Ishigaki Yaima Village is a charming recreation of a traditional Okinawan village, nestled on a hill overlooking the picturesque Nagura Bay of Ishigaki Island. This southernmost theme park in Japan features well-preserved Yaeyama houses, some of which are designated as national tangible cultural properties. Visitors can enjoy the serene ambiance while exploring the house-lined streets, trying on traditional Ryukyu kimonos, and painting their own shisha figurines.
This place is highly underrated. We’ve spend a nice day there. You can easily spend 3-4h or more, depending on the activities you do. You can see a traditional dance from the island, feed small squirrel monkeys, and paint your own Shisa statue. It was fun! If you go to the village by bus, I advice to plan ahead, since the last bus back to Ishigaki leaves quite early (otherwise, the nice ladies at the reception can call a taxi for you, but it’s not cheap).

I've been to several recreation villages and always like seeing the old architecture and the reconstructions of the past. This village was a great example of what it would have been like a hundred years ago and it wasn't over crowded with people which was nice. Great place to explore and take the family too.
David B — Google review
An excursion activity of our MSC cruise. The key attraction is squirrel monkeys. They were kept in a huge cage with a lot of space for them to play around & fighting for foods? Surprised to see two mother monkeys have their baby monkey holding their back all the time. It, indeed, looks like & about the side if squirrels.
J.David H — Google review
It costs 1,200yen per adult. The weather was so hot when we went and it was hard to explore without drenching in sweat. So make sure to bring an umbrella if you go on a hot summer day! We got to see the created serpent eagle, and a water buffalo which smelled horrid. The most enjoyable part was seeing the squirrel monkeys, they were so adorable! You need to leave your things before entering as they might grab them. They recommend to only bring in your wallet and phones. We only stayed for a little over an hour. It was not crowded at all.
Quincy Q — Google review
We love visiting this village every time we come to Ishigaki! The historic parts of the park are so interesting to look at! We also really love the squirrel monkeys! We’ve also done the shisa painting in the store and it was so much fun! The teacher gave us a small history lesson on shisa dogs and we were so grateful to learn ! Highly recommend !
Chelsea M — Google review
One place allowing w different type of visit: version 1 you come to discover the architecture of Okinawa and see many type of houses Version Version 2 you come to have fun at the monkey park. It’s small but cool experience for kids and adult

Paradise for animal lovers 😍 This is where you can find the unique local species - squirrel monkey 🐵 Be prepared to get up and close with these cute monkeys! There are also exhibition on the indigenous people's way of life.
Ross C — Google review
It’s nice to visit this place. It’s full of memories and offers both historical and ecological learning experiences. There are villages, small traditional performances, and a path through the mangroves where you can see mudskippers, crabs, squirrels monkeys and even water buffalo. Must try “pork soba” at front restaurant too. So yummy!

Nature & Parks
Banna Park, situated in the heart of Ishigaki Island, is a sprawling nature park named after the 230-meter-high Mt. Banna. The park offers diverse attractions for visitors of all ages, including an 'Adventure Playground' for kids, forested trails, and bird-watching observatories. From April to June, visitors can witness fireflies along the 'Firefly Trail,' while an insect museum showcases the island's unique creepy-crawlies.
There are some observatories. If you rent a car, I highly recommend to drive there to check some spots.
Ki. K — Google review
A very beautiful country park. There’re many good photo taking spots. It also has a huge playground for children.
JAMM C — Google review
Loved Banna Park! The walk around the grounds was perfect on a day with light drizzle. The insect museum was awesome and the staff were so friendly and helpful even though I don’t speak any Japanese. We had a great time. The staff member at the counter informed us of a craft fair going on and I got some amazing nature themed souvenirs.

Banna Park It is the natural beauty of Ishigaki Island and has a vast expanse of vistas, there are many spots where we can enjoy and observe nature on a large area that makes use of the mountains as it is It was difficult to walk thoroughly because it was so wide Banna Park is located on a mountain foothills in Ishigaki. Ishigaki is the second largest island of the Yeayama Islands in Okinawa. With up to 160 islands Banna Park is divided into 5 zones: 1. Natural Forest Views: Paths, bridges, and stairs allow us to walk through Banna Parks' breathtaking nature, only on paved paths. Because if we walk off the path, there is a right to encounter a poisonous wild animal. 2. Passeo Forest, a grassy area where one can observe large butterflies. There are many in this park. In fact, we don't have to walk far to that area but at the entrance. We found a butterfly as big as a palm. And many wild birds 3.The horizon leads us to walk around the summit with a number of landmarks including the Oval Bird Observatory. 4. The Stone Monument Forest: The area surrounding Banna Park, where many stone monuments are on display. 5. Children's Square: The area of Banna Park includes the BMX track and adventure playground surrounded by the beautiful nature of Okinawa. Today we will head to Observation of Nature Forest, part of Banna Park to see the unique nature of Okinawa. Let's go! Here you can see a national park that does not have to pay entrance fees. Free access, free parking

Beautiful park. Large area. You can see a great view of Ishigaki from this park. Greenish area. Best for nature lovers like me. There is a roof, you can take rest there and enjoy the beautiful view while taking rest. Free parking available.

Lovely park. You can go here for a walk, a run, to walk your dog or play with your kids. There’s quite few people so you can relax at your own pace

Nice place once we found it, with good views. Towards dusk we saw several ryuku flying foxes (quite closely) for some good pictures, plus a large stick insect.

Sukuji Beach is a hidden gem on the island, offering a kilometer-long shoreline with fine sand and clear waters. It's an ideal spot for sunbathing and leisurely dips in the shallow beach. The area is equipped with amenities like public changing rooms, showers, and restrooms for visitors' convenience. Snorkeling enthusiasts can explore the diverse marine life, including hard corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, and manta rays.
A small, quiet beach close to the famous Kabira Bay with stunningly clear waters. Never crowded, ideal for families with children. Free parking, showers, toilets and shop. No pushy tourist traps - just pure charm.
T. G — Google review
Scenic but st low tide not even worth going in. The net to protect from stingers is then flat on the ground. Nice shaded setting.
Ian M — Google review
Ample parking, lots of trees, bathrooms for bathing with coins for children, and ideal because the beach is shallow, there is a net for fencing, but it's a shame that the water is cloudy and there are speakers making a lot of noise, I prefer silence with the sound of nature.
SAPPHIRE S — Google review
Truly one of the best ever beaches in Ishigaki, if you only have time for one beach, come to this one. There's ample free and safe parking, super clean enclosed showers for just 100Y, and plenty of free hoses for you to clean your feet. Toilets are free and super clean too! Kudos to the volunteers and staff for keeping this beach perfect. Best part is there are trees to provide ample shade in the morning.
M.Y Y — Google review
Very nice beach, with nets to protect swimmers from jellyfish. There are showers ( at a symbolic price of 100¥) and small stalls selling anything from swimming trunks ( I got one there, as I forgot mine in the hotel) to bento boxes, shaved ice cones and drinks. A store rent sport equipment, such as SUPs. There are few speakers across the beach that softly broadcast Okinawan and Hawaiian style music. This beach seems extremely popular amongst families with small children, because of the shallow waters.
Gilberto B — Google review
Nice beach with lots of shade. You can use the showers for 100 yen per day. There are small shops for drinks and food. At low tide its not possible to swim as the stingernet is on the sand. But come later afternoon and its perfect.
Jeanette S — Google review
Flat water, it's save to swim in the net. Good panoramic view and cheap shower's (100yen)
Tim H — Google review
Beautiful beach. The color of the water is breathtaking. Just wow during sunset. It was so mesmerizing. There is a swing. You can enjoy the view while sitting on the swing. Best place for some great photography! Washroom and free parking available.

Beach
Yonehara Beach, located on Ishigaki Island, is a stunning white sand beach surrounded by lush greenery and bathed by turquoise waters with vibrant coral reefs. It's known as one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, offering a chance to observe a diverse range of hard corals and tropical marine life including colorful fish, sea turtles, and manta rays. However, caution is advised due to rip currents and jellyfish in some areas.
BEST snorkeling I’ve had ever. We went around 4pm in the afternoon in November. Parking lot was closed so we parked st the nearby community center. The water remains very shallow quite far (I could stand), but there were so much seaweed and corals. I saw two sea snakes and a sea turtle!
Jia Y — Google review
We parked at the camping ground (500 yen) which meant a significant walk along the beach to the safe snorkelling area. Coral Disappointing but good fish life. At mid tide it was challenging to find a passage through the corals and I would recommend going at high tide or reasonably close to that.
Ian M — Google review
30mins from the port area by cab. Came on a standard week day around 10am and there was a few people. Car park for around 30 cars from what I saw atb1500 yen. shop for rental Google etc and a shower place to shower after the ocean. The beach it self had quite a few coral on it so wasn't easy to walk on without slippers. Water is crystal clear. Definitely a great place to snorkel
Boss — Google review
The ocean was very clear, beautiful and had loads of tropical fish swimming even in the shallow areas. The sand is on the rough side with some larger rocks, so I suggest bringing water shoes for comfort. Overall very peaceful beach, and suggest for anyone who loves snorkeling.
Hibiscus — Google review
Excellent experience swimming with many kinds of tropical fish and coral reefs even near the shore! No wonder many people doing snorkelling there. There is a shop right beside the parking lot where you can rent the snorkelling equipment. Will definitely go there again!!
麵豉湯 — Google review
Nice beach overall. Low tide isn’t great but the water is very clear and clean. Beach should be cleaned more often as there are some plastics around.
Pierre R — Google review
The best beach for snorkelling. The fishes are immediately visible within few steps into the water. I believe we were during the low tide so most of the corals were almost near the surface of water making it difficult to snorkel over them. But there were variety of fishes and absolutely beautiful corals. The shower and changing room facilities were basic. Parking available for 500 yen whole day. Snorkelling gear, parasols and other items can be rented there. Definitely a must visit to experience the true ocean life of Ishigaki!
Nirmal — Google review
A very lovely beach for snorkeling, and one of my best experiences, it is recommended to go as early as possible before the water level decreases. Very beautiful and colorful fish can be encountered and seen so closely. There are shops from where you can borrow all the necessary equipments for snorkeling and showers as well.

5Ishigaki Island Sunset Beach

Beach
Ishigaki Island Sunset Beach is a picturesque white sand beach located on the northwest coast of the island. It offers various water sports activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and fun watersports like banana boats, wakeboards, and jet skis. The beach is known for its stunning sunset views and is a popular spot to watch the golden hours of the evening. Visitors can also enjoy Stand Up Paddle (SUP) trips to untouched snorkeling spots in the area.
Favorite beach in Ishigaki of the 6 visited. Yes it's more expensive - starting from the 500 yen shower or the 2000 parasol but; at the time of this visit (July 2024) it was by far the most agréable clean and prettiest yet comfortable white sand beach. It's not that packed either - maybe a little far from downtown but oh so worth it.
Charlie P — Google review
As many reviews have mentioned, parking at this beach is not free—so if you’re looking for a free beach, this isn’t the one. This is a privately operated beach managed by locals, almost like a swimming pool setup. Here’s the breakdown of costs: - **¥500 for parking** - **¥2000 for an umbrella** (optional) - **¥500 for a chair** (optional) - **¥500 for a shower per person** (optional) We opted for the umbrella but skipped the chair. We also didn’t use the showers afterward and just drove straight back to our hotel. That said, we still chose to visit because the beach is beautiful, quiet, and not crowded. You’re essentially paying extra for some level of privacy, and there’s a lifeguard on duty as well. You can also rent equipment for water activities (though we didn’t). The beach itself is clean, with very clear water. We snorkeled there and saw plenty of small fish. The water is pretty shallow within the safety net, making it great for snorkeling or swimming. If you don’t mind spending a little extra for a quieter, less crowded experience, this is definitely a great option!
Lawrence C — Google review
Beatiful small beach in the countryside. When we arrived there it was bit crowded, but the beach is very clean and there a lot of lifeguards around. Especially when you plan on Snorkeling its a perfect Location, because in their circumference there are many reefs with plenty different fish.
Max “ — Google review
Very remote and thus not crowded. It's beautiful, but the prices are steep. Parking 500. Sun umbrella is 2000, and each chair 1500. Showers and toilet 500 per person. Go here and use your own gear as much a as you have it.
Fabien G — Google review
Ishigaki Sunset Beach is absolutely beautiful, with clear water, gentle waves, and a relaxed vibe that make it a standout spot on the island. The stretch of soft sand is perfect for swimming and enjoying vibrant sunsets—truly a fantastic place for a laid-back afternoon or evening. The biggest downside is the paid parking, which is 500 yen per vehicle, regardless of how long you stay. If just stopping by for a quick look, the cost may not feel worthwhile compared to other free-viewpoints on Ishigaki. However, if planning to swim, relax, or try water activities, the facilities like showers and changing rooms make the paid parking more justified. And actually beware toilets do cost extra money too Overall, for those seeking a beautiful beach experience and the chance to catch a stunning sunset, this spot delivers. Just be aware the parking and amenities fee might not suit short, casual visits focused on sightseeing only. I would rate 3.5 stars
Bee T — Google review
Quiet beautiful beach good for swimming and day dreaming. Has umbrellas and a few other beach toys available to rent.
Trevor S — Google review
Nice place to visit only when sunny day Don’t come if cloudy and windy. Just park by the road side
FaiChu — Google review
The beach itself is nice! There's a netted off area to swim in, the sand is soft and it's a nice little day out. Average rating due to it costing a lot to visit! ¥400 to park, plus ¥400 to use the shower! Water is ¥200 a bottle. It seems a little overpriced for a public beach, but with little to chose from on this island, I guess they can get away with it! What a shame (and a sham! Lol)

Sunset Beach in Ishigaki is a perfect spot for a weekend getaway, offering water sports, swimming, and sandy strips with beach chair and umbrella rentals. The area also has snorkel rentals and showers available. Yonehara Beach is ideal for snorkeling while Sunset Beach is nestled in a picturesque cove. Accessible via a narrow road from Prefectural Route 206, the beach features white sand and well-equipped facilities including showers, changing rooms, and parking.
This beach is bananas. Hands down, the best beach on Ishigaki island we've come across. Quiet and beautiful beach with clear water. Parasol rental will set you back 2k yen while parking is 400 yen.
David A — Google review
Beautiful soft sand and shallow water with a few corals and fish. Good for families and children who need facilities such as toilets and showers. Be prepared to pay for parking, beach entrance (500 per adult 300 per child under 12) and pay again for the toilet shower facilities (500 yen) facilities are basic.
Family C — Google review
There is a fare of 500¥ per person to use the shower and toilets, but you get a wonderful, relatively empty beach that seems like a dream. Toilets and showers a bit out of date. They also offer some activities. It's definitely a recommend and if you don't to pay that fare just enter elsewhere and walk to it. If u can spend this much on your trip then 500¥ shouldn't be an issue (especially since it's private property).
Alex — Google review
The beach was not crowded when we went at 4:30pm. We paid 500yen for parking and the staff told us we’ll have to leave by 5:30pm. We didn’t know there was a closing time?! Also, it costs 500yen for shower or toilet which we thought it was too pricey. Staff started reminding people it’s time to leave by 5:15pm. Overall, despite only having an hour, we had a great time. We were able to see some fish and the sand was soft and didn’t have much rocks.
Quincy Q — Google review
A beautiful sandy beach. For parking and using the toilet and/or shower you have to pay though. The only thing that we would have wished for would have been that they clean the beach of empty bottles and other debris that has been washed up on the beach.
Carsten B — Google review
This is NOT a good beach for snorkeling. Nothing but dead coral and the odd small fish. The lifeguard chased me in a jet ski to tell me to come back when I tried to find ANYTHING interesting to see. It is a beautiful beach and amazing sand, great place for young kids. But if you like snorkeling stick to Yonehara.
Diarmaid L — Google review
Nice little beach. But it costs 500 yen for parking, and another 500 yen per person to enter to the beach and shower. The wave was quite strong, so be careful if you are not a good swimmer.
Gary L — Google review
Need to pay 500jpy for the parking. That's ok. But in there there is a small delimited zone where you can stay and swim, so no freedom in paradise where there are very cool spots in the other sides of the rocks and places to explore. They also advice you to wear lifevest when swimming? If you parked the car in there you have to leave at 6 because they close the parking and at 5:45 a man comes to you asking you to leave, so no sunset in sunset beach. Also in the delimited are there is nothing to see when snorkeling, however it looks like there are some coral out there. The jungle entrance path is nice though.

Beautiful beach with a swimming area. We brought our own blanket and towels and set up on the beach by the hotel chairs. Luckily there were a few clouds to block the sun at times.

Below the reach of extravagant resorts such as Club Med, this private beach offers an exclusive experience for those seeking a touch of a little luxury. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the unspoilt surroundings, provides the perfect escape for those looking to indulge in a little extravagance. It's a place where you can enjoy a peaceful retreat with a touch of first class service, making it a hidden gem for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Beautiful place to watch the sunset! The resort played music in the background and had a bubble blowing machine, making the vibe very romantic. Looks like a perfect place for a proposal.

Fusaki beach is a private beach of Fusaki Resort. Although it’s a private beach, it’s open for public use. It’s said to be one of the best sunset viewing spot in ishigaki.
JAMM C — Google review
This was a fun beach to bike to. You can try to find star sand here, but I found it impossible! There are some cute swings and ropes for kids (or adults) to play on😂
Indigo G — Google review
Private beach but open to everyone. Sand is artificial, water is artificial (in a way) and loud music is playing nearby... Facilities surcharge and very limited shades. After seeing the sunset, only possible to get out with a taxi. Somehow the sky isn't blue either, along with the seawater...
Han C — Google review
An absolutely beautiful beach with a resort nearby. A great place to enjoy a swim in the large fenced area (free of jellyfish) or a walk along the beach or pier. Also, feel free to take advantage of the bar and seating the resort offers nearby. This beach features a spectacular view of the sunrise or sunset. Be mindful to wear flip flops on the beach as the sand is littered with crushed, sharp coral bits. Only drawback, but overall an amazing beach with beautiful views.
Jay O — Google review
A very well equipped beach belongings to the nearby hotel/resort. There are nets protecting from jellyfish. The swimming area is wide and deep at the far end, and it also suitable for snorkeling, with a couple of large rocks hosting colorful varieties of fish. The beach has parasols and sun lounges (charges apply for non resident guests) and a good bar. Definitely a top choice for convenience.

The lighthouse is set against a backdrop of beautiful coral reefs, making it a picturesque spot to visit. Although there is limited parking available, visitors can still enjoy walking around the area and taking in the breathtaking scenery.
The lighthouse itself is small and rather underwhelming, but the scenario surrounding it is like taken straight out of a Ghibli movie! A small parking spot with vending machines and. Lean toilets. Follow the pathway to the «Lovers’ light house» and alsoyou can follow the path to the top for a great view of the area. The light house is closed for public visitors.

The viewing platform offers a sense of hidden adventure, with strong winds adding to the dramatic atmosphere. The vast panoramic view will lift your spirits. It's a bit of a drive, but well worth it.

Nice views even in the low tide. Really good ice cream from the food truck on the lower parking (left side of the road).
Aida Z — Google review
My wife and I really enjoyed visiting here and seeing the wonderful view of the ocean and cliffs. I think original it was just a local light house that became a sight seeing spot. The parking is limited so you might have to wait a few minutes for someone to leave. And there were a good amount of tourists there as well. Over all though a pretty solid spot to visit.
David B — Google review
Beautiful view in the day and the perfect Spot to watch to Sunrise early in the morning. Between 11am and 6pm the food stand nearby offers delicious Snacks and Drinks. The lighthouse has Parkinson spaces and a few vendingmachines. There is a toilet though without sope. It is rather hard to reach if you do not have a car or are staying close by. There are only three Busses in this area per day

Cape Hirakubozaki, the northernmost tip of Ishigaki Island, offers sweeping ocean vistas and vivid blue sky that truly take your breath away. The white lighthouse stands proudly atop lush green cliffs, inviting visitors to capture iconic photos with the endless sea as a backdrop. The air feels extra fresh here, and the scenery has a powerful sense of openness and remoteness. The drive itself is scenic, winding past pasturelands and occasional glimpses of the coast before reaching the cape. Most travelers spend about 15–30 minutes, soaking in the views and snapping commemorative photos, especially around the wooden northernmost-marker. Perfect for landscape lovers, couples, and anyone wanting to experience Ishigaki’s wild edge. The view changes beautifully with the weather—on clear days, the sea’s colors are especially dazzling, and it’s also a great stargazing spot due to minimal city lights. Overall, Cape Hirakubozaki is a must-visit for its crisp air, spectacular views, and the simple awe of standing at the island’s farthest point north—completely worth the drive up for anyone seeking a memorable panorama.

It was a little windy the day we went, which made it an easy walk up to the lighthouse. Not enough parking area. Great view

Hirakubozaki, also known as Cape Hirakubo, is Ishigaki's most northern point and a picturesque, unspoiled area of the island. At the tip of the cape stands the iconic white Hirakubozaki Lighthouse, offering panoramic views of the ocean, mountains, and grasslands where cattle graze. The crystal-clear waters below reveal coral reefs and a deep drop-off into sapphire-colored seas.
It took about an hour drive from the south part of the island, but absolutely worth it. The view is breathtaking, a must-visit spot to see the clear blue sea.

Beautiful view at the northernmost point of the island. Very easy walking path from the parking area, which also has vending machines and toilets. The drive to the point was very scenic and beautiful as well!

The view & THE ICE CREAM. As is being repeated in the reviews - yes the view is absolutely amazing. But so is the ice cream ! In stead of driving to the top and fight for the scarce parking, stop at the parking 40mtrs below and enjoy the great ice cream served by the very nice lady from her food truck (you can get a burger or a beer as well!) It is worth it!!

This area is located in the north of the island and takes about an hour to drive to. If you have the time, it's definitely worth a visit during your trip. The scenery and attractions make it a lovely spot to explore!

If you’re staying in Ishigaki island this is definitely a spot you have to check out. The scenery is so beautiful and it helps if it’s a sunny day. This is the northern most point on Ishigaki island. Parking can be a bit tricky though if you’re driving as there are only like 5 parking spots in the actual lot.

Located in the middle of northern Ishigaki Island, Tamatorizaki Observation Platform offers stunning panoramic views of the bay, the reef, and lush surroundings. It is situated on a hill, providing visitors with a wide view of the beautiful blue sky and Okinawan ocean. Additionally, nearby attractions include the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory on Mt.
Wow, simply beautiful. Large parking area and a long stroll to observation deck. Elevated view, many stairs. Also amazing flora and hiking paths requiring moderate to strenuous abilities. Also pretty good views from the parking area if you have restrictions. Our guide Yurika was SO kind and shared her vast knowledge of Okinawa, her love of people and her recipes. Thank you Yuri!

Maybe because it was a cloudy day, there weren't many people around. There's no parking fee, and there aren't really any convenience facilities nearby. However, the overall natural scenery and the driving route are so beautiful that I highly recommend it.
Mawoo G — Google review
Amazing views looking both north and south along the east coast of the island. The brush and trees have been cut back so the views are unimpeded. There is also a very nice amount of landscaping and flowers with paved paths to explore. Definitely worth stopping to visit if you're in the area.

**Service:** Facilities are neat and convenient with free parking and clean restrooms. The site is well maintained and accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. **Ambiance:** Quiet and peaceful with expansive panoramic sea views. The fresh ocean breeze adds to the relaxing atmosphere, perfect for a serene break. **Recommendation:** Ideal for travelers who appreciate nature and scenic beauty. Couples, families, and solo explorers will enjoy the 180° to 360° coastal views, especially at sunrise or sunset when the colors are stunning. **Overall review** 玉取崎展望台 is a top must-visit on Ishigaki Island, offering breathtaking ocean panoramas in a calm and accessible setting. Ishigaki City Public Market is a bustling local market offering a wide range of products, from food and drinks to souvenirs. Visitors can explore the market's selection of local seafood, meats, and produce, including Ishigaki wagyu and other specialty foods. Additionally, the market features unique souvenirs such as Shisa Pottery, Ryukyu glassware, and colorful woven fabrics from Yaeyama.
This street is the main shopping area on the island, featuring a variety of shops. It’s convenient to grab souvenirs at the tax-free store, where you can find unique items without the extra tax. It’s a great spot to pick up gifts and mementos from your visit!

As a tourist, this is the one place you will end up! ‘Nuff said! A lot of shops sell more or less the same: souvernirs and island produce (this summer I saw that craft beer and salt was rather hot items, and I recommend both🤣) There are a lot of nearby restaurants and inside the shopping mall its also a food court which is rather good. Locals dont go here, but they do frequent the bars and restaurants round the corners. There is also a third floor here with «authentic» items… wonder what that is, because when I was here they had closed the floor gor the evening.

Ishigaki Stalactite Cave is a massive natural cavern on Ishigaki-jima, offering a mesmerizing display of stalactites illuminated with playful lighting. The island is easily accessible from major cities in Japan, making it an ideal escape to immerse in preserved nature. Accommodation options range from luxurious resorts with sea views to traditional Japanese apartments and inns for a more authentic experience.
**About this place:** Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave is a natural wonder carved over 200,000 years, famous for its wild, imaginative rock formations like creatures, Buddha figures, and even Totoro shapes. Each turn reveals new surprises, and the cave extends much deeper and wider than most limestone caves across Japan. ——————— **Scene and views:** The interior is vast, featuring dramatic stalactites and stalagmites illuminated by vibrant rainbow lights. Some sections look like sculpted curtains or pillars, blending white calcite with colorful reflections for astonishing visual appeal. ——————— **Atmosphere** Walking inside feels almost magical, with cool, humid air enveloping visitors as ambient lights and shadows build a dreamlike mood. Natural silence and themed installations amplify both relaxation and curiosity. ——————— **Recommendation:** Ideal for families, solo travelers, and anyone with an active imagination – the cave is a creative playground for visual exploration. Art lovers and photographers will especially appreciate the spectacle and endless shapes inviting interpretation. ——————— **Overall review:** Compared to other caves in Japan, Ishigaki’s formation variety and scale stand out – it’s easy to lose track of time exploring all the nooks. The cave could be even more popular with improved design and modern touches, but its raw nature offers a refreshing authentic experience. Unforgettable for anyone who enjoys discovering the extraordinary hidden beneath the earth. ———————

Such a beautiful stalactite cave, worth visiting if you have spare time. It is around 3km long, and is the 7th longest stalactite cave in Japan. The stalactite looks even better in real life than on photo. They also showcased coconut crab and butterfly womb. Before you leave, check out the nice souvenir shop. I rented a bike and rode 30min to reach the cave.
Ross C — Google review
Went on my own and is a must visit. Caught the Bus no. 8 from the Port Bus Terminal. Took about 15 minutes on the bus and then walk about 10 minutes. Not complicated to go at all on your own. It took about to 30 minutes to walk through the cave leisurely and is comparable to the Stalactite Cave in Valencia with the exception of the in Cave pond in Valencia. The only thing is make sure you finish the visit and get back to the bus stop by 2:00 pm because the no. 8 bus back to the port bus station runs only twice a day. If you finished early, and want to catch the bus back but you want to eat something, no problem. The return bus station is right by Ikkyu Restaurant.
KW L — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit to Ishigaki Caves! The walk through the formations was pleasant, and I particularly liked being able to explore independently. Even though the cave tour doesn't take very long, it's a worthwhile and relaxing way to pass some time. Don't miss the restaurant and shop, they're both excellent!

We came to the cave by taxi, so this part was easy 🙂 (paid 1500 JPY from Comfort hotel) We paid 1200 JPY for one ticket. The cave is well-organised, maybe even too much😅. Toujin Tomb, a Chinese-style tomb constructed in 1971, serves as a memorial for 120 Chinese laborers who tragically lost their lives in 1852. Originally part of a group of nearly 400 individuals being transported from Amoy to California, the laborers found themselves shipwrecked off the coast of Ishigaki due to a reef. Following mistreatment by the ship's crew, they sought refuge on the island and were provided shelter and protection by the locals.
Very Chinese influenced tomb with very detailed art. The signs are in Japanese. There are other movements on the site. Most are in Japanese only. The one with the tribute to 3 Americans who died is in English. It was really heartfelt to read about the history. You realize how far the WWII was felt on all the islands and why the Japanese strove for world peace. Free. Parking on the side. Has bathrooms on site.
Yuuki A — Google review
The memorial to three U.S. Naval aviators is located here. The plaque describes their capture and execution by Japanese troops during WW2. Two of the men were beheaded and the third was tortured and used for bayonet practice, all in violation of international human rights law and the law of war. The site is a poignant reminder of the horror of war and the lessons we can learn from the sins of previous generations.

Ishigaki Shiritsu Yaeyama Museum, established in 1972, showcases the history and culture of the Yaeyama Islands. The museum features a diverse collection of local crafts, including traditional boats, festival shiisa masks, textiles, and scale models of traditional architecture. Visitors can also explore archeological finds and historic documents. Additionally, seasonal exhibitions are held throughout the year.
It's a small museum but packed with a wide range of Yaeyama traditions from pre-history to the daily life of Yaeyama Islanders. It's a fun place to see if you are a big fan of history and want to know more about Yaeyama traditions. Most explanations are in Japanese, but they put some books to explain a little in English. It is a good place to visit in the rain. They have three-car parking spaces directly in front of the main entrance. The ticket price is ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for kids. (August 2024)

Super interesting museum! I went on a rainy day, and it was pretty chilly inside. There’s lots to see in the museum for how small it looks!! The exhibits themselves all have Japanese labels, but there are little stands situated around the museum with English and Chinese booklets explaining the exact same things. For 200 yen, definitely worth the 1-1.5 hours I spent there!

Mostly a collection of objects from the ancient era, with a few simple displays about local customs, practices etc. There was a booklet with English translations that had one or two interesting titbits but the museum was organized in a pretty haphazard manner overall. Kondoi Beach, located on Taketomi Island in Okinawa Prefecture, is renowned for its gentle slope and fine white sands. The emerald green waters with a shallow sandy floor make it the best beach on the island. Visitors can enjoy laying out in the sun on the large white sand beach and swimming in warm waters during high tide. However, caution is advised as strong currents and poisonous creatures like Habu Jellyfish are present from June to October.
If you’re looking for peace, beauty and serenity, this is the beach for you! Gentle shallow waters that is crystal clear with nary a person in sight! Clear views of nearby islands with sparkling hues of blue and green for a far as your eyes can see. Been to many beautiful beaches all over the world and this has got to be one of the best kept secrets. Hats off to the locals for maintaining the natural beauty of this heavenly place.

One of the most beautiful beaches you can enjoy in Okinawa, specifically in Taketomi Island! We arrived at 12pm by ferry, immediately managed to be comfortably whisked away in a minivan to a nearby bike rental shop. And paid for a full day bike rental for 2000Y (shop closes at 5pm) and cycled to the pier and the beach. The beach is fantastic, you can wade to the sandbar during low tide and enjoy the afternoon with the waves around you.

So pretty when you come during low tide! The sandbanks extend for kilometers and the corals come up above the surface. There are so many fish and birds and is very untouched from nature. The view of the neighboring Iriomote is also very beautiful. Definitely reccomend coming.

This beautiful beach alone is worth the trip to Taketomi Island! Clean, beautiful sand, water relatively deep compared to many other beaches in the area. Small park with toilets, changing rooms, and benches in the shade. On this beach, crows are particularly comfortable getting into your backpacks looking for food. The signs will remind you of this.

The grassy area surrounding the tower adds to its serene atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.
A young man in an oxcart told me it was "Taketomi Skytree." Its existence is a mystery in itself, but it's intriguing. I think it probably serves as something like a "morning assembly platform". I was able to climb it back then, but is it no longer possible?

Kaiji Beach, also known as "Hoshizuna Beach," is a picturesque tree-lined beach where visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls and search for tiny star-shaped shells along the shoreline. Located about 9 minutes on foot from Kondoi Beach on the south side, this beach is famous for its unique star sand.
This was a nice place to visit, but if you are expecting to find star sand- go pound sand because it is virtually impossible to find… plus you can’t take it with you if you do find it. There is a guy who sells a small vial of star sand for ¥500. The beach does have a cute swing for Insta pics. Overall, I would bike here again just to enjoy the views.

Easy to get to. The sandbar is walkable at low tide.

Small but nice place. Stay around 30 minutes here and difficult to find the "star" sands. Anyway, you can still buy a small bottle of sands from the shop nearby. =)

Nishi Pier, also known as West Pier, is a historic structure located on the western side of Taketomi Island in Japan. Built in 1938, it was originally used for transporting people to cultivate rice plants on neighboring islands. Today, it has become a popular spot for tourists to witness breathtaking sunsets and stargazing opportunities.
They recently repaved the pier so it looks new and clean. The views and vistas are very pretty and definitely worth stopping by if you’re taking a trip to Taketomi Island. There are gonna be people there who will take photos incessantly though so be patient.

Big concrete pier next to sandy beaches. Went for a dip in the ocean. You can’t really walk along the shore from here but it was nice and quiet and I had the place to myself 🥰

Beaches
Maesato Beach is a picturesque spot on Ishigaki Island, known for its azure waters and white sand. It's backed by the modern ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort, offering guests direct access to the beach. The area is celebrated for its rare blue coral reef of Shiraho, making it one of Japan's best diving spots. Visitors can enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the super clear water or take a walk along the coast during both sunshine and sunset.
I'd your a hotel guest at the ana hotel. This beach I would say is the best of beaches I've visited. I haven't found many rocks. And there are even people that I've seen who swim around taking rocks and garbage out of the ocean. And beach. And personally I've not seen garbage on the beach. So if your staying at the ana hotel, which is also very good. I would definitely recommend going here. Also just for context I belive it wins over the beaches at the main Okinawa island and beaches at Thailand especially over the surin beach. Also the night sky is beautiful, and there are lots of nice small cute hermit crabs at night or big, huge ones closer to the forest.
Ray — Google review
Beautiful beach with swimming area, floating water playground and lifeguard. We rented chairs and an umbrella from the hotel beach staff and stayed all day. The floating water playground, umbrella and chairs are an additional charge of your not a hotel guest. The beach area has no shade. The swimming area a large and the water is warm. We wear water shoes to avoid rocks and shells in the water.

Nestled along the stunning coastline, this beach next to ANA Intercontinental Hotel is a vibrant hub of activity and relaxation. The soft white sands stretch along the shore, creating a picturesque setting for beachgoers. There is a floating water park that promises endless fun. Colorful inflatable structures bob on the water, enticing adventurous spirits to climb, jump, and slide. Nearby, a sign informs visitors about rental options for parasols and chairs, ensuring everyone can find comfort under the sun. The beach is part of the luxurious ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort, blending relaxation with upscale amenities. Guests can indulge in beachside services, enhancing their experience with refreshments and leisure activities. The atmosphere is lively, with people engaging in beach games, swimming, and soaking up the serene surroundings.

Nice beach, comfortable with full amenities also kids playground. There is a store close by and the water is shallow and warm in October.

Shiraho Beach is a serene and picturesque destination offering glass-bottom boat trips, snorkeling, and diving opportunities to explore its extensive blue coral reefs. It is known for its well-tended and supervised environment, making it ideal for families with young children. The beach boasts over 120 varieties of corals, including the impressive stone coral, the largest in the northern hemisphere. While not suitable for swimming due to its wild nature and large stones, it offers a unique setting for photography enthusiasts.
Quiet, peaceful, a few families and local people enjoying the beach and warm water. There are only 4 official parking spaces, but several people parked around the covered area.
Saige S — Google review
The parking space is limited, but it's more appealing because it's not crowded with visitors. Caution: You have to go through residential areas, so watch out for people who might suddenly appear!
Mawoo G — Google review
I spent my time here until I waited for the flight on the last day of my trip to Ishigaki Island. It was the best on the pristine beach with nothing.
Bsntb 0 — Google review
**scenery and view:** Open horizon, tranquil blue water, unique rocks forming shapes in the sea… but wayyy too hot. Beautiful view but I did not stay long **Recommendation:** Ideal for travelers seeking a secluded natural spot for swimming, casual walks, and underwater coral exploration. The rock-arranged "stone dock" in the water gives a special identity to this coast—perfect for those wanting something different from busier tourist beaches. It's particularly suitable for swimmers and snorkelers, with calm, shallow waters protected by the reef. However, bring water shoes for comfort, as the shore is rocky and coral pieces abound. Sunbathers and those preferring pristine sand may wish to try other beaches, but nature lovers and families will find the peaceful vibe appealing. **Overall review** Reaching Shiraho Beach requires a walk down a village road, adding a quaint touch to the adventure. The signature stone dock forms a distinct view not seen elsewhere, making this spot memorable if only for its scenery and the quiet sound of gentle waves. Facilities are limited and there's some beach debris, which affects the overall impression. Local charm shines through, though the place is more raw than polished—best enjoyed as a swimming spot or for those intrigued by native coral reefs. A true slice of Ishigaki.
Bee T — Google review
Coral beach sand and shallow lagoon like sea. Easy to swim from shore. Facilities available.
Mick C — Google review
A very quiet breach near a residential area. It has a lot of coral and perfect for a stroll along the beach. Picturesque and beautiful, we stayed here for an hour before our flight as it was close to the airport. The kids were very happy to look at the collection of coral and shells on the beach. There are four very small parking spaces and it fills up quickly, but the beach is relatively quiet.
Mark F — Google review
Mixed feelings about the beach. On one hand you can swim close to where the toilets are, but there is not much to see snorkeling wise- the water was murky, the fish were shy, coral was here and there and not interesting, mostly dying. To actually see something you have to swim far far far into the sea. If you move to the left (closer towards the airport) its a bit easier to reach a more interesting part, but it's "not allowed" to swim there, as it is supposed to be a protected area, which would be fine, if there weren't fisherman, if there weren't tour boats doing trips... The whole beach really is quite dirty, with garbage and plastic everywhere. It's a shame noone cleans up and cares more about the beach. For snorkelling definitely recommend yonehara a lot more.
Monika P — Google review
The beach has a beautiful stretch of sand, but its main draw is the collection of coral. The area is home to more than 70 kinds of corals, including a large community of blue corals said to be the oldest and largest in the northern hemisphere.

The Blue Cave, located on Ishigaki Island, is a stunning limestone sea cave renowned for its luminous waters, perfect for snorkeling and diving. Accessible by land during low tide, the area offers shallow ocean waters with gentle waves and pool-like formations ideal for snorkeling practice. While some visitors found it challenging to reach without a tour guide due to safety concerns raised by locals, others enjoyed the flexibility of exploring the site independently.
Very nice cave facing the sea but it's nothing compared to the amazing snorkeling site Infront of the cave. You cannot really snorkel in the cave but you can walk around for around 10 minutes looking for sea snakes, coconut crabs and bats. The snorkeling site Infront is absolutely beautiful! Lots of sea turtles, reef sharks, corals and huge amount of fish. It's a bit complicated to snorkel if you do not know the place so taking a tour is recommended. Try to avoid the big tours companies as thy are quite bad and go with huge amount of people for only about 30 min in the water. Try to avoid stepping on coral and use reef safe sun screen!
Discover I — Google review
Interesting place, although it's smaller than I thought. The most adventurous part is getting there: First you need to find the small dirt road (exactly opposite the palm tree monument Park), then you need to travel it downwards without damaging your car from the underside (quite rocky), then a short walk to the really nice beach. From there you wade through the water towards the right side (watch the tide, best go at lowest tide and wear water shoes!) The cave is after the largest cliff, quite nice, and there is another beach a bit farther. With kids, I'd only go at lowest tide and with no wind from northeast. We were in over our waist today, could manage with good shoes but it was an adventure because of wind and waves.
Daniela B — Google review
Beautiful place to spend the day (but only one restaurant close by and no shops, so bring what you need!). Very interesting caves behind the blue caves, too, with giant stalagmites. Lots of lovely little fish and sea cucumbers (and in deeper water we saw many people snorkelling). Don't walk in the seaweed, though! Do you see the picture? I almost stepped on it... a very camouflaged and highly toxic 2.5ft long seasnake! Just stay on the sandy bits and don't be deterred by snakes (just cautious). It it is definitely worth a visit!
K S — Google review
It's a very beautiful area, like some others said the cave is cool to see but what is really worth it is the snorkeling just in front ! We spent the day in the water, so much fishes and coral 🪸 (we even saw Nemo 😁). You totally don't need a tour guide, just go there with Google maps you'll arrive on the beach just next to it. You can walk to the cave or start snorkel already. We went on low tide, it seems the best plan. Don't forget your drinks/food and a shirt to go in the water! (I got cooked 🌞) Enjoy!
Sacha D — Google review
Parked west of the blue cave on a narrow street then we saw the path with sugarcane on the right side as in the photo. Down the staircase and following the short trail (rocky) then when it splits into two options, take the right turn towards blue cave. Walk towards your right when facing the sea in ankle deep water slowly and you'll see the cave! You can do this without a guide. We brought our kids here without any issues. There are areas with shade to rest in. No facilities. It's busy with many tour guides and groups following. Wear beach shoes. Clear shallow water with small bright blue fish, sea cucumbers and many little crabs.
Family C — Google review
just ok :) very shallow water when i went , and cave not so blue. be careful of currents and sea urchins etc. but still a great place to snorkel and swim. the walk down to the beach thru the jungle is amazing 🔆
Steffan P — Google review
A little hard to find but follow directions from another reviewer and take the dirt road to the left (on the map) of where it looks like you should go. Need to walk ~10min along the beach and sometimes in the water which was only shin deep at most. There was a smaller blue cave and then the bigger one a little further on. Interesting to see and really deep. I did not go in the water because we saw a lion fish in the water but there were other people swimming. A short walk in the water away is another deep cavern that you can swim and see larger fish. Sadly, a lot of the coral in the area is very brown and bleached but there is some wildlife to see.
Megan C — Google review
Entrance fee starting from 3500 Yen if you do it legally. You cant reach the blue cave because everything is private property. I am really disappointed :( so we left Without seeing it.

Arakawa Falls is a charming little waterfall located just off the main road, with a small parking lot that can accommodate a few cars. To reach the falls, visitors can take a short walk back towards the Kabira direction after crossing a bridge until they find a staircase leading down on the left. The surrounding area offers opportunities for stream-trekking and hiking, with rugged streams and lush tree ferns creating an immersive jungle experience.
A beautiful waterfall in the rainforest. The entrance is just near where the fence panelling stops, you will see little stone steps down to the waterfall, approximately 30m and you’re greeted by it.
Emy M — Google review
The water is quite refreshing and cool. There is a rope you can swing off. The whole water area is shaded so it is wonderful to escape the heat. It is close to a Yohenara beach. So when you finish going to the Yohenara beach you can easily go to Arakawa falls to rinse off. But it is a little small. The carpark only fits 3 cars.
Family C — Google review
These falls are not only beautiful but a great place for a little swim. You can access by car (small parking lot pictured) or by a short walk from the bus stop or beach. There is no sign for the entrance: it's an opening in the railing with stone steps going down. You should have good footwear, not flipflops or sandals. The descent into the water is pretty much vertical mossy stones. It would be difficult for children, or after it has rained recently. But if you have the right conditions and footwear, go for it! The water is cool, clear, and refreshing. The water was waist-high for me, not deep at all. There is a fun Tarzan rope you can use to swing into the water. Do be careful not to bother the wildlife. There were many fish, and I even saw a snake eel in the water with me. There are many mosquitoes.

This hidden jungle stream on Ishigaki Island is a wonderfully peaceful escape. Surrounded by dense greenery and smooth ochre rocks, the water trickles gently down small cascades, making it feel like a secret oasis in the subtropics. The sound of flowing water, rustling leaves, and occasional birds is deeply calming, perfect for anyone who wants to unwind in nature. It’s not as crowded as Ishigaki’s famous beaches, so it offers rare tranquility and a sense of adventure for explorers and nature lovers. Highly recommended for hikers and those seeking a refreshing break after a hot day. The stream’s cool water and natural shade from overhanging ferns create a little paradise that’s easy to enjoy at your own pace. There are some people playing in the pond ! Overall, this spot showcases one of Ishigaki’s more intimate, lesser-known charms—ideal for anyone who values serenity, short walks, and pristine scenery during their travels.

This is a superb little waterfall just off the road. There’s a parking lot off to the side, and you’ll want to walk back across the bridge to find the path down, or try the hard way next to the parking lot :). ALOALO Beach is a hidden gem on Ishigaki Island, offering a unique experience with its four cozy cottages that sit right by the shore. This idyllic spot features ALOALO CAFE, where you can enjoy delicious meals like taco rice while soaking in breathtaking views of the transparent emerald waters—especially stunning at high tide. The beach is family-friendly, with safe sandy areas for children to play and untouched coral reefs perfect for snorkeling adventures.
(Translated by Google) It was low tide (spring tide). But it was beautiful. I had curry and taco rice for lunch. It was delicious. (Original) ド干潮(大潮)でした。 でも、綺麗でした。 ランチでカレーとタコライスをいただきました。美味しかったよ。

(Translated by Google) The best time to visit this beach is at high tide. The sea is shallow, so when the tide comes in, the entire area is dyed a transparent emerald green, creating a spectacular view that looks like a postcard from a tropical country. However, if you come during low tide, the sea water will recede and you may be a little disappointed as you will see rocks and seaweed. Therefore, it is recommended that you choose a time to visit. However, at low tide during spring tide, you can walk several hundred meters to the open ocean, which is impressive! ``ALOALO BEACH Kabira'' next to this beach is my regular lodging when I come to Ishigaki Island. I've spent over 50 nights here, and strangely enough I never get tired of this beach. A beautiful beach stretches out in front of the inn, and it feels like your own private beach♪♪ You can enjoy a luxurious time with only the sound of the waves and the wind. Being able to grab a take-out coffee and relax while looking out at the ocean from ALOALO Cafe is the ultimate luxury. There's a hole on the beach, and there's a pure white crab in there, so it's cute. The sun does not set into the sea, but it does set towards the mountains, depending on the season. The entire sky was dyed in soft orange and pink, which was also impressive. There's nothing quite like watching the sunset quietly on an empty beach. The waves are very calm, so even families with small children can play safely. You can also rent snorkels, so it's a great place to relax and dip your feet in the water or play on the shore. And at night, the word "pitch black" is perfect. There are no street lights around, so it's really dark at night when the moon isn't out. But when I look up at the sky, I'm surprised at how many stars I can see. The Milky Way is also clear. It feels like you're surrounded by a planetarium. ALOALO BEACH Stay at Kabira and enjoy this beach 24 hours a day. The clear light of the morning, the sparkling sea at noon, the gradation of the sunset, the magical light of fireflies in the summer, and the starry night sky. This is a special beach where you can only experience everything here 😍 (Original)

(Translated by Google) It was the best tour. I took a night tour at the hotel's recommendation, and I was so excited to see a variety of wild birds that I hurriedly booked a daytime tour as well. The guide is very knowledgeable about wild birds, so you can spend a fulfilling time. If I go to Ishigaki Island again, I would like to join the tour. (Translated by Google) On June 24, 2025, we were shown around Ishigaki Island's bird watching spots. Mr. Kawano, our guide, was a friendly person, and we had a great time from 9am to 4pm. He showed us around the tidal flats, rice fields, and forests, and we saw little terns, black herons (white), shorebirds, white-breasted waterhens, striped kingfishers, white-headed eagles, purple herons, Japanese bush warblers, Japanese titmice, Ryukyu white-eyes, barn owls, Ryukyu scops owls, ruddy kingfishers, and crested eagles, among others. This trip to Ishigaki Island was mainly about ruddy kingfishers, so I thought it would be difficult to see the crested eagles, but we managed to get through it beautifully. There was a squall in the morning, and Mr. Kawada explained to us that ruddy kingfishers often come out after the rain, but we didn't see any. We were a little worried, but in the afternoon, they came out like a feeding frenzy. I was also surprised to see a Crested Serpent Eagle, which is difficult to photograph this time of year, and my fingers trembled as I pressed the shutter. For lunch, I was taken to the famous local restaurant, Arakawa Shokudo, where I enjoyed delicious beef soba noodles. It was a private tour for just my wife and I, and we enjoyed a very reasonable and reasonable price. I'm grateful that you continued to search for birds until the end, around 4pm. It was a very memorable Ishigaki Island bird watching trip. Thank you very much.
