Nestled amidst scenic walking trails leading to the Peak District, The Bowling Green Steakhouse stands out as a beloved local gem in Ashbourne. This inviting establishment combines the charm of a traditional pub with a steakhouse flair, featuring rustic wooden beams and picturesque views of Derbyshire's rolling hills. Guests can savor hearty meals that nourish both body and spirit, whether dining indoors or enjoying the fresh air in the beer garden.
Best customer service in England so far, never seen such well-mannered young staff working in a restaurant. Staff knew the menu very well, and the suggestions were amazing. The food was delicious and fresh. Portions are quite big. We requested a small candle for a birthday, something that is not on the menu. The waitress came with the cake singing happy birthday. How nice and lovely! Thank you to the management for having such a lovely team and a great chef!

Very nice small restaurant. We came there without booking on Sunday evening and staff found a table for us. I ordered lamb shank, which was perfectly tender with mash potatoes and vegetables. My wife took rib eye stake, which was the best that we had for a long time travelling around the country. Lovely chocolate brownies for desert. Definitely recommend!!!
Igors D — Google review
My partner and I rang up to book a table late on bank holiday Sunday and luckily they squeezed us in. First time visiting and it is a lovely setting a small restaurant, it doesn't have much branding on the outside but looks like they have a lot of regulars! Staff were lovely prices were very reasonable and the food was lush! Good portion sizes too! My only quarrel is that the steak cheese burger I had said it was American cheese but it was more of a sauce (see in my photo) than a cheese slice which wasn't to my taste but that is more of a preference and just something I thought I'd make people aware of. Lovely restaurant!

Great place to visit for really good food. As a party of 10 with 4 children we were well served. A range of orders all eaten with virtually 10 empty plates. Well worth the time visiting and eating. Really good service and yes there is waiting time but expect that when served good food.
Ian R — Google review
Impromptu visit to Ashbourne and ended up here on a Sunday and managed to bag a table. The roast beef was amazing, took its time to come out but worth the wait although my beef was a little too pink for my liking but overall very tasty and good variety of veg and extras. Value for money. The burger was huge and more cheese than expected and the chips were unusual shaped but delicious. Service was a bit slow and not really any atmosphere but would visit again as the food was worth it.
Will C — Google review
Went for a Sunday meal for lunch. The food is made fresh although it was a bit of a wait roughly 30-45 for 3 dishes. The food was alright but it lacked the flavour. The meal isnt relatively cheap hence expected more flavour for what we paid The Sunday veg nut loaf was okay, would have preferred some more veg and potatoes, the nut loaf itself was a bit bland The burger was okay but that too missed the mark. The beer'd fish was the best dish out of the 3

We stayed in stables ashbourne so we had our dinner and breakfast there. The breakfast there was amazing, I had a real crispy beacon eventually in UK. The pancake was also firm and smell nice with egg flavor. Their dinner was interesting. The starter, the pork belly bites, were good. Smell sweet and sour, and honey sweet in mouth. The chips and rocket salad outperformed the steaks. The v shape cut of chips brought extra crispness and the seasoning for the salad covered the spiciness of the rocket salad. But the 33 pound medium rare prime cut fillet was a bit chewy. If it lands on this price range, we would expect something tender. The sirlon was still very wet on the surface, likely not rest enough. The lemon tart had not flavor of lemon. The crust part of the lemon was a bit raw. The worst part was the raspberry jam on the tart that overrides any lemon taste, if there was any. Personally, I am not fan of cream brulee with too much fruit on it. Again, it override the original taste of the cream brulee itself.

Walked in on a random Wednesday evening without a booking pretty late on. We were welcomed, quickly served and had the most delicious meal. I had the steakhouse burger and honestly, can’t stop thinking about it 😂 it was the tastiest burger I’ve ever eaten! Thanks to the whole team for a great meal!

Nestled in the heart of Ashbourne, Lamplight Restaurant Ltd is a delightful family-run establishment that invites you to step back in time. Originally constructed as a coach house in 1493, this charming venue boasts original wooden beams and exposed stone walls, creating an intimate atmosphere perfect for enjoying innovative Anglo-French cuisine. Whether you're dining by the cozy fireplace indoors or soaking up the sun on the outdoor terrace, Lamplight offers a memorable culinary experience after exploring Derbyshire's scenic beauty.
Second time we have been here. Really good food. The dishes have been carefully selected to offer that often overlooked balance that adds so much to each mouthful. It’s not pretentious, just the right atmosphere, with good staff who aren’t intrusive, but still attentive. Portion sizes are generous. Highly recommended.

Still going, again and again, as promised; this remains the stand-out best place to eat (IMHO) in Ashbourne! Excellent; no other word for it! Despite living locally for some time, we have never dined here - regretting that now!! One of the best dinning experiences for some considerable time. The interior looks fresh and modern; the staff are utterly professional in everything they do (well trained / very experienced); the food is exceptional in flavour, presentation, and is delivered on hot plates; finally, the menu is seasonal, so expect the dishes to change - Spring, Summer, and Autumn. As I always say: get yourself along, whether local or just passing through … I know we’ll be going again, and again! 😉
David D — Google review
We dined at The Lamplight this evening and it was just perfect. We have been quite a few times over many years, definitely want to make it a more regular occasion. The welcome on arrival was lovely and we were attended to straight away. The food was beautiful as was the service. It's a traditional restaurant that is not rushed.

Restaurant situated right in the centre of Ashbourne. Parking available in several places nearby. Not wheelchair or pushchair accessible as the property has steps at entrance. Small seasonal menu. Small wine list. Service was good, very friendly and helpful staff member. Nice decor, cosy and romantic atmosphere and lovely window seating. Starters, mains and deserts are all fixed prices with the exception of the odd supplement charge, prices are very reasonable. Good portion sizes. Food was nice throughout the 3 courses we ordered. Nice local restaurant.
LYNDA C — Google review
Beautiful food served in a lovely old building. If is a very quiet restaurant with a calm atmosphere so possibly not everyone’s choice. Great interesting vegetarian options.

Out for a meal with 2 friends . There should have been 4 of us : he defo missed out. Lovely setting , good food and lovely waitresses . The menu changes every month… so photos are from the August 22 menu . Bit of a treck for us to go from Stoke but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend ( already have actually)

Loved this place. The dining area has a spectacular wall to wall window which just draws the eye. It has a boutique feel about. The Staff were excellent the food was fantastic. I had the Coconut and Macadamia crusted salmon and it was beautifully presented and tasted even better. Well done guys 👍

Fish and chips takeaway
Fast food restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Ashbourne, the Market Place Fish & Chip Restaurant is a charming spot that perfectly captures the essence of traditional English dining. With its cozy interior and a few outdoor tables, it offers an inviting atmosphere for families and visitors alike. The menu boasts classic fish and chips featuring crispy haddock or cod served alongside fluffy chips and mushy peas, making it an ideal choice for those craving comfort food.
Visited this afternoon after reading other reviews, and it was awesome. We had two regular cod and chips, one with beans and one with gravy. Good size portions, plenty of beans and gravy, and perfect crispy batter. £9.95 each, which is cheaper than a takeaway by us. Perfect.
Michael K — Google review
We came as a family of 4 with 12 & 10 yo kids. We ordered 1 large & 2 regular haddock & chips, and a battered sausage & chips. The large and 1 one regular went unfinished as the portions were really generous. We came at 1230 and it was full in the cafe with people also sitting outside, but service was fast and super friendly. Lots of regulars were coming in for the OAP special, too! Would highly recommend.
Chris L — Google review
Amazing quality. Staying at a local hotel as a group of 6 and read the reviews on this restaurant. I would easily say this was the best fish and chips I have had, huge portions, low price but top quality, not just the food but the staff too. We all enjoyed it that much we went back the second night for dinner and can say we will be coming back next year on our annual Alton towers trip.

Nathan M — Google review
Ordered online for collection, but on arrival they didn't seem to know what was happening with our order, so waited for it to be put together. Medium cod a fair bit smaller than what we'd expect, and the chips weren't very nice. Onion rings undercooked, soft and squishy, so that made them even oilier than onion rings would be anyway, they went in the bin. Staff not overly friendly either, so quite a disappointment overall.
Pamela — Google review
Update on my last review a few months ago from a 4 star to a 5 star. Very nice cod and chips, but note to ones self preffered the gravy my son had to my curry sauce (although still nice). Nice chips, curry sauce and excellent gravy. We also had the haddock and cod and this was OK.

We had lunch here today. Fish and chips were lovely (my wife reckons possibly the best she has ever had - i wouldn't go that far but they were good). Service was very good. Couldn't be more helpful. Highly recommended.

Indian restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Ashbourne, near the serene banks of Henmore Brook, Red Chilli Ashbourne is a delightful dining destination that showcases both classic and lesser-known regional Indian and Bangladeshi dishes. This stylish restaurant offers a contemporary atmosphere where guests can savor fresh ingredients and vibrant flavors that set it apart from more traditional eateries. Whether you choose to dine in its inviting space or opt for takeout to enjoy at your holiday cottage, you're sure to have an unforgettable culinary experience.
We stopped by here on our way home from a visit and were really glad we did. Ahmed looked after us and he was fantastic – very attentive, friendly, and welcoming. He had such a happy, positive energy that made us feel comfortable straight away. We were unfortunately very tired from travelling, otherwise we’d have loved to have a proper chat with him! The restaurant itself was tidy, beautifully set out, and had a really nice atmosphere. The food was delicious, full of flavour, and came at very good prices for the quality. It’s clear a lot of care goes into both the service and the dishes. A great place to stop for a meal – highly recommend :)

Was staying locally and went on a Monday night. Food was excellent; Poppadoms, Tardka deal, Mix Veg Bujia, Naans, Tandoori Roti and Mixed kebab starter. With bonus of take your own alcohol. It's a shame we live in Leicester as would return here often. In Leicester the food (no matter where we have been) contains too much masala and too much salt. I am Punjabi and enjoy my spice, but too often the restaurant food goes through me, as a result we only eat out if invited out. Red Chilli was flavourful, spiced just under what I normally have (no bad thing), good portions with large naan and roti. The masala did not linger in me for days after. For a random Monday night, there were a few people eating in, with a busy takeaway.
Gurj M — Google review
We had an absolutely delicious meal here last night. Fresh flavours and nicely presented. Ahmed attended to us. He was so professional and friendly, he made us feel very welcome. Great service all round. Luckily we found this stylish restaurant by chance, despite the road/pavement closures. We would definitely recommend this restaurant, it's a real treat! Unfortunately we are not local, but when we are next in the area, we will be back for another treat. Thanks again Red Chilli 5 🌟 🤩
Lisa P — Google review
Great food. You can taste all the fresh spices. Friendly guys working there. Stunning table dressing.
K — Google review
Surprisingly decent! The food was freshly prepared and pleasantly better than expected for a random spot in Ashbourne. That said, all the mains were missing salt—we had to season them ourselves. Also, while they advertise serving alcohol, it’s limited to bottled beer and wine (no spirits or draft options). Still, a good experience overall.

Restaurant
The George & Dragon is a charming family-run pub located in the heart of Ashbourne. The grand exterior with Saint George mounted on a rearing horse makes it easily recognizable. Inside, the pub offers a warm and inviting atmosphere with a generous range of Derbyshire beers and local fare. Guests can enjoy their meal by the open fire inside or opt for outdoor seating to watch life pass by under Saint George.
We had Sunday lunch here today. Our 3 children have additonal needs and the staff were absolutely fantastic catering for their needs. Our youngest is a restrictive eater but the staff separated every item of food to ensure she could happily eat everything. Little touches like this make it much easier for us as a family to eat out. The food was also fantastic and I would recommend that everyone comes here for a meal. Thanks to all the staff for their help.
UKCK S — Google review
We received a warm welcome from really friendly and helpful staff, the choice on the menu was exceptional. Really large portions!! Homecooked food, prepared and served to perfection. The chef, Andy, came to check if we were happy with everything. Highly recommend this friendly pub!
David G — Google review
Amazing food with generous portions. I highly recommend the cheesy chips and the huge roast dinners on a Sunday as well. Great staff and the pub is dog friendly too. We are regular locals and love coming here.
Sarah M — Google review
I have never laughed so hard and received such good service in one venue. Harley is an absolute legend behind the bar, fun, great knowledge, great recommendations, gave us a fair warning on food portion sizes and we went for it. This is most generously portioned food I have ever seen. Harley filled the wine up to the absolute brim, the chef, for pure bants brought out a chalkboard with the dessert selection to accompany our monstrous food order. Absolute 10/10 I wish this were my local
Niccy L — Google review
I dined here a few times recently, having a pasta dish from the specials board and, on the other evenings, fish and chips. The food was excellent and the servings were generous. The staff were friendly and the service was prompt. A pub with plenty of character and a pleasant ambience.
Dovegirl — Google review
Fantastic Pub Grub and Great Service Visited the George and Dragon recently and had one of the best pub meals we’ve had in a long time. The food was spot on – the chips were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned. The mushroom bread was hearty, filling and absolutely delicious. We had the lamb and beef pies, both of which were generously filled with rich meat and came with plenty of gravy – exactly how a proper pie should be. The beef burgers were juicy, full of flavour, and cooked just right. The service was excellent – friendly, attentive, and relaxed. The pub itself has loads of character and a really welcoming atmosphere. Considering the quality and portion sizes, it was great value for money. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back. Actually, it was so nice we went back next day for Sunday roast, and it was AMAZING...Mmmmmmmm.
Peter M — Google review
This is going to be the weirdest review I’ve ever done but I got to do it. We were in this place yesterday for lunch (we were the tourists by the window) and I must apologise to the lads who were working because one of them had to come to us like 3 times before we have finally decided what to eat. We didn’t mean to be rude, here what happened: my wife’s period has been late all week and we couldn’t take it anymore. There was a pharmacy close to this place and we decided to go there and buy a pregnancy test. When we got to The George & Dragon she went to the bathroom and did the test right there (I told you this was going to be weird). The test was positive. We are going to be mom and dad! So yeah…we weren’t really focused on choosing what to eat and took forever to order our food. Our apologies, hope you guys understand. The food was delicious, the lads were awesome and the place is beautiful and had a great vibe to it. I’m going to tell our child we knew about him/her on a place called The George & Dragon…THE GEORGE & DRAGON! How cool is that?? 😎 We may never go to this place ever again…but I can guarantee that this Portuguese couple will never forget about it ❤️

Nice town pub, with very well prepared and presented food, good variety including options for vegetarians. The Goat’s cheese on flat bread was tasty, the salad very fresh and the home style chips delicious. Nice ale too, recommend after a jaunt in the Peak District!

Quaint English pub in the middle of Ashbourne. Food is exceptional for the price and brags excellent pub lunches. Clean and tidy interior with a log burner fireplace. Staff friendly and helpful. They have a lot of great lunchtime deals which is good, but be careful, be aware, I was nearly charged full price for two meals within a deal meal menu. There is also an on street eating and drinking area and a beer garden. Well worth a visit

This cozy eatery offers generous portions of fish and chips that are both delicious and affordable, making it a fantastic choice for those looking to indulge without breaking the bank. Visited Ashbourne fish bar tonight whilst here on holiday. Fish, chips and mushy peas twice! Absolutely delightful! Fish was huge, chips lovely and mushy peas perfect. Price was good too! We bought the same meal elsewhere just over a week ago and paid £22.....only cost £16 for tonights fish supper 😁. Lady that served my husband is an asset to the business, extremely pleasant and polite.

We have spent a week in Ashbourne and used the Fish Bar twice. The food was absolutely amazing and very plentiful, more than I could eat normally, but because of the quality I made a pig of myself. Very friendly staff. I would recommend this place to anyone Barry & Jennifer from Kent
Barry I — Google review
We don't like leaving negative reviews but then we have to be honest here. Firstly the apron of the staff member serving was disgusting. It was filthy & looked like it hadn't been washed in over a week. Flies were swirling around in the air in the customer waiting area. Ultra violet fly zappers aren't that expensive surely! The fried food wasn't the most pleasant either & even the freshly cooked haddock was very greasy - in comparison to many other places we've been to. On a positive note: the pukka pie was ok. 😉 🥧
Marrach P — Google review
Hubby and I had the Ashbourne special, which is fish, chips, a small sausage and a choice of sauce. Firstly the girl behind the counter and the guy cooking spent a lot of time squabbling like school kids, not a great first impression but what really let it down was the fish, I had mine with peas and whilst I like a good amount, it was drowning in them. The fish had no flavour and the batter and chips were extremely soggy with all the peas! This place also has a 1 star hygiene rating which I didn't realise until after eating. Would not return I'm afraid.
Amanda H — Google review
Ashbourne is a fine town to visit, though overall quite expensive. The fish bar is a good affordable alternative. We found it clean, liked the friendly staff and thought it was a good menu. I've had better fish and chips, but I've had worse as well. It's very near the bus station. Very convenient for central Ashbourne.

Not going to lie - I don’t think I’ve ever set foot in Dalo’s without first frequenting some local ale houses first 4*s for their ability to understand my ramblings at the end of an evening and for providing hot food. Menu is as you would expect and prices are reasonable for the portion size you get. Burgers are generous in size as are the chip portions. Ample seating available. Pizzas take a little time to prepare but are value for money. It’s not gourmet dining by any standard but the staff are friendly and there is a delivery service if you so require.

After a day at Alton Towers we ended up stopping here for a quick takeaway. The guy who served us was really welcoming and friendly. Ordered a kebab with chips and the meal was delicious! Lots of food and it was made with really high quality ingredients too. Good value for money and the next time I'm in the area I wouldn't hesitate to go back and order again.

Called here on way home from day at Alton towers. Would recommend to any passing visitors. Friendly welcome, all food freshly prepared and tasty. We had pizza and it was delicious.

Excellent service and food, had mixed kebab, chips and pepperoni pizza Kebab was a good size chicken, lamb & Donna meat with salad and sauce of your choice. Pepperoni pizza was really good the sauce was lovely and tasty with plenty of cheese.

Best pizza in the area, delivery on time, tika pizza with peperoni and ground beef, cooked to perfection 👌🏻

The chicken is absolutely stupendous and only costs around £3-£5. The owner is incredibly nice and welcoming. My only complaint is that the chips are sometimes soggy instead of crispy but that can be fixed by a lot of salt

I was quite disappointed with my visit. I wanted to support a local business after having used the rival pizza place a couple of doors down. Cash only so came prepared. I do genuinely feel that regulars who came in after me were served before me, especially after they saw me waiting after those regulars had gone and had to recheck my order. When I got home and checked my ham and mushroom pizza, the top was a little overdone and the food was actually quite bland. I don't think I'll go back although maybe I'll try a kebab one day.

As others have said, food is really fresh, large portions for a reasonable price, food temperature is super hot too so it travels well. I concur, it may well be one of the best in the country, the guys are super friendly too Many thanks, thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

This casual counter-serve chain offers a variety of options for customizing sandwiches and salads, emphasizing healthy choices. With an extensive range of breads and fillings, along with additional menu items like salads, the shop caters to a diverse clientele. They also provide a good selection of beverages. While it can get busy during lunch hours due to nearby secondary school students, the service remains efficient and quick. The staff is notably friendly and attentive, maintaining a clean establishment.
Great little subway store in the town with takeaways and eat in seating area. My favourite items are the salad boxes which are so healthy and full of nutrients. I always get double meat to make it high protein. I get all the salad and the extras, such as chilli, seeds, etc. Sauce wise I loved the chilli sauce on the steak so you can pretend you are having a dirty kebab, or the pesto and new green spicey one is nice. Staff are always helpful and friendly. Good offers on the app.

Great selection of breads & fillings. Salads and other options available. Good range of drinks available. Suitable for kids / families Can get busy during lunchtimes due to local secondary school children but service is quick and efficient. Very friendly staff and a very clean unit. A lot better than some subways. Worth checking the closing times before visiting as it’s not open late into the evening like some city stores.

Two lovely women served me. 6th August around 1pm. Great customer service, so friendly and made my sandwich exactly as I asked etc. They are an excellent addition to your subway team x
