Boulenc is a popular European-style bakery and restaurant located in Centro, Oaxaca. Known for its fresh-baked sourdough bread, delectable pastries, and diverse menu featuring French, Italian, and international favorites like reuben sandwiches, wood-oven pizzas with sourdough crusts, egg sandwiches on homemade English muffins, shakshuka, and croque-monsieurs. The cafe offers an airy ambiance with tables in a covered courtyard.
Boulenic is a gem in Oaxaca! We had breakfast here and really enjoyed it. French toast was best we ever had. The pastries and breads are absolutely delicious — fresh, buttery, and full of flavor. Coffee is excellent and pairs perfectly with their baked goods. The place has a cozy, welcoming vibe that makes you want to linger. Service is friendly and attentive, and everything feels made with care. A must-visit for anyone who loves good coffee , artisanal pastries and good food.
Valentina M — Google review
Enjoyable breakfast. Had a baguette with wonderful house made bread and high quality cured meats. Quiche was moderate and served ice cold, which was weird. She loved her shakshuka. Worth a stop for the bread.
Beecat — Google review
I can see why this place has the high rating that it does. I opted for the yogurt bowl and it was divine! My husband had a sandwich and it was massive! Despite the portions, they were not heavy. Loved the fresh ingredients and lovely staff. Looks to be very popular with tourists.
Maggen B — Google review
Loved it here very much! Amazing food, plenty of different options to choose from (also vegetarian) and an impressive drinks menu ranging from kombuchas and lemonades to cocktails, Mexican cava and mezcals. It’s also very cosy there, it’s a lovely covered courtyard so it’s kind of outside but not warm from the sun.
Anastasiia — Google review
We stopped by Boulenc in Oaxaca after looking at it online. The place has a lovely vibe — warm, busy, and full of energy. The food was fine, though it didn’t quite live up to the hype. We had to wait around 20 minutes to get in, so it’s clearly a popular spot, but overall it was a pleasant enough experience.
Harminder B — Google review
Lovely breakfast. I had molletes and added an egg on top. It was delicious. The only thing I really didn’t like, as a matcha lover, was the matcha.
Kimia H — Google review
Cute bakery-restaurant. The breads are amazing and the sandwiches we had for lunch were hearty and delicious. Seems like the place can get busy so anticipate waiting.
Damon T — Google review
You want to wait 25 minutes for a table that it was always available? This is your place. Boulenc it will keep you waiting… FOR FUN. But hey, the fun it’s not over. Are you a local? We have a special place for you: the second floor. Our first floor it’s reserved for our very favorite AMERICAN$$$.

Casa Taviche is a charming and unpretentious restaurant located on the outskirts of the city center. The venue offers a relaxed and rustic-chic atmosphere with a courtyard, creating an inviting dining experience. Known for its lighter and healthier take on Oaxacan cuisine, Casa Taviche emphasizes seasonal and local ingredients in its daily changing menu of up to 10 dishes.
We’re just looking for a quick bite but were very presently surprised. Well thought out dishes, nice and forthcoming staff and really great prices. Definitely recommend!
Felix C — Google review
The restaurant is cozy with a nice atmosphere and the food is fresh and well-prepared. But if compared with other restaurants, this one didn’t impress too much. Service was friendly. Good spot to try, but not one I’d rush back to.
Valentina M — Google review
Concha rellena was to die for!! The best one I tried. 😋 Has a nice selection of brunch food. Unfortunately the coffee machine was not working the day we went but our overall experience was really nice. Has a nice small patio. Service was friendly as well.
Lucy — Google review
This place was pretty cutesy and perky. Sorry I couldn't think of any other words. There's a bar at the front and the inside is very colorful and, well, perky. I felt like there were more tourists here than other restaurants I'd tried before in the area. The waitress that was serving us seemed a little timid but was still very friendly. We learned the hard way that you have to ask for your check and it was kind of hard to get ahold of her but it's okay. We ordered a potato and leek soup, a tiramisu, and a chocolate tomale. The soup and tiramisu were amazing! The tomale wasn't my favorite but it was still alright. We also got the best chai ever, an iced hibiscus tea, and some fruity mango drink. YOU'VE GOT TO GET THE CHAI. It's astounding.
Emily G — Google review
Came for a late lunch when I first arrived in Oaxaca and it was phenomenal. My Spanish is not great (I can somewhat communicate) and they were super flexible in communication. They had vegan options and I left so full! Would definitely recommend.
Z D — Google review
This is hands down the best meal we have had in Oaxaca. We shared the strawberry salad that had smoked cheese, seeds and a delicious guava dressing (I got too excited and forgot a picture). I had the mole which was made with guava and it was super yummy. My husband had the tlayuda with beef and it was on a blue tortilla (the best). This is a must go to! We previously ate at Michelin restaurants and this food even better. And and amazing price point too.
Ashleigh M — Google review
What a hidden gem! We stumbled upon this place walking down the street looking for a spot to have a nice dinner. The food is fresh and delicious. We shared the chili nogada and tuna entrée. The Mescalita was Perfection. The café is adorable and the service is really attentive and welcoming. We liked it so much. We came back the very next day for lunch and we shared the avocado toast with mushrooms. The portions are very generous and the price is very inexpensive for what you are getting. The quality is exceptional. I will definitely come back on my next visit if not again during this trip!
Enrica P — Google review
Lovely first meal in Oaxaca centro. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was impeccable. It is not a place for a rushed meal. I had the green juice which was very nutritious and different because it had nopales which gave some texture, a local kombucha and the agua del dia as part of the lunch menu. The kombucha and guava flavored water of the day were really amazing. For the menu of the day, it was a lovely vegetable soup with seasonal ingredients, such as Aztec broccoli and squash blossoms, a main course of a simple grilled chicken breast, salad with passionfruit dressing and fruit and rice. Finished it off with an incredible creampuff with fruit. For just US$20, this was quite a deal and I was there enjoying the atmosphere for a while. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a lovely group outing or just a solo traveler enjoying!

Restaurant
Levadura de Olla Restaurante in Oaxaca City has played a significant role in the resurgence of mezcal, once considered a humble drink. The restaurant offers an extensive selection of mezcal options, reflecting the city's newfound appreciation for this native spirit. Additionally, Levadura de Olla is celebrated for its exceptional Oaxacan cuisine, particularly its emphasis on mole dishes and inventive creations such as guacamole with chapulines (grasshoppers).
Levadure de Olla 1 Michelin star so big expectations and high hopes! The entrances to the restaurant was decorated with old school cooking methods, corn, cacao, and various things that are found in Oaxaca cuisine. Excellent start. They have a beautiful table of endless variants of tomatoes, absolutely breath taking! When seated you’re started off with some tostada which was the best one we’ve eaten so far! And some delicious in house salsa Roja. Excellent snack! I personally came here for the famous tomato dish. (Jitomates nativos Oaxaquenõs, pure de betabel y vinagreta de frutas) And for the first time ever in all My reviews this is the first 10/10 dish. Beautiful presented, acidic, sweet, savoury. I couldn’t stop eating I almost ordered a second plate. The beetroot puree stunning and paired perfect with the variety of tomatoes. Some tasted like fruits, some were more ok the umami side, some gave different textures. I’m gonna think about this plate for a long time… wow We also got the Tamale ( Tamal de requesón) 9.1/10 Once again everything on the plate played a part and paired perfectly! Very thoughtful and showing oaxacas mole in a delicate way! Visually stunning as well. Huge recommend, and not unreasonably priced.

This restaurant is something different in the culinary world of Oaxaca, and you can feel it as soon as you walk in. The food is great, with elaborate and profound tastes. Their dishes are surprising, which make this place stand out above other more standard restaurants. The serving is also very beautiful and meticulously thought of. They have a great variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Service is terrific, very attentive, waiters are very professional and ask about allergies and special requests regarding ingredients. Oaxaca has great street and market food, but in the restaurant category this was our best experience.
Uri R — Google review
From start to end it was a great experience. We liked the unique decor of the restorant so much. The tomatoes showplace was so impressive. Never seen so many tomatoes together. The dishes were all tasty. We had tomatoes salad, fried Quesadillas with fish and mole shrimps. Our waiter was very informative. He spoke really good English. The chocolate dessert and the burnt Milk dessert were both soo good.
Gurhan K — Google review
Just had dinner here and didn’t even realize it was a Michelin-rated restaurant! I happened to see that it was mentioned from a few people online and I booked it solely based on the fact that it had many vegan options. I was immensely surprised how veg-forward the menu is, and coming in with no expectations, I was blown away by the tomato dish. What a ballsy move for a chef to present a dish based on just tomatoes and beets, but on closer inspection it’s not just a simple tomato salad, it’s 14 varieties of endemic tomatoes of Oaxaca. If people don’t appreciate how complex this dish is (and how the back can easily goof up such a simple dish), then they shouldn’t be dining in this restaurant. The yellow mole was understated and beautiful with the delicious chickpeas. The squash dish was delicate and still had depth at the same time with its puréed base. Alex was our server and he was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable in answering our questions. The whole restaurant was very comfortable and we felt very relaxed with the hospitality. After dinner we had the privilege to get a tour of the back kitchen and after viewing the various rooms, and reading some of the reviews, I’d have to say that people who write shallow google reviews of this place do not understand the work involved in keeping a kitchen this pristine. I was beyond honoured to have also met the chef who’s a woman! Kudos to her for representing amazing Oaxacan cuisine and thank you for displaying vegan options and showing off the delicious seasonal vegetables Oaxaca has to offer.
Vanessa G — Google review
The food and especially the service was outstanding. We actually felt like someone was hosting us at his/her home and not like a random guest at a restaurant. We received explanations to all dishes and never packed anything. Also the Ambiente is very nice due to the patio. Would definitely come back when visiting Oaxaca again.
AS — Google review
There are a lot of amazing food options in Oaxaca. This, of all the spots we’ve tried, was our favorite. Incredibly well priced for amazing food, service, and ambience. There’s no where you can go wrong on the menu (get a drink with passion fruit! and don’t skip dessert!). The guacamole with a variety of avocados was amazing. Javier was an incredible server. Will recommend this spot over and over again.
Katherine H — Google review
The staff is very kind and helpfull, the hype about the tomatoes is worth it. We took the guacamole with grasshoppers and the ceremonial mole. As desserts the corn bread and apple tamale. They were all good. Why did I gave only 4 stars instead of 5? We are coming from Europe so a lot of flavours in Mexico are new to us. Alltough it was really good, we weren't more amazed then in a normal restaurant. And in a normal restaurant we paid more like 250 pesos in total and here we paid 1500 pesos. Which still is afforable and you get good food for that price, don't get me wrong! It was our first michelin star experience, and I guess it's the perfect place to do it! So if you never had a michelin experience and would like to give it a try: Go for it! If you love fine dining and a very pretty surrounding: Go for it! BUT: make a reservation!!
Elodie V — Google review
Simply food was amazing! All the dishes ordered were way beyond expectations. Perhaps, this is why they achieved a Michelin star while the sister restaurant in CDMX couldn't. Unfortunately, the server wasn't as attentive as I anticipated. He spoke fluent English but I felt like a tape recording was playing at 1.2X speed. He did his job, but most customers will expect a little more from waiting staff. We ended up in a typical courtyard-style dining area. It did the job but didn't wow us. Certainly, a power outage in the middle of the afternoon didn't help. Overall, I highly recommend you visit this restaurant. You won't be disappointed, and make sure you bring cash just in case of a blackout. 😊

La Popular is a casual, popular spot with great food and cheap prices in the heart of Centro. The atmosphere is lively and friendly, perfect for grabbing a bite or refueling on a busy day. It offers plenty of vegetarian options and is very kid-friendly.
It's called La Popular for a reason. Love this place and always return. Fun , noisy , non pretentious atmosphere with delicious food. Sometimes you have to wait for a table as it is tiny (you can also try La Popular Otra just up the street ). Super sweet servers.
Ishvara C — Google review
We ordered the shrimp and tacos, and they were genuinely delicious. However, the ceviche was extremely disappointing — it didn’t taste like ceviche at all, and we couldn’t even eat it. What made the experience worse was that the staff showed no concern or reaction whatsoever. They simply added it to the bill without saying a word, which felt really unpleasant and unprofessional. I wouldn’t recommend trying the ceviche here at all.
Аліна Г — Google review
Came during lunch time in the wet season and were seated right away. We ordered the milanesa and carne asada Torre’s and the squash blossom quesadilla. All were incredible!
Paige W — Google review
La Popular Named correctly 100% full of locals, greats vibes, and delicious food. Services itself was calm and honestly not needed. You get a great view of the street perfect for views and conversation. The food spoke for itself. México city’s restaurant scene was quite disappointing if I’m being honest but Oaxaca absolutely smashed it out of the park on the first go. We had the Pozole (spicy chicken soup) and Caldo De Camarón (spicy shrimp soup) during a rainy day! Meal for the mood and was packed full of flavour strong 9.1/10 Paired with torta carnitas which was fantastic with the soups! The Salsas were fresh and tasty! Mojitos some of the best I’ve had on the trip so far. Really hard to find a fault in this place especially with the reasonable pricing!
Spencer F — Google review
The best food I’ve had in Oaxaca Reasonable price with decent atmosphere and great service Definitely worth of a visit
Tung H — Google review
There are two La Populars, the one on Google maps and its smaller sister one block north. Where we ate a few times last year. This is where I am and it’s my favorite. The art alone is reasonable to come but the food is great, beer selection unparalleled, and staff as always in this City me encanta, perfecto. I ate the salmon. Shut the front door it was perfect and I’m from the salmon capital of the world (Seattle).

Restaurant style mexican food! If you want to have good traditional food but do not want to sit on the streets, this is the place. The pozole verde had a lot of flavor and is accomplished with lots of sides. Waiters are not fast but you can enjoy the scene outside!

Nestled in the lively Xochimilco neighborhood of Oaxaca, Ancestral Cocina Tradicional is a charming eatery that pays homage to authentic Oaxacan culinary practices. The restaurant prides itself on preserving time-honored cooking traditions, offering a menu that beautifully captures the rich and diverse flavors of the region.
Simply fabulous. The ambience was so lovely, beautiful garden setting. Wonderful gentleman playing the saxophone. Such a nice touch. Service was outstanding! A good explanation of the menus items. The foot was over the top. We ordered 3 different entrees and they were all delicious. The short ribs and molè sauce won!
Nada H — Google review
Had an excellent dinner at ancestral. I was craving some mole and this place came recommend. There’s several to choose from such a mole negro, yellow, and red. I asked my waiter which he recommend and ultimately went with the short rib with red mole. The red mole was delicious, I’m glad I got a side of tortillas to soak up the last of the mole. The short rib was cooked very well too. The roasted vegetables that came with the meat were delicious as well. It included carrots, corn, zucchini and cauliflower. The cauliflower was pretty bland but the rest of the vegetables were tasty. You must get the mole ice cream. Super unique and delicious. The dessert is served with a plantain and mole sauce as well as the ice cream. They serve complimentary tostadas, salsa and feta cheese. This was nothing special. The salsa was not very good and the feta cheese was an odd touch in my opinion. You can skip this is and save room for your entree and dessert.

This is the best food place in Oaxaca as far as I’m concerned! Of course, I have not tried all of them, but whatever we had here was completely extraordinary. Service was very good , and the atmosphere was relaxing and pleasant. Highly recommended for flavors that will blow your mind! To walk off all that deliciousness , check the nearby murals in the neighborhood after dinner.
Jelena P — Google review
We had a good experience here. The service was excellent and friendly. Drinks were good too. The food was good, though it wasn’t to my liking. I felt the mole lacked a bit of depth of flavor to it. Their famous tacos of shrimp and tripa are good but I really don’t like tripa so we didn’t enjoy that at all. We left it at that and didn’t want to try other dishes. If you’re not deeply familiar with Mexican cuisine these details will probably not bother you and you’ll probably have a good time and a great meal. I wouldn’t go back based on the two dishes we ate.
Sanel S — Google review
Such a peaceful restaurant! I came here around 2PM when it first opened and there was no one - very much felt like a private dining experience. I was alone so I was limited in how much I could order and I feel I still over ordered because I could not finish my main course. That said, everything was AMAZING! If you want slightly elevated traditional Oaxaca food - this is the spot. Definitely get the guacamole and cheese and the black mole with chicken. The guacamole came with this hot sauce that was honestly so good i wish i could have taken a whole bottle home. Divine!

Had a lovely evening here. The service was fantastic! So kind, and gave good recommendations. We had the short rib, the pork belly and the garnachas. All were very flavorful. The mole was wonderful. A great spot run but great people. Cheers from Canada!

Best meal of my oaxaca trip!!! Must order the caldo de piedra - shrimp was so sweet, fish and broth flavorful and light Ceviche was also great Short ribs with mole / good mole for a first timer! Ofrenda negroni also worth the try

I had the most incredible dining experience at this restaurant in Oaxaca. The tomato salad with quesillo was outstanding — fresh, full of flavor, and beautifully balanced with the creamy richness of the local cheese. Even more unforgettable was the mole with octopus. The mole was deep, complex, and perfectly seasoned, while the tender octopus made it truly unique and extraordinary. The atmosphere was authentic and welcoming, and the service attentive yet relaxed, making the entire evening feel special. This restaurant captures the very essence of Oaxacan cuisine — bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and dishes prepared with heart. If you’re looking for an authentic and memorable culinary experience in Oaxaca, this place is an absolute must 🙂

CRUDO is a small 6-seater bar restaurant in Oaxaca that offers Japanese-inspired fusion cuisine using local Oaxacan ingredients. The establishment, along with other renowned eateries, represents the diverse and excellent gastronomy of Oaxaca. Additionally, CRUDO was featured in the Oaxaca episode of Somebody Feed Phil, further highlighting its appeal and distinctiveness.

A perfect balance of innovation, tradition, and exclusivity

This place is just insane! My husband and I went for the tasting menu and enjoyed so much that we reserved the next day to have the private experience with the chef, two days in a roll. We just could not have enough! The creativity of the food, mix of flavors, exclusive experience, kindness of the staff, all was perfect. The menu had 10 courses or chapters, as they say. The shrimp amuse bouche was delicious, the tuna sample with fruits was out of this world and the chef sushi were my favorites. But, truly, all was really good. I wish I had CRUDO in my neighborhood to taste all the new chef’s creations.

A great restaurant! We managed to get a table for two for the degustation menu at the last minute (normally, a reservation is required). It’s pricey for Oaxaca - about €70 per person, but absolutely worth it. The ingredients are incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the dishes were unlike anything we’d tried before. The service was impeccable.

We were very excited to try the chefs omakase experience at Crudo, having seen or heard about the restaurant on several Tv and travel blogs. Ultimately we were a bit disappointed. The chef was personable and engaging, the atmosphere at the chefs counter was intimate and comfortable. The young man serving drinks was charming and efficient. However, we felt let down by the food, only the first two courses were at the level of taste, quality and originality that we expected. To start was an oyster inside a Oaxacan cheese "bubble", it was interesting and very original, the liquor in the oyster shell was particularly tasty. Next was a trio of tuna cuts, all were of outstanding quality. I would have loved to have had some soy sauce, the black bean "soy" that came with it was rather bland and one dimensional. The other 6-7 courses all fell flat, I didn't really care for the flavor of the fish, they were mostly cooked items and to be frank two of them smelled "fishy". Even the unagi, usually a favorite of mine, failed to meet expectations. After the meal the chef took us on a tour the other half of the restaurant next door where you can eat a la carte. I wished we had eaten there, so we could have just ordered sushi.

This is a very special Dining experience…They host four 2 hour very limited seatings at the counter watching the 2 local chefs prepare everything in front of you…fabulous integration of local special flavors in unusual but with delightful traditional Japanese elements…nori, salmon/tuna sashimi, soft shell crab but surprise elements of pickled jicama, chapulines, moles, many infused peppers…fixed price 9 courses dinner but compared to similar US establishments was very reasonable…
Craig D — Google review
By offering Omakase, an impression is created that one would get a Japanese dinner. Unfortunately it is a weird combination of Japanese cuisine and very strong Mexican sauces damaging the taste and among 9 petite dishes they serve, not a single one was good, the unagi was coming close. First time I witnessed the possibility of damaging blue fin tuna taste in its purity. Also the first time I ate more after Omakase. They did a good job explaining their effort and the place is decent, my expectations were high due to the Michelin list and the price point. Also the place has no sign whatsoever so it is confusing if one is early.

Diego is a rockstar! I had such a fun time at the smaller tasting room eating unique foods and drinking great wine. I was the only person for my reservation time, so I was able to chat with Diego and learn more about the foods being prepared. My favorites were the oyster with oaxacan cheese, and the bluefin tuna. They also have a small bar inside with food service called Cru Cru. The bartenders were super nice and make some great cocktails! I was also able to try the 1st sake ever made in Mexico. The bar has a chill vibe with great music at a low volume, a fish tank, and fish projected on the wall. Highly recommend both the bar and the tasting menu!

Taco restaurant
Tacos Del Carmen has been a beloved spot since 1977, serving up a variety of tacos, quesadillas, and memelas. The friendly staff behind the comal are known for their delicious agua de jamaica (hibiscus water) to complement the flavorful offerings. One of their standout specialties is the Tacos de flor de calabaza (squash blossom tacos), which feature fresh, vegetarian-friendly ingredients wrapped in freshly made corn tortillas.
So good we went back for more the next day. It's a bit of chaos, but just trust the process. Tacos are approx 28$ (pesos) each and the salsas are good and spicy. They're best known for the Chile relleno taco - it's a must.
Anastasia H — Google review
The hype is legit, mi amigos. This is one time where the emperor DOES have a new suit--and only the special can appreciate it. I ate here before I knew they were featured in the Netflix series, so my mind being blown was wholly due to the amazing food. Let's start with the fact that the sweet abuelas make all their tortillas from scratch. Rolling, kneading, everything ground and processed the way nature intended. So chewy, so corny, so perfect. Then there's the tacos themselves. In runner-up, we have the delicious Flor de Calabaza (y Champiñón) con Quesillo, probably the most perfect veg taco ever created. Tied with that is the Chile Relleno, bursting with capsaicin and flavor. And if I hadn't returned to the same stall that same evening, I would already have been satisfied. But I did come back for their evening menu, and that's when I had the greatest taco I'll probably ever had on this earth: Empanada de Amarillo con Pollo. Picture the fluffiest tortilla you've ever had enclosing the most savory, umami salsa amarillo you can imagine. Add to that juicy--and I cannot emphasize enough, JUICY--strips of chicken. And top it all with the greatest herb Americans have never heard of: hoja santa (holy herb). I could write sonnets about how much I love hoja santa, but then this review would be a tome. Let's just say that the combination of their amarillo, pollo and hoja santa is the stuff of dreams--delicious, savory, lip-smacking dreams. I loved this taco so much, I went back for it again before leaving Oaxaca--and found to my delight that it's one of the items they offer during the day AND night. I think I ate about 5 in total. You don't want to know how often I fantasize about this taco now that I'm state-side. Pretty sure it would make the holy herb feel much less holy.

I ordered the chorizo & quesillo taco, chile relleno taco and flor de calabaza quesadilla. The salsas have good flavor and are spicy, the food was just ok. Nothing extraordinary just a good spot to catch a quick breakfast. We went twice and it seemed busy but they served quickly.

Empanadas with the yellow stew and shredded chicken was yummy. The drinks could be colder as it was a scorching day (maybe ask for the bottles at the bottom of the ice box!). We paid 300 pesos in total for 4 empanadas and 3 drinks. Very limited seating so be prepared to perch in the corner and scoff your taco!

Amazing rolled tacos (tacos placeros) filled with beans, quesillos and other fillings of choice. My fav filling was chile relleno. The ladies roast the rolled tacos on comal to give the tortilla crispy texture. My husband’s favourite was salsa de chicarron. Memelas with quesillos are also a treat. You know the place is good because there are so many locals waiting for their food. We went back twice.
Juyoon S — Google review
Super popular with tourists, thankfully not too many people the day I came. I got chile relleno and mushroom tacos, could've done with more flavor for the mushroom. Also got an empanada with amarillo (yellow mole) with chicken - SUPER tasty flavor, really enjoyed that. The sauce is also quite liquidy. Everything made on the spot so it's hot, and there are three salsas you can add at your leisure. 30MXN each per taco, 60 MXN for the empanada.

We heard a lot about this place and happy to try. We ordered several tacos, but a man who charges the order said no more tacos, tlayudas only. We were happy to try that also, however we noticed that two tlayudas was already cooked and waiting. In the mean time they were cooking tacos too! We got our food, people who came after us they got theirs tacos. Tlayudas that we got very dry and has no flavor. It was a huge disappointment. And there is a serious hygiene problem too. I am not expecting a super clean place but what we saw was not ok.

The friendly staff is eager to answer any questions about Oaxaca and the restaurant's offerings. Founded by two Americans passionate about Oaxacan culinary traditions, El Destilado aims to provide exceptional food and mezcal in a casual setting for both locals and travelers.
One of our best meals in Oaxaca. Extremely intricate dishes. This is a tiny place and the meal took forever, several hours, but it was very good and worthit. It was honestly better than our michelin meals in town at Los Danzantes and others. Every single dish was good. Sauce flavors were incredible. They were also very accommodating of our restrictions. The pictures don’t do this justice but if you’re a food you need to go here

For the price paid, it was good but did not meet expectations. The space was a regular interior design, though we had a whole (small) room to ourselves since the restaurant was empty. We had both heard good things so we’re looking forward to a great experience. The chef took into account our food restrictions. We had the 9 course tasting plus pairing. Per person it was 3200 pesos before tip; $178. This included the pairing plus 2 bottles of water. For the money, Pitiona was a better food, better service and better view/design. At El Destilado, the tastings were all very small which was fine. The 8 pairing of alcohol was also too much including cocktail, sparkling wine, beer, white wine, sake, red wine, cocktail. Phew. Next time I would just order wine by the glass. The service did not feel different than any other restaurant, and for the price paid I would expect more. My favorite courses were the bite of fish (trout); the mushrooms, and the delicious ice cream dessert.

My friend and I decided to conclude our trip in Oaxaca by dining at the best restaurant, El Destilado according to reviews. We were so excited but the whole experience was underwhelming and disappointing. We were seated on the rooftop. The ambiance doesn't tell you that we were paying $6000 about $350US for a dinner for 2. We thought we'll maybe the food will redeem the experience. The 9 course tasting menu along with the drinks came and went , for the amount of money, we were expecting to be wowed. But NO! There were a lot of times where we neither have food nor drinks. The service was mediocre at best. The missing crowd on a Saturday night should have hinted us.

Beautiful restaurant. Loved the decor and atmosphere. Our servers were great and answered all of our questions. The food was immaculate and we actually came back a second time. Highly recommend this restaurant and also ask about their 6 course dining experience if you’re feeling fancy. The a la carte is limited to mainly tacos. We would have loved to try the dining experience if we knew about it. Other than that, great experience.

Just an incredible meal— each course was absolutely divine! And they all flowed so well together, each item paired harmoniously with what came before it. Simply put, one of my most favorite dining experiences. The staff was super attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. The food was amazing and well-executed. Thank you for an absolutely amazing dinner experience!

From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but their upstairs terrace is cute! The drinks are phenomenal, of course they have mezcal and they have one of the best! One of the drinks had a very interesting garnish which was something I have never seen before. Their prices are quite pricey though, like $250 for fish tacos. They were yummy and delicious but I do not think it was worth the hefty price tag. Great service and very friendly staff. The desserts were AMAZING and an evening here for dinner or for some drinks is a great bet for a great night in the center of Oaxaca.

We were the only ones having the tasting menu on a Sunday night, and we really enjoyed it! Food was wonderful — filling without overeating. My favorite course was the flavorful tomato soup. They accommodated my boyfriend’s shellfish allergy with delicious substitutes. Server was nice and spoke both English and Spanish. Tasted mexcal — we did drinks a la carte

Honestly one of the best gastronomic experiences I’ve had. We were the only guests who had the 9 course meal with pairing, so we had the chefs undivided attention. Each dish was carefully constructed and built upon self-created ingredients such as miso and other fermentations. Both the cocktails and the food were extraordinary, food with vision!

Overall great atmosphere and drinks. We didn’t eat food, but this place did come recommended by many. It was our second favourite cocktail bar in Oaxaca, but still highly recommend visiting for the delicious drinks, large bar offering and service. The Food was delicious! Had the vegetarian tacos and they were so delicious. The molotes were also delicious! Honestly everything was so fresh and good. And the Mushroom soups was so fresh and tasty. Never had anything like it but it was 10/10! But the star of the show was the dessert. We had the corn cake. Omg. It was like nothing I’ve ever tasted but it was so moist and fresh! I stopped by here with just a few hours to spare before I needed to go to the airport. I had three cocktails, each one better than the next, and the sirloin tacos were amazing. I was there pretty early (around 3 pm), so there wasn't much of a vibe, but my hotel was just across the street, so I do know that the place gets pretty lively in the evenings and I would recommend making a reservation if you're trying to go for dinner or evening drinks!

Walked here on a Tuesday afternoon without a reservation. The pitcher of juice and basket of bread came complementary to the table. We both got a salad and soup. The salad did not have enough dressing but the carrot soup was delicious. My partner got the steak and I got the chicken. The steak was bland but the chicken had an incredible amount of flavor from the savory, sweet, and tangy sauce. It's too bad the salad has so little dressing because that was the only fiber in the meal. For dessert they gave us free jello. The place was good but not worth making a trip for. There were a good amount of locals also dinning here. The meal came out to MX$245 for two people.

The food here was absolutely delicious! And the service as well! We got the chilaquiles rojos and the enfrijoladas and both of our plates were licked clean almost. My husband who normally doesn't eat much bread, took the telera they gave us to soak up all his chilaquiles juices. We also bought two of their salsa machas, asked them to double wrap it and they triple wrapped it! So it would not cause an accident in our luggages. Highly recommend!

Had breakfast this morning, the food was excellent. The breakfast combo (salmon and spinach omelet) and price value was amazing. Liked the salsa and onion side dishes. Lots of food for only 90 pesos. Liked the outdoor setting. The service was fast and the waitress was very attentive. Coffee was the only thing that disappointed me but it was your regular Mexican coffee included and it is refillable. So people can see the value there.

Food was ok not very memorable. When i sat down the waiter brought out a complimentary plate of Papaya with cream cheese-- O didn't eat it as I am not a fan of Pappaya. I ordered the chef speciaof the day Eggs with Chorizo and Gouda cheese. The plate came with carrots and a xicama salad which i felt was refreshing. The highlight for me was the pickled onions and yellow chiles on the table. Next to that was a red salsa that is a little spicy. They also brought out freshly made Tortillas with the eggs. Service was fantastic however a little slow since it was the Sunday morning rush. Atmosphere was very family oriented, with people conversating, laughing and enjoying each other's company. Price was good as it felt less expensive than restaurants in the Center Oaxaca. I would go back again for dinner to try the other parts of the menu.

Zandunga Sabor Istmeño is a trendy spot that offers traditional dishes made with locally sourced ingredients and creative mezcal cocktails. It focuses on serving regional cuisine from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, featuring unique flavors and ingredients such as fresh seafood and lowland animals like armadillo and iguana. Some must-try dishes include tamales de cambray, a savory-sweet tamal, and the famous estofadas stews.
What an amazing restaurant. This place is a wonderful example of something that I love to experienc in different places. They take Oaxacan food, a cuisine that is rich with flavor, texture and aroma but born of humble origins, and they elevate it in the context of fine dining. The result is a spectacular experience that presents all the best aspects of traditional dishes with care and respect. The embellishments are minimal and only serve to frame the food of Oaxaca and lavish upon it the same love and attention that any good food deserves. Don't miss a chance to eat here.

The food itself was enjoyable, no complaints there. However, the service was disappointing. The waiter with glasses didn’t seem to care much about cleanliness or customer service. My table was visibly dusty, and when I pointed out that the plate was also dusty and asked for a new one, there was no apology—just indifference. I ended up wiping the table down myself with a napkin. What really sealed it was being asked for a tip after all that. Sorry, but good service earns gratitude, not demands. Not impressed.
Norris L — Google review
My wife and I went here on our honeymoon. The food was delicious and I especially recommend the sweet elote tamale! We did however have a horrible service experience. Our server was very sweet and “recommended” a glass of the house wine since it was our honeymoon. We had already ordered cocktails but she insisted on having us try the wine and when we said it was nice poured us glasses. Given the context it seemed the house wine was a gift from the restaurant for our honeymoon. Although we honestly didn’t want wine, we forced ourselves to finish it to show gratitude for the kind gesture. When the bill came we were shocked to see the wine on it for 390 pesos! I alerted the restaurant of the error but they said we had accepted the wine and refused to take it off. So basically we were forced to pay for wine we didn’t even want on our honeymoon! This is not the type of service you expect at a fine dining experience. It was obviously a communication error, but seeing as both my wife and I had the impression that the wine was complimentary they should have taken at least one glass off the bill. It really tainted the entire experience of dining here.

Really enjoyed this restaurant. Struggled to find gluten free items, but the majority of the menu was gluten free here! We got 3 dishes to share, and they were all delicious. Courtyard where we ate was beautiful. The mezcal drink we had was also phenomenal. The best drink we had in Oaxaca! Would recommend!

This restaurant has a top tier vibe, menu options, and flavors. The menu is a true blend of traditional food and deluxe dining. The mezcalita was wonderful, and the mojito with mezcal was memorable - one of the best drinks I had in Oaxaca with plenty of mint to complement the mezcal. I ordered Veggie Alambres and a Soup. The Alambres is hearty, and I kept some for leftovers with my own tortillas at home since there was more filling than the tortillas provided. The soup was healing, and I squeezed some limes into it to enhance the flavor. It wasn’t necessarily strong flavored, but it was healthy and simple. It was the type of thing that makes your body feel very cared for. I appreciated that there are chips and three types of salsa provided when you order, which allowed my friends and I to have something to hold us over until the meal came. I will say, I have eaten at many restaurants in Mexico, and this was some of the oddest service I’ve had. The server took everyone’s drink order but mine and two others (we were a party of 13) and I ended up asking her to put in my drink and food order because my friends had all already received their food and drink. This set off the timing of the meal, and we were at the location for a good three hours total. In Mexico, always allocate 30-40 minutes for the bill. I don’t expect fast service, but being skipped and unable to get the server’s attention until everyone else had been served was beyond a unique experience. Overall, it was a good experience - but one of my pricier meals in Oaxaca and for the food and experience provided, I wouldn’t say it’s a “must visit” but does have some unique options worth trying.

Loved the vibe at Zandunga, relaxed, welcoming, and full of Oaxacan charm. I had the ceviche and the corn tamal, and both were incredible. The ceviche was super fresh and well-balanced, and the tamal was soft, slightly sweet, and full of flavor. Definitely a place I’d come back to.

We had lovely dinner in Zanduga. We tried for entradas 5 tacos with 16 different taste, definitely the best tacos we tried in Mexico so far in 7 days. We give 10/10 for this very rich with meat tacos. For main meal we ordered pork ribs marinated in chilli with ananas and mashed potato. There is no words i can describe how this pork ribs were tender, real delicacy. I am giving 100/100 for this meal. Another meal was tongue in mole sauce. Tongue was tender and great, mole is something you need to try while in Oaxaca but for our european (croatian taste) it was too much. But everyhing was good, we are just not used to this type of taste. We know about goulash and this looked like it. Craft beer is fantastic, very drinkable. If you ask me would I return here my answer is definitely YES!

Cabuche is a cozy spot that feels more like someone's living room than a restaurant. The chef has mastered the art of creating a red posole broth that bursts with chili flavor without overwhelming heat. Their menu offers loving interpretations of classic Mexican street food and market favorites, with the vegetarian pozole being a standout dish. Instead of using meat, they incorporate mushrooms and various vegetables to create their red, white, and green varieties of pozole.
We had the Burrito con Pollo and the Enchiladas con Mole, and they were absolutely delicious. The mole might even be the best we've tasted in Oaxaca! The restaurant might not have the most modern or aesthetically striking appearance from the outside, but don’t let that fool you. The quality of the food is outstanding, with authentic local flavors that truly impressed us. At around $10 per dish, it’s also very affordable. The waitresses were also very friendly and attentive. One thing to note is that you can only pay with cash, but there’s an ATM conveniently located right across the street, so this isn’t a problem. Overall, this restaurant should have a rating of at least 4.5/5. If you’re looking for authentic Oaxacan food with great service, this spot is a must-try!

My meal was delicious and healthy. I got a glass of the orange water and a corral burrito, which came with a beautiful and fresh side salad. The main dining room has big doors that open onto the street, so there’s a lot of natural light and people watching. This place only takes cash, as you’ll see from the various signs on the walls and on the menu.

Lovely little restaurant. My second time here in 2024, last time I had the pozole and this time my wife and I shared the bartered shrimp tacos and black mole enmolada with plantain, and everything was 10/10. The agua tamarindo was also really good. The batter on the shrimp was light and tasty, not greasy. The black mole was decadent. The thinner tortillas here add an elevated feel to an authentic local experience.

Great food, service and atmosphere at a very good price. After eating at many highly rated restaurants, I was very happy with the quality and variety of food at Cabuche. The green pozole with pork was super flavorful, the birria quesadillas were delicious and the tajaso huaracha was my favorite. They have indoor and out door seating and the restaurant is clean. Definitely recommend this place.

Fantastic food, we enjoyed the pozole, fresh salad with grapefruit, radishes and more! We also got a Birria taco for later! Excellent for the family with small and big sizes of salads and pozoles. Authentic flavors, attentive service, good portions, competitive prices. Different lunch specials during the week. The outdoor dining area is nice, garden-like with its pomegranate tree and numerous plants. Wifi is available. We returned a few days later for breakfast and wow! The chilaquiles with salsa are stupendous, lots of flavor but very mild. The huitlacoche omelet was very good too. Love the coffee too. Most breakfasts are a little under $10 USD including fruit or juice and coffee.

The food was fresh and tasty with a twist on local flavors. The Huaraches were good but not as distinctive as you can get with street vendors. The location is in a quieter chic part of the city and the space was pretty spacious. The grapefruit salad was the best thing we ate though. It was very refreshing and the most unique thing we ate in the city.

I personally loved everything about this place! The setting, the food, the ambience, etc.! My friends and I came here for a quick and chill dinner, and we were actually the only ones in there at the time, which might've been cause for worry about food poisoning, but no worries we were totally fine! It might've just been because nobody else had been craving mediterranean food in Oaxaca at the time, who knows. The atmosphere was super neat, and the decorations made me feel like I'd stepped into a different country altogether. I ordered the falafel sandwich? with a side of couscous? or some type of quinoa salad (my goodness I need to educate myself on the actual names of these dishes) and I tried some of my friend's falafel bowl. Both were amazing in my opinion! I'm just a big mediterranean food lover, I'm not picky. I also ordered some chai, which was little more earthy than I like but ah well. At least the kombucha my friend ordered was good. Staff were super chill and very kind, we tipped them a little more than we'd anticipated but ah well I think they deserve it. Overall awesome place if you're craving some mediterranean food.

Our 3rd night in 10 days eating at El Morocco in Jalatlaco/Oaxaca. Alejandra & staff not only provided excellent service but delivered with exceptional food. Started with plato mediterráneo, pincho keftas, pincho merguez, & briouates de queso de cabra y aceitunas negras. We paid a corkage fee for our bottle of wine. El Morocco delivers with exceptional food, service & value! ¡Gracias Alejandra!

Rather disappointing dinner. A couscous without dried fruits like raisins, apricots and almonds is hardly a good couscous, plus a few flavourless chickpeas and we have a boring copy of a Moroccan dish. Not recommended

Came in to escape the rain and had a wonderful snack of mousaka and beer with couscous. The owner, Alessandra was delightful and was very welcoming. I would definitely recommend:)

I have never been to Morocco so I can’t speak to the authenticity, but the food sure was good. On top of that, they have a selection of Oaxacan beers and the staff can help you find just the right one.

Surprisingly good! I was a bit sceptical of having Moroccan food in Oaxaca, glad I went in. The upstair area deco kind of cliche but kind of sets the mood. Dishes are well served and quite delicious. My only suggestion goes to the tea section, got the mint tea, they should extract the leaves before serving otherwise it gets to concentrated and bitter.

La Mezcaloteca is a reservations-only private bar in the city, offering an educational experience with a library of over 100 mezcals. Whether you're new to mezcal or consider yourself a connoisseur, this spot provides valuable insights and knowledge about the spirit. The passionate staff ensures that visitors have a great experience while learning about the different varieties of mezcal and its production process. It's an ideal place to start your journey into understanding and appreciating the world of mezcal.
If you want an educational experience within the world of agave spirits, this is the place for you. My husband and I are pretty familiar with how mezcal is made, the different varietals, the different things that can affect the flavors where it comes from, etc. But yet, in an hour here I felt like I still only knew such a small portion of all there is to know when it comes to mezcal. Our guide created a beautiful sampling of five mezcals for my husband based on his love of Tobala. He was guided through an array of Tobalas from different regions, elevations, and blends with other agaves. Our guide curated a very creative sampling of five mezcals based on my inquiry, an interest in finding varietals that are more obscure and basically impossible to find in the US. The amount of knowledge I (attempting to) consume in the one hour wasn’t overwhelming, but it was intense because these people really know their products. And that’s truly a testament to their love of the spirit. But it’s not just the spirit. It’s the nature.. the people.. there’s just so much that goes into making a mezcal and that is showcased in the tastings at Mezcaloteca. I am sure there are other places you can go to try mezcals. And there are certainly other places you can go to learn as well. But La Mezcaloteca is truly an amazing experience that you shouldn’t miss.

We went there for a mezcal tasting, really insightful and fulfilling experience. Learnt a lot about mezcal. If you are looking for a tasting that offers information and history about mezcal, I will recommend here. We bought a bottle of mezcal, it is from local producers in Oaxaca.

We (couple) made a reservation beforehand and arrived with enthusiasm for our tasting. After staff interrupted our tasting multiple times for longer periods, we decided to cancel. Cannot recommend.
Sascha — Google review
The tasting experience was incredible. The host walked us through the process of picking the different species of agave and how each mezcal is made from traditional to modern.

Great place to learn about mezcal. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
Camille R — Google review
Patricia did a great job educating two newbies to mezcal and its huge number of varieties. They have access to microdistillers of some small batch creations with many wild and cultured agave examples to try. We enjoyed the experience and highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn about this spirit and those who make it.
Paul W — Google review
While our experience wasn't what you normally see from their posts online (we may have come right when they were opening and the girl seemed new), we were blessed to have come in at the perfect timing. Don Yanet was visiting and recommended her Ensamble to try along with an amazing Tobaxiche Amarillo I'm still thinking about. I will go back since their mezcal selection is 5-star and I hope to get the full educational experience.
Kevin K — Google review
Amazing experience!! Very knowledgeable staff. My husband and I each tried 5 mezcals, and the favors were tailored well to our individual tastes. We ended up buying a few bottles because the mezcals here were drastically more interesting than anything else we have tried while in Oaxaca or the United States. I love that they support small local production as well as female producers. A must go, book in advance!!

Oaxacan restaurant
Tlayudas El Negro is a casual restaurant with live music and a welcoming atmosphere. The place is clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the service is attentive and quick. The tlayudas are described as delicious, crispy, flavorful, and generously topped with fresh ingredients like pickled onions, guacamole, and smoky red salsa. Some patrons recommend trying the costillo as an example of regional food.
First time ever eating a Tlayuda and I was very impressed with the flavor..oh my! The staff were so helpful since we couldn’t speak Spanish well. They walked us through each item. The atmosphere was very serene especially after passing the grill on the way in. Will definitely come back for validation.
Pete6769 — Google review
I just had a filling lunch here and I'm stuffed! I ordered the Tlayuda premium (300 pesos) that came with carne asada and ribs. It also came with sides of avocado and onions. The meal is huge, you get two plates one for the Tlayuda and one for the meats! First the Tlayuda was crispy and the cheese was so good. It's so cheesy that you could do a cheese pull with it. By itself along with the provided salsas, it's a meal in itself. Now the meat was tasty and not fatty. I really enjoyed the carne asada, it has the fresh off the grill taste. Combining the meat and the Tlayuda made it a wonderful meal. I also had an agua de sabor, lemon flavor. It was like a honey lemon iced tea. It was really refreshing. The restaurant was not busy at all an hour after it opened. It's a large space and was very comfortable. Overall I recommend coming here for lunch or dinner. It will fill you up. If you're two people, I highly recommend just ordering one Tlayuda premium and sharing it. We ended up taking some home since we ordered two. If you're in the neighborhood, I definitely recommend giving it a try!
Arthur M — Google review
First off I like my food, loved the live performances but the service was extremely lacking, especially towards the end when the restaurant was getting empty, my cuñado & I ordered 2 shots but were waiting for orange slices. We couldn't wait anymore since we had to go so we took them neat and asked for the bill. My wife and cuñados tlayuda was folded??? Never seen that before but they also said it was "meh" (tasajo y cecina.) Trago de mezcal was fairly priced and decent burn/flavor. Probably not going back unless someone wants to. Let me know if you know of a spot I should check out 😁
CherryGarcia666 — Google review
The place is very clean with live music and the waiters are very friendly and helpful while deciding what to buy. But, the food itself I’m not a big fan of. It might be just me and my tastes, but I felt the tlayuda was a little dry. I shared a single tlayuda with a friends as it was huge.
Bharat A — Google review
Very tasty dishes, not only tlayudas but also the other items are really really good, service is attentive and quick, live music is nice too.
Fabian V — Google review
Suitable for vegetarians. 😊 They were very accomodating to top the tlayudas with nopal (cactus). Great place to try warm tlayudas against the background of live music and jamaica (hibiscus) drink for a good price! Very smoky location and poor ventilation unfortunately. Other food like tostadas was not served warm. Pay in cash or expect to be charged 3% extra for credit card payment.
Frances W — Google review
This place is clean! I didn't get sick. I had the Costilla Tlayuda. It was great! The menu doesn't say there is beer and mezcal. But, they do sell it. The staff was friendly and they had live music. The place was a little smokey due to the cooking. But, it was manageable. I highly recommend this place.
Jonathan M — Google review
I happened to walk by when I was looking for dinner. The reviews looked good so I decided to go in. Live music by a guitarist/singer, the smell of a 'smoker' (the cooking device). Not crowded at 4pm, three other occupied tables. I asked the server for recommendations since I had never seen or eaten a tlayuda. She recommended the costillo as an example of regional food. I said OK. See photo. The meat on top is cooked pork rib. Inside the tortilla is mashed black beans, cheese, and something creamy. It was good...not my favorite flavor, but good. A worthwhile culinary and cultural experience.

Middle Eastern restaurant
Nestled in the vibrant culinary landscape of Oaxaca, Adamá has quickly become a standout since its debut in January 2021. This charming Middle Eastern restaurant offers a delightful array of Mediterranean classics such as shawarma, hummus, falafel, and baklava. For many locals, Adamá serves as an exciting introduction to these beloved international flavors.
We absolutely love this place; it's one of our favorites. The service is attentive without being overbearing, the food is always excellent, and the ambiance is cozy and romantic. And one of the most important details is that many places in town do not have is an excellent selection of music that allows you to have a conversation without needing to yell. We come here at least twice a month if not more. It's also a great place for gathering with friends for a nice mellow night of dinner and drinks!

Adama has chill vibes, is tucked any in a little corner off the street, and serves some intensely good food! The atmosphere is instantly relaxing, and the wait staff (and owner, who welcomed us) were friendly and attentive. Highly recommend the pickles and pickled olives - they import them from Israel! Oh, and get there early if you can! We missed the salads as they were all out when we arrived less than on hour before closing. Will definitely be going back.

Everything — the food, the service, the ambiance — was top notch. Our server, Pablo, was amazing and suggested we try the lamb hummus. It was absolutely out of this world — tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We finished with the tahini ice cream, which was creamy, unique, and the perfect way to end the meal. Highly recommend this place. Can’t wait to come back!

As a California native who has access to hundreds of Middle Eastern restaurants, this was some of the best Middle Eastern food I’ve had - especially here in Oaxaca of all places. Seating is limited, but we were able to walk-in and get seated right away. The restaurant is tucked away off one of the most charming streets I’ve ever seen in Oaxaca, and has a beautiful entryway covered by lush vegetation, leading to an intimate courtyard surrounded by brick floors and terracota walls. We ordered the Hummus with Shawarma, Falafel, Salad, and Cauliflower; was a perfect amount for 2 people and would recommend everything we tried.

Tacos ROY is a popular local chain with multiple locations in the city, including Valerio Trujano and Abasola/Pino Suarez. The standout dish here is the pozole, but the tacos are also highly recommended. Visitors rave about the Oaxacan cheese used in the tacos, particularly enjoying options like rib, pastor, and skirt steak. The restaurant has a standard atmosphere and can be a bit slow to open at times.
So you like tacos eh?! Well this is a good place to pacman your way to your heart's content. They offer a good variety of tacos, but ya gotta arrive early especially if you like special viscerals and meats. The atmosphere varies depending on the location.

This taco spot in Oaxaca quickly became our favorite! The place is simple, yet the menu offers a great variety, and the service is warm and friendly. The only downside is that in the evening, you might have to wait in line for a table. However, when we went again right after opening, we had no trouble finding a seat. My personal favorite was the quesadilla with cheese and ham, while my husband loved the bistec tacos. If you're in Oaxaca and craving delicious tacos, this place is definitely worth a visit!
Arnita H — Google review
Tacos are the best tacos in town. Would recommend. We waited in line for about 45 minutes and it was worth it. Fast service, and somewhat friendly. But it’s understandable because this place is extremely busy.

Super good tacos! Fast and friendly service. Even helping me with my horrible Spanish. Definitely recommend and I’ll be returning.
Slang 4 — Google review
This place is absolutely worth the hype, and you know it’s actually great because instead of a long queue of influencer types waiting for aesthetic pics, you may get a queue but it’s mostly locals with some curious foodie tourists in the mix. The menu is all in Spanish so maybe look it up online if you don’t want to feel confused on arrival, but it’s all delicious so you can’t really go wrong! I waited about ten minutes to be seated but the queue was in front of the food prep station, which allowed me to take pictures of everything I liked the look of as they made it and that helped me order! A great local spot, a little rough around the edges but food to die for and an authentic experience. I will be dreaming about Tacos Roy after leaving Oaxaca 😆❤️‍🔥

This place is amazing. Over 3 nights of staying in the area I've tried a variety of tacos and also the quesadillas. I can't stop coming back, if you're in doubt, go in. I don't think you'll be disappointed. The wait staff are amazing, they work fast and hard and they all take care of you.
Nabil W — Google review
This is a big restaurant with an extensive menu of Mexican food. Tacos, quesadillas, burritas, and all that you can imagine in many different flavors. It combines the authenticity and flavors of street food, with the comfort of going to a restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious. I strongly recommend anything costilla-flavored. This certainly ranks among the best tacos we had in Mexico, and we have a pretty strong list. There are many different sauces as well, all of them superb, especially the avocado one. Unfortunately, the service was not good. It was extremely slow. We had to wait for around 10 minutes for the waiter to bring us the menus, then the tacos took 20 minutes more after that, and another long wait for paying. Considering the nature of the food, we expected a much faster service. We wanted some quick tacos and had to sit for about an hour in a restaurant for that. I still strongly recommend this place, especially if you want to sit and relax a bit. It gets hot in there as it is not well ventilated, but it is comfortable, has nice bathrooms, and again, the food is incredible.

Memelas Doña Vale is a renowned food stall located in the Central de Abastos, Oaxaca City's largest food market. Valentina Hernandez, also known as Doña Vale, has been serving her signature memelas for over 30 years. These traditional Oaxacan street foods are made from corn dough and topped with black beans, cheese, and salsa.
Memelas Doña Vale lives up to its reputation with absolutely delicious memelas at an incredible value. The flavors are authentic, and it’s no surprise this spot is so popular. There was a long line when I went on the weekend, but it moved relatively quickly, and the wait was worth it. One thing to note, as others have mentioned, is to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings while you’re there. If you’re in Oaxaca, this is a must-visit spot for a truly local experience!

Epic. Truly. Some places are overrated. This place is about tradition and consistency. The most incredible experience! Especially having the queen, Dona Vale herself sit and have breakfast at our table. A truly unforgettable experience. On top we ran into @mario.come.oaxaca for breakfast. Magical.

Outstanding Breakfast for Us For The Second Consecutive Year at Doña Vale. We Just Had To Come Back and She and Her Small Staff Did NOT Disappoint. Tried the pork tacos first to change it up but the Mermelas both with Morita Salsa (sauce) and the Tomato Salsa Were Off The Scale Good. The Hot Chocolate with Water is To Die For.
John E — Google review
Came here to say I tried it. These weren’t the best memelas I had but overall good. The tortillas are made fresh and sure tasted like it. The meat was cooked well and the sauce and salsas were good. I like the atmosphere the most of the hustle and bustle of the market. I was the only tourist the day I went say it was nice talking to locals and hearing the opinions about the food and what to order. I think the price is a bit steep for memelas but again, she was featured on Netflix and always has a line of people waiting to try her food.
Lauren C — Google review
Doña Vale is an absolute Oaxacan street-food treasure! Their memeles are nothing short of phenomenal, each bite delivers rich, earthy flavor with just the right balance of masa, queso, and savory toppings. These traditional Oaxacan treats are elevated to perfection, with house-made dough that’s light yet satisfying and toppings that pop with freshness and authenticity. The setup channels street-food energy with warmth and authenticity, and the team is friendly, welcoming, and passionate about sharing Oaxaca’s culinary heritage. Whether you go for the classic memel with beans and cheese, or try one of their creative specials, each one is crafted with care and bursting with flavor. For a genuine, unforgettable taste of Oaxacan street cuisine, memelas done right! Doña Vale Netflix Street Food is a must-stop. Exceptional quality and flavor in every bite!

La Cocina de Humo is a restaurant in Oaxaca's Mixe region, known for its incredible dishes prepared by chef Thalia Barrios. The food is described as beautiful, intriguing, and delicious, with highlights including mole Coloradito, tamales, yellow and blue corn tortillas, and plantain and chocolate dessert. The chef serves food as she makes it, resulting in a different experience every time. Visitors are advised to arrive hungry due to the generous portions.
La Cocina de Humo provided one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this wasn’t just a meal—it was a celebration of local flavors, seasonal ingredients, and the art of cooking. Every dish was prepared right in front of us, showcasing the skill and passion behind each plate. The dishes themselves were unique to the region, highlighting the freshness and depth of local produce. Each bite was absolutely delicious—hands down some of the best food I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was equally special. Dining under the canopy of a majestic 90-year-old Coquito tree, the setting was serene and intimate, making it the perfect place to celebrate my birthday. The peaceful, quiet surroundings made the experience feel even more personal and unique. A special thank you to Carlos for making the evening unforgettable. I’m so grateful for the attention to detail and the genuine warmth that made my birthday dinner one for the books. I will definitely be coming back, and I can’t recommend La Cocina de Humo enough!

Our best and most authentic meal in Oaxaca. We did the experience (meal), not the cooking class. Paula was an incredible cook and guide. Each dish was enjoyable and I couldn’t decide my favorite. A must do! Close walking distance from hotels in el centro. Clean, comfortable space.
Dustin N — Google review
When I first heard of La Cocina De Humo through NYT’s, “36 Hours in Oaxaca,” I approached the recommendation with a healthy dose of skepticism. Will it deliver on the promise of good traditional Oaxacan food in an authentic kitchen? Will it be burdened or worse, made complacent, by the expectations of North American tourist lore - NYT, Eva Longoria’s travel show? And finally, will it be approachable for a young couple not particularly looking for fine dining? As I stepped into the quaint, spacious courtyard, populated with the proudly displayed Oaxacan earthen cookware, I felt my anxieties slip away, and I was home. Our chef and host for the evening welcomed us into a cosy dining room plus open kitchen, where all the ingredients for our dinner were laid out for us to see. She quickly got to work, stoking the wood-fired oven, rolling out the tortillas, mashing the tomatillos and chiles for the salsa - seemingly all at once. We’re vegetarian, and for the first time in a while, we felt like our dietary preferences were truly catered to, not obliged. The food? It was spread out over 7 courses, packed with flavor, fresh, and surprisingly light on the stomach. We had a tomato potato soup, tortillas with castillo and mole, quesadillas with cheese and beans, squash prepared simply with tomatoes, garlic, and chile, and finally, arroz con leche with mango. The drinks were gorgeous - The agua/leche con maíz surpassed the Salvadoran horchata for me, which is saying a lot. I could taste the smokiness and mild sweetness from the toasted corn and cinnamon in every sip. I’ll dream about it for a long time. La Cocina De Humo is not a restaurant, it’s a unique dining experience, one that I’ll hopefully get to enjoy again.

Sister establishment to Levadura de Olla restaurant, this reservations only “experience” offers a 7 course menu prepared in a wood burning oven and comal in a lovely brick and pottery adorned setting that aims to recreate a traditional Oaxacan village kitchen. We thought the food was as tasty as any we tried during our visit to Oaxaca and the price/value was exceedingly reasonable. Very romantic setting, and bonus, a house cat joined us for some cuddling. Highlight of our week!

This is a truly amazing experience. A few things to note: - The option is for cooking class or where one of the chefs will cook “for” you explaining the provenance / importance of the ingredients and a bit of the history - The aim is to be as close to true as possible of a Oaxacan kitchen - particularly in the rural areas. - The food is delicious just different than what many expect. The ingredients and method are the star. We left incredibly full and learnt a tonne. Our guide (I can’t recall his name) was fantastic. Don’t miss the Tepeche.

I also ordered the mushroom selection with goat cheese and tomato which was excellent, and my husband had fettuccine with shrimp and cheese. It was a healthy size serving and the shrimp was not overcooked. Miguel was our server and he was excellent. With my OK Spanish and his OK English he managed to explain some of the items and helped us make our choices. His good service enhanced our experience. Despite the fact that we were full we ordered the chocolate cake and a cup of their delicious coffee. We shall return!

Yellow mole with wrapped snook in hoja santa and grilled vegetables was really tasty. It went perfectly with the El Tule—a refreshing mix of Mezcal Tehuana Joven, cucumber, basil, and lemon, with a worm chili salt rim. The flavors complemented each other nicely without overpowering the dish.

This place is already well reviewed and our experience was great.cocktails were very good. I'm sorry I forgot exactly what I had, but I believe it was with pineapple mezcal and worms on top. The other with watermelon. We had the suckling pig tacos with chicharon. Fantastic with the guacamole pickled onions and with the house salsa. The regular tacos we got next we're not our favorite as the cheese made them a bit too salty for us and in comparison we preferred the pig tacos. Dessert sampler was also great. I wish it were served with a little bowl of honey as the honey was so good. The place is small so it looks like they extended tables into hallways beyond the restaurant near the bathroom and kitchen. That's where we found ourselves. It was still fine and the meal was still enjoyable. I would give 5stars for eating in the restaurant proper for atmosphere and three for the hallway. However the hall area was quiet and peaceful and still nicely decorated. I'm sure some would even prefer sitting in this area. Wait staff were pleasant and accommodating.

Thunderstorm was about to begin. So glad that this place was right in front of us. We weren't hungry, so we decided to order a dessert sampler and latte. What a pleasant surprise! It was some of the best coffee in Mexico, and their desserts (pastel chocolate, flan, and corn bread) were delicious.

We had a great time at Expendio Tradición. Our server Jose Antonio was kind, attentive, and extremely friendly. His recommendations were on point. We had a Tlayuda de lechon, sopa de flor de calabaza and motolitos de plátano macho. Here is a picture of the first two dishes. We loved it! Gracias Jose! 🙌🏼🫡

Miguel was our server today. Excellent service, friendly & helpful. This was our second visit, each visit has been outstanding. The food is so fresh & creatively served. Muy delicioso!

Everything was wonderful! The food, the presentation, the service. They have menus in English and Spanish, and our server was kind enough to bring us both since we are here to practice Spanish. They were accommodating for our children, and gave great recommendations. My only concern is that we are here on our first night in Oaxaca, and so I’m afraid everywhere else will be a disappointment! Will probably be back for breakfast!!

A great place for dinner and drinks. The food was delicious! My friend and I shared 2 starters: the fish ceviche and the guacamole with chapalinas (grasshoppers!). We also shared 2 main dishes: the octopus and the shrimps, the latter came with a wonderful passionfruit sauce. There was no room for dessert, but we had drinks. I chose the tejate, which was actually quite dessert-like!

Mexican restaurant
La Teca is a small, unassuming restaurant located within the owner's home in Oaxaca City. It offers a taste of under-the-radar flavors from the southeast region of Tehuantepec, showcasing the diverse cuisine of Oaxaca. The dishes feature a combination of sweet and sour flavors, incorporating tropical ingredients like plantains with dry cheese and sour cream.
LaTeca offers incredibly authentic Oaxacan flavors. The mole rojo is absolutely amazing—rich, complex, and full of depth. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked, juicy, and came in a generous portion. While it’s just outside the main neighborhood, it’s only a short, inexpensive cab ride or a pleasant walk, making it well worth the visit. A hidden gem for anyone craving real Oaxacan cuisine.

Went here cause I saw from a tt that apparently the tamale was the best he tried. I ordered almost the same things that he mentioned and I was kind of disappointed. For starters was ordered the garnachas with the bolitas the queso. They were ok if I’m honest the sauce that they use is similar to chipotle so is was new to me. To my surprise I only received one bolita de queso, mind you it’s around the size of a rubber ball. I the ordered the stuffed plantain and again it was underwhelming. Next I ordered the elote tamal and I will say it was the best thing I had there but definitely not for those in search of something savory. The agua de tamarindo was very delicious I will say. Beautiful place and good customer service but overall I don’t recommend since it’s a little on the pricer side. Unless you are in search for very unique flavors

Best dinner we had in Oaxaca, we got the cheese balls, the garnachas, the stuffed pepper and the mole Amarillo, food came to our table Pipping hot, service was excellent. For dessert we got the fried bananas. Perfect ending for a great meal.

I ate at La Teca today and thoroughly enjoyed myself. They have indoor and patio seating. I'm not familiar with food from the Isthmus and the waiter quickly explained the different dishes. I had the Plato Istmeño. It is one of the most expensive dinners at $200 pesos but it had chicken, potatoes, cabbage, plantain, three garnaches and a chili relleno. I asked for a friend who doesn't eat pork and the garnaches and chili relleno both use beef. I had a nice dessert and my bill was $285 including a drink. I plan on returning.

Selva Oaxaca Cocktail Bar is a trendy spot that opened last year, offering refined mezcal cocktails in a beautiful midcentury modern setting. The bar is known for its creative use of ingredients like hoja santa, a tropical plant with aromatic leaves used in Mesoamerican beverages and even chocolates. The menu at Selva Oaxaca Cocktail Bar pays homage to naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt's work, featuring cocktails that blend Mexican and international elements to recreate intricate ecosystems.
A well-deserved ranked cocktail bar! We made reservations for 6 in advance, and we were able to get the full experience of the table service and unique experiential drinks. I was very impressed by the decor as it seemed like all items were thoughtfully curated for the era they were trying to recreate. The service was excellent, and drinks were on point! Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Very nice building, service is great but the cocktails disappointed ☹️ my selva cocktail was too acidic and when I asked they told me it was due to the hierba santa being like that recently 🤔. I asked for a second cocktail Miahuatlán and its flavour was also somehow off. Not sure what happened because in previous visits we had a great time there. We sat near the stairs because inside the main room it was just too hot.

We we loved Selva so much we went back a second night! Cocktails are fantastic especially their CLARIFIED watermelon cocktail. Views outside their small balconies are priceless with a view of the Baroque church, Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. The ambiance is great and the young waiters work hard to speak ENGLISH to us non Spanish speakers. They were always friendly and smiling and accommodating and they made us feel welcome there. Don't miss this place

Gorgeous bar with a great cocktail menu. I got the picnic and it came with the most delicious pickles!! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Oaxaca - the staff were also wonderful :)
Sophie B — Google review
Great atmosphere here and good service. Quirky little spot with cool furniture, cool music, just a cool kid vibe. First sip of their drinks are awesome, explosive flavor with interesting combinations. However, by the end of the drink there's definitely a feeling of too much acid. I see this in some restaurants and bars; you take one bite of something and it's perfectly seasoned, however by the end of the dish it's just too salty. The same thing here with the drinks, it happened with the other drinks we ordered as well. I think if they just toned down the acid in their overall balance the drinks would be perfect. As it is, it was hard to get through two cocktails each.

Marito & Moglie Café stands out as a visually appealing specialty coffee shop in Oaxaca City. Founded by Aurora Tostado and Stafano De Bellis in 2019, this café on Avenida Miguel Hidalgo offers a selection of Oaxacan-produced coffee from regions reaching as high as 1850 meters above sea level.
One of the best brunch spots in town. It’s down to earth and doesn’t try to be high brow. The space is beautiful with a courtyard that provides an escape from the bustle while being just around the corner. Service is excellent. Friendly faces and short wait times. Coffee is delicious and none of the orders have missed. We’ve made this our daily breakfast spot in the city. The banquettes are made with fresh bread and unbelievably tasty ingredients. Granola is flavorful and the shakshuka is great as well!

We adore this little cafe. Seems like a coffee and pastry stop if you just walk by but it opens up to a small dining room and even larger courtyard dining. We go every time we’re at n Centro Oaxaca. Which is now three times. Fresh squeezed juice. Cappuccino. Breakfast menu items for lots of palates. We tried our first Shakshouka. - Amazing. Shakshouka is a Maghrebi dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, olive oil, peppers, onion, and garlic, commonly spiced with cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper.

First things first, the handbrew/filtrado coffee is absolutely delicious. I’d recommend the sierra norte for its rich, chocolatey notes, and I’d like to thank the friendly and knowledgeable server for making the recommendation. I stopped by twice for two equally delicious breakfasts: one with shakshuka, and the other with avocado toast. The beautiful whitewashed courtyard is surrounded by trees and bougainvillea, and made me feel like I was really on vacation. The only thing you might want to note is that the WiFi signal isn’t as strong outside, however there is a dining room indoors as well.

I absolutely loved the courtyard area – it's such a relaxing spot, with vibrant colors and beautiful plants that create a peaceful atmosphere. The service was attentive and friendly, making the experience even better. Highly recommend!

Coolest place, coolest vibes, coolest food, coolest cafe. I loved how there were pillows/cushions on the benches we were sitting at, and the whole local-vibe of the cafe was really awesome. The artwork and furniture and just ugh everything. There was outdoor and indoor seating, half of us were outside and the other half inside. The waitress that was serving us was really sweet and adorable whenever she was trying to figure out who ordered what. I ordered the iced strawberry matcha latte and the toast de huevos revueltos, which were both AMAZING!! I wasn't expecting to like them as much as I did! My friend got the avocado toast hot chocolate oaxaqueño, which were also pretty dang good. Overall, can't express how much you should try this place out!

Restaurant
Tlayudas La Chinita is a popular mexican restaurant in the city of Oaxaca. It is typically crowded with locals and tourists alike, and has a great system for ordering food. The food is particularly good, with some of the best tlayudas around. However, be warned - they are massive, so make sure to bring an appetite or friends!
The first thing I impressed was the service. Even though you don’t speak Spanish but there will be a man, he will take care of your order until you get the food. I have tried all the meats. They were absolutely incredible. I recommend to share with someone because it’s huge even for a small size
Nitchanun O — Google review
Service was friendly and quick despite our limited Spanish. We arrived within the first hour of opening so we didn’t have too long a wait. Portions are huge! Two large tlayudas would have easily fed four adults - the tasajo and chorizo were both delicious. Felt like a real experience to enjoy this meal surrounded by locals and the sounds and smells of the grill. Would thoroughly recommend to any visitors to Oaxaca!
Emily F — Google review
Very nice tlayudas. Definitely it gets a bit crowded. Pick a tlayuda and then the meat you want. Maybe I recommend putting it multiple meats as the tlayuda is pretty big
Andrea D — Google review
Awesome local tlayudas experience. The portions are huge. We probably could have split the small size. The chorizo, which is served on the side, is some of the best I’ve had!
Taverna T — Google review
Large portions, friendly service. If you haven’t tried a Tlayuda before, this is the place to start. Really hit the spot for lte night munchies. It says a lot when everyone around us was smiling and happily enjoying their meals
Kyo S — Google review
Not sure what happened to the old listing. They had a ton of reviews and I had contributed prior. These tlayudas are simply awesome. Locals and tourists alike line up and wait for these delicious treats. You take a number from the young man at the end and wait for your turn. On a weekday at 9 pm I waited for 40 or so minutes. They are quick and diligent but the demand is very high. The first time I went I over ordered not knowing how big a regular tlayuda was and how filling it would be. They look thin but that thinness goes a long way. Happy to report that leftovers reheat very, very well either in a toaster oven or a skillet with a little oil. Get some flame grilled proteins. The perfect accompaniment along with the delicious salsas and radish. I will never not go here when visiting Oaxaca. People that say they are similar to others in town .. well I don’t know what to tell them.
Omorado — Google review
Great street food! As the famous Netflix show shows, the whole family is dedicated to delivering good food. They roast everything directly there. The tripe was a bit too salty, but all others were delicious. Tlayuda chica (small) was even too big for me, so I had the leftover for my next day lunch. I added 2 kinds of meats though. I’d recommend going early. I went there by 7:40pm-ish, 20 mins before opening, and got # 8 and got my food like 8:30pm. Before me there were many families. The lines grew quite quickly.

Came here due to Netflix documentary about Oaxaca food. Arrived before they opened and quickly the long line showed up. But they gave every customer a number for line. The tlayudas is delicious and special made compared with other food stands.

Our last night on vacation in Oaxaca and we wanted to have tlayudas one more time before we left. We stumbled upon this location and decided to give them a try. They weren't quite ready to open when we stopped by, so they told us to come back in 20 minutes. We sauntered around the block and came back at 8:30. There were already several people waiting. We grabbed a couple of plastic stools and a guy came by and took our order. We ordered the tasajo. We watched the whole process, from the handmade tortillas, to the grilling of the meat over an open flame, to the assembly and throwing the tlayuda back onto the fire to crisp it up. A few minutes later, he brought our tlayuda and offered us some salsa. The tlayuda was fantastic, but that salsa put it over the top! If you're out late looking for something quick, don't hesitate to give this place a shot!
Amy V — Google review
I came across this place when I was hungry late night and most of the dine-in restaurants had closed. The crowd and the smell of the meat over the coals convinced me. The tlayuda was packed with flavour - especially the grilled beef and chorizo. The salsa was on the spicier end and perfectly complemented the tlayuda. The portions were generous. Strongly recommend.
Benjamin J — Google review
This place offers the best tlayudas. We usually take out the tlayudas because there is little space to eat. I have been coming here for the last 15 years. The best time to go is at 7 pm when they start putting up the stall. Everything is still fresh and clean. The price has gone up during the last few years. Last time we ordered a couple weeks ago, tlayuda mixta which has all types of meat (tasajo, cecina and chorizo) cost 110 pesos. But it is an extra HUGE tlayuda for 2 people. The sauce is the best. They usually start making the sauce at 7pm. Their chocolate atole drink is also the best but sometimes at 7-7.30 pm it is still not ready.

Hit it 👍🏿! Something you must try when you come to Oaxaca. Once people start eating it starts to get quite busy. They can only do a couple at a time so I'd get there early to make sure you don't have to wait too long. Find the man that takes your orders and then you can take a seat or stand around.

Memelas San Agustín are a traditional Oaxacan delicacy, resembling sopes found in other parts of Mexico. These thick, toasted masa cakes are typically enjoyed earlier in the day and can be topped with various ingredients such as refried black beans, queso fresco, shredded cabbage, salsa, mole negro, tinga (shredded and stewed chicken), or potatoes. They are grilled on a comal to achieve a crispy exterior while maintaining a soft interior.
A MUST-VISIT in Oaxaca! We spent a month in the city and this might be my favorite place to eat. Memelas San Agustin is a small roadside stall serving a variety of fresh memelas. The service is always super fast, the staff is super friendly, the food is reasonably priced and everything is delicious! Make sure to try the Chicken Tinga. Veggie options also available!

I had came across this street food vendor, by watching a Chopstix YouTube video; Luke Martin & Sabrina at the time. All I can gladly say, it was a dining experience and worth every Mexican peso I had paid. I had 6 of them. So, you help yourself to a card with a number. To which they will call out that number in Spanish. Then ask to what you want. This my demolition of food 2x Rajas (Poblano Chile Cut Into Strips , Peppers, Cheese) 3x Pollo Tinga & Oaxaca Queso (Chicken) 1x Champíons & Quesco (Mushroom) They also serve drinks but as to what these were, I’d never inquired. Anti-bacterial pumps are available, as also napkins. You get some homeless people coming and asking for food. So, it’s at your discretion if you wish to buy them food. A good highlight of my stay in Oaxaca and will advise to check them out early before leaving Oaxaca.

Found this by accident whilst exploring Oaxaca city :). The ladies working are so friendly and work hard to give us the yummiest food! My favourite was the Quesadilla De Flor De Calabaza, simple yet delicious! In Sundays they have a more extensive menu. There isn’t a lot of seating so we went around the corner & sat on a bench, easy! It’s nice to get an easy street meal that’s also delicious and affordable😍. The Memelas were great too. La Selva De Los Gatos is an outdoor vegan eatery in Oaxaca that also serves as a cat rescue. The cafe offers vegan food and drinks, and visitors can interact with adoptable cats while they wait for their orders. The decor of the cafe is unique, and there is now an entrance fee to get in. In addition to the cats, there is a boutique shop outside the gate and some paintings on display.
Even if there weren’t cats of all shapes and sizes roaming around this beautiful little oasis I would still have stopped in for some fantastic coffee and marvelous food. Add all the sweet cats lounging about and this is heaven. The staff are incredibly friendly. The cats are living their best lives and your support helps with the costs of keeping the gatos happy.

Wonderful place to enjoy cats and eat vegan! With admission of 50 pesos, which you can redeem if you order food, you get to play with all kinds of cats, who are looking for homes. If you’re local and looking, definitely come here to adopt. All cats appear to be healthy, friendly, and living the good life here. We ordered the vegan burgers that came with chips. Delicious and healthy! The green smoothie is also filled with vegetables so a good option if you’re looking for lots of fiber. Never felt like service was slow, plus you have the cats to keep you company. Highly recommend!

This place is amazing, these people are heroes. All the cats are very chill, happy to be showered with affection and very well fed and looked after. My favorite was a three legged Siamese, she was just beautiful, I would have taken her home there and then if it had been at all possible. If you can please just drop an extra donation in the box when you leave, every peso makes a difference.

I truly don't understand the critical reviews. A great little spot with staff that obviously cares about the cats they provide a paradise for. I felt welcome and accommodated. My opinion is that the food and drinks are fresh and flavorful and the portions are generous. The staff is transparent about this being an all-vegan cafe. Regarding the prices and entrance fee, I see it for what it is: a small premium to support this business's cause.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS!!! If you’re visiting Oaxaca just like I am you need to visit this place if you love cats and gardens. I had a 10/10 experience here the pastries were so delicious. I was in Oaxaca for a few days and so many bakeries were just not cutting it for me. So many bland and hard breads, I was so disappointed. I saw this place when I was arriving to Oaxaca and I am so thankful I did. We came here with the idea that we were here to see cats only, I obviously had to get a Coffee . Then I got the croissant And the chocolate concha. Let me tell you, IT WAS DELICIOUS. To my surprise it was VEGAN?!?! I’m not vegan but I was so shocked on how soft and delicious it was. The dalgona coffee is your usuall coffee so there is no negative comment on it. The cats were so calm the whole time but it was nice knowing that where I was sitting there was kittens on the chairs around me. I felt like I was in a studio ghibli movie. My favorite place to visit in Oaxaca. A cat café with adoptable rescued cats. Thoughtful atmosphere with owners who care about animals and our planet. They have delicious vegan food and refreshing drinks. Compostable toilets and grey water sinks. Entry through an art and clothing shop with items made and curated by a family with proceeds going to their cats. Cats are clearly well cared for with an enriching (fully enclosed) environment, water fountains, toys, scratching posts, and shaded foliage areas for napping. They also welcomed disabled cats. Would highly recommend visiting and a worthy cause for donations. And, have I mentioned, ADORABLE cats. There is a rotating group of cats as they are adopted and more brought in to the rescue.

What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon! Not only does this place host a home for stray cats and offer them to be adopted but they also cook amazing plant based foods!!!! These cats are so loveable, cute and friendly... Please adopt if you can! I wish I could. I'll come back here when I'm staying in Oaxaca to give them some love and enjoy another delicious meal. The staff are so very nice.

El Lechoncito de Oro is a popular street stand known for its mouthwatering seared pork tacos that have left many patrons in awe. The limited menu doesn't deter locals from lining up at this favorite late-night spot, where the savory tacos and tortas with spicy sauce are highly praised despite the small portion size. The friendly staff and lively atmosphere add to the experience, making it a must-visit for those craving delicious late-night snacks in the neighborhood.
100% the best pork tacos in my humble opinion. My wife and I went there 3 nights in a row. I love spicy stuff so I asked for special salsa... so damn good.

I came by here one night because I had been told that the food here is really good. They have a very limited menu and the only meat option is pork. I basically tried one of everything. Two tosatadas, two tacos and one torta. I will say they were all very good but the one thing that stood out to me was the tostadas. Those were the best to me. I liked the tacos and the torta but they did feel a little dry, especially the torta, even though it had sauce inside. Also, there is a rather long line that forms but it moves by real quick. I was surprised! People order fast and they don't order much either. You can take it to go or eat it there. They have a section behind the food truck where you can put your food down and eat it standing. It's very convenient. The workers are also really nice and efficient at what they do. They have some music playing while you're eating and it isn't too loud which I also enjoyed.

Comedor Istmeño Casa Juchitán is a unique restaurant located in Oaxaca, known for its homemade cuisine from the coastal Istmo region. The vibrant traditional clothes at the entrance and the open kitchen run by two women add to its charm. There's no menu, but you can ask for recommended dishes. The ceviche is highly praised, and despite the lack of a menu, there are more options available upon inquiry.
This place is really amazing. I can’t say enough good things about it. The food is delicious and made from scratch (so I might take a minute to prepare, but very much worth it!!! The atmosphere is cute, and I love the people working here. If I ever come back to Oaxaca, I will definitely come again.

Delicious simple food made by a lovely lady. There is no menu and we don’t speak Spanish so we got the dishes that were recommended on the reviews but I think there are more options available if you ask. On the other night we order shrimps and since there is no menu we didn’t know the price, so at the end we got pretty surprised for 300 peso per portion. Worth to mention that for same price you can get a main dish with shrimps at a much nicer restaurant. This definitely left a bitter aftertaste for us from the visiting
Alisa K — Google review
Read the reviews and just needed to try it. It was awesome. Istmeño is an indigenous group from southern Oaxaca state, and garnachas originated there.

Was craving Garnachas and asked a local bartender where I could find some late at night. They recommended I check this spot out. I was the only patron around 9pm on a Monday (which made me nervous, and made me think it was a “commission” deal) but nonetheless, I went for it hoping I wouldn’t regret it tomorrow. It was absolutely delicious and I was totally fine the next day. there’s no menu, and i’m not sure if they speak english (I’m a native spanish speaker) but they told me what they had on hand to make and i ordered just the one thing: Garnachas. they were being prepared with beef that night. They were absolutely delicious. I was so happy to be eating them. They also gave me a ceviche tostada as a free amuse bouche which was lovely. Recommend checking them out for Garnachas!

La Olla is a vibrant cantina in Oaxaca, Mexico, known for its enchanting rooftop terrace and art-filled ambiance. The restaurant offers an array of authentic Oaxacan dishes, including six unique mole varieties such as the rare mole de chicatanas made from flying ants. One of their standout dishes is the manchamantel, featuring pork ribs in a complex fruity chile sauce with grilled apples and pineapple.
This was the best mole (by far) that I found in Oaxaca city. In my opinion the food and service was better than other Michelin restaurants I tried in the city. The space is quaint and comfortable. The waiter we had in the afternoon was knowledgeable and attentive making the experience even better. I ended up at La Olla twice on my trip because of how amazing the food and service was.

La Olla in Oaxaca Centro is a fantastic spot with delicious, well-balanced flavors that truly showcase Oaxacan cuisine. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the service is attentive and welcoming, making for a memorable dining experience. I visited with vegetarian friends, and while they enjoyed their meals, I felt the menu could offer a greater variety of vegetarian and pescatarian options. More plant-based dishes and a wider selection of fish would make the experience even better, catering to a broader range of dietary preferences. That said, the quality of ingredients, presentation, and overall experience were excellent, and I would definitely return.

With delicate flavors, the dishes are delicious, especially the main dish Mole Amarillo Con Camarones. The shrimps are with the good smell of grills. Their spicy sauce is also hot enough!

I came here for drinks last night! It was a cute little restaurant with young employees who spoke pretty good English. They were super helpful and professional. I had their Mezcalina cocktails, a passion fruit and a mango. The passion fruit was delicious! The drink was sweet and tangy with the aroma of passion fruit. The mango was just mediocre. It was good but not great!

Not too many gluten free options, but the tlayuda we shared was very good. I wish there were more gluten free options on the menu. For the terraza bar itself, service wasn't great. There was one man working very hard to supply everyone drinks, but other waitstaff just appeared to be sitting there not helping? Getting our drinks and the bill took very long.
Kay W — Google review
Exemplary food and services! We had the taquitos, seasonal salad with grilled chicken, the sopa de guias and the mole amarillo con camerones. Incredible value as well.
Julie L — Google review
Sat in the second floor, service started okay. Ordered tostada de Camaron y pulpo al ajillo for an appetizer…very small and almost zero camaron or pulpo. Ordered Arrachera estilo La Olla… worst flank steak ever, under cooked, fatty and stringy for roughly $30.00 cad. Never saw the waiter again after main course served, no one checked on food or drinks. Restaurant upstairs was almost empty, so busy was not an excuse. Michelin 2024 must be something you buy as I have been to Michelin restaurants in Argentina that absolutely crushed this restaurant
S. F — Google review
I’m honestly baffled by some of the negative reviews—this place is fantastic. Every time I’ve visited, the food, service, and atmosphere have been consistently excellent. It’s clear that a lot of care goes into every detail. On my most recent visit, the server was incredibly warm and attentive, the food arrived impressively fast, and the prices were more than reasonable—especially for a Michelin-recognized restaurant. Let’s be real: Michelin doesn’t hand out honors to places that don’t deliver a good experience. Some of the older negative reviews are honestly laughable—many seem like they were written by people determined to find fault, not give fair feedback. Plus, a few are nearly a decade old. A lot can change in that time, and this restaurant clearly has evolved for the better. Bottom line: it’s absolutely worth a visit. Don’t let the haters steer you wrong!

Las Quince Letras Restaurante is a renowned dining spot in Oaxaca, Mexico, known for its traditional Oaxacan cuisine and mezcal cocktails. It is part of an exclusive selection of restaurants representing the best of Oaxacan gastronomy. The restaurant offers hearty breakfast and brunch options featuring local ingredients like chilaquiles, enfrijoladas, tamales, enmoladas, and enchiladas prepared in the Oaxacan style.
I loooooved the guava mousse desert, amaaazing. Super awesome mezcalitas. The 3 mole mix is superb. The tacos are more like tlayudas for me, and not my favourite, but I’d definitely go back for the amaaazing mole and guava mousse! The mousse is caramel and has mezcal as well. It got a Michelin star so, you know, they obviously have high standards.

Las Quince Letras Our restaurant experience in Mexico City left us nervous but Oaxacas food scene has revived my faith! Our guide for the day actually recommend this location for something that represented Oaxaca food on a high end scale. The restaurant was beautiful, the staff fluent in Spanish/English and very attentive. We got the Oaxacan plate 9.1/10 the meats on this dish were well marinated and the flavour lingered in your mouth! Red mole enchilada was my favourite part as it was just packed with flavour, and the stuffed chile was out of this world. We had to get the indigenous mole trio of course! 8.2/10 Big fan of the mole rojo, was seasoned beautifully and I could eat it all day. Other moles weren’t my cup of tea but you’re never gonna like everything and that’s okay. Definitely worth the price.
Spencer F — Google review
First off service was excellent, our waiter was friendly and attentive. The ambiance was also nice for a rooftop dinner at night, so kudos to them for nailing that part. But it pains me to say the food was a letdown and my family found their food underwhelming as well. I personally got a fish dish (I know Oaxaca isn't exactly known for their seafood but after eating so much meat throughout my stay, I wanted something on the lighter side) and while the sauce was okay, it couldn't mask how overcooked the fish was. My family all got different types of mole dishes and said it was their least favorite mole they've tried on this whole trip and some of their proteins were tough and chewy. None of the moles really stood out and were on the bland side. Also the desserts we ordered felt very basic and unremarkable. I did like the Chile de agua a la vinegreta, a cold, refreshing small dish with a good balance of acidity, spice, and savoryness. The Octopus I tried was decent as well. Hopefully it was just an off night for the kitchen staff, but I wouldn't recommend this place based on the food.

Wow! On my first night visiting Oaxaca, I was meandering and just was looking at my maps to see some restaurants— to be quite honest I missed the one I was looking for but happy to report I stumbled upon this restaurant instead. Please forgive me, I cannot remember his full name, but my waiter, whose name started with an E, was absolutely amazing. He encouraged me and helped me with my Spanish, but quickly stepped in with English if I was struggling. He was kind and attentive, and made many wonderful suggestions! Also— i was very chilly and he offered me a shawl. My meal was absolutely fantastic. I cannot remember the name of the soup— but it was brothy, full Of cilantro, corn, onion and tortilla. Absolutely amazing, I could eat this every day forever. The guacamole that was served with my entree was some of the best I’ve ever tasted! My cocktail was delicious, and entertaining— cinnamon was burnt tableside for some aromatics. I really enjoyed this meal, and the service was outstanding. Gracias!

I went at a slightly off hour so the restaurant was only 40% full. Originally they let me choose my table in the pretty courtyard area but shortly after I sat they asked me to move tables because they wanted to sweep that area. Uggggh, ok... I moved but then realized they'd shoved me in a dark corner by a very busy service door. After they were done sweeping I insisted on moving back to my original table. Awkward and annoying but let's move on to the food. I ordered the trio of moles and each came with a different protein. The pork (mole coloradito) and chicken (mole negro) were horribly dry and tough. Just because your covering something in sauce doesn't mean it's ok to cook proteins that badly. Even the flavor of those 2 moles was pretty lackluster compared to the others I've tried during my month-long stay in Oaxaca. When I mentioned the dry meat to the waiter he tried to mansplain to me that that's just how it is when cooking pure proteins. Nope. The 3rd mole, almenda with beef was pretty good though and the meat was tender. Especially at this price, I would not recommend this restaurant.
Amanda N — Google review
The trio mole was spectacular! Do reserve a table beforehand or else be prepared to wait a few hours to get a table. Service is slow - roughly 40 minutes after being seated until the dishes arrive. Yet, worth the wait!
Kanyanat P — Google review
Very nice atmosphere and well kept and clean place . The staff were friendly and polite. I loved the grasshopper wrapped in cheese as an appetizer. The main plates however were all disappointing. The dark mole was extremely thick and rich. Too much to enjoy that. The other two mole plates were ok. My grilled fish had very nice tomato sauce, the banana as part of the plate surprised me positively. However the actual fish didn't taste much and it was a bit too grilled for me. The beef and pork mixed plate had extremely juicy and tender carne de res, but the rest was average. The tongue plate in caper sauce was good. It was a nice dinner, however to have been awarded by Michelin team (NOT STARRED) I was expecting more. Prices were 500 each.

Nestled in the heart of Oaxaca, El Escapulario is a charming little Mexican café that offers an array of traditional and vegetarian dishes, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts. The restaurant is a modest setting like being in someone’s home for dinner, very cozy and we were lucky enough to sit by the window getting a great view. The staff were very friendly and very patient with us while we spoke broken Spanish. (Thank you!!) Finally, the food!! It was so good! One of the most authentic restaurants in Oaxaca! It’s so good that even locals were expecting us to have eaten there when we spoke with them! The menu even included traditional items like Chicatanus, which is seasonal (June-July) but a little tricker to find (at least it was for us) for those more adventurous!

Went here to try manchamental and chichilo (both very hard to find), and it was incredible! The chichilo was duely somber, hearty, and mostly simple in flavor, with only very subtle complexity, and the vegitables and dough pieces complimented the tone of the dish brilliantly - enjoyable but not so pleasurable as to be inappropriate for a mourning family. The manchamantel was very lively, fruity, rich, bright, fun, and fairly spicy for a mole. And again, the other items in the dish complimented the mole brilliantly. The manchamantel is now my favorite of the 8 moles of Oaxaca, and the Chichilo is my significant other's favorite. The food was absolutely amazing, but do bear in mind, you will likely be waiting a while for your food. In my opinion though, it is well worth the wait! The decor is also fairly plain.

Absolutely loved our meal here! One of the best in Oaxaca and that's even comparing it to much fancier places with more accolades. Food tasted home made and the ambiance is casual, so the food took a while to come out, but worth it if you have time! Loved the Sopa de Conde and Mole Negro!

Extremely good moles! Ordered the 5 sampler. Look at other reviews for types. Best traditional mole I’ve had yet! Big recommendation to come here. The combo also comes with drinks which is nice. It’s quite pricy though - see my menu photo. The 5 mole combo with rice and 2 beverages is 650MX. Worth it though!

A quiet and sweet restaurant with some of the best moles I’ve ever had. The mole testing menu is a must try! My favorites were Coloradito, negro and rojo. The crema de chipolines is amazing. I loved the champurrado, the drink that I got which is a mix of corn and chocolate.

A must-visit food market in Oaxaca — loud, chaotic, and full of amazing grilled meats. The famous “smoke hall” is packed with vendors grilling tasajo, cecina, and chorizo right in front of you. Everything smells incredible and tastes even better. Ordering a small plate of grilled cactus on the side is a fun local touch. Be prepared: it’s very crowded and seating is limited. Some vendors may guide you to a table but then require you to order drinks from them — a bit of a tourist trap. We were pushed into buying beverages we didn’t want. Something to watch out for.

This mexican restaurant Casa Oaxaca Reforma is a great place to go for delicious food and excellent customer service. It's also a great place to celebrate from a birthday to a romantic dinner.
I booked the table for two at Sun 17:30 but it closed at 6 pm, I was surprised that we can still get in. The starter is amazing, hand-made and fresh salsa that you can adjust the level of spice! The waiter is super nice and he even tried to learn mandarin to wish us have a good meal! We have ordered local dishes made with mole. The beef ribs and turkey with different kind of mole that you can taste different style of Mexican cuisines. We enjoyed a lot, highly recommend it.

We ordered chille en nogada and chicken black mole and an artesan beer. Chile en nogada was good and filling, but it lacked a bit of flavor. Chicken black mole was ok, but I had better from other restaurants. It came with 2 small fried platain. The home made salsa was nice, but it lacked flavor as well. The servers meant well, but took away our plates before we could finished it. Overall, it was dissapointing for an upscale Michellin restaurant. The heart of Michellin restaurant is the gastronomic creativity and the sensationalim of the flavor. We expected more, but walked away dissapointed. We won't be going back.

OUTSTANDING!! My wife and I were only doing Michelin Star mentioned restaurants while in Oaxaca for the first time ( except for a great food tour we did at a HUGE local market). Casa Oaxaca did an amazing job from start to finish. The service was impeccable. Our waiter, who made salsa at the table, noted that we had different likes in our heat level on our salsa. After making the first salsa, he went away, on his own, and made a separate one that had more heat. So appreciated!! We did four appetizers because we wanted to try so much. Each did not disappoint. You just can’t get food like this at such a reasonable prices. Oh, the live music downstairs was top quality. So good!

If you’re looking for a great spot to enjoy Oaxacan food without the hustle and bustle of the city center, Casa Oaxaca Reforma is a solid choice. It’s a bit further out, which means it’s quieter, and you can usually find a table without much waiting. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious — generous portions and traditional Oaxacan dishes, including a really good mole. Prices are definitely on the higher side, but that’s pretty much expected for a restaurant of this brand. Still, if you explore a bit, you can find other spots in Oaxaca with similar quality for less. That said, if you’re after a mid-to-high-end meal and prefer to avoid the crowds downtown, this is a great place to stop.

Can’t fault a single part of my evening at Casa Oaxaca Reforma. From the incredibly attentive, personable and welcoming staff (thank you, Willie) to the incredible food and superb wine. A great experience, and having read some of the other seemingly negative reviews I cannot seem to place how or why they have come about. Would highly recommend.

I found the overall experience at this restaurant to be mixed. While the food was decent with quality ingredients, the prices were notably high, affecting the value for money. The ambiance was beautiful, and the service was excellent, yet there was a sense that it caters more to those seeking a status-driven dining experience rather than exceptional cuisine.

First of all I thought I was going to Casa Oaxaca but I ended up at Casa Oaxaca Reforma. I never got to go to casa Oaxaca but I'm sure the difference is huge. Castle Oaxaca Reforma was quite a disappointment. I ordered two soups for my daughters and both of them were not even room temperature. I was really surprised because at the price point everything should be spot on and the soup should not be cold. I did not return it because my daughters were hungry but even they 7 and 9 mentioned that it was not hot. We ordered a couple of entrees to share. One of them was beef ribs and the other one was some pork dish. Neither of them were hot. The beef ribs consisted of one rib which seemed like it was cooked a long time ago a thrown together salad and some room temperature roasted potatoes. The pork dish was worse. It consisted of some knuckle or bone with very little meat on it. The same thrown together salad as the beef rib and no potato. This was truly a disappointing and expensive experience. The best part of the evening were the cocktails. I got to admit the cocktails were delicious. I had one with mezcal and passion fruit that blew me away. Also the table side salsa preparation was nice but the south side itself was nothing to write home about. I definitely won't be going here again. They really need to step up their game as far as food preparation and the temperature in which it is served

What a gem this place is! I had breakfast here three days in a row, throughout my stay in Oaxaca. The food is fantastic and beautifully presented, the staff are lovely, and the atmosphere on the patio is great. Will miss this!

July262025 2nd visit she ordered eggs Benedict/bacon that comes with potatoes and saavocado. Benny was really good my criticism is it was delivered only warm so I think it sat for a bit beofre service, the potatoes we COLD and tasted of 3 days old refrigerator storage whichcwas a huge disappointment as I was starving for some nice crisp breakfast potatoes. He ordered torta ahogada sandwich wasn't just warm not hot, flavors were good. We will try again to see what happens. Note to server: please deliver the food HOT! Note to kitchen staff: please crisp the potatoes on griddle or in a skillet. Stale potatoes 😔 Lovely place! We walked from La Cascada walked East on Genaro Vasquez street. There is zero signage from this direction and after speaking someone from the restaurant we were told they are not allowed signage per the city. Bummer because this place ROCKS! . We visited on father's day they were not that busy about 10 tables sat. Our order was taken quickly and drinks arrived right away. He ordered cappuccino and I had orange juice. He ordered huevos rancheros and I ordered French toast. We really enjoyed our food. Our server was amazing and I forgot to note his name. Only complaint we ordered eggs over medium and they came sunny side up but the whites were fully cooked. The place is very clean including the restrooms.

We visited Chepiche Cafe during our stay in Oaxaca. We heard great things about this spot. Although the food was good, the service was a bit slow. Went during brunch time where they offer mainly sandwiches and salads. Although breakfast is served till 2:00 p.m. we were hoping to try some of the bigger dishes that are not available until dinner. They focus on using fresh and local ingredients from local vendors. Even though it's beautiful to sit outside, there are lots of trees with nuts that attracts squirrels out and they constantly drop Nutshells and leaves down to your food.

Unexpected delightful dining experience. Beautiful courtyard to enjoy a peaceful meal with family, friends, or just yourself. The service was friendly and fast. The food was delicious. Don't overlook this gem. Make sure to go and enjoy all there is to offer at this sweet neighborhood cafe.

Hands down the best breakfast spot in Oaxaca. It was so good we came here multiple times to try different items. They have really good coffee and freshly squeezed juices. A beautiful outdoor seating area and courtyard. Their pancakes were amazing as well as their pastries like their warm banana bread. Everything was delicious and highly recommend coming here. We loved it here! ❤️

La Mezcalerita is a vibrant cantina located in Oaxaca City, known for its casual and lively atmosphere. The rooftop terrace offers a perfect setting to enjoy craft cocktails, beer, and traditional cuisine. This popular spot attracts both locals and tourists with its comida corrida menu during the afternoon and an extensive selection of mezcals sourced from local producers. The bar also features a variety of craft beers from Mexico, including Oaxacan brews.
When greeted, the first thing they said was "well before you order... You absolutely must have some Rosca", which shows you the kind of place this is. Super friendly, really nice bar. Besides the free three kings cake, the quality of the tlayudas and the papas here was terrific, far more than we expected when just popping in for a drink. Really tasty snacks! Drinks selection is also HUGE but everything was really good. Recommend the beer flight in particular! Great roof bar!

I've been coming back to this place as long as I've been living in Oaxaca (almost two years!) and it never disappoints. I always run into someone I know here!! A great place to have a beer with friends and catch up. It is perfect for any occasion or celebration and has a great selection of drinks.

One of the best bars in Oaxaca in terms of drinks and service. Their menu is HUGE, and the drinks are delicious. Staff is also very friendly and helpful, and gives good context behind each drink. The drinks themselves especially the cocktails seemed very unique and uniquely presented.

We went early on a Sunday before the terrace opened, so we sat at a table downstairs in front of a fan. The house mezcales were all great; we tried 6 of them.

I came here for quick bite and a beer while roaming the streets sightseeing. I tried their torta which was mediocre and an IPA to wash it down. The IPA was delicious! It looks like it was from a local brewer, the beer had a hint of lavender. One of the better IPAs I’ve had in a while, my even be better than some local brews back home.

A beautiful local place in Oaxaca Centre to come for a beer or a quick bite! We took the Tlayudas with cecina (which is beef) inside it has bean sauce, cheese, lettuce, tomato and salsa verde. We also took the Memelas with cecina (the mini tacos and also the “chapulines” which are the crickets. You need to like the chilli flavour.

Google maps makes a lot of ‘craft beer’ promises in Oaxaca and doesn’t necessarily deliver on them. Luckily, La Mezcalerita is holding up their end of the bargain for the whole city. They have an extensive list of local bottled craft beers and enjoying one while watching the sunset from their rooftop balcony is one of the best experiences I’ve had since we arrived here. The food looked good too, although we were already on a ‘taco promise’ elsewhere. I had a First Ascent Double IPA by Ammon and it was VERY good.

The place is nice enough, but it takes incredibly long to get your order. The place was not half full, we ordered two lattes and a pastry and it took 45minutes to arrive. There were 4-5 people working. Maybe the coffee was some special bean but it was not good. I would recommend this place only if you like to wait.

Came for brunch with my wife and friends, the location is great with a big 'courtyard' inside, with a canopy that allows the wind to blow through but keeps the sun out. I had a bagel on both occasions which was delicious. The was well cooked, the manchego was gooey and melted, and the bacon was salty and crispy. Plus variety of drink options. The price is so great US$4 for this all you can eat breakfast buffet . Highly recommend restaurant in central Oaxaca

Nothing fancy, just a set meal for $100 pesos. Includes 3 choices of starters (soup, salad or other), choice of about 4 mains (one vegetarian), unlimited fruit water, bread and a bite or two of dessert. The variety is great. Mains usually include something with beef, pork and chicken (plus the veg). I highly recommend the ensalada mixta-- a fresh healthy delight. There's also a breakfast buffet, but I've never tried it. The afternoon menu is posted on a board by the door if you want to review the offerings.

The establishment is part of an exclusive selection in the Michelin Guide 2024, showcasing the best of Oaxacan cuisine from traditional roots to innovative interpretations. The restaurant's name stems from 'teosinte,' the wild ancestor of modern corn, reflecting its celebration of Mexican heritage.
Hidden gem that rivals Casa Oaxaca or Criollo for artístic presentation, elevated mixture of flavors. It’s a tasting menu with 6 courses that may be pared with creative unique drinks that complement the flavors of each dish. Service has improved from last review. Prices are not listed and while high for Oaxaca, are in line for what you get. Cash only, so plan accordingly (1500 pesos pp

We had our Christmas dinner here, and it was a real treat! The food and ingredients were amazing, and some of the dishes we had tried in Oaxaca were even better. The place has a really cool bohemian vibe that makes you feel right at home. But unfortunately, the service was terrible. It took us an hour get out of the “welcome drink” and our waitress, who was also explaining the dishes, didn’t seem to care as much as the chef did. I hope the service improves soon because it really ruined the experience.
Edwin C — Google review
Incredibly well thought out dunning experience from the well decorated seating area with a mix of jugs extracting flavors to a view of the main fire fed stove for making tortillas and smoke flavored foods. Set menu that comes out plate by plate with deep explanation. Servings are unique; lava rock with sap burning on it, a bowl of charcoalized wood with a hot ember and rosemary making the taco on top and filled with aroma. My only complaint is I left hungry which feels weird for the price
Damon T — Google review
I give it one star due to the overall experience. The food was good although not as expected. What I truly liked was the esthetic of every plate and the ingredients used. However, the service was extremely poor for a michelin restaurant. My partner is gluten intolerant and the waitress had no clue about what it is nor the minimum interest in going and asking in the kitchen. There were 7 steps from which you do not receive any proper piece of protein so the feeling is frustrating when leaving the resto. The toilet was blocked and was not working for about 30 min. There is no menu at all to see the cost of drinks. You have to pay cash. The cost is 1250 MXP per person with no drinks. I paid 2700 MXP in total including 2 bottles of water of 296ml each). The overall experience is thought-provoking as you wonder if the place is paying taxes and their employees properly.. all in all, I personally do not recommend it. There are many great options out there in Oaxaca for a better price and service. Do not waste your money here and be distracted as happened to me by the nice way the food looks in the pictures.
William — Google review
The food is excellent with very interesting flavors from all over Oaxaca. Specifically the Indigenous food and herbs. If you are willing to try new flavors outside if the norm, this will be the place. From the handmade drink concoctions of fermented fruits to the gin and vermouth you see fermenting in front of you, to the smells and flavors of the eclectic food brought before you. This is truly an amazing experience. The chef personally introduces the dishes to you and from his banter you can tell he truly love what he does. Thank you for an amazing evening. Highly recommended.
SIMONE — Google review
The food is great, however the staff was confused. We had a reservation for 8pm, we arrived at 8:05, informing us that we would need to wait for 15min, BUT they gave the table only after 9pm (shame), no wine was available at this point in time, and the cocktails were taking 15min+ to arrive. And in the end, no Credicard is accepted, without informing in advance. Even though, they recognized their mistakes and gave us the cocktails for free. Great food poor service.
Oliver F — Google review
I had a reservation at Tika’ Aya in Oaxaca for several months, after reading its Michelin recommendation. The staff was kind and welcoming at first, but shortly after, we were told they couldn’t serve us because the chef hadn’t shown up — he had gone partying the night before. A huge disappointment, especially for a restaurant with such recognition.

A lovely and professional coffee shop!!! As a tourist and coffee lover hanging around Mexico, I tried some cafe in CDMX, Purto Escondido and Oaxaca, this one is the best for now☺️Ninana is so cute!! She brewed geisha and honey bourbon for us, the former one is perfect with incredibly good price… I wanna buy one bag to brew at home myself but sadly knew they only have a few left🥹Mar provided good service too! Although this restaurant was recommended by a local chef, it regrettably did not quite meet our expectations. Taco restaurant
Lechoncito de Oro is a popular late-night street taco stand that opens at 8 p.m. and serves a steady stream of customers until late, offering decadent suckling pig tacos and Jarritos sodas. During the day, the taco cart is not available as it only operates during nighttime hours.
Was recommended by a waiter at Casa Oaxaca and also several others! It's a taco stall and only sets up at 8pm, so keep that in mind, if you plan to go here for dinner! But definitely worth the wait! Amazing pork tacos... Extremely tender and well seasoned meat! Only thing I'd like to add would be a little bit of fresh onions or something else fresh to cut the fattiness - but that's just me being absolutely nit-picky! Still 10/10 definitely recommended...no questions!
Shez E — Google review
The tacos and the meat is just average and nothing great. The line moved quickly and the service was good. However, I was not wowed. They ran out of Tortas, so we have the tacos and tostada. There was a good amount of meat on the toastada and the tacos were small, but not too expensive. There are so many great places to eat, so I and most likely would not return. Note: This is a taco stand on the street. Take out orders or eat standing.
JMQZ — Google review
What can I say? They have the best pork and chicharrón tacos in town. Don't get put off by the idea of crispy pork fat in your tacos because they provide a lovely crispy counter point to the juicy tender pork it comes with. Eating by the taco stand is the way to go for a truly authentic experience. You may have to wait a couple of minutes in line because it is so popular.
Yew-Hoe T — Google review
This is one of our favorite places to eat for street tacos when we are in Oaxaca. These tacos de lechón are on point. There’s usually a pretty big line, but it moves pretty fast. My favorite is the tacos de lechón con chicharrón. They also have delicious salsas.
Valerie R — Google review
Highly recommend this delicious taco cart for the simplicity of its offering that is completely mastered. One salsa, 2 meats. Pure deliciousness! And such incredible value for money. I ate this by the cart, standing up, and enjoyed every second of it! A must try in Oaxaca!
Alicia A — Google review
The tacos here a simple but very delicious! We went two nights in a row while we were staying in Oaxaca. Definitely recommend it! Careful with the salsa though cause it’s spicy. You can ask without it and add it by yourself later if you want to try it.
Thaís M — Google review
Not sure what all the hype is about - this place serves two kinds of tiny tacos. Also, the salsa is so hot they’re difficult to eat. And it’s also about a 10-min walk outside the city center. Would not recommend.
Matt A — Google review
Opens late (8PM), food truck, only has pierna (leg) of pork and chicharron - tacos, tortas (sandwiches), or tostadas. I got a pierna tostada, and then one taco each. LOTS of meat on the tostada, flavor of the meat was pretty good. Considerably cheaper than most tacos in Oaxaca. Only downside is they open so late! Long line but moves fast, they have a good system!

A beautiful restaurant in Oaxaca’s centre. The food was delicious and so were the cocktails (I loved the oaxaquito and the mezcamoto). I shared the fish ceviche and the trilogia of quesadillas for starters, had the fettuccine with mushrooms and shrimps for a main (great smoky flavour). Unfortunately, I did not have dessert, as I was too full by that point!

Came for brunch and loved it. Really great quality food, made with excellent, farm-grown produce. Portions are very generous, and even topping portions (e.g. strawberries for the pancakes) were more than I’ve ever seen anywhere else. We ended up having to take away a part of our order as it was a lot to have in one go. The outdoor patio is nice and calm, with a fountain adding to the serenity. Loved it!

Eggs Benedict was ridiculous. Just a chef trying to be fancy. There was like 1/8th of a tablespoon of Hollandaise sauce swiped across the top of the egg. (The Hollandaise Sauce is the whole point of the dish) Also it was on, like a cinnamon roll or something which is a clashing flavor. I didn't even eat the bread. Then I ordered papas because there was a picture of crispy seasoned papas on Google. But mine were undercooked, not crispy at all and no flavor, it was like if you had boiled potatoes and sprinkled it with paprika, zero flavor except an unseasoned raw potato flavor (I couldn't eat those either). Hire someone who knows how to cook to come up with a new menu. I told a local about it and they said yeah, people know their food is not good. Really annoying to spend $15 on garbage. I went and ate breakfast again at a different restaurant after that because I was so pissed off. Learn how to make food that tastes good if you're going to charge people money for it. I guarantee this star rating is massively overrated. Haven't had such a disappointing experience in a while.

Delicious papas w tons of garlic and grilled char flavor. The trilogia de quedadillas was great as was the ceviche. The fish tacos were OK, I’d try something else next time! Tasty local beers too.
Evan R — Google review
It’s good but I think the food lacked flavor or originality for the price. The guacamole was great, though. The service was just ok
D Z — Google review
Popular for dinner but breakfast is just as good. Prices similar to other places but bigger portions, well cooked. Yogurt with fruit was ample, with seeds and toasted nuts and some chocolate cookie type sprinkles at the bottom. We also had ranchero eggs which came with beans, cheese, avocado etc. Waiters don't do English much but there is an English menu.
Ellen M — Google review
Brunch in this place is very good and fulfilling. Service is very good, installations are clean, and the ambiance is nice. I just would improve the quality of the drinks, we ordered three mineral orangeades and none of them were gassy enough because they use liter bottles instead of a small 355ml one to keep it fresh. We really enjoyed the avocado egg toast and waffles. Thank you for everything!

Nestled just beyond the highway near Panteon General, Amor del Cafe has made a delightful transition from its previous Jalatlaco location. This charming cafe is a must-visit for breakfast enthusiasts in Oaxaca, offering an inviting outdoor patio where you can savor your meal. Known for its commitment to high-quality, locally-sourced coffee and artisanal breakfast dishes, it’s the perfect spot for those who appreciate thoughtful culinary creations.
The absolutely best coffee shop in Oaxaca. Very friendly staff. A beautiful and tranquil spot to sit outside and enjoy delicious coffee and very yummy food. I love this place!

Amazing food and the staff is super friendly and welcoming. The waffles and smoothies were great

Very friendly owner! The food is delicious, and the atmosphere very relaxed. I would definitely return!
Lizzie S — Google review
Had amazing food, very quick and good service from the nicest people. The head chef/owner came out to have a chat with us and was very welcoming and polite. We will definitively visit again!
Marith H — Google review
The food and drinks are really good, there‘s a big variety of breakfast, brunch and lunch options at reasonable prices. But most of all: the family that runs it is so heartwarming, helping and friendly that you wanna get adopted right away!
Claire P — Google review
My family and I went here twice for breakfast during our stay in Oaxaca and it was amazing! The food was delicious, presentation was gorgeous (see pictures), and the staff was helpful and patient with our slow Spanish. The coffee, tea, and chocolate drinks were great as well. Prices were extremely reasonable, especially compared to what we're used to in the United States, and there was a nice variety of foods, from more traditional Mexican to breakfast foods that you could find anywhere. This was such a cute place to have a meal or even just some drinks, and was a nice way to support the local economy. I would definitely recommend it - no complaints!
Carolyn K — Google review
One of my favorite places I tried in Oaxaca. The menu is really varied, which sometimes makes me wary but everything my wife and I tried during our three breakfast visits were perfect and made with so much care and pride. The owner is very welcoming and talented.

This cafe is amazing, I ate here every day I was in Oaxaca. The food was delicious, and plated beautifully. They have lots of options for typical Oaxacan food, I especially enjoyed the cricket salsa and the salsa macha. Great coffee and pastries too! The warmth and friendliness of the staff and owner made me feel at home. Do yourself a favor and eat here when you are in Oaxaca, especially for breakfast!

Nestled in the eastern part of Centro, Onnno Lonchería is a casual spot offering delectable sandwiches, salads, and American breakfast favorites like french toast and yogurt parfaits. Originally a grab-and-go sandwich shop, it has evolved into a place for connection and conversation. The owners draw from their culinary background in Chiapas and experience in various locations to create a menu that puts a fresh spin on traditional Mexican lunch dishes.
Super cute cafe with excellent food. I had a breakfast sandwich with eggs, cheese bacon and arugula on a fantastic bun. Plus a very tasty latte. All at a great price. Staff spoke English (which was helpful since my Spanish is only toddler-level). Will definitely return.

By far one of the best spots in Oaxaca. The bakery on Calle Morelos is great too. Would recommend the ham sandwich at the bakery. Huge fan of the maple latte too. The remodel of the restauraunt took my by surprise but it is so unique.
Maya T — Google review
I've been obsessed with this restaurant for a while, from the perfect pastries to the great food and drinks, they excel at everything that they do. My favorite salad used to be the caesar until they took it off the menu but I got to try their ensalada de la casa which became my favorite and honestly it's one of the best salads I've had! Their burger and their sandwiches are really good too, but their pastries are on another level. They make a delicious banana bread that's my mom's favorite and I lovee their lemon and blueberry cake. Came back after the remodel and still love it! The service is always lovely and so is the place.

My go to breakfast and coffee for my month in Oaxaca. The maple latte is so good if you like sweet lattes. The egg breakfast sandwich and the pork sandwich were some of my favorites. Spend some time walking around Jalatlaco too! Super cute.

Fresh quality ingredients. Amazing almond croissant. Great mushroom sandwich. Delicious espresso. Wonderful atmosphere and music. Delightful staff. Great experience.

Loved our lunch here today. Its got a real stylish Copenhagen-y vibe to it. I had the chicken salad and it was deliciousand hearty.
Harriet R — Google review
I was in Oaxaca for a total of 3 days and my partner and I came to Onnno once a day. This place was a 10/10 for everything, the vibe, the food, the drinks, the service. It also had the best chili oil that they offer when you order food! The pictures should speak for themselves. The guava pastry is a limited time item and it was the best fruit flavored pastry I’ve ever had and I live in NYC. Super spacious and vibe-y spot and very tourist friendly as their employees speak perfect English. The bbq pork sandwich is a must try, it’s so flavorful and the taste is so unique!
Jacqueline — Google review
There’s a waitlist for a table on a Sunday morning. The mini lemon + blueberry cake (only on Sundays, 80 pesos) was not mini at all, it was pretty decently sized. The crust was a little tough, the cake wasn’t very moist upon you reach the blueberry jam core. The chai latte was not bad. The chicken sandwich was huge, buttery, cheesy and sinfully delicious. Chicken thighs were perfectly grilled and marinated. Portions were on the bigger side.

Taco restaurant
Tacos de Lechón Oaxaca Panteón General is a must-visit for taco enthusiasts, especially those who love lechon. Their specialty lies in offering mouthwatering variations of tacos de lechon, including the classic version and another with chicharron (pork skin). Visitors rave about the perfectly seasoned and moist pork tacos with a delightful touch of heat. While their menu may be limited, the quality of their pork tacos makes up for it.
Best pork tacos I've had. Perfectly seasoned and a nice touch of heat. Wish they had more on the menu, but with pork this good, who cares.

Tortas La Hormiga is a must-visit gem in Oaxaca City, renowned for its delectable late-night tortas that have captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. This vibrant food stall specializes in Mexican sandwiches brimming with an array of meats, cheeses, creamy avocado, and zesty sauces—all nestled within a perfectly toasted bun that strikes the ideal balance between crispy and soft.
Visited Nov 2024. Delicious tortas, friendly people. I had a Chile Relleno de picadillo - and it was amazing 👏.
Nitin T — Google review
I love a stop in the park to have a torta. They’re delicious and affordable. I get the pierna or milanesa. Their escabeche and pickled potatoes are tasty. The people are nice and get your torta made pretty quickly. Expect a line when they are busy. On Wednesdays, when there is no street food, you can find them a block north and around the corner. Get a drink with your torta and enjoy it in Parque Conzatti.
Larimie ( — Google review
I love tortas to be dripping and down right messy. This, was just ok. Toasted bread and ok stuffing- lacking some salsa. I had the chille relleno and hormiga cubana, they were dry and flat. Flavor is good though. It’s affordable- get it as a snack from a cute food truck.
Maria R — Google review
Awesome Torta place that has been around for 30 years. The tortas are big and so good! We shared one a few times as they are quite big. The chipotle sauce is super Smokey and adds even more flavour to your sandwich. Super worth it and always delicious. Oaxaca is a good lovers dream
Adventuring S — Google review
Hmmm, everyone mentions that this food truck served the best tortas In Oaxaca but we’ve had Don Chilios in Guadalajara so this was an interesting comparison. There was no contest, we had the Cubana and the huevos jamond. They were both a bit dry and the jamond didn’t have much flavor. The chorizo in the Cubana was better but I’d Don Chilos is a 10, this is a 3, it needed a much more substantial dressing or aioli sauce. The chorizo was flavorful and the buns were warm and crispy which was a good thing.
DYJ1948 — Google review
Best torta i have ever had...and I cant believe i am saying this but the chicken is our favorite. Have to get a jamaica with it. Load up on the condiments and have a nice conversation with the cook. They are a good time. It was my sons favorite stop on our trip we went back multiple times.
Chelsea L — Google review
La Hormiga’s restaurant wagon, parked on the southeast corner of Jardín Conzatti, in Oaxaca, is my go-to destination for a tasty, quick and inexpensive lunch, in tranquil surroundings. It’s parked here most days (I think that there’s one weekday that they take off). As another reviewer mentioned, pay attention to the number your given after your order is placed, because it’s not on the receipt.
Gary K — Google review
Service as ok. Sammies were meh. Tried it twice. Wouldn’t do it a third time. Pork was gristly. Like many other eateries in town, didn’t feel like they wanted to serve tourists. I get it. I hate tourists in my city too so I can’t blame them.

When you find yourself in the vibrant heart of Mexico, a visit to Bar La Giralda is an absolute must. This authentic cantina has been welcoming patrons since the 1970s, breaking traditional norms by allowing women to enjoy its lively atmosphere. Renowned for their micheladas made with pasilla chiles, each sip brings forth a delightful array of complimentary botanas—snacks that keep coming as you indulge in your drinks.
Great dive bar. Nice service and you get free snacks/apps without asking or paying. We had 4 rounds of beers and scored at least 6 free apps: veggies, tostadas, flautas, chicharonnes and quesillo, soup, tacos, more. 50 pesos for a Victoria may seem higher than expected but you get legit free food so it more than makes up for it!
Michael M — Google review
You feel really welcome here. Drinks are a little pricey, but it makes sense since they bring you plenty of free food once you’ve had a couple. The vibe is super authentic and full of tradition. Mojito tradicional de cedrón is really good!
Aleksandra M — Google review
110 PESOS for 2 bottles of Negra Modelo!!!! Somehow I doubt all the locals paid anyywhere near that regardless of what beer they were drinking. Too bad because it really is the old style cantina I remember from 50 years ago.
Muni L — Google review
Fantastic place! Arrived upon a friend's recommendation and it's absolutely spot on! The micheladas are their most notorious drink but also their cocktails are delicious! On top of that the food is superb! Every single round of food was getting better and better, it was crazy! La Giralda is a true hidden jewel and a new all-time favorite! Everybody should know about this place!
Philip B — Google review
Great spot for some good music and micheladas! We spent the night nursing some mezcal shots and playing cards. They serve tasty little plates to keep you fed while you drink.
Spenser P — Google review
Such good snacks with your drinks! How can you get a better price. So good. Highly recommend.
Keegan — Google review
We had a great time, micheldas, mezcal de cedron and mezcal mojitos!! With each round we bought they brought out a different type of appetizer, the food and drinks were delicious!!! Will definitely be back again! For everything we got I thought the price was more than fair.
Chris C — Google review
A classic "cantina" or tavern. Buy your drinks. They serve you delicious "botanas" or snacks! Friendly, personal attention from the owners! A family business! Today (1/27/18) I began with mezcal with CEDRÓN (an herb like a cross between horehound, mint and anise). Something unique!
