Hiking Trails
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is a must-visit destination in Monterey County, California. It offers stunning coastal views, diverse wildlife, and picturesque beaches. The reserve features several hiking trails such as the Cypress Grove Trail and Bird Island Trail, allowing visitors to explore its natural beauty up close. With limited parking capacity and some areas restricting access due to fragility, it's essential to plan ahead for a visit.
This place is absolutely stunning! The coastal views are breathtaking, with dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and waves crashing against rocky coves. The hiking trails are well-kept and offer a nice variety—some take you through cypress groves and wildflower-dotted meadows, while others open up to sweeping ocean vistas. It’s the perfect mix of peaceful nature and jaw-dropping scenery—truly one of California’s gems!
Jonathan W — Google review
I went to this place not reading anything about it and I was very impressed by its natural beauty. We went on a Saturday and it was unsurprisingly busy. The hiking was great. Lots of good views of this jagged part of the coastline. Not a shortage of Instagrammable shots. The cypress trees among rocky cliffs and bluffs were a unique sight for me in California. Only wished that there were more picnic tables and picnic tables built on shaded/covered areas. Also, parking can be quite difficult if it's a busy day in the reserve and the amount of street parking available (along the main highway) can make you park wayyy far from the reserve's entrance (they close it if the lot is full). Alot at least 3 hours for this state reserve if you plan on taking a break for a picnic/snack. I liked that there were park rangers at the entrance and information areas, ready to help you with questions. Lastly, take care on the trails - there are lots of poison oak. Just make sure not to touch them! The guides can help you identify what they look like.
Daryl K — Google review
Thoroughly enjoyed my hike at Point Lobos. I was pleasantly surprised that such stunning views didn’t have a strenuous hike attached to it. Most hiking trails are easy to moderate for the average person. And some are super short with great views (good for those just wanting to get in and out). I can in mid-October on a weekday. Arrived one hour after opening and there was still ample parking. I left close to lunch time and there were still parking spots available. I’d say come early if you are coming during peak season (summer), holidays, or a weekend.
Azani A — Google review
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is an absolute treasure! The park’s breathtaking beauty—from dramatic coastal cliffs to crystal-clear waters and abundant wildlife—never ceases to amaze. The staff and docents are exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to share fascinating information, making each visit both enjoyable and educational. I’ve visited multiple times, and it’s no wonder this park has become so popular. Weekends can get busy, so arriving early for parking is highly recommended. Whether you’re seeking stunning scenery, peaceful hikes, or a chance to connect with nature, Point Lobos is simply unforgettable!
SK H — Google review
Did a 7 mile loop that covered most of the main attractions, was very gentle and did it with 5 children! We parked down the road and got there too early, hikers can't walk in until 0800! So that's good to know, figured that was just for vehicles.
Ryan S — Google review
Great State Park. Hiking is awesome with trails for all ability. Please note that parking is scarce. Get in early to grab a space in the park, otherwise plan on parking on the highway. Alternatively, wait till after 2pm and you should be able to enter and find a spot. $12 per car, $9 for seniors. Worth it! Recommended!
Mark E — Google review
It is so beautiful and calm. The trails are great. Parking is a little tricky if you done get there early on a weekend. I had to park on the side of the road but it was so worth it. The ocean views are gorgeous 😍
Lala G — Google review
Beautiful park with stunning scenery. Very exposed on the cliffs so you get great views but I wouldn’t want to be there in a storm! We saw sea lions, otters, and pelicans! Worth a visit and don’t forget your binoculars!

American restaurant
Nepenthe is a renowned eatery nestled on a cliff in Big Sur, offering delectable California cuisine and an outdoor terrace with awe-inspiring panoramic views. Originally established by Lolly and Bill Fassett in the late 1940s, this iconic restaurant holds deep roots in Big Sur's history. Constructed from redwood and handmade bricks, Nepenthe exudes a charming and relaxed ambiance that has endured through generations.
We were warmly welcomed by Hugo, who had a table for us at seat 102. While waiting, we enjoyed a couple of strong, yet tasty drinks, the perfect way to set the mood. The views were breathtaking, with the Pacific Ocean stretching out in front of us as the sun set. It felt surreal 😁 Instead of appetizers, we decided to share three entrées: the Ambrosia Burger, the scallops, and the steak, and every single dish was outstanding. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the steak was tender and flavorful, and the burger? Hands-down delicious. The quality of the food was jaw-dropping. This was one of those rare, special dining experiences where everything just clicks, the setting, the service, the food. Huge thanks to Hugo and the Nepenthe team for making our evening so memorable!
Raymond K — Google review
We had the grilled chicken breast and it was good. The food is pricey, but the beautiful ocean view makes it worth it. We wanted to sit indoors or outdoors, but the wait was about 40 minutes. Since we were hungry, we chose the bar seats. Unfortunately, once you sit at the bar, you can’t move to a table, which was a little disappointing. Still, overall, Nepenthe was a great experience!
Juhyun L — Google review
A timeless Big Sur experience. The grounds at Nepenthe are a destination all their own — perched high above the Pacific, where ocean mist meets redwood air. Between the sweeping coastal views, the lush terraces, and the inviting mix of locals and travelers, this spot captures the spirit of Big Sur like nowhere else. Whether you’re here for coffee, a glass of wine, or simply to watch the sunset melt into the horizon, the atmosphere feels both lively and sacred. Every visit reminds you that beauty doesn’t need to shout — it simply exists, effortlessly, right here.
Kytka — Google review
This is hard to beat on all levels. Go for the atmosphere, the views, the service and the great wine. We loved it so much on our first night in Big Sur, we went back for sunset cocktails on the deck the next night. Go, it's a crown jewel and the rewards are rich!! Get the chicken!! Wow!!
Adam R — Google review
Beautiful coastal views, definitely worth the drive. However not for the food. Mediocre, lacking flavorful, small portions. Overpriced 'cafeteria' food. Not worth the wait or the money. Very nice gift shop though. Parking can be tricky and limited. FYI Not accessible for wheelchairs nor anyone with difficulty walking. Several stairs, no ramps, to climb to restaurant. Go for the views, not the food. Disappointing.
Isabel C — Google review
Nice place to have lunch. Little expensive but the view makes it worth. Sitting outside and looking at the ocean while birds are chirping is beyond words!! Food is good too. Everyone is friendly and so helpful.
Amandeep K — Google review
The location is everything with Nepenthe. The food was definitely overpriced, but you pay for the view. My best salad was delicious, husband’s French dip was ok-bread too hard. Daughter’s Ambrosiaburger was delicious! Service was super friendly, which I always appreciate!

Absolutely spectacular views - can see for miles! Feels like a hidden retreat, surrounded by nature, deer grazing nearby. Excellent food and service, great place to spend a relaxing afternoon.

Nature & Parks
Garrapata State Park, located along Highway 1 in California, offers a stunning coastal landscape with 2 miles of beachfront and hiking trails. The park features a 50-foot climb to a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. As you journey through this area, you may encounter artists capturing the scenery on canvas or musicians playing music amidst the natural beauty. Nearby attractions like Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Asilomar State Beach provide additional opportunities for exploration and inspiration.
Amazing loop hike at Garapatta State Park! We started through the Soberanes Canyon Trail to Doud Peak, then the Rocky Ridge trail. The first part of the trail was a beautiful forest that went up and down; then we hiked up the mountain. The view from the top and going downhill was a beautiful ocean view. We saw a snake! Be very careful of deer tick. Happy trail!
Amie S — Google review
It was lovely and stunning views of the ocean! We also saw the Cala lilies and took sown lovely pictures. I highly recommend hiking here.
Carmen M — Google review
One of the most incredible places I've ever been. Unbelievable ocean views, easy-to-walk trails, no entry fee, lots of different places to park, not overly crowded. Everyone said to go to Big Sur or Andrew Molera, but this one blew them both out of the water.
David S — Google review
With many gates to choose from, trail options span the easy quick to the beach or more expansive to the bluffs and scrambles to the tide pools. Parking can be a challenge so try to go early. Morning are foggy and get clearer in the afternoon. Many trails go thru fields of native flowers
James N — Google review
The views at this park were outstanding. It’s a cool stop take pictures and see beautiful sites.
Colleen R — Google review
Beautiful, quiet, serene. We took the bluffs trail and it was a quick and easy hike to view the rugged coastline. Not crowded at all later in the afternoon. Just a few minutes drive south from Point Lobos
Ivetta A — Google review
The pacific ocean, and everywhere it is encountered is truly magical. Here was a perfect place for the pup to play in the sand! We even saw a sea lion swimming!

It’s amazing place! Garrapata State Park is an absolutely stunning place! The breathtaking views of the ocean, dramatic cliffs, and lush greenery make it a perfect spot for nature lovers. The hiking trails are well-maintained, offering a variety of difficulty levels for everyone. If you enjoy photography, this place is a dream with its incredible scenery and opportunities to spot wildlife. The park is peaceful and not overly crowded, which makes it even more enjoyable. Highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area!

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a four-square-mile park in Central California known for its stunning ocean views, including the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge and the breathtaking McWay Falls. The park offers a short hike to a waterfall, a redwood grove, and coastal vistas. Named after Julia Pfeiffer Burns, a prominent Big Sur resident, this coastal destination is popular among hikers seeking panoramic views.
We did the Ewoldsen loop up to the Lookout Point at the top and it was one of the best hikes we’ve done. Great views and while it was a hike up a mountain, there was lots of shaded parts and variety in incline. Definitely worth it. The park has a self service, cash only entrance fee when the park attendant isn’t there that costs $10. Make sure you pay it as we saw a park ranger show up ~30 minutes after we arrived and started giving people tickets who didn’t pay the entrance fee.
Nicolas G — Google review
This is a beautiful scenic spot that is easily overlooked. Since part of Highway 1 is blocked, many tourists will not drive here. Because of this, it has pristine scenery and plant resources. It is more primitive and peaceful than ordinary outdoor parks. You can see pure wild animals and plants. This is definitely an outdoor paradise. Occasionally, you can see some professional outdoor players walking on some wild paths, which is an experience full of adventure and passion.
Shenhs E — Google review
We were excited to visit this state park. Unfortunately, only one trail was open, so we took it. It was a good hike, quite steep. We didn't make it to the end of the trail,we were about 1/2 mile away and there was more incline. Another hiker told us that the view from there wasn't worth the effort. We did see some nice views of the coast. There's very little information at this park. There isn't a trail map with distances. It seems you have to research everything before because there's no cell service in the area.
SeeTheWorld — Google review
Absolutely beautiful! Even though the waterfall trail was closed we were still able to view it from a small pull out. There is no through access south so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re visiting now. Beautiful colors. Some people even saw whales off in the distance.
Avremi — Google review
This place is absolutely breathtaking! The views are incredible, the scenery is gorgeous, and the trails are super easy to enjoy. You'll usually see plenty of tourists along the main paths snapping photos—which makes sense, the whole area is stunning!
Chris W — Google review
A natural wonder! Saw Partington Cove and Mcway Falls and hiked part of the Ewoldsen Trail. Despite major trail closures, the scenery is unmatched. There's lush forests, sweeping views of the California coastline, and a sense of serenity that's hard to find elsewhere. Definitely plan to revisit when it's fully open! ⛰️🌲🌊☮️
Pompompurin — Google review
I had a wonderful time hiking this area. The views are fantastic!
J. L — Google review
This state park, which is about 10 miles past the main drag of Big Sur going south, is the entryway to the McWay Waterfall, Canyon trail, and the Ewoldsen trail. There are a few other trails here, too, but they are currently closed. I'll say that the three trails mentioned above easily give you a few hours of adventure and entertainment.

Andrew Molera State Park, the largest state park in Big Sur, offers a relatively undeveloped natural experience with its scenic hiking trails, meadows, and beach. The park is popular for its over 20 miles of hiking trails and the Andrew Molera State Beach. It features 24 primitive walk-in tent sites that provide a secluded camping experience away from RVs and cars.
Great scenery, ample parking. We hiked the Creamery Ridge, Panorama, and Bluffs Loop. This is the review of the trail— Amazing loop hike on a well formulated trail. We got an adventurous surprise when we were met by the Big Sur River, which required passing knee deep water; most everyone removed their shoes to cross, and the water is cold and refreshing. There’s a slight detour to see the beach that we enjoyed before beginning the loop. We took the trail, starting the loop to the right closer to the water, and this area is flatter, then further south, the trail cuts quickly east uphill, and you travel up pretty steadily until the juncture heading north. Enjoy the view here because after you’ll be in the trees for a while as you gradually move downhill along the ridge. The final mile of the loop trail, the view opens up again. And we were able to see the sunset. At dusk, we hiked back on the meadow trail and we spotted a young mountain lion. It’s the first week of April, so the river is flowing well and there is also a stream or two where you could filter water. Loads of wild flowers. Even more poison oak; wear long pants and high socks to avoid it getting your legs. Great trail.
G B — Google review
Really cool place for a hike to the beach. It was really just a mile walk over flat ground, but we had to ford the river right at the start on June 8. Beach itself is spectacular! So beautiful and not very crowded given the work it takes to get there. We had a nice picnic after our hike. The whole area is kind of an awesome mix of Ireland and Hawaii.
Matt H — Google review
From the moment you enter, you’re greeted with breathtaking natural beauty. The trails are wonderfully serene, weaving through lush greenery and offering stunning views at every turn. The highlight, of course, is the expansive, sandy beach. It’s the perfect spot to relax, soak up the sun, or enjoy a peaceful walk along the shoreline. The combination of rugged cliffs, rolling hills, and soft sand makes it feel like a true coastal paradise. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or just taking in the scenery, Andrew Molera State Park is a must-visit for anyone who loves nature. Truly a hidden treasure!
SK H — Google review
We had a great time camping 3 nights at Trail camp. We were looking for a quiet place away from noisy generators and we just found the perfect place. The campsites are pretty spacious. The restrooms have flushing toilets and a sink with cold water, no shower though. We paid $30 per night, which is not too bad but I would say that $18-20 would be a better price based on amenities available. The campground is located at a very short walk from the parking lot. If you plan to use a wagon to haul all your supplies, be aware that you will have to carry it down a flight of stairs. Anyway, it was not too much trouble to get all our camping gear to our site. I was afraid it would be too much of a hassle. Beware of poison oak everywhere! During our stay we enjoyed going to the beach (1 mile from the parking lot). Nice walk!
Adeline C — Google review
We camped here for a night and loved it. Bathrooms at the campground and at the parking lot were both very well maintained. The campground was beautiful. It was quiet and others camping there were quiet and respectful. Trails to the beach and the camp trail to the Big Sur River were both very well maintained. The views from the Bluff Trail were spectacular. Alas, we are just too old to be camping anymore. My only feedback would be, the ground is not made out of memory foam. There is a short walk from the parking lot to the campground. While it's not long, you do need to carry everything in, and back out. Travel light, or put the kids to work.
Eric S — Google review
The park has a small parking lot where you pay for parking. This park has several hiking trails and one trail that will lead you to the beach, that is a little over a mile. The beach is nice and scenic but not for swimming as the waves and rocks are rough. Very relaxing area for sure.
Reuben R — Google review
Highly underrated Park with some terrific views, isolated beaches, and a nice panoramic hiking loop along the bluffs. I'd recommend long pants for some of trails as the poison oak gets pretty tight in the back trails - you're not going to be able to avoid it.
Michael P — Google review
My favorite hiking trail in Big Sur! Most trails in Big Sur take you from one mountain ridge to another, but the Creamery Meadow–Panoramic Bluff Trail Loop offers so much more variety. It’s an 8-mile loop, and I highly recommend starting at the Andrew Molera State Park trailhead, then turning left onto the Bluff Trail. Some hikers go straight to the beach first and do the loop in reverse—but I don’t recommend that. The incline from the bluff trial head up the middle is much steeper, and that route forces you to descend three very steep hills, which can be tough on your knees and footing. 💡 Trail tips: Wear long leggings/pants and tall socks. There's a ~2-mile stretch of narrow trail with overgrown brush on both sides that will scratch up any exposed skin. Rated moderate, but it leans toward the more strenuous side—roughly 5 of the 8 miles are uphill. Bring a lightweight long-sleeve sweater, even in summer. There’s a 2-mile stretch of strong ocean wind that can get chilly. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, a lunch sandwich, and make sure your phone is fully charged for photos—you’ll want them. 🌲🏞️ Why it’s worth it: Epic views of the Pacific Ocean Peaceful stretches through redwood groves Open meadows dotted with wildflowers A beach stop at the halfway point Panoramic views of both mountains and sea A constant ocean breeze that makes it perfect on hot days An unforgettable hike—diverse, scenic, and soul-refreshing. Definitely a Big Sur gem.

The Henry Miller Memorial Library is a cultural hub in Big Sur, once the residence of the famous author. It hosts readings, art shows, and live music events. The library holds historical significance as it was home to Henry Miller from 1944 to 1962. Visitors can immerse themselves in the literary legacy of the Beat Generation and other renowned writers who have left their mark on this iconic location.
Beautiful place with beautiful people! I happened to stop by on their big community “the big share” fundraiser event!! It was so wholesome to see people gather and support one another. The love and community felt there was potent in the air. I really appreciate how this building brings people together and does so much good🌎✨❤️

I'm a Big Sur wedding and elopement photographer and have worked here many times! Henry Miller Library is one of the most charming places in Big Sur. The library has so many gems to browse through, and the venue's patio overlooks lush forest surroundings that truly make you feel like you're deep in the redwood forest rather than on curated trails. Highly recommend this venue if you're looking for a unique place to get married that holds a special place in Big Sur's history!

One of the best places I visited. Such a cool spot and I would keep a photo of Dave and Sam (the two gorgeous friendly dogs that work there) in a locket if I go to war to remind me of what I am fighting for. Staff helpful and friendly ! If you don’t pop in while driving by you WILL REGRET IT.

In this serene environment lies a very calm and a vintage looking place, neatly maintained. The Lady is very friendly and welcoming. Very vast collection of novels. Absolutely loved the ambience and unbelievable to see such collections and such a place in the interior roads in Big Sur. Book lovers must visit, we bought three books and I'm excited to read.

A sanctuary for dreamers and free spirits. The Henry Miller Memorial Library is one of Big Sur’s most soulful landmarks — part bookstore, part gallery, part gathering place. Tucked beneath towering redwoods, it’s a celebration of art, literature, and the untamed creative spirit that defined Miller’s life. Visitors can browse rare books, linger among sculptures, or sit beneath the trees listening to live music or the quiet hum of nature. It’s more than a memorial — it’s a living embodiment of Big Sur’s bohemian heart, where inspiration feels as natural as the coastal breeze.

Stopped here on a road trip. The people in the front gifted me and my brother a scone when we stopped for gas. Unbelievably nice people, thank you so much. The ambiance is also spectacular, and the wildlife around is very magical. Will hopefully return some day, much love from Argentina!

Great place to stop by for some coffee and pastries. We’ve only had breakfast here and it’s really nice place to sit down and have coffee. Haven’t been around for their dinners as we usually stop by during start of a hike. Their pastries are more expensive than most places so heads up on that. We had the bacon bow tie and ham and cheese croissants. Mochas and lattes for coffee. Customer service is okay , parking can get tough during peak periods of the am.

Had a fantastic dinner here that included fresh, creative flavours in a cozy and inviting setting. Staff were incredibly attentive and we loved the variety of options. Definitely on the pricier end for dinner but absolutely worth it, as is the wine!

Nestled in the heart of Big Sur, this bakery is a true gem worth discovering. For us it was a quick stop though definitely would recommend to take some time and visit the bakery in peace and enjoy their offerings. They have ample parking spots for guests moving in and out though we realized that after we had parked outside Big Sur Deli (right next door) though it turned out to be a bit of an incline walk to the bakery which was all fun. On the way to the bakery you do see a fully functional Shell gas station (though it can turn out to be a costly tank fill) that features an air and water station as well. As we approached the Big Sur Bakery, we were immediately drawn to its rustic and inviting exterior. The bakery's warm, cozy interior with wooden furnishings and a welcoming fireplace creates a delightful atmosphere. The open kitchen adds a sense of transparency, allowing guests to watch the skilled bakers in action. The staff at Big Sur Bakery were very friendly and definitely helped us with our questions with the menu. We ordered a coffee and and ice-tea since we were trying to do a very quick stop as we had a long day planned ahead of us. Hopefully we get to taste more of their offerings in our next visit. Cheers!!

My friend and I stumbled upon this place only to have one of the best dinners I have ever had in my life (quite possibly the best). The ambience is cozy and magical. Our server was excellent and we had the pleasure of meeting chef Matt who was lovely! 10/10 would recommend and I can't wait to come back!

One of my favorite restaurants in Big Sur. If I am in the area, I stop here every time. Dinners are wonderful and the staff is super friendly and helpful. All of the dishes are made with great care. I had the Salmon with Potato Dumplings and my wife had the Roast Chicken. Both were excellent! No one of the Big Sur "big name" restaurants, but don't miss this place! Recommend making reservations for dinner.

A well-known spot that lives up to the reputation. Very cozy woodsy ambiance with really cute indoor and outdoor seating, including several small terraces. The food is pricey - $20 for a breakfast sandwich - but very tasty and more affordable than many nearby options. Don’t skip the vanilla cream bun, I could have eaten 4!

Delicious bakery! Absolutely a must stop. Their pastries are all delicious - would say this is one of the top 10 croissants I have had. Heads up they don't have much other than pastries so not a full on brunch spot pending what you are looking for. Coffee is also good. Also not a lot of gluten free options so be aware.

Californian restaurant
Bar
Big Sur Roadhouse, located within the Glen Oaks Motor Lodge, offers a modern-rustic setting where guests can savor seasonal, locally sourced Californian cuisine throughout the day. The restaurant stands out for its sophisticated and artfully presented meats and seafood, prepared using traditional methods but infused with global flavors and accompaniments. Designed by San Francisco's Steve Justrich, the restaurant provides a unique and fitting environment for its Big Sur location.
Big Sur Roadhouse turned out to be an incredible hidden gem for lunch! While the drive along Highway 1 means losing cell service for a bit, the restaurant is easy to spot right off the main road—no GPS needed. I arrived around noon on a Saturday, and while other nearby spots were packed, there was still plenty of parking and open tables here. At first, the lack of a crowd made me hesitant, but wow, was I in for a treat! The food was out of this world. I ordered the Roadhouse burger with a side of fries, and both were absolutely phenomenal—easily some of the best I’ve ever had. The wait time was short, the setting was peaceful and surrounded by beautiful trees, and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. Next time I’m in the area, there’s no question—I’ll be stopping by again. I seriously can’t recommend this place enough!

Hidden gem on Highway 1. Dining options include indoor and picnic/lounge areas in front and back. Oh man, the pulled pork was good (has coles slaw) and shoe string fries are excellent. Beer options include a couple of taps and bottles/cans.
James N — Google review
Gorgeous place to have breakfast or brunch with fresh, local ingredients! Great coffee and cozy outdoor area. Cell phone service is not great down Hwy 1, but it's located conveniently right off the main road so you won't miss it. Will come back again!

Stylish yet relaxed — the perfect Big Sur dining experience. Big Sur Roadhouse blends local charm with a fresh, modern twist, offering California-inspired dishes that celebrate the region’s ingredients and laid-back vibe. The menu is creative without being pretentious, and the atmosphere — all wood, stone, and natural light — makes you feel instantly at home among the redwoods. Whether you’re stopping for brunch, a leisurely lunch, or a glass of wine by the fire, this is one of those places that captures the essence of Big Sur: warm, welcoming, and quietly unforgettable.

Decent food and a great dog friendly patio with beautiful views of the trees and nearby creek. Unfortunately a misunderstanding led to an older lady treating my fiance like a criminal. This left a sour taste in our mouths and we probably won't visit this place again.

Stopped here for a quick lunch before our hike at Pfeiffer State Park. It was clean, modern, and the food was fresh. They had a cute outdoor area in the front and off the back to eat.

Partington Cove is a hidden gem along the Big Sur coast, accessible by a dirt trail, wooden bridge, and tunnel. The area offers two hiking options: one leading to the rocky mouth of Partington Creek and a small beach, while the other takes you through an historic 60-ft tunnel to a cove with rusty ruins of an old ship-loading apparatus from the tanoak-logging industry.
Absolutely stunning views. Note this does NOT have beach access - we got confused seeing other photos on here. Worth the trek down the hill though!

Came here with my family early morning to do a small hike to check out the coast for the first time. It was very foggy out early morning and there were some rock slides going on in the area. We originally went to check out the trail across from the Julia Pheiffer Burns State Park, but it was closed. We ended up stopping here at the cove and it was awesome. Got to see some squirrels and all kinds of birds and more. I also appreciate seeing all of the native flowers along the trail, very pretty. This trail had a cool tunnel to walk through and had a cool view and area to walk on the other side. A good spot to come and check out!!😎

Beautiful hike, but exhausting walking down and up to get to the view!! Bring water!!

Fully grateful for offering access to the public. It's not within any parks, but along the CA Route 1 and thus no need to book tickets. There are so many such canyons along the way. I bet each would be worthwhile for exploring. Make a stop along the highway, and then hike down to the shore. It's so beautiful. Kids can access ocean water. There is a giant rock sitting in the middle of the U-shaped canyon. You sit on top and stear at the vast ocean and relax. There is a 'steaming' hole along the rock cliff, adding a bit sweet surprise to the scene. There is natural wonders in addition to a tunnel to go through the inner side of the mountain. there is trails to hike up to the mountains too.

An absolute must-visit location. Absolutely gorgeous sunset views along an easy hike from the shoulder of US-1 down to the water. Plenty of parking on the Monday after Christmas with 3/4 of the space empty for a sunset visit. Only saw 5-6 other parties in the cove area after making our way down. Extremely under-rated gem that is probably the highlight of the attractions in Big Sur. Beautiful rocky cliffs with a broad view of the water with a sunset on the horizon. Even caught a flock of birds seemingly migrating for the winter in a V formation.
Victor W — Google review
What an AWESOME low key spot. It’s roughly +/- 300’ elevation drop down to the cove. There’s 3 trails, the main one leading to a rocky beach with a fresh water small river running into the ocean. The sunlight plays with the cove so it’s great for photos. Another trail leads through a TUNNEL out into another awesome cove! You can see otters from time to time, awesome awesome spot
Daniel O — Google review
Short hike to the Cove. The coastline is so beautiful! The water is amazing. If you keep going past where most people stop to enjoy the scenery, you'll get even a better view. And your reward is solitude! Keep going around the rocks, find a spot and hopefully it is sunny enough to enjoy the rays.
Bon M — Google review
Really cool little hike, I almost don't want to post this so fewer people find it! Freshwater stream headed through redwoods down to the cove, a wooden bridge and tunnel, and some nice tidepools filled with life. I went just after the crazy winter storms and the trail after the tunnel was washed out, will have to come back and finish the hike.

Fine dining restaurant
Restaurant
Sierra Mar is a renowned restaurant located at the Post Ranch Inn, perched on a cliff 1,200 feet high with breathtaking views of the ocean. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer an unforgettable dining experience, especially during sunset. The menu features Californian cuisine with Asian influences, offering unique dishes like halibut in green curry sauce and yellowfin tuna with togarashi mayo. Executive Chef John Cox presents inquisitive food creations highlighting local ingredients and culture.
The view at Sierra Mar was awesome and we went on a cloudy day. It would have been that much more amazing on a sunny day. We saw some condors flying around during our lunch. The staff were very attentive. If you’re in the Big Sur area, be sure to stop by. The signs to the parking are weren’t great but maybe it was partially because we were running late. Be warned there is essentially no cell service so plan accordingly.
H D — Google review
What can I say! I love the view and the average, but it could be better. Me and friend booked a table at 7:45pm for a dinner and we came early around 7:10pm. However, we had to wait until 8:30pm for my table to be ready which was 45m past my reservation. Not even an apologize from the receptionist, we were just waiting and hopelessly waiting outside and it's getting cold and colder. Finally got our table at 8:30pm and they put us in a right next to the door when people walking in and out the balcony to check the view. Feeling we were in a Zoo not a fancy restaurant lol 2.5 hours from where we live to get there, the experience was the worse than I ever had. Food came out around 9:15pm and we just wanted to finish it and drove back as soon as possible (which took me another 2.5 hours) $185/ person plus tax and tips. Food was average. Service at the table was okay If you're thinking about looking this place for a special occasion, please save your money, time and energy for better options out there. We left and barely enjoyed the dinner, both of us felt stressed after the long wait of times.
Evon T — Google review
Wow! What a meal! And the view of the sunset was equal to the delicious food. The service throughout the meal was top level. My husband started with some sort of squash salad followed by a King Salmon. Both were amazing. I got the tasting menu which did not disappoint. Each small, beautiful bite was bursting with unique flavor. The abalone ssam was uniquely extraordinary. I highly recommend for a special evening.
H N — Google review
We were really looking forward to dining at Sierra Mar, but the experience fell short of expectations. The restaurant is clearly designed around its spectacular view, yet in the winter months when dinner starts after sunset, that view simply isn’t part of the experience. Without it, the atmosphere feels a bit flat. There was no wine pairing offered, which was surprising for a restaurant of this level, and the service felt unenthusiastic, polite, but not particularly warm or knowledgeable about the dishes. The food itself wasn’t bad, but it lacked inspiration or excitement. I was a bit put off by one course, a small cup of hen consommé, because it felt more like a placeholder than part of a fine dining menu. We’ve been fortunate to dine at some truly exceptional restaurants around the world, and while Sierra Mar wasn’t terrible, it didn’t live up to its reputation. Overall, it was an underwhelming evening at a place that seems to rely a bit too heavily on its view. Though I’m sure it is spectacular when visible…

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants on planet earth. There is nothing like it. The combination of quality service and culinary wizardry, set in a God-tier cinematic location is beyond comparison.

This last visit, I went with my parents and a neighbor of theirs who just lost her husband. We met on a weekend for brunch. The ocean views from the dining room are as much of the meal as the food. Eggs Benedict had a silky hollandaise and fresh herbs. It was peaceful and pretty, but I kind of wished the portions were heartier for the price.

The food was amazing, especially loved the sea food course we had, the vibes were impeccable and the service was amazing thanks to Hector, we mentioned a item from the seafood course we liked then he brought us out an extra later on the meal

Can’t beat the views. Had a new bartender and the spicy margarita was only sweet - not worth $27. Hostess seemed overwhelmed even though 70% of the restaurant was empty Tasting menu was good but not spectacular. Would stay at post ranch inn again but may not splurge - sunset was pretty.

Cafe Kevah, located just below the renowned Nepenthe restaurant, offers a relaxed dining experience with California cuisine and stunning ocean views from its outdoor terrace. The cafe is owned by the Fassett family and exudes a laid-back Big Sur vibe with its colorful umbrellas, open-air dining, and bohemian-chic decor. Visitors can also explore The Phoenix Shop at Nepenthe for artwork, fabrics, aromatherapy products, and unique jewelry.
I came here during my visit to Big Sur and it is a MUST. I saw somebody mention their cappuccino wasn’t good and I disagree. I thoroughly enjoyed my americano that I got and the breakfast burrito was massive and very good. You will not be disappointed if you come here!

Maybe the worst cappuccino I have ever had. I feel like you have to try to make it that bad. The views are great though which is why most people come here but you can get good views anywhere in Big Sur. I don’t think this place is worth it by any means.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cafe Kevah is an absolute gem in Big Sur! The location is breathtaking, with stunning views of the coastline that make it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and it feels like a peaceful retreat away from the busy world. The food and drinks are just as amazing as the view! The pastries are fresh and delicious, and the coffee is rich and flavorful – definitely some of the best I’ve had along the coast. Their breakfast options are fantastic, especially if you enjoy a hearty meal to start your day. The staff is warm and friendly, making you feel welcome the moment you arrive. They are quick, attentive, and genuinely care about giving you a great experience. If you’re visiting Big Sur, Cafe Kevah is a must-stop. A superb place to stop on Highway 1. The sandwiches and drinks are very good and well served. But what makes this place special is the incredible view of the Pacific Ocean. There may be a bit of a wait during tourist season, but the place is so pleasant that it's not a problem.

The view is simply breathtaking. Honestly the food could be half as good and I’d continue coming here, but if you do stop by for breakfast the burrito is fantastic. It’s simply a magical place and it feels like the people who work here know it. I just can’t wait for the PCH to eventually open back up to make getting here easier. It’s been too long!

What a treat! We randomly pulled over while driving Big Sur and stopped here. We both ordered sandwiches. When we saw giant, fresh vibrant salads going out we immediately wished we'd ordered those and were more than delighted to discover the fabulous sandwiches also came with salads. Nice view.

Cafe Kevah is the Cafe attached to Nepenthe. If you've been to Big Sur before you know you will pay a premium no matter where you eat. We had eaten the day prior at River Inn and were incredibly disappointed with the service and food for the price point. Cafe Kevah was the opposite. The staff was incredibly friendly. The food, while still paying a premium, was fresh, well prepared, and appealingly plated. We ordered the classic eggs benedict, mixed berry cheese pastry, side of bacon, oj and cappuccino. The benedict and home fries were delicious. The side of fresh oranges and ample grapes were a nice touch. The pastry was large and fresh. Cappuccinos were great. For $7, we had hoped the oj would be fresh squeezed, but didn't seem to be. Ultimately though you don't go here for the food. You go here for the view. THE VIEW!! Go here for the view. Did I mention the view? If you are in Big Sur this is a must stop.

Restaurant
The Restaurant at Big Sur River Inn is a rustic eatery nestled among the redwoods, offering a predominantly American menu with highlights like old-fashioned apple pie. For a hearty start to your day, indulge in strong coffee, local eggs, and house-made sourdough toast at the quirky restaurant located behind the gas station. Additionally, they serve dinner including exceptional wood-fired pizza.
What an absolute gem. It was 97 degrees back home in Walnut Creek so we hit the central coast and couldn’t have found a better place to cool off under the trees with our feet in the water. Granted, we only had a beer but wow, we will absolutely be back. Great place to chat with friends in the water or alone with a good book.

An absolutely beautiful area. Wow. We did not stay here for our trip, but man did we want to come back to stay here. It looks great. The river chairs, come on now! Sounds like a dream. We did stop by the store to get some souvenirs and, the staff was helpful with information. Their sand sculpture was cool. We went over to the gas station just to check out the tiny islands, but we found awesome ice cream. A cool roadside spot if you are driving through, or seemingly a really awesome spot to spend a day or two. The restaurant also seemed to have delicious smells.

We had an incredible lunch at the Big Sur River Inn Restaurant, sitting on the balcony overlooking the river—absolutely beautiful setting. The food was amazing, the service was top-notch, and the whole atmosphere made for a perfect stop on our trip. What made the experience even more memorable was what happened after. After lunch, we walked down to the river where they have chairs set up right in the water—such a peaceful and unique touch. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my wallet had slipped out of my pocket while relaxing there. It wasn’t until we got all the way back home that I realized it was gone. A few days later, I received a message on Facebook from someone at the River Inn letting me know my wallet had been found and turned in. They went out of their way to track me down, confirm it was mine, and even shipped it back to me. That level of kindness and integrity is rare—and it says so much about the people who work there. Huge thank you to the team at Big Sur River Inn. I’m incredibly grateful, and I’ll absolutely be back.
Dillon L — Google review
Overall this is a good place to enjoy some lunch and a drink after a long hike. You get to dine either inside with a view of the river, or outside on the river. The Inn has set up chairs in the water for you to sit and enjoy the water on your feet, while you eat or just relax. Seating is limited in the river, so you may need to be patient, but the quiet of the water and the birds chirping around is very relaxing.

We spent hours here: lunch, walking around, soaking our hiking tired feet in the cold river, enjoying beverages, talking story to old folk. Food was delicious: ceviche, chicken fajitas, mango margarita. Pricy but worth the scenery. Staff was pleasant. Family environment all around the river kids playing in nature like they should.

For being one of the very few food options in Big Sur, it was a nice surprise to find this place. The Taphouse is half restaurant and half convenience store. It was pretty cool looking around the store while waiting for our food to come out. The menu was surprisingly sizeable, but the food was delicious! It was honestly some of the best onion rings I've ever had. Our sandwiches were also good as well. Though the service was very kind, it did take some time for our food to be received. But that was really the only gripe. Also note that it's a single bathroom out in the back, so be prepared to wait if there's a good amount of people. Otherwise, we were treated well and had a great lunch here!

Just a short drive down Highway 1, you'll find the enchanting Calla Lily Valley and Garrapata Beach. The valley is a hidden gem filled with hundreds of calla lilies that bloom every spring, typically between mid-February and mid-March. It's part of the broader Garrapata State Park but offers a unique experience. You can take a quick stop for some photos or embark on a 1.
Calla Lily Valley is an absolute hidden gem and a must-visit for nature lovers! Nestled along the California coast, this stunning valley bursts into bloom each spring, creating a breathtaking landscape of pure white calla lilies set against the backdrop of rolling green hills and the deep blue ocean. The hike to the valley is short and scenic, following a peaceful trail along a small creek that winds through the flowers. The moment you arrive, you're surrounded by thousands of delicate lilies, swaying gently in the breeze—it's like stepping into a fairytale. The sound of the nearby waves crashing against the shore adds to the tranquil atmosphere, making it an incredible spot to relax and take in the beauty of nature. For the best experience, visit in March or early April when the flowers are in full bloom. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes since the trail can get muddy, and bring a camera—you'll want to capture every moment of this breathtaking scene! Whether you're a photographer, a hiker, or just someone who loves exploring beautiful places, Calla Lily Valley is an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!

Pretty valley with lilies at the bottom before the ocean/beach. It’s a mild 5-10min walk to the bottom on a dirt road from the “North” entrance there is an entrance South of the valley as well. Recommend shoes cause it can get muddy but lots of people were in sandals as well. I would be comfortable taking kids on this trail and consider taking an older relative who can do stairs. You don’t have to go over the makeshift bridges but will have more access to different sections if you do.
Stephanie N — Google review
Great spot. Can get a bit too busy during peak season. We were able to enjoy a few lies but also saw people cutting them. Appalling! We spend our time here after a rainy night so the trail, especially the rates near the lilies was a bit wet. Bring hiking shoes or some shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. The whole experience around this area is about 1-2 hours if you also go around the different trails. Enjoy and protect the area!

Amazing beach and valley to explore on the way down the 1. Visiting the first week of June, there were only 2 lilies left, so we got very lucky to see them. The other side of the road is a fantastic Mountain View where cows graze at the base. Parking is free on the roadside (if available space).

Nice beach after short trail, Calla Lily are highlight of the beach. Also spotted other beautiful flowers on trail. In April 2025, Also spotted thousands of dead Velella Velella, read about it to know why they are dying and dead shells are coming to shore. No restrooms. The beach is really clean and quiet.

Can’t believe such a place in the world. Garrapata Beach is a hidden gem along California’s Big Sur coastline, offering unspoiled natural beauty and a sense of tranquility. This rugged beach features golden sands, dramatic cliffs, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s perfect for a peaceful stroll, photography, or simply enjoying the crashing waves. The nearby Garrapata State Park provides hiking trails with breathtaking coastal and canyon scenery. While the beach is less crowded than others in Big Sur, its secluded vibe adds to the charm. Just be prepared for limited amenities and enjoy the raw, untouched beauty of this coastal treasure.
Aitana B — Google review
Beautiful beach with stunning views and big waves, steps lead down to the shore and Calla lily, a little difficult to walk between the lily bushes as the ground is wet from the stream going between the lilies, in some places the mud is very slippery and deep, between the lily bushes there are many homemade bridges, overall it was not a difficult descent and it is definitely worth it. An incredible feeling of the beauty of pristine nature

Pine Ridge Trail!! This is not an easy hike to Sykes and back from the Big Sur station. I'm getting it done in about 5.5hrs. Expect to be out there multiple days unless you are trail running. Bring a small water filter. PACK YOUR TRASH OUT!!
Totaan — Google review
Pine Ridge trail starts at the Big Sur Station. There's a parking lot ($10 per day) self paid cash or pay at the office if open. Then self register with the US Forest Service kiosk before you start your hike. It's a 10 miles (strenuous level) to Sikes campground each way, where the very popular Hot Springs are located. Expect groups of hikers camping & bathing. Due to the elevation gain this hike is not for beginners and water, food & cold weather protection must be carried. It gets cold at night (40°F) in October, and hot around noon (80°F). There are 2 Big Sur river crossings (bring extra socks in case you fall since there are not bridges) The trail is well maintained (thank you volunteers!) and the views are gorgeous after you reach high elevations. But it's not easy to follow after the first river crossing. There's a shorter & easy variant to the lookout for those that want a quick hike. There are 2 restrooms at the parking lot.

A natural treasure we're so lucky to have here on the Central Coast. Protected/maintained by an army of volunteers who keep the trails in great shape for hikers to enjoy year round. I really appreciate all they do to keep Big Sur wild! 🌲🐿️🍃🦋🌾🦎🪶🌼🐝

You can take your dog on pin ridge trail which is what we did. There are not a lot of places to hike with your dog in Big Sur so this is a great find. Bring cash for the self-registration parking lot.

Free parking and easy accesss every one should see these strange animals. Farting. Scratching throwing sand on themselves and in there neighbors face. Even saw some squirming over the others...noses bent over backwards in disappaproval.. They were moulting when we visited.. Nature's clowns for sure.

Point Sur State Historic Park is home to a historic light station that has been in operation since 1889. The park offers guided tours and features a visitor center, providing visitors with an educational experience about the lighthouse's role on the coastline. Additionally, the park boasts the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge, one of the tallest single-span concrete bridges in the world and a recognizable landmark featured in various media.
A hidden gem along the California coast, offering a deep sense of peace. Perched on a rugged cliff, the views are breathtaking, with the Pacific stretching out endlessly. The quiet, untouched beauty of the area makes it the perfect place to step away from the world and immerse yourself. There’s something calming about just being there, surrounded by the raw coastal landscape.

We didn’t know what to expect, but we’re thrilled by this experience. Unique, interesting, and gorgeous. Our volunteer docent Tyren was exceptional. This could easily be the highlight of our trip to Big Sur. Highly recommend. We arrived at 9:15 and were third in line.

A hauntingly beautiful landmark rising straight from the sea. Point Sur State Historic Park is one of the most unforgettable sights along the California coast — a dramatic volcanic rock crowned by a historic lighthouse that has guarded mariners for over a century. The guided tours are fascinating, offering stories of shipwrecks, isolation, and life atop the windswept point, all while surrounded by breathtaking ocean views in every direction. Even from Highway 1, the sight of the lighthouse against the sky feels almost otherworldly. It’s history, mystery, and natural beauty all in one — a must-see stop in Big Sur.

It was cold and rainy the day that I went, so I didn't get to fully enjoy it like I wanted to. But it was so beautiful and scenic that I had a blast overall I'll definitely go back when I'm up in NorCal and when the weather permits!

Beautiful walking trails and no difficulties for people with medium mobility issues (use of a cane for example).

Atleast once in your lifetime. It's worth it. There's a fee but it's a necessity to keep the park running and buildings well preserved. The tour guides are very knowledgeable too and nice!
Town T — Google review
It's a unique experience along the coast highway. We were there on Wednesday morning, queued on 9:45, the park ranger closed the gate as soon as no more car waiting , so you don't wanna have the traffic jam. It's the guided tour by two volunteers. They divided us into two groups of around 13 of each. Slowly walking towards the top with experienced stories shared with us. They will charge $12 per person after the tour, which I think it's lowest price for a nice guided tour. You also have the chance to buy some souvenir on the top. They will escort everyone out together after 2 and half hour tour.

Deli
Nestled in the heart of Big Sur next to the post office, Big Sur Deli has been a beloved family-owned establishment for over 25 years. It's a full-service deli offering an array of delectable dishes at reasonable prices. From made-to-order sandwiches and specialty burritos to savory BBQ chicken and flavorful calzones, there's something for every palate. The cozy eatery also serves up mouthwatering fry chicken and burgers that are not to be missed.
Stopped in tonight and man, are we glad we chose Big Sur Deli to eat. The employee working the counter was kind and provided excellent customer service. I got the vegetable pesto panini (and added avocado, which I STRONGLY recommend doing) and my husband got the pastrami sandwich. We both were surprised by how delicious are sandwiches were and completely full by the end of it! No sides necessary (; though we did get a muffin each for later.
Nomad L — Google review
very cute! the bathroom was pretty clean too. the guy who was helping us out at the counter seems kinda rude tho. not sure why there were also a lot of corvetts
Ari — Google review
The sandwiches were excellent. I thought the prices were a little high, until I saw the size of the sandwiches. They were easily two good sized meals each. I had mine on the sourdough roll which was wonderful.
Amanda G — Google review
I wish I could’ve gotten one of each sandwich! We took these to-go to eat on our hike and it was perfect! They are huge. The Casanova was delicious. They also a ton of cute souvenirs, great beer and snack selection!
Maddie B — Google review
I had heard that the Big Sur Deli was the place to stop for a hearty meal on cold mornings and I was not disappointed. I was slightly late to breakfast but they whipped me up a breakfast burrito designed for a king (or at least a prince who was down on his luck). I also sampled a delectable double chocolate muffin that I washed down with some chocolate milk for good measure. There were some other options under glass that looked rather good but that will have to wait for another pass. The staff were very kind and knew what they were doing. The Deli itself has some great magnets as well and is attached to the a tasting room where you can sample local beers and wines. I bought a sampling of IPA’s to try while sitting around the fire with/and for my friends, their selection was large and varied. I highly suggest grabbing a post card and utilizing the Big Sur Post Office located next store. It’s a classy move and it costs under a dollar to make someone’s day. I will definitely be stopping at the Big Sur Deli on my next ride through.
Nicholas L — Google review
Heard this was one of the premiere spots to get sandwiches and food in general at Big Sur. The sandwich was huge and went way above expectations. I ordered a Turkey Sandwich with Swirled Rye bread and it had mayonnaise, dijon mustard, lettuce and tomato. We also ordered a Tuna Salad sandwich with sourdough and it also had mayonnaise, dijon mustard, lettuce and tomato. Nice sandwiches to enjoy the amazing scenery of Big Sur.
Josh B — Google review
I stopped in a little before the taproom opened so I grabbed a sandwich ($10), the up in smoke and a craft beer and had a picnic in Big Sur State Park. The sandwich was amazing nd filling. They also have a great craft beer selection in their coolers. Really hit the spot and a perfect stop after some hiking or a day driving down Highway 1.
Trypp A — Google review
The deli and taphouse have a variety of vegan & vegetarian food options to choose from. We tried enchiladas for dinner and plant based chorizo burrito for breakfast. Both were delicious. The portion size is quite large. Their little general store has souvenirs, basic grocery and camp supplies.

COAST Big Sur, formerly known as Coast Gallery, is a unique and historically rich venue in Big Sur. It was founded in 1958 as a haven for post-World War II artists and writers, and its most distinctive feature is the repurposed redwood water tanks that now serve as an innovative gallery space. The venue also includes a rooftop cafe offering espresso and sandwiches.
Food was amazing and just right for the scenery, the servers were so professional and polite. I had to ask myself which year I was in lol. Would bring my family to this amazing delicious dinery for a relaxing one of a kind evening! Thank you Coastal for providing excellent service to Big Sur ❤️

Parking is difficult here. There are spaces in front of the cafe and on the street, but not much to work with. Be careful because cars come fast around the corner, so be safe. Honestly, yes, it's a beautiful area, view, and gallery, but food menu options for the price point, in my opinion, are not worth it and are very limited in options. I would say stop here for a coffee/beverage and a light snack/meal if you aren't hungry. But, if you are hungry, grab a filling meal elsewhere. If you are unable to find parking, it's not worth the stress to wait around. If it's busy, the line to order can also be long. If you do stick around, walk around to see art all over the grounds. Grab a coffee. Seating outside had a beautiful view. Seating is open seating and first come, first served. There is seating inside, outside, and in their courtyard area.
Tania S — Google review
Foods and service were great. I got pour over coffee, cheese melt and vanilla ice cream, all the things I got were delicious. For the side note, I visited COAST last March (it was raining!)- since the cafe was located nearby cliff/sea..it was pretty chill 😂. I recommend to visit the cafe during summer (or early fall).
Claire H — Google review
Great for a quick lunch in Big Sur. Hot coffee and ice cream are better than meals. There is an expansive pacific sea view, and the small valley visible through the round window inside is pretty.
Irene K — Google review
Beautiful cafe with ample seating indoors and outside. Lots of choices for drinks including alcoholic beverages but food menu is rather limited. If you like seeds and grains and vegan stuff then this might appeal to you. We tried also their chocolate vanilla ice cream but it was just vanilla with chocolate crumbles. No public wifi, not sure about Verizon but no AT&T or T-mobile reception here. Staff are great. Parking space for a few cars. Please read the sign and don’t try to enter what it says “exit only”.
Dru L — Google review
Such a wonderful spot in the middle of Big Sur. The employees were so kind, and the food is fresh and delicious. I got the iced lavender vanilla coffee, fresh sourdough, and butternut squash butter. The upstairs patio looking out onto the ocean is wonderful and has plenty of seating. Cute interior seating and shop too! Will definitely come again next time I’m in Big Sur!
Claire B — Google review
Route 1 is one of the prettiest scenic roads I have been on before and we just stopped by this place at random, but it turned out to be quite good. It has an art gallery and gift shop inside, although everything there was too expensive for my budget. The Cafe had a very small selection of food, but the quality was superb. They have outside seating with views of the pacific ocean, as well as seating in and around the building. Very artistic and rustic vibes every where in the decor, you will find air plant walls, a small waterfall, wooden sculpted furniture, and much more for a cozy spot if you are travelling along Route 1.
Steven K — Google review
This may be the best coffee-with-a-view experience I’ve had. Their menu is somewhat limited, and they don’t offer substitutions or changes to orders, but the coffee is really good. It has a sculpture gallery downstairs that is beautiful, and the layout is asymmetrical yet comfortable. The top terrace has an incredible view of a bend in Highway 1 and the ocean beyond. If you’re looking to get some caffeine while you explore the trails and sights in Big Sur, then you need to stop here.

Park
Garrapata State Park Bluff Trail is a hidden gem in Big Sur, offering a secluded and picturesque coastal walk just off the highway. This short 15-minute trail provides stunning views of the coast and even features a waterfall. Nearby attractions include Garrapata Beach with its rugged rocks and waves, perfect for photography sessions. The area is known for its fog, adding an ethereal quality to the landscape. Soberanes Canyon Trail offers more walking trails with breathtaking coastal scenery and wildflowers.
Great place to unwind and immerse in nature with amazing views of Pacific Ocean. One can have a picnic or just stop on your way spend an hour or more. Trails are extremely well maintained with easy access allowing visitors with multiple options. Took about less than 2 hours to cover main marked trails. People were exploring further by reaching up the cliffs and/or going down to the water. Though there is a sign on PCH 1 south, one could miss it; however one can get curious and stop seeing many parked cars. Tip: PCH 1 drive - it’s worth stopping when you see many cars parked.
Info S — Google review
There is a well-maintained walking path along the coastline atop a cliff. It is close to a campsite and has portable restrooms. There are both main trails and smaller paths. However, if you take one of the smaller paths, some may lead to steep drop-offs, so it is recommended to leave before sunset.

A must stop on the way to explore Big Sur. Perfect settings for portraiture with long lenses to leverage some background compression. Loved my family photos there. Wonderful hike.
Muhaimeinul K — Google review
Stunning scenery. Trail goes along the cliffs above the ocean with the Mountains behind. It was windy but the path was packed and pretty leveled so it wasn't an issue for my father's ankle. There is limited parking here and you have to cross highway 1 so be careful! There is a pretty little waterfall at the bridge and wildflowers everywhere! I like that there is a trail up to the mountains from the same parking area in case you wanted to see something a bit different and try a more challenging hike.
Laurel C — Google review
This is a great stop for short hike or over an hour hike if you like. The trail connects to Soberanes point. Great views of the ocean and a beautiful foot bridge over a waterfall. No access to the beach here.

Maiden Publick House, located in Big Sur, is a new addition to the area's drinking and dining scene. Despite the existing popular options, this taphouse has managed to carve out its own niche with its character and affordability. The establishment offers a variety of local Northern California beers on tap and in bottles, reflecting the season of visit. The food menu exceeds typical pub fare, with standout items like Garlic Fries.
The beer here is really great and really reflects the season you visit. As I was visiting in summer, most of the items they had on tap were ales and IPAs (I was looking for a porter, lager, or stout). I'm not sure how they make their Garlic Fries, but those are utterly fantastic and a must have when you visit. The staff are also quite friendly.
Charles C — Google review
If I was a local, this would be my place.  It's one of the very few affordable places in Big Sur.  That's what first attracted us.  Then I saw the beer list.  Yes, yes please.  A handful of good taps and many bottles, plenty of  local Northern California represented. Food was good too; better than average pub food.  But for me though, it was the beer and the good people working there.

Hubby and I stopped in to rest while visiting the Big Sur area, Ashley was an awesome host and bar keep. Great food, great drink, and we came back another two times while on our one week vacation in Big Sur. I highly recommend the roast beef and brie sandwich for lunch. AWESOME! We will definitely return the next time we're traveling that way.

One of my favorite spots in Big Sur. Amazing selection of beers. The bar countertop is a gorgeous piece of redwood burl crafted by a well known local who cuts the downed tree into timbers and makes fine furniture from them. Theres an outdoor seating area behind the bar which is very nice.

Disclaimer: I didn't have food, so I can't base this review on that. On the way to camp in Big Sur, buddies needed a bite to eat, I only had a beer though. Good vibe, great bartender with a great playlist. Also a big selection of beer!

This is my #1 stop to get a cold beer after a hot hike in the wilderness of Big Sur. The bar food at Maiden Publick House is on point, the chicken wings are always a solid choice and so are the fried mac and cheese bites. They have an array of beer to choose from featuring regional drinks on tap and seasonal specials too.

The Sur House is a warm and woodsy upscale restaurant in Big Sur, offering locally-sourced American cuisine with stunning ocean views from its terrace. The menu features creatively prepared dishes made with locally sourced ingredients and is complemented by a fine wine list. The restaurant is located within the Ventana property, about 30 miles south of Monterey along Highway 1, and offers breathtaking views of California's iconic landscapes.
What a beautiful restaurant! We ate here three times total for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For dinner, it took quite awhile to get our main entree. Without us complaining or even bringing it up, our waiter proactively checked on us and offered us a free drink for the delay. The other two meals were great. The location is perfect, snd the views are stunning.
Logan W — Google review
My three days staying at Alila Ventana Big Sur have been one of the best three days of my life, and the Sur House is a big reason why. We came here every single day for our complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner as hotel guests. I believe that breakfast and lunch are for hotel guests only but Sur House is open for non-hotel guests for dinner time. Even if you are not staying at Alila, the Sur House is still worth the trek if you’re in Big Sur. The dining here is world class and I was told that the chef is actually from the Michelin restaurant nearby. Every single thing we ate was extraordinarily delicious, and believe me, we tried the whole menu during our stay! Below are some of my favorite selections from the menu for each meal. BREAKFAST — Bagel & Lox (colorful and IG worthy) — Egg Omelet (with fresh eggs from the onsite farm) LUNCH — Habanero wings (perfectly spiced) — Fish & Chips (fantastic fry, not too oily) — Churrasco (this steak is actually my favorite dish of our whole stay) — Market Fish (ours was a beautifully cooked salmon) — Coconut sorbet (DO NOT SKIP THIS!) DINNER — The Hen Egg (sounds simple but has big flavor) — Spanish Octopus (soooo tender) — Squid Ink Spaghetti (but honestly all the pastas are amazing) — Steak, Salmon or Halibut (are the best because for me the poultry options were a bit dry) All the desserts are great and we’ve tried them all, but I just cannot stop thinking about the coconut sorbet. It lives in my mind rent free. Not only was the food excellent, the service was equally as amazing. Our server for most nights was Leo - he is fantastic. He always remembered our names and what we ordered and made sure to wish me a happy birthday. We really felt taken care of and seen. On nice days and nights, Sur House is located in a patio area of Alila Ventana and overlooks the huge blue ocean and Big Sur cliffs. It’s a really stunning sight especially at sunset. On days with very foggy or rainy weather, the party is moved indoors for a more romantic, cozy, wood surroundings dining vibe. I will be dreaming about Alila Ventana and the Sur House for a long time!
Michelle T — Google review
Went here from alila, it was one of the most incredible meals from recent memory. The best salad I’ve had, then some crazy egg dish with popcorn that also blew my mind. Both entrees were executed perfectly, and dessert and service were all stellar.

I had a wonderful meal here Sunday morning! The food was amazing, the cocktail was great and the view was stunning. Due to the heat they have been having problems with bees so I was unable to sit outside, however I asked for a table by the window and got it! My server, was very slow, but the kid who was running the food was great! All in all a fantastic experience to start my day!

What not to love about this restaurant? AMAZING views, Awesome staff, Delicious foods and GREAT service. I have nothing, BUT positive reviews for this resort, restaurant and staff. All the staff has done a beautiful job to accommodate and to provide the best quality and world-class experience to all guests. I definitely will return again. Many thanks to the bartenders, chefs and servers for being flexible and patient to provide us with great dishes / drinks / services. We greatly appreciate your artistic ability, dedication and hardwork to please your customers!!

Sur House at Alila Ventana Big Sur delivered one of the most unforgettable dining experiences we’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this place is something special. The setting alone is worth the visit-perched high above the Big Sur coastline, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding forest. It’s the kind of location that makes you pause and just take it all in. We dined there multiple times during our stay, and each meal felt like an event. In the morning, breakfast was served overlooking the cliffs as the fog and marine layer rolled in gently from the sea. It was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely breathtaking. By the evening, the sunset transformed the entire landscape into a warm, glowing canvas of colors. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while enjoying an incredible meal was truly unforgettable. The food was phenomenal. The campanelle pasta was a highlight-perfectly al dente, with a rich, savory sauce that brought everything together beautifully. The rib eye was one of the best steaks I’ve had anywhere-juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Every bite was memorable. Even the bread and small bites leading up to the main course were thoughtfully prepared and delicious. The pizzas were probably the weakest part of the menu, but even then they were still very good-just outshined by everything else. Service was top notch. Every member of the team was warm, welcoming, and attentive without ever being overbearing. They anticipated what we needed before we even asked, and made us feel completely at home. The overall atmosphere was relaxed and elegant, with just the right amount of refinement. Sur House isn’t just a restaurant-it’s an experience. It captures the essence of Big Sur: natural beauty, thoughtful hospitality, and extraordinary food. Whether you’re staying at Alila Ventana or simply passing through the coast, this place is absolutely worth a visit. One of our favorite meals in California, and a place we can’t wait to return to.
JonLuca D — Google review
the view is very good and food was delicious. they have a fireplace that not only smells great but also people can make smore there. the mussel soup is so good and that’s from someone who doesn’t eat seafood. the service is very good! the drink with a bubble on top tastes like soap water to us. they took the drink back with no questions asked and gave us a fat old fashioned instead. if you stay at the resort, the food is included but the alcohol isnt. there’s a trail that brings you from and back to the resort, but i think you can also call a golf cart to take you too.
Ari — Google review
A very pretty place, overlooking the Pacific Ocean - it‘s an elevated location secluded by forest. The tables at the front are limited :) so, be patient or come a bit later. I did not enjoy any food but it looked very well prepared, with the utmost diligence. Where is your coffee gone, though? I enjoyed two coffees; the taste of the coffee itself is very accommodating. What I did not enjoy was the amount of coffee you actually receive. I mentioned it to one of the waiters and she kind of understood what I meant before I said it … In detail, my two orders: 1. Cappucino: there was about 1/5 of the cup filled with coffee, the rest was the egg foam; yeah, I really like egg foam BUT I also like to have some coffee with it, please 2. Latte: strange enough, there was egg foam on it again, although less … hmm, a Latte with egg foam? Anyway, the amount of coffee was slightly better (1/3 of the cup) but still way on the low end of what you usually get in other high end places. Could you please serve some decent coffee if you already charge 8 USD per coffee? I think its not too much to ask …

I came here for a last minute dinner and was delightfully surprised by the prompt service. The food is delicious, and the king salmon is ah-mazing! It’s well suaved with a crispy cover. The steak is surprisingly tender too. One bummer is the bread - I wish the bread is softer. Overall, I enjoyed the meal a ton and came back for lunch the next day (again). The salmon didn’t disappoint!

Amazing place. Service is top notch, food is super delicious on the level of Michelin star, cozy atmosphere and great vibe of Carmel valley. somewhat pricey but in my opinion worth it. We got ahi tuna for appetiser, salmon, butternut squash ravioli for main dishes and both were amazing. For desert we got fig cheesecake with pistachios and it was mind blowing. Nice wine selection and some draft beers. very special place!

Phenomenal place. Just shy of a Michelin star in my opinion. Ingredients are fresh and stay truthful to their flavors. Nothing is pretentious. It is just good food presented in an upscale, classy manner. The food is a bit subdued for the atmosphere but perhaps that's what the chef is going for. I couldn't ask for a better dinner with friends and family. Will return just for Lucia.

This is the place to start planning all of your stops and find out what is open and what is not open. This is also a great place to use the bathroom it’s very clean. You can also get all of your parking passes or camping permits. You should also make a stop on the way out so you can pick up your souvenirs.

Stopped here for some maps and information. The staff (he) here was super friendly. He even provided us with a passport stamp as a memory of visiting Big Sur.

An amazing place. We didn't know you could camp there - there are designated camping spots. At the entrance there are plaques that tell you the dangers (poison ivy, rattlesnakes etc...) with diagrams. The trails are marked - though the trail for the waterfalls is a little confusing. For the waterfall, you have to walk over what looks like fallen logs to cross over to continue the trail - we did not do that. But, we did follow the trail all the way to the limekiln and that was beautiful. There is a wonderful stream throughout the woods that you can follow as well. There are benches to sit on at various viewing spots.

Located in Big Sur, the Big Sur River Inn General Store is a historic property that serves as the area's first hotel and restaurant. It also functions as a much-needed stop for essential supplies while driving through Big Sur. The general store offers a wide range of products, from camping supplies to local wines, made-to-order pizzas, and smoothies. The lodge and restaurant provide a rustic log cabin ambiance with indoor or outdoor dining options overlooking the river.
Our lodge in the middle of the night drive home was Big Sur. My family was frustrated to learn that a recent landslide had blocked a road and had to take a detour. So we decided to grab a bite to eat and drive out to survive, and we went in there without even thinking about ordering a sandwich. Oh my god, it was such a tough chicken sandwich to describe how I felt. An old lady at work made it for me. We baked the common bread and added some tough chicken and dark muggy leaves in between. I highly recommend it. It was a tough chicken sandwich.

A Must-Stop Spot in Big Sur! Every time we head down the coast, we make it a point to stop at the Big Sur Village General Store & Burrito Bar. The shop itself is super convenient—loaded with everything from road trip snacks and drinks to camping gear and cool local goodies. But the real highlight? The burritos! Fresh, huge, and customizable with all your favorite fillings. You can also go lighter and turn it into a hearty salad. We enjoyed ours while relaxing in Adirondack chairs right by the river—feet in the water, full bellies, total bliss. The staff was welcoming, the atmosphere laid-back, and the scenery unbeatable. Honestly, it was so good we didn’t even think to take a photo. This place deserves all five stars!

Great store with great price snacks (get their small batch pop corn). Breakfast menus may seem expensive at first ($13 for a burrito or egg sandwich to go) but the size is enormous. We got 2 burritos to-go thinking they were breakfast burritos size and they ended up bigger than Chipotle burrito. We got to pick all the different protein, eggs, and carbs going into it. They were so big that we could only finish one at a sit and ended up saving the other for lunch (worked out amazingly). Would recommend if you need quick bites being on the road.

Best breakfast burrito with bacon. We also had a sweet patry and coffee which were good. Staff was very nice. They also make hot sandwiches but only from 11:00am

The Chorizo burrito was on par with the fictional “meat tornado” from parks and recreation. Even better if you find a good spot on the 1 overlooking the coast and eat the burrito with a view.

Definitely worth checking out. It’s a roadside stop. Kitsch and wholesome and fun. Neat stuff and great food. If you’re out west and driving down the coast it’s a great rest stop to stretch your legs and buy some souvenirs. Put it on your list if your driving by and you won’t be sorry!

Barbecue restaurant
Big Sur Smokehouse is a classic barbecue spot located in an iconic little red homestead adjacent to Highway 1, dating back to the 1800s. The renovated venue pays homage to pitmasters from various regions, offering a selection of smoked meats such as brisket, chicken, pulled pork, and hot links. Additionally, they have a California twist with dry-rubbed organic cauliflower. The sleekly renovated 1860s building features subway tiles and marble counters for a modern touch.
I've had the best BBQ beef briskets over here. The meat was so tender and juicy. The sides were good too. Also enjoyed the margaritta. Fast, friendly services. Super clean restrooms. Strongly recommend!
Hannah F — Google review
A good place for BBQ, especially as part of the resort atmosphere. BBQ I would say though, if there is a Californian version, tends toward the healthier side and lacks that "eat BBQ, sweat, and fall asleep" aspect. Salad with chicken was flavorful, but the brisket left me wanting a bit more given the larger cuts. I also don't know what I'm talking about so... There's that.
Brian H — Google review
Came on a Weds around noon for lunch. Amicable staff and quick delivery of food. The sausage was decent but felt it was missing grilled onions or some additional condiment. Baked beans were okay as well. Burger served its purpose and filled us up. The beer was the best part of the meal, decent selection. Overall, the area was nice with good amount of parking and easy access in the heart of big sur.
Nate U — Google review
Driving along, and we see everyone sitting outside, looks good, let's stop! It was not. Service was terrible, rude. We asked for the brisket, they reply 'don't got it.’ We ask for a recommendation they said 'ugh I don't know what you want' ?? Ok.... so we get the pulled pork platter w/ some extra sides because I don't eat meat. I JUST saw someone served their sides, and they were heaping but when I was served it wasn't filled at all..I just felt weird w/ the staff. They were so blatantly unwelcoming towards us. Pulled pork was fine, (needs sauce) collard greens pretty good, coke slaw fine, the “baked” macaroni and cheese was awful. We didn’t finish it, it tasted worse than Kraft and is certainly not baked. Tastes like starch water. The interior is very cute, nice outdoor seating (but full of flies) some fans would help a lot. The service, prices and food together bring it down to 2 stars
JP S — Google review
Took a shuttle as a resort guest from the valet stand (They used the luxurious XC90 both to/from the smokehouse). While our entire meal is complimentary as we were staying at the resort, they do offer the menu items for paying guests not staying at the resort. Ordered a barista made mocha with oat milk which was quite delicious and well made. Ordered the organic green salad with brisket, half rack of ribs, collard greens as a side and bread pudding. Salad was good with fresh ingredients although nothing special. The shaved Manchego cheese was tasty though. The brisket however was quite delicious. Fatty portion was very tender although portions weren't that large. Lean portion was not dry or tough. Half rack of ribs were tasty as well especially as a departure from the usual lunch options available on-site for resort guests. Sauces were delicious. Collard green was nice as a side with authentic vinegar heavy undertones while being tender with some ham hock pieces. Bread pudding took some time to reheat and bring out but it was tasty as well. While taste was relatively good, it wasn't necessarily a great value although you don't have many food options in this part of town. This meal for paying customers would have been $70 which seemed a little high for the portions you'd be receiving. As a complimentary meal for resort guests, this is a no brainer and the food is a nice departure from the usual on-site dining options which don't change over the course of the stay.

Solid barbeque! I'm from NC and my wife is from TX so needless to say that we are tough critics, but we were both pleasantly surprised with the meats, especially the link and brisket. The ribs were quite good, but could have been more tender with a more robust bark. The cole slaw and corn/black beans were VERY good, but the potato salad and mac and cheese were just okay. We really wish they had baked beans; it's my favorite side to go with barbeque. If you are in Big Sur you should definitely stop. Not the world's best, but definitely worth the time, money and experience!
Wayne J — Google review
I expected some amazing food because it costs $30 a plate. With 4 people it was a couple cents shy of $129.00. My complaint isn’t about the flavor of the food, it tasted really good. I just wasn’t happy with portion sizes. I had 4 people in my group. For that price, I got 4 slices of brisket and a lot of each slice was solid fat. My son got 3 slices of tri tip, and my wife got 2 sausages. On top of that our food wasn’t hot, just kinda warm. Pretty sure my order would have been different if it wasn’t a “to go” order. If the prices were lower I would go back and try again.
Adam V — Google review
I’m not a bbq connoisseur but the brisket is amazing - tender with the right amount of smoke. The mustard vinaigrette sauce is spot on delicious. The staff is super friendly - Ken in particular went out of his way to brighten our day! Thank you!

The Village in Big Sur is a charming organic cafe and restaurant with a beautifully designed space. The owner goes the extra mile to source fresh, locally grown ingredients from Monterey's farmers markets. Visitors rave about the amazing food, particularly the smoothie bowl and adaptogenic latte. The outdoor dining by the river offers a peaceful atmosphere for enjoying meals. Guests are impressed by dishes like the heirloom tomato salad, which features flavorful elements like plums and almond cheese while still being healthy.
I cant say enough positive things about the incredible food, kind servers, and stunning setting and experience here. I was a huge fan of Big Sur Bakery (before it sadly burned down) and knew of Chef Tim’s incredible culinary talents from his time there. The staff and servers knew too and many migrated there from BSB to join his new adventure. I happened to be there for the opening night while camping with my boys. His food is creative and delicious, beautiful yet unpretentious, and the staff are like family. It’s like you can taste the heart he and his team put into their creations. You gotta reserve, don't miss a chance to eat here. We’re gonna read about this place in the top food mags soon, guaranteed. And whoever created the “snap back’’ (sugar snap peas, lemon, vodka) deserves all the flowers!! Congrats to you all, you’re making magical greatness in a magical place.

Reviewing The Village as a wedding venue - a much anticipated addition to the Big Sur area! As a Big Sur wedding and elopement photographer, I was so excited to hear when this new venue was opening up in 2024. It is the place to go - whether it's getting coffee and pastries in the morning, grabbing brunch on a Sunday, sitting down for a 4-course dinner, or even taking a yoga class. Better yet, The Village also serves as a private event venue, offering both ceremony and reception options with menus curated with care that highlight local farms and seasonal produce. This beautifully designed space is centered around its hearth, a focal point that reflects its heart for community gatherings, but walk around and you'll also be charmed by its rustic wood panel walls, industrial garage doors, and romantic string lights that light the patio at night. If you're looking for a place with good vibes, The Village is definitely one of my favorite wedding venues - you can tell that it was crafted and built with love.
Lynn P — Google review
Like many others, we miss Big Sur Bakery dearly and were saddened to learn both of the fire that burned their facilities but also the expected timeline for their potential return (2-3 years). The Village has stepped up to fill the void and is a gorgeous space that serves as an event and wedding venue, dining destination, but most recently, has opened to offer upscale coffee and pastries in the morning hours. The selection is more limited than Big Sur Bakery but includes a solid choice of coffee drinks and pastries before offering some hot kitchen items like a breakfast sandwich starting at 9:30. The vibes of the building and the indoor and outdoor seating space are top notch with manicured lawns, rustic wood tables and open spaces. The Village only Parking is plentiful and its adjacent to the convenient General Store for supplies and the River Inn for lodging. We ordered a sampling of their $9 lattes (Chai and Matcha) and coffee (espresso tonic) as well as several pastries. The highlight were the candy cap (mushroom) muffins and chocolate chip cookie although I also enjoyed the baguette sandwich. Credit cards are accepted and there’s plentiful seating inside and outdoor. Judging by the crowds, The Village is a welcome fancier (albeit pricier) option for those who miss Big Sur Bakery.

Unfortunately I didn't have the best experience at The Village in Big Sur. It ended up being around $40 for just three items, which felt pricey for what we got. The pastry and drinks weren't terrible, but definitely not worth the cost. And one top of that, one of the staff made a rude comment when we were saying hi to her dog, which really threw off the vibes for me. The location is beautiful, but that's honestly the only real highlight.

An absolute gem—whether you’re in Big Sur or a metropolitan area, Solstice’s dining experience cannot be beat. The team, environment and meal were all magical. Each dish was very thoughtful, highlighting some more humble ingredients that came alive on the plate. We certainly will be back!

My compliments and gratitude to the baker. The coffee cake and berry scone are the best I’ve ever had of each. Really special and I’ve been to more than a hundred bakeries and try everything. The Coffee cake top had an amazing texture and the real berries in the scone were fantastic. I like that the scone center is slightly softer than a typical scone but still much more dense than a muffin. Mad skills! Coffee was good too! Thanks! Staff also friendly… all the positive things…

Just had dinner here tonight and couldn’t be more in love with this little spot. The staff are kind and knowledgeable about the menu and kitchen. While truly a completely new place (2 weeks old), give it a try! Their mezcal cocktail is delicious, the duck absolutely great, and rice bowl appetizer a must. We even mentioned wanting to try out their morning yoga program and they immediately brought over someone to book it for us and set us all up for it!
Jade L — Google review
I didn’t have the best experience at The Village in Big Sur. The place is definitely overpriced for what you get, and the drinks weren’t worth what they charge. One of the staff even came out and made a rude comment, which really threw off the whole experience. For the price and reputation, I expected much better. The location is beautiful, but that’s about the only highlight.

Soberanes Point Trail to Whale Peak is a must-see destination in Garrapata State Park, offering amazing coastal views and a relatively easy hike. The trail takes you through beautiful trees and up to Whale Peak, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the area. The park features easy parking with wide off-road areas and well-maintained paths that provide great views. Visitors can also explore micro-ecosystems and wildflowers while taking in the fantastic ocean cliffs.
Great spot in Garrapata State Park to get a higher vantage point of the coast. Beautiful views in all directions! Parking is limited, there are a few spots off the road right at the base of the steps up to the point, otherwise, you'll have to park further down the road and take a longer trail to reach the steps. I'm a wedding photographer and I've taken photos at this spot at sunrise and sunset and both are amazing! Usually not a ton of people around but would definitely recommend weekdays if you want a better chance of a quieter experience.

Gorgeous mini hike! You can climb to the top of the hill to get beautiful views of the surrounding area and also hike to the bottom to check out the tide pools. It’s an easy stair/dirt hike. There are two entrances next to the turn outs at the bottom of the hill. It’s free to enter. Parking is just pulling up on the turn outs at the base of the hill

If you start your day early, on a weekend, you shouldn't have a problem finding parking. What would be even better is visiting during the week. The loop is short, but several stairs to be aware of. Although at the beginning of the week the forecast was predicting rain, it was clear, sunny skies and warm. It was a beautiful day with awesome visibility. This is just 1 vista point along Highway 1, so it's not my favorite, but it's worth the steps. Take advantage of as many as you can. Not all of them require a lot of walking, but it's nice to stretch legs after the drive.

Pfeiffer Falls is a 60-foot waterfall located in the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, nestled among lush ferns and towering redwoods. The trail to the falls is approximately 2.5 miles round trip and involves climbing up wooden stairs through a dense canopy of trees. The viewing area at the falls provides a perfect spot for some peaceful solitude, with the soothing sound of cascading water. This hidden gem is best visited during Winter and Spring when rainfall enhances its beauty.
Pfeiffer Falls Trail – Big Sur Hidden Gem The Pfeiffer Falls Trail kicks off right at the Big Sur Lodge, making it super convenient if you’re already staying nearby. It’s a charming little hike that’s great for a casual adventure, but still gives you a bit of a workout with some moderate elevation gain. What really makes this trail shine is the lush greenery all around—towering redwoods, wildflowers in bloom, and the peaceful sounds of birds chirping overhead. You’ll also pass by serene water streams, which add a calming vibe to the whole experience. • Entrance fee: $10 (day use) • Amenities: There’s a water filling station and clean restrooms right at the trailhead, which is a big plus. • Bonus: The little café at the lodge is perfect for grabbing a coffee, cold drink, or a quick snack either before or after your hike. Overall, it’s a solid short-to-medium hike with beautiful scenery and just enough challenge to feel rewarding—ideal for a relaxed morning or afternoon outing in Big Sur.

Parking lots available for a fee or street parking is free as long as you stay within allowed areas. If you pay at 1 state park, it will cover the fee at another as long as it's the same day. Restrooms are available near parking areas, but not along the trail. The trail itself is short but slightly inclined. Several areas have stairs and something to be mindful of. If it's steep going up, it will be steep going down. Once you get to the falls, there are 2 long benches. Sit, relax, and enjoy the sounds. Hopefully, it's all water you hear and not loud guests lol I laid on one of the benches and closed my eyes. I could have fallen asleep there. So peaceful! It's a beautiful area. I hope that once the other trail is opened after bridge damage repair, it will be worth exploring again.

Pfeiffer Falls in Big Sur, California, is a stunning natural attraction that offers visitors a beautiful hike through the redwoods and a breathtaking view of a cascading waterfall. The trailhead is located near the Big Sur Lodge and winds through towering redwood trees and ferns, creating a magical and peaceful atmosphere that's perfect for a nature walk. The hike to the falls is relatively easy and well-marked, making it accessible to visitors of all ages and abilities. The trail is approximately 1.5 miles round trip, and along the way, there are several places to rest, enjoy a picnic, and take in the beautiful surroundings. The waterfall itself is a spectacular sight, with water cascading over the rocks and creating a soothing, meditative soundtrack. The view of the falls is particularly impressive after a rainstorm when the water is flowing more abundantly. One of the best things about Pfeiffer Falls is that it's not too crowded, so visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the falls without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Additionally, the trail is dog-friendly, so visitors can bring their furry friends along for the adventure. Pfeiffer Falls is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Big Sur. The hike is easy, and the falls are a stunning display of nature's power and beauty. If you're looking for a peaceful and serene getaway, be sure to add Pfeiffer Falls to your itinerary – it's well worth the visit!

Want to smell the redwoods and immerse in nature, this is one of the places you could go either for hikes or picnics or camping in Big Sur. Pfieiffer falls trail is closed, however, canyone view trail is open. It is on the more than moderate level as most of it is uphill with great trail. Though we were told 1 mile each way, it is longer than a mile each way. Carry water, cap is recommended as you climb up it can get warmer. Good hiking gear is not essential but helpful. Trail starts at the Big Sur Lodge, walk by the stream for some distance and start the climb.

Beautiful hike and a great place for a short family camp near water. The hike was not very strenuous, but good shoes recommended. The park charges just $10 for the car for the entire day. However, you don’t even hv to enter the park to get to the trailhead.

The trail path to the waterfall was washed out and blocked off as of this past weekend. This wasn't communicated when we got a daily pass for the park, even though we noted the waterfall was what we came to see. Still had a great hike, beautiful location, even in the rain.

Wild, untamed, and breathtakingly peaceful. Little Sur River Beach is one of the most beautiful hidden stretches along the Big Sur coast — where the river meets the sea in a stunning display of natural harmony. Towering cliffs frame the soft sand, and the ever-changing light gives the entire scene a painterly glow. It’s less visited than nearby beaches, which makes it feel like your own private paradise. Though swimming isn’t recommended due to strong currents, it’s the perfect place to walk, reflect, and listen to the roar of the Pacific in its rawest form. A true Big Sur treasure.

What a beautiful sight from the highway viewing point ! I did not see a way to go down to the beach. There was nobody around so didn't risk it. This beach is best to be enjoyed from the top othereise you wouldn't be able to capture the river on camera. It's a unique formation worth a 2-3 mins stop. The stop is around a blind turn so be careful. This beach seemed to be comparitively calm without any huge waves hitting the shores.
