Hinoki Village

Mentioned on
12 lists
Heritage building
Sights & Landmarks
Hinoki Village, located in Chiayi City, Taiwan, is a cultural attraction featuring 28 renovated wooden historic buildings in Japanese style. These buildings were originally dormitories for officials involved in developing the logging industry at Alishan during the Japanese occupation. The village is named after hinoki, the primary construction material used for these structures. Visitors can wander through this historical site and learn about its significance during Japanese rule over Taiwan.
Strolling along the pathways and landscapes of the village is a delightful treat for tourists. Visitors can marvel at the exquisite Japanese architecture that shelters a variety of quaint shops, art galleries, and local restaurants. The serene surroundings and beautiful design make Hinoki Village a charming destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat while learning about Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage. Hinoki Village is conveniently located near other popular attractions, such as the Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park and the Song of the Forest, making it easy for visitors to explore these sites on foot. In our case, we began our visit at the Song of the Forest, which is located to the northwest of Hinoki Village. On our way there, we passed by the Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park, an additional historical spot that enhances the journey. We visited in early March, when the weather was perfect for a leisurely walk, making the experience even more enjoyable. While many visitors stick to the main areas of the village, if you're looking for a peaceful moment and a perfect shot without the crowds, take a walk toward the deeper corners of the village. These quieter spots offer a chance to fully appreciate the charm of the village in a more tranquil setting.

Date of visit: 23 August 2025. This place looks like Japan. The buildings and architecture are Japanese style. There are no entrance fees and lots of interesting shops. We bought some souvenirs such as dried fruits and wasabi salt. The stalls provided us with sample tasting and they tasted pretty good. There is also a drummer that play drums with Japanese songs. We are impressed.
Wei S — Google review
A range of beautifully kept and organised souvenir shops and cafes in former Japanese colonial era lodging area. Some of the shops are too generic, however, you can still find amazing authentic products from local brands! Definitely worth a check if you have a spare hour in Chiayi.
Vladislav K — Google review
Don’t expect a long street here. It’s simple and cute! A dose of Japan in the middle of Chiayi. The stores are charming - though some will def be overpriced. Personally loved entering the Hinoki store! The smell of the wooden figures were amazing!
Everlyn A — Google review
There are so many spots to take a picture, especially so fun, the goods have good quality and are affordable, the places are shady too and have many restaurants or snacks, it was incredible for us as foreigners to come to Hinoki But the toilet really smells bad and needs to be cleaned
Astrid M — Google review
Hinoki Village in Chiayi is a hidden gem rich in history, culture, and charm. This beautifully preserved site brings new life to a collection of Japanese-style wooden buildings that were once dormitories for workers during the hinoki (cypress) wood harvesting era. These structures date back to the Japanese occupation period, and today, they’ve been lovingly restored and transformed into a thriving cultural destination known as 文創園區 (Cultural and Creative Park). Wandering through Hinoki Village is a delightful way to spend an afternoon. The area is filled with quirky, creative shops, each offering something unique—from locally made crafts and artisanal goods to stylish souvenirs and one-of-a-kind keepsakes you won’t find anywhere else. Foodies will also enjoy exploring the wide array of food and drink stalls scattered around the village. From traditional Taiwanese snacks to refreshing beverages, there’s something to please every palate. One major highlight here is the Hinoki essential oil. If you're into aromatherapy, this place is heaven. The oils are extracted from the local cypress wood, and their quality is top-notch—fragrant, soothing, and surprisingly affordable. They also offer a range of hinoki wood products, allowing you to bring home a small piece of Taiwan’s natural heritage. The blend of culture, creativity, history, and nature makes Hinoki Village a must-visit. It’s not only a great spot for photos, but also a meaningful place to learn about Taiwan’s past and celebrate its craftsmanship. Highly recommended for visitors of all ages!
Juztin P — Google review
I am a bit jaded, having visited Japan twice in the last month. These buildings have low ceiling causing me to hit the ceiling beam twice. Walked about for 10-15 minutes, visited a snack shop then left.
Randy H — Google review
It was a very hot day, the place was not busy. The whole village consists of about 30 wooden buildings built during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. The building and the landscape were beautiful and tranquil.

Nature & Parks
Park
Chiayi Park, spanning 26.8 hectares, is an urban oasis with a rich historical and cultural significance. It features historic ruins, memorials, playgrounds, fountains, and bridges. The park serves as an outdoor museum showcasing different parts of the city's history and houses several places of worship within its borders. Away from the city center, this tranquil park has been a recreational space since Japanese colonial times.
Chiayi Park is truly perfect for relaxation! The park is spacious, shady, peaceful, and extremely comfortable for walking around on holidays. There's also the interesting Chiayi Tower where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city from up high. Additionally, there are museums and exhibition areas that reflect the culture of Chiayi city. The atmosphere is super chill - in the mornings and evenings, you'll see people exercising and families taking walks, creating a warm and friendly vibe. This city is charming from every angle! Highly recommended for anyone visiting Taiwan!

A public park where you can come without any entrance fee. This park is quite huge and there's quite many place for us to discover. Would recommend you guys to come and take an evening stroll here.

Pretty spacious park with museums, exhibits, the occasional event and the tower. Great place to experience Chiayi
Nicholas P — Google review
This is a very big and beautiful park with lots of resting places. Benches are everywhere, sit to have a snack, read a book, rest or chat with friends. I visited once in the afternoon on a Friday, was so charmed by it, visited again the next morning, which was a weekend. The park was vibrant with people taking their morning walks, others doing their exercise or dance in their little groups. It is interesting to immerse myself among the locals, watching how they spend their mornings at the park. Wanted to share those photos but just couldn’t call up those photos on iPhone, only photos from the Friday afternoon is shared here. There is a playground too for the kids and restrooms are also easily accessible, though not in the cleanest state. The morning air is cool and fresh, not noisy despite there were many people going about with their activities. The paths are easy to walk and is wheelchair friendly too for most part of the park. I simply love this park, as it gives my weak aching knees a break from climbing more stairs. Beside it is the Chiayi Botanical Gardens, so do hop over too without having to make a separate trip on another day.
FIVE-A-DAY — Google review
Great park with multiple playgrounds. Signage could be better as the park is very large (ironically had to rely on google maps for the playground locations). Lots of gardens and things to look at. Don’t forget to hire a car plastic sliding mat from the coffee shop for the artificial grass slide!
CuriousPanda — Google review
It is a nice relaxing place. Plenty of room for group activities or places you can sit and relax. It is surrounded by different shops if you need food.
Andrew S — Google review
I used to go here as an infant and child with my parents and relatives and the park has expanded and become more developed all whole keeping its natural feel and it feels like the city is instead building around it rather than into it. The nature is amazing as well as all the sights and it's a really good place to take a walk; nothing too challenging.
Derex — Google review
A very beautiful park where you can find a peaceful atmosphere and relax. There are some monuments that add a traditional feeling and which are, of course, worth seeing. As the park is big, you should plan enough time to be able to see it completely without rushing. A must see in Chiayi! And also, right next to the park is the Chiayi Botanical Garden, which is a must see too.

Wenhua Road Night Market

Mentioned on

Night market
Store
Wenhua Road Night Market is a 500-meter open-air market located in Chiayi's West district, offering a wide array of local Taiwanese cuisine and street food. It's a paradise for food enthusiasts, featuring an exhilarating atmosphere with shops selling clothes and shoes at affordable prices. Visitors can indulge in Taiwanese delicacies such as oyster omelets, stinky tofu, Chiayi turkey rice, and braised pork rice.
Popular night market when you visit Chiayi. Walkable from most hotels and hostels since it’s at the center and near the train station. You shoulf try the sweet potato balls! It’s one of the best that I’ve tried in Taiwan specially if you add plum powder. The road is also wide which makes it easy to buy and eat plus the vendors are extremely nice compared to other night markets I’ve been to.
Emeterio ( — Google review
High three/low four. There are a lot of food stalls, as well as some drinks, games and clothes shops. Traffic flows through, making it a little dangerous and requires people to be aware of traffic. The spur along Zhongheng road is actually a bit nicer and more pedestrian friendly.
魯大海 — Google review
Many foods and drinks around this night market. We stay at Lam Kuai Fong Garden Hotel. Walking distance to the market. Recommended. Less crowded.
William T — Google review
It was a calm night, not crowded and a very, very hot day... There were not too many choices, but they were all good... It's a little pricey for be a night market but the food was fresh...
O J — Google review
Very basic and short night market. Nothing really worth mentioning much to me :) But still a fun walk. There may be a few beggars around though.
Everlyn A — Google review
Fairly standard selection of night market foods. Does get quite busy, but never super packed.
Nicholas P — Google review
It is a disappointing night market. The stalls are sparse with little to no places to rest/ eat. The roads are not blocked and allows motor vehicles to pass through. It is unsafe for walking individuals. Food items also appear to be expensive. 1 serving of stinky tofu costs 80NTD but at least you could grab and seat and enjoy the food. Another stall down the road sold 1 serving of stinky tofu at 100NTD. As takeout. Jingcheng Night Market has stinky tofu for only 65NTD. My friend and I visited Wenhua for a second night in a row and realised a number of stall vendors were missing from the night before. We ended up having Burger King two streets away.

Night market in Chiayi, walking distance from Chiayi train station. Spacious and not over crowded. Many ppl queuing for the Smart fish soup. Near the cultural park where we watched a international band competition

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park is a free-of-charge tourist attraction in Chiayi that showcases historic steam and diesel locomotives, as well as freight and passenger cars. Located in a verdant environment, visitors can take advantage of several photo opportunities. While there are limited chances to explore the interiors of trains - most have been converted into restrooms - the park offers insights into the history of Alishan forest railway and recognizes the dedication required for its upkeep.
This is a place where you can closely view the Alishan railway trains. You can experience the nostalgic charm of the old trains and locomotives. The atmosphere is pleasant and inviting. There are many museums in the nearby area. I really love this place!
Poramaa P — Google review
I hurried over in the morning and took a quick look from the side- it’s quite a large area. Since I had to catch a ride to Alishan, I didn’t have time to visit. Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to come back to Chiayi next time
Dodo L — Google review
The park itself is clean. The public restroom smells. The trains themselves are not maintained with rusty paints etc. its a shame, if they're well maintained it'll be such a beautiful park with historic trains. It felt like "train dumpster site". Waste time going here.
Lim S — Google review
Experience the beauty of nature and immerse yourself in the vista of blooming flowers along the Alishan Forest Railway, while fully inhaling the fresh air amidst the valley. If you're looking to plan a nature-focused trip to Taiwan, we recommend exploring the romantic railway line in Alishan.
Banyapon P — Google review
A short distance walk from Hinoki village so you can visit both places within the span of a few hours. A must-go for railway train lovers - a cool place with quite the variety of railway trains and designs. Free to enter and lots of space for photo-taking with the trains and along the rails. Barely any visitors on a weekday afternoon so spam photos to your heart's desire.
Eng P — Google review
We entered for free on a Saturday morning. Well kept place. There was a train coming in and it was amazing to see up close.
MrsWayfarer — Google review
Nice place to check out the Alishan trains. Free access and we went here while on a bike. Cool 10-20 minute tour
Christine S — Google review
This is a nice stop in Chiayi. There are many opportunities for pictures. It is free of charge, so if you're in the area might as well go. It would be cooler if there were more opportunities to go inside trains. The only trains you could go into were changed into bathrooms. 🤣

Chiayi Old Prison, originally constructed in 1922, has been transformed into a museum since 2011. This historic site offers guided tours that delve into the prison's history and treatment of inmates. As one of Taiwan's oldest and best-preserved prisons, it provides insight into Chiayi's past and the evolution of the country's prison system. The museum showcases well-preserved cells, visitation rooms, bathrooms, and a central-monitoring station.
I have not been to many places like this before! It’s very historical, only one of the two prisons of such kind, with another being in Japan. Definitely worth a visit if you want to know more about the grim history of Taiwan under Japanese occupation. The visiting route is easy to follow, lots of small details here and there. Most of the descriptions are in Chinese, but can be easily translated with Google Translate. It can be family friendly as well, as it’s not too spooky.
Vladislav K — Google review
We visited Chiayi Old Prison, and it was an unexpectedly good experience. The prison, built during the Japanese colonial period, offers a unique window into Taiwan’s history that’s both eerie and fascinating. Walking through the old cells and courtyards, you can almost feel the weight of the past. The layout of the prison is unlike anything I’ve seen before, with its star-shaped design that allowed guards to keep an eye on multiple wings at once. It’s a reminder of the stark reality of life in a place like this, and it really hits home how different things were back then. What made the visit even more interesting was learning about the different roles the prison has played throughout its history—first under the Japanese and later during other key periods in Taiwan’s development. The information panels were super helpful in explaining the prison’s past and the people who were incarcerated there. Overall, Chiayi Old Prison is a must-see if you’re in the area and have an interest in history. It’s not the most typical tourist spot, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you want a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s past. It’s haunting in a way but also incredibly informative.
Robin S — Google review
Place is very well managed. It is very well preserved and they have many belongings of the prisoners and historical structures preserved. One thing that could really improve the experience is adding English timelines and explanations for non mandarin speakers.
Dhaval C — Google review
It’s a well-preserved Japanese-era prison, spacious and interesting to visit. You can see artifacts from that time, as well as models of several prisons around Taiwan.
Neti H — Google review
Had a really good experience here. You get to learn about the history of the museum (including the Japanese era) and walk down the cells. You can go into the cells as well to have an idea of their living conditions. Most exhibits however are in Chinese. There are many friendly people in the museum (I assume they take care of the area) that would bring you around if you asked them! A museum lady saw me looking around and offered to explain to me the significance of some exhibits, which helped me in understanding better.
Xiang H — Google review
Ok to spend an hour or so to visit if you have time in the area. It is not a must see, but is presented reasonably well that one can learn and understand a bit about this prison and its design.
David Y — Google review
Free entrance. There is no more guided tour due to pandemic. Please note the visiting hours too, there is a lunch break in between. Could really imagine how it was when it was functioning as a prison. The alley to the rooms were eerie - so much of a prison. And the arts were very touching 😢 拼出圆满 💕
Pei — Google review
Interesting place with long history. You could see the old prison cells that date back all the way to 1920s. The museum also includes information on other prisons in Taiwan. Many areas are currently under construction though (including the restrooms) so I didn’t see too much. The downsides for me are: limited parking space, no AC, no restrooms, no English-speaking guide. Also, on the exhibition of the artwork - I personally find some of them a bit odd because they seem to be out of place with the prison site itself.

Nestled in Shanziding, Chiayi Botanical Garden sprawls across 8.6 hectares and serves as the experimental ground for the city's Forestry Research Institute. The garden is home to over 140 species of trees, including towering Chinese firs, Brazilian rubber, Alstonia, Hook Pines, and West Indian Mahogany. Visitors can stroll along winding paths amidst the tranquil ambiance and lush vegetation while encountering ponds with fish and turtles.
First of all, in the Chiayi Botanical Garden, you will find an unexpected level of quietness for a place located in a big city, which is great if you want to get your mind away from busy life for a while. But you will also find an awesome vegetation, some animals like fish or turtles in ponds, and of course, long paths that will show you all these while strolling calmly. If you are a nature lover, this place is for you!

I really love this park. It’s a nice place to go there for a walk or just sit down and watch people. In the evening after sunset, there can be some mosquito’s. There are also enough toilets.

Lots of tall trees and thick vegetation. It feels cool even in hot summer days.

Chiayi Botanic Garden [CBG] or Botanic Garden, Chiayi, is next to Chiayi Forest Park, and it is often mixed up or considered Chiayi Botanic Garden to be part of Chiayi Forest Park, although two parks belong to different government agencies. In general, Chiayi Botanic Garden has more varieties of trees and flowers and is managed from the perspectives of conservation ecology and conservation forestry studies. The trees in the CBG are generally taller, older, and well preserved for their original natures. The CBG is free for access, and there are free street parking spaces along Minhchuang East Road, though spaces are limited. CBG has free bathroom.
Ben H — Google review
This botanical garden is the oasis of the city and it seems the connection between Alishan and downtown Chia-yi city as a used-to-be forest research centre. The sounds of cicada relieved the stress and tall trees covering sunshine in hot summer could also release exhausted tiredness.

The Taiwan Heritage Museum, also known as the 臺灣花磚博物館, is a wooden house museum that houses thousands of preserved ceramic tiles from across Taiwan. The museum boasts an impressive collection and knowledgeable staff who are eager to share information about their craft. One exceptional aspect of the museum is the service provided by its staff, who go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction.
Came to this Museum of Old Taiwan Tiles. Didn't know there was an entrance fee of NT 100, but decided to pay and went in to have a look. Quite a small space, with double storeys and two small attics. But the collection of tiles were quite interesting and extensive. Quite worth paying for the entrance fee. It was crowded even on a Thursday afternoon when I went. But thankfully, I didn't have to wait to get in. Every single tile was like a photo spot. Even the shoe rack and toilet were dressed up with the tiles. Really pretty.

05/05/25, Museum of Old Taiwan Tiles, $100 entry fee. Totally a nominal fee. I am thankful for this private organization preserving such a quaint period of Taiwan’s history. The museum curators have laid bare for us a lovely example of how houses in Taiwan were typically furnished. Thank you for preserving and protecting this lovely period of Taiwan’s history. And thank you for sharing it in the form of this museum. Bravo to you for these well orche efforts that you all have done here. Thank you.

small museum but worth the visit! there's a small entrance fee but you also get a discount on your purchases. they sell all sorts of souvenirs from cute jewellery, enamel pins, postcards, to larger framed tile sets that would look great as a statement piece in the house. each visiting time slot is about an hour which is more than enough time to explore the place. at the end of each session the staff will give a short talk about the history which is also quite fascinating

A true hidden gem in the area around Chiayi. It’s small, yes, but still very beautiful. Lots of different tiles and old furniture, often combined together. Also located in a historical renovated house. Definitely worth the visit! The purchased 100twd ticket provides 50twd discount when purchasing something from their small souvenir selection.
Vladislav K — Google review
Beautiful museum. I was worred it wouldn't be worth it due to its size. Yet my mother always taught me to not judge a book by it's cover. Happy I went. Totally worth it. Hundreds of hand painted tile salvaged from buildings across Taiwan. 100 year old Furniture with tiles and there was even an traditional tea lounge and beautifully tiled bathroom. There is a gift shop containing tiles, coasters, jewelry, cleaning rags, gold ruler, amongst other things. A bonus is that you receive a NTD 50 discount on your gift store purchase with your entry ticket. It's not a long visit unless you want to stare at the tiles for an extended period of time. There is lots of literature related to the tiles yet none of it is in English. So hard to read without a translator or sorts.
Brett L — Google review
The name says it all. Lovely tile museum. Tips for an enjoyable experience: - guests are welcomed with a guided tour lasting approx 15-20 mins. Languages include at least, English, Chinese and Japanese. - during the afternoon, note the tours are conducted at thirty minutes past each hour, so plan your arrival otherwise you may be waiting outside for a while - upon entry, guests are requested to remove their footwear with shoes placed in a cupboard, so wearing socks would be practical - after the tour, guests are welcome to explore the exhibits on several floors, so there is no rush.

Cute little shop selling Taiwan tiles inspired goods. Some items are affordable, while some are more pricey, which are understandable as they are cute novelties. Friendly & polite staff. Has an Instagrammable corner. The museum part was closed when we visited though.

I love this museum. The organization has rescued many tiles from traditional.himes that were being demolished. The tiles were handmade made in Japan or the US from 1915-1935. They're gorgeous and special. The museum is in an old charming house. It's wonderful. And perfect for social media. The gift shop has great souvenirs. The ticket is $100 per person but you can get a $50 discount at the gift shop. You do need to take off your shoes to enter.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Song of the Forest is a unique outdoor installation in Chiayi City, celebrating the area's lumber industry. The egg-shaped dome made of local timber and designed by artist Wang Wen-Chih represents the prosperity of the region. Visitors can enter through a rattan-covered archway symbolizing the railway to Alishan Mountain Range. The structure, resembling a landmark from Bikini Bottom, offers an interesting architectural experience and beautiful patterns for photography.
The Song of the Forest is a hidden gem in Chiayi City, offering a peaceful and less crowded experience for visitors. When we visited, we were the only ones there, which gave us the perfect opportunity to take photos without having to compete for a spot. We stopped by this tranquil site on our way to Hinoki Village. While taxis are readily available for a quick and easy ride, we chose to walk and explore the streets of Chiayi City. The weather was ideal for a leisurely stroll, and the landmark is only 1.3 kilometers from the main station, making it an enjoyable walk. The structure is designed to reflect the famous sacred tree of the Alishan Forest, the tunnel, and the Alishan railway. The design is fascinating, with attention to detail. Apart from the well-crafted structure, one thing that is noticeable here is serenity. Although it is sutuated in the middle of the city, the area remains peaceful and quite. While you can still hear the sound of cars, it is not bothersome. There isn’t much to do here, so visiting won’t take up too much of your time. It’s a great side trip on your way to the more famous Hinoki Village.

One of the Chiayi tourist attractions. Interesting designed architecture. It was beautiful and poetic as the name suggests.

Came here on a rainy day and it was completely empty. On first glance, looked like a place in Bikini Bottom but the architecture was really interesting! The inner area of the building is not shaded but there are some really nice patterns you can take photos of.
Xiang H — Google review
It's a unique sculpture for sure, but it's surrounded by construction and a parking lot that isn't connected. It was a super hot day so no one else wanted to leave the shade and do the very short walk into the sculpture. It's a nice place if you are staying nearby but I wouldn't make a special trip just to see it unless you are interested in such architectural structures.

A very unique architecture set in a spacious field. All peaceful and quiet, hang around just to enjoy the peace and serenity of the place, a place for photography. Alishan Forest Railway Chiayi Station is a starting point for exploring the stunning natural beauty of Alishan. The Eryan Ping Trail offers breathtaking views of tea fields, sea of clouds, and sunset, providing a serene atmosphere for a leisurely 800-meter walk that takes about 50 minutes. While Chiayi may not be the first destination in Taiwan, it boasts numerous attractions and serves as a convenient transportation hub with free shuttle buses to the TRA station.
A very good and big station, my childhood station, unfortunately time is running out for this station as the Chiayi urban railway evaluation project is taking place.

It's popularity use for Alishan forest railway stations. The station was small but had a mini mart in it. I booked the tickets online and stayed at the hotel nearby within 3 minutes walk. The restrooms were clean. The staff was helpful. It's a bit long walk to waiting area for the train. The waiting seats were limited. I use this station twice go to Alishan and back from Alishan. Not bad! There were standing peoples along the way. I guessed, it was fully book and people were willing to stand up the whole time which I considered it was hard.

Small station. Waiting area is very limited as are the food choices. Obviously, if you need to come to Chiayi, you can't exactly choose your station, but this does not make it onto my list of desirable places to wait out a train.
魯大海 — Google review
It's a large station with many shops in front. It's close to the night market and shopping areas. If anyone wants to travel to Alishan, you can catch the bus right in front. It's a notable spot, the place with the long queues.

Renovation ongoing Walkable to halal food nearby Point for shuttle bus to HSR Chiayi, Alishan by bus & train Left luggage very affordable

Very quaint and old, LOL. Compared to the High Speed Rail stations, this one is so antique and traditional. Loved the experience anyway. They still had elevators and stuff so we could still navigate with our luggages. Just out the front are tons of taxis, and we literally walked across to our hotel. Be aware that the trains might be slowwwwww.
Julien — Google review
This is NOT the HSR station, but there is a free shuttle bus to HSR. If you are at the front of the station, you need to collect a slip of paper at the gates that will allow you to cross to the back of the station. There are signs posted, or simply ask the staff. The back of the train station is where the bus boarding area is. At the back of the station, go to boarding Gate 1, the bus should come on berth 2. Tell the driver if you are going to HSR station, and he will give you a free ticket.

It works well. The staff were very helpful. They helped us English speakers buy tickets for the following day to Tainan.

Night market

Chiayi City East Public Retail Market

Traditional market
Fresh food market
Located in Chiayi, 嘉義市東公有零售市場 is one of the city's oldest traditional markets, dating back to the Japanese period. It serves as a communal kitchen for locals and offers a wide variety of traditional dishes such as meat rolls and dumplings. The market also features food stalls selling unique Taiwanese dishes not commonly found elsewhere in Taiwan.
We tried the famous Taiwan meatloaf. Watch our experience on our Youtube channel, @40NorthTravels. Video title, "Legendary Grandpa's Taiwan Meatloaf 🇹🇼" Watch as the family crafts this delicious local favorite and experience the heart of Taiwan’s food culture. Local Grandpa explains the process of making it, and invites us to sample this popular meal. The overall market was really good, but the meatloaf is the star, for sure!
Jason B — Google review
The traditional market sells meat, fish, vegetable, pickles, and other food groceries, but the market is unique because it has a few food stalls which sell beef organs, pork-based soups, vegetable springs, cookies and desserts, and other traditional Taiwanese dishes which are not seen frequently in other parts of Taiwan. Most of the food stalls generally open at 06AM and end at 02PM daily when market is open. The market is extremely busy and crowded, and customers have to be careful about the motorcycles because they are allowed to enter the market and they do not always observe the traffic law.
Ben H — Google review
To truly understand a city, traditional markets are always the best place to approach the goal. For me, here gathers the most tasty food in Chiayi. Do try the beef soup and meat roll, you won't regret it.

Full of goodies, but beware of armies of scooters and avoid on a raining day. Also, remember to bring your own shopping bag.
Drlogan D — Google review
Crazy busy traditional Market with literally everything. It's pretty cool to see all sorts of seafood, meat, veggies, clothes, and even desserts. They have a food centre somewhere in the middle too a bit crazy with scooters everywhere though so be careful!
D D — Google review
Most of the food stands sell out at around 1:30pm, sigh
ABCD E — Google review
A huge traditional market that offers everything you expect to find in a market at affordable prices. Food stalls here are great but you need to come early to line up. 5 start. You can also see just about every brand and model of scooters here. This riders are energetic as they try to squeeze between pedestrians just so they can be stuck infront of you. They can also test their skills to see how many elbows they'll hit with rear-view mirrors. This is also the perfect place to train to be unapologetic as they came just ride away without apologizing to the pedestrians. I just realized I've wow more about the scooters than the market itself, but the number of scooters sure made the walk very uncomfortable. Negative stars if possible.

Democracy Turkey Rice

Mentioned on

Chicken restaurant
Restaurant
Democracy Turkey Rice is a popular eatery in Chiayi, known for its bustling atmosphere and delicious turkey rice dishes. Despite the compact quarters, the restaurant attracts long queues of eager diners. The turkey drumstick rice is a standout dish, featuring tender meat and flavorful toppings like pidan, braised egg, and tofu. The authentic chicken rice is also highly recommended, with reasonable prices and quick service. While the turkey flavor is praised for its excellence, some find the dish slightly salty.
"This establishment experiences rapid customer influx upon opening at 10:00am. The dining area offers a comfortable and clean environment. Guests self-complete order forms prior to counter service. The food is flavorful with appropriate portion sizes. Notably, the chicken rice presents a less salty profile compared to other vendors, a characteristic further enhanced by the inclusion of fried shallots and yellow pickles. The vegetable stew and tofu-century egg are highly recommended. Preparation times are efficient. While satisfactory, the egg in my dish would have been preferred prepared over easy. The total cost of NTD 135 represents good value. recommended
TEO H — Google review
The Turkey rice was fragrant, with plenty of options for other braised delights. We got the intestine, pigs ear and turkey wing and they were all braised well. They also had some ginger on the side to pair it. The soup was nice especially on a cold night. Overall a great meal!
Hui S — Google review
You go to this place for the food, not the atmosphere. The line is long & intimidating, but it moves quickly. This is by far the best Turkey Rice I have had, in the place famous for Turkey Rice. The cold bamboo shoot salad and oysters are also excellent. This is a must-eat when you are in or near Chiayi. Highly recommended.
Matt P — Google review
Excellent food! Taiwanese food can be a bit hit and miss, this was definitely a hit. Flavourful rice with sauce going all the way to the bottom of the bowl, great with a fried egg, both of which contrast really well with the salad full of fresh/blanched veggies (nice change from every veggie being cooked to death) and dressing. Highly recommend. For non Chinese speakers, the process is order on the paper checklists outside, tell them how many people you are and then they'll yell a number at you, which is the number of your table. Then sit and enjoy your food.
Lee W — Google review
This restaurant is worth you traveling to Chiayi for! I never knew turkey could be so flavorful! The rice is cooked in the turkey bone broth and the bowl is topped with crispy scallions and a pickled veggie. Be sure to get the turkey leg rice and the spinach is a perfect addition. The bone broth soup, soft tofu, and braised pig skin are also not to be missed.

The chicken rice is authentic and the price is really reasonable. Tried several other items other than the chicken rice and they all tasted great. They have their own parking area, but not a lot of parking spaces (although still incredibly helpful). The service was very quick and the seatings are comfortable. They have indoor seatings with air conditioning (which is very good especially during warmer days).

Stepped into a lively spot in Chiayi for lunch and it didn’t disappoint! The turkey rice was a standout - juicy meat on top of fluffy rice, with a tangy pickle slice for a little zing. The atmosphere was buzzing with locals, a sure sign of a great find. Also enjoyed some tasty sides, all for NTD 650. This place is a win for a hearty meal without breaking the bank. Solid 5 stars!

SMARTFISH

Taiwanese restaurant
SMARTFISH is a popular and lively restaurant known for its famous dish, fish head stew with tofu and vegetables. The eatery has been serving this iconic Chiayi specialty since 1953, using chub fish from a local reservoir that are deep-fried to perfection. Collaborating closely with various individuals and organizations, SMARTFISH continues to uncover the secrets of Chiayi and shares the pride of the local community.
Lin Congming's casserole fish head is a highly recommended culinary experience in Chiayi. My recent visit confirmed its reputation for exceptional flavor and quality. Despite a significant queue, the efficient table turnover and patient, attentive staff contributed positively to the dining experience. The signature casserole fish head was notably aromatic upon arrival. The rich broth exhibited a delightful hint of wok hei, presenting a complex layering of flavors that remained palatable without any greasy aftertaste, even after finishing the entire serving. The fish head itself was expertly prepared, featuring a crispy skin and tender, moist flesh, completely devoid of any fishy odor. The generous inclusion of ingredients such as napa cabbage, tofu, and fried tofu skin absorbed the flavorful broth beautifully. For those who appreciate spice, the accompanying chili sauce is a must-try, adding a fragrant and significant kick. Overall, the meal was thoroughly satisfying, with a generous portion size easily shared by two people (individual portions are also available). The three-colored egg dish was a delightful surprise, pairing wonderfully with the homemade mayonnaise. The specialty IPA (NTD 130) was also superb. It's clear why this established restaurant enjoys such consistent popularity; it is truly a capable culinary institution. I wholeheartedly give it a five-star rating and intend to return on my next visit to Chiayi. This dish is sincerely recommended to those who appreciate a robust and flavorful broth. Please note that all fish dishes contain bones."

Visited on a Friday evening following Netflix features Taiwanese food 😃. Reaching around 7:10 PM and awwww mountain people mountain sea, loooong queue. Throughout the wait, they kept announcing that dishes were finished every few minutes and that was stressful. I decided to order takeaway instead, cut short waiting time before all dishes gone!! I tried the fish stew, which tasted like curry vegetables but wasn't quite that. It wasn't bad overall. The turkey rice had a nice, chicken-like flavor and was quite enjoyable. The Lurofan was also not bad and worth trying. Overall all were decent, and while the service was a bit hectic, the dishes were worth a try. Good experience trip!

Heard about this institution through the Street Food series on Netflix. I love me some fish heads so I decided to drop by Chiayi and brave the line for what I expected to be an exciting meal. I got the casserole with fish, pig heart, and some huge cuts of asparagus. My expectations were already high and the meal that was given to me still managed to exceed them. The crunchiness of the beautifully cooked fish is going to haunt me forever. The soup is the very definition of comfort food. I inhaled the slivers of pig heart as well as the asparagus. I nearly teared up at the end of my meal. It was that good. Thank you Smartfish for making my visit to Chiayi memorable. 🙏🏻

Tried Smart Fish on a weekday — still had to queue. The famous fish wasn’t that impressive, and the soup tasted quite plain, not light or flavorful. Some veggie dishes were already sold out. But the rice with pork was tasty! Overall, it was just an average experience.

Love the place! Well worth the queue and the queue moved quickly. The fish broth was very rich and flavourful. Be sure to try the turkey rice too! There is a stall opposite which sells winter melon tea

I came here after seeing this place featured in the Netflix documentary. The place has really modernised since the documentary and has a really smooth functioning system. Take a number and wait for a seat, it doesn’t take too long. While waiting you tick off what you want on the menu card and when your number pops up you hand your order and make payment. Food comes really quickly. I got the fish soup with fish meat (not the famous fish head version). The soup was thick and full of ingredients and had a delicious flavourful broth. Definitely recommend as a sit down alternative to the night market.
Jade J — Google review
Well worth the walk and wait for this. Take a number when you get there. Grab the order list and wait for the number to be called. Queue moves fast. Service was fast and efficient - order and pay. They will assign you a seat number and 5min later, it will be served. Take some photos and enjoy your meal.

Sweet and totally don’t taste the fish in the broth at all , feels more like shrimp pork soup instead . I don’t understand going so hard into the sweetness as if eating a dessert . Turkey rice is good . Fish soup is special but I don’t enjoy it at all . Maybe I am more used to Teochew fish head steamboat that beat this in taste and depth by miles

Chiayi-Huang Cold Noodles

Noodle shop
Nestled in a cozy corner, Chiayi-Huang Cold Noodles is a charming eatery that specializes in refreshing cold noodles, perfect for those warm summer days. The restaurant boasts a clean and inviting atmosphere with its bright white tiles and light wood accents. While the cold noodles may not be groundbreaking compared to other regional dishes like Shanxi Liang Pi, they still offer a satisfying experience.
We recently tried the Chiayi Huang Cold Noodle during our trip to Taiwan, and it was simply incredible! At first glance, it may seem like a simple dish with just cold noodles, sesame sauce, and garlic paste, but don't be deceived by its plain appearance. The flavors are absolutely heavenly – truly one of the best cold noodles I've ever eaten! The noodles were bouncy and perfectly "Q" in texture, while the sesame sauce is their secret weapon, with a well-balanced sweetness. The garlic paste adds an extra punch, making the whole dish unforgettable. They also offer some delicious desserts, which are perfect to enjoy after your meal. I highly recommend this cold noodle restaurant to anyone visiting Chiayi – you won’t be disappointed!

Super yummy cold noodles! The sauces were amazing. We also got soft boiled eggs on the side, and tried a century egg and tofu. They have an English menu and were helpful when ordering. Service was wonderful, and they even provide free tea. A definite must try for people coming to visit!
Beth P — Google review
It was my first time to try Chiayi cold noodles. Wide and flat noodles were different from Taipei. The sauce contained sesame, garlic and white vinegar. Actually I like it! It was special and refreshing for me. Cold meatballs were a little wired. I still preferred hot meatballs. The popular restaurant was still pretty crowded at weekends afternoon. I thought the environment was too tiny. Need to queue for very looooooooong time. So I decided to takeaway finally.
Kate S — Google review
Lovely plate of 凉面 which tasted superior to many other versions we had tried. I think the generous serving of minced garlic sauce made the difference. The sesame sauce itself was also refreshing and not cloying, paired with a good texture from the noodles. We also enjoyed the 凉圆 which looked very foreign to us but tasted quite familiar (the skin reminded us of soon kueh in Singapore). Was also delicious especially with the sauces drenched on it.
Vivian L — Google review
Ordered the cold sesame noodles and the meat ball. Both used the same gravy which is sesame, garlic and I think mayo. But the mayo was very mild and it had a slight sweetness. The overall combo is pretty good but it gets boring easily as there is just noodles, cucumber and the gravy. For the meat ball, it's an interesting texture since the exterior is a jelly texture with some peppery meat on the inside. Personally I would prefer a thinner skin and more meat as some parts was mostly skin. I think it is an interesting dish to try for those visiting. Seems to be popular among locals too.
Annabethia — Google review
The cold noodle is not something out of the world, if you have tried Shanxi Liang Pi, the later has better taste profile. However the cold meat ball is very nice to eat during the warm summer. The dessert was great too, not too sweet and has good mix of ingredients inside. The shortcoming is the limited number of seats available. The shop is small and half the space is taken up by the operation, I tends to think that they could further optimise the operation space to add more space for diners.
Bryan L — Google review
Cold noodle with mayonnaise, it is really I retesting taste, I guess is one the traditional cold noodle in JiaYi, is good to try it out, price are fair, ice dessert is a must order thing. Overall you need to wait around 30 minutes, do need a bit patience.

The delicious and juicy burgers are served in a beautiful old building that exudes calmness, making it an ideal spot to hang out with friends.
We were really impressed by their freshly baked homemade burger buns and their use of locally sourced ingredients. From the unique old prune ketchup made in Kaohsiung to the sweet pineapple grown in Yunlin, every detail reflects their commitment to supporting local farmers. Even the lettuce, tomatoes, and both vegan and non-vegan meats are all sourced within Taiwan rather than imported, which makes the meal feel even more thoughtful and authentic. Was really impressed with meal and the place's atmosphere. My wife and I have been loving the local cuisine throughout our trip, but it was amazing to find such an awesome burger joint with a nice relaxing beer after all our wanderlust. Great burger selections with some vegetarian options and the American pale ale 🍺 was also great after a long day of exploring the region. A real gem and that is saying something considering how much we both love all this amazing Taiwanese food. Would highly recommend 👌

This is the second time I tried this buger joint. I can't say it reminds me of any burgers I have had in the US. Maybe it's more of a burger with the Asian or Taiwanese influence. The added egg is a nice touch, but the grass fed beef has that special aroma that I don't like as much. ( It's a personal taste). And the buns are a bit more on chewy side than my liking. Overall, it's probably the closest thing you will find excluding MacDonald's in chiayi.

Because the cold noodles at Banyan Tree Blended Ice were sold out, but I really wanted to eat cold noodles, so I passed by this shop. A small portion of cold noodles was NT$40. The noodles were thick and coarse like plain noodles, which I personally didn't like. The sesame peanut sauce looked very ordinary, like the ones sold in convenience stores. It didn't feel like it was made by myself, nor was it the white sauce like the one at Chiayi cold noodles. The side dishes included bean sprouts and cucumbers. It tasted ordinary, not really to my taste. Quiet little airport for internal flights.

Small AP that currently only serves Taipei, Lanyu and Green Island. Public ground transportation is virtually non-existent, but there are some scooter rental nearby. Facilities are very ordinary, toilet, some stores, nothing extraordinary.
György A — Google review
A small and somewhat old airport in a picturesque location against the mountains. There are some nice indigenous touches in the airport like with wooden statues and chairs. It’s also nice that they include indigenous languages in some of the signage. The ticket agents for Mandarin Airlines were not friendly. The security stopped me and asked to see things from my bag, although this did not happen to any of the Taiwanese passengers. Perhaps most importantly, there are very few functioning bathrooms in the entire airport. There were 3 that were closed.

Small regional airport with flights to Taipei and the regional islands. Checkin opens roughly 1.5 hours before the flight. You can go through security 45 minutes before your flight.
Larkin C — Google review
Good clean airport with phone chargers and strong free wifi with no time limit. Also, there is a coffee shop, water filter and clean toilets.

A great small airport. Yes, you'll need to walk out on the tarmac but it's a small airport. It has local art and indigenous products and is easy to get through. People are friendly and signs are easy to follow.

Chiayi Airport

Domestic airport
Airport
Chiayi Airport (CYI) is the closest airport to Chiayi, offering domestic flights from Taipei and Kaohsiung. Upon arrival, travelers can easily access their destination in Chiayi by taxi or bus. The airport is known for its friendly staff and a range of free services at the help desk, including umbrellas, weather updates, and transportation arrangements. Despite being small and compact, the airport is well-maintained and provides a pleasant experience for visitors.
A great experience every time. From the parking lot attendant (extremely welcoming and friendly, opened the gate for me immediately and the cost is only NT20 per day for scooters or NT100 per day for cars. The Uni Air staff was extraordinarily friendly, accommodating, informative, and helpful with every request. There's a help desk which offers a staggering number of free services (free umbrellas if needed, weather and fight updates, arrangements for transportation, etc.). The security checkpoint is handled in a very professional manner, and very efficiently. The safety and security is outstanding, with triple checks of identity and boarding passes. Uni Air offers an APP which allows you to book and pay very conveniently online. As we took the bus to the plane, a man in a wheelchair was brought on. They really took great care of him. Accessibility is excellent.

Tainan Airport (TNN)

Domestic airport
International airport
Regional airport
Tainan Airport, also known as Tainan Jichang, is the city's airport despite its limited flight options. While it currently doesn't offer international flights and has few domestic ones, it's a clean and friendly place. The airport was previously a military compound with F-16s taking off from there. Opposite the airport is a food factory that offers tours for a small fee, including pineapple cakes and interactive experiences to learn about their production process.
Quiet, mostly empty airport with two gates. I usually arrive hours early before all my flights, but there's really no need here. Not much to do or see or buy, but it's not the airport's fault, so I don't see a reason to rate it down. The staff at Uni Air was helpful and spoke great English. There were multiple people cleaning and spraying down the seating areas thoroughly, so that was really reassuring. Across the street is the Chimei Happiness Factory if you have no choice but to come early. I didn't go. Just hung out in the waiting area with a lot of comfortable/colorful seating.
Paprika T — Google review
Easily accessible and I feel the airport is not overly crowded compared to some that I have been to. My last trip from here was a while ago but it was nice back then!
John W — Google review
renovated TNN airport now with international connections to HKG, SGN, KIX... hope more to come because it’s really a great facility for travelers to discover Tainan - Taiwan’s ancient capital rich in history, legacy and cultural mix.

This is a tiny airport with only one small building. It doesn't have a true gate. It's really just a door to buses that will take you to the plane. It's extremely clean, and incredibly easy to get through. You can see the back door (the gate) from the front door. As small as it is, it does have everything you need for food and cash. Someone would even sell you a tourism sim. Now it would have been perfect if I wasn't double scammed here. Someone put up a sign for chunghwa telecom in the center kiosk to sell tourism sim. I bought a 5 day sim thinking I'll have 5 days of unlimited data on chunghwa telecom network, except the sim wasn't even chunghwa telecom. It turned out to be something called Taiwan Star?!?! I wouldn't have found out if the network didn't refuse connection after 3.5 days. I did not even have internet to check into my return flight!! Luckily I did get a message about my delayed flight from the airline before it completely cut out. So I got a bait and switch card that only worked half way through. This is just sad.

Made many landings and takeoffs on this runway back in the early 1970's when the airport was a military compound. As many reviewers have stated, it is very clean and the Taiwanese are friendly folks.

So friendly ground staffs. While our plane was leaving for taxing, the ground staffs were waving their hands and smiling to say good bye! I really love Taiwan, Tawainese, especially their great mentality.

Penghu Airport (MZG)

Domestic airport
Airport
Penghu Airport, also known as Magong Airport, is a convenient and welcoming transportation hub in Penghu County, Taiwan. Travelers can reach the airport by plane or ferry to Magong Harbor and then transfer to various bus lines from the nearby Magong Bus Station. The airport boasts clean and well-maintained facilities with efficient baggage handling and minimal delays for arrivals and departures.
Penghu Airport is the only airport on the island. It's really small and has no much food inside other than a 7-11 outside and a restaurant agree the immigration counter. There's a car rental and information counter about penghu island. Friendly staff and easy to understand brochure. All duty free item have to be collected at the airport after going through immigration.

A small, quiet, calm airport. Easy check-in & quick security clearance. Several Duty free shops but only one food outlet at boarding area.
Vincent O — Google review
Small but convenient airport. Not too many places to eat within the area and the only cafe in the airport is located within the boarding gates. There is a 7-11 near the exit though.
Aerolle M — Google review
Car rental service, convenient store and a cafe at ground floor on the side of flight counters. Boarding and Duty free shops at 2nd floor.
Birdie C — Google review
A rigional airport serves air transportations for local residents and tourists between Penghu and Taiwan by two major domestic airplanes, UNI and Mandarin. The airport's facilities are good and clean compared to other regional airports.
Hsiaoming ( — Google review
Magong Airport is the main airport of Penghu, with flights coming in from Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. The airport is small and is connected to the airbase, but it has complete facilities. There is a first aid station, information station, car rental, money exchange, airline counters and a convenience store in the first floor pre-boarding area. The convenience store is the only place to grab a bite as there are no nearby restaurants, while the café and food stalls are all in the boarding area at the 2nd floor of the building.

Helpful and warm-hearted information qna counter lady. Even helo me Google to the hotel i stay and suggest the which bus station off.
Jinx — Google review
Great facilities. A beautiful airport in many ways. The arrivals and departures are seldom delayed. The baggage is delivered incredibly fast. Competent staff are on site for assistance. There is ample ways to link to the rest of the county, such as by taxi, bus, car rental at the airport, and even scooter rental a five minute walk away. This year 2019, free gifts are available if you are a tourist (until March or April). A very generous offer!

Taichung International Airport

International airport
Transportation
Taichung International Airport is located in a city with a population of 2.8 million, making it the third largest in Taiwan. To reach the airport from Taoyuan International Airport, passengers can take a shuttle bus to THSR Taoyuan Station, then transfer to THSR Taichung Station and finally take Nantou Bus to Qingjing Farm. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and costs around NT$262 per person.
⭐⭐⭐I have taken a flight to Kinmen once before. The airport in Taichung has domestic and international flights✈️✈️✈️. Most of them take international flights to the outer islands of Taiwan and the international terminal. The airport lobby is clean and bright, and you can feel the care taken by the airport staff in maintaining it. To get to the bus station or take a taxi, you need to walk to the parking lot outside the terminal. The currency exchange bank, ambulance station and other facilities next to the lobby are quite complete. There are restaurants and convenience stores inside such as Laerfu, so there are not many choices for the whole family. 🏝️🏝️🏝️ At present, the routes of Taichung Airport are gradually expanding, and the ticket counters of international airlines have even been moved to the side of domestic flights. More routes and flights should be added in the future. However, the current external transportation at the airport is not convenient. In addition to driving, picking up and dropping off, and taking taxis, the only public transportation is buses, and it is far from the city. It may not improve until the MRT is opened in the future.
K E — Google review
Small and nothing special. Transport going to the hotels and other places is kind of unpredictable and inconvenient. I wish there will be improvements on my next visit.
Sir G — Google review
This was my first visit to Taichung International Airport. It wasn’t a huge airport like Taoyuan but it was bright, clean, functional as well as spacious. There were lots of seats for waiting passengers. Counters were near and information boards were always updated with flight details promptly. There were 2 atriums, one for Domestic flights and the other for International flights. We were taking Uniair to Kinmen and counters were very neat. Counter staff were also very polite and experienced. Washrooms were spotless, spacious.
Tiffy K — Google review
It is a convenient and compact airport with free wifi . There is only one restaurant/café once you go through customs and a few duty free shops. There's also a play area for kids and a few nice spots to sit down while waiting for boarding.
E K — Google review
Too many luxurious duty free in the transit zone and too few eateries, no convenience store. However, there are plenty of AC and USB sockets for charging, nice WiFi, functional restrooms. And most importantly, it's clean.
György A — Google review
Nice new international terminal, the domestic one is very dated, but has more food options. Small size and efficient staff means it's easy to use, and for Taichung residents the convenience is worth it. Also a viable option for foreign tourists if there are cheaper flights into Taichung, with airlines like Tigerair, T'Way and VietJet starting RMQ flights this year. There are new airport express buses running through the city (King Bus 國光客運 A1, A, A3, 100NTD) as well as the cheaper 302 from Taichung Train Station down the express lane on Taiwan Blvd. The international departures area has good duty free shopping, rest areas, and play areas and library for kids. But there is only one restaurant. The food is good but would have expected much more.
Brodie H — Google review
Nice airport, not too crowded. It is very convenient to travel from 台灣大道 by the 302 bus.
Ekkachai K — Google review
I arrived here on Feb 20, 2017 and departed here on Feb 24, 2017. I paid the cheapest fare from Hong Kong to Taiwan if I landed here. Although the airport looks nice, there is no rail link and public buses to city centre or railway stations run infrequently!
