Nestled just 3 km north of Rocky Harbour, the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse is a charming destination that beautifully marries history with nature. This 19th-century lighthouse serves as a museum and visitor center, offering engaging exhibits and guided walks that delve into the coastal life of western Newfoundland. Families will delight in the kid-friendly activities available, from rug hooking to learning about nautical flags.
the rangers were knowledgeable and super friendly. they spoke English and French and shared lots of information. The space inside the little museum is welcoming and has many educational display panels and also hands on activities. o e cannot climb up to the top, the lighthouse is still functional and under coast guard care. the walking paths around the lighthouse are small but beautiful. the parking lot is not very big. near the parking lot are restrooms away from the light house
Irina K — Google review
Well worth pulling off the road to enjoy this lighthouse and the trails and views around the hillside. It’s a very photogenic lighthouse that you can capture from many different angles and perspectives. I totally enjoyed it. I did not tour the interior though it was open and available.
Randy R — Google review
A very scenic location and lighthouse perched on side of cliff. Very nice museum to learn history of lighthouse. Very short walk from parking lot. Best views of lighthouse is on left side where there are several little trails to walk out near the water.
John M — Google review
The guides are super excited and helpful. The lighthouse is still functional and therefore, restricted to the public. The inside is filled with history about the previous guards and the lighthouse's history. The trails around the lighthouse are well marked, short and easy to do.
Shrey A — Google review
What a nice little historical lighthouse. There is a little museum inside and scenic views all around. There are also a few hiking trails that take you to the rocky edge overlooking the water and down to a rocky cove.
Ethan — Google review
Beautiful views of the coast. Lots of trails to explore that lead to unique lookouts. You can climb the rocks and stand right beside the lighthouse. It was really cool to check out after our boat tour through Western Brook Pond!
Joey S — Google review
Lovely trails around the lighthouse! We visited after hours on a weekday, so didn’t go inside.
Arunothia M — Google review
Really enjoyed my visit. There were 2 park rangers (English and French) and had an interesting chat about the hiatory of the place. Interesting backstory. The last light keepers son (now in his 80s) still visits.

Tablelands

Mentioned on
+11 other lists
Plateau
Nature & Parks
Tablelands, located within Gros Morne National Park, offers a unique hiking experience on the exposed section of the Earth's mantle. It is known as the only place on Earth where visitors can walk on the mantle rather than the crust. The area provides various hiking options, from rocky Tablelands hikes to coastal walks and lush landscapes in Green Gardens. Additionally, visitors can enjoy stunning views from Big Lookout or Gros Morne Mountain and explore the picturesque Western Brook Pond Fjord.
The Missus and I along with our Westcoast travellers did the short 45 minute walk from the parking lot to the viewing platform. The trail is relatively flat with gravel and boardwalk surfaces. The rocks scattered from the earth's mantle and the plant life trying to survive in this harsh environment makes for scenic pictures and an educational opportunity. A must see when in Gros Morne. No luck in finding the geocache sites.
B W — Google review
The Tablelands is one of the most extraordinary landscapes we’ve ever seen — unlike anywhere else in Newfoundland, or even Canada. Walking through this otherworldly terrain felt like stepping onto another planet. The landscape is dominated by rust-coloured peridotite rock, pushed up from deep within the Earth’s mantle half a billion years ago. Because the rock is low in nutrients and high in heavy metals, very few plants grow here, giving the place a stark, barren beauty. This is what makes the Tablelands a key site for understanding plate tectonics — proof of how ancient oceans closed and mountains formed. We visited with our family and friends, including young kids, and found the area surprisingly accessible. The Tablelands Trail is well-marked and not too challenging, making it a great spot to explore with children while still being deeply fascinating for adults. Along the way, the contrasting scenery — the orange-brown rocks of the Tablelands against the lush green valleys of Gros Morne — is simply breathtaking. What made our visit even more special was learning that the Tablelands played a role in Gros Morne being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Standing there, you feel like you’re touching a piece of Earth’s inner secrets. The Tablelands is a must-see when visiting Gros Morne. It’s not just a hike — it’s a walk across the Earth’s mantle, a rare chance to experience the planet’s geological history up close. Perfect for families, photographers, and anyone curious about the story of our planet.
Thirojan J — Google review
Well worth the visit if you enjoy geology, learning about the earth's mantle ...very unusual scenery..

WHY VISIT? 1)This is the Mecca of Gros Morne National park.lf you don't see this place where earth's mantle lies bare on the crust...you haven't seen this national park. 2)A GEOLOGICAL GEM. 3)Very scenic topography 4) Excellent for photography 5) Good place to see unique vegetation IS THE TRAIL EASY? Mostly flat boardwalk.Easy for all age group. Tips: Visit between 9 am to 12 noon for the best clicks

Beautiful, interesting, and an easy walk. Can be windy.
Ashley M — Google review
Easy trail, except to go to the top of the mountains unfortunately I didn't do the difficult trail just the easy one, it took me 1h30 round-trip with magnificent photos taken as souvenirs. The landscapes, the view of the mountains are impressive wow! Also, don't forget to go to Trout River and all the beauty of nature around!
Johanne — Google review
Both the 4km return short trail and the unmarked 14km hike to the top loop trail are amazing. Choose either one based on your mobility and weather condition and you won't regret it! The view is magnificent and the experience is unique. The hike to the top trail is quite dangerous, I'd suggest to have hiking companions and pay attention to the weather. We also found GPS based hiking apps quite useful to locate us on the official unmarked trail (e.g. park Canada app or something like Strava). Be sure to visit discovery center (preferably before the hike), not only it gives a lot of information on Tablelands, it also give the difference in rock composition between other regions of gros morne which we found very informative.
Sam X — Google review
Bring plenty of water as there is no reprieve from the sun. Most of the path is groomed for easy walking, highly recommend venturing off once you hit the end of the path as recommended by their signage. Amazing colours, quite flat and easy walk even if kids/elderly/pregnant.

Western Brook Pond

Mentioned on

Pond
Nature & Parks
Nestled within Gros Morne National Park, Western Brook Pond is a stunning glacier-carved inlet surrounded by towering mountains. Visitors can access this picturesque location through hiking routes or by taking sightseeing cruises. The 16-km long freshwater lake boasts 2000-foot high cliffs that create a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. In addition to the breathtaking natural scenery, the area offers opportunities for exploring coastal lighthouses, ancient geology, and indulging in food and wine tours.
A few kilometers walk to the boat, reservations suggested. Beautiful fjords, not a true fjord as it is landlocked with fresh water, not connected to salt water any longer.
Owl D — Google review
I’ve seen and done a lot of stuff in Newfoundland, but a boat tour of the fjords at Western Brook is in the top 3. Visually stunning. Nothing quite like it. Recommend that everyone do it at least once in their life.
Lee S — Google review
We went on a windy, rainy day. Still gorgeous and the guides did a fantastic job.
Ashley M — Google review
Visiting Western Brook Pond was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our family. I went with my wife, our 1+ year-old daughter, and close family friends (with their kids aged 6 and 4). It was a day we’ll always treasure because of the breathtaking views and the joy of exploring nature together. Instead of walking the 3 km trail to the dock, we chose the shuttle service, which was very convenient and family-friendly, especially with young kids. From there, we boarded the 2-hour boat tour operated by BonTours. On our trip, we had the pleasure of meeting Jamie, Brad, and Christopher — the team onboard who made the experience exceptional. A special mention goes to Jamie, whose live commentary was superb; he explained the geology, history, and natural beauty of the fjord while patiently answering every question from curious visitors. The tour itself is absolutely mesmerizing. You float between massive billion-year-old cliffs of the Long Range Mountains, carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago. From above, waterfalls cascade nearly 2000 feet from hidden ponds on the plateau, tumbling into Gros Morne’s largest lake. The scale of the gorge is almost overwhelming — a dramatic reminder of how powerful glaciers once shaped this land. Western Brook Pond is not just a natural wonder, but also a geological treasure. Its diverse rock formations have helped scientists better understand plate tectonics, showing how ancient oceans closed and mountains were formed. It’s no surprise this area has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. For families, this is an unforgettable adventure — safe, manageable, and awe-inspiring. Our kids loved the boat ride, and the adults were completely captivated by the scenery. A must-do when visiting Newfoundland. The combination of stunning landscapes, knowledgeable guides, and the serenity of being surrounded by billion-year-old cliffs makes Western Brook Pond an experience you’ll remember forever. Highly recommended for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking to witness the true power and beauty of our planet.

Great hike. You can also get a ride for $$. Beautiful views.
Bob D — Google review
We loved this tour! I would say it shouldn’t be missed.
Joanne C — Google review
The area is beautiful and a must see. I don’t think any one doing a tour could do a bad job because the surroundings are stunning. I didn’t think the guides on the tour we did were anything special, funny or entertaining but they gave some interesting facts from their script. The queuing was a mess. We got in line early on the off chance we could sit up top. One of the guides came along about 20 minutes before boarding to tell the front of the line something and the line moved to the side. However, when it came to boarding, two lines formed and people who had been way behind us were now in front. It wouldn’t be hard for them to organise this to avoid frustration. It also wouldn’t hurt to make sure people upstairs are making room for others.
Rach P — Google review
Beautiful venue and the fjord is amazing. There is a 3 km walk in from the highway parking lot and it’s an easy walk but a bit dull and a gravel road rather than a scenic hike and be prepared for crazy wind. People line up an hour before boarding time presumably to get the top of the boat. We did not do that but did get an outside seat at the back of the boat which was fine but then be prepared to be hit by waves coming up over the floor and around your feet. The speaker system needs a sound warning just before the guide speaks so others hopefully quiet and listen. The boat Was so packed full that it was very hard to hear the guide. The information shared was great when I heard it. The wind over the water was super strong. In the fjord was lovely. The price was appropriate and the boat house does have washrooms and a bit of a shop for food and souvenirs.

The Green Gardens Trail in Gros Morne National Park offers a diverse and scenic hiking experience. Starting from the unique barren landscape of the Tablelands, the trail leads through boreal forests to the coast, where picturesque sea stacks adorn the beaches. Along the way, hikers can admire unique rock formations, observe wildlife, and enjoy stunning ocean views from various vantage points. The trail involves a steep downhill hike to reach the beach, with a challenging uphill return that is described as strenuous but rewarding.
I do this trail often! It can take 3 to 4 hours, there's a lot to explore, which usually I do. There's a walk over the tablelands, all switch backs no stairs anymore since they updated it, then a forested area, the green garden meadows, the beach and waterfalls, sea caves etc. There's usually sheep roaming around which is how green gardens got so green. Lol A great place to relax down by the ocean if anyone is interested in back country camping.
Natalia C — Google review
We came in late May. The hike is very beautiful but very long. A large portion of the hike is spent going down and then up again in a gully with no views. There were some interesting sights after you get pass the boring part, though. The coolest part of the hike is by far the herd of sheep grazing near the end of the trail. There is also a beach to relax for a bit before making the arduous journey back.
Andy Z — Google review
Great trail . Hard on knees for people who have weaker knees . It is beautiful and good trail. You got the chance to do a trail that give you the best of both worlds for mountains and sea. it a real gem to see.
Jean T — Google review
Beautiful well maintained trail. About 5km walk from the top to the sea, can be steep for some segment. Plan enough water and time for the return as in the sun it can be hard.
Renaud L — Google review
A fair bit of work to get down to the water's edge, but this is where the hike shines. Nice beach walk and views both ways down the coast.
Dave P — Google review
Amazing hike with very rewarding views at the end. They have recently redone the approach to the viewpoint so the trail is in great condition. The trail is a long descent to the ocean with beautiful views. Very rewarding views with the iconic red chairs and stairs to the beach. The incline on the return is steep and continous so make sure to save some energy for the way back.
Robert M — Google review
WOW. Steep hike downhill means a strenuous uphill return, but but so worth it. You will hike through what felt like several mini biotopes as you descend to the beach. Sit at the edge of an oceanside cliff as you contemplate your life decisions that led you to the base of this mountain (that you now have to climb back up). Take the treacherous stairs down to the beach if you dare. Possibly my favorite hike of all time. This should probably be your first hike of the day if you're not used to this level of (uphill) hiking.
Veronica W — Google review
If you do one tour in Gros Morne, this is the one. Five stars, spectacular and a fairly easy walk and hike. It is long and rocky, stunningly beautiful. Pack a lunch and enjoy at the beach.

Hiking Trails
Gros Morne Mountain Hiking Trail is a challenging but popular 10-mile loop in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. The trail takes hikers through diverse landscapes, from lowland to alpine terrain, offering colorful wildflowers and wildlife sightings along the way. The reward for this demanding hike is the breathtaking panoramic views from the summit, open from July to late November. While the trail is difficult and rocky, experienced hikers will find it a rewarding adventure.
Tough trail but worth the effort. Don't think that the work is done when you reach the summit, the decent is quite a bit longer and at least as difficult. We hiked on a semi warm (23°C) day and we needed every drop of our 3 litres of water (per person). Took about 7.5hrs total including a nice lunch break at the top. Bring good sturdy shoes/boots, start early. Not for the faint of heart.
Randy V — Google review
One of the longest and strenuous trails that I have done! The views at the summit are worth the exertion. Personally, I would recommend starting as early in the day as possible, that way you can complete the ascension without the gruelling sunlight. Do carry bug spray among other essentials. They are everywhere and relentless. The ascent was tiring, but the descent was much more painful. Overall, I loved the experience and will HIGHLY recommend it.
Shrey A — Google review
Great hike. Beautiful views but the longer you go the more there are. Lots of people. Parking lot was overflowing by noon. Suggest early arrival. Various terrain including very rocky. Big effort for inexperienced to complete. If you are older like me bring your hiking poles. Absolutely no mountain biking.
John B — Google review
Beautiful hike. Highly recommend for experienced hikers. You can do a shorter out and back section and still see the waterfall and the view of Gros morne. The entire loop is very challenging with loose rocks during the entire mountain portion. It took us almost 8 hrs to complete the entire thing with fairly limited breaks. It’s 100% worth it but I would not recommend the full loop in wet or foul weather or for those who are not comfortable on unstable footing. I get the sense that the parking fills up quickly but we had no problem at 8AM
Shannon K — Google review
Although the summit ealk is closed, you can walk upto the waterfall and to the base of the mountain. About 45mins. The foliage is still largely dormant (or dead)?
Mila T — Google review
Do not underestimate the mountain! The entire trail to the summit is steep, long and rocky, requiring hikers to be tenacious and good at planning. A pair of hiking poles is a must-have to help your knees. We packed a little too much for food, clothes, and a camera on our backs. It took us 9 hours to finish the entire trail (we ate and rested for about an hour at the summit). Looking back, it's all worth it for the variety of views we encountered. It's like the world in Zelda!
Ty Y — Google review
If you are doing the summit trail arrive early (7:30-8:30am). You want to avoid the heat and parking fills up later in the day. It is recommended to bring 3L of water per person. We only brought 1L per person and ran out of water at the last 2km back. It was fine. I could have used more water but we didn’t have enough room to carry more. We survived but if I did it again I would say at least bring 2L. The scramble up the mountain is beyond intense. If you have a heavy backpack be prepared it will make the hike harder. Well worth the views.
Sarah P — Google review
A difficult hike, not recommended to beginners, reward with a breathtaking view at the summit. The first part of the trail is an easy 4-5km to reach the base of the main ascension, about 1-1.5h. The second part can be a challenging 8km hike. It starts with a steep 500m climb in the first 1.5km. You will need good hiking boots and plainly of water as the climb is on uneven, moving rock and in the sun if it's a sunny day. After the ascension you will walk at the top and it could be windy and cool so it's a good idea to bring a rain jacket to block the wind. The return can be long and taxing on your knees, but the view continues to be worth it. Bring at least 2-3l of water per person and more on sunny day. Plan between 6 and 8h for both hikes, depending on the weather and your knees.

We camped at Shallow Bay, which was lovely. Beautiful sand beach. Just south of Shallow Bay, there is Cow Head which juts out to the west. There is an absolutely beautiful hike on Cow Head called the lighthouse Trail. Highly recommended. Whoever manages the upkeep of the trail does a great job, they are in excellent condition with good signage and beautiful views.

What a beautiful clean beach! Lovely white sand stretches around the cove and the water was comfortable enough to swim in. Although I only had time to safe. It's worth a stop. They are renovating the building on site but one bathroom is open.

Shallow Bay Beach has long shoreline and it was once considered as Old Mail road. Hiking trail of 3.2 mile loop starts at Shallow bay. This beach was beautiful and there were lot of colourful stones and few sea shells, sea/beach glasses as well. There were Washroom facilities including changing rooms. Shower was there but it was out doors.

BonTour works with the Marine Station and offers a boat tour which including a guided tour of the Marine Station. We purchased tickets on line through BonTour. From the moment we boarded, Bridgette and Simone made us feel welcome with their warm, positive energy and enthusiasm for the marine environment. Their knowledge of the local aquatic species was truly impressive. We learned so much about the marine life in the area. They were engaging, professional, and made the whole tour both educational and fun. It’s clear they’re passionate about what they do, and their excitement was contagious. The station may be small but this package packs a punch for the cost. Great memory maker!

They had 2 blue lobsters and a 96 year old (estimated) lobster plus lots of other aquatic life. Staff were very informative.

We came for a visit at the end of June. We had the a very positive experience. The timing must have been just right, because we had about three students showing us around the place and telling us all about their facility and their marine animals. The ladies were very knowledgeable and supper friendly. We got to hold some star fish and crabs. Also pretty cool they put all their animals back into the ocean at the end of the season. If you are in the area I would highly recommend.
Alex K — Google review
Neat place to see with lots of cool touch tanks, jelly fish, lobster etc. Some other interesting displays too.

Had a great experience here. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Lots of really cool marine animals to see and they're all released back into the wild after the season ends.

This Marine Station has a lot of potential to draw a lot of tourist back for a 2nd visit. It has some amazing eye catching sea creatures what most people will never get to see elsewhere. The staff really need to get more training to provide the full potential of what this Marine Station can really be. The staff wasn't very engaged with their visitors which was kind of a disappointment to most of those whole made the long drip to learn more about our ocean life.

Nestled in a charming yellow house, Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery is a beloved dining spot in Newfoundland, particularly popular among visitors to Gros Morne National Park. The restaurant boasts a cozy and inviting atmosphere, adorned with captivating local art. Its dining room is renowned for serving up hearty comfort cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients, including game meats and seafood as well as produce from its own organic garden.
We stopped here for lunch in our way north, good thing we did, the food was delicious. We ordered the seafood chowder, the mussels and a garden salad. The chowder was the best I’ve had, I would say ever, with chunky pieces of fish and seafood, perfectly seasoned. Loved it. The mussels were in a pesto sauce, very unique and tasted perfect. The only comment is that wish it came with a plain dinner roll or a piece of bread. The service is excellent, and prompt. The restaurant is so cozy, very clean and beautifully decorated.
Umesh W — Google review
Came here for dinner after hearing good things about this restaurant. I don’t know if it was an off night, but aside from the seafood chowder, I can best describe everything else as being aggressively bland tasting. Very little (or boring) flavours across the board. It was an extremely surprising dining experience. All that aside, the service was great with a comfortable dining atmosphere.
Alison — Google review
The restaurant is located at a beautiful spot and offers some amazing views. We went to this resturaunt for their dinner time which begins serving at 5 PM. Before that, they are closed and usually only accept reservations for dinner (can be done through the website). Food was good, however, super over priced for the amount that you’re getting. For example, the mussels (categorized under Starters) were $16 and the portion was HUGE. However when we got the main popular dish - “seafood bubbly bake” which when asked, we were told by the server that it was “huge” and that 2 people can definitely share it, was super small in comparison. The food is delicious and fresh, however, the portion and price did not make sense to me at all. If given the choice again, I would probably dine at a different place.

This is the best food that we’ve had in Rocky Harbour. We regret not visiting Java Jacks sooner in our visit as we’d have kept coming back for the duration of our stay. The Moose En Croute dish was incredible. The pesto mussels were fantastic and the Irish soda bread was a great extra. Service was impeccable. The young man was very attentive, accommodated us with no reservation and was helpful when we were deciding on which menu items to order. Highly recommend Java Jacks!!

I had both dinner and breakfast at this cute restaurant. I liked the atmosphere and the waitress. They had a few vegan options which can be difficult to find in such a small village.

Note: While we ate here in late August, I believe it is now closed for the season. My wife and I stumbled across this restaurant after our evening plans fell through. Not sure what to expect, we entered what looked like a private home that had been converted to a cafe. When we said we were there for dinner, we were brought to the second floor, where various couples / groups of friends were seated at different tables. After ordering, we ate some of the best food I have had in years. The tomato basil soup was delicious, the mussels in pesto sauce that my wife got were fantastic, my lobster sandwich and salad were crazy good, while the dessert we ordered was also wonderful. To make a great situation even better, our server was excellent, friendly, and fun. If I could, I would give this eatery more than five stars.

Earle's restaurant

Family restaurant
Restaurant
Earle's restaurant in Rocky Harbour is a must-visit for food enthusiasts. The moose pizza and burgers are highly recommended, with the moose meat being lean and flavorful. Despite some wait times due to limited staff, the delicious food makes it worth it. Additionally, the restaurant offers dark tickle jams and teas that make for great gifts. The friendly staff adds to the overall pleasant dining experience.
They were short-staffed the day we were there but got our food relatively quickly. First time having moose stew. It was amazingly delicious. Highly recommend.

Fish and chips were delicious. The seafood chowder had good flavour but had multiple bones/scales? or some part of the animal in the soup. I poked my mouth 3 times while eating and then just decided I didn’t want it anymore. The soft serve ice cream in a sugar cone is a must!

This place hits every time. Home cooked faves, and friendly service. For the celiac peeps, they have many variations of simple favourites and they’re so good, I was so excited to see they had gf deep fried cod! I ended up getting pan fried cod with fries and it was simply the best. Always get the scrunchions.

The portion size was generous and the price was reasonable. The staff was lovely. The washroom was clean and stocked with soap. WiFi wasn't strong but worked better near the entrance.

Seafood chowder was the best we have ever tasted! :-)) Our waitress Marsha was a sweetheart, pleasant and very efficient! My wife’s Cod platter was excellent & my Fisherman’s platter was wonderful! We loved the place! You won’t regret coming!

It was a cold wet day Friday when we stopped in for lunch. The service was excellent! The young man who served us was very friendly. We arrived early and were the only guests there. I had a BLT really good! Lots of bacon. Lemon meringue pie was delicious. Homemade desserts.

Been to Earles like 4 times this week and it is very busy but let's face it Summer is full of tourists and not a huge choice in Rocky Harbour. Food was very good in my opinion. They made the best Grilled cheese and Bacon ever! Pizza was great as was the turkey dinner we had. Just expect to wait but staff is wonderful and kind. They clearly work very hard during the tourist season. Cheers to you all.

Pizza is very cheap and big! Lots of cheese and meat. The tomato sauce was lacking flavor. Still good value overall

Fisherman's Landing Restaurant in Rocky Harbour offers a diverse menu with 6 dishes and drinks available. The service may be slow, but the staff is friendly. The Cod au Gratin, Fish Chowder, Shrimp, and Moose meat dishes are highly recommended for their delicious flavors and authentic home-style cooking. The seafood chowder, bacon-wrapped scallops, fish and chips, and homemade partridge berry pie with ice cream are also popular choices.
Such a wonderful experience dining at this restaurant! Had a window seat with a beautiful view of the sunset. The staff were lovely and the service was quick. Food was delicious! Good vegetarian and vegan options which is often difficult to find! The homemade lentil burger was phenomenal and the chilli and rice was delicious and filling.

Decent place that may not really be worth the hype. Took us 15 minutes to be seated while we stood cramped up against the door with people outside wanting to come stand in but barely any place available. Once seated, food was bland and overpriced. We had the moose burger, fish and chips, seafood linguini pasta, and chowder. The pasta was at least creamy and tasty, the fish was fresh, but other than that nothing to write home about. The servers are nice people.
Santosh G — Google review
We tried the Fish n Chips. The food was good. Batter was cooked to the perfect degree. The Cod fish was well maintained and tasty. Served with coleslaw and French fries. The tartare sauce was ready made. Chocolate Lava cake was very good though the Cheese Cake was average. The service was very good. The server was friendly and helpful. Meal was a value for money.
Senarath G — Google review
We had to wait outside for a bit because the place was super busy but the service once inside was great ai it made up for the wait. We tried the pan fried cod, pan fried salmon, the linguini pasta and the ribs and it was was well seasoned and good portions but for the price I was expecting something a bit better tasting or better looking than the what I can cook at home, regardless we all came out satisfied overall and would probably go again to try the fish and chips which were less pricey.
Lety S — Google review
I came back here numerous times because the food was amazing! Everything was delicious and so filling, I was so happy. They open up early too so I was able to get breakfast before I went hiking which I appreciated and the staff was so nice.

Sadly I think it was well over hyped the cod was chewy for a pan fried meal it is also a tad over priced . The service was ok nothin to write home About. I was really looking forward to a delicious cod but it failed to impress . Take my experience with a grain of salt and try it for your self as it seems to get mixed reviews

I wanted my wife to have some fresh delicious fish on our visit to Newfoundland and we were recommended this place by a local. It was an hour out of the way of where we were planning to go, but hey, we are on a road trip. Lets do it. We came down here and got some great pictures of the bay and its surrounding areas. So for that it was already worth it. The restaurant was quite busy. We didnt have to wait, but there was a steady stream of people pouring in with almost all tables taken around lunch time. The menu was very dated. I mean you can see years of grime built up on the edges and on the pages. The prices have been whited out and repriced with a pen countless times. I know its a fisherman's town and you have some hard working people touching it as they come in, but this is was beyond that. Im sure it doesn't cost a lot to update it a bit so that it looks... hygienic. I had a cheese burger and my wife had the fisherman's delight dinner and a serving of jiggs dinner (available on Wednesday only) which she was going to take on the road. My burger and fries were delicious. Well cooked with fresh vegetables and big serving of fries. My wife loved her dinner. Everything was prepared and seasoned well. Best food by far on the island. The price point was fair for the quality and portions. The atmosphere within the restaurant could use a bit of an update as well. Verdict: If youre looking for the best food around, we drove an hour and were not disappointed.

Nestled in the charming town of Trout River within Gros Morne National Park, the Seaside Restaurant is a popular dining spot featured in travel magazines. With a picturesque beachside location, it offers fresh and well-presented dishes. The enthusiastic owner shares the restaurant's history with diners, adding to the inviting atmosphere. While some found portion sizes slightly small, many praised the delicious seafood offerings and reasonable prices.
On a journey in the park myself and my friend took a short trip to Trout River and discovered this gem of a restaurant. My friend requested off menu items due to dietary restrictions and they were happy to make it. The owner (Jenny) and all staff were a true delight to converse with... so friendly. The food was extremely delicious. I am not a huge fish person in frequency but I had the fish chowder and fish burger and I'll tell you I wasn't disappointed at all. If you like fish you must try it. The best ever! The view and building was so cute. Make it a point to stop there for a meal when in the park and you will be glad you did.

Great people here making your visit an exceptional and memorable one. Seaside location with a view. Had seafood chowder and fresh baked bun for lunch. Good brew selection. Highly recommended.
David C — Google review
A nice seafood restaurant who’s been there for 46 years! Service was fast and efficient and the food was ok. I just found it overpriced: 36$ for the scallops signature dish: the scallops were slightly overcooked, sided with basic rice, one broccoli stem and a few carrots. Fortunately, the garlic sauce with peppers was very good! I feel like the family business running up for decades is taking advantage of the tourists’ money.

Incredible location and food! Close drive from the Tavlelands and Green Gardens trails. The fish sandwich was the best I have had in newfoundland. Love the history too! Cant wait to come back. Highly recommend.

Located in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Treasure Box is a cozy family-owned restaurant and gift shop offering traditional Newfoundland dishes and local goods. The menu features a variety of local specialties such as turkey, pea, and moose soup made fresh daily, cod au gratin, fish chowder, fish cakes, moose burgers, baked beans, chili, and more. Breakfast is served all day long. Visitors can also explore the souvenir store with an array of small gifts available for purchase.
Lovely shop. It is a treasure indeed. They sell all sorts of knickknacks and decor. There’s a huge section of clothing with locally made 100% wool sweaters/ toques/ mitts/ socks that is a serious must-buy considering how affordable and well knitted they feel (i sweat immediately trying on a toque). You want locally made very affordable quilts? There are some, too. There’s a small section for jams. They also carry saltwater taffy. And then there’s a restaurant with lovely homemade food. Touton and molasses? 100% would recommend. Fish cakes were light, crispy on the outside and fresh on the inside, not oily at all. The only letdown was the moose sausage (they were dry for our taste and would benefit from some fat or herb). They also sell breakfast and wraps to-go for hikers and some local games (moose pate!). The ladies running the shop are so lovely. Highly recommend.

I can see why they sell so many fishcakes, they tasted amazing! I had a delicious and filling breakfast and I also did takeout to bring a sandwich to go hiking and I was very happy. As I waited for my food I walked around their store and they had so many amazing souvenirs for sale, something for everyone. And the staff were so kind!

I love this place! Souvenirs and home cooking in one place. There were some locally made products including knitted sweaters and preserves. There are a few tables to sit for lunch or dinner but we opted for take-out. Food was amazing! Excellent fish cakes, absolutely loved the mustard relish/pickles, yummy touton and the moose soup was delicious. Pictures don't do it justice. Desserts were also great, tried the partridge berry cheesecake and a bakeapple tart. It was packaged up nicely, and a nice lady even ran out to our car because they forgot a small side of the pickles. Would definitely recommend and will go back.

This place is a must visit! Great big gift shop with a lot of local goods and souvenirs. We ordered veggie omelette, hash browns and french toasts. Loved the hash browns we had. Tasty and crispy. Omelette despite being veggie was not bland at all like at other breakfast places. Tasty! French toasts were also great. The shop has other local crafts things etc as shown in the picture. You can buy souvenirs as well. Owner was very hospitable and nice guy. The restaurant provides ample servings of delicious food cooked to perfection.
This place is just magnificent. The food is mouth-watering. The decor was awesome. The service was number one. Overall, I really enjoyed discovering this great restaurant as well as the surrounding area. It was my first trip to Newfoundland and I absolutely loved it.
Berline B — Google review
Food was good. The seafood was fresh and flavourful. But DO NOT get the Mac and cheese, it tasted like microwaved cheese and noodles. Service was quick. The patio was beautiful but the railing is at an awkward height so it blocks your view. Prices were fair but $10 for the mac and cheese is criminal knowing what it is.

Food was great, the scalop was great. Enjoyed every bit of it. Most recommended. You must try it when you're in the area
Mary L — Google review
We have had the chowder and steak! The portions were large and well priced! Quality was good considering the location of the restaurant! Staff was friendly and food came fast, we had the corner booth at sunset time and the sun was blaring into my eyes! Our poor decision to sit there!
Patrik D — Google review
Of all the places I’ve eaten, there’s nothing like the Old Loft. The chairs made out of old casks are sublime. Pan fried cod was delicious. The back deck overlooking Bonne Bay is fantastic. You might even see a whale.
Lee S — Google review
The plates are balanced with a side of veggies, which is very appreciated. Prices are fair considering the large portion size. They only had enough lemonade left for one glass, but it was literally the best lemonade we ever had; they only seem to prepare batches of it occasionally tho. The place has been our go-to for our short stay in the area.
Philippe C — Google review
The Old Loft Restaurant experience starts as soon as you step into the building - first floor is a gift shop with small art pieces and souvenirs. Upstairs, half of the floor is a lovely quilt display, while the restaurant is in the other half as well as a small second floor balcony. The decor includes prints from a local artists, really emphasizing the connection with nature. The service was attentive and the food was simple Newfoundland fare that was best when it highlighted the local seafood. My husband tried the seafood lasagna which he found was overpowered by cheddar cheese and had little flavour. My bacon wrapped scallops were perfectly cooked, but the plain broccoli, carrots, and mashed potatoes lacked seasoning.
Jessica N — Google review
This place is consistently a 4.5. This is fresh food - simple Newfoundland food that is cooked with love & where locals go. The plates are generous . Fresh seafood - not deep-fried - including caplin when they can get some. It’s relaxed & low-key. It’s a place you wanna sit back laugh and have a glass of wine. The house salad is a fresh unexpected delight. For lobster ask 24 hours ahead of time.

Good food, good service. Reservations are encouraged. We had an early evening reservation so that we could enjoy seeing the outdoors. We were seated beside the huge window which made our dinner even more enjoyable. The food is almost all locally sourced and the presentation was exquisite, considering the location of the restaurant and all. The servings were bigger than expected as well. We took a stroll down and enjoyed the breeze. A great way to end the evening.

Walked in for some take out fish and chips. Food was amazing a great portions for the price. Super good tartar sauce and delicious fish and chips. About 30 min wait once we ordered so we went down to the market to get some Quidi Vidi Brewery drinks. Sat out at the picnic tables to enjoy our food and the sunset was gorgeous, bugs were a bit bad though. I wouldn’t say the service was amazing, the server seems annoyed we ordered food was hoping we would just leave when she said it would take 30 mins to make.
Abby S — Google review
Great fish and chips. Service was not much. One tiny tartar sauce for two big pieces of fish. Why so stingy? More of a take out place I suppose. We sat outside with a wonderful view in picnic tables for lunch. Great food.
John B — Google review
Just finished dining at Jackie’s. I edited the hours of operation. Couldn’t take a picture of the hours because they were using one of those digital boards and it would flicker when I take a picture. Basically open we’d, thu, sat and Sunday. From 1130am-7.00pm. Closed Mon, Tue and Friday. I guess this is for the season. Basically no table service. You order and pay at the counter. Pick up at counter when it’s ready. There are 4 tables you can sit on. Basically self service. Fish and chips are probably the best on the west end on the island and top 4 in the province. Batter crisp and light.

The Missus and I along with the boys ate at Jackie's in 2016 when there was an option to eat in. On our latest visit, it was Take Out only with some picnic tables outside. We took our order back to our cabin. After finishing our trip of Newfoundland, we all agreed Jackie's had the best fish and chips. The fish was fried perfectly with a crispy batter and the chips delicious as well. It's a must have whenever we are in Rock Harbour. Highly recommend.
B W — Google review
So we just had the 4 portions of the fish and chips. The batter was so light and good however there was no seasoning in the batter or fish. It was so bland. It distracted from the meal because it ended up tasting like nothing. Very plain. However the batter was overly crispy or crunchy. Just needs a tweak. Add salt and some spices. Also they provide a packaged tartar sauce. It would be so much better with a homemade one. I would pay for the difference. Staff were so friendly and nice but I have fish and chips several times throughout the island and this should be better. Fries were great. Obviously not old oil as they were fresh and crispy.
Ryan K — Google review
If there was an option for 6 stars they’d get it! Delicious fish and chips, warm, cozy atmosphere on a cool rainy day. We dined in, the food came new quickly. 12/10 would definitely recommend!

Nestled in the picturesque Rocky Harbour, the Oceans Room Restaurant at the Ocean View Hotel is a culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Under the expert guidance of Chef Joseph Kalynuik, this charming eatery transforms home-cooked meals into gourmet delights, featuring everything from hearty homemade soups to delectable pies crafted from scratch. The menu shines with fresh, sustainable ingredients sourced locally—think in-season fish and mussels straight from nearby waters, alongside vibrant fruits and vegetables grown right in the region.
We enjoyed ourselves to a very nice dinner after our Gros Morne hike! Very pleased with the good, best chowder I have had! We had the bowl of chowder, calamari, the cod and some mocktails! The calamari was very good and fresh, perfectly cooked, lightly seasoned! The cod was a bit oily for my taste but still very tasty and outstanding! The veggies were sautéed in molasses and were incredible! 10/10 must visit!
Patrik D — Google review
Great service, but the food is average and somewhat expensive for what it is. Linguine flavour could be more coherent and might have been underseasoned. The bread it came with was lukewarm and not crisp. Nice views of the water. Convenient hours.
R L — Google review
Dined at the ocean view for a special occasion, my 40th birthday. Have to say, we weren’t super impressed by the food or the service. The mushroom caps appetizer was horrible, no flavour, the seafood linguine, for $33 had canned shrimp, and a few small pieces of salmon at best. The signature dish, the pan fried cod, was mediocre, a very small portion of fish for the price. And the $43 steak was also not worth the price. The $40 bottle of wine that was ordered wasn’t delivered on ice , we had to ask for an ice bucket which took a long time to be delivered, the service was rather slow. Unfortunately we won’t be back, which is sad we were looking forward to a great meal. It cost us $250 to feed four people. Not worth the money!!

Incredibly disappointed with our experience last night at the Ocean Room. What appeared to be an upscale dining experience, definitely did not translate to the restaurants food, ambiance, or service. We arrived without reservations, and were told we couldn’t be seated until an hour later, this was fine. We made a reservation and returned an hour later. There were at least a dozen tables without diners when we initially arrived and then again when we returned. I assume this may have been due to being short staffed. We were seated promptly when we returned to a table for two with a lovely view of the harbour. We had our order taken quickly. Our server was friendly and accommodating but seemed inexperienced. We ordered martinis, lobster mushroom caps to start, lobster dinner and lamb shank for entrees. Our martinis were great but it all went downhill from there. The lobster mushroom caps were rather tasteless, the ingredients didn’t meld well together and the mushrooms could have been cooked further to enhance the dish. The Lobster was small which wouldn’t have been a problem but it was also overcooked. The lobster was still edible but just not worth the expense. The lamb shank was the worst part of the whole meal. The meat was tough and full of gristle. I ended up sending it back to the kitchen. I was given the option to select a second meal which was nice, I chose the salmon. I ended up asking for it to go as by the time it came out of the kitchen my mom had already finished her meal. Upon arriving home and finishing the meal the salmon was decent but due to the whole experience it was very underwhelming. I would not recommend this restaurant. It seems to be trying to hard to appear upscale but missing the mark completely.

A Wonderful Surprise on the Woody Point Waterfront! Nestled in the beautiful town of Woody Point within Gros Morne National Park, The Merchant Warehouse looks like a simple, pleasant spot from the street. But step inside, and you'll discover it's so much more. We were immediately charmed by a small, 50s-style retro diner at the entrance, which then opened up into a large, restaurant and wine bar. The best surprise of all was the discovery of a deck with about eight tables perched right on the water. On a hot summer day, it was the perfect place to be, sitting under an umbrella and taking in the stunning view of Bonne Bay. I asked our friendly waitress for a "last meal on earth" recommendation, and she suggested either the Fish and Chips or one of their burgers. My wife went with the two-piece Fish and Chips and a glass of white wine, while I chose the Cheeseburger with Bacon Platter and a Pepsi. While we waited, we saw several orders of spectacular-looking onion rings being delivered to other tables, and they looked so good we had to add them to our order. Our meals arrived promptly and everything looked delicious. My wife’s fish was two pieces of fresh, local cod with a wonderfully light and crispy batter, cooked to flaky perfection. (A helpful tip for anyone visiting the province: in Newfoundland, "Fish and Chips" exclusively means cod!). My cheeseburger was fantastic – a juicy, locally made patty topped with a thick slice of bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and raw onions on a soft, fresh bun. Both meals came with a side of perfectly golden, fresh-cut fries. The homemade onion rings were just as great as they looked. If you find yourself in Woody Point, I can't recommend The Merchant Warehouse highly enough. With its surprising depth, waterfront view, and delicious, house-made food, it's a must-visit. Bonus Tip: The beautiful deck is also pet-friendly!

Really cool décor inside and the staff were very nice. Had their fish burger and it came out quick and was very tasty. The bun was great and the fish was crispy and flaky I was very happy.

Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF)

Regional airport
Deer Lake Regional Airport is situated on the western part of the island and serves as a convenient entry point for international travelers, particularly those arriving from the United States. The airport offers major rental car agencies, making it easy to pick up a vehicle upon arrival. Navigating the island by car is relatively straightforward due to its limited road network.
Pretty good for a small airport in a somewhat remote area in Canada. It’s clean, organized, friendly security personnel, a small Robins donut and snack area, outlets for plugging in your phone can be found on some posts, and a huge window to see the planes and staff in operation. They have art in the airport too - from sculpture to murals. One of the best features for me was the Flybrary - a small section with gently used books encouraging travellers to take a book and return them when they fly back or replace with another book. Organized by the Newfoundland and Labrador Library. This is such a neat and brilliant idea, I wish all the airports in Canada did the same. There’s a little box compete with a red fire hydrant where pets can do their toilet needs! Cool!

Say what you will about smaller airports but personally, I prefer them. My 8th time here. Security has never taken more than 5 minutes. Not a whole lot of amenities/stores, but it does have all of the basics. Rental parking is very close to the terminal. There are only 3 gates so the waiting area is small. Staff are always friendly.

Awesome experience at Deer lake airport. Got to love these small airports with friendly people, respect and everything we need. From parking availability, to very welcoming people (car rental, security, plane companies etc), such a pleasant place to be ! Security is on top as well, while friendly, I think I triggered all the possible detectors with my semi metallic belt :) , yet, they handled it with respect and professionalism as well.

For a smaller airport I would say they are doing a great job. Have never had a problem and the staff is always more than helpful. big up on the Robin's now after you pass through security.

Great regional airport, nice and clean. Easy access!

This is the most poorly organized airport I’ve ever been in. The people here are great but it’s so busy that you need to wait for an hour to drop bags. There are no self serve bag drop stations. This place needs to be bigger with a lot more staff. It’s so loud that you cannot hear any announcements. Everyone shows up 2-1/2 bouts early to make the flight because it is known that it takes that long to get through the crowd. Often times people that are scheduled later are ahead of you in the line which slows things down even more. I do all I can to avoid this place.

Small airport, easy to locate off highway, plenty of parking, easy to rent/return cars, inside has gift shop and info centre, multiple car rental stations, place to eat and and a gift shop, inside gate area has vending machines that need cash.

It's hard to give this tiny airport a bad review. I mean it's not 5 stars but I've never had a bad experience here either. Staff are friendly and helpful. There's a cafe, convenience store, water fountain and the bathroom facilities are clean. Tons of seating with places to plug in. Parking is available and I've never seen it crowded so getting in and out is fast.
