Warung Gula Garam is a charming restaurant located on the main road of Southwest Sumba, conveniently close to Tambolaka Airport. Despite its name, it offers a diverse menu featuring both Western and Indonesian cuisine at reasonable prices. The restaurant is open from 10AM to 10PM, making it an ideal stop after a day of exploring the savannah or relaxing on the beach.
Tambolaka is small city close to the airport, not much choices of proper resto, this is one of them. Food is okay, not so so special. They said pizza is the best, but the owner who prepare the pizza was travelling so it’s not available. Location and ambience is good but waitress was rather rude. One lady that took orders and delivered the food, her eyes were lightened up looking at the foreigners coming in and basically forgetting our request for extra plates etc and even mouthing how busy she was. Not when coming to the other desk with white people though, sweet smile. Perhaps the resto should re-train the staffs to treat all guests equally nice.

Place is dark and when I visit to dine, the lights are off few times. The spaghetti is quiet tasteless for me but the chicken cordon blue is good. Service is good, all the waiters are friendly and we are served well.
Michiko H — Google review
Our Sumban culinary adventure hit a dead end of endless satays and mie gorengs. Hotel recommendations led us to Warung Gula Garam, a name promising a symphony of flavors – French, Italian, Asian, you name it. The reality was decidedly less opulent, though by Sumban standards, it gleamed like a forgotten disco ball. We scored the much fought over kitchen-view seats. Reasonably clean hygiene, despite dimly lit kitchen. A peculiar detail: a large, paint-can-esque container labelled "SERBAGUNA" (all-purpose) sat prominently in the kitchen. Further investigation (purely in the name of hygiene, of course) revealed this to be…margarine. Intriguing… The menu, a delightful jumble of Western comfort food and Indonesian staples, thoughtfully included a disclaimer for our halal friends about the potential presence of pork and lard. Good on them. For refreshments, I chose a banana milkshake – perfectly priced and delicious. Susan, ever the adventurous eater, opted for the capcay. Unfortunately, this "local favorite" turned out to be a fiery love letter to sambal, fish sauce, and peanuts. Two valiant spoonfuls later, it was escorted back to the kitchen. The pizzas, made fresh before our eyes, boasted a certain rustic aroma. The toppings were as Sumbanese as it gets (think suspiciously rubbery pepperoni-ham slices), and the generous flour dusting that occasionally obscured the view of the actual pizza base. A true textural adventure. On a brighter note, we met the owner, Louis, a Frenchman with Portuguese roots. A fascinating fellow who regaled us with the debate of Sumba's untapped goat cheese potential. His lovely wife, the mastermind behind my delightful (though perhaps slightly under-molten) lava cake, also graced us with her presence. Attached to the restaurant is a charming boutique – perfectly priced for lovely posters and wood carvings. The same ones where it would cost you an arm and a leg in Bali. Even had multiple card payment options, one of which allowed me to sport and boast my brand new Livin' Mandiri card! Overall, Warung Gula Garam offered a quirky, if slightly perplexing, dining experience. We'll definitely be back (the kids will insist!), and to Louis, we offer our best wishes – semoga sukses (may you succeed). Perhaps in your goat cheese endeavors!

Amazing place, you’ll eat in a traditional style house. The food is very good and you have a choice of Indonesian food and European food. Prices are reasonable and the waitress speaks very good English!

Looking for a break from hotel food, we ventured to Warung Gula Garam, a cozy spot just 5 minutes from Tambolaka Airport. This place, affectionately known as Warung GG, welcomed us under its charming straw alang-alang roof. The place was quiet, but the atmosphere was pleasant. We casually found our tables and were greeted by a kind lady offering us a menu with a wide range of appetizers and mains. Everything from burgers with plenty of fries to sandwiches, carbonara, Grupa fish from Bali, and local Indonesian delights. After some tough deliberation, I went with the classic Pepperoni Pizza. The owner, Louis, popped out to oversee the kitchen as the ovens roared to life. It was a treat to see them roll the dough and prep fresh ingredients before frisbee-ing them into the oven. Meanwhile, the edamame arrived in a generous portion, fresh enough to peel the lather off each pod. With the Cap Cay for the Ibu, it became the maximum Sayur. Service was prompt, and we had a strategic view into the kitchen. I kept a good eye on the bright neon bucket of Blue Band margarine 🧈. Though it got shuffled around a few times, we were fortunate enough that the spoon never departed the can bucket. Some might say this is silly and nothing to worry about, but we were relieved to not have it whipped into any of our dishes 😂. The pizza was tasty, and we happily shared slices with our kin sitting nearby. So far, so good on the tummy, a few hours later. Louis recommended a chocolate and vanilla dessert, which was a crisp delight that felt almost like a reward for enduring the abrasive heat outside. Warung GG is a great spot for lunch or dinner with a laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff. Quite a reasonable price for dinner for four. Happy to recommend this place to any tourists visiting the Northwest area of Sumba near Tambolaka. You could practically walk from the airport and be greeted with smiles. Thank you, Louis, and the team of kitchen sparkies. Please enjoy the gallery below. Makanan yang terbaik di sekitar Tambolaka. Harus coba di sini kak. Terima kasih! 🙏🦞🦔

Such an excellent find in Sumba. We only tried the Indonesian dishes but the sup buntut was excellent. Nasi Goreng was tasty but a tad sweet. First time I had banana blossom. Too heavy on the salt but so delicate

Looovee the foods and drinks here whether Indonesian food or western food. Definitely need to try it out when you ever in sumba. Me and my friends went for dinner 2 nights in a roll.
Rita — Google review
A lovely place to enjoy food. The ambience is so calm, quiet, and warm. They have a nice seating area with small tables and chairs in a chic design. They also put nice decorations that shows Sumba culture. Green grass and plants in front of the restaurant that will give you a good feeling when entering the dining room. The staffs will greet and let you pick the tables you want. They are very friendly and well-trained and speak English very well. They have a good variation of foods, Indonesian and or western foods. Some said that their best seller is pizza. But we also like the fish meals and nasi bakar. The taste is amazing. The serving is quite slow as the food is prepared very thoroughly. So please wait patiently while waiting for the food. Sit and enjoy the ambience before eating is the best option. Wifi is provided here, also a clean restroom, although the restroom is not in the same building as the restaurant, so when it rains you need to use an umbrella to go to the restroom. What I like here is that they allow pets at the restaurant. There is a pretty white dog who greet and sit around our tables when we dined here a week ago.

Stopped here twice on my way through Waingapu on my travels. I loved the atmosphere and view. Cute decor, great food. It was delicious! The ladies were sweet and helpful who served. Very quiet when I came thru but the place was reliable, hence revisiting.

The location is great, vibes, seating arrangements and cleanliness are great. However, the food is okay. They can improve the taste, pretty bland. We ordered fried rice with sei, vegetables fried rice and crunchy eggplant. Nice plce to just hanging out and drink but not for meal.

Restaurant
D'Sumba Ate in Waikabubak is a popular dining spot, especially for couples looking for a romantic dinner. This restaurant offers Indonesian and Asian cuisine, as well as some European options like pizza. It's known for its cozy atmosphere and the option to dine in gazebos or on floor cushions. While prices are slightly higher than local eateries, the food is less spicy and caters to tourists' tastes.
Amazing food. Loved my ayam betutu and nasi goreng. Authentic. Great value for money. Staff and service is excellent. Also have a reflexology just besides. Recommended.

Food pretty expensive and doesn’t worth with the taste at all. We ordered ayan geprek and soup ayam. Ayam geprek was super oily and salty and the soup ayam a lot of bones. Watermelon juice was good The waitress not communicative at all and did error order of mine.
Ayunda N — Google review
WOW! That’s first thing on my mind first time entering this place. Cozy and warm place with pizza grilled outside (yes! Pizza grilled!) The menu selection also various. Indonesian and western. The taste also good. Marinara pizza 👍🏽 grilled squid 👍🏽 warm ginger tea 👍🏽 The price is a bit high compare to other restaurant in sumba, but it’s worthed.
Ari P — Google review
Nice atmosphere, but the food was very disappointing, especially for the price. Also, the staff messed up our order. Twice. I understand that we’re not in Napoli here, but this pizza (that I ordered for my kids) should simply not be served. Ketchup is not a base sauce. The crust was so doughy that it felt like eating gum. The grilled chicken gave me and my wife cramps right after. I honestly don’t understand what this restaurant is aiming for. It’s too pricey for most locals. If it wants to serve tourists, then it needs to step up (big time) in terms of quality and hygiene.
Joep H — Google review
Great ambiance, nice servers, took a while to get our food and very low quality food

Staff are nice, good interior, they have Bali cuisine, but something is quite missing when it comes to the taste of the food compare to its price. One and only maybe you could get Cappuccino with a basic machine.

Nestled in the charming coastal area of Waingapu, "Warung Ikan Bakar Enjoy Aja" is a delightful seafood haven located within the old harbor complex. The gentle sea breeze adds to the inviting atmosphere as you savor an array of delectable dishes beyond just grilled fish. When visiting Sumba in NTT, indulging in their signature sour fish soup is a must!

What a lovely people! I have tried many crispy eggplant (terong crispy) in many restaurants around Waingapu and I can for sure say they have the best! The grilled fish was also great! I'll be coming back here if I visit Waingapu again. Terima kasih!

A seafood restaurant in Waingapu. Near the Harbour. They serve many varieties of seafoods, like fish, calamari. Sometimes very crowded with many tourists. So come early or make a reservation before. Quality of the foods are very good. Please ask the waiter to read your order again, because sometimes they did not write the right order from you.

NIHI Sumba is a luxurious resort on the island of Sumba, offering thatched villas with private pools, exquisite dining options, a rejuvenating spa, and access to a stunning beach. The resort has established itself as a preferred partner for those seeking an exceptional experience. Guests rave about the extraordinary staff and the sight of horses running along the beach. Visitors are welcomed with personalized touches such as vegan snacks for specific dietary preferences.
Google should start allowing 6-star reviews for places like this, because NIHI truly deserves it. I honestly don’t even know where to begin, because my stay at NIHI was beyond anything I could have imagined. From start to finish, everything was absolutely flawless, so perfect that it’s hard to even put into words. I didn’t even know a place like this could exist. First of all, the staff are simply incredible. They’re always attentive and available, yet they also know how to step back so you never feel overwhelmed. I’m very used to staying in luxury hotels and I’ve experienced some of the most renowned ones around the world, but NIHI surpasses them all. The setting is breathtaking, the food is worthy of the finest restaurants (trust me, I’m French), and every little detail is thought through and anticipated. If you’re out Padel tennis and it starts to get dark, someone is already there turning on the lights for you. When my bracelet broke during the stay, a member of the team quietly took the initiative to repair it for me. Little notes left on the bed, perfect organization, everything was seamless. This is the very first time I genuinely want to come back to a hotel. Whatever you read about NIHI, know that the reality is even better once you’re there. Paradise exists, and it’s called NIHI.
Julian A — Google review
Staying at Nihi Sumba was beyond anything I expected. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with the warmest hospitality - especially from all the incredible local Sumbese staff. Their kindness, genuine smiles, and deep sense of pride in their work made the experience truly special. One of the standout things for me was how evident it was that the staff genuinely care about the guests and the hotel itself. Many of the locals we spoke to shared how proud they are to work at Nihi and how their work supports their families and communities. I’ve seen some reviews questioning whether the locals are happy the hotel is there - but from everything we saw and everyone we spoke with, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Every interaction we had reflected joy, appreciation, and a real sense of belonging. The food was another highlight - fresh, delicious, and all you can eat. We also used room service a few times, which was prompt and just as high quality as the meals served at the restaurants. Big shoutout to Tian, Vincent, Inda and Linda from the gift shop, and many others who went out of their way to make our stay memorable. Every detail, from the service to the surroundings, was perfect. Nihi is not just a hotel - it’s an experience rooted in culture, community, and care. Hands down the best hotel experience I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to return.
Jed P — Google review
We had high hopes on Nihi after seeing on instagram, having 3 Michelin keys and being in top ten in top 50 hotels in the world. Experience was underwhelming due to several reasons. 1- Nihi experience rooms: we booked Nihi experience, which mentioned we were supposed to stay in different rooms. That did not happen and we stayed in the same room. Room was low tech for its price. No light controllers near bed. Curtains around the bed had blood and other stains from insects. Clear that they do not regularly wash them. Also windows and doors to toilets are not fully closed so bugs are getting in. 2- Service: restaurant service was amazing. However, butler service was pretty bad. Reason is that although we booked our activities almost 1 week in advance, we were told a night before our horse ride that our horse ride was to be moved to another day as it was fully booked. We were quite surprised as it was confirmed many times. Then after we objected to it, they kept the same time. Makes me think they tried to squeeze in another guest. Same happened with Padel, while they confirmed the time, they had to then change the time. Pretty uncoordinated. 3- Location: Location is amazing. Would have been 5 stars. However I learned that they closed of rhe ocean and beach to local and other people, which should be a crime in every country. This is unacceptable and lame excuse such as “we invested a lot”, does not work. Overall experience was underwhelming for the price they charge, I question Michelin’s credibility for giving Nihi 3 keys (unless something else was involved…) I am pretty sure you can get same experience in another hotel in sumba for much less.

Nihi Sumba is truly one of the world’s top hotels, and it more than lives up to its reputation. From the moment we arrived, the level of care and attention to detail from Petrus and his team was outstanding. Every interaction felt genuine, thoughtful, and delivered with a warmth that made us feel completely at home. The food was exceptional — consistently high quality, beautifully presented, and supported by an excellent menu with plenty of variety. The Spa Safari was a world-class experience in itself — serene, indulgent, and something we will never forget. Every detail of our stay was carefully considered, from the rooms to the activities, creating an experience that was both luxurious and deeply personal. A heartfelt thank you to Petrus and the entire Nihi Sumba family for making our stay so memorable. Without question, this deserves its place among the very best hotels in the world.

We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary at Nihi Sumba and it was simply unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we felt embraced by the beauty, peace and soul of this extraordinary place. We stayed at villa Marangga- a dream in every way. The design, the privacy, the comfort and above all the breathtaking views and the sunsets are absolutely magical. A big thank-you to Domi and Maxy, you are truly special! Warm, genuine, caring and always one step ahead of what we might need. You made us feel at home! The food was divine, fresh and flavorful. Our ‘dinner under the stars’ was beyond anything we could have imagined. To our surprise, Ingga sang a beautiful song just for us- such a moving, hearfelt moment that brought tears to our eyes. Thank you, dear Ingga, for your kindness and beautiful voice that will stay in our hearts. The Sumba horses… another dream came true. I took 2 sunset walks along the beach. The light, the call, the connection with these pure and gentle horses…. Magic! And the spa… what an experience. World-class treatments in a breathtaking setting. A must when you visit Nihi. Nihi touched our hearts in a way no other place has. We left feeling renewed, grateful and part of something truly special. Thank you to the entire Nihi team, for making our 45th anniversary so deeply meaningful. We will cherish these memories for ever 💛

The best hotel experience I have ever had, everything about the experience was delightful. It began at the Bali airport where we had a team helping us check in luggage, bring us to the gate, then the Tambolaka airport where we got picked up and taken to the hotel. It was seamless and efficient. The staff was welcoming and very invested in giving us the best experience possible. We had two Guest Kapten helping with what was needed. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was very polite, smiled and was overall very nice. The infrastructure is superb. The villas are clean, spacious, well designed and everything worked as it should. The food is absolutely delicious. An amazing mix of western food and Indonesian/sumbanese food. Security wise absolutely no issue. At no point we felt like things were going to be stolen, the safe was not used at all. When I left a tip for room service, we got a message from our Guest Kapten asking if we had forgotten the money. Will be definitely coming back for sure. I feel if I wrote everything about the experience it would be a small book. Thank you everyone at Nihi.

Mr. Cafe is a popular restaurant located in Jalan Marisi, Waingapu, Sumba. It offers a diverse menu featuring local Sumba dishes as well as common cafe and restaurant fare such as fried rice and eggs. One unique feature of Mr. Cafe is the option to reserve a table and order through WhatsApp. The establishment provides clean rooms with both air-conditioned non-smoking areas and smoking sections without air conditioning.
The food here was amazing - fresh and massive portions and loving the cool atmosphere 10/10

Relatively the best restaurant in Waingapu. Many choices of Indonesian food you can find here. Their ca kangkung and tahu goreng are always my favorite. Portion is pretty big for me and the price is quite affordable, ranged between 10K-40K. The rooms are clean. They devided into a non-smoking room which is air-conditioned and a smoking room without any air-con. Even they have a place for drivers to rest. Seating arrangement is good for group, but there are also tables for small group (1-2 people). This place opens at 7 in the morning and close at 9 pm. If you want to have a simple breakfast, you can eat breads from their bakery. Some choices are donuts, white bread, danish, muffins, etc. Price from 7K-20K. Crowded at meals time, especially lunch so that the service is slower.

This is tour and travel tourist trap. All the rental drivers will persuade us to come here. Food is so so, we tried the siomay and not even finish this. Meat soup is quite good but nothing special. The place is limited and many reserved for tour people. We got seated in smoking section, can’t stand this. If you go for private trip and your driver asked to have a meal here, better go somewhere else. Price is reasonable but dinner is not enjoyable.

This is one of the very good restaurants in Waingapu. This restaurant offers lot of menus to choose and order. One of the favourite foods is ayam bakar (grilled chicken) but if you are vegans then no need to worry because you can order vegetarian foods. The drinks are also good. It is clean, comfy and quiet place to enjoy your foods and drinks. It is AC room. The staff are friendly and price are affordable. Dining here is recommended!!!!

Good place for eating nasi goreng. I recommend the Nasi Goreng Spesial. Located at Waingapu city, easy to reach from terminal and just few minutes away from the central market. Price is a little expensive but okay.

You got a great view to the port. Unfortunately, the service was quite slowly response and some of food were not prepared. Maybe because they didn't expect that came some guest that time. Anyway, great atmosphere and it should be a plus point to have restaurant there at the strategic location. Looking forward for more progress.

The restaurant is located near the port and it have very amazing scene. When we arrived the only food available is nasi campur. The food arrived after 20 minutes. The nasi campur came with white rice, sambal, fried chicken, mixed longbean and eggplant, and grated cucumber? The food is not the best i would say. The place have no window/door so when a rainstorm strike its very very cold there. The service was very bad. We just finished paying up, the waitress suddenly turned off the lamp and looked kinda in rush to drive us out. Would not recommend this place. 2/10.

Resort hotel
Nestled on a sprawling ten-hectare clifftop, Lelewatu Resort Sumba offers breathtaking vistas of the Indian Ocean. This luxurious retreat seamlessly blends traditional Sumbanese design with contemporary luxuries, providing an ideal setting for a romantic escape or personal sanctuary. The meticulously crafted villas and houses showcase local heritage, promising an unparalleled stay. Guests can indulge in spa treatments, take a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool, and savor delectable dining options.
Some places you just fall in love with, and Lelewatu was just such a place! We stayed in villa 6 for over a week and a half. It is an absolutely great villa with the pool in front, so one wakes up overlooking the pool and then the sea! Fantastic! The room is very beautiful and well laid out. It has a very large bed and fantastically huge pillows! It's also not too far from the reception if you prefer walking (rather than buggy), as we do. The views of the sea and the Milky Way are truly amazing and the excellent, friendly staff members are always willing to help. The food really is very good, especially considering dining options near to, or even far from, the hotel are very limited indeed (in other words the hotel is not taking advantage of us as a "captive audience" as some less reputable places do).....and the portions are exceptionally generous. Wifi fast and reliable. Some people have mentioned the hotel being run down in places. Well, there were a couple of very large earthquakes South of Sumba just before Covid...and then the Covid fiasco... so as far as I am concerned, it's totally understandable. What's more important is that all of the other areas are beautifully maintained....and to cap it all more investment is coming. So, honestly, not an issue for us! Also, don't forget the price! Just down the road, there is the Nihi resort. For the price of one night at Nihi (and not even for staying in anywhere near their best villa there!) one could spend more than we did for our whole stay at Lelewatu and that must not be taken for granted at all! The absolutely lovely staff, fantastic location, and the willingness of people to help really stand out. A special thanks go to - and in no particular order - Mbak Mbak Gina, Alin, Dina, Dora, Ayu and Tasha - and apologies as I know I have forgotten to mention at least two lovely people - and of course a big "thank you" to the delightfullly helpful Pak Wanto and Ibu Risna! We absolutely loved staying here and for us, Lelewatu was unbeatable!
Mat D — Google review
Great place to stay when you want to chill, relax, and far from noisiness. Currently, they have 13 rooms, and the remainings are still renovated. All staff are friendly and they are always ready to pick you up with a buggy car from villa to community area. The bed is super comfy, made me sleep so well. Also they provide good breakfast. Unfortunately, they can not provide seafood menu that time. Last, it has nice view here, particularly sunset time.
Edita N — Google review
Spectacular - if you manage your expectations. We enjoyed our stay, but do not expect "white glove" 5-star service. Expect a 4-star jungle lodge with lovely villas and incredible views. It is not constructed or managed to "high-end" standards. Food is average. Staff are all very friendly, and eager to assist, but they are not trained for 5-star service. Yes, go there. Your memories and photos will be spectacular. But you will likely feel that you paid an inflated price for what you get. Just manage your expectations.
Drew S — Google review
Stunning views, but not five-star service. Lelewatu Resort offers a breathtaking location, and our room and bathroom were beautifully designed. The view was spectacular, and the staff were kind — especially Adhy, who waited patiently at the airport when our flight was cancelled. Unfortunately, service fell far short of five-star standards. Staff lacked proper training, leading to constant confusion. Food was one of the biggest disappointments: orders rarely matched the menu, and dishes were improvised without care. For example, a chicken sandwich arrived with cold grilled chicken and egg — not listed on the menu, which could have been dangerous for someone with an allergy. Breakfast arrangements were inconsistent. Some days the kitchen accommodated early starts as agreed via WhatsApp; other days they refused, despite written confirmation. The spa was similarly uneven — one excellent therapist (Mince), one untrained with long nails who couldn’t deliver a deep tissue massage. The gym was tiny, uncomfortably hot, and poorly equipped. Tours didn’t include what was promised (no snacks nor coconut water,) and main food was stored all day in a hot car — unsafe. Prices for tours and transfers felt arbitrary and unfair. There’s no beach access — just a cliff view over rough sea. We ended up spending most of our time at another hotel with better food, service, and direct beach access. Lelewatu looks five-star on the surface, but it’s a two-star experience at luxury prices. We wouldn’t return.
Fernanda N — Google review
Don't go there. The bungalows are downtrodden, mine was made of plastic fake wood. The service wants to help but is more disturbing. For example I checked on and signed, the lady said let me finish registering then I bring you to your room. The air-conditioning is barely working, the beach and the sea is unaccessible. The gym stinks of plastic and all is overpriced.
Christoph ( — Google review
The views were lovely (need to book ocean view room), but I echo the other reviews where the place was poorly maintained and not the most clean. What bothered me the most was the wood shavings that appeared in different spots over our 1 night - it was disturbing and initially i thought the staff didn’t properly clean up the sand left by the previous guest. But by morning it was in too many places - when we asked the staff, she explained that geckos can cause the wood of the roofs to fall. I wish I knew it earlier before having to wonder what it was through the entire day - but even after her explanation it did give me the creeps TLDR: great views, room service for food provided. However if you’re bothered by cleanliness or hygiene, you might wanna try other resorts instead
Ella C — Google review
We stayed here for 4 nights recently, and truly felt a profound shift just from being on this beautiful island. Lelewatu was our sanctuary during this time, and we were able to relax and unwind at the property. The staff were truly what made this place special. We felt taken care of, and everyone was an extension to the kindness of all the others on Sumba island; generous, welcoming, and warm. Huge thank you to Adhy, Ayu, Wanto, and Rudi for the laughs and hospitality. It wouldn't feel fair to not give an honest review of the property - there are some things to be aware of. Lelewatu is a rustic kind of beauty, there were some small touches to the room itself that could have elevated the “luxury” component. For example, there was no hand soap, the shower was clogged for the duration of our stay, and there was some sort of black residue falling from the roof onto our belongings. The room was on a slight slant, which added to the "rustic" feel, although we did eventually get used to it. We also felt a strange sense of discomfort around what we believe was the general manager, who went straight into a verbal spiel about excursions upon our arrival. It felt salesy and we were put off by this. She also tried to charge us for water when we got our final bill, after we were told that all bottled water was complementary. It felt as though we were being taken advantage of, and we didn't like the air around this vibe. The food and beverages at the property were expensive compared to our other travels in Indonesia. Due to the remoteness of the island, and the property location, there isn’t easy access to food - so just something to keep in mind. I second that this is not a "five" star property without further maintenance and more attention to small details, but it is absolutely gorgeous, and the views will stick with you long after you leave. Overall, we will miss waking and falling asleep to the waves of the ocean, and soaking in the sunsets at the property. Lelewatu is a worthwhile visit, and a beautiful place to get your mind off of reality, if only just for a brief time.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I absolutely fell in love with Lelewatu! The location was perfect — peaceful, breathtaking, and surrounded by nature. The staff felt like lifelong friends; so sweet, genuine, and always had our best interests at heart. Their care made the whole experience feel incredibly special. Our room was next-level — ocean views, a private pool, the most beautiful bath and shell-designed sink… just wow. Total luxury with thoughtful Sumbanese touches. The WiFi was fast (huge bonus!), and the main restaurant? Stunning. Incredible views, fast service, and hands down some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. So much variety and everything was delicious. Already dreaming of my return. Makasih banyak 💕💕💕 Lelewatu, you have my heart! Sasha & George.

I'd say it's a must try place. Quite an authentic local food menu. The grilled whole village chicken (Ayam Kampong Bakar) is quite amazing, though expensive (150K) the local sambal was the best I had and for those who can take chilli, I'd say do not miss it. Makan Dulu Restaurant by the Sumba Hospitality Foundation is a delightful culinary gem that elevates traditional Sumbanese cuisine to new heights. This unique eatery combines local ingredients with international flair, creating dishes that are both familiar and innovative. The restaurant's design is striking, featuring a semi-outdoor layout that keeps it cool and inviting without the need for air conditioning.
Made a quick stop here before heading to airport. The building itself is uniquely designed & it is semi outdoor and cool even without aircon. The service is great, staff is friendly and super attentive. Food is mostly Indonesian food with local taste and style. We came in a group of 4 and ordered the nasi campur for two (you’ll get few dishes that you can share), sate ayam, ikan balik tomat, mie goreng, drinks (one of them is Kopi Sumba), and dessert (pulung-pulung ubi). In here, I finally get to taste the Nasi Jagung (Sumba’s specialty). Overall food taste is great ❤️ Btw, this restaurant doesn’t serve pork.

Good food with a view of rice field and if you are lucky you can watch the local birds which are just exist at Sumba island. Love to take lunch here, while it still in the West Sumba city but you get a calming atmosphere out from the traffic.

Quite lost direction, as the sign not of the restaurant is not good enough. But when we went inside, it's surprisingly beautiful. The wooden house, nice few with rice field and good decorated. We came twice as this is the best choice food in area ( clean, fast, friendly, also good food ). Clean, it's important 😳 I recommend to all our friends who visit sumba ( waikabubak ).

Amazing place! Lovely atmosphere, we ordered orange and papaya juice, yuca as entree and carbonara and mie vegetarian with tofu and tempeh loved that they have vegan options and so many in general! We meet the owner too soo nice!

A real hidden gem in Waikabubak! Whether you're passing by or staying in town, don't hesitate to come here for food prepared with an eye for detail, great taste and local, quality ingredients! The owner, Jantje, is an absolute legend and made us feel right at home at his tranquil, stylefully designed restaurant, overlooking the rice paddies. Oh, and did I forget to mention the food is very correctly priced for the quality you get?! We would 1000% recommend 🙌

A gem! Hard to see from the road, but the restaurant is very beautiful. Portions are big and food is delicious. Price are also very nice and the staff is very friendly. Recommend!

Perfect spot to grab food for lunch or dinner with a view. We were greeted warmly by the host who also spoke through some of the menu with us. Food was delicious and I would return. Thank you for the hospitality.

Found this place because our driver took us here and it’s not a tourist trap! we ate the boneless grilled fish and ayam bumbu lolina - they were so good! The sambal is great. The ambiance is ok, overlooking the garden. The owner comes from a village nearby and greets us in person. They also harvest the vegetables from the garden.

We had lunch two times in this beautiful place in the heart of Sumba. The staff was accommodating and willing to meet our needs (vegetarianism, celiac disease). Great indonesian food!

Nestled in the heart of Sumba, Cosy Beach Club & Finas Restaurant is a delightful find that feels like a hidden treasure. This charming spot offers an array of mouthwatering dishes, with their Chocolate Coconut Tart stealing the spotlight as a must-try treat. The menu also features hearty burgers and crispy Cassava Fries, alongside delectable pizzas like the Bacon Pizza and Cream Bacon. Each dish comes in generous portions, ensuring you leave satisfied.
What an amazing find! I had a surprisingly delcicious pina colada, seafood pizza and a chocolate tart made with almond meal and fresh local coconut meat. The little beachside resto under a huga canvas glamping style tent is very chilled and authentic. Anastasia is a wonderful host and a creative cook!

Great place to go for some food, hang out, or kick back and have a beer. Anastasia cooks up all sorts of goodies in the kitchen and her desserts are excellent. My favorite is the pizza, so far the bet on the island! Their other menu items are great too and the hamburger is a meal all by itself. I'll see you guys on Sunday!!!

It's like I found a gem in Sumba. In here you will find the BEST tart in this whole island. My favorite is Chocolate Coconut Tart (40k). Not only that, they also have delicious burger and Casava Fries (90k) and also pizzas. I tried Bacon Pizza (80k) and Cream Bacon (95). Those are so yummy and so worth it. They serve it with BIG BIG portion. I'm so happy that I found this bar. The place is beautiful and cozy, like it's name. Plus the owners are so friendly. Such a perfect combination to hangout in Sumba!!👌✨

We had a great experience here. They served the best pizza in the entire Sumba island made with fresh, local market-bought vegetables and seafood. After two weeks in SE Asia of eating typical sweet-ish bread their french bread with butter was to die for. To finish off we had a delightful chocolate-coconut tart, washed down with a superb pina colada! Sitting outside, under the stars, listening to only the waves on the beach, one can feel very content with life. The owner and chef, Anastasia, and her husband Filipe, are very friendly. Thanks both for a wonderful night!!

Great little spot amongst the palms trees and nice to have some where in the area to go have a cold beer and meet some other travelers. Amazing samosas, limited spirits and mixers but has only just opened. Beers are cold and the owner and his girlfriend are really nice. They also have a good boat you can hire by the hour or day. First and only bar in kerewe Marosi area, but I don't think it'll be long before more open up.

Amu Dahi is a hidden gem nestled in the serene surroundings of Melolo, Sumba. This charming villa offers spacious bungalows that provide a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, making you feel right at home. The stunning bamboo bathrooms add a unique touch to your stay, while the refreshing natural water swimming pool is perfect for unwinding after exploring nearby waterfalls. Guests rave about the delicious homemade meals available on-site, including mouthwatering pizzas and delightful breakfasts.
As very year very warm welcome of Natalia and young staff. Very nice place to stay and have good meals for lunch or dinner . Nice garden. Stopped in just for coffee and a snack mid-afternoon. Friendly saff quickly prepared some tasty mie ayam. Relaxing atmosphere in a big bale (barn) resto surrounded by trees & flowers.

Spent one night here. This is one of these places which used to be nice. Where people put a lot of effort to build something nice and then stopped mantaining it... The room has a bad smell and was dirty. The outside area is run down too... Very sad to see. 400.000 IDR is just too much for this room. The only thing that kept us there was the lovely guy working there (whos name I forgott). He was super friendly and helpful. The Resto-area itself still looks quit nice and neaty. Would not come back for another night though.

What a amazing stay in Amu Dahi villas ! We were a group of 6 people traveling in Sumba! and what an experience ! Youri and Marine made us feel like home instantly ! The villa was spacious, the bambou bathroom beautiful and the fresh water swimming pool perfect to cool down after a day exploring the waterfalls around Melolo. We stayed 3 nights, and had time to try all the restaurant menu, special thanks for the homemade pizza ! The breakfast was delicious ! Marine and Youri are excellent hosts, they know a lot about Sumba island and traditional culture. They took us to so many different places. We hope to be back one day to see the evolution of the development of this beautiful island. Merci :-)

Great place with confortables bungalows in a quiet area in melolo. The owners are really nice and helpful to prepare with you the visit of the island. They know a lot of about Sumba. It's possible to rent a motorbike to discover the traditional village all around. Good home made foods (pizza, crepes, ice cream...). There is also a swimming with natural water. Highly recommanded!!

Vegetarian restaurant
During my recent adventure in Waingapu, I had the pleasure of dining at Rumah Makan Jawa for breakfast, lunch, and dinner over three delightful days. As a fan of Javanese cuisine, I was thrilled to discover that this restaurant offers a variety of vegan options. One standout dish was the tempe tering served with rice, long beans, bean sprouts, and sambal mentah—a zesty sauce reminiscent of pico de gallo.
I ate at this restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner 3 days in a row, while in town exploring the area. I love Javanese food and found it easy to eat vegan here. I ordered tempe tering (dry) with rice, long beans, and bean sprouts and sambal mentah which is a spicy pico de gallo type sauce. State the number of pieces you want of tempe. I ordered 8 pieces for a protein boost. They also have gado gado and tofu but I did not try those items. The wedang jahe drink is superb. I ordered take away a few times and mak packaged everything up nicely inside a cardboard box, with a plastic fork and spoon so we could eat at the waterfall.
Megan S — Google review
Very expensive, I asked for chicken that was already prepared because I needed to get home quickly, but they instead took a more expensive chicken, without telling me, and cooked it from scratch. I waited a long time, paid a high price, for a mediocre meal.
Faith W — Google review
If you are looking for Javanese food in Waingapu, try this. They have plenty choices you could have. Buffet or made by order. Local people said they have a good ayam bakar (grilled chicken), but i prefer their fried tahu tempe with sambal terasi. Tasted quite good when you are homesick and craving for Javanese food. This place is crowded when lunch time. Many government officers and local people have their lunch here or take away. Price is also affordable, 10K-30K. The good thing is that you could also order instant noodles with copped chilies here.
Agustine D — Google review
Overrated. It's very much better picking some other place than this. The pricing was okay, but the food takes too long to be served, and it tastes average at best.

A hidden gem in Sumba! Paradise Kitchen truly lives up to its name. I had the fresh mackerel fillet with purple sweet potato puree and lemongrass coconut sauce—an absolute delight! The freshness of the fish and the unique combination of flavors was something I’ve never experienced before. The location is cozy, and the staff is incredibly friendly. Don’t forget to reserve if you’re not staying at the resort—they currently only serve resort guests, but if you book ahead, they’ll prepare everything for you, just like they did for us!
