Jozenji-dori Avenue is a stunning tree-lined street in Sendai, renowned for its majestic zelkova trees and captivating bronze sculptures. Stretching 700 meters from Nishi Park to Kotodai Park, this picturesque avenue offers a delightful blend of nature and urban life. Visitors can enjoy vibrant greenery in spring, colorful autumn leaves, and enchanting winter illuminations that create an inviting atmosphere year-round.
One of the best favorite streets in Japan. In all season you can enjoy landscape and the atmosphere of the forest city.
Yuki T — Google review
There is nothing much to see here except a densely tree-lined walkway with some sculptures. It is a nice walk, and from other's photo, it looks like the trees will be decorated with lights and they will light up when it's festive season. And that does look pretty impressive. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste time to come here unless you are already here for something else.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Nestled on the scenic slopes of Mt. Yagi, Yagiyama Zoological Park is a delightful destination for animal enthusiasts and families alike. Established in 1965, this charming zoo showcases around 600 animals from 115 different species, thoughtfully arranged by their natural habitats. Just a short ten-minute journey from Sendai Station, it’s easily accessible via the Yagiyama Zoological Park Subway Station.
If I remember correctly, the ticket was about 459 yen and it is definitely worth it. There are a good amount of animals within the park and they are all very well kept. If you are hungry, there a quite a few places where you can get food within the zoo. There’s a cafeteria style stores and desserts stand.
Rachaphon W — Google review
I can say that this is a great zoo that offers a variety of animals, and their exhibitions are well-suited for wildlife needs! All the animals seem happy and healthy, being friendly with visitors. They aren’t shy and will come closer to humans! 😂 The ticket is really cheap! Even if you’re a foreigner, they don’t charge you extra. For those coming by subway on the Tozai-line, you can walk to the west gate and use the elevator to go up to the 5th floor. You'll arrive at the zoo entrance easily! !
Kritsakorn M — Google review
There are some amazing parts of this zoo, and some worrying parts. The general areas are well kept and there’s some amazing planting and structuring done for most animals. There’s a nice cafe and everything to check in and every interaction we had with staff was excellent. There are some honestly woefully sized areas for some of the animals, though. The apes have what are realistically tiny cages. It’s no wonder they got quite unhappy and rowdy at one point. There were large birds like eagles in cages that would normally be reserved for small birds. This surely can’t be okay for them. Again, most of the enclosures were close to or appropriately sized for a zoo. They’re doing quite a bit of work at present, and nearly a quarter of the zoo is being worked on. Hopefully this space is for some of the animals whose enclosures are currently terrible. Again, lots of great things about the zoo, but I was a bit shocked by some of the spaces for animals.
Ryan P — Google review
Yagiyama Zoological Park is located on the west side of Sendai city, offers an accessible day out for families and tourists. To reach the park, simply hop on the Tozai Line and disembark at Yagiyama Zoological Park station. Upon arrival, My initial impression was that the park feels a bit dated. The facilities and overall setup appear to have weathered the years. Despite the slightly smaller enclosures compared to other zoos I’ve visited, the residents seemed lively and well-cared-for. One highlight worth catching is the parrot and eagle demonstration. The staff engage with these magnificent birds, guiding them through impressive aerial maneuvers. It’s a delightful event for visitors of all ages. In summary, Yagiyama Zoological Park may not be the flashiest zoo around, but it’s a decent spot for a family outing.
Javin Y — Google review
Honestly the zoo didn't look exactly well maintained - some animals were kept in dirty and worn spaces with strong smell. I even saw some racoons with patchy fur which was disheartening. But with how cheap the entrance fee was, I couldn't say I was actually surprised. 😕
Oscar C — Google review
Yagiyama Zoological Park is an absolute gem! From the moment you arrive, you're greeted with a well-maintained and thoughtfully laid-out park. The animal enclosures are spacious and appear to prioritize the welfare of the animals, offering clear viewing opportunities for visitors. The variety of species is impressive, keeping both children and adults captivated. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, adding to the overall positive experience. We especially appreciated the clear signage and helpful map that made navigating the park a breeze. It's a fantastic place for a family outing, offering a wonderful balance of education and entertainment. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the area!
Frogstud — Google review
It’s not big but you can find various kinds of animals. But some area is under renovation now. The monkey don’t like the biscuits you can feed them anyway🙂
Tanis L — Google review
The kids love the place so much. There is a wide range of various animals. Entrance isn't very expensive. If you are in a family and one of the parents is a student then your family enters for free. However, the animals seem a bit depressed, especially the penguins!

Sendai West Park, also known as Nishi Park, is a historic city park that dates back to 1875. It's the oldest park in Sendai and is famous for its seasonal cherry blossoms. The park features an observatory and a baseball stadium, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Every summer, the park becomes a hub of activity with many foreigners visiting to enjoy the natural beauty and the annual cherry blossom festival held in mid-April.

Sendai West Park was a great scene to witness. Even though the Cherry Blossoms are blooming later than forecasts predicted, the great people of Sendai were there in force. Many fine food stall were there serving a variety of treats. And, most importantly, groups of families and friends have spread their mats and have set the party tone. Sake and beer!!
Chuck C — Google review
Nishi Koen or West Park of Sendai City is one of major green lands in Sendai, and it is popular in Spring [around early April] for Cherry Blossom, but it also plays an important role for Sendai Tanabata Festival fireworks night. Traditionally, Sendai will hold its annual Sendai Tanabata Festival from August 6 to August 8. And one night before the Festival begins, there is annual Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival takes place on August 5th. It is generally held at Nishi Koen, or West Park, of the Sendai City. Many food stalls do businesses in the park by providing foods and drinks, also games. In this day, from afternoon to the night, many Japanese, especially young Japanese, will wear traditional Japanese robes to enjoy the gatherings with family members or friends, especially the loved one. The fireworks is about 1 hour and is a splendid social and cultural event and prelude to the Sendai Tanabata Festival, and visitors can see many Japanese walk from various directions to Nishi Koen Avenue and Park from afternoon till night for the party. At the Park, there are numerous paper boxes which are prepared and used for garbage, food leftover, paper plate and cup, plastic bottle and cup for recycle programs, etc.

Pretty blossoms at the end of the season in late April but we didn't expect the flea market, candy floss and barbecue food stalls
David J — Google review
It was a nice park, with some space to roam around. Sometimes there are events held here. The cherry blossoms here are great, and there are food stalls and performers here. You can have a picnic here as well. All and all, it's a nice park.
Valerie V — Google review
Sendai West Park is a popular destination for cherry blossom lovers in spring, when the park is filled with pink and white flowers. In other seasons, it may not have beautiful flowers but it is a popular location for locals to relax and do exercise. If you visit the park, you can find a large Japanese doll statue that stands near the north entrance. You can also find a C60 steam locomotive displayed next to the statue.
Javin Y — Google review
Came here at a great time where all the cherry blossom are in bloom, the view was beautiful and the weather was great too, it's a great spot to just enjoy nature for a while and it is just 10 minutes from Sendai station, which is very convenient.
Tracy L — Google review
During Sakura the park is full of food stalls and happy people enjoying the cherry blossoms on the grass or from the food vendors’ tables. As a park it is nothing special, what makes it fun is the plentiful cherry trees and people compacted together enjoying food and drinks. During cherry blossom time it also have evening lights which is fun, bring your jacket for the evening cherry blossom viewing.

Mikamine Park, located south of central Sendai in the Tohoku region, is a fantastic spot for families to enjoy hanami. The park boasts hundreds of large Somei Yoshino and Weeping Cherry Trees, making it a popular cherry blossom viewing destination. With its wide variety of cherry trees, the cherry blossom season at Mikamine Park lasts from early to late April.
OMG! It's one of the most beautiful park in Sendai City! Can you believe. Well if you don't believe then visit yourself to believe. Otherwise i really don't care! A beautiful well maintained park, famous for cherry blossoms 🌸🌟❤️ (large variety of Sakura), quite crowded for Hanami (peak time is early 1-2 week of April), about 15-20 min drive from Sendai station. Features a huge, open green lawn surrounded by hundreds of pink cherry trees springing to life from mid- to late-April each year. The spacious grounds are perfect for flower viewing parties and photo shoots. TRUE, you can become a great artist (photographer, or a movie director by practising your skills here)!! I became !!!! Parking is free ! Accessible via bus from yagiyama station or Nagamachi minami station. It's next to Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University, or Nishitaga Chūgakkō (Nishitaga Junior High School). Good for recreational and children activities, or local festival or events. Due to COVID19, several events have been cancelled. Honestly you can come here anytime. Even if you are bored and have nothing to do at home, literally nothing to do. You will find similar folks here! PRO-ADVICE: Take a stroll around the park or go hunting for the best postcard-perfect cherry blossom pictures to complete your outing. Rest assured that the wide area in the park means you are nearly guaranteed to find an amazing view. Grab some food (Bento) from the food stalls, like savory grilled chicken skewers or piping hot takoyaki octopus fritters. If you are vegetarian like me, bring veg food! Highly recommended Park in Sendai! I visit quite often, here sharing some of pics and video from 8 April 2021! Love 🌟✨🍎, Happy

Beautiful place to view sakura. Because of it's location (a bit remote, need to walk 15-20 minutes from closest subway station), it's not as crowded as other parks such as Nishi Park or Tsutsujigaoka Park. Mikamine Park is a bit pristine as you could see a lot of local birds nesting in the trees. That alone for me makes the park easily a 5 star location in my book.

Tohoku University Katahira Campus, founded in 1907, is a renowned research and science institution with esteemed law and business programs. Nestled in the university town of Sendai, Japan, it boasts historic buildings and a well-designed campus. Notably, it was once attended by the influential Chinese literary figure Lu Xun. The campus is celebrated for its picturesque scenery during spring and autumn, featuring cherry blossoms that adorn the grounds.
Katahira Campus is one of Tohoku University’s four major campuses. It houses Administrative Units, Science and Tech and Economic Research Institute. It seems that Tohoku University is very proud of its early Chinese student Lu Xun, 1904-1906, a Chinese modern writer, who was deemed to have significant roles in Chinese new cultural movement and Communism development in China. Thus, there is Lu Xun’s statute and archives on campus in memory of Lu Xun. Katahira Campus has an overall non-smoking policy and no bike-riding policy on many parts of the campus. Visitors surely can enjoy walking on its beautiful campus with tall trees growing almost everywhere. Some sidewalk concrete seems to be experimental with environmental friendly materials and suitable for walking and stepping on. It can be accessed by Sendai Subway at Aobadori Ichibancho Station.

Came here for a short walk as a tourist. This Uni trumps my home Uni in Singapore (not gonna name which) in terms of scenery and nature. Buildings are designed nicely and there are trees lining every street. We stopped by a cafe to get from delicious bread and coffee. I'm not sure how the curriculum is like but I'm pretty sure that I would've loved to do an exchange here.

To be honest, engineering course in Tohoku University is not so well designed. The poor arrangement by putting third-year undergrad course on the first year course schedule was really confusing and beyond our level at that time. The classes supposed to be taught in English sometimes are completely in Japanese. The undergraduate class contents sometimes can be surprisingly shallow and meaningless, as attendance is the most important thing in this university not understanding. One of few things good here is that I don't have to pay my tuition fee. But on the other hand, the promising statement of "a lot of opportunities to get scholarship" is just disappointing. To sustain yourself in this university, you NEED money in your bank account to prepare what's gonna happen next. I guess Tohoku University is a good one in Japan, as it indeed in the engineering and science society in Japan. However, internationalization in this university is still in progress and I would say not even mature enough. At this moment, I would say I will not even think about working or continuing my graduate study here in Sendai nor Japan. Life is tough here people, get ready and think carefully before you come here. Good luck to you and me.

Michinoku National Park, located about an hour's drive from Sendai, is a vast and beautifully landscaped public park spread over 650 hectares. It features playgrounds, flower fields, a boating lake, and an open-air folk museum. Visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the park with its colorful flowers, fountains, and even a variety of fish in the lake. While entry to the park requires a ticket on most days, there are select days with free entry.
A must see place in Miyagi Prefecture. You can spend hours here. If you don’t have any Japanese speakers/readers, the historical houses might not be as interesting. They offer so much for children. If you have young kids in Japan, this is the secret place that you may not see on your average Google search or TikTok travel person.

Super beautiful and spacious. I went when the tullip is in season, and it was so beautiful. The park is clean, and there are open spaces for children to run about and play (soccer, throw flying disc, basketball, etc).
Valerie V — Google review
This is the best park in this area of Japan. So much to do for the kids, endless amounts of beautiful trees and flowers, and some easy to access facilities and food and drink. Our kids still talk about the -first- time they came here in 2023, and we had another amazing time this time around too. From the awesome squishy running pad area, to the ball pit, kart area, amazing and large slides, flying foxes, and there’s still more! We came back for a reason and we’ll definitely come back again.

What an amazing park to spend a day at! About 20 min drive from Sendai station ... a big dam on the way to the park ...I went there on 11 October with my 🇯🇵 friend park is Quite spacious ... have boating, recreational rides for children and adults ... scenic beauty... flowers ...fountains ... colorful fish (koi) however, for entry in park, a ticket is required which is about 420 yen ... but free entry on selective days like 31 October 2020! Parking is 320 yen. 😇🌻🧚‍♂️⭐️😌 Highly recommended place to chill out. Love and peace Happy

Great place to spend time with your family. They have plenty of flower collections. You need to check their calendar when the flower blooms. Also, they have a great playground perfect for kids. You can set up a small tent around the park. There are several restaurants and food stalls inside the park so no need to worry if you are feeling hungry. You can also bring food inside the park.

It's a big area that has field playground, flower park, canteen and small history house (about preserved insect and old-life tools). There are many various flower and plants here. There's also a board near the plant to introducing the species and name of it. Entrance ticket cost me 450¥ Bus ticket cost is 1140¥ It's recommended to come on summer or on the bright day.

It is one of the great parks in Sendai area. It has pretty much everything you might expect at a park. It is mainly divided into three parts. The main part has the lots of playgrounds for the kids. Huge parking area. The admission fee is 450 yen for adults and free for the kids. Parking area is 310 yen for regular cars. There are various flower parks, lake where you can enjoy boat riding, bbq area, a special village with old style Japanese houses, indoor ball pool, small tricycles for kindergarten level and foot wheel type car ride for uppers and huge relaxing places. There are shops and bathrooms around. The second part which I didn’t visit yer but saw on the map has eco-camp ground, livestock barn, dog park and several other beautiful places. You can enter from the north gate. The third part is mainly a forest like area. There is a forest school in it. Great place for students to experience nature. Overall great place for both kids and adult. You can spend whole day here. Would like to come back again.

Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park, also known as Saigy Modoshi no Matsu Ken, is a picturesque hilltop green space with a rich history and stunning views. The park offers an observation deck and a restaurant where visitors can enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms and panoramic views of Matsushima Bay. The name "Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu" refers to a pine tree that played a role in a poet's pilgrimage, adding an intriguing historical element to the park.
It's a wonderful park fir enjoying the cherry blossom and sightseeing for the sea coast. You can walk to there from the JR station... about 25 minutes. During the cherry blossoming season, you have to wait for a long time if you drive to the park.

Akiu Traditional Craft Village is a hub of traditional craftsmanship in the Sendai area, featuring nine skilled artisans' workshops. Visitors can immerse themselves in various hands-on workshops such as handkerchief dyeing, kokeshi doll painting, and carving for a reasonable fee. The village is renowned for its kokeshi dolls, which are simple wooden forms originating from the region.
A local craftsman took me there and although I've lived in Sendai for twenty years, it was my first visit. It was a quiet day and there were open ateliers with artisans working on their crafts. I learned customers can experience making various wooden products like chopsticks, dolls and toys. Workshop cost is about 1000 yen per person.

It's a 20 minute walk from the bus station if you catch the city bus from Sendai station, some of it up hill, so be prepared. The park is small maybe 5 vendors but the are three worth stopping in. We hit the chest shop first but it was so far outside our price range. If you can afford 1k or more we can't suggest it enough. Public restrooms and another bus stop for a bus we weren't sure where it went.
Matthew D — Google review
Akiu craft park is a nice fun date, only about 40-50 minutes by bus from Sendai station. There are a range of little huts where you can do different crafts. We chose to paint our own Japanese wood dolls for about 1000Y. Suggest spending about 1-2 hours here. Beware the last bus back departs at 5pm.

(Translated by Google) August 24, 2025 I stopped by on my way back from hiking! It seems there's a water shortage, and the water level was quite low. There's no parking, so it might be best to park at the nearby waterworks office and come and see for yourself. The roads are narrow and cars pass by, so be careful if you're bringing children. It's worth seeing, but it wasn't the kind of place where you could take your time. Both the dam and the dam lake have nice scenery, but it's a shame that there aren't many photo opportunities. The best viewing points are the view of the water discharge from the observatory at the central pillar of the crown, and the view of Mt. Mimine and Mt. Funagata across the dam lake. (Translated by Google) [Sendai Environmental Development Okura Dam] A dam built on the Okura River in the Natori River system. Japan Society of Civil Engineers Selected Civil Engineering Heritage Site It is a prefectural dam managed by the River Division of the Miyagi Prefectural Civil Engineering Department and the Sendai Regional Dam General Office (Okura Dam Management Office), but it was originally managed by the Tohoku Regional Construction Bureau of the Ministry of Construction (currently the Tohoku Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism). This is a specific multi-purpose dam constructed. The artificial lake formed by the dam was built to control the Natori River and serve as a water tank for Sendai City, and is named Lake Okura. The dam was originally planned as a gravity concrete dam with three gates. Since both banks were made of solid rock, mainly made of andesite and dacite, an arch-type concrete dam was adopted as it could reduce the amount of concrete used. However, the dam site was a wide valley with a steep ravine on the left bank and gentle flat land on the right bank, making it difficult to construct an arch dam using normal methods. For this reason, it was decided to build an artificial abutment (called an abutment or thrust block) at the boundary between the valley and the plain on the right bank, and use this as a support to construct two arch dams on both banks. This type of concrete dam is called a double arch concrete dam, and because it has multiple arch dams connected, it is classified as a multiple arch dam. There are only two multiple arch dams in Japan, and in addition to Okura Dam, there is Toyotomiike Dam (Yusita River), which was built in 1930 in Kagawa Prefecture. Toyotoshi Pond Dam is a five-tiered arch dam, and Okura Dam is the only two-tiered double arch dam in Japan. No multiple arch dam has been constructed in Japan since Okura Dam. The only rare type of dam in Japan. It's quite huge, so it's impressive to see it up close.
