Picarones are a delightful Peruvian treat that perfectly blends history and flavor. These fluffy, deep-fried fritters are crafted from a mix of mashed sweet potatoes and squash, giving them a distinct taste that sets them apart from ordinary donuts. Traditionally served drizzled with chancaca syrup—a rich concoction made from unrefined sugar often infused with hints of orange peel or cinnamon—picarones make for an irresistible dessert option.

(Translated by Google) A rest area just beyond the crowds. This picarones restaurant seems to be family-run. When I went, it cost 4 soles for 4 or 5. Locals also frequent the restaurant, and as I looked around, customers beckoned me over, saying the food was delicious. It's a great place with a great atmosphere. The pizzas were drizzled with honey that had a similar flavor to brown syrup, and the dough was very light and fried in clean oil, so I ate the whole thing by myself. It was delicious. I tried ceviche and seafood soup, both delicious and 1 plate big enough for 1 person. If you're ordering both, make sure you're 2 people. I also drank camu camu and maracuya (passion fruit). All was good and around 23$ fair for those delicious food.

Peru never disappoints when it comes to food!! You gotta wait in line to get in but it’s so worth it and never in my life have I ate so good until I went to Peru and I found out what real food tastes like! First time trying ceviche, and the mixed plate was delicious! The rice, chicharron, and ceviche combo was so good, and and a great value for the large portions.
Ryan S — Google review
As seen on Netflix’s Street Food Latin America, Al Toke Pez was high on my must-eat list the moment we landed in Lima. I told our friends it was non-negotiable, and they happily followed my cravings. After days of pretty bland meals, that first bite of fresh, tangy ceviche was pure heaven. The spot is tiny and the menu is short, but their signature mixed plate is a winner—fried rice, crispy seafood, and ceviche all on one plate. Add their fiery chili sauce (careful, it’s spicy), and it’s the perfect combo of flavor, crunch, and zing. Delicious, satisfying, and totally budget-friendly. Netflix did not lie. 😋✨
Bow T — Google review
As many reviewers suggest, it's best to come before they open and be the first to enter. There are only 9 seats. We were there 15 minutes early and were the first seated. It's small but comfortable. The staff is very efficient and keep everything moving. The food was well prepared and flavorful. We both had the Combinado for S 35 each and my wife had a chicha which is S 3. We both left very full. It's a good value for what you pay. And it's nice to support a small business.

Excellent. Very tasty, local food for local prices! It's 12/14 Soles a complete menu. The staff is super friendly although it's very busy at lunchtime, we waited for around 15 - 20 minutes. Try the "Causa"!!! Got the tip from the Netflix show and I would definitely come back!

The food was not good: "Palta Rellena" salty, "cau cau" mostly potatos, "Pescado con frejoles" ugly Bad service an annoyed " cajera" taking and billing orders Hostil atmosphere, I saw a server being agressive with an older customer. I had tried to eat in this place several time during many years used to be full, not now.
Marcia M — Google review
I went there because of Netflix and it was... just ok. They have too many clients, so sometimes the workers are screaming each other creating a bad vibe. They should come back to the old times, or if they really want to "grow" or "expand", go for a bigger place. Otherwise, it feels like selling the idea of real local experience in the market, which is not 100% authentic anymore.

Restaurant
Anticuchería Doña Pochita is a must-visit food stall in Lima, offering a taste of traditional Peruvian cuisine with its famous anticuchos. The dish has historical roots from the Virreynato times and is a testament to the culinary ingenuity of African slaves. Every evening, crowds gather outside Doña Pochita's stall to savor her expertly fried cow hearts served with aji colorado, vinegar, and garlic.
Great elevated street food of Peruvian anticuchos! I love the mixtos, patatas, choclos and aji the most. Recommended if you want sone variation of Peruvian dining experience that’s different from the Miraflores area.

I read about this place online and wanted to check it out. Really good cheap food! The chicken breast skewer was really good and so was the beef heart skewer. The potatoes were well cooked. The Chicha morada was delicious! I ordered a chicken heart too - it was okay. I feel the veins needs to be cleaned out from the heart but it wasn't done. But truly recommend this place!
Iffat H — Google review
Awesome and well reviewed Doña Pochitas Anticucheria, not sure how much action the food stall still gets but at our visit it was (small) restaurant service only. Choose your food from the overhead blackboard, pay and get your ticket, sit down and wait for your perfectly grilled beef hearts. Surprisingly tender, well seasoned and very enjoyable. Lovely little place to eat along local people.

Dona Ponchita is a Lima street food Legend. Anticuchos here are famous for a reason. We had anticuchos and chicken breast and both were fantastic AND affordable.

Not sure what to get so went with combo #1 👍 One of the employees was super helpful and went out of his way to help since it was obvious I was a tourist 😝 The food was slightly too salty for my tastes but delicious nonetheless. They also serve desserts so I had picarones as well, highly recommend. Sweet, doughy goodness.

Not exactly what i was expecting..🙄 When it comes to this type of cooking you gotta know your stuff. I ain't no expert but i had better. First of all. The establishment is nice and clean the cook was very professional. The flavor in the anticuchos was good but it didn't have the crusty smoky char flavor of cooking over charcoal .. like old school😫 I know times are changing but there are places out there that go old school all the way but good luck in finding one. I will keep coming until I find what I am looking for.

One of the best places to get Anticuchos in Lima. Their place is clean snd the price is right for the amount of food they serve. Another good thing is that they offer other types of meats like steak, chicken breast and pork chop. I would definetly would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a better option of fast food.

One of the best anticuchos in Lima. It is located in a busy area of Lince and surrounded by a a great food ambiance (fruits, desserts, chifas) We ordered the Anticuchos Mix platter (35 soles) that comes with beef heart and inners from the cow (gizzards, hearts and stomach). Simply delicious.

Excellent Picarones by a master of the Peruvian sweet!!! Parque Kennedy location in Miraflores. 10 Soles per order. There are 5 picarones for each order. Sometimes there is a line, other times not. I think it is better when there is a little bit of a line and the picarones are served fresh and hot. It's a tasty treat at a very reasonable price. Very friendly service.

Male Humitas y Tamales Delivery offers a unique take on the traditional Peruvian dish. In Lima and along the coast, they prepare their humitas using roasted peanuts, butter, and chili for a spicier flavor. These are then complemented with boiled eggs, olives, and either chicken or pork shreds. This variation sets them apart from the Andean tamal known as humita.

Large local market. Excellent selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood. A nice stop if you’re in Miraflores Lima Peru Not a top turistic attraction, but in my personal opinion a place you should visit if you want to explore the “local” side of Peru. Enjoy it I wish we’d have more fruits and vegetables in US, not to mention the prices, 0.99 cents for an orange 🍊 🥲 in Florida 🇵🇪

Marketplace with stalls selling fruit, meat, souvenirs, clothes. When we visited the inside space was closed, it was all outdoor stalls (perhaps it's no longer open inside?). Not a huge place, just a few rows of stalls. Fun to try some fruits previously unknown to us. Sellers don't hassle you to buy from them, which is nice.

The result is an incredibly delicious dish that costs less than six dollars.
This hole-in-the-wall Ceviche place is a hidden gem. The seating is limited, so you should avoid peak lunchtime. The food is amazing, the ceviche is well balanced: sour, spicy and salty. The different toppings like sweet potato and maize make the dish complete. My first stop in Lima for a Ceviche!

I tried Ceviche. Fish was fresh but taste was good, not surprising. Squid was great. Chicha Morada was amazing. Place was small but nice, it was like eating in “carretilla” very local type. Toilet was really clean, I really value this point. I did not like that they aloud street kids to sell gums and candies to customers.

Amazing cevichería. Great sized plates, intense flavor, high quality fish cuts and tasty chicha morada, which I recommend for you to pair with any dish. I asked for a spicy ceviche, which is how you should do if you want to have a real Peruvian ceviche. Go for it, you won’t be disappointed. Only dropped one star for the atmosphere because of the closeness to the street, which can get loudy, but I’m nitpicking. I’d absolutely come back during another trip to Lima.

Good ceviche. Although not the bestest for me yet. If you're in the area and "punto azul" is closed, this is a good 2nd choice. But be wary that the place is tiny. Only 20 people capacity so it is always full. If you're by yourself you'll be able to squeeze in but definitely not for bigger parties.

CHURROS SAN FRANCISCO S.A.C. is a popular churro spot in Lima, Peru, offering a unique take on this classic treat. Their churros are distinct from those found in other parts of Central and South America, with a crispy exterior and soft, chewy interior. The most favored filling is the Manjar Blanco (Dulce de Leche), which perfectly balances the flavors.
One of our group had visited earlier in the morning and recommended this to us. By the time we reached there was a queue spanning over 100 meters (bear in mind it was a Sunday afternoon, so inevitably busy). We queued and once we got to the counter, ordering was easy - three flavours to choose from. Once you pay, you join a separate, short queue to collect your order. The churros have a sauce filling, which is like molten lava, so be careful when eating. Once it cools slightly, it makes the wait worthwhile. I would recommend coming early to save the queuing.
Shiv ' — Google review
This place is super popular. We didn’t plan to eat, but we saw huge lines so we tried. The lines moved fast though. The line on the left is to purchase and the line on the right is for pickup. We got the cream one and the chocolate one with sugar on top (you can also ask them to skip the sugar). I think it’s ok. I don’t like either stuffing inside. The churos themselves are good as they were freshly made and soft.
WDannie — Google review
Best Churros in town. They have 3 different Churros with different fillings (chocolate, caramel, leche). I‘ve never had such good tasting Churros before. Moreover you only pay 3 SOL per piece, which is incredible for the quality of food you get.

Best churros near the convent of San Francisco! They opened very early in the morning before even cafes opened so we had their freshly baked warm churros instead.
Soo-Yon R — Google review
Might be slightly controversial here, but these are the best churros I’ve ever had. And that’s coming from someone who’s visited the greatest churro spots in Mexico… Make sure you get the Dulce de Leche! (Or as Peruvians call it, Manjar)
Zach V — Google review
Fried pastry basically rolled with 3 different options, with Manjar Blanco (Dulce de Leche) being the most popular and definitely my favorite. As I mentioned in my review of Virgen del Carmen, the only difference I find is in the dough. This one seems to be fried for longer, resulting in a crispier coat yet softer inside, possibly with a bit more salt to balance the flavors and the added sugar. In my opinion, the filling (Manjar Blanco) tastes identical. Both options are good, and at only S./ 3 each, you can't go wrong with either. This place and Manolo in Miraflores are hands down the best I've tried in the city. However, Manolo has a more traditional form factor, unfortunately it’s over double the price, but it has a lot more filling and is definitely sweeter in my opinion.

Mercado Central, located near Lima's central square, offers a vibrant and authentic local experience. The market is bustling with street food vendors and a wide variety of fresh seafood, fruits, vegetables, meats, spices, souvenirs, jewelry, and household items. While it can get crowded and loud with a strong smell in some areas typical of South American markets, it provides an honest pricing for its products.
We stopped by after visiting the convent of San Francisco. As non-Spanish speaking tourists, we were a little overwhelmed, but this market was very interesting. Very local vibe!
Soo-Yon R — Google review
An authentic South American covered market, with all the positives (great variety of products, especially food, but also house items, at very honest prices) and cons (crowded, loud, hectic and in some places with a strong smell) of South American traditional covered markets. During the day you can also find a good number of tourists, especially attracted by the many traditional restaurants in and near the market, but it is mostly a place where local residents come for their every day shopping. It opens very early in the morning and it closes early in the evening, so it is a great place to visit and wander around making a stop for breakfast or lunch, but not for dinner.
Niccolo' B — Google review
While the Mercado Central may not have the European charm of a central market, it's a worthwhile destination for those familiar with the city. Offering a wide variety of groceries, meat, fruits, and vegetables, this modernist building provides a unique and authentic experience for travelers.

A very crowded local market for everything you need. Ranging for fruits, meats, vegetables, home accessories, and dairy products. It's very clean for a traditional market and has various options for local and reasonably priced food for breakfast and lunch. They close early (because they open early) so do not come here for dinner.

Make sure you know what you want to buy ahead of time and, as always in these kind of places, be careful with you stuff. If buying meet you’ll need to have some skills to check for freshness. A great local market with really good food options, but also great for fresh fruits. There were many places for lunch, with few vegetarian options. The fruit stands were full of fresh local fruits for very fair prices. The lunch menus were also very fair priced.
Paul O — Google review
This market isn’t just a market, it’s a delicious little universe where fresh fruit practically winks at you from the stands. Every corner is a temptation: stacks of tropical colors, that “just-picked” perfume in the air, and prices that make you wonder if you’ve accidentally time-traveled back to when things were actually affordable. Lunch options? Oh yes—plenty. Vegetarian choices? A few, though meat and seafood clearly run the show here. But the real crown jewel? Norma Cevichería. I wandered in expecting a decent meal, and instead, I got a culinary love affair. The Chilcano fish soup—comfort in a bowl, with just enough zing to make you sit up straighter. Then came the ceviche con chicharrones de pescado: fish so fresh it could’ve been swimming that morning, paired with golden, crunchy bites that made my fork dance. Service? Like visiting your favorite aunt who also happens to be a professional host—warm, quick, and genuinely delightful. If you come to this market and skip Norma, you’ve basically missed the headline act. Best huarique here, hands down. Bring an appetite, leave with a happy belly and a phone full of fruit photos you’ll pretend are “for Instagram.”

We were led to this market as part of a food tour. Many restaurants make their daily grocery runs here according to the guide. It’s a massive maze of stalls offering anything from a myriad of different maize varietals, potatoes to which I’ve found out that there are over 6,000 varieties in Peru alone and food stalls with massive portions that you should be warned about if you have other meals planned for your trip. Markets are a must visit whenever I travel and this is really local, untainted by tourist trappings and just hardworking Peruvians who are only happy to chat and make their trades of the day. Try their exotic fruits. My favourite was the lucuma, a red avocado (I know it doesn’t look red) native to the country that tastes like a rich, sweet pound cake. Mind blowing.

we walked in and checked all the places ! Then we came across Don Danilo stall #486 ! When I tell you he was the kindest and most caring man we have met so far on the trip ! I am not able to eat anything raw which has me saddened because it’s one of the key dishes of Peru ! He took matters into his own hands decided to go buy raw shrimp ! Show it to me ! Cook it for me, show it to me again! Then serve it ! My husband ordered a regular raw ceviche as well and it was delightful! We also ordered chicken causas which were delicious !!

This market is legendary, only the best vegetables and fruit are sold here (be careful with peeled green Lima beans, seemingly processed a few days before) and they look very clean. Cooked food is so good long queues are for at midday. Meats look very good too. Market offers various services such as knife sharpening. There are antique shops nearby with good prices.

Visitors can immerse themselves in a treasure trove of offerings, from stunning art pieces and aromatic products to exquisite jewelry, vintage clothing, organic goods, and mouthwatering food options.
LOTS of cool and interesting things to find here. I picked up a few stones (citrine, adventurine), but they also had an impressive assortment of clothes and eateries. Great atmosphere as well. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the Barranco area.

Opened before noon but completely set up after 3 pm, this shop offers a refreshing change from the typical Inca market vibe. Instead of souvenirs, they stock everyday essentials like snacks, tees, comfy clothes, and PJs made from cozy Peruvian cotton. I ended up finding more great deals here than at the Inca market

A cute little market full of food and souvenir stalls. Some a bit kitsch but a nice visit all in all. Also live music sometimes... Closed Mondays & Tuesdays.

Such beautiful place!! There is a bunch of tiny shops inside ranging from different types of food (sweet and salty), different clothing stores, even tea shops! As well as coffee shops. There is even a spot where you can get plants 😍. We went on Sunday afternoon so there were some workshops happening for kids and to end the night Herencia Criolla played live for about an hour ✨✨ And in case you were wondering, yes, there are clean bathrooms inside for 1 Sol 👌🏽

Nestled in the heart of Lima, the Gran Hotel Bolivar is a historic treasure that transports you back to a glamorous era. With its warm rooms and upscale suites, this elegant hotel boasts a stylish restaurant and an inviting cocktail lounge where you can savor Peru's iconic Pisco Sour. The hotel's rich history is evident in its stunning architecture and decor, having hosted notable figures like Clark Gable and Mick Jagger since its opening in 1924.
We stayed here for two nights while we were in Lima and really enjoyed it. The rooms are large, although the traffic can be noisy it quietens down overnight. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast was nice. Beautiful old building.

The food and drinks were very good, but the service was somewhat distant; they should be more committed to their customers and were quite cold in their approach. However, what surprised me the most, and I won't let this go unnoticed, is that one of the glasses broke on the table because I accidentally bumped it against another glass. I called them to be careful, and they told me they would charge me for it—a cheap glass—but the lack of delicacy impressed me. If I hadn't mentioned it, they wouldn't have noticed. I've never seen anything like this anywhere else: charging for a cheap glass."

We arrived at midnight. The lobby had a musician film crew & the music was loud. Filming went on past 6am. None of this was posted on their website. I guess we know where their priorities lie. We had just finished a 5-6 hr. bus ride back from Huacuchina. We all still needed a shower or bath. after all the music & filming went on all night. guess what??? NO hot water in any rooms. NO heat/ rooms were very cold. It is middle of May. The bathrooms are huge & they have that step up. The internet is great at this Hotel but very slow. By now it was 9am. : Coffee & Breakfast took a long time coming & there were only 2 tables. There are not a lot of people staying at this hotel. it does not take that much time to make coffee. Very Opulent Surroundings but we did not feel like Kings or Queens or even their guests. Service was SLOW. There were 3 of us. Rooms are okay. There were many, many tours going on. I guess that's how they make their money. not many people stay here. I would not recommend staying here for any money & the busy, busy, noise. & just the musicians that took over. We ended up getting our one night money back & then we asked for a refund for the next 2 nights & we left. I'm happy we did. not at Bolivar any more. the manager was a wonderful, polite, & apologetic person but the Hotel has to be updated. Internet, hot water, breakfasts etc....
Monika E — Google review
The historical aspect of the hotel is certainly impressive and gives it a unique charm. However, it’s clear that absolutely nothing has been updated since the hotel was first built. I understand the appeal of preserving history, but there are ways to maintain a property so that it ages gracefully — unfortunately, that’s not the case here. The moment we walked into the lobby, we were overwhelmed by a foul, nauseating smell that followed us all the way to the room. The walls were dirty, the curtains were stained, and the overall condition felt neglected. The only indication that the room had been cleaned was the strong smell of bleach, which mixed unpleasantly with the persistent odors in the hotel. Despite its potential, the experience was disappointing due to poor maintenance and a lack of basic cleanliness. With some care and investment, this place could truly shine — but as it stands, it feels like a beautiful building left to decay.
Les D — Google review
What a strange hotel experience. The historical look is beautiful, but otherwise did not feel welcome here. When returning in the evening the place is covered in scary looking security guards, all of whom appear very skeptical that anyone actually stays at this hotel as a guest. And none of them speak English in order to discern who belongs and who doesn't. We were almost not allowed to enter the front door, and then once finally inside a man refused to let us go to the elevators and was unable to communicate to us why we couldn't go to the room we paid for.
Nicholas B — Google review
Did not stay here but went there as a meeting point for a city tour. Great history. Worth visiting to see the architecture and read about the history of the hotel.
I R — Google review
I did not stay at the hotel overnight, rather I went to the restaurant. A member of my party had called before our arrival to ensure that my party would be able to sit on the terrace given the number of people with us, and they said yes. When we arrived, however, they told us that they could not do that. It was a rather annoying inconvenience but we were okay with sitting inside. A few minutes after ordering we were moved by the staff outside to the terrace, which would have been a kind gesture if the staff and waiters weren’t clearly in a bad mood. They seemed annoyed that they had to do it and put tables together to fit everyone. The food and drinks in and of themselves were good, but the attitude of the servers was just not good and it really devalued the entire experience. They need to do better.
Leo F — Google review
We did not stay here but had a refreshing Pisco Sour on a hot afternoon in the bar area. Beautiful historic hotel with wonderful antiques and stained glass. Wish they kept up the interior better, vacuumed the rug in the entryway, dusted, etc.

(Translated by Google) The price is reasonable, but the place has already lost its pork flavor, apparently they cook it and then fry it, but if they cook it for too long it loses its flavor and when they fry it they try to reactivate it, but with the bread you can't taste it. The Creole sauce is passable, and I really like the coffee since it's strong and hot ♨️. Sébastien A — Google review
I'm not at all surprised that this place gets very crowded during lunch hours when employees from nearby offices come for a quick meal. The portions are very generous, and the fish is truly fresh. However, for me, the place is quite noisy. It’s definitely not a spot where you can sit down and enjoy a quiet meal. It’s a great place for fresh, well-priced ceviche, but it's more of a quick dining experience rather than a relaxed one. Besides ceviche and the nice combo sets that offer different fish combinations, I also had parihuela. It took about 20–25 minutes to prepare, but it was very good and came in a large portion.

La Cilindrada de Pedrito is a unique dining experience that originated from Pedro Peves, a former mechanic who discovered the art of roasting meats on his cilindrada. This restaurant offers exquisite dishes such as mixed 1/4 chicken and pork, with the option to switch fries for parboiled sweet potato. The ambiance is described as ventilated and cool, although some smoke from the cylinder adds to the authenticity.
Pedritos is amazing. Especially if you want authentic Peruvian cuisine that centers on carefully crafted pork loin from the grill. Always spot on cause the owner seems to be an integral part of the restaurant's QA. There is no way that it could get any better!!

They have a variety of cylinder meats such as Pork, Chicken and Duck, they also have a good Lasagna and a spectacular Chaufa without leaving aside a very delicious Lomo Saltado. The prices are slightly high and it seems to me that the place could be better decorated. The bathrooms are clean but they do not have a special one for the disabled. You can pay in cash and by card but only Visa. It has street parking but it is guarded. Finally I tell you that alcohol consumption is limited. (Original) La experiencia fue agradable. While some visitors have noted that their first experience with these sweet treats could be improved by serving them warmer, the overall consensus is that they are still incredibly delicious.
Although not fresh the moment you order, they were fresh enough. Also, with plenty of honey, these were our 2nd favorite. We really liked that we got 5 in 1 order. Great amount of honey too. It was nice to sit and eat in the park.

First time trying picarones! They seemed like they had been sitting out for a while, so they weren’t as fresh as I’d hoped. Still very yummy, but they would have been even better if they were warmer. They came with lots of honey or syrup, which was delicious but did attract quite a few bees—so watch out!

This vibrant dish features layers of mashed potatoes combined with chicken, seafood, avocados, and mayonnaise, all beautifully presented to create an eye-catching tower.
