Matsumoto-jō Castle, located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is a 16th-century national treasure with striking black walls. Visitors can explore historical weapons exhibits and climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and snow-capped mountains. The castle grounds are adorned with maple and cherry trees, making it a popular spot for viewing red leaves and cherry blossoms in early November. The castle offers evening lighting events until 22:00.
Gorgeous castle both in the day and at night. Suggested buying timed tickets in advance else you'll need to line up (it was 100 minutes on the day we were there), but we just walked through, scanned and were in the castle within a few minutes. Once inside its a museum of sorts with displays of weapons the castle was designed to protect against (flint lock etc) and although it was busy if you wanted to read the displays simply allow people to go ahead of you and enjoy your own pace. We really enjoyed it!

It is one of Japan's premier historic castles. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan. Completed in the late sixteenth century, it maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is a flatland castle. Lots of people here, careful with personal belongings. Very popular place. Plenty to see inside and outside. Wear comfy shoes, hat, sunscreen, take water. While outside is even terrain and easy walking, inside you have lot of steep stairs and crowds. Headroom is limited on some stairs. Fee charged for entry. Great place for photography. Lovely museum exhibits at each level
S V — Google review
Truly a national treasure. This castle has been on my wishlist for so long. Visited on sunday 19 Oct. Even from the outer area you can feel the magnificent of this castle, beautiful and elegant castle. The stairs inside is steep and narrow, do it slowly and carefuly as to not hit your head to one of its wood beam. Also I had the chance to watched the live firearms show afterwards, its really cool, feels like going back to 1600s Sengoku jidai era. I enjoyed my visit to this castle, thank you.
Mario K — Google review
Last year, I visited Matsumoto Castle, and it was an incredible experience rich in history and culture. Standing before the majestic black-and-white fortress, I could truly feel the spirit of Japan’s samurai era. The castle’s elegant design, surrounded by a serene moat and distant mountains, creates a perfect harmony between strength and beauty. Inside, the wooden interiors and steep staircases tell stories of centuries past. It’s not just a castle—it’s a living piece of Japan’s heritage. A must-visit for anyone who loves history and tradition! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Emir K — Google review
Visually impressive from the outside, stunning architecture and layout. Dissapointingly dull on the inside! Other than a display of weapons there is precious little explanation of the castle's background, how people lived or the evolution. Very good volunteer guides but they are not allowed to enter the castle itself. Feels like a wasted opportunity for an immersive historical experience
JT — Google review
The castle is absolutely gorgeous, and the surrounding grounds and gardens are beautifully maintained. It’s also very easy to get to. Unfortunately, on this visit I didn’t get to see the inside, as the wait time was 80 minutes. It’s a shame, but as with many popular spots here in Japan, there are simply too many tourists for you to really enjoy it to the fullest. Still, it’s well worth the trip.
David A — Google review
Beautiful great free grounds to walk all the way around it fires cost to go inside we choose not to. There were a-lot of people here. They had a flower display on sure which was really neat as well
Breena D — Google review
Beautiful Castle, but limited interior experience Matsumoto Castle is absolutely stunning from the outside, living up to its "Crow Castle" reputation. It's truly picturesque, especially with the moat and the mountains in the background. However, the interior tour is quite sparse in terms of exhibits. If you don't enjoy climbing very steep, original wooden stairs, you might prefer just walking the beautiful grounds and enjoying the exterior views (which are free). Still a must-see for the architecture!

Museums
The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is a must-visit landmark in the city, alongside the famous Matsumoto Castle. This museum is dedicated to artists associated with Nagano Prefecture and offers an immersive experience into the world of Yayoi Kusama, a renowned contemporary artist born in Matsumoto. Even before entering the museum, visitors are greeted by the impressive outdoor sculpture 'The Visionary Flowers,' which leaves a lasting impression.
I truly enjoyed my time at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art. The museum is located in the city center, just a few minutes’ walk from Matsumoto Castle and Matsumoto City Museum – making all combined a great day-trip itinerary coming from Tokyo. In this museum I first learn that Yayoi Kusama is originally from Matsumoto. The museum itself is designed in Kusama’s spirit with her art at the front of the museum and her famous red dots covering the windows. The museum has a number of floors, mostly showing local / other art by different artists. The highlight for me was Kusama’s special gallery at the top floor – taking the visitor on a journey through Kusama’s life, and the different phases she went through and created in. The gallery showed beautiful art created by Kusama across different genres (paintings, statues, mirror-rooms and more). Lastly, the museum also has an external garden where you can sit and relax during your visit to the venue. Overall, this is a great museum and I had a great time visiting it and learning more about Matsumoto and specifically about Kusama. I highly recommend to visit this place when you visit Matsumoto.
Adam S — Google review
A small but very beautiful museum with a collection of art from Yayoi Kusama herself. While you can’t take photos inside (except for one area), the grounds themselves are beautiful with a cafe and an amazing gift shop. I highly recommend it if you have 1-2 hours to spare.
Moriah — Google review
Great experience for the work of Yayoi Kusama. The museum is recommended as the best place in Japan to witness Yayoi's work (Matsumoto is her place of birth). The interactive part is memorable (photos and videos not allowed in these rooms, hence no media added to my post on these aspects). I would say 30-60min are enough to visit the museum - there are some other areas besides Yoyoi's rooms. I would have liked more Yayoi's merchandise in the shop. Definitely a must-see in Matsumoto!
Japonaisseur — Google review
Great for Yayoi Kusama Fans, but a small museum. We came specifically to see the permanent Yayoi Kusama collection, which is excellent (don't miss the stunning outdoor pieces!). The entrance fee is very reasonable/affordable. However, the overall museum space is quite small. The exhibition area is limited, so there isn't a huge amount of content to see outside of the main Kusama works. It's a quick visit, but definitely worth it if you are a fan of her art!
Awanafan — Google review
Well worth visiting for the Yusama exhibits and installations alone. JPY800 to enter and they have a great gift shop and cafe too. There are not many places within the gallery that you can take photos, but that doesn’t really matter as it’s a memorable experience.
Lex L — Google review
I love museum. This one is pretty tiny, but have everything in it. And if you are a big fan of Yayoi ..... YES this place is talk about her and show her old and new art.
Denise C — Google review
So fun to see the museum that honors Kusama. We were just in Naoshima 10 days ago, home to her yellow pumpkin and hollow red pumpkin. The installations she created at this museum are extraordinary. There was also a fabulous exhibition of Japanese contemporary artists that we thoroughly enjoyed.
Annabel G — Google review
Have a great great time here !!! Merchandises created by many artists are available to collect. And there is a very sweet and warm cafe located in the museum area.

Former Kaichi School, built in 1876, is one of Japan's oldest elementary school buildings and now serves as an education museum. The Western-influenced design with Japanese elements like the roof over the main entrance and dragon carvings make it a unique sight. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring old artworks, chairs, tables, and other educational artifacts from the Edo period to modern times for a glimpse into Japan's educational history.
I think whether a place is a city of culture or not depends on the type of lord who ruled it in the past. I think the reason why Matsumoto, Nagano has such high academic ability is because the lord originally believed that "education is important." Education is the most important thing in life as a human being.

As western people, this was les interesting. This school is built according to Western architecture, but with the building techniques they were familiar with. You learn a lot about the architecture of the building and you can feel how proud people are and were with the building, but I was hoping to learn more about the school system and educational methods. Also not everything was in English, we had to use Google translate a lot. Definitely take a sweater here because it is quite cold inside. We went in spring.
CHOCOxMOES — Google review
Excellent heritage site. Love to see the significance of this ex school in the past progressing the development of japan during meiji era. Residential area and surrounding of the school are lovely and tranquil and its a journey by itself. Entrance fee are very reasonable around 300-500¥
H W — Google review
A historical place where the European missionaries setup school for the local children. The architecture is a mixture of European design with some Asian sculptures. The school is temporary closed for refurbishment. It's next to the local central library and a short walk from the castle.
Won L — Google review
It was interesting to see and read about the history of the school and the building. As I am a foreign tourist, I would have appreciated more descriptions in English.
Douglas C — Google review
Really interesting historic building right in Matsumoto close to the castle. There isn't a huge amount of English but it seemed that the key points of the building and materials were translated into English as well which was very helpful. The building itself is a beautiful combination of Japanese construction and western aesthetics that makes for a really interesting tour around the school. They do make you take off your shoes and put on school slippers, just a heads up.
Duke E — Google review
Had a great time there! To be fair, it built up with some fun interactions with locals, but the museum itself is quite interesting. In hindsight there wasn't really that much, still I managed to spend over an hour in that. Has a quite lovely feel to it.

Museums
The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, located in Matsumoto City, is home to a vast and significant collection of ukiyo-e artworks. Many of these pieces are currently on display at a special exhibition hosted by the Matsumoto City Museum. The museum features works by renowned artist Hokusai Katsushika, including famous pieces like The Great Wave Off Kanagawa and Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
Like many messages said here, this is not a big museum or a big gallery. Many art works were not even the original one. But, the visitors all seemed to enjoy their staying. They paid attention to these paintings quietly. Also, you can find English description in most paintings, covering not only the name of the painting, but also the story of the painting.
CS K — Google review
This museum is tough to recommend for its normally displayed collection, which is tiny (by tiny, I mean 30 pieces max). It's also not easy to get to, being a 15-20 minute walk from the nearest train station and buses aren't much better. As such, if you're going to visit I recommend seeing what the special collection is that they have on display - their special collections take up their main display room, which is 3x the size of the rest of the museum. If the special collection is not to your taste, I would not recommend visiting. If it is however (or if you have access to a car and can make the journey without depending on the limited public transit options, it is a charming building with a very good gift shop - there are a number of prints done via woodblock techniques if you're looking for one (plus a lot of other ukiyo-e-related gifts that I haven't seen anywhere else in Japan). In the end I'll give it four stars for the quality of their special collection curation, the format shop, and decent AC on a hot day... just be warned it might not tick all of your ukiyo-e boxes.
G. C — Google review
Excellent little museum with a peerless collection of ukiyo-e prints and a solid gift shop. Good explanatory video running and helpful staff. The pieces in show are low in number due to the size of the gallery and to help conserve them due to light/oil exposure. TIP: transit does not easily get you here without a car. Use Uber or equivalent to get legit taxis to and from!
Phil S — Google review
Very nice museum and the walk from the train station is peaceful and beautiful in itself worth the trip. If you appreciate traditional Japanese art worth a stop. There's a 30 min video supposedly available also in English explaining how wood prints are made, just watching the craftsmanship was super interesting
Maya S — Google review
Small but informative. There's a video covering the process and a little of the history, and then a room with a collection of prints with information in English and Japanese. A shuttle bus runs to and from the area on the alps side of Matsumoto JR station and there are two train lines within walking distance.
Kai D — Google review
The museum looks big from the outside, but it's just one room with maybe 150 or so works. The exhibit is rotated often. If it wasn't for the 500 yen student ticket, I would be a little annoyed at the price.
Max K — Google review
Hard to recommend a visit to this museum: it's quite hard to get to without a car / taxi, and it's deceptively small. The exhibit was interesting, but we felt it lacked displays of the unique & elaborate process & equipment behind Ukiyo-e.
Sam W — Google review
The museum has ¥100 discount for seniors, regardless of nationality. The paintings in the exhibition hall are all duplicated works, not authentic, and only Mr. utagawa’s paintings are the main. I found some painting books on The resting area, I think it’s worthless to come here, go to library and you will have more fun to study Ukiyoe.

The Matsumoto Timepiece Museum is a contemporary gallery that houses an extensive collection of working clocks and watches from various time periods. Established in 1974 with a donation of antique clocks and timepieces, the museum offers an introduction to the history of watches and showcases over a thousand timepieces dating back to the sixteenth century.
My interest in watches and clock bought me to this place. I like the collections and how it was presented. Thank you.
Alfred P — Google review
A very interesting place, especially if you're into clocks. It's a small but well-maintained collection of clocks, as well as exhibits that go over the history of timekeeping. The clocks are organized by both historical era and area of origin.
Edwin L — Google review
This is a small but very charming museum for anyone interested in timepieces in general and the history of Japanese clocks in particular. Exhibits range from watches to very large clocks, with quite a few very distinctive and quirky examples. There is also a room of phonographs. I enjoyed this immensely - particularly the sound to ticking, because all the clocks seemed to be working. Great value!
Sean W — Google review
Cute little museum with some interesting history and many well preserved (and functional!) watches and clocks from various periods.
Josh F — Google review
Nice and cozy small clocks and watches museum. You can spend time approx 30-60 min here. Enjoy seeing the many types of clocks and watches here.
Gorawich K — Google review
We went there on a rainy day. It’s small but worth the fees. Worth a visit for those interested in clocks and watches. Almost all the exhibits are working and there are some truly interesting pieces with gramophone live session.
Mugdha G — Google review
Interesting place to add to your Matsumoto itinerary. You could spend more or less an hour here before heading to Matsumoto Castle. You can see interesting clocks and most have English descriptions on them. I think all of the time pieces are still working. So you'll definitely learn something to your visit here
Frances Y — Google review
Sweet little museum in Matsumoto. Make sure you get inside 10-15 minutes before round hour, because most clocks here ring! Some of the special ones do really weird things, so make sure to look around and go around between them when they ring.

Nakamachi Dori is a charming street known for its traditional black and white Namako-Kabe design on the buildings, giving it a unique aesthetic appeal. Many of the old storehouses along this street, some dating back over a century, have been repurposed into shops, restaurants, bars, and museums. One notable attraction is the Scale Museum, which offers discounted entry to holders of the Town Sneaker One Day Pass ticket.

A unique museum on measuring instruments. They have a fascinating and educational collection of instruments such as scales and weights that takes you back in time. The buildings and the garden are lovely as well.

This was a nice place to visit. The staff was so super nice and explained things if I had a question. The different scales were actually interesting to see. The interactive areas were cool too. It was a nice place to explore while walking in the area.

An interesting small museum of measures and scales. You find an innovative idea of counting tiny parts accurately using a scale for instance.

(Translated by Google) It stands on a section of Nakamachi Street lined with plasterwork, so I almost passed by it. It is said that Matsumoto City has the largest number of museums in Japan, but if this is included in the number, it is a small museum that would be inflated. In addition to the scale exhibition space, there are two outbuildings in the garden at the back, one of which is used as a space to introduce silkworm farming, and the other is just an outbuilding (Japanese-style room) There is only a Western-style room and there is nothing on display.) Well, it's 200 yen, which is cheaper than other museums, so I'd say it's worth the price. (Translated by Google) As the name suggests, this facility has a variety of scales on display. A quick look will take about 10 to 20 minutes, but the admission fee is only 200 yen. The building is undeniably old, but not so much that it bothers me. Scales of various shapes are on display. There are some explanations of how to use and applications, but they do not go into much depth. However, it is recommended for people who enjoy seeing a variety of things. It was also OK to take pictures as long as you didn't use a flash. The road in front of us is one-way, but community buses also run and there is a bus stop right in front of us. Nakamachi Kurassic-kan, also known as the Tairei Sake Brewery, is a collection of well-preserved Meiji-era buildings located in the heart of Nakamachi Street. The complex features traditional wooden beam structures surrounding a charming Japanese garden and inner courtyard with a hand-pumped well. When you step into the dirt floor and look up, you can see the horizontal beams and pillars built into the thick beams, catching the light from the skylight and creating a stunning appearance. The Old Catholic Priest's House is sparsely furnished, but offers an intriguing glimpse into a genuine 19th century residence. Admission is free and it is conveniently located near the castle, adjacent to the Kaichi School. Taking a quick walk-through provides visitors with a valuable insight into the history of this authentic home. There are not many objects on display, but its impressive Western architecture makes up for that. When I visited in February, just before closing time, there were no people around.
beautiful!

Quaint house with a nice old, nostalgic feel. Good for a stop when visiting the Kaichi School to learn insight into some history of Matsumoto.

The house is barely furnished, but it's interesting to see a genuine 19th century home. Admission is free and it's not far from the castle. It's next door to the Kaichi School. It's worth a quick walk-through to get a sense of a real historical home.

Not that many items inside. Nice Western architecture. I did not see a single person during my visit (February, right before the closing time). There were some brochures/visitor booklets for places around Matsumoto on the first floor by the entrance.

An interesting look at Western architecture in Japan at the time, however this exhibit is small, unmanned, and fairly sparse. There's an average of one piece of furniture for every room in the building.

Nestled in the heart of Matsumoto, the Matsumoto Marunouchi Hotel is a luxurious retreat that perfectly blends comfort and convenience. With its tastefully decorated rooms, this upscale hotel offers an inviting atmosphere for travelers seeking relaxation after exploring the vibrant city. Guests can enjoy delightful dining experiences at one of the four refined restaurants on-site or unwind with bike rentals to discover local attractions like Matsumoto Castle and Yohashira Shrine, both just a stone's throw away.
Very thoughtful hotel. Every part of the room is very well designed and well thought out. You can see the recommendation cards explaining the amenities throughout the room, I love that. The complimentary mineral water bottles in the room is very kind. We appreciate that. The water pressure for shower and bath is fantastic. Hotel location is perfect, short walks to our choicest restaurants and Matsumoto castle. We went to the castle both day and night and got great photos. Wonderful breakfast selections, they used quality ingredients and cooked them very well. Salad bar is plentiful,I especially loved the stir-fried mushrooms. So delicious and healthy. The breakfast room is gorgeous, it really made the experience all the more special. Above all, the staff in every department of Matsumoto Marunouchi hotel are really kind and helpful. They all made us felt very welcomed. Thank you very much.

This hotel is definitely a three star, not a four star. They didn’t help with our bags when we arrived. The rooms are old and a bit stuffy. The location is great and the breakfast was very good. The amenities were very basic.

We had a truly wonderful stay at this hotel in Matsumoto. The location was perfect, centrally located and very convenient for exploring the area. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived. The rooms were comfortable and the overall experience made our time in Matsumoto even more enjoyable. The staff deserve a very special mention. Everyone we met was kind, professional, and went out of their way to help. I would especially like to thank the young woman with the trainee badge. She was doing such an amazing job, so polite, and made us feel so welcome. I would also like to thank the receptionist who assisted us with our luggage transfer. Our suitcases were around 30kg each, and without their help the process would have been overwhelming. They were so efficient and thoughtful, and we are incredibly grateful. Thank you so much for your hospitality, it made all the difference to our trip.

We had a great stay at this hotel in Matsumoto. The location was perfect - 5 min walk to the Castle, 5 min walk to Nawate Street riverside market, 12 min to Kusama Art museum. The hotel is near a main street and there is no view from the rooms but it is quiet. The atmosphere was warm and front desk staff extremely helpful. The rooms were comfortable. The breakfast buffet was great and we loved the ambience in that room.

This hotel is very clean and comfortable, and quite nicely located near Matsumoto station, an easy walk or bus ride for those less mobile. The highlight of my stay however, was the extremely impressive display of professionalism by the front desk staff, who went so far beyond their official duties in helping to get me a taxi the next day. They spent around 30 minutes calling taxi companies even though the morning I was trying to get one was very busy, and the taxi they ended up getting me was even cheaper than the one I originally had wanted. It’s no exaggeration to say this is the best front desk service I’ve ever received in my entire life.

This hotel has a superb location, literally 3mim walk from Matsumoto castle. I would say this is its strongest quality. The rooms are OK although a little on the small side and have an old feeling. Breakfast was simply OK. Overall I would recommend staying here if you are staying one single day in Matsumoto to see the castle.

Great hotel 5 minute walk from the castle. Excellent and friendly staff, great breakfast and well appointed rooms. We loved our stay in Matsumoto. Hot tip: visit the soba restaurant next to the temple for delicious soba.

The is very well located hotel within walking distance of the castle. Unfortunately, the on-site car parking wasn’t in the hotel so we had to park a little way away. The rooms are immaculately clean but as usual in most Japanese hotels quite small. The bed was very comfortable. The big buffet breakfast is served in an amazing function room that is worth seeing.

Hayashi Castle Ruins, initially known as Fukashi Castle, was built in 1504 to protect the Ogasawara Clan. After being reclaimed by the clan in 1582, it was renamed Matsumoto Castle. The castle offers a panoramic view of Matsumotodaira and features well-preserved earthworks and stone masonry. Visitors can explore the area's trenches and defensive structures while enjoying scenic views of Shiroyama.
(Translated by Google) Hayashi Castle was built by the Ogasawara clan between 1440 and 1460, and in 1550, before the invasion of the Takeda clan from Kai, the castle fell without any attack or defense. Nowadays, it is considered to be a castle ruin related to the Ogasawara clan and is a national historic site along with Ojo. The rest area in the middle of the ruins of the main fort is now unusable. Also, the ground is slippery so you should be careful ⚠️If you have any questions, please ask! The ruins of Great Hayashi Castle span one mountain in a larger frond-like typographic chain of moutains and castles. To the east of Hayashiohjō is Mizubanjō and to the west is Hayashikojō, Lesser Hayashi Castle. Between are gently sloping valleys with terraced fields and homes. On my way to Hayashiohjō I could see both the greater and lesser mounts together from the plain. The layout of Hayashiohjō makes it easy to explore. Starting at the trail head one climbs up the initial face of the mountain foot via some switchbacks. It was here that I was climbing when from overhead several rocks came tumbling down. I looked up and saw a family of Kamoshika (Japanese goatalopes / serow) sprinting across the mountain slope. They put some distance between me and them and then began to look back at me. Eventually calming down they began their usual routine of snuffling about in the fallen leaves for stuff to eat and eventually ambled on out of sight. The castle structure follows the mountain ridge, being perforated by horikiri (trenches). All the way up the mountain is terraced to either side of the main path, with gate ruins and trenches separating clusters of dozens of sub-baileys in each segment. The higher up the more numerous these many terraced enclosures. At the top of the mount are two large baileys, separated by a trench system with gate remains. The shukuruwa (main bailey) is ringed with dorui (earthen embankments). On the inside of this dorui there are traces and segments of ishiźumi (stone-pilings). In one place the dorui is broken up by a koguchi (tiger's maw gate) ruin. Beyond the shurukuwa is a sizable rear bailey. These uppermost integral baileys are ensconced with several layers of ring baileys. A path leads down from one of them to the "princess's make-up well", below which one can see a double trench although it was difficult to photograph. The autumn foliage at Hayashi Castle was particularly charming.

(Translated by Google) The area around the main wall had been cleared on a large scale, and something like cork had been laid down, and it was in good condition. Although the rest area is dangerous and off-limits, it has a pretty nice atmosphere. I'm looking forward to the future. Some signboards have collapsed, and there are two fallen trees on the path from Kinka Bridge. It's still one more step. There are horikiri and flat fields between the first gate and the main building, but there are no signboards or anything like that. I think it could become a wonderful park if it was improved in various ways. So far, even the children from Yamabe Elementary School, just below, are not climbing the mountain. I have no choice but to say that it is wasteful.

(Translated by Google) Hayashidai Castle, along with the neighboring Hayashiko Castle across the valley, are designated as national historic sites. Hayashidai Castle is 846m above sea level, with a relative height of about 230m from the foot of the mountain. Currently, a forest road has been developed, and it is very convenient to drive up to the main castle. Hayashidai Castle's main and second baileys are well-maintained and easy to visit. The main bailey is protected by earthworks, and some stonework remains. However, compared to other castles of the Ogasawara clan, there are only a few stone walls. The area around the main bailey is protected by moats and vertical moats. Like other castles of the Ogasawara clan, countless small baileys are lined up in a stepped structure at the bottom. According to the layout map, Hayashidai Castle has the largest number of small baileys. I wonder if the houses of the vassals were lined up there in the past. However, when I visited at the end of June, the small baileys were overgrown and I could hardly see them. Unfortunately, most of the area was overgrown, and it was not a very memorable castle. Hayashi Castle was built in the Muromachi period. During the Sengoku period, the Ogasawara clan, which had been divided into the three clans of Fuchu, Matsuo, and Suzuoka, was reunited by the Fuchu Ogasawara clan, who moved their main castle from Ikawa Castle to Hayashi Castle. In 1550, the Takeda clan invaded Shinano, and after Hanihara Castle fell, the Ogasawara clan fled from Hayashi Castle without a fight. I booked a few days in advance, so I could only book a room without meals, but when I called, they were happy to accommodate my request for additional meals. When I arrived on the day, the sliding door at the entrance was so heavy that I thought it might be closed, so I hesitated for about 20 minutes before entering. lol The exterior looked even older than the photos on the website, so I was quite nervous, but when I entered the room, it was very clean and comfortable. However, rather than renovating more than necessary, the unnecessary parts were left as they were. It is an existing representative of modern Japanese-style architecture from the Meiji period, and is the only Japanese-style court in Japan that has completely preserved its internal and external forms. Another building, "Gongyado Horaiya", was built around the late Edo period and is listed as an important cultural property of Matsumoto City. It is a tourist guest house built in the Kawaura settlement (Nagawa, Matsumoto City) along the Nogi Street connecting Matsumoto and Takayama. From the Meiji period to the Taisho period, many working girls from Gifu Prefecture and other places going to Suwa and Okaya rice mill rice mills used this place as an accommodation. Being inside feels like traveling back in time to ancient Japan hundreds of years ago. The stoves, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. are all built with solid wood. You must take off your shoes when visiting the Bora House. The daytime temperature was about 0 degrees Celsius, and my feet almost turned into popsicles. However, it was still so completely preserved, which I found incredible. The "former Matsumoto Juvenile Penal Institution Solitary House" is a solitary dormitory of the Juvenile Penal Institution built in the 15th year of Taisho (1926). It has a history of nearly a hundred years. It was previously used to house juvenile prisoners and pending inmates. You can visit it inside An indescribable feeling. There is also a "Kawashima Yoshiko Memorial Room" in the "Exhibition and Relaxation Building". Kawashima Yoshiko was born as a royal daughter of the Qing Dynasty, and later became the adopted daughter of Matsumoto Kawashima Naniwa. There are well-known celebrities such as "Joan Arc of Japan" and "Beautiful Men's Clothes". The title is partially related to Matsumoto Yoshiko. The museum displays relevant information about Yoshiko Kawashima. There are also historic sites such as the "Ku Showa Kogye Rice Noodles Factory" and the Kinoshita Najie Family. Because Matsumoto City's Shinosato is not in the busy and dense tourist area in front of Matsumoto Station, there are fewer people visiting. Because of this, it is more convenient to take pictures. If you have enough time, it is recommended to come and have a look. The History Center is located next to the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum. It is recommended that you visit both museums together. The ticket price is about 400 yen, and you can get a 100 yen discount when you purchase the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum ticket with the ticket stub (original price is 1,000 yen) Business hours: 9:00~17:00 (last entry time 16:30) Closed every Monday and 12/29-1/3 Transportation: By train - Take the Matsumoto Electric Railway Kamikochi Line to "Oba Station" and walk for 15 minutes. By bus - Take the Town Sneaker West Route from Matsumoto Station for a long trip and get off at "Ukiyoe Museum·Historical Sato".

There is no heating facility, so it's best to wear warm clothes in the middle of winter. Get 100 yen off at the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum next door with your ticket stub. (Translated by Google) 2023/10 weekday visit The former Matsumoto District Court was relocated and preserved. There are many explanations that are helpful. In addition to the courthouse, the grounds include a prison, a silk mill, and exhibits related to great historical figures, so you can spend about 2 hours looking around. I think the parking lot can accommodate about 30 cars for free. Personally, I felt there was a lot to see. It is a hidden gem in Matsumoto, and when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, the wooden courthouse building and the cherry blossoms look very beautiful. There are also exhibits about how trials were conducted in the past, including materials from buildings in Matsumoto City that are classified as cultural properties. You can also experience the solitary confinement cells of the old juvenile prison and learn about the conditions in which children were incarcerated at the time. The spinning mill where silk thread is spun has a well-maintained house and machinery. Although it does not move, it is in a tasteful state of storage. (Translated by Google) There's something cool about Jitte. It feels more romantic than a sword ☺️ A building that combines Japanese and Western styles. The basics are Western style. The ceiling at the entrance is Western-style, but the ceiling inside is Japanese-style. In the past, the courthouse and prosecutor's office were located in the same building. That's why it's difficult to be innocent.

Agetsuchi is a cozy and welcoming café in town where you can enjoy delicious yet affordable coffee. The friendly atmosphere and heartwarming hospitality make it a place where you might end up staying longer than planned. It's not ideal for those seeking solitude, but if you're looking for a charming place to relax and enjoy good coffee with friendly people, Agetsuchi is worth a visit.
Really friendly people there and a charming place to stay for a drink :)

(Translated by Google) A community cafe you can easily stop by It was crowded with locals (^-^) The atmosphere of the building is good. Is it under the direct control of Matsumoto City? You can have it at a reasonable price without being too formal (^-^) On this day, the Japanese sweets in the Japanese sweets set were out of stock (Japanese sweet shop had a good night!), so we had to change the menu at short notice. ¥500 If you're here for sightseeing, it might be a good idea to gather information from the locals. (Translated by Google) A very cozy coffee shop! The ice cream drink set is a great deal. My favorite second-hand book cafe, Soundo, postponed its opening hours and I was disappointed. I ended up at Agetachi, which is diagonally opposite. Apparently they've been renting space on the first floor of the former civic hall and running the cafe for 13 years. By the way, Pensee Komatsu's milk bread has gone up in price again. I managed to buy one for just 500 yen. Komatsu's milk bread was 280 yen for a long time, but once they started raising the price I couldn't stop.
