Island
Nature & Parks
Zamami Island is a serene destination with stunning white-sand beaches and crystal-clear aqua waters, perfect for activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. Divided into three communities, the island offers various stores and diving shops, particularly popular among young adults. The surrounding sea is a haven for divers of all levels due to its exceptional clarity. Accessible via regular and high-speed ferries from Naha City, Zamami Island is an ideal escape from city life.
I went for a whale watching tour with Nature Land, they can accommodate English-speaking guests. I was able to sign up for the 10am tour the moment I landed at the port. The tour lasted for 2 hours and I saw a few whales ^_^ Look out for the staff holding up signs!

Here’s the English translation of your review: ⸻ The island is very beautiful, and the nature is truly impressive. I recommend renting a scooter and exploring all the main spots — we managed to do it in 3 hours. However, if you’re staying here for a couple of days, be prepared that the island doesn’t really “wake up” until 11:00 AM. You won’t find any food before then, even if a place says it opens at 9:00 — it won’t be open. Restaurants don’t follow their Google-listed hours; they open whenever they feel like it. Also, keep in mind that there are only two stores on the island, and the selection of products is very limited. I gave two stars not to the island itself, but to the service on the island. People here don’t seem interested in working or making money from tourism.
Dasha D — Google review
The greatest snorkeling experience u can have! Ocean are very well preserved, full of coral reels and sea turtle! We stayed in kerama blue resort for 2 days. U can rent a scooter to mover around the island. There are so many different beautiful beaches. Also can do some hiking!
Chloe L — Google review
Zamami Island is a tropical paradise with crystal-clear waters and pristine white-sand beaches. It's the perfect place to relax, swim, snorkel, and kayak.
Tứ N — Google review
Zamami is an island just over an hour away from Naha, Okinawa by fast ferry . It has wonderful beaches and a few observatory where you can see the pretty islands nearby. A very special place where coral beaches has sand fine enough to walk on. A must do is swimming and snorkelling at Fukuzamami beach, a 2 Michelin star beach. Being from australia, i am hardly ever impressed with beaches overseas , but i am impressed with this beach. The water colour is an amazing blue and it changes often during the day !!! Tropical fish will come and check you out if you snorkel over the coral. Be careful not to step on sea cucumber and look for Nemo !
Hoa B — Google review
This is one of the most beautiful places I have seen in my life. I wish I'd had more time here. The ocean is clear, and the island greenery is so lush. There are so many beautiful sights and hiking trails. It's almost unreal. The entire island is walkable if you're up for it. The hills are daunting, but the views from the top are stunning. I cannot recommend this island enough. It's an easy ferry ride away from Naha.
B — Google review
Hands down one of the best islands ive been to in awhile. The water is pristine with beautiful beaches and many outlooks giving you once in a lifetime views of the Kerama Islands. I would highly suggest renting a scooter or bike and explore the island. There are many trails to coves and wild beaches as well. However, given its a national park, swimming should be only done at the beaches. Out of the two main beaches, Ama beach gives you upfront and personal with Sea Turtles! They come around high tide and feed on greens on the seafloor. They come as close to 20 feed from shore. Please keep in mind to not touch nor bother them and keep a good distance for them to freely swim. Also do not tread water wildly around them and startle them.
Jay V — Google review
THE most beautiful, clear and lovely beaches in the world are here! I visited AMA Beach and GAHI uninhabited island a 10 minute boat ride from Zamami port this July 2021 and was rewarded with glorious water but I must warn you no shade as both places are completely ( and luckily) totally undeveloped ! I think Zamami exists only for tourists, however with the Covid plague it offered few options for eating as many places were shut. I rented a bike for ¥3,000 for the day as bus services are sparse. A really wonderful day trip from Naha port and well worth it. I hope I can return between December and March when the humpback whales visit for breeding!

Furuzamami Beach

National reserve
Furuzamami Beach is a stunning white sandy beach with crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling and swimming among tropical fish and vibrant reefs. Accessible by a 20-minute walk from the Naha ferry or a convenient bus ride from the port, this beach offers rental shops for beach gear and snorkeling equipment.
Great beach for snorkeling, clear water and lots of fish even without being out of one depth. The beach itself is beautifully white, the coral isn't too sharp for feet. There are at least 3 life guards, and you can rent tuba, floating vest and other beach accessories at the entrance. From the pier, it's ~20 minutes on foot, half is climbing, half is descending, not worth renting a bike. Please note that there is no food near it.
Letay B — Google review
Great beach for snorkelling! Lots of fish near the shore and the water is so clear and refreshing! A 15-20 min walk from the pier that has one big uphill and downhill section but it is very easy to navigate to. There is also a public bus that takes you to the beach for a small fee that leaves near the pier.
Jeremy W — Google review
This is the very famous beach in Zamami. Even tho it’s quite touristic, density is not very high during August. A lot of snorkeling gear u can rent there. We did a bit of snorkeling ourselves! The big coral reel is very nearby the coast. U just have to swim couple of mins to reach there. Water is extremely clear, a lot of fishes swimming under the water! Incredible experience!! :)
Chloe L — Google review
I have visited many islands such as Tahiti and the Maldives, but I had never experienced a beach with such crystal-clear water before. There are kiosks available where you can rent snorkeling gear and parasols. You can also buy light meals, drinks, and ice cream, though alcohol is not sold. It was truly an amazing beach that made me want to come back again.
Genichi H — Google review
Even though we came here in the rain, I think this is the best beach in Zamami! I would definitely come back here again on a sunny day! There are showers and a place to wash your feet. Since there weren't many people there, I don't know if it's free or not, but at Ama Beach, you only have to pay. There's also a cafe and a swimming equipment rental, but unfortunately, there weren't many people there to find out. The beach was incredible, with beautiful shells. We walked here, but it's important to remember that you have to walk uphill and then downhill to get here, which isn't very convenient. There's also a bus, but you have to check the departure times. One ride is 300 yen. Recommend to buy hus tickets in advance!
Haru K — Google review
Absolutely breathtaking – Furuzamami Beach is truly one of the most stunning beaches I’ve ever experienced in my life. From the moment we arrived, I was blown away by the vivid shades of turquoise and deep blue – the water is so crystal clear it almost looks surreal. As you can see in the photos, the color of the sea is unlike anywhere else, perfectly contrasting with the white sand and the lush green hills in the background. It's pure paradise. The beach itself is well-maintained, with comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas available, giving it a relaxed and organized feel. It’s ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or just soaking in the view – the coral reefs close to shore are teeming with marine life, and the calm, shallow water makes it accessible for all ages. Furuzamami Beach is a hidden gem that feels like a private island escape, yet it's just a short ferry ride from Naha. I’ve visited many beaches around the world, but this one left a lasting impression. If you're heading to Okinawa, this beach is an absolute must-visit. You won’t want to leave.
Valentin P — Google review
This might be the best beach I’ve ever been to in Japan — and definitely in Okinawa Prefecture! The water is crystal clear, like a natural aquarium filled with so many different species of fish. We truly enjoyed the entire day here. You can rent parasols and sunbeds at very reasonable prices, and there’s a lifeguard on duty, which is great for peace of mind. There’s also a small café where you can grab lunch, a drink, or rent snorkeling gear. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the port, or you can take a bus if you prefer. I totally recommend this spot — I’d definitely come back!
TancReady — Google review
The beach is clean and beautiful, with public toilets and rental lockers available. However, I suggest leaving your belongings at your hotel so you can enjoy swimming without worry.

Ama Beach

Mentioned on
11 lists
Beach
Outdoor Activities
Ama Beach is a stunning white-sand beach located in the southwest of Zamami Island, accessible by speedboat from Okinawa harbor. It is known for its clear and sheltered waters, perfect for snorkeling and spotting sea turtles. The beach also features a well-developed camping site, making it the only one on the shore of the East China Sea.
Peaceful beach a short bicycle ride from the village centre. Although we didn’t see turtles today, what stood out the most was the young female lifeguard from Naha. She greeted all beachgoers with a smile. When we were out snorkelling during high tide, she even saved our belongings from being swept away!!
Xiezz — Google review
Beautiful beach and scenery as if out of a travelling catalogue. However, the swimming area is heavily restricted and the water was less than knee deep at the limit. Some people had snorkeling gear but the water was too flat to submerge at all, it was a pretty tragic sight. Like everywhere here, it's difficult to walk on the washed up corals and limestone ground without footwear. There is no place in the shade with view of the sea so definitely bring a parasol. Definitely only come here during high tide, research a table when planning your trip. There are some nice food places nearby.
Tobias L — Google review
Nice beach, not crowded, safeguard are present. Too bad the area is limited, to protect the coral, but still OK so see a lot of different fish, if u are lucky turtles too.
Hichem B — Google review
Disappointed you can only swim between the lines and the coral in this area is crushed and white. Thankfully someone advice us to check the beach before renting the snorkel gear. But still the water is clear blue.
Jeremy V — Google review
Snorkeled and it was great. Clear water and lots of marine life to see. Saw seasnake and octopus and parrot and other fish.
Darin P — Google review
A small, cosy and beautiful beach. Frequently visited by sea turtles. Watch the tide times, as it gets really shallow at low tide (knee deep) and makes it hard to swim or snorkel, but becomes few meeters deep upon high tide (the turtles show up around that time as well). The reef not big but has nice variety of fish.
Yuri K — Google review
Simply mind blowing beach, blue colour great view and the coast guard will be there to help you if in case, two flags will be hosted at the either end which denotes the swimming area, the swimming area is very much limited then. Outside you have bathrooms and baggage archives.
Beyond B — Google review
This is the best beach on the island! We went here our first day. The sand is soft and the beach is long. There is a lot of coral, but you have to swim a bit to reach it. You’d need snorkelling gear and probably a wet suit if you go in the winter like we did. We saw a giant sea turtle as well as a fugu! The beach is beautiful

The island was a lot of fun. Highly recommend renting scooters to get around. Get up early and check out the sunrise. There are hidden beaches and we spent an entire day on the water undisturbed.

(Translated by Google) A still-undiscovered paradise. A laid-back island with a sea so beautiful it will leave you speechless. It's so laid-back that there are very few shops and restaurants, which can be a bit of a challenge (although it's not impossible). But you'll be fine if you stay at a guesthouse that includes meals. It's connected to Geruma Island and Sotojima Island by bridge, so the most common way to get around is by bicycle. However, Sotojima Island is an uninhabited island with only an airport, and the hills are quite steep, so I don't think you need to go there. Whale watching tour agency
Zamami Whale Watching Association offers an incredible opportunity to witness humpback whales in action from January to late March. While you can catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures from the viewing deck, joining their whale watching tours is highly recommended for a closer encounter. The crew goes above and beyond to ensure sightings, even extending tours when multiple whales are spotted. Visitors praise the friendly and accommodating staff for creating an unforgettable experience.
The whale watching tour is great! The crew made every effort for us to see as many whales as popular! They even extended the tour when we found 3 whales near the end. It was such a cool experience. The crew were super friendly. I highly recommend this tour

Zamami Port Ferry Terminal.

Mentioned on
5 lists
Ferry service
Zamami Port is a charming and small port on the island, with only a few fishing boats. It serves as the commercial center of the island, hosting small supermarkets and restaurants. The area around the port is covered with coral reefs, offering a glimpse of Mother Nature's beauty. The port also features amenities such as souvenir shops, waiting rooms, and mooring for diving boats. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views of cherry blossoms and experience the stunning Kerama Blue from this port.
Extremely efficient - arrives and departs exactly on time. Seating is comfortable. Pro Tip: get here early to line up so you can get a seat. Usually crowded.
John G — Google review
Worst ferry experience I've done. They cancelled the fast boat we booked so we we're forced to take the slower one which leave's earlier. They also only repaid us half what they owed us because of the cancellation. It's sad because Zamami Island was stunning and I would go back anytime but service and price was horrible.
Maxime R — Google review
Super easy to navigate, English speaking staff they have lockers for 700 yen a day if you do not wish to travel with all of your stuff around the island. It's the center from both beaches.
LAUS D — Google review
Website with announcements and to check reservation availability is terrible and can only load half the time. It does not help that they cannot determine cancellations until the morning of the scheduled ferry. Refunds are at their mercy and supposedly can take two months to process. Poor service for relatively high prices.
Vanessa C — Google review
We arrived arrived early and still missed our boat. Beware, the boat heading to Naha boards at different locations depending on what ship you have. You need to figure that out yourself or you will miss your boat and get zero refund and need to buy a new ticket (if they aren't sold out). And mess up any plans especially if you need to catch a flight. The staff will say "we have signs and announcements etc", but they plaster a bunch of random signs everywhere, and announcements are Japanese, with English just saying the boat is leaving soon. Hardly helpful if you are waiting in the wrong spot to begin with and don't know they board at different spots.
Sunny L — Google review
Had the best time on this island from biking, snorkeling and relaxing while eating tacos.
Poochie C — Google review
Easy to use and super friendly service. The bus stop is a 2 min walk inland from the ferry terminal. The ticket office can answer most all questions in English. There is a little shop with souvenirs and small snacks.

Kami-no-hama Observation Deck offers a stunning panoramic view of the Kerama archipelago, with clear vistas of Furuzamami Beach, Shiru Beach, and Aka Island. From this hilltop vantage point, visitors can admire the beautiful seascape and watch islands floating in the sea. The observation deck provides benches with small tables and shade for a relaxing break while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
The best place to watch sunset. We visited 30 minute before the sunset, and there were already few groups waiting. It probably won’t get too crowded but the parking space is limited to 5,6 cars.

Aharen Beach is a popular destination on the southwest side of the island, known for its white sands and clear blue waters. It offers an intimate setting with opportunities to see tropical fish and sea anemones. The 800-meter-long beach provides a central lifeguarded area and another section to the south, ensuring safety for swimmers. Visitors can enjoy various marine activities such as snorkeling, banana boat rides, and sea kayaking due to its nice coral reef and clear water.
We loved it here. The life guards were really nice, and there was quite a lot to see even within the restricted areas. We still took a guided tour to the unhabited island and it was also nice, though with restricted area so big you might be happy with just that. Nice amount of restaurants available, though beach toilets little far and only few.

The most beautiful beach I've ever seen. You can rent some snorkeling gear and go out and snorkeling. I saw lots of fish around the corral reefs. Beautiful white sand. A must see when visiting okinawa. Highly recommend.

A very beautiful beach for all tourist. You can join their snorkeling trip or diving trip( prebooking to made before going). You can rent umbrellas and sun loungers. There are some cool shop for drinks and foods. Also some swim clothes or slippers.
Desmond L — Google review
A really cute little cove. The diving on day one was good, not much impressive sea life and a lot of destroyed bleached coral reef but zero visibility the next day. A little over run with Chinese tourists waving their umbrellas, drenched in factor 50 & unnecessarily bellowing at the top of their lungs. But other than this… there’s beauty and silence underneath the waves

This Beautiful beach is a hidden gem that is located on Tokashiki island in Okinawa. You have to take a 45 minute ferry ride to the island than a 15 minute bus ride the beach. The Ferry and bus are schedules are coordinated with each other. So there's always a bus. You can rent chairs, umbrella for cheap. There's showers, restrooms near by. It does it busy. There are small restaurants in the area, bring your snacks if you like.

One of the best beaches we’ve ever visited! 🏖️ The water is crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling. We recommend renting an umbrella and beach chairs (about 3,000 yen) for a comfortable day. They have discounted lunch menus with two options daily and provide allergen information for their items. While they don't have specific vegan or vegetarian options on the menu, they can accommodate requests like mixed veggies with tofu. The food overall was fantastic. The chicken was a bit dry, but all the other dishes we tried were delicious and well-prepared. We’ll definitely be back to enjoy the wonderful food!"

Absolutely delicious! Highly recommend ordering the fried jimami tofu. I will dream about that tofu for many many nights. Their steak set menu was tasty too!

Incredibly lucky to score a dinner on a Friday night here without prior reservations- highly recommend this local izakaya joint for great goya champuru and fresh sashimi! The set meals are very value for money. And the izakaya is run by a very friendly family, making us feel right at home.

Delicious food, they take card payment too. Closed on Wednesday. No reservation is needed, unlike some of the other restaurants in the village. Had the beef steak set, stir fry vegetables set, and braised pork belly. All were full in flavour. Would come here everyday to try out all their menu !
Sam K — Google review
Really delicious! Great value for money – everything was fresh, well-prepared, and tasted fantastic. Highly recommended!
Ki L — Google review
This place is only worth going to taste the Jimami tofu. IT WAS AMAZING. The tatami mats and oldschool Japanese vibe was albo nice. The staff however was 50/50. They ran out of rice so when I asked for a dish with rice, without rice (I wanted to order eel) lady was almost screaming at me.... The tuna I ordered instead was probably the worst tuna I ever ate, gross cut with lots of hard tissue. Rest of the dishes was OK, nothing spectacular.... So go there and order as many jimami tofu as you can and leave xD
Michał S — Google review
Items are clearly marked with allergens. But when asked, they said they had no vegan or vegetarian options. But they were able to make a mixed veggies with tofu with salt and pepper. Not too bad and decently large portions! Tofu, cabbage, carrot, bean sprouts, green onion. Also agedashi tofu and mushroom salad available.

Their Mozuku soba was super delicious. Clear broth soup was very refreshing

We were there yesterday for a full day snorkeling trip. It was amazing, the best snorkeling experience I’ve ever had. So we went to four spots in total, and every one of them are fantastic. It was raining a little bit but the visibility under water was still great. Lots of fishes and corals surrounding. Mr. Wayama is really friendly and good at tour guiding. The food there was also super good. I’ll come again if I had the chance.
Yuchen Z — Google review
We did a half day tour with Wayama-San and it was a great experience. Wayama-san picked us up from the port even though its a short distance to his shop. He then brought us to two beautiful snorkeling spots where we see beautiful corals, fish and sea turtle. After the tour, we could use the shower at the shop, and we rented the e-bike from their shop to go to furuzamami beach. Next time, we hope to be able to enjoy meal at their restaurant 🍜

🌴 As a new resident of this beautiful island of Zamami, I was eager to explore the local cuisine. BEST SNORKLE TOUR! We did a full day snorkelling tour yesterday and it was incredible - we did a few on the island but this was by far our fave! The guide was so happy, cheerful, passionate and full of knowledge! We speak English so although there is a language barrier he was able to communicate all the important info and he was a joy to have as a guide!!! Can’t recommend more!

The hot and cold noodles were very delicious. Gets really busy during around lunch time in the summer and gold week holidays. There’s a waiting list, so you need to write your name down and they’ll call your name.

Nanamaru

Izakaya restaurant
Nanamaru is a versatile dining spot on Zamami Island, serving as an izakaya by night and a breakfast restaurant in the morning. It stands out for its traditional Japanese-style breakfast menus and expertly prepared dishes. The menu features delights such as Agu pork belly salt grilled style, island-caught tuna sashimi, and local specialties like hoke. Visitors praise the fresh and delicious sashimi options, along with drinks like shikuwasa vodka.
Very nice hidden local restaurant. Spartan but spacious. Super tasty food. The fish is delicious and the croquette beef is very good. A little bit expensive tho (see the menu in the photos) I recommend the salt baked mackerel with an acerola & Okinawa sour fruit ;-).

We went to this place while we were looking for some dinner around the village. Luckily there was one table available, it was very full! We had amazing dinner with such helpful friendly service! So good!
Elisabeth P — Google review
Such a fine high-class quality dishes. Seasoning is perfect, high quality meat and fresh sashimi. However the quantity of one dish is very small compared to average Izakaya. Please try to book a table as it's so popular among locals and regular customers.
Linn T — Google review
Agu pork belly salt grilled style is really delicious with a side of steamed rice. Sashimi is also cut with an expert hand and perfectionist streak is apparent in the chef's food. Great find footsteps from my accomodation. Prices are more than reasonable for the quality, not sure what everyone is on about. Tuna sashimi is island caught and best I have had over the course of my 3 month stay in Japan. Second visit, other sashimi options when available are fresh and delicious.

Fantastic fresh fish and local dishes. Extra special kudos for the Saba no Shioyaki (Salt-grilled mackerel) and Gyu-suji (slow cooked beef with konnyaku) which were both top tier izakaya plates! If you're all about delicious fresh authentic local food, and you're not fazed by the rough and ready spartan (h/t previous reviewer) interior, then this will be a special experience for you! Just don't try to bring any vegans here!
Ed — Google review
Stopped here for drinks and appetizers. Drinks were amazing! My husband and I loved the shikuwasa (Okinawan lime) vodka drink. We shared the fried chicken (7.5/10) and the fried pork belly (10/10). The staff was so nice. And it was a very local, relaxed feel! The menu was not expensive.

Super delicious food! The menu is in nigongo and english as well! They don’t speak english, but try to help and explain about menu! Really appreciate the food Gotisosamadeshita 🙌🤤

My family of four had difficulty finding a restaurant on the island that would accommodate us for dinner, despite many having empty tables. This restaurant graciously welcomed us. We called ahead, and the chef spoke excellent English. The food was delicious, the prices very reasonable, and the portions generous. We enjoyed chicken karage, fried rice, and squid tempura; everything was excellent. We accidentally left our phone behind, and the chef kindly searched for us the next day, going all around the island! He is a very honest and kind gentleman; thank you so much.

I tried this delicious sushi set, and it was very high-quality and tasty. A very nice place.
Dasha D — Google review
What a fantastic place! We each got a tacorice set and beer, which was a bit under ¥2,000. The tacorice set was huge, coming with some fresh sashimi and miso soup, as well as some pickled veggies. Everything tasted incredible, and so fresh!! You could tell the sashimi was a fresh catch. The whole place gave the feeling of a down to earth, family run restaurant. Our server's English was perfect, and all the staff was so friendly!! For sure grab a meal here while you're on Zamami!!
Daulton — Google review
I ordered the "Tempura style squid," but what I received was a flour-based fried dish made with shredded dried squid. The menu description should not be "Tempura style squid" if it is not made with fresh, thick slices of real squid. The staff were not friendly, could not provide a clear explanation, and completely ruined the image of Zamami Island. I do not recommend this place.

The restaurant's distinctive orange exterior makes it easy to spot. Visitors have praised the delicious dishes like tofuyou and penne gorgonzola, as well as the fresh ingredients and friendly staff. It's recommended to make reservations for dinner due to its popularity.
One of the best meals I’ve had in Japan (and I’ve been here for about a month)! The food was incredible – the shrimp was so good I ordered it twice. The staff was also super kind, especially the girl who even took our Instagram to message us if a table became free. Such a warm, welcoming experience combined with amazing flavors. Highly recommend!
Targol M — Google review
We had spaghetti pastas, Margherita pizza and beef steak dish and Caesar salad. The spaghetti tasty and flavorful could compete with some chefs in Tokyo, pizza with huge amount of mozzarella cheese and steaks crispy bites. Caesar salad had tons of fresh leaves unlikely found on the island. Little slow though to serve but you can do!
Yumiko S — Google review
The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff were incredibly friendly and kind. Their warm hospitality made the experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this place!
Mark F — Google review
Really nice restaurant on the island. The steak was surprisingly good—tender and juicy with a tasty sauce. Fries were decent, overall just incredibly solid meal. We had a bottle of Montepulciano which paired really well with the food and wasn’t that expensive (4000 Y). They also served their own homemade awamori—in peach and coffee flavors—which were both fun to try and tasted actually very good. Friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely come back.

What a place and what a vibe :))) They have very unique and authentic menu, a very good variety of meals, traditional, international, Chinese, local - but in their own way. Very interesting! Even the apple pie is very unique but also veeeery delicious :) Nice, polite and kind staff

I loved the vibe of the place, the amazing food was icing on the cake. There's English menu for peeps who'd prefer that. With an amazing value, definitely recommend one night of dinner there if you're in Zamami

Came again in winter time, OMG this is BY FAR BEST RESTAURANT on Zamami! Should really get some Michelin stars! Penne gorgonzola finger licking delicious! Coriander salad, ordered it twice! Juicy spare ribs! The chef has such a rare sense of perfect mix and ingredients are fresh, even the decoration lemon was edible and crispy delicious! ------------------------------------------------- Late summer early autumn Zamami is so crowded, lucky we got a reserve and went for dinner. Everything was extremely delicious and rich! The pizza had a lot of cheese on it, the pasta much delicious sauce, the pork Rafute had 3 pieces because we were 3 at the table, the Tako rice was a generous portion. Staff were nice too although they rush you through a bit but that is understandable because so many people want to eat there so better do your long talks in your hotel's lobby and come here to just enjoy the food. Needless to say you NEED DINNER RESERVATION booked by lunchtime or you will be starving on this island (or eat frozen pasta from the supermarket). Went through that!!! It is imperious you book a restaurant because by 6pm all places are full and you'll wander the streets from door to door in vain. And this in September not even high season! This place also servers lunch, a pity we didn't go.
ADEYTO A — Google review

Torajiro

Mentioned on

Izakaya restaurant
Torajiro is a charming izakaya on the beautiful island of Zamami. It's known for its delicious Osaka cuisine and warm atmosphere. The semi-outdoor pub has a lively vibe, with friendly cats often stopping by. The food is both cheap and amazing, with the tofu champuru being a standout dish. Customers can enjoy takoyaki and strong drinks like Orion beer and highballs. The staff are incredibly welcoming, making it a delightful experience for visitors.
This was our favorite spot to eat during our visit. It was a casual place with good food and there were cats hanging around 😻 They were welcoming and sat us right away. Food came out quickly and was delicious. We were lucky enough to come back for dinner a couple days later without any wait time.
Jennifer Z — Google review
The best restaurant in Zamami is also the most unassuming. Conveniently on the way to the ATM, this hidden gem serves a hearty and tasty variety of dishes fit for any taste. I had the pork yakiniku, which I had no idea what it was; and what it is, is delicious. The chef is super accommodating and the lady who took my order was so nice and helpful. It’s also very nice to communicate with someone in perfectly clear English. I can’t recommend this place enough. After a few less than optimal experiences in the island’s most popular places, Torajiro gave me back my hope of having delicious and hearty Japanese food in Kerama. Oh and the prices are great too.

🌴 As a new resident of the beautiful island of Zamami, I was eager to explore the local cuisine. Today, I visited Torajiro, and it was a delightful experience! If you want to savor delicious Osaka food on this island, 🍱 this izakaya is highly recommended. The staff were incredibly warm-hearted, making the experience even more enjoyable. ❤️ I will definitely be back again soon. 🌟
Mark F — Google review
Delicious food and a wonderful atmosphere. There are also cats who hang out here, and if you enjoy cat company they always come by and say hello. If you aren't sold by the cat friends, the food is cheap and amazing. The drinks menu is solid and they are cheap and strong, but the food is where this one man show really shines. The tofu champuru (stir fried tofu on the English menu) is absolutely bomber. The rest of the menu doesn't disappoint either, with daily availabilities written up front ranging from seasonal side dishes to fresh fish. Local specialties along with izakaya favorites in a relaxed friendly atmosphere with locals makes this izakaya a best in class experience. The owner/chef is only one man, and thus it often ends up full, but it's worth checking it he has space, or even coming by early (6-630)

Nestled on Aka Island, Yonamine House is a charming izakaya that offers a cozy atmosphere complemented by soothing jazz music. This delightful bar serves up an array of light bites like pizza and sausages, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The island's locals exude warmth and friendliness, creating an inviting environment that feels distinctly different from bustling cities like Tokyo or Osaka.
It's a bar with traditional Japanese liquors, wines, coctails and beer, but also it helps that they serve nice foods at an hour when the very few other eateries on the island are closed! Open from 6 pm to midnight but if there are customers they extend the opening hours. Another good thing is that they are located close to the beach where you can observe the Sunset, the Hizushi beach and you can have dinner here after sunset! They serve island foods and a special tofu made on the island, pizza, salads, oysters and other seasonal dishes. Very friendly owner and locals ready to help with travel suggestions so that you can fully enjoy the small island.

When I came to Aka Island this time, I found that the people on the island were very different from the Japanese I met in Tokyo and Osaka. They seemed more relaxed and smiled more brightly! I spent the evening with them at the bar, and their smiles were something I had never experienced anywhere else in Japan. When you order a cocktail, you can tell what flavor you like. You can also pay by credit card and electronic payment in the bar, which is really great. It was a very enjoyable evening!

Incredibly friendly bartender, had a genuinely lovely evening chatting to him about my holiday and teaching each other about our homelands. You can request any cocktail and he will do his best to recreate it for you! A true indicator of a great barman. Despite any language barriers, the owners are incredibly accommodating, adding to the warm and welcoming ambiance.
The savory aromas of the cooking was all it took to get me in the door. Walking down the road from Zamami Port, my friends and I were all hungry and followed our noses to this wonderful little hole in the wall. The place felt like home and the smells made me feel like I was back in my grandma's kitchen. The staff at My store Ojisan is extremely welcoming and greeted us with warm smiles upon entering. The menu offers a decent variety of options without being overwhelming. Both my spouse and I opted for the stir-fried vegetables with pork, which was accompanied by a delicious serving of Udon noodle soup. It's clear that this eatery is frequented by locals, as we were the only Americans present while everyone else seemed to be Japanese patrons.
This was a great ending to our camping trip! All of our food was so delicious! The staff was very considerate and kind too. English menus with photos 😊We will definitely be back 😊

Very friendly staff, as soon as we walked in we were greeted with big smiles and friendly greetings. The menu is large enough to have a few choices but not overwhelming. My wife and I both got the stir fried vegetables with pork. It comes with a small bowl of Udon noodle soup which was also really tasty. This is definitely a place where the locals eat as we were the only Americans there and everyone else that came in was Japanese. This is a great little restaurant that is located near the downtown area so it’s easy walking distance to everything else in the area. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area, a great taste of Zamami.

We dropped in, looking for a quick bite. We got the udon and the curry. Both were quite tasty...quite standard. I would definitely had preferred a cold noodle option since outside was at 40 degrees Celsius and there was no AC in the restaurant. The outside of the restaurant looks more rugged these days.

Customers praise the flavorful classic burger and cheese pizza. The restaurant's irregular schedule can be checked on their Instagram for updates on specials.
Mouthwatering burgers and pizza! The garlicy lemon yoghurt sauce on the lamburger is insanely good! The 4 cheese pizza is yummy too! The pizza base could be a little thicker, but overall great food! The brownie with local Zamami honey, is a must try!

Phenomenal burger - juicy with a homemade bun and fries that tasted fresh and delicious. Looking forward to going back to try the pizza! Dog friendly area outside on the covered porch.
Christine B — Google review
On our 1st day in Zamami, we decided to go and try this place attracted by the great reviews left by other clients in google and Tripadvisor. We were 2 adults and 2 kids. I have to say the burger was delicious, the bun super soft and the Zamami sauce incredibly tastey. Service was a bit slow and the waiter not really engaging but overall it was a great food experience. Really recommended if you are visiting Zamami.
Stefano — Google review
The burger was ok and the Pizza was nowhere near an Italian (or American) Pizza, but alright. Unfortunately, the owner and the male staff was extremely rude. They made it seem like a burden when trying to make an order, slammed the food on the table and the owner didn't even greet, nor said goodbye. However, the Japanese guests sitting next to us were treated oddly nice by the owner - who is obviously not Japanese himself. Additionally, the prices are quite high. Stay away!

We ate at Zamami burger and pizza 2 nights in a row, it was that good!! It was a great taste of American food on a Japanese island. We got the cheese pizza and classic burger. The pizza was on a thin crust and cooked in a brick oven, great simple pizza with lots of flavor. The Classic burger was char broiled which is sometimes hard to find in Japan. It was thick and packed with flavor. The service was fast and they were very helpful. The chef and waiter both spoke perfect English. We only used Yen while eating here so not sure if they take card. Also highly suggest calling ahead of time and making a reservation. They book up fast!

Okinawa Naha Airport. An airport which serves both domestic and international flights. It is well served by the monorail which allows travellers who had landed at the airport to travel to city area seamlessly. There are many shops and F&B located at the level 2 of the airport, but mostly on the domestic terminal public area. Furthermore, after passing the immigration centre, there are 2 cafes available for passengers before boarding the international flights. Plus, there are viewing areas at level 3 & level 4 of the terminal for the public to have a bird eye view of planes taking off and landing.

I was sitting in the international departure area and had the meal at Ramen Takoyaki. It was very usual that returning the tray once after finishing the meals. The moment I returned the tray to the areas of returned trays, that old Japanese grandma staff was mad at me and instantly pulled a face. I didn't do anything wrong. I have been to many airports. This is the worst customer service I have ever been received. Is it because I'm not japanese, you can treat customers badly and rudely.

The domestic terminal is pretty basic. After security there are a few small shops with a very limited selection of food options. I regretted not buying something from the convenience store before security, and eventually had to skip lunch. The toilets get very busy. On the other side, there are many seats available which is good.

Nice airport! Unfortunately cause I arrived at 9:30 p.m., all the stores were closed. The airport is near the monorail station.
