I LOVE this bakery!!! The first time I went, I was shocked at how long the lineup was, and at the fact that they have two parking lots and a parking lot attendant, but after trying their breads, I totally see why! My favorite was the chocolate castella bread, SO GOOD!!!! I make it a priority to stop by here when I’m in the Kansai area. Only con is how busy they are (I waited 30+ minutes in line. This was during New Year’s week so it was probably extra busy). It’s a 5-10 minute walk from Obaku station, taking the JR Nara Line.

I like the chewiness of the bread and they just look so attractive so I would drop by to get some every time I’m in the Kyoto area. But I do feel it’s a bit overrated too given that their bread is on the sweet and heavy side (some pointed out correctly that they might as well be regarded as dessert). It’d be much better if they can help heat up the breads.

It's been said it is one of the best bakery in Kyoto, and I have to say...darn right! I'll strongly recommend their curry bread and maybe...everything else. Just remember that Tamakitei is really famous and there will be a lot of customers, so be sure to come early.

Tamakitei is a popular bakery on the outskirts of Kyoto, near Uji campus of Kyoto University. Even though it’s a bit out of the way, people keep coming—so much that they have staff managing the line outside. It’s close to JR and Keihan Obaku stations, so getting there by train is pretty easy. I first missed it because they only open four days a week (Thursday to Sunday). When I finally went back, the small shop surprised me with three parking lots and a strict entrance system to control the crowd. Their bread varieties are wide and tasty, satisfying all kinds of cravings. I bought ten pieces and spent about 4200 yen. The bread feels like European style but isn’t too hard—just right. Sometimes popular items like mille-feuille rolls sell out early, but everything I tried was good, both sweet and savory. If you’re in Uji, this bakery is worth the wait and the trip.

Came here for Matcha ice cream at 辻利兵衛本店. It is located in the heart of Uji and this historic teahouse has been serving premium matcha since 1860. We got to indulge in their signature soft serve, elegant desserts, and delicate matcha cake. Rich, smooth, and not too sweet — everything was beautifully balanced and full of authentic green tea flavor.

This is a long walk from the train station but totally worth it. Not crowded at all. Me matching all the food to be Matcha is too much 😆 If you are going there, try to mix and match. Also bought the matcha cookies to bring as present for friends back home

Lovely cafe in Uji! Went here just before we caught the train back to Kyoto station. The dining area facing the garden looked so relaxing and I heard that you have to book the tables in advance. The highlight for me would be the parfait, it’s amazing! 💚

We went to Nakamura tokichi but there was three hours wait 🤯. We decided to visit Tsujirihei. It was extra walk but worth it. The food was delicious. We tried the matcha latte, ice cream, and cake—all three were excellent. The staff were also friendly and pleasant to interact with.

I did my research before arriving Uji, the famous region for Japanese Matcha, and knew where I wanted to go for some awesome matcha desserts. We took the train to the downtown Uji and checked out a few different tea shops, and they were all jam packed with tourists and the experience was not pleasant. So I told my husband I wanted to walk to Tsujirihei Honten and had dessert there instead. The walk was a bit long, as you have to walk through the town to get to Tsujirihei Honten. It was located in the middle of residential area but you can’t miss it. You will walk thru a few stairs to the main garden area, then enter by the main entrance which was a bit hidden from the sight. Once you enter, you were greeted by the traditional japanese decor and it was very pleasant and comfortable inside. We opted to sit by the big window and the view was quite calming. We ordered the Delux Uji Matcha Parfait and Matcha Zenzai with jelly. Both were good but we liked the parfait the most, as it came with many toping and champagne. Overall, we highly recommend Tsujirihei Honten. You’ll definitely get a better experience here.

FEB 2024 (Re-visit) This place is a must visit for me when I am in Uji. Compared to the other teahouses in the morning hours, Tsuji Rihei is relatively quiet, maybe because it is quite a walk from the JR station away from the main shopping strip. However I really like the quiet and relaxing atmosphere with a comfortable seat and a view of the garden. The parfait here is luxurious, definitely on the top for matcha parfaits. This time I had the seasonal strawberry matcha parfait and it was sweet and delicious, maybe not for everyone as the bottom is jelly infused with champagne. Also they have many types of tea at different price points to choose from. APRIL 2023 Visited the teahouse twice and both times I was seated at the front counter seat, highly recommend if you come by yourself or with one other person as you get a great view of the garden and a comfy cushion chair. It was not busy when they just opened so it was quiet and relaxing. Tried a few matcha sweets and two different parfaits; one was matcha and the other was first harvest green tea leaves (seasonal). They were all delicious and not too sweet but I particularly enjoy the parfaits more; delicate yet strong tea flavor, rich and sweeter components at the start and light and refreshing towards the bottom of the parfaits. The tea drink also included a sweet bean paste wagashi on both occasions (not sure if it applies to all or only selected drinks). Staffs were friendly and service was pretty fast.

little bakery tucked away in one of the small alleys. we went there for breakfast. bakes were freshly made and delicious. we tried their potatoes and bacon, chestnut danish and lemon cream pastries. the pastries were filled with chestnut and lemon cream mashes, which melts in your mouth. if you want to try their croissant, do head down early as it was fully sold out when we arrived at 11am. strongly recommend if you are in the area near gojo ☺️

I loved everything we got from here. We had a savoury pastry filled with potatoes & bacon, scallion open toast, sweet pastry filled with beans, and a cookie with yuzu & white beans. They were very good.

In a small machiya style old house, this bakery “mashed” in the epic love story of “The Tale of Genji”. After 2 weeks of travelling Japan and many incredible food experiences, I started missing German bread because all you find here is toast, donuts and (tasty) pancakes. Location is pretty near to nishiki market so it is easy to access. Bread are fresh from the oven. Seems they don't hold a lot of inventory. That's why it kept fresh.

The redeeming quality was the melon bread was very good. If you are really interested in baked goods, you would probably be fine with a 7-11 or another Boulangerie location that is closer to walking traffic.
