Nestled on the picturesque island of Itsukushima, commonly known as Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site that captivates visitors with its stunning architecture and serene surroundings. This ancient Shinto shrine, dating back to the 6th century, appears to float gracefully on water during high tide thanks to its unique construction over the sea. The iconic torii gate adds to this enchanting illusion and serves as a symbol of Japan's rich cultural heritage.
Will require ferry to get to this place but it is truly worth it (moreover, the ferry is extremely affordable). Can be somewhat touristic but wouldn’t say it is extremely crowded. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here sitting by the coastal area and simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
Kenneth Y — Google review
Iconic shrine on the beach on Miyajima island. About 45 mins on the JR train from Hiroshima station. Can use your JR pass on the ferry to the island as well. There is 100 yen tax to pay prior to boarding the ferry. The red Tori gate appears to be floating in the water at high tide. There are free roaming deer in the vicinity. Beautiful scenery. Loads of restaurants, shops and cafes dotted around.
Merzesh M — Google review
Very crowded, but great shrine obviously. There are two ways to get here, we took the 10 minute boat to get to the island, and took the 45 minute ride to the Peace memorial. Note that the boats to the peace memorial are all indoors.
M. A — Google review
Our first time seeing a floating temple like this one ! Spent almost the entire day in this area! Fantastic view and wait for the high tide! Even met a lady from Washington! The deers were so cute and they love people! I’m so glad we had visited a spot like this!
Linlin C — Google review
This has To be one of our highlights from our 3weeks in Japan. It rained most of the day - which added To the atmosphere!! But then the sun came out!! A great place to be.
P ( — Google review
Unbelievably beautiful place. Plan to spend the entire day here. Wonderful shops and a ton of different food. Skip Nara and come here! The deer are way more friendly and less aggressive.
Pups P — Google review
u better come early, if you want to get to the gate closer, because after 9am sea water will flood its iconic gate ☺️, also the ferry before 11am is cheaper than after 11am
Enno W — Google review
Such an iconic site and focal point of Miyajima! It was certainly impressive in real life and the shrine itself was very unique in comparison to others we saw during our trip, given it's positioning on the water. We stayed at a Ryokan on the island and woke up at around 6:30-7am so that we could experience the shrine and Tori gate without masses of tourists, which was 100% worth it! We got some great photos and only saw about 5-10 other people there at that time in the morning ⛩️

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Nestled in a picturesque setting, Miyajima Public Aquarium is a charming and family-friendly destination. The aquarium's stunning Japanese-style architecture creates a serene atmosphere for visitors to enjoy interactive exhibits showcasing the diverse marine life of the Seto Inland Sea. From whale tanks and penguin pools to captivating sea lion shows, there's something for everyone to marvel at.
This was a great way to spend an afternoon when on Miyajima. The aquarium has many exhibits of aquatic wildlife, but their real shining feature is the interactive nature of the displays. Whether it is seeing the sea lions and penguins being fed, petting the penguins and otters, or having the tiny fish nibble your hands and feet, the aquarium does a great job in allowing you to experience the wildlife. Verbal explanations are only in Japanese, but the joy of seeing the animals perform or holding their little paws/flippers transcends language. Go to this aquarium.
Patrick K — Google review
I spent a better part of 2.5 hours here and took loads of pictures. I enjoyed every exhibit and moment that I was there. Definitely worth it and don’t forget to check out the live shows as well. Great for 1 person, small groups, families with kids doesn’t matter you’ll have a blast.
Sean S — Google review
This aquarium was really nice. I found it a relaxing environment and everything was well maintained. It was very quiet with minimal crowds, which I really appreciated. I would highly recommend a visit to this aquarium (children and/or adults). We visited the aquarium after Itsukushima shrine and Miyajima Ropeway. It was a really nice indoor stop!
Casey W — Google review
A delightful aquarium with many species of fish, crabs, rays, and some mammals! They have river otters, finless porpoises, and penguins. Lots of octopuses and jellyfish, too, that were quite active! Air conditioned, has toilets, has a cafe that we didn't use, and has a pretty decent gift shop! The feeding times for the different animals are announced in English and in Japanese numerous times before the feeding begins. Entry tickets are cash only!
Mariah M — Google review
If you have time, this is good for visit. However the aquarium doesn't big as others in Japan usually i took you only 30 mins to walk around all aquarium. But highlight on the several show every 30mins-1 hour. Like sea lion show, beluga or seal. The crew are nice good environments with AC in all the showing room.
BLUE B — Google review
A small to medium-sized aquarium, but with content that is richer than expected. The display areas are well-organized, and there is an ocean theater where visitors can interact with marine life. It's a great place for families to visit. The image is of a baby long-legged crab.
Chan D — Google review
Learn about oyster farming and the diverse marine life of the Seto Inland Sea. We really enjoyed this aquarium and recommend it to anyone curious about the local aquatic fauna. It’s not very large, but it features opem enclores, interactive exhibits and outdoor areas. During our visit, there was also a temporary exhibition on land and water insects, also with open enclosure, very interesting!
Kary A — Google review
Well worth the small admission fee for an out of the beaten path aquarium. Plenty of little shows and some interacti ve exhibits. Even has a small café and is comfortably climate controlled.

Business park
Miyajima Omotesandō Shopping Street, also known as Kiyomori Street, is a bustling arcade lined with souvenir shops and street-food stalls near Itsukushima Shrine. This lively spot offers traditional Miyajima handicrafts, torii-shaped keychains, and the world's largest rice scoop. Visitors can sample local delicacies like grilled oysters and nigiri ten while exploring the variety of shops and attractions.
A must see on Miyajima island. Such a great street with lots of cute shops, restaurants, souvenir shops, snacks, etc. Most shops only open around 11AM so check before you go. This is a good spot around lunch, do note it gets really really busy and crowded. There were some deers walking around the streets which was funny. Do watch out for your food getting stolen by a deer they can get aggressive. Allocate about an hour to walk this street area and stop at local shops. Most of this street is covered so a great spot to go in the case it rains! No ticket purchase required.
Shawn — Google review
A really authentic and lively area (the shopping area). Yet, peace and quiet on the seawall next to the beach are only a short walk away. This is a really special island with just the right level of development - not too modern yet built up enough to feel special. A 100% must visit if visiting the area.
Lance T — Google review
Fun place to shop around, lots of snacks and drinks options so please make sure to bring an empty stomach. There's tourist information center with super clean & modern toilets & big trash bins (which is a gem if you travel Japan haha). You should try oysters, a local signature food of the area.
Linh T — Google review
If you are around Hiroshima, Miyajima is only an hour by train and ferry away. It shows you a genuine Japanese island lifestyle. It's offerings from eel rice set, craft beer, grilled oysters, sweets; etc. It never disappoints!
Joaquim V — Google review
What a great place to visit for a day & night - last ferry goes around 11pm and the tourists mostly leave after sunset Lots of restaurants cafes and shops to explore - this island is so traditional and well worth a visit Watch out for the locals …wild deer that roam the streets ….they really do eat anything including people’s maps and paper bags Great adventure well worth the visit
Sandy C — Google review
While this street offered several shops with different sweets and other treats and looked beautiful overall, it was quite crowded. Also the food options seemed quite limited to local tourist options (such as oysters). We enjoyed the street parallel to it (machiya street) more. It offered unique shops and cafes, just not as many.
Melanie — Google review
Wonderful place to take a stroll. The delicious local cuisine - the flavored beancakes, Octopus and shrimp rolls, butter grilled oysters - were incredible. The souvenirs were cheaper compared to Osaka and Kyoto. The handworked chopsticks make a lovely example.
Eber S — Google review
Food haven and various souvenir store. Try out different oyster dishes, traditional japanese foods and the famous hiroshima lemon gin.

Daishoin is a significant Buddhist temple complex located at the base of Mount Misen on Miyajima. Established in the 12th century, it features various halls and carved stone images, including the Kannon-do and Maniden halls. The temple is just a short walk from Itsukushima Shrine and offers daily access to visitors.
I must confess, this was one of my favorite place to visit. It offers a lot and it is free entrance. Let’s start: 1. The entrance start with some rocky stairs surrounded by a very beautiful nature. Every step allows you to see like small shrine, some small statues where the people left coins and the main entrance of the temple. 2. Just before the main entrance, you can ring a bell (for free, we did the same in Kyoto and we paid like ¥200/$1.40 aprox) 3. The entrance, before going into the stairs, were protected by 2 statues that are pretty nice. 4. Inside you will see like shrines or temple (sorry my ignorance, do your homework to avoid this type of confusions) mixed by a lot of nature. 5. My fav vid from today is one that the temple is surrounded by a fog, it is not always on, you will have to wait for the correct moment. Because I do not know how to express with the corrects words what I witness, I will give you my pics and vids Disclosure: Every time I read that photos and vids were not allowed I obeyed, DO the same. There are some people who believe they are geniuses because the got the vid, they are not…

I honestly loved this place! The temples are absolutely stunning—peaceful, beautifully preserved, and full of history. There’s such a rich sense of culture everywhere you look, from the intricate statues to the sacred rituals happening quietly in the background. It’s a spiritual and serene experience that really stays with you. Definitely one of the most meaningful stops on my trip to Japan!
SJMG15 S — Google review
Beautiful Buddhist temple, 100% worth the stairs! It is built on the mountain where you can have a great view of the town and sea. It's so great to walk around the garden, next to a clear beautiful stream. The 500 rakans with red beanies are interesting to look at. There's a temple stamp that you can collect as well. You can spend 1 to 2 hours here.
Linh T — Google review
This temple was really awesome. It has a little of everything and in a beautiful setting. There are a lot of stairs though so be prepared for that. One of the temples blows a bunch of mist out of the bottom that makes for a very cool picture. I wasn't expecting it so I didn't get a very good shot. There is also an underground path in one of the temples that is completely dark and you have to navigate with your hands on walls. I think it is supposed to represent rebirth or something.
Brett B — Google review
Beautiful temple with many well kept statues. You should hit the bell (it’s a way to get rid of bad desires in Buddhism according to the guide who went with me) and also go through the dark tunnel (it’s ok, the floor is even, there’s no risk of tripping, and the corridor is rather short). There are some steps but totally doable.
André M — Google review
An absolutely beautiful shrine on Miayajima / Itsukushima Island. Would recommend going early to avoid crowds that begin around 9 am. Be sure to wear socks as you need to remove your shoes to enter one of the buildings on site.
Sarah — Google review
One of the best temples we visited yet! So unique due to its location up at the base of Mt. Misen. We loved all the red hat Rakan, the beautiful Henjokutsu Cave and how everything seemed to blend beautifully into nature.
Jennifer M — Google review
This was my favorite temple during my trip. So many things to see inside, make sure you walk all the way up, take a look to the waterfall, walk all the mini temples, small buddhas with hats. This was the highlight of my visit to Mijayima

Hokokujinja Senjokaku Pavilion, also known as the "1000 tatami mat pavilion," is a large wooden hall dating back to the Momoyama period. Commissioned by samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi, this shrine overlooks the sea and was intended to honor fallen soldiers. Despite being left unfinished for over 400 years following Hideyoshi's death, the pavilion exudes a mystical atmosphere with its sparse interior adorned with numerous paintings.
There's a slight climb to the pavilion and you need to pay to enter. They will give you a bag to put your shoes in as no shoes are to be worn inside. The floor was very cold since I visited in February. If you don't have thick socks, it might become difficult to walk inside during winter months.
Bhanuka S — Google review
When we made our plans to the island we didn't know or plan to visit here but I am so glad we stumbled upon it. The shrine was beyond cool to me. It was open and you could walk freely around under the huge timbers of the roof and columns. Originally built in the 16th century it is a sight to see. And one of the best things, very few tourists.
David B — Google review
Beautiful shrine with a big pagoda, overlooking the scenery from a small hill next to the main shrine and the big Tori. The wooden hall is stunning with enormous pillars. We were there on a very hot day and enjoyed a break sitting on the wooden deck with a nice sea breeze. I was surprised that it was nearly completely empty. Entry fee is 100 ¥. So absolutely worth it to relax there for a while.
Ralf B — Google review
Senjokaku Pavilion at Hokokujinja Shrine sits atop of a hill. The Hall of One Thousand Tatami Mats (there are actually 857 mats) is the largest wooden structure on Miyajima Island. There is a small entry fee to enter the large pavilion. Highlights include beautiful art hanging across beams and views of the bay and shrine below.
Zeph — Google review
We only walked around the surrounding area, but it is well-preserved and has a beautiful pavilion. You can see a nice view of the Miyajimaguchi ferry station and surroundings from this point.
Alexis Y — Google review
So incredibly peaceful. I easily could have spent all day here! It was only 100 yen to enter! There was also a spot where you could get your fortune!
Shannon M — Google review
Very beautiful shrine with a Buddhist pavilion next to it. The entry cost is cheap at ¥100, and it offers beautiful views of the mountains, town, and sea. It also contained a surprising amount of artwork in the ceilings.
Nathan F — Google review
The overlook up here is quite beautiful. The Pavilion has a 100 yen admission fee (adults) and no shoes allowed inside. The building is very clean and well maintained, within a quiet place on top of a hill. There are multiple ways to get up here but they are all via stairs. So I do not recommend it for handicapped or seniors with difficulty walking. But the overlook is worth the visit, as you can see the Tori gate, and the entire town from here!

Momijidani Park is a serene and picturesque park filled with hundreds of maple trees, making it a popular spot to witness the stunning fall foliage. The park is also home to monkeys and deer that roam freely, allowing visitors to observe them up close. Nearby attractions include the historic Buddhist temple structures near Mount Misen's summit, such as Misen Hondo and Reikado.
This park has a great vibe where you feel like explore and experience the nature. I went during the fall so it was all red. It has nice waterfalls and you have to cross this in order to get to the ropeway to Mt Misen. Overal it was a lovely experience to be here. I also encountered a couple of friendly 🦌 at this park.

I also visited the stunning Momijidani Park, which is renowned for its beautiful natural scenery and the famous Momijidani Bridge. The park is a picturesque haven, especially in autumn when the maple trees turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. The Momijidani Bridge is a highlight, gracefully arching over a serene stream and surrounded by lush foliage. Walking through the park, I was captivated by the tranquil ambiance and the exquisite blend of natural beauty and traditional Japanese landscaping. The peaceful pathways and the sound of flowing water made it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll and reflection.
João L — Google review
Beautiful maple leaf valley park is stunning at any time of year. Wander through the beautifully maintained paths under gorgeous trees beautiful at any time of year. Beautiful stream running through. A popular route up to Mt.Misen that takes anywhere from 1-2 hours of stair climbing. Wild deer are in the park. Interesting small shrines and tea shops offering light meals too. Picnic areas, public toilets here but no water fountains to refill water bottles needs to be reconsidered especially in hot months. A water bottle refill station at a few areas would help reduce waste and improve health as well as comfort of visitors and hikers.

Beautiful park with a river running through it, it was flowing quite well while we were here, its very beautiful. There are deer roaming around too, they are not scared of people and will walk right up to you! There are heaps of picnic tables as well. It's a nice walk through the park to the ropeway station.

History museum
The Miyajima History and Folklore Museum is a collection of historic buildings showcasing cultural artifacts such as rickshaws and vintage pottery. With about 1,000 artifacts and documents on display, the museum offers insights into the history and culture of Miyajima, including exhibits on historical figures like Taira no Kiyomori. The museum also features Japanese gardens, providing visitors with a glimpse into traditional Japan.
This museum is a jewel in the island a Must to visit. It looks like a simple beautiful classic japanese house from the outside, on the inside it begins like a modest place showing some history and instruments used on the island. Then it has a second floor with more history like a normal museum but what bring this place on top of most places is that it provides you the chance to go inside the house and seat in the living room, try to do some Japanese Origami, heard the little fountain on the garden of the house and feel what could have been living in a place like that on the old days, absolutely gorgeous. I highly recommend to visit this place.

Loved this place! The gardens were stunning and the local history was so interesting & well displayed. They advised it takes 30m to 1hr to see all of it, but we ended up spending 1hr 20, honestly could've gone longer but we got too hungry!

Very good history of the island. Beautiful garden. Opportunity to fold your own origami crane. I thoroughly enjoyed this museum.

A great place to learn about the Itsukushima shrine: it provides many more explanations than at the shrine itself. It has lots of interesting pieces to show, about the shrine, its history and the customs of the local people. It is located in a former merchant house with a very nice garden. It is cheap for all it offers and there was virtually nobody there whereas the shrine was very crowded.
Phil A — Google review
So much fun information here, as well as a preserved house. Lots of the information was in English or there were English subtitles, so I could easily understand. Beautiful art as well! Very glad we visited.

It is worth to see inside. Photo were not allow for building A, B,C, and D. Some area, we must take off our shoes. We have to follow the direction arrow for viewing. We can see many old stuffs which were used in old time. The traditional house in Miyajima also display.

It is said to be a former national shrine and the main guardian deity of Aki Province. The approach begins with a large stone torii gate, and eventually passes through a very impressive tower gate. Entering the sacred fence through the upper shrine gate, a large shrine building appears within the spacious grounds, each one impressively well-constructed. I muttered to myself, "It's a national shrine from before the war, isn't it?" The shrine's bookmark, given to me when I requested a goshuin, tells me that the mid-Heian period Engishiki Shinmeicho (the Engishiki Shinmeicho) lists it as a Kanpei Taisha (Great Shrine). No wonder it's so impressive! Incidentally, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, my birthplace, is also a former national shrine. It was well worth the trip from the Shinkansen to the Sanyo Main Line. I was deeply grateful for the wonderful visit.

Museums
Umi-Mori Art Museum is a charming and relatively small museum located atop a small mountain. The museum features exhibitions on Japanese culture as well as global topics. Visitors can enjoy a ride up to the museum from the restaurant located below, and are encouraged to take in the breathtaking views from the balcony area while sipping on tea. The building itself is eye-catching, and while only two of its five floors house art exhibits, visitors can still appreciate beautiful artwork and stunning views from the terrace.
Wow, what an amazing view from Miyajima. I was originally disappointed with the lackluster view but the Honshu Scientology HQ really pulled it all together. The brutalist dictatorship architecture was stunning against a dull green mountain.

It could have been a great view to this museum from miyajima if it wasn’t for the tori gate.. but well I still give it 4*
Mário S — Google review
At first I thought this hideous thing to be a mosque. Then I realized Japan would never let that happen, so I asked Google. It really does ruin an otherwise great view.
Felix K — Google review
Built directly behind the Itsukushima torii gate, purposely ruining the view from Miyajima. It's also am insanely ugly building, shame on whoever designed it and approved the building plans.
Krisztina K — Google review
It's a very nice museum. It is not too big and has small Exhibitions about Japanese culture and/or a specific world wide topic. It is on top of a small mountain, therefore, it is advised to ask the restaurant (which you should definitely visit) if they could give a ride up there. They are always happy to help out. Besides, in the museum is a balcony area where you can enjoy a cup of tea. I'm sure if there wouldn't be Corona, they would offer more.. But the view is breathtaking taking and I would have liked to stay all day long.

I came to Itsukushima Island, the sacred island of the gods, expecting spiritual enlightenment, ocean breeze, floating torii gates, and maybe a deer side-eyeing me for snacks. But instead, what did I find? A massive white space palace of an art museum that looks like it crash-landed here from Elon Musk’s garage.
Heath B — Google review
A beautiful scenery: a shrine in the sea, a pagoda to the right, lots of nature, mountains.... But then you notice a strange white thing out of the corner of your eye. You look to the left, a humongous building that is really good at what it does, destroying the whole scenery. It looks like the incarnation of a villain in the form of a building, disrupting peaceful moments. It won't take you long to find it in the attachment.

Mountain cable car
Kayatani Station is a stop on the Miyajima Ropeway, an aerial cable car system that takes passengers up to the summit of Mount Misen on Miyajima Island. The journey from Kayatani Station to Shishiiwa Station offers breathtaking views of the lush forest landscape and the Seto Inland Sea.
Wonderful experience! This was a super fun adventure lasting about 1–2 hours. First, you take a smaller gondola (seats about six people, ride takes around 10 minutes), then transfer to a larger standing gondola (fits around 20 people, ride takes about 6 minutes). At the top, you’ll arrive at a 360-degree viewing platform with stunning panoramic views. Be sure to go on a clear day—visibility makes all the difference. Tickets are purchased from a machine at the entrance. It’s easy to figure out, but make sure to select a round-trip ticket. It was 1,000 yen per person for the round trip. Although the setup clearly prepares for long lines, we went on a weekday around 10 AM and were finished by 11 AM. It wasn’t crowded at all—just a short 10-minute wait for each gondola, and no wait at all on the return trip. That said, it can definitely get busy, so go early to beat the crowds! You can also hike to nearby shrines if you’re up for it, but we chose to skip the hike and explore elsewhere instead. There is a restroom at the top—highly recommend using it, as bathrooms on the island are limited and hard to find. A great outing for families! The gondolas felt safe and secure. They are a bit older but seem well maintained.

The Miyajima Ropeway is a must-do — the views are just breathtaking. We waited about an hour to board, but it was completely worth it once we were up in the air. The scenery is incredible, with sweeping views of the islands, the city, and even the oyster farms in the water below. We chose the return ticket, and I’m so glad we did. The ride back down was just as beautiful, and after a long day of walking, it was a relief not to tackle the hour-plus hike down. If you’ve got sore feet or just want to soak in the scenery again, I highly recommend getting the round-trip ticket. A truly memorable experience — peaceful, scenic, and unforgettable.

This is a beautiful hike to the to of the island with great panoramic views. Go as early as possible. We went on the first ferry and went straight to the ropeway and there was already a line. When we came back down the line was probably a 2 hour line. It's not the end of the world if you didn't make it but it is beautiful. I'd actually do the hike if the line was too long.
Brett B — Google review
Nice views and well operated. Be sure to go earlier in the day. They won't tell you you're going up too late to enjoy the hikes and views for long before they shut it down at 4:30 pm.
Scott H — Google review
If you are planning on taking the ropeway, I strongly recommend to do it early. The rope way opens at 9am, we arrived at 9:30 and there was no one. We got up in few minutes and could enjoy a great hike up to Mt. Misen summit. We got down at 11:30 and waited 5 minutes to get into the cable car due to the line. When we got back to the starting point the line to get in was extremely long with up to 1hr wait. For this reason I recommend going early if you want to skip the lines and crowds. I strongly recommend taking the ropeway for the amazing views you’ll get even without hiking the mountain.
Giulia B — Google review
Nice ride, probably the longest ropeway I've been on so far. The views on top are spectacular. The ride is done in two segments, first sitting in a small 6 person gondola, then another larger one where you stand. We went pretty late and the queue for the ride down right before closing was huge, so bear that in mind. You can walk down but I definitely recommend doing that while it's still daylight, and not waiting till they close the ropeway.
Agata P — Google review
Great experience. Beautiful scenery. Well organized. I took the ropeway up and then hiked the rest of the way to the summit and then walked down the 2,000 steps. Highly recommended.

Awesome views on Mount Misen. I love hiking so loved going up the trail myself. However pick your time wisely lots of tourists and u dont wanna miss the last cable cart back (1630) then u need to hike down.
