Discover the charm of Olinda by visiting Casa dos Bonecos Gigantes de Olinda, where you can admire the traditional giant dolls that are an integral part of the city's carnival celebrations. These original dolls, some as tall as three and a half meters, are on display at the museum during the carnival off-season. During carnival week, these larger-than-life figures lead various street blocos such as Homem da Meia-Noite and Mulher do Dia.
It was very unique experience for us. We can see a lot of festival stuffs for carnival. A lot of big faces will wait for you. Admission fee is 10BRL per adult, kids are for free. It is worth to visit.
Papipupenta — Google review
Casa dos Bonecos Gigantes isn’t just a photo-op—it’s a living archive of Pernambuco’s Carnival. The towering papier-mâché figures you meet here (think the legendary “Homem da Meia-Noite,” which opens Olinda’s Carnival) embody nearly a century of street tradition and local pride, carried to frevo rhythms through historic hills. Displays are immersive and well-curated: rows of giants line bright, festooned rooms, so you can admire the craftsmanship up close—paintwork, fabrics, and those expressive faces you usually glimpse only in a parade. It’s compact, easy to visit, and perfect for families and culture lovers alike.
Enrico D — Google review
craftsman shop where the Carnaval dolls are made. You learn about how they are are being crafted/fabricated. Great selection of dolls can be seen. Visit recommended!

Very special experience, you have to check it out when visiting Olinda
Manon G — Google review
It costs R$10 (Oct. 2020) but it’s a well worth visit. These giant dolls are part of Pernambuco’s culture. There is a guide but only in Portuguese. Most dolls represent state personalities (even people from other areas of Brazil might recognize only a few of them), but you can also find some “celebrities”.

Paço do Frevo is a vibrant venue that offers classes, multimedia presentations, and rotating exhibitions dedicated to the local dance and frevo music. Recently renovated, it is also home to several fascinating historic and cultural sites such as the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the Franciscan Museum of Sacred Art, Cais do Sertao museum, and Centro de Artesanato de Pernambuco.
We had a great experience at Paço do Frevo. The interactive art, music, and dancing was a big hit during our Recife trip.

Nice little park to take a break at. Shade trees and breeze off the ocean made it very enjoyable.
Sam B — Google review
it's a small museum about Frevo, there's nothing special, first time I went there the 3rd floor was closed, but they opened it the last time I went. the entrance is 10 reais and the 3rd floor has a beautiful view and it's good for pictures, they tried to make a room for pictures on the 1st floor but the light isn't good so it's not really good for taking pictures.
Iury M — Google review
Sooo beautiful and colorful and the view is amazing. I really enjoyed. 🤍❤️
Vitor D — Google review
It's a small museum on the Frevo tradition, a dance. You will find lots of information on the emergence of the musical genre in the form of words written on the walls and the glass. If you don't mind reading and have a decent understanding of Portuguese, I definitely recommend walking in here. For the more audio-visual people, there are some spaces with videos for you to watch on favela culture. Moreover, there's plenty of old carnival banners for you to look at. For the price of 10 Reais this place is definitely worth it.
Arturo G — Google review
Must see in Recife! It's like a journey through history thanks to music, and everything has English translation!
Red P — Google review
Less writing, more dancing, please. I visited the museum about Frevo in Recife and I still don't know what Frevo music sounds like and what the dancing looks like. I went in rooms with lots and lots of writing on the walls. There are some pictures, and a few artifacts. These exhibits told us that this is a profound Perambucano cultural heritage, and it moves people deeply and is a part of the roots of the region. But it didn't show that. But there was not one single video or demonstration or anything showing what the actual dance looked like, and no place that I found that played the music. A lot of photos, which is good, but for a museum about dancing?

The Sacred Art Museum of Pernambuco, housed in a historic building dating back to 1537, was once the House of Representatives and later the palace of the 1st Bishop of Olinda. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts a diverse collection of religious art and artifacts from the 16th century to contemporary pieces by local artists. The museum features numerous exhibitions showcasing works primarily made from wood and clay, including pieces from the 18th century as well as those created through modern competitions.
Fantastic collection! Large amount of carved figures from the 18th century, including a really remarkable image of Sao Elesbão. There are also 3 recently discovered beheaded stone statues, likely destroyed during the Dutch conquest in the 1630s. The building is the formal episcopal palace. Two floors, lots to see. Best religious art museum in the northeast. 5 reais. Clean bathrooms and bag storage.
Josiah W — Google review
This museum is fantastic. First of all, it has a great collection. Also the name of the museum is outstanding.
M P — Google review
The Sacred Art Museum of Pernambuco is appropriately located inside a wonderful old building (built in 1537) that served as the House of Representatives; in 1676, it became the palace of the 1st Bishop of the City of Olinda. This building and the surrounding area were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The collection is made up of various religious art and artifacts dating from the 16th Century. Currently, they are only open from 2 PM until 5 PM every day except Monday when it is closed. The admission is only R$6, which is just a little more than $1 US, so it’s worth it.

(Translated by Google) Very nice museum with 8 rooms, almost free entry (5 reales). The region has a lot of history since it is crossed by the church as the main organizer and center of power from the 16th century (when the oldest churches date from) until well into the 20th century. The museum pieces are very varied, and you can see the adaptation of the church tradition to the local population (native or brought specifically for slave labor). The only thing I wanted to do was visit the patio that was not allowed for visitors, a shame because there were remains of an old demolished church, as well as a lot of nature. But it is a good place to visit and learn a little more about the extensive history of this region with so much cultural variety.

(Translated by Google) The Pernambuco Museum of Sacred Art stands out, right away, for its construction. The architecture of the former Episcopal Palace, which houses the museum, is already naturally beautiful and carries enormous historical value. The imposing façade, with its classical details, is an invitation to travel back in time. However, its external beauty doesn't hide a visible problem: lack of maintenance. Like other tourist attractions in Olinda, the museum appears to be poorly maintained. Peeling paint and signs of neglect are evident, and this somewhat overshadows its charm. It's a shame, as the place has immense potential. Even though you didn't go inside to see the works of art, the experience of simply admiring the building's architecture is worthwhile, especially for those who appreciate history. However, if you're looking for an impeccable location, you may be disappointed. Despite its state of conservation, the building's historical importance is undeniable. I recommend a visit to anyone who wants to appreciate the colonial architecture and history of the region, but with the caveat that the place urgently needs renovation to be valued as it deserves.

Catholic church
Nestled in the charming city of Olinda, Pernambuco, the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Amparo is a stunning example of Baroque architecture with a rich history. Originally constructed in 1613 by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Amparo for men of color, this church faced destruction during a fire set by Dutch forces in 1631.
(Translated by Google) The Baroque church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo is mentioned by Gilberto Freyre on page 115 of his guide to Olinda: “Another old church in Olinda is that of Amparo, which already existed in 1613; it was destroyed by the fire of 1631 and rebuilt in 1644. [...] It is not a church that has anything grand about it; but the carving work in its main chapel is not insignificant; and its side altars – that of Bom Jesus and that of Santa Cecília [patron saint of music] – are worth a look.” The unusual pink color of the altars and the hydraulic tile floor are striking. [...]

Instituto Ricardo Brennand is a cultural institution located in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. It was established in 2002 by Ricardo de Almeida Coimbra Brennand and is housed within the medieval-style Forte de Sao Joao Batista do Brum. The institute features a military and weaponry museum, an art gallery, extensive parkland with outdoor sculptures, gardens, and a well-stocked library.
Very beautiful museum. So much to see and do. Really enjoyed being there. Went with my family.
JP S — Google review
Have to admit, I was a little underwhelmed by certain parts of Recife, abandoned buildings and evident economic struggle; but not this place, apparently a lot of the money of the town went to whoever built this place. I was legit amazed by the collection of global art and artifacts that Mr. Brennand had accumulated. Huuge tapestries, ivory carved dioramas from asia, bottero sculptures, local art, and enough medieval suits of armor and weapons to hold off a small invading army; all housed in immaculately manicured gardens and enormous brick chapels and halls. If you have it, I appreciate the desire to let everyone else enjoy it also.
Kiantar B — Google review
Simply incredible. Looks like a very European art museum in the middle of North East Brazil, and even though most of the artworks are replicas, it's surely worth visiting. Many expositions are hosted and the permanent collection is very beautiful. Fair price, no wait and absolutely the best art experience in Recife.
ALESSANDRO C — Google review
This is one of my favorite places to visit in Recife. The Brennand collection of weapons is fantastic and they certainly have a vast collection of art. My favorite time to go is during the week when it rains a little because there aren't as many people around so you can have a lot of time to yourself. Great architecture as well. This place is worth your time for sure.
Nephi B — Google review
Great place to visit! Teachers, professors, and students pay only half.
Carla Q — Google review
The architecture is stunning but the gallery displays a lot of replicas and some originals. Most pieces don't have information on who made them or where, nor any historical context. The arms collection os really interesting but could also use some more information. Also, the ticket priced at R$50 makes it more expensive than most Brazilians can afford.
Stella ( — Google review
One of the best and most unique museums in the northeast of Brazil, if not all Brazil. A must-visit if you’re in the northeast! The Dutch tapestries and the history of the Dutch in Brazil is fascinating, as is a vast building filled with thousands of weapons from the last hundred years. Add in the stunning gardens filled with capybara and monkeys strolling around and playing and this truly is a memorable place to spend a few hours. Cafe and restaurant on site too. Entrance is $50 BRL.

Centro Cultural Cais do Sertão is a modern museum located in Recife Antigo, serving as a celebration of the music of singer-composer Luiz Gonzaga and the culture of Northeastern Brazil. The museum, which was once old port warehouses, pays tribute to the stories of the Brazilian people. It offers an interactive experience about the Sertao and Luiz Gonzaga, making it one of the most beautiful cultural centers in South America.
I was alarmed that the building used to be an old disabled warehouse: it is completely beautiful! It's walking distance from the Marco Zero square and a nice place to bring children. They have all sorts of art installations (paintings, scenarios, sculptures, music, videos, etc) and interactive games to honor the people of Sertão Nordestino, specially in Pernambuco. There is also a tribute to Luiz Gonzaga, a famous Brazilian forró (and other genres) singer. A lot of volunteers work there and I think it's awesome to value your own culture. There is also a space for events if need to book one.
Graziella B — Google review
Nice and lovely museum. For Brazilian standards it is a very good museum. The collection is nice and it is nice you can try the different instruments of forro. This improves the understanding of the music significant and I liked it a lot, the music guy was explaining everything and even could speak English very well.
F. N — Google review
I went here years ago when it had just opened and it was GREAT. Now, years later, the place is falling apart. Literally half of the museum is ‘under maintenance’. The whole upper floor is closed, several exhibits are gone and the floor is full of holes. Very sad. Recife and Pernambuco, if you are proud of your culture and heritage (and you should be), invest in this museum and make it great again. Do it for Luiz!
Vj V — Google review
Beautiful small museum, huge tribute to ‘sertão’, to being Nordestino, being Brazilian. Poetry, music and inspiration is everywhere. For free.
Ana — Google review
This place was incredible, however multiple pieces were missing or under maintenance which made my experience a bit unpleasant. I still learned a lot about the "sertão", Pernambuco's country side affected by drought and their difficult life. I hope the maintenance ends soon so we can have access to the other parts of the museum.
Stella ( — Google review
It is a very interesting cultural space, particularly for Brazilians. It tells the story of Luiz Gonzaga, a famous 20th century singer and musician who took regional music to national and international audiences. Some of the audiovisual equipment is not working properly, but it is worth a visit. There is a small entrance fee.
Carlos Q — Google review
Nice experience, brings good knowledge and understanding with the visit.
Pedro R — Google review
There is no way this place is 4,7 stars. One might say it does a greet job of reflecting Recife and Pernambuco’s perpetually broken nature, as most exhibits were broken despite its relative newness. Exhibits were either too wordy and detailed or too broad and disconnected. attractive in look but lacking substance and a rip off at any price

The Catedral da Sé (São Salvador do Mundo) in Olinda was founded in 1540 as the Matriz de Sao Salvador, serving as the oldest religious temple in the city and a symbol of Portuguese presence. Despite being destroyed in 1631, it was reconstructed in 1656 and reopened in 1677. Over centuries, it underwent various restoration and modification processes but still holds significant importance for preserving Olinda's historical-cultural architecture.
Buy your entrance at the door. Quite cheap and worth the purchase because the cathedral has even better views of Recife and Olinda from its mirante and the second floor. The church is also really nice and worth taking the time to visit and look at as its history encompasses the history of the area and the cities themselves.

The Monastery of St. Benedict, also known as Igreja e Mosteiro Sao Bento, is a baroque church in Olinda with a rich history and stunning architecture. The church features a magnificent 14-meter gold altar where Gregorian chants by the monks can be enjoyed on Sunday mornings. Despite being burned during the Dutch invasion in 1631, many precious artifacts were saved by the Benedictine monks.
Church is currently closed for major renovations. They began Nov 2024, staff said they should last 3 years. Luckily, a monk gave me a brief tour of the church's choir as well as the cloister for 5 reais.

The original church and buildings were burned when the Dutch invaded in 1631, but the Benedictine monks managed to save many of the precious artifacts of the monastery. The Dutch withdrew from Brazil in 1654 and the Church and Monastery were completely rebuilt between 1688 and 1692. Further details to the façade were done in the late 1700’s. It is open to the public and for lovers of history, architecture or culture, and is free to visit.

Alto Da Sé is a bustling square offering stunning views of the city and the coast, as well as featuring craft vendors and an astronomical observatory.
Best place to start and or end your visit to Olinda. It serves as the unofficial center of where tourists visit in the city center as it has the cathedral and many of the places to eat around it. You can also pick up a tour guide in this area (sometimes involuntarily). Beware the pushy guides. Just say no strongly.

Alto da Sé is the soul of Olinda! A charming hilltop square with breathtaking views of Recife’s skyline and the ocean. Home to the iconic Sé Church, artisan markets, and lively bars. Perfect for sunset, souvenirs, and tapioca snacks. A must-visit for culture and vibes! 🌅 #Olinda #Pernambuco

This is a must if you are visiting the Recife/Olinda area. If you plan a walk around the Olinda historic neighborhood, I recommend you to start by here.and then walk down the hill. You have a colonial cathedral where the entry costs just 6R, and from its patio and upper floor you ca enjoy breathtaking views of Olinda and Recife. Plus, you can have a good meal and a delicious drink in a restaurant with a privileged view.

Very nice view over Olinda and Recife. There are many nice shops around as well as plenty of tapioca food trucks. The best viewpoint though is a bit lower where the market with handcraft goods is.

Nestled in the heart of Recife, the Capela Dourada, or Golden Chapel, is a stunning testament to Baroque architecture and religious devotion. Established on May 13, 1696, by Captain General Caetano de Melo Castro and constructed under the skilled hands of master mason Antonio Fernandes de Matos, this chapel was completed remarkably quickly. By September 15, 1697—just sixteen months later—it opened its doors to worshippers with great ceremony.
Nice chapel with lots of paintings and gilded carvings. To access, enter the small unmarked door in between the two churches (image attached). 15 reais. Note that you can also see the chapel for free, from inside the church (but just through a fence).
Josiah W — Google review
Spectacular must see in the centre of Recife. Pernambuco was the richest par of Brazil during colonial times, because of the sugar industry. Sugar was exported through port of Recife. Merchants that exported the sugar had their club - ordem terceira. And they created this chapel as a gathering room for the members of the club and guests. Fascinating history and very well preserved and presented. Costs 15 reais only and there there were volunteers giving all the explanations about the space in Portuguese

Not really worth visiting, unless you are very interested in the Franciscan order and its establishment in Brazil. Lots of baroque wood carving and gold plate. Strange diorama of St Francis and the pope, accompanied by several female saints, who looked like characters in a horror movie. We didn’t take any photos.

Worth the visit. Very helpful and knowledgeable lay franciscans at the door itching to show you around. Pretty wild stuff, from gold covered walls (not sure how that jives with the poverty vow, but didn't ask ..) to paintings of crucified priests. Definitely worth the visit.

Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a 17th-century architectural marvel with a striking black and white facade, adorned with opulent gilded altarpieces and side chapels. The basilica's history dates back to the institutional reform in the Carmelite order, known as the Touraine reform. It was built on the site of an old palace after consensus was reached to establish a church dedicated to Lady of Desterro.

Igreja do Carmo is one of the seven churches located in the historic center of Olinda, Brazil. It was the first church established by the Carmelite Order in Latin America and is known for its intricate altar carvings. The church's construction began in 1580 but was mostly destroyed during the Dutch invasion of 1631. Reconstruction started in 1654, and a large cross was erected in front of the church in 1704, which unfortunately got damaged recently.

Construction on this church began in 1580 under the auspices of the Carmelite Order and was the first church of their order in the New World. Like most of the churches in Olinda, it was mostly destroyed during the Dutch invasion of 1631. Reconstruction began in 1654 and in 1704 a large cross was erected in front of the church. Unfortunately, some drunk tourist tried climbing the cross and recently broke it. They are currently collecting donations to repair this relic. The church sits on the main plaza of the city of Olinda, on top of a hill overlooking the town below and the beach. It’s a great place to start a tour of the city and if it’s open, I’d definitely recommend going in this historic church in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Olinda.

Museum Mamulengo is a place where you can learn about the origin of mamulengo, a typical puppet from Pernambuco that is very popular in northeastern Brazilian culture. The museum displays various pieces related to this art form and seeks to preserve the tradition of these dolls. With around 1500 pieces in its collection, it offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the cultural heritage of Pernambuco and the northeast.
So much fun to see these puppets representing both common themes in our lives as well as superstition and fantasy. If you speak a little Portuguese, the docent will take the time to explain what each puppet represents. I enjoyed it.

This small museum is located inside another location which also has other art exhibits. “Mamulengos” are puppets, but more than that—they are puppets from the northeast of Brazil, so they are culturally significant (and fun too!). (Translated by Google) The remaining structure of the Senado Ruin, on Rua Bernardo Vieira de Melo, in front of Mercado da Ribeira, in Carmo, in Olinda, will receive recovery, cleaning and conservation work. This Thursday (7), 9am, the service order will be signed. The works will begin immediately and are scheduled to be completed at the end of January 2020. The formality of the signing will commemorate the Cry of the Republic Day in advance, celebrated on November 10th. The proposed intervention in the Senado Ruin comprises the cleaning and consolidation of the remaining structure, including emergency shoring; stabilization of spaces between existing stones and filling of cracks and cladding of facades. The service also includes creating a Damage Identification Form, producing and posting explanatory material at the construction site and presenting photographic and descriptive reports. The ruin is a monument made of stone masonry and brick pressed with mortar. It is undergoing an accelerated process of degradation and depredation, with displacement of parts and cracks. The first Cry of Independence of the Americas was held there, 70 years before the French Revolution and 60 before that of the United States. The total value of the work is estimated at 30 thousand reais. Financing occurs through the Preservation Fund. History Where today is the ruin, the Olinda Senate was located, something that today would correspond to the city's City Council. After it was closed and the Olinda Legislative Branch was transferred to another neighborhood, where the City Hall building is today, the property collapsed and ended up collapsing. This was part 1 of 2. It was a truly underwhelming adventure. I could have easily walked the distance traveled and enjoyed the city up close. Instead, we were on a boat with uncomfortably loud music and a tour guide whose attempts at English were as effective as me communicating in Chinese. I don't speak Chinese. It was hot and humid. The scenery was better enjoyed from a 2-minute YouTube video from a 10-year-old phone. I do not recommend this 1-hour tortuous ride with piercing loud music overriding the attempt at narration.
