Japanese confectionery shop
Fukusaya is a renowned confectionery in Nagasaki, known for its delicious castella cake. The recipe for this sponge cake was introduced to the city by a Portuguese merchant, and it has since become a local specialty. The historical influence of European merchants in Nagasaki ensured that ingredients like flour and sugar were more readily available here than in other parts of Japan, contributing to the development of unique culinary delights.
Tasty castella カステラ from 1624. Nice to try a piece of history. Crunchy sugar at the bottom. So good!
David T — Google review
¥324 for two pieces of golden brick. It is yummy. Not sweet and very light. Just amazing to pair with bitter coffee or strong tea, please enjoy while watching your weight.

Got the classic Castella as it’s a Nagasaki specialty, ate it on the Shinkansen. Thought it was nice but nothing special. It’s basically a sponge cake. It goes well with coffee.
Eda K — Google review
Not bad, but nothing special. Sweet and not too dry.
Tan T — Google review
Great service , the staff here also put on a plastic cover during raining days to keep your cake away from the rain. Very thoughtful.
David C — Google review
Supposedly one of the better castella cake brands amongst the many others in this region

(Translated by Google) Nagasaki has a wide variety of castella shops. They are called the three major Fukusaya, Bunmeido, and Shooken. If you're wondering what to eat, just go to the Amu side of Nagasaki Station or Kamedo Market, and you'll find a lot of them, so it's a good idea to buy a small piece and try it out! Fukusaya is soft and moist. It tastes sweeter Bunmeido's bread is less sweet thanks to the sugar particles at the bottom, and only the bottom pieces are moist. It's delicious. There's no question of what's best, but unlike Korea, it's individually wrapped so it's easy to eat one by one without drying out, and it's moist and doesn't clog your throat, making it a really good bread to eat haha. They say Nagasaki is famous for its castella, so everyone should try it!!

Bunmeido Main Store is a renowned bakery in Nagasaki, Japan, known for its specialty Castella cakes. The store has been around since 1900 and is considered one of the best places to try this Nagasaki specialty brought by Portuguese merchants in the 16th century. The main shop offers a rich and heavy version of Castella, unlike others in the market, along with fruit jelly and various cake variations.
I was actually very surprised at how much I enjoyed the castella (カステラ) cake. This place has it in spades. I didn’t go anywhere else, so there could be others out there that are better, but hot dang these were good. The building is cool and it’s obviously very popular in the area. Get yo self a treat and enjoy.

It’s a little bit sweet, but if you prepare nice coffee or Japanese green tea that will make you a prefect afternoon. Hard to choose one from original, matcha and coffee. Few hours struggle, I pick original flavor! Good choice!

Their cakes were ok but not their service.... It has been great after travelling for more than a week in this region, the friendly people we meet during our self-drive,the places we had our meals in,the shop we patronise along the way but,not this shop. We didn't feel welcome at all... And the thing is: there wasn't even any people in the shop when we stepped in that afternoon.... (probably it's the weather 🤷🏻‍♀️) We actually intend to buy more as gifts after reading great reviews about their castle cakes but....well, there's always other stuff which can substitute for this...I guess sorry, good luck...
Seah M — Google review
I bought 2 slices to try out before deciding which brand to buy for gifting. The Bunmeido Castella cake is the best in my opinion. In terms of taste, It is lighter & less sweet than Fukusaya & Shooken. Each slice is wrapped in a Dorayaki layer. I bought them in 9 June & the expiry date is on 22 June.
Isabella T — Google review
Contrary to renowned and long-established fame of the store, I was shocked by unfriendliness of the staff. The castella cake is undoubtedly delicious, but the staff are not providing good service. This time I bought a box of matcha cake. It tasted good also.

history makes this shop popular than taste. of course it is enough to try once. the chewy texture is attractive. it's not so soft like other mass product kastera.

In the 16th century, the Portuguse reached southern Japan and soon started trade and missionary work. Nagasaki was then the only Japanese port open for foreign commerce. The Portuguese introduced many then-unusual things, such as guns, tobacco, pumkins and  the castella  cake. In the Edo period in part due to the cost of sugar, castella was an expensive dessert to make despite the ingredients sold by the Portuguese. When the Emperor of Japan`s envoy  envoy was invited, the Tokugawa Shotgunate  was presented the Castella.. Over the years, its taste changed to suit Japanese palates. To day, Castella cakes are sold in Nagasaki supermarkets, gifts and souvenir shops. There are so many varieties of Castella cakes. Try it when you are in Nagasaki. It is very YUMMY.

Shooken Honten is a historic and classic bakery in Nagasaki known for its outstanding Gosanyaki Castella. The sponge cake is made with more egg yolk and sugar than traditional castella, resulting in a richer color and sweeter taste. The sponges are finer and moister, with a honey-yellow center sandwiched between a golden-brown surface and a bottom sprinkled with sugar crystals.
This is the tip of the Nagasaki castellaberg (sponge cake to the rest of us). The cake is sublime, especially the lemon variety, with lemon zest giving it a flowery aroma. And the coffee is their own blend, sublimely rich with overtones of chocolate. But the prize is the store interior, made up like an old-style European coffee shop, and superb service that will even laugh at your lame jokes, that is how pleasant they are.
Wisterian W — Google review
Stepping into Shooken is like stepping through a portal to 17th-century Japan, where the air is thick with the scent of history and the sweet promise of Castella, a dessert that has been perfected over 344 years. Established in 1681 in Nagasaki, this legendary confectionery is not just a restaurant but a living testament to culinary artistry, and my visit here was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, the ambiance enveloped us in a serene embrace. The traditional Japanese architecture, with its elegant simplicity, whispered tales of the Edo era, while the warm, welcoming staff made us feel like honored guests in a bygone time. Nestled near the historic Megane-bashi bridge, Shooken’s location is as much a part of its charm as its storied past, offering a perfect respite after a day of exploring Nagasaki’s rich cultural tapestry. But the true star of the show was, of course, the Castella—the famous sponge cake that has made Shooken a household name among dessert aficionados. We opted for a tasting of their signature varieties: the classic, the matcha, and the chocolate, each a masterpiece in its own right. The classic Castella was a revelation—fluffy yet dense, with a golden crust that gave way to a moist, airy interior. The subtle sweetness, punctuated by the delightful crunch of zarame sugar crystals at the base, was a symphony of textures and flavors that danced on the palate. It was clear why this recipe, honed since the days of Shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa, is considered one of Nagasaki’s “Big Three” Castellas.
Keith S — Google review
Castella cake is not bad. Original is airier while chocolate one is more dense. Nagasaki orange juice is a little too sweet.
Randy N — Google review
*Gosanyaki Castella 五三焼カステラ🌟 Gosanyaki castella was the real standout. “Gosanyaki” means they use more egg yolk and sugar than traditional castella for a richer color and sweeter taste. The sponges were indeed much finer and moister. Honey yellow in the center, sandwiched between the golden brown surface and the bottom sprinkled with sugar crystals. The velvety and moist sponge cake was gently sweet from the malty syrup. *Matcha Chestnut Castella 渋皮栗寄せ抹茶カステラ They use Hoshino Yame Matcha (星野奥八女), a ceremonial grade matcha from Fukuoka, to craft this seasonal special flavor. The premium matcha gave the castella a deep umami taste, while the smashed chestnut subtly layered up the textures. *Shooken Castella 松翁軒カステラ A duo set of two classic castella flavors, original and chocolate. The castella was apparently less delicate than the gosanyaki one, which somehow remind me of a finer version of butter pound cake. *Lemon Cake レモンケーキ The lemon shape was so cute. It was actually similar to madelaine topped with a lemon-y glaze. What really surprised us was that there were lemon peels studded in the cake.
Ruby C — Google review
Delicious castella cake (egg, milk and sugar). A nice little cafe to enjoy the authentic taste of castella. There was a limited Sakura flavour for the coming Sakura season and an extra rich chocolate flavour for winter

Nagasaki Minami Yamate Pudding is a charming shop located near the famous Glover Gardens, offering a delightful selection of puddings in various flavors. The pudding jars make for great souvenirs, and the shop itself has an appealing aesthetic. Customers highly recommend the stained glass pudding, made with real vanilla bean, as one of the best they've ever had. The soft cream topping adds to its perfection.
Fortunately, when we were in the area, there were no crowds. We would have loved to try the sweet potato pudding, but it was already sold out. Still, the option we chose with soft-serve ice cream was good (we don’t remember the name). If you’re in the area, get your stomach ready because it’s full of delicious treats!

Delicious pudding and soft serve. Matcha flavour was great. Chocolate was on the darker and bitter side - I prefer the normal flavour. Benches to sit and free water available.

Delicious pudding and soft cream place in the historical district of Nagasaki. I had the pudding soft cream which was tasty. Pretty competitive street with many sweets shops to choose from.
Greg S — Google review
I tried their matcha pudding. The pudding had vanilla bean seed inside😍 the matcha flavor was very strong it can be overpowering the taste of the pudding. This thing can be very filling. For its price, I personally think it is a bit overhyped. But it is still oretty good regardless.
Esther — Google review
When I say that this was the best pudding I have had in Japan, it is not a hyperbole. I am actually very sad and regretful that I only got one. I should have gotten another one after my tour around Glover Garden. If you’re in Nagasaki, make sure to try this. I’d choose this over the castella cakes.
Elijah E — Google review
I’m half way through my matcha pudding but had to put it down to give a five star review. This pudding is silky smooth, custardy and I don’t know how to explain it but you can just feel the freshness of the ingredients. The matcha is so strong, made for matcha lovers, and tasting only the pudding below I wish I could try their entire selection. This pudding is legit.

If you find yourself wandering through Nagasaki, make sure to stop by New York dō, a charming dessert shop that has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1945. This quaint spot specializes in Western-style tarts, cakes, and their signature soft ice cream. The founder's unique background—having cooked for General Motors staff before returning to Japan—adds an interesting twist to the menu.
Moat delicious ice cream and cake! Super rich and tasty vanilla flavour. Service was great, friendly people!
Elanne B — Google review
visited this place because of social media. staff was really kind, even with limited english, she tried to explain to us about her castella and how to heat it in the microwave etc. we got the strawberry ice cream castella (350yen) which was really good. basically a sandwich ice cream. she did tell us the strawberry is frozen but the ice cream is fresh. also, a 200 yen castella edge (scraps of castella cake so there’ll be uneven layers). the store basically sells just these 2 variations of castella cake. tbh the castella cake tastes similar to others but with the ice cream- that was a game changer. there’s also a vending machine for it outside of the store if you don’t want human interaction. overall, a fabulous experience, do give the ice cream castella a go if you’re around the area.

Nice little western dessert shop in Nagasaki. Features tarts, pies and ice cream with seasonal fruits. The founder apparently cooked for General Motors staff before returning to Japan and bringing American dessert styles back. The signature dish is the Nagasaki Castella Ice Cream Biscuit which is only sold until 5pm.

The weather was nice and I walked a lot, so I definitely had a milkshake! I headed for this shop with great enthusiasm, Hakusuido, which sells sweets in the front and has a cafe in the back. Perhaps because the temperature was so high, even though it was late in the evening, customers were arriving one after another, and the place seemed busy. The staff members who came from other countries did a really good job in the busy store😊 My long-awaited milkshake was quite big and I was satisfied. By the end, I had gotten really cold, so I had some hot tea and headed home. It's located near the arcade in town, so it's easy to access. Izumiya is a renowned unagi restaurant in Japan, where eel is considered a delicacy and expertly grilled over charcoal by skilled chefs. It's popular year-round but especially in the summer to combat the heat. Visitors stumbled upon this hidden gem while exploring Nagasaki's Chinatown and were pleasantly surprised by the exceptional unagi dishes. Additionally, Izumiya offers other local specialties like castella cakes, kakuni manju, and champon as souvenirs.

(Translated by Google) I visited this place when my mother and I went sightseeing in Nagasaki. It was a very disappointing experience, although the foreign craftsman castella was very delicious in a beautiful wooden building. I believe that if you pay 600 yen (the cost of the castella itself is about 200 yen), you can have it in the eat-in space inside the store, but it was a surprisingly disappointing experience. At first, considering the price, I thought they would make drinks to go with the castella. However, in reality, it was a self-service Nespresso and tea in a thermal plastic bottle, just like you would find in a typical office. My mother and I were shocked to see the inferior drinks. My mother and I were complaining that it was so disappointing and stingy, and the ladies sitting next to us were also very sympathetic. I feel like I'm being narrow-minded, but considering that the cost of a cafe latte at a convenience store is 200 yen, I couldn't help but wonder what the difference in price of 400 yen was for this service. I may have had high expectations based on the image of using a cafe, but I felt that the cost cutting of the drink service lowered the value of a long-established castella shop. I thought it would be better if there was no drink service. Despite the delicious castella and stylish interior, it was a very disappointing experience. I think you'll be more satisfied if you can have a cup of latte or coffee for about 1,000 yen per person. (Translated by Google) Delicious! I bought it at Nagasaki Airport. Growing up in the Kanto region, Bunmeido is a familiar name, and I grew up familiar with its TV commercials and the Bunmeido store in front of the station. I always received Bunmeido's castella or Mikasayama (dorayaki) as gifts, and I also preferred Bunmeido's castella or Mikasayama as gifts. Both were delicious. I remember learning about their delicious castella with granulated sugar on a TV program—I can't remember if it was a travel program or a local area program—so I bought this one at Nagasaki Airport on my way back! Apparently, many shops make castella in Nagasaki, and while driving around, I saw signs for castella and facilities with signs saying "Egg farms dedicated to XX castella." I didn't know anything about castella in Nagasaki, so when I was picking out souvenirs at the airport on my way back, Nagasaki Castella Touan's castella caught my eye. So I decided to buy it. I'd heard of shops frequented by locals, but apparently it's hard to find. Nagasaki Castella Touan's castella cakes come in a variety of sizes and varieties. There were also some stylish sweets on display. However, I bought a large castella cake with granulated sugar as a souvenir and for myself. When I got home and tried it, the first thing that struck me was the color of the dough! It was the color of an egg yolk, almost orange! With one bite, I was hit with the flavor of egg (I could definitely taste the egg) and a gentle sweetness, followed by a light crunch as the granulated sugar crumbled and a rich sweetness...it's amazing. I highly recommend the castella cake with granulated sugar.
