Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Guimarães Castle, perched on a hilltop, is a Romanesque fortress believed to be the birthplace of Afonso Henriques. Dating back to the 10th century, it's an iconic landmark in the city and one of Portugal's Seven Wonders. Originally built in wood and mud for protection against Arab attacks, it was later reconstructed in stone. The castle holds historical significance as the birth site of Portugal's first king.
This 10th century castle of the first king of Portugal is a piece of architectural marvel. It is spread over a vast land with a palace and a church just outside the castle. The castle itself is not that big, but is well preserved and maintained. The entrance gate is big and it has stairs to climb to the top of the boundary wall and one can explore the entire castle. They also have a 3D show happening at the top of the castle. This is worth a visit.

Imposing building that can be seen from all around. The original structure is largely still fully intact, however they're is no interior to look at, side from the room where the virtual reality experience is held. The wall walk is essentially all there is, however yes still very impressive, with stunning views all around, including it the palace nearby.

Guimarães Castle is the impressive ruin of an ancient fortress, believed to have been one of the first residences of Portugal’s early kings. This stronghold was originally built to defend the surrounding lands and played a key role in the country’s formation. Today, visitors can explore the remaining towers and walls while enjoying a fascinating VR experience that recreates what the castle looked like centuries ago. It’s a great way to imagine its former glory and understand its importance in Portuguese history. Definitely worth a visit — especially if you’re interested in medieval architecture or the origins of Portugal itself.
Murillo P — Google review
Nice Castle, short walk around. Lots of history here. 360 virtual tour was cool. If your going to visit, either buy your tickets online or visit the ducal palace first and buy Combo tickets there first.
Theo K — Google review
Interesting ruined Castle with only the stone walls are left. It is a five dollars ticket to get I to the castle and you can purchase it online with some difficulties or you can walk down to the near by art museum and purchase the ticket, although the line for it could be long.
Frank C — Google review
The castle of Guimarães is a must-see and truly impressive, full of history and atmosphere. However, the online ticketing system is a real nightmare: the process is unnecessarily complicated and PayPal is not even available. It’s a shame that visitors have to go through such a complex journey just to get in. On top of that, the central tower was closed without any prior notice, which was disappointing. Overall, the monument itself is absolutely worth it, but the management of the visitor experience could and should be much better.
Claudio C — Google review
Guimarães Castle is an absolute must-see! As the birthplace of Portugal's first king, it's steeped in history and incredibly evocative. Climbing the keep offers amazing views of Guimarães, and exploring the battlements gives a real sense of its strategic past. While not heavily furnished, the sheer presence and historical significance of the castle are powerful. A truly iconic landmark and a highlight of my visit.
Carly — Google review
Bit of a hassle to book tickets (either online or in the palace down) but once in all good. It's a quick visit, do not expect your visit to last longer than 45mins-1hr. Also did the VR thing, with an upcharge of €6 but good enough.

Largo da Oliveira, also known as Olive Tree Square, is a charming cobbled square in Guimaraes surrounded by historic buildings and a striking Gothic church. The square gets its name from an ancient olive tree that once stood in front of the Church of Lady of Oliveira. Legend has it that the tree miraculously flourished in 1342 after a trader placed a Norman cross nearby.

Ancient Ruins
Citânia de Briteiros is an intriguing archaeological site located near Braga, Portugal. It dates back to the Iron Age, with ruins discovered in 1875 and believed to have been inhabited from around 300 BC to 300 AD. The site features over 150 stone huts, with two of them restored to showcase their original appearance.
Very nice picturesque place , amazing views. make sure to wear good shoes, no heels, entrance is about 5€ , theres a small parking downstairs then you go up to the entrance by walking! It takes about 1-1.5h to see everything depending on how fast you go and stop. Medium size complex. Worth every penny.
Cedric G — Google review
Total hidden gem! Ruins of Celtic village with beautiful hilltop location. Leave the crowds behind, set your imagination free and enjoy. There is tree cover so hot day visit probably tolerable. Snack bar and toilets on site. Uneven footing.
Mark J — Google review
Archeological site on a hilltop. Closed from 1230-1400. 3€ admission. Parking near road, 2 min walk uphill to entrance. Sturdy shoes needed, difficult uneven paths. Map was a bit limited in information.
Mike L — Google review
This Iron Age settlement’s circular huts have drainage systems superior to modern villas. Guides point out grooves where door pivots wore through granite. Wild herbs growing among ruins match those in archaeological pollen samples. Beautiful place, worth a visit.
Arman K — Google review
very peaceful place, and fascinating to visit this ancient city! they give you a brochure with a map and explanations for all the different sights, it is very well done and informative, we learnt a lot!

Pre-roman settlement, one of the largest in Europe. It's out of the typical tourist path, so we have this place all for ourselves. It's self-guided. Maps are provided in several different languages.
Pavel M — Google review
I found this site magical! The setting is a woodland on the top of a hill with valley and mountain views between the trees. The archaeology is incredible, with family clusters of round and rectangular buildings inhabited and developed over several centuries. The pathways, with their gutters, are an unexpected delight. We took around 2hrs- and we only left then because they closed for lunch. Ice creams and drinks are available on site and easy parking is on the main road pull in opposite the entrance.
Philip S — Google review
Beautiful site showing one of the most complex Castro settlements right in the culture’s heartland. This settlement is unique in having a road grid that allows you to literally walk the same paths of these Iron Age people. Furthermore, there is an almost complete bath house that is a must see. The reconstructions are quite out dated, however, they still offer a vague idea of what the round houses may have looked like. You are handed a map with some basic information, however, I’d definitively recommend buying the €5 visitor guide for more in depth information as it will enhance the visit significantly. We were based in Braga for this bus and tried to get the number 13. However, a local told us it wasn’t running from the stop it was scheduled to run (there was no information about this at the stop, and this is the stop the tourist info centre told us to go to the day before) from and took us to Central I where it was running from for that day. This meant we missed the 8.30 bus and so decided to get a bolt to the site for ~€13 which was about 20 mins. We then walked 30 mins to the Castro Culture Museum in Briteiros. We then took a bus to Guimarães following Google Maps’ instructions which were accurate (it was not delayed about 15 mins).

Nestled amidst lush forests and walking trails, the Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo is a modest medieval Romanesque church made of granite. Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo is a small, historic church with a simple charm. Its stone structure and setting near the castle add to its appeal. While it’s not very elaborate or richly decorated inside, it holds historical significance and is worth a quick visit if you're already exploring the area.

Small chapel about two minute walk from either the castle or the palace. Inside there is a tomb. The significance of this chapel was its claim to the baptism of the king Alfonzo Henriques, Who is the first king started Portugal. There’s no admission to see the chapel. However the chapel is only open from 9:30 to 5 PM every day for viewing inside. Otherwise you can always view the external construction of the chapel anytime of the day.

So old and authentic. Christian chapel, with Romanesque architecture, dating back to the early 13th century, where the first king of Portugal, Afonso, is believed to have been baptized. Simple stone construction, with floors paved with old tombstones, with a few old stone artifacts and an air of the poor and harsh Middle Ages. Learn more about it before visiting. worth it.

Artur V — Google review
The Chapel of Saint Michael (Capela de São Miguel) in Guimarães is a profoundly unique and historically foundational landmark, celebrated primarily for its direct association with the birth of the Portuguese nation. Its most distinctive feature is its traditional role as the baptismal site of Afonso Henriques, who would become the first King of Portugal, earning it the unofficial title of the "Baptistery of the Nation." This direct link to the very beginnings of Portugal's monarchy makes it unparalleled. Architecturally, the chapel is characterized by its simple, austere Romanesque style, constructed from rough-hewn stone, reflecting its very early medieval origins (likely 12th century). Its small, unadorned interior, including a modest font, emphasizes its ancient purpose and humble beginnings, standing in stark contrast to later, more ornate religious buildings. Its close proximity to Guimarães Castle further underscores its deep historical connection to the nascent Portuguese kingdom.

The Sanctuary of Penha, inaugurated in 1947, is situated at the highest point of Guimaraes, Monte da Penha. Designed by Jose Marques da Silva, it offers stunning city views and is surrounded by walking trails in a 60-hectare park. The site includes a statue of Pope Pius IX and a viewpoint with panoramic vistas extending to the sea on clear days. This UNESCO World Heritage site also features shops and restaurants near the main parking area.
Great place to visit, seems very popular on a weekend for families taking food and drinks. On the Saturday we went there was lots of activities for kids near the resteraunts and food stalls. There is a funicular that you can use in either direction. Lots of areas to walk and explore once youre at the top. We took the train from Porto to Guimaraes, they only cost around €7 each way and takes around 1 hour.

The church is very beautiful inside and out. The garden is phenomenal and the peace is unparalleled. It has a beautiful view of the city and everything is free. You don't need to pay 10 euros to go up by cable car because you can park right next to it, and both the parking lot and the church are free.

Epic place! It's like in a dream ✨️ I recommend all the people who come to the city come up to the mountain ⛰️ Music in church ⛪️ makes goosebumps so amazing atmosphere i loved to be there!
Vineta T — Google review
Beautiful surroundings. I would recommend to wear comfortable shoes when visiting the place to enjoy it at the fullest you will need to walk around and explore the incredible nature. You can hike up to the hills and within 1-1:30h, depending on your pace, you will reach out the top, or you can use the cable car (even if you are by bike, you still can carry it on the cable car). There are a few options of places to have a meal or a snack when visiting the place but not many. Just be aware that depending on the time you will visit, the restaurants might be closed.

The Museu de Alberto Sampaio is a captivating museum housed in the Romanesque cloister of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. It features an extensive collection of religious art, sculptures, and relics from various churches and convents in the Guimaraes region. The museum showcases objects dating from the 13th to the 18th century, including King Joao's coat of mail from the Battle of Aljubarrota and remarkable wooden statues.
Interesting museum Among the several museums of the city, the Alberto Sampaio museum is the one that stands out. Founded in 1928, it opened its doors to the public in 1931; it is located in the old site of the Canon the Collegiate of Our Lady of Oliveira (Cabido da Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in Portuguese). It contains a rich collection of pieces from the 14th, 15th and 16th century, including one rare vest that was used by the king John I.

Lovely building, I really appreciated being able to sit down in the shade... Place was very empty (which was nice) and offered a respite from both the heat and the crowds. Staff were very kind, especially the lady at the front desk who was very funny and charming. I dropped my wallet and didn't even notice, but she stopped me as I was leaving to let me know the staff had picked it up. THANK YOU!!!!!! ❤️🫶🇸🇪 All in all a good experience, especially if you're by yourself and want to get away for a bit.

5 euro for The musuem and the Ducal Palace. The staffs are very nice, kind and welcoming the moment i got inside. I came at opening time so I have the musuem for myself. 1 lady accompanied me to see where the exhibits are. She was accommodating even though she doesn't speak fluent English but she tried her best to tell me the importance of every room. A lot of artifacts are antiques and of great historical values. Toilet is clean, they even let me leave my bag. They gave me all smiles and goodbyes when I left.

Definitely a must visit. It's a very beautiful museum. Actually it's gorgeous! It's not too big and doesn't take hours to visit. Beautiful art to see!
Jennifer M — Google review
Excellent museum with very great explanations and abundance of arts from 16 to 18 century on display. I advise purchase a combo ticket for 8€ which includes access to castle, the Palace, and this museum. The museum has a large collection. The staff was very nice as well as when I was not sure of the explanation they were patient enough to explain them to me.
Lynne L — Google review
For me, one of the best things to see in Guimarães, although the whole city is gorgeous. The entrance ticket for students is only 1,50€ and gives you access to a beautiful collection liturgical objects, statues, the true coat worn by Alfonso Henriquez and much more. But the ticket would be worth paying even ONLY FOR THE CLOISTER! It is amazing, with tress, columns and a very antique and surreal atmosphere. Give yourself a treat and visit this place.
Michele C — Google review
An interesting museum to visit particularly if your like religious artifacts and art work. However, there is a temporary exhibition of textiles at present which l really liked, but no photography in this area. The staff are extremely helpful, friendly and informative.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira (Church of Our Lady of the Olive Tree) in Guimarães is a deeply unique and historically resonant landmark, central to the city's identity as the birthplace of Portugal. What sets it apart is its Gothic architecture and its profound connection to King John I and the Battle of Aljubarrota, as he ordered its reconstruction in the late 14th century as a vow of thanks for the Portuguese victory. This makes it a significant symbol of Portuguese independence. Adding to its distinctiveness is the "Legend of the Olive Tree", which gives the church its name. According to tradition, an ancient olive tree in front of the church miraculously revived after being cut down, leading to the placement of the Padrão do Salado (a Gothic shrine commemorating the Battle of Salado) right outside its doors. The church's interior features notable 18th-century altarpieces and a revered image of Our Lady of Oliveira. This blend of historical significance, architectural evolution, and local legend makes Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira a truly singular site.

A Cozinha por António Loureiro is a Michelin one-star restaurant located in the old town of Braganca. Chef Antonio Loureiro's culinary approach combines creativity and tradition, using local and seasonal ingredients to create sophisticated yet authentic dishes. The tasting menu highlights the rich produce of the Tras-os-Montes region, offering a dining experience that celebrates Portuguese flavors.
Everything was exquisite, we genuinely enjoyed our lunch. Antonio and the entire team were incredibly attentive and delivered exceptional service throughout. A truly delightful experience!

We had a diner for 6 people at A Cozinha in Guimarães. This was a memorable, relaxed, evening to experience an exquisite trip through revisited portuguese flavors and food products. Vegetables, fruits, fish and meat well known of the north of Portugal were the basis for the complete meal. Tasty and visually appealing starters were the successful prelude for excellent starters and main courses. Finally, we still had a small space left to enjoy some shared desserts. The wines list offered a large choice and we were very happy with a Dona Francisca (Douro, vinhas velhas). The restaurant room space was very agreable and the attentive service was enjoyable. Of note, this was a very young team in the kitchen and doing the table service under the supervision of Antonio Loureiro. Globally, this was my best food experience in a one star Michelin restaurant. There might be some bias here as I am portuguese charmed by flavors of my youth, but I honestly loved it. I warmly recommend a visit to A Cozinha to enjoy the excellence of portuguese tastes. This restaurant combined with the vibrant atmosphere of Guimarães packed on its well preserved historical center is certainly worth the trip.

Outstanding quality! I’ve been here more than ten times over the years, and every visit has been memorable. The chef is truly exceptional, the dishes are beautifully crafted, and the desserts are always creative and seasonal. Prices are very fair for the level of fine dining offered an absolute must-visit in Guimarães.

Excellent dining experience, very deserving of its Michelin star. Service was incredibly friendly and attentive and personal. Beautifully designed space and nice little touches that felt both cozy and modern without feeling stuffy or overly formal. And the welcome glass of sparkling wine was a very nice touch. Well-crafted dishes with creative flavour compositions and presentation, and perfectly paired wines. Perfectly cooked proteins. Easily one of the top 3 Michelin starred restaurants in Portugal in my opinion. I hope to eat here again one day!

Exceptionally good food. Great service that matched the food. Staff and food made it a memorable meal. We had the tasting menu. Very well accomplished. The wines were very good and the pairing worked well. They fully deserve their michellin star. We went there for my birthday and I had told my partner not to tell them. He had told them it was for a special occasion and a small delicious mini cake was produced. There was no need, but it was a really lovely gesture from them. 5 stars and a place to return.

Our second time here and it doesn't disappoint. Innovative, modern cooking with a twist on some traditional dishes. Excellent service and very knowledgeable, friendly staff. Menu changes seasonally so we'll be back after Feb! Worth the Michelin recommendation.
Grace G — Google review
Having dined at several Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, I was very much looking forward to experiencing this one in Guimarães. The food was beautifully balanced and flavorful, with each dish explained with care and passion. A special touch was the extra dessert I received for my birthday, a kind and thoughtful gesture that made the evening feel more personal. That said, the service did not always reflect the standard I’ve come to expect at this level. Water glasses were often left empty, the table was not consistently reset, and we waited quite a while for the bill after asking. As the restaurant became busier, the attentiveness seemed to decline. The culinary side of the evening shows real talent, and with more consistency and proactivity in service, this restaurant has the potential to deliver the full Michelin-level experience.

Located in a medieval square, Padrão do Salado is a Gothic monument with four arches and a cross that commemorates a victorious battle. It was commissioned by King D. Afonso IV in 1342 to honor the Portuguese involvement in the Battle of Salado. The monument stands in Largo da Oliveira, surrounded by historic buildings such as those in Praca de Sao Tiago and Rua de Santa Maria, which retain their medieval architecture.
The Padrão do Salado in Guimarães is standing as a testament to a pivotal moment in Portuguese history. What sets it apart is its direct connection to the Battle of Salado (1340), where a joint Castilian and Portuguese army decisively defeated the Marinid Moors. The monument was erected by King Afonso IV of Portugal as an act of thanksgiving for this victory, making it a rare example of a 14th-century commemorative pillar. Its most distinctive features include its Gothic architectural style, characterized by a slender column topped with a cross and various sculptural elements, including images of the Virgin Mary and the Portuguese royal arms. The simplicity and elegance of its design, combined with its profound historical narrative, make it a unique symbol of Portugal's medieval military triumphs and religious devotion, holding a special place in the nation's collective memory.

This gothic monument is there at the middle of the street near the bustling market and is magnificent. The architecture is marvelous and it shows the typical artwork of the people of those times with quite a intricate designs. There is a cross at the center of it.
Akash B — Google review
Padrão do Salado, in Gothic style...Underneath the pattern is the Norman cross offered by the Guimarães merchant Pero Esteves, residing in Lisbon. The cross, made of limestone, was initially gilded and polychromed. It has on one face Christ Crucified and on the other the Virgin. At the base, it presents images of saints. It commemorates, according to tradition, the Battle of Salado fought in 1340 against the Moors in southern Spain. In this battle, Alfonso XI of Castile requested support from the Portuguese king Alfonso IV.

Nestled in the heart of a picturesque landscape, 1720 Quinta da Cancela is a charming country house and vineyard that has been lovingly maintained by six generations of the same family. This historic property boasts atmospheric interiors adorned with beamed ceilings, exposed stonework, and delightful antiques that transport you back in time. Guests can indulge in regional cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients while enjoying the serene surroundings, complete with a granite pool for relaxation.
We experience top of the line service during our stay at Quinta da Cancela. From the vineyards to the room, the wines, the breakfast and diner, they exceeded our expectations. Thank You Arthur for such a good service and personal attention. I can’t wait to go there again I strongly recommend Quinta da Cancela to couples that want to relax or families that want to have an extraordinary wine experience. Thanks a lot from Alex Masvinowine

We stayed at 'Arthur's place' for 2 nights in June. What a delightful homely stay we had. This is a family home/vineyard and Arthur and his wife have added wonderful touches to ensure their guests have a 5 star experience. The rooms in the old winery with there thick stone walls provided a perfect temperature for a great nights sleep. The spring water pool and garden were beautiful; situated beside the vines with shade from the fruit trees. We were spoilt with homemade lemonade which Arthur brought to us beside the pool. We had a superb meal, accompanied by 1720 wines which we shared with two other lovely guests. We finished our evening with a drink on the amazing verandah overlooking the vines. We ate in a local restaurant the second night. Arthur was only too happy to reserve a table and drop us at the door AND arrange a local taxi back for us. What more could you ask for. Looking forward to returning again to experience this hidden gem.

We organized corporate dinner with wine tasting at Quinta da Cancela. It’s a perfect place for it - old house with its atmosphere, but renovated and comfortable. You can see how they produce wine and have an excursion from Arthur (owner of the Quinta). Rain spoiled our plans, but Arthur helped us so much to create plan B and organize photo zone, tables and musicians. Food was very tasty and served like in a good restaurant. Thanks Arthur for his professional approach, responsiveness, and delicious wine/food

We had a wonderful stay here. When we arrived the owner Arthur welcomed us and showed us our cottage and gave us a lot of information about the Quinta, the vineyard and the family. It was a pleasure to listen to him. He has a clear vision to develop and maintain the Quinta for the next generation. The original property dates back to 1720. Our cottage was lovingly furnished and cozy. The garden offers many sitting possibilities and is very nicely laid out. The breakfast was very varied and good. One veneing we had a very delicious dinner and we enjoyed the selfmade vine. The Quinta is a clear recommendation from our site.

I come to Braga once a quarter. This time, I was not able to stay in the hotel I normally did and ended up booking at Quinta da Cancela. Suffice to say that going forward, whenever I come to Braga, I will stay here. Arthur could not have been more friendly, the room was perfect -- clean, comfortable and nice, and the property itself is beautiful. Would highly recommend, and I'm looking forward to my next stay in a couple of months.

We stayed for 2 nights with friends and kids at Quinta da Cancela 1720 and had such a fantastic experience. The location is amazing, a charmful traditional property with an amazing wineyard, park, swimming pool and stunning view on the Vinho Verde hills. Artur and his family are very tasteful hosts, who took great care of us and made sure we were feeling like at home. In particular we liked the tour of the property with all explanations, the wine tasting with details from the winemaker, and the traditional meal served at night in the charmful dining room. I would recommend this Quinta, either for a stay in one of the suites or in a camper van the park is also very suitable for that! Thank you so much again Artur

Taberna Trovador is a charming and laid-back bar in Guimaraes, offering an old-fashioned ambiance and outdoor seating. Located near the Public Garden of Alameda, it has become one of the city's top dining spots. The restaurant has a rich history but was recently renovated by the former owner's son, maintaining its traditional Portuguese tavern concept with authentic cuisine and occasional live music.
I love this place! It’s a hidden gem with setting inside and outside. The food is amazing with a lot of tapes on the menu. The service was great with very nice servers. If you are in the area try this restaurant out it will be a great experience.

We went 2x to this restaurant. The first time we didn't book but the waiter said that we could have free a table for just 50 min. All good, because we only wanted to have a quick bite! It was a fast and efficient service. Everything was great so we went for a second time. This time i did a last minute booking. The host said on the phone that they only had free tables outside... The weather was good, so no problem. We arrived at the restaurant and said to the waiter that we had made a reservation and he put us at random table outside. Later the host/manager came to our table and asked if we had a reservation. We confirmed that we had and he asked us if we didn't mind changing tables, bc they had big group coming and they needed the table we were at. We didn't mind, so we moved! No big group showed up the entire time we were there! Then we made our request, which included roasted chorizo and bread. The waiter brought the roasted chorizo and it was disapointing bc i thought it was going to be roasted at the table. The waiter explained that it was prohibited, even thought i saw being done inside the restaurant on a table next to our the first we were there. The chorizo was dry and burnt... and the bread was missing in action. I also asked for some ketchup and mayo for the french fries... The waiter said the they didn't have on the restaurant, even thought we asked for the same thing on the first time and got it! The rest of the food was just OK... Going back to the restaurant for the second time was a huge letdown... The place has clearly consistency issues!

Absolutely 10/10 experience! All the dishes we tried were delicious, I just wish I had more space in my stomach to keep on eating. Portions are small enough to be shared around the table easily, flavorful and delicious. The braised pork cheeks especially were to die for. We showed up when the restaurant just opened for service and we were lucky enough to find a table but I would recommend reserving beforehand.

On our one day trip to Guimarães, we looked for a place to have lunch. We were lucky to this hidden plan. It was fully packed inside. We sat outside. They have limiter seating though. The staff were very nice and friendly. Although with difficulties in language, we managed to make it work. We ordered tomato salad, sardines, octopus, bacalhau, and bacalhau cake. The food was extremely good except for one dish, which was the fried bacalhau. It was chewy and salty. I did not give the feedback on this to the staff because we were in a hurry at the end. It is a busy place, which probably explains that service was slow.

I am grateful to Taberna Trovador for making me discover some local specialties, such as chicken gizzards and braised pork cheeks. I also had onions with wine (what a dish!) and a wonderful chorizo pate, smoked and slightly tangy. The atmosphere is rustic but also elegant and the service impeccable. This place is about great food and getting to know the traditions of Guimarães. Thank you.

Tomate soup with rice was so comforting especially in a rainy day. Veal kebab was so tender. Gizzard was a rare find to me. Sausage was salty itself but good when paired with the tomato soup. I like their small portions so I can try more dishes. Note credit card is not accepted.

Contemporary cuisine in tapas style. Great foods we had, shrimp tacos and tuna with mango ceviche and fresh figs with blue cheese. All made in house. A few choices of pintxos finger foods that were amazing. A must try. Check for hours to avoid disappointment. Family business

Good food, not great. The portions seemed a touch small compared to other gastropubs in the area. Good prices though. I tried the Mushroom and mixed veggies omelet... Pretty tasty. Almost more like an egg pizza than a traditional omelet. And since that didn't fill me up, I ordered a plate of nachos. Very good taste, but again the portion seemed small. I wonder if the idea is more of a bar than a gastropub, but either way, it was good. I tried THEIR in house IPA... very good, just a pretty small cup for 3€...but all in all... A good little place to visit!

There is very little if any information shared about the castle, within the castle. Paying admission only gets you access to the castle's central yard and a walkway around the castle walls. No access to the central tower or turrets. One corner tower is open as a coffee and snack room, and one has a VR experience that is an additional 6 euros. Learned more from the Wikipedia article than by visiting the castle. There was also a surprising amount of litter in and around the castle, and some Styrofoam blocks repairing holes in the walls. Id like to see a pay to access site put a little more effort into upkeep.

A C18th palace originally owned by Count Arrichela and visited by Queen D.Maria 11 in 1852. In later years it was sold on to the railway manager, the Jordão family and then Cămara Municipal of Guimarães. Today it is a cultural centre used by artists, musicians, dancers and houses exhibitions. The grounds/gardens which are at 3 levels make this an even more appealing place to visit.

Nestled near Largo do Toural, the "Aqui Nasceu Portugal" sign stands proudly on one of the ancient towers that form part of Guimaraes' historic wall. This charming town is steeped in rich history, being recognized as the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king.
What a surprise! Tucked away on a tiny sidestreet (Rua do Anjo, leading off Rua Dr Avelino Germano) is the VERY recently restored Torre Da Alfandega. Only opened on August 2024, most online guides don't mention it. Fantastic internal access through a set of easy stairs or a modern lift, you are treated to a beautiful view of the city. Internal walls have been sympathetically restored. The attendant was DELIGHTFUL.  He showed us to the stairs and explained that admission is FREE! There’s not much left in Portugal that is free, so ENJOY!

Guimarães has a significant historical importance due to the role it played in the foundation of Portugal. The city is often referred to as the "birthplace of Portugal" or "the cradle city" (Cidade Berço in Portuguese) because it is widely believed that Portugal's first King, Afonso Henriques, was born there, and also due to the fact that the Battle of São Mamede – which is considered the seminal event for the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal – was fought in the vicinity of the city.[2]
Mark P — Google review
Here in 1128 some of the main political and military events took place, which would lead to independence and the birth of a new Nation. The city of Guimarães is historically associated with the foundation of Portuguese nationality and identity. For this reason, it is inscribed in one of the towers of the old city wall "Here was born Portugal", a historical and cultural reference for national residents and visitors.
Dário S — Google review
It is a wall with the words Aqui Nasceu Portugal written high up. The wall looks like either the battlements of a castle or possibly a former city wall. The wall could be more modern than either. The important point is that Portugal was born here in Guimaraes because it was the first capital of Portugal and the birthplace of King Afonso Henriques in 1112 and he vanquished The Moors in 1139 at the battle of Ourique, after which he was proclaimed King of Portugal by his troops.

Cultural center
Largo da Oliveira, also known as the Square of the Olive Tree, is a cultural focal point in Guimaraes. It is home to the beautiful church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, constructed in 1387, and the unique monument Padrao do Salado. The square features medieval buildings and a gothic shrine built to commemorate the battle of Salado in 1339.
(Translated by Google) Largo da Oliveira, located in the historic center of Guimarães, is one of the most emblematic and charming squares in the city, full of history and medieval charm. The square takes its name from a centuries-old olive tree that once stood there and symbolizes the identity of the place. Surrounded by historic buildings, Largo da Oliveira is marked by some of the city's main monuments: - Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira: a Gothic church built in the 14th century, with an impressive Manueline portal and great historical and religious relevance. - Padrão do Salado: a Gothic monument erected in the 14th century to commemorate the Battle of Salado, consisting of an ogival arch and a cross in the center. - Old City Hall: a medieval building that stands out for its arcade, where commercial and administrative activities were carried out. With its terraces, typical architecture and unique atmosphere, Largo da Oliveira is a meeting point for both residents and visitors, being an ideal place to appreciate the historical beauty of Guimarães and experience the authenticity of the city.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful square next to the cathedral, the center of Guimaraes, where the city developed. It's full of restaurants where you can eat. (Original) Bonita plaza junto a la catedral desde donde se desarrolló la ciudad de Guimaraes. Está llena de restaurantes para poder comer.

(Translated by Google) On our way to the Castle of the Dukes, we discovered Largo da Oliveira, one of the most charming squares in Guimarães. In addition to a wide choice of restaurant terraces, there are interesting monuments on the square. With my friend, we visited the church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. Right next door, a Gothic monument, the Padrão do Salado commemorates a victory of the Portuguese royalty over the Moors. An olive tree was also planted in the square as if to pay homage to the century-old tree that gave its name to Largo da Oliveira.

(Translated by Google) Time of visit: first half of April 2025. The Olive Tree Square (Largo da Oliveira) owes its name to the centuries-old olive tree planted in the same place. This square today, surrounded by colorful houses typical of the north of Portugal, was the ideal starting point (and ending point) for our walking tour of the city streets. However, the square itself has a number of interesting objects to explore: on the east side there is a Gothic shrine commemorating the Battle of Salado, next to it is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Oliveira, on the north side of the square is the medieval building of the former town hall. Lots of challenging stuff for the interested visitor. (Original) Vreme posete: prva polovina aprila 2025. god.

(Translated by Google) Like much of Guimarães's inner city, everything feels like a theme park for and by tourists: people singing for change, noisy tourists, etc. It's understandable that there are businesses for tourism, of course, but when it's everything, it gives a sense of unreality, of a cardboard cutout.

(Translated by Google) A must-see tourist spot for anyone visiting Guimarães. Largo da Oliveira takes its name from a centuries-old olive tree planted in the same place. But in the square itself, on the eastern side, a Gothic building built during the reign of D. Afonso IV commemorates the Battle of Salado, where the Portuguese and Spanish defeated the forces of the Moorish kingdom of Granada in 1340. To the north, we also have the medieval building of the old Town Hall. And right next door, we have the Alberto Sampaio Museum, with a remarkable collection of medieval and Renaissance silverware. The Church of Nossa Senhora de Oliveira is the first Gothic building built in Minho.

Packed with restaurants, it's an excellent place to share with tourists and locals. Dinner is busier, especially during the warmer months (the cool evening hours). Local Portuguese cuisine is served. There are different types of restaurants and menus to choose from.
