Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha is an impressive archaeological site featuring the Gothic ruins of a 1300s monastery, along with a visitor center. The monastery, located near the Mondego River, was abandoned and neglected for over 300 years, resulting in remarkably well-preserved yet partially submerged ruins. Visitors can explore the hulking remains, including crumbling cloisters and a dilapidated bell tower that now hosts music concerts and events.
I really enjoyed my visit! Entry was €4. I love ruins, so it was really fun to walk inside the semi-restored monastery. Most of the exhibits were in Portuguese so I got most of the value out of just seeing the ruins. The entrance is on the far side of the monastery which is slightly inconvenient.
Jessica Z — Google review
As Patrícia and I continued our Rota de Inês e Pedro, we found ourselves at the Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha, a hauntingly beautiful ruin that sits by the banks of the Mondego River. This ancient Gothic monastery, intertwined with the same tragic romance we had been tracing through our journey, felt like a quiet echo of the past. Constructed in the early 14th century by Queen Isabel of Aragon, it was a place of refuge and contemplation for the nuns of the Order of St. Clare. But its proximity to the Mondego, while initially advantageous, led to centuries of flooding, making life unbearable for its inhabitants. These cyclical floods, which repeatedly submerged the cloisters and church, ultimately forced the community to abandon it in the 17th century . The floods, however, have left behind more than just ruins—they’ve woven a certain melancholic charm into the stones. Wandering through the vast cloister, the largest Gothic cloister in Portugal, we felt the weight of history. Archaeological excavations have revealed a wealth of artifacts, now housed in the Interpretative Centre, offering a glimpse into the lives of the nuns who once walked these same halls . What makes this place truly unique, though, is the Paço Real, where Queen Isabel lived, and the fact that it’s one of the rumored locations of Inês de Castro’s murder. Standing on these grounds, it’s easy to imagine the tense political atmosphere that surrounded Pedro and Inês’s love . Today, the site has been lovingly restored, and its intricate Gothic architecture shines through despite its turbulent history. The sense of time passing—slow, steady, and sometimes violent—is palpable here. The center’s permanent exhibition adds another layer, presenting everyday objects from the nuns’ lives, which makes you feel like you’re stepping into another world . For us, the visit was both contemplative and surreal. Walking through the cloisters and ruins, we couldn’t help but reflect on how this site, like the love story of Pedro and Inês, has endured despite the many forces trying to erase it. Tip: Don’t miss the Interpretative Centre—seeing the artifacts helps piece together the history, and the view of the river from the ruins is particularly striking at sunset .

The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha is a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into Coimbra’s past. Partly submerged for centuries by the Mondego River, its restored Gothic ruins tell stories of resilience and devotion. Walking among the arches feels like stepping into another time.
Esrf G — Google review
This was interesting and cool to see and walk around. We had a bit of a hard time finding the entrance- it's quite far from the actual site- in the very stark building you can see across the grass and walkways. There's a little history video to watch inside there first.
Lee P — Google review
Wonderful experience. The monastery is very well kept, you can see that maintenance work is being done. The staff is friendly and professional, they make you feel at home. I recommend the visit if you happen to be in Coimbra.
Andrea — Google review
Very interesting and well worth visiting. If you are walking to it don’t give up when you reach the ruins and everywhere seems to be closed. There is a long walk from the ruins to the visitor centre and not many signs, but keep going and you will get there. You are aiming for the long low building and the entrance is on the opposite side to the ruins.
Finola C — Google review
This place is good start before Santa Clara Nova…recommendations to watch a 15 min movie about history of the place. Worth every penny! Go for it!
Anja P — Google review
Museum allows access to a walkway where you can view the ruins of the monastery but it doesn't allow you to come inside of it. Entrance is a bit tricky to find too - you have to go around the whole area before getting to it. There's an exhibit you can also view and a documentary that we didn't get to watch since the wait time is too long. I recommend skipping it if you don't have a lot of time visiting Coimbra.

Portugal dos Pequenitos in Coimbra is a charming miniature park that offers a unique way to explore Portugal’s history and architecture. The park features detailed small-scale replicas of famous Portuguese monuments, traditional houses, and even buildings from former colonies. It’s especially fun for children, who can wander through the tiny structures, but adults will also appreciate the educational and nostalgic aspects. Some areas could use a bit more maintenance, but overall, it’s an enjoyable and memorable visit for families and anyone interested in seeing Portugal’s landmarks in a playful, accessible way.

I have visited Portugal dos Pequeninos the first time at 4 years old, and many times after that. It's an amazing place and experience to adults and children's. The most iconic buildings so well represented. Gorgeous space. Beautiful trees and green spaces. And now they have a passport for the children to stamp at different stands.... they loved them.
Patricia C — Google review
Cool experience for young kids and everyone who does not take themselves to serious. It was a cool, even though pricy experience. The houses are well maintained, even though the technic for speakers and lighters is often broken.
Timo R — Google review
It's a nice place with a lot of shades to hide under the sun. The kids would enjoy more if they are more than 5 or 6. We like to buy a passport to collect the stamps.
Dani T — Google review
My granddaughter had a fantastic time visiting this park. Plenty of interactive activities and then just all the miniature houses and castles. I think it will be the highlight of her trip to Portugal 🇵🇹

If you have kids and want something fun to do in Coimbra, this is the place to go! You and your children will enjoy the experience.

A very good place for an excursion, and with children too. The concept for this place will show how diverse Portugal is and how the cultures of the different colonies influenced the architecture of Portugal as we know it today. There is a playground for children at the very end of the exhibition. Take sandwiches with you to have a snack, my family was on a holiday and all the cafes inside were closed.

The National Museum Machado de Castro in Coimbra, Portugal is a fascinating attraction built on Roman tunnels and showcasing an impressive collection of Gothic sculptures, religious art, and an 11th-century cloister. After exploring the museum, visitors can take a leisurely stroll down Rua Larga to see the arches of the aqueduct and the Botanical Garden.
The National Museum Machado de Castro is a treasure of Coimbra. Exploring its vast collection of art and sculptures is inspiring, but the real surprise is the ancient Roman cryptoporticus beneath; walking there feels like stepping into history. A perfect mix of culture and archaeology.
Esrf G — Google review
I did not expect this museum so big and interesting but it was. The guards in the galleries guide you through a sort of fixed route through the museum that starts below in the catacombs with the remains of a Roman forum. Following the route there are mostly religious sculptures and paintings set in chronological order so you can see how much this art has improved over time. To the end there are galleries with precious metal objects, ceramics, furniture and a small oriental section. All in all you need ample time to see it all and 1,5 seems the minimum.
Seimen B — Google review
The National Museum Machado de Castro has two main attractions. The first is the fascinating ruins of a Roman city located beneath the building, and the second is a beautiful collection of sacred art. The museum building itself is also architecturally impressive. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Coimbra.
Murillo P — Google review
Wonderful quick tour of the Cryptoporticus at the National Museum Machado de Castro. Awed at the level of care given this ancient underground piece of history. At 3€ per adult, if you like history, well worth the price!
Auli S — Google review
We arrived and we were pleasantly surprised. It was very calm and we immediately had someone help us with getting tickets. You have someone that shows you where to go everywhere so we got to see everything. It took us about an hour and 45 minutes to see everything. The people that work here are very friendly and passionate about the museum. The exhibition felt very complete! And we learned a lot about the art history in coimbra. It was definitely worth it coming here!
Nikolai C — Google review
It kept going and going from underground to overlooking the city. Many many impressive exhibits including Roman tunnels for grain storage and the queen’s jewelry. Very worthwhile visit.
Todd M — Google review
I’d seen a programme about this place and was curious to explore the underground Roman ruins myself. What I didn’t realise was just how vast the museum is—spread across three floors, filled with stunning altars, sculptures, and exquisite golden sacraments. Definitely a must-visit!

The Old Cathedral of Saint Mary of Coimbra is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture, built in the 12th century during a time when Portugal was under threat from the Moors. Its fortress-like appearance with high, crenellated walls reflects this historical context. The cathedral's main portal and facade are particularly striking, especially in the warm evening light. Inside, visitors can admire an ornate late-Gothic retable and a beautiful 13th-century cloister.
Golly gosh ! What a truly amazing building . I was able to get into the entrance part only that day as the church was closed to visitors at the time I arrived , the exterior architecture is amazing as is the part I seen inside . It still functions as a church but also a tourist attraction. This is a worth visit when you’re in this beautiful city .
Aidan M — Google review
The Old Cathedral of Saint Mary of Coimbra is an incredible historical site. Its cloister is one of my absolute favorites in all of Portugal — peaceful, beautifully designed, and full of charm. Walking through its arches feels like stepping back in time. A must-see for anyone who loves architecture, or history.
Murillo P — Google review
Yes this is a special cathedral to visit and is a real must do whilst in the city of Coimbra . The architecture is simply stunning and it’s has been well preserved/maintained over the years , there is a cover charge to enter and I do recommend you pay it and enjoy the splendour of this amazing building . It was closing the day I was here and I was only able to get limited photos . But yes as I previously stated it’s a very worthwhile visit .
Aidan M — Google review
Lovely cathedral to visit if in Coimbra, almost 900 old :) and still active. Entrance is only 2.50 € and probably there is a great audio guide but was in a hurry to check it out. Still well worth the visit if you like the ancient religion theme!
Adam M — Google review
Construction of the cathedral began in 1139, following Afonso Henriques’s declaration as the first king of Portugal and his designation of Coimbra as the capital. In 1185, the cathedral hosted the coronation of his son, King Sancho I. It is the only Romanesque cathedral in Portugal from the time of the Reconquista that has survived largely in its original form. While predominantly Romanesque, the cathedral also features Gothic and Renaissance elements throughout. Until the episcopal seat was moved to the Sé Nova (New Cathedral) in 1772, the cathedral served as the main cathedral of the Diocese of Coimbra.
Seokjin H — Google review
The Old Cathedral of Coimbra, a magnificent Romanesque edifice dating back to 1117, stands as one of the city’s most striking landmarks.
Sidney W — Google review
Sober, monumental, austere, imposing. You can't pass through Coimbra without entering this wonder of a cathedral.
L M — Google review
The best and worst of Coimbra. Older than the University, this mesmerising church is a world heritage gem. Worth the visit in daytime visits. Poetic and romantic in the evening, can be a less than ideally safe place after 2am. Then again, not too many god things after 2 am anywhere....

The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, a gothic monastery dating back to the 1300s, was abandoned due to flooding. The new convent was built in the 17th century to replace the old one. It features tours of the ruins and excavated artifacts. Located in Coimbra, visitors can explore other nearby attractions such as the Cryptoporticus of Aeminium, Capela do Tesoureiro, and the Machado de Castro National Museum.
The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova is a stunning contrast to its older counterpart. Bright, well-preserved, and filled with beautiful Baroque art, it offers a peaceful retreat. Exploring its elegant cloisters and intricate chapels, I felt a deep connection to Coimbra’s rich religious history.

Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova Type: Monastery Time spent: 20-25 min Parking: available Bike parking: not available Entrance: paid WC: available The Monastery of Santa Clara of Coimbra was founded in the early 14th century near the river Mondego by Queen Elizabeth of Portugal, wife of King Dinis I. Through the centuries, the church and monastic buildings were repeatedly flooded by the Mondego. In the 17th century, under the rule of King John IV, it was decided that a new monastery was to be built for the religious community. Construction works began in 1649, and the church was finished by 1696. All nuns as well as the Gothic tombs of Queen Elizabeth and other royal princesses were transferred to the new monastery, therefore called "Santa Clara-a-Nova".
Oleh S — Google review
Beautiful and very informative employees. Great stop along the pilgrimage. €6 entry.
Kelly R — Google review
First, people commenting here confuse this site with the ruins nearby of Monastery Santa Clara-la-Velha. Secondly, the owner should post the price here, on Google Maps, so people can be prepared: tickets are 6 euro for adults, 3 euro for teens. The monastery looks more impressive from afar; close up, the crumbling walls show its age. From the town center there are several buses passing by (bus stop: Rainha Santa from where there's just a couple of minutes walk downhill). Personally, I regret making the effort to visit Santa Clara-a-Nova because after seeing monasteries in Batalha, Tomar, Alcobaca, etc. they all start looking the same.
Globe T — Google review
Great part of Portugal history in a best place. If you're catholic as well.
Ej A — Google review
A beautiful place to visit, and a great personal guided tour of the monastery! Make sure you check out the cloister (it’s a super experience) a real sense of peace

We checked the website to check it was open. Walked up a steep hill to find that we could not go in because there was a wedding followed by a mass. Weddings like this one take months of preparation and so there could have been a mention on the website that it was closed from a certain time. Very unimpressed!!! If they want donations to the upkeep of the site they need to update their website to help people to visit.

Santa Cruz Church, also known as Santa Cruz Monastery, is a historic Catholic parish church in Portugal with significant royal and religious importance. The 12th-century Romanesque structure houses the mausoleum of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, and his successor Sancho. The monastery features intricate Manueline-style architecture on its facade and beautifully tiled cloisters.
Amazingly historic, like walking back in time when walking through the doors. Intricate details that just couldn't be replicated these days. So quiet and peaceful inside. Superb stone vaulted ceiling.
Jon Y — Google review
Pros: - Free entry during mass (as it should be), If you attend mass, you can stay afterwards to admire the Portuguese tiles which depict scenes of evangelisation. Cons/be aware of: - Church charges for entry outside of mass times (but as noted above, you can enter freely during mass). - Some tourists entered during mass and inconsiderately took lots of photos, which was distracting for those attending the mass. - During the Sunday 11.30am mass I attended, the Coimbrass (Coimbra brass band) was playing loudly right outside the church and it was almost impossible to hear some of the church music and readings. The local council should put restrictions on where & when the brass band plays as I don’t think this was within the church ministry’s control.

It is a National Monument in Coimbra, Portugal, because the first two kings of Portugal are buried here. Nothing remains of the early Romanesque monastery. Built around 1131. Most of it dates from a major restoration in the 1500s, which followed the Portuguese Gothic style of the time. Interior is decorated with baroque tile panels. The monastery was the reason the university was established in Coimbra, as it was Portugal’s famous medieval school. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Level terrain, lots of easy walking to get here
S V — Google review
The Santa Cruz Church in Coimbra is one of the most fascinating places I’ve visited in Portugal. From the moment you enter, the atmosphere feels rich with history and devotion. The main altar is absolutely magnificent — a masterpiece of ornate carvings and golden details that immediately draw your eyes upward. The relicários (reliquaries) are particularly impressive, showcasing sacred treasures with exquisite craftsmanship that speaks to centuries of faith and artistry. Each one seems to tell its own silent story. Finally, the tombs of Portugal’s first king, located inside the church, add a deeply historical and emotional layer to the visit. Standing before them, you can almost feel the weight of Portugal’s beginnings and the enduring legacy of Coimbra’s royal past. Overall, Santa Cruz Church is not just a beautiful monument — it’s a journey through history, art, and architecture all in one unforgettable place.
Murillo P — Google review
Founded in 1131 by Augustinian canons, the church is the burial site of Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques (D. Afonso Henriques), and his son, Sancho I (D. Sancho I). The royal tombs were sculpted by Nicolau Chanterene. Although originally built in the Romanesque style, little of that design remains. In the 16th century, the church was extensively rebuilt in the Manueline style under the direction of Diogo de Boitaca and Marcos Pires.
Seokjin H — Google review
Beautiful church worth visiting. Interesting is that the outer door facade structure in the front was added from a piece of another church!

Churches & Cathedrals
The New Cathedral of the Holy Name of Jesus in Coimbra is a 17th-century Catholic cathedral that showcases a blend of Mannerist and Baroque styles in its facade and interior. Originally built as a Jesuit church over a century, it was designed by architect Baltazar Alvares, drawing inspiration from Lisbon's Mosteiro de Sao Vicente de Fora. After the expulsion of the Jesuits, it became vacant until it was designated as the new cathedral in 1772.
Construction of this cathedral began in 1598 as the church of the Colégio das Onze Mil Virgens (College of the Eleven Thousand Virgins), founded by the Jesuits. It was completed in 1698. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal in 1759, the building was repurposed, and in 1772 it became the co-cathedral of the Diocese of Coimbra, replacing the former Sé Velha as the seat of the bishop. The structure began in the Mannerist style and was completed in the Baroque style, particularly evident in the upper sections of the façade.
Seokjin H — Google review
Not my favorite cathedral, architect looks modern and the woman’s guard having a long face asking for donation 1 euros by force per person without proof .. LoL

The New Cathedral of the Holy Name of Jesus in Coimbra blends elegance with history. Its striking Baroque façade invites you inside to discover serene chapels and intricate altars. Standing in the quiet interior, you can truly feel the city’s deep spiritual and cultural roots.

The New Cathedral of the Holy Name of Jesus is a stunning place to visit. I especially loved the beautiful altar — it’s truly the highlight of the cathedral. New Cathedral Type: Cathedral Time spent: 15-20 min Parking: available Bike parking: not available WC: available Entrance: paid [1+EUR] Path for disabled: available The "New Cathedral" was originally the church of the Jesuit's university college in Coimbra, established in the city in 1543. In 1759, the Jesuit Order was banned from Portugal by the Marquis of Pombal, Prime Minister of King José I. In 1772, the bishopric seat was transferred from the old Romanesque Cathedral of the city (now called the Old Cathedral of Coimbra) to the spacious and more modern Jesuit church.

Excellent Cathedral much bigger and brighter than the old one (Vehla). Anyway a place of worship does not distinguish from the other. Heavy baroque style with big wooden carved pieces gilded in gold. Must see cathedral and this does not have entrance fee like the old one. I do not understand why they charge entrance fee for a place of worship, if you feel that you need to donate just do it.
MICHAEL — Google review
The Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Sé Velha de Coimbra) is a truly unique and imposing landmark, standing as one of the best-preserved examples of Romanesque architecture in Portugal and an enduring symbol of the country's early independence. What makes it particularly distinctive is its fortress-like appearance, with thick, crenelated walls and narrow windows, reflecting its dual purpose as a place of worship and defense during the Reconquista. Despite its robust exterior, the cathedral features a magnificent Romanesque portal adorned with intricate sculptures, hinting at the artistry within. Inside, its most unique feature is its early Gothic cloister, considered the first Gothic cloister to be built in Portugal, showcasing the transitional architectural styles of the era. The interior also boasts a striking 16th-century gilded Gothic altarpiece by Flemish masters and numerous sculpted capitals throughout the nave that reveal a fascinating blend of Romanesque, Arabic, and pre-Romanesque influences. This combination of formidable defensive design, pioneering Gothic elements, and rich artistic detail makes the Sé Velha an unparalleled historical monument.

Casa-Museu Bissaya Barreto is a charming museum that showcases the eclectic collection of works of the renowned Portuguese physician and art enthusiast, Bissaya Barreto. Housed in his former mansion, the museum features a fine-art collection including paintings, sculptures, and decorative pieces from various periods. The collection reflects Barreto's emphasis on Beauty, Order, Perfection, and Aesthetics.
A fascinating, well kept house full of beautiful art and objects. I was very fortunate to have a guided tour with a university student who was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. I recommend a visit. It's close to the aqueduct and botanical gardens. Opens 11 to 13 and again in the afternoon most days. Well worth the 3 euro admission. Edit unbelievably this was not posted originally, apparently a photo I included of a small bronze statue violates rules on explicit content! The ridiculous affects of AI! Now I've deleted the photo maybe it will be published?

(Translated by Google) Guided tour at lunchtime (available once or twice a month) for 3 euros, about half an hour, with coffee included. Enough to get an idea of the main points of the house. However, I would like to see a little more focus on the life and work of the patron and not so much on the furniture and decoration. The house and gardens themselves are very beautiful and worth the price of the ticket alone. It is not a must for foreign tourists passing through Coimbra, but it is good to spend an hour.

Jardins da Quinta das Lágrimas is a historic 12-hectare garden in Coimbra, offering a serene escape with its lush green spaces, leafy trees, and captivating water ponds. It's an ideal spot for families to enjoy outdoor activities and leisurely walks. The garden holds historical significance as the setting of the tragic love story between Dom Pedro and Ines de Castro in the 14th century.
Last time we were here while exploring the town. A couple of our friends are visiting in Portugal so we are lucky to stay at this property! The place like to visit over and over again

A beautiful hotel with fantastic guest service. The grounds around the hotel are luxurious, with gardens and woods with paths to wander and explore. Individual examples of unique trees from around the world. We stayed in the contemporary wing. There are also rooms available in the historic portion of this former mansion. Located across the river from the old town of Coimbra, it has easy access (we used the Bolt rideshare app) to explore the town and the University of Coimbra.

Wonderful grounds, including a great arboretum. Delightful pool area. Old world charm inside the main building. Particularly helpful staff. Good food. Some signs of age / wear in the room we were in and a long wait for a G and T before dinner - but these are minor points. Would love to return

These are the beautiful gardens in the Hotel Quinta das Lagrimas in Coimbra. Telling of the tragic story of the Crown Prince Dom Pedro and Ines De Castro. It also holds the Banyon tree, winner of the 2025 tree of the year. As you can see in the photo, it's absolutely huge. When staying at the hotel, these gardens are a must to see.

This is a historic landmark with an ancient story behind. Some places feel mysterious and enchanted. Very beautiful and green garden, with huge trees. Some of the paths need maintenance and they can be very slippery during wet weather. There is an entry fee. It was worth the visit, a must see in Coimbra.

Gorgeous hotel and spa in the renovated palace of Dom Pedro. The gardens are magnifent and feature an amazing variety of trees from around the world. (Including a sierra redwood from the Duke of Wellington). The service is top notch as was the breakfast buffet. The rooms include older rooms in the palace and newer rooms in the spa/hotel addition. The pool is perfection! We highly recommend staying here.

It’s hard to even name it a tourist trap, because there is LITERALLY NOTHING to see except a big tree and fake ruins. I have no idea what is the reason for them to ask for 3€ entrance fee.

We absolutely loved this place!! The small fee to get in, 2,50€, is definitely worth it. We loved the beautiful archway into the area where we saw the most amazing tree I've ever seen. The fountain/pond, and the amphitheater were so peaceful with birds singing and dancing in the sun. The history is sad and tragic but now it is so peaceful and serene. After resting in the joy of birdsong, shade and gentle breezes my husband and I hiked up to the top of the trails. The flowers were amazing up there. We DEFINITELY recommend a visit and will absolutely be returning.

The Ponte Pedonal Pedro e Inês in Coimbra is a beautiful pedestrian bridge offering lovely views of the Rio Mondego. 🌉 It’s a peaceful place for a walk or to take photos, especially with the scenic backdrop of the city and the river. However, when we visited, we noticed that some pieces of glass were broken and should definitely be replaced for safety reasons and to preserve the bridge's appeal. Despite this, the bridge still offers a pleasant experience, and it’s a nice spot to enjoy the views and capture some great moments.
Lilia S — Google review
Nice bridge made with coloured glass. You can have nice views of the river and enjoy the walk.
Anto N — Google review
As part of our Rota de Inês e Pedro, the Ponte Pedonal Pedro e Inês was an absolute highlight—both for its modern architecture and its poignant connection to the tragic love story of Pedro and Inês. Stretching 275 meters over the Rio Mondego, this pedestrian bridge, opened in 2006, feels like a metaphor for the lovers themselves: two paths that don’t quite meet perfectly, symbolizing their fated separation . The bridge’s striking design, created by Cecil Balmond and António Adão da Fonseca, features colorful glass balustrades that bathe the walkway in hues of blue, pink, green, and yellow. These colors shift with the light, creating a kaleidoscope effect that feels both whimsical and meditative. It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the warm glow of the evening transforms the bridge into a surreal, almost dreamlike space . Situated in Parque Verde do Mondego, the bridge connects both sides of this lush park, making it a perfect stop during a leisurely walk or bike ride along the river. If you’re following the path of Pedro and Inês, as we did, it’s easy to imagine the lovers meeting in secret, just as you reach the central plaza that joins the two walkways. The structure itself seems to echo the tension and the longing that defined their relationship . Tip for visitors: After crossing the bridge, continue exploring the nearby Quinta das Lágrimas or the Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha to deepen your understanding of this legendary love story. The bridge offers fantastic photo opportunities, so plan your visit during the golden hour for the best views.

The Chapel of São Miguel is a historic Catholic chapel located within a university campus. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior is a treasure trove of vibrant art and architecture. The walls and ceiling are adorned with colorful 17th-century azulejos, while religious paintings and an impressive Baroque organ add to the rich history of the chapel.
As with most places in Portugal, this location takes your breath away. It's awe-inspiring to think about when it was built and how it has been maintained in such beautiful condition.

The current chapel was begun in 1517, replacing a smaller private oratory that had existed on the site since the 12th century. The initial design was created by Marcos Pires, and after his death, the construction was completed by Diogo de Castilho. The chapel features a blend of Manueline and Baroque architectural styles, reflecting the unique characteristics of Portuguese sacred architecture. It is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. ※ Included in the Combined Ticket: University + Science Museum.

This chapel is very beautiful and bright, and there's a nice oversized organ to the right of the chapel.

Beautiful chapel, intricately decorated with tiles. The space is bigger than most chapels one would come across. The uniqueness of this place is the color of the tiles, they aren't the solely the usual blue azulejos that you come across all of Iberia and the ceiling is wonderful. One can't buy tickets only to the chapel. It's a combo with the university and the royal rooms or a higher combo that includes timed entrance to the library next door. The combo can be used across a couple of days.
Khashayar S — Google review
The Chapel of São Miguel (Capela de São Miguel) in Coimbra is a highly unique and historically significant part of the University of Coimbra's Paço das Escolas, serving as a prime example of Portuguese sacred art. Its most striking feature is the extraordinary, intricately carved 18th-century Baroque organ, considered one of the finest in Portugal, with its elaborate gilded decoration and powerful sound. The chapel's walls are completely covered with magnificent 17th-century azulejo tiles, depicting scenes from the Bible and creating a visually stunning, immersive atmosphere. Beyond these, its rich Mannerist and Baroque painted ceiling adds another layer of artistic grandeur. Despite its relatively modest size, the Chapel of São Miguel uniquely combines profound artistic richness with a long-standing role as the spiritual and ceremonial heart of one of the world's oldest universities.

One of the coolest and most authentic Fado experiences in Coimbra - and my first time seeing Fado live! The day before, I visited the Fado Museum in Lisbon to learn the history, and coming here to hear it performed in person made it all come alive. The singers and musicians were incredible, and the storytelling between songs helped me understand why Coimbra’s Fado has such a different soul. I also appreciated the glass of Port wine after the show! Highly recommend buying tickets ahead of time and arriving about 15 minutes early to get good seats. Totally worth it.

This museum showcases a collection of historical scientific instruments and specimens gathered from various scientific disciplines at the University of Coimbra. The Laboratorio Chimico (Chemical Laboratory) and the Gabinete de Física (Physics Cabinet) are authentic spaces where university classes were once held. The Gabinete de Curiosidades (Cabinet of Curiosities) presents a modern interpretation of 17th–18th century European curiosity rooms, displaying a wide array of rare natural history specimens. Note: The museum is divided into two separate buildings located on either side of the street. ※ Included in the Combined Ticket: University + Science Museum.
Seokjin H — Google review
I visited the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra expecting a dynamic, interactive experience. Unfortunately, I left quite disappointed, especially considering the 12-euro entrance fee. The museum mainly showcases a collection of minerals, an old physics classroom filled with instruments, and a historical chemistry lab. While these spaces may have some educational value, they feel more like exhibits of outdated objects rather than an engaging science experience. Some interactive stations are available, but many were either out of order or simply too old to function properly. It’s frustrating to pay for a science museum and find so many displays labeled "out of service." The overall impression is of a place stuck in the past, offering very little in terms of modern, hands-on scientific exploration. In short, the value for money is quite poor. If you're expecting a vibrant, interactive science center, this is not it. It's more of a museum of old instruments than a museum of science.

This location was included with our advance Library ticket, but it was not particularly interesting, informative, or thoughtfully laid out. It felt like each display and corresponding explanation were an afterthought, with no real cohesion or story to tell. Would not pay to visit.

The building was built by the Marquis de Pombal, a Portuguese politician and advisor to King Joseph I. Built in 1772, the building is the oldest research center in Portugal. It includes a collection of scientific instruments from the 18th and 19th century Physical Museum, the collections of botany, zoology, anthropology and mineralogy of the Museum of Natural History, as well as the collections of the Astronomical Observatory and the Geophysical Institute of the University of Coimbra. In my opinion, the museum is not very rich and some of the exhibits are not working. You can visit it.

Spanning 80 hectares along the Mondego River, it offers extensive trails for walking, running, and cycling. The lush vegetation provides an ideal setting for activities such as jogging and birdwatching. Despite being a protected area with dense foliage, it also serves as a leisure park for locals seeking an escape from urban life.
Choupal National Forest – A Fantastic Family Picnic Spot with a Bamboo Forest and a Cozy Café Choupal National Forest is a fantastic destination for a family outing, offering a perfect mix of nature, relaxation, and unique attractions. The bamboo forest is a stunning highlight—walking through it feels like stepping into another world, with towering bamboo creating a serene and shaded environment ideal for peaceful strolls and photo opportunities. Mustafa A — Google review
he history of the church of Santiago began in the middle of the 10th century with the donation of its land to the Monastery of Lorvão. However, the consecration of the church only occurred in 1206. Its construction seems to have lasted for many years. Throughout history, the church has undergone several changes. It even built a second church over the first in the 16th century. This was removed during the restoration in the early 20th century. Due to this, but also to the architectural originality of many of its parts, there is no consensus on the chronology of its structure. In any case, such interventions do not diminish the architectural richness that the church of Santiago possesses. It is an example of the Romanesque school of Coimbra. The church features traces of fortitude, sober decor, and small openings. Thus privileging the military-defensive character of its stone construction, as is typical of the Romanesque. A prominent and peculiar work of the 12th-century Romanesque school of Coimbra is the southern portal. Note the geometric shapes that refer to the flora. These are the results of previous studies carried out in the Old Cathedral. This same style, but from a later period, can be identified in the main portal. If you're curious about what's in the region, take a look at the free audio guide at this link: https://izi.travel/en/c125-coimbra/en I hope you enjoy your time in Coimbra!

Torre de Anto is a 16th-century tower in Coimbra that now houses an exhibition about fado music. It also features an arts and crafts gallery and a small museum with information about the Coimbra guitar and the political expression of Fado during the dictatorship. The entry fee is low, and visitors have the option to access three museums for two weeks by paying a little extra. Despite some maintenance issues, it's considered worth visiting for its beauty and informative content.
This is actually the tower at Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Coimbra - NOT Torre de Anto but right next to it. Search it out. Spectacular 360 view from the top of this tower. The stairs are an experience - narrow and steep with solid hand railings though. Kids would love it. You won’t find a better view of Coimbra. Very inexpensive admission. Highly recommend!

Small fado museum but worth a stop for views and learning a bit about fado music.
Todd M — Google review
It cost very little to visit this museum and I suppose you get what you pay for. The museum was over three floors, I think, and consists of various exhibits, including guitars and digital information panels. Unfortunately most of the information panels did not work properly and I couldn't change the language to English. The museum seemed a bit disorganised with no inherent logic. Maybe it's better for the Portuguese visitor, but for an English speaker it was almost useless.
Da S — Google review
Very small museum and no cards accepted. Most of the interactive monitors are defective or only play the text in Porrugiesian. We have rarely been able to take away so little information from a museum and are disappointed. It's a shame really, the location and the building (tower) would have been perfect for it.
Andy S — Google review
Small museum inside the Anto tower. Despite its size, it has a lot of information about the Coimbra guitar, Fado music and how it became a form of political expression during the dictatorship. The audio guide for the tour includes lots of traditional songs and there’s also video footage of Fado players. Very interesting and worth a visit. Additionally, the entry fee is very low and you have the option of paying a little extra to get entry to 3 museums instead of one, good for 2 weeks
Patricia F — Google review
It's a small museum on Fado's history in the center of Coimbra The view from the tower is not great as the windows have some bars that cover much of the scenery outside. If you go during the last Saturday of the month it's free so I recommend it. Overall if you don't care about fado you can skip this landmark even if the price for the ticket is low.
Giovanni — Google review
The tower is very beautiful and the museum about fado is very informative. It is worth visiting, the entrance fee is very low. However, the bottom floor seemed to be out of order and it wasn’t possible to access the toilet.
Daniella A — Google review
Nice but very small and no open views. It’s a very small tower and it’s actually just a small Coimbra Fado guitar museum that I found interesting.

Historical landmark
The Aqueduto de São Sebastião, also known as Arcos do Jardim, is a 16th-century historical monument in Coimbra. It stands at about 30 meters tall and spans nearly a kilometer with intricate arches and remarkable stonework. Each arch features unique carvings such as rosettes, shells, crosses, or royal coats-of-arms.
Built between 1568 and 1570 by order of King Sebastião (D. Sebastião) and designed by Filipe Terzi, this aqueduct was constructed on the remains of a former Roman structure. Its purpose was to supply water to the Alta (Upper Town) of Coimbra. The aqueduct is approximately 1 kilometer long and composed of 21 arches. A statue of Saint Roch (São Roque) stands at the northern end, while a statue of Saint Sebastian (São Sebastião) marks the southern end. Due to its location beside the University of Coimbra Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico), it is also commonly known as Arches of the Garden (Arcos do Jardim).

Restaurant Jardim da Manga is a beloved establishment in Coimbra, offering delicious home-cooked Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant has been a staple in the city for generations and is known for its amazing codfish and classic panados. It's not a fancy Michelin-starred place, but rather a simple, community-oriented eatery with friendly staff. Situated near the Monastery of Santa Cruz, it overlooks the Jardim de Manga, adding to its relaxed and lively atmosphere.
Best comfort food in town. Came to Coimbra to work, had almost every lunch and dinner here - it was always good food, with several dishes to choose from. The whole team is very friendly, all in all highly recommendable. Wish I had a restaurant like this in my hometown…

Relaxed and friendly restaurant overlooking the Jardim de Manga - a national monument which was once part of the monastery. This gives it a very calm feel while still remaining lively. The restaurant offers self-service or regular table service. The food is very good, and the prices reasonable. We went there with two small children, and the waiter was very helpful. Overall it’s a very typical Portuguese family-friendly restaurant offering great food, and popular at lunchtimes with local office workers. English is of course spoken if you don’t feel your Portuguese is up to it.

An institution in our city. My family has been coming here for 3 generations. The food is simply amazing - home cooked Portuguese style. The codfish is always delicious and the “panados” are a classic. This is a restaurant that has close ties with the community and the history of the city. The staff is one of a kind too. This is not a Michelin star style restaurant it’s a simple no non-sense place.

Fantastic place for kids! Lots of activities and fun games. The kids from 2 to 10 years old were all well entertained and us parents too! Definitely worth a visit. We are looking forward to go back as we didn’t manage to explore everything during the 1 hour and half of our visit. A great place for families in Coimbra.
Francesca A — Google review
Creativity with children is about letting them experiment. We were there with 4 children, all under 6. We were closely watched, made to clean up even spaces that weren’t interacted with by us. There was no fun or creativity allowed The final straw was when the monitor of the activity shouted at one of the kids. Needs to be a space for children to be creative, not adults idea of an aesthetically pleasing space. The adults there should be actively using the materials parallel to the kids. We felt So uncomfortable and not welcome. Was also quite expensive…
Livy L — Google review
I didn’t actually go inside the UCI Exploratorium—after speaking with the staff at the reception, I realized it was mainly a center designed for children. Based on that, I decided not to buy a ticket. Still, I left disappointed. The name "Exploratorium" and the fact that it’s linked to the University of Coimbra gave me the impression it would be a proper science center, with interactive exhibits and activities for all ages. Instead, it turns out to be mostly a place for kids, with little to attract or engage adults. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with a space for children, but I found the branding quite misleading. If you’re expecting a serious or hands-on science experience as an adult, this is probably not the place for you.
Cosimo M — Google review
Excellent place, with a variety of activities which are perfect not only for Science classes, but also for spending some time discovering the world again through the eyes of your children. Interesting exhibitions, different topics to be covered! A big plus for the amazing staff (thank you, Miriam!) who are well-prepared, helpful and with you every step of the way. Excellent experience for everyone!

Very nice space to visit. I'd recomend however: - Repair or at least post as offline experiences that damage. - Some experiences are not clear what to do, what to expect. Visual&Step communication would surely help. - Works best for older children, but younger will also enjoy, even if through unexpected ways
Pablo O — Google review
Good place to bring your kids, it has some expositions with activities about science that they can explore. It offers a birthday party program great for the kids, but not so great to the parents: if for any reason you stay with your child during the party, you cannot go with them to the activities, and are then forced to stay in the meals' room with not much to do for more than one hour. I'd recommend visiting with kids, otherwise it's too simple for just adults to enjoy.

The Mercado Municipal D. Pedro V, also known as the Coimbra Market, is a lively indoor market situated in the heart of Coimbra, Portugal. Dating back to 1867, this historic market offers a wide array of fresh produce, meats, seafood, and local delicacies. The bustling atmosphere and charming building make it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. In addition to food items, the market also features stalls selling bargain clothing and pastries.
Very clean, modern and organized market, on the second floor you would find a few restaurants with such a diverse but delicious menus! I recommend the francesinha with pizza dough/fusion italian/portuguese, and the feijoada, brazilian dishes and creamy soups! Good prices for the amount and quality of food.

One of the best places to experience the real Coimbra! The Mercado Municipal D. Pedro V is not just a market – it’s a living piece of the city. Here you find everything: fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and meat straight from local producers, regional cheeses, bread, flowers, and even small cafés hidden between the stalls. Every vendor has a story, and the atmosphere is warm and authentic, full of voices, colors, and the smell of fresh produce. Prices are very fair compared to supermarkets, but the real value is the experience: walking through the corridors feels like stepping into the soul of Coimbra. Perfect for locals and for travelers who want to see more than the tourist side of the city.

Very disappointing. Having visited the Water Museum in Lisbon we had hoped to see some machinery and find out more about how water was supplied to Coimbra. We were the only people there. There was a very small display of water metres and a cut away of a fire hydrant. Two screens showed where the water fountains are located in Coimbra but there was nothing else, no obvious art or other exhibitions that others have referenced. The receptionist was welcoming and friendly. Other than providing a pleasant walk by the river and some interesting moss and fern covered trees near the museum it’s not worth visiting. It is however free!

Park
Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra is an elegant 18th-century garden featuring formal flower beds, grand fountains, and tropical plant-filled greenhouses. Nestled in the heart of Coimbra, this university-run botanic garden offers a serene retreat with distinct zones clearly marked on maps throughout its 13-hectare expanse. Founded in 1772, it stands as one of Portugal's oldest and most historically rich gardens.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... Even though it was raining, it did not put us off walking around these beautiful gardens. There is so much to see in these well-tended gardens. We will definitely go again, maybe May, when plants and flowers will be colourfully in bloom. Free entry, no queue. Well worth a visit 😍

Stopped by in Coimbra on our way to a mountainous retreat. We were told this was a nice garden / park to visit. We were lucky to catch some sun that was blazing into the garden. An older attraction for sure. But we got some nice smells from the variety of plants and flowers!

The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra is a peaceful oasis in the city. Strolling among exotic plants, towering trees, and colorful flowers feels like traveling the world through nature. It’s the perfect spot to relax, reflect, and enjoy Coimbra’s timeless charm.

The Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra is a beautiful botanical garden. Entry was free, and the garden is filled with many gorgeous, shady trees that make it a peaceful place to explore. It’s located very close to the university, making it easy to visit while exploring the campus. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Coimbra!

I loved it. Google maps was a bit inaccurate about guiding me to the entrance from my hotel but eventually I found the entry road and quickly forgot about the confusion. I thought everything about this place was spectacular. The uppermost section framed by Roman aqueducts, the meandering walkways lined with trees and shrubs and flowers.

The Jardim Botânico de Coimbra is one of the largest and most beautiful botanical gardens in Portugal. Located in the heart of Coimbra, south of the university campus, situated on a hill, it covers an area of approximately 13.5 hectares. The garden was founded in the second half of the 18th century as part of the Natural History Museum by the prominent Portuguese politician Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, better known as the Marquis de Pombal (1699-1782). Visitors can admire nearly 4,000 exotic plants native to all continents, as well as numerous sculptures and fountains.

Very nice view over the city Coimbra. We walked there, which is not really a recommendation, but doable. Steep hill and walking on the road... Good training, and nice view as a reward.

"Homage to Fado of Coimbra" is a beautiful sculpture by Celestino Alves Andre, paying tribute to the Coimbra Fado. The sculpture depicts a woman with the body of a Portuguese guitar and was unveiled in 2013 near the Arco de Almedina. This artwork captures the essence of Coimbra's musical tradition.
(Translated by Google) It is a different, poetic statue. expresses a relationship between fado and women in the form of a guitar. It totally conveys that idea and does so in a creative and original way. It is not easy to photograph it because the light is from above, I mean from above, or the natural light does not shine directly on the statue; I mean to take good, good photos, you would have to have some kind of movie-type lighting; This does not mean, obviously, that you cannot take the photos you want, but obviously other statues better placed for natural light are more photogenic. The Olympic Pools Complex in Coimbra offers excellent facilities for travelers, with the option to choose between a 50m or 25m pool. The pools are open from 7am to 10:30pm and the changing facilities are spacious. However, it's advisable to have cash as foreign cards are not accepted. The complex also includes a gym and dining area.
Excellent place to swim with 2 swimming pools 50m and 25m; it's safe and clean; good natural light as well; swimming accessories available (like small planks); good locker room & wc; an easy place to go with a good public transportation system. They do not have a hair dryer and you have to bring a lock for the locker. Personal cleaning products you also have to take with you, towel, slippers and touches for the hair. Students has discounts including PhD ones.

Excellent facilities. Reviewing as traveller visiting Coimbra. €2.50/90mins. You can choose either the 50m or 25m pool. Make sure you have cash if you don't have a Portuguese bank card. As their machines do not take foreign cards/contactless. The receptionist was very helpful advising of times and services. Pools open from 7am-10.30pm Changing facilities was big and spacious. The locker key wristband is useless. Mine came off easily as I was swimming and fell to the bottom of the pool. So leave key with your flipflops/sliders. Showers are partitioned without curtain. And you could adjust the temperature. This was the hottest shower I've experienced in a local swimming pool across Europe! Fab as it also has a swimsuit spinner machine to wring out water.
Ly M — Google review
I really enjoy the place. For €2.10 (student price) you can swim for almost two hours. The place is well taken care of. The changing rooms are very clean and there are private cabins for changing if you want. The pools themselves are great, just be careful with the hour you go. I used to go around 6-7.30 pm and they were full of swimming classes so there was only one lane for people not in one of those. Now I go later and I basically have a lane for myself every time.
