Shimabara Castle

Mentioned on
15 lists
Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Shimabara Castle, originally constructed in the 1600s and later rebuilt, is a historical site with a museum and a garden showcasing sculptures. The castle has a dark history, as it was built through brutal oppression of locals by Shigemasa Matsukura. This led to the Shimabara Rebellion, during which the castle was besieged. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as samurai residences and the town known for its swimming carp.
Beautiful small castle. Air-conditioning isn't great but it's something and will keep you cool. Old building they have kept as intact as possible so don't expect a lift! Lots of artefacts from different ages of samurai- gorgeous surroundings and amazing views when you get to the top. The workers wear traditional gear- there's a gift shop too
Mc0mich — Google review
A well preserved historical site just a 10 minute walk from Shimabara Station. The entrance fee is ¥700 for adults as of March 2025, and you can explore the castle in about an hour. Originally built in the early 17th century, this castle played a key role during the Shimabara Rebellion. It was later dismantled during the Meiji era but reconstructed in the 1960s. The main keep offers panoramic views of the city, Mount Unzen, and the Ariake Sea. Inside, the museum showcases samurai armor, weapons, and historical artifacts, but most descriptions are in Japanese only. The castle grounds also feature statues and exhibits related to Christian history in Japan. Overall, it's a nice place for history enthusiasts and those looking to enjoy scenic views of the region.
Ryan G — Google review
The newly redone Shimabara castle is celebrating their 400th anniversary this year, and it was pretty nice. They had two guides dressed in period outfits showing people around, and a selection of weapons, outfits, crafts, and pottery from the Japanese fuedal ages up until the restoration. Views are good from the top. Can see the whole thing in an hour or less on foot from Shimabara station if you’re in a hurry.
John B — Google review
We made a short detour to visit Shimabara Castle, and I’m so glad we did. It’s not as famous as some of Japan’s bigger castles, but it has its own quiet charm and unique history. The white five-tiered keep rises gracefully over the surrounding town, and the moat and stone walls give it a classic, picture-perfect look. Even from the outside, it was already beautiful. Inside the castle, the atmosphere was calm and unhurried—no big crowds, which made it easy to take our time. The exhibits inside were more than just your typical historical displays. They focused a lot on the Christian history of the region, the Shimabara Rebellion, and local samurai culture, which gave it a different flavor compared to other castles I’ve visited. I learned a lot, especially about the hidden Christian communities during the Edo period. Climbing up the keep, each floor had something different to offer—from armor displays to old photographs—and at the top, we were rewarded with sweeping views of Shimabara city and even glimpses of Mount Unzen in the distance. It was peaceful and surprisingly scenic. The castle grounds were also worth exploring. There were a few small museums nearby and a tranquil garden area. Everything was well maintained, and the staff were warm and welcoming. It felt like one of those under-the-radar spots that deserves more attention. Shimabara Castle might not have the grandeur of Osaka or Himeji, but its history runs deep and its quiet elegance leaves a strong impression. If you’re in Nagasaki Prefecture or near Unzen, it’s absolutely worth the stop.

If you like history like I do 100% recommend checking out the castle. They have old samurai armor, weapons, art and just cool relics from the past. Plus you get to learn about the ways that went on in the surrounding area.
Patirck T — Google review
Newly built reproduction of a feudal castle. Great informational displays with some English. Views of the city, port, and nearby mountains are of a plus.

Visited on 23 Jan, 2025. The staff in blue traditional costume provided perfect explanation of the Shimabara Challenge. Thanks to her, I have completed it and earned the badge. The castle offers a fantastic 360° view of the lovely place.
Eric T — Google review
This is the 18th castle I have visited in Japan; historically, I could relate more with this castle mainly because of the fact that I am a Christian. The history of this castle dates back to the rebellion of the Christian community in this part of Japan against the Tokugawa Shogunate that had pursued a policy of discrimination against those of the Christian faith, it was the largest scale rebellion that the Tokugawa government had faced in there 200 year rule of Japan. This castle has extensive history on the events of that rebellion, the deployment of forces to intercept and defend against the government forces, it also has a collection of samurai and western-inspired weapons and armory that were used by soldiers and rebels of the time. The failure of that rebellion led to the enforcement of the proscription of Christians and forceful conversion, and subsequent torture of those that refused to abandon the Christian faith. The official document which outlawed Christianity in Japan is also showcased within this castle and has been perfectly preserved. What struck me the most were the many depictions of the torture and killing of Christians in this region which has an active volcano, and the great lengths that Japanese Christians went through to practice Christianity, even going as far as to mask Christian images and statues to look like those of the Buddhist faith. Due to the lack of foreign missionaries for many years, Christianity in Japan took on a new face and new images of Mary the mother of Christ and even Jesus himself were used in place of those well recognizable by the Roman Catholic Church. Generally, it was a highly educative trip and entry into this castle cost 400 yen. I highly recommend a visit by castle enthusiasts, Japanese history enthusiasts, and even Christians.

Mount Unzen

Mentioned on

Mountain peak
Mount Unzen, located in the Unzen Amakusa National Park on the Shimbara Peninsula, is a captivating destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. This active volcano offers dramatic scenery with its mysterious landscape and sulphurous smoke emanating from its caldera. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels wind around the volcanic area, providing adventurers with an enthralling experience.
Wonderful hike! The clouds were covering the view but then lifted and the views were amazing. You get really close to the volcano!
Jason W — Google review
As a volcano enthusiast, I really enjoyed my time in Unzen. Mt. Unzen is infamous for the 1991 eruption that got a lot of international media attention. There are several ways to enjoy the mountain currently. Unzen is a collective name for several different peaks located next to each other. On day 1, I climbed Fugen-dake peak (which used to be the highest point before 1991 eruption). To climb it, I went to "Unzen mountain information center" (right next to "Unzen Jigoku" Hells) and took a taxi to Nita toge pass (3000¥). It was a non-technical hike taking little more than an hour to reach the peak directly. On the way up I heard some growling animal sounds, so I wore my bear bells (although I don't think there are bears in the area). From the peak I could see 'Heisei Shinzan' the new highest point of the mountain, which is a lava dome formed during the 1991 eruption. We can see it very up close and also see the smoke from the lava dome continuously coming out from the vents. On day 2, I visited the city of Shimabara, on the other side of Unzen and checked out the Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall (an amazing museum to learn about the 1991 eruption) and Onokoba Mudslide Prevention Museum & Observatory from where we can see the other side of Mt. Unzen which is picturesque.

Mt. Unzen killed 43 people in a 100mph pyroclastic flow during an eruption on 03 June 1991. Katia and Maurice Kraft perished on that fateful day, along with colleague , Volcanologist Harry Glicken. See Werner Herzog's documentary "Into the Inferno".

I wouldn’t recommend going if you are a Christian.

Mt. Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall (Gamadasu Dome)

Mentioned on
3 lists
Science museum
Nature & Parks
The Mt. Unzen Disaster Museum, located in southeastern Shimabara, is a must-visit for those interested in learning about the volcanic nature of Mt. Unzen and the devastating eruption that occurred between 1990-95. The museum provides a unique experience by immersing visitors in the disaster's history, with exhibits showcasing the impact of pyroclastic flows and efforts to mitigate future eruptions. While most information is presented in Japanese, audio guides are available for English speakers.
Didn't even know this existed. Happened here by accident on our through Shimabara to Nagasaki by the ferry. Saw the ad for the museum and stopped by. Very interesting and informative. They have free English audio guide.
R D — Google review
Main message: the museum is built around the concept of reviving the disaster for the visitors and it does so VERY good with the volcano directly in sight and the museum built in the path of destruction. Texts are all in Japanese, but the audio guides are good and allow to dive into the exhibition. Details: We came in a little less than 2h before closing time on that day and basically had the whole museum to ourselves. The whole staff greeted us and we felt like on an official state visit. ☺️ The ticket machines are in Japanese only but the staff will help you if needed. At the entrance another staff member held a sign with English information on playing times for a cinema and a little theater (later more on that). You get an audio guide in several languages. German an English are covered. I think Spanish and French as well. The guide is very helpful because texts at the exhibits are nearly all in Japanese. Just choose the number visible at your spot and press play. There is little cinema playing a movie that replays the events of the disaster. It is in Japanese, but the audio guide plays translations and explanations in parallel. Worked for me. Even better is the little theater! It replays the events of the earlier outbreak in 1792 with moving wooden scenery, sound, light and video clips. Made for kids I found myself leaning in totally consumed by the story. Absolutely lovely! The do it yourself stations for kids are not fully usable if you don't speak the language. But this is just a minor glitch. A highlight is the glass floor with a post disaster scenery. Every few minutes it simulates the outbreak and gives you an idea how fast a pyroclastic wave at 100kph really is. Frightening. 😬 There is also a volcanic stone walking path and a viewing platform. You could easily spend 4h there, I think. Cafe and vending machines are (of course) available and very affordable. Very close to the museum is also a set of houses destroyed in the disaster and persevered in their state which gives you an even better understanding of the horrible force that came done back then. No fees charged there. If some extra texts in English are added, the place is worth more than 5 stars. I can only say: VISIT!
Alexander G — Google review
This is a must-see if you are ever in the area. The story of the Mt Uzen disaster can really be felt here. It's completely amazing to experience. If you are an English speaker grab the headphones so you can listen to the story as you walk through each of the visual displays, it makes for a great experience.
Wilbur S — Google review
This museum will give you a history behind the surrounding area with videos. The ebst thing for English speaking tourist, they have translation headsets to wear. If you live science and history this place is it. ALSO great for kids.
Patirck T — Google review
Really interesting interactive displays on the volcanic area. You get an English interpretive device so you can listen to each display. Clearly marked. Very friendly staff

English audio guides available (other languages like Chinese and Korean also available) and a lot of information about the volcano eruption in Unzen. Pretty cool to see the pictures, videos, and objects on display. A ton of interactive displays.

Unzen Nita Pass

Scenic spot
Sights & Landmarks
Unzen Nita Pass is a stunning destination just a short 20-minute drive from Unzen, offering breathtaking natural beauty throughout the year. Each season brings its own charm, from vibrant azalea blooms in spring to fiery autumn leaves and serene winter fog. Visitors can take a scenic ropeway ride to the summit of Myoken Mountain for panoramic views that are simply unforgettable. While there are no dining facilities at the top, it's advisable to pack snacks or enjoy a meal before or after your visit.
Great drive to the top of the mountain. Pay minimum 100 Yen and have fun driving the twisty one way road up to the view point. Stop by the view point and enjoy the great view of the area. Nita Pass is also the trailhead to hike up Mount Fugendake. Great views on top of Mt. Fugendake. Totally worth it.
Jan L — Google review
Drove up to the very top. The weather was great with slightly over casting with light cloud. The view still was nice and breezy wind. No resting area as to dine to eat so you will need to bring with you or before or after you visit the pass. Most people hikes however if you dont wish to you may purchase the rope way ticket either one way or round trip. This pre summer season you get to view the "tsutsuji" azalea flowers surrounding the mountain.
Shoko C — Google review
Came at 5pm late march. There was nobody, very strong winds and very cold. Do come during other seasons would be very very beautiful.

just exploring Nagasaki. visit here to ride the rope way to the top of the mountain. The view from the top is amazing 😉 before you can get here you will drive zigzag roads 😅 🚗🤗

Cloudy, cold day. But it was a nice hike and the clouds broke for a short view.

Rainy but sooooo beautiful
Harry B — Google review
The Unzen ropeway is a great place to visit during all seasons. There is only one mountain road up to the top of the mountain. On the weekend it gets pretty busy so you might be stuck in your car for an hour or so waiting for parking. Make sure you use the restroom before heading up the mountain, because there is no where to turn around on your way up or down.

Entry cost 400 yen and was just a fair distance away from the train station. It was a pretty good place for me to just sit back and relax after visiting other touristic spots in the area. I was offered a cup of green tea and had small talk with one of the staff members there who was really helpful in recommending other places to visit, she even handed me a brochure to emphasize her point on the best touristic spots worth visiting. I liked my brief experience there.

My family and I experience trasnquil and beautiful park with tons of natrual spring water rising from the ground. The water is so crystal clear that we could see the carps. It cost 400 Yen to sit in this 110 years-old traditional Japanese villa. We sip a cup of green tea in a comfortable and quiet atmosphere. We stroll around the garden and observe the movement of carps in the clear water that reflects the view of trees and picturesque plants. Friendly staffs explains history, recommend attractions and even offcer beverage discount.

Tonnes of natural spring water rises up out of the ground here every day and the water is so clear, that the carp swimming around at Shimeiso sometimes appear as if they're floating or even hovering above the water. Enjoy a cup of green tea and relax in this traditional Japanese villa.

Koi no oyogu machi street

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Koi no oyogu machi street is a delightful destination that showcases the beauty of Koi fish swimming gracefully in the town's canals. Even on rainy days, visitors can appreciate these vibrant creatures, which symbolize the area's clean water. This charming spot invites everyone to stroll along its short path without any entrance fees, making it accessible for all. The visitor information center features a pond with larger Koi and offers fish food for those eager to feed them.
We loved this street! It's not long but so worth it to go and see the fish swimming through the canals. The visitor information center has a pond where they keep the bigger koi fish and you can buy fish food to feed them there. They also have a footbath with natural spring water which is really nice and refreshing. Along the street are a couple stamps you can collect for the stamp rally they have. You'll receive a post card at the visitor center or if you go to the castle beforehand your entry ticket is a card to collect the stamps. Everyone we encountered were super friendly and spoke English besides speaking japanese

Enjoy the street of koi fish swimming freely in the drains. Shimabara's spring water is so clean that the carp could live in the city's pipes. It's called Koi fish town.
Piyawat B — Google review
I suspect the carps are not free to swim everywhere. Was still interesting to see carps leisurely cruising along the drain systems. Who is feeding them?
Andy L — Google review
Crystal clear water 👍👍👍👍 Amazing place Ferry from Kumamoto to Nagasaki Only 10-15 mins drive from Shimabara port
Jess — Google review
The Carps and Kois are a welcomed sights. Unless you have some bread crumbs to feed, they usually hide underneath the pavement covers. They seem big and well fed than wild fishes in the drains. A detour sights if you on the way to the ferry crossing but not worth a dedicated trip though.
Wailim H — Google review
Make sure you stop at the residence and pay to get in and rest inside while they serve you a small cup of tea!

I am very surprised that a long the way we can see Koi fish in the small river in the town. Even actually I visited there when it was raining, but still we can enjoy Koi. Many people visited also just to enjoy and taking pictures of Koi fish in the town. It’s not only beautiful but also sign of clean water of the town. It’s worth to visit anyway!! Since it’s open public places, you don’t need entrance ticket in advance

The Heisei-Shinzan Nature Center, located near Mt. Unzen Fugen, is considered the nearest point to the mountain. It provides shelter on the surrounding pathways and ensures a quick evacuation time of about 1 minute. Koi no oyogu machi street

Sights & Landmarks
Koi no Oyogu Machi Street is a charming area where over 1,000 koi fish gracefully swim through the streets and between traditional minka houses. While there isn't a rich historical background to these fish, they provide a serene and enjoyable sight for visitors. It's a delightful experience to watch them leisurely swim and even feed them, adding an extra touch of enjoyment to this picturesque setting.

I suspect the carps are not free to swim everywhere. Was still interesting to see carps leisurely cruising along the drain systems. Who is feeding them?

Crystal clear water 👍👍👍👍 Amazing place Ferry from Kumamoto to Nagasaki Only 10-15 mins drive from Shimabara port

The Carps and Kois are a welcomed sights. Unless you have some bread crumbs to feed, they usually hide underneath the pavement covers. They seem big and well fed than wild fishes in the drains. A detour sights if you on the way to the ferry crossing but not worth a dedicated trip though.

Himematsu-ya

$$$$affordable
Japanese regional restaurant
Himematsu-ya is a popular spot among both locals and Japanese tourists, evident from the crowded atmosphere. Visitors may have to wait for a seat, especially during peak times. Upon entering, guests can pick up a queue number token at the cashier table and wait for their turn. The first floor can comfortably accommodate around 5 adults per table.
Good experience except for the 20 minute wait. The waitresses were all female - very friendly. Their specialty was a light stew with fish, vegetables, and rice cakes. Very impressive! Recommended to try if you are in this small town. They had a parking lot but it was full when we arrived. :(
Yadong L — Google review
Lovely restaurant that specialised in Guzioni. This is my first time trying this dish and it seems to be exclusive to only to Shimabarra. I have tasted quite a number of Japanese cuisines but this is truly an experience that is unique and tasty! It’s just a waste we were rushing for the ferry hence I couldn’t spend more time here. The “rice cake” has a resemblance to that of mochi, which could also be somewhat similar to ttoekbokki to the Koreans. However this bowl of wonderful dish has got a herbal taste due to the broth. The vegetables and meat pairs very well with this main dish.
Quak S — Google review
This restaurant is right next to the castle. The environment feels very traditional with the staff being very friendly. There's a waitress that swings by each table with fresh hot tea. My wife ordered a mochi hot pot which was really good and tasted very earthy. I ordered the pork katsu and I must say I was not too happy with it as it was extremely basic. I did not feel or taste anything special with this dish. That is the only reason why this restaurant received a 4 out of five stars. Looking forward to trying other dishes on my next visit.
Japan E — Google review
A well-known store, but the experience is very poor. The food quality is low, and the taste of raw fish slices likes plastic. The so-called specialty dish is actually vegetable with rice cake, which has a ordinary taste and is not worth eating specifically. What's the scariest thing, a boiled mosquito is in the dish!! The waiter immediately bowed and apologized, with a very good attitude. When checking out, they gave a 20% discount
David — Google review
Expecting bathroom very small, nice parking lot. Visit the Shimabara castle across the street.
Yun — Google review
One of the easiest places to get to after sightseeing at the castle. They brought us an English menu, which helped with a few things we couldn't read. Getting the lowdown on guzoni, a local hot pot dish with mochi, was definitely helpful. I was steered in that direction because I like mochi but don't find many chances to eat it. It came out pretty fast, too. The guzoni broth was gentle and warming, with a variety of ingredients like fish cake and mushrooms hiding under the mochi. Really satisfying on a cold day. The inari sushi that came with my set was some of the best I've ever had, hitting the right balance of sweet and savory with just enough ginger for a kick without overwhelming the flavor of the tofu.
Dan P — Google review
This restaurant serves the best (gu)zoni I’ve ever eaten. The dashi (broth) is deep and flavorful. The gu part is plentiful, especially when you step up and order their specialty. It’s few steps away from Shimabara Castle which has has a great selection of hidden Christian figures and a a decent history of the last days of the Edo period in Japanese history. This restaurant is worth the effort to get here.

Tottotto Shokudo Dining in Shimabara offers a heartfelt service and delicious fresh seafood. The restaurant provides a clean and airy atmosphere with sea views during non-peak hours. It also sells rare tea leaves for souvenirs. The historic setting, once a rice garage, adds to the dining experience. Guests can choose their own fresh catch of the day or select from an excellent menu featuring incredibly fresh seafood.
For my first experience in Shimabara, it's so heartful service by floor and kitchen. The fresh fish and seashell were so great. The perfect clean window was carring sea smells and fresh air during non crowded time. And they sales rare tea leaf for your souvenir. I had truly nice lunch time with the shimabara's deep history. I ordered a photogenic seafood bowl, and although the menu looked like it was topped with an abundance of sashimi, it was surprisingly small. The fish probably wasn't very fresh, as the bonito was pitch black and had a fishy smell. There were a lot of shiny fish, all of which had a fishy smell. Not something you'd get at this price. The pufferfish tempura bowl my companion ordered was tastier, but maybe that's why it tasted so good. The soft roe was also about the size of a marble. There's a boat inside the restaurant, and it's right next to the ocean, so it's perfect for Instagram. Rokubei

Japanese regional restaurant
During my recent adventure in Shimabara, I was eager to indulge in the local delicacy known as "Rokubei." This unique dish features noodles crafted from sweet potato flour, resulting in a delightful black hue. The history behind Rokubei is fascinating; it was originally created as sustenance during times of famine. When I ordered the Maruten Rokubee, I was pleasantly surprised by its rich flavor profile.
Good food at very reasonable price. The beef tendon and the tamago yaki is very delicious 😁

(Translated by Google) Business trip to Shimabara, day 1. I had the local dish Rokubei. It was around noon, so when I entered the store, it was crowded. I ordered Tsukimi Rokubei. Rokubei seems to be a dish of noodles made by kneading sweet potato flour and yam simmered in a soy sauce-based broth. It is said to have been invented by Mr. Rokubei, a village headman in Shimabara, about 220 years ago when there was a great famine caused by the eruption of Mt. Fugendake and the resulting tsunami. Local people told us that the people of the time, whose staple food was sweet potatoes that grew even in poor soil, devised a udon-like dish made from preserved sweet potato flour and yams, which saved the lives of many people. When you eat it, you'll notice that the thick, short, dark noodles contain egg, kamaboko, paste, and green onions, and have a unique chewy texture with a hint of sweet potato sweetness. It had a simple taste. It's nice to enjoy local cuisine while feeling the history. Thank you for the meal.

Chive manju is really delicious. I'd like to go there at night. The other izakaya menu items also looked delicious. Rokubei is a heartwarming dish. I'll leave my thoughts to other reviews. Local cuisine simply conveys the flavor of the ingredients. At worst, it gets boring. Japan has become overwhelmingly richer than in the past. Cons: it may be busy during peak hours but the service is still fast enough that you have enough time in before courses Overall greatly recommend this to anyone and once again thank you for the staff and the head chef for the amazing meal and experience we had

Himematsuya Shinmachi

Mentioned on
1 list
$$$$affordable
Japanese regional restaurant
Himematsuya Shinmachi, a charming regional restaurant in Japan, evokes a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era. Its location, just in front of a castle, may seem daunting to some, but visitors can stop by without any worry. The store on the second floor is frequented by locals and offers various dishes besides their famous children's gu-zoni. Customers can indulge in flavorsome simmered dishes without hesitation.
We chanced upon this restaurant for lunch. The owner is very kind and arranged for us to sit on proper chair instead of tatami [ we are kinda fat ]. The food is very good and noticed that the customers are regulars and japs. Food is damn good.English menu is available.

Chanced upon this due to Google review. Restaurant has been in operations for years! Had the local guzoni, mochi rice balls in light flavourful broth. Has vegetarian tempura option and kids meals!

(Translated by Google) "Himematsuya Shinmachi Branch" - Enjoy the warmth of the local area along with the history of Shimabara. Shimabara, a city of water, forests, and history. ``Himematsuya Shinmachi Branch'', which stands close to Shimabara Castle, which can be said to be a symbol of this, is a famous store that has been loved by locals for many years. What I had here was the ``guzoni set meal'', which is known as a local dish of Shimabara. The moment you open the lid, the aroma of the soup stock wafts up. The zoni with lots of ingredients is generously filled with chewy mochi, making it an irresistible luxury for mochi lovers. The soft stewed vegetables are accented with julienned burdock root, giving it a crispy texture and a rustic aroma that spreads in your mouth. A dish that condenses local ingredients, time and effort, and the gentle climate of Shimabara into a single bowl. This zoni is truly a “feast” that will warm your mind and body. If you visit Shimabara, this is a traditional flavor that you should definitely try as a drink after experiencing the history.

During my visit in May 2025, a central food station (Hakata Food Station) was already in place, and duty-free stores were placed. Because there are plenty, you will never run out of seats, charging stations, or toilets.

Visited in July 2025 (International Terminal only) One of the reasons why this airport is great (for its users) is that it's located right in the downtown, with a subway line connecting both places. One even can walk from the shinkansen station to the international terminal in 30 minutes or slightly more if he/she is especially in a mood of a walk or a bit energetic. The international terminal itself is well designed, easy to use, and stylish for a medium-sized airport. I saw some reviews posted some months ago complaining the lackluster quantity of seating in the airside - can confirm this problem is largely rectified.

Fukuoka Airport is a great airport. Clean, well-maintained, and very organized. Facilities are modern, signage is clear, and the overall layout makes it easy to navigate. Staff are friendly and efficient, making the travel experience smooth from check-in to boarding. A pleasant gateway to Kyushu!

Having passed through the newly renovated Fukuoka Airport in 2024, I was thoroughly impressed. While it retains its compact and manageable size, the updates have given it a wonderfully fresh and refreshing feel, making it a very pleasant place to arrive or depart from. The greatest advantage remains its incredible convenience. Its location is unbeatable, being one of the closest airports to a major city center in the world. The addition of free shuttle rides from the international terminal to the subway station is a fantastic touch, making the commute into the heart of Fukuoka an absolute breeze. It’s a model of efficiency and user-friendly design.

Such a pleasant little airport—compact, efficient, and actually quite pretty compared to many other international airports in Asia. Immigration was smooth and quick, plenty of seating areas, and a few lounges to relax in. Pro tip: take the metro to the last stop, Fukuoka Airport, then follow the exit for the free shuttle to the international terminal. It’s super quick, a short walk, and way easier than expected!

Be aware that the international and domestic terminals are in separate locations — you’ll need to take a shuttle bus for about 5–10 minutes. The airport itself is efficient, clean, and easy to navigate. Plenty of shops inside, with just the right balance — not overwhelming, but enough variety to find what you need. Security lines move quickly, making it one of Japan’s better airports for smooth travel.

Fukuoka Airport leaves a mixed impression. On the positive side, the international terminal is clean, modern, and well maintained, with clear signage, spotless restrooms, free baggage carts, and a wide range of restaurants and souvenir shops. 👌 On the negative side, the connection (about 25 minutes) between the international terminal and the metro station located at the domestic terminal is a hassle. Passengers are forced to take a free shuttle bus, often standing with their luggage, just to cross the airfield. 🥴

Nothing beats a direct flight to FUK. Fukuoka Airport is probably Japan's best airport in terms of proximity to the city centre. It is so convenient! Some tips for the airport: When you enter the arrival lobby and see the information centre and Tully's, the JR pass exchange counter is to your left. Next to it is a seasonal fruit store where you can score some great tasting produce. The SIM card/WiFi counters are on the right towards Lawson. Straight ahead is the bus berth taking you to Hakata, Dazaifu, Yufuin (if you want to hit the ground running!) The newly opened Food Hall you heard about is located in the transit area of departure terminal. The subway is exactly located at the domestic terminal, so if that's your mode of transport, take a shuttle over where you can also purchase their regional IC card (nimoca). You can also purchase Sugoca from the bus ticketing counter facing the road. We took the airport bus to Hakata, a 15-20 minutes ride to Hakata station, a main transport hub of Kyushu. The bus isn't very well-equiped in terms of luggage space, like a pre-converted bus that hasn't decided to leave it's day job.

Kumamoto Airport

Airport
International airport
Regional airport
Aso Kumamoto Airport is a convenient gateway to the Kyushu region, offering easy access to cities like Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima. Upon arrival in the city center, travelers can hop on the Kumamoto City Tram for a picturesque journey through the heart of the action. This affordable mode of transportation provides a charming way to explore the city while avoiding urban traffic.
Newly renovated compact but modern airport with handful of dining options pre-security as well as more extensive options inside. Don't bother using the lounge as there is no view and feels boxed in - the gate area is good enough for chilling.

Early July 2025. Small airport. Airport bus took about 40 minutes to reach here. As the counters have opening hours and the international checkin is a small area, I didn’t know where the checkin counters were. I went up to the second floor where the actual departure custom is located. Then I went back to first floor realizing the closed area is actually the checkin counter. I can extrapolate that if the airport is crowded, it might be pretty long queue for airlines without dedicated counters. The international departure has only one duty free shop and one tea room for tea. If you want to shop or eat at restaurants, after the custom, you move to the left into the domestic departure area. Then you have to go through the scanning again when you come back to international departure area. So those pictures you saw about restaurants and shopping belong to the domestic departure area. If you do not have luggage, you may want to explore. I have hand carried stuffs and didn’t want the hassle of baggage check again. So what you see in my photos here are the whole area of international area. That’s all. Two minutes walk one round. If you want shopping, go and pop into local departure area.

A cheerful and convenient airport full of Kumamon charm and One Piece fun! Kumamoto Airport is a wonderful regional airport that perfectly captures the spirit of Kumamoto. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by Kumamon, the beloved bear mascot of the prefecture, along with One Piece-themed decorations throughout the terminal. The playful designs and cheerful atmosphere make travelers — both kids and adults — feel happy and excited from the moment they step inside. The airport is modern, clean, and easy to navigate. The first floor has several restaurants and souvenir shops, offering local specialties such as Kumamoto ramen and sweets, perfect for a quick meal before your flight or a last-minute gift. Domestic flight facilities are efficient, and check-in and security are generally smooth and well-organized. While it’s a smaller airport, it’s very well-equipped — there are convenient seating areas, charging points, and clear signage in English and Japanese. Transportation to and from the city is also straightforward, with bus connections to central Kumamoto. Overall, Kumamoto Airport combines functionality and local charm beautifully — a happy and welcoming gateway to Kyushu that leaves you smiling whether you’re arriving or departing.

Nestled in Mashiki, about 13 km northeast of Kumamoto city center, Kumamoto Airport serves as the main gateway to Kyushu and combines modern design with regional charm. Its new terminal, opened in March 2023, blends safety and aesthetics into a travel-friendly layout.

Kumamoto Airport may not be as large as major hubs like Narita, but it offers an excellent travel experience. The airport is very clean and well-maintained, creating a pleasant atmosphere for travelers. One thing that stood out to me was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. When we arrived, our luggage was already lined up and neatly arranged a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the efficiency and respect embedded in Japanese culture. Everything felt organized and stress-free, making it a smooth start to our trip. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to Kumamoto!

God awful airport. Sign said international passengers could use the shopping in domeestic departures, i tried to do this only to be told to go away by security. You can't even go through security until 90 mins before intl flights. Shockingly bad representation of kunamoto's government. Airport bus is confusing too

Nagasaki Airport

Airport
Sights & Landmarks
Observation Decks & Towers
Nagasaki Airport is located on an island and offers direct ferry service as well as an observation deck with grassy areas. Travelers can reach the Kitamatsuura Peninsula from Tokyo by taking a flight from Haneda Airport to Nagasaki Airport, followed by an airport bus to Sasebo, and then following directions in the Sasebo section.
A small airport, immigration was pretty fast and smooth. The airport is located pretty far from Nagasaki city, had to take a 30mins bus into the city. Ticket can be bought from the machines at the bus stop, one of the buses supports IC card if u have one. There is a small stairs to the observatory near the exit where the buses are. I didn't manage to go as I was rushing for the buses. There is a huge Nagasaki word made of grass bushes near the runway. Might be able to see it from here.

Nice, clean, manageable. There are small SNA feast stores, convenient and cheap for an airport. Make sure you shop on the right side of the security control!

I took the airport limousine bus (1200¥) within minutes of my plane's arrival from Tokyo. I bought the ticket from the vending machine and joined the Q at platform no. 5. I managed to secure a window seat. Those passengers who boarded later had to sit on seemingly uncomfortable seats in the middle row or in the aisle. I gave the ticket to the driver when I alighted at my stop-Chuobashi. If I'd dutifully topped up my IC card, I'd use the card instead.

Such nice view from both side of airport, please go up observation desk on 3/f for a look. Airport itself equips good transportation and signage. You can find shops and restaurant mainly on 2/f.

The Airport built in 1975 and supported a Concord has become small decades later. If taking an expensive taxi is not an option when traveling downtown ie the Shinchimachi, the only convenient traveling to and from the Airport is to use its 20-minute interval limousine bus costing just Yen 900 each way (around 80 minutes). I bought a ticket upon departure on Nov 23, 2018 and when I returned on November 27, I paid cash when alighting!
