who explained the inspiration behind the restaurant, and exciting menu options all contributed to an overall excellent experience. And dinner was delicious. Favorite items included the oxtails, curried cabbage, beef samosas, jollaf rice, and 'The Mayor' signature bourbon drink.
Anthony H — Google review
First time there and the location was partially big. I recommend going Tuesday at lunch its not crowded then and you are sure to be served good. We ordered the ox tails, sausage, and Beef Samosas (comes with a ranch or mayonnaise based sauce really couldn't tell which one it was). With a side of Jolla fries and Chakalaka. The jello price in my opinion was not spicy enough. I had to request a a spicy piri to put in it to get it to be spicy worthy. Some the entires are kinda on the pricy side so I wouldn't recommend eating here all the time but would say it is a good date night space. P.S if you take out its a little cheaper.
Patrick S — Google review
This was a nice place for authentic African cuisine. The atmosphere was nice and intimate and the service didn't disappoint. The oxtails were tender with a nice Au jus-like broth. You must try the Veggie Samosas, Piri Piri Chips and Plantains.
Isaiah H — Google review
I REALLY wanted to support and like this place but most of it just fell below the mark. The presentation and atmosphere are beautiful but the food leaves MUCH to be desired. I’m use to African food having spice, kick and full of flavor. The jallof rice was bland dry and hard. There was no flavor whatsoever almost as if someone just spritz color on top of some day old left out to dry rice. The chicken skin was nice and flavorful but the chicken underneath bland. Found myself rubbing the meet on the skin to try and get some flavor to no avail. My wife had the tofu. She didn’t even bother to bring it back home and ate half a piece of one. There’s no hot sauce. No seasoning on the tables. The collard greens are on. We got a sample but because the restaurant had no hot sauce we opted out of them but that was a mistake because the cabbage was hard and bland as well. The food seems to be catered for people with bland pallets. I wasn’t impressed. The “bill” came which is just the waiter with a screen never showed what I purchased or a breakdown so I have no idea why I paid $60 for this with a discount. The gratuity is automatically included and I’m fine with that but the blurb on the menu makes it seem like my obligation to pay it to ensure they have a living wage. Where is the owners responsibility to ensure they have a living wage? My wife waited 25 min for her Pepsi to come and had to ask for it. I won’t return.

Restaurant
Taqueria La Vaquita is a popular spot in Durham known for its delicious Mexican fare. The restaurant is famous for its tacos, tortas, and classic plates, as well as fresh fruit waters and other Mexican soft drinks. Despite its simple digs, it's often busy due to the tasty crispy carnitas and cochintia pibil studded with habaneros and pickled onions. The large fiberglass cow on top of the building makes it easily recognizable in downtown Durham.
One of the very best Mexican restaurants in the triangle. Tons of options and everything is high quality, authentic (as far as I can tell), and delicious. Service is fast and friendly. Outdoor seating only and you can find many street food style options that are less common in typical Mexican restaurants. An all time favourite of mine.
John J — Google review
I came to la Vaquita to film a school project on Hispanic foods and had a wonderful time talking with Antonio about the restaurant. The staff were incredibly kind and the food was incredible (must try the tamales!). I really appreciated that they were willing to share their experience and I loved learning how they keep their food authentic and fresh (which can be rare). Will be back for sure!

What a great find for us! This place is great! The staff is great and the food is even better. It’s all outdoor seating but there are fans and shade. 10/10 recommend.

I’ve lived in the triangle my whole life and this has been the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. It’s real, affordable, and the best. I will definitely be coming back here and trying everything on their menu. Everything we had was a hit. The quesabirrias were to die for. Literally

The pupusas here are great. They are big and heavy, so they are not cheap on their portions. It definitely feels worth what it costs. My personal suggestion is to get the pork and cheese, the revueltas. Delicious. Little more: We were not given any recado, (I’m not even sure if they even offer it), but they did give us curtido. Personally, I did not like it. The pupusa were still hot and tasty. Apologies for such a bad photo.

Reasonably priced and SO DELICIOUS. No frills, casual atmosphere, and solid food. My burrito was STUFFED and was so, so filling.

Atmosphere is perfect for a low cost taqueria but be forewarned - there is NO indoor seating and today it is 95+ in the shade!

The food here is always good. We call ahead, because there are often lines, but in 20 minutes get ready for arguably the best Mexican food in the area. We try different dishes, and today's included mole which was the best I've had in years. Treat yourself. You deserve it. BTW, It's outdoors seating. And NC weather is made for that.

Eastcut Sandwich Bar in Durham is a casual spot that specializes in generous sandwiches, salads, and craft beer. Their menu features a variety of sandwich styles from different East Coast regions, such as the Spicy Gabagool inspired by New York City's Italian sub and the Balboa Beefsteak authentic to Philly. The Jaybird pays homage to Durham's fried chicken sandwich tradition with a generous smear of Dukes mayo.
Impeccable sandwich shop!! Came here for lunch and tried both The Jane and the Reggio chicken sandwiches, along with some curly fries- everything was a solid 10/10! They all had way more flavor than expected, well done chefs! 🤩Although it was rather busy, our food came out pretty quick! There is loads of outdoor seating, the only complaint is the tight parking. I would love to see their dessert options expand. Super friendly staff, can’t wait to come back!

LOVE Eastcut. Any version of their chicken sandwiches is a MUST. I personally go for the Buff Chick, because the buffalo sauce and ranch combo with their super soft potato roll and their high quality chicken cutlet is 👌🏼 Now the fries can be a hit or miss at times. Today they were unbelievably crunchy. Still good, but more like chips than fries. Give them a try!

The menu options are unique and interesting. The house made mozzarella sticks were very tasty. The chicken cutlet sandwiches are juicy and crispy. The restaurant was clean, cool, and inviting. We look forward to trying the other chicken sandwiches.

I love the patio space at Eastcut and it's so close to where we shop and work. It's a bit tucked away so rarely overcrowded on workdays! The parking is a little tricky if it's busy but definitely worth a stop!

The food was delicious here! I wasn't a fan of sweet tea or lemonade and it took really long for my food to come out (~30 mins). When I did interact with the staff, they were very nice. I would highly recommend trying this restaurant.

Jen with Offline - We really enjoyed the sandwiches and the Calabrian Caesar Salad with Chicken! Nice beer selection, too (although not expansive). A relaxed atmosphere for meeting up with friends and family. Inside and outside dining are available.

It was just okay. There's always someone online recommending Eastcut, but after my second visit, I just don't get the hype. A sandwich and a tip was over $16, and to be honest, it was really bland and boring. There's a lot that can be done to a sandwich to create flavor, but I don't think Eastcut has found it yet.
Terry S — Google review
What a great little find, sandwiches galore with what’s quite possibly the best mango guava passion-fruit lemonade. So good after my meal I walked back to counter to purchase another one and they said, “I could just refill it for you!” Not overconsumption but it’s just so flavorful. My partner who is some sort of a gastrophile, her ability to recognize a good restaurant and great items that tantalize the tastebuds is just uncanny. She choose falafel salad and I had the Mac Steak?, it was hot and good with a side of curly fries. I know they are really good at cold sandwiches but I opted for this. It was so hot and not overly salty nor trying to be a Philly but good in its own right. When we return to Eastcut, I’ll review a cold sandwich. More goodness to come!

Farmers Markets
Durham Farmers' Market has been a gathering place for growers, crafters, and musicians at Durham Central Park for over 20 years. Visitors can enjoy people-watching while exploring the colorful rows of fresh produce, local honey, flowers, cheese, pasta, and crafts. The market also offers food trucks like American Meltdown and Pie Pushers. With various farms represented at the market, visitors can find fresh produce, eggs, baked items, meats, and cheeses.
I love visiting the farmers market when I’m in Durham! The selection is always amazing, but my favorite part is the flowers. There’s something special about bringing home a fresh bouquet every time!

Great farmer market with diverse vendors from local farms owners to bakery & coffee to native plants and local honey and even some crafts. Although still on the small side but has plenty to offer! With more potential to grow at a central location ☺️

Great open air market! Committed to local business, this is a community hub with art, music, local food & produce, fresh flowers, and more than I could possibly list - no pets allowed in market though there is an artist craft market in the same area that does welcome pets. The produce is located in a covered pavilion safe from sun/rain but the rest of the market is uncovered. Free parking lot within walking distance and near a park!

very cute smaller scale farmers’ market, but a lot of variety of vendors, artists and food trucks! I just bought snacks/food for this first time visit (shout out Strong Arm Baking + Soul Cocina!🤤), but getting my pockets and bags ready for next time!

A good sized Farmer's Market with about 30-40 vendors including crafts, food trucks, and produce. There is a good crowd and they have the flow of traffic going one way as a COVID mitigation technique. People wear their masks here and abide by the rules. It's right next to a park so it's just super welcoming to head there and sit on a bench while eating some freshly purchased food. Since it's in the heart of Downtown Durham you could also visit some local places or wander about afterwards and check out some cool mural art.
Sky T — Google review
Really cute market with lots of veggies, meats, pastries, pottery, adult beverages and homemade/locally made goods. Definitely worth a visit, even if the weather is dreary. It seems like vendors prefer cash but do accept card payments as well. There were signed posted that dogs are not allowed under the covered part of the market.
Courtney C — Google review
What’s better than waking up on a Saturday, taking a short drive to Durham, and indulging in and supporting all of the amazing local vendors of your community? From the fresh flowers, to the divine cheeses, and the massive park for kids to run around - it’s no question why it continues to be such a growing success. With summer coming in just a few weeks, don’t miss out on exploring all that the market has to offer.

Restaurant
M Tempura, opened by Chef Michael Lee in 2018, offers a unique omakase-style tempura dining experience. Similar to omakase sushi, the chef's choice selection is served one course at a time, ensuring each piece is enjoyed at its freshest and crispiest. The restaurant provides an intimate and cozy setting for savoring quality and thoughtful meals.
Amazing food! We opted for the M omakase experience and loved every tasting menu item we were served. The place is quaint and great to go on dates or with a group of friends and is in the heart of downtown Durham with lots of parking on the streets or garage. We were also fortunate to say hi to Chef Savannah from Top Chef that night. Highly recommend trying it out and we will surely come back again!
D F — Google review
We went partially because we’re Top Chef fans, but we were also intrigued by a Japanese brunch. We sat at the bar so we could watch the cooking which was really fun to engage. Please be aware there is no Omakase at brunch, but there’s a whole bunch of intriguing choices and we quite enjoyed it. It is meant to be shared the only challenge we had was picking which dishes to order. We thought the omelette was incredible and I think that was the biggest surprise The only disappointment at least for brunch it doesn’t seem you can trust the online system if there’s space or not. We were driving home so we thought we’d chance to see if we could get in for brunch even though it looked like it might be filled.
Marci F — Google review
Let’s just say this: I went to M Tempura expecting a decent dinner. What I got was a tempura-based love story—with Jennifer as my culinary matchmaker and the chef as my trusty narrator. Dining solo here doesn’t mean dining in silence. Jennifer, my waitress and now spiritual flavor guide, suggested I add the *brie course* to my tempura tasting. I hesitated. Brie? With tempura? Ma’am… YES. Brie, nori, honey, and truffle in one bite? I don’t know what kind of culinary witchcraft that was, but I’d follow it into battle. Or at least into another reservation. Every course was thoughtfully prepared, with the chef offering insights that made me slow down and actually *think* about what I was eating. It wasn’t just dinner—it was a little education in flavor. The tempura itself? A revelation. Light, crisp, not drowning in batter like your usual “tempura adjacent” spots. You could *actually* taste the ingredient inside. And let me tell you, the root vegetable course? Delicate. Earthy. Unexpectedly elegant. To top it off, the ginger ice cream was the kind of palate cleanser that makes you consider skipping dessert for the rest of your life because nothing else will live up. Would I go back? I’m already planning my return like it’s a second date with someone who actually listens. **Pro tips:** * Go with the tasting menu if you're not starving—plenty of food, but no food coma. * Don’t skip the brie add-on. Seriously. * Sit at the bar for chef interaction if you're solo—makes the experience that much richer. This isn’t just a dinner spot—it’s a damn delight.
ALLISON D — Google review
Incredible 7 course omakase! All the bites were perfectly prepared and the soft shelled shrimp were very fun. The wine pairing went great with the courses. It did take a little time between bites and we were there for about 3 hours total. I think this menu is the best bang for your buck compared to all the tasting menu options across the m restaurants.

reserved online with open table. you need to preselect your experience and put a credit card. Got the tempura experience for 75. it included several small dishes through you the night and a variety of tempura followed by a small rice dish, miso soup and ginger ice cream.. the first shrimp tempura was heavenly !! overall the experience was really nice. it took around 2 hours to complete. we had our reservation at 7:15 and felt we had to rush at the end since they close at 9. maybe don't let people reserve that ? other than probably from the best restaurants I had in Durham ! book this for your next date night or special gathering !

My partner and I came here for our 13th wedding anniversary — we don’t live in Durham but we were visiting my in-laws. It’s long been on my list because of Top Chef but I was still totally floored by the experience. It was the best meal I’ve had in a very long time. We had the M Omakase with beverage pairing. It was very well-paced and every course was a pleasant surprise. Standouts were the tempura shrimp, scallop, and house-cured trout roe. I also loved the meal, miso-marinated seabass on rice with the barley tea dashi that came halfway through. It took an already so deluxe dish to the next level. The service was attentive but not overbearing. We had a lovely time, thank you! Can’t wait to come back.

Phenomenal experience with the crew at M Tempura. We opted for the M Omakase tasting menu and blown away with the 7 courses. Each course was different and this restaurant puts a different twist on each plate. I highly recommend the tasting menu experience. The staff and service is amazing. Shout out to Nubia!!! Our water was never empty for longer than 10 minutes. This restaurant is top tier when it comes to service and deserves more praise than what they receive.
Phil E — Google review
An amazing restaurant to try if you are a sea food and fish lover and also appreciate fresh produce. I particularly went there to meet Chef Savannah (a Top Chef Finalist). It was amazing to see how friendly she was and she interacts with you while cooking if you are at the bar seating (would definitely recommend that). We went there to celebrate our 6 month wedding anniversary and had a great experience. We had the M Omakase meal and loved every bit of it. The menu progression is amazing. It starts off with chawanmushi (Japanese savory custard). It is creamy and had a good umami from the walnut oil and trout roe. The salmon crudo was bright and fragrant. Next was the dolma and my favorite dish of the menu. It had a very unique flavor to it. Next were the tempuras and all of the them were out of the world. The batter was the best I had so far. Every produce was fresh. The meal with miso marinated seabass was great. Overall, a highly recommended restaurant. Everything was seasoned well and the service was fast.

Food was good, nothing spectacular. Didn't really seem worth the price. The chicken was char roasted (from what I could tell, similar to how alpaca does thiers) and then put on top of the rice with the sauce around the edge. Which, to my understanding, isn't how adobo is typically supposed to be made. So it wasn't really infused with the flavor. They forgot to bring our appetizer. I was able to flag down the server, after we were pretty much done eating our main course, to ask about it. They ended up giving it to us at no charge. So that was nice.

Extra points for being so accommodating when we asked about my food allergies. That is always extra special to me. We started with the lumpia 10/10! Perfect crunch to start the meal. For our meals, I have the Pork belly. It was full of flavor and my hubby had the salmon special with the Brussels and sweet potatoe fries. The fish was cooked to perfection and I highly recommend the Brussels a little char and sweet and salty of the bacon jam… Yum Yum!!! We also got the Peach Cobbler Bread Pudding. The fries are just like ones you get at the ball park! The food was amazing! We can't wait to try the French toast on our next visit. It's a hidden gem! Definitely gonna recommend to all our friends. Sorry for taking pictures halfway through. It looked so good we couldn't help ourselves.

I have been wanting to try this spot since moving to the area. I finally had the chance today and was pleased. I was greeted immediately upon entry by a nice man, who even asked if it was my first time and provided instructions on how to order. He was very welcoming! I then placed my order with another man who was also nice. He came to check on me and even offered a sample of their version of cabbage, made with spices from his home country of Zimbabwe. I appreciated that especially since the cabbage was vegan and tasty! I decided to get the shrimp and grits, a side of eggs with cheddar and a strawberry lemonade. The eggs were scrambled well, hot and exactly how I like them. The shrimp and grits were hot, seasoned well, and the perfect consistency. The lemonade was delicious also. If I had to leave one critique I would omit the additional season salt sprinkled atop the shrimp. It made the dish a bit more salty than I like but without it, chef's kiss! The restaurant itself was clean, had afobeats playing and an overall great atmosphere. I would definitely be back to try their other selections because their soul food looks delicious also!

I'm so sad I have lived in Durham all these years and never ate here before. The food was PHENOMENAL! Sometimes good food is salty food, NOT HERE! Flavor on top of flavor, spices and seasonings ...DELISH! The food is made to order so it is fresh and hot when you receive it. And the plate is FULL; there will be leftovers. Their customer service goes above and beyond. They love their customers and they want you to know it. I will be back!

My daughter and I came here for breakfast. The vibe in this place is so chill. The music will have you dancing and eating all at the same time. The gentleman that helped us with our order was so nice. He went above and beyond for us. 10 out 10 highly recommend!! We will be back!!

This establishment serves up a satisfying fare at an attractive price point. I highly recommend the chicken and fish plate, where the chicken tenders stand out with their irresistible crunch and juicy interior. The whiting fish, while flavorful, could benefit from a crispier exterior. The shrimp and yams are also a solid choice. The house-made lemonade tends towards the sweeter side, so consider diluting it with water. While the Oreo banana pudding is enjoyable, the lack of real bananas detracts from the experience. In conclusion, this spot delivers delicious, budget-friendly meals that satisfy you.

Stopped by for brunch on a Saturday afternoon (7/5/25 around 11:30) and we're blown away by our experience. Stylz, the chef, was super friendly and cooked up two incredible dishes. We ordered the French Toast Combo with scrambled eggs/pork bacon and the Creole Shrimp and Grits (cheesy) OMG. 5/5 stars. Great music/vibe and the food came out quickly. A must-visit spot in Durham.

Wow. Where do I even begin? The food was beyond incredible. It was truly some of the most delicious and soulful food I have ever had. They'll serve you the kind of meals that you'll remember for a long, long time. If you're looking for amazing Southern/Soul food classics, this is the place for you. The hushpuppies are a must-try, as is their hot honey fried chicken on waffles and their shrimp and grits + strawberry lemonade. Get the peaches and cream topping addition with the waffle for an out of this world flavor combo! The staff is also incredibly lovely, hardworking, and considerate. Numerous people came up to us and made sure we were enjoying our meals, checking to see if we needed anything, and even offering advice on side condiments to add to elevate our dishes. I can't recommend this place enough!
Olivia H — Google review
We came on a Saturday morning and got the Fish and Grits. Honestly it was the best fried fish I have ever eaten. It was flavorful and crunchy without excessive breading and the inside was moist and steamy- not greasy. The creole grits had excellent spices and flavor. The homemade strawberry lemonade was delicious, so we got seconds. Here's the best part: everyone coming through the door to get a pickup order received a comment from the cook. "How's your momma? I saw your brother yesterday!" That sort of thing. He knew everyone and knew them well. This restaurant is clearly an institution in this neighborhood and that is props in and of itself. The book selection couldn't have been more diverse and the poet's quote on the wall fit the place perfectly. When you go on road trips for great experiences, you pray you find a place like this.

Indian restaurant
Cheeni is the latest addition to the dining scene in downtown Durham, brought to you by Preeti Waasis, a renowned chef and owner of Cheeni Indian Food Emporium in Raleigh. The restaurant offers a regional and homestyle menu that reflects Preeti's family food memories from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal. Visitors have praised the warm and knowledgeable staff who are accommodating to dietary restrictions such as keto options.
Fantastic Indian food! We were a large group that came for a hosted function and they managed to serve about 20 people without much discontinuity between courses and tables. The seating is fun and interesting and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The portion sizes are very hearty. All of the dishes were fantastic, with the hightlights being the cabbage and the mushroom dishes. Nearly everyone at the table ordered a Mr India and it was a very well put together drink. My only concern is that we did not actually get a chutney tray which I think would have really complemented some of the dishes. All in all, if you’re looking for upscale Indian, this is the place to go.

Some very delicious and fresh lunch dishes. Very impressed at how fresh the ingredients were, best samosas I’ve had. Reasonable lunch prices. Love the seating and table designs. I came back for dinner, and was blown away. Their dinner was so delicious - the style of Indian they deliver is phenomenal. The quality of cooking and masalas done was so perfect. Spices are there, and it’s so well executed. This is definitely a top 5 downtown Durham dining for food.
John L — Google review
Cheeni Durham is a nice spot for a special occasion or date night. The décor and ambience are warm, inviting, and authentically styled, and the service is truly top-notch. The drinks menu is extensive, with a good selection of craft cocktails to choose from. Where the experience fell short for us was the food. The vegetarian options in particular were underwhelming. Many dishes felt like elevated versions of everyday staples such as dal chawal or curd rice—comforting, yes, but not necessarily what one expects at gourmet pricing. Portions were also quite small for the price point, which made the overall value feel lacking. The speakeasy was another disappointment. Marketed as a “Bollywood speakeasy,” it turned out to be a small room with televisions and the same cocktails available at the restaurant—not quite the unique experience one might imagine. Overall, Cheeni Durham was worth trying once for the atmosphere and service, but given the cost and limited vegetarian appeal, it’s unlikely we’ll return. More of a novelty than a truly memorable Indian dining experience.
Bugs S — Google review
In my 50 years of eating food, I have never had a better holistic dining experience outside of a home than the one I had at Cheeni while on a work trip to Durham. The food, is exceptional. I went on two different nights because after my first visit and after engaging with the staff on their feedback, I found myself compelled to come back for some of the dishes I didn’t have the space to try. And I wasn’t disappointed. The Lamb. The croquettes. The samosas. The daal (the best I’ve ever had outside of my mom’s kitchen). The cocktails were brilliant and nuanced extensikns and adaptations of flavors we’ve crossed but never thought would shine in a glass that way. This is the best assortment of Indian food as well as the best Indian food. Oohhh. Even the Mango Lassi was next level. But that’s not what makes it a standout. The service. Indian restaurants often fail because they can’t nail the high bar of high class fine dining expectations without compromising the warmth, energy, and explosion of flavor that patience and a familial touch allows. They often have to pick and thus one shines while the other fades. Cheeni has found a way to do it and i attribute that to the powerhouse mother / daughter tandem curating every detail and then extending their passion to and through a truly exceptional staff. This only happens when a family owns it. Cheeni has met the bar set by our other favorite, Hall’s Chophouse in Charleston, where the brothers shine in a similar way. But I tip my hat to Cheeni, because while the Hall brothers brought us up, Cheeni brought me home. Amy will make you feel the same way.

Had a great meal at Cheeni. The decor is stunning and the atmosphere is so inviting. The food was excellent across the board. The paneer was some of the softest I've ever had, and we were so impressed by the karela chaat—a truly superior dish we wouldn't normally have tried. Highly recommend this spot for a great meal

Absolutely phenomenal experience at Cheeni! From the moment we walked in, the warm welcome and ambiance + thoughtful décor set the stage for what turned out to be an unforgettable dinner. Every dish was bursting with vibrant flavors that felt both authentic and elevated. Clearly crafted with care and creativity. The service was impeccable: friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the menu. We left feeling completely satisfied, impressed, and already planning our next visit. Cheeni is a true gem in Durham! a perfect spot for anyone who loves thoughtful food and exceptional hospitality.

Nothing left and also forgot to take a photo until I took a bite out of the biriyani. This is a must go place if you want good Indian food that is outside of the norm butter chicken. Will definitely be back.
David O — Google review
I’m stunned by the venomous, negative reviews. The food was excellent, different with complex flavors that are not always easy to achieve like the charred eggplant appetizer: brinjal something. It had a hint of smokiness, absolutely delicious and I’ve never had that in an Indian restaurant in the US. Service was also very good, waiters were super fast and friendly, food came out fast. We’re in Raleigh but I’d drive to Durham to eat there again.

Sandwich shop
Ideal's Sandwich and Grocery, located in east Durham, is a beloved spot known for incorporating broccoli rabe into their signature dishes like the chicken cutlet sandwich and Philly roast pork. In addition to their delicious sandwiches, they offer grocery staples such as pasta and fresh-baked bread, along with rotating take-and-bake dinner options. The shop has garnered a strong following within the community due to its efficient service and consistent delivery of quality goods.
Ideal’s has the best sandwiches in the entire Triangle, possibly even in North Carolina. We’ve tried the chopped cheese, uncle primo’s chicken cutlet, and the fried eggplant with ricotta. All of these sandwiches are delicious and made with high quality ingredients. The bread is also fantastic - recommend upgrading to the focaccia if that is an option. The homemade chips and cookies are also amazing. This is a destination spot that my family always asks to visit when they come into town. My recommendation for first timers is to get there early and get in line before they open. There will be a line down the block by noon. Highly recommend this spot and will continue to support them. 10/10!
Katherine A — Google review
Felt like I was back home in Joisey. Uncle Primos Chicken cutlet sandwich is AMAZING. Perfect amount of saucy. Came back three weekends in a row just to get it again. Hours are limited and there’s always a line but it moves fast and the sandwich is ready in a few minutes. And try to get there earlier before they run out of bread (which they often do), but also not so early that the line is too long (we waited for half an hour the first time and an hour this time but worth it) The interior is cute, with some pricey sandwich themed merch and a wonderfully busy kitchen. Also, great pricing.

Nice little hole in the wall sandwich shop in Durham. Arrived Saturday at 1130 am and waited about 45 minutes in line outside in heat. There's a bathroom inside which is well kept. It's also hot AC inside where you order. There's cold water outside for those waiting and a couple benches. Staff are very pleasant. Sandwich half size is enough for a meal, the bread is good easy to bite but also hearty on the chicken primo that is tasty meat though it could have used more sauce. Other staff said the chorizo special was really good but could use more salt and the bread was a bit chewy. I'd also recommend a hot sandwich over cold. Worth a try once.
Neha P — Google review
Hole in the wall spots are almost always the best. Been a few times before but honestly was too busy eating to get pics😅 went today to grab something specific but we were later and it was already sold out so we tried other new to us items. The bread is phenomenal. The meats. The layering of everything. I can use a lot of flashy words here but truthfully, delicious works. Period. They don't have a huge menu but what they do have is done very well. The space is small. There's almost always a line. It moves fast. There's a few pocnic tables outside. They sell breads and sauce and a few frozen pasta dishes etc.
Amanda M — Google review
I never thought I'd actually get the chance to come here. They're only open from 12 to 3, and the two times I tried before, the line was out the door and I just couldn't bring myself to wait. But two days ago, on Friday, I finally decided to give it a shot and stand in line. I tried Uncle Primo's Chicken Cutlet and the Harlem Chopped Cheese and both were excellent. The chicken cutlet was amazing. It was perfectly cooked, with a sauce that had this vinaigrette like flavor that worked perfectly with the sandwich. The peppers and arugula added a great touch, and the bread was incredible really good as it was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The chopped cheese was just as good. The meat was super flavorful, and the peppers gave it this really unique and delicious taste. Service was good and the prices aren't bad at all for what they give you. My final thoughts are that it's definitely tough to get food here because of the limited hours and the long lines though. In their defense, I spent more time in the line then waiting for my food so they are at least efficient. The food was amazing though. One of the best I've had in Durham for sure.

Generous portion, was quite the line on a Saturday afternoon, died down around 1.. Limited bench seating making it hard Place gets busy open for a few hours only.. Delicious sandwich, toppings need to be dispersed better but was good Got the uncle primo. Very generous on the chicken

The new location in the Warehouse District/West Village apartment building continues to attract patrons with its generous portions and diverse menu, featuring favorites like fajita salad with shrimp and beef tacos on corn tortillas.
after being a regular at the Cary branch I was curious to see how this fairs out.. Same food quality and prices, somehow the menu felt a little different and with more specials. we ate early at 5:30 and it wasn't crowded so service was amazing there's a parking lot out front but it was full will be coming back ! the molcajete is our favorite and easily feeds 2-3 people.

Went to a few other locations. This location was great. Is located in an old rustic brick building downtown Durham. Atmosphere was great. Food was awesome. Drinks were good. Definitely tried if you’re in the area or never tried this restaurant before. Friendly staff food was very hot and delicious. We ordered the lunch fajitas and split cheese dip.

Great food, friendly staff. Went for lunch with a friend. Nachos were good, and my salad was diecious. We were not rushed and they continued to refill our drinks even after we paid while we were still sitting & chatting. The entrance is not on the main street. When you see the sign, head back the side of the building. They have outside seating and the entrance is back there.
Cheryl K — Google review
I remember the food being very good at the old location. I went again on Saturday & had a totally different experience. The food was not good. The shrimp cóctel tasted like watered down tomato sauce. The shrimp also did not taste good. The beans had no flavor. It was missing salt. I never add salt to my food, but none of my kids ate their beans. It was a waste of food. They only liked the rice. I asked for three plain chicken tacos with rice & beans. We got three tacos with shredded cheese. When I asked if they could please change at least one of the tacos, they came back to ask why. I told them it had cheese & I asked for three plain tacos. The only thing that was good were the drinks. We got horchata & Jamaica. Sorry we will not be coming again.

The new location was a bit hard to find at first, but you can't beat the value of this place. Fajitas for 2 and a pitcher of margaritas (all delicious)for a little over $60?!? Sign me up! I love finding a good casual dining spot downtown that fills your tummy but doesn't break the bank. We will definitely be back!

I’m usually a solo diner and a lot of the reason why I sit at the bar is for conversation, but there was no bartender behind the bar for the time I was there. My order was incorrect, but no one was there to tell for a while so I just ate it anyway. I probably flicked away around 10 ants around my plate and one that I actually pinched off of my plate. Do not sit at the bar. The guacamole was good though.

Nestled within the vibrant Motorco Music Hall in Downtown Durham, Parts & Labor is a trendy industrial-chic spot that perfectly marries craft brews and cocktails with an eclectic menu of global street food. This local gem surprises many with its impressive array of plant-based options, making it a haven for vegans and vegetarians alike. Food was solid. Cool tapas style sharing options with Asian fusion flare. Cocktails were great too! Loved the scallion pancake and the wings! The noodles had great flavor too! The eggplant wasn’t too spongy and was very well seasoned. My dad loved the fried peppers. Will definitely go back!

So the atmosphere is awesome, the service is great, it's really clean and the staff is super nice. We only went to the bar and ate, but there's a live music spot attached also but they were having some kind of event and we didn't really have time to inquire. However, the portions. The food is really good, but everything is 'ala carte' so 4 dollars for a slider, 8 if you want two. Then another 4-8 bucks if you want a side and your drink is also another 4ish dollars. The portions just weren't great. BUT, it's a nice change that going to a place with bar food and all the options are healthy, has a ton of vegan friendly options which is also not something you see a lot of places. Like I wouldn't recommend going if your super hungry or you're willing to order a bunch of sides but it's definitely a cute spot
Mackenzie G — Google review
This is a neat spot and was ideal for a quick drink as we hopped around the area. It looks like a former auto shop with big bay doors that can be opened on nice days. They have a projector that plays movies and TV shows and that was cool. The drinks weren't anything fantastic, but I would pop in again.
Kay — Google review
This is bar food - open late at night. Some is even healthy. Very helpful staff. Street parking getting impossible but plenty of small lots. Quick service depending on what you order. Good drinks. Golden road mango beer was light and tasty. Beer battered shrimp very good. Steak pita a bit salty. Churrasco slider tender but small for $10. Kimchi loved by all as was the poutine (Canadian French fries) with Marsala sauce.
Jack P — Google review
I was a bit disappointed with the food experience. When you order something classic like a burger and poutine you expect it to meet the usual standard. Poutine really should come with cheese curds, and a $10 burger shouldn’t feel like a slider. The total came to $24, which felt high given the quality. That said, the ambiance was great, and I appreciated the bartender’s recommendation I went with her suggestion of the burger and poutine. Poutine isn’t made with melted cheese. The recipe is French fries, hot brown gravy, and fresh cheese curds. Curds not melted mozzarella that makes the fries soggy mess.
Reni N — Google review
Pre-show noms. I got the Churrasco slider! Beef tenderloin with chimichurri sauce on a brioche bun. I also have a Mango Cart!

The staff is really nice. The food is so flavourful! The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I do wish there were labels on the condiments so that I know how hot the salsas are. The place is clean and it was a very enjoyable place. I got the Menudo, Birria De Res, and Sweet Iced Tea.

The restaurant was clean and had a nice bar. Plenty of seating. You order at a counter and the food is brought to you quickly. I was not impressed with the food I ordered. The corn tortilla did not seem to be cooked thoroughly. I would try this place again, but order something different.

The restaurant is clean and located inside Brightleaf Square. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. I have never been and heard about the hype from the Sanford location so wanted to check it out. We tried a variety of items to-go and I enjoyed the food. My favorite item was actually the dessert- the apple churro! Get that! We also tried the burrito, chimichurri , tacos and quesabirria. The cantaloupe juice was also very refreshing. They have a bar with salsas and toppings. The food was made fresh and with a smile and I would seriously go back for the churros.

Fonda Lupita has officially become one of our favorite spots! Last week my fiancé and I tried the birria grilled cheese for delivery, and it was so good we had to come in person this week — and it did not disappoint. The birria is packed with flavor, and the consomé is so rich and delicious I could honestly drink it. Our oldest had a quesadilla with rice, and our younger son had the kids quesadilla with rice and beans — both plates were fresh, tasty, and gone in no time. You can taste the love and care in every bite. Whether you’re ordering in or dining at the restaurant, the food is consistently amazing. We’ll definitely be back again (and again)!

The fried chicken is not worth the amount served. The price did not match the amount we got. The South Indian curry was good and spicy however very disappointed with the fried chicken. This photo was maybe after 4 bites of the chicken. They’re all small nugget pieces. Our garlic naan also had no garlic. Should’ve gotten butter so at least something was on it. The masala was also just plain mashed potatoes. No flavors just plain potatoes. The color u see in the pictures is the butter chicken sauce (minus the chicken) they gave us on the side

I had the chettinad curry chicken which came with rice and naan, as well as 2 sides (I had the chickpeas and vegetables). The food was decent and the portion was enough for a $12 lunch combo meal. Also tried the Mango Lassi which was good but perhaps for $5 I was expecting more than a small cup so definitely on the pricier side.

The ambiance is so cute and cozy; you feel as though you walked into your best friend's living room with plenty of counter seating to boot! Everyone that works here is so knowledgeable and friendly and willing to work with you until you find your perfect pour. There's also a small but mighty food menu equipped with charcuterie boards and warm chocolate chip cookies. When I tell you this place is one of my absolute favorites in Durham, believe me! Killer Queen for the win!

Majesty was absolutely fantastic. He was so down to earth, friendly, funny, went out of his way to make sure we had the best wine and time, recommended great charcuterie pairings, and curated the best atmosphere. We will most definitely be back and cannot recommend this place enough if you want a funky, friendly, eclectic wine bar.
Amanda L — Google review
First, excellent name. Second, excellent wine selection. The ladies behind the bar Killer Queen really know their stuff, and they are willing to chat with you at length about their wine selection. They are clearly so passionate about their work, and we love to see it. You can also taste the selection to find the perfect glass for you. The menu is divided between sparkling, rose, orange (YAY!), white, and red, with a helpful legend to decipher body and sweetness. They also have a solid selection of biodynamic wines to choose from! They also have beer, cider, and zero proof options - so it’s an inclusive spot for every palate. Small plates focus on bread, butter, and locally sourced cheese. I mean, what more could you want?! Decor is sparkly, disco-y, and eclectic - my fave. And they have cute napkins (it’s the little things). If you’re in Durham (or the triangle), make sure to check this place out!i

Fun and interesting wine list. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Pleasant chill vibes to hang. Was perfect on a weeknight when it was empty and chill. Almost felt like I was hanging out in my living room.

We had our engagement party here and it was more than we could have ever hoped for! Silvia the owner is absolutely amazing. She kept the wine flowing and personally kept everyone’s glass full. She explained the wines to us and gave great recommendations. The food was also so tasty! We had a charcuterie board, cheese board, pasta, meatballs and they were even able to put a vegan board together for a couple of our friends that are vegan. Now for the space. Their new event space upstairs is absolutely beautiful. No detail was missed. The twinkle lights, candles, vintage seating, everything is so well thought out. They even put out a L & R wood cutout for my fiancé and I. So sweet! We were able to plan the whole event with just a few emails. Since we’re already planning a wedding I really appreciated how easy she made the whole process. We are so thankful for Silvia and everyone at Killer Queen that made our night so special. Can’t wait to have another event here!

Killer Queen is an amazing addition to downtown Durham! I stopped by with a group a 6 and even though it was a Saturday and I didn’t make a reservation, they pushed some tables together and made sure my group had a space to enjoy the evening. The service was topnotch all night. I ordered the roasted hazelnuts and roasted garlic Caesar salad. The food did take awhile to come out because only 1 person was working in the kitchen, which is understandable. The food was delicious!! My group then ordered a charcuterie board and bottles of wine and absolutely everything was fantastic. Killer Queen has such a cozy little environment and it really is the perfect place to grab a glass of wine, have a charcuterie board and relax. They also have some beers and ciders. I’m sure I will become a regular here!

The coolest wine bar - lovely atmosphere, great wine selection, and the music choice was perfect!

Monuts is a bustling establishment in Downtown Durham, founded by Lindsay Moriarty and Rob Gillespie. What started as a donut stand near the Durham Farmers Market has evolved into a popular bakery and cafe serving gourmet donuts, house-baked bagels, sandwiches, coffee, and alcoholic beverages.
Not pictured the amazing Apple cider donut I inhaled. It was warm and the cinnamon flavor was out of this world. Small parking lot but easily accessible free street parking in adjacent neighborhoods. Went on a Friday morning and it was busy but the lines moved fast.

Had brunch here on a Saturday morning after hearing a lot of good reviews. I had the All You Avo Wanted Toast, two types of donuts and a Chai latte. The chai was great but the food and donuts were just okay. The service was good but the person at the counter could be more friendly and smiling. My fav part was definitely the tables outside in the shade.
Ajimon T — Google review
The staff was so welcoming and the establishment is clean and bright. We ordered the chocolate milk, chai chocolate donut, a mocha latte and the rocket fuel burrito. The food is tasty and fresh. Definitely a great breakfast spot!
Isabel S — Google review
This place might be my new favorite breakfast spot! My husband and I decided to try this place and loved everything about it! Everything is made fresh and the taste proves it! We loved their story about paying their employees a living wage. We tried a variety of things today and can’t wait to go back! The quiche was so delicious, definitely one of the best I’ve ever had. We tried many different pastries and enjoyed all of the flavors! My mocha topped it all off. The atmosphere is great and the customer service is too! We can’t wait to come back and bring friends.

Delicious donuts and pastries!! Their cheddar jalapeno bagel was delicious and loved their Turkish eggs and avocado
G E — Google review
The food here is good but I’m just SO fed up with the slow service on take out orders. I ordered a to go order at 8:15 am, knowing it would be packed on a weekend, which is fine. The estimated time for pick up was 9:30. Cool. I get there at 9:30 and the FOOD is ready. It’s 10 am and I still haven’t gotten my coffee. My food is getting cold and I can’t wrap my head around why it takes 1.5 hours to make a coffee? I could have eaten in and left by now! So annoying
Kate T — Google review
Monuts is a Durham staple with delicious donuts and pastries, well made coffees, and teas, and a savory spread to meet any craving! We got a variety of donuts, two bagel, breakfast sandwiches, and some lattes. Everything was delicious. Sometimes the parking can be challenging, and the biggest downside would be that it’s very challenging to get a hot donut! But if you can… Yum!

Monuts is an absolute gem in Old West Durham! The cafe is a perfect destination for breakfast, brunch, and lunch; and you can feel good supporting a local business that pays their employees a living wage! The food at Monuts is incredible with a focus on delicious baked goods, inventive sandwiches, and fantastic coffee drinks. Their menu changes on a seasonal and sometimes weekly basis, so it's easy to keep coming back to see what their current offerings are. In addition to sandwiches, you can also enjoy lunch items such as soup, salads, and quiche! Everything is made from scratch, in-house, no pre-made mixes here. if you're visiting on the weekend, come early and be prepared for the crowd, this place gets packed!

Burrito restaurant
Mexican restaurant
Restaurant
Cosmic Cantina, located at the corner of Ninth St. and Perry St. in Durham, is a hidden gem known for its organic Mexican cuisine served in a casual and cozy setting with very late-night hours. Despite being a bit difficult to find, this quirky spot offers delicious burritos and other Mexican favorites that are well worth the search. The menu features cheap yet generous portions of burritos, along with beer, margaritas, chips & queso.
The food was great, especially for late night. Service was great, but make sure you check that receipt because I was about to put cash in the tip jar before I noticed that they had already charged me $5.15 for a tip without saying anything or posting about automatic tips charges (definitely would've given them extra cash but I would also like to be notified of what I am being charged..so I decided against it for that reason) My family and friends will definitely be back next time we're in town. The outside patio is cute, too 😍
Bridget J — Google review
First time trying this place and was so cool! Loved how it feels like a whole in the wall and gives Austin TX vibes. Loved how much history is still here in the space. We got the asada nachos and a marg! So good and that marg was fire! Thanks for a fun lunch! Will definitely drive back up here to try other things.

One of the best; hell if not the best Mexican restaurant I ever had. Wife told me this place is a Durham staple; o and never again will yall ever have a Chipotle burrito, these things bigger than a… 😩😮‍💨🌯
Donovan T — Google review
A walk up memory lane. I came here as a high school student 20 years ago and am thankful this late night staple is still going strong today. They have delicious Mexican classic favorites and drinks in a fun, casual setting with music and an outdoor rooftop area. A Durham favorite you can’t miss!
Chelsea F — Google review
Very cool burrito joint! Not being a local this was a little hard to find. Thanks to other reviewers showing the stairs. The door is street level and then immediate stairs up tp the second floor. The business upstairs and to the right. In town for work and stumbled upon this place being near my hotel. So glad I stopped. I'm from South Chicago so latin food is no stranger to me. I travel a LOT for work and always get Mexican once a week wherever I'm at. THIS IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST CHICKEN BURRITO I HAVE EVER HAD! You can smell the place while you're walking up the stairs. Upon entering you're hit with a wave of delicious aromas. They had so many choices it was difficult to choose. I ultimately choose the deluxe chicken burrito. Every item in this thing was perfect. Salsa and guacamole were incredible. I'm here for a week and am planning on stopping twice more before I leave. It's THAT good.
Matthew W — Google review
I ordered burritos, but my order was messed up badly. There was too much avocado and a lot of sour cream, which I did not request and I don’t like neither. Because of this, I wasn’t able to enjoy my burrito for dinner. The service was very disappointing, and unfortunately, this is the second time it has happened. I hope this mistake doesn’t occur again in the future.
Jael X — Google review
Way too expensive for what it is and not very good. The prices on the most recent menu pictures are not up to date fya if you’re ordering pick up. Ordered a giant steak chimichanga - $25. Almost no meat in the chimichanga, it was all rice and beans. I probably count the number of small pieces of meat inside. Most of the cheese on top was also not melted Queso - $9. Chicken quesadilla - $9. Cheese on quesadilla was not melted and still whole. It was more like a plain chicken taco with some unmelted cheese inside.

Bull City Ciderworks Durham is a popular spot known for its hard cider taproom featuring seasonal brews and a charming rustic, industrial-chic decor with outdoor seating. The establishment has been a staple in the city for over 20 years, offering delightful breakfast, brunch, and lunch options. Their gluten-free hard ciders are crafted from 100 percent apple juice without any high fructose corn syrup.
I love cider and I appreciate Bull City Ciderworks. Love to grab dinner from the visiting food truck and hang with friends, or play trivia. Dogs welcome!
Chelle C — Google review
We were there for a dog adoption event and I decided to try one of their ciders. I got the Tart Cherry Cider and it was really good. The location is great, but the parking is somewhat challenging to find. I love that they had a lot of ciders, since I have Celiac and am gluten free. But I would love it if some of their beer offerings were also gluten free/gluten reduced. The space itself is awesome. They have a large game room with a pool table and arcade games, that one of my teenagers really gravitated towards. And the dog adoption event with Freedom Ride Rescue was great! So many lovable dog options, from young to old, and the fosters were very knowledgeable about the temperament and backstory of each one. Overall, a great experience!
Shanah B — Google review
Really awesome cidery! All the ciders we tried tasted great and weren't overly sweet. Staff was really friendly and helpful in walking us through the menu. And I always appreciate a spot that has a bunch of board games available. For beer drinkers, there are several local taps available as well ... and while we were there, a food truck was on site (and whatever they were making smelled delicious).
Melissa W — Google review
Best cider I've had in the triangle, maybe anywhere. Lots of great options and interesting flavors that aren't just "apple," and their flagship "normal" cider is also one of the best.
Ryan E — Google review
Love this place! They have a great selection of ciders. I am not typically a huge cider person but they have ones that I like! They have unique flavors versus other places that just have like three fruit flavors. We got flights which is always tons of fun! They also had board games so we were able to play and hang out while we drank. There’s a pretty good amount of seating. We went on a Sunday so it was dead but I still think most times there would be enough seating.
Alex D — Google review
The night was spooky, October 31, 2022. The rain soaked parking lot, though it was rather elusive, served as a starting place for a night of tasty terror. We started with a freaky flight and loved the honey cider best, a bloody good treat it was. Would most certainly come back.
Mason E — Google review
Great place to grab a beer! The have up to 16 different ciders to choose from, with guest beers featured as well. Staff is wonderful and encourages you to sample the different beers and even mix ciders. Sounds crazy I know but trust me, they're delicious. Outside seating area for the nice sunny days, board games you can bring to your table, and tours coming soon! Highly recommended
