Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Ancient Ruins
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, dating back to the 10th century, holds significant historical importance as the first fundamental government of Vietnam. Spanning 13.87 square kilometers, it witnessed pivotal events such as the union of Vietnam after the 12 Lords Rebellion and wars with neighboring dynasties. The ancient citadel is home to temples honoring emperors and royal figures from over a millennium ago, including Dinh Tien Hoang Emperor temple and Le Dai Hanh Emperor temple.
Peaceful and Spiritual Experience I visited the Hoa Lo Ancient Pagoda during my trip to Vietnam and felt a deep sense of peace and spirituality. The place is serene, beautifully maintained, and filled with an aura of devotion. The traditional architecture, incense-filled air, and the calm environment offered a moment of quiet reflection amidst the busy city life. It’s a perfect spot to connect with the local culture, observe age-old rituals, and spend some soulful time. A must-visit for those seeking a blend of culture, history, and spiritual calm in Hanoi.

The place was nice, clean, and the pleasant weather added to the experience. There wasn’t much to see in terms of ruins, but we appreciated the well-maintained environment and could imagine the rich history behind the site. Maybe we didn’t have enough time, or perhaps not much of the ruins remain. But overall, it was a great visit. Would love to explore more of the surrounding area if given the chance!
Krizia C — Google review
Lots to see here, including a small museum and awesome pools and gardens. People were friendly and there were lots of tour groups but it wasn’t too crowded. Bike definitely sped up the trip but not as much as advertised.
Rebecca D — Google review
Beautiful and peaceful place full of history. I visited on a rainy day, and even then the scenery was still stunning — ancient temples surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic limestone hills. A great stop to explore Vietnam’s first capital and feel its timeless atmosphere.
Agnieszka S — Google review
Pretty cool spot! Visited during a day trip to Ninh Binh, so my tour guide was able to explain the historical importance of the temples and their symbols. Tickets were managed by the tour guide, but I noticed that it was just a staff at the entrance, so entrance is quite simple
Nicole Y — Google review
Very cool to see the old temples and architecture. The historical significance of this area is worth the visit. I'd recommend not renting a bike. Find free parking, walk through the temples, and up the 50m steps to the first emperors tomb. Great view point from the top.
Wyatt M — Google review
A truly beautiful and peaceful ancient temple in Vietnam. The architecture reflects deep history and culture, and the surroundings are calm and serene. A perfect place to experience spiritual energy and traditional Vietnamese heritage.
Madhu A — Google review
Bit of a letdown. 2 temples and fish ponds. Very pushy street vendors and "parking wardens" in front. One of them took our motorbike from the "free parking" and put it in her garage, asking me for 10k when I came back - and scolding and cursing me when I refused. I would give this one a pass. Staff in temple also rude.

Bái Đính Pagoda

Bai Dinh Pagoda, located in the Gia Vien district, is a significant pilgrimage site that encompasses both an ancient and a new pagoda. The complex covers a vast area of 700 hectares and boasts several impressive features such as the largest bronze statue of Sakyamuni Buddha in Asia, the longest 500-Arhant corridors in Asia, and the biggest da hong chung (a giant bell) in Vietnam.
Bái Đính Pagoda is an incredible place to visit and one of the highlights of Ninh Binh. The complex is huge with hundreds of Buddha statues lined along the walkways and several impressive temples to explore. The main pagoda is beautiful and the giant bronze Buddha is breathtaking to see in person. I went as part of a tour, but honestly it is not worth it. You can easily go on your own since the entrance fee is relatively cheap. There are many steps to climb but the views and the peaceful atmosphere make it worthwhile. It is a very spiritual and impressive site and definitely worth adding to your trip in Ninh Binh.

Amazing place. Very beautifully maintained and peaceful. We took the electric caddy option but realised it's way more beautiful if you walk around instead. The old monastery short hike was great as well. Needs 4-5 hours to visit properly and soak-in the surroundings and the temple environment.
Kartik G — Google review
This Pagoda has the tallest tower and largest gold coated Buddha statue in Southeast Asia. Place is huge, you need mimimum 3 hours if not more to see most of the things. It's not worth to go to point 27, the rest is very interesting and worth seeing. There's an elevator in the tower so it's very easy to go to the top, to 12th floor. The view of the entire complex is magnificent.

It seemed to me like Vatican but for Buddhists :) its very extensive, beautiful and impressive, its a lot to discover and for proper discovery you would need like almost whole day but you can do quicker more shallow tour in like 2-3hrs ...its very tourist friendly ...close to No.13 - herbal soak bath - is a great cafe not to be missed but many other refreshment stations and nice clean restrooms are all around the area. Definetely buy ticket option for 300k dong. It totally worths it and you ll appreciate taking a ride by buggy ...important info: when we visited THERE WAS NO RESTAURANT with warm meals at the visitors center...we expected there would be restaurant at such a big tourist spot but they only had filled dumplings:( if that happens to you and you are there hungry go to Family organic restaurant which is like 5 mins away by scooter...its very good and cheap meal...you can thank me later:)

Very beautiful template and pagoda. You can easy spend several days here. Be aware that there some steep walking areas so if you have mobility issues you should know. We went on a weekend day during off season and almost no one was there.
Brittani S — Google review
If you don’t do your research in advance, prepared to be surprised by this sprawling complex spanning hundreds of acres of land. There’s ancient stone temples over 1000 years old and a newer temple complex completed fairly recently. A visit will take easily 2 hours or more, but it’s the most relaxed, tranquil setting with lush gardens.
Gabriel R — Google review
Beautiful! So many temples and pagodas. The complex was clean, well manicured and easy to navigate. Unfortunately, we were visiting as part of a tour and we were too rushed and didn’t get to explore on our own terms. If/when we come back to Vietnam, I’d love to spend more time here and get a chance to see up close, the ancient pagoda that is an icon here.
Jen L — Google review
Beautiful place with lots to see, totally worth the ticket. Get the package which includes all shuttles, foot soak, and trang an. If you don't get the shuttles, prepare to walk for hours and hours. Bring sunscreen, a hat, umbrella, and sunglasses.

Tam Coc - Bich Dong

Mentioned on
43 lists
Tam Coc - Bich Dong is a stunning natural wonder located in Ninh Binh, often referred to as 'Ha Long Bay on land.' This picturesque area boasts an array of limestone caves and significant cultural sites, including the enchanting Tam Coc caves, the historic Thai Vi temple, and the serene Bich Dong pagoda. The region's breathtaking landscapes are particularly captivating during rice harvest season when fields transform into golden vistas.
It was a beautiful boat ride of around 1.5 hrs. When I went there was a typhoon so cave 3 & 4 were not functional otherwise it is a 2.5 hr boat ride. The view and the scenery is breathtaking. The lake is filled with roses and water lilies. They paddle the baot with their legs so that's fascinating. If you are planning to go for a baot ride at tam coc plan in the morning or evening otherwise it becomes very sunny and hot.carry loads of sunscreen, water and your camera

A must do to experience the beauty and tranquility of Mother Earth. This absolutely awesome boat ride was manned by amazing women who use their feet to row the boat. The entire experience takes about 2 hours - be prepared with sun block, hat or umbrella and water because it gets hot. Soak in the majestic landscape of hills and mountains well known as the “inland ha long bay” amidst the tranquility of gliding along the calm waterways lush with water lilies in bloom if you get there early. The ride takes us into narrow caves with very low ceilings. We had to lower our heads to avoid bumping into the cave structures which are centimeters within reach. The expertise of our females rowers navigating through the extremely narrow passages were nothing more than astounding. Before the return journey starts we are offered aplenty local handicrafts to buy. Do bring cash along with you if you want to support the local community and also to tip them at the end of the ride. We took a day trip from Hanoi to Tam Coc; We left Hanoi at 645 and arrived at 830am, perfect timing as the weather was still cool. The cost per pax for the boat ride is 100k VND which was bought when we arrived. There were no queues and was very quick. We had to then choose our life jackets and straight to the boat from there.

Visiting Tam Cốc - Bích Động was truly a magical experience. The boat ride along the river, surrounded by stunning scenery, becomes even more breathtaking as you glide through fields of vibrant pink water lilies. It feels like stepping into a painting : peaceful, colorful, and absolutely unforgettable. Tourist Tip: Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and, most importantly, to see the water lilies in full bloom. Once the sun rises higher, they begin to close… so the earlier, the better for the most magical view! The calm atmosphere, the reflections of the limestone mountains on the water, and the charm of the traditional rowing boats all contribute to a moment of pure serenity. If you’re in the Ninh Bình area, this is an absolute must-do. A beautiful, authentic, and picture-perfect experience that stays with you long after you leave.

I did this around 3 PM and it was very chill and not crowded. The views are beautiful. I have also done Trang An and I like that slightly more, they offer a bit different views though. Worth a visit for sure
Shahin S — Google review
A 💯% must see and is mandatory to be on every bucket list. Fantastic row on a flat bottomed punt through magnificent vistas and through watery tunnels carved by the water over millennia. It is spectacular to watch the boats men and women propel the punt along using oars controlled by their feet. One can only imagine the stress and strain in the hips.

Visiting Tam Cốc – Bích Động is truly like stepping into another world. The beauty here is breathtaking and carries a sense of peace that is very hard to find elsewhere. The landscape of limestone mountains rising beside the calm Ngo Dong River creates a picture that feels both dramatic and serene. Taking a boat trip through the caves, with the gentle sound of paddles moving through the water, makes you feel as if time slows down. It is one of those rare places where you can completely relax and reconnect with nature. For Vietnamese visitors, the experience feels almost like traveling abroad. There are so many international tourists here that sometimes you might think you are in a foreign country. This unique atmosphere makes Tam Cốc Bích Động stand out compared to other destinations in Vietnam. You can see people from all over the world enjoying the scenery, taking boat rides, and cycling around the rice fields. It gives the place a very international vibe while still keeping the authentic charm of the Vietnamese countryside. The food scene here is also quite interesting. Because of the large number of Western visitors, many restaurants and homestays serve mainly Western-style dishes such as pizza, pasta, and grilled meat. This is convenient for foreign travelers, but for Vietnamese people who want to enjoy local cuisine, the options can feel a bit limited. There are still some traditional Vietnamese dishes available like cơm niêu, goat meat, or simple rice with local vegetables, but the variety is not as rich as in other regions. If you are specifically looking for authentic Vietnamese flavors, you might have to spend some time searching. Overall, Tam Cốc Bích Động is absolutely worth visiting. It is a perfect place if you love peaceful landscapes, slow travel, and cultural exchange. The blend of natural beauty, the feeling of being part of an international travel hub, and the calm countryside atmosphere make it unforgettable. Whether you come here for a day trip or stay longer, the memories will stay with you for a long time. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Vietnam!

What an amazing experience! Our row guide was amazing and took the best pics! Its definitely a must do while visiting Tam Coc. Also, do the hike and make sure to take a pic with the dragon at the top, but be careful, it is very sketchy up there.

🛶 Tam Cốc - Bích Động: A Charming and Serene Morning Trip We decided to take this boat trip early on a (Saturday) morning to avoid the crowds, and it worked perfectly. The route is lovely and significantly shorter than the more famous Trang An, but it is equally captivating with noteworthy and beautiful landscapes. After leaving the boat an electric car (like a bigger golf car) will take you to visit tre more pagoda and a cave (they drop you there and you can walk around). I'm only giving it four stars and not five because, at the end of the boat ride, the woman who rowed the boat kept insisting on a tip, as if it were mandatory. We had initially planned to give her a tip of 100,000 VND. However, due to her persistent and almost demanding attitude, we almost decided not to tip her at all. We only ended up giving her 50,000 VND because we wanted to buy a small embroidered artwork she showed us during the ride, and this amount covered the tip plus reduced the artwork to half price. P.S. We visited Trang An two days later, and none of the boat drivers there asked for a tip. You are free to leave one without any pressure and with genuine pleasure.

Bich Dong Pagoda is a captivating destination that beautifully blends history and nature, nestled against the stunning backdrop of mountains in Ninh Binh. This ancient tiered pagoda, part of the Trang An Landscape Complex and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, invites visitors to explore its serene surroundings. As you ascend through its three levels, you'll encounter ancient shrines and temples dating back to the 15th century, each offering breathtaking views of the lush landscape below.
Bich Dong Pagoda is a beautiful and sacred temple complex with a long history and calm atmosphere. There are three pagodas built on different levels of the mountain, surrounded by lush greenery, lotus ponds, and cool fresh air — a perfect place to find peace and quiet. You can see a few monks and local people praying, as well as elderly ladies keeping the temple clean and selling small souvenirs nearby. The entrance is free, and parking costs only 20,000 VND. Next to the pagoda, there’s a path leading up to “Hanh Phuc Lake” (Happiness Lake) — try climbing up for a lovely view of the mountains and countryside! A truly authentic and spiritual stop in Tam Coc, perfect for those who love culture, nature, and tranquility.

A place worth visiting, an ancient pagoda first built in the 15th century nestled in a serene tropical hill/ mountain. As part of the journey to the 3rd level you move through a cave that has amazing structures. Surrounding the ancient structure were calm waters of water lilies which unfortunately bloom mainly in the morning. We drove to Ninh Binh from Hanoi which is roughly a 1 hour 45 drive. The pagoda is then only a few mins drive from Tam Coc. On a Sunday the crowd was decent. No entry tickets required and as always, be respectfully quiet visiting a sacred place for locals. When we arrived it started drizzling - if you do hit wet weather, so be careful as the stone steps are slippery.
Juliana C — Google review
Beautiful temple - the best bit is along the path through the 'Parking Area'. There is a short climb up some steps and then it opens out onto a lake, which is absolutely stunning. Very few people head this way - had it all to myself even when the pagoda was busy. Free parking at the cafes / restaurants - DO NOT park in the 'Parking Area' as you will have to pay.
Martin — Google review
Went to Bich Dong Pagoda with a tour guide and was good explaining that history of this place. There are 3 temples to visit, the walk to the temple can be steep and may be slippery during raining season. You will have to walk into a bat cave to get to the second temple. The view from the top temple is awesome well worth the walk up. Not too high just a moderate climb up.
Daniel S — Google review
BE AWARE OF SCAMS the entrance is totally free! We were forced to park in this area. The man in the picture behaved very nicely and asked us to pay 50,000 per person as a ticket fee, offering free parking. Later we discovered that the entrance was indeed free. Together with another couple we confronted him and got our money back. This situation taught us to learn the rules and entrance fees before visiting any places of interest.
Alexandra H — Google review
The pagoda's ok, but alone I didn't think that worth a visit. It's the climb up the hill that makes this worthwhile. Great views from the top of the hill, but it's a strenuous climb with fairly uneven stairs.
G T — Google review
Outstanding. Pagoda, cave, and lake. Was raining when I visited, but it was still very nice. Bike/scooter parking is a pricey at 10k, other places were 3k-5k.
Grayson — Google review
Beautiful Pagoda with a lot of information at the ground level. There were a few steps to climb but nothing too bad with a few breaks to admire your surroundings. Don’t forget to take a skirt at the entrance on the ground floor before you enter (no shorts/skirts or bare shoulders allowed) otherwise you have to come down to get one after the first flight of stairs

Cuc Phuong National Park

Outdoor Activities
Cuc Phuong National Park is a vast conservation area spanning 25,000 hectares across Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh, and Thanh Hoa provinces in Vietnam. It boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna typical of tropical rainforests, including highly endangered species. The park features ancient trees, the Con Moong Cave with fossils, and the Cave of prehistoric man.
Excellent, satisfying a peaceful day exploring the park. We rented bicycles at the park entrance (150k all day until 6-7pm). We cycled to the far end which was fairly challenging, took about 1:45 with some short stops, taking it easy on the downhill stretches as the ground was wet) - the road is overall uphill on the way into the park. Enjoyed a rest for coffee at the park centre, then hiked the loop at the end (took 2:20 including time exploring the cave). Almost had the hike to ourselves. Lunch back at the park centre was fresh, cheap and enjoyable. Cycled back (very grateful for the downhill gradient, apart from a few steep uphill sections) and explored prehistoric cave on the way. Long and tiring day but very worthwhile. The road was mostly free from any traffic - only a few cars and motorbikes passed us all day - and the road surface was good.
Claire A — Google review
This National park is purely amazing. Take a scooter (or a bike) and ride through it, enyoing the nature and jungle in its purest form! I came up from Ninh Binh and can only recommend doing so if you are in the area it is a quite relaxing drive with the scooter without any traffic. Make sure to visit the prehistoric human caves and the ancient tree. The tree might not sound too spectacular, but it was probably my favorite thing to do! You have to take a small path into the jungle and you can continue on this path deeper into the jungle if you want (a guide i met on the way told me it goes on for 10km). It is really amazing to experince the jungle this way and no worries, you cannot get lost, the path is quite easy to follow. At the end of the road through the park you can find a restaurant for lunch. There is also a monkey reservatory but i was too late to visit (it is only open from 13:30 to 16:30). I highly recommend visitinf this park if you are in the Ninh Binh area!

We stayed here for five nights. The highlights were the beautiful forest setting, friendly staff, and welcoming atmosphere. The scenery was stunning, and we had an excellent hiking experience with rangers guiding us through the trails. However, there were some challenges. The insect bites took weeks to heal, and leeches were abundant, we counted around 35 in a single day of hiking, fall down several times as we got a bit of rain and wet.. Outch :). It was still an adventurous and memorable experience, but proper boots and leech socks are essential. Even with those, we were bitten quite badly. We didn’t encounter any large wildlife, but the night safaris were still a highlight. Thousands of fireflies lit up the forest, a beautiful sight. We also observed a few snakes chasing frogs, birds settling into the leaves for rest, and a variety of fascinating insects and bugs. Toward the end, we were lucky to come across a group of deer. The food at the restaurant was generally good, though there is room for improvement. Overall, a rewarding stay for nature lovers, but be prepared for the elements.

Just returned from Cuc Phuong National Park and I’m blown away! The jungle trails are lush and peaceful, and spotting langurs and rare birds was a highlight. The visitor center is very informative, making it perfect for both nature lovers and families. A must-visit for anyone exploring northern Vietnam.

Nice experience. We went there after the floods so the road was a bit slippery but we managed to get to get to the Preshistoric man cave and it was great. The whole route through the jungle is also very impressive.
Jakub Z — Google review
Any national park, anywhere in the world needs to be protected. Cuc Phuong is beautiful and wild and should remain that way, however the running of the park is terrible. The government are simply not doing enough to protect or police the boundaries of the park from poachers and logging. There are NO ANIMALS here, not a bird in the sky. If you come to view wildlife you can pay separately to see rare monkeys in tiny cages which cannot be released here because they will be poached again for food, exotic pet trade or the madness of chinese medicine. The same for the pangoling and most primates and mammals here. We did not pay to go to the 'rescue center' (glorified zoo) after seeing images and reading reviews about the small cages and the conditions of the animals. We stayed for 4 nights, which is far too long here. We did 1 hike which is at the end of the park (we had a motorbike but if you dont have transport you can either walk the 20km or hire a guide for 1,000,000dong) you don't need a guide and the trail is nice through the jungle. This seems to be the only hike and the only maintained trail in the entire park. We have visited hundreds of national parks in both developed and developing countries and this is by far the most neglected. There is just no investment in the guest experience at all. The staff are rude and abrupt, as though you are an inconvenience to them if you want to buy some food in the restaurant. There's really very little to do apart from travel the long 20km road. We tried the botanical garden but there isn't much in there apart from a long road through the jungle and the mosquitos were literally unbearable in there. If you want to go in there someone has to unlock the gate and then they lock you inside and you message them when you're finished - but there's no signs or information or map or anything, just a tarmac road through the forest. We tried the observation tower but the trail is not maintained, there are small landslides and trees blocking the path, the path is slippery and dangerous along the side of a rock face (we did persist and made it to the tower which was actually cool but you have to be fit and agile otherwise it's super dangerous). The problem again is when you get to the top, theres no animals or birds to see anyway but the view is nice. Now to talk about the accommodation. We booked into the Bong Substation because it says its remote and we wanted to be in the jungle. The website says 'far from civilisation' which sounds great for an adventure in the national park! We arrived and were pointed to different people, no one spoke any english (thats okay, we dont expect that) but it was as though no one was expecting us, they hurriedly grabbed some bedsheets and rushed off on a motorbike whilst trying to make us wait in the restaurant and eat something. We left and followed on the bike and the cleaner was frantically trying to change the sheets in what is the most disgusting room we have ever seen (and smelt) we left the room and allowed her to clean for 1 hour, hoping it would get better. When we got back the room was absolutely disgusting. The bathroom floor was filthy as well as all the taps and sink, there were rat droppings all over the floor and the smell of rats urine made our eyes water. The walls were covered in streaks and mould and all the sheets and towels were full of holes and stains. The lamp didnt work, and we didnt have a curtain on the door so anyone could see in. By this time there was no one around to ask for a different room as the reception was closed and no one spoke english, and theres no internet or signal in this area. We decided to try to get some sleep and deal with it in the morning however we didnt sleep because of the foul smell and there were live rats running around the room and on our clothes. The smell triggered asthma and was really awful. In the morning we were exhausted and hoped to try to hear some birds singing or listen to the jungle before arranging a habitable room but for some strange reason a man was outside with a petrol leaf blower

Beautiful nature, but inconsistent visitor experience We stayed overnight in Cuc Phuong National Park to enjoy its landscapes and wildlife, and while the natural setting is worth visiting, our overall experience felt confusing and poorly managed. The park itself is stunning — ancient forest, unique biodiversity, and decent rescue centers (EPRC and Turtle Conservation). These are the real highlights and worth your time. However, the organization around accommodation and activities leaves a lot to be desired. Prices were unclear and seemed to vary depending on who you asked. For example, we were charged 800,000 VND for a second-class room (quoted as $37 USD, which doesn’t match the official rate), and transport plus a night safari guide were quoted by a lady at reception at $75 USD — far above the normal local rate. All while snickering and laughing with co-workers in Vietnamese. Felt like we we're being ripped off with a smile, especially seen as there was no option tot pay electronically. Staff were unpolite and communication was limited, and rather than offering clear options when weather made night tours difficult, they simply discouraged us from joining. It felt as if the visitor experience wasn’t really prioritized. Overall, Cuc Phuong’s beauty speaks for itself, but management and hospitality could be improved significantly — especially with clearer pricing, consistent information, and better guest engagement. Tip: pay in VND only, confirm prices in advance, and focus on the rescue centers and short hikes, which are genuinely rewarding. For good jungle experiences, go to Pu Luông.

Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve, located around 20km from Ninh Binh city in Vietnam, is the largest wetland area in the northern region. This tranquil reserve is home to a variety of rare animal and plant species, including the endangered Delacour's langur monkey.
I enjoyed every minute of the boat ride. I can't believe these guys can row a boat for 1 hour and 30 minutes straight. No breaks. While also managing to take loads of photos of me. Logic does not compute. I tried rowing for a bit and within 30 seconds my arms went up in flames, the burn was real. I asked him loads of questions in English, which he probably didn’t understand, but that’s okay, because I didn’t understand any of his answers either. It was still really nice talking to him, even if nothing made any sense. I gave him all my money. He deserves all my money. He is far superior. What a legend.

Sitting in a boat in full sun exposure without any shadow cover (they should really add one), on an uncomfortable seat - a wooden plank - to see a not very varying landscape while being rowed by ladies who don’t speak any English … the pictures taken are beautiful but this felt like paying for suffering if you can’t stand direct sun burn. As concerns animals, we saw a bird, a dragonfly, some snail eggs, some cows and dead fish, nothing spectacular and none of the species in the pictures with which they attract visitors. Unless you have plenty of time, I would not recommend.

If you want a quiet and serene boat ride, make sure to come here! It’s a beautiful and serene nature area that is quite big. We came here at midday and we only saw a handful of people and the rest of the time we were alone. The nature is gorgeous and it is so peaceful!! It is 200k per boat with a maximum of 2 people per boat.

It's a great trip! We where all alone for the whole trip, something that really added to the tranquility of the experience. We got to see Delacour's langur up close, several unique birds and a trip inside the cave, even if it was high water. It was very hot, but we had hats and a good sunscreen which is a must, as well as water. We had our private guide that helped us in explaining what the boat rower had of knowledge. No tipping needed, but we added a bit anyway at the end. For us, this was a must do and a highlight.

If you are looking for a truly peaceful and authentic experience in Ninh Binh, look no further than the Van Long Nature Reserve boat tour. This trip was an absolute highlight of our journey! The Van Long wetland, often called the "Ha Long Bay on Land" offers an escape from the crowds. The entire experience was incredibly nice and calm. The silence was only broken by the gentle sound of the paddle moving through the water, allowing us to fully soak in the tranquility of this vast wetland. The views are simply outstanding. The majestic limestone karst mountains rise dramatically from the clear water, creating mirror-like reflections that are breathtakingly beautiful. Drifting through the reeds and under the cliffs felt like entering a secluded paradise. We even passed through a cave, which added a sense of adventure to the serene setting. A special mention must go to the very kind woman who drove our boat. Her friendly demeanor and careful rowing made the journey feel personal and comfortable. It's clear that the local people running these tours take pride in preserving this beautiful environment. This is a must-do trip for anyone seeking stunning natural landscapes combined with complete serenity. Highly recommended for a quiet, visually spectacular morning or afternoon!

So peaceful and quoted, especially compared to other natural boat rides in the area. We saw lemurs. It was raining so we didn’t get to see many birds like we had hoped, but the 1000s of lotus floors in bloom made up for it.

Sights & Landmarks
Nhà Thờ Đá Phát Diệm, also known as Phat Diem Cathedral, is a 19th-century stone cathedral located in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. It is situated amidst picturesque canals and rice paddies, making it a popular destination for spiritual tourism and cultural exploration. As the Catholic capital of Vietnam, this architectural masterpiece has stood for over 100 years and took 30 years to construct.
Superb experience! Vale la pena! ( It's worth the effort of waking up early, taking breakfast at 6am, leaving hotel at 630am to attend 730am Holy Mass at this majestic cathedral!) It has Great history place for Catholic tradidions, French Church in the North of Vietnam. If you go to Ninh Binh, must visit for Christian especially Catholics! Phat Diem Cathedral consisted of one big central church and 4 smaller ones surrounding this main architecture. The churches were beautifully blended of the traditional Vietnamese culture and architecture and the Western religion reflecting in every single corner. The stand out is a pagoda style roof. The interior is very brightly decorated. The interior has a well recognizable Romanesque-like arrangement with its central nave and side aisles separated by wooden columns, terminating in the raised sanctuary. While the interior particulars may be distinctly oriental or Vietnamese in most regards, the basic architectural structure are thoroughly rooted in the Roman basilica. You will feel the youthfulness, vibrant atmosphere of Mass when compared to attending Mass at the western hemisphere churches where there are no young people willing to spend their Sunday morning at church anymore. Here 75% of the Mass attendance are young people, kids and children! We also met very nice people who greeted us with warmth.

I was expecting another church, but it was interesting and not like other churches I've seen in Vietnam or elsewhere. Designed by Vietnamese. Inside is all teak wood, and some of the wooden pillars are massive!! The carvings were detailed. Nice bluestone gatehouse at the front. There was a church service starting when we arrived, so could only have a brief look inside.

Intriguing looking Church - a blend of Vietnamese and French architecture. There are several chapels and grottos around the main Church as well. Have not seen a Church like this before - would recommend popping by from Ninh Binh if you have time to spare / if you have your own transportation.

Stunning place that really worth the travel. The architecture is a beautiful mix of traditional Vietnamien and European styles. The wooden inside structure is fantastic, feeling being in church, and in a pagoda. Definitely a place to visit

A very beautiful and ancient place. Highly highly recommend for people who travel to Ninh Binh to visit. You can ask for nun to show tou around the church and explain about structure and its history also.

The Phát Diệm Cathedral (Vietnamese: Nhà thờ chính tòa Phát Diệm) is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phát Diệm, located in Kim Sơn District of Ninh Bình Province in Vietnam. The architecture of the church – built in stone and wood in 1891 – is an eclectic blend of Vietnamese and European architectural styles. It was mainly built in traditional Vietnamese architecture, similar to historical palaces and temples. It was bombed in 1972 and later restored. In addition to the cathedral itself, the Phát Diệm complex consists of five chapels, three grottoes, a memorial house, and the recently built pastoral center of the diocese. The cathedral is located in Phát Diệm township of Kim Sơn District in Ninh Bình Province.[1][2] It is about 29 km southeast of Ninh Binh and 121 kilometres (75 mi) from Hanoi.[3][4] Phát Diệm Cathedral was built by the priest Father Trần Lục (Père Six in French, or cụ Sáu in Vietnamese).[5] Père Six's tomb is in the frontyard of the cathedral.[1] The wooden statues in the cathedral were all carved by Pho Gia, a Vietnamese artisan.[6] The novelist Graham Greene described the cathedral as "more Buddhist than Christian"[7] in his novel the Quiet American.[8] After the 1954 Geneva Conference, many of its parishioners and clergy moved to safer places in South Vietnam. The cathedral is still functioning as a place of worship, and there are many more churches in the district.[3] On 15 August 1972, the cathedral was bombed, resulting in the collapse of its entire west wall, the convents and two of the schools. But now, after restoration, there are not even tell-tale marks of this destruction.[4] The overall size of the cathedral is 210 feet (64 m) in length, with a width of 60 feet (18 m).[10] The nave of the cathedral is built over 52 pillars, of which 16 are 11-metre tall (36 ft), carved from large ironwood trees. In the front worship area, the altar is made of a single slab, ornamented in "orthodox-style" and is made of "lacquered and gilded woodwork". Above the altar, there are portrait paintings of about 30 missionaries, most of European origin. The vaulted ceiling has paintings of angels in Vietnamese style.[1][4] The interior walls are decorated with Catholic iconography, but particularly have paintings of Eastern religious symbols like dragons, unicorns, tortoises and phoenixes.[9]

Unique architecture and the people are very nice, from the lady selling bánh gai outside the church to the library guy
Duc T — Google review
This church is very historical. Very unique build in ancient way. Doubt modern technology can build in similar way. Have big solid tree trunks column which is very heavy to support the structure of the church. Firmly built and aesthetic. Visiting the church perhaps gives you many blessings, peace and love. A small quiet town.

Mua Cave, also known as a smaller version of the Great Wall of China, has gained popularity in Ninh Binh. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely climb up 500 stone steps to reach the cave.
This place is absolutely worth a visit! The entrance ticket is around 100,000 VND per person, and the area is well maintained. The views from the upper level are stunning and truly rewarding. Be prepared though—the stairs are quite steep and can be slippery, even during dry weather, so wear proper shoes. The hike to the top can be quite tiring, especially in the hot weather, but once you reach the viewpoint, the breathtaking scenery makes it all worthwhile. It’s a perfect spot for photos and enjoying the natural beauty of Ninh Binh from above. Highly recommended if you’re visiting the area—just go early or late in the day to avoid the heat.
Manjitha T — Google review
The view from the top of Mua Cave is absolutely stunning — especially if you go to the left side once you reach the peak. Truly breathtaking! That said, be prepared for lots of tourists. The lotus lake at the bottom is also incredibly beautiful and peaceful, definitely worth a stroll before the climb.
Alicia — Google review
Wear comfortable shoes as there are a lot of steps, some very large. I would recommend taking a water with and a hat. Best time is first thing in the morning as it was heaving with tourists when went. The weather was humid and 34 degrees at times I wondered if someone had to fall or faint if it would create a domino effect 😳 the view at the top is worth it. Absolutely beautiful!!! When we visited there was a queue to climb the last bit to the actual dragon. You do need a bit of physical strength and ability to do the very last few steps to the top. Some people take risks. There are places to buy food and drink at the entrance area. Parking for cars is 20 VND and motorcycles 10VND. If you stay after sunset you can get images with the lights on of the temple at the top and balloons at the bottom.
Jeanette F — Google review
Come here if you love a good exercise with a scenic ending followed by another exercise in careful descent. The so-called 500 steps are uneven in size and height. But my watch said at least 2000 steps at the end of the descent. Nothing interesting aside from the scenery and the fat burn.

If you’re heading to Ninh Binh, Mua Caves (Hang Múa) is an absolute must-visit! This place is more than just a scenic spot — it’s a full nature + adventure experience. 🏞️ I climbed the 500 stone steps up to the famous Lying Dragon Mountain, and wow… totally worth every breath! The view from the top is unreal — endless rice fields, Tam Coc river winding through the mountains, and panoramic limestone cliffs that look straight out of a postcard. 😍🐉 What I loved: ✔️ The iconic dragon statue at the summit ✔️ Stunning sunrise/sunset views ✔️ Peaceful nature vibes away from the busy cities ✔️ Perfect photo spots everywhere 📸 Tips for future travelers: • Go early to avoid the heat & crowd. • Wear comfy shoes — the steps are steep! • Bring water. Trust me. 😅 • Pair this trip with Tam Coc or Trang An for the full Ninh Binh experience. Overall, Mua Caves is one of the best viewpoints in Vietnam and definitely a highlight of my Ninh Binh adventure. Highly recommended! 🌄🇻🇳

This will save you a day doing legs at the gym due to the steep stairs (and high humidity). Lovely views, it got terribly crowded at the top. Try go very early to avoid the congestion of people. It got a bit uncomfortable at the top with people pushing in while people were queuing to get to the top, causing lots of annoyance and upsets. To reach the actual dragon you will need to do a bit of climbing for the last few metres. Late afternoon/early evening gives lovely sunset views and at sunset everything is lit up. There was a fabulous restaurant we visited afterwards on the same road called Moc coffee (drink & restaurant) great food, decent prices and wholesome hospitality can definitely recommend.

The cave part of the name is a little disappointing, but the site in itself is breathtaking. From walking around a pond of Lotus Flowers (unfortunately no longer blooming when we were there, but that is a timing issue) to climbing up to the viewpoint (plenty of benches along the way so you don’t have to do the steep climb in one go) the scenery looked like a painting. Plenty of coffee shops at the foot of the mountain to rest before or after the climb.

The gave was more les for nothing. There were the shrine was nothing and a loot of trash at the end, there were you can sit and enjoy the view... the other door was close. So the hike to the hill is good but the gave for nothing

Nestled just 7 kilometers from the heart of Ninh Binh, Trang An is a breathtaking ecotourism site that captivates visitors with its stunning natural beauty and rich history. This picturesque area boasts an intricate network of caves, limestone mountains, and lush ecosystems that come alive during the rice harvest season when fields transform into golden vistas.
Unforgettable experience everyone should do ! We came on a Monday, quite early in the morning, but it became quite crowded during the morning. Make sure to avoid weekends and middle of the day if possible. There are three different tours, ranging from 2.5 to 3 hours. All the tours are the same price, 250k per adult. We took tour 2 and didn’t regret it for one second. The landscapes and temples are absolutely stunning. I recommend packing enough water, sunscreen, and a hat, as it can become really hot and sunny!
Maxime C — Google review
Our trip lasted about 3 hours and passed through 4 caves, some with low hanging stalactites so we need to watch our heads. Unfortunately, we were paired with an elderly woman as our rower who couldn’t help take photos, so most of our pictures turned out poorly. The first 1.5 hours were fun, but the second half felt never ending, so we ended up helping paddle in order to reach the finish sooner.
Bayu A — Google review
So, you pay money to sit in a wobbly little boat that makes IKEA chairs look ergonomic. Some poor soul rows you around, doesn’t speak a word of English, and you both just silently accept the mutual suffering. Your butt goes numb, your knees lock, and you start rethinking life choices. The ride itself is basically Netflix autoplay. Caves, temples, caves, temples. Just when you think, “ah, maybe now it’s something new,” nope, another damp tunnel or shrine. It’s like a greatest hits album where the band only had two songs. The scenery, though? Absolute banger. Jagged mountains, rocks, and trees that look like someone hacked into the Matrix and turned up the beauty settings. Every view is postcard-perfect, if you can still feel your hands enough to take a photo. Survival tip: bring water. Otherwise, you’ll be that sweaty tourist corpse they have to paddle back mid-route. Final verdict: 4/5. Uncomfortable boats, repetitive playlist, but the views slap hard enough to save it. Instagram will thank you, your spine won’t.

Tràng An is truly an amazing and unforgettable experience that should be at the top of every traveler's list when visiting Ninh Bình. I absolutely loved my time exploring this breathtaking natural wonder. 🏞️ The Experience Scenery: Prepare to be mesmerized by the stunning, lush green mountain scenery that surrounds you throughout the journey. It feels like stepping into a movie. The Boat Ride: The entire trip lasts approximately 2.5 hours, offering ample time to soak in the beauty. The ride is wonderfully unique, taking you inside caves, which adds an exciting, almost adrenaline-pumping dimension to the tour. Unique Feature: I was fascinated watching the local boat operators, many of whom skillfully row the boats using their legs! It's a testament to their strength and a memorable part of the cultural experience. Historical Stops: Along the way, the boat stops at various spots, allowing you to explore many beautiful temples nestled within the landscape. 👍 High Recommendation & Worth the Effort This experience is absolutely worth it and is a must-do in Ninh Bình. I was completely in love with the place and the journey. ⚠️ Practical Tips for Visitors Weather: Try to avoid the peak heat of the day. The sun is burning hot, and the exposure during the 2.5-hour ride can be intense. Hydration & Refreshments: Bring plenty of water and fresh snacks to keep refreshed and comfortable throughout the long journey. Solo Travelers: Be aware that the boats typically require four people to depart. If you are a solo traveler, you may have to wait for others to fill the spots, and it can sometimes take a long time and try to avoid crowds going early

It is registered as a World Heritage Site, so we 2 adults & 2 kids went there. We spent 4 hours relaxing on a boat. She lent me an umbrella to replace my parasol. It was full of nature and we enjoyed a relaxing time.Be sure to bring a raincoat as it will get wet. The weather changes rapidly, with sunny spells and thunderstorms, so it can get hot and cold, so think about what to wear. The tour is not bad but we liked Tam Coc's better, although they are different. This one is more complete, you visit many more things and make stops. But we found it much more touristy and very long (2h 30 min or so). It is quite crowded, at times the only thing you saw around were boats everywhere (I know you can not be alone, and I am aware that we were also in one of those boats). When we did that there was only one route available which was a mixture of route 2 and route 3, because it had rained a lot and there were things that you couldn't visit. In some caves you couldn't enter. The boatmen row with their hands. Ours was very friendly, took many pictures and was watching all the time. Moved by nature. It was more than I could have imagined. We spent 3 hour and a half on a rowboat, visiting the shores of lakes, mysterious caves and temples in the mountains, and were very healed. A place worth coming to. It just feels like there are too many tourists.
Prakash N — Google review
I was reading some older reviews about this place, like couple of years old or so and I must say that many of the negative issues tourists mentioned were probably delt with because my visit was super smooth! I came in lower season, at parking there were no scams, i bought ticket at the counter...you have 3 routes to choose and all of them cost the same - 250k dong...you can decide which one you want right at the boat dock that is across the street. There is a big waiting room, souvenir shop, cafes, bakery, everything very pretty and clean, bathrooms of good standard at no extra cost, i was alone and paired with another couple for a tour no.2 which was very beautiful. We didn t wait for 4th person. ..trip was very enjoyable and included three stops at temples and four passages in cave tunnels. Our rower was nice lady...she didn t speak english but she smiled and offered to take a pic of us ...in the end she didn t ask for trip but we of course gave her one...I think min.50k dong per person is appropriate and also a help with rowing will be very appreciated...at each of our three stops there was a bathroom and opportunity to buy water...the boat also had two umbrellas for visitors...everything felt very good organised and arranged for tourists...no hassle at all just a beautiful peaceful experience

If you are deciding between Trang An and Tam Coc boat rides, pick Trang An! Views are better and no touts hassling you. Go with route 2 for a good mix of caves and temples and to see king kong island.

Hang Mua is a must-visit spot in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. It offers an epic panoramic view of the river and rice fields, making it a popular attraction for travelers. The area is also close to the river gateway to Hoa Lu, an ancient capital with significant historical sites like Buddhist temples and stone cathedrals. Hang Mua consists of two main spots: Mua Viewpoint at the mountaintop and Mua Cave at the foot of the mountain.
Hang Mua is absolutely worth a visit! The climb is a bit challenging with around 500 stone steps, but once you reach the top, the panoramic view of Ninh Binh’s limestone mountains and rice fields is breathtaking. It’s one of the best viewpoints in Vietnam! Go early in the morning or near sunset for cooler weather and fewer crowds. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water — the climb is steep but the reward at the top is totally worth it.

Very worth the climb! But i really recommend wearing your hiking shoes or anything similar because the stone steps are quite steep and can get slippery, especially when there is just a slight rain. The 600+ steps to the top are absolutely worth it! The views from the summit are breathtaking — and so is the climb itself. 😅 But once you reach the top, the panoramic view of Ninh Binh’s limestone peaks and rice fields is unforgettable. Bring water, wear good shoes, and take your time — it’s a must-do! 🫶

Loved this place! A definite highlight of our trip to Ninh Bình. There are many photo spots and scenic areas to explore. If you have the endurance, climbing up the mountain is totally worth it—the view at the top is stunning and absolutely Instagram-worthy. Of the three spots we visited today, this is the one I’d recommend the most. It has a good mix of nature, adventure, and relaxation. Come and enjoy!

I did it!!! 500 humongous steps to the top of this small mountain that’s overlooks the city. Here’s a tip, walk up the steps in a zig zag fashion, takes a lot less out of you, it’s a physics thing.

As others have mentioned, Google Maps tries to navigate through Hang Mue Eco Park which is closed off, the actual entrance is through Núi Ngoạ Long (Lying Dragon Mountain). Avoid the private parking and park through the gate / ticket booth (100k per person). It’s 10k for motor bike and 5k per bike. Loads of cafes and restaurants inside and the views on top the mountains (recommend both but definitely do the dragon one (left)) are amazing! And then there are the lotus fields!!!

Chookie's Beer Garden is an outdoor restaurant in Ninh Binh, Vietnam that serves amazing Italian coffee and a range of comfortable seating options. Their menu is small, but expertly prepared and features vegan options as well as fresh and tasty food. The restaurant also has a full bar, free wifi, and accepts credit cards.
Our 5 members family just had a very nice dinner here. The atmosphere is great, they have also outside & inside table for different types of guests. The BBQ pork pizza was the most delicious dish we had. Highly recommend for everyone.

Fancied a change from Vietnamese food. Lovely place to eat, loads of seating inside and loads of booths and outside seating by a shallow pool. Wood fired pizzas looked great but we got tacos and a taco bowl, bowl was fresh, tacos slightly stale, but barely noticeable with the filling. Drinks were outstanding, loads of funky craft beers, I went for the hard lemonade. Staff were super friendly as well and helpful.

Absolutely loved it! After being away from home for a few months with our two kids, it was so nice to find food that reminded us of home. The meals were tasty, the drinks were delicious, and the service was amazing. We loved sitting by the pool surrounded by tropical plants — such a relaxing vibe. The kids had a great time playing in the fantastic playground while we enjoyed our meals, which made it even better for families. We enjoyed it so much that we ended up having both lunch and dinner at Chookie’s today! The atmosphere is clean and fresh, and it’s great being able to see into the spotless kitchen. Highly recommend! 🌿🍴

The restaurant has a really cool vibe with good music playing at just the right volume to allow you to have a conversation without having to raise your voice. The food is good too, I would recommend the spicy edamame as a starter and the Aussie Beef Burger or the Pulled Duck Sandwich as a main. The Burrito bowl was nice but the portion was a bit small, and the Local Bowl was mostly noodles, could have had less of that and more of the remaining ingredients. The desserts we found a little too sweet.

The food option variety was huge you could get burgers Mexican pizza… and every type of drink and dessert. The service communication was less than optimal but other than that this restaurants atmosphere next to the pool in the little booth was really nice and the taste of everythingwas incredible (especially the Mexican burger that was like a taco in a burger and the incredible lava cake!!).

We had a very disappointing experience at Chookies Restaurant. When we first arrived, we chose to sit outside, but immediately changed our minds after noticing a dead rat floating in the pool. We informed a member of staff, who looked at it and then simply carried on with their day without removing it. Not exactly reassuring for a place serving food. We moved inside and ordered a big brekkie and a milkshake. The restaurant was quiet—just us and one other couple—yet after receiving our milkshakes, our food didn’t arrive for 45 minutes. When we asked about it, staff went to check and came back 10 minutes later to tell us they had forgotten our order, but promised it would be ready in 7 minutes. After waiting another 10 minutes with still no food, we got up to leave. Only then did the meals suddenly appear. We decided to give it a chance, only to find that the “pork sausage” (as advertised on the menu) was completely pink in the middle on both plates. When we complained, two staff members insisted it wasn’t actually pork but a “chorizo-style sausage,” even though that’s not what the menu states. Given that they rushed the order after forgetting it, it’s pretty clear the food wasn’t checked properly before being served. Overall, the service was extremely poor, hygiene was questionable at best, and the food was unsafe. I would strongly recommend checking your food carefully if you choose to eat here—though based on our experience, I wouldn’t return.

This place is the 🐝 bee's knees. Western food at its best-est in the east. Cheesecaske, cinnamon rolls, chicken 🐔 fingers, pizza, burgers, nachos, and drum 🥁 roll bacon, eggs, toast and hash browns (with beans and 🍅 to cater to British folk). Awesome 80s tunes with vibe atmosphere. 10/10 💎 🌟 no drama

Felt like comfort food, and this place popped up. The burger bun was a standout, and the burger itself felt like anywhere else in the world (exactly what we wanted). However the highlight for me was the raspberry and mint iced tea! This was incredible! Such an intense flavour, but well balanced. Please get this!! Worth noting it is on the pricey side, but that didn’t phase us and was somewhat expected.

The food is OK. The restaurant has put a lot of effort into the bowls, plates, and decor, but the water/beer cups are plastic, which reduces the overall value of the dining experience. Please consider changing it.

Local restaurant that caters to locals. We tried the goat meat and crust rice with goat soup. This was definitely outside of our comfort zone taste wise. The goat meat had a lot of fat. Portions were very generous, don't order too much.

Fun to eat at a place packed with locals. We were recommended by locals to try "crispy rice" ("cơm cháy") - it's like a kind of corn/mushroom soup that you dip pieces of fried rice (it's wasn't on the menu, but we asked for it by using Chatgpt) and it was delicious. Unique and very delicious. We also ordered the grilled chicken with honey. Squeeze the lime on and dip the pieces in the salt/seasoning mix they bring with it - the locals know what they are doing! It's delicious and elevates everything!

Waited over 1 hour to get 4 dishes when the restaurant wasn't even busy. The crab soup is just tomato soup. The goat meat is very hard to eat. A cockroach landed on my wife's back! And we saw a mouse running around!

I came to this restaurant very hungry, which turned out to be a big mistake. They took forever to serve me — something quite unusual in Asia, where service is usually fast and friendly. On top of that, they messed up my order, the food wasn’t fresh, and the customer service was terrible. I’m leaving hungry and very disappointed.

The food was very nice and the staff was super friendly. The portions however were too big. There are 4 sizes to choose from - therefore, as we chose the smallest portion possible, we thought that the dishes are actually going to be small and we ordered 3 dishes for 2 people. This was a mistake as the portions are HUGE. We ate maybe half of one dish in total. After the meal we felt bad for wasting so much food…

Not quite sure how was the other giving good ratings for this place, but the experience for me was quite unpleasant. The food options is limited, took a very long time to serve, and came with the dish washing piece in our fried vegetable. They trying so hard to provide best service and I hope they will do better.

Okay this is the second restaurant I’ve been to in Ninh Binh and it’s just as amazing as the first one. What is it with Ninh Binh and insane portion sizes?? I love it. No need for dinner here - the portions will keep you fed until breakfast the next day! They don’t forfeit quality for quantity either, the food is just as delicious as all the restaurants I visited in Hanoi. The staff here seem particularly hospitable too - I was given a small platter for biscuits and a a banana while I waited for my meal. 5 stars all round.

We had an amazing meal. 10 people just turned up and was no problem for them to cater for us. Great dishes. Very tasty. Very friendly family. Fantastic value for money. Portions are very generous. Would definitely recommend to give it a go.

Food was amazing ! We ordered 2 dishes now the taste was so good ! We felt very sorry that we couldn’t finish (the dishes come in very big portions!) and the owner offered to pack it up so we could take it out ㅠㅠ The fried beef with pineapple and the fried beef noodles : would recommend 100%
Pauline M — Google review
The owner was lovely and welcoming. The food was good, a healthy portion of Sweet and sour chicken and a lot of rice for a side of only 10.000VND. The chicken was tender. The spring rolls were good and freshly made but not particularly tasty. If you're a big eater or a group, you have the option to order a dish for 1/2/3/4 people. Beer was particularly cheap for restaurant prices.
Haroun K — Google review
The photos don’t do it justice but the portion was HUGE!! I had to ask for half of it to be put in a box for the next day. We received bananas and ‘fish treats’ while we were waiting. Nice flavours, decent price and lovely staff. There’s also 2 little dogs running around sometimes too.
Jordan C — Google review
Lovely little family restaurant. Not exactly fancy, but served up good solid food at very reasonable prices. The menu has 4 levels for most dishes - depending on whether you're ordering for 1, 2, 3, or 4 people. The pictured dishes are all from the "1" column (plus plain steamed rice, not pictured), and gave us comfortably two meals' worth. The pork with ginger was especially good - piles of hot fragrant ginger and lean tender pork. Staff were friendly, if a little confused - we arrived soaked through and set up for several hours, having beers and spring rolls while doing some holiday planning, then only ordering our mains a couple of hours later. I don't think they minded. Hopefully. Total bill for all the mentioned food, plus 5 beers and 2 large bottle of water, was 330,000₫. A Grab taxi back to train station was 26,000₫.

If you're seeking an authentic Vietnamese dining experience in Ninh Binh, look no further than the renowned Family Restaurant. This establishment is beloved for its extensive menu featuring traditional Vietnamese dishes made with local ingredients. The warm and inviting atmosphere makes it an ideal choice for families and friends looking to savor delicious cuisine. Whether you're a meat lover or prefer vegetarian options, this family-run restaurant has something to satisfy every palate.
There were simply no misses with what we ordered. The roast duck was amazing, and is a must-try. The omelette was also super fluffy while the rice paper rolls were packed with shrimp, rice noodles and full of flavour.
Melissa T — Google review
I had an amazing experience at Family Restaurant. Their duck is by far the juiciest and most affordable I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. As a true duck lover, I’ve been searching across countries for the best duck dish, and my search is finally over. The flavor, tenderness, and value here are unmatched. If you’re a fan of duck or just good food in general, this place is a must-visit.
ענבר ט — Google review
November 2025: I am a Level 7 contributor (> 400 reviews) on Google and regularly review eateries and experiences to give an unbiased opinion. I was intrigued by the ducks that they roasted at the front of the restaurant and decided to check it out. The staff told me that the portion was not excessive for 1 person. I think the ducks were roasted at a final stage with herbs. It definitely does not taste like Cantonese roast duck. The meat was tender. However, there were many bony pieces. The Hanoi beer here is cheap, 25k VND per bottle. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Nice local food, cooked fast and its busy so everything is fresh. Good prices, meal for four with drinks was $33 nzd. Only downside was that both times we ate the forgot meals and drinks, wasn't a translation issue, also it got quite smokey and was hard to get the staffs attention and they dont check back. Would eat there again though.

Highly recommended! The food was delicious (we had the grilled goat, burnt rice, and beef pho), and the staff were extremely nice, we had a great time with them. Ask for recommendations on how to best enjoy each dish, they’ll be happy to help!

Big menu and lots of vegetarian options. Easily able to cater to vegans too. Staff very attentive and overall great service. Atmosphere nice and enough fans to keep you cool. Cheap and cold beers

We got too try some duck after eating here lovely service. And also great for letting us try some off the menu food. The drinks did take a little bit longer than expected but the friendliness easily made up in time by the staff. If you dare too test yourself in trying something new then head over when in ninh binh

Excellent! I ordered the stewed pork in caramel sauce and it was amazing. Service was quick and friendly — they even explained how to eat it properly. There’s a wide variety of options for all tastes, with prices ranging from 40,000 to 200,000. Highly recommended!

Restaurant
Nhà hàng Dê Chính Thư 2 is a well-established, family-owned restaurant known for its delectable goat dishes prepared according to Ninh Binh standards. The restaurant offers a spacious and authentic ambiance, adding to the dining experience. However, due to its popularity, there might be a wait for service. Guests have praised the delicious goat meat and generous portions.
This establishment is renowned as the go-to spot for delectable goat dishes in Ninh Binh. The goat meat served here is incredibly tender and flavorful, making every bite a delight. Accompanied by fermented soy sauce, chilies, fresh veggies, and a banana leaf salad, the meal is a true culinary experience. What adds to the charm is the generous pitcher of iced tea they provide, absolutely free of charge! The 'Com Chay' is another must-try; it's a hit among the kids and has a delightful rice crispy texture. I can't recommend this place enough for its free Cha da and exceptional goat!

Fantastic restaurant! I got a recommendation from my hostel to eat here as it is a special goat restaurant. I read a review claiming that the English menu prices were higher... This is not true. I grabbed both menus, used Google translate and it's the same. I paid 200K for the stir fried goat and 50K for fried rice. 250K total. The staff doesn't speak English, but they are very attentive and ready to use Google translate if needed. Portions were quite generous and the food was very tasty. Highly recommended!

This restaurant looks very authentic and spacious. Food is delicious, goat is super tasty. Portions are huge! I ordered steak and was given tea, salad, 2 sauces. Personnel are attentive and very friendly. Though I am a foreigner, they asked me several times if I am satisfied with the dish (I was feeling unwell and couldn’t eat much though everything was tasty). When I told it and apologised, they brought me special congee soup, which local people eat when feeling unwell, and didn’t charge me for that. Everyone was very friendly. Have been there 2 times and will come again.

Food were good but they didnt realize the ingredient that we asked for. They forgot to take the easiest(fried rice)food. The view was bad and it’s full of bad smell. But the outside door was nice and catch your look.

This is such a great find. I just asked the taxi driver for some food recommendations, and this is the first place one the list. The food is good, great price. Highly recommend Dê Tái Chanh ( Goat with ginger and lime sauce) and you make you own roll with lots of herbs. Also I personally love Dê Xào Mẻ ( Goat stir-fried with fermented rice vinaigrette sauce) highly highly recommended. Much better compared to those restaurants closer to the Tam Coc port

We were so disappointed at the dish "De op chao" that was recommended by the staff as best seller. The De meat was extremely chewy like rubber. We followed Google Maps to find this restaurant, expecting to have the best dish in town. Dissatisfied! We would not recommend to travellers.

The restaurant Thao Béo Restaurant Bar is a great find – the food is delicious, better than other recommended places tried next to it, and the owner is very friendly and welcoming. She's sorry she had to leave early but explained that she had to get some fresh fish first. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, perfect for a casual evening out with friends.
The food was the best food we had in Vietnam so far! We had a variety of dishes that each were amazing. The staff is also super friendly, we even got some complimentary lychees for dessert. Also very nice and calm atmosphere. We would definitely recommend eating here!

Great food, great service! We tried many restaurants in the city but we were not satisfied. After a bit of research we found this gem which is a bit further out. We had the sesame pork and the stir fried duck and it was delicious!! The lady servicing us was great and we could smell the chef firing up the stove and freshly preparing the food for us. Getting away from the tourist traps and going here was the best decision. Don’t be discouraged that it is a bit further away from the main street and therefore a bit empty. I promise you’ll have a great meal!!

This restaurant is a hidden gem near the Trang An sampan cruises. Vegetable & mushroom soup with special local sun-baked rice crackers was so good. Sliced goat meat served with rice papers to roll up with fig leaves, basil, mint, cilantro, and assorted matchstick veggies and sliced figs. Nothing fancy. A clean, homey place. Generous portions!

Cannot add a review for food as we didn’t get that far, the member of staff who dealt with us was so obnoxious we didn’t want to stay. This was around 6pm on Friday 16 March, Incase the boss wants a word with her. Such a shame as this restaurant had been recommended to us
Sailslikeagirl — Google review
I’m not a picky eater, but I definitely didn’t think it was worth it to eat the food. We ordered the goat stew, and it was chewy and pretty tasteless. We also ordered the potato and egg soup, but that’s not what we got. The soup we ended up eating was ok once you put some rice and lime in it. The staff was friendly, which is a plus
Ellie P — Google review
We heard this was the place for goat. Stewed goat was very chewy and did not have flavor, cost 170,000. Soup was not very good either, cost 40,000. The woman who took care of us was very kind, but the food was not enjoyable. I hope the food improves in the future.

I really wouldn't listen to trip advisor. It's one of the most expensive restaurants in the city. The food was mediocre, and doesn't match the description or even the picture. The waiting staff is non-existent and don't remember a drink order. Honestly, go to the nice people doing street food. This isn't worth it.
Morgan — Google review
Curious place if you're a casual diner. Food can only really be ordered by weight, which makes things quite challenging. Quality isn't bad, we enjoyed the steamed soy fish we received but whole ordering experience is a little strange if you eat in the downstairs area. It's kind of more for big groups and families rather than a couple's dinner. The food quality though was good so if you are a big group or more fluent in Vietnamese than us then please do give it a try!

Just a smaller airport. Luggage was transported quickly and nothing to fault.
Animus L — Google review
It's a small airport located near the city center. It's quite new and clean. Because it was small, I could do everything quickly. I showed my phone and passport to the girl at the check-in counter, she checked then threw my phone on the counter instead of giving it back to me and I was angry. I stood right there and I didn't go anywhere far away. The area near the gates was crowded. The food was expensive and It was not good. I couldn't use my card to get inside the business lounge because it was not internationally qualified. I couldn't find any friendly staff there. The screen on the baggage claim area was too small and they put it at the place where it was hard to see. I walked around 3 times to find the screen to know where to claim my baggage until I saw it was small on the second column of the carousel area. The taxi drivers always scared me. They spoke too loud and it was like they were ready to fight all the time. The taxis were old and many times I had to sit with other strange passengers with different stops. Of course, each of us had to pay full price for the trip although the car was shared.

Small airport Friendly staff What I didn’t like about it : there is no water house spray in the restroom The management should consider this point!! I give 3 stars
Mustafa A — Google review
Cát Bi International Airport may not be as large or busy as Nội Bài or Tân Sơn Nhất, but it serves its purpose well as the main gateway to Hải Phòng and the surrounding northern coastal region. Recently upgraded, the airport is modern, clean, and easy to navigate—making it a pleasant alternative to the more crowded hubs. The terminal is compact, so you won’t find endless shopping or dining options, but the essentials are there: a few cafés, souvenir shops, and convenient services like ATMs, SIM card counters, and car rental desks. For domestic flights, the check-in and security process is generally fast and straightforward, which makes traveling through Cát Bi less stressful than bigger airports. What makes this airport especially practical is its location—just about 5 km from Hải Phòng city center. A short taxi or ride-hailing trip gets you downtown in minutes, making it ideal for both business travelers and tourists heading to destinations like Hạ Long Bay or Cát Bà Island. On the downside, because of its smaller scale, delays can sometimes feel more noticeable, and facilities are limited for long layovers. Still, Cát Bi Airport stands out for its efficiency, convenience, and simplicity—offering travelers a smooth entry point to Vietnam’s vibrant northeast.
Michael — Google review
This is a very small airport, not crowded like others. Immigration has only two lines, but there aren’t many tourists. I saw only one baggage claim area. When you exit the gate, many drivers will approach you asking where you are going. However, I highly recommend booking a car through the GRAB application. It’s cheaper, safer, and hassle-free—just make sure to pin the correct location.
KHUNTHONG S — Google review
How my NEW luggage got handled at cat bi airport today. I wonder (not really) why there is a footprint of a worker on there when luggages are carried by hands. For me it looks like someone tried to break in my luggage.
Trang N — Google review
Best airport in Vietnam. It’s always clean. I have been flying in and out from Cat Bi for at least 50 times in the past years. And it never takes more than 30 minutes to check in and get through customs.
Moon P — Google review
Very small airport, most flights to HCM, one to Danang and one to Seoul. Beats the crowd of Hanoi, but limited flights, can save flying out of this airport vs Hanoi as most super saver seats still available. Most efficient service getting luggage when disembarking a flight given how small the airport is.

Tho Xuan airport

Domestic airport
Tho Xuan airport, located in Thanh Hoa, is a small domestic airport with basic facilities. Despite its limited services, it offers essential amenities such as restrooms, cafes, and food shops. The waiting area provides a clear view of the runway and parking area for airplanes. Travelers have reported smooth operations and efficient service at this modest yet functional airport.
Small but very efficient, everything runs smoothly
Amir S — Google review
A small airport, not many flights so very efficient. The plane to the gate is literally 2 minute walk but still need to take the shuttle bus which wastes a lot of time. Hope they can let people walk on the ground like years ago.
Terry T — Google review
The standard domestic airport with a small area and poor service. Anyway you can find the toilet, several cafes, small food shops and a waiting zone. One big value of the airport is you can see the lines and parking of airplanes. If the plane has not arrived, you know about it and if it lands, you can see it with your eyes.
Anton D — Google review
Small airport and terminaltill using busses to transfer from the plane to the the terminal, like in HCMC. Arrived at night so didn't see much. Grub, Be and taxi are available.
Eh M — Google review
Not so crowded and the checking in process quite fast. But very less flights for a day.
Tony N — Google review
We were there 3 hours early, and were told to come back in 2 hours for checkin. That is okay. But we asked to weigh our bags first so we didn't have to worry about that later. Our bags were a bit over, so we were concerned. Both ladies at the desk said it was fine, and we double checked - they confirmed. Then when we came back 2 hours later we were forced to pay extra 330,000 dong for the extra weight. Bad service for giving wrong information.
Richard — Google review
Staff that work at the check in counter would rip off foreigners with a bit of extra baggage. We have been flying all over vietnam and never had issues with our baggage. But in this airport, the lady says that our baggage is over 14 KG, so we have to pay extra 324,000 VND to buy extra 15 KG baggage allowance and get then checked in. We couldn’t bring them to the plane either. I saw them letting locals take out stuff into their hand bag/plastic bag though. I guess they r only charging us coz we r foreigners.

So bad. Our check-in procedures are cumbersome and inflexible while such PIC staff are so uncooperative. The air conditioner does not work or work very weakly
