Farmers Markets
Marché alimentaire de la Croix-Rousse is a must-visit open-air food market located along Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse in Lyon. This bustling market offers a wide array of local and organic produce, meats, cheeses, and prepared foods. Visitors can indulge in tastings and purchase high-quality ingredients while taking in the stunning views of the city from its hillside location.
This is what a real farmer's market looks like. Long lines of vendors selling the freshest meats, cheeses, vegetables and fruits. Also some cooked food ready to eat too. A must visit when in Lyon.
DANNY L — Google review
A comprehensive farmer's market with fresh and affordable produce. Cheese, vegetables, fruit, meats, seafood – this place is perfect for getting groceries or even a quick snack to-go. We bought a number of fruits to eat on the spot and they were very fresh, especially the prunes and peaches! It was lovely to stand around and watch life go by, the locals here are generally content with taking things slow and enjoying a leisurely pace.

Discover the culinary delights of Lyon at L'atelier Des Chefs, where you can immerse yourself in the art of cooking. Whether you're interested in Italian, Asian, or French cuisine, or even pastry making, there's something for every taste. Perfect for food enthusiasts and special occasions like birthdays or bachelor/bachelorette parties.
I went with my friend and we knew based on other reviews that the class would be entirely in French. I understand a little, my friend none, but we enjoyed the class! Easy enough to follow along. We did the 3 course 2 hour class. I think the marketing team for this company needs to update their websites to say that it is only in French (we expected that, but based on other reviews and our reception, that's not typically the case). The staff at the atelier seemed worried that my friend and I would be upset about the lack of English, perhaps from past experience of people getting upset with them. They seemed prepared to get complaints from us, defensive, but I can imagine they've had to deal with tough customers expecting English. The chef was helpful when we needed some English clarification during the process, and we were able to follow along by watching. The other participants were really friendly and made for a lovely experience!! The class was divided into two teams. We prepared the ingredients and the chef gave insight into how the dishes are created and technique. We assembled the final dishes and ate--delicious!! I recommend if you enjoy cooking, good food, and want a unique Lyonnais experience!
Lelannie L — Google review
Great class! We came with a group of 12 young students and all had a great experience. I love that they taught us technique, like how to properly cut, how to know when the pan is hot enough, etc. And the meal was also delicious. Thank you!
E. R — Google review
What a wonderful experience! Everyone here, especially our chef/educator Jean Philippe, were kind, excellent, entertaining and focused on our group having a great time. The food was amazing and Jean Philippe made us feel like we can bring these Lyon techniques home. High recommend!
Mark R — Google review
Came knowing no French, left knowing how to cook 3 courses. Chef Maxime demonstrated all the skills and techniques for preparing the dishes. The class was fun and interactive and the locals were friendly and welcoming. I'd recommend their classes even if you do not speak French, though I feel you would learn a lot more if you have some understanding. We left with full bellies and big smiles. Merci.
Liam G — Google review
The people here are very nice. However, we did not experience full working experience here. We only got to try some of the steps, but not all the steps on how to cook a dish. Not really a real cooking class actually. And the food we were taught to cook was still a bit raw.

Market
Marché Saint-Antoine, located by the Saone River in Lyon, is a bustling outdoor food market that offers an authentic glimpse into the city's culinary scene. It is renowned as the largest market in Lyon and draws locals who seek out fresh produce, meats, cheeses, breads, and regional wines. The vibrant atmosphere with its array of colors and aromas creates an enticing experience for visitors. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to sample various foods before making a purchase.
Beautiful market. It’s here on Saturdays and Sundays. A great place to get some tasty souvenirs to take home!
Olga V — Google review
Marché Saint-Antoine is a must-visit if you’re in Lyon and love exploring local flavors. Nestled along the Saône River, this small fresh market is a vibrant and authentic spot, perfect for anyone seeking top-quality produce and a genuine taste of French daily life. The fruit and vegetables are incredibly fresh and often local—crisp apples, fragrant peaches, plump tomatoes, and seasonal specialties that change with the calendar. The vendors are friendly and knowledgeable, often happy to offer suggestions or let you taste before you buy. The cheese selection is especially impressive for a market of this size. From creamy Bries to tangy chèvres, it’s easy to put together a perfect picnic or stock up for a dinner with friends. Some stalls even offer regional specialties you won’t find in supermarkets. It’s not a large market, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm and quality. The setting by the river adds to the experience—grab a few things and enjoy a snack nearby with a view.
Wisanu T — Google review
Lovely and lively Sunday market. Mingle with the locals picking season’s fresh produce into their roller-bags for proper family dinner later in the day. Oysters, cheese, veggies, pastry, mimosa bouquets and the mysterious tuber seller, yes you guessed right, the last truffles for the winter…
Eeva-Maria — Google review
Great market with lots of local stalls selling food and fresh produce. We tried a kebab roll which was delicious! Definitely recommend checking out if you're around on a Sunday.
Sam L — Google review
Went on a Sunday, great local market vibe with maybe close to fifty vendors and sellers. Baked goods, cheeses, fresh seafood including fresh oysters, ready to eat food and fresh vegetables and fruits
Linea V — Google review
Everything your stomach desire! Coming to France, one of the most exciting things are opens markets, and this one did not disappoint. The sight of fresh produce makes your heart full, and de delicacies are tremendous. You got everything from vegetables, fruits, dried meats, cheese, seafood, wine, bread and of course you can stand buy oyster to eat right there in the open air with a glass of sparkling wine. The rush of people and the atmosphere was wonderful.
Ban-Mai P — Google review
Magic place in Lyon - THE traditional French fresh food market, every morning (except Monday). What could be more symbolic for this city than a food market! The sound, the smell, the colours... Amazing atmosphere, great choice of perfect products, smiling and welcoming standkeepers... So difficult to refrain from tasting and buying everything!
Marcin W — Google review
Great local market for all. Lots of cheese, fruit and veg and meats to buy and eat. Would recommend coming here on a sunny Sunday, buy food and sit by the river to have lunch.

The Plum Lyon Teaching Kitchen in France offers an exceptional cooking school experience. The owner and teacher, Lucy Vanel, creates a delightful and informative atmosphere for the classes. The day begins with a visit to a local farmers market that is described as one of the best ever experienced, showcasing an array of high-quality produce and products. Participants have praised Lucy's wealth of knowledge and teaching techniques, particularly appreciating her insights into French cooking.
We were looking for a special experience with our teenage son, and the market table class certainly fit the bill. First, a walk to the market, through the historic Croix-Rousse area, with stops to catch our breath and learn about the history of the area and Lyonnaise cooking. At the market, Lucy clearly knew the produce and the producers, and was very selective about her choice of ingredients. Back at the cooking school, which is a beautiful kitchen/living/dining space, we set about washing all the ingredients in preparation for cooking. One thing I liked was that we got to do everything. After a demo from Lucy, we would carry out her instructions in a relaxed, informal atmosphere, while following safe, hygienic cooking practices. As someone who does a fair amount of cooking, I still learned lots of useful tips and techniques. I'm amazed by how much we achieved and the wonderful meal we created, accompanied by delicious wines and cheeses. Thank you Lucy, for giving us a memorable experience. I look forward to coming back for more.
Ronelle M — Google review
If you are looking for a genuine immersive experience in French cuisine, Plum is THE place. The owner, Lucy, took us to the market in the morning and we decided to create an entire meal based on the seasonal availability of all the ingredients needed for the meal. Along the way to the market we received a bit of the fascinating history of the area called Les Pentes and continued up to La Croix-Rousse market to gather all the ingredients for our meal of Guinea Fowl and Rabbit. (Both were firsts for me!) We learned how to de-bone both critters and stuff them with Shitake mushrooms. We also created a beautiful herb salad and an caramel-Apple tart for dessert. We were at it for the entire day (9am-7pm) but the time flew by as we were very busy preparing, tidying, and socializing with the other participants. Lucy offered a delicious local cremant with our charcuterie/lunch and then two nice local wines with dinner. We were tired but very pleased with our day. If you want an expert lesson on French cuisine, Plum Kitchen is a must.
Dennis G — Google review
I wish I had my class with Plum Lyon earlier! From well-rounded class program design to seamless instruction buildup, from modernly and aesthetically equipped kitchen to Lucy’s knowledge and insights of French cooking, the one-day experience was just perfect for me. Highly recommend it to anyone who’s traveling to Lyon for a short stay or living in Lyon for a period of time. Def worth your time and ticket!
S. M — Google review
I had such an incredible time at Plum Lyon!! I did the Market Table class and it honestly ranks up into the top of my travel experiences and memories. I would go back to Lyon to take this class again and even add on a new one! Thank you so much Lucy for your incredible hospitality and enthusiasm about what you do. I can’t wait to come back!!
Amy — Google review
Wow! What an amazing experience at Plum Lyon! I highly recommend taking the 9-10 hour market class. Lucy is an excellent instructor and so enthusiastic about the fresh products that we picked from the market to use in our meal. As opposed to some other cooking classes in the area, this one is in English so if you are not a French speaker you get the best experience as you don't miss a beat. I will recommend this class to any level of cook-- beginner to professional-- everyone will have a great day!
Kevin P — Google review
Lucy is a great teacher, we really enjoyed our day in the kitchen. She supplements the cooking lesson with historical stories of Lyon that were really interesting and informative. The food was amazing, we definitely plan on recreating some of the dishes at home.
Jonathan M — Google review
Plum Lyon Teaching Kitchen offers an excellent cooking school experience!! As a professional pastry chef, I learned so much from Chef Lucy! She shares a plethora of information and techniques that you can use throughout your cooking life. Our small group of 3 thoroughly enjoyed the market, creating the menu, and spending the day in the beautiful kitchen. I highly recommend taking a class from Chef Lucy Vanel.
Janan J — Google review
My wife and I recently spend a month in France and the "Plum Tuesday" class we took was one of the highlights of the trip. The dinner at the end of class was definitely the best dinner we had during our whole trip. Lucy Vanel, the owner/teacher, is a delight. She makes the whole day fun, interesting and exciting. You start off with a visit to a local farmers market. We love farmers markets but this was the best one we had ever been to. The different styles of vegetables, meats, cheeses, etc. will amaze you. As we walked to the market Lucy explained some of the history of Lyon and specifically her historic neighborhood. After the morning shopping we returned to her large apartment where we started cooking in her professional Kitchen. Everyone has their own area to work in and we all helped prepare the evening's dinner. Along the way there are snacks and wine. You definitely do not go hungry. The dinner is then served in her Dining Room and is a great time with your new friends from the class. Our class size, including us, was 7. I can not recommend this class more highly. If you have any questions or concerns, Lucy is very easy to communicate with and quickly responds. She is an American who married a Frenchman so she is very easy to understand and is knowledgeable about American concerns. If you are looking for a place to stay I also want to recommend "Very nice apartment cosy Lyon Center" hosted by Sylvie which you can find through airbnb. Turns out this apartment is in the same building as the cooking class which makes it very convenient and quick to get to. Have fun on your trip to Lyon.

Baotime, a popular Chinese restaurant in the 3rd district, is renowned for its delicious steamed baozi, small stuffed and steamed buns. Alongside an array of baozi options, they also offer spring rolls, stir-fried noodles, and seasonal soups - all freshly made by hand. This culinary gem provides a delightful gastronomic experience at affordable prices. The flavors are unique and the quality of food is exceptional.
Cute place which is very well connected via public transport - the metro station is about 100 metres away. The outside seating area has a nice ambiance and there is lots of other food places in the area. There is seating indoors and outdoors suitable for groups of up to 8 people. The servers were very polite and the service was incredibly fast. The food was great and we all had a good time. Held back from perfection only because the meal is slightly expensive for the price. Those with a large appetite may prefer to eat elsewhere.
Tongisha — Google review
Honestly for a quick bite to eat this place is superb. It's quick, cheap, the flavours and baos are first class. The staff have created a lovely vibe and really truly provide a friendly service. I had a 4 bao formula, which includes 4 buns, a drink and dessert. These were well sized Bao with plenty of filling, the BBQ, pork and pesto chicken fillings really packed flavour. The buns were light and fluffy so worked perfectly. The panna cotta was pretty good, with an optional spéculoos crumble. Highly recommended, much better option then the terrible pasta/pizzeria place next door.

awesome Food Taste : good Ordering food: awesome Waiting period in afternoon: very little Food item: 2Bao + 2 starter Maybe one day I will come to learn from the chef (they are offering some classes to learn)
Chandra P — Google review
The first time I tried Baos, I wasn't disappointed. The place is relatively small but we could still eat there. They were sadly running short on some types of Baos so the choice was limited, but in the end it's just another reason (if needed) to come back another time.
Elomidas — Google review
Little bit costly and not many options. They messed up my order, I ordered veg. got pork. So watch out for what you have ordered. But Bao was tasty.
Autumn S — Google review
Generously filled bao. Go for the pulled pork and pulled beef/chicken options. And the jasmine iced tea was refreshing!
Eglantine W — Google review
There are some original tastes here, and the quality is on point. That's not a cheap like food, and the price is really ok. 3.5 € for a bao is fair since it's copious. There is a bunch of starters wich are delicious. Here the saleswoman seemed quiet. I'd definitely recommend the experience.
FraiSaY — Google review

Such an amazing experience in Lyon. A great representation of the gastronomic history and life of Lyon. Loved all the stories and information about the great chefs and seeing and trying local specialities. I highly recommend doing a private tour. We went with On City Lyon. The guide was knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tastings were fantastic and we had a great time. The markets were busy with rugby fans but our tour meant we had seats and were able to get in and try a number of different local specialities. One of our favourite tours and visits as a couple.
Rosalie B — Google review
Came on a Sunday afternoon at about 1pm and some shops were already beginning to close. Some items can be pricey so we didn't buy much, though it was nice to see the variety of goods being sold. Would be worth coming if you arrive earlier, where you can spend more time exploring the area.
Jonathan C — Google review
How I wish I’d enjoyed this better. There was so little that was gluten free and the vendors weren’t interested in my questions so I never felt anyone understood enough to feel safe eating there. We were starving! Took some ham and cheese & went to the gf bakery and got done bread but by then I was hangry. Tried the risotto which was delightful but I reacted and I don’t have a clue why? It wouldn’t have wheat in it? Loved Dijon market much better.
Cassie G — Google review
The store offers a good selection of different type of food. Saucisson de Lyon Brioché is one of my favourites. We arrived a bit late and thought the stores won’t close until 4pm but most stores closed before 3pm. So we didn’t get chance to explore more and rushed to pick a few items and left. The few items we picked turned out to be a bit pricey comparing to hotel’s buffet breakfast. There is a lot of paid parking available and the parking fee is quite reasonable. Will I come back again next time in Lyon? Maybe.
Joyce L — Google review
Fantastic market with many providers of fine French food. We had a petit dejeuner at La Fer and it was very nice. Pastry came later. Not too crowded early, but the vibe much better later in the day.
Ross — Google review
It’s designed mostly for tourists. Working hours: by 1pm a lot of places were closed. I personally would recommend getting oysters (I also loved their Bullot) at Maison Pupier (Oyster bar) with better prices (you can even order 1 of each oyster kind) and service compared to Chez Antonin (where I got a rude waitress with super expensive oysters that don’t even taste good). Another recommendation is to get lyonnaise delicacy - red praliné tart at Seve (yes it’s expensive).

In Cuisine is a hidden gem located in the vast Place Bellecour, offering a foodie paradise beyond its small facade. The bookshop boasts over 4,000 cookbooks and features a delicatessen, kitchen utensil boutique, and fully equipped culinary workshop for both adults and kids. Additionally, it houses an airy cafe serving tea, coffee, cakes all day and offers one of the best lunch deals in town.
I stopped in because I saw a simple cook book for students in the window, and I thought my French speaking college student would enjoy it. I ended up staying for a drink of water; in this case it was infused with cucumber and other refreshing flavors. Lovely ambiance!

This is a great concept, it’s a bookstore that specializes in cookbooks and offers cooking classes. Store: 5 stars - they had a great selection Class: 2.5 stars for the food itself and 1 star because the teacher was rude to me I went in with a tour group and the dishes themselves were not good, it was chicken breast, no skin, baked and it was so so so very dry. The gravy was interesting to see, the mashed potatoes were silky. The starter was a cream cheese mixed with herbs and shallots and honestly, I didn’t need a class to learn that. The dessert was simple, it was cooked fruit with cream that I was never clear how the fruit was cooked and and the cream was not taught. The caramel was taught. I may be spoiled from my experience in Cooking with Class in Paris where everything was so organized and the end product was technically perfectly done (took the choux pastry and macarons class). Even their equipment were so perfectly organized, even the scissors were in the correct and perfect place when it was time to cut the piping bag. This felt unprofessional, frantic and the dishes were way too simple. Simple and still not good at the end of it! Speaking to the point where the chef/teacher was rude. I subtlety pointed out that there were not enough places for the number of students, my son didn’t have a space. And the way she spoke to me was unnecessarily impolite and she did it in front of a whole class of people I didn’t know. It seemed like she took it personally that I pointed out that she made a mistake, she claimed that one person was to be positioned at the stove and that’s why they didn’t have the one chopping board and knife so everyone had the same tools. (All the knives were not uniformed either, some were pairing and some were for meat) In any case, the WAY she spoke, I felt insulted, she was mean spirited and meant to humiliate. And why not just buy one more chopping board or only allow the correct number of people to equipment. Don’t cover up your mistake by being defensive about your mistake. She never made it clear from the beginning that one person was meant to not have the equipment everyone else had. (But I did go to the bathroom before the class started I might have missed it. She still could have respectfully reminded instead of being punitive.) It was a shame because the store was very cute and I loved that it was focused on French cookbooks. I would have come to this store and browsed even without the class. I found a reference book for charcuterie I wanted and an aroma box, like in the movie French Kiss. The aroma box was around €375 and on Amazon it was around $475. The words were in French but I still wanted it, as I’m practicing my French anyway. My husband would have loved it and it’s his birthday the following month. I was really contemplating getting it but I had to resist. If my dollar or my euro is the only thing I can make a statement with, then I couldn’t condone the disrespect so I left it behind for that reason and bought a €5 item instead.

Absolutely loved this place, and the service was more than lovely. Lunch was delicious, fresh and decently priced, and I was able to stay to read my book over a cup of tea afterwards. Thank you ❤️

My wife and I went to this place wanting to buy a book or two about the art or cuisine and ended up staying for lunch (and buying books, lol) since it was so nice and people are very welcoming. The price is very reasonable and the food quality is amazing! 👏 I highly recommend this place.

Super meal in a place you'd usually expect tourist trap fare. The service was nice, and the starter was probably one of the heartiest concoctions I've ever had. It was cooked to perfection and it was like an orchestra of flavour. Can't give it five stars because we visited them in the busiest weekend of the year and we were restricted to a set menu. But I'll return to see and try food from their a la carte menu when I go back to Lyon.

Located in Bellecour, Le Rooftop offers a unique and stunning view of Lyon's rooftops. The atmosphere is great for enjoying sunset cocktails while taking in the scenery. The service is impeccable, and the dishes are delicious from start to finish. Guests can savor revisited French classics at this polished old-timer, such as veal sweetbreads with truffle-laced mashed potato and Grand Marnier-flambeed crepes suzette.
We only had drinks at the bar and therefore cannot comment on the food. The view from the Rooftop was great and we really enjoyed the drinks we had there. Axelle, Camille and Fanny were welcoming, gave great suggestions of drinks and explained the local food culture which was illuminating.

(Translated by Google) Superb terrace, that’s undeniable. The cuisine is fine and the service pleasant, although a little long. Nice choice of Mules cocktails and very successful dessert. I was less convinced by the vegetarian main course. I understand that the choice of products is made in an ethical and ecological state of mind, I find that very respectable but it is just a shame not to control the air conditioning for these same reasons because we receive currents of cold air up to on the terrace.

We had a free shot at the end of the meal as a gift and the meal cost us €105 for two cocktails, a starter and two main courses. The view is very nice on the terrace! It's a shame because you lose a star because of this problem otherwise overall it was very good 😊😊 (Original) Le cadre vraiment rien à dire magnifique avec cette vu incroyable 😻 La nourriture est vraiment très bonne du plat au dessert bravo Mais juste dommage pour le service très long alors qu’il n’y avait pas forcément beaucoup de monde de plus le monsieur il était un petit peu hautain je trouve pour ce type de cadre à éviter !
