When exploring the vibrant culinary scene of Oaxaca City, one must indulge in the delightful "Empanadas de amarillo, verde, y quesillo con flor de calabaza." These empanadas are a beloved street food that showcases the region's rich flavors. The Empanada de Amarillo stands out with its unique filling of shredded chicken and mole amarillo, all enveloped in a large corn tortilla.

Restaurant
Nestled in the lively Xochimilco neighborhood of Oaxaca, Ancestral Cocina Tradicional is a charming eatery that pays homage to authentic Oaxacan culinary practices. The restaurant prides itself on preserving time-honored cooking traditions, offering a menu that beautifully captures the rich and diverse flavors of the region.
Simply fabulous. The ambience was so lovely, beautiful garden setting. Wonderful gentleman playing the saxophone. Such a nice touch. Service was outstanding! A good explanation of the menus items. The foot was over the top. We ordered 3 different entrees and they were all delicious. The short ribs and molè sauce won!
Nada H — Google review
Had an excellent dinner at ancestral. I was craving some mole and this place came recommend. There’s several to choose from such a mole negro, yellow, and red. I asked my waiter which he recommend and ultimately went with the short rib with red mole. The red mole was delicious, I’m glad I got a side of tortillas to soak up the last of the mole. The short rib was cooked very well too. The roasted vegetables that came with the meat were delicious as well. It included carrots, corn, zucchini and cauliflower. The cauliflower was pretty bland but the rest of the vegetables were tasty. You must get the mole ice cream. Super unique and delicious. The dessert is served with a plantain and mole sauce as well as the ice cream. They serve complimentary tostadas, salsa and feta cheese. This was nothing special. The salsa was not very good and the feta cheese was an odd touch in my opinion. You can skip this is and save room for your entree and dessert.

This is the best food place in Oaxaca as far as I’m concerned! Of course, I have not tried all of them, but whatever we had here was completely extraordinary. Service was very good , and the atmosphere was relaxing and pleasant. Highly recommended for flavors that will blow your mind! To walk off all that deliciousness , check the nearby murals in the neighborhood after dinner.
Jelena P — Google review
We had a good experience here. The service was excellent and friendly. Drinks were good too. The food was good, though it wasn’t to my liking. I felt the mole lacked a bit of depth of flavor to it. Their famous tacos of shrimp and tripa are good but I really don’t like tripa so we didn’t enjoy that at all. We left it at that and didn’t want to try other dishes. If you’re not deeply familiar with Mexican cuisine these details will probably not bother you and you’ll probably have a good time and a great meal. I wouldn’t go back based on the two dishes we ate.
Sanel S — Google review
Such a peaceful restaurant! I came here around 2PM when it first opened and there was no one - very much felt like a private dining experience. I was alone so I was limited in how much I could order and I feel I still over ordered because I could not finish my main course. That said, everything was AMAZING! If you want slightly elevated traditional Oaxaca food - this is the spot. Definitely get the guacamole and cheese and the black mole with chicken. The guacamole came with this hot sauce that was honestly so good i wish i could have taken a whole bottle home. Divine!

Had a lovely evening here. The service was fantastic! So kind, and gave good recommendations. We had the short rib, the pork belly and the garnachas. All were very flavorful. The mole was wonderful. A great spot run but great people. Cheers from Canada!

Best meal of my oaxaca trip!!! Must order the caldo de piedra - shrimp was so sweet, fish and broth flavorful and light Ceviche was also great Short ribs with mole / good mole for a first timer! Ofrenda negroni also worth the try
Pinky L — Google review
I had the most incredible dining experience at this restaurant in Oaxaca. The tomato salad with quesillo was outstanding — fresh, full of flavor, and beautifully balanced with the creamy richness of the local cheese. Even more unforgettable was the mole with octopus. The mole was deep, complex, and perfectly seasoned, while the tender octopus made it truly unique and extraordinary. The atmosphere was authentic and welcoming, and the service attentive yet relaxed, making the entire evening feel special. This restaurant captures the very essence of Oaxacan cuisine — bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and dishes prepared with heart. If you’re looking for an authentic and memorable culinary experience in Oaxaca, this place is an absolute must 🙂

Takeout Restaurant
Catedral Restaurant is a refined dining establishment located near the main square in Oaxaca. The restaurant offers a sophisticated atmosphere with live piano music and a rustic inner courtyard. It serves a variety of Oaxacan and classic Mexican dishes, prepared with high-quality ingredients and presented thoughtfully. The colonial building housing the restaurant features beautiful decor and spacious seating, making it an excellent choice for senior travelers seeking a comfortable dining experience.
Absolutely stunning restaurant—easily our favourite so far on our Mexico trip. It has a true fine dining feel, with exceptional service (special thanks to Jose!), and a beautiful setting with a warm, elegant ambiance. The food was outstanding. We shared the Traditional Oaxacan Platter for two, which was packed with flavour—the tamales were the standout. For dessert, the six Artisan Oaxacan Sorbets were the perfect, refreshing way to end an unforgettable meal. We will for sure come again.

We were pleased to find ourselves downtown, enjoying the ambiance. The service provided was truly excellent, and we appreciated the attentive staff. Upon entering, we were greeted by the sound of live music and the sight of lush plants. It's certainly an enjoyable experience, especially since the staff is fluent in English. I would recommend making a reservation for convenience.

The food here was SO good! We stopped in a little after 5:30pm after an afternoon of wandering the beautiful Jalalatco neighborhood, absolutely famished. People kept stopping in front of the restaurant and taking photos, and we walked up and saw that it was because of the absolutely gorgeous Día de Muertos ofrenda. The interior of the restaurant was just lovely. We ordered our food immediately -- water, because it was a pretty warm day and we were getting dehydrated, as well as the 32 Ingredients Black Mole and the Almendrado Mole. Some bread was brought out for us. The little rolls with a creamy buttery soft cheese baked onto the top under the thin crust were my favorite. So good. The moles were lovely! My almond mole with roasted chicken had a mild, nearly imperceptible spice-- perfect for me. I wished the chicken had been boneless because it was hard to find all the little bones in there while it was swimming in mole. My partner's black mole was outstanding! I wished that was what I ordered, even though I enjoyed my meal too! It was a lovely meal, though service was a little spotty. They were running around and very busy. For the price, I had hoped for a tiny bit more attention, but it was within an acceptable limit. Definitely try this place, just be ready to wait a long while. :)
Danielle K — Google review
Beautiful place and very well prepared tasty dishes. We had two different moles, one black one and one family tradition. Both were really good, my fav is the traditional one
Arda O — Google review
I had my first taste of Oaxaca’s iconic black mole, mole negro, at Catedral, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. As a solo traveler, I was welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality by my server, Johnny, whose enthusiasm for sharing his favorite recommendations and the rich history of Oaxaca made me feel not just like a guest, but like a friend. The atmosphere is enchanting—romantic yet intimate—where even dining alone felt like a deliberate act of self-love. The rooftop opens up into a breathtaking atrium, the deep red walls radiating emotion, and the scents and flavors lingering in every bite. Each dish was a sensory journey, and the mole was a revelation—rich, complex, and deeply memorable. A surprising highlight? How they elevated a simple Topo Chico—served with fresh lemon and a salted rim, turning it into a refreshingly decadent treat. It’s the little touches that made this experience feel so special, like a gift from the city itself. I’d return in a heartbeat, and I’m forever grateful that a local pointed me in this direction. If you’re in Oaxaca, Catedral is a must—come hungry, leave with a full heart.
Kymberly F — Google review
The restaurant had a nice atmosphere and the food was great. I tried the chile en nogada, which was delicious. I also tried "nido de chapulines" which wasn't my thing, not because the they were grasshoppers, but because the sour seasoning made them kinda overwhelming, but as I later found out that's kind of how season them over there. The prices were reasonable, but my only complaint is that the brazilian lemonade was too expensive for what it was, especially for a mocktail. 190 pesos was too much for a relatively small lemonade frappe. There was a guy with a guitar playing some classic hits, which really added to the atmosphere. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.
Oscar G — Google review
I loved the ambiance of the restaurant. A beautiful red painted courtyard with a cute fountain. I had cheese omlette and a croissant. Both were ok. Hot chocolate was top.

Mercado Benito Juárez is a bustling covered marketplace in Oaxaca City, offering a wide array of goods and local products. It's known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings, including produce, prepared foods, crafts, textiles, and folkloric fabrics. Adjacent to it is Mercado 20 de Noviembre, where you can find artisanal items like hand-crafted huaraches and elaborately embroidered blouses.
You will find more than you expect inside this market. From clothes, food, pottery, artisan candy, mezcal, and even a pet store. You will find souvenirs for absolutely everyone here. There are two other markets around the same area. A must visit if you are in the area.

I was truly impressed by this market in Oaxaca City! It's a must-visit destination if you're in the area. I found a variety of souvenirs, hair and beauty products, delicious food, and drinks, and even bought new luggage for my trip. Highly recommended

Love it! If you are looking to buy mole paste to cook at home, this is the place. They also have a ton of artisan products like dresses, belts, and other things.
Denise E — Google review
Eating here is one of the best food experiences in the world! You walk into the meat hall, grab a basket, and choose your meat package based on the number of people in your group. Then they grill it for you while the lady selling salsas and nopales finds you a table. It’s a whole experience — loud, lively, and totally worth it. Be patient; everyone’s shouting, but it’s part of the charm, and you won’t regret eating here. There’s a lot of smoke inside, so consider asking for a table away from the grill area if that bothers you.

It’s okie. A little crowded. There are so much better places to go than this though

A wonderful local Oaxacan market. I purchased some fruit, veg, chicken and beef here. There are lots of stalls and shops that include everything you need at much better prices and quality than the commercial supermarkets. All of the stall owners were friendly and helpful, highly reccomend a visit here. They also have some textiles and souvenirs.

Nestled in the heart of Oaxaca, El Escapulario is a charming little Mexican café that offers an array of traditional and vegetarian dishes, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts. With its late hours and convenient takeout options, this cozy spot invites you to explore the rich flavors of Oaxacan cuisine. The menu features unique items like huitlacoche (corn smut) and mole negro, alongside adventurous choices such as chapulines (grasshoppers).
The restaurant is a modest setting like being in someone’s home for dinner, very cozy and we were lucky enough to sit by the window getting a great view. The staff were very friendly and very patient with us while we spoke broken Spanish. (Thank you!!) Finally, the food!! It was so good! One of the most authentic restaurants in Oaxaca! It’s so good that even locals were expecting us to have eaten there when we spoke with them! The menu even included traditional items like Chicatanus, which is seasonal (June-July) but a little tricker to find (at least it was for us) for those more adventurous!
Ben R — Google review
Went here to try manchamental and chichilo (both very hard to find), and it was incredible! The chichilo was duely somber, hearty, and mostly simple in flavor, with only very subtle complexity, and the vegitables and dough pieces complimented the tone of the dish brilliantly - enjoyable but not so pleasurable as to be inappropriate for a mourning family. The manchamantel was very lively, fruity, rich, bright, fun, and fairly spicy for a mole. And again, the other items in the dish complimented the mole brilliantly. The manchamantel is now my favorite of the 8 moles of Oaxaca, and the Chichilo is my significant other's favorite. The food was absolutely amazing, but do bear in mind, you will likely be waiting a while for your food. In my opinion though, it is well worth the wait! The decor is also fairly plain.

Absolutely loved our meal here! One of the best in Oaxaca and that's even comparing it to much fancier places with more accolades. Food tasted home made and the ambiance is casual, so the food took a while to come out, but worth it if you have time! Loved the Sopa de Conde and Mole Negro!
Nicholas P — Google review
Extremely good moles! Ordered the 5 sampler. Look at other reviews for types. Best traditional mole I’ve had yet! Big recommendation to come here. The combo also comes with drinks which is nice. It’s quite pricy though - see my menu photo. The 5 mole combo with rice and 2 beverages is 650MX. Worth it though!
Curtis Y — Google review
A quiet and sweet restaurant with some of the best moles I’ve ever had. The mole testing menu is a must try! My favorites were Coloradito, negro and rojo. The crema de chipolines is amazing. I loved the champurrado, the drink that I got which is a mix of corn and chocolate.
Maya B — Google review
Tried to go for dinner. They told us they were full. They told us to come back the next day around 2pm as a table wouldn't be a problem at that time.. We arrived shortly after 2pm the next day and they said come back in an hour. Then they never opened for lunch. Had to find another that offered the 7 mole sampler. Thankfully we found one.

Pretty packed market! Lots of amazing things to browse and purchase. I found the food stalls to be quite pushy in sales and will always be in your face! Just continue walking if you have this issue. Lots of tasty treats and don’t be afraid to ask for a try of something! Loved the spicy crickets personally.

A must-visit food market in Oaxaca — loud, chaotic, and full of amazing grilled meats. The famous “smoke hall” is packed with vendors grilling tasajo, cecina, and chorizo right in front of you. Everything smells incredible and tastes even better. Ordering a small plate of grilled cactus on the side is a fun local touch. Be prepared: it’s very crowded and seating is limited. Some vendors may guide you to a table but then require you to order drinks from them — a bit of a tourist trap. We were pushed into buying beverages we didn’t want. Something to watch out for.

El Quinque is a new and trendy burger and craft beer joint with a fun atmosphere. The restaurant offers a daily comida corrida for only 60 pesos, but the selection of the day tends to run out quickly. The place has simple checked tablecloths and black and white wall art. It's open until 10 pm, making it a great spot for late dinners. Visitors have enjoyed their portobello burger with roasted tomato and red peppers, along with house-made salsas.
A perfect "down home cooking" neighborhood restaurant. Had great food selections that delivered superior flavors. Had several veggie options as well as great fish dishes. Very affordable, we will return.

Had a marvelous Thanksgiving dinner here last week. The restaurant is very low-key but the food was very tasty. I wasn't sure what to expect as turkey isn't a common meal in Mexico, but the turkey was very tasty and tender. It was accompanied with masked potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, and stuffing, all very good. The meal itself came in different courses, with a chowder, rolls, and apple pie for dessert. It wasn't busy at all either. I'm very glad I chose this restaurant to spent my Thanksgiving, and would definitely return in the future to try their other menu items!

My friends and I have been searching for the best burger in Oaxaca and I refuse to believe there's one better than the Quinque (a bacon cheeseburger). Has the best bun; great fries; I asked for medium and that's how it came which is amazing for Oaxaca. I need to go back and try other menu items. Second visit. The arecherra steak is divine. Cooked exactly as asked for. Roasted zucchini and asparagus complemented it perfectly. Although it's not on the menu they have a pescado del día. You have to ask what it is. Today it was sole. Quinque is my new favorite restaurant in Oaxaca.

As the sun begins to set, make your way to Casa Crespo for an unforgettable happy hour experience. This charming rooftop bar offers a stunning view of downtown and the iconic Santo Domingo church, making it an ideal spot for sunset watching. Sip on their affordable mezcal or enjoy a refreshing beer while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere filled with rock, jazz, electro, and pop music.
Highly recommend hiring a private chef from Casa Crespo! It was THE BEST MEAL we ate in our whole time in Oaxaca. Filling and delicious. I wanted to lick the plate at each bite. Highly recommend!!! Willie was wonderful

Incredible cooking class. I have a gluten and dairy allergy which makes cooking classes difficult but this was perfect. The group sat down and we were able to choose from several options. Even still when the group chose something that had cheese, for example, the chef pulled out some for me and then added cheese for the rest of the group. Everyone was attentive to my allergies. And the food was delicious! I learned a lot about ingredients and meals in this region. Highly recommend.

A really enjoyable morning! We booked through viator but it’s probably worthwhile to just book from the place itself (less booking fees). It was about 3.5 hours long and cost roughly $1600 pesos. Overall i think it was worthwhile. Oscar was very efficient and organised. His staff were also very helpful. We met some really nice people on our tour as well and enjoyed the market where he explained different products. We cooked two types of mole (rojo and negro), ceviche, avocado soup, tortillas, chocolate ice cream and had a mojito as well. I recommend giving this place a go!

Highly recommend this cooking class if you're looking for one in Oaxaca. One of the best tamale and mole I've had during my whole trip to Mexico.
Lennie Y — Google review
Once in a lifetime experience for me. There were 8 others on the day I took the class. Oscar, the host speaks English well. He explained everything properly and was funny as well. We went to the market, bought local organic ingredients. Spent about 4.5 hours in total and the cost might keep changing but I would say it is totally worth it. Oscar can also accommodate the recipes if you are vegetarian/vegan. We made 4 types of salsas,3 types of tortillas, Tamales, Mole with Chicken, Soup, Ice cream and Al Pastor.
Veena S — Google review
Oscar and the rest of the workers at Casa Crespo gave me an amazing experience learning about the different foods and plants used in traditional Oaxacan meals. We did the full course meal class and got to choose our choices of appetizers, drinks, main course, and desert and then went to get ingredients from the local market. He really immersed us into the culture and taught us how to make all of the food and food included everyone in our group equally. Everything was organized perfectly, very clean, and delicious!!
Eryn W — Google review
My wife and I are so happy that we went to Oscar’s cooking class at Casa Crespo! It was are favorite experience in Oaxaca. It was a class of about 12 people. It started with all of us sitting around a table and discussing the possible menu and voting on what we wanted to eat and drink. Oscar was sure to ask if anyone had any food allergies and restrictions. He knows how to make dishes without cheese or fish or meat for those who can’t eat those things, and then still not affect the same dishes for those who do want to eat those items. After we made our decision, he led us on a walking tour to the market, stopping at 2 historic spots along the way to tell us the story of them. When we got to the market, I was so happy that Oscar told us we could not enter without a mask. I learned from a local doctor the day before that Oaxaca was absolutely decimated by COVID brought from tourists who continued to travel Willy Nilly throughout the height of the pandemic without precautions or care for the local community. You have to remember this is a community with a lot of indigenous roots so they have already been basically wiped out before by outsiders, we have to make sure we don’t do that again to these wonderful people. So yes of course we were more than glad to wear a mask inside the market because that’s the only sensible thing to do. While inside, Oscar described fruits and vegetables and meat at the various stands and the history of them in the region. He has very extensive knowledge of all of these things and we learned a lot. Then we walked back to Casa Crespo and started the cooking. He explained that he usually has class inside the kitchen but since there were so many of us we were going to do it outside. This was great for us since outdoors is safer for COVID purposes anyway and it was a beautiful weather day. Oscar was fantastic about getting everyone involved in the chopping, cutting, grinding, blending, heating, cooking, stirring, pouring, etc. It was a lot of fun. And when it was all complete, it was time to eat. Oscar had some wonderful people working with him that played and served the food we made. Everything was, of course, fantastic! After we left, we were happy and surprised to see that Oscar had emailed us the recipes for everything we cooked that day. How great! We recommend this experience to anyone traveling through Oaxaca!
Hans S — Google review
We had a private cooking class here and it was excellent. Oscar has a lot of knowledge and is very generous in sharing it. We enjoyed the fruits of our labour immensely - highly recommend this class. Can't wait to receive the recipes so I can attempt to recreate these tastes at home!

La Cosecha Organic Market is a charming courtyard market in Oaxaca City that offers a delightful array of organic and locally sourced products. It has quickly become a favorite spot for those looking to immerse themselves in Oaxaca's culinary traditions while supporting sustainability. The market features fresh fruits, vegetables, artisanal breads, cheeses, and coffees from local producers.
This market is a hidden gem within the city of Oaxaca. The atmosphere is very different than the larger markets. It is quiet and calm and out of the elements, but still outside. We were able to try a little bit from most stands there and I can honestly say every bite of food and sip of drink was delicious! Don’t hesitate to give it a try, you’ll probably want to return again and again.

Good Mercado in Oaxaca. Good Choice of food. I had a Falafel Bowl and a vegetarian omlette, horchata and tepache. All was delicious. For vegans and vegetarians perfect, the prices are good and fair aswell.

Attn: vegans! La Costañita is one of the food vendors at this market. We were in Oaxaca for a 10 day trip and ate here at least 5 times! The pumpkin/bean tamales and their guacamole is amazing. We also got an extra side of beans everytime to top off our tamales. These are some of the best tamales I’ve ever eaten, the owner is so sweet and their team has amazing service. I cannot recommend La Costañita enough and a visit to La Cosecha is a MUST! I also recommend trying Tejate at one of the other vendors here, and the Memelitas Veganas at another vendor (I can’t remember their names). The green juices are also amazing from the vendor in the back, we had a green juice with our tamales every meal as well. We ate here for less than $10 per person each meal. If you need to grocery shop here they also have produce vendors and organic products to cook wherever you’re staying.

Great place to buy local organic produce, eat and enjoy a delicious meal. Try to omelet de chayote, very good.
Janette R — Google review
What a lovely place. I made two trips and ordered from 4 stalls and all were top notch quality. The mole tamal, memelas, tejate and an agua fresca where all 5/5! The place is nice and quiet and the vendors aren’t hounding you. It’s an open market though they provide cover throughout. Cheaper than most sit down restaurants but only a little more expensive than the typical stall or cart in Oaxaca while knowing you are getting legit great food
Fred E — Google review
More of a gringo food court than a market. The enormous amount of aggressive flies made the space hard to enjoy. Not sure of the vendor we ate at but the tortillas tasted stale.
Doodle D — Google review
It's basically a food market such as what you find in a traditional market, but much more relaxing since there is no traffic or hecklers selling you stuff. Don't forget to leave a tip in the weaved baskets though if you think the service is good. Prices are very reasonable.

Santo Sabor Restaurante is a reliable and affordable dining spot in central Oaxaca, offering a variety of traditional and fusion dishes. The comida corrida is a popular choice, providing multiple entree options along with agua and dessert for around 60 pesos. Additionally, the restaurant offers a breakfast buffet until 1 pm at an attractive price for both adults and children. Customers have praised the delicious food, friendly service, and pleasant atmosphere of the restaurant.
Had a excellent meal here from the menu of the day. Came with drink, salad and dessert. Service was excellent. I would recommend!

Love this place. They always have decent comida corridas at a reasonable price that are thoughtfully prepared. They always have a selection of preset meals which come with sopa, main course. Drink and dessert. For a little more you can have specialty main course like fish. I had the tilapia al mojo de ajo which was delicious-4/4 star quality. Highly recommend!

Very good breakfast buffet. I have been coming here for four days in a row. I love fruits top with yogurt and cereals . Also scrambled eggs with vegetables, rice and more stir fry vegetable dishes. Plus variety of drink options. The price is so great US$4 for this all you can eat breakfast buffet . Highly recommend restaurant in central Oaxaca

Nothing fancy, just a set meal for $100 pesos. Includes 3 choices of starters (soup, salad or other), choice of about 4 mains (one vegetarian), unlimited fruit water, bread and a bite or two of dessert. The variety is great. Mains usually include something with beef, pork and chicken (plus the veg). I highly recommend the ensalada mixta-- a fresh healthy delight. There's also a breakfast buffet, but I've never tried it. The afternoon menu is posted on a board by the door if you want to review the offerings.

Nestled in the heart of Oaxaca, Casa Mook is a culinary treasure that showcases the rich flavors of Oaxacan cuisine. The menu highlights local staples like huitlacoche, purslane, and an array of herbs such as hoja santa and epazote, all beautifully incorporated into dishes like mole, tlayuda, and pozole. Diners rave about the friendly service and modern ambiance that strikes a perfect balance between trendy and inviting without breaking the bank.
We dined here for dinner and found the whole experience very enjoyable. The waiting staff were friendly and service was prompt. The only caveat to a five star was that we felt there needed to be some options for side dishes as the mains were just the protein but they were tasty and well cooked. The Resturant was modern and trendy without having exorbitant prices and the background music was cool and not too loud. The restrooms were clean as well. We would dine here again.

came here to try authentic oaxacan food, we ordered the rojo traditional pozoles and the two different chicken mole- both had a strange unfamiliar taste but grows on you the more you eat. The serving sizes where quite small, if we had known the serving sizes we wouldn’t have limited ourselves to just these dishes, would’ve been nice to have tried more dishes here, we also went for the maíz and the charcoal ice cream, highly recommend the charcoal ice cream! Delicious and creamy! Excellent service and atmosphere, very intimate, perfect for a date!
Gilbert S — Google review
We had an incredible meal here, thankfully mid week so we were able to walk in without a reservation; our server Aldrin was incredibly attentive, he gave us recommendations from the menu and recommendations for other local spots around Oaxaca and we swapped some local slang (we are visiting from Ireland). He also spoke excellent English which was far better than our broken Spanish which was a help! We picked out a few plates and shared everything which was a nice way to try more of the menu. We had the taco platter which was delicious, memelas, tetelas, chapulines quesadilla, and the black mole with beef. For desert we had the toasted tortilla ice cream. Everything was delicious and rich and very reasonably priced for the quality of the food. Would recommend to any visitors to Oaxaca!

What I find very disappointing are the reviews left by people here less than 5 stars I am a home chef from Montreal Canada and have been travelling to Mexico for the past 15+ years I am an ultra super foodie and really really love Mexican cuisine I find the level of food and the quality has improved immensely over the years and many amazing Mexican chefs have emerged and are now showing their craft Cooking is an art it’s not just about cutting up the food and igniting the flame pit and charbroiling the mammal flesh You have to put love into what you’re cooking and taste everything as you go You are building layers of flavour and sometimes cooking that dish for hours And when it’s finally done you just know it When people try what you have made for them their faces should light up and their eyes open up wide and smile…you can tell that your hard word has paid off Having said all the above…I was told by our waiter that the owner herself comes in daily and cooks up her secret batches of molé Well for what my wife and i experienced tonight at her restaurant showed us that she cooks with love We had the green molé pork and the black molé chicken served with a bowl of white rice Both dishes were nothing short of perfection Not too sweet not too spicy just the right consistency and trust me I know molé as I make my own using just 27 ingredients and it takes a day to prepare The tortillas that accompanied our meal came in a round basket and were served hot and super fresh My wife enjoyed her michelada with a Victoria beer and I enjoyed my cerveza too Our waiter was a young guy who was very polite and super attentive We shared the dishes to try them both and finished up every drop of molé in the serving dishes…the meals were delicious We finished off with tortilla ice cream and corn ice cream…both were super good We are only here for 3 days and already booked on tours for the next 2 but if we were not we would come back Restaurant owners work very hard to build up their bus which is their living and the workers they support and the suppliers they buy from…it makes our economy thrive! When people leave a negative review it can really hurt their business I think that if there are any issues during the meal they should be dealt with immediately and hopefully rectified by the staff We also found the decor beautiful and the textures just wonderful to look at as well as the local art work Thank you for having us tonight in your wonderful restaurant Muchisimas gracias We hope to see you again when we return back to Oaxaca

We loved Casa Mook: best quality/price in Oaxaca centre! The restaurant is beautiful, and the service was excellent! The food was so good and the price was great (not as expensive as many restaurants in Oaxaca). Highly recommend trying it out while you’re there. We went twice.

Great place that has nice ambiance and delicious food. I have an allergy to gluten and dairy. The menu isn’t marked, as usual for the area, but the waiter walked me through the menu and I still have tons of options. They complimentary totopos and salsas are a nice touch…the beans are especially delicious. We shared tacos and mole negro, both fantastic!

The restaurant is beautiful and the service was excellent! We’re so happy we decided to dine here on our first night in Oaxaca! We had the Mook ensalada, the pozole verde and the traditional mixe caldo. Everything was delicious and super fresh! Don’t forget dessert; The charred tortilla ice cream was amazing and so unique! The ambiance is very romantic and there is ton of local art on the walls. It almost feels like you’re dining in a modern art gallery. Very cool! Can’t wait to go back!

A straightforward restaurant serving tacos, quesadillas, tlayudas, and other staple dishes. I got the pork tacos and they were very good. The meat was tender and the salsa that accompanied it was delicious. Food comes pretty quick since the menu isn’t too large. Service was good and complimentary chips, salsa and beans are provided.

Situated a short distance from the city center, Los Muchitos Comida Vegana is a family-operated eatery in Oaxaca that offers affordable plant-based meals crafted with care. This casual establishment stands out for its unique feature: rooftop seating protected by a metal cover to shield patrons from rain and sun. Compared to other options in town, Los Muchitos provides wallet-friendly fare that draws in locals.
When visiting Oaxaca, one of our objectives was to find the best vegan mole, and wow did Los Muchitos deliver!! The flavor of the black mole is something I’ll never forget. We tried several of their dishes, and everything was spectacular! My husband is constantly craving their batidos de frutas. The staff is so friendly, and we really enjoyed the ambiance. We absolutely recommend!

Amazing food, sometimes a bit of a wait for food and drinks to arrive but there was only one person cooking so that makes sense. Delicious, well priced, lovely atmosphere with lots of plants. I had the menu of the day (soup, mains and a drink) for 95 pesos. My friends had the aztec soup, green spaghetti, and the pastor tostada - all amazing.
Isabelle C — Google review
I cannot tell you how much I love this place! Everything I have tried from the menu has been extremely tasty and such good value for money. Good portion sizes too, but I normally get 2 mains as I like to try as much of their menu as possible. I have not had 1 bad meal here. Also, the Oreo Frappuccino is a must try, it’s delicious. Nice area to sit, with lots of plants. The staff are very attentive and serve you quickly, they are also very kind. I will be sad to leave Oaxaca because this place is so great. For 110-120 pesos you can eat 2 mains and a drink, what more do you want? :)

The menu was so extensive we had a hard time choosing because everything sounded so good and indeed tasted great! The food was yummy, nutritious and homemade. I particularly liked the chickpea omelette which had nice tumeric taste. The Azteca soup was also full of flavor and super tasty. What a special discovery! I got off the bus and searched for something nearby and so glad I was just minutes from this place. What a unique location and great service all around! I was drawn to their choice of supplying ingredients directly from local organic farms. Quality ingredients make a huge difference-especially in some Mexican dishes. I was surprised at how humble the prices were for such a complete meal! You get a soup, main dish, dessert and a drink… (prices slightly vary but still under 200MXN!) I loved the atmosphere with the open patio and just off the busy street. Very sweet server/owner. So grateful to have found this place to start my stay in Oaxaca! Muchísimas gracias!

This is my second time here grabbing lunch. What a wonderful experience both times!! The incredibly sweet & kind owner serves a bustling restaurant with care for each guest. Food is very fresh, clean & simple. They also share a simple sweet to end the meal.
