The In Flanders Fields Museum, located in Ypres, Belgium, is housed within the town's Cloth Hall and is dedicated to studying the First World War. The museum aims to convey the futility of war through historical exhibits that depict the suffering and impact on both soldiers and civilians during wartime. Named after John McCrae's famous poem, the museum does not glorify war but rather serves as a poignant reminder of its horrors.
One of the most powerful museums I’ve ever visited. The In Flanders Fields Museum is more than just a museum — it’s an emotional and educational experience about World War I. Everything is well-organized, with interactive displays, videos, original objects, and personal stories that really make you feel connected to the past. The building itself, the Cloth Hall, is beautiful and full of history. I also recommend climbing the tower — the view over Ypres is amazing. A place that makes you think, feel, and truly understand the cost of war. A must-visit in Ypres.
Ruben Q — Google review
Definitely worth a visit. Some interactive information. A number of short video presentations, either in English of with subtitles. Displays of WWI uniforms, munitions etc. Cafe and toilets on ground floor. Option to visit the bell tower, quite a number of steps, but even on a dull rainy day worth the visit.
Paul P — Google review
was here on a bus tour from brussels, entrance was included in our tour. -When we arrived our guide gave us poppy wrist bands for entrance, they also activate things. -Typical museum, different displays of uniforms, weapons, artifacts, stories and maps. There is a small theater to hear real stories from nurses during the war -Souvenir and book shop at the end of the tour. -The museum is in the largest building in town, the old town hall, so you cant miss it. -There was also a small flea/garage sale going on right outside of it. People selling random things. There was one or 2 selling war artifacts, not sure it authentic.
Adam C — Google review
One of the main museums, if not the main museum one can visit when retracing the Western Front and the WW1 trail. Located within a splendid building in the centre of Ypres. The museum is immersive with key station points for your audio guide to be activated, a very clever poppy band that also activated key points throughout the museum. Lots of videos of reenactments, great displays and lots of key information that can even make one who may know a lot, to think further. Very accessible and decently priced.
Richard P — Google review
Great museum focusing on WW1 and the surrounding battles. Take advantage of the opportunity to climb to the top of the bell tower during your visit. Allow at least 2 hours for a comprehensive visit. There is also a small cafe and well stocked book shop. Parking is usually available in the public square outside.
Phoenixpooh — Google review
Excellent museum with lots of interactive displays and videos. A brilliant telling of the experiences of the solders and civilians in the Ypres salient during the First World War. Very powerful and moving. All contained in the fabulous building rebuilt after the war.
Tom S — Google review
I visited for two main reasons. First is that my Great Grandfather was a gunner with the RGA in the 3rd Battle of Ypres and not only was it a miracle that he survived but also the diary he kept of his experiences, which is a moving read. After transcribing this a few years ago, I have been researching the contents and the day I visited the museum was part of that and found it so interesting and informative. The layout is quite modern and I liked the use of videos with actors recreating the experiences, especially the medical staff. The other reason I was visiting is that my Great Uncle Charles was killed in 1915 and as he has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the nearby Menin Gate. The impact of his death, and that of his brother who was killed in action only a few weeks later, is still remembered by our family and I was also trying to find out more about his death. For both of these family members, I did manage to find out really useful additional information. Even if you are not like me and researching a specific family member, this is definitely worth visiting and is suitable for younger children with adult supervision. Our teen children found it interesting and we need to ensure the younger generation are aware of the events of 1914-18. There is an entry fee and you can pay extra for an audio tour and visit to the tower. We didn't do the latter two due to time restraints (we managed to get in for last entry time as we had had a busy day of visiting other sites which had to fit in 1 day) We hadn't pre-booked but no issues with that.
Elizabeth B — Google review
The museum itself is excellent – well-presented, with a wealth of information and artefacts that are both informative and engaging. Unfortunately, our overall experience was spoiled by the dishonesty of one employee and the poor handling of the situation by another. My partner and I purchased two inclusive tickets for both museums. It was explained to us that the Flanders ticket granted access to the tower, which is why we chose the full package. However, when we arrived at the Flanders museum, we were told we had to pay extra for the tower. When we challenged this, the employee’s response was hostile. I asked to make a complaint and was told there was no procedure for this and that I should “just do it on Google.” The employee initially refused to involve a supervisor, declined to give their details, and was not wearing a visible name badge. Instead, they repeatedly denied any issue and insisted Google was the only way to complain. Eventually, they contacted the desk where we had purchased our tickets. Unfortunately, that staff member fabricated a story that we had made two separate purchases (we had not) and denied ever saying the tower was included (which she clearly had). After I persisted, a supervisor eventually did attend (despite us previously being told there wasn’t one on site). Once we explained the situation and mentioned that CCTV would support our account, we were quickly granted access to the tower without extra charge. While we were pleased this was eventually resolved, it should never have required such persistence. A museum of this quality deserves front-of-house staff whose professionalism matches the high standard of the exhibits.

Ypres, a town in the Belgian province of West Flanders, is known for its historical significance from World War I. The Ypres Salient battlefields are surrounded by numerous cemeteries, memorials, and war museums that pay tribute to the battles of the past. Despite being heavily damaged during the war, significant buildings like Sint-Maartenskathedraal were meticulously reconstructed.

The cafe's attentive staff ensures a pleasant visit, and guests recommend trying their coffee and mini desserts. The menu includes delectable options such as the cake of the day, which was described as delicious. Families appreciate the kid-friendly offerings like croque Monsieur, while everyone enjoys the spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas.

Attentive staff. Would recommend the coffee and mini desserts, well worth it. Cake of the day was white chocolate and cherry - delicious. Kids wolved down their croque Monsieur. Coffees and hot chocolates came with little biscuit/cake and nougat which was a nice touch.

Food & Drink
Kazematten Brewery is located in Ypres, a city with historical significance that extends beyond its role in the First World War. The brewery is housed in an 18th-century structure that was originally used for ammunition storage during WWI. Despite its modest output of around 750 hectolitres per year, Kazematten Brewery has garnered recognition, winning medals at prestigious beer competitions.
We came here as Cor Meibion Rhosllannerchrugog from Wales as part of a visit to Ypres where we will have the honour to sing at the Menin Gate Service on Tuesday and also are giving a concert in Ypres of this coming Wednesday evening. The Kazematten Brewery gave us a wonderful welcome and tour of their amazing brewery. Thank you to Bert for sharing your story with us. We throughly recommend the brewery tour to people and groups visiting beautiful Ypres.

Great place full of character ! And excellent beer ! It was a real pleasure to listen to the charming story about beer producing in general, during the years, and Kazematten in particular. Baby/kids friendly place . Do not hesitate to visit and enjoy it . Did i say Excellent Beer ,ok ok , i would say that again and again :)

My friend and I visited the brewery yesterday. Rudi and his colleagues are friendly and helpful. Excellent tour and well worth the money. Thanks for a great afternoon. Ian.
Ian M — Google review
Great tour and great beer. The tour guide was very professional and informative, also passionate of the brew process. The only downside is that you can't stay after the tour for too long, because it is only a tasting room and not a "bar". Very recommended though. They have open doors every Saturday, and reservation per email is required. I think it is also possible to book private Tours on other days.
Lucas B — Google review
Actually exceeded all our expectations. An amazing tour back into the history of WW1 and how the new brewery began and flourished. Wonderful please visit only open on a Saturday but a must
Larry S — Google review
Just a few meters from the Menin Gate, many tourists might miss this bar, which is a shame. A combination of style and history, this brewery and cafe bar set in ancient tunnels is the perfect place to reflect on the events which have happened in Ypres, whilst sipping a truly world class beer, their own Wipers Times 14. Comfortable in summer, cosy in winter, the Kazematten is cool all year around.
Kevin P — Google review
Very nice authentic and small-scale brewery, telling the old history of Ypres in a nice beer 'wipers times'. Must see!

Probably my favourite bar in continental Europe. Hard to summarise how nice this place is to have a drink without being there and felt compelled to write a review - music, welcome, atmosphere, beer, genuinely outstanding and you couldn’t hope for better. See you again soon, I hope!

Excellent bar just off the main square, the guy who runs it is very welcoming and the beer is great. The prices are good and being a locals bar you are getting a real slice of Ypres.

The Marktcafé Les Halles is a great place to enjoy a meal in the center of town. The menu features traditional Flemish stews and other hearty dishes, all served with a choice of beers. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, with every right-minded music lover welcome. Delicious food can be enjoyed at the new restaurant connected to the pub, connected by an open-air walkway.
I really enjoyed this place, mostly because of the excellent service. The waiter was very polite and helpful. Even though we didn’t order a lot, we were offered some extra dishes and drinks on the house, which was a very nice surprise. The atmosphere was very pleasant, and it’s clear that many locals like to come here. Another big plus is the fantastic location – it’s right in the city center.

Genuinely such a lovely place. The staff were very friendly and had an English menu for tourists. Their service was wonderful all throughout the night. The food was phenomenal. I enjoyed every bite and it was well worth the money. Came back the next night because I enjoyed it so much!
Ruski 1 — Google review
Popped in for breakfast, but sadly not available but the lady was very helpful & explained that we could buy our croissants & pastries at a local bakery and eat them in Marktcafé and just have hot drinks and soup if we wanted them; so we did. The service was very good & the staff were very friendly. It was also recommended to us by someone whom we met the night before but unfortunately it wasn't open on Monday night, so we missed out. But there's always next year when I think we will visit and hopefully enjoy an evening meal 🍴 😋 when we return. It's right in the town centre, a great spot to sit & people watch. A nice relaxed bar & atmosphere.

Only popped in for a couple of drinks. Friendly staff and atmospheric restaurant / pub. Many people eating and the mussels smelled fantastic. Will definitely eat here next time. We had the Ypra hoppy blond beer, which was superb. Thanks to the team.

De Ruyffelaer is a belgian restaurant located in the town of Ieper. The interior features antique chequerboard floors and old radios, as well as dried flowers and biscuit tins. The traditional local dishes are served here in an adorable location with wood panelling, old floors, and a charming vintage feel.
A lovely small family restaurant. Simple but beautiful family style food served and presented with skill. Very well priced and a lovely night out.
Eva L — Google review
A lovely homely Belgian restaurant with warm service, a charmingly rustic interior and comforting tasty food. Their home brew beer is absolutely amazing (the triple blonde was our favourite) and they sell it too if you want to take some home. We had one of their set menus - of pork pate, rabbit with bacon and prunes and crème brûlée. At 43 EUR this was a decent deal and all the food was delicious. Partner had the venison special. The chef is particularly good at sauces - both mains had a cracking sauce. Recommended when visiting Ypres.
Lucy B — Google review
A wonderful Belgian Dutch restaurant serving local food. We had Cockrell in Berry beer sauce and rabbit in beer and prune sauce the most wonderful mashed potatoes, beef tongue and two lovely bottles of wine. The bill was €200. The restaurant was really quiet so it lacked a bit atmosphere but it was a fantastic place. I hope we just caught it on a quiet night. I would highly recommend it.
James H — Google review
Made a reservation three months in advance of Armistice Day. Needed a gluten free option and confirmed that online. Also needed to confirm a good time for the reservation following the War Remembered Concert that evening. All done from the US. The restaurant was extremely helpful and cooperative. It was easy to find and very cozy. The food was outstanding and the wine exceptional. Our party of four enjoyed everything. The taste was fantastic and the chefs are highly talented. I was looking for a real Belgian meal and experience and we found just that at this restaurant.

This was the best dining experience of our entire 10 day trip to Belgium, Paris and Amsterdam. The atmosphere and decor was cozy, warm and inviting. The service was excellent, we never waited for anything, nor did we feel rushed. And the food was amazing! Everything we ordered was prepared to perfection and was full of flavor. Everyone in our party was in agreement that this was the best meal of our entire trip. This will surely be a highlighted memory from our vacation. Thank you for providing an amazing dining experience!
Jason C — Google review
Beautiful, well cooked food, served with care and attention to detail. We both had a mouthwatering stew, containing a good range of vegetables and plenty of venison. I asked for less cream on my pudding, which was accompanied by the lady of the house when served. She wanted to make sure I was happy with the amount of cream. Someday, all restaurants will be this careful and kind. We will return.

I spotted this restaurant as i wandered away from the tourist area seeking a laundromat. With an interesting menu posted outside, my decision was made to head back there later in the evening for a meal. As it happened, my choice was an excellent one. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. The restaurant had lovely decor and there was a strong sense of it being a family run venue with lots of passion for making sure that all guests enjoyed their meal.

What a gem. The selection of beers is immense and reasonably priced. The food, whilst only bar snacks is really really good. We had the meat and cheese selection, with fries and it soaks up the beer nicely. The staff are very good and friendly. Just the job for either before or after the evening service at the menin gate.

The Old Bill Pub is a favorite among locals, known for its friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect spot to gather with friends for drinks, catch a game, or enjoy some lively conversation. The owner's motto 'If you're drinking, I'm serving' sets the tone for the pub's welcoming ambiance. Visitors can expect a lively atmosphere, games room with pool tables and table football, as well as sports on TV.

Definitely worth a visit. Visited last night for the football. Different sports on each TV and claim they can show any sport going (recently showed hurling). Kindly showed the England v Holland game for us. There's a pool table and beer garden. Good selection of beers. Recently reopened under new management.

One of my only reviews in Ypres without photographs. Visited on a busy Saturday night in early October. On a mild autumnal evening. The bar was really busy, clearly very popular. We ordered our 8 beers and then adjourned to the back room where there were several pool tables and a table football table. A good range of beers, not as extensive as some of the bars that we visited during our short visit to the city and a little tired in places but a good atmosphere with friendly customers & staff. It's open until late into the night but like so many others it's not open on Mondays. As 8 police officers from the UK, serving & retired, it seemed like the logical place to visit, to have a few beers & to relax.

Nora — Google review
I saw the reviews before my food was served and I am so damn thankful that I did because if I went to eat this I would probably end up dead. This is the dryest thing imaginable, the school trip didn't even ask what I wanted and I got chicken and chips. No seasoning. Just dry. Oh also my friends don't like it either. Edit: At like 2am my friend got food poisoning from the veggie burger it was awful would not recommend. I'm also adding pictures before the plates were chipped and there was a hair in my friends gravy. So yeah DO. NOT. GO HERE.
Moss — Google review
Whilst the staff were friendly it cannot excuse the dreadful quality meal issued here. The dining room was cold and without charm - I ate with my coat on. I suspect our tour guide (John Wort) takes a cut for bringing groups here, because there is no reason you would bring someone to the 107th of 107 restaurants in Ypres otherwise. (Source - TripAdvisor). A real downer on our last meal in Belgium.
Ben J — Google review
Came here on a educational trip for a group meal and was quite possibly the worst meal I’ve had in 2023 thus far. The “spaghetti bolognase” may have resulted in the tragic deaths of several Italian Nonnas The vegetarian option was a veggie burger placed upon plain spaghetti - which was so noodle like we wondered if there was a nearby Wagamama’s they’d ordered it from. Entertainingly awful.

I Went here earlier in the evening was great loads of beers to choose from friendly enough. Returned closer to 8 where you get the last stand and suddenly the beer was €3 euros more expensive I questioned him on this and he said I must've done it wrong last time I left it as that then sat down looked at the menu and no he just chose to charge me more.

Despite being slightly off the main square, it's highly recommended for its friendly staff, spacious and comfortable atmosphere, and reasonably priced beer.
It's a little of the main square but it is worth seeking out, the staff are friendly, the bar is spacious and comfortable. The beer is a very reasonable price. As a frequent visitor to Ypres it is refreshing to find a good bar that isn't a tourist trap.

One of the more than 300 hundreds kind of beers bar that make the renown of Belgium. I share with you this rare and delicious bottle of 12 months surmatured Orval. Only a mystic handwriting compared to the standard bottle, but a real plus for the nectar.

Massively disappointed. Came here a couple of years back it was amazing. Massive range of beers service was great. Came back in July 2018 hoping to get the same service. I could not have been more disappointed service was so so was told there were no food and snacks as they’d run out the night before only to see other people get served a few minutes later.

Quiet last Monday when we old Brits went in, but one of the best blond beers I have ever drunk. Good advice from the barman on where to eat, when most are closed on the first evening of the week. The beer was so good that I couldn't read the menu in the restaurant later!! Thank you. ( What was that Watou beer?)

A modern & very popular bar in the city centre, very popular with what appeared to be the younger generation. Not bad prices, good atmosphere & everyone was very friendly. Nothing compared to having a drink in the UK, no one in a hurry to get drunk, everyone chatting and appearing to be very happy and jovial. Most were drinking 25cl glasses of beer, not the larger 33cl size. It was just really nice, no pushing or shoving...made such a pleasant change to some of the yobbish behaviour and excesses back home in the UK. We made some new friends and were given some good advice about where to visit, where to eat plus other good bars. All very good 👍.

Biking Bar is the perfect starting point for a cycling adventure in Ypres/In Flanders Fields, and it's also where Ghent-Wevelgem begins and ends with challenging climbs on Kemmelberg and crossing the Plougstreets. Additionally, it's conveniently located near the cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix and offers a taste of the Tour of Flanders.
Found the Biking Bar just down the street from the Menin Gate. Great little bar with a good range of beers and a cycle shop attached. We were also allowed to bring in our bikes. Some tables outside at the front but the place is like a Tardis as there is an outside at the back. Watched a local cycle races on the TV and sampled some excellent beers.

Ypra Inn - Øl Tankbier is a cozy and friendly spot located right next to the Menin Gate, making it a convenient choice for visitors. Despite its small size, the place exudes a local and authentic vibe, attracting both locals and tourists alike. The beer selection is commendable, with the stout being particularly noteworthy. While food choices are limited, the lasagne is described as incredibly tasty and satisfying after a long day of exploring or attending memorial services.
Nice corner bar with the best view of the menin gate

The perfect location for observing the Menin Gate. A good beer selection and reasonable prices. The Stout was especially good.

Nice pub serving food Belgium beers including the local Ypra.

Shame about the smokers gathered around the tables at the entrance - fills the bar with smoke. Otherwise, a great pub with excellent beers 🍻

It was cold outside. I was hungry and thirsty. I had done a battlefield walk, in snow flurries. I’d walked 7.5 miles by now. The beer was excellent. Limited food choices but the lasagne I had was perfect, exactly what was needed. Incredibly tasty. Full of locals. Right next to the Menin Gate. Highly recommended

What a great, friendly place. Good beer, great location in the centre right next to the Menin Gate. And great cheese toasties! It’s not big, so gets pretty crowded, but it feels local and authentic, despite all the tourists (like us!) The server was on her own at one point and really really busy, but always smiling and helpful. Thanks for a good night.

Stopped for a cider while they set up for the nightly menin gate ceremony. Comfy seats and good service.

Great location for the Last Post ceremony each evening. Was most impressed when staff quietly asked a few "disrespectful idiots" to step off the chairs they were standing on. Good selection of beers - we didn't try any food so can't comment on that. Seating outside, right in front of the Menin gate. Wrap up warm on colder evenings!

Ben's Bar & Grill in Ypres is a must-visit spot, even if it means taking a detour from your original plans. The cozy and friendly atmosphere, along with great beer and amazing food, make it worth the visit. Many travelers find solace in this bar when traveling alone due to the fantastic hosts, Fanny and Patrick. The delicious food is served quickly at reasonable prices, making for an overall amazing experience.
Very good food. The fries(chips) are great. Our group got the bacon burger, the chicken sandwich and wings. They were all hot, juicy and delicious and served quickly. Restrooms were very clean. The staff is friendly and multi-lingual.

Stopped here for a quick snack, ended up stying for the great people. We had great Trappist beer, fries with rosemary salt (we forgot to ask the ratio of salt to rosemary from the owner so we can make it at home in Canada), and wonderful conversation with the owners and guests. They made us feel very welcome and even shared that they had members of their family in Edmonton. Not exactly close to where I live, but it led to some great conversations about the relationship between Belgium and Canada. Great place; wish I could go back now!

Ben’s Bar was quite simply, fantastic. The bartender greeted us, asked us the language we preferred, and immediately began to explain their beer offerings. The food was excellent. We had the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken, a steak and frites and a burger. Everyone was very pleased with their meals. The bartender was very knowledgeable on the beer offerings and we truly enjoyed our time chatting with the staff.

Went there with some friends and everyone agreed it was lovely. Food was absolutely delicious and the drinks were great. Staff were welcoming and great hosts. Felt comfy and the atmosphere was so friendly, the food was served quickly and the prices were good. Overall it was amazing and we can’t recommend enough!!

We stopped in for lunch and the staff were lovely. The service was quick and the food was amazing. The fries were some of the best I’ve had and were perfect. It gets quite busy, so make a reservation or wait, but worth it. They serve lots of different drinks that are refreshing.

A friend and I were planning on stopping in Bruges on a little road trip but had a look at Ypres on Google maps and saw how highly rated this place was, so we made a detour. So glad we did. All of the other reviews say it all — super cosy and friendly bar with great beer and amazing food. I’d put the burger up there with the best I’ve ever had. Hoping to make it back to Ypres again in the future and back to Ben’s.
