Naitai Highland Farm

Sights & Landmarks
Naitai Highland Farm offers a peaceful outdoor experience with stunning views of grassy hills and scattered rocks. It's an ideal place to unwind and soak in the natural beauty away from the city's hustle and bustle. Visitors can enjoy a nice meal at a nearby restaurant or grab a snack. The area is also known for its picturesque road, perfect for motorcycle tours with its scenic curves. Additionally, there's a charming cafe lodge where visitors can relax while enjoying coffee or ice cream.
I think this is one of the best scenery in Hokkaido, initially I was hesistant to drive here as is quite a distant from Furano or Obihiro. Very picturesque shade of green grassland along the drive, seeing cows free roaming, weather is cool for hot summer, the cafe at the end of journey is very comfortable to just have the delicious dark chocolate soft served cone and watch the grassland.

This is far from most other places. But trust me, MAKE THIS DRIVE HERE. This place is beautiful. The view is beautiful. The air is fresh, the setting is perfectly made. It's not a highland farm per se so it's a bit of poor labelling. It's a place to see an amazing view of Hokkaido. There's ample parking. Ice cream, small restaurant with some mains like burgers / sandwiches here. Mainly beautiful views Man, Japan is something else....
Oliver L — Google review
Beautiful view and the food is a must try! The hamburger was great and the Dark chocolate-vanilla mix ice cream was divine!
Topazm_ — Google review
Beautiful views in a relaxing and serene setting. We had their ice cream, burger, and milk. All of which we enjoyed. Highly recommend stoping over here if it is on the way for you( and even if it is not).
Ryan L — Google review
Wow. If you are looking for a peaceful outdoor experience unmarred by the hustle and bustle of civilization and breath taking views, This is the place. Grassy hills and random rocks litter the area and is a nice way to stretch the legs and take in the scenery. If you are hungry, or craving a small snack, a restaurant sells lunch items near by. Food is great anywhere you go when in japan so i wouldn't fret on what to get. It's all good. I recommend getting the chocolate and vanilla mixed soft serve and potato fries.
Kenji S — Google review
Huge farm land. Great view from terrace. A pity that the constant loud announcements of the numbers when food is ready really disturbs the peace of the place. I found it annoying. Good hamburger and ice cream
Maria C — Google review
Wasn't able to see anything due to the fog. Should be quite nice when there is no fog.

Lake Shikaribetsu is a beautiful high altitude natural lake. It’s protected so there is no development except for the onsen and a campground. The lake water is clear and the mountains rise up in all directions.

I don't imagine to go there by my Honda Fit, not 4WD, just FF. If weather is fine, you can access here easily by car. I went there in the begining of February. It is mid-winter in Hkkaido. Lake Shikaribetsu has a snow and ice festival in this time. You can stay in the ice hotel and enjoy ice bar on the lake. Also they have a hot spa on the lake. Tkis is the really special hot spa you can enjoy only in this period. That's a terrific experience you'll ever have.

Old Horoka Station

Historical landmark
Old Horoka Station is a charming spot with a historical ambiance. Although most of the Shihoro Line tracks have been removed, the area retains its tracks and points near the station's ruins. Visitors can even operate the points and stand on the platform. The site offers nearby parking and clean restroom facilities, making it convenient for visitors to explore this unassuming yet lovely attraction.

There was no one else there, so I was able to stroll around leisurely in an atmosphere where time seemed to stand still. The platform and station sign. It is a simple station with just the tracks and a switch, but that is what makes it so wonderful. I hope it will remain forever. If you visit Shihoro Town, I highly recommend this abandoned line, as well as Taushubetsu. However, it is cold in the morning, even in summer, so short sleeves are not suitable. Also, it was well-maintained when I visited twice, and I hope that this abandoned line will still be there in 10 or 20 years. Nestled in the picturesque Kamishihoro Town of Hokkaido, Lake Nukabira is a stunning artificial lake that boasts an enchanting old arched train bridge. This scenic spot was created by the construction of a hydropower dam and has become a popular destination for visitors seeking both relaxation and adventure. The area features an onsen resort, perfect for unwinding after exploring the natural beauty surrounding the lake.
A such gorgeous place!! Very worth visiting. Unfortunately, didn't find the bubble this time, but I will be back again to find the bubble under the ice next time!!
楊孟穎 — Google review
We could only view it from a distance - there was no actual route to get down to the lake. Seems like we were the only ones there as well and it would not have felt safe to get down to lake during middle of March with no clear directions/pathway. Others who arrived shortly after left within minutes as well. Quite a long drive to get here too - not sure what to see and the cellphone signal is bad too. There was a cafe nearby in the town where we could view the lake but ultimately it was inaccessible to get down & cafe is only open during summer times.

(Translated by Google) During the coldest months, the area freezes completely, making it a popular place for activities such as fishing for smelt and visiting the Taushubetsu River Bridge. Of course, you can also see ice bubbles inside the ice. For the 2023-2024 season, the lake has been declared safe from freezing on January 2, 2024, so many people have been visiting since that day, as if they were waiting for that. To access the lake during the coldest months, park your car on the roadside near the Gonosawa bus stop and follow the beast road near the stream where the Shihoro Line Gonosawa Bridge ruins are located to reach the lake. Depending on the snow conditions, I got the impression that it was possible to walk on the lake surface even without snowshoes or snowshoes. However, it is a bit slippery, so it might be a good idea to use some simple crampons. The surface of the lake is windswept and -10 degrees Celsius is warm during the coldest months? It can get cold at a very low level, so you need to be careful and careful about how to protect yourself from the cold. Snow mountain equipment is required. Also, if it's sunny, I'll get snowy eyes if I don't wear eyewear. Also, if you want to watch Ice Bubble during the snowy season, you'll need something like a deck brush! The lake was covered with snow almost completely, and there was only a small amount of ice where you could see ice bubbles. Looking at the Taushubetsu River Bridge for the first time in 15 years, It was much more broken down than before. As we traversed the snowy surface of the lake, there were several times when we heard a tremendous rumbling sound, and at times it felt as if the ice beneath our feet was being lifted up by a swell, which was quite frightening. I think in about 10 years, it will look like it has been cut off in several places. The weather was nice, the blue sky was the most beautiful against the white scenery, and the snow on the lake sparkled in the morning sun like diamond sand. The snow on the lake was shaped like a white desert and was beautiful. Bridge
Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Hokkaido, the Taushubetsu River Bridge is an atmospheric relic that captivates visitors with its unique charm. This disused concrete rail bridge becomes partially submerged during winter, only to reemerge each summer as a striking sight against the backdrop of Lake Shikaribetsu.
When I go there in the end of January, it is nice weather so that I could go by my Honda fit which is not 4WD but no problem at all, very lucky day I guess. All the lake's serface was iced so I could walk on it. 30-40min to Taushubetsu bridge by walk, which is a mysterious object on the lake. In the winter, because of lake's short water, the bridge seams to be emarged on the lake only in the winter.

Lake Kunabira is incredibly beautiful, but what's even more special is its captivating bridge, practically submerged in the summer and only visible in the winter. From the signposted viewpoint on the main road, walk about 200 meters through the primeval forest to reach the lake. The entire forest is filled with the breath of nature, and gazing at the mysterious bridge from the lakeside is so enchanting that we wouldn't have left if the repeated roars of bears hadn't drawn us to the road.
WL L — Google review
Beautiful scenery around an old railroad bridge. With the construction of the Nukabira Dam, the bridge became submerged for part of every year. It's now falling apart, and part of the bridge is likely to fall down in the next few years.

This was an impromptu visit, and I was truly captivated by the exquisite blend of colors on the Phantom Bridge, which appeared as if it were a live painting. It's a must-see, as it seems to be delicately poised, and who knows when it might eventually collapse and give way.

Misleading photos. The view is through a forest at a far distance from the bridge. It will be nice if someone described the place so others might not be misled to travel such a distance to great disappointment. There isn't any network at this area so please download your offline maps.

There are space along the road to safely park the car. The trail is about 180m. The bridge looks small from the observation deck. We are the only one there at 5pm.

No proper parking, just a roadside stop. Take a short hike to a clearing and see the old bridge. Underwhelming in my opinion because it's quite far off, and view is narrow. No information on English.

A well maintained rail museum documenting the history of railway services in the area. The interior is small but filled with information. Entrance is 100yen. What's disappointing however is probably there's only one rail car left outdoors. The disused track though is pretty long and one can actually take a walk around the premise too.

(Translated by Google) It is "the trace of the old railway / Shihoro line (used at that time) ..." over the Otofuke River in Kamishihoro-cho, Kato-gun, on the north side of Obihiro city. In this area (along Route 273), there are several bridge traces of abandoned railroad tracks, and although it is small, there is a space where you can stop your car and you can see the bridge. It is close to National Route 273 and can be seen from the car window, but there is also a promenade leading from the nearby snow removal station. Sights & Landmarks
Memanbetsu Airport is a small but convenient domestic airport in Hokkaido. Despite its size, it offers various amenities such as souvenir shops, restaurants, and an observation deck. The airport is known for its cleanliness and helpful staff. It also provides direct bus services to attractions like Abashiri Lake and the Drift Ice Festival site, making it a convenient choice for travelers heading to these destinations.
The airport is small, but it is an important gateway to various beautiful spots in notrh-east Hokkaido.
Yang T — Google review
Although seemingly a small airport, it offers convenience with a 7-Eleven in the arrivals lobby and several shops and restaurants in the departures area. Parking is free for up to 60 minutes, making it a convenient choice for short visits.
T. G — Google review
For a "small" airport, I was impressed by its facilities and amenities, and also the Japan Airlines counter service and Airport security clearance staff who were very helpful and friendly towards me as a foreign tourist. As regards the amenities at this Airport, there's a large 7-Eleven on the ground or arrival floor, and on the upper or departure floor, there were several souvenir shops selling last minute Hokkaido souvenirs and bentos, as well as a standing Sushi eatery and a Soup Curry shop. And in the departure lounge itself there's a Japan Airlines "convenience store."
Edtayjb — Google review
If you just check on Google maps how to get from the airport to Abashiri, Google make you wait in the airport one and a half hour for the next connection, however the airport buses are coordinating with the airlines and if your flight would be delayed the bus will be waiting for you which was extremely helpful!! Thank goodness we did not rely on Google and instead walked out of the airport and the bus was there waiting for our delayed flight and especially in Winter the buses are your best bet because the train station is some 30 minutes on foot and if it's full of snow and snowing in extremely cold weather it's nothing more horrible then to drag your suitcase over snow. A big kudos to the airport for having this planned out. On the way back, the bus that matches your return flight will bring you to the airport almost 2 hours before flight which might feel like a waste of time however there is a very nice restaurant where you can finally be together infamous Hokkaido soup curry that we could not find anywhere in Abashiri town. The luggage check takes longer time because they only have one lane open to scan your cabin stuff and despite the airport being small it might take more than 15-20 minutes to finally get in front of the gates however the gates are not so far, just behind the TSA.
ADEYTO A — Google review
Lovely tiny but clean airport , the soup curry store at the departure hall must try.
Match C — Google review
Nice and clean airport in hokkaido japan. You can easily jump in to shuttle bus right after you get out of the arrival hall

A nice small airport. There are restaurant and shops in 2nd floor, and nice view in 3rd floor.
Alex Y — Google review
A small domestic airport. Very convenient for those who want to go to Abashiri lake or Abashiri drift ice festival. A direct bus service from airport to drift ice festival site. In the 2nd floor of the airport building there are some souvenir shops. There is an observation desk.

Tokachi-Obihiro Airport

Airport
Regional airport
Tokachi-Obihiro Airport is a small and simple airport located about 30 minutes by car or 40 minutes by bus from Obihiro Station. It offers shuttle buses, local buses, and taxis connecting to the downtown area and the JR train station. The airport features decorations showcasing local gems and has scheduled bus services to the city center aligned with flight arrivals. While it may not offer an extensive dining selection, it provides all basic facilities for travelers.
A tiny local airport tear everything is within reach. Decorations featuring local gems can be found all over the airport the moment you stepped in the baggage area. Bus to the city centre are scheduled according to the arrival of the flights, which makes the experience more seamless.

Obihiro airport is a small and simple airport but have all basic facilities. not a busy airport.
Shafiems M — Google review
Not a busy airport for sure, but everything works well. Not so many choices for food but at the end you are not gonna spend much time at the airport. Outside of the city we rented a car at “Nippon car” that base a shuttle bus.
Pier W — Google review
Very good location, with shuttle bus, local bus and taxi connecting with Obihiro JR train station and the downtown Obihiro. A few mins transportation to kofuku Eki park which is a park with two old train compartments in orange colored. It is good for couples. With connecting fight to TOKYO Haneda and Nagoya.

Asahikawa Airport

Airport
Sights & Landmarks
Asahikawa Airport is a small and well-organized airport with efficient transportation options. It's easily accessible from Asahikawa Station, making it convenient for travelers. The airport offers a great selection of reasonably priced food and souvenir shops, as well as an enjoyable observation deck to watch planes take off against the snowy backdrop. Despite its size, the airport is well-equipped and modern, providing a pleasant travel experience for visitors.
V impressed with this airport. My expectations were low for a small airport in a small town in Hokkaido! Pleasantly surprised by the modern amenities and wide array of food (ramen, kaisen don, curry, teppan)
Ming C — Google review
This airport was the perfect size with just enough amenities to meet a couple hours while waiting for a flight. It's very close to the rental cars, especially Toyota car rentals. They have a blend of gift stores with local delicacies, various trinkets, and travel bags including tax free service if you are a foreigner. The dining options available are actually very good from local ramen to a milk stand with delicious soft serve. But I wanted to write this review because of the information desk and the service they provided after losing a phone on the car rental shuttle bus. We had just under an hour before departure, when we realized we lost our phone. We knew where we lost it, and quickly tried to call Toyota rental, but my Japanese is not advanced enough to communicate with the rental agent. I went down to the rental car area on the 1st floor and the rental desk was closed (as expected, since they only staff it when someone is expected to pickup a rental car on arrival), however the information staff understood what happened and quickly called Toyota for me and explained. After a few minutes, they said everything is okay, and the Toyota rental car agent brought my phone to the information desk!! The relief was indescribable. Thank you to the Asahikawa information booth staff for helping resolve this situation and to the Toyota rental car staff who helped to find and bring the phone back. 🙏🙏🙏

Asahikawa Airport is an excellent choice for travelers seeking convenience and efficiency. We flew in from Tokyo, and the experience was smooth from start to finish. The airport is not crowded, making it easy to navigate and stress-free compared to larger hubs. Facilities are well-maintained, with clean toilets that are a big plus for families or long-haul travelers. There’s also a food court offering a variety of meals and snacks, perfect for grabbing a quick bite before or after a flight. The souvenir shop has a good selection of local products, making it easy to pick up gifts or mementos of your trip.

Small airport but there eatery and souvenir shop where you can grab some bite and gift.
Alviin G — Google review
Asahikawa Airport is a charming and efficient regional airport that offers a pleasant travel experience. The airport's compact size ensures that everything is easily accessible, making the transition from landing to cab pick-up remarkably quick and hassle-free. The facilities are well-maintained and clean, with a range of dining options and souvenir shops that showcase local specialties. One of the standout features is the flight viewing deck, which provides a fantastic vantage point to watch planes take off and land. This spacious deck, complete with seating, is a delightful addition that aviation enthusiasts and families will love. On clear days, the surrounding scenery, including distant mountains, adds to the experience, making the flight viewing platform a sweet topper to an already enjoyable airport visit. Additionally, don't miss the lovely cream dispenser lady offering delicious Hokkaido milk products – a delightful treat that adds to the airport's charm.
Hugh D — Google review
Small and efficient. 4 minutes from landing to exit (I didn’t have luggage. Has a few shops, a Lawson, car rental and information desks. Enjoyed the charging area on the 3rd floor (it’s free) before I flew back out.
Yossi S — Google review
Haneda, Narita, Itami, Shin-Chitose, and some international flights are in service. In terms of companies, there is ANA JAL AirDO JetStar and some foreign airlines. There is a food court and it is okay to take a flight at noon. For some reason, there was a flight simulator (a simple one). Buses were available to Asahikawa and Furano city. The observation deck is on the second floor, where you can see airplanes up close.
ぼくサノス — Google review
parking gates are not useful, not convinient. there are two gates in main parking area. however, often only one gate is open. so you might lose your time, a few minutes- over 10 minutes, for traffic jam. no hospitality for consumers.
