Museum
Specialty Museums
Kendal Museum, one of the oldest in the UK, offers a diverse range of exhibits on regional and exotic wildlife, archaeology, history, and geology. It is dedicated to showcasing the town's history and surrounding nature. The museum features an impressive collection of animals from around the world, including Africa, Australia, and the Arctic. Additionally, it houses Roman artifacts and items related to Alfred Wainwright.
Good selection of historic, art and animal exhibits. Really friendly chap manning the tills. Very reasonably priced. Good for all ages.
Laura S — Google review
Very nice museum, some very interesting artefacts on display... Very nice friendly staff also.
Keith B — Google review
They should rename this museum to the taxidermist museum as there is a heck of a lot of stuffed animals, insects shown on the lower ground floor. Two of the three floors are accessible to wheelchairs users. The entrance fees are reasonable at £5 per adult and can be used as a year pass should you wish to torment your vegetarian friends on return visits. There is a small cafe and gifts shop plus an accessible WC. Parking is paid and displayed at £2 for 3 hours. The room with all the different rock samples was my highlight but quite a tight squeeze for wheelchair users. Also, if I remember correctly, the Kendal Museum is one of the oldest museums in England.
H D — Google review
Kendal Museum is a wonderful spot to explore, and the best part is how close it is — just about a 5-minute walk from the train station. It’s easy to get to, and once inside, you’ll find a surprisingly rich collection. The museum showcases a wide range of exhibits, from war memorabilia and wildlife displays to fascinating collections of coins, art pieces, and much more. Each section offers something different, making it enjoyable for both history lovers and curious visitors alike. For anyone visiting Kendal, this museum is definitely a must-go. It’s convenient, varied, and gives a deeper look into both local and wider history.
Rakesh — Google review
A great museum to visit and learn about the regional and local history in Kendal as well as other exhibits displaying archaeology, wildlife, and stuffed animals around the museum. In fact, no one found it more interesting than my dog, who had an interesting interaction with one of the stuffed hedgehogs in the museum. Had a nice time at the museum overall and would recommend others come and visit themselves if they are around the area.
Hello N — Google review
The museum has a Victorian era taxidermy display which we found to be exceptionally well put together, in better condition and design than some major city museums we've been to. Very well managed and maintained.
Jessie J — Google review
Lovely little museum art gallery filled with oddities fossils and semi precious stones. Downstairs is the real treat, quite simply the largest collection of taxidermy i have ever seen in one place..........somewhat morbid but very interesting nonetheless.
David G — Google review
Had an absolutely wonderful time . The exhibitions were amazing, and so many cabinets of curiosities ..it is well worth putting aside a fair hours to enjoy. The World Wildlife Galley was so interesting the museum has made a spectacular job of making thoughtful displays of the artefacts. The staff were lovely so informative and helpful .

Art gallery
Museums
Abbot Hall is an art gallery in Kendal, Cumbria, England. It was built in 1759 and has been operating as a gallery for more than 50 years. A major capital project is underway to undertake a significant renovation. The gallery features paintings by 18th-century local artist George Romney, plus 300 years of British landscapes. It has become a destination trip for locals and tourists alike and members receive free entry to Blackwell Gallery and the Windermere Jetty Museum.
A wonderful gallery with an impressive collection of portraiture and modern art, including a number of Hepworth works. Good coffee and cakes in the little cafe, even if it is hidden in the basement! A great place to spend a few hours in Kendal.
Simon W — Google review
Amazing variety of work from international and local artists. The contemporary landscape exhibition was thoughtfully curated. Good shop and cafe too.
E R — Google review
This is a beautiful place to visit. The staff are welcoming friendly and knowledgeable. The building is elegant and filled with light. The exhibitions, both permanent and temporary, are exquisite. I found Simon Starling's Boat Works exhibition fascinating (it's on until 13th March 2026). Free entrance for ArtFund card holders. And a lovely bonus is the café with its friendly staff, lovely decor and good food. I had the Coronation Chickpea sandwich which was delicious.
JEM M — Google review
Wonderful cafe! The service was quick and the staff, a lovely girl was so nice and efficient! I would definitely come here again as the customer service was superb and caused no issues. The cafe is very cute and shows the gallery in a positive light through the art work and selection of books for children so there’s something for everyone. :)
Bethany D — Google review
Used our Art Pass to enter for free. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The building is wonderful and the paintings and exhibitions are well thought out. It was lovely to see modern pieces amongst the old masters! We will definitely be back. Oh and if you are parking don't use the pay and display just as you enter (like we did!), go further down towards the museum as its slightly cheaper and much less busy! Oh and my other half was impressed by the postcard collection in the shop!
Tannya D — Google review
Quite small collection but wide ranging with special exhibits from time to time. If visiting with mobility aids( scooter), it's fully accesible but a little quirky given its listed status. Staff and volunteers exceedingly helpful. Use the bloomberg app to get a full brief on the gallery
Pete W — Google review
Nice cafe. A small selection of paintings on display.
Julia — Google review
Lovely to have this on doorstep. I think best to manage expectations - it’s not world class - but for what it is it’s lovely and has some beautiful artwork. Great that the permanent collection is open again. I also really enjoyed the two temporary exhibitions that just opened. Can’t comment on what the cafe used to be like, but it’s a relaxing space and had a nice pot of tea. Very good value given you can use your ticket for a year.

It offers an array of entertainment options, including two cinemas, a drama studio, galleries, and a theater known as the Malt Room. The center hosts live music, theater performances, comedy shows, and cinema events. Additionally, it features exhibition spaces for local and national artists to showcase their work.
The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal is a wonderful venue. The staff were friendly and welcoming which created a relaxed atmosphere. The food was incredible aswell all before an amazing performance by Bernard Butler. The intimate setting and great acoustics made the show even more special. Overall, a fantastic place for food, music, and good vibes!
Matty R — Google review
Went to see My Baby play in October. The venue drinks were reasonably priced. Was a little hard to find the entrance as it off the main road but has a fabulous interior with plenty of seating. Sound system was amazing 🩵 The security were probably the best I have ever experienced. Really happy and super friendly! Ticket prices were very reasonably priced. Great place well done 👏 would definitely return 🩵
Helena E — Google review
We have visited twice recently. Once to the cinema which was excellent and more recently to see a show in the Maltroom. The show was fine but you should know that the venue has a flat floor and many pillars so some seats (especially towards the back) have restricted views. We ate in the restaurant - the food is ok and it's a nice place to spend some time. The staff in both venues and the restaurant are great. All in all the Brewery Arts centre is a vibrant spot for a night out in Kendal.
John H — Google review
Great venue for a variety of events. Good bar and restaurant with early eating offers and perks for cinema goers. Highly recommend.
Tanya S — Google review
It's a good theatre. If coming from the south park in Abbott Hall then there is no need to go around the one way system on the way out of Kendal.
Tim P — Google review
Great evening with Ardal O'hanlon
Noel M — Google review
Great arts centre with bar/restaurant, theatre, concert space and two screen cinema. Food is excellent and family-friendly. The bar includes outside seating, and in the summer, there are free concerts on Summer Sundays.
Jill S — Google review
I've never visited before so didn't know what to expect but we accidentally arrived on pizza and pasta night. I chose the pepperoni pizza with vegan cheese for £5. It was amazing. The staff were friendly and remembered our favourite drinks when we returned to the bar. It was busy outside but very relaxing sat on the terrace in the sun. I'll definitely be visiting again.

The Quaker Tapestry Museum is a heritage museum dedicated to the quilting tradition of the Quakers. The museum has exhibits on the history of quilting, as well as examples of traditional Quaker quilts.
Incredible collection of tapestries detailing Quaker history and important events (lots of wonderful social justice moments!). It was a moving experience seeing the exhibition. Very friendly volunteers and a lovely shop where you can buy souvenir cards and other items, books, as well as DIY kits for your own tapestry making. It’s also got the most wonderful peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to hang around there.
Audrey Q — Google review
Lots of beautiful embroidery or tapestry that showcase the values and history of Quaker culture. Simple techniques with outstanding results. If you’re a fan of fiber arts, embroidery, history, or religion you’ll probably find this small collection interesting.
Lisa K — Google review
Found this place quite by accident. Glad I did. A peaceful little cafe included, where you can relax and get a nice coffee. Reasonably priced with a menu that should suit most. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll certainly visit again.
Bruno C — Google review
This is a great little museum. The tapestries are finely detailed and skillfully created. They tell the story of the history of Quakers in the area. You will have an audio guide which gives plenty of description and accompanying information. There's a lovely little cafe and shop too. I found it fascinating!
Ann T — Google review
Lovely visit to the Quakers museum in Kendal this week. Embroideries were fascinating depicting lots of interesting history of the Quaker movement. Deffo worth a visit, as is the Garden Cafe next door 😄 x
Sue B — Google review
A very interesting museum encapsulating Quaker history in a series of tapestries, supplemented by some videos. Spent a couple of hours there. Pretty much all in one big room. Very small car park; best to park nearby. Very pleasant cafe immediately adjacent.
Geoff B — Google review
A really good museum going through the towns history with its tapestry history, along with a display of wonderful tapestry works made in the Town Kendal with the people involved in making them.
Hello N — Google review
Just came across this Museum absolutely fascinating, but will come back as after 1.5 hours had only managed half of it. Very well put together exhibition. The cafe is also lovely and we were very surprised that our delicious food was all Vegan. George Romney Ltd (Kendal Mint Cake)

Mentioned on
8 lists
Confectionery store
George Romney Ltd, known for its famous Kendal Mint Cake, has a rich history dating back to 1869 when a batch of glacier mint sweets went wrong during production. The sweet shop dedicated to this confection opened in 1914. By 1953, the Kendal Mint Cake had gained fame as it accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary and Sirdar Tenzing on their historic Mount Everest expedition. Visitors can purchase the renowned Kendal Mint Cake directly from the supplier warehouse at factory prices.
Oh wow!!! What a wonderful place to pop in to and select your Kendal Mint Cake treats. The lady in the office / shop was very welcoming and answered my questions. I didn't know there was a brown mint cake, until my visit. I am now a convert. Thank you for a great experience.
Michele E — Google review
I had made a special trip to kendal today from Bolton to specifically purchase some Mint cake for my mums up coming birthday!! Was really happy with how I was dealt with by the lady there (sorry didn't get your name) She couldn't do enough to help me get exactly what I wanted for my mum, I ended up buying a gift box filled with all sorts of goodies and a cup. Was amazed at how reasonable the price was and would definitely recommend anyone that is paying a visit to Kendal to pop by and pick yourself a peace of Kendal history up to take home with you. Will definitely be coming back to Kendal in the future for some more mint cake for mum. 10/10 from me 👍 P.s the drive was worth the visit too.
Lee M — Google review
We were visiting the Lake District from the U.S. and were looking forward to visiting this store/warehouse. We love Kendal Mints products. Luckily, they were open. They do not have tours. Their store was low key yet had a variety of products at reasonable prices. The staff was very friendly.
Catherine H — Google review
The "shop" is in the warehouse packaging area. Very friendly and obliging, and very reasonably priced indeed
Nathan C — Google review
Just had to visit this place to buy some Kendal mint cake! Easy parking and helpful friendly staff, I bought a big bar of chocolate covered mint cake but am definitely visiting again on the way home for more as one bar definitely isn't enough!!

wasting time before midnight on nye, i stumbled upon a kendal mint cake in windermere tesco express. as i thought it would be a local delicacy i bought one for the reasonable price of £1.10. little did i know, the likes of runners and athletes eat these. after eating the entire bar and wondering windermere aimlessly for an hour fueled by 70g of pure brown sugar, i now sit in the village in with pure regret and stomach pain. 10/10 would eat again

National Trust - Sizergh

Manor house
The National Trust property of Sizergh Castle is a must-see for all visitors to the Lake District. There are beautiful carvings and furniture, as well as a conifer and rock garden, for kids to explore. The house is open to visitors at certain times of the year, so make sure to check it out!
Absolutely stunning 😍 ✨️ So glad that we visited this place. The grounds, gardens and castle are amazing. All the staff were so welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The only issue is that when it's really busy there is limited parking. It could do with an overflow car park.
Paul T — Google review
Great example of a lived in castle, of sorts. The exhibits art and written guides were excellent, as were the detailed explanations provided by the guides. Of a standout were the beautiful gardens which were resplendent in autumnal colours. The cafe was also a highlight with helpful active servers.
Darran L — Google review
Fantastic place to visit. Great its still lived in by the owners who have owned it for centuries. A lovely cafe with devious food. Gardens very pretty showing autumn colour. The N/T volunteers were knowledgeable and friendly. Glad we chose this place to visit.
Raymond ( — Google review
Enjoyed our visit here. We didn't get to see the house but enjoyed a short walk in the parkland and garden. We were pleased to see lots of benches along the walking route we took. There were a lot of fungi in the woods. Nice cafe and usual assortment of gifts. Pleased to get a National Trust passport stamp and pin-badge 🤓
Simon A — Google review
An absolutely stunning gardens, growing all different varieties of apples trees to colorful flowers and a little place for the bees 🐝 and a cute placid cat that looked very proud of there garden. On Mondays the castle is closed although the gardens are open and the trail upto the hill top church has beautiful views of the vally and hills. Sizergh is well worth a visit if you get the chance! Oh and the National Trust cream tea with the fruit scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream go down a treat washed down was a hot chocolate or be traditional with a classic English tea. The farm shop is close by that had the most delicious smoked cheeses, I had to indulge with the sweet onion chutney and the little round crackers 😋 Thankyou
Ryan M — Google review
Lovely, reasonably sized cafe, with a good selection for brunch, lunches and afternoon tea. There are extensive grounds for walking, and a medium sized formal garden to explore, with many acres for brilliant autumnal colour. Car parking and entry to the gardens and castle are free for national trust members.
Michael R — Google review
You need a few hours to explore the castle and garden. We had enquired about what would be the best ticket to buy as we had only an hour on our schedule. We were encouraged to buy the tickets for the castle and gardens and were assured that it can be done in an hour. But definitely need longer to enjoy the experience. We just ended up exploring the garden. But it is a very beautiful garden and you get a really good view of the castle.
Nancy J — Google review
Sizergh Castle is an absolute delight and a must-visit if you're in the Kendal area. It’s not just a beautiful, historic building, but a full day out with something for everyone. The house itself is fascinating, steeped in centuries of history and it's incredible to think the Strickland family have lived here for over 800 years. The rooms are beautifully presented and the National Trust volunteers are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, ready to share a story or answer any questions. But what truly makes Sizergh special are the grounds. The woodland walks are magical, with a fantastic trail that features unique and whimsical sculptures dotted amongst the trees. The gardens are a highlight - from the productive kitchen garden to the peaceful rockery and the beautifully sculpted lawns, it's clear a huge amount of care goes into their upkeep. Whether you're a history buff, a keen walker, or just looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to spend a few hours, Sizergh Castle is perfect. Highly recommended!

Kendal Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Kendal Castle is a medieval hilltop ruin that offers stunning countryside views and a glimpse into the town's history. Once occupied by the influential Barons of Kendal, the 12th-century castle remains are a must-see attraction. The steep incline to reach the ruins is worth it for the atmospheric experience and great vistas of Kendal. Visitors can follow signposts for Parr Street Sunnyside and Kendal Castle to explore this historic site.
There's not a lot left of the castle, but it is well documented and has great views of Kendal and the surrounding countryside. There are two ways to get up there: a step path through some woods and a more gentle slope across a meadow.
Ed R — Google review
The panoramic views from the castle are worth the climb to the top. At first glance, it seems like "just some old ruins", so I would recommend downloading the Free audio-guide, which is very clear and informative.
Gromit S — Google review
Took a hike to the Kendal castle on a lovely afternoon. It is a magnificent view of the whole town from the top of the hill. Worthy of a visit!
Judy — Google review
Kendal Castle is just a short walk from the village, around 10–15 minutes uphill. The climb is gentle and absolutely worth it once you reach the top. From the castle grounds, you can enjoy a wide, scenic view of the surrounding landscape — perfect for photos or simply soaking in the beauty of Kendal. Although the castle now stands in ruins, it has been well-preserved, giving visitors a sense of its history and charm. It’s not just a historical site, but also a peaceful spot for sightseeing and enjoying the outdoors. If you’re visiting Kendal, I’d definitely recommend making time for Kendal Castle. It’s close, free to explore, and a great way to experience both the history and natural beauty of the area.
Rakesh — Google review
Kendal Castle is Iconic to Kendal - it's a really short walk if you park at Parr Street and can be accessed for 4 sides. Although it's pretty much just ruins - it is a lovely for sunsets and sunrises. I've even captured the Aurora from here. Great for families to explore.
Jonny P — Google review
The views from here were amazing, everyone I walked past said hello and it’s a great location to end a run. Definitely worth a stop by if you’re in Kendal.
Vanessa M — Google review

Farms
Lakeland Maze Farm Park, located south of Kendal in the Lake District, is a delightful destination for families with young children. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as navigating through the UK's top maize maze, interacting with friendly animals including cows, sheep, horses, goats, donkeys and alpacas, and enjoying go-kart races and tractor rides. Additionally, there are indoor attractions like soft play areas and a pets barn where visitors can meet smaller furry friends.
Had the absolute time of our lives here in the may bank holiday. Me and my son were sharing our birthday and had so much fun. So many things to do. Lots of parking available, toilets, cafe and hand washing facilities and let's not forget the delicious ice cream shop. Outstanding value for money. All ages will enjoy this we went as a group and had age 2 as our youngest and age 80 as our oldest member and it put a smile on everyones face. We will for sure be back !
Hannah D — Google review
We had a great day out here. Very well kept, the animals were looked after, the maze was fantastic and lots of fun. Plenty to do. I was a little worried my 3 year old might not have much to play on but I was wrong, there's plenty of play for him and feeding animals. My older boy, 9, had a whale of a time on the slides as well, and we all loved the mazes. It was a really hot day and I'm the maze we felt like it was abroad due to the unusual tall corn field surroundings, felt great.
Phil O — Google review
Brilliant. Worth a visit with young children for sure. My 4 year old enjoyed the slides and the tractor ride especially. There was a good play area for my baby as well. We all enjoyed the maize maze also, very memorable experience. I would certainly consider a return visit if we visit the area again.
John J — Google review
Great day out and the prices are good for what you get. We thought it would only keep us busy a couple of hours but we ended up there the whole day (probably helped the weather was dry, but what a gorgeous spot on a sunny day!) We brushed the ponies, went on a tractor ride (which had some really interesting facts about the farm), fed the animals, played on everything, and enjoyed the soft play. I would have given it 5 stars but felt the kitchen was a little bit of a let down, the food was good but just took so long (for only 1 panini and chips!) Would recommend and will definitely be back, but would take a picnic next time to avoid hangry children (we live 1hr 20 away and it's worth the drive). Staff were lovely and friendly around the farm too!
Sarah W — Google review
Amazing experience. Worth the visit. Plenty of activities for kids. A day filled with fun and scenic views. Cafe on site, toilets and free parking. Farm shop has fresh eggs and lots of useful toys and stuff for kids. I highly recommend. Animal patting was my kids favourite
Rani S — Google review
Just went for the first time today. Wasn't expecting much but to my surprise it was a whole lot more than just a farm! They also had go karts bouncy castles and big slade type slides! My favourite was the tractor ride the queue was a bit lengthy but it was so worth it! Beautiful scenery absolutely love this place! Staff were really nice and friendly. The only little downside were the sinks, which had really hot water in some places after you fed animals etc. Overall it was a brilliant 3 hours spent and i would definitely love to come back again!
R R — Google review
Really good family day out. The admission price included other activities such as the water balloons etc. This is very commendable as it meant no hidden costs for families, a rarity today. Families could spend a good half a day at the attraction and get great value for money. We visited as a group of 21 ranging from 5mths old to oooh, 70+ and everyone enjoyed it. Thank you. An additional benefit was the mix of beautiful cornflowers lending themselves for a few nice photos.

Great day for the kids, loads to do. Well worth a visit. The maize maze is amazing

By day, it operates as a welcoming cafe with a family-friendly atmosphere, offering excellent vegetarian options and accommodating staff who go the extra mile to make guests feel at home. In the evening, it transforms into a bistro serving fresh food in one of Kendal's oldest buildings.

Called in here for lunch, and it was delicious, hood menu choices, would definitely recommend calling in here if you are in kendal, the quiche was very tasty and salad fresh, fish and chips was lovely too.

Called in by chance around noon on a Saturday in August. Had a full breakfast, which had 2 sausage, 3 x bacon, beans, choice of egg, fried potatos, mushrooms, black pudding and choice of toast. The quality of the food was obvious-very very good indeed. No cheap stuff. The service, food and value are outstanding. 10 out of 10
Oliver J — Google review
If you get the chance take your time to locate this wonderful historic venue tucked away down a ginel off Stramonsgate in heart of Kendal. If you do then, like us during our recent visit, you'll be glad you did. The Joshua Tree is a small family run Café & Bistro nestled in one of Kendals oldest Yards in a historic 16th century building. Here we found a warm welcome, great service and some lovely food at an affordable price. The produce is locally sourced and freshly prepared by the team in the upstairs, small and open kitchen area. The menu is unpretentious but with a great selection of what I would call traditional British fare. The homemade soup of the day was delicious, the vegetarian quiche delightful and the chicken, leek and mushoom pie superb. All served by pleasant and efficient, but not intrusive, staff in a wonderful quirky setting. The low ceilings, nice wood burning stove, and open wooden staircase leading to the upstaurs dining area all help to make this a nice venue for us to enjoy a lovely lunch.

We found it by chance and had a lovely meal.in their courtyard. I had Cumbrian Rarebit with onion rings (amazing!) and my husband had a Cumberland sausage baguette. Loads of very good food at reasonable prices.

The cafe prides itself on using high-quality organic and fair trade ingredients to create seasonal specialties like soups, cottage pie, salads, sticky toffee pudding, and more.
Fresh and delicious food served by a wonderful team. We really enjoyed the tart of the day (served with salad) and soup of the day (served with a cheese scone). Coffee was perfect, and the pot of tea was generously filled with loose leaf earl grey! Long live the Waterside Cafe!

Waterside cafe is such a lovely place, filled with friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere. I've been here twice, first time getting the salad bar and second time getting the Buddha Bowl. The value for money is fantastic, and the portions are really filling. The staff were welcoming and very friendly. Look forward to visiting here again 😀

A waterside cafe that had a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere (even a kids play area). The food and service were great. The portions were just right and food quality was great. The Turkish eggs were well flavoured whilst the full English had a flavourful sausage. The drinks were well made with care put into the Flat White's top

A super cozy place with a beautiful view of the river. My husband and I ordered the soup of the day, which was delicious, and a Loaded Hummus with feta cheese that, besides having a gorgeous presentation, was really tasty. The staff was very friendly. They also have a stamp card for coffee lovers so you can get one for free. Without a doubt, we’ll be back on our next visit to Kendal.

My first visit under the new ownership. I had scrambled eggs on sourdough and a flat white coffee (both very good), but will definitely be back to sample the more extensive menu. Very friendly staff, prompt service, delicious food and good portions. Can’t wait for the river works to finally be over to open up the lovely view again!

Welcoming buzzy cafe with delicious food and river views. We had the full English and the Eggs Benedict with Halloumi and hot honey. Both were great. Also two Americanos and two orange juices. Free water available and dog treats.

Amazing food, fresh, hot and amazing tasty. Finished with baklava which was tasty and sticky. From start to finish an amazingly tasty meal, we will be back. Complements to the chef.

It was such a pleasant experience to have lunch in this beautiful cafe in Kendal. The soup was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was great too. There seemed to be many returning customers.

I love this place!! We popped in for breakfast thinking it was a traditional English cafe but was pleasantly surprised to find it was a Turkish cafe. We shared the Menemen with added feta cheese, toasted sour dough bread and a Borek. Oh my God, the spices were an absolute delight on our taste buds. Spices but not hot or garlicky which made it perfect for a breakfast dish without leaving an unwelcome aftertaste iron smelly breath. Both the chef and the front of house lady were very pleasant people who made us feel welcome and at home. A definite recommendation.

In addition to the inviting courtyard, the cozy atmosphere with a real fire adds to its charm. Visitors praise the friendly staff and recommend trying their delicious pizzas and piadinas.
Fabulous little hidden gem off the main street in Kendal. We're so happy we found Marra, the coffee was amazing and the pizzas were the best we've had in the UK for a long time. We're definitely going to be back! Staff were friendly, efficient and laid back. Great attitude from all of them, they're lovely. Takeaway cakes were delicious too!!

Tucked away on the east side of Branthwaite Brow toward Kent Street and beside the jewellers, lies this hidden gem of an independent coffee shop—'Marra' which means friend in Northern dialect, the establishment is accessed through a charming ye-olde-worlde passageway. We had English breakfast tea, a slice of carrot cake, and a flat white—and everything was wonderful. What also made it special, was the setting. In the principal first-floor room, we marvelled at the exposed 16th-century roof timbers which had halved overlapping purlin members and a vernacular ridge arrangement and principal ridge beans—clearly assembled from reused timbers spanning different centuries. A real treat for lovers of old architecture. There’s also an outdoor niche by the entrance, covered and cosy, and another partly covered courtyard where everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves—sipping coffee and soaking in the atmosphere. We’ll most definitely be recommending it—and we’ll certainly be back when in town again. One recommendation is though for the coffee to be hotter as mine was not hot enough but otherwise it was good. Thank you, Lyndon, Peter & Sandy the dog.

So easy to miss the entrance to this excellent coffee shop. Great choice of cakes and pastries to go with the mid morning flat white. Highly recommended.

Marra is a fantastic spot and could be easy to miss, but absolutely worth finding. Staff were warm and welcoming, and the outdoor seating is a real highlight, which was perfect for our sunny lunch. Flatbread and sandwich were both excellent, despite being a slightly smaller portion than expected. It wouldn't put us off going back. A lovely place with great food, great vibes, and excellent service. Highly recommended!

With its delicious food using fresh ingredients and friendly & courteous staff, Marra has become our favorite restaurant in Kendal. Amazing food, like the best tapas I've ever had. The place has a real vibrant atmosphere which takes you away from Kendal and puts you in Spain. Loved it and will definitely be back
Ashley J — Google review
Great tapas, wine and service. Ordered x5 items from the menu for a table of two which was the right amount. Valencian chicken was very tasty and cooked perfectly. Calamari - some of the best I've ever had. Tortilla - flavourful and a generous size portion Vegan albondigas - great to see something like this on the menu, the spicing on the chickpea meatballs was amazing. Pisto con huevo - we chose the vegan options without the huevo but again the dish was super tasty and cooked very well. Just a shame we didnt have more people with us to try/order more dishes from the menu!

After a few beers Albrecht decided to sample some tapas. It was quiet early doors but apparently we got the only unreserved table. Enjoyed a good selection of food washed down with Estrella. It had indeed filled up by the time we left so booking is a good idea.

Visited Comida for the first time this evening, and puzzled why I haven't tried before, fantastic tapas, all dishes were lovely, and good social distancing practices in place for the current situation... We will be back!! Edit (Nov 24): We've been a couple of times recently for breakfast/brunch, and really impressed!.. ultra tasty food, well presented, tasty and the staff go out of their way to ensure you're happy!.. Full Spanglish was excellent, with the mini chorizo sausages the tastiest I've had! Excellent restaurant, like been in Spain, unfortunately without the sunshine and heat! 😀

Additionally, Romneys offers accommodations in unique apartments with great amenities. Although the pub may get busy at times, it's known for its good food and reasonable prices.
We had a great time at this restaurant! The food was delicious, the staff was welcoming, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. One of the highlights was the outdoor playground – our kids had so much fun, which made the visit even more enjoyable for the whole family. It's a great spot for both adults and children. Highly recommend!

The food was good with a great atmosphere. Classic English pub food with some Italian options as well. We tried the fish and chips, lamb shank, chicken burger and lasagna. All the dishes were decent. The seating area is quite big with outside seating as well.
Raman S — Google review
Called for the carvery at this busy establishment this Sunday after booking ahead. You do have to queue (minimum wait) for carvery but the staff plate it for you, it's then handed to you so that you can add gravy and condiments. It's decent quality and a portion size to fulfil most healthy appetites. I could have managed a little more meat, and the gravy & stuffing needs work. Overall good value and the wonderful staff made this a five star experience.
J C — Google review
Totally recommend this place, especially if you have kids. The outdoor area is fab and our three kids couldn’t get enough. Brilliant service, ample parking and delicious food complimented the experience and we’d be happy to come back when we’re next in the area
CJ W — Google review
The food was terrible. The fish & chips - came on a dirty plate, (see pic). The fish was dripping in grease. The batter was thick, stodgy and very unpleasant. The chips were stale - I very much doubt they were cooked to order. I have my doubts that the fish was freshly cooked either. By the colour of the batter and the thick stodginess of the batter, they have just been reheated. I would absolutely never eat here again. One of the worst pubs I’ve ever eaten at.
Jools T — Google review
Lovely place, really well kept inside and out with nice grounds and children's play area. We had dogs, so ate in the bar area but it was very roomy and there are lots of tables available for you and your four legged friends. The staff were really friendly and chatty while we were there. The service was always quick and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent, we were there on a Sunday for the carvery and it was nice to see that it was fully served by members of staff, rather than self serve. Desserts were excellent, I had the Tiramisu which was on point! We enjoyed our visit and would definitely go back again in the future.

Too full for dessert and the house savignon blanc was very good Top marks will definitely return

I'm glad the tapas bar next door was shut for its Winter break. The food here was excellent. We only had the nibbles plate for starters but even the attention to that was evident with the salty roasted almonds and well marinated olives. The main was outstanding though. A millefeuille pastry full of great vegetables: mushrooms, fennel, courgettes, shallots and artichokes. That was covered in a rich blue cheese sauce. As for the cheesecake that wasn't there long enough for a picture 😜 Quality food, nice atmosphere and very reasonably priced too!

Get the chips and gravy! Me and my friends (all 9 of them) loved them and thought they were super tasty. I’ve been to many restaurants, and it’s really hard to impress me — especially as someone who manages businesses and truly values quality. I’m usually very selective, and not a big fan of Asian cuisine, but this place was different. We were invited to a concert with friends at Bangkok 7, and from the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the atmosphere, the attention to detail, and the overall vibe. The food was the real surprise — high quality, carefully selected ingredients, and beautifully presented. I even noticed they serve award-winning Sticky Toffee Pudding from Cartmel! For the first time ever, my kids loved the food so much we ordered the steak twice. Definitely a place we’ll be visiting regularly. Thank you for the great service and the passion you put into everything.

We visited Farmhouse Kitchen after researching highly-rated places in Kendal and were not disappointed. The burgers and chips were incredibly tasty, so much so that we ended up sharing them. The coffee was excellent, as was the smoothie my wife had. Overall, everything was outstanding and we highly recommend this cafe. We also stopped by for a late brunch and found it to be amazing. The atmosphere was great, and the food was delicious and fresh.
September 2024: Spotted this place whilst passing through Kendal and decided to stop off for some lunch. Lovely cafe with great selection of food and drinks. After being shown to the table, you then need to order food at the counter - some people might not like this but I do as it means you can order without being put under pressure. Food was delicious and well presented. Venue itself had a relaxed atmosphere and was very busy. Only downside is that there was only one toilet and the tables were quite close together. Menu is reasonably priced, given the quality. Free wi-fi was available. Highly recommend a visit if in Kendal.

It was our first time trying in FHK , me and my boyfriend absolutely loved the service and the atmosphere . It gave us the cozy cafe vibe on a rainy day in Kendal . We stopped in for breakfast with a party of 7, the staff was so sweet and accommodating every step of the way. My son ordered the spiced Chai latte but wanted to know if he could get it iced and the gentleman taking our order said... I will figure it out and he brought out a stunning iced Chai latte that our son said was one of the best he's ever had. We've been back in the UK for a week as of today and my husband has been aching for a full english, he ordered the big boss and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The Benedicts were delicous... everything was delicious. The restaurant is cute and cozy with it's neon Famhouse sign and pom-pom tipped bunting, and delightful cafe jazz playing softly in the background. The staff even ran back and found us the brand breakfast tea you serve so we can stock up before our journey back.

Carlisle Lake District Airport is a highly regarded parkland gem that has served as the venue for regional qualifying rounds of the Open Championship. With its challenging layout and demand for concentration, it offers an excellent opportunity to showcase golfing skills. Situated in the northern part of the county or Eden Valley, it's conveniently accessible from nearby cottages. The airport boasts top-notch amenities and a welcoming staff, making it an ideal destination not only for pilots but also aviation enthusiasts from the general public.
A wonderful experience flying in for a quick visit. A long, wide runway in perfect condition with first class Air/Ground radio assistance. All the staff are friendly and accommodating, nothing is too much trouble. The pilot's lounge is in part of what would have been the terminal building and, by general aviation standards, it's palatial. Great views across the car park to the hills, which looked particularly beautiful on the bright, icy winter's day I visited. I'd encourage any GA flyer to visit Carlisle; we need to ensure facilities as good as this survive and develop.

The two children 5 and 8 had been before, and begged the grandparents (75 and 72) to go again. Sadly the children did not give us enough time to absorb a lot of the information. The boys knew the names of the aircraft (the guide book from the first visit had been well read). The visit to the Vulcan bomber was a real hit especially climbing the ladder for the 5 year old. Not necessarily recommended for every 5 year old. A very good visit, would like to return for a slower trip around the museum .

Everything brilliant, then we took off(wasn’t the only thing that took off) something was wrong with the engine so we had to evacuate, it was my old nanas turn, they plugged her into her oxygen machine instead of the parachute and absolutely booted her off the plane it wasn’t till about 3 seconds later they tried grabbing her bald head back because they realised they where still holding onto the parachute in their arms, and my grandmas dentures flew into someone’s face and knocked them right out, and their kid was screaming, what a horrible sight for a kid. I looked out the escape door and my grandma hit a scaffolding pole and everything went tumbling down, I didn’t know she was so fat…anyway, Everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong. Awful plains but alright airport

Hanger 42 is the absolute business. Small but perfectly formed, lots of volunteers loads to look at and brilliant.
