Bridge
The Pont de l'Université de Lyon, also known as the University of Lyon Bridge, is a picturesque structure that was constructed in 1903 to replace a ferry service across the Rhone River. Despite being destroyed during World War II, it was restored and reopened in 1947. The bridge offers stunning views of the surrounding area and connects Quai du Dr Gailleton with Quai Claude Bernard.
Pont de l'Université de Lyon is one of the most attractive in Lyon. It was inaugurated in 1903, it was damaged during the second world war, restored and re-opened in 1947. The riverside walk goes right underneath it. It's very popular with the locals who use it mostly for exercising. The bridge and the area around it are very scenic. Photographers will have plenty to capture.

A beautiful bridge built around the early 1900. It crosses the Rhône and connecting Quai du Dr Gailleton and Quai Claude Bernard. From Quai Claude Bernard you'd come across the University of Lyon 3 Jean Moulin. When you cross to Quai du Dr Gailleton, the first monument you'd see is Fontaine Gailleton. It was lovely crossing this bridge as there was hardly any traffic and you have a good view of the Tony Bertrand swimming pool and across to Pont Guillotière.

The area strong Pont de l'Universite de Lyon is obviously a young crowd. In the evening large groups will gather to enjoy themselves.

The Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière is a 19th-century religious monument in Lyon, France. It features four octagonal towers and houses a museum showcasing religious art. Regular Catholic services are held at the basilica. Visitors can enjoy a romantic evening in Lyon by staying at the Boudoir Spa, which offers luxurious accommodations with amenities such as a Jacuzzi and hammam, providing an ideal setting for special occasions or simply spending quality time together.
You can see the Basilica from almost everywhere in the Lyon old town but it is well worth heading up to see it up close. Take the funicular (walking back down is nice) to get there. The Basilica is in such lovely condition. The murals look amazing and there is a real sense of peacefulness. Make sure you take the time to look closely at the murals. My favourite was the one depicting Joan of Arc. We went on a Saturday morning and it wasn't too busy. We didn't have to wait to go in. It is free to visit. There is a lovely courtyard next to the Basilica where you get some amazing views over Lyon.
Craig C — Google review
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is one of Lyon’s most iconic landmarks, visible from almost anywhere in the city. Personally, I usually find the interiors of Orthodox churches more spiritual, but this basilica’s interior really amazed me — it’s beautiful and inspiring. The exterior is just as impressive, and the panoramic view over Lyon from the top is fantastic. You can get there easily by tram, or hike up if you prefer (which I’d also recommend). Nearby, the Roman Theatre and archaeological site are free to visit and very well preserved. Both the basilica and the ruins are definitely worth seeing.
Dimitris — Google review
Arriving late evening in Lyon, our Uber driver took us here on a quick detour to our hotel ‘because it is so very beautiful, and you guys can see view of Lyon skyline from there’. Indeed it was a beautiful Basilica, majestic even in the dark of night. Indeed it was an impressive view of Lyon. Very grateful of him, blessed his soul. I got the chance to go back the next morning, and although did not got the chance to go inside, my appreciation grew even more about the opportunity to visit. A must go when you are in Lyon. If your hotel is not nearby, they have tram from the city center that stops directly in front.
Milka C — Google review
Lovely place to visit in Lyon. Get a day ticket for € 6.90 and couple of trains later you are there. Beautiful views of the city (sunset as well). Basilica is amazing. Don't compare it with Vatican however it is grand in its own way.
Aleksandar J — Google review
It is a marvelous place to visit even when you are not Christian. The interior of the basilica Notre-Dame of Fourvière in Lyon, is tremendously high. The walls are astonishing and it drops your mouth down to the floor. I have not taken many pictures inside because my eyes were focused on all the tiny details in each stunning things my eyes would lay eyes on. If one thing to visit in Lyon, it clearly is there and Paul Bocuse Market^^.
Anne-Cécile — Google review
What a beautiful basilica one has the pleasure to see, adore and to participate because during our vist a mass was held. The church has an endless history to show, not only in the holy Christian sense but also in its rich architectural designs. A real treat to be there.
Eswiss64 — Google review
Definitely recommend booking a tour to see the rooftop. Amazing view of Lyon. So many gems to see and learn about how the cathedral was built. Who knew so much goes on on the rooftop and top floors of the basilica?
Heidi F — Google review
The basilica can be accessed by foot but we took the funicular up and walked on the way down. It’s a very beautiful place of worship and offers wonderful views of Lyon from the viewing area next to it. It’s also worth visiting the Roman ruins which are a short walk from the basilica.

Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is a renowned food market in Lyon, known for its association with the legendary chef Paul Bocuse. The market offers a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and other gourmet products. It's a popular destination for food enthusiasts and tourists looking to experience authentic Lyonnaise cuisine.
Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is more than just a market; it's a vibrant, sensory feast and an absolute must-visit for any food lover in Lyon. This indoor market is a true testament to Lyon's reputation as the gastronomic capital of France. From the moment you step inside, you're enveloped in the sights, sounds, and aromas of exceptional produce. Stalls groan under the weight of incredible cheeses, charcuterie, freshly baked breads, exquisite pastries, and an impressive array of seafood. You'll find everything from regional specialties to international delicacies, all of the highest quality. What truly sets Les Halles apart is the opportunity to not only shop but also to dine. Numerous small restaurants and counters offer immediate gratification, serving up fresh oysters, Lyonnaise specialties, and gourmet treats right there in the market. It's a fantastic place to sample local flavors, enjoy a leisurely lunch, or simply soak in the lively atmosphere.

The food market in Lyon is truly a food lover’s paradise. Its offering everything from fresh produce and artisanal cheeses to cured meats and pastries. The variety and quality are showcasing the best of French gastronomy.

Such an amazing experience in Lyon. A great representation of the gastronomic history and life of Lyon. Loved all the stories and information about the great chefs and seeing and trying local specialities. I highly recommend doing a private tour. We went with On City Lyon. The guide was knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tastings were fantastic and we had a great time. The markets were busy with rugby fans but our tour meant we had seats and were able to get in and try a number of different local specialities. One of our favourite tours and visits as a couple.
Rosalie B — Google review
Came on a Sunday afternoon at about 1pm and some shops were already beginning to close. Some items can be pricey so we didn't buy much, though it was nice to see the variety of goods being sold. Would be worth coming if you arrive earlier, where you can spend more time exploring the area.
Jonathan C — Google review
How I wish I’d enjoyed this better. There was so little that was gluten free and the vendors weren’t interested in my questions so I never felt anyone understood enough to feel safe eating there. We were starving! Took some ham and cheese & went to the gf bakery and got done bread but by then I was hangry. Tried the risotto which was delightful but I reacted and I don’t have a clue why? It wouldn’t have wheat in it? Loved Dijon market much better.
Cassie G — Google review
The store offers a good selection of different type of food. Saucisson de Lyon Brioché is one of my favourites. We arrived a bit late and thought the stores won’t close until 4pm but most stores closed before 3pm. So we didn’t get chance to explore more and rushed to pick a few items and left. The few items we picked turned out to be a bit pricey comparing to hotel’s buffet breakfast. There is a lot of paid parking available and the parking fee is quite reasonable. Will I come back again next time in Lyon? Maybe.
Joyce L — Google review
Fantastic market with many providers of fine French food. We had a petit dejeuner at La Fer and it was very nice. Pastry came later. Not too crowded early, but the vibe much better later in the day.
Ross — Google review
It’s designed mostly for tourists. Working hours: by 1pm a lot of places were closed. I personally would recommend getting oysters (I also loved their Bullot) at Maison Pupier (Oyster bar) with better prices (you can even order 1 of each oyster kind) and service compared to Chez Antonin (where I got a rude waitress with super expensive oysters that don’t even taste good). Another recommendation is to get lyonnaise delicacy - red praliné tart at Seve (yes it’s expensive).

Bridge
Pont Kitchener Marchand, also known as the Kitchener Marchand Bridge, is a significant bridge in Lyon that spans the Saone River. It connects Quai du Marechal Joffre to Quai des Etroits and Montee de Choulans. The bridge replaced an old wooden structure and provides access to the Perrache district with its nearby station.
It connects Quai du Maréchal Joffre to Quai des Étroits and Montée de Choulans over the Sâone river. Interesting location on the confluence of the Rhône and Sâone river and replaced an old wooden bridge that was once here. This actually takes you to and from the Perrache district with Perrache station nearby. It allows two ways traffic with two sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists. Named after the British Marshal and Minister of War. There's interesting sculptures on the edges but have no information about its origin or history.

A beautiful town hall in Lyon, France. We loved our visit. The architecture is just stunning. It is located in a beautiful square with an amazing fountain and other beautiful buildings. Very historical.
Michael M — Google review
The Hôtel de Ville de Lyon, or Lyon City Hall, is one of the city’s most impressive architectural landmarks—grand, historic, and perfectly situated between Place des Terreaux and the Opéra de Lyon. Built in the 17th century and later restored after a fire, this building is a showcase of French Baroque elegance and civic pride. Its ornate façade, intricate sculptures, and imposing bell tower make it a standout feature of central Lyon. Every detail, from the symmetrical windows to the sculpted allegories and coats of arms, reflects the building’s historic importance and artistic richness. It’s especially stunning when illuminated at night, casting a golden glow over the square.
Wisanu T — Google review

Not open to the public, except for special tours Hôtel de Ville is the city hall of Lyon. It was completed in 1672, designed by architect Simon Maupin. After a fire in 1674, it was rebuilt and modified by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the chief architect of Versailles. Its baroque façade features sculpted figures, grand columns, and a central clock tower originally crowned by a statue of Louis XIV, later replaced with one of Henry IV.

Les Fruits de la Mer (La Maison Rousseau) is a historic seafood restaurant in Lyon, offering a variety of fresh shellfish and seafood dishes. Established in 1906, this unfussy establishment has garnered praise for its friendly service and quick dining experience. Visitors have enjoyed the impeccably cooked seafood platters, featuring oysters, marinated mussels, and the fish of the day.
Friendly, English-speaking waiter showed our son their lobsters during our tour of the food hall and we couldn’t resist returning for an early dinner. The seafood was excellent and service attentive. Pricing reasonable.

We scratched 2 itches at once here..some hot fish soup for my wife on a cold winter day and some world class escargot for me. The soup wasn't exactly a flavor bomb but the addition of shredded cheese and rich aioli pepped it up.. We went here after hearing it was one of the best places to visit in Lyon. When arriving we thought in disbelief, “This is it?”. Half the island and all historical buildings are closed off to the public. What remains is a small, green park and playground that you can walk around in 5 minutes. It is a nice and shaded spot to eat a snack or rest, but that’s it. It’s a four-star small park, but as an attraction it’s one star.

Nice and peaceful island, but not much to do, if you didn't take your lunchbox with you.. the island is really small and half of it is actually closed to the public.. But quite lovely landscapes, I have to admit !

Embarking on the Quentin Walking Tour is a delightful way to explore the charming Vieux Lyon district. Start your journey by making your way to the picturesque Passerelle Saint Georges. Begin at Rue du Boeuf, meandering through its quaint streets until you arrive at the serene banks of the Saone River. From there, take a right and stroll along the river's edge, soaking in the scenic views until you reach the iconic Passerelle Saint Georges bridge.
Quentin is an absolutely fantastic guide! He is so knowledgeable of Lyon, and we learnt so many interesting facts and information. He has an amazing energy, and keeps you engaged the entire tour. He makes it fun and interactive, and takes an interest in each person in the group, even though it is a large group. I highly recommend joining one of his tours, and we would certainly join another tour with Quentin!
Shelley-Ann G — Google review
I had a fantastic walking tour in Lyon with Quentin! The tour lasted a little over 1.5 hours and flew by thanks to his energy, warmth, and great sense of humor. He really knows how to connect with the group, making everyone feel included and entertained with his jokes and stories. Quentin clearly cares about sharing his love for Lyon—he not only explains the history but also brings it to life with a folder of images that illustrate the stories in such a vivid way. I also appreciated how helpful he was, even offering a paper guide at the end so you can keep exploring on your own. If you want a tour that’s fun, informative, and led by someone who truly wants you to understand and enjoy Lyon, I couldn’t recommend Quentin enough!
Clarissa W — Google review
A truly wonderful walking tour in Lyon! Quentin was a great guide that kept things fun and interesting with all the history that he helped us discover. He was very kind and it was clear he's passionate about this beautiful city and sharing it with its visitors. I 100% recommend taking any of the tours he offers. Thank you, Quentin!

I am a tough critic, and this tour blew me out of the water! I have been working as a tour guide for 5 years now, so I have quite high standards, and Quentin is one of the best in the business! Funny, informative, energetic, easy to understand, and excited to answer questions, this tour was one of the highlights of my trip to Lyon. We explored 3 distinct neighborhoods, went inside many traboules, learned about the workers history of Lyon, and more! I would gladly do his other tours and recommend Quentin to anyone visiting Lyon. The walking is a very easy pace, and you're going downhill for the beginning, so it is super easy. You will see lots of amazing architecture, beautiful view points of the city, and super cool street art all around. Quentin makes sure to make everyone feel comfortable, and clearly loves what he does. Thanks for this amazing tour! À bientôt!
Marley B — Google review
This was a wonderful walking tour with so much information on the history of Lyon and the beauty that is obvious but also the beauty hidden behind doors. Quentin was a wealth of knowledge and did an excellent job of keeping it interesting and fun. I highly recommend this tour!

Great tour! Quentin is enthusiastic, funny and knowledgeable. Pace was good for old and young. Clear loud voice (no issues for those with hearing aids). Best way to get a quick overview of Lyon and its history. Communication via What’s App with fast responses to messages and questions

Quentin is a very knowledgeable guide who made the walking tour interesting and fun to be on. I loved the "secret" tunnels we walked through, his sense of humor and the individual care he demonstrated for each member of the group. I highly recommend any tour with Quentin.

Railroad company
SNCF, the French National Railway Company, is a key player in France's extensive rail network. It offers an array of services that connect major cities and regions across the country, making travel convenient and efficient. With high-speed trains like the TGV, passengers can enjoy swift journeys while soaking in picturesque landscapes. SNCF also provides various ticketing options to cater to different budgets and travel preferences.
very bad company, I think they must oversell their tickets. I was on a train today and there was no seats to sit on in 2nd class so we had to stand on the train for 45 minutes. It was so much of a squash with our suitcases that other people felt uncomfortable because there was barely any space to move around. Very bad company in my opinion, the sprinter in the netherlands is a lot better and it has more space
Helen H — Google review
The pass is wonderful in some countries where plenty of train lines link many cities and towns (Netherlands, England) however the pass does become quite useless in others where buses are the only option (Scotland with Scotrail), or when high reservation fees are required and often double if you book late (France with SNCF, Italy with Trenitalia). Sometimes it's actually impossible to make a reservation for a train despite technically selecting a ticket for it (Lyon - Barcelona with AVE). Some trains even depart with empty seats despite attempting to reserve one, but unable due to a limited number of reservations with a Eurail/Interrail Pass allowed (Brussles, Paris - London with Eurostar). Disappointingly no metro transportation is included. Reservation information can be incredibly vague and lack vital information. Customer service aren't very empathetic when their system fails. In my opinion a €2 online booking fee should be all that is needed to make a seat reservation when required (unless it is a sleeper train requiring bed/food service), buses should be included in this when there are no trains (in app bus bookings with €2 fee), and all metro trains, trams and buses should be included. Eurail started in 1959, it's nearly 2024, with the technology available Interrail/Eurail shouldn't be this disappointing and dysfuntional to use. I'd much rather be a customer of a proper functioning rail service with one main function, than a dysfunctional one which many hidden costs but includes a bunch of the odd discounts that you can search for and potentially apply while being a pass holder.

Always some problems with this train, even now I’m writing this because the train for no reason stood in the middle of nowhere in the Christmas night, and people waiting 2 hours and can’t get home. Very bad train company. 0 of 5 stars.

It is a very nice bridge for it is possible to behold the Rhone river very peacefully, wind sometimes rocks the bridge and the structure squeaks a little, it sounds frightening when one hears it by the very first time yet the structure is very safe and I found it amusing at the end of the day; the view is beautiful and snapshots are too.
