American restaurant
Nepenthe is a renowned eatery nestled on a cliff in Big Sur, offering delectable California cuisine and an outdoor terrace with awe-inspiring panoramic views. Originally established by Lolly and Bill Fassett in the late 1940s, this iconic restaurant holds deep roots in Big Sur's history. Constructed from redwood and handmade bricks, Nepenthe exudes a charming and relaxed ambiance that has endured through generations.
We were warmly welcomed by Hugo, who had a table for us at seat 102. While waiting, we enjoyed a couple of strong, yet tasty drinks, the perfect way to set the mood. The views were breathtaking, with the Pacific Ocean stretching out in front of us as the sun set. It felt surreal 😁 Instead of appetizers, we decided to share three entrées: the Ambrosia Burger, the scallops, and the steak, and every single dish was outstanding. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the steak was tender and flavorful, and the burger? Hands-down delicious. The quality of the food was jaw-dropping. This was one of those rare, special dining experiences where everything just clicks, the setting, the service, the food. Huge thanks to Hugo and the Nepenthe team for making our evening so memorable!

We had the grilled chicken breast and it was good. The food is pricey, but the beautiful ocean view makes it worth it. We wanted to sit indoors or outdoors, but the wait was about 40 minutes. Since we were hungry, we chose the bar seats. Unfortunately, once you sit at the bar, you can’t move to a table, which was a little disappointing. Still, overall, Nepenthe was a great experience!
Juhyun L — Google review
A timeless Big Sur experience. The grounds at Nepenthe are a destination all their own — perched high above the Pacific, where ocean mist meets redwood air. Between the sweeping coastal views, the lush terraces, and the inviting mix of locals and travelers, this spot captures the spirit of Big Sur like nowhere else. Whether you’re here for coffee, a glass of wine, or simply to watch the sunset melt into the horizon, the atmosphere feels both lively and sacred. Every visit reminds you that beauty doesn’t need to shout — it simply exists, effortlessly, right here.
Kytka — Google review
This is hard to beat on all levels. Go for the atmosphere, the views, the service and the great wine. We loved it so much on our first night in Big Sur, we went back for sunset cocktails on the deck the next night. Go, it's a crown jewel and the rewards are rich!! Get the chicken!! Wow!!
Adam R — Google review
Beautiful coastal views, definitely worth the drive. However not for the food. Mediocre, lacking flavorful, small portions. Overpriced 'cafeteria' food. Not worth the wait or the money. Very nice gift shop though. Parking can be tricky and limited. FYI Not accessible for wheelchairs nor anyone with difficulty walking. Several stairs, no ramps, to climb to restaurant. Go for the views, not the food. Disappointing.
Isabel C — Google review
Nice place to have lunch. Little expensive but the view makes it worth. Sitting outside and looking at the ocean while birds are chirping is beyond words!! Food is good too. Everyone is friendly and so helpful.
Amandeep K — Google review
The location is everything with Nepenthe. The food was definitely overpriced, but you pay for the view. My best salad was delicious, husband’s French dip was ok-bread too hard. Daughter’s Ambrosiaburger was delicious! Service was super friendly, which I always appreciate!

Absolutely spectacular views - can see for miles! Feels like a hidden retreat, surrounded by nature, deer grazing nearby. Excellent food and service, great place to spend a relaxing afternoon.

Restaurant
Nestled in the enchanting landscape of Big Sur, Big Sur River Inn is a historic gem that has welcomed visitors for over eighty years. This rustic retreat offers a unique TV-free lodging experience, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in nature's beauty. Dining here is a delight, with traditional Californian cuisine served right by the riverbank.
Bring earplugs and a cooler. With that you are all set to enjoy this great place! We had a river suite but no matter what room you get the road noise and delivery trucks are very loud especially early in the morning. Also no Fridge so make sure you have a cooler and the staff will keep Providing you with ice. Sitting in the river absolutely magical! Friendly staff. Rooms simple, very clean, super comfy bed and great coffee and tea provided. Front room murphy bed room And porch great view of River. Chairs in the river absolute highlight. Nice atmosphere in the restaurant and very friendly staff. Little market right next door has the best breakfast burritos! Great coffee place past the store.

We didn't stay here, but we stopped by while dealing with a medical situation. There is no cell coverage in Big Sur. It was a busy long weekend. The staff were very helpful in letting us use their phone and office, despite us not being guests of the venue. Our presence, no doubt, caused a huge interruption to their day, but they were generous, kind, and supportive with a smile all along. The venue looked lovely. We'll definitely be stopping by next time we're in the area.

I left behind some belongings accidentally including my custom prescription glasses. The hotel said the items were found and they would ship them to me. I have never been able to get anyone to call me back to email me tracking info for the package, which never arrived. No manager has ever responded to my many many calls about this and as we speak I have been on hold for an hour trying to understand what happened. We had a nice stay here but I would never return based on my experience. Everyone that works there seems nice but totally clueless.

Listen I know how hard it is for small businesses to thrive so that's why I'm being kind in my star rating but I think people should know what they are paying for. My partner and I booked a 2 night stay at the river "suite room" for a whopping 1100 dollars after fees and taxes and we arrived to a very outdated room with stains all over the carpet, and smell of sewage before we even used the bathroom. The internet service was shotty at best, but the kicker was the constant sounds of drivers and or people screaming in the parking lot. I wouldn't normally write a poor review for a small business but it feels like we were literally swindled by positive reviews and TikTok viral posts. For over $1000 for two nights for this spot.. normally I could cough it up for profits but this felt really egregious.. if you're looking to enjoy the river chairs just visit the restaurant and call it a day.
Megan I — Google review
We had such high hopes for this place. The check in and out process was relatively simple, but obviously the cleaning staff and desk staff don't communicate so there was confusion as to whether our room was clean. The day we checked out we went to breakfast early and took a short drive and when we returned the cleaning staff was already in our room - before we checked out! The rooms across the street from the main hotel are very small, dated and dark. Perhaps the rooms at the main hotel are different. This was not worth what we paid. Very disappointed.
Denise P — Google review
This place is amazing! Their food at the Restaurant is great. Drinks are awesome, you can have them while sitting down at the river. I always visit here when driving up the coast!
J. L — Google review
Long time favorite. Historical lodge and restaurant dating back to 1800's. Updated rooms and restaurant. A must see. Enjoy with your feet in the river. Fantastic food and ambiance.
Jamie H — Google review
We stopped here while cruising highway 1 at Big Sur, as it was it coincided with Carmel Car Week so lots of exotica on the roads, my red mustang included lol 😂 Lovely place to stop, beautiful location, you can sit in the river on relaxing chairs, how cool! We bought a beer and wine and chips (French fries type) from the outside bar. It was very busy but I think we hit peak lunchtime with the Shelby club having a lunch meeting in the outdoors eating area. We found seating on a bench overlooking the river. If you’re in the area then defo stop and have a break here. On the day in August there was some fog and wind on the coast but just inland a bit here in Big Sur valley it was super warm and sunny ☀️ 🌞 😎👌 Free WCs available for customers.

Deli
Nestled in the heart of Big Sur next to the post office, Big Sur Deli has been a beloved family-owned establishment for over 25 years. It's a full-service deli offering an array of delectable dishes at reasonable prices. From made-to-order sandwiches and specialty burritos to savory BBQ chicken and flavorful calzones, there's something for every palate. The cozy eatery also serves up mouthwatering fry chicken and burgers that are not to be missed.
Stopped in tonight and man, are we glad we chose Big Sur Deli to eat. The employee working the counter was kind and provided excellent customer service. I got the vegetable pesto panini (and added avocado, which I STRONGLY recommend doing) and my husband got the pastrami sandwich. We both were surprised by how delicious are sandwiches were and completely full by the end of it! No sides necessary (; though we did get a muffin each for later.
Nomad L — Google review
very cute! the bathroom was pretty clean too. the guy who was helping us out at the counter seems kinda rude tho. not sure why there were also a lot of corvetts
Ari — Google review
The sandwiches were excellent. I thought the prices were a little high, until I saw the size of the sandwiches. They were easily two good sized meals each. I had mine on the sourdough roll which was wonderful.
Amanda G — Google review
I wish I could’ve gotten one of each sandwich! We took these to-go to eat on our hike and it was perfect! They are huge. The Casanova was delicious. They also a ton of cute souvenirs, great beer and snack selection!
Maddie B — Google review
I had heard that the Big Sur Deli was the place to stop for a hearty meal on cold mornings and I was not disappointed. I was slightly late to breakfast but they whipped me up a breakfast burrito designed for a king (or at least a prince who was down on his luck). I also sampled a delectable double chocolate muffin that I washed down with some chocolate milk for good measure. There were some other options under glass that looked rather good but that will have to wait for another pass. The staff were very kind and knew what they were doing. The Deli itself has some great magnets as well and is attached to the a tasting room where you can sample local beers and wines. I bought a sampling of IPA’s to try while sitting around the fire with/and for my friends, their selection was large and varied. I highly suggest grabbing a post card and utilizing the Big Sur Post Office located next store. It’s a classy move and it costs under a dollar to make someone’s day. I will definitely be stopping at the Big Sur Deli on my next ride through.

Heard this was one of the premiere spots to get sandwiches and food in general at Big Sur. The sandwich was huge and went way above expectations. I ordered a Turkey Sandwich with Swirled Rye bread and it had mayonnaise, dijon mustard, lettuce and tomato. We also ordered a Tuna Salad sandwich with sourdough and it also had mayonnaise, dijon mustard, lettuce and tomato. Nice sandwiches to enjoy the amazing scenery of Big Sur.
Josh B — Google review
I stopped in a little before the taproom opened so I grabbed a sandwich ($10), the up in smoke and a craft beer and had a picnic in Big Sur State Park. The sandwich was amazing nd filling. They also have a great craft beer selection in their coolers. Really hit the spot and a perfect stop after some hiking or a day driving down Highway 1.
Trypp A — Google review
The deli and taphouse have a variety of vegan & vegetarian food options to choose from. We tried enchiladas for dinner and plant based chorizo burrito for breakfast. Both were delicious. The portion size is quite large. Their little general store has souvenirs, basic grocery and camp supplies.

Californian restaurant
Bar
Big Sur Roadhouse, located within the Glen Oaks Motor Lodge, offers a modern-rustic setting where guests can savor seasonal, locally sourced Californian cuisine throughout the day. The restaurant stands out for its sophisticated and artfully presented meats and seafood, prepared using traditional methods but infused with global flavors and accompaniments. Designed by San Francisco's Steve Justrich, the restaurant provides a unique and fitting environment for its Big Sur location.
Big Sur Roadhouse turned out to be an incredible hidden gem for lunch! While the drive along Highway 1 means losing cell service for a bit, the restaurant is easy to spot right off the main road—no GPS needed. I arrived around noon on a Saturday, and while other nearby spots were packed, there was still plenty of parking and open tables here. At first, the lack of a crowd made me hesitant, but wow, was I in for a treat! The food was out of this world. I ordered the Roadhouse burger with a side of fries, and both were absolutely phenomenal—easily some of the best I’ve ever had. The wait time was short, the setting was peaceful and surrounded by beautiful trees, and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. Next time I’m in the area, there’s no question—I’ll be stopping by again. I seriously can’t recommend this place enough!
Sarah — Google review
Hidden gem on Highway 1. Dining options include indoor and picnic/lounge areas in front and back. Oh man, the pulled pork was good (has coles slaw) and shoe string fries are excellent. Beer options include a couple of taps and bottles/cans.
James N — Google review
Gorgeous place to have breakfast or brunch with fresh, local ingredients! Great coffee and cozy outdoor area. Cell phone service is not great down Hwy 1, but it's located conveniently right off the main road so you won't miss it. Will come back again!
Xof M — Google review
Stylish yet relaxed — the perfect Big Sur dining experience. Big Sur Roadhouse blends local charm with a fresh, modern twist, offering California-inspired dishes that celebrate the region’s ingredients and laid-back vibe. The menu is creative without being pretentious, and the atmosphere — all wood, stone, and natural light — makes you feel instantly at home among the redwoods. Whether you’re stopping for brunch, a leisurely lunch, or a glass of wine by the fire, this is one of those places that captures the essence of Big Sur: warm, welcoming, and quietly unforgettable.
Kytka — Google review
Decent food and a great dog friendly patio with beautiful views of the trees and nearby creek. Unfortunately a misunderstanding led to an older lady treating my fiance like a criminal. This left a sour taste in our mouths and we probably won't visit this place again.
Michael R — Google review
Stopped here for a quick lunch before our hike at Pfeiffer State Park. It was clean, modern, and the food was fresh. They had a cute outdoor area in the front and off the back to eat.
Jamie K — Google review
Despite ordering three entrees, we were immediately scolded by our waitress the moment we brought out iron-fortified oatmeal for our toddler. It ruined our good mood. They take it very seriously: no outside food or drink

Food was great, pesto scramble was delicious 😋 The outside patio was beautiful ad well, and great watching the most amazing dark blue, blue jays.

Stopped here on a road trip. The people in the front gifted me and my brother a scone when we stopped for gas. Unbelievably nice people, thank you so much. The ambiance is also spectacular, and the wildlife around is very magical. Will hopefully return some day, much love from Argentina!

Great place to stop by for some coffee and pastries. We’ve only had breakfast here and it’s really nice place to sit down and have coffee. Haven’t been around for their dinners as we usually stop by during start of a hike. Their pastries are more expensive than most places so heads up on that. We had the bacon bow tie and ham and cheese croissants. Mochas and lattes for coffee. Customer service is okay , parking can get tough during peak periods of the am.
MBC — Google review
Had a fantastic dinner here that included fresh, creative flavours in a cozy and inviting setting. Staff were incredibly attentive and we loved the variety of options. Definitely on the pricier end for dinner but absolutely worth it, as is the wine!
Grant — Google review
Nestled in the heart of Big Sur, this bakery is a true gem worth discovering. For us it was a quick stop though definitely would recommend to take some time and visit the bakery in peace and enjoy their offerings. They have ample parking spots for guests moving in and out though we realized that after we had parked outside Big Sur Deli (right next door) though it turned out to be a bit of an incline walk to the bakery which was all fun. On the way to the bakery you do see a fully functional Shell gas station (though it can turn out to be a costly tank fill) that features an air and water station as well. As we approached the Big Sur Bakery, we were immediately drawn to its rustic and inviting exterior. The bakery's warm, cozy interior with wooden furnishings and a welcoming fireplace creates a delightful atmosphere. The open kitchen adds a sense of transparency, allowing guests to watch the skilled bakers in action. The staff at Big Sur Bakery were very friendly and definitely helped us with our questions with the menu. We ordered a coffee and and ice-tea since we were trying to do a very quick stop as we had a long day planned ahead of us. Hopefully we get to taste more of their offerings in our next visit. Cheers!!

My friend and I stumbled upon this place only to have one of the best dinners I have ever had in my life (quite possibly the best). The ambience is cozy and magical. Our server was excellent and we had the pleasure of meeting chef Matt who was lovely! 10/10 would recommend and I can't wait to come back!

One of my favorite restaurants in Big Sur. If I am in the area, I stop here every time. Dinners are wonderful and the staff is super friendly and helpful. All of the dishes are made with great care. I had the Salmon with Potato Dumplings and my wife had the Roast Chicken. Both were excellent! No one of the Big Sur "big name" restaurants, but don't miss this place! Recommend making reservations for dinner.
David S — Google review
A well-known spot that lives up to the reputation. Very cozy woodsy ambiance with really cute indoor and outdoor seating, including several small terraces. The food is pricey - $20 for a breakfast sandwich - but very tasty and more affordable than many nearby options. Don’t skip the vanilla cream bun, I could have eaten 4!
Kyler B — Google review
Delicious bakery! Absolutely a must stop. Their pastries are all delicious - would say this is one of the top 10 croissants I have had. Heads up they don't have much other than pastries so not a full on brunch spot pending what you are looking for. Coffee is also good. Also not a lot of gluten free options so be aware.

Brunch restaurant
The Sur House is a warm and woodsy upscale restaurant in Big Sur, offering locally-sourced American cuisine with stunning ocean views from its terrace. The menu features creatively prepared dishes made with locally sourced ingredients and is complemented by a fine wine list. The restaurant is located within the Ventana property, about 30 miles south of Monterey along Highway 1, and offers breathtaking views of California's iconic landscapes.
What a beautiful restaurant! We ate here three times total for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For dinner, it took quite awhile to get our main entree. Without us complaining or even bringing it up, our waiter proactively checked on us and offered us a free drink for the delay. The other two meals were great. The location is perfect, snd the views are stunning.
Logan W — Google review
My three days staying at Alila Ventana Big Sur have been one of the best three days of my life, and the Sur House is a big reason why. We came here every single day for our complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner as hotel guests. I believe that breakfast and lunch are for hotel guests only but Sur House is open for non-hotel guests for dinner time. Even if you are not staying at Alila, the Sur House is still worth the trek if you’re in Big Sur. The dining here is world class and I was told that the chef is actually from the Michelin restaurant nearby. Every single thing we ate was extraordinarily delicious, and believe me, we tried the whole menu during our stay! Below are some of my favorite selections from the menu for each meal. BREAKFAST — Bagel & Lox (colorful and IG worthy) — Egg Omelet (with fresh eggs from the onsite farm) LUNCH — Habanero wings (perfectly spiced) — Fish & Chips (fantastic fry, not too oily) — Churrasco (this steak is actually my favorite dish of our whole stay) — Market Fish (ours was a beautifully cooked salmon) — Coconut sorbet (DO NOT SKIP THIS!) DINNER — The Hen Egg (sounds simple but has big flavor) — Spanish Octopus (soooo tender) — Squid Ink Spaghetti (but honestly all the pastas are amazing) — Steak, Salmon or Halibut (are the best because for me the poultry options were a bit dry) All the desserts are great and we’ve tried them all, but I just cannot stop thinking about the coconut sorbet. It lives in my mind rent free. Not only was the food excellent, the service was equally as amazing. Our server for most nights was Leo - he is fantastic. He always remembered our names and what we ordered and made sure to wish me a happy birthday. We really felt taken care of and seen. On nice days and nights, Sur House is located in a patio area of Alila Ventana and overlooks the huge blue ocean and Big Sur cliffs. It’s a really stunning sight especially at sunset. On days with very foggy or rainy weather, the party is moved indoors for a more romantic, cozy, wood surroundings dining vibe. I will be dreaming about Alila Ventana and the Sur House for a long time!

Went here from alila, it was one of the most incredible meals from recent memory. The best salad I’ve had, then some crazy egg dish with popcorn that also blew my mind. Both entrees were executed perfectly, and dessert and service were all stellar.

I had a wonderful meal here Sunday morning! The food was amazing, the cocktail was great and the view was stunning. Due to the heat they have been having problems with bees so I was unable to sit outside, however I asked for a table by the window and got it! My server, was very slow, but the kid who was running the food was great! All in all a fantastic experience to start my day!

What not to love about this restaurant? AMAZING views, Awesome staff, Delicious foods and GREAT service. I have nothing, BUT positive reviews for this resort, restaurant and staff. All the staff has done a beautiful job to accommodate and to provide the best quality and world-class experience to all guests. I definitely will return again. Many thanks to the bartenders, chefs and servers for being flexible and patient to provide us with great dishes / drinks / services. We greatly appreciate your artistic ability, dedication and hardwork to please your customers!!

Sur House at Alila Ventana Big Sur delivered one of the most unforgettable dining experiences we’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this place is something special. The setting alone is worth the visit-perched high above the Big Sur coastline, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding forest. It’s the kind of location that makes you pause and just take it all in. We dined there multiple times during our stay, and each meal felt like an event. In the morning, breakfast was served overlooking the cliffs as the fog and marine layer rolled in gently from the sea. It was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely breathtaking. By the evening, the sunset transformed the entire landscape into a warm, glowing canvas of colors. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while enjoying an incredible meal was truly unforgettable. The food was phenomenal. The campanelle pasta was a highlight-perfectly al dente, with a rich, savory sauce that brought everything together beautifully. The rib eye was one of the best steaks I’ve had anywhere-juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Every bite was memorable. Even the bread and small bites leading up to the main course were thoughtfully prepared and delicious. The pizzas were probably the weakest part of the menu, but even then they were still very good-just outshined by everything else. Service was top notch. Every member of the team was warm, welcoming, and attentive without ever being overbearing. They anticipated what we needed before we even asked, and made us feel completely at home. The overall atmosphere was relaxed and elegant, with just the right amount of refinement. Sur House isn’t just a restaurant-it’s an experience. It captures the essence of Big Sur: natural beauty, thoughtful hospitality, and extraordinary food. Whether you’re staying at Alila Ventana or simply passing through the coast, this place is absolutely worth a visit. One of our favorite meals in California, and a place we can’t wait to return to.

the view is very good and food was delicious. they have a fireplace that not only smells great but also people can make smore there. the mussel soup is so good and that’s from someone who doesn’t eat seafood. the service is very good! the drink with a bubble on top tastes like soap water to us. they took the drink back with no questions asked and gave us a fat old fashioned instead. if you stay at the resort, the food is included but the alcohol isnt. there’s a trail that brings you from and back to the resort, but i think you can also call a golf cart to take you too.

A very pretty place, overlooking the Pacific Ocean - it‘s an elevated location secluded by forest. The tables at the front are limited :) so, be patient or come a bit later. I did not enjoy any food but it looked very well prepared, with the utmost diligence. Where is your coffee gone, though? I enjoyed two coffees; the taste of the coffee itself is very accommodating. What I did not enjoy was the amount of coffee you actually receive. I mentioned it to one of the waiters and she kind of understood what I meant before I said it … In detail, my two orders: 1. Cappucino: there was about 1/5 of the cup filled with coffee, the rest was the egg foam; yeah, I really like egg foam BUT I also like to have some coffee with it, please 2. Latte: strange enough, there was egg foam on it again, although less … hmm, a Latte with egg foam? Anyway, the amount of coffee was slightly better (1/3 of the cup) but still way on the low end of what you usually get in other high end places. Could you please serve some decent coffee if you already charge 8 USD per coffee? I think its not too much to ask …

Breakfast restaurant
Deetjen's Restaurant is a charming and cozy stop nestled in a lodge, offering a delightful menu of American meat and seafood dishes paired with local wine. Since its establishment in 1939, not much has changed, preserving the warm and inviting atmosphere that draws visitors to enjoy breakfast in the magnolia-shrouded courtyard or indulge in dinner within one of the four small dining rooms illuminated by candlelight.
Such a cute place with a charm that greets you as you arrive and continues throughout. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. The eggs Benedict with home fries was absolutely delicious and we shared an enormous blueberry pancake both of which I’d recommend.

Your restaurant is so special. The atmosphere and history you have is wonderful. We went there twice for breakfast and enjoyed both times very much.

Amazing food. Such an interesting experience and an eclectic atmosphere. Rustic environment. So good! Perfect brunch!

Best french toast ever! Get the one with the homemade cream cheese. Overall this place never disappoints. Its got a very rustic charming ambience - service is always great. A must try if you are in Big Sur

Unique and eclectic restaurant. Terrific service and good coffee. I ordered a couple eggs scrambled with spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms and it was excellent. My friend ordered the eggs benedict with salmon (I think), which he said was very good.

This visit was the most enjoyable dining experience that I've had on this trip. Five of us arrived at 10 this Monday morning for breakfast. There was no wait and several empty tables. The service was excellent from Fernanda and others. The atmosphere was very rustic and created an excellent atmosphere for our meal. We each ordered a different breakfast entree and everyone was satisfied with their choice. I had Huevos Ranchos which was perfectly prepared and delicious. The change was about $20 per person before tip. Highly recommended.

I have managed to miss this gorgeous place on previous trips to Big Sur, but was encouraged by a friendly fellow traveller to try their breakfast. What an experience! Now registered as an historic site, the whole place is so eclectic, quirky and unique in the most beautiful way. Every frame looks like a Dutch still life painting. There was a gentle fire burning in the fireplace, the service was also warm and attentive and the food was excellent. I indulged in French toast and it was delicious while the rest of my group had eggs Benedict, also perfect. The accommodation looks extremely enticing too so I look forward to my next visit.

One of the best restaurants I ever tried. The place itself is kind of vintage but cute! Food was outstanding, the lamb and the fish, the lava cake and peacock pie were all very tasty. Service was very good too!

Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Big Sur, Ripplewood Cafe is part of the charming Ripplewood Resort. This rustic retreat features 17 cozy cabins, a well-stocked grocery store, and a convenient gas station. The highlight for many visitors is the delightful cafe that offers scrumptious breakfast and lunch options. Guests can enjoy their meals either indoors or al fresco in the serene garden setting, making it an ideal spot to savor delicious food while soaking up nature's beauty.
After a whole morning of hiking and driving, food was delicious and both Tito and Maria were very kind and gracious.

A cozy Big Sur gem that feels like stepping back in time. Ripplewood Cottages, with its charming grocery and rustic restaurant, is the perfect stop for anyone traveling along Highway 1. The food is hearty and homemade — the kind that tastes even better after a morning of exploring redwoods or coastal trails. The little grocery is well-stocked with essentials and local favorites, and the setting under towering redwoods adds to the peaceful, nostalgic atmosphere. Whether you’re staying in one of the classic cabins or just stopping for a meal, Ripplewood captures the simple, authentic spirit of Big Sur living.

Quaint and beautiful, if you don’t want to overpay for the rest of the restaurants around the area, this is your best bet. The breakfast was delicious and fresh, the service was fast and super friendly. Our waitress, a very kind and hospitable older woman, embodied the vibe of the place: Welcoming, friendly, and a joy to talk to. This is the place to go for your meal!

We had breakfast here while staying at the resort and we were very happy with our meal. The service was good and the food was excellent.
Amanda G — Google review
If you are tired of the Big Sur focused on overly expensive brunches trying to re-invent the concept, this place is your answer! A traditional breakfast/lunch venue with good portions and the standard options with the expected California twist of Mexico if you want. Potato gratin as a side, pancakes with or without nuts, omelettes, breakfast burritos, and huevos rancheros... All great, and recommended.
Peter V — Google review
Popped into this place by chance when hiking in the Big Sur area and it was such a fun place with really delicious food. A vegetarian, I got the huevos rancheros and a veggie sandwich and both were delightful. The staff was friendly and the space had indoor and outdoor seating that was very cozy. Absolutely recommend

Restaurant
The Restaurant at Big Sur River Inn is a rustic eatery nestled among the redwoods, offering a predominantly American menu with highlights like old-fashioned apple pie. For a hearty start to your day, indulge in strong coffee, local eggs, and house-made sourdough toast at the quirky restaurant located behind the gas station. Additionally, they serve dinner including exceptional wood-fired pizza.
What an absolute gem. It was 97 degrees back home in Walnut Creek so we hit the central coast and couldn’t have found a better place to cool off under the trees with our feet in the water. Granted, we only had a beer but wow, we will absolutely be back. Great place to chat with friends in the water or alone with a good book.
Ernesto H — Google review
An absolutely beautiful area. Wow. We did not stay here for our trip, but man did we want to come back to stay here. It looks great. The river chairs, come on now! Sounds like a dream. We did stop by the store to get some souvenirs and, the staff was helpful with information. Their sand sculpture was cool. We went over to the gas station just to check out the tiny islands, but we found awesome ice cream. A cool roadside spot if you are driving through, or seemingly a really awesome spot to spend a day or two. The restaurant also seemed to have delicious smells.

We had an incredible lunch at the Big Sur River Inn Restaurant, sitting on the balcony overlooking the river—absolutely beautiful setting. The food was amazing, the service was top-notch, and the whole atmosphere made for a perfect stop on our trip. What made the experience even more memorable was what happened after. After lunch, we walked down to the river where they have chairs set up right in the water—such a peaceful and unique touch. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my wallet had slipped out of my pocket while relaxing there. It wasn’t until we got all the way back home that I realized it was gone. A few days later, I received a message on Facebook from someone at the River Inn letting me know my wallet had been found and turned in. They went out of their way to track me down, confirm it was mine, and even shipped it back to me. That level of kindness and integrity is rare—and it says so much about the people who work there. Huge thank you to the team at Big Sur River Inn. I’m incredibly grateful, and I’ll absolutely be back.
Dillon L — Google review
Overall this is a good place to enjoy some lunch and a drink after a long hike. You get to dine either inside with a view of the river, or outside on the river. The Inn has set up chairs in the water for you to sit and enjoy the water on your feet, while you eat or just relax. Seating is limited in the river, so you may need to be patient, but the quiet of the water and the birds chirping around is very relaxing.
Maria C — Google review
We spent hours here: lunch, walking around, soaking our hiking tired feet in the cold river, enjoying beverages, talking story to old folk. Food was delicious: ceviche, chicken fajitas, mango margarita. Pricy but worth the scenery. Staff was pleasant. Family environment all around the river kids playing in nature like they should.
George M — Google review
Famous restaurant at the river where you can sit in chairs in. Enough tables for large groups. Staff is quick. Hamburger was not good, i sudpect it was burned and that part was cut of. Would recommend going a little bit further to a restaurant who puts more effort in the food.

What can you say about a restaurant next to a river with chairs in the river. Open deck and inside seating. Fantastic food rustic atmosphere. Friendly staff. Family friendly and still fun for adults

Grocery store
Located in Big Sur, the Big Sur River Inn General Store is a historic property that serves as the area's first hotel and restaurant. It also functions as a much-needed stop for essential supplies while driving through Big Sur. The general store offers a wide range of products, from camping supplies to local wines, made-to-order pizzas, and smoothies. The lodge and restaurant provide a rustic log cabin ambiance with indoor or outdoor dining options overlooking the river.
Our lodge in the middle of the night drive home was Big Sur. My family was frustrated to learn that a recent landslide had blocked a road and had to take a detour. So we decided to grab a bite to eat and drive out to survive, and we went in there without even thinking about ordering a sandwich. Oh my god, it was such a tough chicken sandwich to describe how I felt. An old lady at work made it for me. We baked the common bread and added some tough chicken and dark muggy leaves in between. I highly recommend it. It was a tough chicken sandwich.

A Must-Stop Spot in Big Sur! Every time we head down the coast, we make it a point to stop at the Big Sur Village General Store & Burrito Bar. The shop itself is super convenient—loaded with everything from road trip snacks and drinks to camping gear and cool local goodies. But the real highlight? The burritos! Fresh, huge, and customizable with all your favorite fillings. You can also go lighter and turn it into a hearty salad. We enjoyed ours while relaxing in Adirondack chairs right by the river—feet in the water, full bellies, total bliss. The staff was welcoming, the atmosphere laid-back, and the scenery unbeatable. Honestly, it was so good we didn’t even think to take a photo. This place deserves all five stars!
Norm H — Google review
Great store with great price snacks (get their small batch pop corn). Breakfast menus may seem expensive at first ($13 for a burrito or egg sandwich to go) but the size is enormous. We got 2 burritos to-go thinking they were breakfast burritos size and they ended up bigger than Chipotle burrito. We got to pick all the different protein, eggs, and carbs going into it. They were so big that we could only finish one at a sit and ended up saving the other for lunch (worked out amazingly). Would recommend if you need quick bites being on the road.
Chelsea H — Google review
Best breakfast burrito with bacon. We also had a sweet patry and coffee which were good. Staff was very nice. They also make hot sandwiches but only from 11:00am
Adriana K — Google review
Stopped in for a bite on our way to Pfeiffer Beach. Loved the general store, and the food was amazing!
Jamie S — Google review
The Chorizo burrito was on par with the fictional “meat tornado” from parks and recreation. Even better if you find a good spot on the 1 overlooking the coast and eat the burrito with a view.
Jeremy W — Google review
Definitely worth checking out. It’s a roadside stop. Kitsch and wholesome and fun. Neat stuff and great food. If you’re out west and driving down the coast it’s a great rest stop to stretch your legs and buy some souvenirs. Put it on your list if your driving by and you won’t be sorry!
Rob L — Google review
Small convenience store bait has all the essentials. Conveniently located on the main road. Only downside is the overpricing.
