Avignon, a city in the Provence region of southeastern France, sits on the banks of the Rhône River. It was once the seat of the Catholic popes from 1309 to 1377 and remained under papal rule until it became part of France in 1791. The city's rich history is evident in landmarks like the imposing Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace) and medieval stone ramparts that surround it.

The Bridge of Avignon, also known as Pont Saint-Benezet, is a famous medieval bridge with four arches spanning the Rhone River and featuring a small chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas. Located in the culturally rich city of Avignon in the Provence region, this historic site is just one of five UNESCO world heritage sites in the area.
I spent around 20 minutes at the Pont d’Avignon**, and it was absolutely worth it. The bridge, though only partially standing today, carries so much history and charm. Walking along the remaining arches with the Rhône River flowing below and the old city walls in the background feels like stepping into a living postcard. Even in a short visit, you get a real sense of Avignon’s medieval past — the connection between the bridge and the nearby Palais des Papes is fascinating. The site is peaceful, with lovely views over the water and the surrounding countryside. For just 5 EUR, it’s a quick but meaningful stop — perfect for anyone exploring Avignon and wanting a glimpse of its history and beauty in under half an hour. Visited: October 10, 2025 Duration: ~20 minutes Highlights: The historic arches, river view, and quiet atmosphere that captures the spirit of old Avignon.

To be honest I cannot say I liked it! Lots of people, they check your bags. The same way to go to the gardens but when we bought tickets no one told us the gardens are closed for 2 years already. They have toilet in the corner. Views much better from the castle. Maybe 🤔 from another side of the river view much better.
Julia H — Google review
A lot of people, nice walk on the bridge. Even better if you walk up to the wall. If you are there for tourism, it would worth going at least once in your lifetime.
Brian Y — Google review
You're telling me I have to pay to walk on a bridge that doesn't even go the full way across the river it is built on? Do you know how many bridges I have crossed--for free--that DO fully cross their respective river? EVERY OTHER BRIDGE I HAVE EVER CROSSED. It does offer a nice view of the city, at least.
Connor G — Google review
Definitely worth a visit! The entrance is only €5, and although the audio guide can be a bit confusing at times, the visit is still very worthwhile. The video about the reconstruction is especially interesting and clearly explained. In short: a small price for a rich and unique experience!

Nice chapels unexpected on bridge with Modern exhibit Cosmos. We loved river view too! Best buy joined ticket with pope Palace and gardens

The Bridge in the Nowhere — because, well, it’s not exactly taking you anywhere anymore! But that’s part of the charm of the Pont Saint-Bénézet, a historic bridge in Avignon that stands proudly as a symbol of the city, even though it no longer spans the Rhône River entirely. Fun Facts: • The bridge originally had 22 arches, but now only four remain. The missing arches were destroyed over time due to floods and natural wear. • Saint Bénézet, after whom the bridge is named, was a shepherd who, according to legend, was told by God to build the bridge. He supposedly carried a large stone across the river by himself to prove his divine mission. • The bridge is also famously featured in the popular French song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon,” which has made it internationally recognizable. This beautiful structure is a marvelous sight, offering a peaceful stroll across the remaining arches. The view of the Rhône River and the surrounding city is stunning, and the serene walk gives you a sense of stepping back in time. You can almost imagine how it must have felt centuries ago when the bridge was a vital crossing point connecting the north and south of the river. As for the history, the Pont Saint-Bénézet dates back to the 12th century and was a critical part of medieval trade routes. Over time, however, it fell victim to both natural disasters and warfare, leaving only a few of its arches still standing. Despite the passage of time, the bridge remains a powerful reminder of the city’s medieval significance and the ingenuity of its builders. Admission is €5 for adults, and it’s free for those under 18. For visitors over 64, there is a discounted rate — €4.

Good day outing activity. One bridge and chapel in the middle with historic importance to avignion. You need to buy the ticket the price doesn't justify it . However beautiful on a sunny day out . If you have a plan to go to palace de Pope which you should do ....they will seel combo tickets where you will find tickets couple of euros cheaper . Give yourself 3 hours for descent exploration for both attractions. Do not each musesls and french fries from any of the shops nearby . It's all pre cooked and served cold . We wasted money in 2 different occasions. Do good research and enjoy lunch . Book in advance as place is very popular.

La Guinguette Du Vieux Moulin is a traditional restaurant in Villeneuve-Lès-Avignon that offers fresh seafood and exceptional meats. With a terrace overlooking the Rhône, it provides a charming setting for up to 150 diners shielded from the Mistral wind. Visitors can enjoy drinks by the riverside, away from city noise thanks to the canopy of trees providing pleasant shade even at midday.
We didn't have a reservation for lunch, but the staff accommodated us, first for drinks then they asked if we wanted a plate of freshly caught fish, fried to perfection! With our bottle of wine, why not!! Fantastic service!!! Thank you!!

A bit of a hidden gem. By chance we discovered this place. Great location and quite OK food, but on the very ordinary side. It might be a good idea to book a table. When we arrived around 1900 it was completely empty, but half an hour later almost all tables were occupied.
Jesper F — Google review
We stopped by this restaurant during lunch time. We asked if it would be possible to only have drinks. Sure, no problem - came the answer. Just located on the bank of the Rhône river, this place feels far away from the city as you can't hear the traffic noise. Thanks to the trees' canopy, the temperature remains bearable even at mid day. The restaurant was two thirds full. Yet, service was flawless. It seems that locals enjoy lunching here. That means the food is good. We truly had a good break.
Maxi M — Google review
The view is breathtaking, especially when you stay for sunset. Food is ok nothing stunning service is OK too especially when busy. I would return for a dessert.

Beautifully located restaurant. Even though it can be hard to find, it's worth it when you do! The view of the river is stunning in the evening. They serve great food for a fair price. And everything is served with a smile.

The staff here is unbelievably rude, and the woman serving us was beyond aggressive—almost hostile. We were absolutely shocked by her behavior. This place pretends to be somewhere you can relax and enjoy good vibes, but in reality, it’s the opposite: neglectful, unfriendly, and completely unprofessional. The woman who seems to be the boss was the worst of all—arrogant, impolite, and aggressive. We couldn’t stand it, so we asked for the check right after eating and left, even though we had planned to stay for dessert and coffee. Their attitude was so disgusting and unacceptable that it ruined the entire experience. Honestly, if I could give them less than zero stars, I would. A total disaster—I will never set foot in this place again. Since I cannot reply directly to your comment, I will clarify here. What you claimed in your response is simply not correct. I was taking pictures at a time when the restaurant was completely empty — no guests were there yet. That should not have bothered you, especially since my intention was positive: to show your place to friends abroad and encourage them to visit. It’s unfortunate that you chose to see this as something negative. Regarding my so-called “unpleasant behavior,” that was not my starting attitude — it was my reaction to the neglect and poor service I experienced. If we are to talk about behavior, then let’s also mention yours: shouting at my 11-year-old son when he politely asked about his phone that was charging inside. That is not how a professional host should treat a child. Other guests also noticed your reaction. I insist on saying it clearly: your attitude was very bad, and you left us with a terrible impression. The only positive experience we had was with the gentleman inside, who was polite and respectful — unlike you.

Small place with delicious French cuisine. We had the best duck of our trip here! Made to perfection! Delicious! The foie gras is also very good, worth to try if you never had or if you’re a lover. Try to make a reservation first, to make sure you get a table. The kitchen of the restaurant closes at 9:30, make sure to put your orders in before that. The waiters are fast and very polite, both speak English.
Maria B — Google review
Service was good, even though they forgot our wine orders it was rectified quickly. The pork main dish was delicious and was super enjoyable. The flavours of the duck also stood out! We enjoyed our escargots and frogs legs starters too and finished off with the apricot tart and praline dessert both of which were amazing. Would 100% return to eat it all again (especially the pork!)
Lochana — Google review
What an amazing experience! The food menu is small and simple, and delicious. The wine menu is smaller than I thought it would be, but loaded with killer wines. Everything we got was fantastic. They also have a huge selection of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks that are great. And, the people running this place could not be better. Very friendly and helpful, and happy to answer questions and make recommendations. Lastly, they have a great in-store “wine cellar” where they sell many of the bottles from their by-the-glass menu. We bought a couple bottles to take home. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Chris S — Google review
Excellent restaurant in the heart of Avignon. Super friendly stuff and delicious food! Their wine list wonderful and reasonably priced. I dine here twice during my stay and in both times everything was absolutely perfect! Don’t search elsewhere but home dine here :)
Ayelet K — Google review
Very relaxed but attentive service. If i lived in Avignon I could easily call this my go-to restaurant. My first experience with escargot in France - they were wonderful. American restaurants (even fine dining venues) tend to smother them with garlic & oil. These were much more gently seasoned & full of complex flavors - truly delicious!
James H — Google review
Really amazing little wine bar with great dishes. We were recommended a lovely white local wine. The burrata and the eggplant caviar were standout but everything was delish! Staff was very friendly and professional - highly recommend!
Hana O — Google review
Awesome restaurant with high-quality food and great wines. Friendly staff provide little extras such as amuses and gourmandises. The Dorade and escargots are recommended. Well worth a detour.

This charming restaurant features an inviting terrace that overlooks the stunning Palais des Papes, creating a picturesque backdrop for your dining experience. Under the expert guidance of Chef Jean-Remi Joli, guests can indulge in creative and refined French dishes that showcase local flavors and ingredients.
Highly recommended for their chef specials and great service. Love all the dishes that are so flavourful and infused with spices that makes us want to be back for more. The bartender is also good in preparing a nice cocktail and wine recommendation to pair with our food. So happy to find this place to celebrate our Christmas dinner.

Amazing food and impeccable service. Vegetarian options on the menu are great!
Sibley S — Google review
The waitress was extremely rude and impolite! We were 4 people, we wanted to order starters and a main dish, as well as drinks for all of us. While we were ordering se left the table without explaining a thing! She came again, claiming that our order wasn’t enough for 4 persons
Alex T — Google review
The setting looks nice, just unfortunately we didn’t get any service or food. The waiter found us a table, then asked us to move to another area if we only ordered beverages, which is totally understandable. But he just left us like this for half an hour— I then found out he did not take down our order at all when we had to leave. I checked other reviews and saw people with children and those of my ethnicity got bad services as well, so that brought other concerns. Anyways, the restaurant has a good view to the plaza, but I would only recommend it to Caucasian men with no families to take care of.
X Q — Google review
ABSOLUTELY APPALLED BY RESTAURANT OWNERS BEHAVIOR! AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL EXPENSE! My son (13) was very sick and needed to use a bathroom urgently. I asked a man if he could use the bathroom, which I was willing to pay for and buy a coffee as expected in Europe etc. This man, who then advised me he was the restaurant owner, a tall, older man with a dark presence started abusing me, on his ranting tangent he told me "He was here to sell food, not toilets and to go and use the public toilets" Being a tourist and only just getting to the place off a bus, not knowing where the public toilets were and under the circumstances, this was the best possible option at the time. The lack of empathy, humanity and understanding expressed by this man was absolutely disgusting! Never have I experienced this behavior from someone in my life! I gave him a piece of my mind and advised that I would be sharing my experience on all platforms, in which he did not seem phased whatsoever. From reading other peoples reviews on Google and Trip Advisor, it is clearly evident this man has no level of emotional intelligence or customer service expertise. I can't comment on the food, however the lack of people in his restaurant in a highly populated tourist area speaks for itself. Spend your money at a restaurant, where you are welcomed and treated with kindness and respect.
Lauren W — Google review
Food is ok. Service is nothing special but staff and mostly the chef are very friendly. However the location is just unbeatable in Avignon. Right in front of the palace. No car. Just perfect. In the winter i would give this place a much lower rating, because you can eat better elsewhere. But when the weather is good it is the perfect place for drinks with finger food or a romantic diner.

We arrived on a Tuesday evening at about 8:30pm without a reservation. Approached a waiter who found the manager and we were seated outside immediately. I am garlic and onion intolerant so I usually know to eat fish which is the easiest to accommodate. My swordfish was excellent. The chef substituted potatoes for the sides. My friend had the swordfish with no accommodations and she said hers was excellent as well. The chef came out to speak to the diners after dinner. A very friendly person snd competent chef!

Aubergine is a charming restaurant located in Villeneuve-les-Avignon. Visitors have praised the attentive and friendly service, with one guest noting that the waiter made an effort to converse in French and provided helpful language tips. The restaurant offers an excellent selection of pre-dinner drinks and delicious food, although some diners found their steak and duck slightly overdone. The atmosphere is described as pleasant, but some guests felt that the tables were small and inconveniently located.
Lovely family run restaurant. Terrace is very romantic and inside looks cozy. Food was great and flavourful. Would recommend eating here to spend a wonderful evening.

The food here was amazing. I got the burger and it was a nice refreshing burger that was pretty American. My husband got the porc ribs with mashed potatoes and it was very delicious. The drinks were good too. The atmosphere was more on the warmer side, probably not super kid friendly (if anyone needs to know). When we first went in the first girl was pretty rude. She made us wait 5 minutes while staring at us. And then finally asked why we were there. I said to eat and she said that we couldn't eat until 7 (for about 10 minutes). No biggie, but she was just pretty rude about it all. We went back after the 10 minutes and the next waiter was super nice! She would even do French with me and English with my family. She was amicable and very quick to help us understand. Because of this we didn't feel judged asking questions and we all got food we actually liked.

We had a wonderful dinner at Aubergine in Villeneuve-les-Avignon. This restaurant is about 10 minutes drive from Avignon. We sat out on the terrace, which was charming and perfect for a relaxed evening. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was quick, and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. APPALLING. Worst service I’ve ever encountered Wine was warm We waited 1 hour 15 minutes for our meals which I had PRE-ORDERED to help the chef. Dessert was foul. An apple crumble with almost no crumble. Huge bill for crap food. Bread was hard and stale. Absolutely NO CARE apology or concern from the staff either. Do yourself a favour and DO NOT go here.

An ok meal close to our hotel. Unfortunately the cod was slightly overcooked and the risotto had weird additions like almond slivers and uncooked tomatoes. Didn't love the dinner, but it will do in a pinch.

(Translated by Google) A wonderful discovery, I'd even say a gem. We were looking for an Asian restaurant in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and based our choice on Google reviews. We weren't disappointed, quite the opposite. The dishes are delicious and truly homemade. Authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Being Vietnamese myself, I was pleasantly surprised to rediscover the taste of my family's authentic cooking, and it's a real pleasure. The prices are really reasonable; the menu, including a starter, main course, and dessert, is only €23. The owner is very kind and welcoming; kudos to him for managing the service all by himself. There's a wide selection on the menu. The hygiene is excellent (I've never seen restaurant restrooms so clean). The terrace is pleasant and pretty. We won't go anywhere else but to Sa La Ka. It's popular; I recommend making a reservation (closed Wednesdays and Thursdays for lunch). Convenient parking right in front. Parking juste devant pratique.

The Pipeline in Avignon is a pleasant surprise for travelers seeking a place to dine. The restaurant offers a solid selection of tasty food with generous portions and an extensive variety of draft and bottled beers. The service is fast, friendly, and multilingual, creating a warm and attentive atmosphere. Additionally, the bar features live music, ample parking, and a happy hour. While some visitors found the food disappointing due to creamy sauces, others were impressed by the fantastic pizza offerings.
We ordered the chicken salad and chicken burger. The 5 stars are for their size of serving. The salad is equivalent to a meat main course and the fries come with the burger could fill every space you have in the stomach. I like the food in overall but they are a little less flavourful especially the chicken on both dishes and that's not particular to this place, generally that's how I find the food in France. I like the taste of the sauce with the burger, that's the main flavour of the burger. Recommended especially for a place for salad.

On the way from the center to the station, we were looking for a place to have lunch in Avignon for quite a long time. We went to this restaurant more out of desperation, we didn't want to eat right on such a main street. What a nice surprise. They have a solid selection of food. Everything we had was very tasty, the portions were generous. There is a huge selection of draft and bottled beer. The service was very nice, helpful and above all fast. And the prices? Very very affordable for the center of Avignon. Total satisfaction from our side, we highly recommend.

Great food, it was absolutely delicious and the beer was good too. There were some homeless people who tried to beg, but the staff immediately sent them away, they almost kicked them away. If you're looking for some great food I would definitely recommend coming here.

This is a great bar. Has live music and is great selection of beverages. The pizza is also with a good size. Parking is relatively easy and a short walk from the downtown. Also they offer a happy hour.

Great place to have a cheap and nice breakfast - and really good burgers and chips. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and plenty of rock music 👍
Hayley L — Google review
Great beer selection, amazing bi/trilingual staff, and fantastic food! I only write reviews when blown away by an establishment, but hot out of the gates (open for 2 weeks at the time of writing) this bar seems to have it all! Having just come from Italy, I thought I was jaded for pizza but the food and pizza here absolutely holds its own! Combined that warm and attentive staff, relaxed environment, and reasonable pricing, this place checks all the boxes. A must visit in Avignon if you like beer, pizza, or indoor/outdoor relaxation
Jeremy P — Google review
Well decorated pub with a great selection of beers from around the world. Food was disapointing however as most items are stuffed with mayonaise or other creamy sauces.
Sylvio H — Google review
Didn't honour their happy hour. When questioned they lied about what drinks were on their happy hour list.

Les Célestins is a charming café located in a picturesque square with a lovely fountain, offering a delightful spot to enjoy delicious sandwiches and coffee. The café's signature sandwiches, such as the tomato mozzarella and potato-Larson-cheese brulee with caramelized onion, are made with ficelle bread from Violette, providing the perfect balance of crunchiness and softness.
Great IPA for €7.50, large patio on a big beautiful square, friendly and attentive service. Great place to sit and drink.

Best outdoor cafe in Avignon. Great staff, English is not a problem, and the best square in town. Their onion jam is incredible. And the beer and wine selection is good.

Always the nice place to have drink enjoying the atmosphere provençale with lovely fontaine just behind 🙏🏿

A great bar located in a lovely square. It is a very friendly and easy-going place where the wines and the beers are well priced (the Cegales, a local pils beer, was my favourite). The clients are a mixed bunch of friendly locals and teh odd tourist (like me). Alex runs the place and you'd be hard pushed to meet a more friendly an efficient manager.

This great little café is located in a square with a lovely fountain where you can sit outside and eat or drink. It's a perfect place to start your day enjoying one of their baguettes and a coffee; and then to return and finish your day later into the evening with a beer, a glass of wine, a hot dog or another baguette. The staff are very friendly and all speak English. The setting is wonderful, and it's easy to spend lots of time here just people watching and enjoying the atmosphere and relaxing. This café is frequented by locals, students and tourists, and for me, it is on my must visit list every time I return to France and Avignon on my trips from England.

Came here immediately from the train at 2:00pm (14:00) in need of a quick bite and coffee. Their €4,90 sandwiches chaud were incredibly good. We got the tomato mozzarella sandwich and the potato-Larson-cheese brulèe with caramelized onion sandwich. They were so right and satisfying. They use ficelle bread from Violette, and it is perfect - crunchy and soft. The cafe creme was a bit rich, but very satisfying. We would go back often.

A cool place to enjoy your beer, in a self service bar. It's also a choice of the locals and a good way to mingle and exercise on your French.

A couple lost Americans needed a place to watch the Broncos game, and this bar opened early for us! Marc was an excellent host, patient and accommodating. It is a self service concept, with dart boards and great music. A great place to knock the dust off.
