The Torpedo Factory Art Center is a former naval munitions factory turned into an art haven, housing over 160 artists in 82 open studios. Visitors can explore and purchase a wide range of artworks including paintings, photos, mixed media pieces, sculptures, and jewelry. The center also offers free demos on Saturdays where patrons can watch the artists at work and engage in discussions about their creative process.
There’s 3 floors to explore inside the Torpedo. There’s different exhibition on each floors and the arts are for sale as well. The 3rd floor is like a little museum that showcases the history of Toledo factory, African American Waterfront Heritage Trail and some Archaeological stuff was on display too. You will enjoy visiting if you love artwork. Parking garage and street parking is available. No tickets needed for entry.
Ogun T — Google review
It’s free! There are three floors full of little shops displaying art work of various kinds taking up this whole building! We enjoyed how you can see the arts work space and watch them create. There’s a huge variety, but almost everything was very expensive in all the shops. Needless to say, but we didn’t buy anything but still had a good time walking and taking in all the artists and their work. Would recommend if you’re looking for an art piece or just killing time.

Service in atmosphere was on point food was nice and all you can eat for brunch. Great views, great customer service and under direction of Chris from housewives of Potomac. This place has a few good reasons why you should check it out I’m glad I did. PS be on a diet coming here. Paid parking below

I have been going here for 25 years. I love it. Lots of bathrooms. Good air conditioning. Fun shops nearby. You have to see the glass aquariums the print studios and the views from the studios around the elevators are fantastic. We met the current president Edward Mccluney. The sun print artist has items that say torpedo factory that make good gifts.
Beverly M — Google review
A nice building at a gorgeous river front location in Alexandria, VA. Spacious, with a lot of cozy boutiques and art shops, creative studios and workshops. The only thing that is missing there is a talent. And this is a must for any art center. But it is definitely a positive influence, more like a community gallery and public exhibition space.
Pine F — Google review
This was unlike anything we have ever been to. The building is separated into private studios where each artist displays their work and you can purchase items. They had different mediums from beautiful scarves and hats to photographs to sculptures. We liked how unique each different studio was. Will definitely return on our next trip!
Jennifer M — Google review
This place is Really really cool. It is a massive creative space with 3 whole floors of art studios and artists making, Exhibiting and selling some truly spectacular works of art, all within a historical building where they actually used to build torpedoes. There’s some poetry in the fact that a place that once only created instruments of Destruction is now a place of creativity and artistic beauty. If you really like art, or are looking for something nice to get for yourself or as a gift to someone you care about I totally recommend checking this place out. Even if you end up just looking around and the pieces that are for sale are outside your price range you will still be glad you came. Support your local artist and come check this place out.

There were so many places showcasing stunning artworks and paintings, but one piece really stood out—a breathtaking snow mountain scene painted by a talented artist. 🖌️🏔️ Her work was so realistic, it felt like you could step right into it! The best part? All her paintings were bought by an admiring fellow artist. 🎨👏 What an inspiration!

Carlyle House Historic Park is a captivating destination in Old Town, offering a window into Alexandria's colonial heritage. The centerpiece is the 1753 Carlyle House, an elegant manor with lush gardens and intricate interior carvings. Guided tours provide insight into the Carlyle family's influence and the house's role in American history, including hosting notable figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
We took a wonderful tour of Carlyle House. Joe was our guide and he was full of information. We enjoyed the tour and hearing how the house was renovated and saved from being torn down. We enjoyed hearing about the reconstruction, seeing the original parts of the home, and furnishings from the colonial period. Highly recommend.
Stardancer 6 — Google review
A wonderful historic house to visit. Built even before Mount Vernon and restored beautifully. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. It is only a short walk to this house from the waterfront.
Rachel R — Google review
I got my Keys to the City pass from the visitor's bureau, which opened at 10:00 am. My first stop was the nearby Carlyle House, which honored my Keys coupon. I noticed that tours start on the hour. It was around 10:10, and I didn't want to wait 50 minutes. Without any special request, a personal tour was begun for me at 10:10. Wow! Geoff was a wonderful historian. I thought he must have a decade of experience, but he actually was fairly new to the property. The tour was informational. The house is well-preserved, and the artifacts were helpful in imagining the lives of the contemporaries. There was a slave sleeping quarters shown, and I would like even more information about the enslaved people who created the wealth, did all the building, and worked on maintenance. There was good information about the roles of women in managing the household.
John E — Google review
Great tour. A knowledgeable docent gave us a comprehensive tour of the house with early history of Alexandria and America.
Yarissa G — Google review
Tour the house, our guide made it educational and fun. Totally recommend to visit the Carlyle house
Gonzalo ( — Google review
Guided tour of the house or self guided (free) admission of the basement. Great stop for those interested in the local history.
Ben I — Google review
The lady giving the tour was nice and the house was beautiful. On the downside, the whole tour was about Carlyle’s family living in the house. His role in the local slavery business and him owning many slaves was not addressed ONCE. Not a single mention about the slaves living in the house, their storys etc. and what cruelty they had to endure at this dark point in time in the American history. Very sad and frustrating.
Jstn. 0 — Google review
I've lived here all my life, and this was the first visit to this piece of history. The house has been beautifully restored to the original time it was built. The docents were so very knowledgeable, which helped to bring the house to life.

The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Alexandria is a rare gem, offering visitors a glimpse into the world of an authentic apothecary that remained virtually untouched since its closure in 1933. The museum provides 30-minute tours that delve into the history of its renowned potions and showcases an array of preserved tinctures, scales, and peculiar bottles with handwritten labels.
What a cool authentic time capsule of an early US Apothecary. Well worth the time! They even had a letter from Martha Washington ordering supplies from them. The upstairs work shop contains all the original ingredients, storage bins, and tools of the trade that have been there for over 200 years.
Jim B — Google review
So worth checking out. A rare time capsule. So rare in fact, that even the original owners realized it was worth preserving with as much originality as possible...back in the 1700s! It's also worth your money for the guided tour. Our guide was wonderful.
Megan B — Google review
I had to pleasure of taking the poison tour that was offered by the museum, and I had so much fun learning about the way people in the late 1800 to early 1900s utilized what we now know was poisonous chemicals and herbs as unique treatment methods. It was so cool getting to tour the shop and storage spaces and learn about how the shop operated when it was still in business. I would love to come back and take another tour during their normal business hours to browse the exhibits, but Gray, our tour guide did a phenomenal job during our hour-long tour!
Mimi F — Google review
A preserved time capsule of an authentic apothecary. The guides were very informative and the exhibit showed original apothecary jars with the materials preserved inside. A unique look into the past.
Lola H — Google review
Great museum to visit if you like old vintage stuff. Tickets were 5$ for adults and 3$ for kids. The people working there are amazing and very friendly. Also their shop has a lot of things to check out.
Noel B — Google review
Amazing experience! Guide was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. This place is truly frozen in time, and you will learn so many surprising things about the way people used to treat ailments and practice medicine.
Emily H — Google review
Very interesting place to visit. We had a great tour guide that was able to answer any of our questions. I would reccomend stopping by if you're in the city.
Chris E — Google review
Great job preserving this piece of history. Worth seeing once. It is only the one room and there was no upstairs portion to see when I visited. The ticket clerk was not paying much attention to the simple rope blocking off the one room available to view. I might suggest they install a turnstile. It would also be nice to have a video of costumed apothecaries talking with clients in period garb and concocting a remedy. That would make it a better experience. Otherwise, you'll probably only spend 10-15 minutes here.

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a neoclassical shrine dedicated to George Washington, featuring an ornate hall, museum, and observation deck. Constructed between 1922 and 1932, the memorial's major interior spaces were left unfinished until after World War II. The building project brought together independent Grand Lodges of states and territories in a rare initiative among freemasons with national scope.
Such an amazing place. I saw this tower from my hotel and had to check it out. I figured the tour just took you up to the observation deck but there was so much more. Every room on every floor was packed full of history, art and architecture. Such grand spaces, only pictures can describe.
Jay S — Google review
Very Clean. Affordable tours. Great view at top. If you like architecture, there is plenty to see and learn on first and second floor. You can see and tour all in about 3-4 hours. For the history buffs, a lot of insights can be learned from the tours, specifically on the upper floors. 2 Active lodges are located here. Solve the elevator mystery!
Pepe L — Google review
Bummer of a time today, as I was very excited to explore and learn about Masons and GW’s involvement. Instead of learning about what Masons are and how meetings work and what their focus is, and how and why GW got involved, we were simply shuffled to each floor and told to look around. Each floor was vastly underwhelming, only a few notable pieces, such as a desk “thought to have been used by Washington.” They have a strand of his supposed hair, which is a big highlight apparently. With little explanation, we looked at bizarre costumes various masons and affiliate groups wear. View was nice, for $20 a hard pass. Wildly weird time. Wife is convinced this place is haunted. We live locally… any visitors reading this, skip unless you’re a Mason.
Devin O — Google review
Such a beautiful and historic landmark! The George Washington Masonic Memorial stands proudly over Alexandria and offers an amazing view from the top. The building itself is stunning, and the guided tour gives a lot of insight into both George Washington’s life and the Masonic history behind it. Peaceful, educational, and very well preserved — definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby.
Mina Z — Google review
The George Washington Masonic Memorial @ Alexandria is a neoclassical shrine dedicated to George Washington who was a Masonian himself. It was built during the period 1922-26 and offers a fascinating look at the history of Freemasonry. The tallest structure in the DC region, the top of the tower offers a panoramic 360 deg view of the DC region, the Potomac river and the town of Alexandria. It is advisable to take the guided tour as access to the top of the tower and use of elevators is aided by the staff
K M — Google review
Awesome! Loved it!! Wonderfully modern and air-conditioned, so makes for a great stop in the summer. Lots of George Washington artifacts, not just Masonic related. Although the Masonic history and chambers were really cool! Tour was $20/ea for 1 hour guided. Our guide, José, was fantastic! Very informative and such and interesting place. About 10 in our tour group. Book online ahead of time to guarantee entry. Ample free parking. It's rentable for events. Cool old "magical" elevators and don't forget the observation deck! The view is spectacular! I can't believe this place wasn't just crawling with people, but it was pretty quiet. Tour tickets grant you access for the entire day, so stay alls long as you like. Don't miss the clock that sat at Washington's bedside when he died. The attending physician cut the weight to mark the time for eternity.
CC — Google review
Great views. Museum rooms are put together rather well for being a Masonic temple. Neat artifacts and great tour guide. Worth a visit if you are in old town but the price for the museum is a bit excessive.

Gadsby's Tavern Museum is a historic site in Old Town Alexandria, VA, featuring two buildings - the tavern and the City Hotel. These were popular gathering places in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum offers tours showcasing artifacts from that era and hosts special events throughout the year. It was frequented by notable figures like Presidents Washington and Jefferson, offering visitors a glimpse into Colonial times.
I used my Keys to the City pass and paid extra $3 for the guided tour. Gary was delightful!!! The displayed artifacts and Gary's narration gave a great view of day-to-day life in the 1700's. I was pleased to hear quite a bit of respectful and relevant information about the work of slaves in the tavern.
John E — Google review
The guide was sick when I came so it wasn’t as fun to just go around reading everything. Worth checking out if you like history. Included in the city key pass. The person in the shop was really informative and nice. I was the only one there at 11am on a Friday .
Marina B — Google review
Nice visit to the museum. The museum has been carefully preserved and it is really cool to walk the footsteps of our founding fathers. What really stands out is the people who work there. The guides are impressive with their knowledge of the history and we were really glad to have learned so much. They make it very interesting. It is a nice tour and you should put it on your itinerary.

Stopped in Alexandria on our way down to Mt Vernon. Quaint museum and attached tavern/restaurant - Would highly recommend stopping by and paying $5/ticket to walk around or do the guided tour option.
Ben I — Google review
Stopped in for a quick lunch after being told from multiple people that this is a "must see" place in Old Town Alexandria. And let me tell you, they were right! It was lunch time so there were a few groups of people. There was a long wait time to get a table mainly due to low staffing. But everyone I encountered was super friendly and welcoming. After reading the pamphlet about the history of the tavern, I asked the waitress if they still sold the rum punch because I didn't see it on the menu. She said that they do and would check if they had any made. Even though she was super busy helping so many tables, she made a special trip to the basement to get my drink. I felt so sorry for her because then other patrons started asking me what this drink is that looked so good and they started asking for it as well! All in all, I would certainly recommend and will be going again when I'm back in town. Good food, friendly staff and many, many years of history in this place!
Chad A — Google review
What a little gem of American history. Gary did a fantastic job of bringing that history to life with his tour. The museum is set up for self-guided tours, but if there's a docent available, you'll have a much better experience - the stories are great! Pat in the gift shop was super friendly and helpful as well. A bargain at only $5!

I am happy I decided to add this museum to our trip. It was family day when we went so we had junior historians as our guides. They all were very knowledgeable and you and tell they worked hard.

Nice little place full of historical artifacts. It’s free and there were only few people inside. You are allowed to take pictures. The staff is friendly. There is a lot to learn if you are interested in history! Remember to also visit the historic site, if the weather is nice you can have a picnic in there, there are lots of tables and benches. Pets friendly.

Found this little park in the middle of the city, not knowing it had so much history. Took a wal around the fort and the canons were in amazing shape. Then I saw the history and how black slaves came here to fight for their freedom. It has a old cemetery , that they ask you to respect.

This is historic site and also a park, the headquarters building is a small museum. There are artifacts and interesting stories about the forts located around the DC area. This is the best preserved civil war era fort in the DC area. They have rebuilt one of the bastian's to the original specifications and armed it with period replica cannons. Admission and parking are free.

Nature & Parks
Nestled along the scenic Potomac River just south of Old Town Alexandria, Jones Point Park is a delightful blend of history and natural beauty. This park boasts an interpretive trail that invites visitors to delve into its rich past, including its significance during colonial times and as a shipyard in World War II. The highlight here is the historic lighthouse, Virginia's last remaining riverine beacon from 1855.
This is a really nice park. I have been here twice so far and both times I truly enjoyed walking around. I had no idea that all this was here, hidden underneath the Woodrow Wilson bridge and kinda just stumbled onto it the first time. I am so glad I did. There’s nice walking trails, a big open field, basketball courts, playgrounds, nice places to fish and even historical stuff like a big ship rudder DC Boundary Stones and an old lighthouse. Also despite being underneath the beltway it’s quite peaceful. I definitely recommend checking this place out.
Willku9000 — Google review
The park is beautiful and you can see the bridge and the river by stand here. However, it’s kind of boring if you not come with your friends or family, so called historical lighthouse is also not deserve to watch. Here’s a restroom and some basketball stands.
Jack L — Google review
Great park under the WW Bridge and across from the National Harbour good for walking/jogging, picnics, fishing, even a little local American history to take in. The Virginia area was definitely more maintained vs the Maryland and DC areas (looked forgotten about). The lighthouse needs to be restored big time...this is a piece of our history that should be conserved.

Parking is limited. You have access to Old Time from there by walking about 1 mile. Beautiful sightseeings, nature, and history in one place. You can also access the ramp to cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge by foot or bike towards Maryland. Restrooms available.
Dora C — Google review
Parking area is temporarily closed seemingly due to construction. Bathrooms are locked. Bikes and pedestrians can access as usual.

Beautiful, mostly shaded park. Historic signs along the trail share the history of the area. There is a child's playground, restrooms, a water faucet that even has a low bowl for pups, a basketball area and plenty of parking. It's fun to see the land markers for Maryland, D.C. and Virginia as you walk through the park. Worth checking out if you're in the area.
Ricki M — Google review
Nice park, wonderful view, good for hiking and photography. Unfortunately I went there for fishing and main fishing pier was the terrible place for bottom fishing. You will snagg on each cast for sure. There was another smaller pier where people were already fishing, probably that was ok. Bathroom was not very clean.

The Birchmere is a barnlike music performance space with a supper club-style main hall and a bandstand area. The venue offers shared tables where patrons can enjoy sandwiches, burgers, and pitchers of beer while watching the show.
A great intimate venue. They do serve food that is good and reasonably priced. A couple of points to note. The doors open at 5:00 for a 7:30 show. At 5:00 when the doors the box office gives you a number. At 6:00, they will start calling the numbers in order from 1. When your number is called you show your tickets and are allowed into the seating area. Once in, you may sit at any open seats. This is when you may order food. Because of the use of issuing numbers, folks arrive early and line up outside. If you want to sit up close to the stage, arriving as early as possible and getting in line is necessary. We got there by 4. Also of note, only electronic tickets from Ticketmaster are accepted. Screen shots will not work. Finally, it is a large parking lot but does fill up. A number of folks did use ride shares but the rideshare drivers have to enter when the majority of traffic is going the other way. Definitely a great intimate venue but best to know what to expect.

It's a good venue to see a show, but you need to be aware of how the seating works. 1st, when you get there, they give you a ticket with a number, then near show time, we will start calling the numbers in order over the loud speaker. That's how you enter, but from there, it's still general admission, so once inside, it's a mad rush to your choice of table/seats. It's kind of crazy. While waiting for them to call the numbers, there is a large area with a full bar. Once seated, you can order more drinks, and they have a full menu. We found the food to be ok, kind of tasteless, really. I asked my waitress about the fish and chips, but she said they were a hit or miss and try to steer people away, so I got the chicken tenders. This was our second time here. We enjoy the venue, they seem to get a good line up. Music sounds good. Only real issue is since you are sitting at long tables, you may have to look over your shoulder to see the stage or even have to turn your chair around. Some people also talk quite a bit during the show. We've enjoyed ourselves both times, even with the little annoyances. Staff is friendly and pretty prompt. No glasses of water only purchased bottles.

Went to The Birchmere to see Tweet and we had an amazing time. It is first come first serve seating. Bar in the lobby while you wait. Drinks were on point and food was good! Great customer service! It was my first time there and I will definitely return.
DeWanna T — Google review
This is a nice concert venue. They regularly have great music perfomers, and you're able to see them in a more intimate setting rather than at a large auditorium or arena. The venue sells food and drinks that you can consume during the show. They also have a gift shop if you're interested in getting a souvenir. I recently saw the Ohio Players perform there, and it was a good show. We were able to park on site for free.

First time here. Old warehouse turned concert-food venue. Drinks up front great, strong and cold. Food good, drinks inside so-so, and the show great.

We've been to The Birchmere a couple of times and enjoyed ourselves every time. This concert right here was one of the absolute best. Maysa was on fire!!!🔥🔥🔥
Carla B — Google review
You need to arrive early to get a line number, which is the order they let you in to get seats. The show started at 7:30pm and there were people already there at 3:30pm getting their numbers (I asked the people at my table what time they arrived since they were the 2nd group to be admitted). You see, 99% of the audience members were old retirees that were able to go early because they don’t work. The age of the audience also resembles the age of the venue itself. This place is a bit dumpy and run down — it desperately needs a renovation. I wouldn’t take anyone younger than 40 here for a date night. If your date is 50+ then they’ll fit right in. The food was overpriced for the quality. The seats in the music hall and the food reminds me of Sizzler’s. The fact that servers come out in the middle of the show, walk in front of the stage while the artist is playing their most popular song, and INTERRUPTS YOU to hand you a bill and take the bill is such an awful design. Have people pay for their dinner right when they ordered it or better yet, modernize and just have a QR code that’s tied to their table number and have them order and pay at the same time. I guess the latter would be too much for the type of audience that attends.
S T — Google review
We go there a lot. Their food is really good. One of my favorites is the blackened catfish. I usually get it. My husband got one of their flatbreads. The reason I love going there is the acoustics are great. Plus it's one of the few places that brings our favorite jazz performers

Nestled at the intersection of Prince and Lee streets, the Athenaeum is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture that adds a unique charm to Alexandria's historic landscape. Originally constructed in 1852 as a bank, this remarkable building has served various purposes over the years, including being a Union commissary headquarters and later a storage facility for an apothecary.
We hosted a 50 guest wedding ceremony and reception at the Athenaeum in September 2022 and had a wonderful experience! It is such a beautiful setting. We used the gorgeous back courtyard for our cocktail hour at sunset and it felt truly magical. The staff are wonderful to work with and it is in the heart of Old Town near hotels, shops and restaurants which is perfect if you have a lot of guests flying in like we did. The art adds a fun, modern element and we loved the artists featured the month of our wedding. We are so happy we chose the Athenaeum - highly recommend!

Pretty open gallery. There were arts on display that were kind of like scrap collage. They rotate exhibits so could be entirely different when you go.

Loved DJing here ! Recently DJd a wedding here. They had the ceremony in the garden. Setup a small speaker and mic system. The reception was in the main room. I will say pack light because there in way to roll in your equipment. It's fine, street parking available. Our up lights looked great in the ballroom / event space. Nice venue

The Alexandria Black History Museum is located in a significant 1940s building that played a role in the civil rights movement. The museum showcases the history of African Americans in Alexandria and Virginia, with a focus on their social, economic, and cultural contributions to the city since its establishment in 1749. Adjacent to the museum is the Watson Reading Room, which houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, videos, and historical documents related to African American history.
We learned a lot visiting this old library turned into a museum. I believe it is free for Alexandria residents and $3 for non residents.

What an incredible hidden gem in Alexandria. I've lived here for 13 years and I just now learned about the museum thanks to my friend who grew up in the area. There is so much history surrounding us and I'm glad I got to learn more about the black history that makes Alexandria what it is today. History is often ugly and painful but it is part of who we are as a society and nobody has the right to erase it. So please go support this museum now more than ever considering the efforts of current leaders in DC to erase history.
Marcos A — Google review
Small, more localized history museum. $5 if a tourist to enter. Not as exciting and historical as the National African American History Museuem, but more local. Wish I could've seen more.
Leonard — Google review
Small museum but a lot of information, changing exhibits and displays, even a little video. Friendly staff also. It focuses on Alexandria history and, having visited many of the other museums and historial sites, most of it was already known to me. But there was still alot of new stuff to learn.
Michael V — Google review
After three long years the Alexandria Black History Museum will reopen on March 2nd. The closure allowed for the museum to make some much needed repairs and provided the opportunity to prepare for a new exhibit Preserving Their Names: The Black Lives Matter Collection which brings to the forefront the tragic loss of Benjamin Thomas and Joseph McCoy who were both the victims of lynchings. The two jars on display are filled with the soil from the locations in the city were the young men were lynched. The new hours of the museum are Thursday-Friday from 11AM to 4PM, Saturday from 11AM-5PM and Sunday from 1PM-5PM. There also is $3 admission fee

Friendly and knowledgeable front desk staff, who encourage any question that a visitor might have. Two solid exhibits that are worth reading through, and it seems they have a lot of programming throughout the year that one could take advantage of.
Ariel R — Google review
It was a great experience, and the staff are great here. They have a thing when you walk in and you sit down to hear some information about black history or if you have any questions then they answer them. And they walk around with you to tell you about specific things that are in the museum. Learned a lot here!
Terry’ion B — Google review
Unfortunately, my visit to the Alexandria Black History Museum was not the greatest. -March 18, 2023 Based on visits to other local Black American Museums, the expectations were not met. The location was very small with limited items on display. There was no timeline of events reflective of those experiencing the hardships of being a Black American in Alexandria, Virginia. The use of terms like slavery or slaves was clearly absent from a majority of the displays and exhibit descriptions. Having to pay for a self-guided tour of a single room of displays and a short video presentation was quite disheartening. *The Howard County African American Culture Center in Columbia Maryland is similar in size, but was free of charge and was organized in a fashion to provide a clearer depiction of Black Americans during those time periods.

Alexandria National Cemetery is a beautiful and solemn military cemetery that commemorates the sacrifices of those who have fought for our country. The grounds are well-maintained, and visitors are welcome to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this important national monument.
I was visiting the African American Heritage Park when I noticed an Arlington-like cemetery beyond the trees... I made my way over there and was blessed by what I saw. Alexandria National Cemetery... I'd never heard of it. Beautifully landscaped solemn grounds memorializing those who sacrificed for this country.

I occasionally spend time in the area and finally was able to spend time here at the Alexandria National Cemetery. I enjoyed reading the history of this cemetery and the history of the national cemetery system (was not aware!). The grounds are solemn and well kept. My thoughts and prayers to all the service members here and their families. I'm glad I was able to spend some time here, learn about this place, and dwell on so many people's sacrifices.

A bit out of the way but an interesting corner of history. Much smaller than the well known military cemetery in Arlington but still an important little piece of history and it is still in use. Worth visiting for reflection on our history and the cost of war.

Alexandria National Cemetery is a historic cemetery established in the mid-1800s and maintained by the government. The gravestones look similar to those found at the famous Arlington National Cemetery. What's interesting about the Alexandria National Cemetery is that there are other cemeteries right behind it with older history and gravestones. Together, they make a peaceful place for a stroll to reflect on life.
Austin G — Google review
Clean, quiet and beautifully maintained, the cemetery is in the western portion of the Wilkes Street Cemetery complex. It's a collection of cemeteries dating as part back to 1751. If your into local history do a web search for the complex and Old Town Alexandra history to download a walking tour. It's a few blocks from the subway and boarders the US patent office where there is a tiny modern museum / exhibition space.

The Freedom House Museum is one of the many historical sites in Alexandria, Virginia that tells the story of the city's past. It focuses on the harrowing history of slavery in antebellum times, particularly highlighting the experiences of those who were brought from the Chesapeake Bay area and forced into slave markets in the deep South. The museum is located at 1315 Duke Street, where chilling exhibits and screens broadcast personal stories to provide context for visitors to grapple with this atrocious institution.
This museum did such a great job honoring the lives and history of the enslaved people that went through Alexandria. It is a heavy topic, but absolutely worth learning about. I would definitely recommend this museum! The employees were very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. There's parking in the back. Bathrooms on every floor. Elevator to access the 2nd and 3rd floors. They have stations for visitors to share their thoughts and ideas. Oh and they have a discussion room with seating if you wanted to reflect on what you saw with others.

What an incredibly wonderful hidden gem. This museum highlights one of Alexandria historical stories about enslaved people. This museum was the site of a slave dealer company and the enslaved people were kept in the facilities in back including a large courtyard. The museum is self-guided but the employees there can provide a good introduction along with fantastic maps to illustrate the timeline of events. This is history we should never forget and we must pay respect and honor to those men, women, and children who suffered under slavery. I implore everyone to please visit this museum and learn something new. Spread the information. Support historical preservation. We must never forget.

This museum was really good. I’ve been to several and this is worth seeing. A lot of history in Alexandria VA especially as it pertains to 1k to 2k slaves being sold to the Deep South from this building a year in the 1800’s. Free if you live in Alexandria. A small cost if you don’t.
Stephanie H — Google review
An important local history museum highlighting the role of slavery in the past of Alexandria and the continuing struggle for full equality. Would have liked more details, artefacts and photos but still an interesting experience.
Sean H — Google review
We finally made it to the Freedom House Museum, a celebration of freedom and achievement located in a house that once auctioned enslaved people. The museum effectively conveys the tragedy of slavery while sharing the stories of those in bondage, then the progress made by African Americans (especially by Virginians). Few people understand the enormous size of domestic human trafficking that took place before the Civil War, and the Freedom House Museum corrects this. A few notes: -The folks working there are very knowledgeable & can add a lot to your experience. Talk to them! -There is free parking in the back of the building, and handicap parking in the front. -Inexpensive entry fee (we were glad to support the museum’s mission!). You’ll leave uplifted: please don’t miss out!
Snailkite V — Google review
Was closed when I visited Old Town but I plan to visit again. The African American Museum occupies what use to be the offices of Franklin and Armfield who were the biggest slaves traders in Alexandria. Armfield bought the slaves and then sent them to Franklin in Mississippi and Louisiana to be sold at a higher price. By the 1830s they were offen selling a 1000 slaves a year. This made them the largest slave-trading company in the US intill 1836. Addition - Normally costs about five dollars but it turned out, as a resident of Alexandria, I got in free! A lot of the exhibits dealt with slavery/African American history via first person experiences on top of general history. Also it helped that I had visited some of the sites mentioned and knew some of the stories already. Helped me put things together. There was also a art exhibit. Nice little museum. Before I left I bought two books - Uncommon Ground : Archaeology and Early African American, 1650-1800 and Alexandria's The Freedmen's Cemetery ; A Legacy of Freedom. So I ended up with a lot books when I got home.

The park features a one-acre wetland inhabited by various species such as bullfrogs, green frogs, red slider turtles, and spotted salamanders. Visitors can explore the park's nature center with animals and environmental classes or take a leisurely stroll along the one-mile long nature trail that winds through streams, wooded hills, and freshwater marshland.
Nice, pleasant and well maintained. Few places have sewer access points and they stink. There is a kids play area and grill area with couple of seatings around the park. Trail connects to Holmes run and have a flat tar road trail as well as off road trail. Fall update: nice and vibrant colors

Gorgeous gem of a walking trail that offers a leisurely paved trail through the woods. There are moments where you can walk across stepping stones to get over the river. Besides the areas with stepping stones, this path is great for individuals with mobility limitations, with strollers or small children. There is free street parking available.

This was an awesome hiking spot surrounded by city. Lots of places for our kids to play in the river. Well maintained and hardly any trash. We always see a lot of broken glass in the rocks at different places we go. Did not see any here. We let our kids go barefoot and play. Parking was a pain due to the parking lots being closed because of the WUHAN Corona covid 19 virus. Or whatever its being called now.

Great Waves Waterpark, located in Alexandria's Cameron Run Regional Park, is a 20-acre attraction offering a variety of water-based activities. Visitors can enjoy waterslides, pools, mini-golf, and batting cages. The park features an enormous wave pool and thrilling water slides at the Reef. For younger kids, there are play pools with mini-slides and splash areas. Additionally, there is a climbing playground and sandbox for children to enjoy.
Visiting from out of state and I was so impressed with this little water park! Great slides and wave pool. A nice shallow pool for younger kids. Very few people there on a very hot June weekday, so almost no wait for water slides. A heads up though that no outside food or drink is allowed besides water bottles. (I didn’t see that on the website so we had to picnic before we went inside the park.) they let you come and go with your wristband on though.

Great Waves Waterpark is an absolute gem for families and friends looking for a fun day out! The water slides are thrilling, the wave pool is super fun, and the splash areas for kids are perfect for little ones. The park is clean, well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and attentive. I also appreciated the shaded areas and picnic spots for when we wanted to relax and enjoy snacks. It does get a bit crowded on weekends, but that's expected for such a popular spot. Definitely a must-visit during the summer!

The wave pool on a Thursday afternoon was very nice. Place is clean and there are a lot of life guards and plenty of seating. There are a couple of pools for the little ones along with a splash pad and slides for the bigger kids. Pizza was decent. There were dozens if not hundreds of summer camp kids if that matters.

Visited the waterpark today with my daughters. I was warned not to go by my brother but we went anyways. Nice place for the family. However, the issue is it's managed poorly. a DPR Summer Camp visited the park and left a horrible mess! I would not want to leave my children in the hands of these people. However, I along with several other people informed the manager of the park, working in the first-aid area, when we realized no one from DPR was returning to clean their mess, that someone needed to clean the area. She didn't do anything about it, even though she said she would. The workers in the sweets store didn't do anything about it either, they just sat on counters and talked and ignored our pleas. I started to clean the area myself but my daughters stopped me. The owners of this property should really evaluate its managers and workers. They are making a really nice place, trifling and nasty. I'd visit again if it was cleaner and better managed. Get new management! These are the only pictures I uploaded. I have more. DPR Summer Camps should be ashamed of themselves! Great Waves Water Park, you should have done much better!

My kids and I had a fantastic time at Great Waves park today. The park is very well kept, everything is in walking distance from each other and it was non stop fun. I wish they had a few more umbrellas out for families as the sun is a bit brutal out there. Food on site was good. Tasty fries and funnel cake was great as well. Dippin dots was a nice treat too. We will DEFINITELY be back! We got there at 1045. It is definitely better to get there early. Easypeasy parking and short line.

Really great place for kids! My 4 year old son LOVED it. Only downfall is the food and it’s prices . This would be a 5 star if you could bring your own food and if there a few more shaded areas.
Melyssa R — Google review
I had one of the most uncomfortable and disappointing experiences at Great Wave Water Park. First off, the shower, bathroom, and changing facilities were in a horrendous condition. The cleanliness was beyond unacceptable there was a dirty sanitary napkin left in the shower, tissue paper scattered across the changing room floor, and the benches were either stained with food or just filthy. The toilets? Absolutely disgusting. I felt extremely uncomfortable using any of the facilities, and it really ruined the start of my day there. But what made me furious was the complete lack of professionalism by the staff and management. The park was already closed, yet they continued to sell tickets knowingly, letting people in despite the fact that none of the water attractions were operating. Me and my family didn’t even get to step in the water. And when I asked for a refund after realizing the park was closed, the manager refused and instead tried to compensate with a voucher which I don’t plan using because I live out of state.A waste of my money and day off. I was shocked at how poorly everything was handled. I left feeling angry, disrespected, and completely let down by the service and cleanliness. I will definitely not be returning, and I would not recommend this place to anyone unless they seriously fix these issues.

Green Spring Gardens is a delightful destination for gardening enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The extensive grounds feature a historic house offering tours and tea, as well as garden shops, plant education, and a reference library. Visitors can meander through wooded valleys, by streams and ponds, taking in the fragrant native plants and exploring the tropical greenhouse. The gardens serve as a living classroom with hands-on horticultural learning courses for both kids and adults.
Well well, this review is long overdue! Last year we visited 'Green Spring Gardens' for the first time. Around the beginning of Spring on April 28, what a beautiful place to visit. It's a public park that includes a historic 18th century plantation house. Green Spring is in the heart of a national historic district listed on the National Register of Historic places in 2003. This garden is also part of Fairfax County's park system. It's beautiful, peaceful and the gardens are well maintained. There are plenty of shady spots around the walkway areas, ponds, a garden shop, a tea room in a historic house that includes a small gallery to exhibit local artists, a children's garden and herb & vegetable gardens. This is one of my favorite gardens in the NOVA area. It's always busy which makes me feel safe. There are a variety of landscapes to admire on the grounds. The visitor center and greenhouse is host to activities and talks all year round. There has never been a visit I did not enjoy or come away with feeling lighter and refreshed. I envy any neighbors who are within walking distance of this gem.

Super pretty no matter the time of year! Went here for homecoming photos and it did not disappoint! Very versatile in different areas to take photos and always very nice view 😊

Lovely garden, plenty of parking spaces on weekdays. Visitors and stuff are so nice!😊 you will find huge varieties of wild flowers and native trees. They also have several demonstration gardens, like dry, rain, pollinator, shade gardens. And don’t forget to check out the children’s garden, small and cute! And bring along your dog! After my first visit today, I want to come back for special events or even register camps for my kids. My parents absolutely love this place, we spent 1h walking around, which is not enough for sure!

The gardens were lovely. Lots of shady trees and places to explore. We had a (big) family picnic and saw everything from wedding photos being taken to people reading. We saw a heron by the pond and enjoyed looking at local art in some of the buildings. It is pet and kid friendly. Someone hid little gnome house in one area, and my young nephews enjoyed searching for them and making up stories about them. We came on a Sunday and parking off of braddock/witch hazel was plentiful and the suggested donation is $2 per car.

The best garden in Fairfax county. Visitors center with local artists on display. Cactus garden, veggie garden with goals, children's garden, historic home for weddings or special events, woodlands paths, ponds, nature galore. My favorite place.

The National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum is located in the atrium of the Patent and Trademark Office in Washington D.C. It tells the history of invention and features a collection of memorabilia from some of the most renowned inventors in history, including Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Nikola Tesla.
This is a fun museum, full of interesting information, games and gadgets. With 9-10 years old kids, we spent about 2 hours here and had a lot of fun. The cute souvenir shop is nice as well. And the best part - It is free!

We took our kids to the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum in Alexandria, VA for a homeschool project and it was nothing short of amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the museum is clean, organized, and easy to navigate. The exhibits are interactive and packed with information you won’t find anywhere else. Our children left inspired and full of new ideas perfect for homeschoolers and school field trips. Admission is free, which makes it even better for families and groups. The museum is open Monday–Friday 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month 11 a.m.–3 p.m. (closed Sundays and federal holidays). There’s no on-site lot but plenty of paid parking nearby, including the USPTO East Garage and other garages around John Carlyle Street; we had no trouble finding a space. Use Google Maps to find exact directions and nearby parking options search “National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum” or open it in Maps for turn-by-turn directions and parking details. Plan for about an hour or two to see everything. If you’re bringing a group, call ahead to arrange a tour. We highly recommend this museum to anyone wanting their kids to experience the world of inventors in a hands-on, inspiring way.

This is a small FREE museum at the USPTO building near the Hoffman theater. All about inventions and patents and it was very interesting and inspiring. It is packed with info and we took a group of kids about K to 4th grade. Sometimes the bigger museums can be too much so this was just right. There was a tour and scavenger hunt and it was so great. Definitely call ahead before you go since we arranged our visit and I don’t know how that compares with a walk-in experience 😁

This hall of fame is a little, tiny area of the beautiful US Patent and Trademark Office Building. It is well stocked with some amazing exhibit that could easily be gone through in 30 minutes to an hour. There is some construction as they add on to this wonderful little place.

Very interesting little FREE Museum. It's the hall of Fame, so naturally not all inventions! Well done though. The inductees for year are highlighted in several ways. Evidently they have an annual ceremony for the inductees. It would be fun to see that. The museum is difficult to see from the street but just ask one of the security guards. Little parking. During the weekend there was street parking.

What a hidden gem! We are spoiled by the museum scene here but this one was a delightful surprise. We brought our Girl Scout troop here and they were engaged for ~2 hours. Inspired lots of fun ideas & good questions from our curious future inventors

Beautiful theatre, lovely atmosphere, and comfortable seats. The play was great and funny, the actors and actresses were so good, the building is loved, and the set was imaginative. It was a wonderful night out!!

I was at the little theater of Alexandria last evening to see the play "Lost in Yonkers". The first Act was slow moving for me until the end of the first act. Sometimes, it was hard to hear the youngest member of the cast. I came alive during the second Act of the play, because of the powerful performances of Bella, her mom and younger brother.

I have been getting yearly subscriptions and going to all shows since I moved to Alexandria about three years ago. Love. Love. LOVE. Highly recommend. The shows are great & the volunteers are very friendly and helpful. My favorite DMV theatre, truly!

Have been going to Little Theatre for years. It’s a small venue so every seat is great. They’ve followed Covid protocols in such a good way-they used cardboard cutouts between sets of seats so the theater felt full but no one was sitting next to or right by you. We had “cats” behind us! It’s a comfortable space. The caliber of the performances is terrific. This is community theater and the acting, sets, directing, etc are always very very good. It’s excellent value for dollar. The staff is super helpful. Can’t recommend it enough

The Mount Vernon Trail offers a unique opportunity to explore the historical significance of George Washington's plantation home. Visitors can immerse themselves in the stately mansion, well-maintained grounds, and even pay respects at Washington's final resting place. The estate has been transformed into a museum housing historic documents and possessions from figures associated with the property. Additionally, families can enjoy the expansive four-acre property while learning about George Washington's life with his wife Martha.
Scenic trail. Great for biking/running/walking without worrying about cars and navigation. We started at Old Town Alexandria at Pendleton road and ended crossing Memorial Bridge to the Lincoln Memorial. Stopped at Grovely Park to watch the planes. Total trip about 1 hour.

Scenic trail for biking, running, or walking that connects to many points of interest. Started at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge then biked South thru Belle Haven. Most of the trail ran parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Plenty of parking, picnic areas, views of the Potomac River, and restrooms along the trail. This leg of the Mount Vernon Trail is more of a nature trail rather than an urban trail.
Lakeisha B — Google review
Lovely trail with beautiful views of the harbor.I love the little piers along the way which you can fish off of or just enjoy the view. There's plenty of benches to rest along the trail with a bathroom around the middle of the loop. Most of the trail is paved which makes the trail ideal for those with any type of a handicap.

The trail itself was pretty good. Great for walking and biking. Not wonderful for running as it is concrete. The "view" isn't extraordinary but there are some spots next to the little park area that are nice. Otherwsie, clean, friendly, not overly crowded, and has a few places to park. Parking is only for 3 hours (non paid), so it almost makes you feel rushed to get your run or walk or bike in quickly.
Cole L — Google review
I needed to run an errand to Alexandria on President's Day. I was going to drive until I heard that there was going to be a parade there. If you know Alexandria you know a parade means fun and traffic issues. No way for me. So I decided to ride my bike in. I parked at Gravelly Point just north of National airport and rode down to Alexandria. Once my errand was done I rode farther south. And I was amazed. Alexandria got rid of all the old run down buildings and created a beautiful park and living area along with extending the bike path. It was a beautiful ride. By the time I returned to Gravelly Point I had done about 15 miles, had a great time, got lots of exercise and marveled at the renewal projects! We just moved back to the DelMarVA area eight years ago and while the traffic has gotten amazingly worse project like this along the Mount Vernon Trail make it all worth it!

The African American Heritage Memorial Park boasts a meticulously groomed setting and a wetland area, showcasing memorial sculptures, a historic cemetery, and walking paths. At the heart of the park lies 'Truths That Rise From the Roots Remembered,' an exquisite sculpture group featuring bronze trees. Preserving the original landscape of the 19th-century African American cemetery, this park harmoniously blends with its surroundings while safeguarding diverse plant life.
The bottom levels are very very informative on the history of slavery and black culture. It’s important information, and is really eye-opening to the injustices of slavery. (We did these floors on the same day we did the holocaust… not recommended 😅. Go to the botanic gardens after because you will need some healing after learning about all those atrocities.) We did the top levels the next day- oh.my. GOSH. If you listen to lots of rock n’ roll and old jazz and soul like I do, or if you watch sports like I do, this place is a GOLD MINE. REAL ARTIFACTS. Like you walk in and CHUCK BERRY’S 1972 Cadillac is right there! The Memorabilia here is CRAZY, including Billie Holiday’s dress, Whitney Houston’s dress, Willie May’s jersey, and so much more. So much history and information to take in. There’s so much to see. I absolutely loved those exhibits. I can’t believe I almost forgot… the food is INCREDIBLE. The best fried chicken I’ve ever had,, maybe even the best chicken I’ve ever had in general. There’s a huge selection of great food, I personally loved the fried chicken, sweet potato w/butter, and green beans. It was so good we ate there both days. Would highly recommend this place, 5 stars. Take a couple of days to see everything here.

I was riding through Alexandria looking for something interesting to do when I saw a sign for the Alexandria African American Heritage Park. I have never heard of it, so I stopped. So glad I did! It was a quaint, quiet little Park with beautiful sculptures, grassland, Marsh, and a walking path that crosses a bridge over the marsh. It was very peaceful so I spent my afternoon there walking the lands, reading the remaining headstones from what appears to have been an African American cemetery, and admiring the sculptures.

The Alexandria African American Heritage Park. It started out as a Black Bapist Cemetery which was forgotten, abandoned, and turned into a landfill. It was rediscovered in late 20th Century and it became a memorial site. From what I understand they are still researching who was buried here and many of those who buried here are unknwon.

This one museum had a very significant impact on my view of history. We take so many things for granted, but in this place you get to see how very hard it was for your people to do just basic simple things, like read for free in a public library. The exhibit was beautiful and honest without leaving you in despair. You leave with a renewed desire to make a strong impact with the things we all take for granted. Watch the video, it tells the story beautifully.

My first time at Blackwall did not disappoint. It was highly recommended and everything was wonderful. Visited on a Tues @11:30am to enjoy a quiet lunch outing. Appetizers: calamari and wings. The day's special that was not on the menu was a crab cake, blackened salmon/shrimp on a bed of delicious mash potatoes. Dessert was red velvet cheesecake, a must! Our waitress Ava was very nice, making our visit pleasant.

I would rate this experience a 2 out of 5. We chose to sit outside and waited 20 minutes for our drinks, but the server only brought one. After that, we received our appetizers, which did not came with plates for us to serve ourselves. We enjoyed the appetizers, but then we waited another 20 minutes for our main courses, during which our second drink finally arrived. When the main dishes arrived, we were quite disappointed. They lacked seasoning and were quite bland. While we were pleased with the appetizers, the overall service fell short. Our server seldom checked on us, and we found ourselves without water for a while. Overall, this was by far the worst restaurant experience I've had, and I wouldn’t recommend it. We came based on a friend's recommendation, but unfortunately, I won’t be returning due to the poor service.

My girlfriend and I went here for brunch, and we enjoyed ourselves. Beautiful view ofnthe marina. Great food (if you like oysters or shrimp, this is the place to come to for Sunday brunch. There are other great options as well to choose from if seafood isn't your thing. Excellent Service - Ms. Nicki was our waitress. There was a live band playing jazz or laid back R&B. I even danced. I told my friend that this will be our spot and definitely going back. Heads up to all future patrons please make reservations in advance (I used Open table). Also gratuity is automatically added to your bill. Other than that, eat, drink and enjoy the vibe.

Whether you're looking for a casual meal or hosting a private event, the space accommodates both perfectly. The food was exceptional, with fresh and flavorful seafood standing out. After dinner, we took a peaceful walk along the river, which was the ideal way to end a memorable evening. Christ Church Alexandria, an iconic Episcopal church completed in 1773, holds a significant place in American history. The stunning Georgian architecture and rich heritage make it one of the oldest churches in Virginia. Notable figures like George Washington and George W. Bush have attended services here. The church remains active, offering worship services and community outreach programs while preserving its historical significance for future generations to explore through tours available Monday to Saturday.
The church is super welcoming. The cemetery showed age but was kept clean in memory of the ones that lay to rest there. Overall a good little stop.

I mean the church is beautiful and have lot of history. But the guide tour is pretty short (10 minutes), since the church is pretty small. And here’s no other places you can visit except the gift shop (and the price of the staff in gift shop is pretty expensive). In sum, if you visit Alexandria, you may stop here by ten minutes, it’s really not necessary to drive from other places to here.
Jack L — Google review
Beautiful church with so much history and interesting members from the years! Super sweet and knowledgeable guide that allowed us to sit in the Washington box pew and walked us through the renovation history, presidents that attended as well as the fun tip that Churchill also discovered the battle hymn of the republic here that was then played at his funeral. Neat adjoining cemetery. Nice of the British think that we Americans were almost immortal and gave us so much extra time. (Literally by losing the war and figurately with their tasteful defacing of headstones with their bayonets.)

If you're seeking a unique way to dive into history, look no further than the Tall Ship Providence, an impressive reproduction of the first vessel authorized for service in the Continental Navy under Captain John Paul Jones. This magnificent ship is docked at Old Town Alexandria's waterfront and serves as an open-air museum where visitors can embark on dockside tours or enjoy scenic cruises along the Potomac River. The Providence offers a variety of experiences, including daily cruises and themed excursions that cater to diverse interests.
Ahoy matey! What an enjoyable experience during our Potomac River cruise on the Tall Ship Providence this afternoon! First, there's parking available nearby for about $20/day and just a minute walk from the ship. Restrooms are available on the dock and they were clean. There's a dock bar with plenty of seats as well. The boat has a bar and restroom, although we didn't use either I saw other guests using them so I assumed they're perfectly fine. We had tickets purchased in advance and arrived about 30 minutes before the sail. The crew were fantastic. Polite, professional and provided an educational opportunity within a casual, fun environment while keeping safety a priority. Each member we interacted with was kind and wanted to talk with us, not once did we feel uncomfortable or a burden. Additionally, we enjoyed chatting with other guests throughout the excursion. Phil, who led our historical tours, is amazing. He was full of knowledge and appreciated questions. Phil explained the real ship's history, the replica's journey, the historical crew's days working on board, and many enjoyable facts. We left with a genuine appreciation for the ship. The sail adventure was about 2 hours. At times we felt the motion from another boat's wake however it was never especially choppy. Those who get motion sickness easily may want to take something ahead of time to avoid feeling ill, however I was able to breathe through my sickness without getting too ill. If you're interested in history while seeking a different adventure, definitely check out the Tall Ship Providence! You'll feel safe, learn a lot and have a sincerely pleasant experience. PS: If you enjoyed your adventure don't forget to tip the crew to show appreciation, we happily did via the QR code! Thank you to the Captain and entire crew for such a great adventure on the Potomac!

The pier bar has a floating rock, nice music and a relaxed vibe. Didn’t even tour the ship which is quite small. Totally recommend the bar! Great view of the river as well with the capital in the distance

The ship is beautiful and the trip is funny. But is really not deserve 55$, spend two hours on the river, here’s no enough seats and shade place, explore under the sunshine almost two hours. Is not have many “history” about this ship can share with you, but the crew is super nice and professional, they will let you explore the tail and lower level of the ship. The restroom on the ship is broke, so make sure you use the restroom before you boarding. However, I still not recommend you pay for this if you want a fun, quick tour on the river, maybe water taxi is a better choice.

Oh my! Last Sunday, my family took a ride on Tallship Providence! It was my son‘s sixth birthday and he wanted to do something different. We had such a lovely time! The crew was accommodating and kind and full of information. I would definitely recommend us if you’re down in the old town area and want to try something different. They serve snacks and drinkson the boat. No restrooms provided on board.

Wonderful experience on a tour of this replica of a ship that fought in the Revolutionary War in the 1770s. Friendly crew in a most scenic setting. The bar at the pier is great too. The servers are actually also the tour guides.

The crew was fun and informative. It was interesting to watch them work the lines and sail under wind power. Cruise was about 2 hours on the Potamac. There was a cash bar on the ship, and parking nearby was easy to find. Great experience; would definitely recommend it if you're in the area.

Super fun, my son and I were out for an adventure, I had seen the ship before and thought we’d check it out. Our tour guide Charlie? See photo was amazing. The Captain had a great story for us. The tour was the right length not too long for my 6 year old son but long enough to be a good value. It ends with a video in a very cool room perfect for a hot day. Good value, great history lesson if your on the fence do it.

Wonderful experience sailing on a sunset tour with The Providence on 7/22/2023. Beautiful evening on the Potomac River. Passionate and experienced crew made the sunset cruise a fun adventure. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys history and being on the water in this gorgeous location where it’s easy to spot the Capitol and Washington Monuments from the water. Dining and shopping options are endless and The Providence is conveniently located at the docs close to parking (but arrive early to secure a spot since the lots full up quickly on weekends.) Support The Providence through your patronage and also donations. A great evening that will not disappoint! The people love their ship, and want you to have a memorable time. Lastly, a special thank you to Caroline, the Captain, and entire crew. We will come back soon.

The Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum, established in 1839, offers a comprehensive look into the city's history from Colonial times to the 20th century. It is part of a network of museums and historic sites that collectively narrate Alexandria's story. The museum was founded as a scholarly society by Benjamin Hallowell and also housed facilities for the Alexandria Library Company. Additionally, it played a role in urban archaeology to uncover artifacts preserving the city's heritage.
Great overview of history of Alexandria. The Fresnel lens’ are so cool. The staff and gift shops are bonuses. Really enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend a stop in.
James C — Google review
Small and free museum in a central location of the historical district of Alexandria. The exhibits are okay. The artefacts are not special but the descriptions are of interest. The gift store is excellent and has some wonderful unique items of local interest. Also if you have a Lighthouse Passport you can get the stamp at the gift store desk you just have to ask for it.

This is a gem in Alexandria City! A quaint museum with great information. You need less than an hour to go through the exhibition and gift shop. Highly recommend 🤙

Wonderful space to rent for small concerts and recitals. The piano sounds good and is well maintained. Rental fee is very reasonable. There’s a bit of street noise but nothing that is too distracting.
Chris C — Google review
A regional museum that informs the visitor of Alexandria's complex history. I like the way it tracks the rise of the town until the devastation of the American Civil War, and then the struggle to find relevance then after. The physical development of the town is explained. Special exhibitions are good (March 2019): Alexandria and WW1; and a display of clothing items from the 19th century. The building, respectfully restored, is a fine example of early architecture in the town. Well worth a visit.

Very small, but a great starting point for Alexandria museum tours. Make sure you get the "Key to the City" pass at the visitor center.

The Lyceum is a free museum in Old Towne Alexandria. It contains information of historical people and events of Alexandria. Also, included are artifacts and some furniture of pre and after Civil War years. Cute gift shop. Upper level can be rented for events.

Nestled in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden is a captivating historical gem that transports visitors back to the mid-19th century. Originally built in 1785, this charming wood-frame residence has been home to numerous generations of the prominent Lee family and even served as a refuge for Union soldiers during the Civil War. The house's rich history includes notable figures like labor leader John L.
We had our wedding ceremony in the garden at the Lee-Fendall House and it was perfect! The garden is truly magical in May when we got married and we just had the best experience. Staff was so great to work with and we love the wedding photos from our day. Would recommend to anyone looking for a beautiful outdoor venue.

Although they had an event planned on the same day of our visit they still welcomed us in and gave us an amazing tour. Some things weren't in their original place and the tour was rushed due to the event. However, the place is great and definitely worth a visit

I really enjoyed the tour and seeing some history of Alexandria. Robert E. Lee's boyhood home is just across the street. George Washington and Woodrow Wilson were guests at the Lee-Fendall House. You get to go through time as you tour the different rooms and get a sense of how things changed throughout history. Would definitely recommend. It does cost $5 but I think it's worth it.

The Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial is a poignant tribute to the struggles of those who fought for freedom from slavery. This serene site features a striking statue, 'The Path of Thorns and Roses,' symbolizing the arduous journey toward liberation. Visitors can explore the rich history encapsulated within its grounds, which are part of a broader narrative that includes various cultural landmarks in Alexandria. The cemetery is well-maintained, though some grave markers show signs of nature reclaiming them.
Last year my wife and I were walking the new bridge. We arrived at the Virginia side of it to see this historic monument. To my surprise I saw a man walking his dog in the cemetery. He allowed it to poop there. I asked him if it was okay that I poop on your anscestors graves? He got mad. Virginia allows whites and others to disrespect this monument by allowing their dogs to poop on it.
Onami 2 — Google review
It’s beautiful place and I’m so thankful that something like this preserved for the public to learn about. African-American history is American history and it’s wonderful to honor the slaves and freedmen that built this city and country.
Brittany C — Google review
When the Civil War started and the Union took Alexandria many escaped slaves, called Contraband, poured into the city to escape their former masters. This overcrowding caused a high mortality rate. The soldiers seized a undeveloped plot of land and turned it into a cemetery. More than 1,700 Freedmen and Contrabands were buried here, Of course it was forgotten, built on, and many of the graves were destroyed. Rediscovered in 1996 it is now a monunment, From what I understand about 500 graves still exist and many of the markers on the ground had only 'Grave Of An Adult' on it. BUT the lists of names suggest more knowledge of who was buried. Mostly because many of their descendants were found. Oh, is that crow or a raven?
Michael V — Google review
Very sobering experience. The monument is an excellent tribute. Tickets not necessary.

On a random walk noticed the Freedmans cemetary. It's an amazing piece of history and culture. Very happy that we saw this place. It's small but the history and reflection provided is worth a visit. Nestled in a secluded area, Winkler Botanical Preserve offers over 44 acres of nature trails, a mountain lodge, and a picturesque waterfall surrounded by woods. Managed by a non-profit organization, the preserve aims to provide free environmental education for students and is open daily to visitors. It features indigenous plants and trees from the Potomac River Valley and hosts popular nature camps during summer, spring, and winter breaks.
Great place to spend the afternoon hidden in the concrete jungle as I made my way to the airport. Scenic preserve, with walking paths. Admission is free, parking is limited.
Patty B — Google review
I’m impressed by this botanical preserve which is really close to my house and I never suspected it was there. There are no paved paths. but the trails are in pretty good condition. I was wearing ballet flats and did fine and I saw other people with other kinds of shoes from running shoes to Flip-flops. Spoke to a friendly Tom because I want to possibly bring my relatives here next week and he suggested there are some flatter trails which would be great for older folks. I was able to take a good tour of the park in less than an hour. No actual public restrooms. This is good for a short walk in a beautiful wood. I also saw what appeared to be a summer camp group here.
Cat K — Google review
Great trail in the middle of an urban area. Well maintained lots of bridges creeks and water including a waterfall.
Gary C — Google review
The Preserve has a few things going for it. When I visited the lake, near the lodge, had geese and ducks, and there was a clean picnic area. The main pathways are clean and well maintained. But once you start walking the side trails be careful. Lots of uneven stairs and trails sometimes are not trails. There are still lots to see and nice bridges. Never did find the waterfalls and the lodge was closed. Which I think, if there are restrooms, that's where they are at. Also no trash can. Still a good place to walk, bird watch, read, eat a lunch, and enjoy nature.
Michael V — Google review
You'll pass neighborhood parking and a gate to enter a limited parking area, but the spots are marked and it's easy to navigate. I went on a day with lots of leaves on the ground which was absolutely gorgeous! however, it made it a little difficult to follow the trails. there are enough trail markers and "do not enter" signs to get back on track quickly if you find yourself off path. the lodge made for a lovely view next to the lake with the midmorning sun and blanket of fall leaves. I walk fast and stayed for about 40 minutes. it was a fine morning walk. Looking forward to going back at the heart of each season to see what beauty the preserve has to offer. The path (unpaved) is about a mile and a half and I'd say moderate difficulty due to some areas with incline. Be careful to stay on the path if you have difficulty with uneven terrain (knee issues, etc). on the other hand if you like exploring off path there are a few areas where you can do so.
Max S — Google review
My friend recommended this place and it lived up to the hype. A beautiful walk and easy to follow trail. My dog and I both loved it. Thank you so much to the family who decided to keep this land preserved! 🙏
Bryce K — Google review
In the middle of Alexandria, Virginia is a 44-acre nature preserve, one of the largest piece of undeveloped land. When the Winkler family developed the nearby Mark Center, Catherine Winkler Herman set aside this green space as a gift to the community. Entrance is free. Here's why you should go: 1) Hours: It's open every day (except federal holidays) from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are signs warning guests that the gates close right at 4 p.m. so be sure to get out by then. 2) Space: It's 44 acres so it's big! When you walk in, follow the trail around the pond. Little trails venture out from there. You can hear city sounds on the trails closest to the highway, but other than that, it's a peaceful oasis. When I went on a Thursday afternoon, I saw two other people there and that's it! 3) Lookout: There's a rocky cliff across the pond from the lodge that's perfect for sitting and enjoying the breeze while watching geese swim in the pond. There's a nice waterfall nearby too. A few things to be mindful of: 1) Parking: There isn't any. The apartment complex has reserved parking for guests, but technically it's not for Winkler Nature Preserve visitors. 2) Trails: They are NOT stroller-friendly. The trails aren't hard so kids who can walk are fine, but they are rough and uneven and none are paved. 3) Lodge: The lodge is closes for renovation so there are no public restrooms.
Austin G — Google review
Very lovely trails through a lush wood and gentle creeks. Based on the flora, there will likely be fields of flowers during the Spring. Some notes: 9 standard parking spaces 1 handicap parking space Dogs and bikes are explicitly forbidden as to not disturb the preserve. Gates lock at 4pm daily. The gate may be half open during open times, but you can still drive into park.

We really enjoyed our time visiting this park. There was a nice long walking trail and a place to feed the ducks. I would suggest bring some bread to feed them, they will love that. When we visit a family bought 10 bags of bread to feed them. It is a nice activity for kids and toddlers. There are benches to sit on and we had a picnic there too. Very beautiful views!

A nice medium-sized park with great views of the bay and easy access to many neighborhoods of Alexandria. We enjoyed our time there and noticed that, while it was by no means empty, that it was not nearly as crowded as many of the other options in the area for relaxing outdoors. Lots of Park benches and nice flat areas with trimmed grass for having picnics (which we did). Would go back anytime and my family enjoys it there.

This was an amazing event! Honestly it’s really only worth it if you go ice skating. The lights it’s self takes maybe 10 min to walk through we walked through them twice. Tons of photo opportunities. There’s a shop for kids to get light up toys as well. The skating was a ton of fun especially at night around the lights. Tickets include skate rentals. It is real ice. Was not crowded at all when we went. If you’re not good at skating no problem they have little walkers to push around and little kids can sit and ride them. Staff is very friendly and they watch over the ice for people who fall. I brought my 6 and 9 year old we had a great time

My job held a fun day here. Many of us didn't know there was a water park in the DMV city area. It's not a huge park, but it's large enough to escape the heat. The slides are okay. We did then to get wet...the orange side gave us a welcome surprise. 😀 It is geared towards elementary aged and younger, but as an adult, I was able to have a good time. Not my first choice, but i if we do another fun day...I will be there. I can see business growing with the close of Six Flags over Largo.

When the weather is nice, this is the place I want to be. Living in old town can be a bit noisy but this little park helps me enjoy a bit of nature and it's a quite a treat too! The landscape is so well kept, there are plenty of benches to sit on, many trees that offer shade when it's really hot and sunny out, and the "trail" itself is nice to get your exercise on too. It's kind of a combination of being both a park and a dog park without the actual dog fence in place - I think it would be nice to have an official dog area in place but they do have a dog fountain for dogs to replenish themselves. My boyfriend and I LOVE to picnic at this park and while it does get busy during the nice weather - it doesn't take away the beauty at all. It's a very pleasant and hip area where you will find both families and friends of all ages hanging out - even on summer nights! Old town is charming altogether, but this is one of my favorite places to be for sure.

The Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge is a 4.5-mile paved trail that offers a moderate difficulty level, suitable for biking, walking, and even cross-country skiing in winter. The bridge connects Alexandria, Virginia and Oxon Hill, Maryland over the Potomac River. It was built in 1961 and named after the 28th President of the United States. Along the trail, there are viewing scopes to observe the scenic Potomac River.
What a beautiful scenic ride driving over the Woodrow Wilson Memorial bridge. The bridge seems to be newly renovated no dangerous, cracks or chipped paint. Just a really clean sturdy bridge with a beautiful scenic background to landscape your drive from Virginia to Maryland. Not to mention the traffic flows seamlessly from state to state with five open lanes in each direction. In weekends my fiancé and I like to travel across the Woodrow Wilson memorial bridge to do our shopping and to grab lunch. I’m an outdoorsy type of person so it’s the little things that I enjoy like riding across beautiful bridges and watching nature along the way.. I really wish I was camera ready because there is an awesome silver coin statue of Woodrow Wilson on the Virginia side that is a must see!

It’s a 6 mile walk to and fro from Virginia to the Maryland side and vice versa. I really enjoyed riding on the bridge renting the capital bikeshare bicycle with a friend. It was so much fun! I highly recommend to all tourists and locals as well.
K A — Google review
It’s absolutely surreal at the top of the bridge! The Revolutionary War infographics along the way are a quick but meaningful read, especially with America250 approaching. Overall, this bike ride is STUNNINGLY beautiful—you’ll see it all: the ferry, drawbridge, planes, helicopters, and boats crossing the Potomac. I highly recommend this path!

I love this hike. It was an easy walk with barely any incline. The fews are lovely.

Such a wonderful idea to take that walk finally… The views are beautiful, the trail is trailing lol.

I enjoyed my walk, it was my first time so I got a little over 4 miles in. A lot of beautiful nature views along my long enjoyable stroll.

If you’re looking to get some walking done for exercise. This is definitely it! Free and dedicated parking at the outlets as well.

Church
The Old Presbyterian Meeting House is a historic church in Alexandria, Virginia. Established in 1753, it is one of the oldest churches in the area and a significant part of colonial history. The building currently serves as the headquarters of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
This church is truly special, and we feel incredibly blessed to have been part of this warm and welcoming community since 1995. The fellowship, faith, music and support here are truly inspiring. If you’re looking for a church home that feels like family and nurtures your spiritual growth, we wholeheartedly recommend this congregation. All are welcome!
Maggie J — Google review
If you are a Daughter or Son of the American Revolution (as I am) you will find here the tomb of the unknown revolutionary war soldier and others. What a historic gem!
Diana S — Google review
Established in 1772 the building was Georgian style but was gutted by a fire in 1835 but was rebuilt using the same eighteenth century architectural elements. I came to the Meeting House to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary Soldier. Well kept and lovely churchyard. Lots of history on this plot of land.
Michael V — Google review
Very welcoming congregation in a beautiful and historic church. This church does a tremendous amount for local and distant communities. This mighty group is incredibly active; there’s something for every one to feel connected.
E S — Google review
Wonderful and historic church founded in 1772; a fantastic and welcoming community! Churchyard features the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the revolutionary war, and the grave of George Washington’s personal physician. An architecturally beautiful and inclusive piece of Alexandria history.
Nelson M — Google review
OPMH has a beautiful and historic building (fun fact, it once burned down on a Sunday) but what we love about it is the welcoming community. We especially like the low key 8:30 service, which is a bit more casual, with piano instead of the organ and just us folks singing. The 11 am service is perfect if you're looking for a more traditional service, but we like the informality and warmth of the early one.
Ernest L — Google review
Absolutely stunning music and a very talented music director, although he and his also very talented soprano wife leaving (sigh) for life reasons.. BUT the organ is a good instrument which should provide many more good concerts in the right hands. Also important: this is a congregation that is radically welcoming, genuinely so. A beautiful building, a bit threadbare in spots needing your community support!
Hannah P — Google review
Handel’s Messiah at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House was a delight! Thanks to the artists who sang and played the music and to the talented director Steven Seigart. If you missed it this year plan to be there next year for this new tradition. It stirred my testimony of Jesus Christ and increased my knowledge of Him. My new favorite stanza: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen. (Zechariah 9:9-10) it was a pleasure to hear and see Suzanne Karpov Seigert sing this message of love to all women.

The Friendship Firehouse Museum is a historic firehouse in Alexandria that displays historic firefighting gear dating back to the 1700s. The museum is especially popular with kids, who believe local legend has it that George Washington helped found the volunteer fire company and even paid for its construction.
I had the pleasure of visiting during their recent 250th Anniversary celebration in Old Town Alexandria. I’ve always walked past it and now I finally got a chance to come in. There was a very educational docent discussing the history of the Friendship Firehouse Museum as well as cool artifacts. I didn’t get a chance to go upstairs but I look forward to coming back to explore more. The highlight (for me besides seeing the old fire “truck” inside was that the volunteers were hosting a little kids station in the alley next to it. Kids could hold a small hose to put out fires on a wooden house - a very cool activity if I had small children. One young child was very small indeed that the hose got the best of him and what transpired next was a scene straight out of a Tom & Jerry cartoon where the kid tripped and the hose started flailing about and spraying everyone in line - kids, parents, and bystanders! Kids were laughing, adults were thankful for a cool refresher in the 99 degree weather, and the volunteers jumped into action and took control of the hose. Everyone was laughing so I hope the kid was ok and that memory will stick with me for awhile of the Friendship Firehouse. Hopefully their next big anniversary is just as fun!

I stopped by the museum during a weekend trip to Alexandria. Unfortunately, it was while they were closed for some renovations. However, I did enjoy seeing the historic station from the exterior and reading the interpretive signs. It's a great, and unique, historic site. I hope to return once they are finished with renovations and reopen.
Zachary H — Google review
Small museum open once a month. Alexandria residents can enter freely otherwise they ask for a couple of dollars. Two floors, lots of interesting items and lots of information. Tiny gift shop and a public restroom.
Michael V — Google review
A pleasant little museum with some cool artifacts from the history of the place as a firehouse and general civic organization. It takes about 10 minutes to go through everything, so the collection is small, though it is unique as well. I'd give them another star if they were ever actually open. I just happened to catch them during a festival, or I still wouldn't have seen them despite living in the neighborhood for months.
Julie H — Google review
This museum is not open every Saturday like Google Maps says. It's only open one Saturday every month. Their website lists specific opening dates. Inside the museum there are two pieces of fire fighting apparatus and a few other tools. The volunteer guide has limited knowledge but could pass your question to a local historian if needed.

Just went to day for 5th time great place to visit. Visting time now sat and sun 1 to 5:30pm become c19. Hope they be able to open more offen soon as weather getting nicer this a good place to go to learn some good history and to see lot nice things. The hose transport was just returned after 2 years of being refurbished. An amazing skill set by a true trade craftsman. Check out the hand pump before it starts to get refurbished by the same craftsman.

Quaint, little museum. A quick fun experience. The gentlemen working there are friendly ;) and ready to answer your questions. If you're in Old Town stop by! Your "entrance fee" (a couple of bucks for 7.of us) and gift shop purchases help keep all the museums in Old Town running and preserved! We ❤️ Old Town!

Windmill Hill Park, also known as Lee Street Park, is a charming city park located in Alexandria, VA. It offers various amenities such as athletic courts, a playground with slides, tunnels, monkey bars and swings, a dog area and scenic riverfront vistas. While the park may lack open shade for family photographers during the day, it is an ideal location for early morning family photo sessions with historic townhouses providing a classic backdrop. The park also features benches for families to relax.
Got to watch a team from Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery planting mussels in the Potomac River.

This park is beautiful. They have a play area for the little ones and a basketball court. It's a nice place to visit with family and friends. You can walk your dog or just simply go for a stroll. The view of the Potomac River is soothing to watch. I would truly love to visit this park again.

Located on a hill overlooking the Potomac River is a large public park with a semi-shaded, two-level playground, open grass, benches, and a sand volleyball court. There aren’t restrooms or a parking lot, but most walk to the park or park on the nearby streets.

I took my granddaughter there to play, when I was visiting. It is a nice park, with two playgrounds and a great view. Both the property, as well as the equipment on both playgrounds, is well maintained and it is clean.

Nestled in Alexandria, the Jerome "Buddie" Ford Nature Center is a haven for nature enthusiasts. It houses an array of live animals, captivating exhibits, and a delightful ambiance that appeals to children. Adjacent to the center lies the Dora Kelley Nature Park, spanning 50 acres and featuring a scenic mile-long trail through woodlands, streams, and marshes.
Such a fun center, so many live animals and things to touch and microscopes to use. Tons of books, play area for littles, a nature center down below, and awesome staff. Not sure how it is when crowded, excited to check out some programs.

There are some live reptile exhibitions, or touch /observe stations, a reading and play areas, even a video station for taking quizzes. I like the natural painting the best, beautiful. However, I like some other nature centers better, for more interesting presentations.
Serena L — Google review
We recently celebrated our son's birthday at the Jerome Buddie Ford Nature Center, and I have Arianna to thank for making it absolutely AMAZING! While we had a great time hosting his party there a few years ago, this year's experience was truly next level--Arianna knocked it out of the park! Here's why: Great with Kids - Six-year-olds are loud, energetic, and full of excitement, and Arianna handled them like a pro. She kept them engaged and focused while teaching them about creepy crawlers, all without ever losing patience. Even when the kids started running around, she rolled with it and skillfully brought them back to learning and having fun. Super Helpful - We forgot an important item for the party, and Arianna immediately stepped in to help, saving us from having to run out. Knowledgeable & Passionate - Her enthusiasm for nature and wildlife was contagious! She shared fun and interesting facts in a way that captivated both the kids and adults. Proactive - As soon as we arrived, Arianna offered to help and popped into the party room while we were setting up to check in and see if we needed anything. Her attentiveness and initiative made the day run so smoothly! Additional Context: We were actually able to entice our son to attend Nannie J. Lee Center last summer camp because we thought Arianna and her reptiles would be there. We were so bummed to find out she wasn't! So you can imagine our excitement when we ran into her at Jerome Buddie Ford and realized she was going to be at our son's birthday party, teaching the kids all about insects and nature! Arianna is a gem, and I hope to see her continue to crush it at Jerome Buddie Ford Nature Center. She made our son's birthday truly special, and we are so grateful!

My granddaughter loves this place! She goes there at least once a week! The staff is wonderful! They are kind, patient and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend taking any children here! There is no cost. But a wealth of information to be learned.
Kat O — Google review
Definitely one of my favorite nature centers in the area just because the staff is so knowledgeable and clearly excited to be there. We visited for "meet and greet" and got to pet a turtle. The facility is spacious and they even have a small kids corner with toys and books. It doesn't have an outdoor playground like some other centers, but we usually save indoor adventures for rainy days anyway so that doesn't matter to us. Parking is ample and free. Restrooms available. Wheelchair accessible.
Victoria T — Google review
This is a hidden gem! Great for young children and completely free! They have lots of reptiles for the kids to see and staff will even take some out for them to touch! They have story hour and meet an animal at 11 daily when they’re open and it was lovely. They have a library to spend time in as well. Bathrooms were clean and plentiful. The adjacent trails along the river are great too. My kids loved it.

If you're on the hunt for stylish nautical-themed apparel, The Lucky Knot is a must-visit destination. With locations in Alexandria, Leesburg, Annapolis, and Baltimore, this charming shop offers an impressive array of preppy clothing from beloved brands like Vineyard Vines and Lilly Pulitzer. You'll find everything from classic stripes to vibrant patterns that embody coastal chic. Beyond clothing, The Lucky Knot also features a delightful selection of accessories at reasonable prices.
The Lucky Knot in Old Town Alexandria is such a fun boutique to visit. I absolutely love the nautical and coastal vibes throughout the store—it’s like stepping into a New England summer. Their dresses and tops are so cute, especially the ones with anchors and bold stripes. I found a couple of great pieces that are perfect for warm-weather outings. The shop itself is beautifully organized and inviting. It’s a great place to pick up something unique for a beach trip or just to add a pop of color to your wardrobe. Staff were warm and welcoming, offering help without being pushy. If you're into preppy, seaside-inspired fashion, this place is definitely worth checking out!

The store has a great vibe, and the selection is top-notch everything from laid back preppy to polished and timeless looks. The staff was super friendly and welcoming, and they really know their inventory. It’s one of those places you walk into and immediately find something you didn’t know you needed. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in Old Town!

Had a fabulous day shopping for my Mother of the Bride dress at The Lucky Knot in Old Town! Huge selection, more reasonably priced than I expected and we had a great time with our dressing assistant Krista, as well as Emily and all the women downstairs. Highly recommend them, nice products but an even nicer staff.

I came here looking for some new swim trunks and golf tees for my son. I was pleasantly surprised that they carried several quality brands and options. On the women’s side, my wife was able to find a couple summer dresses, perfect for date nights or just a stroll around town. Superb location, friendly staff, and very welcoming selection. Will definitely be returning to get some more gear !!!

The Lucky Knot feels like a little slice of the East Coast tucked into Old Town Alexandria. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted with vibrant colors, classic coastal styles, and the kind of charm that makes you want to update your whole wardrobe. It’s not just about clothes it’s about finding pieces that make you feel effortlessly put together. The staff has a great eye and helped me discover styles I wouldn’t have picked on my own but ended up loving. If you’re into timeless looks with a fun, preppy twist, this place is a must visit.

Was exploring Old Town Alexandria with my husband after a long day of traveling. I saw this store and thought I would find some things I wanted to buy in there, so we went in. Immediately upon entering, we were greeted by two stuck up snobby young employees who did shockingly say "Welcome in" but followed it with looking at each other, laughing, and going on to say to each other how "this is a classy store." I immediately was ticked off because it seemed very much like they were implying that towards me, who was wearing comfortable clothing (t shirt and shorts) after being in a car all day! Of course I'm not going to be wearing a dress or a blouse and slacks when I'm going to be in a car for 8 hours! I was going to buy something in there, there were plenty of things I wanted to purchase, but I felt like I was being judged the whole time I was in there and decided I didn't want to support a business that makes their customers feel judged as soon as they enter the store so I left. For a store in a town that gets customers from various places, they are not welcoming to anyone who clearly isn't from this town

Nestled near Fort Hunt Park, Grist Mill Park is a delightful destination for families and dog lovers alike. This charming park features a sprawling playground perfect for toddlers, alongside expansive open fields ideal for picnics or playtime. While the playground equipment is generally in good condition, some areas show signs of wear that parents should monitor closely. The park also boasts well-maintained sports fields, although they require reservations for use.
I am not writing this review to recommend the things praised in other reviews, I am giving it this score because of the community garden that is in the park. I have been gardening here for the past three years and look forward to many more. During the main growing season, representatives from the County’s master gardener program are there on certain Saturdays to help answer any gathering questions you may have. Other gardeners who tend plots are also very helpful and are willing to lend a hand or a tool if you need something special.

This was the Smaller museum near the national mall Gave it four stars because seventy percent of The museum was closed for changing/renovate. Lots of DEI hires.. welcome to DC! Visited in late October wasn't too crazy.Busy tons of food trucks out front selling overpriced ice cream.. food vendors in trucks likely not American citizens fyi

Great Little park for a Saturday afternoon with toddlers. The equipment is in good shape, except for a couple of stairs to show their wear with rust coming through thus making sharp little edges that might be dangerous for a kid if they fall, but that would probably rarely happen. The football field and baseball field are both well maintained, however not accessible to just folks coming into the park to use; one probably have to reserve them. There is a basketball court and a soccer field and they’re both decent and opened. My only misgiving is that the basketball court has got a bigger grade than necessary; guess to avoid puddles.

Note: this review is only for the dog park Grist Mill dog park is hit or miss for us. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes people aren't good about keeping an eye on their dogs. Pros: The park itself is huge, with lots of room for dogs to run. There are lots of trees for shade, and benches and picnic tables for people to sit at. There's tons of parking, but you'll have to walk a little ways up the trail to access the dog park. Cons: The stone dust surface can get pretty dusty if there hasn't been any rain, and will hold puddles of questionable liquids if it has. There are kiddie pools there, which some people enjoy for their dogs, but that breed mosquitoes and add to a gross muddy situation around the water pump. Not an issue in winter, but definite an issue in the summer.

Playground
Chessie's Big Backyard, located in the Lee District Family Recreation Area in Alexandria, Virginia, offers a nature-themed playground with tree and stump features that make kids feel like they're climbing treetops. The park also has a section for smaller children with a lighthouse and pirate ship. Visitors can explore Chessie's Trail to observe local wildlife and enjoy sensory features around the park. Additionally, there is a free splash pad on-site, but it tends to be crowded.
This is a great park that incorporates hours of playtime at the playground. You can break away for a short nature walk that is fun and exciting for the kids. There’s an amphitheater which our kids enjoyed running in and out of . Our latest visit was for a birthday, and the space was just enough and reasonably priced to entertain a dozen kids.
Tamara H — Google review
Very nice park that is clean and well maintained. There were shaded areas and it has ramps for those in wheelchairs can enjoy it too. They also provided wheelchairs for the splash pad. However, like us and many others, we arrived today covered in sunscreen, rash guard shirts and swim suits to enjoy the splash pad and it was closed! Should have put a sign up in front about this and updated the hours in google. Lost a star for that - hard to find accurate hours for the splash pad here.
Lisa M — Google review
Wonderful playground with a cute nature walk that my two children enjoyed (beware of poison ivy which is near the edges). Currently, the "dragon" section of Chessie's is closed, which is a bummer. Fyi the playground is open at normal time for a park (i.e. early), 11 am is the opening for the splash park.
Tressa S — Google review
My kid really enjoys the splash pad at this park, but beware sometimes the line to get in can be outrageous and they won't let your kid play if they aren't wearing sandals with straps. It's also a great spot for a birthday party especially if you get the treehouse area with all that shade. Lot's of picnic areas, a merry-go-round and play ground
Jennifer S — Google review
The splash park is wonderful. In July/August, we showed up at 11am (when they opened) and didn’t see any waiting line for several hours. I think the long wait only happens early in the season. The splash pad has a lot for varied ages, so bring your toddler but be aware of running older kids and slips. The playground is really great. It’s well maintained and creatively designed, so it’s not just your neighborhood slide and swing. In the summer, the local camps do take kids here and usually don’t pay much attention to them. I found it hard to let my 2 year old on even the toddler side because of the rambunctious older kids. If you go earlier (before 10) it’s way less crowded. Overall a really great free summer kids activity. Well go back!
Casey — Google review
Nice playground for mix ages, covered picnic tables for parties, small carousel, and splashpad. The splashpad and playground are free, but splashpad has a max capacity of 240. No consumables other than water inside the splashpad and it will fill up pretty quickly so I suggest going at opening time at 11am for weekdays. My biggest issue with this area is that it often has a lot of trash lying about which is too bad as there are trashcans, but people just can't seem to make it over to them.
Lexxs H — Google review
Pretty neat playground. There is a mist park right beside the playground and a carousel as well. The mist park and carousel can be used for a few.
CheF4phantom — Google review
This park is so fun! There is a very nice playground with different slides and things to climb on. During the summer there is a free splash pad for kids to play at. We love the nature walk beside the playground with fun musical instruments for the kids to play along the way. It's well maintained and a fun place to play.
