Pub
Restaurant
Located across from Sunderland's Empire Theatre, The Dun Cow is housed in a Grade II listed Edwardian building, featuring Art Nouveau-style woodcarving and plaster elements. Divided into three main areas, the pub boasts a stunning bar with intricate detailing and a lobby entrance adorned with stained glass panels. Recognized as a national treasure for its historic interior, the pub showcases etched panels, bevelled mirrors, fine plasterwork, and grand fireplaces.
Visited with my Brother and Boyfriend. On my Boyfriend's recommendation. Such a wonderful, fascinating pub with a lot of original and historical features which was fascinating. It's small but perfectly formed (a bit like myself haha) the staff are super friendly and chatty. Very quick and professional service. Good choice of ales and other drinks. Fantastic for pre theatre drinks as it's only a few steps away from the Sunderland Empire. It can get quite busy but you don't wait long. Prices are very reasonable. Toilets are small but clean and well maintained. Would recommend.

Proper pub, well kept beers. Really nice pint of Theakstones hand pulled best bitter. The detailed bar is a must see. Made when people were proud of their craft.

We've been going here for a lot of years and it is one of our 'go to' places for a very enjoyable drink. Sunderland is a nice place to drink if you know where to go, and the Dunn Cow is one of the few, traditional and friendly pubs left in the town.
North S — Google review
Fantastic style of pub, unchanged decor in a long time. Great selection of beers and lagers on Draft and Cask. Food wasn't as great as I expected but still very nice, maybe slightly overpriced. Great, friendly bar service though. Calm, chilled atmosphere inside.
Bradley W — Google review
Been visiting The Dunnie (Australian readers; it's not) for years on and off. I used to look forward to a pint of Cameron's Strong Arm, and that's why i knocked a star off the rating - i couldn't have one today. Loads of craft ales to choose from and a decent pint was enjoyed. Good craic from the bar team as well.
Neil O — Google review
Canny disappointed with this place. Came highly recommended and to be fair it did have a fair selection of beers and ales. The disappointment came with the atmosphere ... There was none. Unlike other pubs we went in in Sunderland there was no friendliness or welcoming vibe. Just served and sat down. It was fairly busy but just had a bit of a pretentious feel to me, maybe I am judging harshly as other places were really friendly but this is how both my wife and I felt during and after our visit. Wouldn't rush back here.
Sean H — Google review
Just had the most delicious Sunday lunch at The Dun Cow, food was really tasty, beautifully cooked and plentiful. The puds were so good too, and a wide range of ales and other drinks to choose from. Friendly bar staff and a beautiful bar to admire while you sit! Will definitely be returning ☺️👍
Caroline T — Google review
Only my second ever visit. Casta found it in his 2023 CAMRA Good Beer Guide. In said guide not just for beer but because this Grade 2 listed building beside the famous Sunderland Empire Theatre has a pub decor of significant historical heritage..in other words "bloody lovely". On a rubbish August evening of damp grey skies this lit up the evening. Great selection of real ale. Casta chose an " off the wall" beer...a blue raspberry and coconut milkshake pale ale! From Play Brew breeery. Different but would not have another.

Live music venue
If you're a guitar enthusiast in Sunderland, you’ll want to immerse yourself in the vibrant live music scene that Guitar Lessons Sunderland encourages. Among the top spots to experience this is Independent, a beloved nightclub known for its eclectic mix of DJ nights and live performances. This venue stands out for its alternative music offerings, ranging from Nu-Jazz to Acid House and Rock 'n' Roll, providing clubbers with a unique night out.
It only took is 20yr 🤪 to go to Independent but for a £7 surcharge to get in was a shock. They have there famous blue pints though for a £5. A beer pong table was setup and a few stools and booth tables with a integrated soundsystem playing. We had fun. It was clean and friendly Prices were a bit more than I was expecting but its all good. Hopefully we'll go back when they have a gig on.
Vickie W — Google review
Went to the ska night tonight, brilliant band, great crowd, great doormen, canny staff. Ran out of gin 8pm , ran out of tonic 1 minute later. Its saturday night and it's an older crowd. Poor management.
Gavin L — Google review
Everytime others I know and I attend this venue, we contract a bad illness of some sort. Every single time. Deep clean this venue properly and hire a regular janitor(s). It's ridiculous.

It’s a bit like a haunted house funfair ride but as a club

place was completely dead. graffiti all over the bathroom walls saying how bad the place is. 14.00 entry fee ( there was 2 of us ) when it stated on the website 3.00 each. Midnight on a Friday and it’s completely dead. it is saddening as the place has potential

Great venue for live music, but also does the best music on a night out in Sunderland. Definitely worth the visit if you're into indie music.

Bar
The Engine Room is a Sunderland bistro that offers a variety of hearty British classics and contemporary dishes. It is popular for pre-show meals, aftershows, and special occasions. There is also a wide range of sandwiches and light bites perfect for those not wishing to showcase their lack of self-control.
The food and service was amazing. The menu was varied from street food, small plates, burgers and more traditional mains with quite a selection of veggie and vegan options. Our server was lovely; talked through drinks choices, came back for orders when she said she would, helpful and friendly. We would definitely return if in Sunderland.
Kelly G — Google review
Nice place, we loved the decor and showing the history of the building as a fire station. It was match day but we were fine to get in for lunch time. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The food came quickly and was good. I had a fish finger sandwich with chunky fries and my partner had the burger with chunky fries. The only downside of my food was the curry sauce which was just so runny it was like water! However everything else we had was tasty.
Kelly H — Google review
Nice little treat out. Food was fantastic, though a word of warning, the shepards pie is HOT but delicious. Only reason I put 4 stars for food was the tinned custard (not that I would complain about that, I like tinned custard) otherwise everything was great. Would definitely recommend a visit.
Kenneth L — Google review
We booked a table for 11.45, which we did not really need to do, for such an early time. But it is highly recommended to do so if you are going to see a show at the empire, which is about 1 to 2 minutes' walk. The service was really warm and friendly. We both had the fish and chips that came with mushy peas and a small jug of curry sauce and small pot of tartar sauce. The chips were good, as were the peas and curry sauce, I did not try the tartar sauce. I thought the fish was very nice with a light and crispy batter. The only thing that spoilt the fish was, on a personal note, that too much salt had been put on top of it in the kitchen.
Derek B — Google review
Popped in tonight on a mini pub crawl in the area. We arrived right on the call for last orders, but the friendly bar team accommodated us. Samson Smooth on draft was lovely. So was the welcome, even though my mate and the bar staff reckoned I look like Jeremy Clarkson. Nice place, plenty indoor and outdoor seating and a selection of beers/ales to please most. Quite possibly the best selection... In the world.

Great night out to see Phil Collins Tribute. Awesome band 😎

Paid £7.35 for a pint of Clwb Tropica. Couldn’t help but comment to the barmaid that the price was about 300 miles south of what it should be. She couldn’t disagree. Nice bar, but the beer prices are comedy.

Thoroughly enjoyed my meal tonight tho the posset wasn't a posset. I wasn't charged for it. However I really want to compliment the waitress, she was so helpful and attentive even though she was run off her feet.

The Ivy House, located on Worcester Terrace, is a popular local pub in Sunderland. It offers outdoor seating and a variety of guest ales. The open kitchen serves some of the best pub food in the city. The bar features interesting beers on tap and in bottles, as well as an array of cask ales and craft beers. This Victorian Ale House is frequented by locals and students alike, offering an amazing atmosphere for a chilled night out with friends.
First time visiting today and the food was delicious. We ordered a Gerty burger – A slow cooked pulled pork pattie topped with a slice of black pudding, blue cheese and garnished with rocket and a Lindsay - beef pattie with smoky bacon & sautéed balsamic onions, topped with a slice of cheddar. Both were delicious and the triple cooked chips were 10/10. Friendly staff and nice music playing 🎶 🎸 🍔

Tried the Munich Pizza, was nice and tasty. Lovely thin crispy base! The waiter/bar man was horrific, poor service and bad attitude.

We really like here and the fact it’s open during the day as we often have meeting in Sunderland. Loads of vegan options on the menu Great Sunday dinner too There’s something to appeal to everyone

We love the burgers and homemade triple cooked chips but the pizzas looked very nice also. Great vibe and super bands on at the weekend. A hidden gem of Sunderland.

Really really good pub... not the cheapest by any means but you definitely get what you pay for. Good staff who know their stuff too, and a lovely exterior and setting... if I lived in the terraces here I'd probably be in most nights!

If you're looking for a place to have a good time in Sunderland, Life of Riley is the perfect spot. The atmosphere is friendly and lively, and the prices are really reasonable. The staff are always willing to help out, and there's usually plenty of entertainment on offer – from live music to bar games. And if you're looking for something more substantial than just a drink, Life of Riley has some great meals on offer too.
We had a blast in Life of Riley, we got 2cocktails for £10.45p. Each they have to be the same but thats no bother. If there's a group of yous you could all get different and then swap them with ya friends

BOTTOMLESS BRUNCH 🥂 We went here for bottomless brunch last week, I've been to a good few b.b here and Newcastle and I've got to say, drink wise this was the best! No waiting till you've drank your drink till you could order another at one point i had 3 infront of me, the waitress was lovely very polite and quick at service. Food wasn't bad either its an actual meal and not just picky bits. The drink selection is great cocktails/bottles/spirits and they were strong. Definitely recommend this place, its more than worth the money we're looking to go again soon as!

The pub offers a wide selection of food, ales, spirits, and wine while also hosting live entertainment.

We had our evening wedding function at The Peacock and we couldn't have asked for a better venue! Start to finish Cindy was absolutely fantastic and made sure we were well looked after, she did a fantastic job with the room and so many people complimented the lovely venue we had chosen. The staff members were all really friendly and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. So glad we chose The Peacock for our wedding!

A great family-run pub in a beautiful building. It's probably my favourite pub in Sunderland. The atmosphere is always welcoming. There's usually live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The beer selection is decent including a few cask options and the prices are fair. I still need to try the food so I can't rate that but people always recommend it, particularly the Sunday lunches.

Called for food & drink before going to a show at The Fire Station next door. Great menu, not expensive & quality food. Drinks not over-priced. Friendly & helpful bar staff. Got a little noisy when away fans began chanting prior to going to match at Stadium of Light. No trouble though & would definitely recommend a visit.

Absolutely disgraceful place, my son and daughter in law turned up to Bar Justice only to be told the bailiffs came in mid week, apparently bar staff turned up and had no idea!. It's not even about the money or whether they get it back...just have the disancy to let people know. What kind of reputable buisness owner would do that, no contact whatsoever my son and daughter in law were left standing outside, bearing in mind she has 3 weeks to go visible upset, with food, balloons etc. Hang your head in shame Bar Justice. Shout out to Angelos Resteraunt, who helped our family. And to Sams bar where the shower finally took place.

A group of 8 of us did the cocktail masterclass as part of my hen do. Daniel the bartender was great - really attentive and friendly. It was a nice day so he even offered to do the class outside which worked well. Excellent value for money and we had a great time!

Love this bar. The selection of drinks is great and not too expensive. Service is always great from here even when it's busy. I had my hen do here also in the private function room upstairs where they do cocktail making classes, which I would highly recommend.

Ok for an early evening beer or as a place to meet. Not sure I'd want to spend the night there. In the past I've seen blatant drug use and and a rather unsavoury crowd using the place. That said, my last visit was very pleasant, and a far more sensible clientele. Juries out on this one, hopefully it's turned around.

The Sunderland Empire Theatre is a grand Edwardian theater that hosts a variety of shows including musicals, comedy, pantomime, music, and dance performances. It stands as an iconic cultural beacon in Sunderland with over a century of history and has seen famous names like Charlie Chaplin and The Beatles grace its stage. With a capacity of 2,200, it is considered one of the best theaters in the UK and has hosted major productions including musicals and operas.
Saw Hamilton here. The theatre was beautiful and all the staff really friendly and helpful. Ability to order drinks and snacks from your seat using QR code was a nice feature. The show was amazing as was the venue!
Gary H — Google review
Really nice theatre, smaller than the ones I am used to going to. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Prices for drinks and snacks were high but this is as expected when visiting a theatre, you can order for drinks to come to your seat but we didn't bother on this occasion.
Vikki F — Google review
First visit. Beautiful exterior. All the staff from behind the bar to management were lovely, helpful and polite. Seats were comfortable (especially in comparison to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle). There's a good range drinks and snacks, with seat service available. Production was great. Inside also appears to be well maintained. A great evening.
BROON B — Google review
Very ornate old building. Toilets were fine. A queue as usual for the ladies as you'd expect anywhere there's a show. We had a whole row to ourselves so could spread our legs out but if we'd been limited to our seats, the legroom would have been a little uncomfortable for us. We were in the upper circle in the lower numbers. We had an ok view though many parts were on the right side of the stage, which we couldn't see because of the boxes, so thankfully, they videoed it and it was up on two large screens above the actors. Some people did move further back as their seats were on the front row of the upper circle which had a safety bar in front of them which obstructed their view.
R P — Google review
Just been to watch the friends musical and I adored it. The musical itself was amazing and I had no issues with the theatre at all. One thing that isn’t the greatest is the prices of food and drink but that’s a usual with things now so it didn’t bother us. The seats were amazing in the upper circle and it wasn’t even expensive to sit where we did. £15 each for our seats for that show. The staff were amazing as I lost my phone and they managed to phone my parents through my medical id on my phone and kept it until I found it. My program booklet got ruined from someone’s drink and the woman happily gave me a fresh one after I showed her and I was over the moon. The program was £4 but I wasn’t bothered. Highly recommend here as I haven’t been in years and wasn’t let down at all.
Lily W — Google review
What can I say. What a breath of Magic from Start to Finish. we were swept away into Berts Chalk pictures on a wild and breezy adventure. What a performance. First time we have been to the Empire theatre. We will most certainly be back.
Christopher M — Google review
It's a classic 'theatre' comfy seats, small and intimate. The interval 'sustenance' app is a great idea, and worked well for some folk around us. My techno-incompetence meant I couldn't load and master it, and because everyone else was using it, there was no queue for the (very expensive) ices. Also some folks interval snacks arrived 10 minutes into the second half. We to see Hamilton with our daughter and granddaughter's who know the show well. It was a great performance lots of energy and engagement. All in all a great night out. Another possible negative the bag check was perfunctory. The theatre emptied at the end of the show in under 10 minutes, and we were in the front of the stalls. Lengthy queue for the merchandise, but that's not why we went!
Conrad C — Google review
What a beautiful theatre with a very spooky history. An excellent place to see Inside No. 9 Live which was fantastic. Parking is very convenient at the local shopping centre although the lack of pay stations caused a massive hold-up before getting away. (Not the theatre's fault!).

Located in the historic Deptford and Ayre's Quay area of Sunderland, The Saltgrass is a traditional pub under new management. Away from the city center, it offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere with covered outdoor areas for events and shows. Situated near Riverside Park, it's easily accessible by Go North East buses. Despite some slow service issues, visitors praise the delicious Sunday lunch and express a willingness to return.
'The Salty'..! Always knew it as a shipyards pub with the famous drinking fountain outside. After the shipbuilding closed the area got very quiet. Now under the same management as the Kings arms just up the bank, the Saltgrass is a lovely historic pub. Cool atmosphere and amazing outside space. If you're in town and fancy a drink in a 'non-chain' pub get down the salty and see what Sunlun's really like!

Our function was Sunday afternoon in the beer garden .and great atmosphere with our guests. However, the pub itself was empty. I think this was due to no food been available

Tried one of their sundau dinners today, no booking just showed up. Dinner was served within 20 minutes of being there no complaints about service! Beef dinner and a pork one, both very tasty but small portions of meat. Had to pay extra for cauliflower cheese and only got one little dish of veg to share ( 1 piece of broccoli each) . Yorkshire was dry but the roasties were the best I have ever tasted really nice!! Lush gravy plenty of flavour in veg aswell. No complaints except portion size 7.5/10 They have a nice beer garden and sell clwb tropicana! Used to do 2 printers and have a dj outside not sure if they still do now however. Not a good location as its a taxi to anywhere else.

The National Glass Centre, built in 1998 at a cost of approximately 17 million, is a stylish and modern facility that celebrates the history of glass making. It features five galleries with ever-changing exhibitions showcasing stunning glass sculptures. Visitors can witness live demonstrations of glass making and blowing in the dedicated studio and purchase the results at the onsite souvenir shop. Sunderland's rich glass-making heritage is highlighted through its global companies like Pyrex and Hartley Woods, making it an ideal location for this center.
Our first visit here and was pleasantly surprised at the glassware and other exhibitions to look at.Its free to visit and it had a good glass blowing demonstration worth seeing. The cafe was not busy so we ordered two cheese toasties and pots of tea. The tea arrived within minutes, but we waited 40 minutes for the food which we had to rush eating it to get to the glass demonstration. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Carolyn B — Google review
We took an unplanned trip to the National glass Centre, which didn't go down well initially with my son... but actually we all came away enjoying it more than some of us thought we would! On arrival, we parked just outside in the main car park, parking cost was not overly expensive (£3 all day or you could pay hourly as well). Entrance to the Centre is also free, my daughter wanted to look at the animal exhibition so we headed straight there first. We had a good wonder round and watched the glass blowing and glass flame work session. The centre also has some little activities for kids to do, and you can borrow an activity backpack to keep them busy which is a great idea.
Andrew C — Google review
This was a fascinating venue to explore, delving into Sunderland's history as a glass-making hub! The procedures of how the glass was made is detailed along with exhibits of the old material, photographs give a glimpse of these pieces being worked on too. Staff even provided a demonstration of how to make the glass now using the tools and burning furnaces, different objects such as glass plates and bowls are displayed too!
K. P — Google review
Recommend to check it out if your around the area. The gallery is a bit small to me and the contemporary art place was shut for change of galleries during my visit. Clean toilets
Kin O — Google review
We stopped by for an unplanned trip on a rainy day. Lots has been added since I last visited in the early 2000s. The demonstrations were very good and the glass artists very informative

Exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff. Both demonstration were fascinating both of which were kind enough to answer questions from my children. Cafe was good value with lovely views of the docks, highly recommend.

Excellent place to visit. My little boy (Age 5) was asking how you curve glass so brought him to here & watched the demo on making a glass vase. He loved it and there was lots of other things for him to do here like jigsaws, drawing, playing with blocks. Great place for learning and having fun

The Stadium of Light, located in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, is a purpose-built stadium primarily used for hosting Sunderland AFC home matches, occasional international games, and concerts. With a seating capacity of nearly 50,000 spectators, it is the fifth-largest stadium in England. The venue was constructed in 1997 and expanded in 2002. It serves as the home ground for Sunderland AFC and has hosted various football matches including those featuring the England national team.
Had a great evening out at the stadium for the opening match of the women's rugby world cup England v Sunderland. It's a nice stadium, great seats and a good amount of toilets.
Suzanne — Google review
Great local team ground but the stadium has seen better days. Pretty run down, would not recommend for hospitality or functions unless you’re a die hard Sunderland fan.
Ali G — Google review
The venue itself is perfect. Unfortunately, the stewards inside helping you find your seats were absolutely useless. Guiding us to the wrong area, being told we had gone in through the wrong turnstiles, directing us back outside and telling us to go in the wrong turnstile which would have taken us even further away from our seats. Eventually, someone took is to roughly the correct area and finally a very nice English gent who was extremely pleasant and helpful pointed out our seats. Most of the stewards need to learn where they are and some customer service skills.
Alan M — Google review
Iconic stadium, great atmosphere. The stairs up to the away section have humorous comments on each flight which are needed to supplement your oxygen dept when ascending. Don't attempt if you have a heart condition use lifts!Food ok but beer poor.
G T — Google review
A world class modern stadium. Lots of work invested this summer into improvements, such as a Michelin star chef hospitality option, new art work all around the turnstiles and a seven figure transformation of the upper concourses. A must visit for fans of English football and the Premier League.

Additionally, the area boasts top-rated educational facilities such as schools and colleges. Great open space with something for everyone. Beautiful views and walks, kids play area, grassed seating amphitheatre and plenty of free parking.

Herrington Country Park is a compelling blend of nature, public art, family-friendly recreation, and heritage—set against an impressive backdrop of Penshaw Monument. It’s a great spot for walking, wildlife watching, playing, or relaxing—though some caution is advised during busy events or if dogs are present. Herrington Country Park is well-loved for good reason—thanks to its blend of history, beauty, art, and community vibrancy. Just be prepared, and it’s a day out that's hard to forget.

Nice big park with nice walks and lakes full of posh ducks, geese and regular common ducks. That aren't owned by the king. And odd big black birds that sat in the trees too far away to identify.

Beautiful clean park located on the outskirts of Sunderland. Ideal for families. Also at the park is a lovely restaurant with great food but beware there could be a queue to sit and eat inside. The park itself is huge, the play park is near the top, half way along there is a skate park and an open top amphitheatre where I expect small shows can be put on, down the bottom is a sizable lake with ducks, geese and swans . The whole place was clean and a pleasure to take kids and grandkids to. I will definitely go there again.

Grannie Annies is a charming spot to grab some refreshments, especially during the summer when you can bask in the sun on their elevated balcony with a view of Roker Beach. The menu may be limited, but it offers classic pub options. While some patrons rave about dishes like the steak and ale pie, others have found certain items underwhelming. However, there are vegetarian options available at reasonable prices.
We really did enjoy the visit. Everything was amazing.. from the view of the beach to the quality of service. The bar is locally very popular so can be pretty busy.. especially during weekends. Highly recommended anyway. PS: I've never mentioned toilets matters yet.. but those barrels are witty :-)

Fancied a full English breakfast and this did the trick. Perfectly cooked and nicely presented. Loved the sausages. Very friendly staff, great atmosphere and perfectly positioned to watch the sea.

I visited here with a couple friends we didn't know what to expect or if it would have options for me since I am a vegetarian (no meat or fish). Their prices were pretty good I ordered a goats cheese tart which was a perfect size chips were very good. We ordered a desserts in a meal getting a biscuit sundae waited a little while for it to arrive but was tasty. The decorations are unique with a lot to look at.

Great bar in a great location. They have a great outdoor seating area that looks right onto the beach. The pub is dog friendly downstairs and has an upstairs area as well. Went here with my Son for dinner before going to the theatre and it was excellent! The young lady who greeted us & looked after us was totally outstanding! A good choice of food on the menu and they catered brilliantly to my rare food allergy. Food was not only cooked to perfection but absolutely burst with flavour and service was efficient!! I look forward to returning soon!
Fr. R — Google review
Definitely a cool mexican restaurant with nice funky interior. Food was okay, nothing really blew me away, however, i think each taco was carefully thought out and had a nice blend of flavours. My favourite taco the chicken one and the thai beef. Trio of salsas as a side was nice but again nothing special. Did have to wait a little for our table but didn’t really mind.
Jennifer D — Google review
I thought I’d missed my chance to go here but I’m glad it’s reopened. - Nice margaritas - Grilled peach and mozzarella salad was an absolute treat - I would have preferred a thinner slice/smaller chunk of fish in the ceviche - the tacos felt light on toppings. The meat was cooked well. The miso duck leg was my favourite, but none of the tacos blew me away. All in all, a bit meh, but a good option for the area.
Dollar R — Google review
Great food as always, I’ve been a frequent visitor since 2019, great food again tonight, got in early before the theatre rush. Service on point, drinks good. 3 tacos each and some lovely padron peppers shared, a little bit of confusion over the final bill as it’s restaurant week in Sunderland but nobody mentioned this. So we expected 3 tacos for £13 which is the usual Tuesday deal. But never mind, all was sorted by a friendly and proactive manager who was keen to resolve the issue very quickly and efficiently. Sometimes service can be judged on how a situation is resolved and this was a great example of customer service by one senior member of staff. A great restaurant as always. This may sound a little strange, but sometimes there is be need to be defensive, someone might be trying to do the right thing.
Andy F — Google review
Cool Mexican tapas place with ok food. I feel like the idea of the place is better than the execution. It’s lovely inside with a good atmosphere, but the food was meh. We got the salsa and tortilla chips for starters, and I got a range of vegetarian tacos whilst my partner got the meat tacos. I didn’t particularly like any of the vegetarian tacos, the seitan was undercooked and the texture was awful. I think using different meat alternatives would make it better. My partner liked the pork tacos, but the rest were just okay. The tempura broccoli was awful really, just broccoli coated in heaps of soggy batter. We really enjoyed the smashed garlic potatoes though, they were spectacular. The salsa and tortilla chips were good too. Overall, the sides were mostly great and the tacos were just ok. The atmosphere and decorations are lovely inside though. Service was pretty good too.
Louise R — Google review
Really, really good food. Cocktails were excellent and interesting, and the service was spot on. The soft shell taco with pulled beef was unreal! Really good vegan options too. Only thing I'd not order again was the guac -£6 for a few nachos and guac when you can get more chips or another taco for less!
Goose U — Google review
Such a cozy atmosphere, on a lovely street, food is tasty and being served as tapas means you can try loads of different things and they are all fantastically presented. Slightly on the expensive side, but a fantastic local business worth supporting 🩷
Veronica W — Google review
Third time visiting yesterday, basically tried the full menu by this point. Can't recommend this place enough. Food, drinks, service and atmosphere have been faultless every time. Impressive 3:2 meat:vegan taco ratio, without skimping on vegan options for sides and extras. In my experience, it's rare that a restaurant that has so many meat options that they execute vegan dishes to an equally high standard (my partner is vegan). The tacos themselves are well and truly the main event with each encompassing bold flavours, with every element balanced - no flavour or component being lost in the mix. The menu is definitely Mexican fusion, with alot of Asian inspiration, but we're here for it. We're always impressed, and will continue visiting from Durham when we can - it's worth the journey!

Great place promoting individual eatery outlets. Live bands on and a good vibe. Maybe its a bit loud for some but I had a pint of neck oil and a Korean corn dog for under 15 quid. The food was from sogi and gogi (sorry about the spelling) was exactly what I needed. People in their were friendly and its dog friendly so that's a bonus if ya love dergs. Dog was a bit melt out through battery but the times were good. Highly recommended 👌.

Thought this was a great place. Plenty of individual food and drink outlets, spread over two floors, surrounding common-area seating a bit like you get at Oktoberfest, with floor-standing space heaters keeping the cold at bay. You can mix and match whatever you fancy and then pick a spot you like. It's also dog friendly. We popped in here for lunch after a great walk on the beach with our pooch. We were there in January and kept our outdoor clothing on whilst eating, as it was still a bit chilly inside. The space heaters are gas-powered and I can't help wondering if a switch to something else would be more environmentally friendly (overhead radiant heaters powered from a wind-farm would be great), but you can't have everything! Certainly recommend the place, despite my eco-conscience clouding the issue.

Well worth a visit. It's a cracking place. Seats throughout and I believe there's 9 vendors from pizza to Greek and burgers. There's a number of bars. Something for everyone. The food is fantastic. Staff are lovely and live music. There's two types of people in this world. Those who have been to stack... And those who have yet to experience stack.

Visited today for lunch with my Brother and Boyfriend who hadn't visited before. Would highly recommend as there is such a wide range of foods and options definitely something for everyone. Loved that my Brother and Boyfriend could choose from one stall and I as a veggie could choose something else and we could still eat together. I had a veggie burger from Brack Burger which was delicious and one of the best I have ever had it was well cooked and absolutely stuffed with gerkins. Very generous portions and a good price. The pager system for food means you can sit relax and just wait until called instead of having to stand and wait at the stall. Loved sitting upstairs and watching the sea plus superb for people watching. The live music and singer was so talented and a joy to listen to. The place is dog friendly so bonus cute doggos. Staff were friendly chatty and professional. So friendly as well. Had such a lovely time we didn't want to leave haha. Music can be a bit loud downstairs at times. Toilets are clean and well maintained. Would be happy to go in alone. Fabulous place to meet friends. .

Great place for meeting up with friends. They have a great selection of places to order food from. They give you a little device to take to your table, and it lights up when your food is ready to pick up. Unfortunately, we had already eaten before we got here, so we didn't try anything, but what we saw looked amazing. They had entertainment on which was canny (a singing duo), but you could still have a conversation if you liked. We are definitely going back to try the food, and we've booked tickets for a tribute act coming up later in the year. Would highly recommend this place to family and friends.

Booked and seated quickly, great atmosphere as it was buzzing, although there was tables free even at 7pm on a Friday night. The decor is very chic, with a large tree in the middle of one area and a partition with metal rebar floor to ceiling with plant pots nestled in between. The order was taken relatively quickly and food served relatively quickly also. The Korean Chicken starter was a very good portion and extremely tasty, then we had the Chicken Hanging Kebabs. Every bit of my chicken had an unchewable bit like gristle but my wife's were fine, so maybe I got unlucky, so knocked a star off for this. We were charged for food individually instead of the 2 course for £22.50 but they rectified it for us. As we're were finishing up live music started which is a pleasant surprise. All in all definitely would visit again when visiting Subderland Empire Theatre.

The atmosphere was lovely and it was so aesthetic even from the outside. The table was with 10 people and the seating was still very spacious for us all. I ordered a coke and it was £3.75. The starter came out with reasonable time. I ordered a ‘pil pil’, seasoned fries and Korean chicken. The pil pil was lovely however the sourdough bread was burnt and had a small piece of tissue on it. I let my waitress know and she immediately rectified the situation. She got me new fresh hot bread and apologised for the accident. However my Korean chicken didn’t arrive on time but when I told Grace about the situation she quickly brought out a fresh plate of Korean chicken. She was so attentive to the needs of our big table. She made sure we had jugs of cold ice water and she ensure we had enough condiments for our food. I didn’t order a main as my 2 starters and seasoned fries was very much more than enough. I was stuffed by the end of my food. (Thank God for stretchy trousers). My food came up to £23.25 and for the amount of food and the great service it was worth it. I would recommend this to anyone as they had many different options for everyone. Examples being noodles, katsu chicken curry, burgers and small plates. On average each person spent between £20-£30. Special shout-out to our waitress Grace for the great customer service. Easy to locate and get to as it was a about a 10 minute walk from the Sunderland metro station.

A great pre Chicago/Sunderland Empire meal at The Botanist. Food and drinks were really excellent as were the professional and attentive staff. A chain venue with a local feel service.
Keith S — Google review
Really really really bad. I understand that it was the end of the night and the bar staff wanted to go home, but to repeatedly say “I’m so sick, I hate that people are still coming in before closing” followed by “if one more person come in I’m throwing a glass off their head” and complaining that a member of staff hadn’t turned in tonight making their night a bad one is pretty disgusting behavior. Even when called out on it he continued to complain and made two miserable looking cocktails at full price, totally shameful. Can’t recommend at all. Door staff were friendly at least. Just look at how bad these cocktails look! If still serving drinks then why be so aggressive? Normally a nice place to visit. It’s no wonder Sunderland doesn’t keep nice bars 19/07/2025 at approx 11pm

The sound from the band was also excellent so we all had a fantastic time and would definitely go back. Parking was also not a problem.

I went in The Stumble Inn before a Sunderland home match and it was a good atmosphere, it was busy but easy to get served. I only had a drink so can't comment on food. I would recommend it :-)

Great bar, great management, great staff. It's lost none of the atmosphere from back in the late 80s when it was my student haunt as the Royalty, but it's in good nick and has live bands on now too. Get yourself in on a Saturday for the bands or there's karaoke one midweek night if you want to sing.

Love coming here, laid back friendly atmosphere, love coming here for food, for a couple drinks, game of pool and darts and the quiz night.

The Royalty Theatre is a historic theater that emanates history from the seats, to the lounge and bar. The cast do a great job in staging plays, with lovely little theater. In addition, there is often music playing in the intervals. This makes for a very enjoyable experience. Additionally, the theater promotes local productions by providing opportunities for actors and crew to share their work with audiences.
Went to see the panto Cinderella written by Jamie Lowes. What a fantastic night. Both adults and children were laughing throughout. The actors were so good and keeping the jokes and story moving. The dancers and dance routines were very good too. Overall excellent performances. We will be back next year. Well done to all involved.

Gave my mum and friends a lift here to a performance which they loved. We have been numerous times to see Kinky Boots and Shirley Valentine to name a couple. Both amazing shows and good to support a local theatre.

First time at the Royalty Theatre and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I saw Wait Until Dark which was very well performed, I especialy enjoyed Gloria's performance. The venue was of course a little dated but great all the same. All the staff were happy to help and very nice.

Lovely theatre with a warming glow when you enter. The staff are ever so friendly and helpful. BUT be warned, there is terrible parking restrictions if you go. These are very expensive in the University car parks. The shopping centre is also expensive. Sunderland does not welome motorists!!! Best plan would be to hire a mini coach if a few going. I won't drive there again!!!!

The Royalty Theatre is a long-established Sunderland institution and, unfortunately, it has been way too long between my visits. This venue is renowned for hosting amateur dramatics but I stopped by for the launch of a book. Locally based Frances Mackintosh's debut novel 'Coming For You' was launched at the Royalty.

Great little venue. Passionate staff, and sweets, drinks and merchandise very reasonably priced. Comfortable and easy to get to. Just back from the panto. Usually a proper cash-grab in other places, but a nice affordable evening out.

The refurbishment of Holy Trinity Church in Sunderland has been a success, with the craft market offering numerous affordable goods. Life of Pie served delicious and reasonably priced pies. This Georgian church, restored by The Churches Conservation Trust, now serves as a community cultural space. It hosts a variety of events and employs welcoming staff members. The interior restoration highlights the building's history, showcasing its beauty. This Grade listed structure is highly recommended for visitors seeking a great tour guided by friendly staff members.
This was my 1st ever visit to this historic building A very beautiful church

Great atmosphere and an absolutely fantastic building, renovated to an exceptionally high standard. Now converted into a communal space and hosting a jazz club at my visit. The sound quality could be better. That is my only criticism. This place is a must visit and worthy of patronage. There seems to be a good selection of jazz gigs coming up not to mention Shakespeare. I'd recommend a visit.

Tremendous arts and music venue, currently trying to establish its long term future. Please support it if you can. If you get the chance to see mens choir Compass Acapella and/or Ladies Choir Tyneside Acapella there then do so. 🕯️ Candlelight: Vivaldi's Four Seasons, by Northern String Quartet. Many will have seen adverts recently about this 1 hour show in our region. Advice: GET TICKETS! We went (13/10/23) to see this show at Trinity Church, Sunderland. It was entirely lit with over 3,000 candles as a backdrop, to listen to these highly skilled musicians, who play throughout the UK and internationally . The ethereal ambiance of candlelight added to this magical and enchanting experience. Don’t miss out - book your tickets. You will not be disappointed. EXCELLENT! 👏👏👏 (PS thank me later …)

Pub
The Ship Isis, a Sunderland pub named after the Egyptian goddess, underwent a stunning restoration in 2011. This three-story Victorian pub boasts decadent lounge rooms adorned with stained-glass windows, art nouveau friezes, and ornate wood furnishings. The bar area is beautifully decorated with period lighting. The staff are known for their helpfulness and the constantly rotating drinks on tap ensure that each visit is unique.
Always been a decent pub but the beer selection and quality of food is getting better and better. Always rotating keg lines to suit every taste plus a lot of craft cask, and also cans. The food is amazing. Everything. I have tried the pizzas, chicken, burrata salad and different types of the loaded fries and they are all out of this world. My favourite place to eat in town right now.
Christian R — Google review
Visited with my boyfriend and Brother. It was very busy but managed to find a seat. A beautiful historical pub, very traditional but with a bit of flair to it. The staff were friendly, chatty, knowledgeable and professional. Very helpful when I didn't know what to choose. The lady gave me a few tastes of ales to find what I would like. Found a few I loved. It can get quite busy but it has a good atmosphere. We didn't try the food but will return to try it. A wide drink selection including alcoholic slushies which was fun. Would be happy to go in alone. Good place to meet friends. Toilets were clean and well maintained.
Angela L — Google review
Charming traditional pub with decent street food. The service is lovely. My pizza was burnt on a lot of the crust. You can try to argue it was char, but it crumbled to ash. The unburnt parts were OK but I didn’t love the dough. The fried chicken was juicy. The breading was light and tasted like chip shop batter. I couldn’t notice any spice or seasoning (if there was any) but the sauces were packed full of flavour so made up for it. The batter fell off the tenders so I ate it separately from the chicken.

Great pub. Absolutely fantastic pizza. Cracking service. Great company. Can't recommend this place enough, first visit today (to @wild_firepizza not the Isis) and didn't disappoint. Pizza's cooked perfectly with delicious toppings including the locally made B-Sting hot honey (Durham), Block and Bottle Nduja (Newcastle), Fat Unicorn Salami (Sunderland) and Properoni (UK). Fries were good too. See you again soon.
James B — Google review
Constantly changing casks and kegs along with regular lager for those not as crafty. Hard to beat wild fire pizza. Combo deal on a Tuesday for £10 is a delight but their normal menu is also very hard to beat. Great pub environment, old school feel to the establishment works tremendously well. Often lively but always excellent quick service.

Another CAMRA Good Beer Guide pub in the 2023 edition that Casta found. Lovely bar area with a lounge on the other side of the entrance hall. There is a rear patio as well. The only downside on our visit was the live band in the upstairs venue. The downstairs juke box was loud but the base from upstairs made the ceiling a giant woofer. Like bad feedback. The beer however was excellent. I took a Three Kings brewery Americal Pale called Rain Shadow. Lots of real ale choice plus draught cider.

This bar/pub is head and shoulders (think Quinn stood with Steed) above any other in Sunderland. A brilliant selection of drinks. Cask and craft beers. Ciders a plenty. Also the food is amazing!! Pretty cool place. We parked up at the stadium at walked a short distance there is parking outside though. Very accessible place and I can imagine on match day or a warm weekend it will have a superb atmosphere. I'd like to see a few more food options, but enough to cater to many pallets. Great place. Got vibes like the stack but better. Live music, great scran, locally brewed beers and a bit more of an upmarket vibe without being pretentious. Staff were friendly and the pizza i got from 'scream for pizza' was lovely. I've been to the OG in Jesmond and this one does not disappoint so good on them for not selling out. Lots of drinks to choose from and even the bouncers are lush. Highly recommended 👌.

Very nice spot. The brickwork brings to mind hip spots in Belgium or Holland. One observation: Pit Pony, the taproom, should offer some local beers. Budvar, Erdinger were on tap, as were some of the usual generic brews that can be had in any standard pub. But nothing from any of the great breweries in Sunderland or elsewhere in the northeast. A situation that should be rectified.

Spent a good few hours on a Sunday afternoon in and around this new addition to the rejuvenation of Sunderland. The weather did not help the outdoor seating but each table came with a heater, there are plenty of places to eat and drink with lots of choices. We made our base in the pit pony bar which is warm and well decorated. We also had a great pizza while watching the live music. When we return it will be an Italian Sunday roast I think

One of its notable highlights is the Keel Line, an embedded strip of inscribed granite commemorating the 8,102 ships built in Sunderland since 1786.
Great walking around the town today seeing all the stalls getting ready for the food and drink festival this weekend... And the Euros are about to get going. Homemade samosas were fantastic! It's looking really nice around here. The botanist and the Tavern are both lovely. The botanist is probably the bigger of the two with more seating. I prefer the choice of lagers in the Tavern as peroni and hells are both delicious. Haven't eaten at the botanist yet but will be trying the hanging kebabs soon. The Moroccan flat bread and belly pork starter at the Tavern were excellent. The bad news is M&S leaving the Town. This will obviously effect footfall. M&S should be ashamed of themselves deserting their loyal customers, many of whom are elderly and won't want to try and find a bus for a 20 mile round trip ! It just proves these companies couldn't care less about serving their communities and always put profits and shareholders first..

Honestly one of my favourite pubs on earth. I a world of chain pubs that prioritise eating, this is just a dying breed of proper, old English pubs. Real coal fire, all original fixtures and fittings, and friendly staff/punters. I also love the old cathode ray tube TV above the door. This pub is like being transported back in time.

Popped into the Museum Vaults after the opening game of the Women's Rugby World cup. Staff were super friendly as were the clientele. Very traditional old pub, plenty of beers on tap. Lovely atmosphere. Toilets and carpets a bit rough but didn't detract from a great couple of hours.

Always a fantastic experience. Good beer, friendly service and a proper old style boozer. As good now as it was when I first visited in 1985!
Alan M — Google review
Was a little bit disappointed with here as it was recommended, but in fairness that may have been due to the high standards of elsewhere we visited in Sunderland. The place definitely has a lot of character with lots of old Sunderland FC memorabilia on walls and tables. The disappointment came with the beers. Only one in tap when we went in as it had not long opened then one added a bit later. To be fair it was two new beers so not terribly bad. Barman was chatty and helpful offering some pub choices that were out of the way and we had not considered.
Sean H — Google review
Just a few doors down from The Ship Isis we found another CAMRA 2023 Good Beer Guide pub. A traditional two room pub, a front bar with a lounge beyond and a rear beer patio beyond that. Only two real ales, a Dirty Leeds from Elland brewery. Casta had a pint from Firebrick brewery. Heatwave..very un-apt as a cold drizzle set in on this miserable August evening. We got wet going home. Really like this bar. Great local's vibe. One flat screen TV had the Friday footie on plus a small 1970' tv...no idea these could still receive and play a signal.

Bags of character and quality SAFC memorabilia. A real open fire. Barman on my visit was down to Earth and chatty. I'd like a little more choice of craft or real ale on tap, but they had a few decent craft options in a fridge. They should make it more obvious as I didn't see it at first.

Visitors rave about the friendly staff who go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience, whether it's guiding patrons through vegan beer options or delivering drinks right to your table.
Me and my boyfriend visited as a late birthday celebration. Straight away you notice their unique furniture/decor and huge selection of local drinks. We ordered a pizza and cheesy garlic bread, 2 beers, and juice, and it was INCREDIBLE. All of the dough is fresh, cooked pretty much in front of you, and really cheap for the quality of it! This is the first food place where I’ve walked in and instantly felt at ease, the lady working (I think called Claire?) was so so lovely, she told us about the events they have on, one of them being a comedy night which sounds really good and we hope to be back for! Diego’s is named after their dog, and you’ll find most stuff in his name/decorated with his face on which adds a cute homely vibe to the place. We will DEFINITELY be back, this is going to be our new go-to place! We highly, highly recommend!!

On a side note the bar is named after the owners dog and there are some great paintings of him decorating the walls.

Oh, and I can't forget the special sausage treats from the doggie menu - everybody is catered for. There is a wide selection of drinks at very good prices. The staff were exceptionally friendly & helpful. Didn't try the food but the pizza we saw looked delicious! 10/10 would come again! Highly recommend supporting this independent business

Fantastic place to come with a good range of drinks and delicious pizzas! Dan, Mel and team are always really welcoming and highly accommodating when we bring staff and students here for various networking events. Everyone really enjoys coming here and I would highly recommend Diego's Joint!

What can I say about this place? Simply one of the best bars I’ve visited! The staff were incredibly helpful, especially when guiding me through the vegan beer options. There was a fantastic range to choose from, and the IDA selection was impressive. The Club Tropical on tap was a standout—crisp, refreshing, and bursting with flavor all the way to the last sip. Huge credit to the guys for their stellar service and incredible beer selection. Keep up the good work 👏

These Things Happen is a popular spot that opened in the old Harbour View Motors site in Roker. It has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors, with 10,000 people visiting within the first month. The venue offers late-night entertainment with DJ sets and serves breakfasts, brunches, and evening meals. Additionally, it recently opened an upstairs room for functions. The staff at These Things Happen are known for their exceptional service.
Great food and good vibes. If you are visiting the coast or looking for top quality food in the region, this place is a must visit. It serves up local fresh fish and local produce as specials to compliment the main menu. The Sunday lunches are top quality, hearty and also include a catch of the day fish dish option. The staff are very attentive and knowledgeable about what's available both with food and drinks. There's an impressive choice of beers/ales (some local) and nice wines. It's a great place that is dog and child friendly that's two or three minutes walk from the beach and one minute from the harbour.

*1/5 stars - A Total Letdown* Today we had the misfortune of dining at These Things Happen, and I'm still trying to process the utter disappointment. The original chef was great, came and sat with us, discussing our needs (we had a gluten free needs in our party) and it all sounded perfect. Then he left ......... The first options we chose, were unavailable, not a huge disaster we chose something else...... So we waited and waited and waited even though the lovely lad on the bar kieron (hope i spelled this correct. Sorry if I havent) had chased up our food a few times and even said it was coming now and one point, and there was still a wait. At this point it was well over an hour we had waited . Eventually it arrived , it looked beautiful and we were starving. 2 of us got the pan fried tuna. .... I cut into the middle of mine and it was raw. Now I know you can eat it like that. But thats not what I ordered . It was actually cold inside. I asked the other person to check his and it was the same and we defo didnt order sashimi. I couldnt believe how long this food had taken and it came undercooked so we sent it back. It had taken that long we didnt want to re order so 2 sat and ate and 2 sat with just a drink. The Service was so slow, then the chef appeared in the dining area. I thought oh hes came to speak to us.. no he walked straight past us and went to the bar, where he proceeded to chat and drink coffee. I found this so unprofessional and really rude . He finished his conversation and walked towards us again.. but sadly he was going to ignore us again. So I had to stop him and speak to him about the issue, he made lots of excuses and reasons why it wasn't his fault and it wasn't his menu while carrying on drinking his coffee. I'm sorry but..... either you can cook or you can't. It's not about menus, its about being able to cook to a certain standard to be employed as a chef surely??? I also felt his attitude was pretty poor too.. It has definitely put me off wanting to eat their again, even though I was there on my own a few weeks ago and had breakfast and it was amazing ( yes I wrote an amazing review ) I'd also like to add the place was empty so he wasn't rushed off his feet, there was no reasonable explanation for the food quality at all. He also left kieron to front everything himself which was unfair as he was spot on. My advice would be to avoid when this chef is in. I say chef very lightly.... I've included the pictures as to look at it looks really good . But looks can be deceiving. Well done kieron keep doing you 👏

Nice spacious place for sitting or standing at busier times like march days. Plenty of options for drinks on tap. Plenty of televisions throughout for sports. Great breakfast and a fast friendly service every time.

Thank you so much for a fantastic lunch today. We dropped in on a recommendation from a family member, and we were not disappointed, staff to the food was outstanding Big shout out to Keiron and the lovely ladies that helped make our experience worth while. And our lovely lady that took our photos for us, got one of her but it was a blurry one. Thank you so much, it was a special birthday treat for me, and I had a wonderful time.
Debra W — Google review
What a disappointment. We popped in this morning on a whim soon after they had opened for the day. The place was quiet and our large group was quickly seated. It took a while for somebody to come and get our drinks order. When this was taken, it was brought to us in dribs and drabs. One of our party had dietary requirements which had been told to the server when we placed our order. She was handed her non-diary coffee and so we were shocked when the server returned a few minutes later with a non-dairy coffee. Turns out the first, was actually dairy. Another member of our party then had to ask for their mocha which by this point hadn’t come. We sat a while before the food order was taken. Nothing complicated. The servers came out with only half the food order. Despite having three Mexican eggs, only one arrived. We sat waiting patiently, but nothing happened. Eventually we had to ask what had happened to the other two. Which eventually came ages after the rest of our party had finished. The food was a disappointment. £10 for tiny portions. It’s a shame because the other reviews looked good. But we will not be returning - there are better places around. The only redeeming factor was they knocked the two late food portions off the bill. But it still put a downer on what should have been a nice Sunday morning brunch with friends.

Tastiest brunch ever! I had the herbivore poached egg meal on eggy crumpets. Delicious!! I would have licked the plate if I'd been at home. I'd also recommend the French 75 cocktail if you want something light and zingy. Service was great and the staff were really lovely. So pleased this place has opened in my neighbourhood 😁 Update to my previous review. 5/5/25 Highly recommend the Donatello pizza. Roasted veg and goats cheese. Delicious!! Service faultless and staff very friendly and professional. Shout out to Olivia and Ciaran 😁

We called in to “These things Happen” for breakfast. I had full English and Mrs had the eggy crumpet. We were certainly not disappointed particularly in the locally sourced produce, bacon and sausage. This was served by pleasant happy staff. We will be back

My second time here what a let down, reduced food menu from previous. Things like black pudding missing off the breakfast and the breakfast rolls were small and basic. Certainly not like my first visit. I was bragging to my visiting guests from down south how good this place was, unknown to me this had changed.

The Minster Church of St Michael and All Angels and St Benedict Biscop (commonly known as Sunderland Minster) is the minster church of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. Formerly known as "St Michael & All Angels' Church", it served as the parish church for Bishopwearmouth, but was renamed in January 1998 after Sunderland was granted city status. In May 2007 the Minster ceased to be the parish church of Bishopwearmouth and village is now a suburb of Sunderland. Sunderland Minster is part of the Greater Churches Group.

This church is a very special one due to its community of people that attend it. The Sunday service is always a time where you can feel the peace and the positive energy that is transmitted through the minsters and shared with the group. After the service there is a social time, where people share a hot drink and prepare for the informal service, where mostly people from international communities attend and experience the service in a different way and have the chance to discuss the scripture as well. Furthermore, there are a lot of events happening in the church, such as fairs, music concerts, support events for refugees and asylum seekers, so I highly reccomend this place.

Angels Place has transformed into a vibrant hub for music lovers and locals alike. Once known as Hearts of Oak, it has shed its scruffy past to become a clean and inviting venue. With an eclectic mix of live bands, including local talent, the atmosphere is always buzzing—especially on special occasions like St. Patrick's Day when hearty Irish stew complements the lively performances. The bar offers a selection of well-kept beers at reasonable prices, though some patrons wish for more real ale options.

Proper old school biker/punk bar. It won't be to everyone's taste but I loved it. Great hosts and service. My ONLY disappointment would be the lack of a proper ale, but plenty of other choice.

Cool little cafe which is a music venue after hours. Came here because I thought there'd be cool people hanging out (there was 😂). But was surprised by how tasty the Turkish eggs were - the yogurt for the eggs was beautiful, similar to the dill flavour of tzatziki. I used the crusty bread to mop it all up and I could have kept going if I was given a second bowl 😂 My friend enjoyed her coffee and food too. Menu is all vegetarian and they have meat substitute items like sausages. A really cool vibe and mixed clientele. Bright and airy inside. One of the tables had a no laptops sign around lunch time hours but I didn't see the sign on other tables so I was confused - I think they don't want the window seats to be occupied by people working all day? Fair enough

Hard to believe we only attended Pop Recs for the first time at the weekend, as it's a place full of legend and we've missed some great things there. Anyway, we're put that right now. Great venue space, nice high stage, quality sound gear and excellent sound tech brought the best out of the acts we had gone to see.
Rob S — Google review
first time coming to pop recs for an event, honestly it wasn’t a comfortable venue at all. the pepsi was warm and we had to ask for ice, the only seating was extremely uncomfortable wooden benches reminiscent of primary school (except this was for hours) and it was so cold we had our coats on the whole time, even my nose was freezing. the toilets had a very odd smell. the concept of an independent venue hosting local artists is amazing but sadly it wasn’t exactly a comfortable night.
Zirkonia W — Google review
Popped in for the first time for a take out coffee. It was around 12.30 so it was very busy. Every table was full but this didn't seem to cause any issues to staff who were really helpful and quick. It was a little on the loud side for me (personal preference) with all of the talking Coffee was really tasty! And I'll be adding it to my list of good coffee places in Sunderland town centre. Plus I do love love the working class vibes and the ftm ethos 😂

Excellent food, service and atmosphere. I've eaten here a few times and the only problem I've ever had is with deciding what to order as I love too many of the options - I'll never forget trying their Turkish eggs for the first time; delicious. I've been to Pop Recs next door to watch live bands and few times as well and had some great nights out there.

What a lovely historic nautical pub. Really chatty and helpful landlord. The inside has so many impressive nautical themes including a large collection of sailing ship models and seafaring items. I highly recommend a visit to The Welcome Inn to enjoy the ambience.

A hidden gem in the east end of Sunderland. Here Sunderland seafaring heritage is proudly at the heart, the walls are scattered with ship related memorabilia and curiosities. Pub chains employ teams of designers and still don't come close to the feeling of home that this place creates. The Landlord has created a real community hub with cracking music, reasonably priced drinks and the most cost effective Sunday roast in the NE if not the UK. The picture attached to this review cost the eye watering sum of £5. It was all home made and tasted just like the Sunday dinna your nana made you... and this is was the SMALL. The Welcome Tavern is a Sunderland institution and needs protecting at all cost.

What an undeniably great experience we had on Saturday playing a headliner show here at the bunker. The staff were absolutely amazing and welcoming to every member of the band, they helped with setting up the stage in between sets and with understanding where everything we need is within the building, the bar staff in Otto next door were also really nice, the venue itself was just the right size to fit everyone who came, and the sound of the gig itself from Andy was top tier. Phil Jackson Appreciation Post Phil is an amazing sound engineer. He is a photographer of sound. He captures a singular moment. Songs aren't complete without his input. He provides us with a calming and encouraging atmosphere where we can be ourselves, express who we are and connect with the music, each other and ourselves. He is an amazing musician, very talented. He is also quite funny and easy to get along with. He is a fantastic producer and we really want to work with him in the studio again. There's a reason we all (the local music scene) sing his praises because not only is he a fantastic producer/sound tech/mixer/musician, but he is a lovely guy. We think very highly of him. I wouldn't want to work with anyone else. He is a pleasure to work with. I plan to work with him for both solo, Polyfillas and whatever future projects come up x

We arrived to an empty bar at around 16:00 on a Saturday which was surprising, but I guess it's off the beaten track. The staff were lovely, offered us a seat (apart from that one, which was reserved, ha!) and we ordered burgers and beers The gin selection is very impressive, the beers just as much! I could have two different sour beers which is nice and not usual, and the prices were v. reasonable. I had the Chicken Cheese Burger which was cooked to perfection. The cheese could have been melted on a little as it stuck out the sides like it had just come out the wrapper, but the tastes were perfect. We had three hot sauces for £1 which is a nice touch, the chipotle mayo was fab. The waffle fries were nice but there could've been more of them for the price. Overall I can't wait to go back - it's dog friendly, too!!

On the day of the wedding everything ran like clockwork. All the staff were lovely and attentitive towards the guests and the food was superb. Even the guests kept complimenting how great Matt and his staff were. The room was dressed perfectly to how my wife wanted it and not one small detail overlooked. Honestly if we could give this venue a higher rating we would and we would definitely recommend this venue to anyone wanting to get married.

My lovely wife announced that she would like a blue cheese burger so it was my job to hunt one down and knowing that The Fat Hippo have opened up in The Bonded Warehouse it was a quick Google of the menu then a phone call to reserve a table and we were off. I ordered the fried pickle starter, described as strips but appearing as discs, these coins of battered dill pickle are lovely and the accompanying sauces complimented them beautifully, cool sour cream and a tasty hot sauce, a great start. We both order the Stinky Pete with dirty fries upgrade, what wife wants she gets. A brioche bun with burgers blue cheese and relishes appear soon enough and we tuck in. Everything is very nice, just enough toppings and a good sized portion, our only criticism would be that the burgers were a little dry, maybe slightly overdone, just not as succulent as we expected, this was more apparent to my refined other half as she cut hers up where as I just tucked right in. We had a couple of soft drinks and the bill was quite reasonable, I think we will be back for another visit, there's a peanut butter topped burger I want to try.

Drinks were expensive. The comedy/ performance area was decorated like a wedding venue. At one point the stage lighting panned repeatedly over the audience, blinding me and my friends. Overall okay, but not great.

This charming independent café, run by the talented Ashley, is celebrated for its expertly crafted brews that have earned her a reputation as one of the best baristas around. The atmosphere at Otto transforms beautifully from a cozy daytime retreat to an energetic evening venue, making it perfect for any occasion.
Great coffee and snacks! Coffees are fairly priced, and there are a large variety available (including espresso & tonic, cold brew etc). Haven’t tried the brunch options but they sound nice. Staff are very friendly, and the cafe has a great vibe. Easily accessible from Park Lane metro station, making it a good stop when shopping.

I recently visited this amazing cafe, and I can’t stop raving about it! From the moment I walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere made me feel right at home. The decor is charming, with cozy seating and just the right touch of modern elegance. The menu is a delightful mix of classic and creative dishes, all made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. I tried their signature avocado toast and a cappuccino, and both were absolutely perfect—the toast was beautifully presented, and the coffee was rich and expertly crafted. The dessert selection is to die for; their chocolate lava cake was pure heaven! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure every detail was spot on without being overbearing. The service was quick, and they even offered great recommendations for pairings.

Came into the barbers with a friend who had an appointment. Got my own cut back into its layers (short cut). Very gentle, meticulous and friendly. The barbering room is profressional and comfortable. 100% recommend coming and getting your hair done here! And you are helping people gain their qualifications and confidence too!

We were at the Bistro for a Christmas evening meal. The food was quite nice but portions are fairly small. From start to finish our meal took 4 hours. Service was painfully slow.

This review is based on my daughters first 2 years at college. My daughter studied performing arts with this college, Sheree Rymer was the Head of Faculty and Jonathan was one of my daughters lecturers. My daughter started this course during the onset of Covid which lasted 2 years. She's not a confident girl who managed to make a few friends. Unfortunately, one of these girls had concerning problems at home leaving my daughter worried about her. The girls parents were secretly massaging and calling my daughter asking her questions about her friend (Their daughter who's 17), my daughter told her friend what the parents were saying, so they rang my daughter kicking off which later resulted in them contacting the school requesting their daughter be kept away from mine. Sheree became involved as she was a personal friend of the girls mother and told my daughter she was not allowed to be a friend with this girl outside of college. My daughter was told her grades would be a triple merit, but when this entire thing was happening the tutor Jonathan changed his attitude completely towards my daughter being mean on a regular occasion. They knew she wanted to go to uni so instead they downgraded her marks to passes. But, now these tutors are using her as an example in their performing arts class to encouragethem to do better. I'm sorry but tutors should not be personally getting involved or using this as ammunition to punish people. Taking advantage of their position is disgusting. THIS IS FOR THE BEDE CAMPUS NOT CITY

Useless, ignorant admin. staff (Bede campus), not a clue what they're doing. I gave them forms for a course because they didn't know which forms they needed, i had to tell the admin. staff what they needed. They couldn't understand the forms, even when i explained what they are for, they still couldn't understand and i have now been ignored. I am now doing the course at another college where the staff have better cognitive functioning. They really do need to go back to college!

such a lovely spot tucked away, selling vintage clothes (at a reasonable price) inside a coffee shop - what a perfect combo! The interior is cosy and welcoming and staff are genuine and friendly. They also host lots of queer artsy events. Will definitely be returning & spreading the word! ☺️
