Okayama Castle is a replica of a 16th-century castle that offers historical exhibits, artifacts, and expansive gardens. It is known as the 'Crow Castle' due to its black exterior and is one of Japan's top 100 castles. The surrounding area boasts attractions such as Kibitsu Shrine, Okayama Korakuen garden, and the Naoshima Art Islands. Additionally, visitors can explore the hometown of Momotaro, a famous folk hero in Japanese culture.
Actually is very cool because there’s no gate around the castle so you can actually get close and touch it! If you go during sunset is beautiful but if you go at night is also beautiful. The area around is so quiet and peaceful I literally took a nap just laying down by the river and then walked around the castle. Definitely recommend to go for a picture or just to check out and learn about its history.
Manuela B — Google review
Any opportunity to visit a Japanese castle, one should take the offer. Okayama Castle is worth the trip and a must. Depending on where you are staying, you may have to take a short streetcar ride to the park. Then walk on the promenade along the Asahi River to the castle. The castle is so beautiful on the outside, with the surrounding grounds complementing its beauty. Once you enter the castle, you step into an incredible museum of Okayama and the history of the castle. Some articles you are unable to take photos of, so keep it in mind as you view each floor. I did ask if photos are okay prior to starting to review the exhibitions. On the top floor, you can see the whole area of Okayama, where it is quite scenic. A very interesting history of Okayama. If you have the opportunity, go towards the early evening when the lighting complements the castle at night and it’s cooler outside.
Henry M — Google review
Okayama Castle is an impressive sight with a beautiful, unique design, often called the “Crow Castle” because of its black exterior. The atmosphere is very peaceful, and the surrounding park area makes the visit even more enjoyable. A great spot to learn about history and enjoy the view!
Vincent — Google review
The Black Castle is a must-visit when you are in town. The interior of the castle has been refurbished into a modern museum. All displays come with QR codes for translation into English or Chinese. The castle and surroundings may not be comparable to other bigger, famous castles elsewhere, but you certainly can find interesting history here. There's a cafe and souvenir store within.
Kee N — Google review
We went on a Sunday and I also think it was a holiday, September 12th, because there were vendors everywhere which made it even more fun. We got some great street food while we were there. This was the fourth castle we've been too and the inside was the most modern of all of them. Very good displays. Each floor has different themes. There's even an elevator, which is rare for these castles. Unfortunately at the top you can't go outside like some of the others so the cute isn't quite as nice as others. We also took a pottery class at a building just outside the temple and that was a lot of fun.
Brett B — Google review
Aka The "Crow Castle" is a total standout! Its striking black exterior gives it a mysterious, unique look that's fantastic for photos. Inside, it's a modern, accessible museum with fun hands-on activities. The biggest highlight is the amazing panoramic view of the beautifully contrasting Koraku-en Garden right across the river. It's an easy, rewarding, and cool castle visit.
JJJay A — Google review
It is great Japanese castle. The exterior color is mainly black in color, made it very special among other traditional Japanese castles. There is a small small museum inside the castles, air conditioning which makes you feel comfortable especially during summer. You may take the photos of the castle on the bridge or right in front of the entrance.
Michael H — Google review
Nicknamed the Crow castle because it’s painted black. Cute little castle with a museum inside. Often Japanese castles are more enjoyed from the outside views then inside museums as there’s little English. But a quick walk across the bridge to take a little boat ride and eat at the restaurant before going into the park grounds makes for a nice afternoon.

Historic Walking Areas
Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a charming historic area located along a picturesque canal, featuring classic architecture, shops, eateries, and galleries. This old merchant quarter showcases traditional wooden warehouses from the 17th century known as kura, characterized by white walls and black tiled roofs. The area has been preserved through city ordinances and government recognition.
Walking around the scenery was beautiful, the architecture of some of the buildings was awesome to see. The canal area was my favourite area as it was so beautiful and peaceful. There were fish and swans in the canal which was nice to see. Overall I would highly recommend this place to visit to even to just walk around for an hour or two it’s worth it.
Gabbar R — Google review
🌟 "A charming blend of history, culture, and canals — Bikan Historical Quarter" Bikan Historical Quarter in Kurashiki is a true step back in time, where beautiful Japanese wooden buildings meet elegant touches of European architecture. Strolling along the scenic canal, with its willow trees and peaceful atmosphere, feels like walking through a living postcard. The streets are lined with unique souvenir shops, perfect for finding special gifts, as well as cozy cafés and restaurants to relax and enjoy a coffee or a meal. The area is also impressively wheelchair-friendly, making it easy for everyone to explore at their own pace. Tip: Take your time here — the magic is in the slow walk, soaking in the details, and letting the blend of history and nature work its charm. A must-visit when you visit Japan!
Dale A — Google review
Delightful quaint historical center full of unique shops & cafes. It’s a place where beautiful Japanese wooden architecture meets European touch. One can explore a breathtaking vista through walking in its tranquil landscape. Recommendations: set aside enough time to visit here. Boat ride: until 15:00 Parking: plenty of paid parking available yet hardly can found. In front of KURASHIKI CITY ART MUSEUM parking offers Budget parking.
Google review
Incredibly beautiful old town, quaint shops, cafes and cool boutiques with fashion, pottery, glassware and local produce. Amazing Ohara Art Museum and romantic canal with traditional boats, as well as rickshaws taking you around the old town. A must visit destination!!!
Klaus C — Google review
Love this beautiful place! Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a beautifully preserved Edo-period merchant district, once a major rice distribution hub under the Tokugawa shogunate. Its white-walled storehouses and willow-lined canal reflect Japan’s prosperity from the 17th to 19th centuries, blending samurai-era charm with early modern industry.
Kisson L — Google review
A very nice place to spend an afternoon. I highly recommend the short boat ride down the canal. We also stopped at the denim street. It was not very busy when we visited compared to the rest of Japan tourist areas.
Roger W — Google review
Quaint little village. Souvenirs of a higher quality than most, including some nice clothing, pottery and art. Can get very hot, with less shade than some tourist spots. Highly recommended for a visit.
Felix — Google review
This is a lovely place for a stopover. The old quarter invites you to linger and explore. If you walk up to the temple, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view over the neighborhood. Just like in Venice, small boats glide along the canal, adding to the cozy and charming atmosphere.

Nature & Parks
Okayama Korakuen is a stunning 18th-century garden that was once frequented by Edo period rulers. It features serene ponds, temples, and even resident cranes. This Japanese garden has been recognized for its beautiful scenery and historical significance, earning three stars from the Michelin Guide. It's a must-visit attraction in Okayama, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage.
A very extensive and beautiful garden. Love the bridge and river that surround the garden. It's very well maintain too. You can spend couple of hours to enjoy the scenery. There are many koi fish in the ponds too. It's really worth of visit. Come here in autumn 2023 and the views is amazing and not too crowded of visitor
Prima P — Google review
I went on a picnic today at Korakuen. The garden is peaceful and pretty. It was a little bit rainy. You can see stunning Okayama castle from the garden. I want to go there again.
Lae — Google review
If you want to experience the fresh atmosphere of nature, this is the place to visit. Fresh air, lush green land, crystal clear water and enchanting castles make this place so beautiful. Parking: plenty of paid parking, ¥100/40mins
Google review
I think this has to be my favourite Japanese garden. Many water features, fun wooden and rock stepping-stone bridges, a beautiful viewpoint to Okayama castle, and many resting places along the way. Accessible for all walking levels. I didn’t see any wheelchairs, but I think mostly wheelchair accessible. Can happily spend 90 minutes here
Soma D — Google review
Absolutely loved it. We were at the train station & had just two hours before our train but got a taxi there & back (1200 yen going, 800 coming back (!?!)) & we're so glad we did. We were too late for flowers & too early for autumn colors but it was still beautiful. Waterfall, koi, sculptural cedar trees, a small turning wheel on a stream, lovely little buildings.... Rather small -- you can cover it in a hour -- but a seriously peaceful garden sanctuary.
R. — Google review
This garden was just lovely. It was a very warm day but there was enough shady spots to rest. We particularly enjoyed seeing the cranes - and there was a guide there who was practicing his English and asked if we could help. It was so very charming!!!
Meegan B — Google review
You can pay for the entrance of the Okayama castle and the garden and to be honest not to expensive❤️. On this trip, one of my favorite gardens! Also, so many Koi fishes and you can buy for 100yen food to give them, its so much fun, many places around for beautiful photos! The staff is so friendly! Okayama became a good place to stay a few days of any Japan trip. Very quiet and relax vibe.
Angelica C — Google review
Beautiful garden. With seeing the traditional Japanese garden and this is a great representation of one. There's also a small ship to get some food inside. Might as well visit this garden and the castle across the street.

Myoukyo-ji is a significant Inari shrine in Japan, known for its massive 87-foot-tall torii gate that welcomes visitors to the over 1,200-year-old temple grounds. The shrine combines Shinto and Buddhist faiths and is dedicated to the deity Inari, associated with rice, fertility, and prosperity. Visitors come to pray for good luck and success.
This place has both a Buddhist Temple and a Shinto Shrine. It was very interesting. It was a little crowded with preparation for the new year festivities when we went, but we were able to park for a fee. The Buddhist portion seems better served than the Shinto portion when we went. The Shinto side looked a lot less traveled and less used. The souvenir shop was filled with a lot of good snacks and we bought several at a reasonable price.
Joseph W — Google review
Large and spacious shrine in the north side of Okayama. Also has a local market at the bottom.
Aziz K — Google review
I visit this temple once a year. your heart will be clean

Beautiful views, peaceful and tranquil. We came in May so it was still cool and not many people. Definitely one of the busiest shrines in Okayama during new year's.
Adam T — Google review
Large and looked great in the hillside. Lots of flags along the way. Car could enter the inner area. A special dome shape temple inside with a story. The souvenir shop was well decorated. There was other shops outside the temple.
Joseph C — Google review
This is kinda further from the Bitchu-Takamatsu station than I expected. I waited until there was a taxi available. He took me here. Definitely put in it on your list.

The Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art is a key attraction in Okayama, showcasing both Western and Japanese artworks. It is part of the cultural zone along with the nearby Korakuen Garden and Orient Museum of Art. The museum hosts special exhibitions throughout the year and offers a unique 'Neighbor Art Museum' program where two museums exchange artworks for display. Additionally, visitors can enjoy guided tours and craft workshops at this contemporary gallery.
Came for Suzuki Toshio’s exhibition, great collections of some of his early works and hand scripts.
Mato S — Google review
no text in english available, i used google translation to understand the exhibition. the 350¥ exhibition isn‘t that big but you can spend like an hour there or longer. the staff was really kind!⭐️
Yona Y — Google review
Very nice space with exceptional pieces from all over Japan. English information generally about the artist rather than the art pieces themselves but interesting nonetheless. At 360Y entry it's very cheap, but for the size of the regular exhibit display space, it's about right. Special areas cost more and I didn't go into those. No cameras/photos allowed.
Matt B — Google review
This was an awesome museum! The art exhibition they had going on was very cool as well.
Leif H — Google review
I had a great time there. The museum rotates with non permanent exhibitions making it a really good spot for dynamic cultural exchange. Their museum shop is great and the building's architecture really makes it a highlight. The café however, altough pleasant due to its Art Déco style, had a limited drink menu and half decent coffee.
Lukas — Google review
Beautiful collection of art with a special exhibition of Wada Makato illustrations and a nice art shop. Amazing number of stamps.

Okayama City Handayama Botanical Gardens is a sprawling hilltop recreational area established in the 1950s, boasting over 3,000 plant species and offering stunning panoramic views of the city. The gardens feature various greenhouses with tropical plants and exotic cacti. One of its highlights is the enchanting display of around 1,000 cherry trees that bloom in spring, creating a mesmerizing pink spectacle.
Beautiful botanical garden where I really amazed by the harmony of cherry blossoms, blue sky and green colors. One can enjoy the magnificent view of Okayama city from the top. Highly recommended for those who want to escape from the hustle & bustle or enjoy some good time with family and friends.

Lots of amazing floral finds. Exhibits in the hall are available from time to time. I suggest you check the page first before heading to find if various flowers are in season/in full bloom
Hannah H — Google review
It’s located in a comparative high land of Okayama, so you can have a great view of the whole city. Anyway it’s worth seeing and let you and your kids spend a day of leisure moments.
So R — Google review
Wonderful botanical garden on the side of a hill. We came during cherry blossoms so that was the main attraction. Very picturesque and plenty of places to sit in silence and solitude and just soak in the nature. Note that the time of year you visit will determine what trees/ botanicals are blooming. Not all the areas are in bloom year round. The rose bushes, Japanese maples, and Lily pads were all essentially off exhibit and nothing to look at. But they have English maps and entry fee is quite low.

Located in Kurashiki, Japan, the Ōhara Museum of Art is the country's oldest private museum, established in 1930. It showcases a diverse collection of French sculptures and modern Japanese paintings. The museum was founded by Magosaburo Ohara, a successful merchant with a passion for Western art. Its Greek architectural style stands across from the former Ohara residence on the banks of the Kurashiki River.
Great museum, wity unexpected masterpieces, for a museum in a little city, from Monet, Cezanne, Sisley, etc. The reason is : the founder bought them in the twenties, when prices where not as indecent as they became later
Dominique A — Google review
I quite liked the collection, not vast but curated and you also get to see the asian and china museums. At 2000 yen with no senior discount its twice as expensive as larger collections in the Ueno park area (Tokyo) and also no photos allowed which is daft. Took some any way, sue me.
Steve R — Google review
A surprisingly good collection across three separate buildings. The main gallery has remarkable works from Pissarro, Picasso, and Renoir alongside a stunning Japanese pieces. A must do if you are in the area.
Mel B — Google review
Ohara Museum of Art has a rather small collection. And although they have a few nice canvases it hardly justifies the heavy entrance fee of ¥2,000. On top of that they do not display some nice pieces probably due to rotation of the exhibit. Photography is not allowed.
Ron S — Google review
No photos is obsolete. Nobody uses flash, so it's not to protect the artwork; it is exclusively to sell items in the gift shop. The marketing benefit of allowing photos vs the sales of postcards has been proven years ago, but Ohara hasn't yet caught on. My favorite work there was not available as a print.
Stuart — Google review
Great little museum that apparently have an El Greco, bit they neither tell you normrefucd the price as the painting is away for restoration. But lots of other nice paintings by japanese artists

Nestled on Inujima Island, the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum is a unique contemporary art gallery housed within the remains of a former copper refinery. The museum's concept revolves around utilizing existing structures to create something new, with environmentally friendly architecture designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi. Natural energy sources like solar and geothermal heat are incorporated into the building's design, along with an existing chimney and karami bricks.
One of the best museums I’ve ever seen. I really liked the first exhibit with the sun. The location is also super neat. The falling apart towers are incredible to look at.
Yolanda — Google review
Hard to describe the experience by words and photos, definitely memorable. The artworks and space design work together perfectly. No photos inside, but don’t miss the toilet after the exit!
Tianshu T — Google review
The museum was separated into inside and outside part. Inside, you will go through a dark tunnel, and then reach at the exhibition space, which was used as a part of the factory. There will always be staffs helping you; sometimes they will give a brief introduction about the art pieces. At the final exhibition room, there might be an Japanese old lady. I think she can introduce the history for tourist, however, it's a shame that I don't understand Japanese. When you go outside, just follow the sign. You can see some remains everywhere. I think a good museum is the combination of art and history, and this museum is definitely the good one.
Misky H — Google review
The work in this museum evoke metaphysical artists like Giorgio de Chirico. It is so surreal in the most incredible sense. Loved the Duchamp's reference. I also felt like I could be in the Studio Ghibli world. Thank you for creating this place.
Johnson ( — Google review
Including this and other projects, I strongly recommend not purchasing tickets. Despite the high price, there wasn’t even a single restroom, and the interior layout was highly confusing. The exit signs were unclear, and the few staff members present simply stood around watching visitors struggle without offering any guidance. In addition, the installation artworks had no explanatory panels or descriptions. Honestly, just viewing the old factory ruins with the surrounding scenery from outside would have been more than enough.

Most beautiful temple I have ever seen we got a tour from a local lady that we asked for directions. The lake is a little dirty but is full of beautiful koi fish. There are wild boar behind it in the Forrest and u can even hear them occasionally
Roengoer — Google review
You can only participate in meditations on Sundays. It’s not a place of open spirituality but rather rigid and inflexible. If it’s a meditation center, one should be able to join meditations freely, without fixed schedules or specific days. Therefore, I don’t recommend it, since spirituality should be something more open, free, and fluid—not what they propose. Also, if you just want to take a walk in the park, you wouldn’t go to a Zen temple but rather to engage in group practices. I don’t recommend it. Also, the people who are focused on taking photos or promoting photography in that place—or just taking selfies—seem completely distracted and out of place to me.
Alberto L — Google review
“A disappointing experience. It is a closed place where no one from the outside is welcome. Instead of being a place that invites you to meditate in the present moment, it is limited to just one day a week. Moreover, it seems that the people who visit are only interested in the superficial beauty of nature, rather than engaging in true meditation as a temple of this kind should inspire.”

Nestled just north of the serene Korakuen, the Yumeji Art Museum stands as a tribute to Takehisa Yumeji, one of Japan's most celebrated Romantic artists from the Taisho era. This charming museum, housed in a beautifully renovated former train station since 1984, showcases an impressive collection of Yumeji's lyrical paintings and original drawings that often feature enchanting depictions of women.
Beautiful artwork and illustrations by artist Yumeji. Graphic designers should come see his work for inspiration. Highly recommended and close to Okayama Castle.
Jimmy D — Google review
The museum was really organised in terms of labelling and directions to exhibition rooms. Though small, but there is a wide variety of original works by Mr Yumeji himself. It'll be good if the artwork descriptions or pamphlets had English so it can cater to more foreign visitors. But overall the whole walking through experience, and the architecture of the building was very beautiful. The bus that brought us here was also cat-themed by their mascot Kuronosuke was so adorable too! 💕

Away from the crowds , a quiet moment - coffee and a little something after in the art cafe next door.
Jenny M — Google review
Cute gallery though it was quite small, my group saw everything in under 20 minutes.
Zara S — Google review
Kinda mid. Small exhibit and space showing Yumeji’s works; probably takes about 15-30 mins to get through everything. The price was a bit high for what you get but what are you gonna do. The artworks are beautiful, however and seeing some of his personal effects were interesting too. At the end of the exhibits is a cute cafe and gift shop as well.
Rachel M — Google review
This is a great museum if you are a fan of Yumeji. If not, then you can probably skip this one. The English signage is very minimal (limited pretty much to titles of works). If you know any Japanese, the interpretive materials are not too hard to read. It was really wonderful to see so many original artworks by Yumeji san. The museum did a good job explaining his life and the context of his work. For those who don’t know, Takehisa Yumeji is a very popular artist. His work, especially paintings of women, typify the “Taisho Roman” or the quintessential style of the Taisho era. A lot of his works were published in popular media such as books and magazines. His work was influential in popular art and he remains famous in Japan to this day. I hope he can gain some more fans from abroad!

Average museum. The cost for entry was high given the size at 800 yen. The art was nice but I didn't feel like it was entirely worth it

Immerse yourself in the world of traditional Japanese swords at the Bizen Osafune Japanese Sword Museum. Located in the Osafune area of Setouchi City, this museum showcases a variety of Japanese swords, including those from the renowned Bizen sword production area. Visitors can witness a Japanese sword workshop on-site and even participate in knife-making experiences and lectures on sword care.
"Out in the sticks" and a 25min walk from the nearest station (Kagato, from Osaka), taxis are a rarity in this area. If however, you have a keen interest in the ancient art of Japanese sword making, both katana and wakizashi, then this museum is not to be missed. They have a number of katana on display dating back to the 13th century. Also in the compound are various active workshops, covering all the steps in the production of the katana swords, which all samurai carried and used for defence and attack.

Really interesting place to visit and find out about sword making. Demonstration of smithing and other skills. Well worth a visit!

Very interesting story of sword making in the area. Fine collection of blades as well. There are demonstrations two times a month (check their website..I think it was second and fourth Sundays, but don't trust my memory). Definitely worth a visit if you're interested in blades and their construction.

A really nice Japanese sword museum. Excellent displays with some English information >> more English about the history, production, etc would be welcome. Admission is only ¥300, which is extremely reasonable for this quality. Try to go on one of the monthly demonstration days and watch the craftsmen make actual swords. Parking is free. Access by public transportation is difficult (from JR Oku Sta, take a taxi).
Andrea M — Google review
An amazing collection of swords! Also a in depth place to see swords actually being made by master craftsmen
Only I — Google review
One of the great master in sword making is still practicing there. It is a living museum and apprentices are usually practicing on certain days. The museum has a boutique where you could find unique handmade kitchen knifes. Osafune visit can be combined with a trip to Bizen, the capital of pottery making, both locations and both crafts depending on the same ingredient: unique quality of mud and crystal clear water.
Eric M — Google review
Very nice museum. English explanations available. Workshops show how a sword is made the 2nd Sunday of every month, at 11 am and 2 pm. Some crafting classes and maintenance of Japanese swords by appointment.

Kibitsu Shrine is a breathtakingly grand shrine, one of the largest I’ve seen in Japan! Just a 25-minute walk from Kibitsu Hiko Shrine, it’s well worth the visit. The striking entrance, adorned with beautiful white lanterns, is truly captivating. The long, elegant corridor running alongside the shrine adds to its majestic charm. A must-see for anyone seeking a serene and awe-inspiring cultural experience!

A sacred landmark which is quiet & free from disturbances. It’s ancient & traditional architectural style, double gabled roof makes a must see spot. It’s one of major shrine in Japan. Parking: plenty of free parking available. Entry fee: free
Google review
One of the best parts of cycling the Kibiji bike trail is finding this amazing old shrine. It's a truly quiet and special place. Unlike the famous shrines in Kyoto that are always packed with people, this one is peaceful. You can walk around the grounds without being in a huge crowd, which is a wonderful and relaxing change. You can feel a real sense of calm here, and it's the kind of place where you can finally hear yourself think and just enjoy the beautiful nature and historic buildings around you. But this shrine has a secret: it’s connected to a very famous story. You might know the legend of Momotaro, the "Peach Boy" who came from a giant peach to fight monsters. Many people in Japan believe that this beloved fairytale actually started right here. The legend is based on a real prince who is honored at this shrine, and as you walk around the ancient grounds, you can almost imagine his epic adventures happening long ago. What really surprised me was finding a dohyō—a sumo wrestling ring—on the shrine grounds. It’s a raised circle made of packed clay and sand, and seeing it makes history feel so real. This ring is solid proof of how the sport of sumo began. Long ago, sumo wasn't just a sport; it was a special ceremony. Matches were held right here to honor the gods and ask for a good harvest. Kibitsu Jinja is an incredible stop where you get to enjoy a quiet escape, walk through the setting of a famous legend, and see the spiritual home of sumo wrestling all in one visit.
Kee N — Google review
Kibitsu Shrine is sole example of the Kibitsu-zukuri style, an ancient and traditional architectural style, characterised by its double gabled roof, lending it a kind of twin structure, as if two separate shrines were merged into one. As with any major shrine, the whole hillside has been filled with more pagodas, small dedicatory shrines, a handful of manicured gardens, a pond with rotund koi, which you can feed, and, at the height of June, a forest bursting with blue hydrangea flowers.

Kibitsuhiko Shrine, also known as Kibitsu-jinja Shrine, is a significant Shinto structure with a history dating back to the Edo period. The shrine's main deity is Okibitsu Hiko no Mikoto and it is believed to have been built on the site of Kibitsu's residence. The inner shrine was reconstructed in 1697, while the rest of the shrine was rebuilt in 1936.
They have many events and weekly markets held here. In April and May, there are many carps of flags over the parking lot due to Children's day on May 5th. The access from the nearest train station is not so bad, and recently it is getting so popular for international travelers to visit here and Kibitsu shrine, which is similar name but different Shinto shrine located a few kilometers away. If you rent a bicycle, you can visit both shrines easily and enjoyably.

Established in 1953, Ikeda Zoo is the sole zoo in Okayama Prefecture and a popular spot for families seeking an animal-filled adventure. With over a hundred different species, including bears, penguins, and various monkeys, visitors can also interact with smaller animals like chickens and rabbits. Originally a farm opened to feed hungry children after World War II, the zoo has evolved into a diverse collection of exotic creatures that guests can even feed.
📄 Description of the area: ————————— 🐅 - Ikeda Zoo: There is a bus route which runs in the general vicinity of Ikeda Zoo, it is a 12 minute walk from the bus stop to the zoo, assuming you know which way to walk. A more reasonable method for visitors to access the zoo is to catch a taxi at the JR Okayama train station. The ride takes about 8 minutes, and my taxi fare from Okayama Station to the zoo was 1060 yen. Entertaining for kids. There's a flower festival in April. Nicely kept but.. Small zoo with small cages, which should be a concern. Literally felt pity for the tiger, such a small cage and the sound of the train. Gosh.

My daughter loves capybaras, so, we decided to stop by, since we were near by. And we were very disappointed by the zoo. The zoo is very old, cages are very small and dirty. Poor white tiger is sitting under the little roller coaster and the mechanism of it is very loud and noisy, I could not stand there for even 2 minutes and the tiger is sitting there all the time. I think the zoo is surviving due to the lack of money, they try to attract people by different events like celebration the birthday of capybara. But they have too many problems and need renovations.

My husband and I visited on Sunday 22/06 and I almost left in tears as to the neglect that I witnessed of some of these animals. The temperatures are very hot at the moment with pretty much only hot concrete enclosures and usually so small the animal can barely move or it’s just pacing in distress. I wish I didn’t pay money towards this experience
Jenna S — Google review
It's very obvious this place is privately run and on a very limited budget. They have an ok selection of animals although most of the enclosures border on plain inhumane. This place needs to be modernized in a bad way.
W T — Google review
For a small zoo, it has a lot of animals and a fun little ride. But the animals are kept in tiny cages and looked really sad, so I'm concerned for their welfare.

Worst zoo I’ve been to, left crying from how depressed and upset the animals looked, beautiful animals should never be locked in cages to small for them NEVER! Really needs to be CLOSED DOWN!

Ikeda Zoo made me a bit uncomfortable. We saw à White Tiger, a Lion and a bear in very very tiny enclosure (15m2~) !! How can they be happy physically and mentally in these conditions ? There are a lot of other animals who have a lot of space, so it relieved us a bit. The zoo is big ! I'm sure you can relocated these big animals who need to run, jump and feel a bit more free ! But, I certainly felt that the employees care for all these animal ! I'm sure they love them but, again, the size of some enclosure shocked me... Maybe the Zoo need more money and visitors to provides the animals a better environnement.

It houses a vast collection of over 4,800 ancient art pieces primarily from the Middle and Near East, including Mesopotamian civilizations and ancient Persia. The museum's collection includes earthenware, glass, porcelain mosaics, and its centerpiece is the 'Relief of Protective Spirit, Apukallu,' an Assyrian relief dating back to the ninth century BCE.

The building's exterior has a rugged, stately design. The open spaces inside the building allow natural light to enter from various angles, brightly illuminating the interior. When you enter the central hall on the first floor, be sure to look up into the air, sweep your eyes around, and experience the feeling of being enveloped in light. The building was designed by architect Shinichi Okada, who has also designed the Supreme Court, Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Headquarters, and Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum. The nearby Okayama Prefectural Art Museum is also one of his designs. Photography is not permitted inside the exhibition rooms, but is permitted in the central hall on the first floor and in the "Light Garden" space on the second floor. The special exhibition "Discovering the Wonders of Ancient Egypt! Gifts from the Nile and Hidden Stories" is being held from July 12 to August 31, 2025. The museum focuses on the early discoveries made by Japan's excavations of ancient Egypt, and also screens a video interview with Professor Sakuji Yoshimura. Please note that the permanent exhibition items will not be available for viewing during special exhibitions. While the museum is not particularly large, it is usually uncrowded and you can relax in the luxurious, air-conditioned space. The Momotaro's Karakuri Museum is a playful and interactive museum dedicated to the traditional Japanese folk story of Momotaro, known as the Peach Boy. Located in Okayama Prefecture, it features historical materials related to the tale and interactive attractions such as a haunted house-style tunnel through Onigashima, the Island of Demons. The museum also offers optical illusions and trick art exhibits, including a photo spot where visitors can take pictures with their heads emerging from a peach.
I visited at around 4.30 pm on a Sunday. I almost thought I couldn't go in but we were allowed to. It's useful to note that if you go through the route quickly, it will be around 15-20 minutes. The staff were so friendly in explaining the interactive exhibits. I had lots of fun :)
Wei L — Google review
5 stars solely for the staff who were so enthusiastic about the museum and show you round explaining the different illusions. We didn’t stop laughing the whole way round - they were great. The museum consists of a collection of optical illusions, the scary cave (max 2 times round per person!), and original Momotaro paraphernalia. The museum was overall quite small and we didn’t go in expecting much, but it was adorable, fun and was a great place to pop into for us whilst wandering around Kurashiki. Compared to other ‘similar’ (I don’t think anything compares!) places, it was a little expensive, so not best for those on a strict budget. Also English support is a little limited on the second floor for those that need it. We were the only ones there on a late October Wednesday afternoon. Great for kids, mates, or big Momotaro fans.

We had a great walk/hike on the clearly marked trails around the castle ruins. Such wonderful views of the entire distant area. Purchased (200 yen) a helpful map at the visitor center. We parked at parking lot 7 in the park below the ruins for an additional 2 mile (each way) walk up the fairly graded road, including thru the side marked side trail. It's apparently the oldest castle/gatehouse in Japan! It has been rebuilt but if you are disappointed hearing that and dont want to go anymore, don't be! Because the views are breathtaking! The museum's permanent exhibition, 'The History and Culture of Okayama,' showcases materials depicting the city's natural environment, history, and culture. Additionally, the museum hosts temporary photography and art exhibitions.
The art drawings were incredibly amazing

Nice little museum to learn about the history of okayama. Some were in English. There is a quiet space for you on the same floor which overlooks the okayama Station and areas around it.

I got to see the Ghibli Exhibition. It was a nice and nostalgic experience. Be careful when taking pictures though because photography is only allowed in limited areas.

I was there at 4pm on Sunday May 18, 2025 and the museum was closed. There was a sign on the door that said No current exhibitions. So if they don't have an exhibition the museum may not be open.

The Manekineko Museum, located in the Kinzanji area of Kita Ward, Okayama City, is a cozy and unique museum dedicated to the famous lucky cat figurines. The museum features a permanent exhibition of 700 manekineko figurines made from various materials and in different shapes, including traditional ones from all over Japan and modern artist creations. Visitors can also enjoy temporary exhibitions related to manekineko.
Many lucky cats to see. Must try the hands on painting of the lucky cats especially good fun if you visit with your friends.

Very cute manekineko museum. See a very large collection, and you can also paint your own. It's a little out of the city, but worth the trip. There is a small parking space nearby.
Zhildye V — Google review
Twenty minutes taxi ride to a secluded mountain side in order to visit beckoning cats or Manekineko Museum. It’s housed in Japanese old style two story where so many cats of all sizes, colors and ages are on display. Kind lady gave us some cold drinks and candy after our visit and we also did the one of a kind painting of a selected glazed cat statue. Entrance adult ¥600, if side trip to nearby Kinzanji Temple plus ¥400. The painting experience is ¥1,700. (Taxi from and to Okayama station is ¥8,000.) They also sell lots of cat themed items.
Beth D — Google review
Depends on where you are located as to whether or not it's worth it. If you are in Okayama already and have nothing to do then it's not bad. The train station to get to the museum is two stops from Okayama main station, but it's quite a rural station. There is no taxi phone, so be prepared to call from a cell phone or use an app. Walking is really not an option since you are looking at over an hour walk literally up a mountain. If you REALLY like neko statues then it's good for 30 minutes or so of your time. It's cute, but smaller than it seems in the pictures. Taxi was about $15 there and $15 back to the station plus admission was about $6 a person.
Jason _ — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous. Location is beautiful and there’s a wide assortment of maneki neko from all different ages. The entrance fee is so cheap it almost feels like robbery, and there is free self service tea and a seat to enjoy the view of the mountain within the museum. I would highly recommend the maneki neko painting experience as well, the staff were really helpful and there were many beautiful examples from past visitors. English subtitles are available on all signs. Visited at 11am on a tuesday and we were the only people there for the majority of our visit, however not sure how it is on a weekend. couple things to note: Don’t try to walk, the hill is steep and there is no footpath available. If you do not have a car or license in japan you will have to call a taxi. Also, the museum itself will take around 30mins to 1hr to view, as it is a small building. I personally spent about 45 minutes in the museum and 1hr 30 painting my cat. Not wheelchair accessible, and a very steep staircase to access the second floor. The majority of the exhibits are on the first floor, but please keep this in mind. This is one of my favorite places to visit in Okayama and i hope that many overseas visitors can come to visit the manekineko museum too!!
Kris — Google review
Small but decent size for spending an hour or so.

Lovely manekineko museum, the owners are so nice! The museum is the "smallest museum in Japan" and next door you can paint your own manekineko! Great way to spend a morning or afternoon. The easiest way up and down, is to take a taxi!

Miyama Park in Okayama is a serene and picturesque destination, featuring over 7,000 cherry trees that create a stunning display during the spring season. The park offers various attractions such as walking trails, an English garden, a duck pond, playground equipment, and even a golf course. Visitors can also enjoy the farmers market, fish market, cafes, and restaurants within the park.
Visited here on March 30th when the cherry trees just began to blossom. Many local people came for picnicking. Free parking lot is provided. There are playgrounds not only for kids but also for pets(dogs). The farmers market and local food booths were also very nice.

First of all, I wanna say this park is so huge. There are ponds surrounded by hills. The park area is also spacious. It can be reached only for about 1 hour from Okayama Station by bus. Things to do in this park: 1. Playing on the playground. 2. Ducks and swans feeding. There is a pond, near the playground in where you can give food to ducks and swans. But, you have to bring the ducks food on your own. I saw people brought a pack of bread, and feed the ducks with it. It is also a good place if you are interested in bird photography. 3. Tracking hills. If you enjoy walking and tracking the hills, this is a good place for you. I saw people in outdoor outfit enjoying the nature by tracking the trail. The trail is surrounded by dense canopy, giving the feeling of a forest. 4. Enjoying autumn leaves. I visited this park in autumn season. There are some spots with great autumn leaves scenes. I highly recommended this place for family trip, either with your child or your parents for enjoying nature together. Don't worry about toilets, you can find them easily. The toilet near the park area is equipped with a bidet washlet. Date of visit: 2022.11.22 Time needed for exploring: it's depends on your purpose (such as, taking photos, playing with kids, or tracking), but generally it's around 3 hours.

A nice park with walking trails, duck pond, kids play area, mini golf, dog runs, a farmers market and fish market, a cafe, a restaurant, and more. Free admission to the park; the dog run and mini golf cost ¥500 each. Excellent place to see cherry blossoms in spring. Be sure to visit the English Garden (¥300 admission) if you like gardens >> this is beautiful at any time of the year. Accessible by car or public bus from JR Uno Station.

The Bizen Pottery Museum is a must-visit for pottery enthusiasts and tourists alike. Located near Inbe Station, it showcases around 400,000 works by local potters, many of which are offered at a discounted price. The museum features a wide range of artworks by renowned potters such as Kaneshige Toyo and Fujiwara Kei, as well as pieces by emerging artists.
This is NOT a review of Pottery Museum which is completely torn down and being rebuilt (as of january 2024). The exhibition gallery at the train station building - 3 minute walk - shows a wide range of significant Bizen potters. I saw many beautiful examples, current and past. Kaiyu Cultural Museum, housed in a pseudo western-style building that was once the main structure of the Ushimado Police Station, showcases the iconic boat-shaped and intricately carved Danjiri used in the Ushimado Autumn Festival. The museum also features materials related to cultural exchanges with Korean envoys during the Edo period. Visitors can explore a diorama depicting diplomatic missions to Korea and learn about the festival's history and routes through informative panels.
Great museum to understand past relationship of Korea and missions to Japan several hundred years ago.

(Translated by Google) It's a cute building and I had a chance to tour it. There is a diorama that recreates the procession of the Korean diplomatic mission, and panels introducing the history and route. If you wish, the receptionist will explain it to you. In the back, there were two actual danjiri dolls used in the Ushimado Autumn Festival on display, which I was able to see up close, and I was also able to watch videos of the festival. The building is said to have been a former police station. From the sea side, you can see the cute building and the three-storied pagoda of Honrenji Temple (used as an accommodation for Korean envoys). The inside is small, but there are costumes of Korean envoys, and you can wear them if you wish. The entrance fee is 300 yen and it is located right in front of the Honrenji bus stop. There are two main exhibits; one is about the Korean envoys who passed through here during the Edo period. Ushimado, which flourished as a port for waiting for the wind and the tide since ancient times, has a deep connection with the Korean envoys, and its history is explained in an easy-to-understand manner using dioramas and other materials. The other is the danjiri that has been passed down in Ushimado. Unlike the float-shaped danjiri in the Kinki region, the danjiri here are shaped like boats. In addition to having two real, majestic danjiri boats on display at all times, there is also a video introducing the Ushimado Autumn Festival, where all the danjiri floats line up. Although it may seem that there is little direct connection between these two, there may actually have been a connection between them in many ways, such as the dances offered at festivals wearing clearly Korean-style costumes. This will make you realize once again the depth of Ushimado's history.

Higashiyama Park is a serene and spacious park located near the end of the tram line in Okayama City. The altitude was higher than I expected, so I could see the entire park surroundings. As I sat idly watching the cars and trams passing by, quite a bit of time passed. Actually, it is not a place where tourists come, but it is a place worth visiting at least once if you want to experience the feeling of streetcars. (Translated by Google) This is a large park that stretches north and south across Prefectural Route 28 Ushimado Line. There is a bridge over the prefectural road, and its name is ``Dream Bridge.'' I don't know what the name means. The north side is mostly a natural park with only one playground equipment and swings, and the south side is the main area, or perhaps the area that comes to mind when most people think of ``Higashiyama Park.'' Located below Tamaigu Toshogu Shrine, it is a multi-purpose event park with play equipment and toilets, and in the past animals were also kept there. The southern end of the park is a mysterious spot, with a former breeding house where wooden animals are exhibited, and a ``health promenade'' where you can sometimes hear the screams of people using the park. The wooden animals will make you laugh when you see them in person. The problem is the ``health promenade''. It looks like it's good for your health, but it's a convex sidewalk where you walk barefoot for about 50 meters. People who have problems or weaknesses in their internal organs or body cannot advance even 10 steps when they try to walk. Is there anyone who can do this without difficulty? A promenade called "health" that makes you realize how unhealthy you are and sinks into the depths of anxiety...it's terrifying. There is one thing that you should definitely keep in mind at Higashiyama Park. In Okayama, this stone bench was donated by Rikichi Tsubota, known only to those in the know. Rikichi used the profits he earned while doing business in Daihachiguruma to carry out various charity projects in Okayama City from the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa period, and in a sense he should have become the face of Okayama in place of Momotaro. The most famous donated item is the Kyobashi fire watchtower, followed by the Seikibashi stone bridge. There are several stone benches that still exist in Higashiyama Park, so why not take a moment to reflect on Rikichi Mannai (there are two benches across the fountain, and one bench behind the playground equipment).

Okayama Dome is a versatile venue that hosts various events, from indoor sports to exhibitions. It's also home to Okayama's largest monthly flea market. The spacious area lacks playground equipment but offers hills and ponds for all-age enjoyment. Parents appreciate the benches and rest areas scattered throughout the site, although some find the restroom cleanliness lacking.
We spent a lovely afternoon at the Okayama Dome area near Kitanagase, and I highly recommend it to anyone with young children. I took my 3-year-old son, and he had an amazing time running around and playing. The nearby park is spacious, clean, and safe, with plenty of room for kids to explore and have fun. There are also some shaded areas where parents can relax while keeping an eye on their little ones. The atmosphere is very peaceful, and it's a great place to take a break from the city while still being easily accessible. Whether you're local or just visiting Okayama, this spot is perfect for a family outing!

Park
Taiyonooka Park, located near Ujo High School, offers a pleasant outdoor experience. While the park is in need of some maintenance, such as grass cutting, it provides an enjoyable environment for children over four years old to play. The steep hill and slopes make it a great place for kids to have fun and explore.
Wonderful place for children to play

I really like this park, the entrance is from Ujo highschool, it was difficult to find that, overall good park, need some maintenance like cutting of grass etc. Enjoyable for kids at least 4years old as this is a steep hill, there are slopes.

(Translated by Google) It just so happened that the timing of my trip was right after the reopening. It's a wonderful park. The children were very excited as there was a large amount of play equipment that looked like an amusement park. I envy people who have a park like this nearby. (Translated by Google) I went to play with my children. Not much has changed since I was a child. I guess the only thing is that there is one less slide and the zip line is gone. Instead, there were more wood decks. There are a lot of people on Saturdays and Sundays! R7.4, when I came here for the first time in a while, almost all the play equipment was new. There was quite a long construction period, but a lot has changed over that time. Number 1 was new play equipment like a trampoline. There were quite a few kids lining up, so I didn't get in, but it looked like it would be fun! The dinosaur has been buried in the slide part, but it's still there!

If you have small children, there is plenty of play equipment so they will have fun playing there. Quoted below ・Mitsu Sports Park, a Takase boat park rich in nature Mitsu Sports Park is located in Kita Ward, Okayama City. The ``Relaxation Square'' with a large Takase boat and rare play equipment is a very interesting park. Children are already excited about playing and exploring. Let's have fun while feeling nature and history! Mitsu Sports Park has a park area called ``Relaxation Square'' along with sports facilities such as a heated pool, tennis courts, grounds, and an arena. The play equipment here is a modern version of the Takase boat that was once used in the Asahi River flowing nearby, and includes a slide with some looseness, making it a special piece of play equipment not found in other parks. Adults can have fun together while being surrounded by greenery and feeling nature! The slide was very smooth and the children were very excited. It's nice to have play equipment for small children. The building with the pool and gymnasium is also well maintained, so you can cool off and take a rest. Best of all, there are fewer people than places like Urayasu. (Translated by Google) This was my first visit with my 3 year old child. There is a shallow pool with a depth of 30cm for young children, and most of the children brought their own floats to play with. Although it was a Sunday afternoon, it wasn't too crowded to play or change clothes. However, families were constantly coming in even after 4:00 pm, so it seems to be a popular pool in the city. The changing room was surprisingly new and air-conditioned, and the stuffy feeling was moderate for an outdoor pool. At 250 yen for adults, 100 yen for children, and 70 yen for lockers (no return required), it's a reasonable price considering it's so accessible, and my kids were very satisfied with it, so next time I'd like to buy a float and visit again.

Adult ¥250 Children 2 years old and over - elementary school students ¥100 Junior and senior high school students ¥150 (Up to 2 hours.) 1 hour extension Adult ¥110 Junior and senior high school students ¥70 Child ¥60 *Same price for accompanying persons who do not enter the pool. *Your ticket time will be checked when you leave the venue, so don't lose your ticket! Hat rental ¥100 Purchase ¥500 Locker ¥70 Showers are also free next to the toilets When there are a lot of people, you won't be able to sit on the benches, so we recommend bringing a picnic sheet. Eating and drinking available☺ The larger one is 25m (no floats allowed) Children's pool depth 40cm (floats and balls allowed) The lifeguard is waiting 🅿🚗The parking lot at this sports park is ¥220/hour on weekdays, ¥550/day (24 hours), and ¥330/30 minutes on weekends, so the pool is cheap, but if you have to drive just for that, it will be expensive. Local people often come here by bicycle. The shop that used to be there is no longer there, but if you go towards the Zip Arena, you will find a shop. A natural pool with floating leaves😆 But for some reason, children get ear infections when they enter here, so I wonder if there's not enough chlorine. ? I don't really understand, but I'm curious. . I'm looking forward to next summer (Original)

(Translated by Google) Japan is supposed to be the land of order and discipline, but this pool is the complete opposite: chaos and anarchy reign supreme. If you're a swimmer, avoid this place! I checked online to see if there was a sports pool and the receptionist confirmed that we could swim. But no, in the pools, it's war, a remake of "The Deer Hunter." The children rule, and I had to navigate between them under the stunned gaze of the lifeguards, who wondered what kind of ritual I was performing—probably a dance to invoke Poseidon, they thought. Plus, there were a lot of leaves and twigs in the water, so you wonder if the robot cleans the pool at night. Finally, the changing rooms smelled like sewers. I'm giving it 2 stars because if you're reading this review and you're 10 years old or younger, you'll find what you're looking for in this battlefield. I'm disappointed, but I'm still proud to have managed to swim for 1.5 hours in such conditions. Personally, I'm a regular at Japanese and foreign pools, and this one is worse than the one in Kourou, French Guiana. We must react; the greatness of Japan is at stake. A word to the wise.

There are many tall trees, so leaves fall into the pool. There aren't many benches, so it might be a good idea to bring a mat or chair when it's crowded.
