La Lopa is a standout restaurant in Matera, offering traditional dishes like Fave e Cicoria, Crapiata, peperoni cruschi, and various pasta options. What sets it apart is the cozy cave cinema where diners can watch films set in Matera for free. The warm atmosphere and locally sourced ingredients add to the experience. Despite initial hesitation about prices, visitors were glad they gave it a try and found it to be one of their favorite spots in Matera.
We had dinner as a party of four and enjoyed a great meal with very welcoming and attentive service. There was a cinema in the basement that showed clips of different movies that were filmed in Matera over the years. Some going back to the 70’s

Finally got to try the famous Matera bread here and we loved it! We had the Lucanian pork cheek and the orecchiette with ragu - both were delicious, but the pork cheek especially blew our minds. It was incredibly tender and packed with flavor. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a great local food experience in Matera!
Joanna C — Google review
Very friendly staff. We loved the table setting. Dishes are very good accompanied by a red wine. The vegetarian pasta s, chicken and lamb were all very good. To be recommended the tiramisu. Lovely restaurant
Mr T — Google review
We came here for lunch, as they were fully booked for all dinners over the weekend. We ordered the set menu + wine pairing, and absolutely enjoyed our time there. I wish we got our waiter’s name because he was so friendly and spent time explaining to us about all the wines we were tasting. Our waiter’s warmth definitely made the experience better for us. The meals were delicious too. Would definitely come again if we visit Matera again.
SY P — Google review
It‘s all good until it‘s fraud! Read down below before you visit La Lopa in Matera! First of all, the restaurant is a nice place and the food is good. Don‘t expect overly large portions but the taste was nice and I would recommend eating an Antipasto, a Primi or Secondi with a side dish and a dessert. What about the fraud: We ordered two glasses of red wine and a bottle of water along with the dinner. The wine didn‘t arrive and we thought about it because we had to drive home 2 hours after dinner. We let the waiter know that they forgot the wine and that we would cancel it because we would stay with water only. No problem, he responded. When we asked for the bill it was 89€ including two glasses of red wine for I think 7€ in total, which we didn’t receive and canceled later at the waiter. It was a bill with all the positions we ordered in detail. I asked the waitress to correct the bill expecting to pay 82€ and give her a tip instead. What happened was that one of the two women in charge, a blonde, came to us with the card reader covering the bill inside of her hand. The card reader said 89€ and she asked for the credit card. I gave it to her because I didn‘t care about the 7€, more about the fact that she was willing to betray her customers. After the payment was made she quickly got rid of the bill crumpling it up with her hand. I immediately asked for the bill, so instead of giving me the detailed bill she had crumpled up, she walked away and came back with a bill which only stated the total amount of 89€ but without the positions we ordered in detail. This would otherwise have revealed that she didn’t correct the bill as we asked her to. So I‘m asking you directly: What did you earn by fooling and betraying your customers without even thinking anyone would notice your criminal behaviour? I wasn‘t willing to argue at this moment but I already thought it would be better to warn other customers here. You, as a leading employee of this restaurant should be ashamed of yourself! Time and date of visit (time of payment): 23.09.2025 / ~ 20:25

The atmosphere of this place is incredible. Beautiful place even in small details. Staff is friendly and nice, we had pleasant time there. Unfortunately, food wasn’t exactly the best.

Nice place. Have a cave cinema showing the movie clips that were taken in Matera. Food is part good as well as the service. The service is pretty fast.

We had a lovely lunch at La Lopa. The atmosphere was very nice and authentic, as we ate into the cave. We took the egg and the veal carpaccio, which were excellent and we also really liked the degustation of “Selezione di formaggi a caglio vegetale”.

Vitantonio Lombardo Ristorante is a unique dining experience in Matera, Italy. Housed in a converted cave in the Sassi district, it offers an elegant setting for gourmet dining. After your meal, take a leisurely stroll through the historic center and enjoy the haunting beauty of Matera at night. The chef's cuisine reflects a strong connection to the region, featuring creative dishes that showcase local recipes and ingredients from Lucania.
Absolutely loved our dining experience at Vitantonio Lombardo Ristorante in Matera! Every dish here comes with a creative and playful name that immediately sparks curiosity — and the flavors definitely live up to it. The waitress was incredibly helpful and friendly, taking the time to explain the menu and share her personal recommendations, which we really appreciated. We went for the Heart tasting menus — 2 of us had the 5-course (€140) and 2 had the 7-course (€170), and every course was a delightful surprise. Some highlights for us: "I Dropped the Egg in the Garden" — so beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The Black Pizza — never had anything like it! Chewy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside — a must-try. Sweet Liquid Ricotta Ravioli with Sea Urchins, Cinnamon, and Yellow Tomatoes — a bold flavor combination. The ravioli was huge, and although slightly sweet for my personal taste, the pesto sauce balanced it out really well. Spaghettone Pasta in Citrus Carbonara with Crusko Bread Peppers and Shrimp — hands down one of the best pastas I've ever had! Perfectly cooked with such a unique citrusy twist. And of course, dessert — "Like a Cigar" — super fun and creative! It looked exactly like a real cigar (complete with that smoky aroma), but you could actually bite into it! Such a memorable way to end the meal. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Matera. We came in late March (off-season) and didn’t need a reservation, which was a plus. Overall, a lovely dining experience — creative, playful, and full of surprises. Highly recommend!
Anita L — Google review
One of the greatest meals of my life! However, I should warn you that it doesn't come cheap—our dinner for two cost over $400. Nevertheless, the entire experience is truly memorable. Each dish is presented in the most creative ways imaginable, featuring designs like castles and skulls. The five-course meal is substantial, so don’t worry about opting for the smallest choice. The food is exceptionally well-seasoned, fresh, and prepared in ways I’ve never encountered before. You'll even find yourself trying lamb liver that looks nothing like you’d expect. Or black and white dishes! The staff is fantastic, making us feel right at home, and the atmosphere is incredible—you dine inside a cave!
Luana P — Google review
Very good dining experience, worthy of one Michelin star. The setting was wonderful, in a traditional Matera style cave. Dishes were beautifully presented, full of flavour and creative. Service was nearly faultless, unfortunately with only 3 staff on the floor the pressure and stress was evident in the staff.
Sergio ( — Google review
Unfortunately, about half of the dishes didn’t taste good. The place and service were up to standard. If you’re particular about food taste, I wouldn’t recommend it. However, if you’re more focused on the overall dining experience, it’s not a bad option — all the dishes were beautifully presented. Good for pictures. Camera eat first ! 😉 About the taste: This restaurant seems to like adding grainy elements to their dishes, such as charcoal powder, crispy minced garlic, and some black breadcrumb-like ingredient. Overall, you often get a mouthful of hard, gritty bits — which feels quite unpleasant. But since you’re in Matera — famously known as the “City of Stone” — maybe it’s all part of the experience. Perhaps they just wanted you to taste the stones too. Also, for some reason, one or two of the dishes were overly greasy, making them taste very heavy and cloying.
Carter L — Google review
Avoid this restaurant. The reason for the one star is because everything was perfect (delicious food, excellent service, elegant ambiance) until towards the end of our dinner we hear loud violent screaming coming from the kitchen. I had unobstructed view of the kitchen and through the glass I see the chef screaming and insulting the kitchen staff. The violence is unacceptable and the lack of restraint unprofessional.
Adriana C — Google review
This is the first Michelin restaurant that encouraged eating with fingers and mouth to plate and I gotta say it added to the experience. Professional, unrushed service, and different tastes that do not disappoint. We did think the pizza was overrated and really needed true caviar to add any flavor, but other than that excellent overall
Steve E — Google review
Outstanding. Our dinner here was the cherry on the Materna trip cake. Not for nothing is this a Michelin star restaurant. Very nicely located in the Sassi district in one of the caves. We had the 8 course full menu which was exceptionally good. Nicely curated dishes of huge variation, always referring to the South Italian heritage and Materna. The staff is super kind and creates a welcoming atmosphere. Huge wine menu and good recommendations. A very memorable experience from the starters to the dessert (try the Monte Crusko!)
Christoph R — Google review
What a treasure in Matera. Beautiful delicious food, pretty setting, friendly and attentive service. Great value, too. Loved the wine pairings and the concept of being able to assemble your own tasting menu. Chef is in the kitchen himself. The Michelin star is well deserved.

Really nice location with good food. It was unfortunate that their kitchen closes at 1530. However, you can still order snacks. The waitress was very nice and helpful, although because it was busy, the service was a little slow. Would recommend for drinks and a lovely view of Matera!

Very nice pizzeria tucked away in a little alley. It feels exactly like how you imagine Italy. But keep in mind – you should reserve a table by phone or be ready to wait if you want to sit outside in the alley. Great selection of pizzas and friendly service. The pizza was delicious, and the wine was great too. Excellent experience!

La Latteria is a family-owned shop in Basilicata that has been operating since 1945. Emanuele, the current owner, has transformed the traditional grocery store into a charming bistro where visitors can sample local delicacies and wines. The shop offers a selection of cured meats, cheeses, and local wines from Basilicata.
We had a stressful time getting to Matera. After a long wander we needed food, a rest room and a drink some where nice. Chance was on our side. We fell in to Lalatteria. Beautifully decorated, perfectly formed. Friendly staff excellent food, spotless toilets. Best local fruit beer of the holiday. Best rose wine of the holiday. Thank you Lalatteria xx
Alison — Google review
Stumbled upon La Latteria while searching for a restaurant that doesn't serve the usual traditional stuff, and indeed we were lucky. We had a baccalà on caramelized onions, a beef tartar with stracciatella (which is pulled mozzarella in cream) with pistachio crumbles and an excellent grilled tuna. The wine offerings is a bit limited, but the food is excellent.

We'd thought Italy is THE country for hearty and welcoming service - it is not! Food was very good. We tried some local speciality dishes, but the service was just not hearty and the management of our compllain for the sausages brought cold also not really professionell...as we would expect it in a good restaurant.

Had a very nice & tasty lunch here. Went in here accidentally thinking it was just a store and decided to stay and eat too. Cozy and intimate atmosphere. The staff wasn't very friendly or helpful, but it was alright in the end. The straciatella was my favourite thing. ☺️

La Nicchia nel Sasso Osteria Contemporanea is a charming restaurant with a stunning view of the Sassi di Matera and the Matera cathedral. It's known for being an ideal spot for a romantic evening, offering well-presented regional cuisine. Visitors have praised the top-notch service and delicious dishes, particularly highlighting the fresh truffle pasta and pork belly. Chef Vito's culinary skills are highly commended, while waiter Nico has been described as welcoming and helpful.
A nice little restaurant with a great view. We have just stumbled upon this gem with my wife while walking around the town. The service is great, the food is amazing, and the setting is spectacular. We have got to sit outside looking at the old town. While waiting for the food we enjoyed a cheeky glass of Aperol Spritz and enjoyed the view. The pasta is next-level and the tiramisu and chocolate soufflet after are not to be skipped.

Can't say enough good things about our dining experience. Vito is a hugely talented chef, and every dish we had was cooked to perfection. The effort that's been put into creating a unique menu that showcases local flavours is clear. As well, our servers were friendly, attentive and gave us great recommendations for wine from the region. Thanks again to all the team!

If you go to Matera and consider yourself a foodie do.not.miss.going here! The food was amazing, the staff gracious (we were early for our reservation and then afterwards had to wait there for our tour guide to arrive) and view from the patio spectacular. My mom and I had an incredible experience here. Came here for dinner and we both agreed this was one of our faviourite meals in all of Italy. We started with the plate of Matera cheeses, then had the scallops and the snapper fish (on recommendation from our server). Everything was fantastic. The service was top notch, the food was amazing, the chef even came out to ask how everything was. Don't skip dessert either, it was just as well thought out as our meals! Highly recommend!

The establishment also features a variety of Lucanian and local wines, cocktails (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), spirits, herbal teas, extracts, and other beverages.
Great place to visit and explore. Lovely cocktails and an amazing decor! Favourite bar of Daniel Craig, James Bond. Just be careful you are aware of the prices - it’s very easy to spend money on their groovy cocktails. Special mention to Nancy Lightning who served us. How cool is she??? Great English, very cool and friendly.

We first ordered 2 Gin & Tonic €10 each. Then we ordered 2 Gin without Tonic @€9 each. This is just ridiculous. Snacks were given to 4 tables around us but we were ignored. Avoid if you are a tourist. Much better options in Matera than this rip-off!

Nestled in the enchanting city of Matera, Agriristories is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic culinary experience. This charming restaurant is set within a cozy underground cellar that exudes warmth and character, making it perfect for enjoying an aperitif or a delightful meal. The menu proudly features local artisanal products, ensuring that every dish showcases the rich flavors of the region. From delectable cheeses and olives to exquisite wines, each ingredient tells a story rooted in Lucanian tradition.
Great place, great food and great service. All food made from local products which you can buy at the place. All stuff is very helpful and give you specific information about all dishes and products (even name of the farmer). All dishes are pure local and the prices are very reasonable. I suggest set menu made from 11 dishes for 9 €. The best place I eat in this part of Italy.

Cozy small restaurant. There is a dish which includes different tyipcial local food. You get some cheese, different bread, pasta, soup etc. It is the best choice to get an impression of this area

Very nice restaurant. Polite staff, testy food... They explaining everything like in Michelin Star restaurant. Highly recommend it!
Hristo S — Google review
We had an exceptional launch while visiting Matera at Agriristories. The place looks very nice and cozy, some of the tables have a romantic vibe being arranged directly in the rock. Fool was delicious and the staff was very friendly and informative. They gave a lot of details on the dishes as well as ingredients used, all being from the area. Last I forget, the wine selection was another pleasant surprise with a wonderful Primitivo that I really appreciated.

Beautiful location - very personal service with amazing explanations about the food and where it comes from - highly recommend visiting

Amazing place! The staff was super friendly and helpful, explaining about the different dishes. We got the tasting menu which was delicious. Everything was made with ingredients from local farms which could also be purchased in their shop at the entrance. The white wines we tried were also amazing. Totally reccomend this place!
Iva K — Google review
Wonderful place to eat typical local dishes. Staff takes time to explain everything that is in your plate. Every dish is sooo tasty. You can even buy the things you had in your dish and the staff will provide you directions to prepare it again at home. Nice experience to eat in this cool place dug into the rock. Very affordable, definitely worth the visit !
Laura B — Google review
I am glad that we found this place because it is a nice escape from the big road and provides a shelter for the hot sun. But the best thing are the local products. Try the tasting menu, that is very reasonably priced and heat the stories of local farmers. The owner makes his own citruscello from oranges, limes and lemons. Pure gold.

Such an amazing find. We asked the owner for a platter of the marinated vegetables that he would recommend and he served us a magnificent platter. We also had delicious wine here. Highly recommend for the amazing service (despite us speaking no Italian) and delicious food

Thank goodness for this place! The amazing paninos uses stone baked bread with a crunchy crusty when lightly toasted. The mixture of deli items can be ordered on a plate for an antipasto or appetisers that we ate out the front of the deli with our beers.

Yes, yes, yes. Popped in for a bite to eat. Very understated, but wow! Asked Pino the butcher for something special. He sliced me some Mortedella and added some cheese. Waited around 10mins and he delivered me a very toasty hot, matera bread rolled, filled with Italian goodness. I was in heaven. Going back tonight for more and a recommendation from Pino himself. Can't wait.

Fantastic place to eat local food. Please don’t ask for pizza or spaghetti. Eat what they have, cause it’s excellent local cuisine.

THE PLACE TO GO IN MATERA. For the first time I tried melanzana riappiena and I can't be more disappointed that I cannot have it every single day. Amazing quality for a really good price.

This was half empty and the sellers began to close their stalls ahead of closing time.

Seller filled up 100g of peppers and charged me 10 euros. Of course I declined the 100 euro per kilo cost. Con men. Don't go here if you are a tourist.

Quite empty and thus disappointing , only few veggies shops and not even so good looking

(Translated by Google) We were already nearing the end of our epic trip to Matera... We had seen everything we set out to do, and not only that... I mean, we had just ticked off a Michelin-starred restaurant, very close to the cathedral... We were looking for a bit of peace, but we came across the square in Matera...a historic square... And over a large swordfish, which was offered for sale...
