Platanias Beach

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Platanias Beach is a vast sandy stretch located in the charming Platanias village, just 11 km from Chania. It's a popular spot with younger crowds due to its collection of hotels and beach bars. The beach is well-equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and water sports facilities. While it can get wavy at times, there are also days with calm waters perfect for swimming and floating around.
Lovely beach in Crete where you can go swimming. Have great food at the restaurants lining the beach. Enjoy the sun and sea. Take a ride on a water scooter. And, if you’re lucky catch some waves on your surfboard 🏄‍♀️ in the port by the pier!
HelenaAndTheSea — Google review
Really nice stretch of beach. Many restaurants offer use of sun chairs and umbrellas with any food or drink purchases, so it's easy enough to find a good spot. We stayed at Sonios hotel right along the beach and most of that area was perfect because of all the space. It can get very wavy though depending on the day. During the week we probably had 3-4 days where the water was calm enough to just float around, and they other 3 were a lot more rough so not as good if you aren't the best swimmer.
Caleb — Google review
Worst beach I have ever been to. At the lightest waves the lifeguards put a red flag on the beach and do not allow anyone in the water. They are aggressive and yell at everyone who gets in the water even up to their belly. The sea was lightly wavy every day so I never got to swim there.
Dinu N — Google review
Ignore the ratings, it is nice, even couple of trees with free shadow but it is a very windy region and red flag is almost always up which means you cannot swim...long story short if you just want to chill at the beach, reading something is fine, if you want to swim...slim chances... PS: Even when you can swim, it is very deep, dirty and has rocks in the water, at least from.where i entered ...
Oncall M — Google review
Unfortunately was there on a windy day but the beach itself is great... Sandy beach perfect for children and grown-ups.. lots of sun chairs... Restaurants and stores close by
Kewa C — Google review
Average beach, not as nice as nearby Agia Marina. Mix of sand and shingle, not easy to walk on but probably fine if your going straight on the water or on a lounger. Fair bit of rubbish around and the attached bars are, again, average. Basically OK, but easily beaten by Agia Marina beach.
Ec2208 — Google review
Great mam and pap resteraunt..beach front great views, they were very welcoming. The Limited menu was good and mamma cooked my bream exactly as I wanted it. They are very welcoming and the prices were, in my opinion low...
Vincent W — Google review
I find it's necessary to clarify some things after reading reviews made for 2 beaches ('Paralia' and 'Beach' Platanias) that in fact are sections of the same 2 km long beach. On the East side(right hand looking to the sea) the beach starts after Marina=sheltered bay where boats go especially to Thodorou islet. First 200 m after the pier the entry in the water is very rocky with a slippery seabed and shallow water for at least 100 m. Please note that there is stunning for snorkeling with best part near the pier. Quiet area with some shadow under pines and parking lot on premise. After those 200 m measured from Marina to the left looking the sea the entry in the water is smooth with 2-3 m of small rounde stones and the sand as long as we manage to swim. And is lije that for few kilometers to Gerani but there of course is not the subject of the Platania beach/paralia. The sections with sunbeds and free areas to put your towel alternates somehow respecting the new rule to keep around 40% free area. You will have plenty of space to put your towel and umbrella no matter the season. Regarding the water have to say that it is crystal clear when no waves and becomes cloudy when choppy with medium to big waves, very beautiful to play but with the downside that you cannot see the bottom due to the sand moved with the waves. At Paralia Platanias on this map there is an improvised parking lot directly behind the beach, 10 m distance. Also big pines that provide shadow all day long. Lot of tavernas/beach bars that rent sunbeds for around 5-12 E a set if you spend little money for a drink bring to sunbed or eat on their tables. So long story short Platanias beach is one in fact but 2 on Maps and this 1 offer various shoreline conditions that are'n accurately described when someone review with 'rocky' or 'all sandy'. If you walk a little bit near the water for sure will find the perfect spot for you!

Biolea Astrikas Estate

Olive oil manufacturer
Natural goods store
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Crete, Biolea Astrikas Estate offers an unforgettable experience for olive oil enthusiasts. Visitors rave about the Enthusiasts Tour, which provides a deep dive into the art of olive oil production while allowing guests to savor exceptional flavors, including delightful lemon and orange-infused oils. The tour is not just informative; it’s infused with passion and pride from the hosts, making every moment memorable.
Absolutely stunning. The tour was a great way to learn about olive oil production and to try a few types. Also ate at the restaurant which has a unique and delicious menu. The view and setting are breathtaking. Strongly recommend stopping here. I will be back.
Roby M — Google review
We went for the tour and then had lunch at the restaurant. What an amazing experience! The tour was extremely professional, Elena taught us more than I ever knew about olive oil. Lunch scenery, wine and dishes were incredible.
Ariel S — Google review
We were here as we wanted to have the tasting menu. If this is your expectation, you have to book online in advance. Although we could not have the 8 course menu, we had the best meal we have eaten in Crete. All personal was super friendly and kind. And the food is just simply amazing. The drive is long but definitely worth it! Thank you so much for such a beautiful experience!
Mariana C — Google review
This was perhaps the best meal of my life. Everything was so fresh. The circle salad was awesome. And the tour was so interesting! We also really enjoyed the tasting. What a beautiful setting. We travelled all over Crete and this was such a highlight!
Paula L — Google review
I highly recommend the Enthusiasts Tour at Biolea Astrikas Estate for an immersive and flavorful experience. The tour was very informative, and you can really feel the pride they take in their process. The stunning views and warm hospitality made the visit even more memorable. The meal was one of the best we had in Crete, so much so that we returned twice more to eat here. Truly unforgettable!
Sal — Google review
A very insightful tour by Alexandra who is probably the most knowledgeable person I met when it comes to olives and olive oil production. The restaurant at the estate is a fantastic dining experience.! Nothing at fault and the service was superb!
Adonis M — Google review
We came here on a whim as another one of our police oil tours wasn’t the best, we decided to try this one and it was awesome! The detail in the tour was great, really understanding the process and getting to taste GREAT olive oil! The lemon and orange flavored oil was our favorite! Bought a bunch to bring home to our family! I do wish they had bubble wrap to help us bring it home easier like some other places do. Also we were a family of 4 adults and two infants and even the kids had a great time being outside and seeing the olive trees!
Tonya S — Google review
The tour was great !! We learned a lot of new things about olive oils but the lunch was extraordinary. And the location is so so pretty. We had a really really nice day thanks to the staff.

War Shelter Platanias

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Historic shelter of Platanias, a former German-built refuge during World War II, now operates as a small museum dedicated to commemorating the Battle of Crete. The knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff eagerly share their wealth of information about this significant historical period. Although not large in size, the museum offers free admission and accepts donations to support its volunteer workers who play a vital role in preserving history. While reaching the museum requires ascending a steep hill, the breathtaking view at the top makes it worthwhile.
I recommend it to anyone interested in World War II history. It is an unusual museum because it is located in carved tunnels. Though small, it is very interesting. The history behind these tunnels is worth delving into. It's really fascinating. I won't reveal any details. Once you are there, you will see and read all about it and get answers to your questions. Admission costs 5 euros. The museum is located high up on a mountain, so you will have to take a short walk to get there. It's worth it, though, because the views are beautiful, apart from the museum itself.
Tomek D — Google review
We didn’t visit as it was closed, just doing a review to inform others, we wish this info was shared, as in Google appears it is “now open for the season”. So, if you want to visit during March, better call in advance.
Babysooz — Google review
Opening hours, see photo. A bit old history and a must for people interested in WW-II. Some items good and interesting but also damaged and corroded items. Cool in the cave.
H S — Google review
Great museum. If you dont know what to do a day in Platanias, take a trip up to the War museum, underneath the church up on the hill in Platanias. A nice walk from centrum, interesting history and nice and cool inside the tunnels. Outside it was 35 deg, inside it was 23 deg 😇
Geir B — Google review
Underground galleries created in World War 2, a nice historic visit through 200m tunnel. Was ok, could have been better. Missed some information, a lot of war remains packed together without coherence. 5€ admission. Unfortunately opening times were not clear online: starting from end of April they are opened everyday 1000-1200h (except Sunday) for the tourist season. Some parking spots (10-15) next to entrance.
Mike L — Google review
A very interesting place with many artifacts from the Second World War, showing the scale of the fighting and the history of the German defense in the tunnels against the Allied troops. I highly recommend visiting this museum, located in tunnels in the mountainside under the church. It plays a role in the whole story..
Tomasz L — Google review
A welcome shelter from the heat, but also a very nicely put-together museum by volunteers. Many photos and objects to view.
Mosse S — Google review
If you're into your ww2 history this is a place to visit when on crete, staffed snd supported by volunteers historical memorabilia, the quality of the tunnels and information well worth the 5 euros entry feee support this museum

Mother of God Odigitria Gonia Monastery

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Gonia Odigitria Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Lady of Gonia or Panagia Odigitrias, is a stunning Renaissance-era Christian stronghold located near Kolymbari and Chania. Situated on a steep hill overlooking the Gulf of Chania, this ancient coastal site was originally founded in the 9th century and later relocated to its current position in the 17th century.
this monastery from 17th century is really beautiful, it played a key role during Cretes struggles under Venetian and Ottoman rule! Its just right by the sea with an amazing view of kolymbari, this panorama is just stunning! mix of Venetian and Orthodox styles, with well-preserved frescoes and a charming courtyard! its got such an interesting history too, entrance price is totally fair!! I think it just helps with upkeep, and you get to see the museum in the basement which is packed with cool old items as well. oh, and the monks make this super tasty sweet wine, definitely try it if you get the chance! the whole place is peaceful and charming, perfect for a quiet visit with great views. loved it here!
Wicked J — Google review
Such a beautiful place. So much history. Just beautiful, felt very emotional visiting. Breathtaking views from the top too.
Patricia H — Google review
Tickets can be bought at the entrance. Since it is a monastery, they do prefer if your shoulders are covered and down to your knees is covered as well. So much beautiful history.
Abby B — Google review
Beautiful monastery,2 euros entry fee. Lots of information. Lovely views as hight up. Free parking.
Irene R — Google review
The most beautiful chance find a wonderful monetary immaculate presented breathtaking architecture and the basement museum is a treasure trove of artic acts artwork literature and ecclesiastical relics and clothing from 15th c onwards Jaw droppingly beautiful original religious artworks in display in a superb underground setting. So well done. Small gift shop and shaft places to sit and just 'be' away from the world's madness. They even have a deer farm onsite so cute. Worth every c of the €3 ticket. Please support this monestary and visit! Just on outskirts of kissamoss
Gg 9 — Google review
Gorgeous and tranquil 17th Century monastery in western Crete. Stunning views from the monastery out to sea. Lots of history in this place and many artefacts to look at and read about at the monastery museum. Well worth the visit. There’s even a Turkish cannonball that stuck the monastery, still visible in the wall today. There is a €3 per person entry fee.
Vitaliy K — Google review
We visited this monastery on one of the days we stayed in Agia Marina, Crete. The monastery is located on the seashore near the town of Kolymvari. At the entrance there is a small parking lot and a deer pen. The entrance to the monastery is charged 3 euros per person, which is atypical for monasteries. In fact, I think there is an entrance fee to the museum that houses a very large collection of ancient relics. Inside the monastery I also saw a few turtles and a few parrots kept in inappropriate conditions, the turtles being kept in a small pool in the sun, the birds in a cage full of dirt. Photography and filming are prohibited inside the monastery. The view over the turquoise sea is dreamlike. I usually don't give less than 5 stars to religious establishments, but here, honestly, I didn't like how the animals are treated, and there is also an entrance fee.
Soe S — Google review
Beautiful little monastery, and a great museum. A nice gift shop too.

Anoskeli Winery

Winery
Food & Drink
Anoskeli S.A. is a charming destination nestled in the hills among olive trees, offering an informative tour of their olive oil mill and a delightful wine and olive oil tasting experience. The facility provides a well-recorded movie showcasing the various steps of olive oil production. Visitors can enjoy a modest yet delicious tasting menu, featuring award-winning olive oils and unique wines produced on a small scale.
We had an incredibly positive experience at Anoskeli Winery – a true gem in the Cretan countryside. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality, and the entire visit reflected the passion and pride behind both the wine and olive oil. We had the opportunity to taste five different wines, each with its own unique character and story – all of high quality and presented with great explanations along the way. We also tasted their award-winning olive oil, which was truly special – fresh, rich, and perfectly balanced. Accompanying the tasting was a selection of delicious local food, which complemented the wines beautifully and made the whole experience complete. The combination of great wine, tasty food, and a welcoming atmosphere made this one of the highlights of our trip. Anoskeli Winery is a must-visit if you're in the area – authentic, professional, and full of charm. We highly recommend it!
Flemming P — Google review
We loved our visit and wine and olive oil tasting experience at Anoskeli Winery. They have won many awards for their olive oil. There wine was also incredible. We were given a presentation on each wine prior to tasting which was very educational. They pair their wine and olive oil tasting with delicious local meats, cheese, olives, etc. I wish we could purchase their wine and olive oil from the USA.
Kristin K — Google review
We visited Anoskeli Winery for a wine tasting and it was a wonderful experience. Even the drive there was beautiful. the winery is located about 25 minutes from Platanias, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival and given a clear explanation of the tasting experience we had booked. It included five different wines and two types of olive oil, all locally produced right at the winery. Everything we tasted was delicious, and the plate of cheeses and spreads served alongside was excellent. Overall, it was a lovely visit, relaxing, flavorful, and very well hosted. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area!
דניאל ש — Google review
An unforgettable experience at Anoskeli Winery! We tasted a wonderful selection of wines (white, rosé, red) as well as raki, all beautifully presented by the lovely ladies working there. They were incredibly kind, welcoming, and made us feel right at home. The place itself is stunning, peaceful, and truly feels like it’s away from the world. We also got to taste their amazing olive oil, simply incredible! A must-visit if you’re in the area. 🍷✨
Inga M — Google review
I’m lost for words really. The customer service from Efi was impeccable, we tasted some outstanding wines and some truly delicious olive oil! All of which was great value, we bought a bunch to take home for ourselves and as gifts too. We will definitely be back in the future! Don’t forget the stunning views around the vineyards too!
Carlos M — Google review
We went for olive oil and wine tasting, and it was a fantastic experience. She explained the flavor profiles in detail, and we really came to appreciate the beauty of their olive oil and wine. The flavors were amazing — just one sip impressed me so much that I kept going back for more. Each wine had its own unique character, and the olive oil was so fresh and smooth. The atmosphere was peaceful and welcoming, and we could truly feel the love and care that went into their products. Highly recommended!
Chi L — Google review
Former residents of Sonoma Country California, and now making Crete our home, we know our wine. And the wines (and olive oil) here are delightful! But they are ever so slightly eclipsed by the warmth and knowledge of the hospitality staff. We have visited quite a few wineries here on Crete but the experience at Anoskeli was the most enjoyable!
Ken F — Google review
The best Winery in chania with amazing professional staff like Effie and Giannis from Chania wine 🍷 tours. Highly recommended to sit taste the local exquisite olive oil that has won 🏆 gold awards. The wines are some of the best in the region with taste that will excite your sensors. We had an amazing tasting and will be back again. I suggest in buying some products to take home with you so you can keep enjoying the flavours. Thanks again for great hospitality experience 💙🇬🇷🏖🍷👍

Afrata Beach

Beach pavillion
Outdoor Activities
Beaches
Nestled on the stunning Rodopou Cape, Afrata Beach is a hidden gem just 38 km from Chania. This charming pebble beach lies in a serene bay, about 1 km east of the quaint village of Afrata. With its crystal-clear waters showcasing mesmerizing shades of blue, it offers an intimate escape for those seeking tranquility away from bustling tourist areas.
Very nice beach, calm and secluded. Amazing water, not crowded. Free umbrellas and sunbeds available. Very good prices at taverna on the beach, frappe only 2.5 euro
Milena M — Google review
Nice and cozy beach with pebbles. The beach is not very big and has a tavern and a bar. It is not fancy however is has basic amenities. The road to the beach is narrow and steep. Beach is on the quite side. There are a few beach umbrellas with sunbeds. They are free of charge taken in account that you will take some beverage from the bar. Parking is more than enough. If one comes at 09:00 can find enough sunbeds and parking in the bonus parking in the shade. If you are after serenity, simplicity and basics, this is for you. Entrance in the water is with stones making it a bit difficult for small children. I gave it a 4 star being simple and basic, however on our favourite list.
Ciprian G — Google review
Picturesque and perfect secluded beach! Would come back everyday if we could - very stunning beach. Please note it is a pebble beach and does not have many sun loungers but other than that, it is fab!
Paige M — Google review
Beautiful secluded pebbly beach, umbrellas and lounges included (or so we thought!) The cafe/shop was closed when we arrived (which also meant the WC/toilet was closed). Quite a narrow, windy road to enter, waves were pretty crazy also! Shower by the beach for freshness
Lucas D — Google review
Afrata Beach is a lovely pebble beach located near Kissamos, offering a peaceful retreat from the more crowded tourist spots. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to relax in a more secluded setting. The beach is wonderfully quiet and intimate, with very few people—we counted a maximum of 15-20 visitors during our stay. One of its major draws is the convenience, with free parking available right at the beach. Visitors can also enjoy the comfort of free sunbeds and umbrellas, which are provided at no cost. Additionally, there is a good and affordable snack bar on-site, perfect for grabbing a refreshment like an iced coffee for just €2.50. If you’re searching for a beautiful, smaller beach away from the crowds, I highly recommend visiting Afrata Beach. The only thing I would rate negatively is the sign saying “Free beer tomorrow,” which is on the beach every day and there is never actually any free beer – it’s a bit misleading.
Lukáš N — Google review
Small, pebble stone beach, with wonderful clear blue water, but must have adequate water shoes. Snorkeling and scuba diving site. Free, but very few, sunbeds and umbrellas - we arrived at 11AM and there were no left, so we stayed on the sun. Bar and restaurant on the beach working all day, with the usual Greek cuisine, fair price. Free parking, with paved road all the way down to the beach (we drove a Fiat Panda and it was ok). Would come back with an umbrella and food for the day ☀️
Catarina B — Google review
Very beautiful and secluded beach. It doesn’t get crowded. You can get umbrella and sunbeds as long as you have something from the tavern. The prices are okay and the food is fresh and delicious. Only minus is that the beach is with rocks so you’ll need aqua shoes.
Hristo L — Google review
Great beach but very stoney and large pebbles. Crystal clear water, but aqua shoes necessary. Plenty of beds and brollys, free! Taverna very good with cheap prices. No rip off even though in isolated location. Cheapest carafe of very good wine that I've come across --- €4 half litre. Taxi €20 each way from Kolymbari.

Unprecedented views of western Crete from here. Gorgeous views of the monastery nearby. Definitely worth a quick visit. Free to enter. Ample parking available. No off-road driving to get here. (Swarms of cicadas too!)

Paralia Menies

Beach
Paralia Menies is a secluded and stunning pebble beach located in the western part of Crete, making it a perfect destination for adventure seekers. Accessing the beach can be quite challenging, as it requires a long journey either by 4x4 vehicle or by hiking along the coastal path. Despite its remote location, the crystal-clear waters and clean sandy shore make it an ideal spot for sunbathing and snorkeling.
Exceptional place mostly accessible by boat or 4x4... Definitely worth visiting but have an umbrella ,pack lunch and have water with you as the beach doesn't have any of those things
Konstantinos K — Google review
Little piece of heaven! Amazing beach! Perfect for swimming all day, from morning to night. Remember to bring water and food, since the closest village is about 30 minutes away. A 4x4 will definitely make the driver feel better for this drive. But it is not an impossible dirt road for a standard vehicle. The last 3 klm are pretty bumpy because the road includes plenty of rocks. All in all, totally worth it!! Beautiful drive as well!! Crete at its prettiest, rawest form!!!
Stelios R — Google review
We were in our own car, the road is of course bad for cars, the beach is gorgeous. You can drive right up to the beach - it's convenient. Take food, water, there is nothing there.
Яна Ш — Google review
Secluded beach, tough to reach due to the road condition but you have to be careful and patient - it can take a good hour with an average speed of 10-15km/h. Once in a while a boat with tourists can come for an hour or two but at most of the time it is empty - just for you and the goats going around.
Simeon F — Google review
In most winter days you can enjoy this beach for yourself. I have seen some people snorkeling in the bay, but cannot share an experience of my own. You habe to be careful with the jellyfishes in the water. They bay is wind protected so even sunbathing at 16 degrees is possible. The path is mainly dirt road for 30 minutes at the end.
M. ( — Google review
We visited this beach and left with no words. The waters were crystal clear with clean sand with pebles to sunbathe. Beautiful ocean floor for the snorkeling enthusiasts! Tons of fishes of all kinds as well. The area is not easy to access cause its a 45 minute car ride through rough terrain. But it's definitely worth the visit. Lots of goats and sheep are present and the drivers need to care were to park their car. The beach is not considered family friendly.
Athina M — Google review
A beautiful beach with mointains and valley’s surrouding it. There are also feral goats inhabting the area
C_ark — Google review
A long journey but well worth it. The journey will take you approximately an hour from where the gravel road starts. It is recommended that your vehicle is 4x4, however, the route is doable with a standard front wheel drive as well. We drove the route in a Nissan Micra (tiny car). Watch out for the mountain goats on the way there and drive carefully. The beach is far away from touristy spots making for a relaxing trip - we were the only ones there for a while. Bring water and snacks. Also possible to bring grill food if you want to barbecue on the beach; there are fire pits on the right side of the beach by the cave. Best spot for snorkeling, lots of big fish. Water is clear and gets deep quite fast. There are two beach chairs for sitting but bring your own umbrella or seek shade under the caves adjacent to the water.

Agia Park Lake: A Tranquil Oasis of Natural Beauty Nestled in the heart of a lush environment, Agia Park Lake is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. As soon as you step into the park, you are greeted by the soothing sounds of nature, the rustling of leaves, and the gentle lapping of water against the lake's edge. The lake itself is a crystal-clear wonder, reflecting the sky and surrounding greenery in its calm surface. It's a perfect spot for those who enjoy kayaking or paddle boating, offering a peaceful journey across its expanse. Fine dining restaurant
If you're on the hunt for a delightful dining experience in Chania, look no further than Symposium Restaurant Platanias. Nestled by the square, this gem boasts a chic modern decor and an inviting lounge vibe that makes it perfect for both intimate dinners and professional gatherings. With its diverse menu offering a little something for everyone, guests can indulge in traditional dishes presented with a contemporary twist while enjoying impeccable service. Many visitors have returned after years to find that the warm hospitality and vibrant atmosphere remain unchanged.
Staff were very welcoming and fun to chat with. The food was great. The cocktails were nice and got a great recommendation from our waiter. My wife and I will definitely be eating there again soon.

We asked for "medium rare" steaks. They came as "medium". They were tasty though, but the vegetables were also under-grilled / completely raw. The children's chicken souvlaki was very small with only 5 pieces of chicken and a mountain of fries (the chicken/fries-ratio is the opposite in other restaurants), so we had to order another children's menu item for our 2yr old. The toddler chairs are useless (detailed description under image). Do not bring small and wild children here, for your own sanity's sake. The waiter did a good job by being very attentive and friendly. The eating area lacked fans, so eating here before sundown will be a very sweaty affair. In my opinion the overall experience doesn't live up to the high prices. Don't be fooled by the "Fine dining" and "Gourmet" labels found on this page.

Wonderful dining experience, the staff made us so welcome and the food was delicious. If you like ginger leave room for the ginger creme brulé, it was absolutely delicious. Loved the well cooked steak. We will definitely be back soon

Perfect atmosphere, service and food! We orerded the Rigatoni with shrimps and it was really delicious! The service was outstanding, friendly and professional! Last but not least, I loved the background music as it was super romantic 80ies soft rock ;)

Delicious food and good menu.

My family and I returned to dine at this restaurant after 5 years. I can honestly say, that the service, food and atmosphere are exactly what we thoroughly enjoyed and remembered experiencing from the past. It was my sons 18th birthday and Angelina, the waitress helped incredibly to ensure that we had a wonderful time and she was a delightful young lady. My son was sung to and treated to a birthday dessert. What a memorable and heart warming way to end our evening. Thank you so much to the manager and other staff for giving us such fantastic customer service and making us feel welcomed, valued and appreciated. We, of course, will recommend you to our friends, family and loved ones, and look forward to dining again at the restaurant, as the food was divine and most definitely worth the money.

The restaurant is clean and stylish. The menu is extensive and the food we enjoyed was tasty and of high quality. The service is excellent and the customers are also taken care of. I think the price level is also right in relation to the overall experience and quality.

Cosmos

Restaurant
Nestled on the first floor, Cosmos offers an enchanting view of the sea that instantly soothes the soul. The climb to this gem is absolutely worth it! Having returned after 15 years, visitors reminisce about their honeymoon and find that Cosmos remains a top dining destination in Crete. The ambiance exudes class, while each dish delivers pure joy to your palate. Friendly service enhances the experience, making you feel like you've discovered a slice of paradise.
Hello. What a place. This visit was incredible :) Food 10+, views same. Service same. Best evening for ever. Thank you for giving us good memories for rest of our life :) Amazing good food. We was lucky to get nice table with good views to sun set, seaview and 7.9.2025 was full lunar eclipse. What an evening. Thanks for perfect day for us.
Roni K — Google review
Had dinner at the Cosmos Restaurant a few weeks ago and was blown away and wanted to make sure I wrote a review to thank the restaurant. To find the restaurant you have to walk up a hill and through winding streets which only added to the experience. Walking into the restaurant reveals an AMAZING view overlooking the sea...just breathtaking! Their hospitality and customer service was excellent...they really care about their customers. We sat on the rooftop towards the back bar (the rooftop was full) which was fine because there is not a bad view in the restaurant. Dinner was DELICIOUS! We had a greek salad (standard) Lamb Shank with mashed potatoes, Pasta, Moussaka and Zucchini balls that we shared. Paired with a delicious Nostos Blend red wine from Crete which was recommended by the owner.... the meal was heavenly. We ended the meal with the best Galaktoboureko I have ever had. Thank you Cosmos Restaurant. One of the most memorable meals I have ever had and I will surely be back as soon as possible! Until then, I will relive the experience in the photos! :)

Amazing food and the staff was great too. Recommend to book a table around 7 E.M to watch the sun setting behind the mountains of Crete. The perfect place for a romantic evening or a wonderful time with friends or family that you will definitely remember!

Cosmos is the best restaurant in Platanias. It’s worth the walk up the hill! Don’t miss this experience. Nice view, nice atmosphere (not noisy and full of tourists) quite and calm, delicious food and very good service. We will for sure be back
Hanne R — Google review
We were here on our honeymoon in 2010, and after 15 years we returned to Chania. Many things have changed but this place still is the best restaurant of Crete to us. It is very classy and the food is pure happines in our mouth. If you count with that the very friendly service, you just know you arrived in a little paradise. One extra tip: make sure to arrive on time to see the marvelous Sunset from the rooftop terras! What a view, it will make you experience one of your purest memories of this beautiful Island.
Geert B — Google review
Absolutely amazing restaurant! The panorama view is worth a visit itself! The food was amazing and it arrived quickly. Also, round of applause for our waiter George who was just amazing!! Highly recommend :)
Tomine M — Google review
Summary: great view, tasty food, good service. We visited Comos yesterday, so memories are still fresh. Let's begin with location. It's a climb. I recommend taking a 10Eur taxi on your way there and having a nice walk back after a meal. Restaurant surroundings are quite rustic, but the place itself is fine. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, that was not shy on smalltalk. Sooner than later she introduced us to our waiter, we were seated and received menus. First impression - BOY THEY DO HAVE THE VIEW! Quick tip: book your table 30 minutes to sunset, otherwise terrace is a sauna. And you really want to seat at the terrace, as close to the edge as possible for best spectacle. Waiter was friendly and competent. Main course recommendation, asked about beverages and left us to decide. If anyone from Cosmos staff is reading - guys, a bottle of table water should just be there, like always. Buy a water filter and just serve it free. Food was really good. Both presentation and execution. We had calamari, swordfish tartare and some mushroom in sauce as starters. Bread (not complimentary) was fresh and warm. Main courses: tomato pasta, shrimp pasta, tuna (I guess it was sous vide then quickly grilled just for "grill marks", correct me if I'm wrong), lamb. Nothing to complain about. Not grand cru levels, but considering affordable price - excellent. Selection of wines, mostly local which I appreciated was good, both quality and price -wise. Waiter was able to offer an advice, though he's not a sommelier and it shows. We were ordering bottles and were presented with them properly. There was a tiny hicckup with a waiter when he forgot my glass or red that I ordered extra just for the lamb. Nothing terrible though. Funny I asked just for a "red that goes well with lamb" hoping for a Shiraz and they must have read my mind as I got exactly that! Wrapping up - Cosmos is a great place to spend an evening. Nice music (most of the evening they played Fado), good service, not too posh yet a bit higher tone than most of the restaurants in lower Platanias. Food worth the extra price. View quite priceless. I can easily recommend.
Piotr Ł — Google review
Absolutely fantastic view, which is worth the visit alone. The food was also incredible, and the Vanilla Dream desert is to die for. The service was also amazing, and a special shoutout to George, who was always smiling and joking around. We had to visit again just for him.

Kyano beach restaurant

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Kyano is a fantastic seaside spot for relaxation and dining. I highly recommend trying the intriguing Orange wine from Anatolikos Vineyards, which is fermented and aged unfiltered with native yeasts. This unique wine showcases its authenticity by displaying visible residues inside the bottle. It offers a nostalgic taste of ancient winemaking traditions. On the palate, one can detect hints of apricot, honey, pineapple, and orange peel. While the food may not be extraordinary, the service is exceptional.
Fantastic place with outstanding food and atmosphere. We tried both ceviches, prawn, mushrooms pasta and Greek spreads. All delicious and fresh. Big thanks to the amazing waiter (sorry I don't know his name) for making us feel welcome and taking care of us. Shame that we discovered that place so late. Highly recommended
Renata S — Google review
Beach restaurant, we got a table with a view of the ocean, outside. We ordered carbonara and chicken souvlaki, very good and normal sized portions. Atmosphere was very good, and the waiters were very nice. Price very normal a price to other restaurant nearby. Recommend this place!

✨ Feedback for Kyano ✨ What an incredible experience! Everyone here is so welcoming, smiling, and truly professional. The food is absolutely delicious — fresh, perfectly prepared, and full of flavor. You can really feel the passion and dedication in everything they do. I can’t wait to come back soon! Congratulations to this amazing team for making every guest feel special and for doing everything possible to create such a wonderful atmosphere. 💙👏💖

What a superb restaurant. If your in the area, near the area or driving through I highly recommend this restaurant. It's right on the beach with a lovely view out to sea.uou can use the sunbeds if you are a customer. Everywhere was clean and tidy. The staff were so friendly and polite and looked smart in thier uniforms. We ordered a prosciutto pizza and a kleftiko lamb. For dessert we had tiramisu and baklava with ice cream. To drink we had still water and a large draught lager. The bill came to €64. The food tasted so nice and fresh. It was delicious. We are definitely going back again. Please check the photos for the menu as there is something for everyone. Thank you for an amazing meal.

Perfect place for a quick drink or a meal. Facing the ocean if you can ignore all the sun bathing tourists. Prices are descent and the staff very friendly. The big trees gives a nice shade and atmosphere. Fine last meal before traveling home. Pork souvlaki and a Greek sallad and the views of the Mediterranean sea.

Once in a while you stumble across a super lunch spot. Great beach front location, friendly staff, great quality food and choices. Seabass cerviche really fresh

Good service, delicious food and a nice atmosphere! Had the moussaka and club sandwich, which we both enjoyed ☺️
Mariell M — Google review
The best crème brûleé I've ever tasted, the price is a little high, but that reflects in the food. Great service and nice staff. Beautiful evening with a great table close to the beach looking at the sunset and the waves.

Waves Restaurant

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Waves Restaurant is a delightful dining spot that offers an exquisite culinary experience right by the sea. Guests rave about the generous portions and reasonable prices, making it a fantastic choice for those looking to indulge without breaking the bank. The staff is known for their attentive service, ensuring your wine glass stays full while you enjoy stunning ocean views and nearby caves. Diners have enjoyed dishes like the juicy Jack Daniel's Burger and traditional Greek meals, with many expressing satisfaction with both flavor and quantity.
We ate the ribeye steak with french fries and mashed potatoes and everything just melted in our mouths! Then we had the ”waves” dessert and it was like heaven on a plate!! Wines were also good and the service was 10/10 :) Lovely view to the sea and live music was a cherry on top! Very good experience and we will be coming back soon <3
Veera H — Google review
Amazing food. Went here everyday for lunch and was amazing every time. Expect slow service though. Took up to 30 min to get served at times, but the food was too good to not come back!
Sean R — Google review
Only has Pizza, but it was good. And just waters (soda/tonic). Very hard to rate, probably more like 3.8 stars overall, good, but not anything extra special. Service was ok, but finding that many restaurants here in Greece/Crete (and Santorini), get you started, but then you can feel a little forgotten. Atmosphere very nice listening to the crashing waves. Pricing listed more typical than what we had - appetizers, salad, entrees and drinks.
Sean W — Google review
We stayed at the Marika hotel and went to waves for our first night in Platanias as it was located in the hotel. The view and scenery of the restaurant are gorgeous! When we arrived we ordered a bread basket, and for starter we ordered a mushroom tart. It took about 25-30 minutes until the bread basket arrived with the mushroom tart. We would expect the basket to arrive pretty soon after ordering it. The bread also seemed like something you could get frozen from a grocery store and the presentation was not that appealing. The tart seemed to be straight from the oven as it was pretty hot, but it was way too much crust compared to filling. However the taste of the filling was good. We were still chewing the last bit of our starter/bread when they came with our main course and asked if we were done. We expected to get some time in between to let the food settle. For the main course we ordered a Greek salad and moussakas. The portions were big and the vegetables seemed fresh. The moussaka tasted good, but it was very greasy and the potato/other filling ratio was leaning towards more potatoes. It is a beautiful restaurant, but don’t know if we would go there if it wasn’t for us staying at the hotel. The pricing is also fair, but some starters were a bit expensive. We also wish there were more Cretan/Greek items for starters on the menu.

what to say.....top...TOP👍🏻 This place is just fantastic, the CREW here is so nice, they work so good together, the 2 head waiters LUAN and GIORGOS are so good , they see it all, and get the Restaurent running in a nice way. If they was working for me, i would pay them a very good salery, because they are good for business.👍🏻 A very BIG kiss and thanks to the super staff..waiters/helpers PAUOS- MARIOS-EFFIE-AGGELOS-Eleftheria Prices at ok, because the amount of food, and the quality is very much in top, so a good cook. The place of the restaurant..top top too... just next to the sea so in the evening you eat in sun down. This place i sure recommend to dine. HELLO FROM THE DANISH FAMILY from VIGEN METTE - KIM
Kim C — Google review
Though the dishes look really nice they lack flavour. You have to ask twice for the food or beverage and then they'll bring you food that was for another table. While we were thinking about getting dessert they came already with the bill, so we decided not to order further.
Alejandra F — Google review
Really amazing food, and a lot of it too for quite a reasonable and kind price! Staff were very polite and ensured the wine glass was never empty! Very cozy place, and looking at the quality of food, the price is quite low! Very satisfied. Also beautiful view of the ocean and the cave across from the beach. Pictured is the Jack Daniel's Burger, really juicy and tasteful. Couldn't finish as it was so much! My mother tried one of the Greek traditional dishes and was very pleased!
Kris H — Google review
Well, it looks nice with a great view of the ocean, but the staff hasn't smile since childhood and they sometimes even seems to feel annoyed about customers ordering. Better take a walk 20 meters to the west and you'll find Carpe Diem. Nice and friendly restaurant.

Palio Arhontiko

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Palio Arhontiko is a charming taverna that has become a beloved spot for families and food enthusiasts alike. Nestled in the picturesque Kolymbari, it offers an inviting atmosphere where guests can enjoy delightful local dishes crafted with care. The warm hospitality of Vasili and his family makes every visit special, creating lasting memories over meals like their famous meatballs with ouzo sauce and fresh mussels.
I came here two times in a row and both of the times I LOVED the experience. Not only was the food incredible, but so was the ambiance and staff. Friendly, professional, but also able to be light hearted. We were greeted with 2 glasses of bubbles on the house and got free drinks and a small dessert at the end. The food was amazing as well, albeit it being a lot. Not as much as a Cretan wedding (so I am told) but still enough that I was not able to finish it. The location is great as well! It is very relaxing to eat fish while looking out over the beach and sea. 10/10, would go again if I am close!
Victor W — Google review
The food was absolutely delicious, especially the squid. The service was excellent as well – we even got a raki and some tasty little cakes for dessert, free of charge. The view was truly amazing, and we felt very comfortable and welcome throughout our stay. The starters were particularly tasty too. Prices were completely reasonable. We would definitely love to come back!

Beautiful place on the beach, familiar ambience with very tasty food and a nice view. Friendly but professional staff. Food was great (ribs were a little bit dry but not old😁), tasty and fresh . Place is clean , good prices and great portions. All in one a must try if you’re nearby
Robert O — Google review
Great food, the fish is fresh and super tasty (beware of roaming cats that might snatch it off your plate…), very good for the price. Very nice terrace with unencumbered view of the sea, service is nice, honey raki and small desert on the house. I will come back if I have the opportunity !

It is one of our favorite places in Crete. We have been here twice, and both visits were unforgettable. Best tzatziki I ever had! ❤️ Special thanks to Stavros for the best service ever.

Definitely visiting again. Creative and authentic good. Using olive oil in all their cooking. Creative dishes and a great selection. Also love the views and the breeze cooling us down whilst enjoying the atmosphere.

We stayed for a day on their I beachside sun beds, which are free of charge if you consume from their menu. Great location, polite and nice staff. Shrimp basket was absolute heaven! Loved this place and recommending it!

Cugini

$$$$affordable
Italian restaurant
Cugini is a delightful dining spot that promises an enjoyable experience, whether you make a reservation or not. Many guests have found themselves seated within minutes, eager to dive into the menu. The standout dish seems to be their pizza, particularly the white margarita, which has left quite an impression on visitors. For those looking for a quick meal, Cugini delivers with speedy service and delicious options like garlic bread and truffle beef pasta.
Wow! We didn’t book a table beforehand, but we waited only about five minutes before receiving a table. I would recommend booking a table. I ordered a pizza, it was maybe the best pizza I’ve ever had before! Lovely. Tried the «white margarita» which was amazing, and I am not normally a fan of drinks. We already booked a table for the day before we leave, we just have to try the pasta- would be a shame not to!
Rebekka B — Google review
Been here twice this vacation. Best bruschetta I have ever tasted and the hamburger was amazing. Drinks really good and service great.
Sjöfn A — Google review
It was absolutely delicious. We went there twice in the span of 4 days. The pizza's are between 11-16 euro and are just amazing. It does get a little busy so making a reservation for a bigger group is best. Vegetarian pizza was amazing
Lisa A — Google review
You don’t have to wait long to get the food here. Perfect for a quick bite! I recommend getting the garlic bread and the pasta with truffle and beef if you are there. We also tried some other dishes, but the ones I mentioned were the ones we liked there. The only bad thing is that it is located right next to the main road, so if you get a table near the outside it is gonna be a lot of noise.
Elisabeth H — Google review
Best pasta ive eaten! Staff is Happy and very kind, you dont have to want for too long for the food, price is good. Me and my girlfriend ate here 4 times on our 7 day vacation, big plus is we stay in Marika Hotel 1m from the restaurant 🙌🏼👍🏼
Sebastian J — Google review
We ordered Pizza to take away and we didn’t even wait for 10 Minutes. The waiters were really nice and the pizza itself was amazing. There were enough options, for everybody to find something.
Carolin — Google review
We dined here twice because the food was simply outstanding. The service was warm, friendly, and professional, and our meals were served fairly quickly. Although the prices are slightly on the higher side, the excellent flavors and quality ingredients make it well worth it. Definitely one of the top restaurants in Platanias!
Ismo A — Google review
It was easy enough to get a table, even without a reservation. We had been looking forward go going , based on reviews, but did not quite live up to expectations. The food was nice enough, the service was adequate, and prices quite reasonable, but did feel a little like just another Euro in the till, so to speak. We won't be returning any time soon.

Mylos tou Kerata

Temporarily Closed
$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Nestled in the charming village of Platanias, just 11 km from Chania, Mylos tou Kerata stands as one of Crete's oldest taverns, steeped in history since its establishment by Dimitris Kavros Mylos in 1960.
Mylos is always great food. The quality is top notch, both regard taste and looks. And the establishment is beautiful. Only one thing is repeating itself ... Often the table are not cleared after starters when the main dish arrives. It is an error that drags down the otherwise luxurious experience down.
Lisbeth F — Google review
Incredibly beautiful restaurant, a must see as words do not describe. Although ingredients fresh and locally sourced, the menu is due for a revamp. Fall dishes with root purées and a tad on the « trying too hard » side of menu items.
Koko E — Google review
Outstanding place for a romantic candlelight dinner. The ambiance is exquisite. The food itself is very delicious yet could use a bit less salt. Service level is top notch 10/10 recommend to try this place out They give a nice fruit basket after the meal for a nice sweet treat
Waqar A — Google review
Amazing, from all the points of view: food, service and atmosphere. The whole place is gorgeous, we visited at night and the terrace looked wonderful and welcoming. The service was very friendly and helpful, our waiter taking the time to make sure we feel very welcome; having friendly chats about our countries foods/beverages and places (it was a pleasant surprise to find out he visited Romania several times). Definitely a must check out for anyone that happens to be around 😊

I’ve been to this restaurant in Platanias twice now, and both times were absolutely wonderful! The service is exceptional – the staff are attentive, warm, and very knowledgeable, which makes the whole experience feel extra special. The food is amazing, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. I also really appreciated how clearly everything was marked on the menu, with plenty of gluten-free options, which made choosing dishes easy and stress-free. The atmosphere is lovely, relaxed, and welcoming, and the beautiful views make it an even more memorable place to enjoy a meal. It’s rare to find a restaurant that ticks all the boxes, but this one truly does. Highly recommended!!

Incredible resturant from the food to the people to the vibe just beautiful, the food is both fresh and delicious. Our waiter for the night came around with shots for everyone and was both funny and incredibly nice, when we went to pay the power went out so we had to wait an additional 30 or so minutes but the people there made it feel like 5 minutes, we were taken very good care off. Both the appetizers and the main course were amazing!

An absolutely fantastic culinary experience with phenomenal views. Very friendly and attentive service. All the food we had was exceptional. Plenty of complimentary drinks provided as well to cap off our evening. The views are truly spectacular! Make sure you book in advance and try to request a table as close to the view as possible. This experience was truly memorable. Possibly one of the best restaurants we have dined at over our last few years of travelling over 25 countries in four continents!!

Absolutely fantastic place to eat, a hidden gem with the most wonderful view. An incredibly charming and warm waiter who you can really tell loves his job. Some of the best food I've tasted in a long time, and really delicious cocktails
Trine K — Google review
We had a lovely meal here with a stunning view. Unfortunately the waiters made the experience not very enjoyable. They were constantly screaming around to talk to one another and pass on orders. Also otherwise they did not deliver the service level and friendliness we have experienced so far in Crete. Great food but rather stressful environment to eat in.
Lotti — Google review
We took a liking to this place after our accidental hike while exploring the upper streets of Platanias. We climbed the old wooden stairs and emerged right in the garden of this restaurant with a beautiful view of the sea and Agia Marina. The friendly owner gifted us with two chilled waters after the climb. We had to come back here and had a delicious Greek salad. They also have excellent cocktails, as we found out a few days later on our last evening in Crete. A lovely farewell. I hope we will be back.
Martin V — Google review
We visited Astrea twice during our vacation, and both experiences were excellent. The staff were highly professional and attentive, making us feel genuinely welcomed and well taken care of. To start, we had garlic bread with tzatziki, which was incredibly flavorful. For the main course, I had the beef fillet on both visits — it was, without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had in Platanias. Perfectly cooked, tender, and bursting with flavor, it was served with a delicious mix of grilled vegetables, sweet potato mash, and sweet potato chips. Every element on the plate complemented the meat beautifully. We will absolutely be returning for another outstanding meal and the nice view.

Pirgos

$$$$affordable
Greek restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Crete, Pirgos is a culinary gem that has captured the hearts of many visitors since its inception. My husband and I first discovered this delightful restaurant back in 2019, and we were so enchanted by our experience that we returned three times during our week-long stay. Fast forward to 2025, and we're once again indulging in its charm for another week, having already dined there twice!
The first time my husband and I went to this place was in 2019 and it was so incredible back then, that we went back 3 times during our 1 week stay in Crete! Now in 2025, we're also staying for one week and we've already visited twice! The atmosphere is cosy, inviting and warm, and the staff are funny and welcoming. The food is amazing, with lots of flavour and big portions. Absolutely such a wonderful restaurant! Every time I'm in Crete, I will be back. ☺️

beautiful food here and we are really fussy. We only like the best and don’t mind paying for the best. our gin and tonics were the perfect strength so not weak at all and the food was exquisite because is was so fresh and cooked to perfection. my tuna salad even had my favorite dip on top - taramasalata and when i added avocado it was too good.

You feel welcome by the whole staff. Menu competence and good cretan wine. Sea bass and spareribs were both deligthful. Greek music in the speakers but not too loud. Close by the road but not ruining the relaxed atmosphere. People from many countries visiting from the hotels nearby. We will be back!

Excellent service and funny waiters. Lamb chops was a bit dry, but pizza and pasta worked well.

We had spaghetti carbonara and spaghetti with shrimp. Both were very good, with large filling portions and great sauce. Service could be better, given that we were there in the early afternoon with limited acitivity. Place is in general cute, but also had limited fans and no aircondition as is the norm for crete, so order ice if its warm!

The restaurant features a lovely terrace adorned with grapevines, providing stunning views of sunsets and lush gardens—perfect for a peaceful meal away from the hustle and bustle.
Dined here with my family after a long day at the beach. Cute terrace restaurant not on the main road so it’s very peaceful. Terrace seating overlooking the sunset and garden seating, both amazing. Service was amazing, everyone was very welcoming and helpful. The food was fresh, delicious, offering traditional Greek cuisine with many vegetarian options. Big portions! You won’t leave Hungary that’s for sure. Beautiful grave vines covering the terrace and nice relaxing music. Very reasonably priced for the quality of foods. Complimentary dessert at the end. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a tradition Greek Taverno off the main road.

Another fine restaurant in this area. We had saganaki cheese, dolmadakis and mixed grill plate. All the food was delicious. Only thing I can complain a little bit about was that the pork pieced on the skewer were a bit dry while chicken on the same skewer was still more or less juicy. I can also recommend the Monakrivo red wine - a bit smoother that syrah by itself. For 25€ in a restaurant this is absolutely a bargain. For the finish they brought a kind of biscuit cake with cacao (and raki of course) which brings me back to childhood.

One of the best spots for dinner. We went to Astria and this beat it by far. Very nice staff, cozy and cute. Great view and perfect food. Definitely worth the dinner stop and easy to walk from the main street up the hill.

1st meal in Crete, definitely not the last from this family-run taverna. We had the traditional plate and the lamb kleftiko, wanted to add fish but staff was very upfront that it would be too much (which I appreciate they seem genuinely not in it for the money). Service was good, not a long wait and even served dessert on the house. Everything was delicious!

The must visit ! Family restaurant, with amazing food and hospitality, husband and wife looking after customers, mum is cooking, true greek experience. We have been spoiled. Traditional plate has it all, and is huge! 7 meals ordered, and 7 super happy customers ! Thank you and well done to family. Big shout to mama!

Fantastic place with wonderful family atmosphere. The best restaurant in Platanias with traditional food. I love it here and I sure come back here. Thank you so much. You are amazing.

Now this is what I call a Restaurant, with capital R! Everything was so nice and fine, you should wear a suit there, if only the weather wasn't too hot for that 😁! Really traditional Greek food and soooo tasty, but no way either of adults could finish their plates no matter how big of a fight we gave it. Good wine, good local drinks, fresh fresh fresh food, the fish was still little little bit flopping on the plate, though cooked already to perfection 👌! Just so yummy! 🙏 And also the restaurant itself had so many perfect little details and plantations that suited so nicely together, making atmosphere so nice! Thank you for the nice ending to our trip here on Crete! Absolute best!

Amazing dinner at Agioklima in Platanias! The stifado was exceptional – melt-in-your-mouth tender and packed with rich, authentic flavor. Every dish we tried was incredibly tasty, and the warm, welcoming service made the experience even better. A true gem in Platanias – highly recommended!

Transportation in Platanias

Getting around Platanias can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

International airport
Airport
Chania International Airport Ioannis Daskalogiannis is located 15 km from Chania town on the east side of Crete. It serves as a hub for domestic flights from Athens and Thessaloniki year-round, as well as seasonal flights from various European countries during the summer. The airport offers convenient transportation options such as KTEL bus and taxi services to the center of Chania. The modern and clean terminal provides efficient security and passport control, along with well-maintained facilities.
Review for summer 2025: Good parking area and drop-off area outside, plenty of car rentals nearby, world known as well as local car rental companies. There are free trolleys for your luggage, you do require a 1 Euro coin to use it, afterwards you'll get back the coin. Small in size as a whole airport, limited options after security control however you could find duty free shops (with inflated prices) and some coffee shops and get something to eat. As with most airports you better eat BEFORE arriving at the airport. A SIGNIFICANT PLUS: immediately after the security check, there is a water disposable point (fountain) FREE OF CHARGE. Either keep your empty containers after you are forced to empty or bring a dedicated empty water bottle. At the moment I've passed, more than 90 thousand plastics bottles were avoided to be purchased by using this water dispenser. We need more similar approaches in all European airports. Rest assured, bottled water, both sparkling and flat were still available to be purchased at around 2-3 € per 500ml in the shops. Bathrooms are a bit hidden, only 1 location after security check, somehow place right in the middle of the duty-free shop. They were all spotlessly clean in an early morning. Transfer to airplane, to a Ryanair was allowed on foot, there was only a 50m distance. Transfer from the airplane to arrivals terminal was carried out with a bus. Quite a small airport for amount of people not loads of seats but should be able to find one! Few restaurants. All pretty similar. There is a burger and pizza place towards gates 15 which are easily missed if you fancy something that isn't a sandwich. Big duty free with lots of products both local and the usual culprits. There is only one water fountain that we saw just after security. You can go back once in the gate area, back through duty free. UK flights go from 13-16 id suggest getting watter bottles filled and food purchased before going through the passport booths. As no fountains and only 1 food option. There is a small duty free. On a positive note we left our suitcase on the plane and was in left luggage before we got through passport control so can't fault the lost property operation!

Small airport. Arrival experience quite fast in getting through passport control and picking up checked baggage. Water fountain for refilling water bottles available through secure area in arrivals. Very little in the arrivals hall - maybe one shop/cafe and car rentals. Departure areas not huge either, with 4-5 very expensive food places and duty free (eg pastries and beverages typically over €4-5). Not tons of seating but able to find a spot. A couple of charging spots (particularly at gate 11).

Luckily our checked in baggage was collected at the hotel before departure from the hotel to the airport. Smooth security as it was a midnight flight. Decent tax free, too many flights at the same time for the departure hall. Lots of people not having the place to sit. Even parents with breastfeeding children had challenges to get a seat. Too few restaurants and absolutely no bars in the departure hall. Seats from the time I was born, not maintained and cleaned. Poor cleaning, but again, I see the challenge as it’s too many people for the departure hall. Positive thing is the friendly staff at the airport. Poor air quality as well of course due to the amount of people. But hey, it’s a charter airport…..

Chania Airport has made significant improvements in recent years. The proximity of the aircraft to the terminal, the hassle-free entry, and finding rental cars are all very straightforward. Unfortunately, on my last visit, the enthusiasm for baggage tracing was limited when, after losing my suitcase, I was handed a meager, photocopied slip of paper. On the day of departure, I finally got my suitcase back in time for check-in for the return flight, but that was also due to Discover Airlines, which hadn't taken the suitcase from Frankfurt (late evening checkin). Otherwise, the departure area at the gates has been well redesigned, with good snacks in the morning. Departure and security are friendly and uncomplicated. During peak season, be at the check-in counter in good time to drop off your luggage, as spaces are limited. Everything is very clean, friendly, and well signposted. The rental car area is across the street from the exit. Some rental car companies are located on the far left side of the terminal. For me, it's a better alternative than Heraklion, as it's more clearly laid out. I'm looking forward to arriving in LGSA / CHQ next time this year.

Remarkably busy for a regional airport, like completely full. Seems a bit undersized for the number of flights and passengers it's serving. Reminds me of packed airports in the Caribbean, or if you took the crowd level of CLT and shrunk it down in size. No jet bridges. Highly recommend checking in online if you can avoid checking bags; you can breeze through security while a big crowd is waiting for the check-in desks to open.

Typical airport, need better signage and support on access. Was quite unclear of direction, where to go, how to access the city, after exiting the airport. It was even unclear how to get to baggage claim after getting off the plane as the arrow on the floor is so small and narrow while the hanging signs aren't clear and frequently appear. Could hardly tell the difference between charter bus and public bus, and they are located at the area with minimal directions and guidance. That would create congestion to clear people flow during high season.

I'm changing my impression. Not at all friendly to smokers. One smoking room could be made. Large spacious halls. Luggage received quickly. Parking with buses nearby. The toilet was clean. Not many eateries before departure, so there may be a queue for coffee.
