Sushi restaurant
Hakone Sushi is a small, traditional sushi bar located in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa. It's renowned for its conger eel and has received recognition from the All Japan Great Tasting Food Association. The restaurant owner personally travels to Numazu every morning to select the freshest seafood for their sushi. Despite being situated in the mountains, the seafood is incredibly fresh. Customers praise the sashimi for its exceptional freshness and generous portions.
We had a wonderful experience at Hakone sushi, as a group of 8 foreigners. The staff was very kind and friendly, they took the time to explain us how to eat properly sushi and spoke some English! The sushis were delightful and not too expensive for the traditional experience on the tatamis, eating on the floor without shoes! We highly recommend it if you are searching for a great sushi experience in Japan!

Amazing sushi restaurant ! The service is great, the chef and waitresses are very friendly and gentle. The sushi, especially tunas are insanely good. Best miso soup I had in all Japan. Can’t wait to come back
Lucie G — Google review
We went near lunch closing time thus the previous groups were all leaving, and we get the full attention of the sushi chef. The sushi are very good for a mountainous town but that's pretty normal in many other coastal towns and cities. Chef said he buys them fresh every morning. Price wise is a little higher but it's worth it.
Chriz L — Google review
This is the best sushi we had in Japan. The otoro was especially delicious. Service was great.
Mikael K — Google review
lovely sushi and sashimi place with friendly staff. recommend booking. seats at the bench or japanese seating on the floor for groups of up to 4. check out the specials (in japanese) but there are plenty of options from the menu (understandable in English). standouts were the eel (delicate) and the miso soup. expert sushi chefs and a nice place for dinner.
Stephen G — Google review
Came here for dinner with my fam and finished around 8PM and we cannot find a taxi or uber to go back to hotel and the restaurant even drove us back. Literally if not we didn’t know how to walk back since it is 2 hour walking. Besides that, the food is so so good 😍😍😍😍 my dad is super sensitive with fishy smell when eating sashimi but he love the food here so much!!!!!!
Linh V — Google review
Local sushi spot that is very authentic. Several different omakase menu options to choose from. They have traditional floor seating and a few sushi bar seats. Highly recommend a reservation. Fish was fresh & the miso was incredible!
Shannon S — Google review
I was there for holiday and I was craving for sushi ( lunch time ) I found it from google and it was my first visit . The minute I opened the door i knew I had found a right place , sashimi was sooooo fresh , I read some reviews before choosing this place but it was so fresh , it was like eating in a stared / well known fine dinning in Tokyo ! It was so great I had to order more ! Staff was friendly and they were ok to communicate in English ( English menu and credit card accepted too ) I would come back next time ! Thanks chef for the wonderful lunch !

Sushi Miyafuji is a hidden gem in Hakone, offering an authentic and intimate dining experience. The skilled chef sources fresh fish from Sagami Bay to create delectable sushi and sashimi. The restaurant's cozy ambiance, with only a few tables and seats at the sushi bar, adds to its charm. Guests can enjoy omakase dining, where the chef curates a personalized menu.
My bowl and sushi were delicious. The fish was fresh and flavorful, and the fish comes from local waters. Service was quick. The staff is friendly. If you go in and don't speak any Japanese, be sure to thank the chef and his staff in Japanese (even if it's poor). They've been open for 60 years, and to see a couple working in the 80s and producing A+ food is beautiful. Their food and restaurant made me happy.

Soo good. So fresh and made with love by very experienced uncle and auntie. Beautiful origami. Love the teacups. Definitely worth the 30 minute wait (came at 12). Lovely experience of Japanese cuisine. We went on a Saturday and there was no queue from 13pm. When there is a queue you do have to write your name down on a desk.
Fish B — Google review
The mackerel bowl was SO delicious, the soup, the sushi was amazing, all the food was so fresh!!! I had dinner twice in this place during my stay in Hakone. The owner is such a nice and friendly person and his family. It's definitely a great experience of Japanese cuisine. Highly recommended!!
Alina S — Google review
The best sushi I had in Japan for now. The service does not speak English but they are very kind and try their best to serve you. It is not cheap, but is really really worth it for the quality they serve. The best fish I ever had. And served with love from two persons that made sushi from 60 years.
Matías L — Google review
Local waters horse mackerel don in a beautifully tucked away family run sushi shop with emotive music and a myriad of trinkets to embellish a perfect experience further. I was manically happy with a strange tinge of nostalgia and deja vu throughout the meal. The rice in the don is a lovely temperature and texture with plenty of roe and onions mixed through to make it never tire my palate. And the fish has a slight robustness to the taste, slight fishiness and an pleasantly gelatinous but forgiving texture.
Frederik L — Google review
Great local Sushi experience with humble freindly Chef and his family. The restaurant is specialized in Aji (horse mackerel) and Toro Tuna. Served fresh and sweet, irresistibly delicious. It was one of the best Toro Taku (Fine chopped fatty Tuna with Yellow sweet pickle) I have ever tried. Definately worth travel and highly recommend. You could either pay the bill by cash or credit card.
Pete T — Google review
One of the best surprised finds on my trip to Hakone. Almost like a hole in the wall restaurant that you won't even bat an eye. We went on a Monday night and thankfully we had the hotel staff call in advance to make a reservation because we realized the restaurant was only open at 5:30 and last order was 7:30 that night. There's about 4 tables in the entire restaurant and 6 seats at the sushi bar. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered okamase sushi, sashimi and sake. The owner and his wife was super friendly and tried their best to talk to us with his limited English that he had. We also discovered the chef was a master at paper cranes and displayed his work all over his shop. Thr paper cranes are folded with 15mm square paper and he uses the folded cranes to make art pieces out of them. He also challenges his customers in folding a paper crane out of the same size paper in 10mins and will display their work on a board bearing the challengers name and city. We tried, but failed

Very friendly owner who at age 81 worked nonstop, clearing dishes, prepping food. The horse mackeral rice bowl is very fresh, soup is simple which brings out the other dishes flavor.

Hakone Kappei is a small sushi restaurant conveniently situated between the Chukoku-no-mori station and the Open Air Museum. Despite its unassuming appearance, it caters to vegan customers and offers an English menu for foreign visitors. The friendly couple managing the place ensures that guests feel welcome, and the food quality exceeds expectations while remaining reasonably priced. Visitors highly recommend trying out their superb dishes, particularly praising the delicious fatty tuna.
This sushi is top quality, it is so fresh! One of the best sushi I have tried. The place itself is not fancy, and the service is not top tier. If you arent worried about this or the time you are going to wait, this place is perfect.
Marcos B — Google review
We were at the Hakone Open Air Museum and came here for lunch since it was nearby. We ordered the Jo Chirashi, Fatty Tuna Don, and the Grilled Salmon Belly. Everything was really good but the Salmon Belly was my favorite.
L Y — Google review
I think 2 stars for convenience and some vegan options although it was super basic. Vegan options were truly no better than konbini food. He was out of the tofu so we got the vegan sushi (cucumber roll and pickled root vegetable rolls), inari, and edamame. I'm from Manhattan so there are plenty of inventive innovative vegan sushi. Nothing of substance here so you'll be hungry again very quickly. Nothing personal against the master as this seems to be standard across Japan. But today we'll be better off cooking for ourselves.
M R — Google review
The cute restaurant has enough seating for a dozen people, so it felt intimate. Food was delicious. We felt warm cozy, and full - nice lunch in adorable setting.

Good price for sushi. Fish was fresh and presentation very nice. Authentic atmosphere :) Enjoyed a summo match on the tv while there. :)

Food is amazing, and with a good price! It has welcoming atmosphere, so definitely recommended. The place is run by a couple, so when it’s busy, you have to wait a long time.. they don’t have fixed opening hours. Only cash payments. Anyways worth it.

Amazing small restaurant. Very generous portions, the fatty tuna was on of the best I’ve ever eaten. Highly recommend, just near the Hakone open air museum (which I recommend too).
Benjamin Y — Google review
Delicious sushi, right next door to the open air museum. Opens at 5pm and was run by a friendly Japanese couple. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious and the service was friendly and fast. We watched him plate up our sushi and nigiri in front of us. Would go back for sure!

Sushi restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Hakone, Yamahiko Zushi is a culinary gem that showcases the artistry of sushi-making with over 40 years of expertise. The restaurant prides itself on serving fresh fish sourced directly from Sagami Bay, ensuring each dish bursts with flavor. Among its standout offerings are the 'Yamahiko Nigiri,' crafted from morning-caught fish, and the vibrant 'Kaisendon,' a seafood donburi brimming with an array of colorful seafood delights.
I am vegetarian and have not eaten fish in a decade, but I told myself that if I found the right place while visiting Japan, I would try some sushi. I am so grateful that I stumbled on Yamahiko Zushi yesterday evening while strolling through Miyagino in search of a meal. I got the last seat at the counter and ate what can only be described as “ambrosia” — food of the gods. Prepared with love and deep respect for their craft by the expert chefs, the sushi melted in my mouth. I loved the stillness and intimacy of the space. An unforgettable experience!
Daniela J — Google review
Wow, the most delicious and authentic sushi experience I've ever had. Sushi is prepared with love and expertise by a very friendly team of chefs; true craftsmanship. A fantastic Japanese cultural and culinary experience. Thank you so much

My son said they deserve 5 hearts! Oishi! Even the kid’s tuna roll has nice marble on it. The fatty tuna is nice pink. The sides that comes with the shellfish sashimi have shiso flowers.
Ya Y — Google review
Outstanding hospitality and food. I can only dream of revisiting this wonderful sushi restaurant. Chefs had prepared us Aburi sushi which was extremely tasty. Cannot recommend this place enough!
Kynan D — Google review
This had to be my favourite spot in all of Japan. From the traditional layout to the people it was all so beautiful. Every bite I had made me want more but sadly it ran out! Hakone and this restaurant will always be a great memory for me. Fun story I’ve got a few tattoos especially on my arms and were taught that sometimes small towns and old generations are scared of tattoos due to the yakuza. While we were eating our meals I saw the chef constantly glance at mine. I thought potentially I have offended them. After our meal the chef ran out to show me his freshly done tattoos in which we had a great conversation over before taking a pic! Never think you know what’s going on with out asking. We chatted with the chefs using google translate as they tried to speak their best English and we tried to speak our best Japanese it wasn’t going so well.
Spencer F — Google review
Excellent local sushi and sashimi restaurant that's also great value for money. Aside from the fresh local and seasonal fish, the miso soup that's served at the end of the meal was a highlight and packed with seafood, so save some space for it. As per another recent review foreigners are welcome here. The staff don't speak English however, so if you can't speak at least basic Japanese you'll struggle to enjoy the easy atmosphere and banter the staff have with their regular customers. Note also that Yamahiko Zushi is small with just six counter seats and two tables that can accommodate four each. At the counter seats there's a space where you can sit and dangle your legs, but the tables are on tatami so you'll need to sit cross legged on the floor. The place is packed every night so I wouldn't go without a booking, but if you do please note that empty seats are no indication that the seats are actually available, since they respect bookings.
World F — Google review
Fresh, authentic, and full of care Yamahiko Zushi serves some of the freshest sushi around — simple, beautifully made, and full of flavour. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, and you can really taste the chef’s passion for quality. A hidden gem in Hakone and absolutely worth visiting.

A popular sashimi restaurant along the shopping street. The sashimi sets were fresh and well-prepared! Service staff were friendly and relatively quick to serve us. Do note that during lunch hours, there will be a wait to be seated. Great place if you are craving for sashimi and sushi! Visited in November 2024.

You have to go here! The sushi was amazing! Kind and helpful staff. They even brought us edamame beans and miso soup to start, as a little bonus. Topped it off with some delicious whiskey and soda! Wonderful meal, and affordable!

Authentic sushi chef, fresh and good sashimi, very nice makuro don. Reasonable price, choice of fish is a bit limited.

Setting is small and traditional, sushi done by elder sushi maker. Sushi nicely presented but taste is just average. Menu on the outside looks authentic (Japanese only) though the menu once seated is in English and pictures too. All clients were Japanese tourists.

Cute family-owned restaurant in a quiet neighbourhood run by an elderly couple with space for maximum ~4 groups of diners at any one time. The couple does not speak a word of English, but the menu is in English and very easy to navigate. The fatty tuna sushi was to die for!! Overall a memorable dining experience in a cosy little restaurant with an old Japanese couple who is very welcoming to foreigners and dedicated to their craft. I highly recommend it!

Great meals can come from unexpected places! Tokyo Sushi may seem like just another non-descript little house in just another one of many unassuming residential areas in Hakone, but it is in fact a hidden gem of an omakase place. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, its interiors adorned with quaint and vintage paraphernalia; reminders of bygone days. The owner and chef is a friendly old man who prepares and serves every piece of sushi in front of you with a casual seriousness. His wife assists in the background; unobtrusively attentive. The sushi itself is fantastic. Fresh, exquisitely prepared and, given the quality, very good value 😌 This is one of those meals you hope to have more of in Japan. Peaceful. Delicious. Memorable. *they were so nice, even gave me a cute postcard and keychain before I left 😁

LOVED THIS SUSHI PLACE ! I went with a friend tonight, Friday night at 8pm, we found a table and the atmosphere is very authentic. Salmon nigiri is amazing, same as for fatty tuna nigiri. The rest is very good too! Truly recommend it <3 <3

incredible sushi and sashimi, our favourites were the fatty tuna & medium fatty tuna. the sushi chef was very stoic and serious about his craft, so glad we got to experience it. the lady owner was extremely cute, she gave us handmade mt fuji keychains as we were paying the bill. I felt like I was having dinner at my grandparents’ house! It was so homely and filled with little trinkets. The hosts were an elderly couple and they were the absolute sweetest. The food was the best sushi I’ve ever had. The Uni sushi was out of this world - we loved it so much we had to order it twice! When we left they also gave us little trinkets as gifts. It really feels like they do it out of love, and also that they appreciate the company of having travelers on their doorstep :) SO worth the money, it was really affordable for what we had!! Can’t recommend this place enough!!
Ting L — Google review
I personally have never really had much sushi in my life, I’ve mainly been a Ramen/soba lover. However tonight I might have some of the best taste experiences in my life. So much depth of flavour and warm, wonderful kind hosts. you really get a sense of omotenashi (Japanese hospitality) here. I also think for the price it is incredible value for such brilliant quality. In the UK where I’m from this would easily be double the price. Also, this was my first uni (sea urchin) experience. I was sceptical but that first bite blew me away!! There were so many different flavours in that one bite I couldn’t work out what was coming next! 🤤🤤🤤1000000000 / 10 🌟🌟🌟

The shop where we were supposed to have dinner was already closed and accidentally discovered this very nice sushi shop in Hakone. We ordered their 10pcs Gen-Sen Nigiri sushi, Futo-Maki and sake on glass. The sushi are absolutely delicious. There were patrons already at the bar which were really friendly to us and even with our limited japanese they were trying to converse with us. A lady who speaks English very well joined our table and had a chat with us. She's very kind and even offered help as she learned we will be travelling to Odawara where she's from. The chef and staff are very friendly and would definitely come back.

We just walked in and were lucky to get a table - the place is quite small. We chose Chefs set and local fish set. Everything was simply amazing. Chef’s set is for general sushi lovers while local fish set is for those who want to explore. Miso soup was made with clams and was also much better than usual one. Service was very good as well.

(Translated by Google) Good price, fresh, sweet, full flavor. Want to eat more but still full. Most importantly, accept credit/debit card ❤️ We stayed at Blisstia and had the hotel call to make a reservation for us. It was only a 6-minute walk. At first, I was confused, thinking the shop was closed. There was a small sign on the floor that said "Open" in Japanese. 🍣 We went at 5:30 PM on Sunday. There were no people in the shop. At first, the atmosphere was a bit quiet because we can't speak Japanese. The lady who took our order was very cute. By 6 PM, the shop was full, so the atmosphere was good. There were only Japanese people. It is recommended to make a reservation on holidays because when we left, the tables were full. There were 2 of us and we got 1 cup of clam soup each. We ordered 1 glass of iced green tea each, which were refillable. The shop didn't charge us. The pickles were delicious. The menu is as shown in the picture. We ordered the same gen-sen nigiri and gen-sen don, just the appearance was different. 1 plate of grilled Japanese mackerel and 1 extra cup of clam soup. The bill is as shown in the picture. 👍 Personally, I think it is very good value for money. Authentic Japanese restaurant
Dining Room Sushi is a rare find in Hakone, offering a delightful experience with its wide variety of Japanese sake and delicious menu items. The sushi chef and staff are friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Guests can enjoy a la carte sushi, as well as other tasty dishes like the cold corn soup. While it may be slightly more expensive than expected, the overall experience is enjoyable and worth visiting again to savor different seasonal dishes.
Very good dinning experience, delicious food, proactive service
Ray C — Google review
A much more refined and elevated experience compared to the Western Cuisine Dining Room where the food was quite average for the price point. You do pay elevated hotel dining prices here but it’s counter seating with options for the whole family besides the set menu. The set menu includes a generous portion of food and the nigiri quality is solid. Credit card or room charge is accepted. Reservations recommended. Seating is indoor only.
Randy F — Google review
The entrees were a highlight, beautifully balanced and intriguing. The chefs' knife skills were exceptional, yielding consistently thin cucumber slices for one of the entrees. While the sashimi was fresh, it wasn't the most remarkable I've had. Expect high prices, typical of a luxury hotel. We were lucky enough to sit in the private sushi room and the atmosphere was great. The monaka ice cream sandwich, however, was unforgettable, boasting an incredibly crisp wafer.

It was a nice experience though a bit more expensive than what I thought. The sushi chef and staff were friendly. The raw octopus was the best

(Translated by Google) It was delicious and I enjoyed it. You can also enjoy a wide variety of Japanese sake. We recommend comparing the drinks of Kuroryu's limited series! ! It's not pictured, but the cold corn soup was really delicious! ! I would like to visit in different seasons and enjoy different dishes.

Food and atmosphere are good but service is something to improve. Waiter's briefing is not enough and waiter looks confused sometimes.
Poi L — Google review
(Translated by Google) The atmosphere was nice, but the service, ingredients, and food were so terrible I was shocked. There was no coordination between the staff, and I could clearly hear the chefs discussing whether to reuse the kabosu citrus fruit left by customers. It was completely worthless. I can safely say that this is a restaurant aimed at inbound tourists. I would not recommend it to discerning Japanese people. The sushi ingredients themselves were quite ordinary, so unfortunately I will not be returning.

(Translated by Google) I had a very good stay at the Hyatt Regency Hakone a few years ago, so I went back this time, but it seems my expectations were a little too high. I think they are doing a great job with the low price range, but unfortunately I was not as impressed as I was last time. Also, the menu listed a 10,000 yen course and a 15,000 yen course side by side, and the 10,000 yen course was introduced to me as "this is a slightly smaller course," so I mistakenly thought it was a course similar to the 15,000 yen course but with fewer dishes and portions. I ordered that course for my elderly parents who eat less, but almost all of the menu items were of a lower grade, and it was a very disappointing result for a trip to feed my parents delicious food. We exchanged dishes from my course and ate them together, but the main fish dish was also very disappointing and disappointing. (The main fish and meat of my course were very delicious.) It is my fault for not checking properly, but I would like them to refrain from using misleading language and I think it would be good if they could provide a small meal course that does not lower the grade. There are many delicious restaurants nearby, so I'm not sure if I'll return.

Hurry up and dine in this gem before it becomes popular and will require long wait. Traditional Japanese sushi with a maximum of 8 guests per day (dinner), so plan accordingly. This is not an inexpensive restaurant but considering the attention you will receive and the quality of food it’s on par with other premium restaurants. Service Chiefs are very friendly and attentive to every need. Chef will prepare 1 serving at a time with the next one following in about 5 minutes. Our dinner had over twenty servings of fish, soup, omelet, and deserts. Bring your appetite! Highly recommended!

If you are looking for a Ryokan with a private onsen. This is the place to book! The sushi was the best I had in my life. The breakfast and beef dinner was superb as well. The staff service was exceptional and accommodating. I will always remember my experience here. ありがと ございます

11/10 experience after a solid uphill climb. One of the best sushi we’ve had in our lives. Chef’s choice menu, with great variety. Chef Ueno was attentive and helpful, spoke english, explained what dishes were and provided awesome suggestions on sake pairings. Definitely a must in Hakone!

Worth the climb up the hill for a fantastic lunch overlooking beautiful mountain scenery. Master Chef Ishida and Chief Ueno were lovely and very hospitable even accommodating our three year old. Food was delicious and beautifully presented.

I have no words to describe this awful sensation of this restaurant. I have put 5 stars in everything of this restaurant, but if I could, I would put infinity of stars here. The best restaurant in the world✨🌍. The best food, the best service... 10000000000000000% recommended. If you travel to Japan and you don't go to that restaurant, your travel will have no sence. 本当にありがとうございました❤️ ♡´・ᴗ・`♡

Nestled amidst a variety of thermal springs, Sushi Sho emerges as an opulent haven for sushi connoisseurs. This esteemed eatery is under the direct management of the renowned Kinnotake Group, celebrated for its luxurious inns in Hakone. Founded in 2019 within the Zagakukan boutique hotel, Sushi Sho has rapidly gained acclaim as a new culinary treasure in Hakone.
Incredible experience. If you are traveling to Hakone to go see Mount Fuji, make a special stop just to eat here. We had the lunch special Omakase experience, and I bet the dinner one must be unbeatable too. The quality of the fish is exquisite, the amount of care the Chef puts into crafting each piece, and the attentiveness of the staff really made our experience unforgettable. The only downside is that the food was so superb, every other omakase experience we’ve been having on our Japan trip has not matched (haha), because this restaurant set the bar so high for us. My favorite pieces were the smoked fatty tuna, and the sea urchin thinly wrapped in seaweed. We did appreciate the authenticity while they were also able to cater to us as we speak no Japanese (oops). The menus were in English and we were able to choose what we wished (out of the 2 available lunch omakase experiences) and pick drinks easily (we had the Sapporo and a Whiskey-soda that complemented the food so well and was refreshing on this warmer day). Overall, would highly recommend and we’re already considering coming back to this town just for this experience!

すばらしいです! We actually stumbled upon this amazing dining experience by accident on a rainy evening in Hakone, and I must say this ranks on my top restaurant experiences ever - What luck! The atmosphere in this little restaurant is amazing and their service is what you would expect from Michelin level restaurants. We were a group of 6 people that all ordered the Omakase experience, and I must say this is one of the best sushi meals I have ever had. The overall experience is something I surely never will forget, and I would definitely go here again if I get the chance. If you are in Hakone looking for a place to eat, you need to experience this place! Extra kudos to our waiter who gave us brilliant service!

A truly authentic and amazing experience. The chefs took the time to explain each part of the Omasake. They made us feel comfortable and provided an excellent service. The quality of fish is unmatched and amazing value for money. I’d recommend to anyone!

Absolutely incredible experience at Sushi SHO. The atmosphere is elegant and minimalistic, with every detail thoughtfully designed. The sushi was outstanding – top quality, beautifully prepared, and full of flavor. The staff were extremely friendly and made the evening feel truly special. A real hidden gem – highly recommended!

Amazing service, food, and presentation! Amazing first authentic sushi experience in our first trip to Japan! Our server Hiromichi Miki was so kind and able to tell us each different piece that was crafted! Masterful execution! Very intimate and snazzy space too! we were able to sit at the bar and ask questions and see everything. Such a cool time!

The omakase menu we had was great, specially the nigiris. The service was excellent and very friendly and they were able to communicate in English. The chef prepared all the food in front of us and explained us each plate. Definitely a great experience and worth the visit
