Apex Bakery is a delightful gem nestled in the heart of Barossa, renowned for its time-honored recipes that have stood the test of generations. Among its offerings, you'll find their iconic salt sticks—chewy sourdough delicately sprinkled with caraway and sea salt, making them a must-try for anyone visiting. This bakery is part of an exciting tasting trail that showcases the region's culinary treasures, perfect for families eager to explore new flavors together.
What a great pepper pie ❤️ One of the best I've had. Perfect temperature to eat. The chunky steak filling was exactly that. And the flavour was perfect. The pastry was thin, well cooked around the base. Whereas the top is thicker, light and crispy. Will definitely go back. 😉

My partner and I visited Apex Bakery in Tanunda hoping for a warm, satisfying pie on a chilly morning. The wood-fired bakery caught our eye, but sadly, the experience didn’t live up to the expectation. From the outside, the bakery is quite plain and the outdoor tables were dirty, which already set a bit of a tone. Inside, the store was empty, and despite several staff being present, there was no greeting or acknowledgment, which felt a bit unwelcoming. The range of food was surprisingly limited. There was no clear display of pies or sausage rolls—just a small warmer behind the counter. I ordered the mince, cheese, and bacon pie, and my partner went with the curry pie. The service at the counter came off as a bit abrupt, which didn’t improve the mood. We found a clean table outside to sit and eat, but unfortunately the pies were only lukewarm. The mince, cheese, and bacon filling was grey and completely lacking in flavour—very reminiscent of soft, bland hospital or nursing home food. The curry pie was similarly underwhelming, with no real spice or taste to the filling. The pastry was the only redeeming part—crispy and well-made—but not enough to save the meal. Portion sizes were quite small for the price, which felt steep for what we received. Sadly, the experience was disappointing overall and didn’t brighten our morning as we’d hoped. We won’t be rushing back.

Great bakery - definitely worth a visit! Tucked behind the main street in Tanunda is this gem of a bakery serving pies, treats, and bread. I popped in for a quick bite on the way through town and was pleasantly suppressed. Just a simple lunch today, plain pie and some sparkling water, total price at 11:20. Great price for a great meal I took the time to sit in the gazebo across the street and watch the magpies sing for a snack. The staff was super friendly and completed my request for a receipt, even though they had to write it out by hand. This place is definitely worth popping into next time you’re in town, a little quieter than the hustle and bustle of some of the places on the main strip and definitely very tasty.
Rigoniman R — Google review
Apex Bakery was well worth our trip from Canberra. The loveliest staff, most delicious pies and we can’t wait to come back again!
Kate M — Google review
Food was fantastic and old school baking like it should be. We got talking to the shop assistants and told them we were from Victoria. Lovely Amanda showed us the wood fired oven and explained the history as well as the renovation of the oven by an 85 year old Melbourne man. The food, hospitality and friendliness of the staff made this very memorable. Would definitely visit next time we are here.
Hayley L — Google review
Best pies in the Barossa. Chunky steak and mushrooms my pick. Also got a six pack of sausage rolls to put in the freezer for later on.

Apex Bakery – A True Barossa Treasure Stepping into Apex Bakery in the heart of the Barossa Valley is like stepping back in time—in the best possible way. As the oldest bakery in South Australia, it’s brimming with charm, heritage, and the irresistible aroma of fresh bread that’s been baked the traditional way for generations. The wood-fired oven, still used today, gives their bread an unmatched depth of flavor—crusty on the outside, soft and wholesome on the inside. Their pies are simply legendary—rich, hearty, and filled with love. Every bite reminds you of home. What truly makes Apex Bakery special, though, is the people behind it. Corey and his incredible team bring warmth and pride to everything they do. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you’re treated like family. Their passion for preserving tradition while serving up top-quality, honest food is inspiring. If you find yourself in the Barossa Valley, a stop at Apex Bakery is a must. Come for the bread, stay for the history—and leave with a full heart and full hands.

Mum and I stumbled across this bakery by chance whilst strolling around Tanunda this morning and we couldn’t resist having morning tea at this cosy, family run bakery. We’re so good we did! The pasty and custard slice were delicious and we ended up buying more goodies to take home with us

Tanunda Bakery & Cafe is a must-visit spot in Tanunda, Australia. This iconic bakery offers an array of delectable pastries and cakes that are perfect for fueling up during a day of winery hopping. The traditional pasties are large and delicious, while the range of cakes is extensive, making it hard to choose just one. Additionally, the coffee served here is also highly praised by visitors.
Quality bakery with an amazing array for quality goods. Dining inside and out. I had a cheese and bacon roll, delish and hit the spot after a drive over from Adelaide 👌🏻

We were served this ‘fresh chicken’ that looked like scraps and the fatty leftovers. After bringing this to their attention we were asked to pay for a replacement and the manager said “that’s just how it comes” with no apology or any accountability for this disgusting looking ‘chicken’. Absolutely terrible customer service and food quality. Do better
100x G — Google review
Pretzels ARE as good as they say, quite possibly the best pretzel I've eaten. Great range of items, friendly staff and I enjoyed my chunky steak pie and pizza scroll. 5/5 from me but wifey took a point off as didn't quite enjoy her steak and mushroom pie
Brando P — Google review
Well presented and abundant food to choose from in the shop. Unfortunately, I chose the Pepper Steak Pie. When I opened the bag I thought they had given me a “lasagne slice”. It sure didn’t look like a pie 🥧 It was flat and rectangular. Well anyway, the first bite revealed a sloppy gravy filing that had no substance and minimal evidence of steak. Please see my pictures, it’s true!
Stuart B — Google review
We were served what was meant to be ‘fresh chicken,’ but what arrived at our table looked like scraps and fatty leftovers — completely unappetizing and nothing like what was advertised. When we raised this with the staff, instead of an apology or any accountability, we were told “that’s just how it comes” and were asked to pay for a replacement. The quality of both the food and the customer service was extremely disappointing. No effort to resolve the issue or acknowledge our concerns.
Emma P — Google review
Such a busy place with a long line. Service was friendly and there is both indoor and outdoor seating. Unfortunately the pies were sloppy, gravy filled with minimal meat/steak. The steak and mushroom had a few peices of mushroom. The chocolate eclairs weren't great neither.

Here's a sample review: "I recently visited Tanunda Bakery & Cafe and had a wonderful experience! Cloe's warm smile and exceptional service made our visit truly special. The aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air, and the treats we sampled were absolutely divine. From the flaky pastries to the perfectly brewed coffee, everything was top-notch. We can't wait to go back and try more of their delicious offerings! 😊 5/5 stars"
Guri G — Google review
We are a traveling family and this is the best bakery we have come across since leaving home! The apple crumble don't was amazing, the rolls were delicious and fresh and the pizza scroll was great too. Tasty iced coffee and good customer service on a very busy morning. Thanks for starting out next leg of the trip on a good note.

Located across from the Linke family's other establishment, Linkes Bakehouse & Tearooms offers a harmonious blend of Barossa tradition and an upscale marketplace. The bakery section showcases a wide array of generously portioned baked goods synonymous with the region, such as delectably sweet Bienenstich, Deutsche Kuchen, and Honig Kuchen.
The moment you walk-in you can feel welcoming aura…It was very busy inside…. Kudos to Bethany! This young lady has customers interest at bay. She gladly took my order with a smile even at the moment she learned I did not have a table number yet. I walked in and straight to the counter…Thank you again. Love the Lemon Meringue and coffee …

Linke’s Bakehouse & Pantry, a family owned gem in Nuriootpa since 1938, is known for its traditional baking and fresh, house made goods. Offering a delicious selection of breads, pastries, and a hearty breakfast and lunch menu, it’s the perfect stop for great food and Vittoria coffee in a warm setting. The Pantry also features local products and kitchenwares, making it a must-visit in the Barossa Valley. We stopped in for a quick breakfast on our way to Barossa and enjoyed it!
Kav T — Google review
The layout of this unassuming (from outside) is lovely, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. However, the prices are pretty high, and the quality of the food is somewhat disappointing 😞. I had the ham & cheese croissant and would initially have been charged about $13.50 for it - they aren't huge either. When I mentioned my surprise, the young lady explained it would be served open with extra cheese. Still, I can't see how this justifies an additional $4. So she offered me a closed croissant for $9.60. Still a little pricey considering the size. They are snap heated for 45 seconds, which does melt the cheese, but unfortunately makes the croissant soft as if put in a microwave. Next time, I'm happy to try a coffee or hot chocolate, but probably not their food.
Emmy S — Google review
The food here is always very tasty. Today, we went with our energetic kids, which im very conscious of their behaviour and disturbing others. The staff made us feel very welcomed from the moment we entered. It's a very popular place with a clear regular customer base. I was very grateful for the plentiful seating space, I was able to go outside with 2 of our kids to move around with their cars & imagination.
Kimi B — Google review
Had a chicken focaccia it was so fresh and delicious. Lovely staff and lovely little place to sit.
Jeannie D — Google review
Stopped by for some bakery treats. The coffee is good, and the Caesar salad wrap was our favourite. The chicken pesto focaccia and double egg bacon muffin were a bit dry for us, and both the Cornish and spinach & cheese pies were a little soggy. For sweets, we tried the honey roll and kitchen roll — both made with sugar-coated donut-like bread filled with lots of cream, very nice. The vanilla slice had a thick sugar topping and was a bit too sweet. Overall, it’s a very busy shop with friendly staff.

Very nice place to have a light lunch and a yummy coffee ☕️ The bacon and eggs roll was Sooo yummy 😋 and the toasted chicken sandwich was delicious too The staff are happy and friendly 😊

Visitors can indulge in an array of filled wraps, sandwiches, salads, pies, pastries, and sausage rolls. The bakery is known for its amazing Angus pie and tuna pie that tastes like tuna mornay.
We absolutely loved our pies from D&M. Service was brilliant, so helpful as we wanted to buy pies to heat for dinner. Frozen pies purchased with reheating instructions and as photos reveal, delicious and enjoyed by all. We ate the Angastan and the chicken and mushroom. Highly recommend

What a great place to stop for lunch on a rainy day. Sit by the Woodfire and keep nice and warm. Fantastic chai latte and hot chocolate. Delicious lamb focaccia, and lamb wrap. Excellent service from staff and comfortable seating around the lovely fire, definitely my go to place in Barossa when I’m up that way.

Cute little bakery in Angaston… Yummy carrot cake, Nice chai latte, (not too sweet) friendly service

The Angaston pie is the best ive tasted. Well done for using local and quality ingredients also. Nicely run place. We often reccomend it to people. Thanks for doing a good job guys 👍🏻
Luke U — Google review
Just average food absolutely nothing to write home about. The coffee was also weak and lacked any sort of taste (no idea how they achieved this) Partner ordered a sausage roll which was lacklustre as well. What was most disappointing was the presentation; the plates had visible scratches and I don’t understand how they could present their dishes in these worn dishes.
Devang S — Google review
Delicious food! The vanilla slice’s custard was amazing, and the caramel slice decadent with REAL CHOCOLATE on top. The steak pie and veggie tart were also delicious. Looked like a popular haunt for locals - highly recommend for great food at good prices

Sunday breakfast pies, what more could you ask for? Visiting from NSW and drove past here needing a brekkie feed and it did not disappoint! Next time we're back in Angaston, we will absolutely be back to try some of the other delicious pies.

Bakery
Gawler South Bakery is a charming old-school bakery with a cozy and homely atmosphere. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, although the service might be slow during peak hours due to limited staff. The food is highly recommended, especially the steak bacon cheese pies which are made in-house. Customers have enjoyed various items such as pepper potato pie, vanilla slice, capuccino, sausage roll, cheese kransky, meat pie, cornish pasty and great coffee.
The food is that good there are lines out the door. That's why there is one star off the atmosphere. This bakery has been around since I was a little girl and I'm a pensioner now. I was talking to friends at Largs Bay last week and they were coming for a visit just to try the pastries. Gawler Proud is all I can say. Clean, friendly and delicious.⭐⭐⭐

Got served an under cooked kransky it was like eating raw dough.
Greg K — Google review
Been coming in store multiple times and have always enjoyed it, but today annoyed me I ordered on uber eats since I’ve got a new born and they were missing a pie. Bought 5 items including 1 drink, it’s not hard to double check the bags before sending them out disappointing.
J F — Google review
A good store with really nice employees, always visiting for pies on work break but just a little slow.. was the only customer today when it was dead around 2pm and took the girl 15 minutes to get a pie and make a wrap. Didn't seem to have any intentions of picking up the pace a little Would just be better if they could focus a bit more on speed. Didn't want to seem impolite but that's 15 minutes of a 30 minute break gone (I know I make a risk coming on my break anyways) but yeah.. 15 minutes is a little crazy guys especially with only one customer
Summa — Google review
Omg they have the best Sultana Finger Buns in Australia. They were so delicious we ate 3 each with my hubby and we buttered them as well. They are the best.

Staff were polite, but food was just ok. Had a quiche & spinach/onion/cheese roll - quiche was very average but the roll was not bad. My wife and in-laws had meat pies (wife had steak pie) which they were somewhat happy with.

Sunrise Bakery & Cafe Angaston is a delightful spot that every food lover should visit. The service is good! no complaints there But there is no prices on the menu So when I got a med flat white they charged $7 and $7 for a trades pie Which they never did before and I find that to be dishonest So from now on I’ll be getting my coffee from D&M’s
Garry W — Google review
Food was delicious! Service was average & staff quite rude! Lots of space to sit & was clean. Toilets were extremely smelly
Tash H — Google review
We ordered a mince pie, sausage roll, and kransky — and not one was even edible. The pastry was bland and I was chewing Salt. I genuinely couldn’t even swallow a bite without choking it down with water. It’s like this place has declared war on seasoning. How do you mess up a kransky? Avoid at all costs unless you’re on a strict no-flavour diet.

If you're on the hunt for a satisfying Vietnamese roll, look no further than Hewett Country Bakery. This charming spot is known for its hearty pork rolls that are generously filled with succulent meat and flavorful ingredients like pate and mayo. The roast pork roll may lean towards a rich, fatty flavor profile, but that's part of its appeal when you're craving something indulgent.
The best banh mi that I've had in a long time, absolutely delicious and a very generous serving too, the fresh chili adds a nice kick, you certainly get your money's worth here, I ended up buying 2 for myself, as filling as they are, I can't just stop at one!

review no. 22 for 2024 @Hewett Country Bakery, Hewett, SA Steak Pepper Pie $6 Hewett is about 5 mins north of Gawler or apx 15-20 min on foot. Popped into Hewett Country Bakery. Had 4 or 5 varieties of pie, got the Steak Pepper pie, cos who isn't a fan ? lol The pie looked pretty decent. The pastry was slightly dry and flakey. Had an oriental taste to it, could definitely taste the salt in it. The pastry was slightly undercooked on top and below. The mince to gravy ratio was pretty spot on, had a slight gelatinous look. The pepper flavour was there but slightly lacking in punch. I've had some that blow your mouth away. Serving temp was pretty spot on and it didn't fall apart while eating. Small group of shops there, some outdoor seating or a bench wouldn't go astray. It was an average pie, ok for 6 bucks tho. I found out later from a credible source they do the best Vietnamese Meat rolls north of Adelaide 6/1-3 Kingfisher Dr, Hewett SA 5118 #MeatPie #MeatPieAppreciationGroup For more Meat Pie reviews, join my group on Facebook the Meat Pie Appreciation Group

Browns Barossa Donuts is a must-visit for anyone in the area. The team takes pride in creating fresh, delectable donuts from scratch, ensuring that each treat is a work of art. Visitors rave about the classic jam-filled donut, the Nice bun, and the limited edition German Bee Sting. Even those who missed the opening hours were pleasantly surprised by the friendly service and delicious assortment of glazed and cookies and cream donuts.
I came here to pick up some donuts and coffees. Firstly, the two ladies that were around the counter were both so kind and attentive to us when we were ordering. We did order quite a few coffees and they delivered our order perfectly ! I would also like to add that the coffee that they make is delicious and perfect! The donuts were also very yummy. Definitely must visit this place if you are in the area!
Sachita D — Google review
It was my first time visiting Browns Barossa Donuts earlier today, arriving at 11:30 there were only 2 other people in line for donuts and they kept the line moving quickly. We ordered the Biscoff cheesecake and the Mocha Brownie flavoured donuts. The donuts themselves are lovely, soft and light however the biscoff filling was a little disappointing personally. The brownie on the Mocha Brownie donut was incredible though! $7.50 for each donut and not a bad date idea for a Saturday. Not sure I’ll go back again but it was worth the visit.
Anne R — Google review
I heard about Browns Barossa Donuts from a friend in Adelaide, she said they were recently awarded the best donut in SA and they make brioche donuts, so I specifically took a trip out to Tanunda in the Barossa Valley. I couldn't decide which one to have so I purchased a sample box of mini donuts (what a great option to have), I also bought a 6 pack for another friend back in Adelaide. These donuts are delicious, they're not too oily, they are soft and fluffy, and they're literally bursting with delicious filling. I had a chance to chat with Rachel (one of the owners) whilst in the store and you can tell she was completely passionate about what they do, she told me how the donuts are all made in-house including the filling. As an example they sourced the recipe of the raspberry jam from a local award winner and used that as the basis of their jam. It's definitely worth the drive up from Adelaide, and if you were heading into the Barossa anyway then this is a no brainer. Just make sure you check their opening hours as they are open 4 days a week, also they do often sell out (from the lady at the Barossa information center) so don't wait until the end of the day.
Phillip K — Google review
Very crowded. Should use both doors. One for entry and one for exit. Possibly have two people working on coffees when it's a busy Saturday. Filled donut is $7.50 and has lots of filling. They are quite tasty and I think worth the money. Box of 4 mini donuts is $15.
Magda T — Google review
As a donutholic, the donuts from Browns Barossa Donuts are hands down the best around Adelaide. Despite the place being 75km (47 miles) away from where I live, I would make time to come to this spot when I visit the Barossa. A must when you come to Adelaide and the Barossa. Seriously.
Arry T — Google review
It’s a lovely little shop! The donuts are soft, fluffy, the coffee is smooth, and the staff are warm and friendly. There are a bunch of dine-in seats on Saturday noon. Highly recommend!

No visit to the Barossa is complete without stopping by to pick up a few donuts. The difficulty is working out which ones to try.

This was a real surprise, the unassuming shop front hides a hidden gem. As a fan of Germanic produce, I have a high expectation and this place delivered. The family also loved three sauerkraut, a few having for the first time. Well done, we will be back.

I've been here twice for breakfast because of the atmosphere and great food. The staff is also so friendly, definitely recommend stopping by. And the pancakes are so good!!

Older lady served she seemed like she couldn’t be bothered. Like I was putting her out by asking her what pies they have. How dare I?She grabbed the sausage rolls with her hand which I thought was disgusting. If I wasn’t so hungry I would have walked out. Younger girl that was there was very nice and friendly. First time I’ve ever written a review that’s how much of an impression it made on me. I will never go back

Good selection of food in the way of pies, pasties, sausage rolls and cakes with plenty of seating inside and out to enjoy your meal. Wurst Haus? All i could see was a few sticks of Mettwurst hanging above the counter. Where is the rest of the Wurst? Maybe on the menu which i didn't look at. I expected something more on display similar to a continental shop with a range of Wurst.

Great bakery with extensive menu. I enjoyed some delicious homemade Osso Bucco soup with fresh bread. It was very filling and warming on a cold, wet winters day. Would definitely return.

Highly recommend. 10 out of 5 stars here. A favourite bakery of all the Barossa and Light Cab Service staff. Get range of products here. Friendly staff. And a wonderful location right in Tanunda, in the heart of the Barossa.

Went in to this store on a visit only to be treated extremely rudely by an older female staff member. Enquiring about 'home smoked' bacon , i.e. the real deal, not something tasting like cardboard. This person poked her head around from the back room and snapped "Bacon is bacon" without elaborating or asking for a more precise definition. Younger members of staff clearly embarrassed. Their pastries looked delicious, but we didn't stay any longer.
