Gastropub
Nestled in the charming area of Caversham, Berkshire, the Fox and Hounds Beer House is an inviting retreat for those exploring the scenic Thames or enjoying a day at Christchurch Meadows. This dog-friendly pub welcomes furry companions with open arms, allowing them to lounge alongside their humans in both the bar area and spacious outdoor beer garden. With two south-facing patio gardens that are tented during winter months, guests can enjoy al fresco dining regardless of weather conditions.
Hands down, the best pub in Reading. Excellent range of beers and ciders on offer, just a 10 minute walk from the town centre. Always has very friendly staff, willing to offer samples and tally through their offerings. Incredible pub garden, which gets the sun for a lot of the afternoon. Can't fault it. Will be back many times I'm sure!

Excellent Beer. Rooms? Jaipur is well kept now it’s settled. Staff experience. Varies inevitably according to who served. Bar staff really good. Folks collecting glasses, a bit irritating. Say thank you!
Alan B — Google review
By far the best pub I've ever had the pleasure of calling my local. Fantastic beers all year round for every mood, occasion and weather. Delicious pizza, tasty hot sauce and generous chips. Welcoming staff and friendly regulars. Tremendous value for money. Only negative is how dangerously close to home it is.
Max M — Google review
The. Best. Pub. If you love craft beer, the Fox is incredible. There's always something new to taste here on tap, great food and a very welcoming atmosphere. Surprisingly large outdoor space to enjoy too.
Carys N — Google review
Great selection of real cider and ales. Whilst I didn't have any, the pizza looked good. Nice beer garden present here too.

Hands down the best pub in Reading, the selection of drinks is amazing and the pizza is incredible. The bar staff are always really kind and helpful.

Alto Lounge is a cozy and inviting cafe-bar located in the heart of Church Street, offering a mix of U.S. and European cuisine such as jambalaya and tapas. The venue prides itself on creating a warm and friendly atmosphere, aiming to be a home away from home for its patrons. It's known for its delicious food offerings, including gluten-free options, making it a favorite spot among locals.
A lovely breakfast and coffee. I asked for my egg to be cooked a little longer, which was no trouble and a new perfect egg was brought back. It was a very busy time (midday Saturday) with family groups, Sam was happy to help and not at all fazed by my request. Thank you Sam, thank you The Lounge. 👌🏽
Owen M — Google review
Never been here before and so decided to give it a go. We waited for a table and were given a choice. It's all shabby chic with mismatched tables and chairs which adds to the charm of the place. Music was playing in the background which wasn't too unobtrusive. The menu was huge and covered both sides of an A3 page. We were given the option of ordering via the QR code or at the bar. We went for the latter. I went for the breakfast quesadilla and my wife went for the Miami brunch. Both were excellent and pretty good value. I then ordered cake at the bar. Chocolate & raspberry tote for me and lemon & raspberry drizzle for my better half. Very nice. Venue was full of families and dogs which made it homely. Best part is because you order and pay at the bar you avoid a bill with service charge on it. I like this!
Andrew L — Google review
Just a bit disappointing overall, sadly. We'd been to Correa Lounge on the Isle of Wight which was decent, so hoped for good things here. Firstly, finding a table yourself and then ordering via QR or at the bar is all well and good, but zero interactions with staff just feels a bit disconnected... Secondly, the food was honestly poor. All a bit cold, nothing particularly that flavoursome or made with any care. The Korean Chicken Burger *sounds* amazing but it was a teeny bit of chicken in a massive bun, zero care. Kids meal delivered last, which drives me mad as kids are then getting antsy... We also didn't get the drink or snack with the meal that was said included free. Last thing was ordering a kids ice cream and waiting about 15 minutes, then another 5 minutes after chasing it up. Just all a bit lacking in any care, detail or attention. I dunno, just a shame when there's so many other great food places around. Maybe it was just an off day.
Tippers P — Google review
Alto Lounge is one of my favourite locations to enjoy a good breakfast and a lovely cup of coffee. It's always spot on and the lovely people working here make sure you are always having a good experience. We asked for substitutions, they've done it. We asked for recommendations, they've provided extensive info. They checked on us to make sure everything is top. Can't fault them. Thank you very much for everything you do!
Ionut V — Google review
Very nice meal of Bang bang chicken and a glass of wine. Interesting mismatched chair decor and old pictures. No table service though as order at bar or QRcode, which I didn't realise.
Jo-Anne L — Google review
Brunch here today with friends. Interesting and varied menu, to suit vegetarians and carnivores.. Delicious food, well presented. Good value for money. We will be back. Many thanks
Christine E — Google review
Really nice relaxed eatery with a wide variety of meals including all day breakfast. If you like waiter service though then this place is not for you as you either order through your phone or up at the bar. Andy the chef does a great job of getting the food orders out in a synchronized manner too. Nice bohemian atmosphere with games and crayons for kids also available.

Lovely people with an amazing riverside seating. We had a nice walk along the river Kennet The landlord and landlady were very welcoming and we had a great time!
Mario L — Google review
Absolutely fantastic pub, what they have done in the beer garden is out of this world. I've only been in the area for 1 week & in that time with a few visits it already feels like my local. All the staff are friendly and hardworking. I love it. Shame the rating only goes up to 5 as it deserves a lot more than that.
Sean G — Google review
Extremely friendly pub . Traditional pub as you walk in but the terrace bar is like being on holiday as you will see from the picture, good drinks with a good cocktail machine . Highly recommend this pub
Lee W — Google review
On the plus side it's by the canal, sadly it is a poor pub, very limited drinks selection, not really worth the walk from town.
Matt R — Google review
First time to visit the local pub after covid... Nice place but... It was amazing even if the beer selection wasn't super and the food wasn't amazing! The feeling was amazing! I will come back soon (tomorrow)
Mikael C — Google review
What a turn around the new owners have done for this place. So friendly and helpful and a nice spot for a cold beer on a hot day by the river. It used to be a pub I walked past. Now I can't walk past without going in!

The guy has done a fantastic job pool clean nice. Service is spectacular a fisherman pub. There bookings are fare price. The landlord is all ways thinking about the new things definitely will book again and definitely visit for a pint again. Nestled in the heart of Wokingham, The Roebuck is a charming local pub that has undergone significant improvements since new ownership took over in 2009. Known for its friendly atmosphere, this establishment features a delightful English Mastiff who adds to the welcoming vibe. Guests can enjoy an impressive selection of home-cooked meals and drinks while catching various sports on HD screens.
Thia pub is a quality bar with a good range of drinks, with darts and pool table. In addition on Fridays when there is enough people a quiz is done, Saturday night is karaoke and discount for students on set days. The landlord David has two little dogs that are characters, do not worry about the barking, they always run off. Staff are great and always willing to talk to you. Also there are events through the year which are fun. Thank you David and his team for the great atmosphere and vibe.

What a gem! The wood-fired pizza was crisp and full of smoky flavor. Their homemade gelato was the perfect ending to a delightful meal.
Zoë G — Google review
Very nice, friendly local pub. Full of the locals which created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the language was a bit fruity but nice enough people. They have a pool table in the rear section of the pub which attracts many people. Good selection of drinks and nice toilets with very quirky, short, corridor to get to the ladies! Looking forward to going back again next Wednesday!
Sylvie S — Google review
A real open honest welcome. Not only from the staff but the pubs atmosphere. Absolutely brilliantly decorated ready for Halloween too. Great beer selection too. I will definitely be paying as many revisits as I can. Food next time.

Not a pub you'd easily stumble upon. Attractive decor inside. Comfortable. Lovely landlady. Italian beers on tap (always a good thing). Live music on the evening I visited. Fab stuff.
Lee B — Google review
love the roebuck love the people at the roebuck and love the toy and sweet machines by the pool table with my whole heart
Fi L — Google review
Such a beautiful pub. The landlord was really attentive and friendly. Bonus was the super cute dog running around. Double bells and coke set me back £7, which I thought was expensive. Although I don't go to pubs very often so could be the going rate these days. Certainly worth a visit and I shall be back.
Amy T — Google review
This pub is a hidden gem, had lunch the other day and can not understand why it was so quiet. The food was first rate the beer was super. We were given a warm welcome and great service. Don't tell anyone otherwise it might get to popular and difficult to get into! Definitely one pub I shall keep in my favourites.

The Bull Inn, located in Sonning-on-Thames, Berkshire, is a stylish medieval inn with traditional rooms and free WiFi. This more than 600-year-old establishment offers an upscale pub experience with roaring fires and low beams at the heart of the village. It's known for great food and drinks, making it a quintessentially British pub. Situated in the picturesque village of Sonning on Thames, The Bull Inn provides a fantastic old pub experience in a lovely location by the Thames.
My 1st visit for having a meal here. The Greek Mezze with warm flat bread was fantastic. The stake fillet was tender and beautifully served with potatoes and broccoli with pepper corn sauce. I personally didn't like the taste of pudding with figs, but vanilla ice cream was a perfect thing on the side of it. The staff were so welcoming and attentive. The atmosphere and decorations are nice. I would highly recommend it. I gave 4 stars for location only because there's not much space for parking and it's next to outdoor sitting area for summer time! In general, I would like to thank the staff for the great service and the food.
Elli — Google review
We had a lovely lunch before a circular walk around Sonning. Taking in the river, locks and countryside. Parking is always a challenge in Sonning and there is limited parking by the pub. Beautiful historic location and perfect for a summer Sunday lunch and ramble. Fish and chips were amazing and had a lime and soda to wash it down!
Cate C — Google review
30 yrs since I was last in this beautiful pub . The food back then was of a high quality and I was delighted to find that this hasn't changed at all. My meal was both very tasty and a fairly generous portion .. likewise with my friends meal too . On a very hot day , it was a pleasure to be able to relax in the many shaded areas in the courtyard with a few pints of real ale . All in all .. an excellent pub . 👍👍
Richy B — Google review
The quintessential English country inn. The staff were friendly and the food was good. It felt charmingly independent despite being owned by Fullers. Unlike most pubs, it doesn’t feel the need to play constant music or put on sports. I hope it stays like this.
Christopher H — Google review
Started and finished a six mile circular walk here so decided to have some lunch. Greek Mezze, Halloumi Fries, Sticky Sausages, and Smoked Haddock Croquettes were all delicious. Beautiful pub as well in a lovely, quiet area. Wish it was my local!
Ian N — Google review
Our table was at 1pm, there were 4 of us, our starters, of which there were 3, took an hour and were average. Mains followed more quickly but the server didn’t have the best attitude and missed asking if I wanted an addition to my main course. Overpriced and very little capacity for cars.
Angela B — Google review
A real treat to visit this lovely historic venue. We didn't eat as the restaurant was full and we hadn't booked, but the bar was really well stocked, reasonably priced and the staff excellent.
Yvonne P — Google review
Room was unbearably warm. The bed was too short and very squeaky. Thin walls and windows meant we did not sleep well at all. Otherwise, service was great. Food was...fine. The town is quaint but had a LOT of traffic through it. It's hardly quiet.

Located in the charming village of Sonning on Thames, The Flowing Spring is a historic Grade II* listed timber-framed pub and hotel offering 7 boutique bedrooms. Situated near Reading, Henley-on-Thames, and Maidenhead, this picturesque inn provides a warm welcome and excellent food. The pub prides itself on serving fresh, homemade food including gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options.
Lovely pub, with great owners. Parked my motorhome for free and bought a few pints + pizza, had a lovely time before I went back to the van to sleep. They have so many events on it's great to see, wish it was in my home town. Only one niggly thing - the access road is difficult for a large van, especially to get out, and walking my dog down there was a nightmare as people fly down it - assume it's a bit of a cut through for elsewhere? Not their fault, we will be back.
Sean K — Google review
Took a bit of a trip to try The Flowing Spring as I had read about it and a band I like have played it in the past, I was not disappointed! Excellent choice of food for all tastes and levels, simply fabulous real ale as well as other stuff for those not into that. Fantastic very friendly welcome with a very professional and welcoming attitude from staff

Went there for their regular car meet (second Sunday of each month at 9:30). Great atmosphere loads of cars good bacon rolls.
Martin P — Google review
A pure gem of a country pub, found by chance, loved the name, rude not to go in, sadly missed food, very cosy quirky interior, great drinks on tap, interesting history, have a car meet and bands perform, ample parking, stream runs through, will be back to sample food and watch a band, a must visit
Bexsi — Google review
A unique and quirky pub with an inclusive menu for all dietary requirements. My Shepherdesses Pie was vegan, wholesome & tasty while a classic gammon, eggs & chips and Yorkshire with slow cooked ham hock went down well, all gluten free. The only gringe was the gluten free giant Yorkshire was instead 2 small ones. All washed down with quality Tring brewery ale (not gluten free but there is plenty of gf beer in the fridge). Already looking forward to our next visit!
Richard A — Google review
What a fabulous place! Nothing is too much trouble for the team here. The food is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere is so welcoming. There’s a large garden with a play slide and swings, perfect for families. The owners are fantastic and really make you feel at home. Highly recommend!
Lara F — Google review
This pub is very nice! Great atmosphere! Friendly owner and stuff. The beer is very tasty too. Luckily on my first visit here there was a live american country music with old classic American car show. What a great day! Highly recommended!
A T — Google review
I had high hopes for this place when I saw the menu. The starters were OK, but the chicken curry was pretty dreadful - watery & tasteless. The red wine was off & it took several minutes to get a replacement. The girl serving behind the bar seemed completely out of her depth, like a rabbit caught in headlights. I'm not sure if she was terrified or just unfriendly. On the plus side, the décor & atmosphere were fantastic (it was open mic night). We would return, but not to eat.

Malmaison Reading is a chic and contemporary hotel that beautifully marries modern design with historical charm. Housed in the iconic Great Western Hotel, which dates back to 1844, it stands as the oldest surviving railway hotel globally. Nestled in the heart of Reading, this stylish accommodation offers easy access to local attractions like the Cole Museum of Zoology and Hexagon Theater. Guests can indulge in delightful dining at its brasserie or unwind at the cocktail bar after a day of exploration.
First time for me in an upmarket hotel as my wife booked it for a treat. Was a little confused with the entrance for Great Western House or something, but eventually figured it out. The reception service was great. Room was great. Bath had some amazing pressure and filled up in about 1 minute, never seen anything like that before. Pillow was a bit disappointing and over the night seemed just feel like a tea bag. Breakfast was amazing. Upmarket juice, pastries, granola and full English... wow! And staff were great. Overall it was a really nice experience and I'm glad we stayed there.
Speedy353 — Google review
Rooms are clean despite the age of the hotel. Breakfast was definitely tasty! it even taste better than the cafes outside. Location is just a stone's throw away from Reading, and the best part is you can't hear any noise from the train lines. TVs can mirror screen to phone without any issues.
Jennica K — Google review
Booked this hotel as it was right next to the station and we had a lot of luggage and it did NOT dissapoint. The location is perfect for Reading City Center a 5 minute walk to the shops and directly by the station. The building is beautiful and from walking through the door you feel like you get what you paid that little bit extra for. We were offered a room upgrade for £10 and found ourselves in a gorgeous luxury suite with a huge bathroom full of really thoughtful touches and toiletries. We were exhausted after flying long haul to heathrow and it was so relaxing just to curl up on the sofa with a nice glass of wine in the lovely robe and slippers. There are loads of bars and restaurants right outside and a lovely bar in the hotel. Breakfast is not to be missed. Coffee was great and the buffet spread was exceptional plus the cooked options made to order. We absolutely would stay here again and would recommend. If you get the option of the room upgrade - take it !! The receptionist was also absolutely lovely and super helpful.
Bev S — Google review
Stayed here for one night and first time at a Malmaison and won’t be staying again - standard double bed, bathroom was bigger than the room itself, the shower hadn’t been cleaned properly for probably many months (hard water stuck in the shower head), no bottled water in the room, terrible lighting (if you’re a woman preparing for a night out find somewhere else to do your make up and hair), stains on the bedsheets and generally poor upkeep of the rooms (chipped paint, worn out taps / utensils). Really not worth what they are charging - go somewhere else!!
Kate S — Google review
This is a review for the restaurant, not the hotel. The food I had was decent, although nothing out of the ordinary. I liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. The service was good, maybe trying a little too hard to sell more. I would definitely come back.
Der F — Google review
Excellent hotel. Location is 10/10 just opposite the train station and walking distance to the town centre. Room was beautiful, modern and clean. I loved the little touches they put. I stayed in the "Ghan" on the 4th floor and I highly recommend upgrading to that one. It was gorgeous with a great bathroom. Will definitely stay again the next time I visit Reading. Only note is that some rooms are dim and need a bit more lighting.

Just a quick one night stay. Very clean lovely hotel. Great staff, great facilities and amazing buffet breakfast. We didn't use the gym, but will next time. Pre-booked the parking with q-park (40% discount) so really reasonable and 5 minutes from hotel. Highly recommend the hotel.

It's gone downhill since pre covid times. Rundown rooms that ought to be refreshed, broken and soiled furniture, dust dangling from the ceiling, walls that need repainting, dirty curtains and to top it off appalling reception staff. Yes it might not be their fault but how about refraining from arguing with the client? I don't want to name and shame but goodness I have not been exposed to such disrespect in a long time. They say they have worked in the hotel industry for some time but snapping at clients, slamming the door to the room when issues are pointed out, telling the client they can't repaint the room in the night?! Is this how a hotel of this standing deals with a client?! I was shamed for having found good deals for two nights via an agent ('you get what you pay for') and told by the manager that I could get a full refund for the stay after I'd checked around 9 pm when I'm a couple of weeks from giving birth. I don't need a corporate reply. I should have left the hotel here and there. The morning staff was much friendlier I have to say. The agent proceeded with a full refund for the second night, at the very least Pentahotel Reading was prompt in their response to Hotels.com. Just awful. The lovely and chirpy entrance is deceitful.
Smad M — Google review
Absolutely amazing place. Staff were extremely polite and friendly. The atmosphere was exciting and fun with plenty to entertain yourself with. Room sizes and quality was good and the breakfast was much needed after a night out. Location is great as close to lots.

General: The lobby and bar are modern with fun amenities for guests, service at check in was great and friendly Rooms: disapointed on heading upstairs: the room itself was worn out and noisy. It felt like an old travel lodge or student digs. Despite the comfortable bed and pillows, the noise from the road was so loud I assumed the window had been left open. Room was clean and shower good and hot. Food: only had breakfast which was £12 and pretty good Parking: wasn't available on site, there's a reduced rate around the block Overall - expected something more polished for nearly £200 a night

We stayed with our dog who got a little welcome box with a toy and some treats, the atmosphere is so relaxed, all staff have been lovely throughout. Comfy (big) beds. All games are included for guests so we played some shuffle board (with our dog!!) and had dinner - the food was lovely too! Great selection. Plenty of dog friendly things to do and pubs to go to between Reading and Henley on Thames too - so close to the station you can go anywhere! Thank you :)

We really enjoyed our stay, the receptionists were friendly, we loved the room, nice retro decor and huge bed, the shower flooded a bit but that happens , just put a towel down....The price for one night was very reasonable. Enjoyed a late drink at the very nice bar. I know it's becoming standard but didn't fancy paying £19 each for breakfast. We'd had an excellent Korean dinner up the road for less.

Overall, my experience at this hotel was not a pleasant one. While the design and appearance of the hotel reception were impressive, the room itself was worn out and noisy. Despite the comfortable bed and pillows, the noise from the nearby motorway made it impossible for me to sleep. Even the nice and clean shower could not make up for the lack of sleep I experienced during my night stay. Sadly, I would not return to this hotel due to the discomfort caused by the noise.

Well kept beer, regardless of whether it's local or not. The front room is cosy, with a carpet, fire when weather permits, and a smile to greet you upon arrival. Pool out the back. You'll always get a good pint here.

Lovely pub, great staff who welcome you with open arms. There are not many pubs I feel comfortable walking in on my own, but the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with a great selection of drinks. Love the open fire on a cold day and can't wait for the outside entertainment and bbqs in the summer.

New management have sharpened things up. We spoke to the manager who explained what they had inherited from the previous landlord, what they have done to date and plans for the future. All good. They had a good selection of beers and sitting in the beer garden was very pleasant. We won't be leaving it long to return.

What a lovely pub this is. Its a hidden gem in an already quaint quiet street with a great community spirit. The landlady, staff and clients are so friendly, great company, and they know their beers! Fantastic gin selection too! Love the garden - really quirky, fun and like a home from home.

A lovely stay. Well maintained and comfortable hotel. The room is very well thought through. Everything you could possibly need is provided. Charging docking station by the bed, reading lamps, fridge and retractable washing line over the bath! The heated bathroom mirror and strategically placed lighting is perfect for applying makeup. The bed is very large with good quality bedding. The climate control is effective. Used the main function room for a conference and the meeting rooms for breakout group activities. The catering was very good and the service excellent. Adequate underground parking and conveniently located.

I left premier inn due to an error on the booking. Pay 130 for a room or see if there’s a deal to done online. Best choice I made. Hilton hotel it was !! Little gym does the job I didn’t try the sauna or steam room Deffo one on the cards to try. The room the bed and everything … 5 STARS

My stay at the Hilton Reading was pleasant overall. The hotel is located a bit outside the city centre, which may require some planning for those wanting to explore central Reading. The reception staff were exceptional, providing warm and professional service that made checking in and out a breeze. The rooms were decent, clean, and comfortable, though they didn’t stand out as particularly remarkable. Breakfast offered a standard selection of options, sufficient but not extraordinary. However, the breakfast staff seemed less engaged, which slightly detracted from the experience. Overall, it’s a solid choice for a convenient stay with reliable service.

The property is alright. It is far from center, but easily and quickly reachable by bus. Fridge was not working , but got it fixed quickly thanks to the front desk staff. Breakfast was always a great start of the day. Nice setting and the breakfast team is awesome. Especially the blonde gent with the sailor shirt went above and beyond every time even risking life trying to retrieve stuck toast! :) So much looking forward to coming back.

Nestled in the heart of Reading, The Nag's Head is a beloved local pub that perfectly blends traditional charm with a modern craft beer experience. With an impressive array of hand-pumped ales and ciders, this cozy establishment offers a vibrant atmosphere that's ideal for both winter gatherings indoors and summer relaxation in its inviting beer garden. Patrons rave about the knowledgeable bartenders who are eager to guide you through their diverse selection, ensuring you find the perfect drink to suit your taste.
Have been visited many pubs in Reading and found this one of the best pubs in Reading. Great service, good and friendly staff, Cosy atmosphere and has an amazing beer garden. Love the variety of beer they are serving. Plenty of cask pumps and many more of keg taps and all beers were in excellent condition. The prices were amazingly down mean pocket friendly and surprised me compared to places around. Defo coming back again and surely recommend to all beer lovers.

A pub that delivers on both food and drink; hearty fare and a wide array of ciders and ales. The sausage roll and the beef brisket bun are really tasty. Evenings on the patio are comfortable and full of atmosphere.

Berkshire’s favourite pub! Super friendly atmosphere, hundreds of ales beers whiskeys etc to choose from. A true real ale pub. If you’ve never been, put it at the top of your list of pubs to visit in Berkshire. It’s dog friendly and they have a huge garden. Also some tasty bar snacks. Brisket sandwich for the win.

One of the nicest hotels I’ve stayed in for some time. The kindness and helpfulness of the staff is one of the outstanding qualities of his hotel. The breakfast is on par with most Michelin star restaurants. We stayed in a suite in the House Building. Quality of the furnishings, the style and the cleanliness were exceptional. . Everything was chic but luxurious . I am now looking for reasons to return to Reading so I can stay here again .

The hotel is lovely, over the road from forbury garden, which is pretty, and only a 10 minute stroll from the mainline traim station! The whole hotel is beautiful but the best part of stay was the restaurant, the food was so good, everything we had was tasty and fresh. That's plenty to ask for but then the restaurant staff take it up another notch, they gave us an outstanding level of customer service, attentive, professional and friendly. We thoroughly recommend trying the restaurant out, at the Roseatte. If you haven't been already you're missing out :)

The Asian looking Receptionist was very lovely person and very professional. Felt very welcoming. But the public are, lobby , downstairs toilet really need a good scrubbing . Very dirty. Room is tired as expected but clean. Only problem was when the weather is hot, it’s like a steaming here. They only provide a loud noisy industrial fan which you can’t use while sleep. Need some new quiet fan! Bed is hard. Lots amenities including nice slippers. Big bathroom shower very powerful. Location is excellent next to the park and everything.

Highly recommend. We stayed in the “House”, which is the newer section of the hotel - the rooms were beautifully styled, spacious and comfortable. Great location, close to the city centre and train station. The Reading Room is also worth a visit, especially for the afternoon tea!

Stayed here for business and was put in a room at the back in a separate building.. The room was large and bright but a little tired looking. The cupboards are not a great design as no handles so near on impossible to open, especially if they are a little stiff. Was a little noisy first thing as there were roadworks outside but the reception and bar staff were brilliant and very welcoming. I booked through a saver website to get a good deal as going direct was much more expensive!

Heads up: Last year, I attended a Christmas party with my friends. To be honest, I have to say the food was okay, but the atmosphere was really boring. They held the Christmas parties in the restaurant, and everything felt awkward and distant. You could not really interact with other people because there were pillars and walls in the middle. It did not have a party vibe. And to top it off, the DJ had difficulties setting up or playing music. We, of course, left the party well before the closing time.

The Castle Tap is a relaxed bar that offers a wide variety of beers, including real ales and craft beers. They also have an extensive selection of bottled and canned beers. The pub provides a friendly atmosphere for both real ale enthusiasts and craft beer lovers. They host live music events, Shanty sessions, Open Mic nights, as well as community events and social clubs. The pub is dog-friendly and even has two resident dogs that are often seen roaming around.
If you like an old style but alternative venue, then this is a perfect pub. Customers of all ages and interests. Good variety of drinks. Didn't eat but they do good food. There is the main bar at front and room at back plus a big open seating area. Pub has a lot of bands booked to play over next 3 months. Parking is restricted, tight but you may want to walk. Good find.

Towering pillar of local community and culture. "We met in the tap" is how I describe a solid 50% of my friends since moving to Reading. If you're queer, neurospicy, into locally brewed beer, a bit of a nerd, a lover of alternative culture, or a combination of the above? You can walk into a ready-made crowd of folks that would love to meet you just by, like, turning up when there's an event on.

The epitome of craft beer pub. All thr elements of a neighbourhood pub with the added elements of a modern craft beer selection. The staff live what they do; they have live music; and there are retro gaming and game of thrones nights. Very cool spot to chill with a proper pint.

Is there such a thing as the perfect pub? The Castle Tap is pretty close... A proper friendly old school community pub near the Bath Road, high ceilings & mismatched armchairs/sofas, dartboards and music. Great selection of beers and a laid back feel, with good bands and arts events some weeks.

Gastropub
The Swan in Shooters Hill, Pangbourne, Berkshire is a beautiful Gastropub that overlooks the River Thames. It's not cheap, but if you want to sit outside and watch the river go by then this spot is hard to beat. In summer the decking area is usually heaving with punters who want to enjoy a cold drink, some tasty pub food and a stunning view.
We came upon this place by accident whilst heading out for Sunday lunch. We got a spot in the car park and got ourselves a seat in the bar. Lovely staff served us a beautiful roast dinner and drinks. Tasted great, clean place and lovely atmosphere. Would go back and would recommend
Anthony A — Google review
I visited The Swan for a Sunday roast and it was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. The roast was spot on – tender, flavourful meat, perfectly crispy yet fluffy roast potatoes, fresh veg cooked just right, and rich, tasty gravy that tied everything together beautifully. The customer service was just as impressive. Every member of staff was friendly, attentive, and welcoming from the moment we arrived. Drinks were topped up promptly, and they struck the perfect balance between checking in and letting us enjoy our meal. The Swan has nailed both food and atmosphere – a cosy, inviting pub with top-quality roasts. I’ll definitely be back and recommending it to friends.
Cara M — Google review
The Swan is a proper village pub with great food, fair prices, and a welcoming atmosphere. The Sunday roast is excellent – tender meat, loads of fresh veg, crispy roast potatoes, and proper gravy, all at really reasonable prices. Breakfast is just as hearty and sets you up for the day. The pub has a lovely garden for sunny days, perfect for a pint or a meal outside, and they often have live music which gives it a great buzz without losing that relaxed, local feel. It’s dog-friendly too, so you can bring your four-legged friends along. Staff are friendly and down-to-earth, and it’s the kind of place where you feel at home straight away. A real community spot and well worth a visit.

Me and the family popped in for Sunday lunch and so glad we did. We immediately felt at ease with the warm welcome and friendly staff. Wouldn't hesitate to come back and recommend you to everyone I know.

Wasn’t expecting such a random spot to be so amazing! I had my favourite go-to meal, the chicken burger, and it was divine! Our waiter, Noah kindly led us to this review page, and I ought to give credit to his excellent and very charming service too! Overall lovely spot. 💕
Isadora S — Google review
My closest pub. So popped down for an evening drink in the sun in the beer garden. We planned on having a chilled bottle of the House white. Out of stock , so we had to pay £24.50 instead of £16 !! How hard is it to monitor stock levels ? The barmaid was apologetic enough. It would have been a nice gesture to get the next bottle up for a discount or even for the same price. Also didn't like the massive dog roaming free off the lead in the beer garden/car park area. Dogs this size do frighten some grown ups, never mind small children. So on this occasion, only 3 Stars.

We were in town for a weekend football tournament and had our booking at another restaurant cancelled. After a quick Google search & a pleading phone call to the Swan, they accepted our last minute reservation for 18 people including children & were the most wonderful hosts. The food, drinks and overall hospitality was 10/10 and we would all highly recommend! The staff were some of the most friendly and welcoming people you could meet, and if we lived closer we would make visiting here a regular occurrence. From all the Staff at Tyrone Mings Academy, Thank you to everyone at the Swan, you made our evening!

After an extensive renovation, the former Brakspear Prince of Wales pub transformed into the Last Crumb in 2019 under the management of Dodo Pub Co. This establishment offers a selection of regular beers from Arkells and real cider from the Cotswold Cider Co. Additionally, they often feature a guest ale from Loddon Brewery. The transformation is remarkable, turning it into an inviting and delightful place to enjoy an evening drink.
WOW, what an improvement! Since reopening it has become a jolly nice place to come for a drink of an eve. It is bright, crisp and clean and look forward to when the restaurant side opens! Tilehurst has needed a pub like this for years!

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Very rude and unpleasant woman approached me right after parking ordering me to move my car as soon as I parked, when my husband was about to go in for a drink - he hasn’t even had a chance to get out of the car when she ordered us to leave. Proceeding to threaten us with a parking fine when she wrongly assumed we weren’t going in, even after I said we were going in! What a joke of a pub. Clearly, we took our business elsewhere & will avoid like the plague. Don’t waste your time.
Salisa B — Google review
We have been regular patrons for 3 years and have always enjoyed the pub. Of late though, we have had some poor experiences that have been related mostly to the landlady. She is unfriendly and hostile. Our humble apologies for irritating you by coming there. We will rather spend our £ where we are welcome.
Gareth T — Google review
Awful atmosphere...awful service...unpleasant staff....customers smoking right by the door so you have to walk through the smoke. Not going to come here again. What a shame
Kate W — Google review
Was there on a Tuesday afternoon. It is a big pub with lots of tables. The pub had only a few customers sitting indoors. Mostly they were talking loudly, using the F word about twice or more in every sentance and at times the level of shouting was frightening. The only person in charge was a barmaid who seemed to be doubling as a cleaner.
Colin W — Google review
as soon as me and my friends walked in was straight away asked for ids not even welcomed or asked if we’re okay. showed ids and then was about to walk to a table to sit down and decide what we wanted to drink. was rudely told by the ginger young staff lady there that we need to buy a drink to stay. which i thought was obvious? we said yes we’re just going to sit down for a couple minutes. she said are you actually going to buy one though? even tho we just said we were?😂 not even 2 mins later we went and got two drinks. we stayed for about an hour and played a couple games of pool. i was stood between the high top table and the pool table with a drink half filled next too me. once again the young ginger lady came over and was telling us we need to by a drink to stay there and that we can’t just stay here all night . she said we can finish our game then we have to leave? but wasn’t saying this to anyone else. not to mention i hadn’t even finished my first drink😂 very rude and so much attitude for no reason. was overall not nice from the second we walked in until we left.

Bought 4 x Peri peri chicken rice and salad tonight as The Village Take away was closed , Thought we would try Hungry Birds next door . The chicken was just plain chicken not marinated at all then the server just poured hot peri peri sauce all over , As you can see from the photos the sauce was so much it couldn’t be ate , so hot too . It smothered coleslaw salad and rice . The rice was over cooked so much it was like spludge and looked like mash potato . It should have been chucked in the bin and not served on 4 dinners …. So so Disappointed will never go back again !

I ordered two Chicken tikka combo meals and a portion of chicken wings for my son for our lunch. I ended up with badly overcooked, black burnt chicken wings and two portions of cold, rock hard chips that seemed like they had been left out all day. After picking the burnt bits off the chicken wings in an attempt to make them appear to look less burnt, I tasted one and it tasted burnt. I couldnt give these to my son. I had no choice but to dispose of them. They also had a burnt smell to them aswell. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. I will not be ordering from them again!! Terrible food that should not have left the restaurant in the first place. After complaining via deliveroo i managed to recoop a third of the costs i paid, but still a lunch meal ruined for our family. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!!

Ordered fried chicken and a lamb and peri chicken kebab. Fried chicken was dry and most of it didn't taste fresh. The kebab had bones in it that I almost choked on. Lamb was dry and spicy heat wise, which is definitely very strange considering it was spicier than the peri chicken. Won't be ordering again!

Good local pub, hope the latest people stay long enough to get it back to its former self! Update: terrible choice of beers now, nothing local at all! No hot drinks if you're not drinking. Football on the telly even if no one's watching it, shame because it could be a nice local boozer.

Love the people and the friendly staff. Won’t go there again though while the current manager is there. Was appalled to witness yesterday a vicious verbal attack on a long standing loyal elderly customer by the manager in front of everyone. The customer is mid 80s is frail and in my experience extremely polite and courteous and I was not aware of anything he might have done or said to provoke such an appalling attack on him. Five stars for the staff and patrons minus five for the manager

Breakfast restaurant
Bill's Reading Restaurant is a European chain that offers separate menus for breakfast, afternoon tea, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant has expanded from its humble beginnings in Lewes to become a nine-location chain. It retains some of its original charm with an allotment chic vibe while also offering products for purchase like cordials, oils, and tinned olives stacked on nearby shelves.
Beautiful place with delicious food, I can not express enough how much I recommend to visit. The service, the atmosphere, the food 10/10. The portions are massive, I've decided to go for pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. It was one of the best pancakes I've had. My partner decided to go for sourdough with eggs and salad, which he said was delicious. We also got some chorizo, which i absolutely loved. The tea was served in adorable tea cups, which fit the whole design of the place. They do have separate menu for the 2 and 3 courses and serve slighly different dishes depending on breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you're a fan of pancakes, they also offer bottomless pancakes between certain hours. I've attached all the pictures of the menu and details down below. There is plenty of parking at the oracle shopping centre which is a walking distance from the restaurant. If you're visiting Reading, this is a must go.

The food is phenomenal! We came here for brunch and it was so good. We are definitely coming back. They have tons of vegan options and are super helpful with food allergies. The vegan pancakes are a hit. The service was super friendly, even though they were super busy when we came. Luckily we had a reservation so there was no wait when we showed up.

I had a great time here :) The food and drinks were tasty, especially crispy calamaris. The atmosphere was perfect for a chill night. Tillie and the rest of the team were lovely! I also loved the idea of limited-time menus—Hawaiian burger.

All together we had a great dinner family time. We ordered a starter and 2 juicy burgers for us adults and kids eat free during school holidays which is kind and nice from the restaurant, especially for families with kids. Even if one of the burgers was not the way it was meant to be, the branch manager apologised and kindly replaced it for my wife and did not even charged for her entire order, including the drink. That was both polite and going above and beyond, as this can be a point of deciding if you ever come back to a restaurant based on your experience, and it all falls on the way the staff (including management) approach the issue and find a swift solution. Reason why we scored 5 stars and we thank Tillie for finding us a table last minute even if we had no booking on a Friday night.

The experience was extremely pleasant we enjoyed our time at Bills celebrating our anniversary. The food was amazing from the starters to desserts. Our waiter Ansh was so friendly and he made sure he always checked on us. His service made the experience even more wonderful.

The restaurant has a very pleasant atmosphere and polite, friendly staff — definitely a strong point. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to expectations. We ordered the chicken schnitzel and the fish pie. The schnitzel was well cooked but completely lacked salt or seasoning, making it quite bland. The fish pie, according to the description, includes two types of fish and prawns. The fish was fine, but there were only two prawns in the entire dish, and both were severely overcooked — tough and dry. The pie itself was also completely bland, with no salt or noticeable seasoning. Hopefully, more attention will be given to the flavor of the dishes in the future, because the service and atmosphere are genuinely very good.

The Cunning Man is a charming pub located in the quiet corner of Burghfield, offering classic pub menu items and real ales in a picturesque setting. The thatched inn features exposed-brickwork, beams, and open fires, creating a cozy atmosphere for visitors to enjoy traditional pub grub. The establishment's extensive beer garden is popular during sunny summer days, while the interior provides a warm escape during inclement weather.
We had a lovely visit to this restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The seabass was fresh and delicious, and the Sunday roast was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The setting is absolutely beautiful – a charming building with a stunning garden in a peaceful location by the river. The atmosphere was very relaxing, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout our visit. It’s also a dog-friendly place, which we really appreciated. Free parking is another great bonus. Highly recommended for a relaxing meal in a lovely setting!

The food was great, very tasty! The pub has a nice atmosphere, and we enjoyed the vibe. However, as a large group, we requested separate tabs but were told we could divide the bill at the end, which turned into quite a mess. Some bundled courses were mixed up, and splitting the bill as planned wasn’t possible. A better payment system for larger groups would be appreciated. On a positive note, the pub is pet-friendly and has a huge garden, making it a spot we’d definitely return to in better weather.

Lovely place, yummy food, great service... Their dishes are really good and service was fast. I had the cajun frites AMD chorizo sausage, both are starters but why not. My friends had apple crumble and they told me it's fantastic

First time going and all I will say is we are definitely going back! Food was really good and came out without having to wait too long despite them being very busy. Starters were great and I forgot to take more photos. Burger was fantastic and to be honest where it is situated is the real win. Right on the river and nice inside and out.

Lovely place, slow service host wasn't present and waited over 30 minutes for food order which was very basic. Overcooked chicken and very ungenerous on the prawn starter with only 3 prawns! Not a great experience unfortunately, the dog was very happy all the same.

Fantastic atmosphere. The pub is located by the riverside making it very peaceful and relaxing. Service and staff are great! The food was good and so were the portions. Prices are fairly average.

Had a lovely Sunday dinner with family here on Sunday 20th July. We were served by Ceri who was brilliant! It's nice to feel like your server cares you are there. Nothing was too much trouble & Ceri was very professional and personable. She noticed a delay in our coffees and had them out to us super quick, remembering everyone's order! We're always returning customers so look forward to the next visit!

First time visiting the cunning man and the welcome from Helen behind the bar was second to none. Very friendly and told me about the up and coming events. Also said I could order food to take away which saved me looking for a delivery takeaway as I’m not from the area. Guinness was spot on even came with a shamrock ☘️ Will deffo be coming back 👍

Hope & Bear is a charming and stylish traditional pub located on London Road, just a 15-minute walk from Campus. It offers an inviting atmosphere with its well-tended garden and traditional interior. The venue provides an airy and spacious restaurant while maintaining the intimacy of a classic pub. With an open fire during winter and two immaculate beer gardens, it caters to guests year-round. The adventurous pub menu features classics like fish and chips, burgers, steak, and a delicious Sunday roast.
A fantastic pub that hits all the marks - great decor, brilliant range of delicious food and drink and really fantastic service. There's not a lot of places these days where the staff genuinely care, and are all so friendly. Can't recommend Hope & Bear enough!
Alice H — Google review
It's not bad, but it's VERY student orientated. The beer selection is pretty good the food is pretty good. However if you walk to the bar at the same time as 15 students walk in the staff will always serve the 15 first. This is frustrating as the 15 don't even know what they want to drink. I understand that they cater for the students and that they are a big part of their revenue but surely staff maintaining and managing orders in turn should be a thing? A lot of these big groups only stay for 1 drink then go on to the next pub. In short you won't get served in turn if a big bunch of students turn up. This means you'll wait a long time because (fair play) they ID each and every one. Also an annoying habit they have is charging you on card before you get your drink. On multiple occasions the beer they then pour runs out and I have to make a different choice resulting in a refund needed on my card and a new amount charged. As with all card transactions the money coming back is delayed but the money going out is instant. I understand that they don't want to pour until they know the person has the money to pay for it, but this really sucks. In short. Nice pub, good garden, good beer, staff are nice but not attentive to who is next, food is good if a bit pricey for what it is.

Left feeling horrible and regretting coming - Had a group booking as we were visiting Reading for the weekend, I decided to ignore some reviews about a bad experience about service and sadly I was met with the same bad service from one bartender. As I walked in I asked if he minded if we sat outside and he told me he would rather we didn't as it meant they had to bring food out and he stared me down leaving me feeling very belittled for wanting to sit outside. He made me feel like it was the most inconvenient thing and that it bothered him a lot even for a simple ask while others say outside. I decided not to deal with him any more and let my husband do the ordering. He then did not bring our food out and we sat waiting while the rest of my party finished their food. He approached us and said he had no evidence of our order despite my husband having his email of order and having paid over £100 and having waited patiently for our food. He then raised his voice at us and my husband decided to go in to get our food which had been sitting under heat for about 20/30 mins. I wish this was the end. As my brother went in to order the same guy was sitting on a gambling/gaming machine and ignored him. I am not the person to review this type of experience and I generally accept that some people have bad days and may be rude but this goes beyond okay as from the second I walked in I was half afraid to meet him again. The only redeeming thing was the food and other bartenders who apologize for this guy. So thank you to the chef and those who have to work with the other employee The person in question had tattoos and dark black hair. I can see reviews about him already and would have management seriously consider his employment as I will not be returning and will not be recommending the place to anyone.

The Hope and Bear is the local of my dreams. Great drinks with a massive range, especially their Gin. The food has always been incredible, their lunches are well priced and their evening meals and roasts are good value for money as the standards they are serving at go above and beyond. There is parking too if that's an issue and it has great bus links. I would highly recommend coming here.
Jack J — Google review
Decent food, can't say the same about the service. One bartender somehow blamed us for the food not arriving for 40 mins, refusing to take responsibility. Then we go into the bar and all of our meals are just sitting there on the counter ready to go. This guy has been mentioned in other reviews, I'm sure the owners know who I'm talking about. Sadly very poor service means we won't be returning anytime soon.

Focusing on delicious food and bottomless booze, The Three Tuns is a must-visit pub in the city. Offering great value for money, their brunch is a popular choice with locals and visitors alike. Enjoy your meals here while enjoying good company and excellent service.
We broke off a walk round the area for lunch here. The large outdoor seating area at the front is a little near the busy Wokingham Road, but the area at the side, accessible through the pub, is a quieter. The two beer on offer are pretty standard and of average quality. But the small plates selection is great. At £6.99 each it's not bad, but the offers available for three or six becomes exceptional value, and really good quality. I have to make an exception of the scampi, which were proceeded and reshaped. The rest were generous in size and enjoyable to eat. Between the three of us, we opted for a doggy bag / box to finish at our leisure.

I came here for supper on my way to astronomy society. The food was excellent, but my main course took more than 40 minutes to arrive, when I was concerned about getting to astronomy society in time for this month’s lecture. I also had to get up to order, which is fine for me as I am perfectly mobile, but I know quite a few people who would have difficulty there because they are very immobile. They also need to publish the dessert menu on their website and leave it at every table, which they currently do not.

It was a nice pub, was clean inside, and the atmosphere was vibrant. The food looked nice, and presentable, and tasted very nice. I had the BBQ pulled pork it was lovely. Wasn't happy and asked the bar staff if the boxing was on they said it was Just Vs Danike Dunois fight. Said be back later to watch it went back later that night after lunch wasn't on different bar staff. I wasn't happy and came back especially from Reading town centre to an empty pub with no boxing.!!!!

I had lunch in the Three Tuns today. First time I've been there in a number of years due to a previous bad experience. We ordered tea and some lunch. The tea was served in very small coffee cups and we were given 2 small pots of tea for 3 people. We had to go back to the counter for milk. When I asked the waitress for tea cups I was told they didn't have any other cups. One of the cups had dried on ?food at the bottom of it. The tea pot also had brown staining to the outside of it. The waitress seemed friendly and helpful. The food was a very generous portion and fresh and tasty.

As a company we come here often for lunches and have always found everything fantastic. The staff friendly, the food really good and the service really prompt and attentive. We've been to a few different pubs in past years and I think it's telling that we've happily settled on the Three Tuns as our favourite spot!

Food is delicious, best pub food, really gemourous portions for the price. Quite a big selection. Will definitely be visiting here again and really recommend it. The fact it was wheelchair accessible , for parking getting into building and disabled toilets adds to the experience. Spacious well decorated very clea and tidy. We had the Ham egg chips and salad. Cooked too perfection, as you can see from the photo, the eggs great for dipping chips In. One of us also had the waffle, which was equally lovely. unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to grab a photo of that as it was eaten with such enthusiasm 🤣🤣 Great job to staff. Thanks for the experience and excellent service.

Fish & Chips is my go to test for a pub lunch, £16 A reasonable portion of fish. Soggy batter though; oil came out when pressed with a fork. The batter was a very odd bright yellow colour. Taste was a little bland. Very good chunky chips.

My boyfriend and I came here to watch the Champions League final and to have a few drinks. The atmosphere was really nice and we had a great evening. The best part about this bar and our evening, however, was the barmaid. Phoebe is not only very quick but still conscientious in what she does, but also the nicest and friendliest bartender I have ever met. We will definitely be back!😊

The Alehouse in Reading offers a classic and authentic atmosphere with its bare boards, alcove booths, and a wide selection of ales. This cozy joint is perfect for beer enthusiasts as it hosts occasional beer festivals and boasts an impressive range of draught and bottled beers. Located on Broad Street, the pub welcomes dogs and provides water bowls for them. It's known for its traditional English pub vibe where both staff and clients are friendly, making it easy to strike up conversations with fellow patrons.
It's a Classic British pub, staff are friendly and inviting, there's a wide selection of beers. The listed building is small so if it's busy seating may become scarce but its charm means you should still give it a try anyway.

Real atmosphere, friendly staff and regulars, and excellent choice of real ales and ciders. Chess is played here. Also real variety of festival pint glasses.
James — Google review
Unfortunately I had a horrible experience here where I felt very patronised over a drink which they sell. I wanted to show my friend from south Africa an ale house with history but the man we were greeted with made us walk out straight away. I was extremely polite and asked for a double rum and coke to be told he doesn't do rum and I said well I was served it the other night to which he replied well I am the owner and i would know, and we dont. I literally don't understand what you got out of being so rude to two young women in a pub full of older sneering men. It made us both very uncomfortable and we won't be returning. Ladies, be careful!
Amy B — Google review
Great selection of ales, well some of the, err more creative ones can be a bit hit or mis. But you'll never know until you try them. For me, that's half the fun, and sometimes you will find an absolute blinder (in both interpretations of the word) it's a very chill place and great outside in the sun.

This place for legends. Not for faint hatred. The last time I was there, the count of different kind of Ales served till date was 10K+. People have permanent beer mugs here. If I could, I would prefer go here for most of the time and would have a beer mug on my name too.

The establishment offers a relaxed and professional atmosphere with friendly and courteous staff. Guests can enjoy the lovely terrace adorned with decorated pergolas, a colorful shepherd's hut bar, and eight heated dining pods.
I had a great experience at this restaurant! The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing, and everything felt clean and well-maintained. The food was delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and served in a timely manner. The staff overall were friendly and attentive, but a special thanks goes to Lana, who made our visit even more enjoyable. She was warm, professional, and gave us excellent recommendations from the menu. I’ll definitely be back and would happily recommend this place to others!

During a visit for dinner, my partner enjoyed the food and service so much, he decided to book a table to celebrate his big birthday. We booked our party of 12 for mid-afternoon during which we were really well looked after by our server, Chante. She was brilliant and with the help of the team, made sure we had an enjoyable celebration. The food was excellent - those who had steak said they were perfectly cooked. Thanks team for making our visit to The Rising Sun a memorable one.

Beautiful cozy and relaxing place. The layout looks very welcoming with lots of spaces and an approaching service. Food is nicely presented and tastes great however we had an issue with the chicken dish that was corrected immediately (even though it has been explained that the chicken is slowly cooked for 6 hours and what we saw as red meat next to the bone might have been a vein or simply the chicken’s colour, I still believe this should not be the case when it comes to high risk food - I had food poisoning and it’s definitely not fun even after all the explanations). Overall the place is great but be aware there is no free car park but you can use the Hexagon’s one which is closest or 2 hours street parking right outside the venue. Will leave a 4 star rating as an opportunity for improvement in the kitchen, everything else works as well as expected.

Walked past the newly refurbished pub a few times and decided to head there for dinner with friends on Sat 27th December 2024. As we walked in you could tell they have done a fabulous job in turning what was a crappy old run down boozer into a nicely decked out gentrified eatery. We headed through to the restaurant in the back and was pleased it was busy. Food was really good although my prawn and crab cocktail was quite bland and small. Wife raved about the chicken liver parfait and scotch egg was nicely cooked and seasoned. Mains of Chateaubriand, venison and steak and ale pie went down a treat and were delicious. Puds were good but what stopped the award of a full five stars?? Drinks service! Ordered drinks and they still had not arrived by the time they came round again to take orders for food. And twice again had to chase staff for drinks.. other than that top notch and bill was £335 for four with starters, mains and puds plus quite a few beers and cocktails.. we will definitely be back

We stopped off here for lunch whilst visiting Reading, and we’re glad that we did. The food was all exceptional, clearly all freshly homemade and of the highest quality ingredients. The Beef and Ale Pie was particularly good, and the Fish and Chips were some of the best we’ve had in a long time. The outdoor dining area is exquisite in the sun, a slice of garden paradise in the middle of Reading. The service was faultless, it was, quick, friendly, and we never went long without someone checking in if we needed anything else. The only qualm if I had to search for one would be that the gravy served with the pie was rather odd. It wasn’t really a gravy at all but rather a thin mushroom jus, which doesn’t really pair with either pie nor beef. It should have been something more traditional, thicker and bolder in flavour, like a thick red wine gravy perhaps. But this did not take away from the overall quality of the meal nor the experience. We will definitely return to The Rising Sun should we ever find ourselves in Reading again.

I came here for the first time with my wife and son for father's day. It wasn't too busy when we arrived for lunch time. Ordered two mains for the adults and some chips for the little one. The mains came out together but we had to wait another 15 before my son got his chips. My wife and I decided to get dessert but ended up waiting 25 minutes to get it which was absurd. A table of two across from us had their dessert shortly after ordering. I won't let the experience hamper things so I would give here another go in the future. Also had an issue with the bill where I was charged for two drinks I didn't have but it was taken off when I mentioned it.

The Rising Sun on Castle Street is a newly refurbished eatery in Reading. As soon as you walk in it’s quite impressive. Drinking area at the front and outside to the rear. Relaxed and professional the staff are friendly and courteous. Tables are spaced apart giving a sense of space yet intimacy. We ate outside as it was a summers night. The menu is good with some nice choices and it rotates regularly. Trout tartare for starter (very good) followed by prawns and black rice (very good). The food is really very good. The atmosphere and ambience is lovely. The security guy was dressed in a smart casual attire. Joe served us and he was brilliant. An order on the fly of a greens side arrived in a couple minutes. In fact all the food arrived fresh within minutes. The olives are very nice. It’s a new and fresh establishment but what a breath of fresh air. Right now - The Rising Sun has nailed it. Highly recommended for dining with your partner or with friends. Update: July 2025. I’ve just had the beef roast on a Sunday. Oh wow - beef cooked to perfection. Possibly the best roast around. Recommended.

Additionally, the hotel provides free WiFi in public areas and offers EV charging parking spaces for guests driving to the property.
We had an amazing stay. The staff were outstanding—attentive across the board—with a special shoutout to Alexis at breakfast, who took care of us almost every day. The amenities are excellent, especially the pool and gym. Rooms and closet space are on the smaller side, but the thoughtful touches and great breakfast menu more than make up for it. Very kid-friendly—our kids loved getting free breakfast daily. Overall, a really lovely experience and we’d happily come back.

Overall review is because of the shockingly poor conditions of the rooms, for being a 4 star hotel. Please be aware when you book this hotel: 1) My room was entirely carpeted. Strange stains and the smell of dampness coated the room. 2) Lights have a buzzing noise- one light kept flickering and would not stop. Had to switch a room because of it. The second room also had a buzzing/flickering light. 3) Elevators are very small and take a while to reach you when it is busy. I decided to take the stairs because of this- Stairwells smell heavily of chlorine from a pool. Also stained pretty badly. 4) On my last night, I saw a cockroach crawling on the desk. It is situated in an excellent location central to Reading and is quiet. All staff were very accommodating, helpful, and kind. If you were a friend, I would not recommend staying at this hotel.

The hotel is very well located in the city centre, making travel and sightseeing easy. However, parking was a hassle—we had to walk quite a distance and pay for parking. While the hotel does validate your ticket for a significant discount, be aware that the nearby mall (where the parking is located) closes early. If you're not back by 6 PM, you’ll need to take a longer route to access the car park. The family room felt cramped and smaller than expected. Housekeeping was not very attentive and didn’t seem interested in cleaning during our stay. On a positive note, breakfast was excellent. The staff were friendly, helpful, and accommodating. There was a wide variety of food, and you could even take some items to go. The pancake and hot chocolate machines were a fun touch. Overall, despite some downsides, I would consider staying here again.

The room presented a clean atmosphere, although it seemed somewhat outdated. The bed and pillows, however, were exceptionally comfortable. I enjoyed a remarkably restful night's sleep. Overall, my experience was quite pleasant. I would certainly consider staying there again. P.S We noticed that the swimming pools were exceptionally busy, with many children enjoying the water. It appears the high number of youngsters made it difficult for others to find space to relax. Perhaps, some consideration could be given to adjusting the pool's usage guidelines. Implementing time restrictions for children might help to balance accessibility and enhance everyone's experience...

I am very disappointed with the service at this hotel. We arrived very late and the room we recieved was compeletly messy and not done as seen in the pictures I attached. We then went to reception and were told to wait another half an hour for a new room. The receptionist did not offer any compensation for the messy room. The following day I complained about a flickering light in the bathroom which was not fixed during our whole stay. The only good thing about this hotel is the location and nothing else.

The Allied Arms is a charming pub located in the heart of Reading. With its oak ceiling beams, stripped wood flooring, and framed pictures, it exudes a cosy atmosphere. The pub boasts a terrace garden that offers a beautiful setting overlooking the river, perfect for enjoying the sun and observing wildlife. The staff are known for being helpful, friendly, and efficient while maintaining proper social distancing measures.
Lovely old pub with a great beer garden. Small inside but it's one of the oldest pubs in Reading. No food is sold here but try the great range of real ales alongside cider and lagers available.
Chris R — Google review
Easily the best pub in Reading. Beautifully preserved historical features, plenty of character. I was surprised how quiet it was when I visited. Guinness wasn't great and cost £7.25, but fantastic atmosphere nonetheless.
Peter M — Google review
Fantastic little pub which I've visited a number of times over the years. Best range of beers and ciders. Didn't have food so I can't rate it. The staff were excellent too. The 2 stars represents being charged £7.50 for a pint of guiness and £8 for a whiskey.
Paul G — Google review
(Visited 2022-03-19) We popped in for a quick pre-lunch pint (and a quick post-lunch pint afterwards) and found it to be a nice, bright pub. The garden is great when the weather is good. Definitely worth visiting again. Marked down a star because at the time of visit, the Gents was the smelliest place on Earth. Hopefully, that's been resolved by now!
Steven F — Google review
Nice pub but one of the most expensive pints you'll have in the UK. Honestly more expensive than central London. My Guiness was nearly £8. Drinks are honestly cheaper at the swanky Rising Sun just around the corner.
November T — Google review
Sadly this pub is going downhill :( use to be our favourite but the prices are crazy now. Increased so much we can no longer afford too come here (compared to places around it's literally double the price) plus they never play music outside anymore , is dirty / rats etc- is a shame as use to be great! 😅
Joey G — Google review
Spent Saturday night here for second week in a row. A lively atmosphere, although the pub is small the garden is much larger and has cover too. The wildlife kept us entertained as well!
Nicholas T — Google review
Didn't eat but nice pint and lovely heaters in the garden for those chilly evenings.

The Greyfriar is a local pub in Reading, England that offers ales, gins, and local beers as well as darts and board games. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. It can be quite busy during early evening hours.
Lovely place with a cozy atmosphere and fabulous music (jazz). 🎶 The staff members are very kind and friendly, and there are many unique beers to taste and drink! As it is near the train station, it is the perfect pub to drink your beer, before your trip! Ah, and it is also a great place to spend on your time with friends!
Elena P — Google review
Beautiful, proper pub with a great selection of beers. We were on a Reading all day pub crawl and really enjoyed the Greyfriar. I'd recommend!
Benji — Google review
Great pub, just down road from station. Great selection of real ale, gins and whiskies. Friendly, helpful staff. Popped in for a swift pint whilst waiting for bus. Very good as usual. Pub felt like it had the heating on whereas it was weeks of warm weather which had heated up brickwork. A fan on bar tried to cool things down.
Andrew L — Google review
Myawlf, my partner and 4 friends came for a drink and catch up, ended up staying for longer than anticipated due to the pubs board game collection and sociable staff. Once we spotted there was a pub quiz we knew we had to stay. Ended up sticking around for hours, had a good laugh and a great night thanks to the great personalities of the bar staff and good drinks. Even got to pick the theme for the next quiz (The reward for coming last place 😅)!

Good to see an Untappd verified venue and to be able to see the beer options in advance. Helpful staff, laid-back atmosphere and quite busy for early evening. Would recommend, well balanced selection of beer styles and some interesting options.

A must visit. Great range of craft and real ale. Sahara is THE absolute vibe. If she’s behind the bar then you’re in luck 👍

Pub
Hop Leaf is a cozy and welcoming pub located on Southampton Street. It was known for its selection of real ales from the Salisbury-based brewery Hop Back, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. The pub offered not only well-kept beers but also entertainment such as dartboards and bar billiards. Visitors appreciated the staff's friendliness, the clean environment, and the great selection of beers.
One of my favourite pubs in Reading. A great selection of well kept beers at really good prices. A proper pub that deserves to be the "heart of the community".
Mark P — Google review
A proper local's pub; a little rough around the edges but warm service and a range of beers from the Hopback brewery. Loved the design of their glasses and wish they sold them! There was a customer in a "Trump, Guns, God" t-shirt so maybe not the kind of place you'd bring a date.
Peter M — Google review
I stumbled across The Hop Leaf while out walking. Staying away on business I am always on the look out for local pubs and restaurants. This pub fitted the bill perfectly, good ale, friendly staff and good atmosphere.

Understated Real Ale venue incl amusements. Warm friendly atmosphere. Well kept. Celtic typography upon signs offsets the flags. Please do not rush here rowdy crowd lovers... as I enjoy this place just as it is. First visit. Not my last. Bus route adjacent. Perfect escape from RDG Central.

This place I found for the first time a few years ago as part of the first Reading Ale Trail. It's a pub with a great atmosphere, the staff are welcoming and friendly; the beer is very well kept and delicious. A hidden gem worthy of a visit.

We really enjoyed our stay- the apartment was very nice and spacious. We had all we needed in the kitchen and were happy to have a living room where we could spend time. The bed was comfortable and bedroom was quiet. The location was excellent - near to restaurants and shops. It was also very easy to walk down to Thames and the train station was 10 min walk.
Joanna M — Google review
I have been staying at this serviced apartment since 2020, and it has truly become my first choice whenever I visit the UK. Whether it’s a short or long stay, I always return because the experience is consistently exceptional. The location is unbeatable—right in the heart of town, just a few minutes’ walk from the main train station, with everything you might need close by. The apartment itself feels like a real home: spotless, fully equipped, and designed for both comfort and convenience. It’s also very family-friendly, safe, and cosy, making it a great option when travelling with kids. What really sets this place apart, however, is the team. The staff are incredibly friendly, attentive, and always ready to help. Laura, the Sales Manager, along with the rest of the team, ensures every guest has a hassle-free, comfortable stay. Their warm hospitality is the reason I keep coming back—honestly, I can’t even remember how many times I’ve stayed here. In all my visits, I have never had a single uncomfortable experience. Quite the opposite—it has become a place I’m almost addicted to! I always recommend it to friends and relatives visiting Reading and the surrounding areas. Simply put: this serviced apartment is wonderful, and I cannot imagine staying anywhere else.

My daughter and I had a great stay at Premier Suites. The apartment was fabulous. It was clean, fresh and the facilities were great. The apartments are real well situated. We were there for Reading festival and it was handy for that. Great access to shops and restaurants too. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Look forward to staying again
Julie M — Google review
Spacious clean rooms and you’ll find everything you need in the kitchen, an iron, fans, and dish or clothes washing soaps. I was happy because they upgraded me to a two room flat freely. The ladies at the reception were welcoming and always cheerful and helpful. Great safe location near everything in Central Reading but note that its entrance is unreachable by cars other than blackcabs so consider that when checking in or out with heavy luggage. Thank you Premier Suites for making my stay comfortable in Reading
Lubna M — Google review
Great location. Staff on arrival were excellent and very friendly Apartment was well equipped Not luxurious but had everything I needed. Only downside was it was very hot and humid with only fans which just circulated the hot air. I couldn’t open the windows to get any relief Also at night the revellers in the city were v noisy .

Clean apartments with all the necessary amenities right in the heart of downtown Reading. Alina and the staff were friendly and very attentive. I highly recommend using Shehzad for your car service from the airport. He was recommended by Alina and he was fantastic.Just ask the staff at Premier and they will get you in touch with him. He was very responsive and timely, super friendly, and gave great recommendations. All around a great experience.
Jason C — Google review
I was blown away! How can they do this for the price? It is not a suite, it's a full on one bedroom apartment and a big one at that. Full kitchen, washer/dryer, everything and directly in the middle of the entertainment district and a quick walk from the train station. I could live there. Oh yeah, and don't forget the over-the-top friendly, helpful and professional staff!
Jim H — Google review
The apartment was clean, fully equipped & located in the centre of Reading. Some windows didn't operate & one broken (didn't fully close). Would recommend though & return in the future
