Charming public square in Montepulciano -- go up into the tower of the Palazzo Comunale for one of the best views of the Valdichiana

Beautiful historical center of the central. Must visit day and evening.
Mike A — Google review
Piazza Grande is the must-see place in Montepulciano. It must be said that it is well worth it, as it is located at the very top of the village, itself situated on a particularly steep rocky ridge ... You have been warned! But once you reach the top, the square reveals its riches and appears truly impressive. In fact, it houses the town's cathedral, a Renaissance-style palace copied from the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence, the Palazzo Comunale, built on the remains of medieval buildings. A well, also Renaissance, topped with a sculpted arch decorated with animals, adds a touch of elegance to this ensemble !

Piazza Grande in Montepulciano may be small, but it’s truly a Tuscan gem. It offers a stunning view of the historic town hall, surrounded by charming Renaissance buildings, and from the square, you can wander into the quaint, atmospheric streets typical of this beautiful region. A must-visit for lovers of history, architecture, and wine alike — Montepulciano will surely capture your heart.

Piazza Grande is the heart of Montepulciano, a stunning medieval square surrounded by Renaissance architecture, including the Palazzo Comunale and Duomo of Montepulciano. Its origins date back to the 14th century, and it has long been a symbol of civic pride and Tuscan elegance. Film fans will recognize it as a key location in Twilight: New Moon, where the dramatic Volturi scenes were shot - adding a cinematic layer to its timeless beauty. Whether you're here for the history or the Hollywood connection, Piazza Grande is a must-see in southern Tuscany.

Montepulciano is a medieval hilltop town in Tuscany, Italy. Surrounded by vineyards, it’s known for its vino nobile red wine. The Torre di Pulcinella is a clock tower topped by a figure of the Pulcinella, a commedia dell’arte character. On the Piazza Grande is the 14th-century Palazzo Comunale, with a tower offering views of the surrounding countryside. Also here is the Duomo, with a huge triptych above its altar.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio is a 16th-century domed church located in Montepulciano, Italy. The church overlooks the picturesque countryside and is surrounded by cypress-lined roads. Visitors can take a leisurely walk through Montepulciano, admiring historical palaces, churches, and Renaissance artwork along the main street.
In the heart of Tuscany, nestled among the rolling hills and vineyards, lies the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio. This ancient church is perched atop a hill, overlooking the quaint town of Montepulciano, and has been a place of pilgrimage and worship for centuries. Legend has it that the sanctuary was built in the early 16th century after a shepherd boy had a vision of the Virgin Mary on this very spot. The boy claimed that she appeared to him in a bright light and spoke to him, telling him to build a church in her honor. The shepherd boy, along with the help of the townspeople, constructed the sanctuary, and it has been a sacred place ever since. As you approach the sanctuary, the first thing you notice is the grand staircase leading up to the entrance. The steps are made of marble and adorned with intricate carvings of angels and saints. At the top of the staircase, two massive wooden doors stand tall, welcoming all who come to visit. Once inside, the beauty of the sanctuary takes your breath away. The walls are painted in soft pastel colors, and the ceiling is adorned with elaborate frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. The altar is the centerpiece of the church, with a statue of the Madonna di San Biagio standing proudly in the center. The statue is said to have miraculous healing powers, and many come to pray for loved ones who are sick or in need of help. The sanctuary is also home to a small chapel, where visitors can light candles and offer prayers. The walls of the chapel are lined with small plaques, each one a testament to a prayer answered. The atmosphere is one of peace and tranquility, and it is easy to see why people come from all over the world to seek solace in this sacred place. As you wander around the sanctuary, you can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The intricate details of the architecture, the beautiful artwork, and the peaceful atmosphere all come together to create a truly special place. It is no wonder that the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio has become a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. As the sun sets over the Tuscan countryside, the sanctuary takes on a whole new level of beauty. The warm glow of the setting sun illuminates the church, making it look as if it is glowing from within. It is a sight that will stay with you forever. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio is not just a church; it is a sacred place that holds a special meaning for all who visit. It is a place of peace, hope, and faith, and it will continue to be a beacon of light for generations to come.

Magnificent sanctuary of Renaissance art built between 1518 and 1545, made of blond stone and with harmonious lines, is attributed to Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, one of the finest architects of the period. The Temple of San Bagio was built away from the city, in a verdant valley, on the site of an ancient early Christian church dedicated to Mary. This location, in the heart of a superb landscape, underscores its grandeur. The origins of this church are linked to a miraculous event that occurred on April 23, 1518, when two servants, Antilia and Camilla, and a peasant named Toto, passing by a fresco depicting the Virgin and Child and Saint Francis, saw the Virgin open and close her eyes, as if she were alive. The central Greek cross plan of the Temple is crowned by a dome on a drum. The architecture of the bell tower plays on alternating forms : decreasing heights, straight lines and curves ; it is topped by an eight-sided pyramid. The solemn interior houses, near the high altar, a lectern made by Giannozzo and Lisandro di Pietro Albertini in 1584, as well as, in the niches, statues of saints sculpted by Ottaviano Lazzarini in 1617. Pope Leo X himself came to inaugurate this monumental church, conceived as an ancient temple, and considered one of the most accomplished achievements of Christian architecture of the Tuscan Renaissance. The presbytery in front of the church was also designed by Sangallo and built around 1550 and is characterized by a double loggia. The well in front of the building was erected between 1550 and 1551 and originally had two columns with a travertine architrave. In short, a 16th-century Tuscan masterpiece not to be missed during a visit to Montepulciano.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio (Tempio di San Biagio) is a truly charming and peaceful place. We didn’t go inside as there was a €5 entrance fee, but even from the entrance area, the beauty of the structure and its surroundings was clear. The view over the Tuscan hills is absolutely stunning and adds to the special atmosphere of the site. Parking was simple and accessible, making the visit smooth and pleasant. A lovely and worthwhile stop, even for a short visit.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio is absolutely stunning and a must-visit when in Montepulciano! This Renaissance masterpiece is over 500 years old, and standing before it, you can truly feel the weight of that incredible history. The church’s architecture is breathtaking – from its elegant travertine facade to its perfectly proportioned design, it’s a testament to the artistry and devotion of another era. The setting is equally magnificent, sitting gracefully just outside the town with beautiful views of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a moment of peace and reflection, this sanctuary delivers on every level. Don’t miss this gem – it’s one of those places that reminds you why Tuscany is so special. An unforgettable experience!
Danny V — Google review
The admission to the church is 3.5 euros, and it includes a 20 minutes audio guide, which is well worth it. If you stand in the middle of the circle on the ground and clap, only you would hear it echos back for 20 times :)
Anh N — Google review
We had opted for the little red golf cart Montepulciano tour and unfortunately our first stop was right when the church had closed, so rather than be smug about it, we bellied up to the little cafe/bar on the corner and enjoyed the views from outside. Another amazing church in Italy.

Cathedral Saint Mary Of The Assumption

Cathedral Saint Mary of the Assumption, located in Piazza Grande, is a must-see attraction in Montepulciano. The cathedral features an impressive interior with notable artworks such as the 'Madonna del Pilastro' by Sano di Pietro and a triptych by Taddeo di Bartolo depicting the Assumption of the Virgin.
⛪ Relatively small cathedral but so beatiful. Padua Cathedral, or Basilica Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption (Italian: Duomo di Padova; Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta), is a Roman Catholic minor basilica and the cathedral located on the east end of Piazza Duomo, adjacent to the Bishop's palace, in Padua, region of Veneto, Italy. The cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is the seat of the bishop of Padua. The church building, first erected as seat of a bishop of the diocese in the 4th century, has undergone major reconstructions over the centuries. The present church is the third structure built on the same site. The first cathedra was erected after the Edict of Milan in 313 and destroyed by an earthquake on 3 January 1117. It was rebuilt in Romanesque style: the appearance of that medieval church can be seen in the frescoes by Giusto de' Menabuoi in the adjoining baptistery. The current building dates from a reconstruction during the sixteenth century. While in the past the design was attributed to Michelangelo, it was performed rather by Andrea della Valle and Agostino Righetto, and has much in common with earlier Paduan churches. Construction began on the new Renaissance building in 1551 and went on for two centuries, being completed in 1754, yet leaving the façade unfinished. ⛪ Diğerleri ile karşılaştırdığımızda biraz küçük bir katedral ama çok güzel.

Compared to many Duomos in Tuscany, this one was a bit disappointing. The altarpiece was gone. In its place went a canvas, possibly due to restoration work, on which you could see what it looked like. For me the best thing about this Duomo was the contrast, the outside and the inside
Andre — Google review
One of the places you will need to visit when in town. Really nice church ⛪️

Nothing to see here. But there was a Christmas market which was super cute.

It's a very boring church compared to other Italian churches I've seen (Duomo in Siena and Orvieto etc.).

If you are climbing to the top of town for this - don’t bother. Facade was never finished. The interior decoration was never started. A massive space with the right hand side the most interesting.

Nestled in the heart of Montepulciano, Contucci is a charming family-run winery that boasts a rich history dating back to the Renaissance. This historic establishment not only offers delightful wine tastings and tours but also immerses visitors in the artistic heritage of its surroundings. The winery is situated near stunning palaces like Palazzo Contucci and Palazzo del Capitano, creating an enchanting atmosphere steeped in culture.
If you’re visiting Montepulciano, make sure to stop by Piazza Grande, where you’ll find one of the town’s traditional wineries with historic underground cellars, where the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano matures. The visit to the cellars is free of charge and definitely worth your time – you’ll walk through centuries-old tunnels where the wine ages in oak barrels. After the tour, you can enjoy a tasting of a wide selection of wines, guided by friendly and knowledgeable staff who are happy to explain everything and help you choose the perfect bottle or souvenir from this beautiful region. It’s a wonderful way to experience the local wine culture and take home a true taste of Montepulciano.

Our favourite winery in Montepulciano! Amazing wines, a wonderful family, a beautiful palazzo and a fascinating history of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. They still do the production in the palazzo in the Centro Storico.
Stuart H — Google review
Self guided tour was excellent. No reservation necessary. Lots to see, today not crowded. At end or tour you can sample Rosso di Montepulciano, if interested in purchasing they let you sample three of their Nobile selections. We weren't purchasing so we went to the cantina where we were greeted warmly by Giacomo. We purchased the flight of five wines and charcuterie, they even had very good gluten free bread for my wife; with local oil of course. The Pecorino we had today trumped, by far, the four or more other places we have visited from San Gimignao, Monteriggioni and Montalcino. Favorite wine of the tasting, the Reserva of course. The Palazzo Contucci was a very good blend of the Mulinvecchio and Pietra Rossa. We have officially added Nobile to our list of wines to continue to learn about and enjoy.
John F — Google review
We visited Contucci in their cellar right in the center of town. The experience was interesting, but similar to many wineries in the area. The wines are good, but not exceptional — certainly worth a visit if you’re in town, but not the highlight of the region. 🍷
Alesya M — Google review
The store clerk was very friendly and provided great service. She also recommended me three different red wines, which were really delicious. Thank you.
Shin A — Google review
In the wine shop they don't offer paid tastings. You can sample one wine and then you have to purchase a bottle in order to try two more. Prices from 20-40€ per bottle. You can go upstairs for a full tasting and food in their cafe.
Extra T — Google review
The oldest wineries in the area and it’s so wonderful. You can walk in on your own and then go to the tasting upstairs. If you know the time you’ll be in the area you can plan a tour and stay.
Jared R — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit if you are spending a day in Montepulciano. We walked in and were told to tour the cellars at our own pace. A beautiful space and all the better when you can take your time and snap a few pics! We stopped into the entrance room where we received an extensive tasting (available for free if you interested in purchasing one or more bottles!). Ariana was very sweet and took her time explaining the differences between the wines and all the vino nobiles were delicious!! Walked away with a half dozen bottles and a great experience.

Magnificent town founded, according to legend, by Porsenna, King of Etruria, Montepulciano is an artistic center that bears mainly Renaissance influences. In the 16th century, under the architectural guidance of Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio, Montepulciano became a prototype of an "ideal city." It offers views of the surrounding gentle countryside, typical of the Sienese territory, dotted with vineyards that produce the excellent noble wine (vino nobile) of Montepulciano.

Icario Winery is nestled in the heart of Tuscany, specifically in the Val d'Orcia region, where it offers a warm Italian welcome and authentic Tuscan wines. The winery benefits from the ideal Mediterranean climate and fertile sloping terrain, perfect for cultivating grapes. Traditional fermentation methods are employed in their cellar, which is adorned with wooden barrels.
We did the Platinum Wine Tour Experience and had an amazing time! The food was plenty, they gave us an extra basket of bread to have with their olive oil and it is honestly the best olive oil I have ever tasted! Because of the heatwave, they kept the tour short and sweet, and stopped only in the shade which we really appreciated. All of the wines tasted incredible, there was quite a variety of flavors and we will definitely be going home with a few bottles. We also accidentally backed our car into a ditch before arriving and the staff jumped into action, allowing us to start the wine tasting while they flawlessly moved our car to safety. What an incredible experience, we will definitely be coming back!

We actually just stumbled upon this winery on our drive to Montepulciano. We were able to walk in and have a tasting out of pure luck since they haven’t started with a couple of big tour groups that were coming. Alessandra was so accommodating and so knowledgeable that we had a superb experience. Had a tasting of the bianco, rosato, rosso, and vino nobile. But it was the Sansaia that we fell in love with. Definitely some of the best wines to come out of the region.

Amazing tour. Had the pleasure to have Riccardo as guide. Walked through the outside and had a look at the grapes just after they finished harvest for this season. Had a look inside the winery and he explained it to us in a simple and very interesting way (we are not wine experts in any way) and the level was perfect. Finished with a 7 glass wine tasting which was extremely good a stunning view from their terrace. Highly recommend the tour and their wines 10/10!

My wife and I had a remarkable time at Icario with Riccardo. The weather and grounds were beautiful. The tour was very informative and Riccardo was full of knowledge and experience, and it was amazing to learn about the process. He was so warm and genuine. The wine was also very delicious. We particularly liked the vino nobile and learning about the rich history of San giovese and the importance on the region. Icario was a lovely place to spend a few hours enjoying the sun, good wine, and good company. We even bought olive oil because it was incredibly delicious!

They really need to have 10 stars. If you are visiting this area and don't stop here, you are missing out. A simple history as that as old as this area is, this vineyard and winery is new and was planted in the late '90s.. first vintage coming out I think in '04. But don't listen to me, go and meet Riccardo from Cortona. I would definitely recommend booking ahead, this is a smaller winery and they do a great job if you make an appointment to give you a great experience. The views are unbeatable. We actually walked down from the top of our room for the weekend 30 minutes. The wines were delicious, the small bites were heavenly but mostly we loved how nice Ricardo and Alessandra!?(Sp!?) We hope to meet again, maybe come visit us when you are in Hermosa Beach. 🙋🍷🤌

We had such a wonderful time at Icario today! Our host, Alessandra, was delightful. The wines are excellent. The setting is gorgeous. We cannot give this experience a higher recommendation! Lisa and Bill Freeman, Menlo Park, CA

Unfortunately I couldn't taste the wine since I was driving. My wife was delighted with her time at this winery. My nose caught all the aromas and I was shocked by them and was already looking forward to the evening to try the wines. The staff is excellent and knows the answers to all questions. The reservation on the website did not work out, but everything was confirmed to us by email. I definitely recommend visiting.

We had a reservation. No one was there to great us. We found someone in a staff room who told us to go upstairs. There, we continued our hunt for some assistance. We found someone in a kitchen... Finally we were seated. We were six and had the Gold level tasting. It felt rushed. There was barely time between pours to experience the wine. The hostess was rude and rushed.

Ristorante la Grotta is a charming dining spot located in the heart of Montepulciano, Italy. Housed in a historic 1500s building, this family-owned restaurant is celebrated for its traditional Tuscan recipes with a creative twist. The Lucciano family takes pride in using fresh local ingredients and preserving ancestral recipes. Diners can enjoy their meals on the garden terrace, which offers a lovely view of the church dome and provides a peaceful atmosphere.
Beautiful restaurant near the San Biagio Temple. Very professional service and ambience is serene. Food is excellent fine dining level. Wine list is extensive and the waitlist knowledgeable. Overall a very enjoyable experience. The same level of food, service and ambience will be easily 3-4 times the price in the US. Highly recommended.

We stumbled across La Grotta at lunch time and wow, what an experience. After apologising for not having made a reservation we were made to feel like family. The atmosphere was upmarket, the surroundings pristine. The staff were impeccable, friendly and charming. As for the food, it was nothing short of amazing and a selection of wines to match. A well deserved Michelin star winner and was by far the best meal and experience of our Tuscan holiday. Thank you to Fabio and all the team. We will be back.

We had the most romantic and special dinners here. The outside is gorgeous. The food was delicious and the service was impeccable. They really made our night so memorable. If you’re looking for a special dinner experience with great food and wine. This is your spot! Thank you to the owners for being so kind and welcoming!! We will be back.

We had dinner here tonight and it was nothing short of fabulous! The wait staff were extremely attentive, had excellent recommendations and true passion for the foods served and wine offered. We did the tasting menu and they were able to accommodate me as a pescatarian. Just a short 15 min walk from Montepulciano, no sidewalks to speak of, so while it wasn’t a long walk, the safer option is driving. Would absolutely dine here again!
Lucy M — Google review
The dishes were delicious ! Not only looks amazing, even the taste were outstanding. Only the dessert a bit too sweet for me, but only my personal opinion. The service was warm and professional!
Chen C — Google review
Very good restaurant in a beautiful location next to a church. They split our dishes into two to share the dishes. The Veal was outstanding, and we love the other dishes and tiramisu. The only dish we didn’t like was the leek ravioli which was salty and too plain.
Nadav B — Google review
Some of the best pasta of our trip. Ordered the more expensive wine by the glass, but I think they gave just some leftover mid stuff from earlier in the day. Franciacorta was also a little flat. Would give them a second chance if possible.

We went there for our wedding anniversary. Beautiful atmosphere, not very big, so better for couples or groups of 3-4. The service and food were very good.

Food’s amazing! Had the duck pasta and the pork fillet with pork lard (best thing ever) and the lamb. Looked unassuming but taste was great! Service was amazing as well, they spoke English so no issues for ordering

Beautiful restaurant! Very bright and open, lots of tables and very accommodating staff. The food was fantastic and you could taste that there’s care put into every dish! Really recommend the wild boar parpardelle (a stunning local delicacy)

This is the best meal I have had yet in Italy. The Florentine steak is a must and so is the pici Tuscan hand made pasta ragu. The setting is what you think of of Italy.

A gem of a restaurant at the top of Montepulciano. After not being able to make a reservation before our trip, the staff was able to squeeze us in that evening. The food was excellent and priced very reasonably for the quality. The staff was friendly, and we loved seeing the chef checking in on guests. A great dining experience all around.

Osteria del Conte Montepulciano in Siena did not disappoint. Delivering delicious rustic Tuscan delicacies, including Ribollita soup and hand-rolled pastas like pici and tagliatelle, we couldn't decide if the views or the food was more outstanding!

Made a reservation (recommend!). Staff were very welcoming and attentive. Food was excellent, especially the papa ai pomodoro. Spouse had the filetto airport funghi porcini (great! But if you order medium rare, you get medium RARE!), I had the fileto di maiale (good). Great wine, great desserts. All in all, a special evening.

Well located in Montepulciano, ok service but food is very poor, feels like tourist trap. We've had one of the worst Fiorentina steaks ever in Italy and super tiny portion of Tiramisu. Would not come back

Steak house
Osteria Acquacheta is a rustic tavern in Italy known for its grilled Florentine steaks and weekly menu featuring local produce. The osteria is popular among locals, offering handmade pasta, bread, and traditional Tuscan dishes that are hard to find elsewhere. It has a community feel with shared tables and generous portions, creating an informal atmosphere where staff treat guests like family.
One of the best restaurants we’ve been in all of our family trip. We were a big group of 10 adults and 3 babies, including 1 vegetarian, and we’ve all enjoyed the dinner so much! Stuff was super nice and the food was amazing. Also price was not expensive at all- 320€ for 3 very large stakes, wine, beer, 4 pastas, salads and more. Highly recommended.
Chen D — Google review
A beautiful restaurant and must visit in Montepulciano. Such amazing rustic vibes, you absolutely must try the steak some of the best steak we’ve ever had. The wine is very affordable, only €7 for a carafe but they make you drink water and wine from the same glass, even though we asked for a separate one!
Danielle T — Google review
Best dinner experience of 2 week trip. Shared a table with a lovely and gracious Italian family. Loved the rustic, family atmosphere and the delicious food, especially the Florentine steak. Prices were incredibly reasonable. Only demerit was owner’s unnecessary lecture as to why we could not obtain a second glass to enjoy the wine while retaining the first for bottled water. (For the record, he was otherwise a charming host).
Vincent V — Google review
As always, it's a pure enjoyment to visit this place! Florentina steak is amazing and the price is super friendly. The owner is quite a character (in a positive way 😁). The reservation is required and better to do it a few days before arrival. The most convenient parking is P7 and maybe P6.

Crowded, loud, shared tables perfect! One of the best meals over a four week period touring Italy. Steak was fantastic, service phenomenal in such a confined and busy space. Book ahead and go!

A fun night. Shared tables, meet some new friends. Share a 1.7kg (or whatever you like) steak. Lovely hosts. Doesn't have the unnecessary frills which is so refreshing. Pasta was good and so was the fiorentina steak. Good fun all around.

Ask for a wine list!! Lots of great comments about the amazing steak! But people miss out on the small list of great wine on offer too! Had a 6 year old Vino nobile Di Montepulciano which was absolutely in the slot for us! We will definitely be back!
Andrew — Google review
The setup is informal with long, communal tables, which gives it a cozy, rustic vibe. We came for the Florentine steak, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The meat was tender, full of flavor, and perfectly cooked. Giulio, the host, was incredibly welcoming. He explained how everything works and even showed us the cut of steak before it hit the grill. The house wine was smooth and easy to drink, the roasted potatoes were delizioso, and dessert was just as good. Definitely make a reservation well in advance.

My family wanted to try a restaurant in Montepulciano that not only serves delicious food but also offers a unique atmosphere-you can enjoy your meal in a charming cellar. Each of us chose something different, and every dish was excellent! The service was friendly, attentive, and welcoming. I highly recommend taking a break at Enoteca La Dolce Vita for a lunch when visiting this beautiful city.

LIKE THE SIGN SAID … Life is too short to drink bad wine. We couldn’t have planned a better “last lunch” in Italy. We had hoped to visit a vineyard, but apparently Wednesdays are wedding days in Montepulciano, and a few of the ones we’d short-listed were closed for private events. Lucky for us, we stumbled on La Dolce Vita a wine shop with a kitchen, tucked inside a 13th-century building in the depths of the village. Surrounded by more than 3,000 bottles and over 600 labels from across Italy, we ordered from the daily menu and paired each dish with a lovely local wine. Everything was simple, creative, and full of flavour, the kind of meal that quietly becomes one of your favourites and made us forget our previous plans. If you visit Montepulciano, keep walking past the more touristy spots near the gates and find this gem instead. You’ll be glad you did. Their plates were gorgeous too! Now to figure out where to get them from!
Taste S — Google review
While wandering through town in search of the perfect spot for a drink, we stumbled upon Enoteca La Dolce Vita, and we’re so glad we did. Tucked away like a cozy wine cellar, it had exactly the kind of warm, inviting vibe we were looking for. The food was amazing, fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented, but the standout was hands down the best tiramisu I’ve ever had in my life. On top of that, the wine selection was unbelievable, they seemed to have just about everything. I asked our waitress for a bottle recommendation based on a few preferences, and she didn’t just bring one, she brought three options to the table and gave thoughtful, detailed explanations of each. I ended up choosing a limited production local red… and, in the most unexpected twist, we unknowingly toured the vineyard where it was made the very next day and met the winemaker! Total full-circle moment. This was easily one of the best dinner vibes we experienced during our time in Tuscany. If I ever make it back to the area, I’ll go out of my way to return for the atmosphere, the food, the wine, and the tiramisu!
Kris H — Google review
Nice interior, large wine selection and friendly service. Busy at dinner time, but they made an effort to find a table for us. Loved their pasta del contadino 🤌🏼
Zsuzsa F — Google review
A great meal in Tuscany. My wife and I shared a pasta and an eggplant Parma which was amazing. The wine choices and service were also good recommend if your in Montepulciano.
Steven L — Google review
Unfortunately, our experience last night was quite disappointing. The staff’s attitude felt distant and condescending, which really affected the atmosphere. Even though we hadn’t finished eating, our plates were taken away without asking. We also ordered a burger to go and were asked how we’d like the meat cooked — we said medium, but what we received was practically raw and inedible. Overall, we left feeling unwelcome and unsatisfied, which is truly unfortunate considering we were looking forward to a nice evening out.

We went there for dessert and it was awesome. The server was super nice and polite. The place itself was really beautiful. I didn't get the burger but I saw very good looking burgers on the other people's tables!

Set within an exposed-stone cellar, this cozy restaurant features dimly lit vaulted rooms adorned with colorful chairs and cheerful table settings that brighten up the traditional surroundings. Best Meal of My Trip - A Must-Visit in Montepulciano! La Bottega del Nobile was, without a doubt, the culinary highlight of my trip to Italy! From the moment I walked in, I was charmed by the warm, welcoming atmosphere and the attentive, friendly service. The meal itself was nothing short of perfection. It started with the freshest, most delightful seafood salad we've ever tasted—each bite bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The porchetta was the star of the evening, melting in the mouth with its tender, succulent meat and perfectly seasoned crispy skin. Complementing the meal were soft, fresh breads that were simply divine. The wine selection was impressive, offering a range of local gems that paired wonderfully with my meal. Considering the exceptional quality of both the food and service, the value for money was outstanding. If you’re in Montepulciano, do yourself a favor and dine at La Bottega del Nobile. It’s an experience you won’t forget!

This is another one of our favorites in town. We enjoy stopping in every time we visit the area. The food is creative and delicious. We love the casual, but elegant vibe. And the service is always wonderful. With the wine shop next door, you will always find something to enjoy. They took time to talk through our preferences to find a perfect wine for us. Don’t miss this when you’re in town!

On our way back from a beautiful site seeing we were recommended to LA Bottega Del Nobile. True Tuscanian experience with true Toscana food with a twist. Great option when visiting Montepulciano. Service was a little off but they made up by not charging us one of the dishes. So the attention was very much appreciated. Atmosphere could be way better. Lights need to be darker so that it compliments the beautiful authenticity of winery vibes.

Our friend Sebastian brought my fiancé and I here for a Monday night wine event in September of 2024. At 55E, it was an unbelievable deal four tastings + a coursed out meal. If you are considering coming here, just book your reservation already! We ended up going for a second night in a row. Valentino and Lorenzo were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We felt at home in the restaurant and the wine shop. We tried a few wines over the dinner, and a few more afterwards as well. Great prices on some really impressive bottles. Make sure to ask for recommendations on unique bottles you won't find outside of Tuscany, so you can bring something special home with you. Fantastic service. Amazing food (see photos). A cozy ambiance. 10/10 would recommend. Grazie to all of the staff, the chef, and our new friends Lorenzo and Valentino. -Michael & Hannah

We have been customers of La Bottega for a number of years, and Antonella provides us excellent service (including curating wine selections for shipping to the US). Location / atmosphere - 5, service 5, food 5, wines 5+. All the details - below. My wife and I came here for dinner at the beginning of July. We ordered marinated and slightly smoked veal for the starter. The look and taste were perfect. For the main course, we ordered a T-bone steak. It was 1,4 kg, so we took one for two. The meat was so delicious and tender that our initial thoughts that it would be too much for us, dissipated. And we had desserts: Delizia Lemon Mousse and Craquelin Cream Puffs with Berries. And, of course, we were recommended two different dessert wines that were perfect for each of our desserts. The service was excellent from the very first moment we entered this restaurant until the very end. The interior was authentic and pleasant. The very special thing was the wine, specifically the way we were able to taste it. Restau rant has an enoteca where there are wine dispensers installed. We got a card (with 100 Eur on it), and we were able to taste any wine (there were dozens of them!) by inserting the card into any of the wine dispensers and getting small, medium, or larger amounts of wine. Our aim was to taste as many wines as possible, so we decided to go for a medium amount (60 ml). The most outstanding in the wine tasting was Lorenzo, the sommelier of the enoteca, who was always ready to recommend a wine that paired well with our particular food. He was not only recommending but also explaining every single detail of the taste of any wine, its composition, and grape varieties; he was presenting the producer; and he was able to answer any of our questions. We managed to taste very rare wines too. I think that during our dinner we both tasted much more than 10 wines (one card for the wine dispenser was not enough for us😉). Even though we know about the wines, Lorenzo's contribution all that evening was outstanding and helped expand our knowledge about Montepulciano and Tuscany wines even more. Many thanks to Lorenzo, the chef (he came from the kitchen to greet us and other guests!) to all the waiters, and to Davide, who created such a nice place to enjoy the food, the wines, and the whole atmosphere! Thank you all for such a wonderful experience!
Rytis A — Google review
We had a wonderful dining experience here during our Honeymoon. The waiters were incredibly professional and recommended a wonderful bottle of red in our price range to go with our meal. It ended up being our favorite we had in Tuscany! Even the wine glasses are delicate and luxurious! We ordered the veal and capers, the ravioli, and the veal entree; each to split. All were delicious. The veal entree was our favorite. We loved dining outside so we could enjoy people watching, but the inside is also beautiful and romantic.

We came around 14h. We ate 3 pastas which the waiter recommended. Very good pick. The pastas were all home made. The portions were big and the food was done really fast. Staff was friendly and approachable. We recommend the Pici with meat sauce, Tagliolini cherry tomatoes and garlic and pici with tomato and garlic if you love pasta. The weather was hot but on the balcony where we sat at was good temperature.

We were very satisfied with the taste of our dishes. Especially would recommend the ravioli and lasagna. I was only disappointed due to my stomach ache just after eating the meal, having not eaten aanything else before. I was only sick person of our 4, so maybe just bad luck. Place is not cheap, but being in the center prices are fair.

Our evening in Montepulciano, we found ourselves wondering the streets to discover this quaint corner restaurant. With the service to be welcoming, polite and friendly, and to have enough room to cater a table of 6 was wonderful at a moment's notice! Now let's get to the food, which each course was as surprising and delicious as the last. The ravioli , Florentine steak and Pana Cotta with fruits of forest (berries) would have to be the ultimate ending to any meal.

Fantastic service, really tasty food. Only draw back was the slightly smokey venue smell from the bbq/grill. (We left with very smelly clothes)

Genuine Italian food (I am a native Italian ;) ) served by very friendly staff. All I ate (pici with ragù, sautéed broccoli, lamb ribs) was delicious, and so looked the dishes ordered by other people.

I guess it’s what you would expect in a very touristy town. What you don’t expect is the staff not knowing a word of English and even when you try to speak the language and read off the menu (I know a little) they look at you confused. They are friendly enough. My food was atrocious. Tagliatelle with mushroom was bland and the pasta over cooked. The sautéed broccoli was also over cooked and squirted water when chewed. Also no longer nice and green. Probably devoid of any nutrients anymore. Montepulciano. Do better.

Saved our whole day. Our intention was to have lunch at another spot that turned out to not be open for food when we got there. They were only doing wine tasting. After walking up and down the town, we saw this place and I walked in asking for a table as I was bordering hangry moods. They put is in a corner booth that overlooked the hills. Parties of 2 can sit on the terrace with a view. There were 4 of us and 1 baby so we needed as much space as possible. As I was on my ragu game, I got their ragu and some caffeine concoction. My sister got the chicken. Let me tell you something, I was hangry no more. My ragu was amazing. The pasta was perfectly cooked. Not al dente like Rome. The chicken was amazing. The tiramisu was the best I’ve had and the drinks were got was bang on. We ended up having the best espresso martini we’ve ever sipped. Wow The service was spot on. Everyone was so nice. The guy who waited on us was super nice.

We were able to eat here without a table on a weekend night because we were early, and they let us sit on the terrace with the best view until a reservation arrived (which they never did so we enjoyed the view for a long time). The food was great, service was very nice, and atmosphere incredible!

We made a reservation for this place at lunch time for our evening dinner after seeing its beautiful terrace. We requested a table at the end of the terrace with the best view and it did not disappoint. Our meal was beautiful - I had the wild boar ragu with my partner having the sausage and porcini mushroom pasta. We both enjoyed very much. Dessert was a little bit of a let down but it didn’t take away from the lovely evening we had. Very romantic and I would recommend if you’re looking for somewhere for an evening meal but I would definitely request the table at the end for the view and privacy.

This is one of the most special and magical places we have EVER stayed. In the foothills of Montepulciano, with stunning views over the rolling hills - but walkable into town!! Karin and are team are so warm, welcoming and friendly, happy to chat, share local suggestions or just answer your questions about the area or property. Karin is SO cool and has created a beautiful oasis- nothing is ever too much bother to make your experience special. The bonus is her cute dog cosetta that follows her around and comes find you for pats! The food is incredible, although vegetarian, it’s bursting with flavour and made with so much love and attention, some of the best food we ate in Tuscany! Lastly the size of the place makes it feel intimate and all the guests were so friendly, we all chatted and hung out at the pool at dinner which felt special. The natural pool is so gorgeous for a dip after a hot afternoon in the town, Basically stay here, you won’t regret it! I cried when I left because I had such a nice time .

The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, with kind people who make you feel instantly at home. We stopped for a lunch. The risotto with zucchini, olives, and a drizzle of pure olive oil, absolutely fantastic. The touch of freshly grated lemon zest made it bright and refreshing, the perfect dish for a hot summer day. The quality of the local ingredients really comes through in every bite, and you leave feeling both satisfied and well. A place that truly feeds both body and soul.

Hands down one of the most beautiful, and peaceful places my wife and I have ever stayed — and food that is honestly better than Michelin star restaurants we’ve eaten at! We stayed here for a 3 nights, but wish we could have stayed longer. It’s small and quaint, but so, so well designed and thought out. It’s like a more homely and welcoming version of a Soho House. And the food is absolutely outstanding! We were in Tuscany for over a week, and ate at some amazing places — even the 3 Michelin star Osteria Francescana restaurant by Massimo Bottura in Modena. However this was by far the best food we ate, so we came back 2 evenings in a row! I’m not vegetarian (my wife is), but this food is world class by any standards or diet, and it’s just a bonus that anyone can eat here. We seriously cannot recommend staying here enough. The rooms are amazing, the grounds are so peaceful, the pool delightful, and the location just perfect. We’ll be coming back many times in the future!

Staying at Fattoria San Martino was an absolute highlight of our Italian holiday! We spent 4 nights here, and did not want to leave! The views are just stunning, it was such an oasis in between visiting Florence and Rome. The food was all incredible, we did the half board option, and each night dinner was 4 courses, all vegan and delicious and creative dishes. We also did a pasta cooking class with Karin which was so fun. Karin and her team are all so lovely and made our stay very special, and Cosetta the dog was a cutie who loved getting pats off everyone. If you are without a car, the walk into town is about 20mins uphill so be prepared but it is very doable and it is lovely exploring Montepulciano town centre.

In July I spent a week at Mrs. Karin’s property with my family and it was unforgettable. At first we were unsure because there is little online information and the vegan menu gave us pause. Tuscany is famous for its cinghiale and Montepulciano has incredible salumerias just minutes away, so non-vegans will not miss out on local specialties. Still, I highly recommend having at least one dinner with Karin. I am not vegan and I loved every dish she served. The property is stunning and filled with thoughtful details. What makes it truly special is the comfort. Karin understands what luxury means for Americans: strong air conditioning, endless hot water, and spaces designed so you never feel overheated. The natural pool was perfect in the July heat, and the rooms were always relaxing. We traveled with grandparents, adults in our 30s, and a child, and everyone had the best time. Rent small cars to explore the Tuscan towns, then come back for Karin’s pasta class (available upon request) and her charming shop. This is paradise, with comfort, style, and soul. Thank you Karin, I know you will be reading this soon! Thanks for taking care of us and making your house our house!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at a stunning vegetarian restaurant nestled in the heart of Tuscany. The farm-to-table setting offers not only delicious meals but also breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, making it a truly memorable experience. The pace of service follows the traditional Italian style—unhurried, allowing you to savor every bite and soak in the beautiful atmosphere. What stood out most was the care and love with which each dish was prepared and presented. The flavors were rich and wholesome, with every ingredient tasting fresh and vibrant. We were so impressed by our first visit that we came back with a group of friends to share the delightful experience with them, and they were equally blown away. If you're looking for an authentic, slow-paced, and heartwarming meal in Tuscany, this place is a must-visit. The combination of peaceful surroundings and delicious vegetarian cuisine makes it a hidden gem.

Ristorante La Briciola

Italian restaurant
Ristorante La Briciola is a charming trattoria tucked away in the alleys near Giardino di Poggiofanti. The cozy, rustic ambiance adds to its allure, making diners feel like they've stumbled into someone's home. The restaurant offers excellent service and serves Tuscan comfort food prepared to perfection. A must-try is their tagliatelle al cocciaccio, a meaty house specialty made from a secret family recipe.
This was the best and I mean the best restaurant we went to by far in our week staying in Montepulciano. We came here three seperate night because it was that good. The service was impeccable, the owner was so kind and helpful, and the staff were so attentive. The food, amazing! We had something different every night and nothing disappointed. I could not recommend this restaurant enough. Thank you so much for having us.

I don't recommend if you're a tourist! disgusting service, with half the tables occupied the waiter ignored us, because we are not locals and did not speak Italian. We waited a long time for our order, while observing the difference in service between us and the Italians with whom the waiters were polite. The portions did not match the price and at the same time the Italians next to us ordered the same thing and their portions were much larger. When the waiter answered his question "are you satisfied with everything?" describing what is written above, he only shrugged his shoulders, service 1 point out of 10

“Gluten free? Not your problem. Our problem.” I’ve never encountered in such hospitality! Not to mention that the food was amazing and delicious, and safe! My husband, who isn’t gluten intolerant, enjoyed himself greatly as well. In conclusion: highly recommend, to everyone and to coeliac people especially.

I was craving Cacio e Pepe, so I asked a local for a suggestion, and she recommended La Briciola. Following the owner's advice, I tried the Ma Chi Cicerchia soup, and it exceeded my expectations. The Cacio e Pepe as the main course was delicious, and I'm grateful for her recommendation. The service was excellent.

We loved our dinner here! The menu is in Italian but the waiter/owner had great English and recommended dishes to us and we absolutely loved them both. We had the Tuscan ragu & their house ragu which you can only get at their restaurant. He also gave a glass of wine on the house because the ragu had to be eaten with the correct wine. The waiter was outstanding. Food, absolutely incredible. We will be back!!

Great local food, very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had a wonderful time. Plus, compared to other restaurants in Montepulciano it’s slightly cheaper!

They have fresh glutenfree pici pasta, served glutenfree bread and a lot of other glutenfree options (peposa, tagliata). They are wel aware of crosscontination. The staff and place are very nice too. Its a popular restaurant, so make a reservation!

Great local food, very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Home made tagliatelle was the best dish of the evening, rabbit was very tasty but a little on the dry side.

Le Logge del Vignola

Tuscan restaurant
Italian restaurant
Le Logge del Vignola is an atmospheric restaurant located in the heart of Montepulciano's old town. It offers two beautiful and romantic dining rooms where guests can enjoy a classic Tuscan menu with a modern twist. The restaurant also features a terrace for al fresco dining. The dishes are creatively prepared using locally sourced ingredients and are accompanied by a selection of fine local wines.
The food, service and atmosphere is Michelin Star quality. Highlights are definitely the wine list which includes Coravin pours of rare wines, the mix of seasonal dishes and long-standing traditional dishes, and the extensive coffee and tea lists. We were thoroughly satisfied.
Jonathan J — Google review
The place is very romantic and full of potential. The service was not attentive. Not a lot of possibilities and attention to our gluten free needs. The food was well presented but mediocre in taste - not more than that. Way too expensive for this level of dishes. The risotto was cold and too unseasoned and undercooked.
Yaron R — Google review
Michelin star food quality and service in a beautifully classical and elegant setting. Every starter and main course we ordered was of the highest standard. The waitress even went out of her way to prepare a special tomato pasta for my son that wasn’t on the menu. For this level of quality, the prices are very reasonable. If you are visiting Montepulciano, this is an absolute must-visit!

A must visit in Montepulciano. The best dinner we had in the area. We had the tasting menu with a wine pairing. The tasting menu comprises of surprise dishes. It is up the the chef to decide. We were a bit skeptical at first, but the meal was amazing. Some of the highlights were the pigeon pasta and the rabbit. The staff is also friendly and very knowledgeable. You can tell they have a true passion for food.

I recently dined at Le Logge del Vignola, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. The restaurant blends modern design with a welcoming atmosphere—minimalist but warm, with thoughtful details that make the space feel both stylish and comfortable. The wine list deserves a mention too, offering an excellent mix of Italian classics and modern producers, with staff who are genuinely knowledgeable and happy to recommend pairings. Service overall was attentive and friendly, never rushed, making the whole experience feel personal. For anyone looking to enjoy Italian food in a contemporary setting, Le Logge del Vignola is a must-visit. Perfect for a date night, dinner with friends, or even a special celebration. I’ll definitely be coming back.

The food, wine and service were all impeccable. The steak with truffle and egg in the nest dessert were 10/10 😋 highly recommend!

For us, this restaurant was a miss. We chose this restaurant because of its inclusion in the Michelin guide but it failed to meet that standard. Our evening started awry when we were asked to choose our table. After several minutes, they told us we needed to move to a less desirable table. We were then ignored for 10+ minutes while they attended to patrons who had arrived after us. For the remainder of the evening we received less than attentive service in contrast to other patrons. Food wise, it was ok but not great. Because I am gluten free, I asked about the details of the tasting menu. Unlike most restaurants, they would not tell me what was on it. Spoiler alert- it’s all items from the regular menu. Twice, they served me items that contained gluten. Several of our dishes were lukewarm. I asked to modify my paired wines to be red and they acted like it was a huge inconvenience. Finally, when making the reservation we indicated that I am gluten free and that it was my birthday. The restaurant made little effort for either. Instead of gluten free bread, I was given a package of grocery store crackers. For my birthday, they gave me a small jelly candy with a candle. No staff acknowledged the celebration. This is not the level of food or service that one would expect for a restaurant that holds itself out as a Michelin fine dining establishment.

Transportation in Montepulciano

Getting around Montepulciano can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

Amerigo Vespucci Airport

International airport
Airport
Amerigo Vespucci Airport, also known as Florence Airport, is a modern facility with a single runway and a two-floor terminal building. It offers city bus links for convenient transportation. Travelers can easily connect to Florence Airport or take direct trains to Rome Termini Station for a three-hour journey to Florence Santa Maria Novella Station.
I think it’s quite obvious that we all know that Florence Airport is a small airport so you wouldn’t expect much compared to some of the bigger airports. Arrivals - I arrived morning on a weekday and the flight from Frankfurt wasn’t full. At the same time there weren’t any other flights that landed so picking up luggage was very smooth and easy. There was no need for immigration (probably because landed from EU country). Going into the city was very smooth and easy. There is a small Visitor Center that speaks English to help. You can buy your tram tickets at the bookshop. Those that rented cars, there is a car rental company shuttle bus just outside that takes you to all the car rental companies place. The shuttle bus comes around 15mins I think. Departure - Very smooth. I departed on a Wednesday evening around 7:15pm flight to Zurich. Check-in was very simple and easy. The security check was very standard. The airport is very small so there aren’t many shops. Obviously there are some restaurant outlets but as I departed on a peak hour, so many of the seats and table were full.

I like this airport a lot even though it is outdated. They haven't added any gates in the last 50 years so you have to take a shuttle from the plane to the terminal. The terminal is really small which means you can walk through it in less than 2 minutes. Once you are outside it is a one minute walk to the tram which leaves every 5 minutes. I've never gotten from my plane to hotel so easily or quickly in a metropolitan area.
Mark P — Google review
Really surprised About Florence being a popular tourist destination, but has an outdated airport with no efficiency! The airport is small and confusing and lack with informations etc etc Transport from and to airport is extremely expensive with set minimum charge and all luggage's in the booth cost extra (cost more if outside of working hour)!!! Food at airport is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, small baguette is £13 and bottle of water is £4!! This airport is desperately need an upgrade to accommodate this huge tourism industry in this region.
David C — Google review
After clearing security, which was decently fast to be fair, the entire airport is one long corridor narrow enough to provoke claustrophobia in a cave diver. You keep walking, hope for the corridor to eventually open up to some space and natural light, but to no avail, it never comes. Badly designed signage, obvious temporary solutions made permanent and overcrowding gives the feeling that this is still a construction site that never finished. The contrast to the beauty of Tuscany is striking and like trying to wake from a nightmare, you have to pinch yourself to remember for are indeed in safe Italy and not some godforsaken airport in the less fortunate places of this earth. I’ll take the train next time.

What kind of airport CLOSES at nighttime? I had a flight at 6am and got to the airport at 6pm the day before. I spent ages in the cafe buying overpriced coffee and food and then thought that I would try and sleep in the lobby area on the chairs. At 1am a guard with a gun turned up and shouted at everyone in the lobby, saying that we all had to leave. This just left everyone confused, and the small amount of people who were waiting all shared confused glances with each other. I remained seated and when the guard came back, I asked him why we had to leave, and he said because the airport closes and would reopen at 4am. So out we all had to go, into the dark, the cold and into the rain. It was too dangerous to wait outside with my two big suitcases, so I thought I’d try and get to the nearby bar shown on google maps. There were no signs to this bar and I ended up on the wrong side of the fence trying to get in. Luckily I then met a group of Portuguese travellers, who were even more confused than I was, and we were able to figure out how to get to the bar, and ended up spending 4 hours there waiting for the airport to reopen. They too were shocked that the airport closed. The worst airport I’ve been to. Never again! If you have to go to Florence, go to Pisa airport and then get the train.
Amelia — Google review
Small airport surprisingly with the huge tourism. SAS only allowed us 2 hours prior to boarding. You do need to take a bus to the airplane
Cindy C — Google review
It’s an average size airport but very busy as the layout is quite cramped. Waiting area is also quite limited in seats. Some cafes for snacks and drinks. Signages are bilingual so easy to navigate Tram T2 to the city is just next to the airport which makes its very convenient
PH P — Google review
First time flying into Florence, and the airport was smaller than I expected. Immigration was quick with only two counters, and baggage claim was right there with just three carousels – very straightforward. Once you step outside, signage is clear and easy to follow. Getting into the city is super convenient. You can hop on the T2 tram just outside the terminal. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the city centre, and only costs €1.50. Trams run every few minutes and drop you right by the main train station. Taxis are also available just outside, costing around €22–25 depending on traffic. All in all, a smooth and stress-free arrival. Florence Airport might be small, but it’s well-organised and easy to navigate – a lovely start to exploring the city!

Forli Airport

Airport
Forli Airport is the preferred choice for travelers visiting the city, known for its adherence to international standards and excellent maintenance. Despite its small size, it is well-liked by visitors due to its efficient management and facilities.
Diverted to Forli by Ryanair due to national strike. Very efficient passport control and baggage delivery despite being busier than usual. Could do with better transport links but overall good experience.
Ian F — Google review
The airport is in the middle of nowhere. Don't count on being able to get a taxi from the airport or when returning to the airport. Forlì is a very small town. The airport offers absolutely nothing. Once you have passed through security, you cannot even buy water. There is not even a duty-free shop!!!! The airport is between houses. Get out and manage on your own. Tragedy. Check-in itself without any major excesses. One gentleman at the security check and when the second lady came she started shouting at people like a school teacher at children. Embarrassing. I do not recommend Forlì airport. It is just a garage in the middle of a housing estate. There is nothing there. It is impossible to leave or return to it. There are no taxi. Nothing.
Paweł T — Google review
Low mark due to the fact the airport is very poorly connected. If your flight leaves at 7 am on Sunday, there is no local transport in Forli to take you from the train station and you are left to walk 60 min to the airport...one taxi in front of the train station on Sunday morning, but a full plane is booked.
Malgorzata U — Google review
Flight was delayed without any informations, we were waiting until someone finally showed up to say that to the passengers. Awful airport, awful organisation, never again.
