Museum Dunkerque 1940 Operation Dynamo

Mentioned on
8 lists
War museum
Museums
The Museum Dunkerque 1940 Operation Dynamo is located in WWII casemates and offers a comprehensive look at the history of the 1940 Battle of Dunkirk. It focuses on Operation Dynamo, which saw over 330,000 Allied soldiers evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk between May 26th and June 4th. The museum features exhibits with memorabilia such as vehicles, sea mines, guns, military clothing, and flak cannons.
The Operation Dynamo Museum in Dunkirk is a fascinating and moving place to visit. It's located in the original command post used during the evacuation, which makes the experience feel even more real. The exhibits are well-organized, with a lot of personal stories, artifacts, and a short film that really brings the history to life. It’s not a huge museum, but it’s packed with information and easy to follow. Being so close to the actual beaches adds even more meaning. The staff were friendly and helpful too. If you're interested in World War II history, it’s definitely worth a visit!
Starodub T — Google review
We thought this was a great little museum! Obviously not as big and flash as a museum in a major city but we learned loads about Operation Dynamo, lots of nice artefacts and everything written in both English & French so easy to follow. Easy to get round in about an hour/hour and a half and they have toilets. Good value especially with the couples ticket. Would recommend
Verity K — Google review
What a lovely, clean, and well-presented museum. The displays are clear, the exhibits are of real quality, and the supplementary information is well written and highly informative. The museum follows the modern style of presentation that many institutions are moving towards, but what truly sets it apart is the lighting. Unlike so many museums that are overly dim, this one is perfectly lit with warm, bright lighting that makes every exhibit easy to see. The effect is both inviting and engaging, creating an atmosphere that encourages you to take your time and really absorb the experience.
MilPoPo — Google review
Great experience, the main reason for my visit to Dunkirk as my Grandfather was on the beach there. Fantastic museum bringing the story and horror's of this historic event, as well as commemorating the fallen. Great entry price 7 euro .
Derek D — Google review
Fantastic museum, small but jam packed full of information and artifacts. Information boards written in French and English and presented in easy to follow formats. Plenty of artifacts from uniforms and weapons to parts of tanks. The dioramas and maps of the operation were really interesting and with the museum being so close to the beach it made it a lot easier to visualise the extent of it. For €10 you can get a joint ticket to both here and Fort des Dunes.
Dayna T — Google review
A fantastic insight into the history of Operation Dynamo. A reminder to the sacrifice that was made for our longstanding freedom. Worth visiting and keeping the memory alive. Cheap to enter.
Nathan M — Google review
This modest but fascinating museum is ideal for WW2 nuts and gun fans, also logistical exhibits such as ammo and mortar shell boxes. For 2025 it's so cheap for admission, maybe that's a good marketing ploy as it encourages extra spending in the shop. No cafe but hey it's France, so there are many nearby. Wonderful photographs on display and a few real relics dug up from under the sand. Even my small children loved it, really glad we went there. Parking's dead easy too - and free.
Matthew V — Google review
Lovely museum, extremely informative and very well presented in a 19th century, preserved bunker. Excellent layout, lovely staff and great displays with some very poignant items. Completely wheelchair accessible with no issues whatsoever. Well worth a visit.

Saint-Éloi Catholic Church at Dunkirk

Mentioned on

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
Saint-Éloi Catholic Church in Dunkirk is a Gothic architectural gem known for its history and wartime scars. The church, dating back to the 16th century, bears bullet holes from World War II on its facade. Inside, visitors can admire the rose window and the tomb of Jean Bart.
Nice ! Best to combine with the visit of the Belfry just next to (which was before linked to this church)
Nona V — Google review
Saint-Eloi’s Church was burnt in 1558 and nearly destroyed by French troops. Early 1560 the city decided to rebuild the church and assigned master- builder, Jean de Renneville, to restore it. The church was rebuilt with Gothic flamboyant style, then enlarged and increased solidity by another architect. The major restoration were necessary after the damage caused by the two world wars, the last one ended in 1985.

Very impressive old church, real nice and sceneric 🏆🏅

A must place to vosit. I would definitely suggest to go on top of the tower (they have a lift!)
Santiago C — Google review
Beautiful Church , but was closed because of Corona , but very good surroundings , explore the area , cafe's, restaurants , shopping and more history
Janka D — Google review
Beautiful cathedral. Beautiful architecture and art.
Senad B — Google review
Beautiful cathedral showing shell damage from WW2 on the entrance wall
Arthur D — Google review
I visited the tower to catch the view, which is amazing. You can see the city and the sea from the top. Also there are photos and information indicating the buildings you are viewing from the top(very good to note where you are heding next. There is an escalator which takes you 5 floors up and then you have to climb a couple of steps

Mentioned on
5 lists
Bergues, a charming commune in northern France, is often referred to as "the other Bruges in Flanders." Situated just south of Dunkirk and near the Belgian border, this picturesque town is known for its medieval walls and winding canals that create a typical Flemish atmosphere. The highlight of Bergues is its impressive belfry, the Beffroi de Bergues, which is recognized by UNESCO.

Port Museum of Dunkirk

Museums
The Port Museum of Dunkirk, located in a former tobacco warehouse dating back to 1869, offers an immersive experience into the maritime history of Dunkirk. The museum features interactive exhibits, period film footage, and panoramic displays showcasing the city's centuries-old reliance on its port. Visitors can explore detailed scale models of ships spanning nearly four centuries and learn about the strategic significance of Dunkirk's location on the Channel.
Small museum with many ship models and city history. You will visit real ships and imagine life on board (engine room as well as where sailors sleep and live). Museum tickets and ship tour tickets are two different types of tickets. I visited the museum in the morning and they said to visit the ship you have to come back in the afternoon after 2pm. Hope this information is useful for everyone to arrange their time reasonably!
Rachel N — Google review
Interesting timeline history of the ancient port of Dunkerque. French style "sense de la visite" layout (you're ushered along a predetermined route rather than being at liberty to wander). Reasonable amount of multilingual interpretation but significant gaps might hinder the understanding of those without any French understanding (or a translator on their phone). Lots of excellent models, plans and photos over three floors. Took us about 3 hours.
Andrew B — Google review
You pay 8€ for adults and you can visit 3 boats, Duchess Anne included, and 3 étages of the museum building. It was quite interesting to pick up on the board and to see the real boat which was given as a part of reparations after WWll from Germany to France. However the museum is a bit boring. Yes, it's absolutely renovated with an interesting design inside, but not enough actions or at least the possibility to take a guide excursion. So you are just walking from stand to stand, from ship to ship and that's all.
Oksana S — Google review
Great museum and tells the story of Dunkirk over the centuries very well. Well worth your time and more engaging than the Operation Dynamo museum (alas). Note you can get a duo ticket for both museums that saves you on some admission fare but that pass only seems available here as the sign wasn’t readily visible at the ticket counter at the Operation Dynamo museum.
Leena B — Google review
Really interesting museum of Dunkirk maritime history and more. I particularly liked the three boats you can visit outside. To be honest, if you have to choose between the maritime or the operation Dynamo museum, the maritime museum wins hands down, more eclectic, bigger collection and obviously covers many more topics
Matthew D — Google review
There are many things to see. Unfortunately there is very limited information in English. Very disappointed with this. There were also videos of Port History at different places, still in French. Overall the museum is nice, but the language makes it hesitant to recommend. Being an international place this problem should be taken into consideration.
Harikrishanan V — Google review
Lovely place, reasonable prices, lovely scale models that a lot of love has gone in to. Lots of history of the area and friendly staff. Sadly not everything had an English translation but we managed to use Google Lens. :)

Plage de Malo-les-Bains is a historic beach in Dunkirk, known for its role in the famous WWII evacuation. It's a must-visit for history buffs and offers a relaxing escape for beach lovers, sunbathers, and families. The vast white sand beach stretches 7 kilometers and features a pedestrian promenade lined with restaurants and beach huts. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or even play beach volleyball.
What a splendid beach this is! Huge, clean, fine sand. Even in the winter, with a little bit of sun and the salty breeze, it offers a special occasion to soak up some calmness for one's soul.
Emil S — Google review
The place itself is historic because of its relevance in WW2 Dunkirk Dynamo operation. Aside from that its overcrowded and overpriced (restaurants and bars). We had overall bad customer service everywhere. Maybe best to visit in spring or fall.
Fashionista — Google review
A beautiful beach steeped in history, with a stunning promenade stretching as far as the eye can see, lined with restaurants and bars along the seafront. For those drawn by the past, the area is filled with plaques and information boards commemorating Operation Dynamo. I walked up through Dunkirk town, past the museum and over the bridge to the beach. At the end of the bridge stands a striking monument as a reminder of what took place here in 1940, but standing on the sand and looking out over the beautiful beach, it’s hard to imagine the scenes that unfolded here all that time ago.
Jer C — Google review
Nice atmosphere. Beach was quiet. Loads of space. And a war historians pilgrimage for me. Amazing to think of all the brave souls who were here before.
Cartz — Google review
Clean and huge and kilometer long beach area , very historical 1940 , as really nice to take a walk at the promenade , worth visiting for a nice ride on the bicycle , by walk or skateboard. Lots of parking possibilities , ice-cream , restaurants for nice lunch, there are toilets and showers and water to clean your sandy feet.
Janka D — Google review
The beach where the allied soldiers mostly managed to make it back to fight another day from. Bit eerie but a beautiful beach.... Just couldnt help thinking about all those guys huddled up here waiting for their turn and getting attacked the whole time while they were all so close to home.....
Peter M — Google review
Huge sandy beach, but the town behind the beach was a little run down and needed a bit of reviving. Lots of building work (March 2019), so looks like improvements are happening. Went on a cold and windy day so it was very quiet and atmospheric - can imagine it being a good place to relax & enjoy the sun on a warm summer day.
C C — Google review
One of my favorite beach in France, it's kilometers long, nice and sandy, and the water is shallow. There are bars and pubs with excellent food. I visited little time after watching the movie and I was impressed. The only thing is that the weather might be tricky in Dunkirk.

Lieu d’Art et Action Contemporaine de Dunkerque

Art Museums
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lieu d’Art et Action Contemporaine de Dunkerque is a spacious art museum featuring an extensive collection of over 1500 New Realist, Modern & Contemporary paintings and sculptures. The museum was established through generous donations of twentieth-century artworks and showcases pieces from the period of 1945 to 1980. Housed in a striking white ceramic building, it hosts two major temporary exhibitions, a sculpture garden, and offers free entrance on certain days.
This small museum of contemporary art is a little jewel immersed in a cute park hosting some installations. Free on the first Sundays of the month. There are no big names but the visit is pleasant and the building itself is interesting. The staff was super helpful. Recommended if you are in Dunkirk (French: Dunkerque).
Mario M — Google review
A beautiful building in a park that is still a work in progress. The park exhibits are stunning but the gallery collection needs working on. One can't argue about taste but for us and others around us there was zero wow-effect in the gallery. C'mon Dunkirk, France is heaving with great artists who would love to exhibit there.
Clive P — Google review
Great exhibition with many interesting art pieces. They even have some prospects giving context to the artists and their work. The staff was kind.
Tomáš F — Google review
Car parking was easy and free. The sculpture garden is free and has seating, it’s a lovely oasis if you’re just looking for a break and somewhere to sit. The gallery building is an impressive structure in itself. Set out on 3 floors the collection might not challenge the Pompidou but we found it worth the time and with a rotating exhibition programme it is somewhere we will return.
Maja H — Google review
Wasn't sure what to expect with this museum but ended up staying for almost 2 hours because of how taken I was by the art pieces here. Absolutely worth the visit.
Alton — Google review
Great selection of modern arts. Had a group of kids a d they loved it. Very inspirational and imaginative. Kids go free and EUR 4 for adults. But during holidays it's free at times.
Suresh A — Google review
Nice #modernart museum. Perfect for a rainy day or to find some shadow during hit days. Surprisingly good pieces at the firts floor, the ticket is just 4 euro hence there are no reason to akip it. The personal does not speak English but they are VERY friendly, hence, they are able to communicate anyhow.
Gabriele B — Google review
Sympathetic art exhibition that is well worth an hour of your time if you want to experience French post-modern art.

Visitors can also enjoy lively events such as the Dunkirk carnival, known for its raucous celebrations with colorful parades and traditional herring-throwing.
I visited Dunkrik once a year during summer and honestly no regret! Im in love with this historical city by the beach 😍 Great place for those who are seeking for peaceful and chilling getaway weekend 🌈
Phuong L — Google review
They have free public transport and the vehicles are always on time (which I rarely see in small cities..) The public transport is really clean and friendly. The town hall had a Christmas event with a huge line up, I only saw it from the outside.
Rachel N — Google review
Once I had chance to visit the city, actually it wasn't that bad as people said. the city has their history after 2nd world war and some building are restored obviously. They also have some nice restaurants which serve local foods. :)

It is known for its international collection of art and design, featuring pieces from well-known artists as well as up-and-coming talents. The museum aims to address present-day issues such as globalization and sustainable development through its diverse range of artworks.
Finally, a place where contemporary art is made accessible to everyone, with the support of a great team and interesting selection of artists. The venue itself is spectacular (old shipyard) and offers stunning views on Malo and Dunkirk.
N V — Google review
cool architecture & interesting art. good place to hide for a bit if the wind of northern "summer" is too much
Lenka J — Google review
I really liked this modern art museum, it has good location - close to the port and beach, interesting exhibitions on four floors, excellent children's play area for children on the ground floor - with lots of games and books. The ticket price for an adult is only 4€.
Elena G — Google review
This museum has a very nice collection of contemporary art. When we visited there was a joint exposition together with the other museum just across called Lieu d’Art et Action Contemporaine (Museum of Contemporary Arts). We enjoyed the visit that develops over 4 different floors that mix physical pieces of art, visual and digital art. I haven’t spotted big names but for sure there were many interesting pieces. The museum is modern and well kept. It extends on one warehouse which gives a very impactful atmosphere to the pieces exposed. There are a small bar and shop inside. We visited on the first Sunday of the month and the entrance was for free! Highly recommended when you are in Dunkerque.
Mario M — Google review
We loved the FRAC which is located in a building that is matching an adjacent container terminal next to the port of Dunkerque. Very nice exhibition celebrating the 40 year anniversary of the center and breathtaking views on the beach and North Sea coastline.
Karl W — Google review
A place for modern art, it is a bit disappointing, the place is huge and it is underexploited. It is financed by our taxes, so I believe they could allow for some concerts, latino dancing or other social events as they don't have any direct neighbors and there is a huge free parking next to it.
Eric V — Google review
Lots of interesting exhibits in a great post industrial building. Worth visiting. Lots of provocative pieces. Not always sure what's an exhibit and what's part of the building! It turned out that the "click, click, click" in the section that was inviting me to reflect on the constraints of time and space was not an installation but a bucket catching drips.
Graham C — Google review
That's rather an eccentric museum, that is not suitable for everyone, but if you are interested in contemporary art and modern activism and it's projection from a rather small artistic community, you won't be disappointed

Park
Bio-Topia Fort-Mardyck - Dunkerque is a small and peaceful zoo located on the western outskirts of the city. It houses around 50 species of wild and domestic animals from Europe, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts, conservationists, wildlife observers, and eco-conscious families. Despite its size, visitors find the zoo enjoyable with well-maintained habitats for animals. The ticket prices are surprisingly cheap considering the variety of animals present.
Brilliant small zoo. Ideal stop off on the way to Belgium and Netherlands.
Rob W — Google review
Absolutely great value for money. Only a few euros to get in, and you can easily spend an hour or so in there (if not more if you time it to see the feeding). Great place to spend extra time if you've just got off the ferry
James A — Google review
Really nice little zoo nestled within a residential area. Animal enclosures are nicely designed and obviously well looked after and the animals had a nice amount of space. Interesting selection of species, it was cool to see Jaguarundi as they aren't in many collections in the UK. You can probably walk around the whole place in around an hour but always worth walking around more to see the more elusive animals.
Dayna T — Google review
A rather small zoo, but enjoyable nonetheless. Surprisingly, on the day of my visit, it was pretty empty most of the time with very little visitors. Some of the habitats could definitely be a bit bigger, but generally, the animals do have a nice home here. Employees are friendly, but be advised that most of them speak little to no English, so you’d better brush up on your French. The ticket prices are really cheap - which actually surprises me with the amount of animals they harbor. There’s free parking, too. Overall, this is a nice place and I liked coming here.
Selina — Google review
Great zoo. Funny sheep. Slightly on the spectrum seals that just zoomed in circles. Lynx had babies and they fell off the top bit which was funny. Toilets were good.
Felix C — Google review
Nice small scale zoo. Lots of different animals to see.
Sebas J — Google review
Excellent value zoo, great range of small to mid size animals that are well cared for. Only €5 entry and a good gift shop. The route is not do well signed but it's at the far north of Dunkirk, satnav will take you there. Great for kids.
Zoomer46 Z — Google review
Great place to visit €4 each we spent about an hour or so there but with kids I guess a while longer there's a few activities centers for them and picnic tables half way round by the unisex toilets and the gift shop at the end.

The Saint-Éloi Belfry of Dunkirk, standing at 58 meters high, is a historic building that survived World War II and is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally constructed in the 13th century and later heightened in the 15th century, it served as the town's watchtower. Together with the City Hall Belfry, it forms The Dunkirk Belfries, both offering panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.
Great place to get an overview of the city. Only 5 euros to get in felt very reasonable. Some signs up the top highlighting the main sights.
Claire D — Google review
Amazing view of the toem from the top. Interesting to see the bells too. Staff were very helpful and friendly
Ali Q — Google review
Beautiful view from the top, especially at night. We went on one of their special "apero" nights and had a lovely cup of mulled wine and biscuits. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, definitely worth a visit.
Craig P — Google review
A great view of Dunkirk from the rooftop accessed through a narrow low stairway. Only a little vertigo due to the height of the wall. Lift takes you to the first stage part of the belltower. Staff were very helpful and spoke English very well and without reservation.
Mark G — Google review
Definitely worth a visit! Staffs from the tourist office were very friendly and helpful. They gave us a city map with bus schedule for our day trip in Dunkerque. 5€ for adulte to visit Saint Éloi Belfry was the best thing to do. Free for children under 7 years old. With a 360 observation desk that offers a mind-blowing view make this place the landmark of Dunkerque.
Fiona W — Google review
One of the best attractions in Dunkirk in my opinion, the Monday we went there was a lot of wait in the afternoon so we came back the next day and a bit earlier. We were able to get some places to go up and have a view of the city. You will have to walk a few stairs which are super tight and not a lot of space, warning if you are claustrophobic the climb is very unpleasant
Seka F — Google review
Went here on our holiday to Dunkirk and was impressed! It was only €5 which isn’t bad at all and the views are great! I would definitely tell anyone that visits Dunkirk give this place a go!

Unfortunately it was closed when I arrived but it was lovely to view from the outside nonetheless. There is a big parking clomped nearby and if you don’t mind walking for a bit you can park on the bingo parking lot for free.

Princess Elizabeth

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Princess Elizabeth is a historic little ship from the WW2 Dunkirk evacuation, now restored and serving as an excellent restaurant. The modern and comfortable decor, polite staff, and good selection of menu items cater to all tastes. The food is simple yet refined, with ingredients retaining their original flavors and house-prepared sauces adding unique tastes. While the service may not be fast, the deliciously cooked meals make it worth a visit for a wonderful dining experience on this iconic vessel.
Birthday lunch Easter 2025. Boat was lovely. Food was delicious but my daughter struggled to find vegetarian choices. She settled on the one identified dish which she assured us was really good. I recommend the French martini ! Nice atmosphere on board but menu on French ( i know, how dare they! 😂) and staff didn’t speak English well enough to describe dishes to us. So - have a look at the menu before you go is my tip of the day, it’s on their website. Well worth a visit and a memorable birthday lunch.
Lorraine M — Google review
We had a traditional menu for dinner, staff was friendly and we enjoyed the dishes. Prices are a bit overrated but it's justified with the location and the restaurant itself.
Lolita — Google review
The food was impeccable. I enjoyed being there, it was definitely an experience. The staff was friendly, however every time I was approached in French, even though it had been established that I didn't speak any. As a tourist I understand I'm the visitor, but I found it a bit pointless.
Karin B — Google review
Good quality, prices are somewhat adequate given that it is France and the location/story/setting of the restaurant. Service depends on the waiter, some were super friendly and explained & advised, others were more impersonal and quite robotic
Nikolay K — Google review
Poor. Visited as a large group. Veal starter was very acidic. Main was duck and was cold. Service far too rushed. Nice drinks. The real disaster and disappointment here was a dessert was spilled on my colleague’s knee whilst seated. Very poor apology. Would not visit again.
Matthew — Google review
Incredible restaurant on board the HMS Princess Elizabeth (who saved 1650 soldiers from Dunkirk in 1940). Beside the location the food, wines, cocktails, whisky and everything else is perfect, even the bill. A must.
Andrea P — Google review
We had a very nice lunch here and they accommodated my gluten-free needs very well. Their online reservation system worked very well except some timings do not reflect the restaurant closure but they called us to inform us and modify our timing.
Andrew P — Google review
It’s just amazing. The boat is owned by the urban community and rented by a restaurant by a mechanism of pu lic services delegation . I didn't had lots of choices but I have appreciated the moment spent there because of the spectacular view

Le Protocole Restaurant Dunkerque

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
L'Edito Dunkirk is a chic dining establishment that offers a diverse menu featuring burgers, steak, fish, as well as Italian and Asian cuisine. Situated in a stylish dining room with scenic views of the harbor, this brasserie serves authentic homemade dishes prepared with fresh ingredients. The generous portion sizes and attentive staff make for an enjoyable dining experience. Highly recommended by the Ibis hotel staff, L'Edito Dunkirk surpasses expectations with its excellent food quality.
Arrived fairly late after 10pm and was lucky they still seated us. The set meal deal here for 29€ is a great deal. The steak and fries was good but the desserts were really good especially the brioche one with ice cream. Service was also friendly and spoke good English. The decor of the restaurant is nice with tv screens covered in painting frames and chandeliers. The location also overlooks the canals which should be nice during the day. Highly recommend if you look for a nice French restaurant for a bit late dinner.
Phil S — Google review
This was our first time in Dunkirk, and Le Protocole stood out as the only restaurant in town without a break in service hours — which was a big plus for us. We ended up visiting twice: once for a late lunch, and later for coffee and dessert. Our first visit was excellent, which is why we returned. The mussels were decent, and the male waiter was very friendly and welcoming. It left a great impression. However, our second visit unfortunately did not match the first. After walking around town, we came back for a coffee and some waffles. A young waitress with red hair in a ponytail saw us but didn’t greet or seat us. Instead, she served a French couple who arrived after us. When she finally acknowledged us, she placed us at a table right next to the kitchen door — a spot that had a strong, unpleasant smell, almost like a toilet. The restaurant was nearly empty, so the choice of table felt intentional and unkind. It’s disappointing to say this, but the experience felt discriminatory. It’s a shame, because our first visit was so positive. The inconsistency in service left us with mixed feelings.
Hyerim P — Google review
This place is AMAZING! From the moment you walk into this restaurant, you feel great! The decor is outstanding. All the staff were so very attentive. The food was perfect! I what was basically fries topped with shredded chicken and melted cheese. It was delicious (you need to be a French fries and cheese fan) the desserts are amazing and very big portions! So x1 dessert for two people is really enough. Our waiter Sébastien was amazing! Very very good at his job. Thank you for making us feel very welcome. We will be back again.

Visited the place after reading the good reviews. Very good ambience, friendly staff, it was a bit pricey but the food is good. We ordered mixed finger food, seafood platter with 3 varieties of fish, grilled octopus platter and 3 drinks. Instead of the seafood platter we received a dorade fish menu ordered by a gentleman sitting on another table beside us. Since we had started eating, we did not complain but at the end we were charged for the seafood platter. Luckily i had taken photos of the food before eating, so we cleared the situation with the waiters and they gave us another bill without any discussions.

Disappointed. Our mussels were overcooked and we had to send them back. No apologies from manager or commercial discount. Butter with extra Televisions goes on with the news ruining the atmosphere.

We visited on 9th July as had a few hours free waiting for ferry back to Dover. Amazing service provided by the staff, seated as quickly and great atmosphere. Would highly recommend if in the area. The views are amazing.

Food was simply horrible. They have such a beautiful location - ok the Design of the place is ostentatious, trying too hard to be upscale, but - this restaurant COULD be top notch. Yet, they really managed to ruin the food and made it a miserable experience, especially when the bill comes. Risotto that came with an overly fried fish was so salty it was inedible and tasted like old fat. No need to talk about consistency. 30 euros. The fries that came with a traditional meat dish were obviously pre-frozen and then sadly died in fat. How is it possible to ruin them so badly? Three stars because the waiters were nice and service not as slow as the other reviews said. And they gave a discount because of the inedible parts of the dishes.

Beautiful setting, tasty food, but the service is very slow due to restaurant being completely full for lunch with only 3 waiters working. Flammekueche and Mules were great

French restaurant
The Comme Vous Voulez restaurant is a great place to enjoy a fresh meal and a delicious glass of wine. The food is homemade, and the service is friendly. This French restaurant is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy some good food and beautiful views of the sea.
A simply wonderful restaurant. The food here was absolutely amazing, There is a set menu with 3 courses for 32 euros. There is 5 or 6 choices per course. Drinks of course are extra. The staff were friendly and efficient. The restaurant was quite full for a weekday so a reservation might be in order. The dessert was most interesting you could order five small portions of each one. Lovely!
Stillapatmike — Google review
The food here was divine. 🎉. My mum booked us in for dinner after having read some good reviews and boy did she choose well. The wine was great, the bread was great and then when the dinner arrived, it struck us silent as we enjoyed all the wonderful flavours. I ordered the Duck Magret and I deeply wished I had a second stomach so I could eat it again. Sadly I am but human and only have one stomach but such is life. We couldn’t fit dessert but if we could have, we would have! Thank you all so much for a fantastic experience. By far my favourite restaurant in Dunkerque.
Laura M — Google review
It has promise and perhaps we were unlucky a few things went wrong. The good - amuse bouche was tasty and a nice touch, like that they accommodate kids with smaller portions and nice location. The bad - My kids mocktails had what looked like green mould in them. Service with drinks was kind of slow. When we asked for mayonnaise for the fries they didn't arrive until they were cold. The ugly - I spent the whole night/morning being poorly with food poisoning. I suspect it was starter as I was the only one to have that and was the only ill person. I called to let them know as they may wish to look into, didn't really feel they took ownership or cared a great deal. Was just told its not us.
Jenny T — Google review
The place is decent enough. Went there mainly because of the ratings that it had recieved and therefore thought that it would be one of the better restaurants along the coastal strip. It would've been nicer if the place had more in-house preparations. The service was also ok. Our tea/coffee came after the dessert. I must say that it was quite packed for a Monday afternoon. The organic red wine, which my friend had, was really nice. Not bad but nothing exceptional either.

I have eaten all around the world. Have been to hundreds of restaurants in my life (Im 46) from Michelin starred restaurants to dives. This was THE worst experience I have ever had at any restaurant and one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever experienced in any industry. The wait staff was unbelievably obnoxious and rude(coming from a former waiter). We ended up not eating here (after waiting 45 minutes for a menu and 50 minutes for water) so I cannot comment on the food. Our table was never inconsiderate or impolite at any point. We were never loud or obnoxious either(no one in our group drank any alcohol). We walked down a few blocks and had a delicious meal at a very warm and welcoming establishment.
Jason P — Google review
If you make a reservation they will place you in the worst part of the restaurant. We were seated in a very dark place near the kitchen. I think the trick is that they place people who reserved a table in advance in the worst corners of the restaurant while they leave the terrace for those who were passing by and decided at the last minute to eat. I notice that those "reserved tables" at the terrace remained empty most ot the time. It completely sour our experience.

Chris G — Google review
The service was excellent and when all the construction is done along the beach, I imagine the atmosphere would be also much better. A good wine and beer selection. The fish that i had was very lacking in flavor, but the rest of my group enjoyed their meals and they looked much better. The menu (appetizer, main and dessert) was priced well.

La Cocotte L'Appart Côté Mer is a charming beachfront restaurant known for its classic regional dishes and down-to-earth ambiance. The menu offers a small but tasty selection, with the popular Cocotte Dunkerquoise dish being highly recommended by locals. The staff is commended for their English-speaking abilities and willingness to explain the food, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Guests appreciate the generous portions of mussels and the variety of artisan beers available.
Super friendly and accommodating staff. We had a great meal
Marta K — Google review
Basic eatery on the beach where you should probably prefer the mussels served in many variants. I had the bad luck to chose a salmon and avocado tartar and a plate of 3 little pieces of local cheese that, like the tartar, had probably spent the previous night under a plastic foil in the refrigerator, judging from the rests of plastic foil on the edges of the plates. It didn't help that I found a tooth filling in the tartar...
Sebastian R — Google review
Food was good, but service was terrible. Lady who served us was so rude, I had a feeling that guests will do dishes in the kitchen. Not recommend. Especially if is special occasion .
Neda K — Google review
Food was decent, not great - pizza was a little soggy, mussels in a bucket were a bit of overcooked. The restaurant was busy, so I was okay with all that. But, the worst/wierdest part was that I needed to order bread (extra) for soaking up the mussel juices, as it didn't come with the dish...
Andrew Z — Google review
Appreciate the effort taken by the staff to speak English and explain the food to us. They were patient and puts us at ease. Doing their best. Food is awesome except beef could be warmer when served. The mussles were generous and goes really well with champagne. Setting is cosy. For menu refer to images to have an idea of what is served and price point.

The food was nice . The service could be improved as they are a bit slow but it was fine overall.
V T — Google review
The food was great (muscles and cod/salmon dishes) and the seating area on the promenade was great in the evening sun and friendly staff. Missing because chair+table design/layout meant they took up space or badly positioned so I had to keep moving for the staff who also knocked me several times. Also had to queue in a busy area for an unnecessarily complicated payment system more like a buffet restaurant.

La Patatière is a fantastic dining experience, especially for families and large groups. The staff is patient and accommodating, providing excellent service on the terrace. The concept of stuffed jacket potatoes with various options, salads, and desserts makes for a curious and delicious meal. Even children have interesting menu choices with smaller potatoes or pasta. The portions are generous, the prices are good, and the atmosphere is excellent.
Delicious food at good prices. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The view is amazing. Loved the vegetarian option.

Cheap and cheerful! Came to €40 for two to have a jacket potato each and 2 drinks each. Very big portion sizes and as nice as can be for a jacket potato

If you like potatoes, then you should eat here. Very nice place, close to the beach, with tasty potatoes with different sides. You have dessert included. The personnel was very friendly and we didn’t wait very long to have our dinner, which it’s important when you go with the children
Andreea M — Google review
Jacket potatoes are not really my favourite food but the children wanted to go to this restaurant because they get a free toy at the end of the meal. The service was excellent. Their menu at EUR 20 (aperitif, main course, dessert, coffee) is particularly good value.
Daren S — Google review
Had a wonderful dinner here out on the beachfront. The potato portions are huge! If you like cheesy baked potatoes you cannot go wrong. Oh! I almost forgot, they include dessert as part of the meal!
Andrew M — Google review
Great place, friendly staff with good English. Didn't realise it was Jacket Potato based, but was fantastic and glad to experience other toppings than the normal beans and cheese. Would definitely go again.
Scott G — Google review
The stay there was okay, I don’t recommend it for vegetarians, the only meal they have without meat is a salad. I took instead the 4 fromage potato (without the ham) and it tasted like nothing. The salad next to it was nice, but not seemed fresh. The aperol spritz just tasted like water. The menu for 19 € is nice= drink, potato, dessert and coffee is included. For France it’s cheap. The staff was nice but they didn’t talk English (except one). All in all not the best experience but still okay.

Who knew potatoes could be this good? Excellent staff and service was fast...even thought they were also serving a tour group of around 40 people. Plenty of seating both inside and outside. Wide variety of toppings and good prices.

Very nice place with tasty food. The restaurant it’s quite big, so you may find a table even without reservation. You have a huge variety of beers if you want to taste different types. There is also a kids menu, but it’s not available during the weekend.

We stopped in Dunkerque for one night for an early train the next day back to the UK and were so happy to have found this place whilst searching Google Maps for somewhere to eat. I love this style of place - big, modern, good atmosphere, amazing beers, and solid food choices. There were families, friends, and couples all enjoying the big space and modern decor. The amber beer was really smooth and very easy to drink, and the beer cocktails were also really good! It's very easy to drink on a warm night. The food was good, the Flammekueche especially was amazing - we had the goats cheese and honey one and it was delicious. Could've eaten 10 😂 Our waitress was lovely and could speak very good English, we only had a French menu, but it wasn't too hard to figure it out with the French we know and Google Translate. If the waitress hadn't spoken English we would have been able to order ok, so it's really nice they can speak English but it's France so it shouldn't be a must-have expectation! I just really like the vibe of the place, and I think if I lived in Dunkerque, I'd be down here all the time! The only improvement is that on the Ceaser salad, in the image on the menu, the sauce was in a dish on the side, but when it came the salad was totally covered in it, and it was really quite thick. The sauce was lovely, you could really taste the anchovy but... it would have been nice to have been able to put it on ourselves in the amount we want not super thick all over. We did inform our very nice waitress of this who was very apologetic!
Hannah J — Google review
We tried this place for a quick bite. It has its own brewery on site. After tasting the blonde and Amber beer I thought the blonde one was best. This place has two entrances from the shopping centre and the street. The food was of a good standard. Particularly good value was the cheesy fries. Service was friendly.

Horrible Place! Food was decent, the place looks nice however the staff is easily the worst we’ve ever experienced. We are not fluent in French and from the beginning they seemed sceptical to serve us. When the communication was hard the waiter rolled her eyes and just left just, we had to wait quite a while until someone else came. They visibly made fun of us and treated us without any respect. This is not how to deal with paying customers nor anyone else! You should really think about how to fix that issue because like that this place is unbearable! I advice anyone to avoid

Not bad for quick stop, but be ready that kitchen is closed at 3pm on Sunday which is not stated in opening hours. But thanks to one saint waiter we were allowed to sit at 14:45, at the same time two others were not sure if we can do it…. Beer was good, burger good enough.

It’s a 3 Brasseurs! Very good food at a reasonable price with friendly service and a good atmosphere. Always a consistent place to eat!

Nice place in the center of the city and facing the marina. Good choice of made beers. Food from the north and also strangely from the east of France. Consider it as a restaurant of food coming from French regions historically producing beer and not wine. Kitchen close after 10:30pm. Better to place orders before 10pm, more choices. Lack of salads, not a place for veggies!

On early Saturday afternoon I had a very delicious lunch here. Of course, on mange toujours bien en France, but it was the service at Le Grand Morien that made the difference. We ate here two times during our stay in Dunkerque. The fact that we came back probably shows that we enjoyed the food there. I had muscles and lobster risotto. Both really tasty, generous portions. Stef D — Google review
There’s a reason places like this survive for decades — reputation. Once upon a time, maybe it was deserved. Maybe the mussels were transcendent, the service sharp, the whole thing worth a slow train ride from Paris. But now? Now it feels like the king has abdicated. You walk in and they’ve got that polished, almost studied sense of “hospitality” — just enough attention to make you believe you’re getting something special. But behind it, there’s a fatigue, the quiet confidence of a place that knows you came here because of the name, not because they earned you tonight. The oysters? Fine. Not bad. But when you’ve had Jerry in Perth behind the shucking knife — not a single shard of shell, no grit, champagne frosty enough to make you shiver — these just feel like they clocked in, did the job, and went home. The steak arrived as two odd, mismatched cuts on a plate, like leftovers from a butcher’s B-side. The fish — a whole sea bass, pan-cooked, flanked by vegetables that seemed like they’d been sentenced to die on that plate. A smear of vegetable purée acting less like a flourish and more like edible glue to keep the garnish from sliding into the abyss. And before all that, there’s the dance — the wait, the two sittings rule, the mild but unmistakable pomposity about where and when you get to sit. You’re in Dunkirk, not Versailles. The bill, like the reputation, is bigger than the experience. High prices, middling returns. And here’s the thing — walk a few doors down and you’ll find better options. Friendlier faces, no games about seating times, no haughty theater. Just good seafood, served by people who seem to actually give a damn. Le Roi de la Moule? Still wearing the crown — but the shine’s long gone.
Pieter G — Google review
Absolutely loved my experience here! The seafood was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the portion sizes were generous. We have been to Roi de la Moule as a family (2 adults, two children now 9) every summer for the last three years, either as we leave or enter France from the UK, and it’s a firm favourite. We always get the ‘mussels in the king’s manner’ because it’s the best! You do need to book because it gets very busy but it’s absolutely worth it. Couldn’t recommend it more highly.

The restaurant is right by the sea, so the view from the terrace is wonderful. The menu is interesting. I found many dishes of traditional French and Flemish cuisine. The grilled cod fillet with black rice was delicious. The Flemish stew with pieces of gingerbread and cinnamon is not my flavour at all. A very interesting combination for me but not to my taste. It's something for Flemish foodies. But the meat was excellent. Everything was aesthetically presented, the service was courteous and friendly and I would recommend it. Merci beaucoup
