Place Moulay Hassan is a vibrant and picturesque urban square located in Essaouira, offering a strategic location between the Medina and the port. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture, enjoy scenic views of the ocean, and feel the delightful sea breeze while indulging in gastronomic experiences at numerous dining spots. The square is known for its collision of desert ruggedness with military grandeur, creating a captivating spectacle especially at dusk.
The Fort is well worth a visit and is worth 50dm entrance fee for adults just underc£4 or €4 as the views from there are amazing The fishing port with the fish market is worth the visit to see. The main squire as plenty going on also with plenty of places to get something to eat

Walking through the vibrant streets of Essaouira's Medina was like stepping back in time. The whitewashed walls, blue-painted doors, and narrow alleyways create a captivating atmosphere that blends history with artistic flair. Local artisans display their handmade crafts and paintings, giving the area a unique bohemian vibe. The bustling markets are full of life, with vendors selling colorful textiles, intricate pottery, and fresh produce. The coastal breeze and the scent of spices make wandering through the maze-like alleys a sensory delight. Don't miss the chance to visit the iconic ramparts, which offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Essaouira is a perfect blend of culture, history, and creativity – a must-visit for those seeking an authentic Moroccan experience.

This is the true heart of Essaouira, a place that never sleeps. There's always something happening here; it's full of people, music, and scents. This isn't a monument you just look at – it's a place that you truly experience. From one side of the square, you enter the narrow streets of the medina, and from the other, you can smell the ocean and see the port. You can sit in one of the many cafés, order a mint tea, and just watch the scene for hours. You'll see vendors, fishermen returning from their catch, and tourists from all over the world wandering about. It has a great, lively atmosphere. It's the essence of the city in one spot. You absolutely have to sit there for a while and soak in the vibe.
Rob K — Google review
In the evening, Essaouira's medina transforms into a lively tapestry of sights and sounds. The whitewashed walls and blue shutters glow under the setting sun, casting a serene ambiance. Street performers fill the air with music, while the scent of grilled seafood from the bustling port mingles with the salty breeze. Locals and visitors alike stroll along the ramparts, enjoying panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean as the sky transitions from golden to twilight hues. The city's vibrant nightlife emerges, offering cozy cafés, rooftop bars, and intimate music venues, making Essaouira a captivating destination after dark.
Abdelkabir B — Google review
Great open space next to the port and medina with multiple uses depending on the time of day and season. A centre for arts and crafts and recreation, and to just sit on the wall and watch the world go by.
Kevin C — Google review
Moulay Hassan Square is the beating heart of Essaouira. It's not just a square, but an open theater that combines the fragrance of history with the beauty of the present. Here, you can feel the true spirit of the city, as the sound of the waves coming from the nearby port harmonizes with the melodies of Gnaoua music playing throughout the square. Adorned with towering palm trees and old-fashioned cafés, the square is open to visitors and residents alike, serving as a meeting point for dreamers and artists. During the day, it bustles with activity, while at night, it transforms into a magical place illuminated by dim lights, a tranquil haven for contemplation and watching life flow peacefully. It is truly a unique work of art that captures the enchanting spirit of Essaouira.
Omar F — Google review
Great place. A lot of things happen here throughout the day. From small bands playing, to big concerts. There are many gift shops, antique shops, cafes around. Definitely worth a visit. I'm not sure if this happens often but on the days I was at this place there was a music festival going on and I had the chance to attend the concerts for free, they were kind of a public event I believe, I didn't see anyone buying tickets anywhere, it was super fun, the concerts only happened at night. In the morning the place is tidied and less crowded.
Eternal M — Google review
Nice big open space with charming venders who will try to sell you fake branded sunglasses and "happy cakes". Next to it is a rocky beach ideal for watching the sunset and eating fleshly barbecued seafood and of course the seafood market

Sqala du Port d'Essaouira is a historic port that offers visitors a glimpse into the city's past as a bustling fish port. Tourists can stroll along the old city walls, admire the iconic blue boats, and take in views of the Atlantic coast while exploring the stalls showcasing the day's catch. The honey-colored ramparts of Sqala du Port are a major attraction and have even served as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
Beautiful historic place, the architecture, the local life, the people — all worthy of a visit. For those who like taking photos, you’ll find plenty of memorable spots :)
Magdalena R — Google review
The view was stunning, and I really appreciated the charm of the walls and the overall atmosphere. However, there’s still room for improvement—especially when it comes to enhancing the experience for tourists.
Abdo D — Google review
It's otherworldly and unspoilt, and feels like standing on a film set. In fact, the film The Lonely Planet with Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth was filmed here and, most famously, Game of Thtones. There is a strong breeze coming off the sea but it's refreshing in the heat. Research the history of Essaouira and you will find that you are standing on land with a rich and exciting history. Now a UNESCO heritage sight, it is really worth a visit.
Caron N — Google review
We got a tip from the manager at the hotel where we stayed in Marrakesh to buy fresh fish here at the harbor in Essaouira and have it grilled on the spot so you can eat it right away. We did that, and it was super tasty. Not a fancy, luxurious setting, but it was amazing to watch the fresh fish being grilled right there and then enjoy it with a small salad on the side. Definitely recommended. Essaouira is a cozy fishing and harbour town with lots of small shops, a lively atmosphere and that warm vibe that makes you want to wander around for hours.

Discover the timeless charm of Sqala Kasbah in Essaouira — an 18th-century fortress standing proudly on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Once built to protect the city, today it invites travelers to wander its historic walls, admire the stunning sea views, and feel the spirit of Morocco’s past. A UNESCO World Heritage treasure, Essaouira is truly one of Morocco’s most enchanting cities — a place where history, culture, and beauty meet. Don’t miss the chance to experience it!

Local history museum
Historical landmark
Bayt Dakira, also known as the House of Memory, is a museum located in Essaouira's Jewish quarter or Mellah. It serves as a cultural space dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Moroccan Jewish community. The building houses ancient artifacts, texts, and rare photographs and aims to symbolize religious harmony and coexistence. Visitors can explore a temple, library, art exhibitions, and cultural residence for researchers while viewing Jewish cultural objects such as traditional clothing and audiovisual recordings.
A very quiet place to spend your last day. The interior design is rich and the collections were great pieces of the Jewish community. It would be more helpful if there are English translations as well. I hope there will be more support to these projects of reviving the jewish culture in Morocco. Also, entrance fee is free!
Marie C — Google review
Very well kept museum about the history of the Jewish community in the area. A beautiful building filled with lots of photos, information and some videos. On the second floor there's also a library and wifi is available. The door is closed so you have to wait for the security guard to let you in/out. The informational signs don't include English translations but I just used the photo feature of Google translator.
Olivia S — Google review
A valuable historical resource on the role the Jewish community played in Morocco. The story of their contributions to the country and the impact is a timely reminder of the role Jews played in the region. The museum is well kept and impressive.

Bayt Dakira or the House of Memory is a Jewish museum from the 18th century located in the Jewish quarter "Mellah" of Essaouira's old medina in Morocco. The museum seeks also to show the coexistence between Muslims and Jews in the city. Visitors are greeted by the expression "Shalom Aleykoum, Salam Lekoulam" which is a mix of Arabic and Hebrew to illustrate the friendship between Jews and Muslims.[
Mark S — Google review
Beautifully unkept museum where you can learn the local history of Jewish presence in Essaouira. A testimonial to the openness and diversity of cultures living harmoniously in this area of the world.
Magdalena R — Google review
They museum is small, in 20 min you can see everything but they issue that everything is in French or Arabic. No entrance fee. They used to live together in peace, what happen?

I had such a pleasure on my visit, and felt very lucky to have been guided through the center by a very knowledgeable, passionate, and friendly guide. He was a huge part of what made the whole experience so enjoyable and meaningful. This place in itself is very powerful, and they pay respect to a rich history of Essaouira's Jewry. Bravo! 🙏🏽

Plage d'Essaouira is a wide sandy beach located next to a historic port, offering breezy conditions that attract surfers and kite-boarders. The area is rich in history, with the ruins of an ancient Portuguese fortress and ties to Carthaginian and Phoenician civilizations. Visitors can enjoy the golden sands, turquoise waters, and numerous beachside cafes and restaurants for relaxation.
Gets windy but it’s a beautiful clean beach. Lighted up at night too. Many activities such as camel rides, horseback rides, surfing and more.
Hussain A — Google review
Amazing beach especially during the sunset time, you can ride, quads, camels and horses also learn to surf as there are many people who provide these services. Get healthy juice on the way and there are good restaurants nearby. The only inconvenience there are the dogs, some of them aren’t friendly and the province should do something about it.
Noura ( — Google review
Windy & nice beach. Very very busy in Aug. You can get cheap beds and use them all day long just be aware there are some charges for toilets. The showers on the beach were great however it seems only certain tourists were being charged to use - one to be aware of. Waves big, lots of fun.
Millie H — Google review
Very wide beach with great views of crashing sea waves along the rocky beach. There are also sandy stretches for beach goers to enjoy a pleasant picnic or stroll along the beach. The castle is especially noted for the scene in Game of Thrones, so it is a popular tourist photo spot. Plenty of seagulls winging their way through the breezy wind. Locals and tourists can enjoy the seafood at stalls near the beach.
Avril A — Google review
Large, beautiful beach with few people on it. You have to walk inside the sea a lot to swim as the slop is very gentle. Be careful of the tide. It can come fast and wet your belongings if you're not careful.
Alexandru I — Google review

This museum has been closed for over two years. I am sure it will reopen in the future as Essaouira boasts a very rich history. There are so many plans in the offing that will make this unique town even more attractive destination to national and international visitors. 🤞🤞🤞

Essaouira's City Walls, built in the late 18th century to protect the medina from invasion, have become a symbol of the city's rich history and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walls also feature the Portuguese Fortress and Scala de la Kasbah, both remnants of Essaouira's past as a major seaport. While the city boasts a pristine beach, its strong Atlantic winds make it more suitable for wind surfing than swimming.
Amazing view with the ocean and the sunset! However, you have to find a spot and climb the walls while the place gets crowded. Try getting there earlier than sunset. Note: they don't let people stay on the walls after sunset.

Marine — Google review
The Remparts and City Walls of Essaouira, also known as Mogador, are among the most iconic features of this Atlantic port city. Built in the 18th century under Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, the fortifications were designed by European military engineers to protect the harbor and town from naval attacks. Their design reflects a unique blend of Moroccan tradition and European military architecture. Stretching along the seafront, the walls are punctuated by bastions and lookout towers, offering sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Cannons, still lined along parts of the ramparts, recall the city’s strategic importance as a trading hub and maritime stronghold. The ramparts also provide some of the best vantage points in Essaouira. From here, one can admire the crashing waves, the whitewashed medina, and the fishing boats returning to port. The combination of sea breeze, ocean spray, and historic stonework creates a truly atmospheric experience that draws both history lovers and photographers. Visitors often describe the Remparts as both impressive and tranquil, embodying the spirit of Essaouira itself: a city of defense and openness, of strength and beauty. Exploring the walls is not only a journey into history but also a chance to connect with the timeless rhythm of sea and stone.

Unfortunately, our experience with the surf course and accommodation was very disappointing. Communication on site was almost impossible due to the lack of English skills. We were not informed in advance that payment had to be made in cash upon arrival. We were also told that we could only see the accommodation after paying, which became understandable once we saw the poor condition of the place. The accommodation did not match the photos shown online: • Dirty bed sheets • Floor was not cleaned, spider webs everywhere, mold in the bathroom • No trash bin • Towels were dirty and torn • Unstable furniture • The shower had no curtain or cabin, so the entire room got wet; the water drain did not work properly • Breakfast only included tea/coffee, white bread, and two eggs The surf course was equally disappointing. Even though our group was small, we received very few useful tips. The instructor kept asking us what we thought we were doing wrong instead of giving corrections or advice. For about one-third of the session, the instructor was not even in the water. What was especially unpleasant was that we were pressured to leave a 5-star Google review. After we changed it to an honest 1-star review, several staff members from both the surf course and the accommodation repeatedly asked us to delete or change it back. Overall, we cannot recommend this place.

I spent several days learning kitesurfing as a complement to my wing practice, and this school truly exceeded my expectations. The welcome was warm and friendly, and you can really feel the Moroccan sunshine in the spirit of the team — passion, good vibes, and genuine kindness. The atmosphere is relaxed, yet the lessons are taught with professionalism and great attention to detail, which makes all the difference. They offer different training options to fit your pace and goals, and the instructors are passionate and deeply committed to helping every student progress. A special thanks to Mehdi, my instructor, for his clear explanations, precision, and focus on safety and understanding. His dedication and rigor helped me progress very quickly while having so much fun on the water. I highly recommend Loving Surf to anyone who wants to learn or improve in an authentic, sunny, and professional atmosphere.

Spent a week here for surfing lessons and can't say enough great things! My instructor, Ilyass, was super patient, knowledgeable and very encouraging. I started the week struggling just to stand up - but by the end he had me doing turns and ready to take on bigger waves. And the confidence to keep working on things on my own. The whole team at Loving Surf helped make my stay here in Essaouira so great! They helped coordinate the entire trip for me including transportation and my lodging. So wonderful and made it so easy. And everyone was so friendly and helpful. Also, I really appreciated the small lesson sizes. I never had more than 3 people in my lessons - but I saw so many other groups out there that had so many more people - so many they had to put matching shirts over their wetsuits to keep track of everyone. It's so much easier to learn in smaller group sizes where the instructor can pay more attention to each student!

I had a very good time at Loving and I highly recommand to take kitesurf classes at this place. The people there are very welcoming and I managed to do the waterstart and to ride on the water thanks to clear directions of my instructor. Thank you so much for the lovely few days I had there. I definitely will come back soon. Ps: they serve great coffee too!

Our family of four (2 children aged 9 and 13) had an excellent instructor (Mehdi) that successfully taught us all to stand up on our board by the first day! By our third and final lesson, we all had the surfing bug and want to continue to surf on other holidays. We would recommend this surf school and they also helped us connect with a fantastic taxi/transfer company that was the cheapest we found in Morocco.

Tucked away in one of the bustling medina's main streets, Restaurant Café Des Arts offers a unique and somewhat undiscovered experience. The Moroccan café serves traditional mint teas, tagines, and couscous dishes but what sets it apart is the impromptu musical performances by the owners. Visitors can enjoy live music while savoring delicious tagine in a cozy and lively atmosphere.
Beautiful atmosphere with candle lit tables and live musician singing and playing guitar. Lovely decor and the terrace was nice. Delicious food - we had the spaghetti and the couscous and also tried the selection of “patisserie morocaine”

Lovely, intimate and unique atmosphere. A rooftop that looks over the Main Street. Delicious food, great service and live Gnaoua music. Will definitely come back !

We paid more than necessary. The food isn't really good. The dessert tasted like it was bought ready-made from the supermarket. The soup was without spices. We got the Dinner not the same time, with 15 Minute distance. The Service wasn't really friendly. Can not recommend!
Anna M — Google review
Small intimate restaurant. Food is decent and prices are good. Service was not the best, a good 30 minutes between the first person getting their meal to the last in our small group of 7. There is live music. Seats are not comfortable.

I loved the vibe! I had such a great time with them 🤍
Hanan N — Google review
If you are curious about Moroccan music and like Moroccan food—or seek a cozy but lively atmosphere—go straight to Restaurant Café Des Arts and hear their live music and eat their delicious tagine. If you’re like me, you’ll spend a couple of hours there. (We went in the evening; I’m not sure if they have music in the daytime.). I spent a week in Morocco (Marakesh, Essaouira, El Jadid, and Casablanca) in late December, and the evening spent at Restaurant Café Des Arts was the highlight of my entire trip !!! That’s why I’m taking the time to write this review. We started on the rooftop (because it has a view) but immediately descended one flight to the room where one musician was singing and playing gimbri (plucked string instrument) while another guy sang and played percussion—but surprisingly he was the same guy who took our food order just moments before. That’s how it is at Café Des Arts: Presumably a family-runned business, at any moment another of the food wait staff joins in, singing and playing hand drums or another percussion instrument, each one a competent musician in his own right. At one point there were four musicians playing and singing together; while at other times it’s only one (while others serve food). This is a marvelous one-of-a-kind place. Even the cook sometimes takes a break and sits down next to you to enjoy the music. And the food ! Oh my, this was the tastiest tagine I had in my entire trip, and the portion was huge. I also had an eggplant salad that I enjoyed. Don’t miss the opportunity to go to Restaurant Café Des Arts while in Essaouira.

Great little spot with a cool vibe. Stopped in for a quick lunch, reasonable prices and decent portions. Berber omelette was really good. The stairs to the top terrace are basically a spiral ladder, which is always good fun. You may struggle if your..erm..portions are also generous.

everthing was very very good. we liked the zalouk and the vegetarian tajine. It was a little bit too salty, but the ambience and the staff was sweet so it did balanced it out. We are also happy that it is opened during the festive season - Thank you! Greetings from Switzerland.

Beautiful gallery with tons of interesting artworks. Nice patio too. We ended up buying a painting by Essaouiran artist Erraad. Very friendly and professional service from Zak. He helped us pack the painting efficiently for our return flight. Even if you have no intention to buy anything, go visit! The gallery has amazing pieces to admire and learn more about Morocco and Africa in general.

A wonderful commercial gallery exhibiting local artists and some who fell in love with the country and were inspired by it. It’s free to visit and is located in a beautiful piece of architecture, with a patio and also a terrace with the city’s view. The artworks are truly worth to be seen. I didn’t buy anything because I didn’t have enough time to explore all of them but will definitely go back. Zaccaria welcomed us and explained many things which enhanced our visit. Thank you!

Amazing and quiet place in the middle of Essaouira showing art from local artists. The people inside are very kind and let you browse the art by yourself but are there to help you if you have questions. Beautiful pieces from home decor to paintings to furniture, rugs and doors. Historical landmark
Borj El Barmil, located near landmarks like the Castelo Real of Mogador and the Essaouira Ramparts, is a historical site with over a dozen Portuguese cannons pointed towards the sea. It's also known as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Visitors can walk around the port to experience its bustling past and take in views of blue boats on the Atlantic coast. The area offers great views of the fish market below and provides insight into local fishing practices.
A historical place, with an amazing tower, you can walk on top, beautiful view of Atlantic Ocean. Getting ticket was easy , 60 Dirham per person. Definitely worth it to go and visit it.

Borj El Barmil: A Charming Historical Landmark Worth Visiting! I really enjoyed visiting Borj El Barmil. It's an impressive historical landmark featuring unique architecture and stunning views of the sea and the city of Essaouira. Wandering through the tower takes you on a journey through time, and you can feel the grandeur of the history it holds within its walls. The location is excellent, situated on the waterfront, making it a major attraction in the city. The views from the top are wonderful and worth capturing in photos. I highly recommend visiting Borj El Barmil to anyone visiting Essaouira, as it combines history and natural beauty in one place.
El H — Google review
The view looks good from outside. I didn't go inside the fort due to the entrance fee and didn't feel like it will be a better view inside
Chandra R — Google review
This is the second half of the tower at the port and is a circular cannon defence, and all part of the entry fee to the Squala / tower. Great views over the fish market below. Unlike a sanitised supermarket fish counter this is a working port brining fish for local consumption, these are the ones you see on sale and the rest go straight to the freezers and cold storage for shipping. This is great spot to watch the ebb and flow in the market as people buy fish, get them cleaned by the guys who do just that for a living, and then get them grilled round the corner. It also gives a great view over the islands too.

🇲🇦 🇲🇦 🇲🇦 (Borj Al-Barmil) in Essaouira: Borj Al-Barmil (The Barrel Tower) in Essaouira Borj Al-Barmil, also known as the Circular Bastion or the Northern Bastion, is a prominent historical landmark in the Moroccan city of Essaouira. It's an integral part of the ramparts of Scala du Port (or Skala du Marsa). * Construction and Purpose: Borj Al-Barmil was built during the 18th century as a crucial part of Essaouira's defensive fortifications. Its primary purpose was to protect the port from potential naval attacks, house soldiers and ammunition, and store water supplies. * Location and Design: The tower occupies the northwestern corner of the city, overlooking the sea, and is distinguished by its prominent circular shape extending into the water. It measures approximately 25 meters in diameter and stands 6.20 meters high, topped with a series of stone merlons. The tower comprises two levels: a lower floor that served as a water reservoir and an upper floor containing a hall. * Defensive Significance: The tower was equipped with large cannons, some dating back to the 18th century, for port defense. These cannons were designed to fire projectiles over long distances, highlighting the tower's importance as part of the coastal defense system. * Naming: The tower historically bore two names: the first, the "Northern Bastion" or "Northern Tower," as mentioned in documents from the late 18th century. The second name, "Borj Al-Barmil" (The Barrel Tower), appeared later, with the first reference to it by this name coming from the traveler Bashi Boule in 1861. * Damage and Restorations: The tower sustained damage during the French attack on Essaouira on August 15, 1844. Some accounts suggest that locals intentionally demolished part of it to prevent the French from using it. It has undergone a series of restorations over the years, including those in the 19th century by Sultan Moulay Abd al-Rahman. Its most recent restoration was carried out by the Port Development and Exploitation Office and the Inspectorate of Historical Monuments and Sites of Essaouira. * Classification: The Scala du Port, dominated by Borj Al-Barmil, was classified as a historical monument under a Moroccan Dahir (royal decree) dated August 30, 1924, underscoring its significant heritage and historical value. Today, Borj Al-Barmil is a significant tourist attraction in Essaouira, drawing visitors to admire its beautiful historic architecture and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. It has also gained international fame after some scenes from the series "Game of Thrones" were filmed there.

I had the privilege of praying Jumah at the Mohamed Ben Youssef Mosque in the heart of Essaouira’s medina, and it was a truly serene and spiritual experience. Tucked within the charming old city, the mosque carries both historical and religious significance. The architecture is beautifully traditional, with clean white walls and simple Moroccan design elements that reflect the peaceful soul of the city. The mosque is well-maintained, offering a calm and welcoming space for prayer and reflection. The imam delivered a khutbah that was not only eloquent but also grounded in wisdom and relevance to everyday life. What stands out most is the sense of community within the mosque. Despite being in a city visited by many tourists, the mosque retains its authentic local spirit. The worshippers are warm and respectful, and there's a genuine feeling of unity and peace. If you’re in Essaouira and looking to attend Jumah or simply want a quiet place to pray, Mohamed Ben Youssef Mosque is a beautiful and spiritually uplifting choice.

Such an amazing week learning to kitesurf here. Everyone was so welcoming, fun, and supportive. The instructors were professional and patient and i always felt safe as a complete beginner! Every day was good vibes and i would 100% recommend Kitesurfmaroc to anyone looking to kitesurf in Essaouira!!

Had the very best time learning to kitesurf at Kitesurfmaroc. The crew is super friendly and chill, and their approach really professional. I came to them with a fear of handling the kite due to a former bad experience, and they did everything to reassure me and help me get my confidence back. They were really patient with me. The fact that they have the 4x4 to move to a better kite spot is of great value as you go to a safer and calmer spot, away from the crowd, with more stable wind. Will definitely come back here to kite with these lovely people. Thanks Lisa, Soulai, Fettah, Abdel and all the others for the lovely time we had!

Loved my time with the team at Kitesurfmaroc Essaouira. I came with an intermediary level and I took lessons during 6 days with the objective of becoming independant. The instructors are really professional, and they offered me the perfect balance between freedom in the practice and frequent tailored advice. Also, what was the best thing about the school is that they have access to a private beach where there are only a few schools so there's plenty of space in the water and you learn faster than on the main beach where all the other schools are. Overall a great experience I would definitely recommend !!

Hostel La Smala is a laid-back accommodation in Essaouira's Kasbah district, offering a shared lounge, terrace, and a rooftop restaurant/bar with sea views. Guests can enjoy an a la carte or continental breakfast and appreciate the clean rooms with comfortable beds. The stunning sea view from the hostel provides a magical experience, especially during sunset. The friendly staff, including Guka and Fatimazahra, ensure exceptional hospitality.
Thank you so much I truly loved the place — it was very comfortable and gave me a great sense of peace. What impressed me the most was the staff: everyone there genuinely works hard to make you happy, always greeting you with a kind smile and warm attitude. I loved the place and the people working there. I highly recommend this place with all my heart. I would also like to extend a special thank you to the owner. I know he puts in a lot of effort to make everything perfect, and that clearly shows through the whole experience. Thank you once again!
Tawfik B — Google review
Incredible location, the terrace is the best part- incredible sea view and for sunset! (I’d recommend getting here an hour before sunset for the best tables). Also have live music (DJ/house music) most nights 7-9pm. For a hostel, the food/drink prices are expensive, especially compared to elsewhere in the medina, but you pay for the view! Rooms are humid, but this is the norm in the medina due to the heat and the sea- I’d recommend getting a sea-view room if possible for more airflow!! Although, there are dehumidifiers in the private rooms. The toilets and showers are clean (+hot water!). It is quiet (not very social, if looking for a social hostel experience) and has a wide variety of guests/ages. There are a lot of steps (if less able bodied/handicapped, beware). Maybe 4 flights of stairs to the rooms, and 5 to the terrace.

My stay was an absolute joy! The rooftop views were stunning, the vibe was laid-back and friendly, and the staff made me feel truly welcome , especially KHALIL who was so kind and helpful. Everything was clean, stylish, and full of character. I’ll definitely be coming back it felt like home away from home

The roof is great but the cafe overpriced. The room was bad. Smelt of mold and damp. I had just arrived in Morocco so excitement stopped me complaining. After it rain the humidity was bad as well. There was no fan and no sea breeze. It was awful. Single room 77 to be avoided at all costs.

Staying at La Smala Hostel was truly one of the highlights of my trip. From the moment I arrived, I felt a special energy—calm, warm, and full of good vibes. The place is beautifully designed, every corner feels intentional and cozy, blending Moroccan charm with a modern, laid-back style. But what made the experience truly unforgettable were the amazing people working there—especially Fatima Zahra & Fatima Zahra (yes, both of them!). These two incredible women brought so much life, kindness, and joy to the space. They were always smiling, helpful, and genuinely interested in making sure everyone felt welcome and at home. Their presence alone made the hostel feel like more than just a place to sleep—it felt like a little family. Everything was clean, well organized, and comfortable. The rooftop terrace was the perfect place to relax, meet people, or just enjoy a peaceful moment with a coffee. Breakfast was simple but fresh and delicious, and the team was always happy to share tips about where to go, what to eat, and how to explore the area in the most authentic way. La Smala is not just a hostel—it’s an experience, a vibe, and a memory I’ll carry with me. Huge thanks to the whole team, and especially to the two Fatima Zahras, for their hearts, their smiles, and their magic. I’ll definitely be back, and I’ll recommend this place to everyone looking for something real, warm, and beautiful

Francoise L — Google review
The beach felt overcrowded in every direction. It’s still interesting and you can surely find space but the overwhelming amount of horses and dromedary with their masters all around felt a bit too much. They are very competitive between each other to get clients and there was even quite an unpleasant and vivid fight between the “chameliers” while a young family was in their care, on the animals. April being the windy season, there were a lot of kite surfers and it added to the colorful look of the beach.

Pretty nice beach. Sandy and fairly shallow entry. Relatively clean. If one is into camel or horse ride, these are available (personally, I felt that the animals there are often abused and can’t support these activities). Close to a few restaurants and the Medina. Overall, worth a visit.

We booked a massage with this agency with a SPA called « chez Naïma » which is next door and unfortunately we didn’t get what we agreed for. Instead of 2h (1h Hammam, 1h massage) we had 1h Hammam, only 30min massage and 30min waiting… We arrived in the massage room at 5:55, massage started at 6:12 and ended at 6:43!They told us it’s finished but you can relax on the bed until 7… The hammam was not very hot but looks like this is the way in Morocco. Service during the hammam, good! Regarding the massage, despite the fact it was way too short it was ok without being professional (lots of low volume talking between both massagist) Doing massage in Essaouira YES, in this place NO !

The French Institute D'essaouira is part of a network of 12 institutes in Morocco, dedicated to promoting French language and culture. It hosts various cultural events such as concerts, debates, and exhibitions that are free of charge. The institute serves as a popular meeting place for researchers, students, artists, writers, and individuals with diverse skills and knowledge. Under the direction of Ms. Louisa BABACI, it offers a welcoming environment for learning and cultural exchange.

Learning French here, so far so good

(Translated by Google) There is a slightly chubby French lady at reception who is really condescending and wastes people's time. I called to come to a concert and find out if there were any seats left, and I was told there was no problem. So I drove 45 minutes to be told that all the tickets were sold. Shame on this institute, don’t set foot there.

(Translated by Google) We came for a concert during the Gnawa festival... Beyond the organization which leaves much to be desired and the number of people present in questionable security conditions, more than a hundred instead of sixty, we were entitled to to a pseudo fusion between a Parisian and a Gnawa... In reality no fusion at all. Too bad, big disappointment...

(Translated by Google) On a spatial level, a sort of small Riad (traditional Moroccan house), therefore deprived of a performance hall where the students could perform. Very restricted, frustrating. It is nevertheless a place which allows the promotion of the French language and culture.
