Udon noodle restaurant
Udon no fu is a small and cozy restaurant in Akakura Onsen, offering a fantastic dining experience. The squid ink udon is highly recommended, along with other small plates like negi toro and apple tempura. The portions are generous, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Run by a friendly elderly couple, this place offers delicious food with great service. English menus are available, making it accessible to international visitors.
Amazing experience. Tiny room with entire family serving and cooking. Delightful, warm service and delicious, authentic and inexpensive. And the squid udon! Wow! Never had anything like it. Don’t wear white! We wish we’d found it earlier than our last night as we would have gone again.
Susan L — Google review
Our best dinner in Akakura Onsen by far. This residential place is very small with only 3 tables so book early. The squid ink udon is fantastic and so are the rest of the small plates (negi toro & apple tempura is good). Slightly off the main street and it was dark and foggy when we walked there... a little scary!
Kee H — Google review
This feast, would have to be one of the best restaurant experience our family has had while travelling in Japan. It felt like we were invited into their home for dinner. Absolutely lovely family owned restaurant. Thank you. Regards Jim san.
Jim R — Google review
Outstanding experience! I will be back. Very cozy dinner and well taken care of. Small dining room family feel. Recommend the squid ink ramen and the tempura apple for sure.
Will W — Google review
Great Udon place! Family run, local ambience, I felt very welcomed and well taken care of! I highly recommend it!!!
Brandon S — Google review
Delicious udon and other sides dishes including fried chicken, tempura apple and edamame. Highly recommend the fresh apple juice too. English menus are available. The atmosphere is cosy. Three shared tables to choose from. Run by a friendly husband and wife team. Great lunch location.
Kate F — Google review
Portions are large and this is a place that needs booking unless you go early (before 630). Elderly couple run it and it has a cosy vibe. Good place to fill up well and will be back to try the other dishes. Tried the Kamzuri (fermented chilli paste) and had the regional flat wheat noodles.
San L — Google review
Outstanding place for udon noodles! The atmosphere is super authentic and you can sit on a old fire place. It's a family owned business and its really good food.

Japanese inn
Hotel Taiko is a cozy retreat with picturesque mountain vistas and invigorating open-air hot spring baths. The hotel boasts a vibrant nightclub and a restaurant, making it an ideal choice for couples and families alike. Guests appreciate the friendly and accommodating staff, as well as the convenience of on-site ski equipment rental. The hotel's main highlight is its rejuvenating onsen, which is also accessible to the public.
We absolutely loved the charm of this place. It was built in 1973 and not much has changed since then, and I absolutely loved it. There’s a restaurant, night club, foyer bar, breakfast buffet, outdoor and indoor onsen. Staff were friendly and helpful. We will be back for sure! 👍🏻
Mitch L — Google review
Came here for the Onsen. For the steep price of ¥1100, you get to experience an open air bath with lukewarm water (the coldest Onsen I've ever been to tbh). The temperature of indoor baths were good. You do get to use a bunch of skin and hair products, maybe to make up for the lukewarm water
Arinah A — Google review
We had a big family room that had an everything you needed. The view was amazing out of the windows. The breakfast has a mix between western and Japanese cruise with is okay. It's very close to the ski resort (AKAKURA) and the Onsen in the hotel is nice as well. There are a few restaurants nearby to get dinner. When we visited we noticed tons of Australiens.
Philipp K — Google review
Great place to stay within a 10 minute walk of the Akakura Onsen resort and an easy bus transfer to other spots. The Grape and Grain has live music almost every night. There are small food vendors out front of the hotel serving food so you don’t have to leave if you are feeling lazy. The staff are extremely kind and personable. Helpful with luggage, and arranging small adventures in and around Myoko. Definitely rent your skis/board here as they are reasonably priced and have a good choice of kit. I would 100% stay here again, thank you to the hotel staff for a lovely stay. I spend roughly 1/2 of my year in hotels and rarely have such quality service.
Steven B — Google review
The saving grace for this hotel is the open air onsen with a view of the adjacent tree-dotted hills and neighboring houses. In the winter, it is heaven to sink in the comfortingly hot waters after that brief sprint from the shower area to the onsen, with powdery snow accumulated around the edges of the “pool.” Another upside is the spaciousness of our triple room, Japanese style, which I prefer to a Western set-up. However, one night, we could hear people in the neighboring room making a ruckus in the wee hours of the morning. Hence, thin walls. Other than that.. hmmm. This hotel is like a flashback from the 60s-70s. The first thing that stands out is the wall to wall carpet of the lobby, predominantly violet with huge cherry blossoms . In fairness, the lobby was lined with huge picture windows, letting in a lot of natural light. All throughout the hotel, one can see it is outdated: fluorescent lighting, water stained ceilings, rotary dial phones, old bathroom fixtures, vintage furniture… One thing that needs vast improvement is the dining options. Breakfast is the only decent meal you can have on site, with a wise selection of Western and Asian food, buffet style, included in the room price. The Japanese restaurant offers only overpriced ( with small portions) of tempura and rice bowls. Such a letdown. At the lobby, there are menu cards displayed on the tables and you order at the front desk: pizza, fries, fried chicken, gyoza, simple vegetable sushi, pork curry .. The thing is, there aren’t any viable dining options in the neighborhood and the hotel food left much to be desired, especially if you stay 3-4 days for a ski trip. By the way this is not a ski in, ski out hotel. There is a one within walking distance, but easy slopes. Another one ( Akakura Kanko) is accessible via free shuttle , about 8 minutes away ( more choices of ski runs). There were more Western guests (95 pct) than Japanese. I personally would have preferred one with a local vibe. I did a lot of research on different ski regions near Tokyo and it said Miyoko was more local than Hakuba.. not anymore.. The staff was friendly and at the reception, there was always someone who spoke English. Otherwise, at the in -house ski shop and bar, they were mostly Caucasian. This hotel needs much improvement but the priority should be the food. After a couple of days, you run out of choices with the very limited menu.
Marlene P — Google review
The onsen is very dirty U can see powder in the water :( The rooms are fine but everything is like very old. And some of the blankets had like dirty spots soooo Breakfast was quite good I liked the porridge and salmon there was also a lot of variety of Japanese and western food too so that's good
Ong C — Google review
Everything you need for a great Japanese ski holiday in one place!! So nice to come off the slopes and back to the hotel to enjoy the outdoor onsen, a glass of wine and some live music.
Charles O — Google review
Great hotel can’t wait to come back next year missing the onsen already ! Very large rooms which is needed with ski gear. Comfy beds and cleaned daily which is fantastic service.

Izakaya restaurant
When exploring the charming town of Myoko, no ski adventure is truly complete without a stop at Pontaro, a delightful izakaya that captures the essence of Japanese dining. This family-run gem offers an inviting atmosphere where you can savor authentic dishes like fresh tofu and delicious udon. The warm-hearted owners ensure every guest feels at home while guiding you through their impressive sake tasting selections.
Very nice, great food (fresh tofu, fried katsu kimuchi, gobou, well done udon). Traditional restaurant in the middle of Myoko one did not expect. Great sake tasting selection. A pearl of Myoko mountain.
Dule D — Google review
Lovely, small izakaya with counter and table service. Very glad we wandered a bit off of the main street in Myoko to eat here. Sake tasting was lovely, food very good, and a cozy atmosphere. Definitely recommend.
Jenn R — Google review
Ponta and the ladies are running a beautiful restaurant here, and if you are in Myoko over winter you owe it to yourself to visit. The food is very varied and each dish is interesting, and they have Yebisu beer and delicious homemade umeshu alongside local sake. Prices are fair, so we eat and drink a lot. What more could you want.
Toropetskii — Google review
We recently dined at this Japanese restaurant and were thoroughly impressed. The atmosphere is warm and authentically traditional. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food was genuinely authentic and delicious, providing great value for the experience. I highly recommend . It worth the visit!

Great food and sake selection! A must try while skiing in the area.

Amazing izakaya! Super friendly owners, excellent food, and good value for money. Really enjoyed my dinner here and a real gem in an area where there are very few places to eat. Recommend strongly!

A great family run Izakaya. I've studied in this region of Japan before and I totally recommend it if you are looking for an authentic local experience. You won't regret it.

Pontaro’s food and service was fantastic. Small local restaurant with great atmosphere. You have to try one of the local sake tasting sets. A must do when in the area. Oh, and it has been dumping deep pow all evening! Japow turns!!

I dined at Restaurant Shibata, making a reservation a day in advance. The ambiance was cozy and pleasant, with friendly waitstaff and a charming fireplace. The cuisine was outstanding, leaving me satisfied that I had made the right choice. Alongside my meal, I indulged in hot chocolate with marshmallows and enjoyed a draft beer accompanied by edamame. For dessert, the mocha ice-cream with cone and chocolate fondant were particularly delicious.
Probably one of the best meals we have had so far in Japan. Both meals were amazing and drinks were perfect. Price is definitely competitive for the area and worth every cent. Trying to book again before we leave. They also offer takeaway which seemed to have minimal wait times.
Eden J — Google review
We went to Myoko 🗻 at the peak of the winter ☃️ season and thank goodness 🙏🏼 we got our hotel 🏨 to make a reservation for us. Arrived on time ⏰ and was directed to our table immediately. Every table is pre-booked and if you are late, they will give up your slot. The restaurant is really neat 🍽️ and clean 🫧🧼! Their interior designer uses lots of wooden 🪵 furniture 🪑and the place is brightly lit 💡. The walls are adorned with retro posters 🏞️🖼️. There are bar 🍷 and table seating options available and if you are going  to order a lot of food, I will suggest the table seating option. Shibata serves typical Japanese 🎌cuisine, and the food is very well prepared 🧑‍🍳👍. We tried the Katsudon 🍛 and the rice 🍚 was so fragrant and the meat 🥩 was perfectly fried. Fried Chicken 🐓needs no introduction (we order two portions!), it came hot ♨️and as we dip in, the mayonnaise just melted 🫠. The Big Crispy Tofu and Gyoza 🥟🥟🥟 were pan fried to the perfect crispiness 😎. Crusty on the outside and wet and soft on the inside, #winner! Water🚰is free flow, just help yourself. Staff 🙋‍♀️💁‍♂️ are very polite but spoke limited English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 but hey, ok we got the order done no biggy. 😇 A pleasant visit to this restaurant and they hit all the right notes for the food. ✅✅✅ Just one note to remember is to make a reservation especially during the peak period. #goodjapanesefoodinmyoko #petfriendly

Early in the Season. We dropped by for Lunch. And had Great Service when we wanted to do a Special booking for Christmas. The Food was Good too!
Ruth C — Google review
They have a separate vegetarian/vegan menu, just need to ask for it when you arrive. I ordered the Big crispy tofu (not pictured), radish salad, gyoza and Udon. Tofu and salad are enough for one person. During peak season it can be very busy.
Ellie M — Google review
Very delicious. We stay 4days in Akakura onsen. And we visit this restaurant 2 times. The price is cheap. And their service is very good. Had better to reserved.
YJ C — Google review
We booked 1 day before. It was a warm and nice restaurant. Waitresses were polite and there was a small fire place. The food was excellent and we’re so glad we booked! We also had a hot chocolate with marshmallows and a draft beer with edamame. For desserts, the mocha ice-cream with cone and the chocolate fondant were really tasty. We will definitely come again if we visit Akakura Onsen.
Priscilla N — Google review
We were early in the season so not many restaurants were opened. We walked into Shibata and was lucky to get a table. Family run restaurant that serves typical ski resort food. My son had the cheese covered hamburg steak (He said it was good) while we had the special BBQ set for 2. English menu available
Kee H — Google review
The edamame was the highlight. The ramen was likely too salty. Good atmosphere however. Don’t order the draught beer. They do not pour it correctly and you end up with a glass of froth.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Akakura Onsen, Akakura Cafe-赤倉カフェ is a delightful spot to kickstart your day before hitting the slopes or simply unwind with friends and family. This charming cafe serves an array of fresh and healthy dishes for breakfast and lunch, including their popular Avo Smash with Poached Eggs and hearty Big Breakfast options. As the sun sets, it transforms into a cozy wine and whiskey bar, boasting an ambiance reminiscent of Sydney rather than traditional Japan.
Dropped in for coffee and was tempted by a delicious cranberry and walnut cookie that was served warm. Simply delicious

They offer a buffet menu for breakfast this winter season. It's a bit disappointing that it changed and isn't like the reviews:( but food is still good!
Cara — Google review
Pretty decent coffee! We ordered a flat white and americano. Satisfied with our drinks. There were not many food and generally pricey foods. Sandwiches go for 1500 yen at least. Water is provided.
Chee — Google review
Great coffee and western breakfast options. Loved the smash avo and poached eggs and bacon.
Jason W — Google review
Delicious matcha latter and Gf veg curry, also tried hibiscus tea. Difficult with Gf options tricky for coeliac as not separate fryer.
Steph M — Google review
I really enjoy the food and drink, super tasty...especially breakfast. The only thing i have to say is a negative is the inconsistency in opening hours. Its one of the few places here in the village that offers options for breakfast and lunch that arent a “hotel” restaurant and 8 out of 10 times i go its closed and its a bit frustrating. I wish it would post more accurate shop hours. I would still recommend going here but maybe call ahead and have a back up option ready.

If you're on the hunt for an authentic yakitori experience, look no further than 備長炭火やきとり 麻顔 -Yakitori Asagao-. Nestled in the heart of Akakura, this family-run gem offers a delightful array of grilled skewers that will tantalize your taste buds. In addition to their mouth-watering chicken and pork options, you can also indulge in unique specialties like whole roasted garlic bulbs.
This is truly a hidden gem 💎 at Japan 🇯🇵 - Myoko Town! Restaurant : One floor down ↙️ from the main road, to the left hand side, this small Izakaya (BBQ Sticks 🍢) restaurant takes about 20pax and 4 guys 👨‍🦳👱‍♂️👨👴🏻 runs the business. It is near impossible ❌❌❌ to get a table if you do not make a reservation (予約). Service : Top notch 👍👍👍! Expect funky 😎🥳🤩 Japanese service. Even the older 👨‍🦳 gentlemen has this hip hop dress code and they ooze the chill cool vibe. Spoke simple basic English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 but totally got the orders 🧾 and made recommendations for us too. Food : Just amazing! (See my pics!) you order up, they start cooking and you are served while piping hot! We ordered a wide variety of BBQ skewers 🍢. I will highly recommend the Chicken 🐓 Thigh 🍗, Pork 🐷Belly 🥓, Chicken 🐔 Skin and Fried Chicken with Tartar Sauce. The idea is to drink 🍻 and eat and not rush the order. They have a small bar and they are funky singing 🎶 and cooking 🍳and totally just chill. Awesome vibe! If you are staying at this town, get your hotel 🏨 to make a reservation for you! #izakayainmyoko #chillvibe #greatfood

INCREDIBLE! This is my third time to Japan and I have NEVER been so....just lost for words. I'd heard about this place from many locals but it just seemed impossible to get a seat at. EVERY TIME we went around dinner service we were told to come back later. One night we held out until 9pm and my my my....WORTH THE WAIT. Amazing tasty, traditional yakitori in a cozy vibe! Was willing to hand over a blank cheque for this experience. The whole bill came to $120 for three of us but we tipped them $30. I seriously cannot decide which party seemed happier. We were stoked. They were stoked. A very memorable experience!
Jason L — Google review
If you’re staying in the area grab a delicious bite (you’ll want many bites) before it becomes 1+ hours wait every night. We had the wings, chicken with green onions, chicken thighs and pork belly and everything was tasty. Tofu and the yakitori don were also great. They have a decent drink selection and beer on tap. Overally a very good apres ski meal.
Trang N — Google review
Come after 7.45pm if no reservation. This is the only yakitori place in reservation town. It is almost impossible to get a normal dinner timing here unless you reserve (like all the restaurants in this town). Food is decent but not as good as many ive had in tokyo. Some of the yakitori were too salty. My favourites were the Liver, heart and chicken breast. I tried every yakitori item and would only suggest passing on the torikawa(skin). Drinks are available too with great variety. A side note is that i think the owner had her kid there too and was disrupting the dinner seating. There were other kids gathering over games and bumping into me as i ate. It is quite expensive as well with a minimum of 2 sticks per order.
Chee — Google review
This is a very popular yakitori dinner option among the quaint skiing/snowboarding crowd staying around the Akakura Onsen slope esp around 6-8.30pm (sort of the apre ski eating spot), so it's best to ask your hotel to help you make a reservation if you intend to eat during that period. They are a non-pretentious cosy bunch making yakitori. We started with a pale ale that the owner's friend brewed, as well as a umeshu (plum wine) w hot water that the owner made herself. Both were delish and a great way to start while they grill your orders. We ordered the combo chicken plater which has various parts, in both the sauce and shio (salt). Both were nice, but i personally preferred the one seasoned just w simple salt cause their chicken alone was juicy enough. Would also like to highlight their fried chicken cartilage which had a special batter that was amazing. Kinda milk powder-ish. Their spicy fried rice was also super yummy, and the chilli sauce their use comes with a hint of citrusy tang. Love that place, and super nice to recharge w their bohemian vibes and freshly cooked food after a day of snowboarding!
Er F — Google review
This is by far my favourite restaurant in town. The pork and chicken hearts are both great. You need to book ahead if you want to get in
Alice L — Google review
Amazing amazing Yakitori. Some fantastic food at this restaurant. Suggested by our hotel owner, lack of Google reviews seem to point to this being a bit of a hidden gem. Meat really was melt in your mouth. Side dishes like rice and potato wedges were nothing special, but as a Yakitori alone, it has to be rated 5 stars.

Yakiniku restaurant
食道園 is a remarkable yakiniku restaurant located in Myoko, known for its traditional Japanese style and family-operated atmosphere. This establishment stands out for its commitment to providing an unforgettable dining experience by offering freshly grown vegetables from their own family farm. The owner, who is extremely hospitable, even went above and beyond by personally driving guests back to their hotel during busy taxi times.
Extremely delicious, reasonable price for this area. I had sirloin, rice and cabbage- this was purportedly sourced from the owners home/ hometown, and was so delicious I finished the entire serving that was meant to be shared. I will definitely be back. Please book ahead to avoid disappointment - you can get your hotel to reserve for you

We went to Myoko 🗻 at the peak of the winter ☃️ season and thank goodness we got our hotel 🏨 to make a reservation for us. Arrived on time ⏰ and was directed to our table immediately. Every table is pre-booked 🎟️ and if you are late, they will give up your slot. While eating so many people 👨🏼‍🦱🧔🏽‍♂️👱‍♀️👩🏼‍🦰came in to check if they could spare a table and they were all turned away. 🚷 This is a small Japanese Yakiniku BBQ restaurant. They have this mini hot 🔥 grill in the middle of the table and you just have to order the meat 🥓🥩🍖cuts and you can grill them right in front of you. Is it good? OMG, the marination is spot on 🎯! The meat cuts are juicy, tender and so delicious 😋😋😋! I removed the pork 🐷 belly and set it on the top of my rice for the melting fat oil to drip back into my rice! LOL 🤣😎😬#sickbutiloveit We ordered 🧾rounds and washed them all down with a few bottles of beer 🍺🍻🍺. It was brilliant! ✅✅✅ What I didn’t enjoy was the extraction system for the smoke 💨to get out wasn’t exactly at the best. 🫣 Somehow, during a BBQ session, there is always that one moment, everyone will just add the meat and oil at the same time and the entire restaurant will just smoke out! The BBQ smoke lingers on your jackets 🧥and clothing 👖🧣👚👕 for a while. So a pro tip is……. Bring a trash bag, once inside the restaurant, put all your jackets inside the trash bag and tie it up. (That’s what we did in Korea 🇰🇷) Staff 💁🏼‍♀️💁‍♂️ were very friendly and polite but spoke limited English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿but it wasn’t so difficult, as all we had to do was point at the pictures 🖼️. …. The meal was really, really good 👍👍👍! Given it was winter ❄️ and we were huddled up in a room for good BBQ meat 🥩🍖and beer, the whole experience was just unforgettable! Just one note to remember, do make a reservation especially during the peak period. #bestbbqinmyoko

Hands down our favourite restaurant in Akakura Myoko. Beautiful marinaded meat (sirloin our favourite) with local specialties (try the tongue - you wont be disappointed). Also a range of veggies as well, with great mushrooms. Don’t get put off by the corridor to the restaurant - behind the door is bbq heaven. Small, smokey and rustic. You MUST book ahead.

Best yakiniku (Japanese Barbeque) you could look for in Myoko. Family-operated so basically traditional japanese styled restaurant. They even offer fresh veggie grew in their own family farm, which is unforgettble. The owner(dad) is so nice that he even drove us back to our hotel when it was too busy time for taking taxi. Amazing one :)

The seating arrangements might be a bit challenging as the sofas are often occupied, but this minor inconvenience does not overshadow the overall positive experience. The staff members are friendly, welcoming, and thoughtful. It is conveniently located at the back of the gear rental shop, making it an ideal spot for a quick snack after a day on the mountain.
It was our spot to go to after a long day of skiing for the 5 days we were in Myoko. Lovely friendly staff, a nice selection of snacks, drinks and food with the lovely view of the mountains! Their fries were so yummy and so were the choco chip cookies, carrot cakes, warm brownies !

Coffee is great. The brownies are great if you’re lucky (two were amazing, the third one was so dry only vast quantities of coffee got it to go down). The staff are very friendly but will get your order wrong (we were here twice because the coffee was good, both times they confused stuff on pretty straight forward orders).
David B — Google review
Fantastic coffee and great atmosphere. I have come here throughout the season and the staff are consistently friendly and the vibe makes it a great place to spend time. The staff especially Jordy, Momo and Cruz always ask about my day and create a homely atmosphere. Can't wait to come back here next season 😄.

Food was lovely and probably going to return. Keep wanting to take the sofas though n people always get there first…so not really a worthwhile complaint, but the only one I have. The staff members are also kind, warm and considerate.

Quick snack after being on the mountain. Right in the back of the gear rental shop. Had an iced latte, Bailey’a hot choc, and banana bread! Delicious and with great service. Views as well if you’re in on a clear day!

Ski resort
Nestled in the picturesque setting of Mount Myōkō, Akakura Kanko Resort is one of the oldest ski resorts globally and offers a range of experiences for skiers of all levels. The resort features beginner-friendly slopes, challenging ungroomed courses for expert skiers, and a snow park. The iconic Akakura Kanko Hotel provides a luxurious ski-in, ski-out experience with its vibrant red roofs and proximity to the slopes.
Akakura Kanko Hotel is a nice place to stop for a cup of coffee, lunch or just for the views while skiing at the Akakura/Myoko slopes. Easy access (ski in & out). Excellent food and deserts to die for.

Literally waited in the lift ticket queue for 1hour yesterday! (Monday From 9:45am to 10:45) Only one person taking payment, but 2 staff at ticket counter. Ridiculous. If you’re buying 1-3day tickets use the QR code advance payment option and skip the line up, but more online options need to be made available. We only wanted a 4 hour ticket and therefore had to line up. Resort itself was fine, no lift queues.
Terry T — Google review
Awesome snow sports area, tons of ungroomed runs. Will definitely be back.
E Z — Google review
A variety of runs. Awesome off piste area to explore and have fun in deep powder. There is also a kebab shop at bottom of Hotel 2 chair lift. Love the kebab there!
DaHuZi J — Google review
The better side of the Akakura resort with more challenging runs, better terrains and tree skiing, enough to keep you entertained for 2 to 3 days. However, despite Covid, the place gets very crowded over the weekend with long queue to get the lift tickets and much longer queue to get on the Gondola. There are less freshies to be found as compared to other resorts (despite no presence of foreign tourists) and hence, I will avoid this place once international travel is allowed. To get here, take train from Tokyo to Nagano station, and from there to Myokokogen station and get the hotel/ryokan to pick you up from the station. The Kanko resort is about 5mins walk to Akakura Onsen. There are also plenty of ski in ski out accommodations in this area.
Emma T — Google review
Great mountain but the queue to buy tickets in the morning is ridiculous. Other large resorts have already gone online, so no wait needed for pre-bought tickets, while Akakura is still paper based. This wastes 30 min of a ski day… for which we still pay for tickets. Please please put in automated gates and online purchase.
Andrew D — Google review
Very nice hotel at Myoko Kogen ski resort. And the food that they serve is spectacular as well. We are the only foreign guests when we are there and the ski is not yet open for another week even though it is snowing everyday already.

Nestled diagonally across from the Ikenotaira intersection, Arakin Ramen is a beloved local gem that offers more than just your typical ramen experience. This family-run establishment has been delighting patrons for over 60 years with its diverse menu, which leans towards izakaya-style dining. After an exhilarating day on the slopes, there's nothing quite like savoring a steaming bowl of their signature Shio chashumen or indulging in the highly-praised miso ramen.
Great little restaurant, we ate here multiple times because the food was consistently good and fresh. Lovely service we felt very welcome. Highlights for me were the garlic salad and the pickles they were delicious. Enjoyed the ramen, beer and soft serve icecream too. There are some nice vegetarian options tasty veggies and tofu dishes.

Tasty and friendly in a quiet area. Two convenience stores next door. Great gyoza and yakitori followed by each person's choice of ramen (I agree shou ramen was to notch with an egg added). Tasty beer options, I chose the local version of Pilsener. Westerner friendly while remaining totally local.

Nothing beats stunning handmade ramen with the snow falling outside…. Small, friendly and simply the best ramen you will ever eat. A warning - the jumbo size is HUGE!! And you must book….
Mark R — Google review
A delicious and authentic bowl of ramen. We had the standard ramen and miso ramen. Also ordered a side of egg (marinated nicely), fried cartilage (one of the best we’ve had) and the cheese and rice bowl which is a creative yet delicious touch.
Cecilia P — Google review
It’s a 60 year old ramen place that serves a variety of dishes apart from just ramen. After a whole day skiing, we went for the ramen - we tried three different flavours, shioyu , miso and tomato - each has its distinctive taste and the serving was big with a lot of ingredients. The kitchen took time to cook which we appreciate, and we enjoyed the meal very much.

Nestled on the main street next to Aoyama Sports, Harumi is a charming izakaya that captures the essence of Japanese dining. Known for its delectable yakitori and a variety of traditional dishes, Harumi provides a warm atmosphere where guests can truly immerse themselves in Japanese culture.
Authentic Japanese food and local sake. We have been here twice with kids. Both times the food and service was excellent. The chicken skin dumplings and grilled fish are a must. The nabu is delicious. And their sake selection is very good.
Kalina C — Google review
I don't know why the previous ratings for Izakaya Harumi were lack lustre. I enjoyed my 2 dinners there. Went there one night, and somehow back on another (cause the other restos were fully occupied, haha, but i still enjoyed!). They offer a selection of humble food, but the entire crew was super warm and friendly. They have an english menu. On day 1, we had yakitori of the thigh, meat ball, and the pork belly. The sauced option was more juicy than the salted one, and they provided a scoop of a tangy chilli sauce by the side that I liked. We also had the kimchi hotpot. They dont really use korean kimchi, and it is more towards the ketchup saucy type but we ordered some extra udon to add it. On day 2, we went for the grilled fish and chose the slightly more expensive Atka Mackerel, and i enjoyed it! Nicely seasoned, still juicy with the fish fat and w some crispy grill. We also had the sukiyaki, and it was on the sweeter side, and had some greens and the chewy vermicelli-noodle thing among the meat. Both days we had their cold tofu and it is a humble dish that I loved how they non-pretentiously prepared. It is a clean, comfortable, warmly lit modern-izakaya place that definitely deserves more rating!

Food was average, but Beware once you sit down they will bring a small side dish (smaller than size of your palm) of some bamboo seasame snack (probably our fault should have checked) but they charged us an exorbitant 200 yen each for the tiny dish. When we asked for a breakdown of the expenses none was provided except the receipt provided! For 5 pax, we ordered 2 sets of Sukiyaki -2500 2800 yen plus rice/udon for 5 pax up to 1000 yen with 1 ocha drink. Even with 10% tax which was NOT indicated anywhere we were definitely overcharged. Avoid!!

We had no problem finding a table at the end of the ski season (very few people around). The food was great and came out quickly (despite a sign saying they were short staffed). The restaurant itself is super cute - we would recommend!

Very nice little family owned restaurant. Octopus salad was amazing with a beautiful light sauce (unsure exactly what it was). Smoked duck and bbq chicken (soy) yakitori was also excellent. Niigata rice was the best I’ve ever had. So clean and tasty. Service was great, friendly staff and an all round pleasant atmosphere and restaurant. Wish we could have tried more, but we just couldn’t fit it in. Definitely recommend trying this place.

Pretty good spread of western and Japanese fare, but to r Japanese food is nicer for sure. I’d skip the pizza and pasta unless you’re absolutely craving for one. Shabu shabu, yakitori and the tempura stuff were excellent! Service is quick and fuss free 👍

Hunter in Myoko was absolutely amazing! Love ordering on the iPad with photos and many languages. We had the Japanese version of the hot pot (with an extra egg), the vegetable tempura, and the pickled vegetables, along with a beer and an oolong iced tea. Every dish was perfect—10/10! The meal portions were generous, and we left feeling so satisfied. Will be back this week. The space itself was warm, exciting, and incredibly comfortable. The staff were so cute, friendly, and helpful, making the experience even better. They all spoke Japanese and were absolutely lovely. If you’re in Myoko, this is a must-visit! Cosy log cabin style interior with cute and quirky decor (soft toys and raggedy Anne type embroidered art). One of our go-to restaurants in Myoko, but can be popular so suggest booking in advance. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and food is delicious. The mixed tempura, salmon hand rolls, agadashi tofu and edamame are fabulous. They offer beer, a couple of wines and sakes. A must try if staying in Myoko.

TLDR: Get in before 6 as he's a one man show, try the spicy miso ramen and sweet potato gelato! By chance we stumbled into Yuki's ramen bar. He's a man of many talents. Not only a free riding champion but also an incredible ramen chef! He recommended the spicy miso ramen and it was a must try. The toppings make the ramen, there might be just a few but they are so flavourful! The local who sat next to us said his gelato was also a must try. He bakes his sweet potatoes and makes his own gelato. It was like salted caramel! With only 10 seats and a one man show get in early to secure an incredible meal! Enjoy the reggae music and snowboarding videos on show!

Easily the most delicious ramen in town. The spicy vegetarian was absolutely the best vego option in the area. Vibes were also good.

The food was excellent but the guy who was working the evening we visited was extremely rude, there was a mix up with our order where the chef brought out 2 Ramen bowls without saying a word, we assumed they were for us, but it turned out one was supposed to be for the couple sitting next to us. His reaction was extremely strange and made us feel very uncomfortable. It would have been very simple for the whole situation to be resolved but this guy was just angry and unhelpful.

The owner single handedly manage the shop, amazing! The ramen is great, they are mostly miso-based soup, but they also have shoyu and shio ramen. A hidden gem tucked away behind the main street area. Came here for drinks and snacks. Super friendly service, excellent fried tofu and enjoyable drinks. Little place with a friendly homely atmosphere. Highly recommend. When comparing this to Skatebar 2, this is a chill sit down place, the 2 is more of a young crowd louder music watering hole.

Drinks here are severely overpriced, charging 500 yen for tea, and up to 2,500 yen ($20) for a mega beer. Prices are obviously targeted at western tourists. Food was abysmal, ordered a fish and chips, and i got fish nuggets. Serving bad food is one thing, but marketing it as something it is not is outright unacceptable. Many other places around that are severely better options, come here only if you have no other choice, or if you’d like to throw money down the drain.

Food is decent but drinks are WAY too overpriced and they insist each person must order a drink. I get it that drinks are the way restaurants making most profit, but 700yen for less than half a can of Cola is just too greedy. *EDIT*: the owner reply saying the Coke is only 300(lunch) and 560(dinner) if you pay in cash is a complete outright lie! Both the paper and digital menu only had one price and it’s 700yen. And the waiters never mentioned any price difference either. Lowered my review by one star for this shameless lie.

As soon as you enter from the snowy outdoors, you are welcomed into a warm, cozy and inviting space where the severs were attentive and kind. Our selection of local sake, margherita pizza, and spinach and egg pizza were very tasty. And the apple dessert pizza was definitely a MUST as it had just the right amount of sweet, tart and cream. But the best part is the friendly and genuine owner who stopped plowing to find us space in his fully booked restaurant. Thank you and we will be back!

Wood fired pizza was mediocre. Wine list was lacking and over priced. Staff were not very friendly. Older style lodge house, bit of interesting paraphernalia, like old Singer sewing machines. Wouldn’t recommend for families with kids. Heard the carbonara is good from another traveler, but didn’t try it ourselves.

We love this place so much that we went there twice in two days. The highlights must be Apple and icecream pizza, teriyaki chicken pizza. All other dishes were great too. The woodfire oven-baked home special beef pizza is highly recommended, with the quality of dough and ingredients being perfect. The funghi and prosciutto pizzas are equally delicious, and the gelato con caffe is a must-try for its perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness. The staff members are friendly, adding to the welcoming atmosphere.

This is going to sound exaggerated and ridiculous but their home special pizza (beef) was the best tasting pizza I've ever had. I have a woodfire oven at home. I've had really good pizza abroad e.g. Italy, Switzerland, etc. For for me, the quality of the dough and ingredients, their respective ratios, and the cook time, were perfect. The staff are friendly and attentive, creating a warm atmosphere where visitors can relax after hitting the slopes.
Great little bar in Myoko! Good ambiance, good drinks, good games. Perfect Après ski spot!

Awesome restaurant and bar on the Main Street of Myoko. It became my regular spot! Heaps of seats and well priced food and cocktails. I had the Firestarter cocktail and it was amazing! I loved their Chicken Nachos and Fries! Staff were super friendly. They also do a happy hour deal!
Tara P — Google review
I was in the other night and the bar staff were amazing making us some tasty cocktails, the bar tender Patches made the best margarita I’ve ever had, and Tom was collecting glasses and cracking jokes all night. Such a great vibe can’t wait to go back again.

epic bar with epic vibes. friendly staff, specifically the cripple dishwasher who looked like she was hustling. 10/10 service would recommend when visiting myoko

Samurai Restaurant is known for its delectable hotpots, which are a must-try. It's advisable to make reservations at least a day ahead due to its popularity. The restaurant offers spacious tables that can accommodate large groups, making it an ideal choice for gatherings and celebrations.
Authentic japanese restaurant with a special western touch to it. This was one of the best sashimis ever. Everything was very tasty. They were happy to make my meal gluten free and they had gf soy sauce available. We didn’t have a booking but we didn’t have to wait as there were tables available. Sake is a must!
Inês M — Google review
I’m sorry but I have to be honest, I wouldn’t call this Traditional Japanese cuisine. Especially when you are in Japan, sushi selection is very limited... basically only Salmon, Tuna and “white fish” btw I have no idea what fish it was... Scallop and Eggs.... Would not recommended unless you want a western waitress to serve you... who can speak English... Very pricey too... refer to menu below...
Peter C — Google review
Great hotpots, but you have to reserve them a day in advance. Big tables, can fit large groups.

Okonomiyaki restaurant
Nestled away from the bustling streets of Akakura, Sennin Izakaya is a charming little bar in Myoko that feels like stepping into a cozy home. This intimate eatery, run by a delightful husband-and-wife team, offers an inviting atmosphere and a small yet satisfying menu featuring traditional Japanese dishes.
Best food we’ve tried in Myoko. Very lovely couple. Very limited seats so recommend to book in advance
Popsie A — Google review
I’m coeliac and they made me a gluten free okonominyaki which was so yum :) this was in a separate frying pan in a separate area then placed on the hot plate once the gluten ones were cooked.
Emma G — Google review
Some of the best traditional Japanese dining I’ve ever experienced. Okonomiyaki filled us up but the fried octopus and karaage chicken were both amazing; the best we’ve had in Japan. The food is amazing, the owners are lovely and it’s super inexpensive.
Bob K — Google review
Fantastic small restaurant run by a husband and wife who are very foreigner friendly and love sharing the magic of okonomiyaki with first-timers and veterans alike.
John W — Google review
We had a lovely experience here with our 14 month old. It is an intimate restaurant run by a husband and wife and we felt like they had invited us into their home. The okinomiyaki was really delicious, oishi!! They went out of their way to accommodate our toddler and she loved the attention! I can't rate it highly enough! It seems to be very popular as they were booked quite a few days ahead so make sure you book in advance. Arigatou gozaimasu!
Chelsea T — Google review
Such a privilege to eat at this place, there is only 2 tables, one at the bar for 2 people and a larger one on a tatami floor for 6-8 people. The chef cooks in front of you and the food is awesome
Kévin H — Google review
Great experience for anyone traveling in the area. An experience you won't forget..
Aaron L — Google review
We loved this 2 table plus 4 seat bar counter restaurant. Watching the owner/ski instructor/mountaineer and colleague, both full of personality, take the requisite time to cook up a huge dish and side offerings was such a great.

At Second Step JY, the culinary journey begins with chef and owner Jin Sato's commitment to sourcing only the finest ingredients. Nestled in a cozy setting reminiscent of intimate European eateries, this charming restaurant is located within the Sato family's home. The menu features fresh fish from the nearby Sea of Japan and locally sourced vegetables, all prepared with exceptional skill and care. Guests can expect not just outstanding food but also warm hospitality from the husband-and-wife team who run it.
Made a reservation for 2 for dinner via email. We ordered mixed salad, hairy crab (half) tomato pasta, roast chicken and a bottle of white wine. Every dish was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Price is on the high side but worth every penny for the portion size and taste. We would definitely revisit if we are back in Myoko Kogen and try out other dishes! Highly recommended and English menu is available.

This restaurant serves the best seasonal ingredients from the Shinetsu region with the best techniques. There is no doubt that using this restaurant on a special occasion with a loved one will provide the ultimate in hospitality.

We loved this place so much we came back twice in 5 days. The owner and waitress were so lovely. Very personable and engaging. They were even able to make me gluten free spaghetti so I was very grateful. Would highly recommend
Selina T — Google review
This is as genuine as you can get with service. They opened their restaurant just for us because they understood that we would otherwise have no place to eat. As a bonus the food was phenomenal, executed to a high standard and the wine list surprising for the location. Extremely kind, and very nice conversation with the husband and wife team that runs the place. Nothing could be better. Cannot wait to return next season.
Byron K — Google review
Had a great evening at this husband-and -wife duo Provençal restaurant with a Japanese touch. Sato-san makes a point to source the best local ingredients and we were lucky to sample some very tasty oysters from Sadoshima as well as an excellent crab pasta. The fried local squid and shrimps with olive, anchovy and garlic tapenade were a real surprise - so light and you could taste how fresh the seafood was. We had a small steak filet from sendai and also enjoyed the delightful, homemade pear sherbet to end. Thanks for hosting us, we hope to be back!

Hamburger restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Akakura, Mr Burger is a delightful gem that comes highly recommended for its mouthwatering offerings. While some may claim it’s the best burger around, many agree it's certainly impressive. The juicy patty, infused with chopped onions and topped with a perfectly drippy egg yolk, pairs beautifully with a toasted bun. This cozy spot is conveniently located at the front of Hotel Senke along Akakura's main street and boasts an inviting atmosphere run by friendly locals.
Locally owned business in Akakura serving burgers, crepes and Japanese dishes. The food was great and service super friendly. Burgers are more Japanese style like Mos or Freshness Burger so don't expect a massive smash burger.
Maggie L — Google review
Cozy place, had a tasty burger with fries and a delicious green tea. They have crepes, as well.
Mark R — Google review
Awesome, unpretentious place, owned by locals. Japanese and Western food, so you can feed fussy family. Great value, lovely people, a highlight of our trip.
Michael H — Google review
Cozy place, many options. The fish and chips was not outstanding. Good crepes. Considering the impact of COVID on costumers, it was an average experience. Would recommend if you are look for something quick and easy
Gabriele B — Google review
It's not going to win any awards. But it's a burger and fries in a holiday resort. The beer is cold and the fries are crispy. The burger is so-so.
Daniel H — Google review
So surprise the food is very delicious. The price is ok. The service is very good.
YJ C — Google review
Very disappointed. The comments were overall good so we tried this place, but we would have had better dinner if buying some food at the Konbini. The owner was pretending to be polite, but was very unfriendly (if you can understand Japanese you will feel very uncomfortable as a foreigner). There are nice restaurants in this area, so I would recommend to avoid this one.
Aurore J — Google review
Pretty mediocre. Food was alright, burger wasn't up to the standards of a regular restaurant, never mind a burger restaurant. Also sounded like there was a crèche with lots of children making noise in the other room. Much better places to eat in Akakura, avoid.

Restaurant
A.I.R. Myoko is a top choice for accommodation in the Myoko area, offering a warm welcome and attention to detail. The common space is inviting with games and books, while the spacious rooms feature comfortable beds and quiet surroundings. Guests can enjoy a beautiful Onsen after skiing or exploring. The hospitable staff has created a homely atmosphere, complemented by traditional Japanese flavors in the food and furniture inspired by Japanese design.
This a ski lodge during winter when we visited, the room style is Japanese with futons. I found it super comfortable and a great location to the ski resort, you can ski in and ski out. There is a run to the front door and you can ski to one of the chair lifts. The restaurant offers a degustation menu with paired drinks. It is mostly vegan, however on the day we ate we had some fish on the menu. It is hard to tell it’s vegan as the food is delicious. The staff are so friendly and were quite a few Australian’s working there. The lodge is on the edge of town and it’s a short walk to the Main Street, where there are numerous restaurants, a couple of ski hire places and convenience stores. You could get most things without going further.
Nicholas V — Google review
Myoko is such a great mix of ski resort and natural hot springs, but what really makes it stand out is the little local village vibe—you don’t find that in many places besides maybe Nozawa. After a soak in the onsen at Air Myoko, I sat by the fire and looked out at the snowy mountains…cozy and relaxing. Can’t wait to come back!
K — Google review
Had a memorable dinner at Air, with every dish beautifully crafted by Kelvin and Kai. Each dish was thoughtfully presented and explained, using incredibly fresh ingredients and wonderful flavors. I particularly loved the first salad dish and the fish course. Loved the communal table vibe—it was nice to have light chats and even pour sake for each other.
Story S — Google review
Had a sublime dining experience at AIR. Six course chefs table dinner, all apart from 1 dish was vegan (fish), and the swap out to Shiitake and Pumpkin was incredibly delicious and filling. Amy did a fantastic job hosting and explaining the sake and wine pairing. Love that everybody chooses their personal sake cup for the night. The beautiful long table makes this a social dinner without any fine dining stiffness. Diverse crowd, had interesting chats! Music was a 10 easy Make sure you show up on time!

My family was lucky enough to stay at A.I.R. Myoko for 5 nights. It was a great place to stay with wonderful staff and a great breakfast. The family room was perfect for our family of 4 and the beds were very comfortable with good quality bedding and towels. I would highly recommend staying here if you want a ski in and ski out location.
Aussie F — Google review
We had the great fortune to enjoy dinner at AIR. It was a seafood and plant-based degustation with matched wines and sakes eaten at a communal table. The food was both creative and delicious, the drinks were varied and well-matched, our host (Lewis) provided great commentary, and the communal eating was a special delight. We enjoyed great conversations with new friends made during a wonderful evening to remember.
Stuart E — Google review
We booked the family room with views of the ski field, both the futons and the western beds were very comfortable and the doona was so big and fluffy. The dinner experience was fabulous and even my no vegan teenagers loved the food. The location for ski in ski out was perfect, breakfast delicious. We felt like we were in a very welcoming home, perhaps a little bar serving a drink by the fire would be a lovely addition in the years to come. We will definitely be back.
Anderson J — Google review
Staying at A.I.R. was one of the most relaxing and beautiful travel experiences I've had. The room was luxuriously comfortable while very simple and channeling details of traditional Japanese hospitality. It's super close to the slopes (actually in the middle of a ski run), and the private onsen is great for unwinding and relaxing after skiing. I'd also strongly recommend eating at the restaurant. It was delicious, slow, and a lot of fun. 10/10!

Skatebar Second is a bar and grill that offers excellent service, friendly employees, and prompt food delivery. It advises caution while using the half pipe to avoid potential arm injuries. Additionally, Callum might have the fortune of experiencing a complete lunar eclipse on his face. The establishment also provides free dart games for patrons to enjoy.
5 star rating for this place because it was AVAILABLE WALK IN. Every other place is this town is reserved. It was such a relief to find this place. Ok in all honesty, the food is good here. Try to fried chicken and pork. Both juicy and tender! The drinks are quite expensive but the variety is there. It also opens till late.

Fairly basic small bar with a range of drinks and food. Only one beer on tap. They happy a happy hour (first 2 hours, 4-6pm) but be careful to what is included. For us it was only some medium drinks and even then second time I was charged full price at 5pm and had to double check after which was given the correct price.
Dmitry S — Google review
This dive bar in Akakura is an absolute gem! The atmosphere is laid-back and full of good vibes, with friendly locals who make the experience even more fun. The service felt genuine and welcoming, adding to the bar’s unique charm. The drink selection is top-notch, with a fantastic variety of cocktails and drinks to suit every taste. But the real surprise? The ramen—easily the best we had during our entire stay in Akakura! Rich, flavorful, and perfectly comforting after a long day on the slopes. If you’re looking for a fun night out with great food, drinks, and even better company, this place is a must-visit. I don't know why others don't review it better.
Brett N — Google review
Of all restaurants that we have visited in Akakura Onsen, this Izakaya was our least favourite in food quality and variety. And the food is NOT cheap. In fact it was the most expensive place we ate in Akakura Onsen. Probably more of a drinking place (they serve extra large glasses of highball and beer). Service was excellent and the place is lively with music and people playing darts and jackpot machine.
Kee H — Google review
This might be the only place you can get in. The food tastes decent, but ~$24aud is a lot to pay for a small bowl of ramen.
James P — Google review
Was told happy hour was from 4-6pm. Was charged full price for a Giant Lemon Sour. When asked why, they said that only the smaller sized drinks were eligible for happy hour. They should have told us before making the order.
