Specialty Museums
The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, is a world-renowned paleontology museum known for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils and reconstructions. With over 40 complete dinosaur skeletons on display, visitors can gain a sense of the immense size of these prehistoric creatures.
Extremely popular museum—you can see license plates from all over Japan. If you like dinosaurs, this place is a must-visit. The kids were very excited to explore and learn. There’s plenty of interesting stuff to see. The buildings themselves are also worth seeing. The architecture looks like a spaceship landing on a small hill in the middle of rice fields. The infrastructure is well-prepared to handle large crowds: clean toilets, a brand-new restaurant, and a wide selection of merchandise. There’s plenty of free parking, so driving here is a great option.
Andy H — Google review
Extremely well organized place. Beautiful arhitecture too. Child or adults everyone can enjoy this place. Better if you buy your ticket in advance. A lot of interesting things to see and fun activities to do. The gift shop is amazing too.
Fraga L — Google review
I can't believe it's only $10 to enter! This museum was so much fun and the dinosaurs were so cool! You don't need kids to have fun here. We drove from Fukui and there's a huge parking lot. We bought tickets in advance for timed entry and enjoyed a really good lunch (it was adorable!!)
Siobhan E — Google review
Great museum. Huge area with lots of displays and activities for the kids. The main gallery is an echo chamber which is awesome! Great food in the restaurant and cool playground outside too. Well recommended for kids, families, archaeology enthusiasts and dinosaur buffs! Big carpark, also lots of bus options
Jimmy M — Google review
Great museum. Impressive replicas mix with real fossils. Animaltronix looked nice too. The video works are a bit clumsy though. I really appreciate the faithful English translations on most of their displays. Though there was no translations available for the special exhibition. Also the special exhibition was surprisingly small, I'd suggest skipping it if you can't understand Japanese. The dioramas where the exhibition highlights the changes in the environment through the millions of years with the dinosaurs in them were informative. I went in hoping to gain some new knowledge and I left feeling fulfilled. The gift shop needs to have some imagination regarding the products they offered as I feel they were a bit lackluster.
Johnson ( — Google review
One of the most amazing Museum's I have ever been to. So many different different specimens of dinosaurs on display, even some information in English which makes it easier for tourists to understand. The the museum offers multiple levels and even an exclusive look on how some fossils are prepared. The restaurant offers a good selection of delicious dishes and the souvenir shop a wide variety of different things to buy. Would definitely visit again in the future.
Anthony O — Google review
An outstanding paleontological museum. The trip to the museum takes a long time, but it's worth it. It's best to buy tickets to the museum and the excavation site in advance, as it's very crowded. The bus from the station to the museum costs 300 yen. The museum has a restaurant, playgrounds, a dinosaur park, and a gift shop.
Павел К — Google review
Without a doubt a world best dinosaur museum. Excellent range and depth, great animating techniques and great science detail. Real fossil excavation. Easy access from Fukui shinkansen ration. Tip top.

Katsuyama Castle Museum

Mentioned on
5 lists
Heritage museum
Sights & Landmarks
Katsuyama Castle Museum, located in the mountain town of Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, is a 6-floor castle standing at a height of 57.8m, making it the tallest in Japan. The museum showcases over 700 years of history with numerous cultural and historical artifacts from around the country, including classic swords from the Kamakura period. Visitors can explore countless exhibits featuring important relics and learn about the rich heritage of the area.
Honestly, the admission fee is quite reasonable for what's essentially an observation deck. The interior structure is well-designed, the exterior is meticulously maintained, and the exhibits are clearly curated with care. The staff are also very friendly. I really don't understand why so many people give it 1-star reviews—it's unfair that its rating is even lower than Nagoya Castle, which has structural issues and is under renovation. Hang in there, Katsuyama Castle Museum! Keep up the great work!
Hihisumsum — Google review
This museum was a delight to go to, but as a tourist using transit and mostly walking it is definitely difficult to get to. Beautiful samurai helmets were on display along with precious artifacts. Interior itself was relatively modern, which was unexpected. I still enjoyed my time.
Pirkolette R — Google review
Katsuyama Castle is a historical site located in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. It was originally built in the early 17th century and played a significant role during the Edo period. The castle is known for its strategic location and beautiful stone walls. Unfortunately, the original structures of Katsuyama Castle were dismantled, and today only the ruins remain, including parts of the stone walls and moats. The area around the castle ruins offers a glimpse into the feudal history of Japan and provides scenic views of the surrounding landscape.
Charles D — Google review
Well maintained magnificent castle with 6 storeys. The outside looks grand with sculptures of dragons at the base of castle walls. It is actually a museum with an observation deck at the top. The original castle was not at the same location and was destroyed during war times. However the “castle” itself is really worthy of a visit due to its grand look and good exhibitions of arts and Japanese armours. Recommend for a visit after going to the Dinosaurs Museum.
JK M — Google review
Excellent museum, spanning the entire castle . Level 2 was astonishingly beautiful. It is fair to say that the exhibits are exquisite. Each series of staircases for each floor also have works of art on them. I wish that there were more English guides/posts on level 5 and 4. If it had that, or posts in more languages, I'd give this place a perfect score. Be sure to visit the shrine and gardens that is part of the castle complex. The entry clearly states that mobile data reception is slow/poor. I thought it would not affect me, but in the end I couldn't use my translator app to translate the signs in Japanese.
Kha C — Google review
Assalamualaikum brother, this castle is great place to visit in Katsuyama. The castle is so beautiful and very big, you can also enjoy milk ice cream in front of this castle.
Asrul S — Google review
The castle is very beautiful. It has dragons carved on the outside, which makes it even more beautiful. If you're nearby, it's worth stopping by and seeing it.
Claudia M — Google review
It is a beautiful and dignified Japanese castle surrounded by a mountain basin. It is standing in the middle of the rice paddy, and with the mountains in its background, the entire scenery showcases authentic Japanese beauty. If you’re visiting in this region, you should not miss this place. Relatively easy to reach by car. It is fun to ride around with rental bicycles too. Inside of the castle is a museum which is very clean. The view from the top of the castle again is pretty magnificent. You will feel like becoming a samurai lord.

Echizen Daibutsu

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Monuments & Statues
Echizen Daibutsu is a colossal modern temple complex in Fukui prefecture, Japan. It features a 17-meter-tall seated Buddha, which is even larger than the famous Buddha of Nara. The statue is surrounded by over 1,281 smaller stone and gold statues on three walls, along with two large statues of arhat and bodhisattva on each side. The grand scale of the structure inside and out is truly incredible.
A beautiful temple in Fukui, home to Japan’s largest indoor Buddha statue. The walls are decorated with many intricate statues, creating a peaceful and impressive atmosphere. There’s also a fun photo spot where you can pose as the character “大” and combine it with “仏” for a memorable shot. A really nice place to visit.
NNchan — Google review
Even though this temple is relatively new it is well worth the visit. It is enormous and the steer size of the Buddha and it building is amazing. Visit the pergoda, which has an elevator, and get a fantastic view of the temple and district.
C F — Google review
Love this place. The temple itself is beautiful . The pagoda is higher than the one in Kyoto if I remembered correctly. Inside there’s a stunning space with great acoustics so you hear chanting when people pray, which gave me goosebumps. The walls lined with bottom to ceiling Buddhas on all 3 sides and when you walk around you can see people can to pray and place coins in various ways. I have to admit that I didn’t do much research on the place before I went but we were impressed. Especially, because it was not l crowded which make it so peaceful and nice to walk around. Love it and highly recommend
Monk M — Google review
Came here on a Saturday and noticed nearly all shops were closed. Not sure what the occasion is. Nevertheless, this temple is huge and the huge Buddha statue in the main hall was breathtaking. You can also go up the five-story pagoda and no worries, there's an elevator to the 4th floor. You still need to climb the stairs to reach the top 5th floor.
Horatio T — Google review
The Echizen Daibutsu (越前大仏), or Echizen Great Buddha, is a monumental seated Buddha statue located at Daishizan Seidaiji Temple. Standing at 17 meters tall, it holds the distinction of being the tallest indoor seated Buddha statue in Japan, surpassing even the famous Great Buddha of Nara. The statue was inspired by the seated Buddha at the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, China. Constructed in 1987 by local businessman Kiyoshi Tada as a gesture of gratitude to his hometown, the temple complex spans approximately 22 hectares. In addition to the Great Buddha, the main hall houses 1,281 smaller Buddha statues, creating a profound and serene atmosphere. The temple grounds also feature a five-story pagoda, which at 75 meters is the tallest of its kind in Japan, and a tranquil Japanese-style garden. Admission fee: ¥500 for adults.
Anna K — Google review
If you have made it to this side of Fukui, you need to make time to go to Echizen Daibutsu. While not as historical as the Todaiji in Nara, the fact that its a lot less crowded makes it more enjoyable. The place is very serene, the Buddha impressively huge, and the walls of Buddha makes an aesthetic photo backdrop - it's also very pretty viewed in person. We didn't have the time to go up the pagoda as we are rushing for the Dinosaur Museum closing hours. Worth the entrance fees!
Henry P — Google review
It was such a great experience. We could take pictures inside And it was sooo quiet. Less tourists max 10 people
Ana V — Google review
Amazing. Very beautiful. Constructed not so long ago in 1987. Beautiful pagoda. Huge Buddha statue in the temple hall, and hundreds of smaller. The Buddha statue is 17m tall which is the tallest in Japan, 2 m higher that the one in Nara.

In November 2024, we made a brief stop at this station to catch a bus to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. While waiting for the bus, I considered exploring around the station, but it was quite cold that day, so I decided to stay inside. The staff was kind and helpful, even though our Japanese skills were limited. The bus to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum stops right in front of the station and is easy to identify by the dinosaur images on it. Payment is only by cash. Alternatively, there are taxi waiting outside the station.

Lovely small old fashioned station. Friendly staff and clean. Takes about 1h from Fukui to get here and is the get off point for the Dinosaur Museum. Has a 1920 small train carriage on show.

(Translated by Google) It takes 57 minutes from Fukui Station to Katsuyama Station on the Echizen Railway Katsuyama-Eiheiji Line. The last stop. Almost everyone who gets on the bus up to this point is going to the Dinosaur Museum. The "Echizen Railway One-Day Free Ticket + Unlimited Use of Katsuyama City Buses" (1,700 yen) is definitely a good deal. Not only can you get on the bus to the Dinosaur Museum, but you can also get on the bus to the Echizen Buddha and Katsuyama Castle Museum. You can use your transportation IC card at the ticket gates of the station. There are toilets, vending machines, and coin lockers inside and outside. Next to it is the "Echizen Railway Cafe," where you can drink roasted coffee on the spot or take it out to drink on the train. The old station building has been renovated and has a modern look, giving it a nice feel. If you go left after leaving the station, you will find the bus stop for the Dinosaur Museum. I was worried that everyone who got off would be able to get on the bus, but everyone was able to get on, although they had to stand. The resort offers ski rentals, souvenir shops, and snack stalls, including ice cream for those with a sweet tooth. The facilities, including restrooms, are clean and well-maintained. The resident DJ plays modern hits, adding a fun and lively vibe. Highly recommended for those looking for a ski travel package that includes accommodation and transportation! Check out the Ski Jam Katsuyama's home website!

Today I came here for the first time. I lost my smartphone when I was going up the slope by lift. Luckily, the lift staff helped me to find it out immediately. You don't know how happy I was when I received my phone. They saved my life!!!!! I also took a course for the beginner. Sensei was very nice and gave detailed instructions. If possible, I want to rate 100☆ for the service here! Thank you so much!!!!!! I will come here again♡♡♡

Ski Jam Katsuyama is a great get away for those looking to experience skiing while visiting Japan. It is an easy trip from Osaka or Kyoto and a great addition to any itinerary to add a bit of beautiful mountain scenery, traditional Onsen, and skiing to your trip. I would go back in an instant!

The snow thickness is really good for snowboarding and skiing this year. Great place for beginner. ¥4800 for adult one day ticket. They use card instead paper ticket to enter the lift so it’s really convenient and you can redeem the card for ¥500.
Aiman A — Google review
I don’t usually write reviews, but had to make an exception in this case. First time skier, I went to Ski Jam with my wife and 3 kids who were also beginners. Facilities were excellent, rental shop had everything we needed to get started, and equipment, especially the ski wear was comfortable and pretty new. Check in process for our lesson was timely and smooth. We opted for the private lessons, in English, which I at first thought was a bit expensive but it was worth every penny. Our instructor “Nico” Maekawa was fantastic, took awesome care of our kids, worked so hard to keep us learning and making progress. The whole ski school team was fantastic and made it an unforgettable experience. The only drawback is that there wasn’t much snow this season but for a beginner didn’t seem to matter much. Recommend that you bring your own gloves, goggles and hats. Definitely going back!
Damian — Google review
I would recommend someone lives in kansas region and wanted do a day ski trip. Its about 3 hours from Osaka and its fairly easy access to ski resort. The ski resort self is big enough and can accommodate all skill levels.

This walk-through attraction features an impressive collection of 44 life-size dinosaur models hidden among lush greenery along a scenic 460-meter walking path. Visitors can explore themed zones like the Valley of Attacks and King of the Sky, making it an engaging experience for all ages.
Very well maintained and set up prehistoric museum. Home of the Fukui Raptor. Roughly 10-15 by bus from Katsuyama station, after a 1 hour train ride from Fukui. Staff is helpful and friendly.

Quite a nice hike about a mile long; it would be a nice bonus package if you have kids. There’s a parking lot next to the park if you want to skip the museum, but it wasn’t a bad walk from the museum parking lot. The exhibits here are for the most part robotic. Motion sensors line the trail to trigger the dinosaur animations when visitors get close. It’s a treat for the kids for sure.

We came to visit on a public holiday. I recommend booking your ticket online. 🎟 because this place is so popular and busy. Come early to avoid the long line of traffic trying to enter the carpark. 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 Great facilities and a lot of fun for the kids. Some of the moving dinosaurs 🦕 may be scary for little kids. The restaurant food was good, but it took a long time to get a table. 🍜 Despite all the negatives I mentioned above, we still had a great time. 👍

Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Heisenji Hakusan Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine nestled in a serene forest, offering picturesque trails winding through towering trees and lush patches of moss. Established in 717 CE to honor the sacred Mt. Hakusan, it evolved into a grand religious center housing 8000 monks before being ravaged during the Ikko-Ikki Jodo Shinshu Buddhist uprising.
Very beautiful Sadly most shrines were closed and many needles covered the moss. Nonetheless it was beautiful and peaceful, well worth the way! Please don't be a stupid tourist like me and check warnings beforehand. Apparently there were bearsightings and one was not supposed to take the forest road up
Siemon S — Google review
Heisenji Hakusan Shrine (平泉寺白山神社) is a historically significant Shinto shrine nestled in the forested foothills of Mount Hakusan in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Established in 717 AD by the Buddhist monk Taichō, it originally served as a Buddhist temple and a base for pilgrimages to the sacred Mount Hakusan. Over time, it evolved into a prominent religious center, blending elements of Buddhism, Shintoism, and mountain worship. In the 16th century, the temple complex was destroyed during the Echizen Ikkō-ikki uprising. Later, during the Meiji period's separation of Shinto and Buddhism, it was reestablished as a Shinto shrine, retaining the name "Heisenji" despite the "-ji" suffix typically denoting Buddhist temples. Today, Heisenji Hakusan Shrine is renowned for its serene atmosphere, moss-covered grounds, and towering cedar trees. The approach to the shrine features a stone-paved path enveloped in lush greenery, offering a tranquil experience for visitors. The site is also recognized as a National Historic Site and a Place of Scenic Beauty in Japan.

Absolut hidden Gem for people visiting Japan! This is the most incredible place I have visited during my whole trip! The moss shrine is incredibly beautiful and there are almost no tourists there. Next to the shrine there is a cafe called "Rokusai". They serve Matcha Specialities matching the aesthetics of the place perfectly! It is quite difficult to get here, the busses are unfortunately not well communicated and I had to take a taxi from the train station ~2000 yen). But it is absolutely worth it
Swiper S — Google review
Heisenji Hakusan Shrine is one of the most beautiful, magical hidden gems in Japan, almost unmatched after half a year travelling the country. The endless carpets of moss almost seem to give off light, only broken up by massive, ancient sugi pines. The crickets and songbirds will heighten the sense of peace you will feel in this place, and no matter how long you stay, you will be sad to leave. A little corner of paradise

(Translated by Google) A friend had told me that looking at the materials at Mahoroba before visiting Heisenji Hakusan Shrine would make my visit even more enjoyable, so I dropped by first and took my time looking around. All the staff were very kind, answering my questions carefully and even lending me a bear bell for free. While waiting for the community bus back to Katsuyama Station, I asked to watch some archived videos, and they played the whole thing for me, providing me with every comfort. The archived video on Hakusan worship was very good. After shopping, I was introduced to the newly designed shopper, and I was delighted to see the beautiful deep green design with its striking stonework icon. I was able to spend the long wait for the bus in peace and enjoyment, learning at the same time. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the staff. I was surprised to learn that excavations at the Hakusan Shrine site were surprisingly recent, dating back to the 1980s. I'm interested in stones, geological layers, and excavations, so I look forward to the research moving forward once all the excavations are complete. 福井県立恐竜博物館 レストラン

Soba noodle shop
At the 福井県立恐竜博物館 レストラン, dining becomes an adventure in itself! This unique restaurant offers a delightful twist on typical museum fare, serving up delicious local specialties with a playful dinosaur theme. Imagine savoring a special Fukui sauce katsudon served in a bun shaped like a dinosaur footprint or indulging in parfaits adorned with dinosaur cookies and creatively cut fruit resembling claws.
Surprisingly excellent food. Most museum cafes I have been to overcharge for generic food. Not only was this food delicious, but they served local specialties, and made an effort to create a dinosaur aesthetic with the presentation. The special fukui sauce katsudon- pork burger had a dinosaur footprint bun. The parfaits not only had dinosaur cookies, fresh fruit, but the skins of the fruit had been partially peeled and cut to look like claws! I also ordered the zaru-soba (soba is also a regional delicacy along with the sauce katsudon pork cutlets) and it was very good. On top of that, the prices were so reasonable. The set menu with burger, fries and dino nuggets was about 1,000 yen (with a drink), the soba was around 700 yen, and the parfaits were also about the same. Beating the crowds: It's a lot about the timing, as other reviews have said. We went shortly after the afternoon opening (COVID precautions), when most people were focused on seeing the museum. We did the restaurant first and then museum so it was practically empty. But I have been here when its very crowded as well, and the experience was still good (try to sit on the counter seats facing the window for more privacy).

For foodcourt food this was honestly decent - and fun! My 10year old loved doing the science experiment cake. It was also cool to dine surrounded by fossils.

The concept is dinosaurs, and it's fun to see dinosaur motifs throughout. I had the Carnivorous Tyranno Burger for 1,500 yen, but since these kinds of places are meant to be enjoyed for the atmosphere and concept, I thought the taste and contents were about what you'd expect. However, the burger was a bit too small... I would have liked it to be a little more substantial, even if it meant paying more. You order and pay using a terminal similar to the ticket machines you see often these days, and when your number on the paper that comes out is called, you go and collect your food. The menu is quite unique, in keeping with the dinosaur museum style, and the kids enjoyed their meals, but although the food was delicious, I felt the portions were a little lacking for adults. If you go a little later they also have pancakes and other sweets available, so it's a good place for tea. You reserve a ticket in advance, get a number, wait a few minutes, and then receive a phone or SMS notification to enter the restaurant. It's nice not to have to waste time waiting. However, the wait time on my day exceeded 100 minutes by noon, so it's best to make a reservation early. I was able to sit down immediately after receiving my reservation notification. Ordering is done at one of three ticket machines. Cash and various electronic payment methods are accepted. After placing your order, your number is called and you collect it at the counter. I ordered the Carnivorous Tyranno Burger with a drink set. It's a small cheeseburger, but the meat is juicy and more filling than it looks. It comes with fries and lettuce, which was also delicious. Considering its location inside the museum, the taste is more than satisfactory. I was satisfied with the food. Hachisuke is a genuine Soba establishment offering a limited menu of hot or cold noodles topped with options like raw egg and mashed potatoes. They prominently display a warning sign indicating their exclusive focus on Soba and lack of amenities for children, which holds true. The noodles are delectable, as is the tea, albeit somewhat plain.
Yamakake soba was delicious! Oroshi soba is also great, more balanced and sweeter (in a good way) than Nomuraya.

The Oroshi Soba was mild and a little sweet; during the winter/colder season, the shop uses the sweeter part of the Japanese daikon, while the spicier part is used during the summer/warmer season. As of this time, only take-out available. There is some outdoor seating nearby, or you can eat in your car.

(Translated by Google) Fukui prefecture is famous for soba, but this is a recommended restaurant for soba in Katsuyama. I came here because they serve delicious handmade soba made from Katsuyama-grown buckwheat milled in-house, as they are run by a flour mill that has been in operation since the postwar period. Everyone eats together in the living room of an old house, and sharing a table is the norm. I was lucky enough to be able to sit right away, but they don't seat you until everyone is there. They seem to use Nakao Akira and his wife for advertising. They don't have a menu for large servings, so it seems common to order two. I'm worried about not being able to add more later, so I order two. Yamakake soba 820 yen Oroshi soba 580 yen I ordered these two items. I was wondering why Zaru soba was 820 yen, but it seems that the amount of soba is 1.5 times that. It's basically like bukkake soba, and the soup is a little sweet. The soba noodles were flat, so you could really taste the flavor and they were definitely delicious. I thought the grated daikon radish noodles would be spicy, but it turned out to be a sweeter radish, which put me off at first. Apparently it becomes spicier in summer. I definitely finished two bowls in one go. Since I was eating while being watched by the people in line, I continued to eat my chopsticks while overcoming the pressure to eat quickly. The soba noodles were very flavorful and delicious. Thank you for the meal! Grill Yamada is a quaint eatery nestled in the mountains, famed for its delectable katsudon and flavorful sauce. Well-liked by the community, this restaurant has limited seating options. The timing of our visit coincided with the store opening at noon, eliminating any wait time. Customers formed a queue around midday, but precautions were taken to ensure social distancing due to COVID-19 restrictions. The katsudon set we ordered was generously sized and thoroughly enjoyed.
We went on weekday so no issue getting table but soon fill up. Really good Katsu and sauce. I got the four piece Katsu which was way too much for me and gave one to my son. My son got the mix plate Katsu, beef and shrimp. He gave me a bite of beef which was awesome!

It's very simple, thoroughly covered in a sweet and spicy sauce, but the taste is addictive. It even feels somehow nostalgic. It seems to be a popular restaurant among locals, and is a kind of soul food of Katsuyama that is always bustling with customers. The katsudon lineup comes with one small serving, two regular servings, and three large servings. Of course, there are also other options such as shrimp bowls and yakiniku bowls, but if it's your first time, the katsudon is the only choice. If you're in the area, I recommend you try it at least once. Thank you for the meal! Katsudon also has the image of a speedy meal, but since it is carefully made, the turnover rate is not that good. The pork cutlet has a thin, crispy coating and is topped with a light sauce. The crispy meat is juicy and delicious, and the rice goes on and on. The additional beef cutlet is also very tasty. Although the wait time was quite long, the sauce katsudon was worth eating. If you were driving by car, the parking lot was full and you had to park on the street, but the road was narrow and caused collisions with other cars. We strongly recommend using other means of transportation rather than driving. I had heard there would be a line, so I arrived 30 minutes early, but the parking lot was large, so I was able to wait comfortably until opening. I ordered a large-sized pork cutlet bowl set for a total of 2,145 yen. First of all, the volume is impressive. The pork cutlets are piled up and towering, so I tried cutting them into three pieces. The texture of the pork cutlet is soft, the batter is crispy, and the sauce is delicious. Personally, it's the best sauce pork cutlet bowl I've had in Fukui. The service was also good. Even though it was a weekday, I had to wait in line. The waitress came all the way to the parking lot to pick me up, which I felt bad for. 💦 The cutlet was delicious, and the lean meat wasn't oily at all, so I could eat as much as I wanted! If you order it as a rice bowl, the sauce is poured over the rice, making it a bit more flavorful. Another difference is that the rice bowl set comes with a lettuce salad, while the set meal comes with shredded cabbage. It's also child-friendly, and they offer a children's lunch set. Soba noodle shop
Katsushoku is a traditional soba noodle shop that serves Echizen-style soba in a charming setting with both counter and chabudai table seating. Customers can enjoy delicious cutlets, with a mini bowl set being sufficient for women. The menu offers various flavors such as sauce, soy sauce, and egg, but the soy sauce option comes highly recommended. The cutlet itself is delightful, featuring a thin and light batter that complements the juicy pork.

The restaurant offers both Fukui-style katsudon and soba, which are local specialties. The taste is very good, especially the katsudon with its flavorful sauce. The oyakodon is also delicious, with a mild and sweet egg flavor. The atmosphere is calm and pleasant, and the staff provide great service. The menu is only in Japanese and has no photos, so it’s helpful to check photos from Google Map reviews beforehand to decide what to order. There are a few parking lots in front of the store.

This shop specializes in Japanese soba noodles. The noodles here are handmade and taste amazing. It's quite popular, so if you're planning to eat here, especially during the holiday season when many people are visiting the nearby dinosaur museum, then it's best if you get here as soon as it opens. If you come later, the wait can be quite long.

Arriving a little after 11:00 AM, the parking lot in front of the restaurant was already full! I parked in the lot behind the restaurant and entered, only to find the restaurant already bustling with customers. I was shown to either the counter or a two-person table, and sat at the counter. Order: Tempura oroshi (grated radish), Nikatsudon (pork cutlet bowl) (soy sauce), charcoal-grilled chicken skirt steak, sticky grated radish, mini oyakodon (chicken and egg bowl), large bottle of beer. Eating: First up was the charcoal-grilled chicken skirt steak! The crunchy meat was coated in a sweet sauce, making it a perfect accompaniment to the beer... (I wish they had highballs too!) The mini soy-sauce-flavored katsudon was delicious, and the soba noodles were typical Echizen soba noodles from Fukui, and were delicious. The shrimp tempura was also generous. The oyakodon (chicken and egg bowl) was also well-received! The overall flavor was on the sweet side. Payment was accepted in addition to cash, and PayPay was also accepted! At 1:30 PM, I visited Tokube, a restaurant in Fukui Prefecture known for its famous "Echizen soba." As it was past noon, there were no other customers present. I decided to order the set menu which included a delightful seafood bowl and soba combination. Unlike the traditional "oroshi soba," this dish had grated radish and dashi soup served in a separate bowl. The seafood bowl impressed me with its refined flavors.

Nomuraya is a katsudon restaurant that offers delicious Chinese noodles, known as ramen, for the affordable price of 620 yen. Their noodles are soft and water-rich, creating an orthodox and satisfying dish. The char siu topping adds a unique touch to the flavorsome meal. It has a nice homey atmosphere. The food is great of course.

Really strong bite in the soba noodles, which I liked, but the daikon was a bit too spicy/bitter without much else to it (i.e. I think they just use it pure without treating it with any other flavors to balance it). Their signature egg katsudon was memorable and tasty. The layer of nori under the katsu was a nice and unexpected touch.

(Translated by Google) I was looking for a soba restaurant that was open on my way back (in the evening) from visiting Okuetsu in the latter half of Golden Week, and I found it for the first time. As I walked down a narrow alley from the main street, I suddenly noticed a store with a long line. There are two parking lots for compact cars or light vehicles in front of the store, and two larger parking lots at the end of the three-way intersection in front of the store. There is a waiting list form at the entrance of the store, so fill it out and wait for about 30 minutes. After entering the store, the food came out about 15 minutes after ordering. I ordered sauce katsudon, grated soba (medium), and the famous fluffy tamakatsudon. The sauce on the sauce cutlet bowl was just the way I like it and it was very delicious. The fluffy Tamakatsudon was delicious, but I was impressed! ! I guess it wasn't that bad. I was a little disappointed because the soup stock for the grated soba felt quite thin. The soba itself was thin and delicious, and I could sense that the restaurant wanted you to enjoy the taste of soba. There are very few soba restaurants that are open at night, so it's a valuable option, but it would be nice to know how long the wait time is. If you have a large car in the parking lot, be careful as you are likely to hit a telephone pole when turning. Although it was delicious, there were a lot of disappointing points, so overall I give it a 3 star. Grabbed a meal at this eatery as a last resort - the menu at the museum restaurant didn't look appealing, there was a long wait till the next bus after exiting the museum, and I was hungry. Ordered the "Pteranodon Plate". It was expensive considering salad veggies and processed food made up half of the plate, with rice and two small pieces of meat on the other half. Taste-wise, the food was barely passable. There was ample space in the restaurant, but seating felt a little squeezy after pulling out the chairs at the tables. And of course to top off the ambience, toddlers and babies were screeching frequently. Definitely a last resort to eat here.

(Translated by Google) Around 2:30 PM on a weekday Tuesday during the summer holidays, the wait time at the restaurant inside the Fukui Dinosaur Museum was about 40 minutes, so we decided to try this restaurant instead, thinking it would be faster. It was full even in the afternoon, but we were able to find an empty seat without having to wait. About 30 minutes after we sat down, seats started to open up. I ordered the Sauce Katsudon Plate and Drink Set for 1,300 yen. The sample photo on the menu made the meat look a little thick, but it was actually quite thin. The sauce had a sweet flavor and was delicious. The meat was thin, but since it was deep-fried and had a rich flavor, it was surprisingly filling. My child ordered the Kids Titan Curry and Drink Set for 1,260 yen. He was delighted with the dinosaur presentation. There was a lot of curry sauce compared to the rice, so he said he was full after eating the rest. Compared to restaurants that focus on food, it may not be as good for the price, but I guess that's what you'd expect from a restaurant in a museum or leisure facility. I thought the presentation and cleanliness of the restaurant were not bad. It was also quick from when I ordered to when the food was served. I've never been to the restaurant at the Dinosaur Museum so I can't compare the seasoning, but if you want to eat quickly, this is the place to go (if there are seats available). By the way, some of the lunch boxes and à la carte items were sold out. The parking lot is shared. It was very crowded on Sunday afternoon, but the rotation was fast so I was able to find a seat after a short wait. The toilets are also clean and spacious. We also sell various souvenirs. The menu names are interesting. I ordered "Jura MOCO Plate" and "Chicken Keratope Nest" w. If you buy a meal ticket from the machine, your order will be processed and once your food is ready, your meal ticket number will be called. For set drinks, you will be given a paper cup and you can pour it yourself. It was a hot day even in November, and the shaved ice was selling well. It's delivered very quickly, so it's okay even if you have a hungry monster. The taste is usually delicious. There is ``DINO KAFE'' inside the museum, but it's easier to get into because it's less crowded than that, and you can re-enter the museum with a same-day ticket, so you can leave, eat here, and then re-enter. Soba noodle shop
If you go to Soba noodle shop Kifune during the daytime, there may be a queue outside, possibly due to Golden Week or a usual Saturday. There is parking available in front of the establishment. The restaurant has a tranquil ambiance with ample seating. One can order a soy sauce cutlet set meal, which consists of soba noodles. The amount of soba served is just right alongside the cutlet and set meal.
Since the day I moved to Japan, I've been visiting this place every month. Not only because of the soba noodles but beacuse of the home like ambience. They also sell homegrown fresh vegetables at the rate of 100yen. My absolute hangout place 💓 I'm in love with the NikuSoba. 😊

There is plenty of parking available in front of the store. The restaurant has a calm atmosphere and has a reasonable number of seats. What I ordered (pictured) is the soy sauce katsudon set (soba). The amount of soba noodles was a little small, perhaps because it was a set, but it was just the right amount when paired with the cutlet. I've heard of sauce katsudon, but I was wondering what it would be like with soy sauce, but instead of the strong taste of the sauce, the soy sauce was subdued, giving it an ``elegant'' and refreshing taste. It was. We recommend that you remove the soy sauce from the cutlet and pour it directly onto the rice. I think both the soba and cutlet taste quite good. (Translated by Google) A visitor from Tokyo had never tried SK (Soy Sauce Katsudon), so he searched for a nearby restaurant on Google Maps. Fortunately, I found a store nearby, and since I was curious about it every time I passed by, I decided to go for it. The exterior has a warehouse-like design that wouldn't be strange to see in a historical drama. I think the inside of the store is seasonal, but the wood stove is burning and the atmosphere is warm and warm. Check out the menu while sitting on the tatami-floored seats! I immediately found a set of soy sauce katsudon. The noodles in the set can be ordered hot or cold, with either soba or udon. This time, I decided to order the “oroshi soba” set! After ordering, I didn't have to wait long for the set to arrive. Add a small amount of soy sauce to the grated radish on top of the cutlet and enjoy! The soup stock for the grated soba was a little sweet. It was a soba with chewy noodles and grated radish, typical of Echizen soba. The soy sauce katsudon cutlet had a nice crispy coating and soft meat. The cabbage placed between the rice is also a no-no in sauce katsudon, but it was delicious in soy sauce katsudon. Best of all, I was able to adjust the flavor intensity to my liking using soy sauce. This set is reasonably priced at 1000 yen (tax included). My companion also commented, ``This was my first time having soy sauce katsudon, and it was delicious.''

Regional airport
Komatsu Airport is a small local airport with a great viewing area to watch airplanes, including those from the nearby Komatsu Air Force base. The airport has a single passenger terminal building serving domestic and international flights. There are big shops on the first floor and smaller ones on the ground floor, but be cautious as some items may be overpriced. The information service is helpful and accommodating, even assisting with providing space for Ashar prayer for Muslim travelers.
I used Komatsu Airport today. It’s really disappointing that ANA flights will be reduced in the future. The airport opens at 6:25 a.m., and there are lounges for both ANA and JAL.

Compact rural airport. The access is very bad. 1 hour to Fukui and Ishikawa. 12 mins to Komatsu station. The bus never waits for passengers at the bus stops even knowing that the airplane is landed. They always let passengers wait for 5-10 mins till the bus comes to the bus stops. Why cant they wait before passengers come out of the exit??? Cannot understand their operation at all. Plenty of shoos but limited and bad range of cafe/restaurants.

Small but serves both national and international flights! The checking in line are long due to the limited service window for checking in flights and the security checkpoint for international flights is also very, very slow due to then only have one line and one X-ray machine to serve international passengers! The second floor duty free shop is pretty nice, lots choice for and the price is pretty fair!

Very convenient Airport with limited facilities behind the security checkpoints. The visitors deck on the top level is great for airplane spotting. The airplane shop is fantastic.

Very small airport with only two gates, yet incredibly chaotic. I’ve been flying as a Senator for over four years and have seen many airports, but I’ve never experienced anything like this. The staff seemed completely untrained – I almost missed my flight because they didn’t know how to process a simple payment for 5kg of excess baggage. I was the first at the airport and the last to reach the gate. Hardly anyone spoke even basic English. Definitely not what you'd expect from an airport. If possible, it’s better to just take the Shinkansen to Tokyo or Osaka instead.

Komatsu Airport has limited security check spots, and waiting times skyrocket during the day. However the observation deck is wonderful, giving any aviation lover the time to admire the planes and sky. Komatsu is rather a small international airport, and has a really bad placement from Fukui, or even Komatsu Station. Thank you Komatsu Airport for a wonderful time.

Visited with my son for just to watch aeroplanes. This is a small local airport but rather many airplanes can be watched. Also there is the Komatsu Air Force base located right next to the airport. We didn't see any fighter flying this time, but with a bit of luck you might. Car parking lot is available, free to park for one hour.

Sights & Landmarks
Toyama Airport is a small but well-equipped airport with friendly and helpful staff. It offers a cozy atmosphere, spacious and clean facilities, as well as a variety of amenities including souvenir shops, restaurants, and ATM machines. The airport also provides free parking and overlooks stunning alpine peaks. Despite being accessible mainly by local bus from Toyama station, it offers a pleasant transit experience with no tourist crowds.
A small airport but has all the necessary facilities. Pretty cozy place. The airport staff are friendly and helpful. There is a gift shop inside if you have some time to spare while waiting. The view from the airport is amazing, overlooking the alpine peaks from far. Overall a great airport to transit from.

It's a very small local airport but it had everything needed for an airport. The toilets are Japanese standard clean, and there's even a sushi shop that is decent. Take note that the airport limousine bus is not like the ones from Narita or Haneda - they are just regular buses, so don't expect dedicated luggage storage under the bus carriage.

I had an incredible experience at Toyama Airport on 30/9/2025. After arriving by bus from Toyama Station, I realized I had lost my wallet before even checking in. I was quite stressed. The staff at the airport immediately approached me and asked if something was wrong. When I explained my situation, they quickly verified the bus details and contacted the bus station staff without hesitation. They found my wallet still on the bus. I was worried I might not get it back before my flight, but the staff reassured me with a warm smile and told me not to worry as they ensured I received it before boarding. Fortunately, I got my wallet back before my flight from Toyama to Haneda, Tokyo. I like to thank the staff at Toyama Airport and Toyama Station for their professionalism, kindness, and efficiency. They went above and beyond in assisting me, and I truly appreciate their help. I highly recommend Toyama Airport for its outstanding service and caring staff. Thank you again to everyone who helped me that day!

Nagoya Airport (Komaki Airport)

Domestic airport
Airport
Nagoya Airport, a small and modern airport, offers a convenient and efficient travel experience. The Flight of Dreams attraction at the domestic terminal features an amusement park with a Boeing 787 plane as its main highlight. Visitors can even try their hand at flying a Boeing 787 or Boeing 747 Dreamlifter on a flight simulator. The airport provides easy access to airplanes without long lines or extensive walking distances. It houses various amenities including convenience stores, cafes, gift shops, and restaurants.
We arrived in Nagoya last March 15, 2023. Passing thru the immigration arrival area was really fast, especially since we already did the online process. The baggage claim area was not packed with people as compared to Kansai Airport when we were there last January 2023. Passing thru customs was very organized and fast as well. The whole airport wasn't that packed with tourists as compared to Kansai. It was very clean also.

Small airport, quiet even but efficient n smooth operations typical of all things Japanese. Here to explore Central Japan with my family. I could not speak Japanese n they frequently struggled with my English but somehow my message got across. Signage were clear in dual language. As far as I could see, they demonstrate helpfulness, sincerity n a hard working attitude when performing mundane tasks. Well done.

Cute small modern airport. Fastest entry and then exit of a country I’ve ever experienced. Even the check-in and bag drop barely took 5 minutes. Very efficient. I thought the ninja puppets hanging from the ceiling were a nice touch. I wish some more of the stores were open in the departure hall. And I wish I could have found one last bottle of sparkling water in any(!) of the many vending machines. But the duty free shop did allow me to taste some Japanese single malt whiskies. (Very nice, but at 14,000 Yen per above my price range.) Main disappointment: the business class lounge was really not that good & there is not a single bottle of Choya for sale anywhere. I wish I had gotten some in town; but I thought I could save the hassle of packing and just do duty free carry-on.
