Mallard Cottage is a charming and rustic restaurant located in the quaint fishing hamlet of Quidi Vidi, St. Johns. Housed in one of the oldest wooden buildings in the area, this former residence for local fisherfolk and antiques shop has been transformed into an outstanding dining spot. The ever-changing menu features locally sourced seasonal dishes like molasses-glazed pork belly, chicken crepes, and halibut cheeks. The relaxed atmosphere is occasionally accompanied by live local music.
Absolutely stunning experience, start to finish. Brilliant atmosphere and location, but pales in comparison to the service and food, which were both out of this world. Our server was relatively new to the team, though you’d never know it! She was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly- made us feel like family all the way through. The food was delightful, and we even got to see a picture from earlier that day of the tuna that ended up as the catch of the day on my dad’s plate! Super accommodating of my sister’s vegan diet, despite being at the tail end of service for the day. All in all, would highly recommend and cannot WAIT to go back

Mallard Cottage is such a quaint and charming spot with a rotating daily menu that focuses on quality over quantity. I went with the pork chops while my wife had the fish (tilapia, I believe) — both were absolutely delicious! Some people might be thrown off by the smaller menu (like the table next to us), but don’t let that discourage you — there’s always a burger option if nothing else appeals that day. They’ve also got some great local beer options, thanks to being right near Quidi Vidi Brewery, and the service here was warm and friendly. If you’re looking for a cozy dining experience with fresh, rotating dishes, Mallard Cottage is well worth a stop!

Disappointing Evening We were really looking forward to the meal, but were disappointed. The restaurant is very lovingly and invitingly decorated. The open kitchen and the bar area fit well into the concept. When we visited, the restaurant was practically empty and the restaurant staff talked more to each other than to the guests. There was also no catch of the day and no mussels available. The presentation of the dishes was minimalist and we had to add more salt to all of the dishes because salt apparently isn't used in the kitchen. The batter on the cod tongues was soft and there was no truffle to taste or see in the truffle gnocchi. We ordered three short ribs. All three portions were different sizes. When I asked, I was told that that's just the way it is.

We had a great time and enjoyed our meal. Definitely not a place you should go and rush through. We had the Brussel sprout salad and it was amazing! My cod was very fresh and the drinks were delicious. Service was great! By the end of the night we had two servers and the chef at our table talking and giving us recommendations where to go on our trip. I think it is worth a stop while visiting St. John’s.
Krista S — Google review
We had a TRULY incredible experience at Mallard Cottage! I am vegan, and the chef was so accommodating - he made me an incredible appetizer with a parsnip puree that I will surely dream of. The waitress so was kind, the service was wonderful, and the ginger mocktail was delicious! My friend who is not vegan said the fish of the day dish was the best thing she has ever eaten. We will definitely be back.
Chantelle P — Google review
One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in St. John’s! The service was warm and friendly, willing to give recommendations and attentive. The food was excellent and their drinks were strong and delicious. The restaurant atmosphere was beautiful, cozy and welcoming. Definitely will come back soon!
John F — Google review
This is constantly rated as one of the best restaurants in Newfoundland so I had to come try it out. Situated in a historic building inhabited by the Mallard family for over a century, the decor is very rustic and cozy. The service was very professional. We came in mid-May (during tourist off-season) and the place was packed, so I would recommend making reservations in advance. The dishes change daily based on what's in stock; I personally really liked their bread and their refreshing lobster salad. They also have a special menu that's prone to selling out quickly so I would recommend ordering from that menu first, before you order from the main menu. The flavours were decent and the price (and portions) feel in-between fine and casual dining.
Andy Z — Google review
So great! SARA, our server tended to our every need. Make a reservation in advance.. Busy time is 6:30 to 7 Great locally sourced fare, fresh fish ( COD THE DAY WE WERE THERE) oysters, with my team enjoying a warm beet salad and the chicken...with shared accompaniments of potatoes and Brussel sprouts Yum yum! Atmosphere, service, food... you need to go here!

Bar
The Merchant Tavern is a popular restaurant located in downtown St. Johns, offering a relaxed atmosphere and delicious local cuisine. The industrial space is adorned with wood and iron, creating a modern-meets-rustic style decor with vaulted ceilings and original artwork. The menu features seasonal meals made from locally sourced ingredients such as halibut caught off the coast of Newfoundland and wild mushrooms from nearby hiking trails.
Tonight was not my first visit to Merchant Tavern, and I have always enjoyed the food and service. This evening was another dining pleasure. We started with the bread and butter (a sundried tomato version), which was simply delicious. Next, the generously sized salad of arugula with sweetened whole cranberries, orange slivers, and pepitas in a light and creamy dressing. On to the NL cod entree. I can't say enough about the thin and seasoned crispy top crust covering a perfectly cooked cod filet - moist yet held together. It melted in the mouth. Served with a caper sauce, roasted mini potatoes, and crisp asparagus. Next, bigoli (thick pasta noodles) in a leek cream sauce with roasted mushrooms and parmesan. We finished with an exquisite and aptly named Celebration of Parsnip - a parsnip and brown butter cake topped with parsnip ice cream and crispy parsnip curls. The ice cream was more like butter. The flavours were subtle, and the varying textures created a unique dessert experience that elevated the lowly parsnip to rock-star status. If my cod photo appears to show a small serving, it's because it's just my portion of the shared plate. Interior - The seating areas are dim and romantic on the right side of the restaurant with standard-height tables. On the left side are the hightop tables and bright, tall windows. The centre square is a large bar with seating on three sides. Lots of options to suit your mood. Make sure you make a reservation. This is a busy, vibey spot showcasing both casual and business attire. Final note: Although we ordered from the menu, there was a chef's tasting menu.

Absolutely loved my dinner at The Merchant Tavern. The wonderful service, to the amazing food down to me ordering the the seared scallops on the night specials twice. The experience was exceptional. Thank you to the chef. Would definitely recommend :)

Spectacular! Excellent choice when booking reservations in NL. The food was unbelievable, service was prompt and friendly & I honestly wish I ate there more than once on my trip. It was soooo delicious!!!
Taylor S — Google review
The location and building are impressive. We did not make a reservation but they accommodated us at the bar for full service. The staff is very attentive and friendly. The food was exceptional. The swordfish sashimi was so delicate and balanced flavours expertly. The tuna carpaccio was also very good, although they can cut back a bit on the banana peppers so the tuna can shine through. Our mains were the NL Cod and the Shrimp Conchiglie. Both extraordinary! Highly recommend for a night out.
Lea B — Google review
We are from Ottawa and came here for dinner tonight based on a recommendation, and immediately the place is stunning, the vibe is great. The staff is warm and energetic and all seem to be actively enjoying their nights. The food was also excellent. The only issue we faced was that our server, Chloe, seemed to be struggling. We waited a long time for her to come to the table. Things didn't get cleared, drinks didn't get refilled. She walked by and would say she'd be right back and not return. She also seemed to struggle with menu knowledge and described a few things incorrectly, but thankfully we aren't picky eaters. I'm not sure if it was just a tough night for her, or if she needs more training but the restaurant is blessed that the rest of the service staff stepped up and ensured we were taken care of. One of the bartenders came and cleared our dishes and took our dessert orders, other servers came with our bill and checked in offering us water and such. Honestly the rest of the night here was excellent, loved seeing the staff having fun dancing around, laughing and working hard. Just maybe an off night for Chloe, thankfully she has some great support that saved the experience for us.
Mell M — Google review
Experienced my first ever tasting menu Started the night with some sparkling and white 🍷 First course was an assortment of tuna crudo, scallop cheviche, NL snowcrabs and merasheen bay oysters. The crudo was a burst of umami. The sour and refreshing flavour of the cheviche wakes up your mouth perfectly before all other courses. Second course was a pan fried Newfoundland cod with a lemon-butter sauce. The brininess from the capers was wonderfully unique to my south asian palette. Most favorite dish of the night. Third course was a lobster spaghettini with lobster bisk. Al dente pasta, creamy bisk, sweet lobster. What more you can ask for! Fourth and the main course was a rendered duck breast with parsnip purée and butter roasted parsnip and mushrooms. Finished with a smoky jus. Fifth and the final course was a coffee cake topped with orange mascarpone on a base of caramel sauce. Perfectly sweet, balanced with the mascarpone whip. The Sauternes at the end felt like a course by itself

Chinched is a relaxed neighborhood bistro that offers an ever-changing menu of small plates featuring local ingredients and bold flavors. The restaurant, run by Chef Shaun Hussey, is known for its eclectic dishes such as charbroiled squid with Amatriciana, pok pok turkey wings, and pork rillette with crostini. In addition to their renowned charcuterie boards, Chinched also operates a deli serving up sandwiches like Mortadella and patty melts for lunch.
Excellent experience here. Our server went above and beyond to look after us and we had a great yarn in the process - really made a difference. Had the large charcuterie board which was excellent as always with great variety. Also tried one of the cocktails which was done very well. Atmosphere was quieter but great for a good yarn with your company. Will be back again to try some mains !
Adam H — Google review
On a solitary trip to NFLD, it was only appropriate that I treat myself. Chinched was an amazing experience. From the Absinthe based cocktail, the Corpse Reviver, to the Atlantic Oysters. The charred carrots were good, and presented beautifully, but I found them in need of a bit of acid. The gentleman behind the bar microplaned a lemon in under a minute and had it ready for me instantly. The service while sitting at the bar was top notch Being that I was dining alone, light hearted conversation was welcome, and he was very forty coming with what was on the menu, where it came from, and what to expect. Great experience. Food was great. Service was stellar.
Mark F — Google review
Reserved a spot at the bar as I was traveling solo. Danny and everyone else at Chinched made me feel welcome from the second I walked in! I had a custom mocktail, which started the experience off right. I’m pescatarian so I ignored the recommended charcuterie and pigs ears, but hear they are delicious. I settled on Lobster, poached and served cold with leche de Tigre sauce. Amazing! By far best lobster dish I’ve ever tasted. Also had the beets and pears, which was superbly prepared. I didn’t leave room for dessert, but had some anyway. Glad I did. Although the food was amazing, the overall experience of dining here was even better. Danny made me feel so welcome. He suggested other great restaurants and experiences in St John’s. Sadly it was my last evening there, so I’ll have to go back! I would highly recommend this place!
Gertie Z — Google review
We walked past this restaurant so many times on our way downtown but never stopped in until it was recommended to us as one of the better restaurants in St. John’s. We are very glad we came! The ambiance upstairs is nice enough, but we eventually moved downstairs and ate at the bar which we enjoyed much better. The staff was very friendly, and the food and cocktails we had were fantastic. We started with a charcuterie board, which is one of their specialties (they also seemed to have a storefront that sold meats). We then had some curried fish cakes which were excellent and spent the rest of the evening sipping cocktails and nibbling on fried pig ears in buffalo sauce (don’t let the name scare you, these are FANTASTIC). Highly recommended and should be a priority for any trip to St. John’s
P M — Google review
We got a reservation here on a whim and were pleasantly surprised with the food and cozy atmosphere. The charcuterie board is a must get and they even have a small storefront inside which sells the meats and cheeses individually. I did find the cod too be on the saltier side, though.
Andy Z — Google review
Had a nice dinner experience at chinched! The staff was very friendly and welcoming and seem to enjoy what they do. The food was so so for me, got try the local oyster, the merasheen bay oysters with house hot sauce which were food, the cod dumplings were ok and the tuna putanesca ok, excellent risotto but unfortunately the tuna was quite salty.
Emma — Google review
Ouuuu baby was this restaurant good! We got the Lamb chop, cavatelli with mussels and cod dumplings, all of which were fantastic. The dumplings might have been the best $18 I’ve ever spent. The cheesecake for dinner was solid. Ambiance was great and the service was top notch. I’ll be back if I’m ever in the city.
Mike H — Google review
Great food, friendly staff, nice ambiance. We had candied walnuts, the boards (combo), grilled charcuterie platter, herb roasted beets, and cheesecake as the final touch. All were excellent. The charcuterie for both the boards and the grilled platter were outstanding. The selections of cheese fit my taste buds very well. Just love the place. There were parking spots but unlikely to handle all the guests. Fortunately we went on a Saturday and street parking spots were not too hard to find. The front entrance has several steps. Wheelchair customers'd better check if there is another entrance.

Terre Restaurant, located inside the ALT Hotel St. Johns, is a new dining establishment with an impressive culinary team. Chef Matthew Swift, formerly of Joe Beef and other renowned restaurants, leads the kitchen while Stelios Doussis, previously at establishments like The Merchant Tavern and Fogo Island Inn, serves as general manager. Terre has gained recognition for its delectable dishes and was even featured in enRoute Magazine's Canada's Best New Restaurants list this year.
We so enjoyed our visit with Terre. The staff were friendly, knew the menu well and bartender made a fine lemon drop martini. The food was creative and delicious. The razor clams were a treat! Smoked arctic char a must. The broccolini with shredded beef very tasty and strip bass all worth choosing. We shared it all so it was not too much food.

We came for dinner with a friend. The food was incredible, the drinks fantastic, and the service outstanding! Thank you Chase and head chef for the surprise dishes. Both the Tuna and Mussels were exceptional! And the cocktails….crafted to perfection. Thank you Delaney!

Wow, just wow! Terre completely exceeded my expectations — both the food and service were phenomenal. We went with the “let us cook for you” option, and every single dish was a masterpiece. This restaurant truly deserves a standing ovation.
Thu V — Google review
This isn't the starter series. This is advanced dining. We ate the chef's menu which came with perhaps 6 starters/salads, 2 mains, and a dessert. I couldn't tell you what it all included because each dish was complex with various vegetables, herbs, spices and many included a protein. Delicious. The foods are fresh, seasonal and crafted with care. The service was patient, helpful and pleasant. I'd highly recommend.
Paul M — Google review
Terre is an absolute must if you want an upscale dining experience. From the second you walk in, its interior decor is professional designed with fantastic attention to detail; the bar is beautiful. The service was excellent from the host’s greeting through till the end of the meal. The food was plated elegantly, and delicious. We savoured the snow crab, and the PEI oysters. My husband has been here many times, and says every dish is delightful. We also ordered cocktails which were also delicious. One was the mixologist’s take on a negroni, the other was a type of spicy margarita — both were savoured. Reserve in advance, because they are understandably in very high demand.

Jakob our server was warm, knowledgeable and efficient. His recommendations for wine, dessert and entree menu options were spot on. The ambiance of restaurant offers lovely view of harbours, contemporary and wonderful option for hotel guests.

I was visiting St. John’s Newfoundland and had a list of restaurants picked out to dine at and let me tell you this was the best of them all. This charming spot also operates as a bar in late hours with live music and has a courtyard where patrons can enjoy their meals while watching the pedestrian mall.
Fantastic food and staff, wonderful patio. The blackened salmon was the best meal I've had on the island. They brought a bowl of water out for my pup on the patio. The lemon cheesecake was the perfect finish to the evening.

We were recommended this place by locals a few times so we decided to try it out and are very glad we did! Staff is very friendly and also gave good food recommendations. We both got the Candied Apple cocktail and it was the best cocktail of our trip. For an appetizer we got the Brie; it was pricey but so delicious and looked pretty. Woulda like just a couple more crostinis but either way, we still enjoyed it very much. For our mains I ordered the Cajun Chicken Fettuccini and my fiancée got the Blackened Salmon and we both absolutely loved our meals, everything was cooked and presented to perfection. Highly recommend stopping by!

I am visiting St. John's, NL for business. I asked the Delta Concierge for restaurant recommendations and he suggested The Gypsy Tea Room. The Blackened Salmon was excellent, I would have licked my plate if I was home. I didn't have any dessert, but the options looked divine! Cassie, the waitress is the epitome of waitresses! Very attentive, responsive, accommodating (for dietary restrictions), simply delightful!
Muktha T — Google review
We were a group of 18 and was seated and one of the large rooms in the lower floor. The room was fantastic, spacious, and gave us a private space for interactions. Our server was very attentive a patient. I ordered the cod fish burger and I would definitely ordered again. Portions was great, tons of fries. The clam chowder was excellent as well, and I particularly like the fact that it was not salted too heavily, like many other restaurants do. Chunks of fish were present. I would say the carrot cake was okay. It's not as small as some of the better ones I have tasted but that may be my own particular preference.

Located at 325 Duckworth Street, The Duke of Duckworth is a vibrant and lively pub in St. Johns, Newfoundland. It has been an integral part of the city's social scene for over 25 years. The cozy interior features a small bar, dining area, and pool table. The pub offers classic bar bites and an extensive selection of draft beers. However, when it comes to the best Fish & Chips in St.
Friendliest loveliest people my husband wanted to come here because of television series Republic of Doyle we stopped in for a beer and an appetiser cod bites. It is more like a meal. It was huge portion. Great atmosphere, nice vibes. You can get your pint engraved with any picture you want. It was fun. I guess you need to have a good head of foam so we chose Guinness poured by an expert. Fish chowder with out shell fish! It was delicious. We plant to return here tomorrow! Came back 2 days later the fish and chips were perfect!!

Down the steps; nearly always a queue - BUT worth it. Great atmosphere and great servers. Have Premier league football matches on multiple screens. Had the Newfoundland special of Fish and chips with a side of gravy and dressing (which is how locals eat their fish+chips Chips). I was skeptical but it was really good. RECOMMEND
Tarun Y — Google review
I tried the fish and chips at The Duke of Duckworth in St. John’s, and it was a treat. I had fresh cod: one perfectly golden-fried and the other gently baked. The fried piece practically melted in my mouth, that wide-eyed moment of pure delight. The tartar sauce, possibly house-made, was far better than the usual kind I’ve had. I also got a side salad, which was fresh and crisp. Overall, the meal was fantastic, and the whole place gives off a cozy english pub vibe that made the experience even better.

It was a Saturday evening so tables were in high demand. I didn't realise how small the place was. I shared a table. The staff brought over a place setting, but never came back for my order. So I went to the bar instead and was served by a lovely lady. The fish and chips were as advertised - very good. So was the local beer.

Best fish and chips I’ve ever had. It’s light yet flavourful - definitely worth the hype. Decent portion size as well. I got gravy on the side (not pictured) which was good but I don’t think necessary as the fish is good on its own, or with tartar sauce+vinegar which comes free. They also take AMEX. I’d come back and will be recommending to friends and family! 😋

Great place! Went I walked in, I felt I walked in a pub in Europe. I had the pan fried fish & chip and it was delicious! Fish was well seasoned, tasty and perfectly cooked. Fries were also perfect. I accompanied my meal with black horse beer. Noah explained to me it is only brewed in NL. I remember the brand name from when I was a child and have not seen that beer for a very long time…. Noah came back after he served me to make sure everything was good.

Down a narrow street, The Duke Of Duckworth is an iconic St. Johns bar that has been around for a while now. The first thing you will notice is the ambience. Basically, its your standard small bar with tapered history all along the walls. I decided to order their fish and chips with dressing and gravy. The fish was super moist, flakey, and fresh. While the batter was melt in your mouth, seasoned well, and had an airiness to it. The fries were also fresh and tasted even better with the gravy. I always cover my fish and chips with malt vinegar and tartar sauce for extra acidity to cut the extreme savouriness of the fried foods. Overall, everything was quite nice. The only downsides are the pricing. The fish and chips and quite expensive in comparison to a lot of other spots in the area. If you are a tourist, its a worthwhile visit for sure.

A local favourite, and for good reason! This cozy spot has a fun atmosphere, great staff, and absolutely delicious food and beer. We both went with the fish & chips, and you can choose fried or baked — we went fried. Our server recommended upgrading the fries to Newfoundland style (bread crumbs and gravy on top), and wow… well worth it! The fish was super fresh and flavorful. For drinks, we tried the famous Iceberg beer from Quidi Vidi Brewery, brewed with 15,000-year-old iceberg water. While the concept is really cool and unique to Newfoundland, the beer itself was honestly a bit mid in my opinion. I’d recommend trying other brews from Quidi Vidi instead. Overall, we had a great time here — fresh food, cozy vibes, and a true local staple. Can definitely see why both tourists and locals love it!

Located at 166 Duckworth St, St. Johns, Ches's Famous Fish & Chips is a must-visit spot for those craving the best fish and chips in Newfoundland. Since 1951, this popular restaurant has been serving up fresh cod straight from the boat alongside hand-cut fries. With seven locations across Newfoundland, locals and travelers alike flock to Ches's for a taste of authentic Newfoundland cuisine.
Jonna was lovely, provided amazing service for us first timers. We loved the fries and homemade gravy. Fish was decent - a good price! And the snowballs were tasty. Very laid back atmosphere for some comfort food.

Rumoured to be the best place in town for fish and chips, but I came for the chips, dressing and gravy! This place is a step back into time. Old style diner type vibes. Plenty of indoor seating and a menu that pretty much revolves around a fryer. My chips, dressing and gravy was legit a comfort food dish I never knew I needed!!! Why is this only happening in Newfoundland?? Definitely worth a visit if you want to try a local favorite.

Cool place to dine in family, we arrive the whole family of 17 and we kindly ask if they could accommodate us, without blinking the lady opened the private area and staff cleaned the entire table for us to sit, such a proactive employee and nice people, she apologized for only having plastic glasses but we were completely happy and didn’t even pay attention to the glasses, food was served in a reasonable time , good very generous and everyone was happy, they divided the bill in 3 i have never seen that , they divided the entire bill like one fish and schips is like 12 bucks and we got each 4 bucks to pay, that was so smart and so easy to pay attention the counter. We gave a generous tip because they were very effective

An old style diner, has a nice atmosphere, lots of seating, and appeared clean. I ordered a two piece fish & chips, cod tongues and cheeks. The fish tasted fresh and had a fluffy, crispy, light tasting batter without seasoning. The cheeks and tongues were both tasty, the tongues were a bit slimy. In all, it was an average but good meal. The portion size for the meal was good and it was a decent price. They have a nice homemade vinegar. The Iceberg Beer was great, but I didn't get a glass with it. Our server, Tracy, was friendly and attentive. We had an enjoyable, relaxing dinner here.

Had the opportunity to dine at Ches’s after a bit of a longer day. Our group was warmly greeted by Ariel when we arrived. She was absolutely top-notch as a server. The Seafood platter was definitely top notch and hit the spot. Paired with a pint of Newfoundland‘s iceberg beers, it definitely was a memorable experience. If you are ever in St. John’s, I would definitely recommend giving a spot a try.

Solid fish and chips with crispy batter over very fresh cod, unseasoned. Fries were good but not as crunchy as I would like, gravy was delicious. Cod tongue app was just ok. I appreciate the homemade vinegar and seasoning options. Old diner vibe, waitress was friendly enough but could have smiled more. Excellent location and fast service.

Chinese restaurant
Nestled in the heart of St. John's, Magic Wok Eatery is a delightful haven for lovers of Hong Kong-style cuisine. This charming restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere where guests can indulge in authentic dishes that pay homage to traditional Chinese flavors. With a focus on dim sum and an impressive 12-course tasting menu, diners are treated to a culinary journey that showcases the rich history of Chinese-Canadian food.
This was my first visit here in a long time; and it's even better than I remember! The decor is nice and "peaceful" and you're not squished on top of the other patrons. The staff were super friendly and professional and the food was on the table within 15 minutes. The food was great! No buffet style, gulp and go type of fare here! At this restaurant it's made to order and brought to your table. The menu is quite large and the prices are very reasonable! Definitely worth a visit!

We had a group of 14 to celebrate a graduation party. The food and the service was excellent. The sweet and sour chicken was outstanding among the other dishes. Waiters and waitresses were very friendly and helpful. The ambience of the restaurant was good. Only disappointment we had was that we were seated on two separate tables and request to join the tables was denied. Overall experience was excellent and value for money.
Senarath G — Google review
Taste was overall fine. A bit too heavy on the corn starch, especially the soup. The texture was almost jello. Thick soups in Chinese cuisine are cooked slow with the help of a hint of corn starch. The soup here was thickened quickly by adding a ton of corn starch. Same goes for the dishes we ordered. Everything was glazed over by a thick layer of corn starch. If you are looking for authentic, this place is not that. It is adapted Chinese food. (I suppose that’s authentic North American Chinese food…) One thing I am happy about is despite the overpowering sauce, the food was not too salty, as many North Americanized Chinese restaurants are. Service was excellent.

As a regular at Magic Wok, I can confidently say the service is fantastic. Friendly and prompt every single time! They have a huge menu, which can sometimes be overwhelming, but here it's a good thing. Everything I've tried has been delicious. If you're looking for a recommendation, their BBQ Pork with rice noodles (#99) is incredible. Highly recommend Magic Wok for anyone craving authentic Chinese food!

Amazing authentic Chinese food, large menu with wide variety of dishes including dim sum. Comfortable seating and excellent service. Good for families and large groups
Nancy L — Google review
The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was tasty. The deep fried BBQ pork bun had a lot of flavour but I thought it would be bigger. The sweet & sour pork was spot on but it was strange that it tomatoes instead of red pepper in it. But it was still tasty overall. The egg roll was flavoursome. I liked it. The crispy wonton was wonton sheets deep fried. It wasn't deep fried wonton balls with shrimp & pork in it. But it was still good with the sauce. The coconut pudding was a coconut filling in batter, deep fried and dusted with icing sugar. It was sweet to end the meal. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and the service was good too. I would come back here and try other dishes on the menu.

Bad Bones Ramen is a cozy spot on Water Street that has gained popularity for its delicious ramen and Japanese small plates. Despite being relatively new to the restaurant scene, it has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The restaurant offers a variety of slurpable ramen bowls, such as Pork Belly Tonkotsu with Duck Egg Noodle and Vegetable Shoyu with Mushroom Dashi and Rice Noodle.
Food was truly delicious - haven't had a meal I enjoyed this thoroughly in a long time. We were smiling ear to ear from the first sip of broth. The Pork Tantanmen was particularly yummy! Our waiter, whose name I sadly didn't get, was energetic, welcoming, cheerful, and happy to help explain any of the dishes we weren't familiar with. The atmosphere is very laid back and informal, which honestly just adds to the ambiance of the place. Not cheap, but the servings reflect what you are paying, my partner and I both got two meals out of our ramen bowls. We will definitely be back for more whenever we are next in town.
Owen B — Google review
Bad Bones Ramen provides great food, ample service, and a wonderfully unique and refreshing atmosphere. The chicken shoyu was a delight. The portions were generous, the ingredients were fresh, and the presentation was lovely. It was easy to see the effort put into the dish. The service provided was more than sufficient. I never had to ask for a refill on my water, and the waiter checked in often enough without being a nuisance. There was plenty of seating available during dinner hours. The dining area was clean, well-lit, and pleasantly quiet, allowing for proper conversation. The decor was good, and the staff music taste was on point. The ceilings near the bathrooms are a bit low, especially if you're a taller person like myself. However, that's a given for most buildings in the downtown area. I absolutely can't recommend this place enough. Considering the steep decline in quality for most other dine-in restaurants, Bad Bones absolutely knocks it out of the park in comparison. I will be eating here again in the future.
Nick B — Google review
We definitely enjoyed our ramen here. We had the pork belly shoyu. The broth is well developed and pork belly and egg were perfect. The broth is a little rich, and sits heavier than most ramens. It’s a few tweaks away to go from good to great, in our opinion. Service was good. We could see them working in the kitchen, and it was clean how much attention and care was given to presentation and preparing each bowl fresh. It was definitely worth the wait.
Alyssa B — Google review
This is such a lovely spot, and I have to say, the staff was so friendly! We came down during the pedestrian mall, and had no trouble finding a spot to sit down at around 1PM. Everything was decorated nicely, and it was really clean too. We ordered almost right away and had some dumplings, which were honestly my favorite! And before we could even finish those, we had our main dish come out. The broth was absolutely amazing, and all the toppings were fresh and cooked really well. Our server was so kind, and the atmosphere was wonderful! We seen a few people pick up some orders too, so if you didn't want to eat in, that seems like a great option.
Amber K — Google review
Bad Bones Ramen has a cute and fun location that immediately catches your eye. The ambiance is lively and inviting, making it a great spot for a casual meal or a hangout with friends. The staff here are excellent—friendly, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. However, while the atmosphere and service shine, the ramen itself doesn't quite hit the mark. It's not bad, but it falls short of the high expectations set by the rather steep prices. For the cost, one would anticipate a more memorable culinary experience. If you’re looking for a fun spot with great service, Bad Bones Ramen is worth a visit, but ramen aficionados might find the quality doesn’t justify the price tag.
Kenneth G — Google review
Generous with meat Cooked to perfection pork belly and chicken kastu The broth is tasty but not too salty. Overall the food is authentic at the meatier side( better for Canadians) . Also it's presentable topped up with lots of healthy veggies. We found our ramen place in this city!
Shuai H — Google review
Over the last 2.5 years I’ve tried all of their main broths - Miso, Shoyu, Tantanmen, and Dirty shrimp. Initially, they were pretty good; however, recently all of them have been bland and lacking in flavour. It has been a constant let down in the past year. Ironically, as their quality of ramen constantly decreased, their prices continuously increased, and it gets harder and harder to justify the price of their unappetizing ramen. Noodle Nami on Rowan St. has arguably better ramen for ~$4-5 less. The one good thing Bad Bones has going for them are their side dishes - they are a great bang for your buck. All in all, if you’ve ever had half-decent ramen in another city, I’d recommend you skip out on Bad Bones for your ramen cravings in St. John’s.
Wooje C — Google review
Exceeded my expectations. We ordered the Pork Tantanmen and Pork Belly Shoyu. Both had plenty of pork and a good amount of noodles and vegetables. Also added the homemade hot sauce which was sweet and spicy. It's not quite traditional but was quite good. Service was good and efficient for having only one person on staff for the whole restaurant. Decor was familiar for a ramen restaurant with the menu on a wall chalkboard and benches along the wall and chairs on the other side. Would definitely recommend.

The Nook and Cannery, located in the old Big R location on Harvey Road, seamlessly blends into its surroundings. Chef Amy Anthony's ever-changing menu features sandwiches with jammy eggs, comforting soups, Asian-influenced grain bowls, and messy fries. A must-try is the Trini Doubles - a fusion of Newfoundland and Trinidadian cuisines using curry-yellowed toutons filled with black beans, chickpeas, zucchini, and pickled shallots.
Loved the space with all the colours, the charm of staff greeting and serving us. One of the best meals in St. John's with great creative vegetarian options. We shared two dishes: Glory bowl made of seasoned fried marinated tofu, puffed rice, cherry tomatoes, seared broccoli and kale with picked sweet onion and Poached Pear with fennel and goat cheese salad. Note that their updated menu is on their Facebook page. Their butterfly pea flower and rhubarb lemonade was quite nice and refreshing. Make sure you stop by here before or after visiting The Rooms.

The Nook and Cannery feels like a homely place. The food feels fresh, rich, flavourful and made with care, complimenting the decor and atmosphere of the place. Many of their dishes have a touch of fusion, combining elements from different parts of the world, and it's done well in my opinion. They'll also ask you about elements you'd like to exclude/include in a dish, and if not, feel free to ask them. Lot of gluten-free options! They also have a lot of pretty and tasty baked goods. Had my friend invite us here because he loves the place, and after visiting, "Will definitely come back again!" felt like a hearty and honest review of the place. Prices are alright - even if it feels slightly on the higher side, the portions are adequate. When we visited on a Saturday evening, the place wasn't that crowded.

I’ve eaten here numerous times and have loved every bite. The food is delicious, fresh, interesting and hearty and will fill you up. Salads and bowls are a feast for your eyes too. Definitely a must if you’re in St. John’s! It’s a tiny place so go early to beat the lines - cause you know a place with a line up means good things inside.

Nook and Cannery is our favourite spot in the city. Amazing and nourishing food with lots of options for everyone. There’s finally a place in the city where the gluten free (celiac) vegetarian can eat with friends and family and everyone gets what they want! We cannot say enough good about this place and how important they are to the community.

One of the more creative diners in town. Great food, flexible for gluten free options, vegan or vegetarian. I still go for the chicken or meat options but haven’t had a bad meal here. The popcorn chicken that I had last time was fun and tasty. The pot stickers were also great. Highly recommended.

Megan and crew have nice energy and seem to enjoy working with each other. Creates a nice atmosphere. Really liked the varied menu options. Husband liked the large portion. I've been here five times now and have had excellent experiences every time. Excellent service and food. Great atmosphere with nan-chic decor and good music vibes. A wonderfully queer-friendly space, I can't recommend this place enough. It's honestly my favourite spot in town.

Excellent spot for a healthy hearty lunch. I had the glory bowl and oh my goodness it was...glorious. the sauce was incredible. Tofu done perfectly. A wonderful assortment of perfectly prepped veggies to go with it. My husband had the black bean burger and fries which were amazing. We often have trouble finding good vegan food when we travel but this place hits the spot and has many vegan options. Our server was delightful as well. We ordered one of each of their vegan pastries to go and had them for breakfast the next morning. I don't know how they make their vegan puff pastry but I'm going to be asking for the recipe next time.

Oliver's Restaurant is a contemporary neighborhood eatery located on Water Street, offering a cozy and intimate atmosphere for diners. The restaurant features leather booths and banquettes, creating a relaxing ambiance to enjoy a variety of dishes. Whether it's brunch favorites like breakfast banana splits and eggs benedict or evening staples such as seafood pasta, portobello mushroom wellington, and lamb shank, Oliver's has something for everyone.
We had the best dinner to celebrate our friend’s birthday at Oliver’s Restaurant. We had the most amazing experience at this restaurant. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming, washroom was clean, and the music was very pleasant. The service was excellent, our server Cecilia was super sweet, very friendly and knowledgeable. We definitely had the best moment because of her, and she was the only server + bartender, and we never felt that we were missing attention even if the place was half full. Now the food, it was just delicious, we ordered: - Lemon pepper Calamari - Local Mussels - Seafood platter - Balsamic chicken fettuccine - a Daily special that was a halibut on top of risotto with Brie cheese, so delicious! All the food was amazing, we shared all for 4 people and we were more than full. The table favourites were the risotto and the fettuccine. Also bread and maple butter was provided and was perfect, warm and whipped butter on a fresh baguette, yummy ! We also received a special dessert to celebrate our friend birthday and we were so amazing about the amazing chocolate brownie and the caramel cheesecake, we will definitely come back for more !

Everything was great! The restaurant was clean, with a cozy and comfortable seating area. The staff and servers were kind, friendly, and welcoming. The food was reasonably priced, with generous portions and good quality. The only issue for me personally was the salt level — the food was a bit too salty for my taste. If you're someone who enjoys more salt in your meals, it might be fine for you, but I found it a bit overwhelming. In my opinion, restaurant food should be seasoned more moderately, since customers have different preferences. You can always add more salt, but you can’t take it out. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend it for people with high blood pressure or salt sensitivity — even though the food was really delicious. Personally, due to my sensitivity to salt, I probably wouldn’t go back.

We had a wonderful experience at Oliver’s Restaurant. From the moment we walked in, the cozy atmosphere and courteous service made us feel welcome and relaxed. I ordered the halibut over risotto, and my partner had the seafood platter —both dishes were absolutely delicious. I also tried the Seafood chowder, which turned out to be one of the best meals we've had in Newfoundland. We were a bit tired of eating m fried food - which unfortunately you find a lot in the suburb- so we were thrilled to find such flavorful and well-prepared options. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a refined yet comfortable dining experience.

We had a wonderful time at Oliver’s, our server Danielle was great and very helpful. One person in our group had a celiac allergy and they were very accommodating. She could eat everything except for the chowder. We had just flown into St. John’s and it was the perfect place to go. The food was amazing.

From being greeted so nicely to the absolutely amazing food. Great experience. Both of our meals were incredible, great portion size and so fresh. Our waitress was wonderful and very friendly. Welcomed us so nicely. We enjoyed it so much we may have it at least one more time on our trip.

The food is good but not great. We orders the Oliver Salad, which was by far the best thing we ordered and it is a great salad that we shared. We ordered the Korean Duck Wings. This is a dish orders might think is unique and great tasting. It did not taste like duck, the BBQ sauce slightly overwhelmed the duck taste. We shared the Seafood Platter for a main course. It was average with the scallops overcooked. Many menu items are ambitious so would I come back? Yes I would but without improvement, no more for me. The service here is excellent among the best we had in NL.

We travelled from Calgary to St, Johns for a short visit and stopped in this restaurant for a dinner. We had fettuccini with mussels and shrimps. Highly recommended, food is tasteful, great portion and reasonable price. Staff are very friendly, great customer service from the waitresses. Had the chowder and pan-fried cod, both were absolutely amazing! The cod was fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. Definitely a must-try for a true taste of Newfoundland cuisine. The service was okay, it wasn’t bad, but it felt a bit rushed and less attentive than expected. Still, the food made up for it. Would go back for the chowder alone!

A really nice place to dine! Great atmosphere, decor, menu of food and drinks, with a daily special menu as well. Patrick, our waiter was great, helpful w recommendations, personal and excellent, wuth very professional service skills. Prices can be on the high side, but overall experience was very good. I ordered the Newfoundland oysters, lots of sea flavour but a little disappointing as they were seasonally very small. The accompanying fresh shaved horseradish was a very unique add on enhancing the dish. The Cod dish was done well with a slight hoisin like sauce, very flavourful. My wifes 1.5 lbs(small size) Newfoundland lobster plate of was delicious, however I was found the Newfoundland lobster to be a tougher version than Maine/Atlantic lobster that I'm used to, but still overall full of flavour. My friends had the 2.5lb version while an even larger 3.5lb version was available. Overall, a great dining experience, but be sure to make reservations early as getting a table is exceptionally challenging. Highly recommended.

Absolutely delicious meal and stellar atmosphere. We had to sit at the bar because we didn’t have a reservation (my bad), but the bartender gave exceptional service and made amazing mocktails! At the best price downtown that I’ve come across. Will definitely come back during my stay in St. John’s so I can enjoy a more sit-down experience with a reserved table.

We wanted fresh Newfoundland lobster. This is the place! It has a somewhat large menu, not that it’s a bad thing.. just that there were SO many items we wanted to try. Ultimately we ordered the Mussels in White Wine sauce and Ahi Tuna tacos for Apps, mains were Seared Halibut and Whole Fresh Lobster. Everything was full of flavour and a good portion size. The only hiccup of the night was when we found hair in my vegetables, which was taken care of instantly and without question. The atmosphere is a decent dim lighting so you can enjoy the views of the harbour yet still eat abs maneuver through the restaurant. Overall I highly recommend SJFX and will make sure it’s a stop on our next adventure to St. John’s.

This is my second time at fish exchange, i had fish and chips the first time. It was good, not memorable. I decided to go back and try the crab legs, which were absolutely devine and the cajun butter was perfect. My entree however, a tuna tartar was bland and not cut properly which was a disappointment. Id go back for their crab legs. My friend asked me to take a lobster mac n cheese to go for her. The waitress said it was her favourite thing in the menu... wish she'd had mention that when I asked her what were the most popular things on n the menu. I tried the mac as well, ill know what to oder nxt time!!! It was delicious.

I had the Atlantic Lobster, it did not disappoint! The garlic mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment and the vegetables came hot and cooked perfectly! My server was awesome, friendly and helpful! I might go back just to have another exchange with her! Without her I would have not known how or what to eat my lobster! Love this place!

We walked in around 5PM & it was surprisingly busy! Brought my boyfriend for his birthday & when I looked online there was nowhere to make a reso. The hosted asked if we had one, I said no there wasn’t anymore to make one on the website, then she said you have to call in.. very inconvenient & not well advertised! Anyways, we got a table luckily. The website & Instagram said they had happy hour but apparently only at the bar? Again, not well advertised. Our server was very nice & offered us our first drink at happy hour pricing. We ordered a couple margaritas which tasted a little watery but otherwise good. We ordered the steak sandwiches with mashed potatoes & baby potatoes which saved the day! Absolutely delicious! The steak was cooked perfectly. Highly recommend!

If you're looking to have a good seafood experience with a good atmosphere, it's worth the wait. It's Saturday 7pm and the wait time for sitting at the bar is 40mins to 1hr. We didn't have a reservation, walked in and put our names on the wait-list. We waited 50 minutes and sat down at one of their high tops. The place is very busy and the staff are quite friendly and hospitable. Ordered the lobster and shrimp pappardelle and overall was tasty but didn't have much of a seafood taste. Unfortunately we found our seafood portions to be quite chewy. Overall would return.

Absolutely fabulous! Like the new menu structure. The wine pairing was amazing. Update: menu has changed again. Always makes it fresh. If you're going to do the tasting menu, go all in and do the full 7 course. The 5 course tends to be a bit sparse. The 3 course now has much better variety then in the past. Recommend this with wine pairing as well.

Amazing. Pretty expensive. We had the 5 course tasting menu + wine pairing. Worth the price. Highlight of our trip. Special thanks to the sommelier she did an amazing job. Local and high quality food.

Excellent service as always! Seated immediately, has a beautiful window view. Offered drinks by waiter extremely fast. Explained the specialty items clearly. Was given bread to start which seemed very fresh. Meals came out fast on hot plates which helped keep the meal warm while eating. Delicious flavors. Plenty of food/bang for your buck. On the way out, got a thank you from the owner Jerry. Offered us discounts to come back in new year. Fantastic evening! 10/10

Had an amazing meal here! Came here because Anthony Bourdain dined here during his last trip to Canada. It is the nicest restaurant I’ve seen in St John’s. I did the 7 course menu because I wanted to try everything they had to offer. The portions were small, which I didn’t mind because I don’t eat a lot. The bread wasn’t very good. The razor clams were very fresh. The pasta dish was probably my favourite. It also came with 2 fish dishes, which I didn’t really enjoy as much as I enjoyed the duck. And the set dessert was a strawberry one, which I switched out for a chocolate one. So I’m glad they were able to accommodate me. The service was fabulous and what you’d expect at a fine dining setting. I highly recommend locals and tourists to dine here.

I don’t believe there’s anything quite like it other than in Montreal - perhaps! This is fine dining at its best in Canada. Attention is paid down to the last and finest detail. You won’t find better quality, taste and presentation anywhere. Their building is indicative of what you may expect. When the owner goes to such lengths to locate inside such such a beautiful building, you may imagine the enormous effort put into each plate by the chef. The staff is second to none. You will not be disappointed.

This is a fantastic place to have a meal prepared by one of the greatest chefs in Canada, the famous Jeremy Charles. The menu is a tasting menu, so your selection is limited to one of three set menus... But there is plenty of flexibility within those menus, and as someone that doesn't enjoy seafood, there were enough options that I was able to enjoy every bite.
Bryan B — Google review
The service and food were spectacular, hence the reason this place is one of the top restaruants in Newfoundland. Yes the price might be a little high for some, but well worth it. Not a place to come to if you're looking for a burger or wings.

So Disappointed...... My wife and I spend 3-4 month a year traveling around checking out cool restaurants, breweries and wineries. We have visited some of the best in North America. When we heard about Raymond’s while searching the best restaurants in St. John’s I quickly made a reservation 9pm on a Wednesday. We arrived about 8:50 to a very welcoming happy host and were promptly seated in the corner of the great room. Water was brought to the table (we opted for tap water) and we started checking out the menu. Then it all falls apart. 25 minutes pass before our server returns, she jokes how we have had lots of time reviewing the menu, she takes our drink order and my wife kind of indicates we are ready to order noticing how slow the service is. The server says she will be back with the drinks then take the order another 10 minutes go by and she returns. 35 minutes in now to get a $14 cocktail. Again she jokes how long it takes her to serve us. We place our order for a cheese board and 3 course meal (recommended by a local). Nearly 15 minutes later it arrived (6 small pieces of cheese $35) it only took a few moments to eat since we have had nothing to this point and have been there 60 minutes. At this point we have had enough of the poor service (as were were not checked on between any of the previous visits by server, our water glasses sat empty for 15 a couple times) We get up and head to the front where we are met by the amazing server whom had been serving the table beside (4+ courses while we were there) she knew what the problem was without even hearing it and promptly get the manager. The manager is great! He convinces us to stay and be personally looked after by him. He covers our two cocktails and cheese board ($63) Quickly brings out a tasty well balanced raw scallop on lettuce. (5/5) Next we have a fried scallop with white turnip ribbon with beurre blanc sauce. This dish was very bland and tasteless, the scallop was well cooked. (2/5) Our main course was the duck it was delicious, initially thought it to be bland but it ended up well cooked. The duck came with roasted broccoli a little arugula and parsnip. The vegetables were not creative or well seasoned. (3/5) To finish I had the blueberry dessert it was like a yoghurt parfait with a delicious blueberry gelato. It was good but for the cost of the meal I would expect something more creative. (3/5) Service by the manager was just as you would expect, he was prompt, kept our water glasses full, folder our napkins when we got up. The level of service you would expect at this type of restaurant. Overall I think you might have to order the 5 or 8 course meals to have a creative food experience. The building is beautiful, some servers are great (the table beside us got to meet the chef) maybe because we were young (~35) and started with tap water we did not receive great service. Overall ended up being over $250 with the cheese board and 1st round of drinks covered. I am a business owner and feel the only way to make up for such a horrible start would be to cover the entire meal or at-least do something above and beyond. Save your money, go to Mallard Cottage!

The restaurant has been serving up comfort food since 2006 in a beautiful heritage building with warm interiors. Their specialty lies in local seafood, offering dishes like seared calamari with chili oil and fresh mussels in spicy bourbon cream sauce.
Very nice place, looks great and makes you feel comfortable as soon as you open the door. We didnt make any reservation on Vday and they were nice enough to find us a table. Our waiter/bartender Michael is the BESTEST. He is always smiling, has great people skills, is a talented bartender and fun, even on a busy night! The food was great. I had the Antipasto & the Brie Bundles. My friend had the Shrimps appetizer and the Ossoloni. Everything was great, well cooked, great presentation, generous portions. Ask him to surprise you with a drink and you won't be disappointed! He even gave us recommendations in the city! 10/10 Would go back anytime!

Overall a nice experience. Our waiter was very nice and friendly. The food was also pretty good, but nothing exceptional. The salmon, however, was really good. I would certainly recommend trying this restaurant if you're downtown St. John's.

Really enjoyed dinner at Get Stuffed. It’s a great restaurant. The food is delicious. We had the antipasto and chowder for appetizers and the beef phylo (special) and the hazelnut chicken for mains. Everybody said they enjoyed their food. The atmosphere is interesting. The old building and narrow staircase contribute to the quaint feel of the place. The staff is really great as well. They’re very friendly and professional, considerate and quick to notice when the water glasses are empty. One guy even noticed that one of the tables had uneven legs and fixed the tilt for the guests. The one negative aspect of our visit was a waitress who served us water came to the table smelling strongly of smoke, she had probably just returned from her smoke break. Overall I’d recommend Get Stuffed and I plan to come back.

Great place to try local seafood. More of a personal preference, but I found the sauces / flavours to be a bit overpowering for our dishes - which concealed the seafood taste. The restaurant is cozy inside, especially by the window. Overall a good experience.

We visited for my nephew‘s 21st birthday. First they made space for us in a very crowded restaurant, which on its own was great service. Then on top of that, we lucked into the most amazing waiter. Lloyde was fabulous from start to finish. He made us feel welcome and was very attentive and efficient. Despite how busy it was he had a warm smile on his face each time he stopped by. My nephew said it was the best meal he’s ever had!!! Couldn’t have asked for more 😊 Thank you!!!

I stopped by given this place was right in front of the hotel I was staying at and had a great experience. I ordered the prime rib, asked for medium rare, and did they ever deliver! The prime rib was tender and very flavourful on its own. A forewarning, their horseradish is fresh and insanely powerful, good pairing to the prime rib as with the aux-juis. Likewise, the service was wonderful and food came in a timely manner, tables and area was clean and staff was very welcoming and friendly. This place has great scenery and views of the port and docked vessels!!

Amazing dinner & service at the Keg St. John’s. Everything was perfect from the drinks, the starters, mains and dessert. The mocktails were priced appropriately, and the food was absolutely delicious. Our wonderful server, Daniella, made the experience exceptional. And thank you to the hostess for the window seat - travelled across the country so it was nice to enjoy the harbour view. Pictured: lobster dinner, the salmon main (honey mustard glaze), and crème-brûlée!

Fish 'n chips after a hockey game? OH YAH! When you leave the Mary Brown's Centre and it's almost 10 so most kitchens are closed but a quick search online through Google & Skip to see what might still be food within walking distance...behold, Bridie Malloys! 🎺 My fish was hot, crispy, and the batter was quite good. I actually had the SUPREME fish n chips which came with fries smothered in rich gravy and some veg. Think like a hot sandwich almost. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and glad I did good with resisting the arena concessions 😅

Absolutely loved this place! Live music early in the night, lots of seating and spots at the bar, kitchen and bar staff were fast and very nice and they had lots of food/drink options. Their jiggs dinner pie was absolutely delicious, tasted just like my nanny's jiggs dinner just in pie form. Big chunks of salt beef which was delicious. Good price too. I will absolutely be returning next time I’m in St. John’s.

The food was alright. The atmosphere was great with live music (Alex Dinn). The service however was disappointing. We spent a good 45 mins without service before impatience kicked in and we flagged someone down. And even after that, it was sparse. It wasn't that the servers were rude or anything, they were quite pleasant during our interactions. But I suspect our table fell through the cracks of a shift change, and no one noticed.

The greasy looking bouncer (male) aggressively shoved my friend (5’2 female) and swatted her drink out of her hand. Under no circumstance should a man ever lay a hand on a woman. We were absolutely horrified along with several patrons who prompted us to call the police. After the incident we spoke to the female manager, she completely disregarded us and told us to just leave. The bouncer continued his shift. Absolutely shocking behaviour, not only as professionals but as humans. Do not support this place.

Family restaurant
RJ Pinoy Yum, located on Ropewalk Lane, is a popular Filipino restaurant in St. Johns. The restaurant offers a variety of flavorful dishes such as sizzling pork belly, crispy tofu, and tangy sauces served on cast iron platters.
Finally checked this place out today and was not disappointed! No wait for a table, pleasant staff, very well organized menu, and a very clean and comfortable setting. Had the tempura shrimp taco and my friend had the pork belly taco, and they were both amazing, he even got more to take home! For dessert we split the halo-halo and it was amazing! Cold, creamy, and a mix of so many different but complimentary flavors and textures. Couldn't recommend it enough, definitely will be back to try more of their dishes!

It was a fantastic experience again for 2nd time! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it perfect for a casual meal. The staff was attentive and friendly, ensuring felt right at home. The food Lomi Overload was delicious, with authentic Filipino flavors that truly impressed. Each one was cooked to perfection. Overall, it was a delightful experience, and I can't wait to return!
Ye Z — Google review
TL;DR: RJ Pinoy Yum is a great place to have a full meal or a quick bite, try out the filipino cuisine and have a great experience altogether, in terms of both taste and service. When we ordered our food, we grossly underestimated the portion sizes they offered! This makes it a great value for money and also a good place for a group visit! We tried the Wonton Nachos, Lomi Overload, Mango Graham Shake and Pansit Canton. The milkshake felt like a breath of fresh, tropical air with the snow outside. We felt everything that was offered was fresh and generous. Seasoning was a bit on the lower side, but that's reasonable since you could adjust much of it later and leaves room for preferences. The Wonton Nachos was such a simple but savoury dish! Overall, I wouldn't say everything was mouthwateringly delicious, but fulfilling enough to go back time and again! The people here took great care of informing you about components of a dish that you could possibly have an issue with, offering replacements if possible. They were also very amiable and pleasantly concerned about your comfort and experience. The place looks minimal but pretty, with bold colours and gorgeous photos of their dishes. There's a board at the entrance where you could leave a note - that's a singular feature which would stand out to you in terms of aesthetics.

Courtney C — Google review
This was my first foray into Filipino food and I had a great experience. The portions here are moderate and the food tastes great. The spicy foods aren't over spiced as a tolerance test, but instead rely on the blend of spices to achieve the desired result. The non-spicy dishes were similarly flavourful. There are choices for either end of the preferred palate spectrum. The service was speedy and polite. The atmosphere of the restaurant is well suited to table conversation. I was pleased to note the complete absence of any wall mounted TVs, or loud music competing with the table talk.
Adam B — Google review
Stopped in for a quick lunch of a different flavour so i ordered the Pansit with Shrimp and Spring Rolls. The Pansit was a really nice fresh plate of noodles and shrimp that livened up with a squeeze of lime. Very good. The Spring Rolls were thick and crisp. Nice light flavour very filling. Prices were reasonable and the service was friendly and informative. They are celebrating a 3 year anniversary and I wish them many more years of service .

If you're on the hunt for a delightful dining experience in St. John's, look no further than Golden Phoenix Buffet. This casual eatery offers an impressive all-you-can-eat buffet that beautifully blends Chinese and Canadian comfort foods. Guests rave about the extensive selection, which includes unique offerings like Hot and Sour Soup—an absolute must-try! First-time visitors will be greeted with warm hospitality; the staff is known for their friendliness and attentiveness, ensuring everyone feels welcome.
What happened to Golden Phoenix??? The Missus and I had 3 meals at the Golden Phoenix in 2016 during our visit to St. John's. The food was excellent and the restaurant was hopping then. We highly suggested to our Westcoast Express traveling group on our recent trip but were so highly disappointed. It was downright embarrassing taking our group there. The food taste and quality were terrible. Lots of battered food and water downed soups. It was definitely not worth the buffet price of almost $30 per person. It appeared the restaurant was running on its past reputation and something happened after covid. Definitely will be giving Golden Phoenix a skip the next time in St. John's and trying other eateries in the area.
B W — Google review
First of all I want to commend this business for daring to open their buffet back up following the pandemic. Congratulations. However the food quality has gone downhill. I feel bad writing this as I loved going there. Nothing on the buffet was of the quality I expected. The chicken balls were not fresh at all. It was frozen to fryer and not homemade. Won tons were burnt up. Won ton soup was cold. The beef with broccoli was just ok but the rest of the items were sub par. Hopefully they will improve because it’s the last buffet left and with this quality it will not last. Please improve.
Terry — Google review
Place has gotten even worse, Saturday night, which should be thier busiest night, barely anyone there, the food was subpar, and the bill for two was $80 Last time there for sure, we gave them another chance and it was terrible.

Ordered 100 bucks Worth in food and got pretty much nothing. Super small portions for the price. A cup of Mr nooodles would be more than what they sent us for noodles. And please don't even get me started on the beef and broccoli it was disgusting it came as the small portion as the noodles did and it was unacceptable I called Golden Phoenix and ask them what they replace this order and they said no! if you do not like it order somewhere else. so please if you have a family and you eat Chinese food often please save your money and do not go to Golden Phoenix. There are way better Chinese food restaurants around .. I will not be back ..

It pains me to leave this review. I've loved this place since its hey-day and dies for a greasy ol feed. The food, not the worst, but slipped immensely. The service is non-existent. What kills me is the condition of the dining room. Doubt there has been a bucket of bleach in the room in years. Walls are grimy, signage is tattered and gross, carpets so sticky that you can hear people walk. It makes me wonder what it's like in the kitchen and other places not seen. Would love to see this place cleaned up before it's inevitably shuttered.
Tanya H — Google review
Huge serving of food. I just wish they would have other combos other than chickens balls and fried rice, this gets old fast. I haven’t Ben there when they have the buffet.
Rod — Google review
The restaurant is showing its age. The food was hot and replenished often. The staff were friendly.
Valerie C — Google review
I don't think I have ever presented a 1 star rating on anything till tonight. What can I say about the Golden Phoenix? Well, I'll start with the price. For my wife, my 4 year old and I the price tax in was a $100 dollars. Now, normally if everything was exquisite I wouldn't complain to much of the price even tho a Chinese buffet charging that amount is a little outrageous! Especially the quality of food I experienced tonight. Evething I had was either burnt tasting, to salty (even for Chinese food) , or dry. With exception of the desert bar which I might say was quite tasty. But the main food... absolutely deplorable! The go to chicken Balls were dry and not made with the standard white chicken(turkey) chunks that I usually see. The noodles were burnt tasting, the fried shrimp were DOA, And would probably be considered dehydrated from being so over cooked. The place over all was dirty ,outdated, the service was non existent. Only once did someone come to our table which was to take the drink order and that's it. Not once did anyone come after so we were all still thirsty, and running out of room due to the stacks of dirty plates as we still needed to eat . So all in all I would not recommend the golden Phoenix as it's not At all a pleasant place for a family gathering. The glory days of this place are long gone and one could only hope that the owners can deliver the quality for the outrageous price.

Vegetarian restaurant
Gingergrass Thai and Vietnamese Restaurant, a recently established dining establishment in St. John's, offers an array of delectable Southeast Asian flavors. The eatery presents an impressive blend of spicy and sweet elements in its tom yum soup, accompanied by a necessary hint of sourness and saltiness for optimal taste. With the choice to have it served with chicken, tofu, or shrimp, this dish promises to provide warmth from head to toe.
Super experience, the servers were very friendly and their recommendations were spot on. The food was delicious, the tofu in the Thai Basil Noodles had just as much flavour and texture as the chicken in the Pad Thai.
Ian W — Google review
The past two times I've ordered pick-up have been very disappointing... I paid 110$ for the amount of food in the pictures below, the shrimp curry had 4-5 small shrimps in it, and was the size of a regular coffee mug and cost 23$. I understand the cost of groceries right now, but restaurants buy in bulk (I used to be a cook at multiple restraints and a sous chef where I was in charge of produce and protein orders), I understand restaurants are also struggling right now but I can't justify paying 23$ for 5 shrimp, and only one serving of rice (that cost extra 8$ per portion) that would only last one meal, and would not cover accompanying one dish. The food is super tasty but there are other local restaurants that have similar ingredients that do not charge this amount and the portions are accurate to what you would expect.
Gabrielle P — Google review
The Pad Thai is satisfactory but not outstanding. However, I am disappointed with the salad. The salad is just a bunch of cucumber, carrots, and slices. There are no other ingredients. All ordered items taste too much soury. It can not be a restaurant salad item.
Abdullah M — Google review
This was a first visit to Gingergrass. Its a casual, cheerful restaurant, small and cozy. The best seat in the house could be the swing for two! It and some fairy lights add a sense of whimsy to an otherwise plain decor. The service was great. Friendly and efficient, busy but in good humour. The food was good. Dishes tried include crab rangoon, veg thai spring rolls, crispy shrimp, cashew chicken curry, peanut (massaman) curry with tofu, with chicken and with shrimp. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal and the desserts of mango ice cream, fried Thai bananas with vanilla and chocolate ice cream. It's a good place to go with friends. Worth a stop for lunch or dinner. I would recommend a reservation, though.
Pamela J — Google review
The vermicelli was bland and not very flavourful. The pad thai was very sweet. Food was slightly expensive but overall OK.
Robert L — Google review
They welcomed us graciously even though we arrived without a reservation almost at their closing time. Caitlin and Jess were friendly staff who not only made recommendations for our vegetarian options but also guided us as knowledgeable tour guides. We ordered the group for 2, even though we were 3 of us, and it ended sufficient for our hungry appetite. Delicious food and good selection.
Krish R — Google review
The worst Vietnamese noodle bowl I've had anywhere, and an absolute insult that they charged over $20 for it. The veggies were placed at the bottom of the bowl so they were soggy and warm by the time I found them (very few veggies too, so what does it really matter how soggy they were). The tofu was so flavorless, clearly not marinated. I could make better tofu in 20 minutes at home. My partner commented that the veggies in her curry tasted and were textured like the frozen mixed bag you can get at any grocery store. Our meal took nearly an hour to come out because they gave our order to the table next to us, but it was another 20-30 minutes before they even realized their mistake. They remedied the mistake for that neighboring table, but didn't even acknowledge it to us. When we voiced our disappointment, we were completely dismissed.
Andrea G — Google review
We visited the place randomly on a Saturday evening seeing it's popularity and was told politely that they were fully booked and the wait could be 1 hour. We opted for takeout instead. The aroma in the dining area was really nice. The waitress who took our order was very sweet and apologetic, and our dishes were ready within 15 min. Prices were on the higher end but we thought that was the premium for being in the central location. Up till this point, everything seemed to be going towards the right direction. Then we opened our food. What on earth did the kitchen do? Tom yum soup - there were carrots in it. They added too much sugar and no galangal. We asked for the shrimp option and there were 3 shrimps in total. The soup was over $12 and came in a cup the size of one scoop of ice cream. Then there's the Mango tofu. It was supposed to be a fusion stir fry with pan fried tofu and sweet mango mixed in a savory sauce that's garlicky and gingery. Instead we got a bowl of non-curry, non-soup mixture of liquid and solid abomination that's sour, salty, combined with floating firm tofu cubes that were miraculously tasteless. It came in a container that could fit 3 Mary Brown's chicken strips and set us back over $20. We ordered a side of small steamed white rice which cost $4. I doubt the rice came out of a rice cooker because it was undercooked. In comparison, Thai Express serves gourmet food. I could not believe what I saw and what I tasted. How on earth would a place like this be fully booked? Even if this was a tourist trap, all tourists from other places on this planet would have known better. 5 star service and attitude, 1 star food. If I could give it 0 stars I would.

We loved our food and the service was great! We went just after 11am which was perfect as it did get busier just before 12.

Ordered chicken stir fried wrap and tomato avocado soup. Service was excellent. The teriyaki wrap was sub par. Soup was good . Overall the atmosphere is more geared towards senior population.

Ordered a double smash burger, got upsold on pork wonton that just felt really over priced for the serving size and execution. Ended up spending $50 w/ tip, not terribly impressed on the price point, burger was decent but overall felt over priced.

The Traditional Coffee House and Deli is a great place to get coffee, sandwiches, pastries, or anything else you may need for breakfast or lunch. The staff are very friendly and the food is always made fresh. I would highly recommend this cafe to anyone looking for a great place to eat.
It was our first visit and it was absolutely delicious! The turnip bacon soup was so flavourful and the turkey & dressing sandwich with cranberry mayo, the best I’ve had. I would definitely recommend to anyone. The staff were all lovely as well. My daughter really enjoyed her Sweet Chili Chicken Wrap with side Apple Salad too ❤️ l loved the selections of teas, and my husband enjoyed his coffee. Wish I lived closer to try more things. If you are in the area, definitely stop by. If you are not close by, it is worth the drive. Stop at Middle Cove beach after to make a great afternoon of it.

Whether you need great food to go or fresh hot meals to dine-in, this spot is a must visit especially for hungry hikers. I got the club sandwich and my wife got the ham and Swiss and both were delicious. The bread was superb (maybe from the Torbakery down the road?) And they really hit the spot. Service is amiable and prompt. I'd say we'd be back but we're from out of province 😭.

Good coffee with sandwiches, pastries, etc. I had an apple flip that was so fresh it was still a little warm. They appeared to be doing lots of takeout, but we ate inside where there were several tables. The place was clean and friendly and we had a great time.

Best sandwich ever!! Seriously. I'm obsessed with this turkey sandwich. I'm going to bring 4 of them home with me on the plane.

Went there on one of there musical Thursday nights just to make it special. Arrived early to have a great meal before the perfomance. And a great meal it was! I had the turkey clubhouse sandwich with a half order of the apple salad. The clubhouse was made with all REAL ingrediants. Thick slices of turkey, nicely crisp bacon, fresh tomato and lettuce on homemade bread. It doesn't get any better than that. The salad was all fresh ingredients (right time of year) with the owner's secret dressing which complimented the flavours perfectly.. She then surprised us with fresh homemade apple flips (not on the menu and still warm) with a local coffee blend that finished the meal in the best way possible. Settled back for some local entertainment presented by the Torbay Arts Council and that made the night. Worth while to go there anytime they're open, but Thursdays are a special time....always fun.

My family and I had a great experience here on our way back home after a hike. The staff were all very friendly - and the food is awesome! I ordered the turkey club with the cheddar and broccoli soup, with a partridgeberry tea biscuit. Everything was great! The club wrap had real shredded turkey (not that store bought cold-cut stuff) and was a great size! Soup: amazing. And the biscuit was fluffy and delicious. The best thing is that the prices here are INCREDIBLY good. Good luck finding a better meal for this price ANYWHERE. We'll be back!

Surprisingly delicious chinese food. Reasonable price and good enough portion. Not too sweet nor salty just enough seasoning. 5years eating chinese food this is one of the best in St. John's.

Ginger Beef was tough and chewy like it wasn't velveted. Beef and Broccoli was soggy and had no bite to it. Lots of better Chinese spots around town
Ryne M — Google review
Placed a small pickup order around 7pm, arrived about 10 minutes later and the food was ready to go. The food was hot and delicious as always, and the price is good for the serving sizes. I tend to stick to the same few dishes, but I don't think anything that I have tried has been bad yet. This is one of the few Chinese food places in the city I've found that I actually enjoy, and would recommend it to anyone. The only thing I can complain about is that they are closed on Sundays, so there has been a few times that I have wanted Chinese food only to realize they weren't open that day.
Ryan H — Google review
Great value, excellent service, I have often used for takeouts but never diuned in
Leonard C — Google review
This place is very cute, locally run and the staff are so friendly. The food was ok, though the egg rolls were not good (very strange, sweet flavor) and the general chicken wasn't right either. They did have a lovely carrot cake on the dessert cart that I really liked :) Not a bad lunch buffet for $16.
April M — Google review
ROTTEN BEEF!!! UNDERCOOKED PORK!!! The beef in the beef and broccoli was clearly ROTTEN covered in white slime! The pork was undercooked too fast, burnt on the outside raw on the inside. The only part of the meal that was edible was edible was the chicken balls, but i didn't finish them after I tasted the beef in case it was cross contaminated. The noodles also tasted bad. Like they had rancid or old burnt oil on them. Overall WORST Chinese food I've ever had. ROTTEN DISGUSTING food only fit for the trash! They will be getting a visit from the inspector.
Bjorn S — Google review
Some of my friends love this place. I however, don't. Been here twice. The buffet selection is 8-10 things MAX. I feel it's over priced for the items I like to eat. Spare ribs were bones or fatty, and the sauce was mostly water. Veggies were to crisp for my liking. There basically raw. I'm not impressed. Some people like it.... I don't know why. Good Luck
Justin M — Google review
The three things I look for in a restaurant are Egg rolls, fried rice and chowmein. Neither were good in my opinion. The other few items on the buffet were edible, but not great in my opinion. I appreciated those things that did have some flavour, General chicken and chicken balls and a sweet pork dish, but they didn't make up for the all you can eat. Wait staff was attentive and friendly.

Canton Restaurant, located off Torbay Road in St. John's, is a delightful spot for those craving authentic Chinese cuisine. Known for its rich and flavorful Hot and Sour soup, it offers generous portions that provide excellent value for your money. While the dining area has been closed since COVID-19 and could use some renovations to enhance the atmosphere, the take-out service remains popular among locals.
This place is a hidden gem in St. John’s. The server was polite and very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The food was fresh, delicious and piping hot!! They also served very generous portions. The best chop suey I have ever had. Will definitely go back.

If you finish what you ordered you are a fatty. It’s too much food. Jokes aside this is my favourite Chinese restaurant in the city now and trust me I have been to more than half the Chinese places around.
Ash — Google review
Plenty of Food, Little Flavour" Canton Restaurant serves up massive portions, but quantity doesn't always mean quality. For $60 (Dinner for two), we were stuffed, but the food left much to be desired. The Mongolian Beef and chicken dishes were overloaded with onions—where was the meat? The Sweet & Sour Pork was the only redeeming dish, but even that didn’t blow me away. The fried rice? Huge portion, but loaded with frozen veggies—hardly fresh. It felt like everything came straight from a mass-produced packet, lacking any signature flavour or originality. If you’re after a quick, filling meal and don’t mind that processed taste, sure, it’s fine. But if you’re someone who appreciates bold, fresh flavours, this place won’t impress. Service was excellent—our server was friendly, polite, and efficient. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was lacking. The restaurant could use a serious clean-up, and the torn seat covers and dim lighting didn’t do much for the vibe. Two stars for the food, five stars for service, and one star for the atmosphere. Go if you’re hungry and don’t mind the lack of authenticity. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
Jim M — Google review
For $10.25 I got a massive serving of food and it was delicious! Will definitely be back. Highly recommend!
Nic O — Google review
The worst Chinese food in town. I ordered the Mongolian beef, and it was 90% onions. I've had Mongolian beef many times before, but this was a major letdown. Other dishes, like the chicken chow mein, were also undercooked. Definitely won't be going back. See the picture of the item the call it Mongolian beef… it should be Mongolian onion..

Delicious! Some combo dishes are 10%-20% Better Priced here then at most other places in the city! Service is Awesome also. Dated interior but SERIOUSLY Authentic. Food is Always very fresh and tasty also. Always upgrade to the noodles!

Great place for getting Chinese food. We went for dinner while staying in St. John's after our cycling trip. We love Szechuan dishes. So disappointed in Kung Pau chicken. No dou ban flavour, no dark soy, no ginger, vinegar balanced with sweet. Sauce was watery. 2/10. Mongolian beef a bit better. Sauce had flavor, but beef was limp, not crispy. Could not taste hoison and sauce was quite watery. 4/10. Suggestions you consider classical use of corn starch in both recipes. Would never go back.
Gerry C — Google review
Really good food for the cost. I did call and ask the the platter .he say no platter. On the menu it says one person platter for 16.99 . Not sure what to think about this 🤔. I like the noodles more then the rice myself. Gives ya lots of sauce for them chicken balls too . I ate it all up cost me 20 bucks . I be coming back here for another feed maybe try the spicy stuff next time

The Kung Fu Chinese Restaurant offers a highly recommended dining experience. The spacious interior makes it ideal for large groups or casual weekday dinners. Additionally, their take-out service is convenient for those who prefer to enjoy their meal elsewhere. The restaurant stands out with its friendly staff, which adds to the appeal of returning again and again. Notably, Kung Fu impresses with its menu that provides great value in terms of portion sizes and affordable prices compared to other similar restaurants in town.
Very clean restaurant, friendly staff, food was ready within 10 to 15 minutes after ordering. Atmosphere feels high end with affordable pricing. I ordered #13 Dinner. Portions was large enough for two meals. Plenty of seating and parking available and they do dine in, take-out and delivery orders. Washroom was clean. Overall great experience!
Layne B — Google review
I ordered a sweet and sour combination platter that is supposed to come with chicken fried rice. When I received the order the rice had no chicken, no vegetables, no eggs. Nothing! It was basically rice fried in soy sauce. When I called the restaurant I was told that this is how the combination platters come. I told them there was not even chicken in the rice. I asked to speak to the owner and the owner refused to speak to me. I was told don’t order from them if I don’t like it and call UberEats. I got my money back that’s for sure. I was in shock. This is how you run your business?! Run from this place.

A huge shout out to Adrian and team, who went above and beyond for us yesterday! I placed a large take out order, dinner for 6 and as I have a bell pepper allergy, asked what dishes had bell peppers. Turns out they all did, but not to worry said Adrian, we can do your order separately they just needed a little extra time to make it! The meal was super yummy and I am so glad I could enjoy all of the assorted dishes. The portions were huge; we all walked away totally satisfied.

Balkan Kitchen is a family-run restaurant known for its delicious meat dishes and sweet desserts. The menu features Balkan Burger (pljeskavica) and cevapi, a Bosnian style of sausages that are described as even better than kebab or donair. The baklava is highly recommended, and the chef's wife experiments with various delectable desserts.
Great atmosphere and one of the kids plays a mean game of foosball. Made me want to watch football and learn BCMS. Delicious food and the bread they use for the sausage dish is as good as my late grandma's.

Perfection. If you love meat or sweet desserts, this is the only place in town to go. Have a Balkan Burger (pljeskavica), or my favourite the cevapi (Bosnian style of sausages, it's just the most delicious, spicy meat - if you love kebab or donair, you'll love cevapi WAY more. It will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. You will crave it!). The baklava is perfect. There are two chefs, husband and wife, the wife experiments with all kinds of delicious desserts. You can get baklava one day, and maybe some yogurt chocolate cake the next. IF there is dessert there, GET IT, even just to take it home. You won't get her creativity or that special OOMPH of taste anywhere else. It's my favourite restaurant in St. John's. And I've eaten at Raymond's.

Nestled on Old Placentia Road in Mount Pearl, Full House Restaurant has recently undergone significant renovations that enhance its inviting atmosphere. This cozy spot is perfect for those chilly days when a warm bowl of Hot and Sour Soup is just what you need. Whether you're dining in or opting for takeout, the service at Full House is impressively quick and attentive, ensuring your meal arrives promptly. The restaurant may have limited seating, but it maintains a peaceful vibe despite being popular for takeaway orders.
This restaurant has gone through some major renovations on the interior, and has really made it a more comforting and pleasant experience to dine-in. I always love ordering Full House takeout on stormy snow days. They are always available to take your order and quick to prepare it for pickup. Just recently, my friend and I decided to dine-in and we weren't disappointed at all. It is a very quiet restaurant with a great staff that go well beyond quality service. It would be great to see more vegetarian items on the menu, as I found what I could choose quite limited based on the few options they had. It was still very flavorful and hearty nonetheless! If you haven't been into the restaurant to dine, it is quite a relaxing and enjoyable experience from start to finish. The ambience is nice, the service is great, and it isn't too crowded since the dining room has been downsized.
Benjamin S — Google review
The service was excellent. The restaurant was very clean. Our mains were very enjoyable, but the chicken fried rice was very basic. Overall, it is excellent value and a good experience.
Gower B — Google review
They messed up our order slightly. No questions asked they sent the driver again to bring the missing pieces. He came with a smile and even brought us free wontons as a apology. Go on skip and see how they treat you vs this. Incredible service. Great job.
Daniel R — Google review
First visit here and service was quick. There isn't much seating area, and the restaurant seemed busier with the takeaway orders. That said our order was taken quickly and food arrived fast enough. Portions were average sized and meals were filling. The seating was comfortable but has the fast food atmosphere even with some Asian music playing.
Brian H — Google review
Would never recommend this to anyone!!@ got an 80 dollar order for 4 people and it tasted so bad that none of us could eat it. Worst aftertaste ever, like it was really old food or cooked in dirty oil. Called to request refund and manager didn't even recall. Only gave 1 star because the cashier was very nice.

Picked up a Dinner for 6 for a birthday celebration and it was great. It was hot and there was lots of food. Lots of different combinations to choose from as well. Rocket Bakery is a popular spot located in downtown on Water Street, offering a comfortable atmosphere and live traditional music during lunchtime. The bakery serves delicious food and a variety of pastries, including favorites like the chicken club wrap, sausage roll, BBQ pork roll, raspberry flakie, cheesecake, almond croissants, and cappuccino. Visitors can also enjoy excellent coffee and treats such as the Toasted Almond Croissant with lemon custard filling.

Shirley A — Google review
It has a spacious seating area with an eclectic variety of tables. I had a cappuccino and almond croissant and my friend had a cappuccino and flakey raspberry pastry. The cappuccinos were okay. My almond croissant was mostly a dry croissant with almost no almond filling - rather unusual for almond croissants. The flakey pastry was doughy on the bottom and not flakey on top. A rather expensive diversion at almost $25 with tip.
Frank S — Google review
Enjoyed the decor of the place. The funky older style works well with everything being served. I had tried their house coffee, and it was pretty nice. I had a blueberry scone, and it had a nice balance of crisp and soft textures. I only wished there were more blueberries. We were going to try a pumpkin flakey as pumpkin is my favourite. Unfortunately, they didn't change their sign, and it was another flavour :/ So I noticed the day olds and was told there was a pumpkin. So I bought them only to find out it was blueberry as well :/ So I had a few hiccups here and another not worth mentioning. Overall the food looks good, the atmosphere is excellent, and little issues can be overlooked. Give them a try; I’m sure you’ll enjoy them!

Rocket Bakery was always a must stop, on any visit to St. John’s or Mount Pearl. It is sad to see how much the quality and service has dropped off, even since our last visit in 2021. It took at least 20 minutes to get our coffee when there were barely any people in the store. They didn’t offer to warm up the cinnamon bun or scone, which used to be asked. Both tasted hard and dry which may have been improved by hearing them. The cold brew, when it finally arrived, tasted off, in that it was extremely bitter. My daughter had the breakfast sandwich on a biscuit, because they were out of the croissants by noon. She was pleased with it so I have it a try and it was tasty. My husband enjoyed his fish cakes and flakie as well. To top it off it was very hot inside so we moved to sit on the tables outside, just to have two employees come out for their smoke break and have to deal with the wind blowing the smoke directly into the faces of my family. Unfortunate, after all of these year to have to scratch Rocket Bakery off our “must do” list.

Restaurant
Bacalao Nouvelle Newfoundland Cuisine is a restaurant in St. John's that offers sustainable Newfoundland & Labrador cuisine and drinks in a cozy dining room adorned with local artwork and fireplaces. The menu features innovative presentations of familiar flavors, with a focus on locally-sourced seafood and game specials. One of their signature dishes is a modern take on the traditional Jiggs dinner, featuring salt beef, turnip, potato, and carrot rolled in a cabbage leaf.
I came for lunch on a Friday. Our server was friendly, attentive and just lovely. Our food came quickly, and it was absolutely delicious. The portion size was just right for lunch. Overall a great experience, I'll definitely be back again in the future.

Went with a large group. Staff didn't seem prepared to handle 18 people. Food to close to an hour to arrive. Portions were small, price wasn't! Dishes arrived with no plate appeal. Just meals no garnishing and folks that got meals first were done eating by time last plate arrived. Complaints of over salted was common. Establishment could use some decor and decorations that consist of more that painting hung on wall with for sale stickers along side... Overall not pleased with lunch menu choices. Though supposed to be inspired by worldly dishes it seems to be more Mediterranean sprinkled with local options. Expected better.

We enjoyed a wonderful meal. Gary the server was friendly and very helpful. This restaurant truly has a variety of Newfoundland dishes and the pan fried cod was as fresh as one could ask for. The restaurant could use a more extensive wine list.

Lovely atmosphere and fantastic food. Service wasn't the most attentive (some members of the party wanted more drinks but waitress never returned during our meal), and since the place was mostly empty this seemed a bit off putting. However, overall I generally enjoy visiting this restaurant and will certainly go again.

Atmosphere, clever menu, top notch service, creative bar. Have come here on business annually for past 3 years, experience always consistently positive. One of my top 5 fav restaurants in the world. Really! Put yourself in their hands and you will have a great meal experience.

After being in St John's now for ~6 weeks I must start leaving reviews because 4 & 5 starts are consistently handed out here to underwhelming restaurants. Bacalao is one of them. Went in early for Sunday brunch, table for 2. The good: place is cozy. My dish (George Street special) was fine but that's about it, nothing spectacular. The bad: Cappuccino was average (much better coffee can be found elsewhere in STJ). My GF ordered the omelette of the day and it was mediocre (and missing the mushrooms). We make much better omelettes at home! Finally, we had to wait ages for a waitress once we wanted to get the check. It was early and few tables occupied so no idea why the long wait. Lastly, almost $60 for 2 egg dishes and 2 coffees (including tip) seems overpriced considering the quality/taste. I suggest you go somewhere else for brunch.

Nestled in the heart of St. John's, The Rooms Café offers an unforgettable dining experience with breathtaking views of the historic harbor. This charming spot is perfect for enjoying a delightful array of dishes, from hearty soups and fresh salads to mouthwatering chef's specials and irresistible desserts. Whether you're indulging in their Avalon scramble or savoring a chicken sandwich paired with roasted mini potatoes, each bite is sure to impress.
The Rooms Cafe is always worth a visit for the food and great, friendly service, but when the sun shines on St. John's harbour, this place is magic. Your attention will be torn between your delicious food and the spectacular view. Today's choices included the Avalon scramble with cheesy scrambled eggs, thick bacon strips, roasted and smashed new potatoes, orange slices, and partridgeberry/apple jam with sourdough toast. Also tried the cod cakes with mustard pickles, grainy Dijon mustard, arugula and cucumber salad with cherry tomatoes in a creamy poppy seed dressing. I cannot honestly say the cod cakes were great. They resembled a seasoned potato and fish paste that was formed into a cake. Very little texture and no celebration of the amazing codfish. I would not recommend this dish, but everything else was fantastic, and I have never been disappointed at this restaurant on any of my many visits over the last 20 years. I've saved the best for last. TOUTONS! Yup, these scrumptious pillows of dough are fried to a golden brown and served with butter and molasses. Okay, you can have maple syrup if you're from the mainland, but when offered the choice of syrups, I could only look at the server with a raised eyebrow, suggesting there was no actual choice to be made. Molasses, and only molasses, if you want the authentic touton experience. Go for it.

Went for lunch. Staff were so welcoming and polite. Quick to clear/clean the table. The view was stunning & it was a beautiful sunny day which was a positive 👍🏼. Now to review the best part - food…we had chicken sandwich with roasted mini potatoes & cod tacos with side salad. YUM!!! Second to none, 10/10, amazing!!! Can’t recommend enough & can’t wait to return.

We went here for brunch before we went exploring in the Museum. Stunning view of Signal Hill and the harbour. Our server was great as well. I got a blueberry lemonade vodka and my fiancee got a Strawberry one, both very tasty. For food I ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich and absolutely loved it! Potatoes were cooked perfect as well and I loved the aioli that came with it. My Fiancé ordered the Falafel wrap, I tried it and thought it was good but she's not a big fan of cilantro and it didn't specify on the menu that there was cilantro in it, so she didn't love it but the creamy carrot soup was delicious. We would both love to return, especially so my fiancé can try something else! Highly recommend eating here before or after exploring the museum or even just coming here for the Cafe is worth it!

Great food, great ambiance, and very friendly staff. A very nice spot for breakfast or lunch! There are few vegetarian and vegan dishes, and they taste excellent. The desert was excellent as well 👌

Stopped in for lunch with friends. Really nice menu. A few vegetarian and one vegan option. Great portion sizes. I had the seafood stew which was hearty and very tasty. Staff were friendly and efficient. Food was well prepared and presented. Will visit again for sure.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Incredible Lunch With a View at The Rooms Café. During our visit to The Rooms art galleries and museum in St. John’s, Newfoundland, I had my heart set on trying a dish I’d seen in an online video from the 4th-floor Rooms Café. Our first attempt to get a table was unsuccessful — the wait was too long for our plans that day. We tried again the next day, but they don’t take reservations, so no luck. On our third try, we were greeted by a lovely staff member named Jackie, who truly made our experience memorable. She took my phone number and called us in less than 20 minutes to let us know a table was ready. We were seated by the window, and the view was absolutely breathtaking — sweeping sights of St. John’s Harbour and colourful Jellybean Row. Everywhere I looked, the food coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. I had the cod & scallop linguine, while my husband enjoyed a falafel wrap with lentil soup. Both dishes were fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. We couldn’t resist finishing with their sticky toffee pudding — it was the perfect ending. The café closes at 4 PM, so I recommend going for lunch, and be prepared to wait a little — it’s absolutely worth it. Special thanks to Jackie for her warm hospitality and for recommending a great local pub for fish and chips. If you’re visiting St. John’s, The Rooms Café is a must-try for lunch — incredible food, friendly service, and one of the best views in the city.
