National park
Nature & Parks
Acadia National Park is a 47,000-acre natural wonderland located on the DownEast Maine coast. It boasts a diverse landscape of woodland, granite peaks, and rocky shores where mountains meet the sea. As the first national park east of the Mississippi River, Acadia offers camping, hiking, and more for outdoor enthusiasts. The park's pink granite formations, pine forests, fields, and sandy beaches were generously given to the public by private landowners who wanted to preserve its beauty.
Beautiful park. Tremendous views and lots of over looks. If you like beaches Sandy Beach is awesome. Otter point has some great views. There are moles of hiking trails and I would love to walk on but unfortunately we were here only for a day.
John D — Google review
A friend and I took the Gorge Trail / Cadillac North trail and it took us 4.26 hours for a 5.4 mile hike. The gorge trail takes you to the Cadillac mountain summit. It is a serious hike that includes rock climbing. We then took the Cadillac trail north back down. We are 51/47 year old women. Be ready. It’s a work out. Have your knees ready. It is Beautful. All of it. Worth the hike. The reward is amazing.
Amanda C — Google review
Definitely a nice entry-level park to visit. Came here in October when the weather was cooler, definitely gave some beautiful fall vibes with the changing foliage and crisp air. The park isn't as big as other National Parks but it still offers a lot of great trails and sights. Cadillac Mountain tickets are required to check out the sunrise and for any other time for access. Neighboring Bar Harbour has a great town with plenty of food, bars, and lobster!
Thomas M — Google review
So the thing about Acadia is, it’s one of the best parks, but unfortunately, ever since the Covid lockdowns let up it’s been getting busier and busier. When we started going around 15 years ago, I would say there was maybe half the amount of people who go now. And now on a bad day, you can have a hard time finding a park for the better trailhead. But the park is beautiful, the Rangers are great, And it really does have everything you could want. Spend some time in the surrounding area and you’ll avoid some of the crowds now, Southwest Harbor is one of our favorites.
Colin C — Google review
It's a beautiful place, we did the scenic loop and made a few stops. The beach is huge boulders in most places. There are lots of hiking trails and we did several in our first visit in 1971. That was our honeymoon and we were camping, this time we stayed in a nice hotel. Beautiful fall colors.
Michael R — Google review
Beautiful national park. Clean!!! Beaches are beautiful. Hiking is fun with enough variety for most to find something they can enjoy. Campgrounds well maintained. Only negative is the lack of showers at the campground. We stayed at Seawall on the quiet side of the island. Strongly encourage buying a map of the park to help find the trails but things are well marked. Plenty of places to enjoy the sunsets and sunrises.

5/5 ★★★★★ A Must-Visit in the Fall! Acadia is an absolutely stunning park that left us with incredible memories. We specifically planned our trip for the autumn, and we did not regret it for a second. The landscapes were unreal—the foliage was ablaze with every shade of yellow, orange, and red. Hiking through the woodlands and along the rocky shores felt like walking through a fairytale, with a multitude of bright colors everywhere. One crucial piece of advice: be sure to bring a warm windbreaker and a HAT! It is incredibly windy on the peaks and by the ocean; it would have been much less comfortable without one. An interesting note: due to the government shutdown, there was no one at the entrance station, so no one asked for our tickets or our "America the Beautiful" annual pass, which we had ready. Of course, we fully support the parks and are always happy to pay the entrance fee to help maintain these beautiful places. We highly, highly recommend Acadia to everyone, especially in the autumn months! It's a place of power and incredible natural beauty.
DESMONT — Google review
This is a gorgeous park and still one of our favorites (2nd time visiting, 1st national park for us 14 years ago). We spent 4 days visiting the week after the 4th of July. And we still didn't have time for everything we wanted to do! The park loop road had some beautiful views. Jordan Pond had a moody feel when we walked those trails. The rock at South Bubble was fun to see and we got some great pictures of us with it, too. Popovers at Jordan Pond were delicious. We stopped by on a Tuesday night after the dinner rush and there were plenty of tables available and parking was easy. The hubby did Beehive himself. Great experience for him and the views were gorgeous. Definitely more challenging and not for everyone. We visited the Carroll Homestead and spent 1 day driving out to the Schoodic Peninsula. The visitor center there is beautiful and has some interesting history of its own. We walked a few trails on that side and drove that loop road - note that it's 1 way for much of it. I also recommend checking out their activities. We spent a few hrs one night on the beach with a ranger for a program watching the sun set. (Unfortunately no stars were out, but it was still cool.) So much to do in the park and mote outside too as well as lots of delicious food.

The Abbe Museum is a modern institution that offers a deep dive into the culture of the native Wabanaki people through various exhibits and events. Located on Mount Desert Island, it is one of the anchor attractions in Bar Harbor, bustling with activity and offering plentiful lodging and dining options. As a Smithsonian affiliate, the museum provides an opportunity to learn about Maine's Native American culture, art, and history. The museum's affiliation with the Smithsonian ensures high-quality displays and educational experiences for visitors.
We really enjoyed this museum. I had read about it in the book, The Orphan Train, and since we were going to be in Bar Harbor, I thought it would be an interesting place to visit and learn about the indigenous people. The museum is only a couple of floors but it is jam packed with information.
Lina H — Google review
Very well done exhibits combining history culture and art. Even the local art from children was amazing.
Charles I — Google review
Very nice museum showcasing the areas native tribes. Works ethically with the tribes to repatriate artifacts. There is an active archaeology lab in the building that you can view.
Matthew T — Google review
This is a must-see if you are in Bar Harbor. My husband and I spent about an hour and a half exploring the exhibits, learning about the Wababaki history, admiring artwork, and checking out the gift shop. There is something of interest for everyone - lots of history to put everything into perspective, fashion, art, tools and weapons, and so much more. I only wish we were still here for the big festival the weekend after we left. I was looking forward to stopping here as part of our vacation and am so glad we had a chance to do so and took the time. Highly recommend you do the same to get an idea of the history of the area.

A MUST while you’re in Bar Harbor in my opinion. A very well curated museum showcasing Wabanaki history and culture- I will definitely be back next time we’re in the area as we were limited on time.

Excellent museum highlighting the Native History of the area. Wonderful to walk through. If you like to trad all the descriptions, allow 4 hours or so.

A great museum that I highly recommend. Beautiful and modern exhibits with some changing content. Listen to speakers in local languages, contemporary music, and two short films. Very friendly staff. It's amazing how much is in the space. Remember to go downstairs too. I had wanted to see the large room but it was closed.

The Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company is a well-established provider of unforgettable marine adventures during the summer months. Offering an array of tours, including thrilling whale watching excursions and serene sunset cruises, this company invites visitors to explore the stunning waters around Bay Harbor.
Wonderful experience! Saw several humpback whales over the course of several hours, and was fully informed throughout by the announcements guy, who fully explained everything we saw. Staff was really friendly, and the boat was great. Conditions were windy and not great, but that didn’t stop our ship: we raced through the 6-7 ft waves at 35mph, and ultimately found what we were after. It was cold, even in the middle of summer, so definitely bring warm things even if it’s sunny and warm on shore. The experience is really unforgettable, and easily worth the price of admission. Highly recommend!

My husband and I decided to immerse ourselves in Bar Harbor with a whale watch. It was truly amazing! One of the best experiences ever! The crew was knowledgeable and taught us about a wide variety of marine life. You watch whales and dolphins in their natural habitat was one of the most breathtaking experiences of my life. I would recommend this your to anyone. Definitely worth every penny!

I booked this for my husband and I the day off on a holiday weekend. So I’m happy we were able to still score tickets. We done the Happy Hour Sunset Cruise. The staff was extremely kind, polite, and very well educated on the history and area around where we sailed. There were plenty of snack and beverage options on the boat. The views were spectacular! If I had to give any advice I’d say dress accordingly, it’s windy if you choose outdoor seating and when that sun starts to set it gets cold. But luckily there were plenty of seats inside to warm up and block the wind!

I apologize for my language but you would have to be a bougie person to write this any less than five stars. The three of us did this 2 1/2 our cruise at Sunset with a bar for $120. Stunning sites of the area as well as spotting of bald eagles, seals, and many other animals. The first hour was narrated for the Sunset Cruise in the last hour and a half was just riding around jamming to music enjoying drinks and sights. You arrived back at Sunset to a bustling Harbor community and a beautiful evening.
P K — Google review
While looking online to book a cruise, we came across this option. It was a very nice cruise with an informative narration by Gene. We rode through the harbor and around Acadia national park. We also came very close to a lighthouse and were able to take many pictures, and look for seals. We did see an eagle in a nest, seals, and many other birds. After the first hour, they turn music on, and it turned more into a relaxed atmosphere with looking at the sunset and enjoying the views. It was a good experience, and we would definitely do it again.
Jeff — Google review
Our sunset cruise with Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co was great. We got to see many species of birds, including a bald eagle, and harbor seals. It was overall a wonderful evening experience. Highly recommend to enjoy their difference cruise options while in the Bar Harbor area.

My husband and I did the lobster and Egg Island tour today! The weather was amazing and we got to see some spectacular views. The guide explained the lobster harvesting process and we got to see multiple lobsters and crabs. After the lobster harvesting was done we went to Egg island and saw many seals and birds. They had a couple pairs of binoculars that guests could use! The guide and the captain were very nice and knowledge!
Lucielle C — Google review
After three consecutive days of whale watching with Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co., I can confidently say this is by far the best whale watching operation out there! The crew was warm and welcoming, the captains navigated skillfully and safely around the whales, giving everyone incredible views, and the naturalists, Julie and Zack, shared a wealth of information throughout the trips. Unforgettable experiences from start to finish!

It now serves as a community theater bringing excellent entertainment options for all ages to downtown Bar Harbor.
This theater is an absolutely gorgeous historical building with a great selection of movies and live shows. The staff are friendly. The bathrooms are clean. And the prices are stellar. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area!

This is an amazing Art Deco style theater from 1932 in Bar Harbor. The front area is all original wood decor, includung the ticket booth. Movies are still shown here. A wonderful trip back in time.

Overall an excellent venue with an intimate space, dedicated staff, and a vibe only a small town can offer. We will definitely be keeping an eye out for shows here in the future, both because of the acoustics of the place, but also the opportunity to visit and hike around MDI!

Criterion Theater is a beautiful old theater in the heart of Bar Harbor. While it is closed during the pandemic, it is worth a visit and a place to enjoy a show. Spend some time looking at the detail in addition to whatever is playing.

Bought tickets for Steve Earle. No parking in bar harbor at all tonight. Absolutely the worst venue to see a performance at . Don't go unless you're prepared to be disappointed because you didn't get to see what cost you $150. Waste of money. Shouldn't the tourists be gone by now. It's October 11

The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce plays a pivotal role in fostering community spirit and organizing unique events that highlight the charm of this coastal town. One standout event is the Early Bird Pajama Sale, held each November, where locals don their pajamas to shop for holiday gifts at over 30 participating businesses. This quirky tradition brings together residents in a fun and festive atmosphere.
In the winter you can get the Acadia National Park Passport stamps here! The staff was super nice and helpful. Plus you can take a picture with their blue lobster statue while you are there.

The Chamber of Commerce is a nice place to get information. If you are military, you can not get a national park entrance there. You will need to go to the visitor center. The town is a very busy place and you pay for parking.

My wife and I have been looking forward to our bucket list vacation trip to Maine for the past several years. Having spent months planning, we were so excited to arrive October 6th. Unfortunately, Western NC, where we live, was hit very hard by Hurricane Helene. The devastation is hard to explain and many areas around Asheville, NC have been washed away. We personally lost power for 10 days, did not have water and could not get the first call in or out for more than 3 days and then lost calls and had spotty phone service 15 days after the storm. Over 50 thousand homes still remain without power and water. With no way of communication via internet or phone service, we were unable to contact hotels to cancel our vacation. The airport was only allowing inbound emergency in for supplies and there were no commercial flights out for five plus days. It was far more important to help people get basic supplies such as food and water as our main water supply for our area was severely damaged and still is not operating in majority of our area, than to take our vacation. For the most part when I did have spotty cell service, Expedia tried to help me get reservations cancelled. I have always heard great things about the people of Maine. I think you should know the MAIN STREET MOTEL refused to waive the 7-day cancellation policy and charged us for a night of the two we had booked with Expedia. I was told on the phone by the young lady that whomever she asked in management said that "we had plenty of warning about the storm". Now everyone knows this was the storm of the century and was a surprise to the mountains of Western North Carolina. That said, we will dig out from this disaster with 100's of homes and businesses gone forever. The death toll is still unknown as search and rescue to many areas by air only is still taking place 15 days after this horrific hurricane because many roads have been lost to flooding waters and mudslides. I want the town of Bar Harbor to know the thoughts and decision of the Main Street Motel! I am thankful for the resilience and compassion of the mountain people working together at a time no one could have ever been prepared for. Thanks, Nate & Brenda Fisher

We have been visiting Bar Harbor annually for about 15 years and this past visit was somewhat disappointing. Bar Harbor is starting to become your typical tourist trap, placing profit over value. I completely understand how prices are higher in a tourist area, considering I live in the Poconos. Here's my issue. Market price for lobster. Previous visits we've experienced basically the same market price throughout the state. This visit we stayed in Boothbay for 2 days on the way to Bar Harbor. Lobster rolls were $22 and $28 at 2 different places and both were about 6 oz. Bar Harbor I had a lobster dinner at a restaurant which was $58. While walking in Bar Harbor one place was advertising $30 for a 4 oz lobster roll. That's about $120 a pound! Went to Sullivan and Tracey's was $24 for 2 lobster rolls. I asked her why so cheap and she said lobster prices were down and that Bar Harbor was all about profit. Went to Beal's lobster pier the next day and lobster was $20 a pound. The day before we left, stopped at a place for lunch and told the lobster bowl was $45 for 6 oz. so another $120 a pound! Went up $100 overnight! While driving home, went thru Trenton and one of the restaurants advertising lobster dinners for $21. We won't get into the close to $7 for a scoop of ice cream. Bar Harbor is a great place to visit but it's becoming less affordable, especially for families. We have our reservations for next year and if the pricing practice continues as they are, we will not be spending our food money in Bar Harbor. I can justify a couple dollars more but this just seems as we're being taken advantage of. Too much of a price difference.

The Bar Harbor Music Festival, an annual event that has been running for over 50 years, is a haven for music enthusiasts. The festival takes place in July and features a diverse range of performances including classical concerts, jazz nights, opera productions, and recitals by talented musicians. The program includes events such as Tea Concerts, Pops concerts, New Composers showcases, and presentations by the Bar Harbor Festival String Orchestra.
I had the opportunity to usher for many of the concerts in the 2019 season. Performances were consistently high quality: it is clear that the directors (Deb and Francis Fortier) set a high standard for the musicians they invited to play at their events. If you attend one of these concerts, I can assure you it will be one of the highlights of your summer. It certainly was a highlight of mine.

Lompoc Cafe is a laid-back and unpretentious backstreet hangout located on a downtown street. The cafe offers a leafy patio with a bocce court, where patrons can enjoy an inventive bar menu. The spot is known for its cozy and friendly atmosphere, offering a diminutive yet diverse menu that includes signature dishes like seared scallops with Korean barbecue sauce, falafel plate, and house-made peanut sauce with pita bread.
Cute little cafe just off the town square of bar Harbor offering a little bit of something for everyone. A few vegan options - not many but the tofu Banh Mi, Falafel Wrap, Fries, and Peanut Tofu triangles are all vegan. I had the Banh Mi and appreciated the staffs understanding of what was and wasn't vegan, and did a great job of explaining what substitutions would make each dish vegan. Awesome cocktail/cocktail selection too!

Wow! Absolutely loved the food and mocktails at Lompoc. Everything was incredibly tasty and the soup was incredible. Wish I lived closer so I could come back regularly! The service was great as well! If you want a truly delicious meal with flavor and thought this is the place to go.

Incredible meal start to finish! Fabulous cocktails, delicious mussels with a Dijon cream sauce (get the fries to dip in it, trust me), unreal shish kebab plate with dill potato salad…. Salad with fried chicken is a standout too! Lovely, casual atmosphere and great service. We will be back during our week stay. Great bar and backyard as well. Can’t recommend enough.

I was looking for dinner on a busy Saturday evening in October. Most of the restaurants on the main road looked packed and had long waits. This place is tucked away on a side road, and still had a little crowd, but I walked right in and got a table around 5:45pm; it was full by the time I left though. They had a decent menu with some local seafood options. I went with the spicy dijon mussels and root vegetable salad (no entree), and I was very happy with both. Both had good portions. The salad was refreshing and not boring at all. The mussels were swimming in some delicious juices (and came with plenty good bread to soak it up), and they were defintely fresher than the mussels I'm accustomed to getting in the midwest. They have a bar and good variety on the drink menu if that interests you. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I got pretty good service.. no complaints! I'd be happy to come back!

Such a great experience! The Bang Bang Chicken was so good, and we loved that we could customize the tofu banh mi as a wrap , it turned out absolutely delicious. The only thing that fell a little short was the falafel wrap, which was a bit dry. But overall, this place is highly recommended. The warm, friendly service from the waitress and the welcoming vibe from everyone really enhanced our dining experience.

Pleasantly surprised by how good the food was! Also really enjoyed sitting out in the garden patio. Highly recommend - and very reasonably priced compared to other nearby restaurants without sacrificing quality.

Great food and service in Bar Harbor. We had the meatloaf and the chicken pot pie. Both were delicious. This is a gem in Bar Harbor and we will definitely come back on our next visit to Bar Harvesting.
Nathan C — Google review
Service was excellent, waiters were nice and friendly. Food was very mid, meat had too many herbs, salad was very sour and chicken in it was too peppery. Additionally, even though the restaurant wasn't full at all we had to wait for about 30 minutes before we got our food. Portions were small, especially for the price. Talking about the atmosphere and vibe - to me it was slightly too dark. For some it would seem romantic, to me, I almost fell asleep. Overall, I would not come here again.

Located in Seal Cove, Mount Desert Island, the Seal Cove Auto Museum is a must-visit attraction for automobile enthusiasts. The museum boasts an impressive collection of antique automobiles and motorcycles, including over 60 rare and beautiful vehicles from the brass era. Open from May 1 to October 31, visitors can explore this remarkable collection seven days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
A truly unique experience. The signs were so informative and we found a lot of machines built in Buffalo, NY which was super cool. The staff was making rounds answering questions and offering fun facts. We took our time to peruse on a beautiful day - but I'm sure this is also a great way to spend a chilly or rainy day! We saw children going around completing a scavenger hunt as well - great idea! I also really enjoyed the various dresses and picnic baskets on display!

The rich history in this place is amazing. The selection of brass era, cars are not seen pretty much anywhere. In the country.. the volunteers do an amazing job, keeping up the collection. And most of all bringing kids and the neighborhood and community into the museum. It's wonderful to see. Definitely a recommended stop.
Jeffrey D — Google review
The museum staff and curator were wonderful! They were very informative, and the curator gave our party of 6 a private tour around the auto museum sharing history, facts, and other information. The whole experience was amazing! I highly recommend coming here. If you are visiting Bar Harbor, it is only a half-hour drive, and it is definitely worth the trip to Seal Cove to check it out.

If you enjoy the evolution of the automobile then spending some time at Seal Cove Auto Museum will be time well spent. The staff was super friendly and took time to discuss the various autos in this impressive collection. Doesn't hurt either that this museum is about 15 minutes away from Bar Harbor as well.

Highly recommended. Huge selection of antique cars from the 1886 Benze to about 1910. Nothing was automatic so there are more levers then I know what to do with. Nicely curated, good explanations on signs (short and informative), clean, and truly antique cars, motorcycles, toy pedal cars, and much more. Loved how artifacts from the era of the car were displayed next to the car.

Great, esoteric collection of early 1900's automobiles and motorcycles. Staff was friendly, approachable and informative. A real gem that's off the beaten path.

Egg Rock Lighthouse, located at the southern entrance to Frenchman Bay on Egg Rock in Maine, is a unique and iconic structure built in 1875. Its 12-foot-square brick tower and equally cubical lighthouse keeper's house make it instantly recognizable. The area around the lighthouse is now a designated bird sanctuary, with seabirds nesting there.
Beautiful scenery and history. The scenic boat tour took us by it. Loved the wildlife.
D H — Google review
Somewhat interesting history and well known site in Bay Harbor and Acadia area. Best way to see it is on a whale watch of lobster tour. Recommend LuLu' lobster tour as you well get up close, where as whale watch will just point it out from a. Fair distance.
Don D — Google review
You cannot visit without a permit but many cruises will bring you close by for pictures and observation of the historic light. We came by in June and observed seals and pups on the rocks sunning combine that with the views and it's well worth a drive by.
Corey — Google review
Very beautiful. We took a boat tour and got to see it up close.

Lovely to see all of the seals, and waterbirds. Neat to see what the lighthouse looks like.

Such a cool lighthouse with great purpose. Stark reminder of how important the lighthouse is and the symbolism that it stands for.

Museums
The George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History is situated in the former headquarters of Arcadia National Park and is dedicated to showcasing the natural world of Maine and its surrounding regions. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, touch marine creatures in a tidal pool, and admire dioramas of local coastal wildlife. The museum also features a gift shop offering nature-related gifts and books. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to learn about Bar Harbor's wildlife through engaging displays that offer insights into Maine's ecosystems and wildlife.
Loved it. Would have enjoyed going to school here, appreciate the way all different disciplines are incorporated. I do want to know why wasn't 'museum diorama maker' or 'museum taxidermy specialist' on my career list when I was looking at colleges?
Gemini.BigDog — Google review
Great little place. The exhibition is spread all over the space creating an all encompassing environment. It's also interactive. Great dioramas, a nice collection that represents both ocean and land dynamics of the parklands. Worth a visit. This place is special.
Bill D — Google review
Awesome museum! Bigger than it let's on a lot of specimens to see. What made it most interesting was the fact that the animals were taxidermied by students! 20/10 reccomend
Jasmin S — Google review
This is a wonderful museum! It may be small but they have put a lot of work into the exhibits! Our kids age 11,10,9,8 and 8 months loved it! They enjoyed seeing the animals and the skeletons! The adults in our group especially enjoyed learning new facts about the animals in this region! We would absolutely recommend going if you are near the Bar Harbor area! It is free but the ask for donations. It is a worthy cause!

Wonderful little museum. My 5 year old daughter loved it, and so did I. Small but packed with a lot of interesting stuff. We spent a good hour here on a rainy late October afternoon while visiting Acadia National Park.

Compact, informative nature museum just minutes from central Bar Harbor. Pay as you wish donation admission. Hosts the excellent Touch Tank Talk family program led by an Acadia Park ranger. Great for kids of all ages. Highly recommended.

Great Museum! Free will donation. All exhibits are made by College of the Atlantic's very talented students. The tide pool touch tank is great. Rangers know what they are talking about.

The George B. Dorr Museum is worth checking out while visiting Bar Harbor. My daughter loves animals so we decided to check out the museum on a rainy morning during our week stay in Bar Harbor. We were highly impressed by the variety of animals and details on display created by past students and professors. While it is a small museum, it is packed with beautifully preserved animals and a good amounts of hands on items to explore.

The Bar Harbor Historical Society is a seasonal repository showcasing local history exhibits and memorabilia with free admission. Housed in an old convent building, the collection features various artifacts such as old photos, kitchen gadgets, vintage camera equipment, milk bottles from closed dairies, china, glassware, Civil War memorabilia, and more. Notable attractions include the Abbe Museum documenting the history of local Wabanaki tribes.
My wife and I visited here on Monday, October 7, 2024. It's the former summer "cottage" of some old big-moneyed partner of John D. Rockefeller's (last name Bowdin) that was built back during the Gilded Age (around 1900) in America. The local historical society has fixed it up quite nicely and all of the displays are top shelf. Each room provides a lot of good historical information on many different topics, and many are not just about the home itself or the Bowdin family who occupied it during the summer seasons. Much of the information on display is about the town of Bar Harbor and the nearby Acadia National Park. If you are into history, this is a must stop while you are staying in the Bar Harbor area for a vacation. It will take you about 2-3 hours if you want to see it all and read all of the information in each of the rooms' displays. It's a self guided tour, or you can do it with a local tour group or guide. I think the admission was like $10 each, which was quite reasonable. The greeter / hostess was a very nice woman who was able to answer all of our follow-on questions that were not completely explained in the display rooms. Probably not a good place to take children under age 9, or ill-mannered teenagers who aren't interested in learning anything about their ancestors and US history.

Local history of the wealthy that vacationed here mostly from New York. This summer home is filled with family artifacts and run by the BH historical society.

A lovely Bar Harbor mansion that has been converted into a historical museum. They have a caring staff who make sure their exhibits are beautifully arranged and the building is in excellent repair. I love views and gardens, which is what I took pictures of. The veranda was a lovely place sit and enjoy those views.
Dawn M — Google review
Beautiful example of architecture from the “gilded age” of Bar Harbor. Built in 1903 and only owned by 2 families, woodwork and floors are original. Acquired by the Historical Society during the ‘70’s, they have done a wonderful job of creating an authentic period atmosphere.
Tim W — Google review
Enjoyable tour of a quaint house that is well preserved and has a bit of history. The tour guide (Daniel) was fun and entertaining. Enjoyable way to spend a portion of your evening. Stairs, no elevator, so be prepared to walk and climb. Nothing too strenuous.
Stephen J — Google review
We took the guided tour on a Friday. Erin, our guide, was fun, informative, and has a real passion for Bar Harbor. I always prefer a guided tour instead of just walking and reading. If you like history, architecture, interior design, and fun facts, you’ll enjoy this. Thank you, Erin!

We loved visiting La Rochelle! We didn’t quite make the connections we were supposed to from the self-guided tour book to the rooms, but I especially loved the map room.

Beautifully restored mansion with lots of history and interesting objects and stories. The people were very nice and friendly. Admission was a little expensive but considering they will use it to take care of the historical building and items, it's a worthy donation.

Embark on a unique cruising experience with Sea Princess Cruises, departing from Northeast Harbor and offering a distinct perspective of Mount Desert Island. Witness wildlife, charming summer residences, and the Cranberry Islands while navigating protected waters. The scenic nature cruises provide opportunities to observe seals, bald eagles, historic homes, and the picturesque fishing village of Islesford on Little Cranberry Island. Additionally, marvel at the stunning beauty of Somes Sound Fjord's mountain peaks and rugged shores.
It was great! Winston the naturalist was wonderful! He engaged everyone to join in. The stop was great we enjoyed talking with park ranger in museum. Met a wonderful lady who lives there year round since 1950 and all her kids and grandkids live there too! The boat was comfortable and we enjoyed all the information.
Connie L — Google review
My wife and I took the 930 to 1215 tour out of Northeast Harbor around several of the islands and up into the sound. The naturalist was very knowledgeable and friendly and ready to answer any questions. The boat captain and crew were very attentive and made sure that everybody got a look of anything to see. We saw lots of birds, porpoises, as well as lighthouses and the other magnificent scenery around Acadia National Park. Well worth the price. Pictures to follow.
William P — Google review
Had a great time on Sea Princess today. We saw seals, various sea birds, and even a bald eagle. Also got to learn some great facts about the park and lobster culture in the area. Highly recommend going on the morning tour with a National Park Ranger, and making sure you get the park cancellation stamp at the Islesford Historical Museum.
Jess L — Google review
A well run tour from Northeast Harbor. Plenty of space on board for all. Shaun and Betty are both really experienced and knowledgeable. We headed out in blue skies and by the time we had gone out to Little Cranberry island the sea mist had rolled in. This didn’t spoil the trip however. Shaun steered us towards lots of interesting things along the way. We passed Bear Island Lighthouse. We saw seals and bald eagle and lots of sea birds. We sailed into the fjard (a fjord to the rest of us) and saw the lovely summer cottages. I highly recommend this trip!
Morag C — Google review
Our cruise led by park ranger, Tess, was perfect. She was very knowledgeable about the area and kept our attention during the entire trip. We stopped for about 45 minutes during which time we wandered around Little Cranberry Island. We saw seals and even a bald eagle. A highlight of our time in Acadia!
Amy C — Google review
Had a wonderful time on the nature cruise with stop in Little Cranberry island. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the whole boat crew was friendly. We appreciated how they turn the boat when something is spotted or pointed out so you don’t have a bad seat. Everyone gets to see that way. We did go on a Sunday so not everything on little cranberry was open that could have been Saw bald eagles, osprey, seals and more
Ana M — Google review
We visited on a Tuesday morning in late June 2025. There was plenty of parking spots and they said you could park anywhere that didn't say reserved or no parking. So we parked under a bunch of trees since it was supposed to be a pretty warm day. We booked the 9:30AM Islesford Historic Cruise with the NPS Ranger over to Little Cranberry island. We booked the cruise months in advanced and it looked like the cruise was sold out. We at least had a very full boat. Check-in was at 9AM and we just walked up tot he building and there was a window there where we talked to the admin staff. We paid about $400 for 7 adults, 2 children and 2 toddler/infant. We were told that once we had checked in, we would just wait down by the dock where the granite bench was and the ranger would tell us what to do from there. We sat in the last row in the back when we got onto the boat. It was a little difficult to hear the ranger talk sometimes. There were actually 2 rangers on the first tour because they also shuttle the 2nd ranger to the Little Cranberry Island where they station the Islesford Historical Museum run by the NPS and also provide tours while the cruise ship is docked at the island. We decided to do our own thing and skipped the tour. You only get like 45 mins on the island itself and there is just so much to do and see. Before the cruise begins they do a safety talk and then it's off out of the harbor. They drive by a number of old historic buildings and lighthouses and circle around multiple times and make sure both sides of the boat can see and get good pictures. They identify a bunch of wildlife as well. They have laminated maps and info sheets they pass around for wildlife identification. One of the coolest stops was around the Bunker where all the seals were sun bathing on. Sadly this tour is not far enough north to see the puffins. On the island itself there are restrooms. There are also a couple of food shops if you didn't bring your own snacks. We did grab some food at The Salty Fisherman. It's directly adjacent to Little Cranberry Lobster store. When you arrive you actually walk by the restaurant that inspired the Krusty Krab and it looked pretty spot on. There are a couple stores on your right as you walk down the dock to the island itself. Immediately on your left is the Islesford Boatworks. They seem to have children activities inside. I got scolded because I tried to take pictures of what it looked like and they have a strict NO PHOTOS rule because there are youth working in there but I only had adults present in my photos so it worked out. Then right behind that on the left is the Islesford Historical Museum. There was a number of exhibits in there and also a small merch shop and NPS Passport Cancellation Stamp. One of my cousins wanted to mail a post card to himself so he quickly ran into town to do it but the rest of us wanted to check out the food place for a snack. Sadly after we got the food and ate it, it was basically time to go back. We only had a min to step into the couple of shops on the pier as we raced back to the boat. I took a few photos and had quick conversations with the owners but that was it. In the future definitely wouldn't mind coming out on different ferry and stay for the better part of a day exploring this island. We headed back and made some more stops along the way hunting for wildlife. The cruise lasted about 3 hrs and when we got back we were still hungry and luckily the Bucking Lobster food truck was right there in the middle of the parking lot and the food was very good. Overall a great cruise experience with Sea Princess and NPS. They did allow strollers on the boat as well but they needed to be folded up and they were stored in the center. Honestly with us only being on the island for 45 mins, I'm not sure if it was worth it for my little 1 and 3 year old nephews. Not sure if we would do this exact cruise again but maybe a different one the next time we visited.
David L — Google review
This was a great tour of bear island, the cranberry isles and somes sound. Also, a nice lunch stop in Islesford. Maureen, a retired park ranger, was our guide and she was awesome! So many stories, area information and she was just a great person. I’ve been coming to the island for years and can’t believe this was my first trip on the sea princess! I highly recommend for anyone wanting a view from the water at a reasonable price.

D’Alessio Gallery offers a pleasant diversion while in Bar Harbor. I am not quite sure how I would classify the gallery’s featured art. It is rather whimsical. If you are looking for your more common Maine landscape art, this may not be the gallery for you. Nonetheless, it is fun to view.

Diver Ed’s Dive-In Theater in Bar Harbor, Maine, is a fantastic family-friendly adventure perfect for kids. This unique boat trip takes you on a journey through Frenchman Bay, where Diver Ed dives underwater and streams live footage of marine life to the boat. Children will be captivated by the real-time underwater exploration and Ed’s hilarious, engaging commentary. He makes learning about sea creatures fun and memorable. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Overall, Diver Ed’s Dive-In Theater is a must-do for families visiting Bar Harbor, combining adventure, education, and tons of fun!

🌊 Unforgettable Family Fun by the Sea! I’m on vacation with my daughter and her family, and she booked this excursion for us—it couldn’t have been more perfect. The experience was truly amazing, especially watching my granddaughters light up as they interacted with the sea creatures. Their curiosity and delight made the entire outing even more special. Our guide was fantastic—hilariously entertaining and incredibly informative. He had everyone engaged, laughing, and learning all at once. It was the kind of adventure that brings generations together and creates lasting memories. Highly recommend for families looking to add a splash of wonder to their trip!

Diver Ed provides an educational experience in such a fun way. The whole family learned a lot and laughed a lot. Our 10-year-old was eager to take part in every part of the experience, from pushing Diver Ed into the water to touching all sorts of sea creatures, to carefully returning the animals to the ocean.
Drinda W — Google review
A wonderful boat ride, learning experience and entertainment! Diver Ed is very devoted to entertaining children while teaching them about the wildlife in the ocean! His crew is knowledgeable and friendly! The directions on how to get there and what to expect or spot on! Would recommend for anybody

We had an absolutely wonderful time with Diver Ed and Captain Evil this past week! Friends who had visited Bar Harbor a few years ago insisted we check out Diver Ed’s Dive-In Theater, and they were so right. This is the perfect family-friendly adventure—equal parts educational and hilarious. The experience is incredibly interactive. Kids (and adults!) learn all about sea creatures in a fun, hands-on way, with plenty of laughs throughout. Diver Ed’s sense of humor keeps everyone entertained, while Captain Evil delivers fascinating facts with flair. At the end of the dive, you even get to touch and learn about the critters Diver Ed brings up before they’re gently returned to the ocean. 10/10 recommend for families visiting Bar Harbor—this is a memory-maker! PS: pack a jacket or a sweatshirt it does get chilly out there and book early as his tours do sell out quickly.

This was our most favorite thing we did on our trip. Kids age 4,7,9. Adults loved it just as much as the kids. Talk about someone who just loves children, understands how they learn, how to engage with them and keep them informed. So educational and fun.

Thank you to Diver Ed, Captain Evil, Shucker Punch, Nori, Elver and Periwinkle, AND MINI ED! My family and I had the very best time on the Starfish Enterprise with you all.
