Mercado Benito Juárez is a bustling covered marketplace in Oaxaca City, offering a wide array of goods and local products. It's known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings, including produce, prepared foods, crafts, textiles, and folkloric fabrics. Adjacent to it is Mercado 20 de Noviembre, where you can find artisanal items like hand-crafted huaraches and elaborately embroidered blouses.
You will find more than you expect inside this market. From clothes, food, pottery, artisan candy, mezcal, and even a pet store. You will find souvenirs for absolutely everyone here. There are two other markets around the same area. A must visit if you are in the area.

I was truly impressed by this market in Oaxaca City! It's a must-visit destination if you're in the area. I found a variety of souvenirs, hair and beauty products, delicious food, and drinks, and even bought new luggage for my trip. Highly recommended
Laurie M — Google review
Love it! If you are looking to buy mole paste to cook at home, this is the place. They also have a ton of artisan products like dresses, belts, and other things.
Denise E — Google review
Eating here is one of the best food experiences in the world! You walk into the meat hall, grab a basket, and choose your meat package based on the number of people in your group. Then they grill it for you while the lady selling salsas and nopales finds you a table. It’s a whole experience — loud, lively, and totally worth it. Be patient; everyone’s shouting, but it’s part of the charm, and you won’t regret eating here. There’s a lot of smoke inside, so consider asking for a table away from the grill area if that bothers you.
Ed C — Google review
It’s okie. A little crowded. There are so much better places to go than this though
Kevin Z — Google review
A crazy bustling market with so much going on. Clearly for locals but we enjoyed the experience as visitors too.

Such a cute bar, our bartender was so fun and kind we were chatting with her the whole time. Lovely highly recommend

A wonderful local Oaxacan market. I purchased some fruit, veg, chicken and beef here. There are lots of stalls and shops that include everything you need at much better prices and quality than the commercial supermarkets. All of the stall owners were friendly and helpful, highly reccomend a visit here. They also have some textiles and souvenirs.

Mezcalite POP! offers a unique experience with its intense and complex flavors, similar to tequila. The small, modern venue serves refreshing mezcal popsicles with fresh fruit flavors, including the intriguing Chamoyada - a fruit ice with salt, chili pepper, and gummy candies. These Oaxacan-inspired treats are perfect for cooling off or as a delightful dessert. The shop also offers spicy ice cream for the adventurous palate.
Best Ice cream shop in downtown!! 🍨Spicy icecream available for adventurous people 👩🏻‍🍳Staff is great 👏Paty chamoy 🐶No 🚗No 💸Ok 📍Great

Refreshing iced snack whilst visiting Oaxaca. The server was friendly and really understanding and able to help us decide what to get even though we had limited Spanish. These treats with Mezcal adw delicious. I recommend taking cash to pay for these.

What a fun, delicious way to get away from the heat. Generous proportions and distinctly Oaxacan flavors. A great dessert to wrap up a meal or cool off.
Carson L — Google review
Mezcal Popsicles are great! This is a very tiny place with a Hip, modern vibe. Fresh fruit favors make the popsicles very refreshing. But I had never heard of a Chamoyada before. . It was a very interesting friut ice with salt, chili pepper and little candies like gummy bears in it. I found my taste buds kept looking for the friut ice and being over powered by the chili and salt. If you are looking for a refreshing treat,go for the popsicles, however if you want a bit of a wild ride into Mexican treats try the Chamoyada.
Grant S — Google review
Delicious fruit popsicles. We got the non alcoholic kind and they were delicious. Definitely recommend.
Susie A — Google review
Delicious spot, and tasty Popsicles. I just wish it was ieasier to tell what all the flavors are, as many are sold out or its just unclear between the menu and what's in the case
Carly — Google review
I just love it!!! If you like Mexican sweets , tamarindo, mango, tajin... you must go!!!
Umeko Y — Google review
A nice, refreshing treat for hot Oaxacan days. They offer flavored ice (nieves) and popsicles (paletas) with mezcal. They have savory and sweet toppings for the flavored ice and a lot of flavor options for the popsicles. It was very refreshing but I think I will stick to the popsicles. The chili and salt flavors of the frozen ice were too strange for me.

Ice cream shop
If you're planning a trip to Oaxaca at the end of June, brace yourself for some steamy weather—perfect for indulging in ice cream! During my stroll back to the hotel, I stumbled upon La Michoacana, a delightful spot that many in Southern California might recognize. While there are various independently owned locations under this name, they all share a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of their Mexican roots.
Great ice cream, popcicles and drinks!

(Translated by Google) In this branch they serve you well and it is clean and tidy. Their products are very delicious from water, ice cream, nachos and popsicles. It has a varied choice of flavor, the grape ice cream with cream is very delicious as is the horchata water. It's a shame they no longer sell their banderillas, which were very tasty.

(Translated by Google) It is a very good product, however, in the specific branch on esq. Emilio Carranza Street and Mexican Air Force Avenue, Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, for months they supposedly "do not have" containers to make the 2L ice cream promotion valid, which calls into question the formality of the establishment.

(Translated by Google) It catches my attention that the prices of this branch are different from those of other branches, and are written with a pen, which is evident that they erased the real prices and adjusted them to their convenience; A clear example of this is the Eskimal palette, in this branch it has two prices, when in other branches it is only one. They don't give a ticket, and that's incredible. Three months ago I bought some palettes and they told me that they did not have a system, this time I went, they also told me that there was no system.

Ice cream shop
Dark Heladería is a charming ice cream shop located in the Jataltaco neighborhood of Oaxaca. The unique feature of this place is its chocolate ice cream infused with charcoal, giving it a pitch-black appearance. Visitors can also enjoy fruity ice creams with delightful toppings. While some customers found the prices a bit high and experienced confusion about the cost, others appreciated the quality and flavors offered.
Super! The ice cream is very tasty and the presentation is 10/10
Yuli S — Google review
Fun and creative presentation, with prices right on point—just 50 pesos for a double scoop. I tried the charcoal ice cream with a second scoop of strawberry, and it was a nice little novelty. Overall fairly tasty. Great location in Barrio Jalatlaco, and contrary to some reviews, there are tables available to sit and enjoy your treat.
Lucas S — Google review
Good ice cream but not worth going out of your way for. It was so frozen that the lady had trouble scooping it out. But on a hot day, it does the job.
Frederik N — Google review
The ice cream was good. However, I gave the girl 70 pesos (the ice cream was 50) so she could give me change - for a tip. The girl took it, quickly said “thank you” in a sarcastic manner, and turned away. Two points: 1) I’m in the process of learning Spanish. It’s difficult but I make a real effort and I did order in Spanish. 2) I always tip. I was going to tip 10 pesos. It was obvious I was taken advantage of because I’m a visitor. I’m here to learn Spanish. It was not cool and made me feel really sad to have gone there. My advice to Dark Heladeria is to have some compassion and ethics.
KD R — Google review
Presentation wins out over quality here. You might expect the black ice cream (which owes its color to activated charcoal) to be intensely flavored, but it’s actually pretty bland—and it stained my lips. The other flavor in my cone, mint, was tasty but nothing special. Cool concept, instagrammable for sure, but not what I was looking for.
Jonathan F — Google review
My partner recently reviewed this business as I ended up in hospital after having an anaphylactic attack from the ice cream. We asked multiple times about the product having nuts as well as stating that I have an allergy. They responded more than once that ice cream contained no nuts. The response to our review from the owner was that we only asked if the ice cream contained nuts and didn’t say that we had an allergy. Otherwise the response would have been different. Which is not only a lie as we did announce I had an allergy and I don’t know why the response would change about the ice cream containing nuts? My allergy doesn’t change the contents of the ice cream? There was literally chunks of almonds. The two ladies were very rude and shrugged their shoulders. I was in a panic as I started swelling up. I asked to use the bathroom as I needed to throw up to prevent the attack progressing too quickly. The lady refused and laughed. I ended up vomiting on the street before quickly racing to hospital. If anyone has this allergy they will understand the seriousness of this advent. It is severely life threatening. The response from the owner in my opinion is poor and careless. Very much the same as the two ladies behind the counter. Please read my partners review and the response of the owner
Samuel T — Google review
I had the double Chocolate Ice cream and because I live in Costa Rica and there is not much great ice cream around that one blew my taste buds. I loved the texture, the chocolate flavour and the little chocolate chips in it. The girls didn't seem so keen to attend to a customer and I think they charged me quite a lot. I paid 40 pesos for one ball and I think I saw after, that two balls cost like 50. The girl at the counter also didn't know and had to ask her coworker and it seemed they made up the price. I don't like to be charged more just because I'm a tourist. But the double chocolate ice cream was really good so I might be going back but the service is meh.
Stephanie W — Google review
Tiny little ice cream spot. The girl who served me was v nice/good vibes. Good flavors, just enough choice. Chocolate with carbon?? Does it taste darker? Who cares! It is delicious and now you are cooler than 5 minutes ago because they put a tiny candy skull on your cone. What more could you want!?

My fave paleteria when visiting Oaxaca. They dont have a vast selection like La Michoacana but overall, Popeye has better quality (important to those of us with sensitive stomachs). Besides, the only thing you need to try is the leche quemada nieve - it’s too die for!

Nestled in the heart of the city, Nieves Manolo, also known as Museo de las Nieves, is a charming ice cream shop that promises a delightful experience for your taste buds. This gem is renowned for its adventurous flavors, such as albahaca (basil) and beso Oaxaqueño (Oaxacan kiss), alongside tropical favorites like maracuyá (passion fruit) and coco (coconut).
Delicious and refreshing nieve. Let us try every flavor, explained each one’s ingredients, and suggested pairings. All of them were amazing! Loved the vainilla y romero. We will be back!

Be prepared to spend at least $100.00mxn for a small ice cream. It’s crazy overpriced. It has to be the location because customer service is just ok, and the ice cream is the same flavor as a ice cream cart man. I would suggest going to explanada basílica de la soledad, a lot more options.
Luis R — Google review
The negative reviews here are totally confusing to me; yes it’s expensive but this place has the most delicious ice cream in Centro. They have a completely different approach to everywhere else: these are creative, unusual flavors (like cacao con chapulines!) with super clean ingredients. The people who work here are friendly. I am from California and my wife is from here in Oaxaca and we both agree this place is fantastic.

Terrible, over 100 mxn for two tiny scoops of sad nieve in a cup. They probably get by because of the few drunk tourists who don't bother looking their prices up beforehand. Prices are not displayed either.

Plaza de Las Nieves is a vibrant and colorful plaza in Oaxaca, known for its variety of traditional ice cream flavors. It offers a less crowded atmosphere compared to other places near the zocalo. Visitors can explore numerous stands offering a wide selection of delicious ice creams and treats. The plaza also features live music, fun decor, and picturesque views of the church and a large tree. One can indulge in unique flavors like Mamey ice cream while enjoying the lively ambiance.
Such a fun plaza to explore and enjoy some traditional oaxaca ice cream!! They had dozens of flavors across 6+ stores, I found Mamey ice cream (my favorite). 40 pesos for a large serving. The Oaxaqueña had great views of the church and a big tree. There was live music and fun decor, bathrooms there too. Check it out as you explore the city!!

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Oaxaca, Nieves El Niagara offers a unique twist on traditional frozen treats. Unlike typical ice cream, these delightful creations are water-based and crafted from natural fruits, resulting in a lighter and less sweet experience that’s refreshingly icy. The owner Angela has perfected this artisan craft, presenting flavors that range from subtly nuanced to boldly delicious. A standout favorite is the leche quemada (burnt milk), which pairs beautifully with other options like tuna (cactus fruit).
Great flavor selections of artisan ice cream. Leche quemada (Burnt milk) flavor is my favorite. Services was friendly, atmosphere was relaxing and settled, absolutely an amazing experience at this place. There are tables and chairs to sit and you get table service.

They call it Nieve (actually Sorbet)... it is not "Ice Cream". My Spanish speaking wife asked the young waitress if they had any Ice Cream or was it just this "Nieve"... She said; "No, but it is just the same". My wife tried to explain the differences but she didn't understand.

In Oaxaca, the city's nieves are a longstanding part of its gastronomy. These dense, creamy ice creams can be challenging to find but are worth the search. The sugary-sweet and icy Oaxaca-style ice creams come in two varieties: nieves de agua with a water base similar to sorbet, and nieves de leche with a bit of milk resembling sherbet.

As you make your way down the stairs towards the street, you'll stumble upon a delightful sweets stall known as Dulcería Regional "El Arte Oaxaqueño." This charming spot is a feast for the eyes with its vibrant array of traditional Oaxacan sweets, each more tempting than the last. Even if you've just indulged in ice cream, it's hard to resist pausing to admire treats like gaznate and pan de mamón.
(Translated by Google) For me they are the best sweets in Oaxaca. The nenguanitos taste excellent here, nowhere else do they prepare them the same. Recommended place 10 out of 10 (the only detail is that the prices have gone up a little, a little unfortunate because I always want to buy everything and the bill ends up being high😂) but it's all worth it, I assure you.

(Translated by Google) Very delicious sweets, the best I would say! Although I imagine that the place that is in the November 20 market is part of them, there the people who serve are always in a bad mood, to see if they want to sell. Everything would be perfect if it weren't for that detail. (Original) Muy ricos dulces, los mejores diría yo!
