Death Railway Museum and Research Centre

Museum
Specialty Museums
The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, situated near the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery Don Rak, is a museum established in the 1990s. It showcases a collection of relics discovered by collectors using metal detectors, along with informative panels, photographs, video clips, and an interactive topographical map of the 415-kilometer-long railway.
The visit to the Death Railway Museum and the train ride along the historic Thai-Burma Railway was both thrilling and deeply educational. It shed light on the tragic history of the railway and the countless prisoners of war who lost their lives during its construction—earning it the name “Death Railway.” The museum’s detailed information, photographs, and dioramas vividly portray this somber past, leaving a lasting emotional impact. A day trip from Bangkok to the Death Railway is highly recommended, and if time allows, spending 1–2 nights in Kanchanaburi district offers a great opportunity to further explore the area.
Duran N — Google review
Informative and well maintained. On the second floor there was a small display case with belonging that had been donated from several POW families that I found especially interesting. History, timelines and maps were helpful.
Sydney K — Google review
Excellent place and location. Great service and friendly staffs. Value for tickets. Very excellent museum. After walking all around then you can bring the tickets for to get the drinks free at coffee shop up stair. Excellent place that you shouldn't miss out when you come to Khanchanaburi Thailand.
Mrs.Vorawan V — Google review
Good flow, very educational and informative. Hard to give a death museum 5 stars but definitely worth a visit. 170 baht for adult ticket, this comes with a free tea or coffee available in the cafe upstairs. Would allow 1hr+. Nice staff
Jonathan F — Google review
It was interesting to read the stories surrounding the bridge and see some of the artifacts associated with the area. There are some temples on the site as well. There is a good view from the 4th floor of one of the temples. Worth the 50 baht entrance fee.
Mary D — Google review
Very informative and learned a lot of things that I didn’t know. Plenty of interactive exhibits. Ticket to get in entitles you to a free tea or coffee in cafe upstairs, which also sells snacks and soft drinks
Greg R — Google review
Explains in depth on the reasoning behind the construction of this railway and how it was built. Reminds us that we shouldn’t allow such atrocities to happen again
Albert S — Google review
Very moving experience .very sad what the pisoners endured and how's so many died from so many countries. Educating. Please endure and pay your respects to our fallen.

Cemetery
Nestled in the heart of Kanchanaburi, the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery serves as a solemn tribute to over 6,000 Commonwealth and Dutch soldiers who tragically lost their lives while forced to construct the infamous Burma-Siam railway during World War II. This beautifully maintained cemetery features lush gardens and manicured lawns, creating a serene environment for visitors to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by these courageous individuals.
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is a solemn, well-maintained, and deeply moving place. It’s not about grandeur but about memory—lined with headstones that represent individual stories and sacrifices. Visitors often describe it as a quiet space that prompts reflection and gratitude. Pairing it with the railway museum across the street makes for a balanced and meaningful visit. If you value thoughtful, emotional travel, I’d highly recommend making time for this. The cemetery holds nearly 7,000 graves—mainly British, Australian, and Dutch POWs from the Burma Railway. It also includes ashes of victims from a cholera outbreak and a memorial for those whose graves couldn’t be maintained elsewhere.
Kirandeep W — Google review
A peaceful and moving place that honors the memory of Allied POWs who died building the Death Railway. The cemetery is beautifully maintained and offers a quiet space for reflection. A must visit if you're in Kanchanaburi and interested in WWII history.
T G — Google review
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, also known as Don-Rak War Cemetery, is the primary burial ground for prisoners of war who died during the construction of the Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway. Located in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, it holds the graves of over 6,900 Allied soldiers, primarily British, Australian, and Dutch, who perished from exhaustion, malnutrition, and disease.
Unggul W — Google review
A sad memorial to prisoners of war who died on a construction of the railway. Most of the soldiers died in their 20s. Well maintained.
Balázs K — Google review
The Kanchanaburi war cemetery is a solemn place dedicated to the memory of the fallen during world war 2. There were many nationalities during this period but I believe majority of the ones buried here are either British or Australian. It's right across the death railway museum.
Richard F — Google review
Absolutely beautiful and peaceful place of remembrance whilst also full of sadness. The place is extremely well kept and in pristine condition. Thankyou to the local workers here.
Ian L — Google review
Visit this place to give respect to war sufferers, who lost their lives during world war 2. Similar cemetery is at Kohima , Nagaland , India where the Japanese were defeated by allied armies.

Wat Tham Suea

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Perched atop a majestic hill, Wat Tham Suea, also known as the Tiger Cave Temple, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The temple complex features multiple architectural wonders including several towers and pagodas of various styles. The highlight is an 18-meter-tall golden Buddha statue that dominates the Kanchanaburi landscape. Visitors can spend at least an hour exploring the elegant sanctuary and climbing up two towers, an orange pagoda, and a Chinese tower for panoramic vistas.
This was my first time visiting Wat Tham Sue, and I was blown away. The massive golden Buddha is even more impressive in real life than in photos. The temple stays on a hilltop with 360° views of green rice fields and mountains. I went in the afternoon and the light was perfect for photos. The climb up the stairs wasn’t too difficult, but I’d recommend using cable car, which costs 40 baht per round. The architecture is a mix of Thai and Chinese styles, with colorful details and a peaceful vibe. Highly recommend this place if you’re in Kanchanaburi 👍🏻👍🏻
Nhi N — Google review
The Tiger Cave Temple is stunning, with its giant golden Buddha statue and panoramic views over the countryside. The stair climb is worth it – at the top you’re rewarded with breathtaking scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. A must-visit when exploring Kanchanaburi.
ThaiRoadRides — Google review
The temple we made our second visit from six years ago, recently they have an elevator in construction the time we went on June2025. It's worth going up, the huge Buddha architecture is stunning and the peaceful rice fields view from above are all the elements that made me want to come pay a visit again.
Vi C — Google review
if you’re up for a serious climb, excited by views and meditation, and respectful of the temple’s spiritual side. It’s a sweaty, tough trek—but the summit will leave you feeling accomplished, energized, and more than a little inspired.

Stunning temple with views all around. Car lift not working so steps it is 10 mins up. Worth going for sure
M D — Google review
Wow alot of steps to walk up at the start but the view and the temple is very beautiful and definitely worth it !! There is a cable car 20 baht per person to take you to the bottom of you don't want to walk down again Fantastic place

The cable car was closed; the temple closes before 4pm. Reach in time if you want to see everything. Overall, very beautiful temple. You can go to the cafés in the other side of the hill to get incredible views of the temple.

Erawan National Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Erawan National Park is a renowned destination featuring tiered waterfalls, picturesque hiking trails, and opportunities for nature exploration and swimming. The park is home to the iconic Bridge over the Kwai River, a significant relic from World War II. Visitors can also pay their respects at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and admire the panoramic views from Wat Tham Sua temple.
It's a well maintained tourist attraction. The national park is set up to receive a large number of people, there is plenty of parking and amenities. Access to the waterfalls is relatively easy and the climb is not too steep. Any fitness level can manage. A lot of rules around taking plastic bottles and food. Don't litter and get a swim vest if you want to jump in the pools. It's around 1 hour drive from the main town. During the off season I would recommend staying in a nice hotel in kanchanaburi and drive yourself to the national park.
Gwen W — Google review
🌿 Erawan National Park 📍 94GV+5HW, Tha Kradan, Si Sawat District, Kanchanaburi 71250, Thailand This is truly one of the most beautiful national parks in Thailand! The highlight here is the Erawan Waterfall, which has seven tiers, each one different and stunning in its own way. The first few levels are easy to reach and great for relaxing or swimming, while the upper levels take a bit more effort to hike but are absolutely worth it. There are small shops near the entrance where you can buy food, snacks, drinks, and coffee before starting your walk. You can also take a golf cart ride to the first level if you prefer not to walk the first stretch. After the second level, you’ll need to register your water bottles and leave a small deposit (refunded when you bring them back). No food is allowed beyond this point, which helps keep the waterfalls clean, something I really appreciate. If you’re visiting during a Thai public holiday, be prepared for large crowds. Otherwise, on normal days, it’s peaceful and very enjoyable. There’s also a campground if you want to stay overnight, and nearby spots like the Erawan Dam are worth checking out too. Entrance Fees (as of 2025): •Thai Adults: 100 THB | Thai Children: 50 THB •Foreign Adults: 300 THB | Foreign Children: 200 THB Overall, this park is 100% worth the trip, beautiful nature, clean water, and well-maintained trails. A must-visit if you’re in Kanchanaburi!

Erawan Waterfall is a truly beautiful place, surrounded by lush green forest and a peaceful natural atmosphere. The facilities are convenient and reasonably priced, making it easy for anyone to enjoy the trip without worry. The waterfall and the surrounding forest are well-preserved, and visitors from many countries come to experience its charm. The staff are kind, helpful, and attentive. They make sure everyone is safe, whether it’s providing life jackets or keeping an eye on the hiking areas. Food options are varied, and prices are fair with no hidden charges. There are also comfortable shuttle services to and from the town, which makes the whole trip even smoother. It’s the kind of place that leaves you with a warm feeling — the beauty, the friendly people, and the relaxing atmosphere all make you want to come back again
Mr. ( — Google review
This national park has a ratger expensive admission (100THB for the locals and 300THB for the foreigners). Due to the popularity of this national park, getting into the park by car including the waiting time at the entrance for payment would take at least half hour. Howwver, there are plenty of parking spaces which drivers do not have to worry about. The park is huge so consider spending at least whole day. There are 7 levels of waterfalls and each of them has its own uniqueness and difficulty. Overall the exprience was not too good because there are simply too many people, but I would recommend to visit there at least once in your lifetime.
Angus P — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Erawan National Park is one of the best attractions in Kanchanaburi. It has seven beautiful waterfall levels, each with clear blue water where you can swim and relax. The hike to the top takes about 1.5–2 hours, and the trail is well-marked. There are food stalls, rest areas, and clean facilities near the entrance. Best to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowd and enjoy the cooler weather. Highly recommended for nature and adventure lovers! 🌿💧
Waw S — Google review
300 Baht for foreigners. There are 7 levels(waterfalls). It took about 90 minutes to complete (from bottom to top & back down to the bottom), with short photo stops & excluding swimming. It can get steep at some point but it's all worth it. Make sure to bring lots of water, towels, change of clothes & a little cash & good vibes!
Cheron H — Google review
An amazing park with lots of pools and waterfalls, with seven points having a really convenient, organized entrance that is worth the price. The hike up the mountain to waterfall 7 is both beautiful and pleasant on clear, cold days. We spent 3 hours there without anyone noticing. It was amazing, highly recommend.
YOAV L — Google review

The JEATH War Museum Kanchanaburi

History museum
The JEATH War Museum in Kanchanaburi offers a poignant look into the suffering of prisoners of war during the construction of the Thailand-Burma railway. The museum features photographs, equipment, and a bamboo house that replicates the living conditions of POWs. Visitors can gain insight into the harsh realities faced by Allied forces under Japanese occupation during World War II. Despite its small size, it provides a moving tribute to those who endured such hardships.
The day after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese invaded Thailand (Dec 8th 1941) 10 days later they sign a treaty with Thais to build a railway through to Burma (Myanmar) as they wanted to take the British colony including India without exposing themselves to British U-boats in the Indian ocean. Thais agreed but not to include Thais in the construction. 6 months later POWs from Singapore are brought into Thailand 16 months (Nov 1943) the railway is complete with the loss of 100,000 Asians and Ally POW's Railway is only used for 20 months before the Allies bomb the Bridge over the River Kwai Today not all of the 415km track is used, and only 5% of those who died are recorded in burials
Alan O — Google review
I think what I liked most about this museam would be the artistry and story telling. Here you will learn not only about WW2 but also important changes of power over the centuries. Through the wall of art you will learn about multiple struggles between Loas, Cambodia, Thailand, Bruma and Vietnam. In addition to learning about royalty and local customs. The museam is situation as the main attraction but has several stores and eateries around it. Of course the landscape is gorgeous and something I have emphasized within this review.
Andrea A — Google review
The museum itself is not very big, neither are there really informative signs. But there are many pictures at display here. The shocking pictures are horrifying, and it shows you how cruel the history was at the place where you are standing at. Recommended for a visit!
Stephen — Google review
Not so much to say about the place. When you get there, you need to see a 9-minute video presentation about the history of the railway construction on how the prisoners of war built it. On how the prisoners of war was maltreated, and how many people have died during that time. Taking photos are not allowed inside the museum. The museum is the jump off area to the railway by speed boat.
James N — Google review
Pretty run down and brief, basically a bunch of old photo prints and some paintings. The few artifacts they do have are pretty average with some clearly not being from the period or related at all
William K — Google review
Nov 2020. 50 baht. They tried, but this is basically a bunch of tired old photos and paintings in a gallery. A few old war relics in a case round out an underwhelming tour. Allow 10 mins. The Death Railway museum (Thailand-Burma Railway Centre) is the best memorial museum in the city.
Aaron N — Google review
Great place to pop and visit after a walk across the Bridge over the river Kwai. Only 50 baht to enter so its as cheap as chips.

A really interesting place so much more than I've posted lots of history here

Wat Ban Tham

Sights & Landmarks
Wat Ban Tham, also known as the Dragons Head Temple, is a unique Buddhist site with a history dating back to the Ayutthaya period. The monastery features nine caves, including two within the monastery itself. Access to the site involves climbing a staircase that enters through a giant dragon's mouth, leading past two natural caves converted into Buddhist chapels. The temple's impressive and colorful architecture includes a staircase that resembles the body of a dragon and is adorned with temple murals.
Very pretty place with a beautiful stair leasing to a temple cave. Inside the dragon is written the legend of the cave. It's not too hard to go to the cave and the views are beautiful. Inside the cave you can take a long stairs to the top of the mountains for the view and golden chedi, this part is harder. It takes 1h30 to explore everything. Not crowded at all and snacks and restaurants at the bottom. The only downside is that it's hard to get there. You have two use Grab or your own transportation. Free to explore.
C C — Google review
We visited this temple quite late afternoon. Not crowded and no shop opens. We just taking walk around then came back, not hide to 5 destinations of temple. The temple was designed as a dragon. With head chamber, neck, body....tail. Head with the open mouth is the way to begin 1st destination...tail is end with the viewpoint from mountain. Parking is front. Lots of dogs there but they are very friendly. Free entry ticket.
Đặng L — Google review
We came here on 26 July 2025. Lots of steps up to the dragon’s cave. Wear comfortable shoes. Unfortunately the temple area is not well maintained. Many parts can be improved.
Christopher L — Google review
Such a beautiful temple and well worth the hike up. Although it is a little tiring with the steps, the views and the temple at the top of the hill will leave you amazed. The dragon head entrance was also interesting to see and I really enjoyed looking at the frescoes engraved on the side of the walls. Definitely recommended if you are in the Kanchanaburi area.
Dule I — Google review
Around 2km hike. 1st part is very easy and end with a big cave. If you go higher you can see the whole area. Very beautiful scenary. Entrance free and very good people in the starting point. Not very famous tourist attraction. But if you like hiking this is a good place in kanchanaburi.
Ramesh N — Google review
Lovely temple with many steps especially if you go right to the top but the views are worth the climb. Take a slight detour near the very top to go into another smaller cave. There's a rope to help you get down to the stairs. Worth the extra few minutes.
Robert S — Google review
Wow 😮 so so beautiful walking inside the dragon 🐉 very unique temple !!
Joseph O — Google review
To explore this temple involved a lot of stairs hiking, but it is quite rewarding as well. There is already a temple compound at the foothill. Up the stairs and you will meet with a dragon, and enter a dragon. There is a temple mid hill which offer a great view of the surroundings. You can enter a cave which host a large golden Buddha. Continue going up from the cave will lead to a golden Stupa at the top, an amazing place to chill and take on the positive energy of the temple.

Mueang Sing Historical Park, situated in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, is a fascinating archaeological site that showcases the remains of an ancient Khmer temple complex dating back to the 13th century. The park features well-preserved ruins of two ancient Khmer temples and a burial site where prehistoric skeletons were discovered.
This place is massive and they charge extras for a taxi entering- my friend and I were lucky enough to tip 100 baht for the grab driver to wait for us for 2 hours as the grab driver said that it wasn’t very crowded on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm and they would not be able to find another customer on the way back. The park was good for a nice walk and checking out sights and there is lush greenery and ruins around. Do bring bug spray as I had to use it every hour to keep the bugs from my shoulders and legs!
Natalie T — Google review
Large, well maintained park with interesting historical relics. The turning from the main road is signposted in English with the words "Prasat Muang Sing". It was fairly quiet when I went, maybe 10 or so other visitors in the whole park. So nice for relaxation and a walk in peace. There are a few gift and drinks shops and ample parking. Toilet facilities are also available at no extra charge. Entry for foreigners is now 120 baht. I also paid 20 baht to bring my scooter in, so total 140 baht - which I feel was reasonable. The Thai citizens entry price is much less, 20 baht or so as I remember, which is fair enough. This is not a particularly affluent area of the country.
Martin G — Google review
Huge historical site that pet also allowed, but just help keeping area clean from dog poop. Well preserved castle. Recommend visiting in the evening before 16.30 (park close) 1 hour to avoid heatstroke. Fee for Thai citizen 20THB/person, car 50THB
Narupon S — Google review
Historical site dating back to the 13th century. Khmer complex, dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva. We saw probably 3-4 other people during our time here. Though the site is big, there isn’t much to see. If you have limited time you can visit the park quickly and see the sites 1, 2, 3, 4 in the park. Ample parking space, ticket price is 100b/p for foreigners. You can either park the car outside or pay 50B to drive inside the park.
Vandana J — Google review
So cool Random historical park with ruins and burial ground Ticket is around 100 bhat but there is a side road that u can get into for free Get a scooter to drive around cause it's massive
Susankhya S — Google review
If you're a young international traveler visiting Kanchanaburi and have limited time, I’d recommend skipping Mueang Sing Historical Park unless you’re genuinely interested in history. We hired a driver and spent an hour getting to the park from our hotel, but unfortunately, we found ourselves bored after just 45 minutes. There are only a handful of monuments to see, and it’s easy to explore the entire site in less than an hour. While there are a few small souvenir and snack stalls on-site with reasonable prices. Admission for foreigners is 120 baht.
Gary C — Google review
Fantastic place well worth the visit and at least a couple of hours. Do see the museum.

Mueang Sing Historical Park is a peaceful retreat. Even during peak holidays Even though there are many tourists But the atmosphere remains calm and relaxed. The park is large and you can drive around. To easily explore the ruins If you don't want It's a great place to enjoy history and nature in a more peaceful setting without the usual crowds. So this perfect place for a quiet retreat to see and enjoy all the attractions with a good weather.

Elephants World, located just outside Kanchanaburi, is an elephant sanctuary dedicated to providing ethical and responsible care for domestic elephants. Unlike other facilities, Elephants World rescues these majestic creatures from inhumane treatment and offers them a safe haven. Visitors can engage in one-on-one experiences such as feeding and bathing the elephants while learning about their rehabilitation.
This was one of the most beautiful and heartwarming tours I've ever been. The tour guys are amazing, the elephants are super calm, the activities are very much interactive, and the lunch provided was delicious. Since I booked a single day tour for my wife and I, we also had a light snack before leaving. All of this was included in the package. Our tour guy Mai was very interactive, kind, and caring to all of us. In the group only had a total of 6 persons which made the experience very professional, personal and fun. Thank you, Mai, for your caring side of life.

I was very sceptical of going to an unethical place however from what I personally saw today I believe the elephants are happy and well treated. The tour guide spoke English very well, he was entertaining and sarcastic overall lots of banter and laughs. It took us 3 hours to get there, we then ate lunch and began the activities 1.5 hours after arrival. I will say all of the activities were very repetitive for the elephants with all of the groups coming in however the elephants knew the routine and I did not see any of the tour guides or elephant keepers be forceful or doing wrong by animals. There was lots of dogs at every activity spot. The only thing I was concerned about / did not like to see was there is a bull (I think?) which appeared to be tied to a tree.. overall it was a good experience

We had a great time here and our guide Gogo was awesome! He went above and beyond in making sure we were having a great time and proactively offering to take our photo. We had a great time meeting the elephants and feeding them watermelons! Very good value for the money, we did a half day and we were able to spend a lot of time with the elephants. There are elephants freely roaming around that you get to interact with. Generally when feeding there is a bar separating you because the elephants are very excited to get at the food!

Come visit this beautiful place where you can spend time with rescued elephants and adorable baby elephants. I didn’t book in advance due to the unpredictable weather, but I called them and was lucky to find an available spot. It’s just a quick 30-minute Grab ride to get there from Kanchanaburi hotel. I enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch from 12 to 1 pm. Don’t forget to pack a change of clothes and wear shorts! (Or you can buy at the survivor store there) You’ll have the chance to head to the river and help bathe the elephants. It’s a fun and refreshing experience you won’t want to miss! The trip was truly meaningful. The guides are friendly, speak great English, and share wonderful stories about the elephants' lives. They prioritize our safety and are always ready to help you capture amazing photos and videos with the elephants. Seeing the elephants so happy and playful with the staff was heartwarming. The staff even helped arrange my ride back to the hotel at the end of the day (around 3:30pm). Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to connect with these gentle giants!

The staff at Elephants World are very accommodating, knowledgeable, and kind! Keim led my 6-hour day, and he taught us so much about the elephants and how they are cared for at this rescue. Each elephant has a personality - it was breathtaking to interact with them, especially given that they have had previous negative interactions with humans before arriving at this rescue. The driver they arranged was very professional and helpful! I hope to go back again!

Absolutely THE highlight of our Thailand holiday! Loved seeing the elephants roaming freely, feeding them sugarcane, making the banana/grass balls for grandma elephant (82 with no teeth) and cutting sugarcane for them. The lunch was yummy too, i bought souvinnaires too!

We tried the overday package which was worth every penny! Shoutout to Kim and Chang (not sure if the spelling is correct) for being amazing, fun and helpful during our day tour. We started with elephant feeding, followed by seeing the baby and mama elephant, and helping with food prep for grandma elephant who has a dietary restriction. Highlight of the day is getting the elephant soaked with mud, and washing them up to the River Kwai. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and see how they live like us, humans. Worth the experience!!! 10/10

From the start of the day every interaction with the people associated with this venture have been wonderful. On time collection and great drive down. Smiling, happy welcome upon arrival. And we hadn't even started the "official" tour yet! Elephants are amazing. They look to enjoy this good life with the care that they receive. The best thing you can do is immerse yourself in some of the daily tasks like feeding the elephants, chopping fruit, cooking rice and making sticky rice balls which you then get to feed to the oldest female in the park. Lunch provided was amazing. Plenty of options including vegan and vegetarian. You can then give them a mud bath followed by giving them a good scrub in the clear fresh water. I'm an avid animal lover so seeing animals so well treated whilst educating people about the care of these great animals was a joy to see. Special mention to our guide Khem. And thank you to all the team at elephant world!😊

Visitors can explore the area's harrowing past by visiting important World War II sites such as the Allied War Cemetery, Thailand-Burma Railway Center, and Hellfire Pass.
If you're into classic trains and world war 2 history then this place is a good site for visiting. You'll see the bridge which you can get on at and walk over. The train is actually quite slow so you'll have plenty of time to avoid it. Plenty of people wave at the train as it crosses the bridge which is a cool video to take. This place is free to visit.

My 91 year old father returned to Thailand after 51 years to visit me and my girlfriend. We decided to bring him to this historic area seeing how he is a history buff. He served in the United States Air Force. He loved seeing and touching things he had read about or seen in movies. I am happy to create memories with him in this capacity.

4th October 2025: Historic location to visit, we visited at the start of the tourist season and it was ok, would imagine in high season the whole area is extremely busy. There is a POW camp on the other side of the river, the place is a total myth and tourist trap as no camp ever existed there. Plenty to see in the bridge area with the museum and cemetery in close proximity.

Very beautiful place not to Miss. Many people come here as it has a big history from world war. Magnificent Creation in those days. I like. There are many photos shots. Don't forget to bring your camera. Come when train comes. Very good. 2025 Oct

It is a nice place to visit, it is a must for those who care about history. Everything about the place says "old." Not very well maintained. The museum is mostly old and faded pictures. The bridge need some fixing. The train looks like it hasn't been updated since 1942. But, this is Thailand, not big on maintenence. The market is cool, but same old trinkets.
Michael C — Google review
This is an absolute must-see attraction in Thailand. You could consider taking the train from Bangkok; the train travels slowly and offers beautiful views of the Thai countryside along the way.
Ching L — Google review
We were there on a Sunday afternoon and a train was passing through. It was a good place to relects on action that was done by a party to another and the impact to the future. I was glad that the railway was still in use and hope god give rewards to the builders that was force to built it in their after life.
Fauziah S — Google review
This place is a very scenic area, the river, the green hills in the background, and the old trains make it great for photos. You can walk across the bridge but just watch out for the tourist train that occasionally comes through. There are lots of food stalls, coffee shops, and souvenir stores around, so it’s easy to spend an hour here. I visited around 2 PM, it was not too hot, and the light was beautiful.

Museums
JEATH War Museum, located near the famous Bridge on the River Kwai in Thailand, offers a poignant look at WWII history and the construction of the Death Railway. The museum houses a collection of documents, memorabilia, photos, videos, weaponry, and dioramas depicting forced labor during its construction. Visitors can also see historical items from weapons and vehicles to the remains of prisoners who perished during the war.
Really enjoyed this museum next to the bridge. It has an incredible view point on the fourth floor and it had a really vast collection of items and memorabilia. I don’t usually enjoy museums and tend to speed through but spent a good couple hours in here as there was so much variety. A shame it’s closing as both the exhibits, view and architecture are beautiful. Only 50 baht entry is a bargain. A shame it’s closing soon. Hope it gets saved!!
Jake E — Google review
A very important museum, but it’s being shut down and so the upkeep has taken a backseat. I still think it’s worth the visit until it’s closed! It’s an important part of history during The Second World War and I appreciate the insight it provides on Japanese colonialism and the conflicts between the Thai and Burmese people. Important history lessons. I would recommend the morning, it was super warm when I went it made the walks a bit more challenging!
Jada H — Google review
We thought this was the official war museum but that is next to the war cemetery. Incredible amount of historic items including old vehicles and a chopper to look at. Several different museums in one. Great view over the river Kwai as well, Shame it's closing down

An interesting mix of WWII and Thai history in one museum. Though be quick, the signs said 2025 was the last year it would be open

. But outside you can see old train engine. I like the place. Can't go inside.late I came. 2025 Oct
Leslie L — Google review
It’s closing at the end of 2025 , maybe turn into a hotel . Go see it if you’re around . Not the most proper display of materials, but you get a general sense of the hardship of the war
Jonas C — Google review
Ok little museum to visit. Unfortunately almost all information was in Thai so we missed out on half the museum when we went there. But what we did see was an okay experience and the entrance fee of 50 baht was fair compared to the things the museum had to offer
Kasper H — Google review
This small museum contains some interesting things, which are not always well promoted. The explanations are succinct and the English translations are sometimes approximate. The museum can be done quickly in 15 minutes, but you'll need more time to look in more detail.

Keeree Tara is a casual restaurant that offers classic Thai dishes and stunning views of the famous River Kwai Bridge. Popular menu items include coconut milk fish curry, pineapple fried rice, tom yum, and cappuccino. Next to Keeree Tara is The Village Farm To Cafe, a modern wooden cafe nestled among mountains with a bamboo tunnel for leisurely strolls.
This is an affordable “high-so” ( high society) Thai food restaurant by the river . The Kuan Im temple is across the river .. bridge over river Kwai insight too. The menu is extensive. Couldn’t decide what to eat Came alone Ordered Isan pork sausage starter .. duck curry n omelette … n coconut drink Oh no. I ordered too much for one person .. the portion is generous . Could not finish all . Oh no The food is delicious!!!! The duck curry is unique … there are grapes in the curry . Live bassa nova music so good The singer can sing very very well !!

A very unique restaurant by the waterfront. Perfect for a date or family gathering. This place is usually packed but we came on a Tuesday night and it is a lot less crowded. The food is delightful and the service is excellent. Top notch.

Fried chicken was really good, they have aircon dining hall and river side tables. It was really worthwhile to try this restaurant. Mocha was good, too.

Great view and atmosphere. Awesome food and service. We ordered local vegetable stir fry, Sun omelette (omelette with rice and shrimp) and fish tom yam. They were all tasty. The fish had no bone at all. Rice was good too, soft and warm. The desserts were great too. We ordered some-shun and tiny mango in syrup. Really love them. The music was very as well.
Jaruswan W — Google review
Excellent food. But for a nice, more pricey restaurant why are you using single use plastics?? Cutlery wrapped in plastic. Drinks in plastic cups. So disappointing to see this. You can do better than this!

Here for lunch with friends. Splendid place!! Food is super with great river view. Perfect place. Live the deep fried small local fishes. Their omelette is also interesting!

Vegan restaurant
On’s Thai-Issan Vegan is a popular plant-based eatery in Kanchanaburi, founded by On from Si Saket province. The restaurant offers a diverse menu of authentic Thai and Issan vegetarian and vegan dishes at affordable prices. In addition to dining, visitors can also take cooking classes to learn the art of Thai vegan cuisine from the patient and friendly master chef.
Delicious vegan dishes. We had the Red Curry, Tom Yum and Tempura Vegs. All dishes were beautifully seasoned and prepared with love. Also the portions are quite large for the price you pay. Priced very reasonably. To drink we tried the Hibiscus tea and Ginger tea (both cold drinks). Very refreshing. Highly recommend.
Carina — Google review
Had a great meal at On’s! The staff were lovely and the food was excellent, absolutely massive portions! I had the Tom yum which came with tofu and veggies, and the ginger tea which was great too (super fiery and refreshing!). 100% recommend to people whether you’re vegetarian or not.
Jordan F — Google review
A vegetarian restaurant with many fully vegan options. The restaurant is located in the heart of Kanchanaburi’s backpackers street and caters mostly to foreigners. Seems they modify their dishes to fit foreigners palate which in my opinion really takes away from the authentic Thai flavor. The food is clean and portions are huge, prices are moderate. Good restaurant, just not my favorite.
Guy B — Google review
A must-visit in Kanchanaburi! Delicious food with generous portions, friendly staff who can adjust dishes to your needs, and a cozy, homely atmosphere. They also offer Vegetarian cooking classes for just 800 THB (3 dishes + 1 dessert). My favorite spot in town!
Joanna K — Google review
Super restaurant. Very friendly, really tasty vegetarian food. Prices very reasonable. Can highly recommend the cooking course at 900 bhatt per person. As a 2 we did 8 dishes. Really fun and interesting 2 hours making dishes from the menu. And it tasted great. Come and enjoy.
Rob H — Google review
After eating here several times, we decided to do the cooking class with On. We really wanted a real cooking lesson, in an intimate and warm environment to learn as much as possible and soak it all in - and it's not always easy when you're vegan! On was super cute, fun and insightful! We learned a lot but above all we had lotsa fun, and the food was so so delicious! Thanks On for your knowledge and energy See you soon, Edo & Mario
Mario G — Google review
Best meal I had in Thailand! I had the curry fried rice at On’s Thai Issan, and it was the best dish of my whole trip. I am not even vegan, but the flavors were just perfect — rich, tasty, and spicy enough. The place is small and cozy, and the people are really friendly. If you're in Kanchanaburi, this spot is a must-try. Great food, great vibe!
Mohammed F — Google review
When I went here I was eating the same food since a month and my mouth went in ecstasy for the entire night. Wow. Even if I'm a no-spicy person, I tried the Massaman curry and I loved it. My face was burning but I was still eating, such a great taste. Another good thing is the pineapple shake and the papaya salad is super fresh! The staff is kind and funny, we danced together and made a lot of videos. The service is a it slow but I appreciated the calm atmosphere. They don't run, the cook with love. Thank you so much, see you next time♥️

Restaurant
Keeree Mantra Kanchanaburi is a top dining destination in Kanchanaburi, offering traditional Thai cuisine in a picturesque natural setting. The restaurant's expansive open-air layout provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lake. Signature dishes like coconut milk fish curry and pineapple fried rice are highly recommended. Adjacent to the restaurant is Village Farm To Cafe, a modern wooden cafe with mountain views and delectable treats like melon cream chocolate bun and green melon frozen yogurt.
Had a wonderful lunch today at Keeree Mantra Restaurant. The view was stunning and the atmosphere was truly relaxing. The restroom was clean, and the staff were polite and provided excellent service. This place is also perfect for hosting events or even weddings. Most importantly, every dish was fresh, clean, and absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!

Large area, great view and lots of seats and tables both indoor with AC and outdoor. Great place for family, friends, couple or work trip. Plenty of parking. Cafe is spacious and serves variety of drinks and cakes. Great food with good taste.
Thitikan K — Google review
Tucked in the middle of nowhere, this restaurant is highly recommended if you are nearby. The food was authentic and tasted really good. And the place is huge! Pineapple rice had a special spice added to it. The cabbage although looked simple, it was well seasoned. The fried veggie was served with a really good unique sauce. The otah was out of the world. Only wish the fish was in the middle of the pot rather than the bottom. The coconut lime seafood soup was more sour unlike the usual milk coconut base. The river snail with veggies was also good. The curry had a spicy punch to it. Dessert was preserved mango which is apparently very hard to find even in Thailand!

Absolutely amazing Thai food and service! The staff really made a difference — warm, attentive, and so friendly, they made our dinner extra special. Me and my parents had such an enjoyable evening at this beautiful restaurant. The surroundings are spacious, with lots of greenery, giving it a calm and relaxing vibe. You must try the fried fish — it’s so good, crispy on the outside, tender inside, and packed with flavour. Definitely a place I’d love to come back to!

Great spot for authentic Thai food in Kanchanaburi. This is in the same family of Keeree Tara River Kwai restaurant. We had Tom Yum Kung, fried snakehead fish with sour mango sauce, Khao Pad Kung, and fried spring rolls—all delicious and up to standard. The restaurant is huge, with a beautiful garden and an amazing mountain view. Service was excellent, and the place is super clean—you can tell they take hygiene seriously, even in the bathrooms. Plus, it’s reasonably priced—1,800 baht for two adults and two older kids. Highly recommended.

When in Kanchanaburi, a visit to the local night bazaars is a must. The JJ Night Market near the railroad station is a lively shopping spot divided into food and clothing stalls, offering affordable prices and delicious local cuisine. While smaller than those in bigger cities, it's still worth exploring for great deals on various items.
By far the best market in Kanchanaburi. Definitely worth a look at the food options.

Probably the night market with the largest offering in kanchanaburi. Love how most stalls offer small servings, so u can leave your stomach to try different foods. Be careful not to over-order as the temptations are real!
Gary C — Google review
Great night market. Very convenient if you are staying in the River Kwai road area. On rainy nights the vendors may pack up early so plan accordingly. Pro tips: there is a Hoy Tod seller towards the back left corner that makes delicious food as well as a Laarb seller in the middle left. The sellers form a corridor that causes you to go around like a maze, I recommend that you do an entire lap and look at everything and then double back and make your purchases. Then if there is anything else you need you can hit seben right across the street. I go to this JJ market every time I visit Kanchanaburi now!
Eric R — Google review
Great place to look at food or clothes stalls . There is many to look at and choose from it was a good place to visit
Joseph O — Google review
Nice market. There is nowhere to sit, and no bin, everyone piles trash up on the sidewalk. Personally I find it overstimulating because it’s very busy and impossible to rest. The children’s play area is great tho, 30 baht for 20 mins on the bouncy castle and trampolines and you can buy and paint plaster figurines. Also if you get some food and drinks before you take your kids there, you can sit down and eat at the kids painting table. Theres even a small garbage bin there! My daughter left her sandals there and we came back the next day and they were still there. The massages are outside of the market stalls, to the far left, if your facing into the market from the street. 30 mins for 100 baht and it was incredible. Also there are toilet there, you have to pay 3 baht in small coins into a turnstile, but the toilets are very clean, there a woman in there with a sewing machine who will mind your stuff
Laura F — Google review
Such a good night market, there's almost anything for everyone. Too bad today is raining. You can get lots of great food, for almost every palate and every taste. Also the non food item stalls are a plenty... Will try come back if there is no rain. Really enjoyed my short time visiting.
Jonathan “ — Google review
Great food 😅 just make sure to leave some space until you completely done in the food area, some really nice tasty desserts and very very cheap. Head through a little earlier than when it's dark. I went late the night before and there wasn't as much food stalls as there was tonight.

Excellent! Lovely place, we sat by the river and there's lovely fairy lights and bug spray. We had morning glory (this is a given for every meal for us in thailand) and i had the Kaeng Liang Shrimp soup mild, which was still quite spicy but very tasty - just like i like it! My partner had the chicken steak and she did thoroughly enjoy it! Banana and coconut milk is delicious, we tried as curious
