Lanternes Des Morts, also known as the Lantern of the Dead, are 12th-century conical towers found in Sarlat, France. These unique structures were traditionally associated with nearby cemeteries and are shrouded in mystery regarding their original purpose. The Lanterne des Morts in Sarlat is a particularly unusual architectural sight, located near Cathedrale St Sacerdos.
Lovely building, unique in France.

Special place. Lovely place to watch the hot air balloon's . We were lucky enough to get it all to ourselves several times. Very pleasant and peaceful.

Beautiful building, serene setting. Within easy walking distance for the ancient downtown area.

(Translated by Google) Set back from the main street, at the back of the cathedral, you discover somewhat by chance this magnificent little building, the "Lantern of the Dead". Shaped like a bullet, it reveals itself to you by chance. Small chapel, it is located not far from a necropolis, located behind the cathedral. Enter, and you will find yourself inside a cocoon... interface between the world here below and the world beyond. A must see, because of its shape, its purpose, and don't forget to read the sign nearby, evoking its history. Exciting ! (Original) En retrait, par rapport à la rue principale, à l'arrière de la cathédrale, vous découvrez un peu par hasard ce petit édifice magnifique, la "Lanterne des morts". (Translated by Google) A strange building at the back of the cathedral, set back from the main street but not away from the busy streets, as it offers a view of the cathedral from its landing 😇 We visited it in the cool of nightfall, which gave the stone a magnificent color 😊 Too bad, they'll just have to add a railing, a rope to access it 👍 (Original) Étrange bâtiment à l'arrière de la cathédrale, éloigner de la rue principale mais pas de l'affluence car elle donne une vue de son palier sur la cathédrale 😇 Nous l'avons visiter à la fraîche à la nuit tombé cela rendait à la pierre une couleur magnifique 😊 Dommage, il faudra juste rajouter une rambarde, Cordon pour pouvoir y accéder 👍

Intriguing "monument" which origins date back to the 12th century. The term "lantern of the dead" is a neologism. In the past, other names were used, such as "cemetery lamp" or "fanal". Its origin remains shrouded in mystery, fueling local legends and stories. Designed in limestone typical of the region, this building is distinguished by its slender shape and conical roof. This monument, listed as a historical monument, represents a real enigma. Indeed, while some lanterns were used to mark cemeteries, others had a spiritual or protective function. The location of the Lantern of the Dead, near the old Saint-Sacerdos church and an old Benedictine cemetery of Saint-Benoit, reinforces its close link with medieval religious practices. The use of these lanterns of the dead, widely used in certain regions of France such as Creuse and Puy-de-Dôme, often symbolized a light guiding the souls of the deceased. The Lantern of the Dead of Sarlat is part of this heritage, testifying to the close relationship between spiritual beliefs and funerary architecture. It is interesting to note that similar lanterns of the dead are found in various regions of France, each with its own particularities. Some, such as those found in villages along the Loire River, also served as landmarks for nighttime travelers. Others, further south, towards the Charente River, were often associated with specific funerary rites.

A unique tower behind the Cathedral dedicated to the dead. Well worth to take a look, as it's only a few of these monuments existing in France.
Adie K — Google review
(Translated by Google) A surprising structure that amazes the eye as you pass behind the cathedral. A lantern that illuminates our dead as they pass into the light? No one knows, even if we like to think so. A quiet place where inner peace and spiritual elevation reign for those who know how to listen. July/August is very busy. Free admission. (Original) Surprenante structure qui emerveille le regard quand on passe derrière la cathédrale. Une lenterne qui illuminerait nos morts lors de leurs passages dans la lumière ? City park
Parc Du Plantier, located just a short distance from the medieval center of Sarlat, was once the Abbey gardens and has now been transformed into a charming municipal park. The park features an array of colorful flowers, shady trees, and well-maintained paths that make it easy to navigate. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of benches for relaxation. Families with young children can take advantage of the small play area and an attractive bandstand within the park.
There is a nice walk around and through this park which was near enough to where we stayed inside the old town so that we could use it for our daily exercise during the lock-down in spring 2020.
Delaine F — Google review
Pretty park lying above and on the outskirts of the old city, within a short walk of the main streets and tourist attractions. A nice place to sit and relax, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A pretty tree lined path runs along the top of the park to the bandstand and to a small children's play area. There's plenty of shade and benches, although a couple of the beaches are a little rickety. In one corner there are public toilets, but whilst free, they're not very clean. Just serviceable. Calm, beautiful park. Picnic tables and play area for kids too....
Kimberly B — Google review
A lovely place to come and sit and get away from the bustling town. It is peaceful with lots of benches, big shady trees and paths which are easy to navigate. The park isn't large and on a hillside so quite steep to walk around and to the top if you have mobility issues. There are public toilets but they are not the best, so I would suggest using those on the carpark below.

Fortress
Château de Beynac is a massive medieval fortress situated on a cliff by the riverside in Dordogne. The region offers a blend of rural France's charm, featuring delightful cuisine, fine wine, and a romantic medieval heritage. Visitors can explore scenic rivers, serene valleys, and enchanting forests for a tranquil retreat from modern life.
Great medieval castle with stunning views and no crowds. Fascinating history and well-preserved architecture make it worth visiting. Important tip: Skip the lower parking and go straight to the upper lot (same price). The walk up from below is very steep and challenging - those with mobility issues should definitely use the top parking. The upper lot saves you a difficult climb and gets you right to the entrance. Highly recommend for history lovers looking for an authentic castle experience without the tourist masses.
Angel O — Google review
The video explaining the architecture of Château de Beynac was excellent. The accompanying app provided an audio guide and the narrative about Queen Eleanor and her son, King Henry, enriching the experience. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, offering a unique perspective reminiscent of the monarchy, where you feel as if you’re overlooking the entire land, inspiring a sense of responsibility to protect it. From this vantage point, you can also see the nearby Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle. The entrance fee is quite reasonable, making this visit even more worthwhile. Highly recommend!
Jihon W — Google review
Château de Beynac is stunning—basically the Beyoncé of castles. The views will wreck you (in a good way), and the stairs will leave you breathless along with the view. Worth it. Also, the castle was basically for a woman who had two husbands bc she could. Iconic
Lauren — Google review
Grand castle. Need 1 hour to go through it. Asked to download the application as tour guide. Could have provided a pamphlet instead of it. View was stunning and worth a one time visit
Venkatesan D — Google review
The most amazing Château we have been to yet! Well worth the trip, just make sure you park up top and not on river like we did. It's a very steep, but beautiful walk up the path if you want some exercise tho.
Dave — Google review
One of the most impressive castles in the Périgord. Majestic, its location remains breathtaking and its panorama exceptional. Indeed, this incredible medieval fortress, perched on its golden cliff, overlooks the Dordogne River from over 150 meters above sea level. A true movie set ! A tour of the castle will take you from the 12th-century keep to the majestic Salle des Etats, ending at the top of the Éperon Tower, where you'll overlook the valley just as the Beynac family, to whom the building belonged for nearly 1,000 years, did. From there, the view over the Valley of the Five Castles is superb ! When leaving the castle, we've visit the church, whose stately lodge is open to the public.

What an incredible castle. This ancient castle sits above the Dordogne Valley with an ancient 12th century village on the surrounding hillside. No guides, just enjoy at your own pace. A must see if you are in the area.

Good food (duck confit was excellent!). Decent service. Nice location near the cathedral.

Nice place in the heart of the old city of Sarlat. Nice terrace. A large choice of drinks and dishes. Very professional and kind staff. Good price. If you choose the menu, the portions are nearly half the size from the one à la carte (explained by the staff) because the menu’s price is trajet competitive for the location

After traveling in the area got to Sarlat and walk around and figures it’s time for late lunch My daughter and myself ordered burger, and while my daughter didn’t like the bun and myself I would have passed the cheese the burger itself was excellent.

We can here because it's recommended by Rick Steves tour book. And he is right! Love the ambience by the old Abbey and street musician too. I had salad with goose liver and other toppings. It was delicious!

Walked in after the place we wanted to go to was closed and it was wonderful! The service was friendly and efficient and the food was good. The only reason it wasn't great was because the meats were a little over cooked. Definitely recommend this place.

Restaurant l'Entrepôte is a delightful gem nestled in Sarlat-la-Caneda, boasting a charming and cozy ambiance with its exposed-stone walls and inviting terrace. This eatery specializes in regional French cuisine, offering diners an array of beautifully presented dishes made from high-quality ingredients. Guests rave about the attentive service and the lovely courtyard setting that enhances the dining experience.
A really beautiful restaurant with a great value set menu. The waiters spoke excellent English and helped us decipher some of the menu items. All the food was delicious and the waiter made a great wine recommendation. I would definitely recommend the restaurant over some of the more touristy ones in the area!
Emily E — Google review
Went there with friends who liked this restaurant a lot a few years ago. Tdlr: ok, but expensive. Can find better alternative. Very limited for veg. Starter: foie Gras. Really good, apart from the 2 bites of toasted bread. More would be welcomed. 2nd: tomato soup: pretty good. Main: pork. Nice meat, juicy. BBQ glaze was almost tasteless. Mashed potato pretty good. Pork near the bone wasn't fully cooked though. 2nd: rice salad (veg). Pretty good fo4 a rice salad. Still a 20e+ rice salad ... Dessert: "the star" profiterole canele style. Understand: canele cut in half with one scoop of vanilla ice cream bathing in chocolate sauce and with some Chantilly on top. I could bet the chocolate sauce was the cheap kind, with no chocolate at all (industrial, not home made). Presentation was lacking. Friends told us it was better before. The dessert was good, not wow, but very expensive imo (11e). Service: meh. Managed to get some of our orders wrong 3 times (relatively minor inconvenience though). All in all: I wouldn't go back there.
Franck B — Google review
Told no reservations - no worries, happy to chance it and come back at opening time. Got there 15 minutes before opening - short queue, but only a few groups in front. No issues with waiting for somewhere that looks lovely and gets good food reviews. Three tables seated before us, so plenty of room. Asked for a table (7 of us). Told no. Said no worries, and said we can sit separately - so asked for a table for 3 and table for 4. Told no. No reason, and fairly curt - and in front of a little girl, which is really poor. Haven’t rated the food or atmosphere as didn’t get chance, but a really disappointing experience. Everything happens for a reason though - a wonderful local lady recommended a restaurant round the corner and it was the find of the holiday.
David G — Google review
On a rainy night in Sarlat, we were glad to have a table inside. The seating was a bit close, so I was staring at a couple at the next table. The food menu offers interesting twists for Sarlat - some work, some don't. The sea bream carpaccio was delicious, but the prawn dish was less so. The foie gras & duck my partner had were both good. The deconstructed profiteroles were tasty. The red wine was very drinkable. Overall, it was a good meal but not a great meal.
Julie K — Google review
Very average. Service was incredibly slow though friendly. There was a set menu costing 28 euros, with 3 choices of starter, and 3 of main , and 2 of desserts. But 1 of the starters and 1 of the main dishes cost an extra 6 euros each. Kid option was chicken with potatoes. The foie gras was nice, as was the dessert, the mains were very unexciting. Location is very central but on a side street so a little bit more quiet.
Celine — Google review
The food was truly exquisite. Starters, as well as the main course turned out to be a really noble experience. The presentation and diverse flavors were surely top notch. Recommend this restaurant very much.
Tom G — Google review
One of the best meals we ate on our whole trip. My husband had an amazing duck confit. The mushrooms in his dish were the best mushrooms I have ever tasted. I loved my poke bowl. The flavors were on point. And the canneles served in profiterole form were absolute genius. One of the best desserts I've ever had. SO good.

Le Bistro de l'Octroi in Sarlat is a classic and lively spot offering a warm welcome in a typical stone house at the town's entrance. The restaurant features an old-fashioned Eiffel veranda and a summer terrace, allowing guests to fully enjoy their dining experience. With its convenient location near the parking lot, it offers easy access for visitors.

This restaurant is open seven days a week, which is unheard of for Sarlat. It’s always clean and the staff are diligent. The food is not bad either. They have a nice terrace for the summer. Good location just about 5 minutes walk away from the center. It is usually booked as people know that they are always open.
Hanh N — Google review
Food was ok (chicken supreme was very good), service was terrible, not attentive in any way. Kept waiting to order, decided to go up and pay as the quicker option. Three courses took twice as long as any other establishment.
Claire H — Google review
Excellent flavours and location. Flavours are true to the Dordogne region of France. Service is a little slow at times, but that is completely because they food is so good that all the tables are taken. Book ahead.

Gueule & Gosier Restaurant is a must-visit gastronomic brasserie in Sarlat. Nestled in a beautiful setting slightly away from the touristy streets, this restaurant offers healthy, modern French cuisine with a fusion twist that excites the taste buds. Known for its bold and delicious blends, it's popular for its duck confit and baba rhum dessert as well as other traditional and regional dishes.
We just had a great lunch as a family of 5. A very warm welcome and despite the town is crowded and we didn't book we were able to get seats inside. If you want to be seated outside, booking is recommended. And now: the food is original but traditional and most important locally sourced. The taste was great and our favourite part was that the kids menu was the same as the adult one but halt sized and with 15 Euro more than reasonable. Finally a restaurant which supports the proper education food wise for the next generations. I can not stand kids menus at other restaurants with always the same stuff. Here the kids can eat as the parents and mine enjoyed every bite. Highly recommended.

Fusion of French and Asian cuisine. Some plates are better than others. The Thai duck starter was overwhelming with too many flavors and textures. The little peanut salad was the best part. The pork loin was delicious! Great location.
Mala — Google review
This was the only place I could find that was open for dinner on a Sunday and had a vegan option on the menu. It is nestled between beautiful medieval buildings and narrow picturesque lanes. They were so sweet to make me a vegan amuse bouche and offer to make me a falafel starter (not on the menu). The white wine from Bergerac was delicious, and the service was great.

Best menu and food in Sarlat! We ate here 3 times while we were there. The dishes were artfully created with fresh seasonal flavors. I had the froie gras, duck, tomatoes, desserts, wine, pork, and vegetarian dish over the course of our stay.

Had a great dinner here. Excellent duck breast and duck confit. Flavors were spot on and everything was cooked to perfection. Chocolate dessert was also delicious. I highly recommend.

Exceptional food, best duck I’ve ever had, served with incredible sauces. The staff seemed a bit overwhelmed (which I would chalk down to the intense heat that day). All round well worth the trip and the price.

Auberge Le Mirandol, located at 7 rue des Consuls, offers classic stews, tarts, and wines from the Dordogne Valley in a bistro setting with a natural cave. The restaurant features its own little Lascaux-type cave at the back of the dining room. The food is good and reasonably priced.
What a beautiful meal and excellent service. Definitely have to book. I had the duck breast and was quite a large meal and the duck was well cooked and melted in your mouth. Hubby had the vol-au-vent and is was delicious as well. Excellent and friendly service as well. Desserts were also really good.

A wonderful restaurant in the old town. The food is great and filled with regional produce. The staff are excellent and the building amazing. It even has its own natural cave. Only complaint is they charged €7 for a tonic ( no gin) A great place for a special meal.

Beautiful atmosphere and delicious food! The foie gras trio was a great choice and they fried one of the foie gras which was a fun addition to the appetizer. Of course the wine from the region is delicious and our main meal was crispy and paired nicely with the choice of wine. The kids enjoyed their meal and wanted more bites of everyone at the table!

Great meal after a long day of sightseeing. Started off with the pan fried fois gras in the mango sauce. Followed by the medallions of guinea fowl and the chocolate cake. The meal was excellent, perfectly cooked, and delicious. They recommended an excellent wine to pair with it and the overall cost of the meal was worth it. Don't miss the secret cave in back!

Excellent food, outstanding location, very good service. This was the highlight dinner of our stay in Dordogne. The wines are to die for. Any bio is e em better. Oh my! We chose the menu, because it’s quintessential of the region. Flavours and specialties, from starters to dessert, carefully selected to elate your experience. Go for it! And the cave … don’t miss the cave

My wife, Lynn, and I have been staying in Sarlat for the past week and are so glad we found this restaurant. We had one of the best meals here since our arrival in town. We were warmly greeted, and although we had no reservation, we were seated immediately at a charming table. The staff were friendly, professional and very patient with our “restaurant French.” We ordered the Coq au Vin Maison and the Truite (trout) du Perigord du sauce du Chef. Both dishes were expertly prepared and very delicious. When you are in Sarlat, definitely dine at Auberge Le Mirandol. And, don’t forget to take a look at the cave.

Attentive friendly staff in old world dining room, very affordable price fixe menus, various duck dishes the speciality. Fun caves inside back of restaurant.

Great place, my family and I ate here 3 times our week in Sarlat. Try the découverte de foie gras, the best we had all week! Excellent service, nice menu selection. It was great having a non-frozen kids menu. Seating inside and out was lovely. And you can visit their little natural cave in the back :)

The restaurant La Rapière in Sarlat-la-Caneda is a great place to go for a meal if you're looking for traditional food from the region. It's very rich and filling, so be warned - it can be quite expensive. The service here is excellent and the chicken I ate was some of the best I've ever had.
This is one of my favourite hotels and restaurants in France. I've stayed twice and each time has been wonderful. The owners and staff are so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are very classic, one shouldn't expect thrills. If it's authenticity then this is your place. I slept so well that night restaurant. It is my hope to go again sometime soon.

Tried the €39 three-course menu option and I have no complaints. You can choose between a few dishes for starter, main and dessert. With the extra bread it is almost too much. Good atmosphere sitting outside, friendly staff.

A great meal with the best chicken I've ever tasted, great service and a delicious Bergerac Red to savour as well.

Just had drinks here. Good coffee, nice and strong. Busy service staff but friendly.

Salads are excellent and overly generous. White asparagus with soft-boiled egg were delicious, as were scallops with coconut cream and vegetables. Service was very pleasant, but it took too long to pay the bill since only one machine was working. Prices are very reasonable.

Had crepes here for lunch on the “crepes” side (beside Rapier, same kitchen). Filling was boring and bland. Everything was edible but not tasty. Salad came with old soggy dark green or black bits in with the lettuce (week old grocery store mix??). Very expensive for what it was. Unless you have to have a crepe, stay away!

The service was absolutely terrible at La Rapière. We came for dinner tonight at about 8:00 pm. An hour after we had finished our main courses, and after multiple inquiries, our desserts still didn't show up. It was already over 10:00 pm and our 7-year-old daughter had fallen asleep. When we asked if they could deduct the costs for the two desserts which we never received (~10€), they refused. A man who appeared to be the person in charge told us no one was authorized to make a prize adjustment tonight simply because his boss wasn't on site.

We went there for Lunch and the food was not realy good and to top it all off we found a price of Glas in the Desert. When we tould them we had no apologie and we have been still charged full price. I dount recomend to go there and if you do eat your food very carefully.

Restaurant
La Romane is an Italian restaurant located in Sarlat-la-Caneda, France. It offers a variety of traditional Italian dishes such as antipasti, pizzas, pasta, and other mains in a charming rural-chic setting with a shady garden. Despite being slightly off the main streets, La Romane is highly regarded by visitors for its wide selection of pizzas and other Italian specialties. The restaurant is known for its excellent food and friendly staff who are accommodating to non-French speakers.
Pour les tourists! This is a restaurant you need to see when visiting Sarlat. David, their chef du Maison is a wonderful and friendly person who will be glad to help. Their pizzas and pasta is out of the world. I highly recommend the carbonara. Don't forget to try their café liegois (coffee ice cream sundae). Absolutely amazing. Cannot say enough you need to eat here!

Very nice place for lunch. We had pizza and will be back to try other dishes. They have a homemade olive oil infused with hot peppers and thyme that really set the pizza apart here in France. Not many spicy dishes which we are used to.
Kurt L — Google review
Book in advance for this place, it does get busy. Very friendly staff who humoured my attempts at engaging them in French. The food was excellent. I had the Stagioni pizza which was hopefully close to being vegetarian. They seem to cook the base of the pizza with a few toppings and then add the fresh toppings, such as cucumber and rocket, before serving. Not sure I’ve ever had that before but it worked really well.
Steve C — Google review
Our third night at Sarlat, we came by this place. They were very friendly and served us very quickly. Unlike many other restaurants in France, we didn't have to wait long for someone to take our order or receive food. Our waitress was very friendly and she gave us a shot of digestif after dinner free of charge. We had a lasagna and a salmon pasta. Food was very tasty as well.
Hanna K — Google review
Busy place. Pizzas are good although the bottom of the base could be a little less dark. Minor gripe though. Unfortunately I wasn’t made to feel very welcome. I was dining alone and despite a big terrace area with plenty of free space I was only offered an inside table close to the oven. I asked to sit outside but was told these were tables for 4 and so were not suitable for 1 person. Boss did mention he’d move me but later said it ‘wasn’t possible’ (a table for 2 just outside the window remained empty throughout my entire meal). In the few days I’ve been in Sarlat I’ve noticed other restaurants treating solo diners respectfully, so if you’re alone I’d recommend spending your cash elsewhere

The service is friendly and professional, and the food and drinks are delicious without being overly expensive. The menu offers local specialties, providing an authentic French dining experience. We were in Sarlat recently for the first time and what a wonderful historic town . We were in the medieval area looking for a good pizza and happened upon this restaurant. We sat outside when it rained the host was busy opening overhead protection and he got it done. The pizza was delicious, my wife had pasta which was great and our friends' meals were great as well. Overall great food and attentive staff in a great location !

We had walked up and down for a while then decided on this place and I am so glad we did. My husband had the antipasti with a small beer and I had the four cheese pizza with an Aperol Spritz followed by the strawberry and vanilla ice cream (recommended by the waitress) and homemade tiramasu. It was all very delicious. The staff were friendly and spoke amazing English (our waitress had both English and French parents - from Oxford) total meal was just over 60€. Definitely worth a visit.

We went here because we wanted to have some more traditional French cuisine and so we tried the €20 menu which had 3 courses. Everything was great! The potatoes on the main course were incredible!! I could eat those all day. All the courses were very in tune with the local specialties so it was a perfect way to get our French fix. Although we are cheap backpackers, we though that the €20 was definitely worth the experience and the food was fantastic!

We enjoyed this unpretentious restaurant many times over the course of our six week in Sarlat-la-Caneda. Food was always well prepared in generous servings but the service was outstanding. Always enjoyed a warm greeting from everyone on the staff. By the third visit, we were old friends. One of the few restaurants open Sunday during the shoulder season. Ask to be seated in the upstairs terrace and enjoy overlooking the Place de la Liberté.

Nice place on the market square also one of the restaurants which had more variantions as foie gras from geese or canard on the menu. ;-) service was quick and friendly, my burger was ok a little underseasned but lots of sauce. The walnut cake was very nice as was the pizza my wife had. We were outside on the terras but inside and especially the first floor was very pretty.

Fantastic service in a magical location. The staff were very attentive and spoke very good English although we did try to talk to them in French. We both had a pizza each which was just enough and very filling. Although we did sneak a dessert in and "Oh My God" well worth it. Will definitely be eating here again when we are back in the area. Keep up the great work.

Nestled in the charming town of Sarlat, Restaurant Aux 3 Sens stands out as a culinary gem that transcends the typical tourist experience. Owned by Argentine Chef Christian Borini, this delightful eatery specializes in refined Perigord cuisine crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Diners can expect beautifully plated dishes bursting with flavor at surprisingly affordable prices—especially during lunch where you can indulge in three courses for under 25 euros.
Last night, my husband, son, and I had the pleasure of dining at Aux 3 Sens, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we walked in, the warm and attentive welcome set the tone for the evening. The dishes were exquisite—every bite a testament to culinary artistry. For truffle lovers, this place is heaven; the flavors were perfectly balanced and indulgent. We left thoroughly impressed and delighted. Highly recommend for an exceptional dining experience!

This was a fairly enjoyable experience. The gentleman that assisted me throughout the evening was superb. He patiently explained dishes and wines to me in English (unfortunately my French is rather poor). I opted for the 3 course menu with amuse-bouche et buerre, foie gras du canard, beef ribs, and chocolate mousse. Eating this kind of service does take a couple hours - don't plan to eat quickly and move on. This is intended to be enjoyed with time. I have never had foie gras before, but always wanted to try it. I appreciated the opportunity to try it in three different preparations, and can happily say that I enjoy it in some forms and not others. Although this was a fine experience solo, I think it would be best enjoyed amongst others simply due to the long period of time. I would also recommend having a better command of French to fully enjoy the experience.
Ali P — Google review
Warm attentive service in a bright venue with delicious, well presented food. We had the 3 course set lunch. My first course was a light creamed soup-like vegetable dish. It was served with croutons and homemade chips. I enjoyed the tastes and textures but not a fan of when the plate is monochromatic (this is nothing against the chef, this is my personal taste). My main was a perfectly cooked filet of fish served with a nice amount of veggies. Dessert was the least impressive part of lunch and while it was very pretty and had nice texture, the fruit overpowered the cake flavour. But I still enjoyed it very much!! Service was impeccable and very welcoming. Setting was a nice change from older and darker venues. I would definitely visit again.
Carolyn D — Google review
We did not enjoy our meal or our experience here. The male waiter was rude and inattentive towards us while the waitress could not answer questions about the food and how it was prepared. Neither knew who ordered what, which is table waiting 101. The food itself was ok - nothing more than that and we have eaten much better elsewhere. We felt they treated the French customers with much greater courtesy than those from overseas, esp the male waiter. We felt he elevated his bonhomie towards them to emphasise the contrast. If you want an objective care factor assessment, just look at the plants in the boxes outside (photo attached of one) - they are almost all dead!!

Foie gras escalope grilled served on orange creme brûlée bread with foie gras mi-cuit Duck confit IGP Perigord with mandarin and ginger with morels sauce , prunes and vegetables Chocolate 70% with ice cream and truffle walnut oil injector , white truffle and truffle caviar in ginger and truffle crumble Pear poached with pannacotta and gingerembre confit Coming back here. ❤️ Update. : we came back here for our last night in Sarlat. Superb again. Foie Gras again superb , Argentinian wagyu beef cooked to perfection and my wife went for the same pannacotta dessert - had been thinking about it for 3 days ! And I , that amazing declination of chocolate !! Hands down the best restaurant in Sarlat. And one of the finest meals in France.

Inventive and provocative menu and with a few curve balls ( in a good way). this restaurant lives up to its name. I went there with my husband and son were visiting from the United States. All three senses came alive with each dish. When in Sarlat make this one of your stops .

Disappointing. The room was cold. The tataki de thon was good, but the falafel was underwhelming for 24 euros( only one falafel). My husband had the 46 euros menu and found it unexceptional. Overall it was not good value for money.

We celebrated our 30th Anniversary with a month in France and Switzerland. My wife and I enjoy French cuisine and since we're from California where foie gras is illegal, I eat is as often as possible when traveling, particularly in Sarlat la Caneda! I asked our concierge for the best French restaurants that are romantic and serve excellent foie gras and Aux 3 Sens was on their top list. We made reservations a few months in advance and were so glad we did! Of the many wonderful meals we had, particularly in France, we ranked them and Aux 3 Sens was in the top 3. The chef made a foie gras dish for me that consisted of only seared foie gras, my favorite. The meal was spectacular, the server happened to be a British ex pat and provided us with excellence at every step, guiding us through each course. Afterwards, the chef met us at our table and invited us for coffee downstairs in the wine cellar. Absolutely amazing dinner, service, and experience! If you're so fortunate to be in Sarlat, make sure Aux 3 Sens is on your list. Make reservations in advance.

This historic monument, located in a preserved area of the city, provides insight into the private lives of the Gisson family, who held prestigious positions such as royal notary, lawyers, consulates, and knights. The manor's 15 rooms showcase original medieval architecture and beautiful interiors with no roped-off areas.

This is such a brilliant museum. It is in the mansion of the wealth Gisson family and gives a fascinating history from the medieval times until modern days. The rooms are wonderfully appointed with artifacts and clothes and the explanations fact sheet was great. Well worth the visit.

If you like to visit places that appear authentic then this manor does well. You need to climb up winding stone stairs but there’s a rail to hold on to and as I’ve a new hip, that helped me. The rooms are well set out and you wonder how they managed to get the heavy wooden furniture up! The kitchen has some interesting features and the attic where the stone roof is visible. As an old town house of some importance it’s a good place to visit with its regency musical background and we were surprised there weren’t more people there. It added to our stay in Sarlat.

Great bar and tapas joint locally, right in the center of town. We love coming here. They got great wine, artisanal beer, yummy cheese and cold cuts. They recently added some more tapas to the menu that’s pretty good, ie...mussels, shrimps, beef ... They are also planning to expand to the next little space over. Owner is super friendly. This was one of our favourite places in Sarlat unexpectedly. Different to most of the other eateries which focus on traditional dishes of the region. You won't regret coming here. After visiting Lyon and Paris, I will haven't found a boulangerie as good as Maison Lissajoux. Keep in mind that if you want brunch, service is at 10.

Must-visit artisanal bakery in the heart of Sarlat! The smell of freshly baked goods hits you the moment you walk in, and the place has such a cosy, welcoming feel. Their pastries also use local ingredients such as nuts, and everything looks and tastes amazing. We went back later for a sandwich and treated ourselves to two Périgourdins with pralines.

An excellent place, the aroma of freshly baked bread and the trays of pastries will make you hungry as soon as you open the door! You can take away, or enjoy at a table in the back - it was my go-to for morning cappuccino and a pastry, and if I lived here it would be a daily thing. Beautiful interior, friendly staff, who speak far batter English than I do French. If you find yourself in Sarlat, this is a must-try. They also offer a small selection of sandwiches for lunch. Baking is done on site, and behind glass windows you can watch these experts make miracles out of flour and water.

Camping Les Acacias in Sarlat is a serene campsite with cabin rentals, a bar, and games for kids. It offers both indoor and outdoor pools for relaxation. The spacious pitches and great outdoor pool make it an ideal base to explore local attractions like Domme and Chateau Beynac. The site has good facilities with two separate blocks, one older but clean near the pool, and another newer block.
This was a return visit for us in our motorhome although I hadn’t realised until we neared the site and I was happy to be back. The site is immaculate, well set out with private pitches. The swimming pools are perfect for spending time at. The hosts are helpful and friendly. It is a pleasant cycle ride into Sarlat. The sanitary block is immaculate. Such a lovely spot and we will return.

We stayed on this site in our motorhome for 3 nights. The weather was pretty wet but the site location is lovely and it is an easy cycle ride into Sarlat. Facilities are good and everything is well cared for. A particular thank you to the reception staff, Aurélie and Catherine who were charming and helpful. I crashed my drone into the nearby woods with little hope of finding it. Aurélie speaks perfect English and communicated my problem to Catherine who showed me a path leading into the woods and accompanied me to find the location of “my crash” enabling me to use GPS to find the drone in amongst the trees. A refreshing experience of people going beyond the call of duty to be helpful. Many thanks to you both.

Visited mid June and stayed 12 nights. A very peaceful, well laid out site. The pitching is in two seperate areas. The one to the right of the parking lay by is smaller but slightly sloping. The other, which we chose, has a good choice of pitches, varying in size. Some of these are a little difficult but for van's with motor movers they don't present a problem. The bar area is very pleasant with an outside patio. Food is cooked here but is for takeaway only which was a little odd given the amount of tables inside and out. The swimming pools are good, both inside and out. A plus for the site was the small bus that ran from the entrance to Sarlat. The narrow road of a few yards is easy to negotiate just go slow. All in all I site I enjoyed and would return to. Just a pity about the food rule.

Nice, quiet site, large pitches, great outdoor pool. Great base for local places such as Domme and Chateau Beynac. Facilities good, 2 separate blocks. One near the pool is older but clean, other block is newer but didn't use it. Bar open each afternoon/evening. This area of the Dordogne is stunning. Tight squeeze for caravans and campers getting through the village onto the site, but all seemed to manage ok. Update - stayed again for 3 nights in July 2022. Got a sloping pitch which wasn't great, pool and bar still good, but didn't see any maintenance people, weeds growing high in places. Probably the last visit for us. BTW, Sarlat medieval town centre is stunning.

Hotel Plaza Madeleine À Sarlat is an upscale establishment located in the heart of Sarlat-la-Caneda. It features a seasonal outdoor pool, a spa with massage services, and recreational amenities such as an indoor pool, spa tub, and sauna. The hotel offers polished rooms with city views and pet-friendly options. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant and bar while taking in scenic views.
Nice little boutique hotel, centrally located at the beginning of the old city in Sarlat. Clean, comfortable and quiet hotel. Rooms are adequate in size and the AC works great. Service was friendly and helpful. Breakfast is €19 pp and probably not worth it for a limited buffet, but you're paying for the convenience.

This was a very nice hotel in Sarlat-la-Canéda. It’s walking distance to town, restaurants and parks. The receptionists are very friendly. It attracts groups, so be ready to wait.

Modern hotel with perfect location in medieval Sarlat. The rooms show hints of age but the service is unparalleled. I want to specifically thank Salomé at the front desk and the guys behind the bar for making my stay so warm and comfortable.

We had five nights here, unusual for us to stay anywhere so long but we are so glad we did. From the first moment we were made to feel welcome and appreciated as customers. The front desk team are the best! Our room on the first floor was opposite the spa, which we used on a few occasions. With an outdoor pool it’s a lovely place to be even when the weather isn’t that great. Try the cherry cocktail in the bar - very good. And you must also try the wine dispenser. What a fantastic way to sample a range of wines, which you can study and taste in your own time. Great fun and great wine! The hotel has spacious and secure parking which is a short and pleasant walk away. It has Tesla Destination chargers and facilities for charging other EVs. This was the icing on the cake for us and meant we could park our car and forget it for a few days. Thank you Hotel Madeleine for making our first trip to Perigord the highlight of our many trips to France. We can’t wait to return x

I confess I only use the bar or go for coffee, but I always find the staff warm, friendly and being in a warm cosy atmosphere, hence why I always visit.

Very nice hotel within steps of Sarlat’s pedestrian district. Comfortable rooms, pleasant and helpful staff, nice heated pool. Highly recommend the terrace room where the pool is two steps from your door, yet you have good privacy on your terrace. Has a parking garage, which is very nice, but be aware it’s about a 5-7 minute walk to get there (all flat).

The hotel is beautiful, with comfy rooms and beds. The pool is nice, especially the outdoor jacuzzi is delightful. The sauna is great, too. Avoid the cocktail bar, though. They don't appear to know classic cocktails and the seasonal one from their menu was prepared with Fanta.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in a standard room. We enjoyed the pool and sauna. The breakfast was good but the selection could be a bit better. We didn't like the cocktail bar. The waiter ignored us for 15 min and then didn't know any cocktails that were not listed on the menu. We ordered their signature cocktail in the end and it turned out to be a soda based drink which wasn't good.
