Tojinbo

Scenic spot
Outdoor Activities
Tojinbo, located in Fukui Prefecture, is a captivating destination known for its dramatic cliffs that overlook the Sea of Japan. This ancient and rugged location offers visitors a chance to explore attractions such as the dynamic columnar cliffs of Tojinbo, Maruoka Castle, and Mikuni Minato. The coastal basalt cliffs of Tojinbo stretch over one kilometer and have been formed by the relentless erosion of the sea.
Probably a must-visit! Went there at mid August and the weather was perfectly fine with breeze. The scene was just awe-inspiring and a nice place to just take a rest and enjoy the scenery.

We visited on 8.4.2025, where cherry blossoms peaked. There wasn’t a lot of crashing waves but the views were excellent as it was a sunny day. It is a 30 minute drive from Fukui city centre. Nearby there are a few restaurants but a handful were closed on our visit. The cruise gave a whole new perspective on the columns and we sure did enjoy our time here.

Tojinbo Cliffs, Fukui|A Stunning Coastal Wonder of Japan Located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, Tojinbo is one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. These rugged cliffs stretch for about 1 km along the Sea of Japan and are famous for their dramatic rock formations and powerful waves crashing below. Often featured in Japanese crime dramas, the sheer scale and natural force of Tojinbo leave a lasting impression on all who visit. ◆ Top Highlights of Tojinbo ■ Cliffside Viewpoints The uniquely shaped columnar joint rock formations are a rare geological feature. From the top of the cliffs, especially near the “Oike” (Great Basin) area, enjoy a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the Sea of Japan. ■ Senjojiki Area Get close to the sea by climbing down to the rock-covered shoreline. You can walk across the natural stone slabs and feel the power of the ocean up close. ■ Sunset Spot Tojinbo is one of the best places in Japan to watch the sun set into the ocean. Each season offers a different and unforgettable view—perfect for photography lovers. ■ Tojinbo Shopping Street Right near the cliffs, this charming street is lined with souvenir shops and local food stalls. Enjoy fresh Echizen crab, sweet shrimp skewers, and other regional delicacies. ■ Tojinbo Sightseeing Boat Take a cruise along the base of the cliffs to see Tojinbo from a whole new perspective. The boat ride offers stunning views not visible from land. ◆ The Legend Behind the Name “Tojinbo” is named after a monk from the Heian period who, according to legend, was pushed off the cliffs due to a romantic dispute. It’s said that the sea raged for 49 days after his fall. ◆ What Visitors Are Saying “A thrilling experience with an amazing view of the Sea of Japan.” “Watching the sunset here was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.” “Great food and fun souvenir shopping at the nearby street.” “The boat cruise gave us a completely new angle of this natural wonder!” #Tojinbo #TojinboSnap #FukuiJapan #FukuiTravel #JapanScenery #CliffView #SunsetSpot #SeaOfJapan #EchizenCrab #StreetFoodJapan #NatureLovers #TravelJapan #ExploreJapan #ReelsJapan Tojinbo is a must-visit destination in Fukui that combines natural beauty, local culture, and fascinating legends. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or family, this iconic coastal spot offers a truly unforgettable experience.
風来坊 — Google review
Went here during Golden Week. There were so many people as it was a holiday, but it was a good experience. The weather was very good that day, making it even more picturuseque and good views from the cliff. For ¥500 you can also have a bird's eye view from the Tojinbo tower nearby. There's a couple of shops and restaurants leading up to the cliff. We ate some really good squid in one of them. I was hoping to buy some omiyage, but I didn't find any that was to my liking. It's about an 1hr from Fukui station. Use the echizen railway, ride until the last stop. Cross the road, there's a bus stop near the station, ride the local bus 1 stop for about 10 minutes, and voila, you're there.
Faith K — Google review
Beautiful and unique in view sea of Japan, but bit dangerous. Better to be carful on your foot steps. Not very far from Fukui city. Car park available around ¥500.
Chaminda M — Google review
An interesting place to visit but I wasn't that impressed. The cliff itself is very beautiful but quite small. Getting there from Fukui is not so easy by transportation. The restaurants and souvenir shops were a bit old fashioned.
Matias S — Google review
Beautiful worth the drive. Wonderful view. Breath taking. Blown away all the worries.

It’s a great visiting spot with breathtaking cliffs and scenic ocean view known as suicidal spot. Very popular and worth it to visit.

Echizen Matsushima Aquarium

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Exhibit
Echizen Matsushima Aquarium is a small seaside aquarium in Fukui, Japan, offering various attractions such as touch pools, penguin and dolphin shows, and encounters with seals. Visitors can enjoy interacting with animals like turtles and dolphins. The staff's exceptional care for the animals is evident. While the aquarium may appear run-down due to its proximity to the ocean, it offers an enriching experience for families with opportunities to interact with marine life.
To get here, board the bus from Mikuni station. It's a relatively big area aquarium for an outskirt town. The place has a few buildings for different sea life. There's also a beautiful cliff view at the side of the place. For ¥2200 for adults, I would say it's worth the price for those who love marine animals.
Tan H — Google review
This is a small aquarium but with multiple different buildings. Entry fees are higher than average — 2200 yen for adults and half that for children. We went to see the dolphin show that lasted 15 minutes and was impressive. We went later in the day meaning there wasn’t a lot of people. Some exhibits allowed you to touch the fish, such as octopus, or let you feed them. There is a free parking lots available on site, or by bus can get you off nearby.
Lucas L — Google review
Pro tip: Make sure to buy your tickets in advance to get a 500 yen discount! The aquarium is relatively small, but I easily spent 2 hours here. They have turtles, dolphins, penguins, and many more! I especially loved the penguin area, as well as walking into the room with the tortoise enjoying himself. The staff was exceptional; you can see they take good care of their animals.
R U — Google review
Assalamualaikum brother. This place located in Fukui Japan. There are many attractions that you can watch in this place. Dolphins attractions was amazing. The parking area is free. The entrance fee was about 2,200¥ for adult and 1,600 for elementary and Junior high school students. Recommended for your family.
Asrul S — Google review
It is a great place for kids. Loads to do, not so much watching but interacting with animals and I touching them etc. I suspect it isn't very ethical like many japanese aquariums and zoos but I didn't get the impression it was overly cruel.
Tim M — Google review
It's a small town aquarium. I can't speak on how animal treatment. Every country has different standards, it is what it is. I can only say the people that worked there seemed like they genuinely cared. It is kinda run down but literally right next to the ocean. It's going to erode faster. If you're in the area I think it's worth a visit.
Sam — Google review
You can watch it up close. There are performances by dolphins, penguins, etc. It still makes me sad to see them trapped in a small space.
Lance T — Google review
Aquarium located near Tojinbo, where we find a range of very interesting fish species. There is a show with dolphins at specific times. I found the entrance fee a bit expensive, 2000 yen per person, but, on the other hand, parking is free.

Shibamasa World

Theme park
Fun & Games
Shibamasa World is a family-friendly park and campsite located near Sakai City, offering a variety of attractions for both adults and children. The park features extreme water slides, kids' pools, a roller coaster, golf courses, go carts, and green lawns. Visitors can enjoy activities such as playing in the wave pool by the sea or exploring the Amazon jungle forest indoor pool.
Even though its indoor activities only, at the time we visit on winter my kids always love the place from the 1st to 3rd floor of the building .
Ai O — Google review
Fun, family-friendly water park. We went after 5 pm (early of August 2025), so we didn't have much time to play the attractions. But it was not a problem for us. Being at the beach pool during sunset was amazing. Unforgettable view. Notes: if you wear overall swimsuit, you will go very fast on slider, so be prepared! Review: - Caribbean Viking: okay - Caribbean beach pool: the view, especially during sunset, is AMAZING! Highly recommended! - The MONSTER SLIDER: really really fun! (costs additionally 500 yen per person) - Triple Swirl: personally did not enjoy it because the all-closed tube part made me feel uncomfortable and dizzy, but the no-roof part was fun! - Adventure Slider: enjoyable - Other sliders: it might seem simple, but it was really enjoyable!

For me it’s excellent place for a whole family to go. A bit expensive for a bungalow but we really enjoy the place we love it🥰 all the staff are so kind❣️
Kishimoto V — Google review
Too busy, every so often called pool closes for 15min, stupid. Waterside cost extra, and very long queues. Half of the rides closed. Avoid at all!!!
Romy E — Google review
A fun place with various attractions. The kids enjoyed the go carts and water slides. There's wide green lawns, which are a rarity in Japan. The golf courses are fun, but they are all min golf style. The wavel-less wave pool is still refreshing, but a bit of a disappointment. Good food choices at reasonable prices.
David M — Google review
Definitely buy your tickets before coming as the check in system is ridiculously slow. However, once your inside it's great fun for everyone. But, the food is overpriced and serves pretty much only typical fast sugary food along with sugary drinks. Waiting to go on the slides is heavy duty especially if it's sunny. There is still plenty to do if you don't want to wait. It's showing it's age now, but I'd go back when the chance arises again.
David S — Google review
The park doesnt allow tattoo, which makes harder the foreigner life in Japan
Yuri — Google review
Fun place for all the family! Definitely cover up if you have fair skin—very easy to get sunburnt. The wave pool right by the sea was our favorite and our little one enjoyed the Amazon jungle forest indoor pool.

Fureai Park Sanrihama is a farmer's market that closes slightly early, so it's recommended to have dinner by 4 o'clock for the last order. The market offers a wide range of unique products from different regions. It's also an excellent place to purchase souvenirs such as locally made crafts and processed foods. Additionally, Mikuni Port is nearby, providing the opportunity to indulge in fresh sashimi meals for lunch at 11:00.

I was expecting to pay but the entrance is free! There's an indoor and outdoor play area for children. There is a 0-6 years zone for young children inside with a small slide, cooking toys and padded area. The large field outside is great for children to run around and have fun. Really great place to bring children to burn energy.

Angel land Fukui is definitely a great place for kids to play and also for older people to experience and learn about the space. It is big enough for everyone and offers a great green garden with a very calm playground. Nearby you will find a park with much greenery as well. Not close is a library. Defennetly worth a visit with or without kids.

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Mikuni Sunset Beach is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a sandy stretch lined with shops and bars. It's known for its shallow waters, making it safe for children to play. The nearby Yua Port Mikuni Jetty provides opportunities for fishing, while the beach itself offers a more adult atmosphere at places like Hamachaya and Hama Bar. Visitors can enjoy stunning sunset views over the Sea of Japan and even catch fireworks displays at times.
Good place to take a hot bath and eat. View is spectacular, especially in the evening. Also you can enjoy starting fireworks on the beach, BBQ, swimming or fishing near this place. If you are coming bach from 東尋坊, it might be a good stop before coming back home.

I was here during winter (in December) to catch the sunset. But I was bewildered with the amount of trash on the beach. (Translated by Google) The diorama of ``Mikuni Minato in its heyday'' (see photo), with its magnificent red-tiled warehouses and Sengoku ships filling the port, is extremely impressive and impressive, and it seems to convey the richness and hustle and bustle of the port at the time. These local exhibits were so interesting that it was worth coming all the way from far away (lol). For someone like me who is interested in ship trade in the Sea of Japan from the Edo to the Meiji periods, just the sight of the gigantic Sengoku-bune sitting in the museum hall is irresistible (lol). Since ancient times, Mikuni Minato has prospered due to shipping on the Kitamaebune and the Kuzuryu River. The carrying capacity of a ``boat'' is overwhelming, and if it were to be transported overland by horseback, it would probably only be able to carry 4 bales of rice, but if it were a boat, even a relatively small river vessel called ``Takase Bune'' could easily load 200 to 300 bales of rice. That's why people in the past went to the trouble of digging canals and building castle towns along rivers. There is another reason why Minato Town prospered, and that is because there was no concept of "corporate tax" during the Edo period. Therefore, the huge profits gained from trade go directly to Futokoro. It was considered embarrassing for a proud samurai to take advantage of a lowly merchant. Large ship owners who own 20 or 30 ships can't stop laughing because one Kitamae ship makes a profit of about 100 million yen in present value by making a round trip between Ezochi and Osaka once a year. . With his abundant wealth, he became a patron of calligraphy, paintings, and antiques, and built an elaborate mansion. The Kishida family residence and Morita Bank that remain in Mikuni Minato are remnants of that time. Another feature of the Sengoku Ship is that it does not simply transport consigned cargo, but also buys the goods itself and conducts transactions while monitoring market prices at the port of call. For this reason, ships may be moored at ports for long periods of time, which is advantageous for Mikuni Minato. In addition to bad weather, sailors at the time were faced with the terrifying existence of sea bream beetles. Although they are a type of bivalve, they are also called ``sea termites'' because they eat through wood and leave holes in it. However, it is weak in fresh water and its activity subsides. Mikuni Minato is located at the mouth of the Kuzuryu River, so long-term business negotiations are possible if you anchor a little upstream. Trade via Sengoku-bune reached its peak in the early Meiji period, when restrictions imposed by the Shogunate were abolished. In fact, Sengoku-bune was active until quite recently (lol). However, ships take a long time to transport and are susceptible to weather conditions. For this reason, in the late Meiji period, rail services with regular service became the mainstay, and truck services, which were more flexible, became the main route, and this has continued to the present day. With the development of telegraphs and other technologies, it became difficult to do the ``millet'' business that took advantage of market price differences, and the prosperity of Mikuni Minato became a thing of the past. The current quiet state of Mikuni Minato can be seen from the museum observation deck. The view was spectacular, and I was able to feel the history of the port and the sunset over the mouth of the Kuzuryu River made for an impressive visit.

The elementary school students were excited by the "trick art" that was everywhere in the museum and the cute illustrations by aiMIKI in the kids' corner. The junior high school students learned a lot from seeing the real Jomon pottery that they learned about in class. The adults looked closely at the festival exhibits and the real ribbon industry, and enjoyed the view from the rooftop. The stairs to the rooftop are very beautiful! At the museum shop, you should definitely buy a key chain with aiMIKI's cute illustration as a souvenir. The children were indecisive, saying, "They're all so cute, I can't choose..." Even if something is not on sale, when I asked, "Do you have another one of this in stock?" the staff member looked for it in the stock area. I was disappointed when I saw it at a glance and it wasn't in stock, but the staff member found it and said, "Ah! We have it!" and we were able to purchase it. It's not crowded, the staff are kind, and I think it's a good museum where you can learn about Sakai City in detail. Admission fee is 500 yen, parking is free. When I searched for shrines and temples near Awara Onsen, I found a lot of reviews for Mikuni Shrine and Takidani Temple, so I visited both. From the reception desk, there is a long, gentle slope leading to the shrine. It has a very nice atmosphere and I feel like it cleanses my soul. It was unusual to see a green non-slip mat. It's true that cobblestone streets are slippery, so I think this is a good measure. As you pass through the Sanmon gate, you will see magnificent weeping cherry blossoms. Even if the flowers are not in bloom, the sight of them in full bloom seems to come to mind. In addition, the rock garden in front of Kannon-do Hall is covered with bright green moss. I love moss, so this place alone is worth the price of admission. When you enter the main hall, you will first be given a brief explanation by the chief priest, and after that you are free to explore. You can also see the first garden in Fukui Prefecture to be designated as a scenic spot, but personally, I liked the view of the rock garden from Kannon-do Hall better. On this day, it was reserved for private use, so I was able to enjoy it to my heart's content. After leaving the main hall, don't forget to stop by the treasure hall. There are some national treasures and important cultural properties, but due to my lack of knowledge, I couldn't understand their value. It must be amazing to see it, but I was only able to take a quick look at it. The thing that caught my eye most was the handwritten letter from Nobunaga Oda and Katsuie Shibata. Nobunaga's letter was a prohibition against the Ikko sect, which was his enemy, and meant, ``Do not attack this temple.'' Nobunaga has the image of a rough-and-tumble person, but his handwriting is so clean and clear that it makes you think that he really is the handwriting of a general. On the other hand, I have forgotten the name of Katsuie's letter, but it seems like it was about giving him something as a gift...The font was rougher than Nobunaga's, and had the image of ``Oni Shibata.'' However, in recent years, he has been praised as a military commander who ruled brilliantly for the development of Fukui. It depends on what you are looking for in a shrine or temple, but for me this temple was very satisfying. I would definitely like to visit again.

Brief Message from the Heart Museum

Museum
Exhibit
The Brief Message from the Heart Museum, situated near Maruoka Castle, showcases a diverse range of exhibits, including humorous and poignant content. The museum features tanka and somonka poems that mimic letters, offering an intriguing literary perspective. Visitors can explore the culture of expressing profound messages through concise writing. One notable exhibit is a letter by Honda Sakuzaemon Shigetsugu to his wife, reflecting his devotion to family and loyalty in just a few words.
Brief Message from the Heart Museum is located right across the street from Maruoka Castle. The museum was opened in 2015. Since Japan has a culture to expressing a message in one stroke of brief writing which contains a lot of meanings. The museum displays masterpiece of prize-winning brief letters from a letter contest held in Japan started in 1993. The motif of this museum is a writing style of Honda Shigetsugu who was a vassal of Tokugawa Shogunate. Shigetsugu often wrote a message to his family in his time in a brief writing style which conveys a lot of messages. Later this style of writing was much recognized as a beautiful form of art. In this museum you can see a large collection of brief messages collected from the past for more than 20 years. Please feel how those letters expressed within 40 count of letters can convey one's thoughts and feelings to your heart. In a section called Fumino Taki " Waterfall of letters " displays prize-winning works in 10-meter wide screens with impression of waterfall in the background. Up on its top floor is a observation room where you can command a nice view of the townscape around Maruoka Castle. There is a movie introducing seasonal attraction of the city shown in the room with a large screen. From time to time they make a project of special exhibition. ( Trans-word+ : TGM Japan Guide )

I was intrigued by several lanterns bearing short letters halfway up the slope leading from the parking lot to Maruoka Castle, and since the Letter Museum is located very close to Maruoka Castle, I decided to stop by for a bit. Many of the short, poignant letters, each just 40 characters long, were on display, arranged in an ingenious way. The roots of short letters lie in a letter written to his wife from the battlefield by Honda Sakuzaemon Shigetsugu, a loyal retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu who earned the renowned bravery of Onisakuza, titled "A letter to you: Be careful of fire. Don't make Osen cry. Fatten the horses." This is said to be a model for a letter that clearly and succinctly conveys the intended purpose. The "Osen" mentioned in this letter is Honda Shigeshige, who later became the lord of Maruoka Domain and whose childhood name was Senchiyo. The "Japan's Shortest Letter Ichibu Keijo Award," which receives many entries from all over the country every year, is said to have started with the motif of a letter from Honda Sakuzaemon Shigetsugu. Yamani Fishery

Yamani Fishery offers delectable BBQ seafood that is both fresh and appetizing. The prices are fairly competitive, although the restaurant tends to get overcrowded. However, if you don't mind the limited seating options, it's definitely worth trying their local grilled seafood while on the go. Don't miss out on experiencing the remarkable flavors of Mikuniminato seafood and Echizen crab offered here.
We came here to try their infamous Snow Crab, also known as Echizen Gani, which is a seasonal seafood during winter. But this crab is really expensive despite that it was on season, so we ordered the cheapest available option, just to have a taste on it. The crab meat was sweet and very delicious. Their grilled squids was nice too. The atmosphere was very comfortable, and cozy, with Japanese style short table seating, where you have to take off your shoes to sit inside.

It's run directly by a fish shop and the food is good, but I don't think this is the place to go. If you go to Tsuruga or Fukui Central Market, you can find cheap and delicious restaurants.

Moriyasu

Soba noodle shop
Udon noodle restaurant
Moriyasu, a renowned soba eatery in Mikuni, attracts large crowds during holiday lunch hours. However, on this particular day, there was no queue and entry was effortless. The establishment is furnished with tatami mats and tables, exuding the ambiance of an esteemed soba joint. Their signature dishes include sauce katsudon, tempura bowl, and grated soba.
A popular soba spot in Fukui. The place had a nice, relaxed vibe. I tried their famous "oroshi soba," and it was so good! I will come back again.

Super delicious soba with some healthy bite from the daikon oroshi. It has all the charm of a old traditional restaurant along with a casual vibe. Although there tends to be a lineup, we did not have to wait too long to get a seat. If you are seeking home made soba you won't go wrong stopping by here.

(Translated by Google) While sightseeing in Fukui, I visited "Soba Dokoro Moriyasu." The large wooden sign is aged and sophisticated. The restaurant's appearance suggests a nice atmosphere. The cozy interior quickly filled up. It seems to attract both tourists and locals, so I'm excited! While browsing the menu, I spotted the Sauce Katsudon (Pork Cutlet Bowl) 👀 I was so lucky, since I didn't think I'd be able to eat it on this trip. I ordered a set of grated radish soba and sauce katsudon 📢 While enjoying my hot soba tea, the long-awaited grated radish soba and sauce katsudon arrived 🥢 I excitedly opened the lid, and the delicious aroma of bonito flakes and the pungent scent of grated daikon radish wafted through the air. The freshly fried sauce katsudon also had an irresistible aroma of sauce! Let's eat! 👏 Starting with the soba noodles 🍜 With one bite, the tangy kick of the grated daikon radish hits me. The umami flavor of the dashi and bonito flakes hits you later, which is great. And the soba noodles themselves are amazing. The chewy soba noodles have a nice texture and go down smoothly. The aroma of the soba spreads as you chew, making it delicious. 😋 The aroma and spice of the grated daikon radish complement the rich flavor, making for a truly enjoyable dish. It's simple, but so delicious! I was also looking forward to the sauce katsudon. 🥢 Freshly fried pork cutlet on top of warm rice, with the sweet aroma of sauce - it's a winner... One bite and it was just as delicious as I imagined. 😋 The pork cutlet, smothered in a sweet sauce, pairs perfectly with the rice! I alternated between the rich and delicious sauce katsudon and the spicy grated daikon radish soba noodles, and finished it in no time. Grated daikon radish soba noodles and sauce katsudon...Fukui cuisine...great! 👍 I was able to enjoy both and was truly satisfied! The restaurant has a nostalgic feel and a nice atmosphere. Maybe it was just that day, but the tempura bowl broth was too thick, so I couldn't taste the soba noodles. It was right in the middle of a long weekend, and there were a lot of people there from outside the prefecture, so I thought maybe they were just too busy. Seafood restaurant
Echizen Kaninobou is a simple restaurant known for its seasonal crab menus, as well as offerings like abalone and sea urchins. While it's famous for its crab dishes, visitors have found that the sashimi and soba are of good quality even when crabs are not in season. The dining room offers a view of the seashore and the train station.
Excellent seafood. If you are an Uni fan you should definitely try it here. Everything fresh and with impeccable service. This place is only open for lunch with last order at 14:30.

We stopped at the restaurant around 5:45pm and I went in to check if it was opened for business as the town was quiet. A gentleman greeted me and advised that it’s not crab season yet so they served other sashimi dishes. He also suggested other cooked items for kids. We decided to try and was pleasantly surprised by the good quality of the sashimi and soba. Our dinning room window overlooks the seashore and the train station. We’ll definitely come back again and try their crabs!

Its spacious parking lot, easy-to-enter interior, and easy-to-choose menu offer a family-style experience, making it a great place to enjoy Echizen soba, even though many soba restaurants tend to be finicky and privately run. The prices are also reasonably priced for a Fukui soba restaurant. The menu also includes Fukui's specialty, the sauce cutlet bowl. Five varieties: strawberry, melon, plum, blueberry, and lemon. I went with strawberry and melon at my kids' request, and the gentle sweetness of the fruit was amazing. The deep-fried sake buns came in three varieties: plain, sesame, and kinako. The freshly fried food, fresh after we ordered, had a delicious crispy texture and subtle sweetness. Of course it was freshly made, but the chopped rakkyo gave it a light accent, and the sauce was a bit sparse, so I was able to fully enjoy the flavor of the burger. And potatoes! Unlike other restaurants, it's warm and delicious! If you're only planning on having a burger, please try the fries as well. The only negative was that the chairs were a little dirty, so that was a shame. There is no place to park your car, so we recommend the free parking lot in front of the Sakai City Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It is within 5 minutes walk.

The store is a renovated building that was originally a lumber dealer, and in addition to being a restaurant, it also hosts various events. For a late lunch around 3pm on a weekday, I took out the most popular Mikuni Burger (700 yen). The soft feel of the buns comes from the cooked rice kneaded into the dough. The domestic beef and pork patties without fillers are grilled after ordering, so they are extremely fragrant. Plus thick-sliced tomatoes, fluffy crunchy lettuce, and local Mikuni-grown rakkyo are accents. It's delicious! Birdland

Pizza restaurant
If you're on the hunt for an unforgettable dining experience, look no further than Birdland. Nestled in a charming wooden house, this cozy restaurant offers a delightful atmosphere that feels like stepping into Italy. With its authentic wood-fired oven, Birdland serves up some of the best Neapolitan pizza you'll find in Japan—each bite is a testament to the owner's Italian training. The menu features not only perfectly balanced pizzas but also surprisingly delicious brick oven shrimp that you can enjoy whole!
On a snowy night the restaurant was so cosy and inviting. Great service and delicious food. Easily fit 6 of us in for dinner.

The soba noodles here are served bukkake style, with daikon radish soup poured over them. The daikon radish soup is quite spicy. The thick, chewy noodles are delicious. The grated daikon radish is also very sticky and clings well to the noodles. The portion of soba noodles is quite small, about half the size of a regular bowl. I finished it in about three bites. Uoshirou

Japanese restaurant
Restaurant
Uoshirou, a charming traditional eatery nestled in Mikuni's hidden back alley, boasts a captivating ambiance. With its tatami rooms and counter seating, one can unwind peacefully here. While priced moderately at around 2000 yen for lunch, it falls within the realm of being neither excessively costly nor overly cheap. As an esteemed establishment, the cuisine is undeniably reliable; however, some may find the offerings slightly lacking in originality.
Authentic cuisine with great service and all reasonably priced. The restaurant adjoins a traditional local house and is very charming.

What a gem! We found this restaurant more or less by coincidence, but what a find it was! This is a heritage site and it's almost a small museum with objects from the past, a beautiful inner garden surrounded by private rooms with traditional dining on tatami mats. By advance reservation only. The food is delicate, the menu is rather short but it's perfection. The ladies prepare the plates worthy of a 3 star Michelin restaurant. Seafood of course. The price is more than reasonable, especially for the quality provided.

5 stars for the atmosphere here. Sashimi and Tempura were tasty, but the back in time feeling and great service were spectacular. Had a lovely tatami room overlooking an outside garden. Great place to go if you want something totally different. Don't forget to browse around the mini museum in the back. Go here. Eat. Drink. Relax. Feel like you traveled back in time 150 years

Komatsu Airport

Airport
International airport
Regional airport
Komatsu Airport is a small local airport with a great viewing area to watch airplanes, including those from the nearby Komatsu Air Force base. The airport has a single passenger terminal building serving domestic and international flights. There are big shops on the first floor and smaller ones on the ground floor, but be cautious as some items may be overpriced. The information service is helpful and accommodating, even assisting with providing space for Ashar prayer for Muslim travelers.
I used Komatsu Airport today. It’s really disappointing that ANA flights will be reduced in the future. The airport opens at 6:25 a.m., and there are lounges for both ANA and JAL.
EISUKE I — Google review
Compact rural airport. The access is very bad. 1 hour to Fukui and Ishikawa. 12 mins to Komatsu station. The bus never waits for passengers at the bus stops even knowing that the airplane is landed. They always let passengers wait for 5-10 mins till the bus comes to the bus stops. Why cant they wait before passengers come out of the exit??? Cannot understand their operation at all. Plenty of shoos but limited and bad range of cafe/restaurants.
H I — Google review
Small but serves both national and international flights! The checking in line are long due to the limited service window for checking in flights and the security checkpoint for international flights is also very, very slow due to then only have one line and one X-ray machine to serve international passengers! The second floor duty free shop is pretty nice, lots choice for and the price is pretty fair!

Very convenient Airport with limited facilities behind the security checkpoints. The visitors deck on the top level is great for airplane spotting. The airplane shop is fantastic.

Very small airport with only two gates, yet incredibly chaotic. I’ve been flying as a Senator for over four years and have seen many airports, but I’ve never experienced anything like this. The staff seemed completely untrained – I almost missed my flight because they didn’t know how to process a simple payment for 5kg of excess baggage. I was the first at the airport and the last to reach the gate. Hardly anyone spoke even basic English. Definitely not what you'd expect from an airport. If possible, it’s better to just take the Shinkansen to Tokyo or Osaka instead.
Benjamin W — Google review
Komatsu Airport has limited security check spots, and waiting times skyrocket during the day. However the observation deck is wonderful, giving any aviation lover the time to admire the planes and sky. Komatsu is rather a small international airport, and has a really bad placement from Fukui, or even Komatsu Station. Thank you Komatsu Airport for a wonderful time.
Jiny N — Google review
Visited with my son for just to watch aeroplanes. This is a small local airport but rather many airplanes can be watched. Also there is the Komatsu Air Force base located right next to the airport. We didn't see any fighter flying this time, but with a bit of luck you might. Car parking lot is available, free to park for one hour.
