Skogen Kitchen

Mentioned on

$$$$expensive
Restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Custer, Skogen Kitchen is a delightful eatery that embodies the essence of American comfort food. With a menu that ranges from hearty breakfast classics to savory steak dishes and indulgent desserts, this laid-back spot has something for everyone. Originally inspired by an earlier breakfast concept, Skogen Kitchen now focuses on dinner service, showcasing gourmet cuisine crafted by a chef with impressive national experience.
My husband and I travel around the US, and have dined in restaurants all over the nation. Skogen Kitchen is definitely one of our favorites. This is our second time eating here, and we can't wait to return. We are especially delighted that the menu is seed oil free! We ordered a bottle of reasonably-priced Napa Valley cab, several appetizers (gazpacho, octopus, steam buns, foie gras and lobster linguine), the duck confit entree and two desserts. We were blown away by everything! Our server, Yevhenii, was attentive, knowledgeable and made great recommendations. The restaurant has somewhat limited seating, so plan ahead and make a reservation. Don't miss the opportunity to dine at Skogen during your visit to the Black Hills. Highly recommended!
Peggy B — Google review
This place has a great menu with some interesting choices. I also want to shout out the fantastic hostess who worked her magic to bump our reservation up early and our waitress, Destiny, who was so great. We got the carrot ginger soup which was very good. The endive salad was a great idea, but it was overdressed and pretty vinegar-forward for our tastes. My father got the halibut, which was excellent, but the absolute standout was the goat cheese and beet ravioli. It was beautiful to look at and every bite, from first to last was incredible!
Missy S — Google review
Wonderful and unexpected restaurant in Custer! We were very happy with everything ordered, and this was by far the best meal had on our 12 day trip through both of the Dakota’s. If you are a foodie, you will love it! I had a delicious cream of asparagus soup, and the risotto with English peas and morels was divine. Make reservations, you won’t want to miss this place!
Monica K — Google review
The favorites: risotto and roasted octopus. I’ve been here twice, got both dishes again! The risotto was saltier the second time around, but still very good. I really enjoy the dates in the octopus dish.
D. O — Google review
Was in the area for a birthday celebration, and decided on this place. Everything was absolutely amazing, from the friendly staff, fantastic service, and exceptional food. Everything looked really good, we chose the Fillet Mignon and the Salmon, along with a starter of roasted peppers, walnuts, goat cheese. Definetly recommended!
Brian M — Google review
Wow, amazing! The four of us enjoyed our meals. The au gratin spuds and the sauce over my fillet was stellar. My wife loved the risotto and her parents munched up the halibut. $215 well spent.
Swanny1016 — Google review
The food was as incredible as everyone else has stated! I am still craving the steam buns and octopus apps. Service was top notch! We will be back for every trip back to the hills.
Sarah S — Google review
What a lovely find in Custer! The food was delicious, definently the very best filet I have ever had. The prices are high, but worth every penny. Be prepared for a delightful experience from start to finish. Reservations are highly recommended! I made ours for a table of 6 two months in advance. The place is small and cozy.

Fantastic museum! So much information and displays. I could have spent all day here. If you love history, go. If you love looking at displays, go. There's just so much to keep you interested and engaged. For the kids (and kids at heart like me), look for the elf doors. Just go, it is really fantastic!!
Regina W — Google review
Fabulous museum! We were pleasantly surprised by all there was to see!!
Lauren G — Google review
Highly recommend this museum. Great history of the area and friendly staff. There are three floors and an outside display area. It very close to all the other activities in Custer. I was in town as part of Operation Black Hills Cabin. Thank you for supporting their program and for supporting wounded veterans.
Matthew S — Google review
Awesome museum! Honestly didn't think it would have so much information about Custer! Super interesting history of the city. Definitely kid friendly, the kids can do a scavenger hunt too. People should really see this museum while in Custer.
Dayana S — Google review
3 stories and has an outside portion, they have some very cool things in here, I don't want to spoil it for y'all but it is awesome! A museum i actually liked for once!
Tyler H — Google review
They are now open for the summer season ! Yay! I was excited for this and it was so cool to see stuff! Decent admission prices is a bonus. They have alot of stuff on early pioneers. Lots of stuff on local tribes, with native things actually marked as by specific tribes! Displays on logging, mining, taxidermy, government etc. I thought it was cool how detailed they are on the history of the artifacts. You can tell alot of work has gone into preserving this place. Yes, they do indeed have General Custers rifle.
Kitkat — Google review
It was full of historical items that you won't see anywhere else. It is a self guided tour, and don't miss the jail cell downstairs. They do have an elevator you can use.
Mitzi L — Google review
Excellent museum. Possibly the best value in our vist to the Black Hills. Don't miss it.

We just wanted to thank you CUSTER SD for a great week of fun. Your entire community treats tourists with respect and very friendly. Wonderful restaurants, Oh.. and PIE - Purple Pie Place, and Adventure Rentals are a few highlights. Be proud of "home" and thank you for sharing your spirit with us.

Folks were very friendly and helpful to help me find the right gifts
Lynn T — Google review
Fantastic place to stop and find information about the area. Fred was a wealth of information and so helpful. Highly recommend.
Brian T — Google review
I really appreciate the Chamber of Commerce having a level 2 charging station. On a trip from Rushmore back to Denver it gave us a chance to top up a bit before heading on to Scotts Bluff for our next charging stop. We grabbed some breakfast in town and shopped for some souvenirs while we waited. Staff was super friendly. It would be great if one day they would add level 3 chargers, but the top up was greatly appreciated regardless.
Eric B — Google review
If you are here for the Mickelson Trail, this is your place for swag! The staff here are very supportive of the Trail community, and cyclists… they seem to recognize that we will DRIVE for 2-3 days, just so that we can ride our favorite bikes for 30 miles or so on a particular trail!
J B — Google review
We arrived about a half hour before closing. The staff were friendly and helpful. Although the lady working didn't have all the answers to our questions she was able to direct us to the agency who did. We are boondockers and needed to find a place to set up for the night. We were given good information as to were to stay until we could visit the forest service the next morning.
Jeri C — Google review
We stopped in to get some maps and information. We were immediately approached by Fred who was fantastic. He had so much information and knowledge and a great sense of humor. Thanks Fred, you definitely made our stay an adventure!
Rebecca L — Google review
Great place to stop and get info on the area that you don’t find in the brochures. The man working there was very kind, knew a lot about the area and provided tons of great tips for my cycling and camping adventure. Much appreciated!!!

Restaurant
Located in the heart of Custer, South Dakota, The Custer Beacon is a popular bar and restaurant that perfectly captures the essence of the region. It offers a vibrant atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a diverse menu featuring local flavors and unique dishes. In addition to being a great dining spot, it also serves as an entertainment venue with live music performances by touring and local musicians. The cozy setting with comfortable couches and wooden tables makes it an ideal place to unwind while enjoying some local tunes.
Came here with the dog who was so hot from hiking and he could come inside. The staff was so nice to him and gave him milk bones. The pull pork sandwich was really good and they had musical bingo as well. This is definitely the spot in Custer 🙏
Bradley N — Google review
We had a fantastic meal here - it was surprisingly the best meal we had on our trip and it was also one of the cheapest. The positives: the staff was great, the nachos were amazing, the huckleberry ice cream was surprisingly good, and the atmosphere was awesome - very chill and laid back. The negatives: the $6 margaritas are not freshly made it was straight from a premix. Maybe I should have known based on the price, but it's definitely not what I expected from a bar. The lime one was decent, but the strawberry was so terrible I ended up just shooting back so I wouldn't have to taste it. The cardamom pineapple cake i had didn't have a very good crumb and was kind of cornbread-y. The parmesan garlic wings weren't terrible, but they weren't what my daughter was expecting due to the strong smoky flavor so we didn't end up eating them.
CJ — Google review
Great vibe. Atmosphere, super cool if you enjoy meeting new people sitting around a crackling fire. Live bands, tasty food and beverages.
Michelle F — Google review
Staying in Custer for a week and this was the first place we landed once settling our RVs. Tons of tables, large beverage selection including local beers, wine, NA, and more. Decent pub fare. We happened upon bingo night, which is a fantastic night to come. Great energy and atmosphere. $1 per round and you could win hundreds per round (or $1k-$2k jackpots). Dog friendly! Patio seating, too. Right off the Mickelson Trail.
Teresa P — Google review
This place is amazing! I love that it is family oriented. They have a fire pit and corn hole outside, with lots of picnic tables to sit at. They also have a cabinet full of card and board games. The food was so good. I had the Gyro and the chicken was cooked to perfection. We were visiting from MO and thought we would try this place out. It did not disappoint. There is a huge bar, and a stage where live music was playing. I would also try the peach tea wheat beer, it was delicious! The experience was one of a kind. I wish we had some place like this back home.
Kristina J — Google review
We had a blast playing bingo and the food was amazing!! Our dog was welcome, which was a plus!!
Passionate P — Google review
What a great place. Sad that we only discovered it at the end of our time in Custer. Otherwise we would be repeat customers. Loved the variety of seating options - indoors, outdoors, tables, couches, etc. Ideal venue for coming in just to watch the band or having a bite to eat. Great beer and wine selection and the food was fantastic. If you are in Custer for a few days or a few weeks check out the event schedule and make a point of checking this place out. You won't regret it!
Debbie S — Google review
We love coming to this place for weekly bingo. The staff is very efficient and friendly. The food is very good and is reasonably priced. There is a lot of beer and wine to select from. I also like the trivia. Any event here would be a great evening.

Folks were very nice and the food was hot and tasty and the craft beers was excellent! Very Historic town. The baked goods were absolutely delicious! Try the burgers and garlic cheese curds!
Matthewseven13 — Google review
Located in beautiful Custer you’ll find this seemingly small restaurant and then upon entering are met with a plethora of seats in the front and back area. Don’t have time to dine in? No problem! One pastry will feed a family of four. Check it out for yourself. Food was great, service was great, they have tap to pay option as well as regular card terminals and they take cash.
Chris M — Google review
We stopped in for donuts and loved them! The staff were friendly and funny! Encouraging us to try them all (which was tempting). Even the other guests were recommending donuts. They were some of the best raised donuts we’ve had in a long time. So fresh and squishy-just like I like them! My husband for carrot cake and the berry cheesecake bar. So good! We are going back tomorrow for more!
Nikki B — Google review
We had breakfast on a Friday morning here. The food was delicious and the servings were a good size. The staff were friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is cozy. The selection of baked goods was great. We definitely recommend!
Denise — Google review
This place was wonderful! Clean, upbeat, great atmosphere. Our waitress, Lauren was also amazing! Funny, fast, attentive, engaging! We will definitely be back!
Kandi H — Google review
Welcoming and friendly service. Varied menu but we had spies some delicious looking pecan rolls on display and that’s what we ordered with our coffee. They were even more delicious than they looked!
Catherine S — Google review
Lorae was our server. She was great and made us feel welcome. Got there just on time before breakfast ended. My breakfast burrito was delicious. The coffee was good too!

We had Buffalo burgers that were top notch! And the price was very reasonable. Nice atmosphere. Great service. And close to almost everything you came to the area to see.!

Big Rock Park

Mentioned on
1 list
Park
Big Rock Park is a sprawling naturalistic park in Custer, South Dakota, covering 73 acres of land. It boasts extensive hiking trails and the prominent Pagent Hills, which offer stunning panoramic views of the area. The summit provides an awe-inspiring vantage point, although the ascent can be challenging for some due to its steep incline. The well-marked trails are shaded and teeming with wildlife, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts.
We hiked to top for sunset. When we got up there we saw there was a road n we wouldn’t have had to climb the 200 steps. I even googled to see if we could drive up. There’s not specific parked lot. But there was a car parked in side of road
Kimberly H — Google review
We did the hike up to the top of the park. The trail was was well marked and for the most part was shaded. It took us under an hour to make it to the top. At the top of the hike, there was a staircase and observation platform from which to have a very good view from.
Brian S — Google review
Free clean trail beautiful scenery and views .lots of wildlife, trails and shade. We did not climb to the top as little one only made it halfway but it was a good hike nonetheless we will definitely go back next time we are in town.
Jennifer P — Google review
A bit off the beaten path, the summit features awesome views of the area. Be forewarned, at the trailhead it’s a mile to the observation area ... it’s a mile STRAIGHT UP, or feels like it at times! Still, it’s worth the climb, and a real shame that so many folks may miss this in favor of more fake, touristy options.
Mark D — Google review
This is a quick (20 min) hike for an amazing view. We have done this hike for both sunrise and sunset. If you venture just 300 feet further west, you can climb up to the CUSTER sign.
Doug B — Google review
The view could have been better it was super foggy so it wasn't as pretty but still pretty
Joshua W — Google review
Nicely do e stairs to gain access to the viewing platform. The platform is relatively small. View is just OK for the effort to get up there.
Jeff S — Google review
Great views and hike. Very fun frisbee golf!

Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company is a laid-back brewpub with a relaxed atmosphere, offering a variety of craft beers and delicious pub food. It's a great spot to unwind after exploring nearby attractions like Wind Cave, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and the Badlands. The taproom welcomes dogs inside and on the patio, making it an ideal stop for pet owners. Visitors can enjoy their meal on the deck while savoring house and guest craft beers.
Set in the small mountain town of CusterSD, this brewery offers a great line of custom brewed beer. Everything from an American Lager to Amber to a chili chocolate porter. There is even a full bar with a good variety of liquor and wine. Food was outstanding! We had the beer cheese pretzel appetizer. Then the American burger ( The Washington) comes in beef, bison, or elk. I had the bison and it was delicious! My wife had the Avocado spinach chicken wrap. The Rooster Tail Amber was so good! I would come here again and recommend it. Service was very good with lots of servers and staff buzzing about. Note, you should park behind the restaurant not the street side. This is where the main entrance is.
Dave D — Google review
Nice large indoor/outdoor craft brewery and restaurant. Beer was really good. We only tried the hummus. It was a bit too thick and dry for our taste but we really just came for a beer. If you are looking for Pounding Fathers Restaurant. It is upstairs inside this place . I was told it’s a steak place
Terri G — Google review
Disappointed. Off the bat, the menu prices they show online are lower than actual by $3-$7 per entree. That is unacceptable. The atmosphere is bar and prices are high end. The saffron rice and rice pilaf were not good. The corn was fine. The asparagus and mashed potatoes were really good. The walleye and quail were ok but not great. The kriek is not very good, the apricot-peach sour was better. The server was slow, and on his phone a lot. He took my son’s sprite to refill and never returned with any more.
Jay F — Google review
Great overall service. We stopped for an early dinner and sat in the back patio area. Great atmosphere and service. The food really stood out. We ordered wings, a couple burgers and the prime rib sliders. All the food was excellent! The homemade fries are uniquely cut, super crispy outside and soft inside. We also got a couple of IPAs also very good. Definitely recommend stopping if you are in the area!
Nikki S — Google review
Food was decent… nothing to right home about. I had the Bison Burger… but the highlight was the Fries. Had the flight. Had high hopes for the Bison Snot (I love oatmeal stouts), but it was “fine” at best. I enjoyed the Pils and Lager the most (but that might be a reflection of where I am in life as well). Wouldn’t mind coming back just for the atmosphere and cool logo :)
Mark J — Google review
Amazing brewery and the food is even better. Aside from the normal burgers, the pizza choices are great, and a nice selection of Japanese, Indonesian, and Indian dishes that you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Great beer selection of IPAs, Amber's, sprouts, wheat beer, and pilsners with a ton of flavor.
Brandon D — Google review
7/20/25 Loved the nachos! I parked in the large back parking lot. Many good beers on tap. Choices for seating are inside or outside on covered porch or on the lawn.
Through G — Google review
If you can stay and experience their Sunday morning buffet it's a must! For around $20/person it's a killer deal! The food is diverse and exceptionally seasoned with an omelette station. The restaurant has an open air concept and a very warm and friendly vibe. The crew took care of us like VIP customers, someone came in with their dogs, they were polite and sat at a far table on the sidewalk and the staff made a point to take care of the dog too! This will be a breakfast stop every time we visit.

Nestled in the heart of Custer, The Custer Wolf is a warm and inviting eatery that serves up hearty American pub fare alongside an impressive selection of craft beers. Named after a legendary wolf from the 1920s, this local gem boasts a cozy atmosphere adorned with unique decor, including a wall dedicated to beer steins belonging to regular patrons.
Everything about The Custer Wolf was amazing. We had the fried green beans as a starter and they were light and crisp with a very good dipping sauces. For the main courses, I had the salmon and my wife had the flatbread taco, which was the special of the day. Finally, we split a chocolate mousse and it was fantastic. We’re from Ohio and we really wish someday to return. It was a great stop!
Andy K — Google review
Nice place! Offers inside and outside seating. Food was extremely fresh and hot. We got the Fish & Chips (comes with an amazing tartar sauce) and the Chicken Tenders with Potato Smashers. Very hefty serving sizes and well worth the money. Menu was not as big as I had hoped for, but it definitely made the decisions easier. Service was very attentive.
Kimberly B — Google review
The food was great overall! The salad dressing stood out—very good and clearly homemade. The dessert with caramelized bacon wasn’t quite to my taste, but my son really enjoyed it. My husband absolutely loved the fish and chips, especially the tartar sauce. What truly made the experience special was the service. The staff were outstanding—friendly, attentive, and welcoming. They really make this place a wonderful one!
Fabiana C — Google review
Very comfortable place to take a break from the heat and the tourist mobs and to enjoy some tasty pub grub and outstanding craft beer. The prices are reasonable, the service is friendly and fast, and there is ample seating outside on a shaded patio and inside at the dining room or at the bar. The craft beers are on tap from Black Tooth Brewing. The parking on the street in front of the restaurant is usually full, but it is easy to find a spot elsewhere within less than a block’s walk to the place.
Mojovoyager — Google review
Husband came for the fish and chips and he was very happy with the meal. I had the beet salad and asked for no cheese to make it vegan, it was excellent. We also enjoyed the on tap brew, hubby had the Jeremiah Johnson Scotch Ale and I had Grain Belt Lager, also excellent. Service was outstanding, thank you Jason for your attentive and friendly manner.
Cynthia A — Google review
A tasty surprise in Custer—don’t skip the smashed potatoes 🐺 What a great lunch stop! I had the smoked trout BLT, and wow—if cold-smoked salmon and magic had a baby, this would be it. Seriously, try it. My fiancée had the burger, which hit all the right notes, but the real MVP? The smashed potatoes. Golden, crispy perfection. If you skip them, you’ve made a terrible life choice. Service was on the slower side, but they seemed slammed, and let’s be real—this place probably deals with a rotating cast of hangry tourists all day. Props to the staff for holding it together. Bottom line: amazing food, a little patience required, but totally worth the stop.
Eric C — Google review
Had a 40 minute wait for a table (not that there was much open in town) but it was well worth it. Staff were super friendly and the menu was reasonably priced. Extensive selection of beers and great vegetarian alternatives. Will be back!

Friendly. Delicious smoked trout BLT. Went extremely well with the Josh Chardonnay (Napa). The Moose Drool brown ale was new to me, but tasted good and cold

Beautiful landscapes! Really recommend if you want to see wildlife. The park is huge, there’re campings, leisure areas with picnic tables and clean restrooms. It’s all dog friendly, meaning the dogs are welcome on the trails! Driving inside the park is a delight!! The ticket to the park is 25$ and gives you 7 days to explore it.

Absolutely Incredible - Beautiful Area ! There is greater beauty around every turn. I did Not schedule enough time here & will certainly be back. Just Love the Bison/Buffalo & adorable Burro/Mules. Remember to stay Safe! They are Not pets. Enjoy the beauty
Jeannine U — Google review
Custer State Park completely blew me away — it’s truly one of the most beautiful and well-kept parks I’ve ever visited, even compared to many national parks! The scenery is stunning at every turn, from the rolling prairies to the dramatic granite spires and crystal-clear lakes. Driving through the park feels like stepping into a postcard. We saw bison, pronghorns, burros, and deer up close — it was magical. The roads and trails are in great condition, everything is spotless, and it’s so easy to get around. The staff and rangers are friendly and really care about the park, which makes the experience even better. The Visitor Center is excellent and adds so much to the visit — very informative, modern, and beautifully done. Whether you’re into wildlife, photography, or just peaceful scenic drives, Custer State Park is a place you’ll never forget. I can’t wait to come back.
Nan K — Google review
This park is spectacular, the needles was so fun to experience. Loved we came in the fall the colors were pretty. Wildlife loop was hard to find so look for the Bison center, the round up had happened the weekend before so they were all there getting checked. The burrows made my day, they are just past the bison center.
Rita D — Google review
The park was awesome and had amazing views. There is so much to do. We lost count on how many times we said wow! Started on the Needles highway, did the wildlife loop and saw a herd of Buffalo and finished up on Iron Mountain Road. Had a great lunch The Legion Lodge. The potato salad was the best we ever had in a restaurant. Next time will check out the lakes and more of the park.
Patricia B — Google review
Highly highly recommend going to Custer! Plan a few days though, so much to see and do! We lucked out and were there in time for the Annual Buffalo Roundup which was so cool to see,.def do that if you're there at the end of Sept. Other highlights are the Needles Highway, Mt. Coolidge Lookout, Sylvan Lake and the Wildlife Loop! We camped just outside but there looked to be some great camping and lodging in the park too!

Service was great, food was phenomenal. Wife and I got the Tatanka Chislic to share, the sauce that came with it was delicious. I had the Bull Melt, replaced Angus for bison, it was one of the juiciest sandwiches I've ever had, fries were fresh, and crispy as well. No complaints from either of us!

Chose to eat here based on reviews and husband’s choice since it was his birthday. Overheard another table ask about the lunch Reuben, so inquired as well. And they were able to make it for me for dinner, which was awesome! We ordered the kids cheeseburger and chicken tenders. For a whopping $12 each! Which is crazy to me on price, but even more crazier when it came out and I saw what it was. The fries had no flavor and tasted like oil/freezer and my daughter didn’t care for the tenders. The two tenders she got 🤣 with a huge side of fries. For $12 for a kids meal I would have hoped for bigger/better… The Reuben was just okay, I was hoping for a little more toasted as it was really soft and fell apart. My husband ordered the Sodak buffalo and said it was okay, the fries were burnt but still better tasting than the other fries. I’m hoping we were just there on an off night, but I wouldn’t recommend it. $65 for a mediocre meal…

The first time trying buffalo and it was great, the chislic itself was very tasty but the house sauce had way too much of a vinegar taste for me personally. Was also not a fan of the garlic Parmesan fries as they were just doused in Parmesan cheese. The buffalo melt and the buffalo burger however were delicious, and the patty was cooked nicely at a medium rare. The veggies were fresh on the burger, but the side of coleslaw was not good and tasted like it was sitting out for a while. Overall a great experience if you want to try some buffalo.

Ate here twice while visiting. Restaurant is large and accommodating, although a bit loud and we were upstairs both times. The sliders and chicken salad were both good. Prices were a little high in my opinion. Overall, a good experience and we would return.

We ordered the fish tacos, chicken burrito, beef burritos, nachos, and kids menu mac n cheese. These servings are huge and we could have split the burritos between 2 people. The food was good, our server was on top of filling our water and clearing our table. The sauces can be a bit spicy, but I asked for mine on the side.

Great experience, and the food was amazing! Came here with my 3 kids (ages 3, 7 and 9) and my parents from France 🇫🇷 and we all absolutely loved the food! All 3 adults got the Buffalo steak tips and OMG so delicious! I highly recommend, worth every Penny. Every one was super nice, from the Lady who sat us, to the waiter and manager. We will definitely come back next time we are in town. We got served quickly too!

After visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial, we were ready for something local and memorable. We made the short drive to Custer and ended up at the Buglin’ Bull. It was exactly what we were hoping for. The bison chislic 🦬 was outstanding. Crispy on the outside, tender inside, full of flavor, and served piping hot. It paired perfectly with the garlic parmesan fries. My wife had the Bull Melt and a Mint Collins, and both were excellent. The service was incredibly fast. We were seated right away and had our food within about fifteen minutes. Being there on the 4th of July with all the energy in town made it even more fun. Great food, great service, and a perfect stop after a long day of exploring.

Restaurant
Black Hills Burger & Pizza Co. is a popular spot known for its creative burgers, including vegetarian options, served in a modern and cheerful setting. The restaurant has gained an excellent reputation for its focus on simple, fresh, and affordable food. Housed in a renovated downtown building with exposed brick walls and stained-glass accents, the small establishment often experiences long waits due to its limited hours and high demand.
Our family loved this place! You seat yourself and order at the counter… you can also order online! It was busy but the staffed worked hard to clear tables and seat people that were waiting! We ordered the terminator with no sausage and the cheese curds! So good!!

Family of 7 stopped in for dinner after a day of hiking. We were hungry! Got some Classic burgers, one of them bison, a Hot Granny burger (pictured), and the Betty White Pizza (pictured). We liked it all very much! Fries were just ok-a little underwhelming and bland. The pizza was good, but a bit rich to eat alone (to be expected with the white sauce). The burgers were very good, and the absolute winner was the Hot Granny burger. Highly recommend that if you’re interested in flavors beyond the typical!

Black Hills Burger & Pizza Co. – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We stopped in and tried the pizzas 🍕 — and wow, amazing! I had the “Cheesy Cheesy” pizza 🧀🧀 — cut into perfect little squares so I could dip each one into the marinara 🍅. The cheese stretch was next-level, gooey pulls that make you smile every time 😋. Garlic sauce had outstanding flavor, and the crust hit that sweet spot: doughy inside, crispy on the outside. Honestly, I’d rank this in my Top 3 pizzas I’ve ever had, hands down. Like most great pizzas, it’s best eaten hot right out of the oven 🔥 — which is exactly how they served it. I washed it down with a Pepsi 🥤 (though I’ll always be a Coke guy 😉). My wife went with the Vegetarian pizza 🥦🍅 on a cauliflower crust and absolutely loved it. The sauce had great flavor, there was a generous amount of veggies (no skimping here), and the crust was soft and enjoyable — none of that rock-hard cauliflower base you often get elsewhere. • 🧀 Cheesy Cheesy Pizza – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (square cut + marinara dipping heaven) • 🥦🍅 Vegetarian w/ Cauliflower Crust – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (flavorful sauce, plenty of veggies, soft crust) • 🥫 Garlic Sauce – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 🪑 Atmosphere – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (fun and welcoming) • 🤝 Service – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (we came close to closing and they still took care of us without rushing us — much appreciated 🙏) Overall, this place nails it. Between the flavor, variety, and atmosphere, Black Hills Burger & Pizza Co. is a must-stop and easily one of the best pizza experiences I’ve ever had. ✅

One of the best burgers we’ve ever had, we came here for lunch ordered the hot granny and the fun guy, I added sautéed mushrooms to hot granny and hubby added red onions to the fun guy, both were delicious. Burgers were very juicy and tasty. We also ordered a build our own pizza with cauliflower crust for dinner, it was really good as well. Staff were nice and friendly. Everything was great!

Amazing food! Owner was so friendly. Thai pizza was beyond impressive! I wish we had pictures from before! ** So good we went back the next day… burgers were as great as the pizza! Took pictures today! If you are in Custer, or even close by, this is a must!! Mr and Mrs Pizza 🍕. Bacon blue burger 🍔 Hot honey burger so good best and unique must try!!!!🍯 the heat was perfectly balanced! Do yourself a favor and just try this place.

Stopped here on a bike packing trip on the Mickelson. The food was delicious! One of the most balanced flavor burgers I have ever had (I got the hot granny buffalo burger). And the fries were perfection! Perfectly salted and crunchy. Definitely worth the stop!

The Big and Juicy Buffalo burger was amazing. I ate it too fast so missed the picture. The pizza was also a delight. Would recommend if you are passing through Custer to make it a food stop.
Damion S — Google review
This was our favorite burger joint in the Black Hills until this year when they changed to a pizza place, much to our disappointment. There used to be a wait to get a table. We decided we needed to try it and see how it compared. We walked right in and had our choice of tables. A lot of their pizzas have jalapeños or pickled jalapeños on them. Fair warning, the pickled jalapeños are just as hot as the regular ones, unless they put the wrong ones on my pizza. I can’t complain about the pizza, besides the jalapeños, the pizza was pretty good. We got the weekly special of the Spicy Supreme (jalapeños on the side), Hawaiian (pickled jalapeños were HOT) and the bacon cheeseburger pizza. The fried pickles were excellent. I’m sad to say, it just didn’t come close to their bison burgers. I wish them luck in their new business venture. UPDATE: Bison burgers are back!! I was thrilled to Google best bison burgers in the area and BHBPC popped up. We went there for lunch the next afternoon and I was so happy to have THE ABSOLUTE BEST BISON BURGER ever again! If you haven't been here for a bison burger, GO! NOW! What are you waiting for?? They are phenomenal!!

This family-operated establishment boasts a classic Midwest menu with a hint of Southwestern influence, making it a top choice for starting the day in Custer, SD. Folks were very nice and the food was hot and tasty and the craft beers was excellent! Very Historic town. The baked goods were absolutely delicious! Try the burgers and garlic cheese curds!

Sage Creek Grille is a simple blond-wood cafe in Southwestern South Dakota that offers Western American fare made with local produce, elk, buffalo, and beef. Visitors have enjoyed dishes like Jamaican Chicken Fricassee and Bourbon Street Cajun Fettuccine. The restaurant has been praised for its fine dining experience in a comfortable casual atmosphere, with delicious food comparable to that of New York City.
Excellent service. Astonishing food. Highly recommend trying the elk stuffed mushrooms and walleye cakes. Loved the atmosphere. Had the bison strip it was exquisite. Wife had the salmon linguine it was also to die for. Even the kids mac and cheese was excellent 👌. We will be back.

This is a very nice restaurant, with a more sophisticated menu than many places in Custer. Service was excellent and attentive. The kids' meals were well received and both the salmon and buffalo ribeye were wonderful. The vibe is still somewhat casual and the prices aren't cheap but are reasonable. The wine list was also very good. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a great meal.

Our host at Eagles Landing B&B recommended this restaurant and it was a great recommendation. The following d and service were excellent. Our server Everald was wonderful. The Walleye appetizer was mouth watering. I could have had a second serving of it. The flavors of the sauces were perfect. I had the salmon piccata and my husband has the chicken pot pie and both were so good. We went on a Tuesday night at 6:45pm. We did not need a reservation . Love the National Park past and present pictures they use for decorations by Paul Horsted.

The food is simply phenomenal. It’s unique and interesting and, and the same time, very solid comfort food. We have been a few times and all the dishes are fantastic. It’s hands down the best fish that I’ve ever had in my life (their Walleye dish). Their salads are also delicious, and a solid range of local beer to try. Then there is the dessert. Just 10/10 all around

State Game Lodge

Restaurant
Custer State Park Resort is a historic lodge built in the 1920s, offering grand rooms and modern hotel units, as well as cozy cabins and a fine-dining restaurant. Visitors can enjoy jeep safaris with excellent guides who lead them to witness herds of pronghorn sheep, buffalo, and prairie dogs roaming through the grounds.
Cabin was good. Couple bugs as one would expect. Was cool to see Buffalo right outside in the field next to the cabin! That's not why I'm writing this review though. The restaurant and service were wonderful. They graciously served us quite close to closing and we had wonderful meals. We ate here twice. Day 1: Chicken Florentine Pasta was DELIGHTFUL. I was a big fan and would recommend. Very excellent portion size as well which surprised me. Day 2: Rack of Lamb with Creamy Parmesan Polenta. Oh my goodness. It was perfect. And that polenta, goodness gracious was it wonderful. I would recommend this over all else.
Jared S — Google review
We just stopped here to eat on our way through the park. No wait or reservations on a Saturday night about 7. It's overpriced, but typical of a park lodge during peak season. We all had new York strip, which were pretty decent and tender. Came with potatoes, seasonal veggie, side salad and bread for $46 a person. The lodge is a really neat building and grounds, but not sure we'd eat here again just based on price alone.
Wyndi W — Google review
We visited the lodge off-season (early October) and had a good, affordable rate. The rooms were impeccably clean and had everything we needed, except WiFi. Now that I think about it, the TV was a little funky too — it felt like I was transported to the year 2006. But, hey — you’re not here to watch TV.

1920s historical lodge. Stopped in for lunch, did not stay there. Historical decor and information. Beautiful. Located in Custer State Park. Food was delicious. Buffet with salad fixings, soup, fruit, desserts and hot entrees or order sandwiches and burgers off menu. Service friendly and quick. Dining room large and comfortable. Highly recommend.

The resort is in Custer State Park and the drive is beautiful, up a curvy road with lots of wildlife at sun set. We drove from Mount Rushmore and it took us 45 minutes. Due to our late arrival, all resturants were closed! This is a resort you want to stay a few days and enjoy all they offer.

We spent 6 nights in the Creekside Cabin across the road from the State Game Lodge. Two families with 7 kids. The cabin was well maintained. The adjacent bunk house worked great for all the kids and the main cabin's two bedrooms were comfortable for the parents. Cabin was equipped with a gas grill and a fire ring with grate for charcoal grilling. Custer State Park is a great place. We canned and swam at Legion Lake and Sylvan Lake. Both are beautiful and have great swimming areas. Make sure to hit the visitor center to get the lay of park and history.

We recently stayed here for a wedding. We were over charged $85 for a take away crib that we did actually get (we brought a pack-n-play). Multiple phone calls have been made but we've basically been told they didn't care and won't refund our money.

We stopped for a beverage after driving on Needles Hwy. We enjoyed sitting on the porch. The gift shop had nice items and the restroom was clean. We will definitely consider staying here the next time we are in Custer State Park.

Blue Bell Lodge

Lodge
Restaurant
Blue Bell Lodge is a high-end accommodation option that offers rustic cabins with kitchen facilities, dining options, and various activities. The honeymoon cabin provides a cozy and quiet atmosphere with a king-sized bed and a fireplace. While the initial experience was marred by an unclean cabin, the staff's swift and gracious response turned things around. The on-site restaurant impressed with its delicious buffalo stew, meatloaf dinners, soup, and spinach artichoke dip.
Had lunch at the restaurant on 6/23/25, Chevy was our waitress and was a absolutely awesome! My wife had the rancher burger I had the eagles nest burger. Let me say 1st we travel a lot as we full time RV and eat out several times a week usually. These burgers were hands down quite possibly the absolute best burgers we've ever had. They were just perfect in every way! Chevy recommended the beef over the bison and man am I glad she did. Going back soon and I'll try to take pictures before we devour the burgers.

We stayed in one of the Rose Quartz cabins. Very nice cabin, clean and comfortable. The only issue was that online it looks as though there are limited cabins in a wilderness setting, in reality there is a large cluster of identical cabins. So it feels more like a campground than a wilderness experience. The location was perfect, we had booked the chuckwagon dinner and a horseback ride the next morning and were able to walk to both. I would say that the store at the lodge is mostly souvenirs and didn't offer much in the way of food, coffee, camping supplies etc. We didn't even see an option to buy firewood. They also don't open until 8 and were grumpy when we showed up at 7:57am. So if you have an early morning ride or hike and need something you are out of luck. All in all the cabins are beautiful and comfortable, but be aware that its a campground with limited services. Everything in the park shut down by 8pm and there were really no activities available after that point either. And no playground or areas like horseshoes or bags etc to be active as a family. I'd stay one night and move along again if we returned, just for the ease of access to the stable and hayride in Custer.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Blue Bell Lodge. It definitely made our visit to the Black Hills a fantastic experience. We stayed in a cabin and it was absolutely beautiful. Clean and beautifully decorated. Best of all the beds were extremely comfortable and our experience overall was fantastic. I also have to say that the restaurant was wonderful and the food was delicious. Every single employee that we came in contact with was absolutely wonderful, and we truly enjoyed the hayride and chuckwagon experience.

Our favorite lodge in Custer! Blue bell has the best staff- friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to go above and beyond to make your stay memorable! My husband and I got married here and the staff was so easy to work with!! I would recommend this place to anyone. I love that you can easily walk from your cabin to the c-store and restaurant. The restaurant is our favorite meal with homestyle menu. We come back here mutual ole times a year!

Loved the location. So quiet and beautiful. We had a bit of a hiccup with our cabin during our stay, and the staff was very responsive and went above and beyond to make it right. Better service than we have gotten at high end hotels 😏.
Susan K — Google review
Blue Bell is my go-to place when staying in Custer State Park. The cabins are extremely clean, nicely spaced apart to give you privacy and that in-the woods feeling, without feeling too isolated. Great location for visiting other areas in and around the park. We didn't go on the cookout ride this time, or horseback riding, but have done so in the past and would highly recommend both! And the staff is great, from making reservations to check-in. Thanks, Blue Bell for making our visit one we will always cherish!
Judy P — Google review
Been to Custer every year, finally decided to stay in the park. Blue bell cabins didnt dissapoint. The cabins are fare priced, updated but still have that old charm, clean and cozy. Cabins contained everything we needed, linens, towels, kitchen cutlery, etc. Each narrows cabin has its own firepit too. We also did a 1hr horseback trail ride and the chuck wagon dinner, I highly recommend both.
Amanda S — Google review
This review is specifically for horseback riding at Blue Bell. I booked a ride for 2 adults and 2 kids. Nowhere on the booking form or receipt does it say arrive 30 min early. My family showed up at 945 for 10a ride and they asked us to all sign waivers and get into the long line of people waiting to get their saddled horse. We got into line and we got on our horses, except one of the adults in my party. None of the guides said one of the adults wouldn’t ride; however, when I noticed my husband not getting a horse I asked the guide what was wrong. She said the front desk didn’t have him on the schedule. This was a pure lie because I had prepaid for him AND the front office girl made him sign a waiver. For some reason they just didn’t want to deal with getting my husband on a horse. Needless to say, by the time I realized he wasn’t going with us it was too late to tell the guide my kids and I didn’t want to ride. We had to go on the ride without my husband and my daughter was distraught. It was the first time she and my husband were brave enough to go on a horse guided trail ride. The customer experience was very negative and totally uncalled for.. they could have at least given us the option to all not go. When my husband went into the office to ask for a refund the manager was rude and said we were late and not getting a refund. We managed to get the refund after a long battle, but the office staff and HR lady I talked to later were still very rude in my opinion. They turned the problem around on the customer. Custer park activities are very expensive. I also never knew the rule was 30 min prior to ride, but still called when we driving into be courteous and tell them we’d be about 10 min late because of the weather and reduced visibility driving up mountain. In my opinion, they overbooked the ride and they used my courtesy call against us to not allow my husband on. All I wanted was to give us an option to either not ride or book a later ride so we could all go together. The moral of this story, poor customer service AND you better show up 30 min prior or you will be left with likely no refund and/or be left out of a tour with your group. I wouldn’t book again with this stable. The trail ride wasn’t even great in my opinion…it was just a loop around with basically no scenery. The most exciting thing we saw was a creek.

Sylvan Lake Lodge

Lodge
Restaurant
Sylvan Lake Lodge offers lakeside accommodations with modern rooms and rustic cabins, along with a seasonal fine dining restaurant. While some visitors found the food to be very good, others felt that the dining experience fell short of its aspirations for fine dining due to certain service and presentation aspects. However, many guests were captivated by the breathtaking views and enjoyed their meals, praising both the food quality and the scenic surroundings. The lodge's manager was also commended for his exceptional customer service.
Our stay at Sylvan Lake Lodge was just what we were looking for. This is a good location and the view was beautiful. Our stay was short, but we made the most of the scenic drives through the park and everything we saw was relatively close. We did have a wonderful breakfast. The food was delicious. We want to especially recognize Cameron, our waiter. He took a few minutes to take a picture of us right outside the lodge and we just want to say "thank you" to him.

Stellar location. Made dinner reservations then went to their lakeside location to rent a boat and paddle the lake. There was no one in the rental office and nobody inside could help us. We hiked around the lake and returned and after some time someone finally was able to help us. After our paddle we went to the lodge for dinner. The bar and area around the fireplace was very nice and many people were relaxing there. We were seated in the dining area and from the start it was clear that the servers moved at a very relaxed pace. Only one of the 3 we saw seemed to move with clear purpose. After our small plates arrived our server never checked back with us until our meals were obviously finished. The Buffalo Chislic we ordered was seemingly way overdone as the meat was very chewy and the breading/coating was very hard. I will say that the French fries served with it were the closest knock off of McDonalds French fries I’ve had. Dessert was tasty. We had high expectations of a historic lodge. The aesthetics were there but the food and service did not meet expectations.

This is a great place to stay if you're in the Black Hills area. It's about 1 minute away from Custer State Park. If you dine here, I highly recommend the Salmon and an Old Fashion from the bar. You won't regret it.

What a beautiful, quiet location right in Custer State Park! Due to having our dog with us, my husband and I booked a cabin for our honeymoon trip, and we were very pleased. We had a small issue with our cabin on the first night, called the front desk and they sent someone over right away, and even offered to move us if needed (didn't end up being necessary). The fireplace within our cabin was adorable and so warm! The food served in the main lodge was delicious, and each staff member was accommodating and kind. My only complaint was that the bathroom within the cabin was very small, and the shower was even smaller. However, this was not a deal breaker and we would happily stay here again!

Beautiful area. Stayed in a cabin which was great except no wifi or cell service. Wish that had been known ahead. Restaurant good on Friday but not great on Monday. It is located on a very windy road so we stayed on property at night.

We loved our stay at Sylan Lake Lodge. It was quiet and the scenery was absolutely beautiful. All of the staff was very friendly and our room was clean and cozy. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We will definitely plan to return!

Pillows were hard as a rock. Staff claimed rooms were unavailable to book for my parents, but when I called, they magically had rooms available. Extremely inflexible about providing us with an early check-in time, stating that they could call us day of, which was insane because that happened to be my wedding day and we did not have time for that. Rooms were also over-priced for the quality and friendliness of the booking staff.

Beautiful place with beautiful views. In the heart of Custer State Park. The chef in the restaurant at the lodge was absolutely amazing. He went above and beyond to meet my dietary restrictions. The food was excellent. We will be back! Highly recommend!!

Located in the heart of Rapid City, South Dakota, Rapid City Regional Airport is a bustling hub for travelers visiting the region's premier attractions such as Mt. Rushmore. The area offers a diverse array of experiences, from exploring historic towns like Deadwood and Custer to savoring a mix of culinary delights ranging from hip rooftop bars to Wild West-style barrooms serving native ingredients like bison and fry bread.
This is a great airport. Very clean and no frills. A 5 minute walk from the parking lot to your gate. Very friendly staff and clean toilets. They also have a groovy glass elevator in the main terminal. I wish all airports were this nice.

Sweet little airport. Getting around was easy. The place was clean. Would recommend, but then again, there aren’t any other options in town.

Small airport. Looks to be behind a farm field. Only one terminal with 7 gates. Flew Delta via Baltimore with a connection in Minneapolis for Sturgis 24. Bar & eatery available before you go through security. Omelet, home fries, & toast: $13 veggie & $15 ham & cheese. Food was a little overcooked, and the area smelled like cooking grease, but everything tasted Okay. The cashier was also the server, bartender, and cleaning tables. I felt bad that there was not more help. You can ask for complimentary ice water. Coffee costs $5.75 for 20 oz. No Free Refills! Outside tables available overlooking the surrounding mountains. Giftshop after you pass security. Also, a small food/drink area featuring Cinnabon that does accept Delta meal vouchers. Due to a plane delay in Minneapolis, we missed our connecting flight to Rapid City. Delta offered hotel and meal vouchers, but only certain vendors accept them, and they do expire, but are accepted at multiple airports. Always ask if the establishment honors them before you order!

It was fine. Short term parking was only 2 dollars. Easy in and out.

A small regional airport with limited amenities. Only 8 gates, so it gets crowded when busy. Not many places to get food or drinks. The luggage carousels and rental car areas are easy to find. TSA lines when leaving can be long and time consuming, so plan ahead if you're flying during summer/holiday season. For it's size, we thought it had a good layout and was easy to maneuver around.

The airport was neat and clean. Everyone was friendly and helpful. My checked bag was quick to appear in the baggage claim area. It was a short walk to the car rental area. What's not to like?

Due to flight cancellations, I ended up being re-routed through Rapid City Regional Airport in South Dakota. This was my first ever trip there, and I have never visited a smaller airport than here. It has a total of 6-gates. There is one restaurant and one shop. I needed some food, so I purchased a chicken club wraps that was actually pretty decent. The staff was understaffed and over worked although they did try to deal with everyone respectfully. The food there is extremely expensive like a major city airport where my sandwich and fries with drink was $24. I could not see who was a bartender so I could not get a drink which was why they lost a star. When it came time to boarding the flight it was relatively smooth, and I was in/out of the airport in 2 1/2 hours on schedule. I would suggest that you do not rely on this airport for food and that you bring your food with you. I made that mistake and I needed something to eat. Other than that, I would at that it was a relatively pleasant experience all-in-all.
