Abbey Wharf is a popular bi-level eatery located in Whitby, offering a versatile dining and entertainment experience for all occasions. The restaurant boasts a relaxed and welcoming ambiance with a diverse crowd, including families, friends, couples, and even pets. Established in 2015, Abbey Wharf has become one of the most favored harbourside restaurants in Whitby. The menu features an array of dishes such as fresh salads, steak, vegetarian options, seafood, and fish dishes.
We read some mixed reviews about this place before I booked, but we had a good meal and experience. I had the mussels and my husband had the calamari. They had a good amount of meat, fish and vegetarian options. Both our meals were decent. Nice music playing, chilled vibes, the cocktail menu was HUGE and went down a treat. If you’re looking for 5 star Michelin dining, this isn’t the place for you. If you want a nice, chilled eatery by the bay, you’ll enjoy this place. It was one of our favourite meals of our visit.

Great location with a terrace overlooking the harbour. Large and spacious with tables spread out - very comfy. Food was good especially the whitebait which was amazing. My husbands white fish was a little overdone but otherwise would definitely return here.
Maria 6 — Google review
Abbey Wharf is a wonderfully welcoming spot with incredibly friendly staff who make the visit feel special from the moment you arrive. The views are absolutely stunning—worth the trip alone—and it’s great to see access for all, including wheelchair users. We tried the new Craven cod, and it was awesome—plentiful, satisfying, and beautifully cooked. We also had the salmon, which was epic, and the burgers, which the boys loved. I wouldn’t go so far as to claim it’s the very best fish and chip shop in Whitby, but it’s definitely up there. Highly recommended, especially for that amazing view and thoughtful accessibility.

A great place for seafood in Whitby. Lots of seats and dog friendly too. Really enjoyed the white bait, haddock fishcake and mussels. Highly recommended!

Dog friendly place for really good food and drinks inn heart of Whitby. We had mussels, huge portions well cooked and with lovely chips and bread for sauce dipping 👌 cod and chips very good, calamari and chips again very good, friendly service great location lots of space, live Music on a Saturday night. If you are in Whitby I would definitely recommend a visit

A great place to dine by the harbour with a lively atmosphere. The food is delicious – the fish pie is especially good and highly recommended. It’s dog-friendly too, which makes it an even better spot to relax and enjoy a meal while taking in the views of Whitby.
Belle D — Google review
* Beautiful Balcony: The venue features an extensive balcony that wraps around the building, offering stunning panoramic views of the Whitby harbour, including the East and West Piers. This seems to be a major highlight for many visitors, who enjoy watching the boats and the general hustle and bustle of the town from this vantage point. Some reviews specifically mention being able to sit on the balcony with a drink or meal and soak in the atmosphere. * Very Spacious: Abbey Wharf is frequently described as a very spacious venue. It has a large restaurant area that can seat over 250 guests, a mezzanine level for larger parties and reservations, and a separate takeaway area. The generous space creates a relaxed atmosphere, accommodating different elements of food, drink, and live music without feeling cramped. The building itself is a Grade II listed building, formerly a covered market and then a factory, which likely contributes to its large, open layout. In addition to the balcony and spaciousness, other positive points from reviews include: * Food: A menu with a strong focus on seafood, as well as meat dishes and vegetarian/gluten-free options. The fish is sourced from local suppliers and the steaks are from a local butcher. * Drinks: A well-stocked bar with over 20 gins, its own beer brewed by Whitby Brewery, and a variety of other drinks. * Atmosphere: A relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere during the day, which becomes livelier in the evenings with live music events. It's also dog-friendly in certain areas. * Views: Beyond the balcony, the restaurant and mezzanine levels also offer great views of the harbour through panoramic windows.

Lively atmosphere, great views. Does the basics on food well. Dog friendly. Staff seem a little over it. Expensive on the drinks and extras. Felt a touch exploited by the cost of drinks really. bar staff had lost the will to live a little… you decide on value, receipt in photo. It’s a reliable and friendly place overall - always busy.

The Endeavour is a charming and cozy pub located in Whitby, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and their furry companions. With picturesque views of the River Esk, this dog-friendly haunt provides a great selection of cask and craft ales as well as an impressive gin list with over 25 varieties to choose from.
Dropped in for a pint after wandering around town, great pub with nice variety of beers and spirits. Saw the seafood platter on the menu which the landlord then order in for us fresh for the next day. Absolutely delicious food. Really friendly staff. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

We have just stayed in the endeavor for three days. The people are lovely. Chris and Tom the bar men and the girl are brilliant very friendly people. Adam and the manageress were very friendly and helpful with where to go for breakfast. The atmosphere was brilliant in the pub all thr time. People were singing and dancing as soon as we walked in. Rooms were lovely with a nice view. Would definitely stay again

Gorgeous pub inside and out. Greeted by extremely friendly bar staff , the Aspalls cider was excellent .We ordered the cheese board and a pork pie and both were stunning, huge portions of cheese and a mountain of crackers. We polished them off though. Loved the music playlist too. Fantastic place, great atmosphere. Second day in here, fantastic they allow you to bring your own fish n chips in. Seems most of Chesterfield was in today 😁 Thank you, see you again soon.

We had a brilliant stay here in August 2025 and upon arrival were made to feel really welcome by the gent who checked us in. Our room had a great sea view and was immaculate. There was tea/coffee/kettle and we loved the fact that if we needed any more of the items provided, there was the ability to help yourself to more from the extra items placed in the corridors. We came back from a day of exploring to find live music playing and the atmosphere was fantastic, it was a great way to end our day! We will definitely be booking here again, great all round! Thanks very much!!

A truly unforgettable stay! Endeavour Whitney is a hidden gem that has completely captured our hearts. From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by the seamless blend of comfort, style, and hospitality. The location is absolutely perfect, offering a tranquil retreat with easy access to all the charm and excitement of the town. The accommodation itself is nothing short of exceptional. The rooms are immaculate, a testament to the meticulous care and attention to detail that is evident everywhere. We were struck by how well-equipped everything was, truly feeling like a home away from home. The beds are wonderfully comfortable, providing a perfect night's sleep after a day of exploring. And for those traveling with a furry friend, the dog-friendly policy is a huge bonus that makes the entire experience so much more enjoyable. The value for money here is incredible, offering a luxury experience without the hefty price tag. But what truly sets Endeavour Whitney apart is the genuine warmth of the staff. They are welcoming, friendly, and always ready to help, making us feel like valued guests from start to finish. In every sense, our time here was an endeavor worth making. We are already planning our return and cannot recommend this place highly enough. It's a perfect 10/10 and a must-visit for anyone looking for a truly special and memorable getaway.
Marc S — Google review
A classic family friendly pub located in a beautiful coastal town city, The Endeavour did not disappoint from the moment we walked in, polite and attentive bar staff greeted us with a smile (amazing pink hair by the way) gave us a run down thay while they had cheese boards and pub snacks on offer, they do allow you to bring in food from the local chippy, (which we did) the only provision is that you (understandably) take your rubbish with you. They even have cutlery and sauces on hand. The prices are more than reasonable, especially given busy the place gets. The pub itself holds a traditional pub/inn vibe with plenty of seating and beautifully decorated with a very local theme, that takes great pride in showing the history of the pub and it's place in Whitby! Upon our next visit to Whitby, we plan on booking a room at the Endeavour so we can experience the city and night life a little bit more! An absolute must visit!
Andrew R — Google review
Such friendly, welcoming staff. Lovely, clean room. Open fire, live music and welcoming to our elderly dog. Beverages and snacks in the room was so nice. And right in the heart if Whitby. Couldn't have asked for more. Will definitely be going back x

Little Angel is a traditional pub located in a fairly central area, known for its three bars, hearty food, and live music. It has a reputation for being goth-friendly and offers a lively atmosphere with large sports screens. The pub also serves fresh stone-baked pizzas and hosts a busy events calendar. The friendly hosts and bar staff ensure that visitors receive a warm welcome and enjoy their time at the establishment.
We stayed across the road from this pub so thought we’d try it. We weren’t disappointed. The lady that served us was lovely and welcoming. The drinks were reasonably priced and they even sell tubs of dog treats which was a bonus for our little Benji.

Situated nr the top of the hill on the whale bone side of Whitby. Very busy pub, got lots of real ale to choose from. Old fashioned interior, lots of seating inside as well as a outside beer garden.

A hidden gem. Classic styled pub with a fantastic line up of cask. Nice sun trap in the garden, and a covered outdoor area in case of the typical rainfall during the British Summer. Well priced and friendly staff. I'll be back 👍
Matt C — Google review
The Little Angel in Whitby is a traditional pub known for its warm atmosphere and friendly staff. Based on various reviews, it seems to be a popular spot for both locals and visitors. Live Music & Atmosphere: * Live music is a key feature, with performances by local entertainers on a regular basis, often on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. * The pub is also popular during Whitby's Goth and Folk Festival weeks, where musicians sometimes play live al fresco sets on their beer terrace. * The atmosphere is described as upbeat and lively, with people singing and cheering. * While it can get full and there might not be a lot of room, people seem to enjoy the energy and the overall experience. Other Notable Features: * The pub offers a wide selection of drinks, including cask ales (with a discount for CAMRA members), lagers, ciders, wines, and a range of spirits. * It also has a beer terrace, which is noted as the only outdoor drinking area in the upper part of town. * The pub is child- and dog-friendly. * They show live sports on widescreen TVs and host other events like karaoke and quiz nights. * Some reviews mention that the pub also has accommodation available in a suite above the premises, which is praised for being clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. However, guests staying in the accommodation should be aware that it can be noisy on nights with live music or other events.

Went today for a drink, didn’t end up buying one as the lass had the worst customer service ever, never acknowledged us walking in, and then once all seated I went to the bar and if looks and atmosphere could kill I’d be dead, I walked away and left. Would go there again

The Duke of York in Whitby is a charming pub and inn with a traditional maritime decor and stunning views of the harbor and Whitby Abbey. This historic establishment offers simple yet modern rooms with free Wi-Fi, making it a comfortable choice for visitors. The pub serves classic hot meals, salads, and daily specials alongside a selection of real ales, craft beers, and fine wines.
Great pub, lovely area & atmosphere a must stop here if you go to whitby. Stopped both nights after a long walk upto the Abbey and after coastal path..lovely place. Small upstairs but area outside in the daytime and bar.
Shanneen P — Google review
The food is not the best thing about The Duke of York. It is in probably the best location in Whitby. Don’t get me wrong the food is not bad, the breakfast is especially good, but the location and the staff are even better We stayed one night and dropping off your cases took some planning as it is at the end of a pedestrianised zone. Don’t even try to drive to it when it is busy but it is worth the effort. Lots of pubs and restaurants nearby and great for a walkabout. The room was small but perfectly formed and had breathtaking views over the harbour entrance. It was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. We will certainly try to come back
Adrian G — Google review
Recommended to have our dinner here. Lovely pub and stunning view if you have a window seat. Great service. Food we both had fish and chips, (very nice indeed) apart from the coldish mushy peas that we had. Also £2 for bread and butter, I was expecting bread and butter for a chip sandwich, but as u can see x1 chip only on 1 slice. So that x1 slice of bread and butter cost me £1. Sorry but never again. £4 for x2 slices of bread🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️
H18-PDW P — Google review
Really delicious food (the minted peas are so good) and a really cosy venue with nice atmosphere. If you can get the window seat you have a gorgeous view of the seafront. Only issue is as it’s so small it’s tricky to get a table sometimes!
Emily M — Google review
We stayed here for one night and had a wonderful experience. The room was spotless, with a beautiful view and a very comfortable bed. We also enjoyed a delicious meal in the bar – the food was of a high standard and full of flavour. The staff were professional, attentive, and friendly, which made our stay even more enjoyable. We’ll definitely be returning in the future.

Stayed for one night on a Friday, arrived and lovely welcome at the bar. When we got in to our room, the room was gorgeous and we had a beautiful view as well over the harbour. Would highly recommend and would stay here again.
Charlotte P — Google review
Stayed here for 1 night. Room was spotlessy clean and the view was beautiful. Spent a few hours in the pub Saturday night to listen to the live music. Was a great atmosphere im there. Had breakfast the Sunday morning was lovely and hot...2 bacon, 2 sausage, 2 hash browns, 2 eggs, mushroom and a tomato. There was a selection of cereals, yoghurt too. Juices to choose from and toast. We were told there could be some noise in the rooms from the pub downstairs but this didnt apply to us as we were in the pub ourselves. Would definitely stay here again
Deborah C — Google review
Popped in for lunch, didn't book. Luckily, we got a table with a view of the harbour, seated next to the bar. Happy to see that they sold Neck Oil beer, bonus. We had Hand Battered Fish Ciabatta and Steak and Caramelised Onion Ciabatta with sweet potato fries, see photos. They were great. I enjoyed the steak and sweet potato fries and my wife enjoyed her fish. High chairs were a pain to get in and out of, but worth it for the view. Recommended and easy to find at the foot of the famous steps up to Whitby Abbey.

Had a hilarious fun evening on Sunday. The singer/guitarist was fantastic, Ill upload his duelling banjos...Mandy and the team were so friendly and up for fun. The bouncer was the best ever.. Would love to come back when next in Whitby...

As a couple we holiday to Whitby 2/3 times a year, The Elsinore was our go to pub for entertainment and quality drinks and service. WHAT has happened , the toilets oh my god they are filthy Ladies and Gents , the whole pub looks dirty and un loved . Walking up Flowergate with the sun shinning on the windows ,they are filthy ! My hubby likes hand pulled beer , and commented that it was not to its usual standard, glass appeared stained or dirty . This may seem a damming review but I would like to to tell people it a great boozer , maybe there are reasons its nose dived ? If the owner reads this please take it in the spirit it is meant , it’s a honest review and I believe it can get back to being a good pub .

Great old pub with original features, has a character of its own, think the landlord was Phil who's got a daft sense of humour. Dogs and children not allowed after 8pm.
Pete K — Google review
Its as cosy as you could make it within the current guidelines. The staff are as friendly and attentive as you could wish for. The beer whilst a little pricey is top quality (of which i am happy to pay a premium for a properly looked after and pulled pint). No need to book just turn up and see if there is a space available. We will certainly return for a pint the next time we are in Whitby.

Situated half way up the cobbled street heading towards the steps. Very old pub possibly dating back to 1600s. Has been many different incarnation over the years including; a brothel, a morgue, a hotel & a spirit warehouse. Very small inside but with a further 2 small rooms towards the back. A traditional old fashioned style pub with tapas type food. Decent pint beer but not a big selection. Friendly staff.

When you want to sit and relax and have a great pint and food this is the one. Not only is the atmosphere traditionally excellent (no blaring music, simply a quality background ambience) the staff are accommodating and friendly. Spent at least four evenings of seven on our stay in Whitby in this Inn. They welcome dogs but the one I was interested in was the black one at the bar - a smooth pint if ever I had one. Brilliant! Thank you Black Horse.

Awesome little pub in the centre of Whitby old town. Very busy, but it was Saturday night. Beer was good, some decent beers on tap. Great atmosphere, and decent music in background. Good place to meet people and chat. Doorman very friendly too 😊

Tucked halfway up the cobbled lanes of Whitby’s Old Town, the Black Horse Inn is a proper gem—steeped in history, brimming with character, and serving up one of the finest pints of Adnams Ale you’ll find this side of Suffolk. Step inside and you’re greeted by the quaint charm of the front bar room, which is delightfully snug. It’s the kind of space where strangers become friends over a shared love of good beer and better conversation. The room’s small size only adds to its appeal—it feels like a secret hideaway from the bustle outside, with low ceilings, warm lighting, and just enough room to squeeze in a few locals and a couple of tourists The pint of Adnams? Superb. Crisp, well-kept, and poured with care. It’s the kind of ale that makes you slow down and appreciate the moment. Whether you’re popping in for a quiet drink or settling in for a longer stay, the Black Horse Inn delivers atmosphere in spades. Highly recommended for lovers of real ale, cozy corners, and a proper Whitby experience

It's a friendly pub, spacious, clean and comfortable. There's a good selection of fine ales and lagers..and food is available, but I haven't eaten there yet. There is a living coal fire, lit in the winter, giving that old world ambience. It's dog friendly too.

Went here hoping for a hobbit style interior or at least something wizard-y or enchanting. Literally nothing to do with Tolkien or Middle Earth at all, apart from the Gollum sign outside. The jarring disappointment made the interior feel even more bland and charmless than it already was. Broken TV playing pop music to boot. Told to sit down and our orders will be taken from the table. No menu or wine list appeared so we asked for a cocktail from the sign above the bar, just an Aperol Spritz - "no, we don't do those." I see a Coke Zero sign above the window so ask for one. "No sorry, we've got diet Coke?" I settled for soda water. Positives - clean, efficient.

This is what we call a proper pub. It's got character and charm, a good selection of drinks, and the best name. Dogs are welcome, and given the appropriate attention. The staff and landlord were incredibly friendly, even the locals welcomed us with open arms. If we lived nearby this would be our local favourite. We'll be back very soon and couldn't recommend it enough if you're in the area.

Many similar reviews on here, but I think this pub really needs to change it's name. It's a nice pub, clean, good service and good drinks. But it has absolutely nothing to do with Lord of the Rings despite what its name, sign and posters throughout Whitby suggest. Not a single item inside that connects to the franchise or even a specialist drink or beer. Definitely feels like they are trying to pull people in with a 'hook' but then once you get there it's nothing related at all. Either lean into the theme or change it!

This is an amazing little pub a short walk from the busy hub bub of Whitby. Exceptionally friendly staff and publican. Very clean and smart with a very friendly atmosphere and seats outside with a view of the harbour and one of the heritage statues. Would thoroughly recommend this little gem.

Wow what an amazing pub. Love the fact they come to serve your drinks at the table. All staff very attentive to when you need the next one bringing. Great selection of beers. Very clean inside
Dawn P — Google review
Other than the name this pub has no connection to Tolkien at all. Very disappointing. The interior feels like a working men's club from the 1970s; dismal and bleak. We tried to make the best of our visit by ordering some of the cocktails advertised behind the bar, but despite clearly having all the ingredients the staff refused to make them. We ended up with a beer (good), a wine (cheap and nasty) and a flavoured gin (cheap and bland). You can have a better experience almost anywhere else in Whitby. Best avoided.
H I — Google review
Honestly one of the worst pubs I've ever been in. You have to order from your table, and the staff force you away from the bar, so you can't see what beer is on offer. I then ordered a 2nd pint and it never came. Gutted as I love LOTR

Pub
The Ship Inn, located along the Marine Parade in Whitby, is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. This traditional old pub offers a warm and friendly atmosphere with lovely views of the harborside. It's known for its excellent selection of gins and cask ales, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy the town's ambiance. The pub also serves delicious homecooked dishes, including tempting desserts.
Spent a wonderful afternoon here. The decor and atmosphere was fantastic. The staff and customers friendly. The music kept us there far longer than we expected. A fabulous place, I can't recommend it highly enough and will return on my next trip to Whitby.

Traditional old pub right on the side of the river in the centre of Whitby. The place was packed on a Friday night and there was also a couple singing and playing folk songs on the guitar. I had a Butterscotch vodka, which was a special, advertised on the bar, and it was one of the tastiest drinks I've ever had....delicious! No needd for a mixer, you don't want to dilute the taste. Apparently it's made in Cartmel in the Lakes but you could buy a bottle off her for £24. Oh and you need cash to pay.

Nice relaxing chilled atmosphere after a long day walking around this lovely area. I didn't have any food just two drinks, sitting in front of the window watching the world go by. Two entrances, two areas of seating, pet friendly. Card accepted, but cash is preferred which is fine, as card charges taking away profits. Nice venue, will drop in again for a full session.

Visited Whitby on a regatta day it was stuffed. What a little gem of a pub the Ship is Staff are very welcoming at this truly traditional pub No TVs with stupid football or music to loud you cannot have a conversation every thing was spot on

Dog friendly - excellent sauce on tap. Best in Whitby! Our absolute fave! Here every time we visit - so welcoming for dogs and has their own dog menu. Great drinks selection. Need to visit 100%. I have been shipfaced here once or twice.

The Ship is a pleasant pub on the Whitby Pier, with a decent selection of beers, including several hand-pumped ales at moderate prices. The pub is split into different smaller sections, so it doesn't get as loud as some. The Ship is a "Cask Marque" pub, so you can trust that its beers are well-kept and fresh. They certainly were when I visited as part of a pub crawl in Whitby. The bar staff are friendly and helpful, too. The front room offers a nice view of Whitby Pier.

Nestled within the charming Whitby railway station, The Waiting Room is a delightful micro pub that beckons those seeking a serene escape from the hustle and bustle. Since its inception in 2016, this cozy spot has become a beloved local haunt, offering an impressive selection of award-winning ciders and fine wines instead of the usual loud music or televisions. With six beers on tap and ten ciders available, patrons can enjoy well-kept brews in an intimate setting that encourages conversation among visitors.
Lovely little pub right in the train station. Had a cider flight (pictured) & an ale flight. Huge amount to choose from which was great. Very friendly barman too. Will definitely visit again.

Proper Real Ale pub within Whiyby railway station. Possibly used to be an odd Waiting Room, so it's small and probably cosy in winter. Good selection of six ales of varying strength served by knowledgeable barstaff with a real interest in what they're doing.

Really disappointed with a recent visit to this pub - we've been in plenty of times before on visits to Whitby and really enjoyed it. However this time we came for our first family holiday with our new baby (nearly 6 months, in a sling) and were turned away in a pretty snotty and rude way - "You can't bring the baby in here." Not sure what the staff member thought he was going to do at 2pm on a Tuesday. Completely understand kids not being allowed in a bar in the evening but this seems a bit heavy handed for such a small baby who isn't even mobile, and there's certainly a more polite way to say it. It just meant we had to spend our money in any other Whitby pubs who didn't have a problem with our lad. Shame!

Nestled just beyond the swing bridge, The Quirky Den awaits on Grape Lane, a charming shopping street with a colorful history dating back to 1639. Once known as Grope Lane, this unique spot has transitioned from a residence to a jeweler and even a spiritualist venue. Its exterior exudes an antique charm with its vintage color palette and bay windows, hinting at the delightful surprises inside.
It's certainly a Quirky little Den/Inn just off Church street and into Capt Cook's Passage. Small, laid back with upstairs seating. Its a popular Old ale house,so it can get very busy so limited seats available inside only. The pub has plenty of local character frequently used by Whitby locals Has friendly staff and some nice Rum. No food. But Great Pie + Mash restaurant round the corner.

A small quirky microbar situated right on the harbour front. A rough and ready bar with attitude. Limited seating downstairs but more upstairs although I can't comment as I didn't look. Some unusual beers not seen elsewhere, my partner had the Blueberry which was actually blue in colour! He described it as interesting, and although it wasn't to his taste he said that it was brewed well. I had a Eaton Mess gin and it was delicious. They advertise a large selection of gins, can't remember the actual number, but lots. They have also chalked on a black beam all the owners of the property since it was built in the 1800s and what it was used for, very interesting. Although it's very small there an air conditioning unit which will be needed on sunny days. Also the seats are quite high but they provide 'one steps' to help you up and save your legs dangling, very novel and quirky lol.

Very small. Which is the only negative. Great service , interaction by male owner on my visit. Great range of beers including Old Peculier from a wooden cask. Other plus issues dog friendly and cash only. Great visit . Highly recommend. Has now changed owners, in 2023. Much still the same. Although payment is preferred by cash they now except plastic. Beers ok but not brilliant. They now have one of these Alexa devices that can play all sorts of music depending on your taste

Such a lovely little micro bar with a great choice of beers and a really friendly owner. We ended up chatting with a lovely group of people while we were there, which made it feel really welcoming. It’s also dog-friendly, which is a big bonus for us. We’ll definitely be popping back in whenever we’re in Whitby!
Adrian L — Google review
We visited The Quirky Den as we love rock music, and the bar itself looked great with a good selection of lagers and ciders. Sadly, the owner’s attitude ruined it. We’d placed our small dog on the booth seating covered with a thick coat and blanket (no contact with the furniture), but the owner pointed at the dog then the floor and in a very sharp tone, said the dog had to be on the floor or our knee. I apologised and said that because of the blanket/coat I thought it might be okay and then went to move him on my knee, but instead of leaving it there, he repeated himself even more aggressively in a completely arrogant tone. I completely get that dogs aren’t allowed on the furniture and it’s not a problem at all, but there is no need to be so rude. We left straight away. Such a shame – it could be a great spot, but the rude owner put us off completely.

Seafood restaurant
The Marine Bar & Restaurant is a warm and inviting outpost with a relaxed seaside charm in Whitby. It offers stunning views of the harbor and Whitby Abbey, making it a peaceful spot to enjoy a delicious seafood meal paired with your favorite drink. The modern bar area serves an array of cocktails, wines, spirits, and beers while the restaurant menu features seafood specialties like fresh oysters, lobster, crab, scallops, fish cakes, and Marine Gravalax cured in-house.
First visit to the marine bar & restaurant and I would definitely return. Service was great despite potentially being understaffed with waiting staff, everyone was working really hard to ensure we had a great experience. The Food was fantastic, having had calamari in so many nice restaurants in multiple countries, this was the best both of us have ever had, scallops melted in your mouth. Mains were great too and I enjoyed my chocolate decadence dessert. Thoroughly recommend eating here when visiting Whitby

I wanted to eat seafood during my holidays in Whitby and chose the Marine Bar & Restaurant for a very early dinner. There were not many other guests yet so it was nice and quiet. The food was absolutely delicious! On top of that our table had a lovely harbour view.

A nice place if you love seafood! Here’s the feedback on food we had: Sea bass - nice but feels like there wasn’t much with it - my partner was glad he ordered fries to go with it. Sea trout - really nice! Crab linguine - tasted nice, lots of crab and reasonable at £20. It did feel like it was missing something in terms of flavour but can’t put our finger on what. It also gets very spicy as you keep eating so be aware of this! Crème Brûlée was AMAZING! Service was really good and we were glad we went, would recommend a visit.

Had a beautiful meal at the marine. The staff were accommodating and friendly, the environment was clean and comfortable and the food was incredible. Me and my mum had never had oysters so were allowed to order one each as a starter just to try, which were delicious! We then had a whole lobster thermidor each which was amazing also. Would highly recommend this restaurant!
Ashleigh S — Google review
Excellent place for seafood and good wine. We had the seafood platter which comprised whole lobster; whole crab, oysters, gravalax; mackerel pate, prawns, langoustines dressed with samphire, lemon wedges sourdough toast and the usual accompaniments of shallot vinegar, Tabasco, horseradish mayo... delicious. Washed down with some very nice French white
Rachel U — Google review
Very disappointing and overpriced. The scallops were undercooked, the pasta linguine tasted like it had been frozen rather than fresh, and the whole dish lacked seasoning or flavour. For the price, we expected far better quality and care in preparation. A positive Would be that the staff were nice and friendly. However, would not recommed.

Harry's Lounge Bar & Brasserie is an upscale restaurant and bar located in the picturesque town of Whitby. Established in 2008, it offers a fabulous mixture of cafe, restaurant, and cocktail bar. The venue boasts beautiful views of Whitby's harbor and provides a warm and stylish accommodation with free WiFi. The menu features locally-caught seafood, meat dishes sourced from local butchers, and vegetarian options.
I'm from Hull. Been out for the day stopped off at Harry's for something to eat. Straight from the off the staff was brilliant. We was greeted really well and shown to our table (it was table service too) once sat down the one of the other female staff came over asked if we would like drinks we ordered the drinks then presented the menu. Once the three of us dicided what we wanted the female staff came over ASAP. She was fantastic took our order she was really polite and had a lovely smile as did all the other staff. The food didn't take long to come out served with a smile and lovely to us all. The food we had fish and chips it was well presented and was really delicious. As we was eating we were asked if everything was okay and it was it was really great. I advise anyone especially visitors to go to Harry's great experience friendly and house warming staff. We are going back when we next visit Whitby

We came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was a posh restaurant in Whitby and we ordered lobster, steak, stone bass, and seafood pasta. It doesn’t have a view as the shops cross the street blocked it. Overall we enjoyed it for the special occasion.

Looked a nice place 2 cocktails for 15 pound sounded nice, however you could not get different cocktails they had to be the same, I asked for a porn star martini which cost 12 pound so went back and asked if I could do the 15 pound deal to be told that cocktails was not included. I realise there was a list of cocktails but felt the staff could have been a bit more helpful. We would have stayed and come back but not now

Lovely setting inside this evening. We both had Chef's specials, Hake with Sag aloo & Bhaji was excellent but the chef's fish pie was disappointing, description was white fish, salmon, prawns & mussels. This had absolutely no mussels in it and was mainly salmon & prawns with one chunk of white fish. The server gave us a glass of wine to compensate which was a nice touch but it was ashame there was hardly any white fish or mussels which are a local catch.

This is the second time we have visited here this week, the first time was a little disappointing as they had very little choice of drinks available, we were told this was because the delivery driver had let them down. It did seem to lack atmosphere and hardly had any customers in there. We ordered our drinks, which was the most expensive round yet in comparison with the other pubs around Whitby. We noticed that a couple of staff members were sat at a table especially reserved for themselves, right in front of the bar, drinking, playing darts and having their own conversation, not that we minded so much but the male staff member literally just ignored my partner who was waiting to be served at the bar and just carried on playing darts, he eventually served us but we felt like we had inconvenienced him. Surprisingly they then started closing things down at around 8pm blaming the fact they couldn’t offer a choice of drinks, but said they should get a delivery the next day. Looking back at previous reviews I can see this has been a common occurrence for the last couple of years rather than days! Also the whole pub did look really quite tired, we could see quite a few flies buzzing around and landing on the tables, which obviously doesn’t fill you with much confidence on its cleanliness, seeing they were after the left over food and drinks which were visible on the tables. The tables were so sticky, it looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in a long time, the ladies toilets were dirty, basically everything just needed a good clean! We still felt that the pub deserved another visit though, as we do love the character and location of this place and had been in many times before over the years, so we just hoped it was likely an off day for them. However the second visit was pretty much the same (in fairness worse) the same male staff member (possibly manager didn’t care if you were there or not, no choice of drinks on again, exactly the same as before (surely this can’t still be down to delivery just not turning up? Again dirty tables, dirty toilets and worse of all, we just felt like we weren’t welcome. We left after our drinks, realising we were the only couple left in there. We thanked them and headed for the door, it was 9pm, we were followed to the door which was briskly shut behind us and was then bolted up for the night! I’m not really sure what is going on here, I can only assume that this beautiful little pub with all its history, is being allowed to run itself into the ground because you can clearly see minimum effort is being put in to running it, such a shame because given it’s location, with the right people running it, it really could be a little gold mine! As the staff are quite rude, the male one in particular, they clearly don’t want you there and can’t wait for you to leave, so unfortunately we won’t be going in again until it’s under new management! Actually wish I’d have read previous reviews before going in.

Can't comment on the beer but apart from the view there's nothing to recommend it. It was a cold day but the heating wasn't on (we were next to the radiator) and everyone was sat with their coats on. The area we sat in looked tired and not very clean. We ordered lunch, it wasn't too busy so was served quick. It was the cheapest of everything. You could count the number of chips on the side order, 24, at nearly £4 and not hot. Even the tea was made with water that wasn't hot enough.

Such a shame. This could be a lovely pub except for the staff. What a horrible experience. The guy managed to just about drag himself off his chair to serve me. He looked quite put out that he had to get up. Came over no hello or anything just stared at me. I ordered the drinks. I had a mocha. He used the machine and handed me a half a cup full. I said is that it? Surely it meant to be full? He looked at me like I was mad. So he put it under again and filled it up. £8.60 for pint of theakstons & a mocha. He slouched off somewhere never to be seen again, maybe to get rid of the dead lice! Anyway I put my sugar in had a sip and it was disgusting, persi think the milk was on the turn. Went back to the bar obviously he was no where to be seen. There was a woman sitting there on her phone/tablet whom I guessed worked there. So I called excuse me about 3 times, she was that engrossed in her device, with her legs up on the bench. A regular had to get her attention for me! I told her the drink was awful and I couldn't drink it. Her reply was that it was the machine that made it and what does she expect her to do. Told her it tasted off she said it's filled up fresh every day, very unlikely with these 2 members of lazy staff. I stood there and said I can not drink it. She basically threw my money back at me. All we can say is they are rude, incompetent staff and whoever owns that pub needs to retrain them in everything or get rid. Most unpleasant experience in Whitby. Will never recommend this pub due to the staff. Such a shame.

Our visit to the Whitby Way was a good experience, the fish & chips were hot and delicious, the beer excellent, the surroundings clean and reasonably peaceful, but it is always a little busy around the area. The area is also interesting and busy with the fishing boats, the docks and often outside markets nearby, but it isn't too offensively noisy. All things considered, the area is interesting and busy, but also friendly and one can relax there.

Could be a nice little pub however the main reasons it's awful is the rudeness of the female bar staff. It's a 50/50 chance if you get a welcoming what can I get you? or a hostile what do you want! Toilets are very unpleasant and technically outside so cold. Have been in 3 times now and terrible experience every time. Such a shame as it does have some great qualities. Try the Buck Inn or Little Angel for a far superior social.

I've been in the pub today, with a large group of friends, and all I can say is the service was amazing, Edward on the karaoke and Nathan behind the bar. My husband visited the pub on Saturday 2nd August for a quick pint. He said the atmosphere was good but the big, blonde barmaid purposely ignored him ar the bar before serving numerous others when he was next in line to be served. We were here as visitors and the barmaid made sure that we knew that. 5* for atmosphere but 1* for the rude, miserable looking barmaid.

Pub
Arch & Abbey is a charming micropub tucked away from the hustle and bustle, offering a laid-back atmosphere with a traditional feel. It's a dog-friendly spot where you can unwind and savor an extensive selection of craft beers, real ales, ciders, Yorkshire gins, spirits, and wines. The bar takes pride in supporting local producers and features locally sourced Yorkshire gins, vodkas, and rums.
Lovely pub at the top of town, good selection of beers! Quiet, no music or TV and just the sound of chatter. Would also recommend it's sister pub 'The Waiting Room' in the station

Lovely place. Great selection of beers. Local Real ales on draft but also a wide menu of bottles and cans. Non of the normal ones which is brilliant. Kid and dog friendly. Deffo worth a stop off for a quick couple. Offered a good selection of vegan and gluten free beers all labelled which was excellent.

Loved this microbrewery. The guy behind the bar was very helpful, not only about the beers, but also about place's to visit and the history behind some of Whitby's landmarks and ghosts etc. As you would imagine some great beers to choose from, my partner had the Flintshire and really enjoyed it. I tried a Hooting Owl rhubarb and vanilla gin and it was delicious. Oh I didn't mention that they had a range of local gins as well, ask to see the menu. The place is situated on the main street heading up the hill on the opposite side from the Abbey. A typical rustic, modern interior. Definitely worth a visit.

Really great micro pub. On the larger size for a micro but looks great, is comfy and really friendly. Good selection of beers on tap as well as extensive range of bottles and cans to choose from. Had a lovely hour here and I cannot wait to come back. Get yourself in, you won't regret it!

A great indie beer bar with amazing decor and excellent range of real ales and craft beer. The only negative was lack of atmosphere, could do with at least some background music. Appreciate not all want music, but it made the place seem quite flat, which was a bit of a shame given there is so many positives. Keep up the great work in keeping indie beer alive.

Really nice ambient and perfect service. Good beer and spirits selection.

"A hidden gem for lovers of proper drinks!" This charming little micropub is a real treat – cosy, welcoming, and full of character. The rotating selection of ales is always well-kept and spot-on, with something new to discover each visit. Their whisky shelf is a treasure trove, with knowledgeable staff happy to recommend a dram to suit your taste. Whether you’re here for a quiet pint, a rich whisky, or just good conversation, this place is proof that small really can be perfect

Pub
The Granby is a popular and cozy pub in Whitby that welcomes both kids and dogs. It's a favorite among locals and tourists, offering generous portions of classic pub dishes in a laid-back setting. Situated conveniently close to the seafront and town, it's an ideal spot for families, couples, and solo travelers to enjoy good food and ale throughout the day. While it can get busy in the evenings, there are plenty of other nearby pubs to explore as well.
First time visit yesterday. Popped in for food. Staff were really friendly, food was excellent and also very reasonable. Decent beer available. Nice clean and tidy hotel and bar. Can't fault the place. Will be out go to for lunch next time we visit Whitby.
Sean H — Google review
We tried here for lunch for the first time on 15th April and the food was fantastic. We had the lasagna (homemade, cheesy, loads of flavour and a decent portion) and the mixed grill. Both dishes were top quality and very good value for money. The kids menu was also very good quality and fair value. Would definitely try again if we go to Whitby.

Called in on the off chance. Great friendly and welcoming pub. Good selection of main courses all very reasonably priced. We had the fish and chips and cottage pie. Could not fault either. Thoroughly enjoyed.

We alternated between the roast pork ,roast lamb and fish and chips.. the fish when was Massive and the taste was out of this world. The roast dinners were fantastic value and was probably the best dinners ever had eating out. Nice clean and friendly atmosphere drinks were reasonably priced and in this day and age the glasses were clean.

Been coming to Whitby once a year for about 10 years & our accomodation is just up the road from The Granby, it's a lovely pub with good beers at alright prices. They do really good food, been for the breakfast a couple of times & it always hits the spot & not badly priced either. Some of the other customers that go in there are not the politest of people & their choice of conversation leaves a lot to be desired, but that's the pubs fault. We've been there on a late night as well & it's just as good on an evening as it is during the day.
Steven M — Google review
A wonderful busy pub with what appeared to be a good mix of locals and tourists. The menu is not large but has a good choice and I am guessing it helps makes service really quick and the food was great. Good selection of drinks available and a nice chatty noise and background music. Suggest booking a table like we did!
Diccon P — Google review
Good value Sunday Roast, plentiful tender meat with delicious Yorkshire pudding and meaty gravy. Roasted carrots were tasty alongside red cabbage, yet too many peas (perhaps white cabbage or broccoli could be incorporated maybe?). Mash potatoes and roast potatoes served. Traditional English pub setting - a profound difference to Wetherspoons and similar - the classic character is maintained, enhancing the experience. Drinks prices on a par with competition (£4.60-£4.90 a pint of ale/lager). Sensed a feeling we were being rushed despite only being there for 1hr10min, souring the final moments of our visit, hence the dropped star.

Called in today just for one drink. Nice relaxing afternoon. The lady behind the bar was lovely. And we were even offered a chocolate from one of the locals. It was so nice. Hopefully on a longer stay in Whitby we'll make the most of this lovely pub.

Where do I start? Stayed one night. Advertised with "free parking". The parking is only available if you can follow the convoluted instructions leading through a rabbit warren of narrow alleyways and lanes. If you do find it, the door which should lead into the hotel is locked. You negotiate your luggage down a steep public stairway, across a public carpark, through a back alley past overflowing rubbish bins. Forget about getting your suitcases to the room. You can barely get your handbag there. The room? Clean but tiny, no air conditioning, just a small personal desk fan and open windows looking out over an old rooftop. No insect/security screens. No toaster, microwave, plates, utensils or fridge. So the milk, butter and bread that we carry for breakfast had no refrigeration. There is a coffee pod machine that works. The phones are not answered. Just a voicemail referring to another phone number. Second number is not answered. Goes to a voicemail to "leave a message". The reviews for this place as a pub may be fine. For accommodation? Go elsewhere. Pay more or less but avoid staying here. You can do better. I have photos of the overflowing rubbish bins you have to sidle past to access your room but their is no option to add pics to this review.

Visited here in August, the lady on the bar was rude . Served us warm can of Guinness . She could have said Thay had not been in the fridge so we could have chosen something else . We also complained about a drink that tasted funny just to be told there’s nothing wrong with it . She made no effort to try the drink herself. Made no offer to exchange it . So we just left it on the bar for her to pull a right face at us . Definitely need some customer service lessons

Always a warm welcome. Great atmosphere and the beer is always well looked after. Prices seemed a little higher than last time but still very reasonable. Disappointed that there was a dog sat on the seating but I'm sure the staff were unaware. Will definitely visit again and the view from the picture window. WOW.

A great craft union pub in a fantastic place at the quayside of Whitby. It's loud in there. But a great atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. Dog friendly too. We only had drinks and it was great value and good beer.
David H — Google review
Stayed for a night and while the room was clean and had basic facilities, the amount of noise from the pub below was unbelievable - singing, shouting and karaoke till 1am, then shouting and fighting in the street till past that. The rooms were incredibly hot and the small fan supplied was useless. Hugely overpriced and do not stay here unless you have a high noise tolerance.

Nestled in the shadow of Whitby Abbey and overlooking the North Sea, Whitby Brewery Ltd was established in 2013 by four passionate brewers. The brewery offers a selection of hand-pulled beers and operates a bottle shop. Situated next to the historic abbey, it has quickly gained local acclaim for its Yorkshire ales, which are served in various establishments around Whitby. Housed in a converted barn, the brewery's small bar serves cask beers and bottles produced on-site.
Great brewery with a tap. Popped Ina couple of times during my stay and was busy. Nice selection of on and off sales. Also do pizzas which are decent too. Close. To the abbey and a couple of handy van stops. Recommended 🍻 🍕🦇🧛‍♂️

Wonderful place with really friendly staff but more importantly, fantastic beer. Would 100% recommend the Jet Black. Sampled a ‘few’ pints whilst on holiday last week and ordered a box for free delivery once I got home. A great spot overlooking the Abbey and exceptional location to view the sunset. And cheaper than most pubs in the town as well.

Climb the stairs and reward yourself with a beer! We booked one of the tours and had a beer before we went in, nice chilled vibe. Was a warm day so outside seating was full. Tour was great, Devon made it informative and fun. £15 with 3 samples, always interesting to see behind the scenes. We went back the next day for more beer and pizza, which was so good, and is cooked really quickly! Good if you’re in a rush or just need to soak up the alcohol 😆 Everyone was really friendly, shoutout to the girl with the Beetlejuice tattoo, and the brewer and his family who we happened to share a table with 😃

Awesome venue. Was really busy when we visited even though Whitby was generally quieter than usual. Seems to get a lot of walkers. Friendly and helpful staff, great beer selection and a little shop with some merch... I got a baseball cap. Beautiful setting right opposite the Abbey, which also means there is a lot of parking just over the road.

Make sure you come around 4-5pm, the pizzas tend to sell out by the time live music starts. You also want a nice little table where you can sit and enjoy :) we made friends and had a great time. The band on Saturday didn’t start until about an hour after 7pm. Had the Black Death stout and it was delicious! Great view of the Abbey!

Dolphin Cottage is a charming two-bedroom holiday home located in the heart of Whitby. The renovated cottage offers a comfortable stay with amenities such as a TV, well-equipped kitchen, and a bathroom. Guests appreciate the cleanliness of the rooms and the welcoming nature of the owners. The central location allows for easy access to Whitby's attractions and dining options. However, it's worth noting that the steep stairs may pose challenges for elderly guests.
We had a lovely couple of nights in this genuine 18thC cottage in the old part of Whitby, very central & close to the harbour. This is a beautiful & well-decorated building, all fresh and clean. Plenty of equipment if you want to eat in; we didn't, & there are plenty of places to eat, all sorts of quisines, all in handy walking distance.

Lovely cottage in the beating heart of Whitby. Rooms were brilliant and very clean on arrival. Owners were very welcoming and left a really nice present for our stay - that was very appreciated! Everything you could want to do within Whitby is within walking distance. Also dog-friendly which is a bonus for us. The only caveat that I found with the cottage is that the stairs from the 2nd to 3rd floor are precariously steep and would cause a bit of trouble with elderly people. Overall though, this didn't effect our stay, and we had a great week!

The Magpie Café, located in Whitby, is a renowned waterfront eatery that has been serving traditional fish and chips and exquisite seafood dishes for decades. After being rebuilt following a fire, this historic establishment continues to draw long queues due to its stellar reputation for fresh fish and seafood sourced daily from local boats. Housed in a charming 18th-century merchant's house turned restaurant since 1939, it has become an iconic Yorkshire institution.
Wow, I can see why this place is so popular. Beautiful views, delicious food and a great atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We didn't have to queue long to be seated but when we left the queue was quite long so be prepared for that. I had the fish pie which was so good! The portion size was great. My friends had fish and chips and they said the fish was amazing. We all really enjoyed it.

The food was as expected, fantastic! Best mushy peas I've ever had in my life. My husband was swooning over the fish and chips, and crab bisque...lol Service was fast and our waitress very pleasant. I had a little trouble navigating the stairs to enter, since I use a cane to walk, but I was very happy to see they had a lift inside to get to the floor with the restrooms.

We had lunch here today. They sat us quickly. They are very helpful. The food was amazing cooked perfectly. The best cod and chips I have ever had. Chips light and fluffy. The batter was delicious and crispy. The cod was super fresh and flaky. And that’s coming from a fishmonger of 17 years. Also had their curry sauce. The best chip shop curry sauce I have ever had. A 10 star visit

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely fantastic experience at The Magpie Café! The food was delicious from start to finish. The fish and chips were top class, crispy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour. Wow! This is such a great spot! It's really popular, but the place is quite big, we waited for 15 minutes without a reservation. The food is so fresh! I really can say that the prawns were the best I've ever had. They were truly a delight. The salmon is really good as well. Fresh and delicious. This was the highlight of our Whitby trip!
Nikita — Google review
We pre-booked to avoid the queue and were seated promptly, though the table was quite small and a bit cramped. Starters were the highlight, especially the goat’s cheese salad and the black pudding bon bons, both packed with flavour. Mains were a mixed bag: the crab and chips were enjoyable, but the salmon salad was disappointing, with the salmon being quite tough. Overall, it was an okay experience, but we’ve had better meals elsewhere in Whitby.
Matt B — Google review
I ordered the Four Fish Platter with Cod, Haddock, Plaice, and Skate Wing. It was my first time trying Plaice and Skate Wing in a fish & chips style, and they were absolutely delicious perfectly cooked with a light, crispy golden batter and fresh flavour. Whitby Abbey, perched on a clifftop overlooking the town, is a historic site with ties to English poetry and Bram Stoker's Dracula. The 199 Steps lead up to the imposing ruins, while nearby attractions include the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and Whitby Museum. The landmark church of St. Mary's, where Captain James Cook once worshipped, overlooks the town from East Cliff.
If you’re into gothic style ruin and seaside cliff view, Whitby Abbey is the perfect place. The view and ruin are magnificent. Beside that, you can go to the visitor centre which is very informative about the history. There’s a huge car park so you don’t need to climb up the steps to reach it.
Fitria P — Google review
Several websites entice readers to visit Whitby Abbey and “sink your teeth into years of history”. This figurative phrase is no doubt a nod to the dietary behaviour of Dracula, who has a connection to the Abbey. Whitby Abbey is steeped in history. It also has well-known connections to several literary giants, including Bram Stoker, Sir Walter Scott, and Lewis Carroll. Relatively little of the history or literary ties would be apparent when walking around the ruins, other than some info at the visitor centre. However, one of Whitby Abbey's charms is its gothic beauty on the barren hillside by the sea. Walking through the Whitby Abbey ruins during the day reveals the intricate work of the arches and pillars. But several other UK abbeys overshadow Whitby's relatively smaller size and substance, which makes the price a bit steep, unless you have English Heritage membership. Fortunately, we also visited the previous evening -- after hours, taking pics of Whitby Abbey from outside the stone walls. A glorious May sunset provided more striking illumination of the Abbey’s gothic style. That was also an excellent time to view the adjacent cemetery as well as Whitby town from the hill and to walk down the steps. Only an dozen or so people on the steps or near the Abbey at sunset. The visitor centre has a good display of Abbey information, including literary connections and a 1st edition of Dracula book inscribed and autographed by the author Bram Stoker. Visited in mid-May 2025.
Steve M — Google review
Lovely place to visit. Halloween is a spectacular time to visit. So many people dress up, it's amazing. At night when the Abbey lights up, ghost talks, roast chestnut stands, fire pits and marshmallows. I would suggest any one to go, even with the kids, they will love it - ours did! And Whitby is a beautiful place to see. Lots of places around to go and look at.
Fangzz V — Google review
The Whitby Abbey is absolutely stunning! The 199 steps up lead to stunning views of the town and sea which are beautiful and perfect for photos. When we got there it was already closed, so we could only see it from outside the stone walls, but still, the ruins and the historic graveyard are impressive. It’s definitely worth a visit.
Gretchen E — Google review
Whitby Abbey is a hauntingly beautiful place — dramatic ruins perched high above the sea with incredible views over the town and coastline. The atmosphere is both peaceful and powerful, especially at sunset. The visitor centre tells the story of the abbey and its connection to Dracula in an engaging way. A perfect mix of history, mystery, and breathtaking scenery — truly unforgettable.
David G — Google review
Had a walk up the infamous 199 steps on two occasions - once with our 4 year old daughter and the next day with our two dogs. Everyone enjoyed it. Things to prepare for this time of year; it's windy. Really windy. Wrap up. Some were less prepared and shivering at the top. It's wide open and exposed. Dress appropriately! For those less keen on steps, there's a path to the side of the steps - Donkey Path! Once upon a time, the donkeys would work there, walking up and down serving the people of Whitby and it's carrying needs! The church, ruins, museum, cafe and brewery were all visited over the two days and would recommend them all!
Peter D — Google review
Whitby Abbey is a great place to visit, if you like history and old sites of interest. You can park up the top, or walk up the famous steps. Even better, go on the open top bus and see Whitby from a different angle. English Heritage run the Abbey they’ve invested a big sum of money into making it a great experience. We got some vouches to get in free from a news paper, otherwise it can be pricey for a family. Obviously members can get in free. We cancelled our membership after paying for a year when covid hit, and we felt ripped off.

I have gluten intolerance and I never get to try anything like fish pie. But the servers were extremely knowledgeable and even without me asking told me that I do not need to worry about cross contamination. Whenever I ask for anything related to gluten in London, people are confused. It's so refreshing to see a tourist town having such know about allergens. The food was great. Generous quantities and worth the money.

Really good fish and chips! They cook their chips in beef dripping, but also have a vegetarian side cooked in vegetable oil. I was a little disappointed in the size of the cod. I ordered the large at £21.95 and it was no different in size, even smaller than some of the mediums I could see on others plates. The mushy peas were excellent, the curry sauce looked bland but was very tasty!

The menu includes options like beer-battered prawns and oyster platters as well as hearty burgers and barbecue ribs.
Both the cocktail mocktail and the food are of very high quality. It is a bar and restaurant with no seating. As long as there is a table, you can sit down freely. In terms of food, a special recommendation is the octopus seafood with slow-cooked pork. The pork is full of fragrance and has a very good texture. The octopus is cooked to perfection and very spicy. All the alcoholic drinks are very good in terms of taste and taste. It is suitable for everyone to come here to chat with friends and enjoy a wonderful afternoon.

We managed to book a table for our group of 8 and really enjoyed it. There are plenty of seats in the front with a direct view of the sea and harbour and also a lovely big dining area upstairs. The restaurant is located perfectly on the busy promenade where it's very central but not too loud. The service was great and the food well made and tasty. Everybody had a good time!

Staff were lovely, it was a nice spot. The cocktails were okay - not much to the mojitos. For a cocktail bar expected a bit more. The food was good - but for the price it was a bit on the high side. However everywhere around the area the prices were high, but I understand that’s just the current economy. Would come again, but would not drink.

Specialty Museums
Whitby Museum is a diverse local-history museum that offers a wide range of exhibits, from fossils and taxidermy to ship models and jet collections. The museum delves into the town's strong maritime connections and showcases collections from the North York Moors National Park, spanning prehistoric times to the present day. Visitors can explore galleries dedicated to carved jet, photography, archaeology, geology, fossils, and an extensive costume collection.
Love this museum, theres so much to see and so eclectic. Annual ticket is £8.50. Worth it because I was here 4hrs and probably only had a good look at 60% You enter through a terrific art gallery (free). Big collections of maritime, Jet, fossils, weaponry, medievals
Vince — Google review
Whitby Museum is a hidden gem! The collections are incredibly interesting – from fascinating fossils and maritime history to beautiful local artifacts. Unfortunately, we only had about 2 hours to visit, but I’m sure you could easily spend much longer here exploring everything. The museum is in a lovely location, close to a park and a playground, so it’s perfect for a family day out. Only adults pay for entry, and the ticket is valid for a whole year, which is amazing value. There’s so much to see and learn – I can’t wait to come back!
Lasica696 — Google review
A very interesting museum, set in the lovely Whitby Park—perfect for a walk before or after your visit. There’s plenty to see, with most of the items generously donated. Tickets are great value and include free return visits for a whole year, which is a real bonus. There’s also a small tea room inside, ideal for a quick break.

This is a wonderful informative visit that’s needs time to be able to review everything the museum has to offer. It has disabled access at the back very friendly staff lots of clean toilets and disabled facilities the museum contents oh my goodness you couldn’t ask get lost in the history that this museum offers. You really do need more than half a day to look round the many sections that are packed with historical events local history events and all of the many items to review ………… it’s very warm and welcoming one price gets everyone in and your admission allows a whopping 12 months come back as many times as you want or can. The grounds outside are spectacular even at the end of September when we visited there were a host of beautiful welcoming colourful blooms to invite you to invest your time walking round or sitting in one of the many seats available to sit and look around at the most spectacular sites that Whitby has to offer.
Steph B — Google review
This is such a lovely place to spend a few hours - we recently visited for the first time and it's kooky and charming and just a treat for anybody who wants to learn more about Whitby and the surrounding area. A huge variety of exhibits to enjoy (including the legendary hand of glory!) and a stunning collection of ship models, fossils, jet, vintage photos and animal displays. And it's all set in beautiful Pannett Park.
Cara R — Google review
Lovely little museum that is packed full of interesting and wonderful artifacts. We loved looking at the vintage toys! Admission for kids is free and it is inexpensive for adults, admissions gets you an annual pass for free entry for the year.
Catriona T — Google review
Really wonderful museum packed full of history of whitby, Natural history and key time period discoveries. Admission covers you for a whole 12 months from your first visit too which is a lovely touch. 😊

History Museums
The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is a must-visit attraction in the east side, located on Grape Street. It offers historical and ethnographic exhibitions that provide insight into Captain Cook's life and his voyages to the South Pacific. Housed in a property built in 1688, this museum was where Cook lodged during his apprenticeship before becoming known as the Great Circumnavigator.
When the 17 year old James Cook first came to Whitby to learn to be a seaman, he lodged in this well preserved 17th century house. There's many maps and documents covering Cook's life and voyages. It's also interesting to see what the home of a Quaker family was like. The attic is where the apprentices slept. The scientific knowledge and discovery of thousands of previously unknown flora and fauna species, as well as encountering new peoples, is fascinating and very well presented. The whole museum is excellent, good value and well worth visiting.

Very interesting museum. Two adults with gift aid was £22. 4 floors of information and things to see. Staff are helpful and friendly. Gift shop is good too.

Chris told us a very interesting story about Captain Cook and sailors. Alex helped him to compare challenges in olden days of survival at the ocean to surviving in space and potentially to Mars.
Julia P — Google review
ok im a bit bias but I love anything Captain Cook he's an amazing piece of Australian history in colonisation...im not going to debate the rights or the wrongs because it's history and we can not change it ...if you take everything out of it he was an amazing seamen in his time ...this a small museum and Whitby is an absolutely beautiful little town to visit as well if your there check it out ...there is or maybe was a replica Endeavour in the bay as well that was for sale so not sure its still there . definitely work a look but sadly a floating restaurant
Warren B — Google review
Very interesting museum with lots of information to read across three floor levels in a house in which captain Cook once resided during his stays in Whitby. Definitely worth a visit. Especially for people who are interested in seafaring.
Brynja K — Google review
Great little museum. Not just on Captain Cook, had interesting historical facts on navigation, medicine etc too. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable.
Emma B — Google review
Amazing experience. Staff very professional and kind , we learned a lot and we definitely left the museum touched by all that we've learned. The vast knowledge of the museum's guide and his passion was touching. We left the place feeling really greatful for people that make such a great difference to our world.

We called in as we were passing(and also had a discount voucher,so thought we'd use it). It's quite a small place, but gave plenty of information about Cook, his start and how he became what he did. An informative little place.

Pub
The Fleece is a cozy and welcoming pub located in the heart of Whitby. It's popular among locals and offers a warm atmosphere for visitors. The pub has two rooms, one with a TV and a moderate-sized crowd, while the other provides a more intimate setting. They offer a selection of cask beers, including options from Whitby Brewery that are unique to the area. Additionally, The Fleece is dog-friendly and provides water bowls and treats for your furry companions.
Great pub. God selection of beers. Outside area facing Marina. Very good traditional pub. Nice warm fires if there's a chill outside. Local musicians usually have jamming nights on a Wednesday. All are welcome to listen and join in if you are so inclined... Try it out, and you will enjoy it..

Guinness is really good (and at the right money), very friendly staff, fabulous outdoor sitting area, just by the waterfront. The view over Whitby is amazing. Definitely one of the best pubs in Whitby to visit
Vangelis T — Google review
Lovely place, on the outskirts of the main town. But was still quite busy. Seemed to me it was more of a locals pub which was nice. Didn't try food here this time but will do next time. The pizzas looked amazing
Alex H — Google review
The Fleece is a lovely quaint pub, we found it halfway through our holiday, so we went there for the last 2 nights. A group of friends gathered and played their musical instruments together. It was charming. We did not eat here so I can't comment on that.

Historical landmark
Whitby Harbour West Lighthouse, located on Ling Hill near the fishing fleet base of Whitby Harbor, has a rich history dating back to Captain Cook's voyage of discovery in 1768. Originally built as a pair of towers in 1858, it now stands as a white, hexagonal tower offering stunning coastal views. Visitors can reach the lighthouse via a scenic walk along the headland and climb 81 stairs to enjoy panoramic vistas.
A nice piece of architecture, one of two lighthouses that looks out onto the ocean. This is a nice spot to appreciate the ocean and experience the fresh sea breeze.
Matt H — Google review
Not a bad pier by any means, but the one on the other side is just better. I liked the views there more there. Felt a bit more windy for some reason on this very pier, BUT then might have been just me.
Ondra V — Google review
Nice bracing walk along the peir to the lighthouse. Great view looking back towards Whitby from the end of peir. Keep an eye out for the harbour seals who sometimes pop up to show you their presence. Had lovely time there to catch sunrise and sunset colours there. Best spot for getting good photos.
Win T — Google review
Nice to walk around here, very cold and windy during the winter
J — Google review
Lovely view point and today it was beautiful and warm and the sea was so calm, you could see for miles, it was through the week in June and we arrived very early to avoid the crowds so it was lovely and quiet, there were a lot of boats about which was enjoyable to watch and the birds are funny to see, the beach looked beautiful the sea so blue, it sad that we can not walk on the beach this time of year because we have our little dog he loves the sand, but responsibility and rules must be followed. The weather did get to 27c so we had to leave by 12pm dogs and heat not good. Be kind in summer did notice people dragging dogs around with no water.
G-STAR R — Google review
What a wonderful place to stroll during any visit to Whitby! Harbour arms generally make for good walks but this one is really fascinating.
Stuart H — Google review
Approach to the lighthouse is by the pier where there is plenty of seating to enjoy the beautiful views over the beach and harbour, have an ice cream or eat fish and chips from one of the nearby takeaways. Unfortunately access to climb to the top of the lighthouse is currently unavailable due to the Covid 19 rules but still a place that you should visit during a day out to Whitby.
